I made reservations through Expedia flor my flight and car. Flight was perfect. Then comes to the rental car. I opted for them to choose the car I would get. I get there the gentleman said, "We need the card to put a hold on it for the rental car. That’s fine. That is what they do. He was looking in the system and said, "I found a better car for you for 110.45. You will need to get hold of Expedia for their refund." I said, "That is great." No problem with the car. I returned it a little earlier than expected. The young man checked the car. Everything was good. He shared I would receive an invoice in my email.

Their website wasn't letting me drop off my rental in another city because of an error. I booked from Las Vegas to drop it off in Las Vegas and then called to ask if they could change it. They didn't change it but said I could drop it off at another location with no fee. After I dropped it off they charged me $200 extra!

I rented a Wrangler online through Priceline. When I got there they allegedly had no Jeep Wrangler per unfriendly irritated front desk clerk. They allegedly had a compass much smaller or a VW Atlas. I went to get atlas at parking spot number 1332 far away and other family was driving away with my rental. All of a sudden they offered the Jeep Wrangler. Which were plenty in their parking lot. Fyi... The Jeep they rented me had Roaches that I had to kill with Zevo from Walmart. I should have charged them to fumigate their Jeep. They pushed to sell me insurance I didn't want. They pushed toll insurance that I didn't want. I declined all. I filled up full tank of gas before returning at Circle K. Guess what. They charged for more gas when already filled it up before returning the rental. I returned it with a full tank.
They won't take my call and won't reimburse my money for gas unless I give receipt. And I threw away receipt. Enjoy the very best of surcharges that Orlando has to give if you use Dollar. Buyer beware. Dollar has lost a customer for life as well as anyone who reads this post. Good luck everyone. And hope you all have a nice vacation despite Dollar's unfair rental charges.

One staff member, a young and professional ** woman, stood out for her exceptional assistance throughout the entire process, which I genuinely appreciated; she was wearing bracelets in the colors of the ** flag. I look forward to the possibility of working with her again for my future car rentals. I had a wonderful experience with Dollar! Got a great rate for a nice car. There was no wait for pick up or drop off. They upgraded us to a SUV without us even asking. Upon looking at our receipt after we dropped off our car we noticed an extra fee which we never asked for. I emailed them and they said it will be waived! Would use them again anytime

This was the worst experience ever. I was aggressively told I would be held accountable for not buying their insurance. The salesperson was very harsh and threatening, trying to instill fear into me to buy the insurance. I was also told I would be reimbursed for prepaid fuel that wasn't needed, when actually they don't give refunds for unused fuel. Didn't find that out until I saw the charge and called them. I prepaid for a full tank and when I brought it back it was 1/3rd full and they still billed for the full tank
Then they only had one person working during a shift change and there were 30-40 people in line. Waited an hour to get a rental and I was then 8-10th person from the front of the line. The line behind me was massive. This was the worse service I've ever had. I really felt scammed and lied to by this company and I will never use them again.

Reserved a car 5/5/25, land at the airport (5/17/25), go to the counter to pick up the car. Was told they have no cars left. Spent the next 4 hours stranded at the airport, calling looking for a car for the week. Called the dollar 800 number and was told it's up to the location to refund me. The location never answers the phone. So I dispute it with the credit card company (bills as Hertz). The credit card company charges it back, telling me I didn't cancel the reservation. What reservation, the one they chose to ignore but take my money for? The one that left me stranded at an airport 1000's of miles from home, at least 70 miles from my hotel, which I had a deposit on too, but they honored my reservation. Moral of the story, Dollar is trash, and after learning it's part of the Hertz company, Hertz lost my business as well.

Do not rent from Dollar Car Rental at the Portland airport. The customer service was awful. They kept forcing us to accept their insurance and we kept declining to the point they said if you don’t accept, you can’t rent the car. They offered us a car and then didn’t tell us it was an upgrade so we got charged for that as well. The person at the counter just circled a bunch of stuff and handed the contract over. Didn’t go over anything.
Tried to resolve the issue and pretty much told us that we don’t force anyone to do anything and would not help resolve the issue. Asked to talk to a manager and they told us try again in the morning and maybe a manager will be there. They have so many hidden fees and are too lazy to go over your contract with you and don’t tell you what you are getting until you get your final receipt. Had a problem with the car and they pretty much told us, "Not our problem, must be yours." So a fun vacation turned into about 3x the price due to the car rental.

They did not accept our car insurance and basically forced us to pay for theirs and it wasn't even full coverage. NEVER renting a car again due to my terrible experience with Dollar Rent A Car.

Just an overall bad experience. Booked my car with AAA Northeast for $261 total, including taxes and fees. When picking up the vehicle I was constantly asked about upgrading to an SUV or larger vehicle. I had to decline several times. I was then asked if I wanted numerous insurance packages and the tolls. I should have known when I saw the estimated total that something was off, but it was a family vacation and we wanted to get to our resort. (Yes, my fault for sure)
Upon returning the vehicle, the total was $451 with extra "recovery fees" and others added to the total. I guess my expectation was that I should have said at pick up, "I booked through AAA and my total cost is $261." Live and learn but wanted to warn anyone else to either RENT ELSEWHERE or ensure you get what you agreed upon if renting from a 3rd party. Had to email customer service twice to finally get a response to which they said, "Sorry, you signed the agreement..." Don't recommend, plenty of choices elsewhere.

To whom it may concern I am sending this email in regards to the service that was provided by your employees at Dollar Car Rental. To me it seems as though they don’t care about the service that they provides. When the vehicle that you’re renting have one price but when it is returned the rental price has been increased by $200 to $300. The price that on the rental receipt was $529.24 but when I returned it I was charged $708.26. I was overcharged for this rental. I returned the vehicle from March 7, 2025 to March 17, 2025 and I returned the vehicle but no one checked the fuel or the vehicle. They just took the keys and walked away. The employees shows lack of concerns about anything. It seems as though this is just a job for them.
Dollar car rental has done this to me twice and when speaking to the manager all I am told is that is what they charge and there is nothing that they can do about it. Not only that there was supposed to be work done on the vehicle on the axle and other issues. The vehicle was unsafe and the paperwork was in the glove compartment stated that. Why would you give me a vehicle that was unsafe. This is the second time that this has occurred. The first time while traveling out of town the engine blew in that vehicle. It seems as though the safety and well being of the customers are not being valued at all. Thank you for your time and attention in this matter.

Terrible Experience with Overcharging and Poor Customer Service at Dollar Car. I recently rented a car from Dollar Car Rental at Los Angeles Airport, and I must say this was one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a car rental company. I feel compelled to share my story so others can avoid going through the same ordeal.
1. Initial Rental Chaos: Upon arriving at the rental location, I was met with a ridiculously long line of over 50-60 people. To make matters worse, there were only two staff members handling the entire crowd. The process was disorganized, chaotic, and far from professional. It was a terrible start to my rental experience.
2. Overcharging Nightmare: After returning the car as scheduled, I was horrified to find that my credit card was being charged daily without explanation. Despite having already returned the car, I was hit with a mysterious $350 charge in addition to the daily charges, which continued to pile up for days. No one from the company could provide me with an explanation for these charges. The financial burden this caused was devastating—I was not only deprived of my $200 deposit, but I was also forced to deal with repeated unexplained withdrawals from my account. The situation became so dire that I had to freeze my credit card and report the charges as fraudulent to stop this nightmare from continuing.
3. Nonexistent Customer Support: Their customer service was an absolute joke. The contact numbers provided were either unhelpful or routed me to an automated system that didn’t allow me to speak with a live agent. The only live agent I could reach was for roadside assistance, who admitted they couldn’t help but promised to escalate the issue. Despite this, the charges continued.
4. Forced to Freeze My Card: The daily charges didn’t stop, and I eventually had to freeze my card, report the charges as fraudulent, and get a new card issued to prevent further unauthorized charges. This entire process was stressful and time-consuming.
5. Unresolved Issues and Zero Accountability: To this day, I have not received my $200 deposit back, nor has Dollar Car Rental provided any explanation for the overcharges. Their lack of accountability and poor customer service is appalling.
6. Decent Car, Horrible Service: While the car itself was in good condition, the overall service was so horrendous that I cannot recommend this company to anyone. The stress and financial impact they caused far outweigh any benefits of renting from them.
Conclusion: Avoid Dollar Car Rental at all costs! Their service is disorganized, their customer support is nonexistent, and their billing practices are fraudulent. I have never experienced such an unprofessional and predatory company in my life. I will never rent from them again, and I strongly advise others to do the same. Rating: 0/5 stars.

I have to now return the car fully charged. Since I was not comfortable doing that, I was made to wait for 45 mins until they could arrange for a non EV car. I finally got one, but was charged an extra $72 for changing the car option. But I did not sign up for an EV in the first place.... Why should I be penalized? I recently rented a car from Dollar Car Rental at Buffalo Niagara International Airport and was hit with an undisclosed $139.95 fee from PlatePass after the rental period ended. Unfortunately, this experience has left me deeply disappointed with both companies, and I want to warn others about their unethical practices. When my wife and I picked up the car, the EZ-Pass transponder was already open and active, and we were given no information at the rental desk about optional toll services like PlatePass. As tourists from a city without toll roads, we reasonably assumed the transponder was part of the service. At no point were we informed that using the transponder would automatically enroll us in a $139.95 PlatePass All-Inclusive package.
After returning home, Dollar and PlatePass attempted to charge my credit card, but the transaction was flagged as potential fraud. When I contacted them, they acknowledged that the fees were not clearly explained at pickup and offered only a partial fee reduction—still expecting me to pay administrative charges I never knowingly opted into. The transponder was pre-activated when we got in the vehicle. We never had a chance to opt in or out. Even if the terms were buried in a lengthy rental contract, it is unreasonable to expect customers to comb through fine print for such critical information. It is clear that Dollar and PlatePass use this hidden-fee tactic to generate revenue at the expense of unsuspecting customers.
If you are planning to rent from Dollar or any company partnered with PlatePass, be extremely careful—check the transponder before driving off and ask detailed questions about their toll policy. I hope Dollar and PlatePass address this deceptive practice. But as it stands, I will not be using their services again and strongly recommend renters consider other options to avoid similar issues. To be clear, Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz are all owned by the same company.
In 2011, a class action lawsuit was filed against Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, and their partner PlatePass over allegations of undisclosed and misleading toll-related fees. Customers reported being charged excessive administrative fees without proper disclosure, and some were enrolled in toll programs without their knowledge or consent. The legal proceedings culminated in settlements between 2014 and 2019. Hertz agreed to an $11 million settlement to address complaints that it had charged customers without sufficient notice about the PlatePass fees. Dollar and Thrifty faced similar legal challenges. These cases highlight a pattern of complaints about the lack of transparency in toll-related programs offered by the Hertz Corporation. Be warned. Better yet, choose another rental company.

It was also very dirty inside and reeked of cigarette smoke despite me requesting a smoke free car. I went back to the office to request a different car but no agents were visible to address the condition of the car. I took the car and a day or 2 later completed a survey sent by Dollar. I mentioned the condition of the car and the smoke smell.
3 days later returned the car to the airport, signs said leave key in car, receipt will be emailed, no agents present. Emailed receipt had $500 'cleaning fee - smoke". I have never smoked a cigarette in my life and despise them. It’s outrageous to be charged $500 cleaning fee when it reeked of smoke when I picked it up, and there are no agents anywhere to address this. Fast forward to landing in Vegas and heading to complete my reservation. First of there were about 2 workers at the desk, and only about 5 people on the line. I didn't understand why it took them forever to where the line became so long. We finally get to the desk, license and debit card in hand.
Why these people tell me they do not accept my form of payment, then if I wanted to use my actual MCU bank card, it'll be a $500 hold fee. Asked for a manager, she had an attitude and told me there's nothing she can do there and provide me with a number. Called this, 1800-800-5252, let's just say, worst experience ever. I was told to fill a form online and someone from their department should reach out to me, hence this was August 28th 2024, today is September 13th 2024 and no one has yet to reach out to me. Called that number yet again on the 29th of August, I was lucky that morning, because that agent was actually kind and helpful. He canceled the reservation for me and supposedly released my funds. I was told it would take 3-5 business days for my funds to be returned to my account.
Called within those 5 days just to be told in fact it will take 7-10 business days. Today I called and let's just say I searched high and low for a platform where I can write a review. These people refuse to refund me money, they have such disgusting attitudes with their customers. I can't see how they are still in business. They need to be SHUT DOWN EXPEDITIOUSLY!!!!

I would give this company negative stars if I could. Last month, I made a car reservation earlier in the day and flew into PIT. My flight was delayed, I got in nearly around their closing time. When I spoke with the agent behind the desk, he was incredibly rude and ultimately told me that I "made my reservation too late" and that he didn't have any cars left. I asked then why was a reservation even posted online? He didn't have an answer for me.
I ended up being stranded at PIT and had to pay a taxi driver nearly $160 to drive me to Butler. But it was either that or sleep at the airport. When I reached out to Dollar Car Rental after getting charged $148, I was given a long answer suggesting I cancelled my reservation and that I would not be refunded. WHAT? Please, please do not rent with them. They are an untrustworthy company. I'm literally out almost $150; actually $300 if you include the taxi ride.

I rented a car with Dollar in Tennessee. When we returned the car, we dropped the key in the bin, as instructed. The next day I receive a charge for $250.00 for a lost key. I reached out to dollar, via email, since you can't get them on the phone, asking them to check the video surveillance that shows the key being dropped in the bin. They refused to check the video but didn't refuse to keep the $250.00 on my credit card. This is the poorest customer service I have ever dealt with. My recommendation is that NO third party should even have Dollar or its affiliates as a recommended rent a car service on their site. Trip advisor, Travelocity, Priceline.. you guys work too hard to have a weak company, like Dollar, bring your name down. Please remove them from your recommended list. No One should have to pay for something that is not owed.

I wish we could give zero stars! We had a reservation for a pick up at Union Station, Washington DC. What a nightmare! The clerk behind the counter was incredibly rude, wouldn't even look at my reservation on the computer and said I had to go to the Airport to get a car. She wouldn't answer any questions. All she did was sit there with attitude as if we were bothering her with questions about her job. When I tried to ask a clerk from Hertz a question, the Dollar clerk started yelling at me - threatening to call Security to have me removed and have me banned from Hertz/Dollar. I ended up having to pay for a taxi to then rent the same car which turned out to be more expensive due to the airport taxes and fees which they couldn't remove. You would think they would have offered an upgrade at least for the inconvenience. All they would say was - "This issue is not our fault (at the airport)."

This website makes you select at least one star. I give my experience 0 stars. This has been one of the worst car rental experiences I’ve ever had. Since day one when I picked up the rental car. The entire staff has been so rude. That acted like it was an inconvenience for me to rent a car from them. I rented the car for 20 days. On day 5 the car broke down. The oil filter completely fell out of the car and left me stranded. I called Dollar to let them know what happened and to see about getting a different car. They would not deliver a new car to me. In fact I had to wait 2 hours for the tow truck to come and get the car and tow it back in. I was not able to get into a different car until the original car was signed back in. And I also had to take and Uber back to the rental center to get a different car.
Once I got back to the rental center it took forever. And still had all the employees I had to deal with were being rude. They acted like they didn’t want to help me. Like I didn’t matter. Finally got this whole experience finished. Returned the car and finished my vacation. Looked at my credit card statement and was charged an additional $100 for the 2nd car that was to replace the car that broke down. And I was not supposed to be charged for that.
I have been trying to talk to somebody about the charge for about 2 weeks now. I have yet been able to talk to somebody in that department. Apparently they do not have a direct phone number. They only work through email and/or a link that you need to submit a request. I have done both at least 4 times now. I have not received a response from anybody. I have called and talked to supervisors about the situation. But since they are not in the billing dept there is nothing they can do. They just tell me to email them or submit a request on the link. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with a car rental company. And I rent cars several times a year.

If I could give them a ZERO, I would. I was given an electric vehicle as a 'manager's special'. I was told it was fully charged and that I would have a range of 260 miles. The car I received only had a 30% charge and I had to stop on my 55 mile drive to charge it. I called the company to let them know and all they could tell me was the nearest charging station. After 2 hours and a missed appointment, I was able to get it charged to 32% and the rest of the 20 miles to my destination. To make a long story short, after several calls and charging stations over the 3 days (including an 9 hour overnight charge) I could not get the car to go above 11%.
The company still insisted it was my fault and charged me $457.00 to have it towed back to the original airport in Syracuse. I paid $370 in Uber fees and almost missed my flight. I have not received any apology or compensation after several calls and requests. Along with a manager telling me "everything was ok, BUD", the level of professionalism was obviously also very lacking. I missed my vacation and was not able to get to family having a medical emergency.

Don't ever go to this company to rent a vehicle. My experience with them over the weekend has been terrible. After booking my airline, there was an attachment which showed Dollar car rental. I went ahead and book them for 4 days. On the website, it showed that their rate was $24 per day. Upon my arrival, I started searching for my credit card, but to no avail. I proceeded to use my debit card, which I was told by the Rep that they'll have to take $500, as a security. Now, I've had the car from Friday evening - Tues morning. I've filled the tank and returned it earlier that even specified.
I kept checking my account to see if they had refunded my money after taking payments for those days, only to realize that, not only did they take the entire $500 but they've also gone to take an additional $180. My trip was just for 4 days locally.... Georgia to be exact, so why did I have to pay that enormous rate. Stay away from this company. There are hidden stuff that they don't explain to us.

BEWARE!!! Please save yourself money, time and frustration and book a car from ANYONE OTHER than Dollar. If Dollar is your cheapest option, don't worry, you'll pay later. If you have a question or change of plans that require reservation edits where you need to speak with a human, good luck remaining on hold for 30 minutes-up to 2 hours. If you are lucky enough to reach a human (that you can't understand), they will jack up the price so much so that you begin to believe that you've been funneled to scammers from an independent company in India where they get a cut of the price increase. My flight was cancelled and I needed to change my pick-up/drop off dates. You CAN'T make these kinds of changes on the website forcing you to call. I called the number on the website and cross checked it with Google.
After on hold for 45 minutes, the "agent" told me that my original $450 reservation was now going to cost $1400. When I questioned the price, I was put on hold. When the "agent" returned, I was given a lower price of $1050. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was promptly disconnected. Not having time to wait on the phone again for half the day, I gave up and hoped my reservation had not been cancelled when I arrived at my destination. Upon arrival to pick up my car at the airport Dollar Rental counter, I was shocked, but relieved, to find that my reservation was still active and I was only charged $133 for changing my reservation.
So...who did I speak with on the phone via the number on the Dollar website who wanted to charge me over double for the same reservation???? Though I was grateful that I ultimately received a Dollar car, I and others waited over an hour in line to get to the counter while watching EVERY OTHER car rental company sail through their lines leaving only Dollar with a standing line of over 30 people with children and luggage waiting an hour+. Though the Dollar airport counter employees seemed to be trying, it was a Hot Mess behind the counter with employees struggling with their computer system, keys, crowd management and frustrated customers. Several other customers were also sitting there waiting for a car.
Watched as Hertz customers walked directly to their car without issue. Over AN HOUR later a car was finally available. Then trying to get the car out of the rental center was not possible because Dollar didn't have any of the booths open to check the car out. To add insult to injury, I returned the car prior to opening hours due to an early flight. Since no personnel were on site, I placed the keys in the key drop box right next to the Dollar office in the garage and they charged me $400 dollars for keys THAT WERE IN THEIR POSSESSION. Reading these reviews shows Dollar is truly scamming customers out of money. I booked through Priceline and was supposed to be charged only the remaining balance of $130 at the time of pickup. I got to the counter and was told I had to pay $488.10, which was for a “Refundable damage deposit that will be returned to my account once the car is returned.” It turns out that charge was NOT a refundable damage deposit, but a LDW costing $35 a day, which was more than the car itself. They also downgraded my vehicle, and charged me FULL price as if I had not booked through Priceline. I had gone through my credit card company to dispute the charge but was told I signed the rental agreement so there is nothing they can do. One star as "0" was not an option. I can't stress enough...DO NOT rent from this company. Rented in ATL airport, and waited over two hours for a vehicle. Said "no" to all insurances and was charged for a 'loss damage waiver' (which I signed for, not paying attention to my receipt). I had a flat tire on my return trip to the airport to catch a flight home, with no spare in the car (3/31/24 approx. 7 pm). I called Dollar roadside assistance who indicated they would have to order a tow truck. I was told that the tow truck would be there within 60-90 minutes and that the estimated cost would be $300. Called back after not hearing from anyone after an hour and fifteen minutes, told that the previous representative had not finished the claim properly and that a tow truck had not been ordered yet. The 2nd representative, put in for a tow truck and indicated that I would hear from a tow truck company soon.
After not hearing from anyone for a while, I called again, indicating that I needed to get to the airport, and asked about leaving the car and taking a Lyft/Uber to the airport so that I would not miss my flight. Although nervous about leaving the car with the keys in it, I had no choice. The car was not picked up until 8:30-9:00 am the following day. All the while, I was receiving notifications from different tow companies that took the job and then dropped it. The best part was when I received a bill for $778 on top of the money I had already paid upfront. After receiving this bill, I tried to reach out to customer service, but there is no customer service. I was instructed to submit an inquiry via their online site. I submitted two inquiries via their online customer service, with no reply. I sent a certified letter to the company, only to have it returned to me unopened.
Days later someone did respond to the online inquiry, which said, "Too bad you did not pay for roadside assistance." I sent them an email and included the letter about my experience (that was returned unopened) as well as this outlandish bill which was returned to me as well. Did not hear back, until I sent another follow-up email about a week later. The result is nothing. They "are sorry for our experience" but cannot absorb any of the cost. This company does not care about its customers, there is no customer service. I have been renting a car from Tucson International Airport for 10 years (my father lives here). Today, after having pre-paid for part of the car, even uploading my Danish driver's license (I am an American living in Denmark) and my credit card details, when I got to the counter, I was told I needed to show not only my driver's license, but my passport, which I left at my father's since I have never needed it to rent a car previously.
I asked to speak to the manager - Mike. Mike said he would not budge, would absolutely not wave the requirement, wouldn't do one thing to help me, stone-walled me really coldly and rudely, and said I could cancel my reservation or pay an Uber 70 bucks to get my passport. He was extremely unkind and ungracious. I spent 2.5 hours sorting this out.
I went to the Avis counter and spoke to a very helpful man who said they would accept my driver's license as long as I could show them my return ticket from Tucson, and we worked it out. But I had to call Expedia, cancel the reservation, and then rebook, the entire affair was totally draining and unnecessary. Mike could have helped, but simply chose not to. Dollar NEVER mentioned in any of their material - that they require a passport to accompany a foreign driver's license. This was a really bad experience. I'll never use Dollar again. Ever. And I recommend you avoid the hassle and do the same.

I would give them a zero if I could. Even though I checked in online and declined all extra charges - after waiting in line for 45 minutes (!!) at the airport to collect the car, I didn't check the paperwork closely enough and was charged for extra insurance and a prepaid tank of gas (which again, I had verbally declined and declined in writing when checking in online). Dollar refused to budge on the charges and totally took advantage of me being tired - ugh.

THIS COMPANY IS HORRIBLE. DO NOT USE THEM. They don't deserve 1 star. MY CREDIT CARD WAS OVERCHARGED BY $464.91. I have made several attempts to resolve the issue via communications thru their customer service website and over the phone. Typically most phone calls in which I was able to connect to a person I experienced long hold time prior to someone answering. Then I was placed on hold and mysteriously disconnected. I rented thru EXPEDIA and they did not honor the $204 payment made thru Expedia and charged me for 9 days of additional rental while the vehicle was in their position sitting in their Jacksonville Airport parking lot while I was at home in a completely different state.
Unfortunately the HERTZ car company which owns DOLLAR car rental was synonymous with quality and excellence, has come on hard times and it would appear that they have resorted to fraudulent practices in order to stay afloat. I have no intention of ever using these companies and/or subsidiaries to the best of my ability. I travel frequently and will seek better establishments to spend my money. I had the money, I had a balance on my debit card, but even so, they didn't offer any kind of help. I continued my trip without having the car that I paid for. The amount charged was 294. Too little too late, realized they still added it, and had me blindly sign the rental agreement after adding an extra $60/day for this. After much back and forth, I disputed the extra charges with my CC, and now they’re emailing me threatening to send me to collections. Seems this is just standard business practices for them. We didn't want to waste more to return back to exchange another car. So we drove in the rain then in the snow weather with this car.
We filled the gas full, paid cash for tolls before the drop off. After we dropped off the car, we noticed we were still charged additional $22.80. Tried to find out what's the charge for. Oh my God. I wish I could erase the one star I gave and give no stars to a representative at Dollar Rent A Car located in Dallas Love Field Airport name KAREN. She was the absolute worst representative of any company there could ever be.... When I came in on 3/26/24 to simply extend a rental car that I had rented 7 days prior. I was in town due to my mother being put on hospice care so I was already feeling very fragile. I had already spoken with customer service so this process should have gone very smoothly. However as I was trying to transfer the $336 it was going to cost me to extend my rental car for another 7 days.
Karen must was having a very bad day or maybe just didn't want to be at work on 3/26 because my card declined due to her not allowing me to transfer the money from my savings into my checking account so that the transaction could be processed successfully, I mean it was really bad. She refused to allow me to use another credit card, she refused to give any sort of service, heck she refuse to re run the card they processed on 3/19 when I rented the car. I ask for a manager. She then lied and said that she was a manager and the only person to speak with. I later found out that she's not a manager. She is a lead who has been with Dollar for a while and has a very very very long history of bad reviews.
I'm not sure why Dollar would allow this type of behavior at the forefront of their customer service counter. KAREN has extensive bad attitude reviews and horrible customer service with Dollar rental and in doing my review I've read a couple of KAREN horror reviews on Google, Yelp, heck Karen even has bad reviews on Dollar's own website. This KAREN is a piece of work and it's very unfortunate that Dollar would allow someone like this to represent them in such a horrible mannerism. It's almost mind blowing that Dollar would allow KAREN to remain a lead when it's quite obvious that she needs more training and is not fit to lead anyone. Dollar as a company should not want KAREN treating your customers this way nor training anyone else to do so.
I could go on and on about the horrible and pretty much disgusting and degrading customer service that Karen gave but I wrapped it up with this. I ended this horrible experience by telling Karen she was getting a kick out of making it hard for me to extend my rental car because I told her originally that it was not right that she did not ask me or allow me to transfer the money to pay for the extension of the car originally which would have been an in and out process. As I was walking out she was huffing and puffing. I honestly just didn't have the time to deal with KAREN'S ignorance.. Later on that day another Dollar representative helped me and that story will be in my next review. He was completely awesome, very helpful and he should train Karen.... Maybe she wouldn't get so many crappy reviews if she took some advice from her coworkers and peers.

I invested quite some time on the case, I had to pull the receipt, I tried several approaches to speak to someone to no avail. The rental record card showed we were going to be charged for 5 days; however, our final bill showed we were charged for 6 days - so, with taxes and fees, we paid a total of $513.28 vs. the $318.06 we originally expected.
Upon realizing that we were charged for the extra day, and not happy due to the misleading quote on the charge, I called customer service. She told me that I needed to call Expedia, even though Dollar Car Rental were the ones who put the charge through for 6 days - when I tried to clarify that, she hung up on me!!!! Oh - and our battery died the first day, stranding us for two to three hours between getting a jump and the battery replaced, with no compensation or discount for our inconvenience and trouble.

Initially Dollar told me they could not resolve my issues with the mistruths from their staff on rental costs. However, two days later I received an email indicating that they would refund me $965 dollars, which doesn’t quite make me whole, but comes close enough that I will consider renting from them in the future (but not trust what any Dollar employee says). Despite my frustration with costs not being as promised, the vehicle was in good shape, clean and performed well. Thanks to Dollar for essentially resolving the issue.
Original Review: Nov. 10, 2023
I originally reserved a vehicle through Expedia. I called Dollar the day of the rental inquiring about drivers and wanted to have my husband be the main driver. They said I had to change the reservation but that the cost would be the same. We specifically discussed the costs - but when we rented, the costs were significantly different. The Expedia cost included the drop off fee and the taxes but the new reservation did not. This was about $700 different. Then at the rental counter, they said there would be no fee to add me as a driver and we could stop at any dollar office and do this. A few days later my husband was not feeling well so we dropped by a Dollar office and added me as a driver. When we returned the car a fee of $45 dollars was added to our rental for an additional driver.
Finally we were not explained the toll fee of $27.99 per day - we did not even use the vehicle a few days and did not use the tolls for about 2/3 of our 15 day trip. This charge added up and is not reasonable and was not reasonably explained. We feel that we were mislead and told false things about our rental fees on three occasions and this cost us approximately $1,000 additional on our rental. I reached out to Dollar to express dissatisfaction and they said since we signed the rental agreement, there was nothing they could do. We will not rent from Dollar again.

I pre-paid for my car at JAX and when I arrived at the airport I was surprised about additional fees. When I inquired I was told that $180 of the fees were airport taxes (with no documentation provided). I mistakenly took the agent for his word. We got up at 3am and it was 1pm - we were exhausted!! Because I signed the electronic pad they won't provide a refund for all of the add ons that were placed on my bill. I now paid an additional $274 for a $200 rental car - and I didn't get what I rented. I called customer service and "because they have my signature from the pad..." RUN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!!

I called to rebook and they charged me $100 to cancel AND increased my rate (2X). Now I have been on the phone w/ customer service trying to get my original rate honored; has been a nightmare. No one person can fit it; they make you call again in the future, email, and upload proof of the rate despite them seeing my old and new reservation information. Arrived at night and our prepaid vehicle was not available. No surprise there, but we were okay with the substitute. Throughout the weeklong rental, we kept receiving low tire warnings and promptly put air in the tire shown on the display (driver's front). After a few days, we surmised that it was a faulty sensor and planned on giving that feedback upon returning the car. On the way back to the airport, the other front tire blew out (passenger's front). Looking at the display, it still showed the blown out tire as being fine and was still showing the same error for the other tire. We checked the trunk for a spare tire, but there wasn't one even though there was a space where it should be, so we called for a tow.
The tow truck driver said that the sensors were reversed and that the person rotating the tires didn't properly align the sensors. He also showed us that the steel radial belt was showing through on BOTH the front tires, putting us at risk (we had just driven to the top of a mountain the previous day). He said we were lucky to be alive. The manager at the rental car desk at the airport was completely unsympathetic, even after seeing the pictures, and said we still had to pay for the tow since we had declined the protection plan. We paid it, but they lost us as a customer forever and we travel frequently.

While waiting I, along with many others, was never given a time estimate for when I would get a car. When I finally did get a car it was an upgrade for a higher price. Additionally, there was no place to sit while waiting so most people were sitting on the hard floor.

I paid 500 for the rental car on Expedia, which was SUPPOSED to be a hidden vehicle that was supposed to be a small SUV or larger. I get there to find out the vehicle had supposedly been revealed after I purchased (so I was told), and it was an EV SUV. So to my surprise, I paid $500 for an electric vehicle in which I am not familiar with operating or charging. I declined at the counter. He said he could upgrade me for $133 to a gas SUV. I was ready to walk away from this but in checking with other companies last minute, I was better off staying with Dollar. I just now got my statement emailed to me and could not believe all the extra charges they add on. Service fee, facilities fee, drop off fee, ** fee, cause we can fee, and then taxed all the fees!
I should have never been charged all this as all I paid for to them was an upgrade charge. So basically I was charged fees twice. Once through the booking company, and once to them. TOTAL RIP OFF!!! NEVER NEVER NEVER will I use this rip-off company again, OR Hertz OR any of their affiliates, as they will surely do the same in the future. STAY AWAY FROM DOLLAR RENTAL!!!

I recently rented a Kia Rio from Dollar Rent A Car in Omaha. The process went smoothly and the customer service agent was friendly enough. When renting the car, she asked if I would like to have them refill the car for me since they only charge $2.99 per gallon for gas. I declined their offer since it was against my work policy. After I got my receipt, I saw that I was not charged for gas, which is fine, but the agent failed to tell me that on top of the $2.99 per gallon of gas, it would have also been a $9.99 per gallon refueling charge. So had I not filled up myself on the way back, I would have been charged essentially $12.98 per gallon. They did not mention the refueling charge, which is completely misleading and deceptive.
Also, when I rented the car, I reserved one with unlimited mileage, but the agent tried to tell me I could only drive 200 miles. I told her that it should have been unlimited and she told me that's fine as long as I kept the car in the states bordering Nebraska - not sure why that matters. Second, the car I had was not in good shape. It had roughly 65,000 miles, which is fine... But the suspension on the car was pretty much shot, the windshield wipers only streaked up the window, and the sunglasses holder kept falling down in front of my rear view mirror. I mentioned these issues with the car to the person when I checked it back in and she just shrugged her shoulders and said "ok". I'm guessing nothing will be done. I followed the signs to the Dollar return area and pulled up along the curb where the attendants were collecting the cars. I waited until the man approached me and asked if that was where I should leave the car. It was basically just a pull up lane. He said yes.
On Tuesday, Aug. 15th I received a call from the Hertz manager saying that I returned the car to the Avis parking lot. I explained where I returned it. She said she could send me a picture of it parked in the Avis lot. I assured her I am not the one who parked it there, I left it with the attendant. She said, "Well, where are the keys then?" I said I wasn't sure, I left them with the attendant. She said since the car was supposed to be returned the prior Thursday, that I would be charged until that Tuesday when they located the car. Very Dishonest Company. DO NOT RENT FROM DOLLAR AT THE KONA AIRPORT!!!! Was charged for services I didn't ask for (actually declined them verbally with two witnesses). I did approve the prepaid gas, and when I accepted that, he had thrown the other two charges in there to group with it. I asked him about the amounts when he printed the receipt and he told me they were just standard daily rental rates, and the amount shown included my prepayment and damage deposit. None of which was true. I signed the paper based on false info and unaware that they tacked on the services that I declined. I looked at it more closely after leaving in the car, and got that bad feeling that I had just been scammed.
When I called customer service they agreed that it was a mistake and confirmed that the prepayment and damage deposit were not included, and they put a note in the system. Told me to bring it up when I returned the car to get a refund. They refused to reverse the charges, and the manager wouldn't speak to me about it. I then escalated with customer service, and I got the canned answer that I signed the agreement and would not get a refund. I can't believe this so called car company will not hold its employees to any level of ethical standard. Will never do business with them in the future.

Rented a car at the Orlando Airport online. The price quoted was decent, so I put money down when renting using my credit card. My laptop security provides a Alias number online to help with fraud protection. I waited in line an hour, to be told that because I didn’t have the Alias card number on hand, I would have to call customer service, cancel the card on the reservation and then pay with my physical card at the desk. Went through the process, was told cost would be the same…got back to the desk, and cost had gone up by $75…not that big of a deal. However, they pulled a complete bait and switch on me.
The male customer service rep asked if I wanted insurance- I declined. He then continued to go thru the costs with me- there was a $249 charge, that he told Me was just a “deposit” and I would get back when returning. He conveniently had his hand over the wording- just showing me the dollar amounts. When I got my receipt in my email, that amount was not taken off. I have called multiple times- and they said I agreed because I signed the form, then they would call and see if the Orlando airport Dollar rent a car manager would agree to a refund- that they would email me. Multiple calls and weeks later- nothing. I will never rent again from This company, and will Make sure to pass my experience along to all my traveling friends. Dishonest is an understatement.

We were rented a van that had a nail in tire that was marked by a green marker. We didn’t see this until we had driven an hour and stopped for lunch. We immediately called the roadside service emergency number on the receipt. We were told they would send out a tow truck at our expense or we could drive it back and get a new van. We had already waited almost 2 hours to get the van to begin with, and these options were not acceptable to us. We went to AAA Tire and Auto Service and had a professional review of the tire: told tire was not fixable by its location. Given options of driving on it carefully for the four days and carefully monitoring it, and if began losing air AAA would put spare on for us. Our entire trip we were always concerned that it would blow out. Thankfully We made it back but we were told we would have to pay for the tire…and this was after long waits, and being told, this was Dollar’s protocol by a rude manager!
This all is outrageous. We since have been in touch with the corporate office and the tire cost was removed from our credit card —so that is good. However, there was no recognition that we had called the emergency roadside service number and given THE UNACCEPTABLE OPTIONS!!! (As written above!) Also there was no offer of discount for our experience and no real apology for the lack of help from emergency number and the letter they sent us was that we should’ve called the emergency line which showed us that they had never really read the letter that we sent them. It was probably a form letter. We feel very dissatisfied with this treatment! Dollar should look at their protocol if this is a true statement by the manager. How sad the whole situation is to us!

We picked up the car at RSW airport at night time when we made the reservation while ago and paid online in advance, they told us at the airport to go get any SUV from 5 star area and they were only a few cars left there. Two smelled really bad. One was super dirty. One had no key left inside the car. Once we grabbed and started to leave got a light on that the key fob has an issue, Next one when we were leaving the gate saying tire pressures is low and we showed it at the exit and he said get another one not helpful at all. The last car left for us was an old super dirty Toyota Rav 4 and we had no options left so we got that and left and in the middle of the highway it started shaking and making loud noises. Felt like tires are getting apart. Was so scary so we had to call our family and let them know if we die it's from this rental car.
We were tired and it was late night in a new city and we called the emergency number on the paper work to seek help and no one answered. Following day we left an email and review for someone to contact us to see if we can switch the car in another branch and again no one contacted us. Airport was too far from where we were staying so we couldn't go back. So imagine new city and you want to enjoy your vacation but we tried the car again and again so scary to drive making real loud noises and shaking so we just drove it hardly during daytime and at night time we had to get Uber and taxi for several days. So what is the point to rent a car in advance and pay money and again you end up paying a lot more for taxis??
When we were returning we asked for a manager at the counter. He wasn't helpful again saying, "You got it from a third party so you need to contact our 800 number" and gave me the number. Called the number. Was on hold for over an hour and at the end they said they can't refund or do anything and we have to contact Expedia since we haven't paid them directly. I don't recommend Dollar rent a car to anyone. Very very bad experience and glad we are alive. We have pictures and videos from the car.

I want to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the service I received from Dollar. I am beyond furious that a company can blatantly mistreat its customers like this. It's completely unacceptable. I flew in from Vancouver Canada to Santa Ana on July 24th and had my reservation in hand for a vehicle pick-up at 1:30 pm. This is when the nightmare began: Arrived at the counter and the clerk informs me there are no cars available and that they will call us in 3 hours. They never called. At around 5pm, I called Dollar to follow up. I was given the run-around by their customer service department. I ended up talking to 5 different people and no one could help me out,
The first representative gave me the number of Santa Ana Dollar Rentals. So I gave them a call and after waiting 20 minutes to get through I was put back in the queue at the same department. The next person I spoke with said, "I'll transfer to you customer service - they can help you out." She transfers the call to a voice mail that says, "Welcome to Hertz , we are now closed." I call back again and speak with Angelie. I ask to speak with a supervisor and sit on hold for another 10 minutes at which point I'm disconnected. I then call back again and spoke with May who says, "There is really nothing we can do. You have to wait for the call from Dollar at the John Wayne Airport?" No one ever called me back. My vacation was only 5 days and I had preplanned numerous day trips that required a vehicle. We had to resort to using Uber.
In this day and age, customer service is everything. Why didn't the agent at the counter call me back after 3 hours? Why didn't anyone in Customer Service call me back or a supervisor as I requested. I submitted an email on July 24th to Dollar's customer service department at the advice of one of the customer service representatives. No response. Our vacation has now ended and we never received a call back an email response nor did we receive rental car even though we had a reservation and prepaid for it! We spent close to $1000 in Ubers, and $60 in prepaid parking that we didn't use. I'm absolutely shocked that an organization of this size can get away with treating customers this way. They obviously just don't care. So disappointing.

My daughter rented a car from Dollar Car and prepaid. It was her first car rental. She paid ahead of time to make sure the transaction would go alright. She waited in a long line at the Durham NC location. The rep asked some rapid fire questions and told her to sign the payment form. Arriving back at the hotel and reviewing the bill more closely, she saw there were about $200 extra added to the bill in fees and charged to her credit card. It was too far to drive back to the airport.
After navigating through numerous phone menus and waiting and waiting, she got thru to customer service. After explaining that extra fees had been added to the bill without her consent, the customer service agent said, sorry - there is nothing she could do. You can resolve it when you return the car and I will note on the record you have called regarding the bill discrepancy.
On returning the car a couple of days later, we explained the above sequence of events. No, they could not help us, even if we had called previously to explain the problem. We would have to call customer service to help us. Well, customer service told us to talk to the agents at the Durham airport. Basically, no one could help us. No one could resolve the issue. The manager was unhelpful, rude and dismissive. When I got home, I called customer service. No, they could not help us either, but they would send us a coupon for $100 credit, which did not even cover the over charge. That was insulting, but when the coupon arrived it was for $50, which was even more insulting.

The amounts were only a few dollars apart and absolutely incorrect as they charged again for car and upgrades, not just the upgrades. I have tried multiple times to correct it and they continued to say I had not paid the fees the first time. I have shown to them I did, and now they refuse to return the money by saying I agreed to it. I understand I should have reviewed closer, but what kind of company is this? When we arrived at the desk the agent insisted we upgrade from economy car to midsize for more room which was only a 30 dollar upgrade. When we booked the car was only 67 dollars through Priceline so 30 dollar upgrade is a good deal. Still under 100. When bringing the car back we noticed that the agent has added a bunch of upgrade fees such as added driver, added insurance, location recovery, etc. That brought the car to $397!!
I told the agent that I did not ask for those upgrades and after filling out forms that took an hour to fill out he assured me that I would not be charged. I was charged anyway and the original amount of 97 as well!! I filed a complaint with Discover and after months of investigation Dollar was awarded their 397 and 97 dollars. The column was perfectly in my blind spot and I turned too quickly and scraped and dented the door. The repair bill was sent to my insurance who found Dollar failed to provide evidence they cost that much. My insurance company kept in constant contact with me and has requested documentation several times but Dollar will not return their calls. When you rent from them you sign something that says in the event of damages, YOU the driver will have to seek payment from the insurance, the driver is responsible for all amounts due.
The only communication I have received from Dollar is a statement, a threat to send to collections and harassing calls saying they will sue if I don’t pay. The claim is still under review with my insurance today and I am in collections with dollar for them not fulfilling their obligations. This has tanked my credit and caused significant stress. After making a reservation, I realized a simple mistake with the date and immediately contacted customer service. Their response was appalling - they refused to make any changes or offer a refund, showing a complete lack of empathy. I strongly advise avoiding this car rental company. Their inflexible policies and disregard for customer satisfaction highlight their profit-driven approach. I have never encountered such an unaccommodating attitude from a car rental company before. Based on this distressing experience, I highly recommend considering alternative rental options that prioritize customer satisfaction. Additionally, my disappointment extends to Expedia, as they were unable to assist me. Save yourself the trouble and explore other options for both car rentals and booking platforms.
