I rented a car from Budget at the Palm Springs Ca. airport for 10 days. At day seven I received a call from Miami Fl that the vehicle I rented was turned in at the Florida office. I told them I’m still in the car and am in California. I was told to return to the airport and get another contract. I did and now I’m being charged twice. Way too many scams with this company.

Worst experience ever! Not only did I have to wait almost 2 hours in line to get to the counter to pick up the car I ordered online; a representative walked away for 30 minutes while there were still dozens of people in line. We get the car and it creaks at every turn, stop, go, bump and so on. Then after spending over $1600 to rent the car, they send me a bill for $450 for cleaning. Their reasoning, "excessive dirt and trash." I was expecting a minor cleaning fee due to 4 kids in a car for 2 weeks, but we picked up our trash, missed a few bottles of water, and a little bit of sand from the national park we visited, and a few leaves. But $450 is what they said would be the cleaning fee if we smoked in it, no other notations. There were a few times the creaking was so bad we were sure that it was going to break down on us.

I am disappointed with Budget's treatment of my rental in Toronto, Ontario. We rented a Tesla model 3 and I was given a car with a single key card that was left in the car. No need to mention that it was tricky to figure out how to start it, there is no start button, or how to lock it when I parked at the end of the drive and tried to walk away. The problem is that the car was set to require the key card to be taken out and placed under console to start up and drive. Once I parked in a garage, I walked out to the trunk, picked up luggage and saw the car power down and lock up... while the key was still inside of the car.
This is a problem in non-default settings in tesla car. It took much trying to get Budget support to respond and unlock the car remotely. Nobody was sent to help me, just the manager who was not picking up my calls had to pull out a phone and unlock remotely. Despite the fact that the car was misconfiguration, I was charged $50 and Budget customer support is refusing to remove this charge and admit that I was inconvenienced due to their own defects in the car settings.

I picked a mini van at Midway in Chicago as only way a discounts was available (35% - ok as lived within 20 mins). But the address is wrong for the pick up is actually is on Laramie street - one block of west of provided provided address. There are no signs that all rentals can be accessed via a black steel gate located next to an Authorized vehicle sign on the gate and gate can only be seen once you’re nearly on it - see pictures. The guard at the address tried to explain but the picture/explanation wasn’t so clear. Not Budget's fault as ALL rentals were centralized by airport and their signs within the structure are confusing and the three people I stopped to get information said the same thing. Better Budget website and email instructions would super help pickup. The actual pickup was great as I had a reservation but wait was a little long at 10am on Friday.

I rented a car online from Budget in August for my travels to Bari, Italy in September. In short, the contract was not honored, and I was charged extra money at the counter. I didn’t mind that as much as the fact that our car had a strong odor of cat urine. We rented the car because my husband is handicap and cannot walk easily through the town. I tried to return the call, but I was told that I would have to go all the way back to the airport as there was no budget facility where we were. We drove the car only we needed with the windows open – needless to say it was disgusting and unbearable!
When we return the car, we immediately brought it to the attention of the representative and also advise him that the car was dirty and had a flat tire that we fixed upon rental. I wrote to budget upon arrival to the United States and was given a special reference code **. Hey, we are going into November and I still haven’t heard back from them. Lesson learned – Never will I rent a car from budget again!!!

I had an extremely disappointing experience with Budget rental car company and their customer service. I've always been aware that some rental companies have a reputation for questionable practices, but I never thought I’d be a victim of it myself—until Budget made it happen. As a loyal customer of Enterprise, I’ve consistently had positive experiences. However, due to flight timing and distance constraints, I was forced to rent from Budget, and it turned out to be a huge mistake.
To begin with, Budget’s customer service was unclear and lacked transparency, especially when it came to fee breakdowns. For tourists and first-time customers, this information should be clearly presented before signing any paperwork. Instead, they quoted a seemingly low daily rate, only to surprise me with hidden fees on my credit card later.
When I tried to address these unexpected charges, I was met with a lack of competence and professionalism. The customer service agents were poorly trained and unhelpful, merely repeating the same information from the receipt—information I already had in front of me—without offering any clarity. To make matters worse, they hung up on me three separate times while I was trying to ask basic questions. It felt like talking to a robot that was programmed to be uncooperative rather than a human being with the ability to understand and solve problems.
My experience with Budget has taught me, and I hope it serves as a warning to others, to be cautious and avoid companies that engage in deceptive practices. I would much rather know the full cost upfront, even if it’s higher, than deal with hidden fees and incompetent service. For Budget, I strongly recommend taking a page from Enterprise’s book and investing in proper customer experience training. Customers deserve honesty and transparency, and Budget failed miserably on both counts.

Epic Failure! We reserved a premium SUV at the St. Louis Airport, STL (offsite), and included our flight information. We arrived at the rental desk; it took over 90 minutes to check in, then waited outside in the direct sunlight in over 90-degree weather for over an hour waiting for our rental to be ready. I had my 87 year old mother-in-law, 92 and 80-year-old aunts, 9-year-old, and my wife with me. There was limited shade and no water for hydration while we waited. When the SUV finally arrived, we did a quick walk around and did not note any significant damage. We could not see the long crack in the windshield in the direct sunlight. We noticed the crack about 300 feet out of the rental lot.
Given our over 90 minute wait in the heat and sun, we did not return to the lot only to get back in the line at the end. We photographed the crack and mileage and continued our journey. About another 4-5 miles down the road, I noticed the vehicle had on a 1/8 of a tank of gas. Again, we photographed the mileage and fuel level and continued our journey ($70 to fill the tank). When we returned the vehicle at Kansas City Airport (MCI) I told the clerk about the crack and the fuel issue. He could have cared less about the fuel and called over a supervisor to look at the windshield. I explained the situation, and the supervisor told us to "not worry about it." A week later, I received an invoice from Budget stating I owed $599 for the damaged window, of which I immediately filed a dispute and contacted customer service. I'm waiting for a response from Budget.
Before using this rental company, based on my personal experience, I encourage you to consider how valuable your vacation time is and if wasting 90 minutes or more waiting for your rental vehicle is worth your time; consider if billing you for existing damage and adding to you family vacations costs is worth using Budget and being ignored as a valuable customer is an acceptable value and practice of a business. This is how I was left to feel after renting from Budget. I will tell you that I will never rent from Budget/Avis Group again.

I would give ZERO stars if I could. Waited over TWO HOURS for a car at OKC airport after being pulled out of line since I was a preferred member. Was told to go to inside booth and then told they couldn't help me and to get back at end of line. After the experience and being told to contact customer service for a refund, their online customer service credited another renter's account, sent me their receipt, breached their security and still sent lie after lie thru email... After a month and wasting way too much time I gave up on any sort of refund. Absolutely ZERO customer service or organization--crazy a company of this size.

I would give a zero if possible. I reserved two 12 passenger vans 5 months in advance (for a group outing) from the Tucson airport location. 2 days before, I cancelled one since our numbers dropped. So we drove to the airport to pick up the other one, and I was told it was unavailable. The agent said Kamala was coming to town and politicians get priority. So I asked for a manager. He said that the van was damaged and unrentable. 2 different stories!!! What about the other van that was reserved??? "We can offer you a 4 passenger sedan." REALLY? When returning a rental to the facility. Make sure you get a paper receipt and proof that you're returned the car. This facility has a tendency to not close your contract out for days and up to a week while your credit card is still being built on a daily basis. It has happened to be twice in one week and happened to me twice before over the years. I'm a fast break member with Budget and have been for over thirty years and this is the only airport facility budget at Islip airport that I've had problems with. Also if you have a night reservation good luck with that. Sometimes the employees leave earth early. And you get stranded.

We flew to Charlotte from Minneapolis and prepaid for a Budget car weeks in advance. We had to wait 1 hour and 45 minutes to get a vehicle. We were assigned an EV which needed recharging before returning. It took us more than 3 hours to find a charging station and then we had to add an app to our phone to use it. It took an additional 90 minutes to charge the car. All this for a one day rental. We are in our 70’s and knew nothing about EVs or how or where to charge one. I complained to the counter when I returned the car and was told I would receive a refund. That was two weeks ago and it never happened.

We came into town for our son's hockey tournament. Our flight got in at roughly 10:30, the desks were closed at the airport, which we only knew because of other people trying to get their rentals, not because of any communication from Budget. We took the shuttle to the Budget rental place and arrived at 10:35. We stood in line until after midnight which at that point by the time we got to the desk we were told there were no longer any gas vehicles available and our only option was electric. No one advised us that we should probably charge up when we could because there are not many charging stations around. We advised we wanted to keep all the same options we had on our pre-check minus the gas obviously since it was electric. We were told to stick our card into the card reader and asked, "Do you want insurance?" We said "No" and were told "okay click agree."
We were asked this the same way for all the options which we declined all but the Toll and with all we were told the same thing "okay please click agree". There was nothing to read on the credit card reader other than agree or no. Since we were answering the questions as the lady was doing it and being told click okay we thought we were on the same page, since AGAIN there was NOTHING for us to read to know what we were signing.
We missed a few of our son's games as we had to drop him off and frantically drive around to find a charging station that the app provided by Budget would say had availability but when we got there it was not the case so we would have to wait 45+ minutes to get a charging station then wait 45+ minutes to charge the car. Then after we return the car we got our bill only to find out that we were charged over $200 more than what we had agreed to. When I called to inquire I was told that we agreed to all of the things that we had said no to. I have cancelled the rental that we had for our future hockey trip and will be using someone else. I am hoping that Budget will resolve this without needing to get the BBB involved.

Updated on 01/06/2025: Near the end of Sept, 2024, my wife and I showed up at the Budget office at JFK airport to pick up a car we’d reserved months before, They had no cars and no sense of when they would have any, including well into the next day. They said they could put us on a waitlist, and our number would be #20. We were heading home after a transatlantic flight, and home was 5 hours away. We had to get a hotel for the night, take a train into the city, eat dinner and breakfast in the city, and get a bus home from Manhattan the next day. It cost us many hundreds of dollars, when the car would have been about $90. It was a frustrating and angering pain in the **.
Once home, I tried to connect with Budget customer service to report our story, express how I felt, and hopefully get some kind of compensation for our experience. It turns out connecting with Budget customer service is impossible. It probably doesn’t exist. So, I wrote a couple of detailed and pointedly negative reviews on social media and eventually received a response from Budget’s “social media dept.” They asked me to complete a formal report, then after a couple of weeks sent me a letter apologizing and giving me a coupon for a free three day rental anytime before the end of 2025.
A few weeks ago, in early December, I tried to use the coupon to reserve a Budget car for an upcoming trip at an airport office in our hometown, which is in New York State. The reservation system wouldn’t accept my coupon. Confused, I contacted the people at the Budget social media office who had given me the coupon. Their first response was that our hometown office must not have cars available for our desired dates. That wasn’t the case. I could have reserved a car just fine without the coupon. I wrote social media again, and another person told me the problem was with the coupon. They said that no Budget offices in New York State accept that particular type of coupon.
I wrote back to express my dismay at the obvious deceit and to ask for a coupon that WOULD work in NYS. They wrote back a form letter, expressing that they understood my frustration, but followed with a long list of the limitations and various conditions attached to the coupon I’d been given, which I already knew. So, I’d been given a virtually worthless coupon as “compensation” for Budget’s failure to honor a reservation and to conduct business ethically! What a hose job!! In response, and smelling a dead and decaying rat, I wrote the following letter to my “contact” at Budget’s social media office:
“Dear Monte,
On the basis of your most recent reply, I've decided you're a very poorly programmed bot! You've told me nothing I didn't already know, and you've done nothing to answer my questions or help me get even modest compensation for Budget's egregious deceit when they failed to have a car for me at JFK when I'd reserved one months in advance. The fact that Budget has now given me a worthless coupon to compensate for their failure to honor our reservation is insulting and proves definitively, I think, that Budget is a broken company lying its way toward bankruptcy it deserves. Fortunately for you, because you're a bot, losing your job won't matter to you. I wonder if your programmers included in your language chip an understanding of the word, Kafkaesque? It's a wonderful word that effectively describes my experience with your company. Look it up, if you're capable of doing that.”
The bottom line here is don’t rent from Budget!!
Original Review: Made a reservation 2 months in advance, but when we showed up mid afternoon at JFK to pickup our car (Sept. 28, 2024) there were no cars available and little likelihood we would get one if we waited. Even though I'm a regular customer with an account and Fast Break status, we were placed 20th on a waiting list. Things got very complicated as we needed to get home, a 5 hour drive from JFK. We took a train into Manhattan trying to catch a bus there but just missed it, so we had to spend a night in an NYC hotel (NOT cheap!!), and catch a bus home the next morning. I've written Budget to complain and hoping for some response, and maybe a future voucher or something, and, of course, no reply!!!! What should have cost $95 plus gas cost us around $500, including train fares and bus tickets!!!!

I am a business owner that sent two employees on two different training trips. First was to Dayton OH 9/30/24. They refused the vehicle because my employee didn't have my credit card on them. When I spoke to the clerk at the desk he wouldn't allow me to verify anything about the card or reservation and expected my employee to wander the Dayton airport asking different rental car agencies if they had available vehicles. He ended up at Hertz and rented a vehicle.
Second time I sent an employee to Dixon IL (flying into Chicago which is about an hour and a half drive), and they refused the vehicle because they stated there was no payment on file. While there WAS payment on file, I was willing to deal with that when I got back the office on Monday (this happened on a Sunday). They then refused to take a payment over the phone. Unless my employee wanted to walk to Dixon he needed a car and ended up having to use his rent money to cover the car. He, of course, will be reimbursed, but when I called customer service to get the cards changed on the account I was told that it was not possible, and he could change payment type when he dropped off the car. My employee does not have a company card, so he is unable to do that.
I'm not sure why the budget employee and supervisor didn't understand this, but I will never recommend them nor use them again. The best part? I called 10/1 and spoke to a Roberto who confirmed everything was all set and my employee just needed his license, and I called back a SECOND TIME and spoke to Anneesha, who gave me the same information. We are all set and my employee is good to go. I made it explicitly clear this was a business trip and I had issues in Dayton the week before and I was assured by both parties everything was all set. I wish I could find how to leave them a Google review because I would make sure this gets blasted out for everyone to see.

We were given an EV because it was "all that was left" and were told by the guy behind the counter that it only takes 15 minutes to charge and can go for 300 miles. It took us 12 hours to get 3.5 hours up the road and we had to stop at sketchy places to charge all throughout the night. Then the 1st full day of our trip we were out of a vehicle because it has to charge for over 8 hours. We had to walk across highways and down roads to find food. Finally after talking to 5+ people we were brought another vehicle and the ev picked up. Now Budget is saying we have to pay a 1,200 dollar tow bill plus full price for rental. Absolutely outrageous. We will never use them again and would tell everyone not to also.

In early October of this year I arranged a car rental with Budget, and was told the price would be $436.78. My credit card was actually billed $748.39. These people are thieves. Unrequested add ons were applied, and at the time of pick up I didn't scrutinize the bill. I could not hear everything the clerk was saying while finalizing the paperwork at pickup, so I suppose he was rambling through these "options" without my having any idea this was going on.
I have complained to Budget, and was told to kick rocks, or words to that effect. I looked at reviews for this rental car company after the fact, and was amazed at the number of complaints lodged against them, many for this same sort of bait and switch pricing. I will NEVER do business with them in the future and would advise you to do the same. They are totally misleading on the prices quoted on their rental sites. Shame on any reputable airlines directing people to use their services (I'm looking directly at you United Airlines). Run, don't walk to almost any other rental car agency if you are considering renting a car from Budget Car Rentals.

We had an absolutely terrible experience with Budget on our recent vacation. We picked up our rental car (Full sized SUV #1) on the first day of our 9-day vacation from the Denver airport location. After driving ~1.5h across Denver we realized the sun roof was stuck open. After connecting our phones to the car, the car's system alerted us that that it had an active safety recall about potential faulty brake lines (see photo below). Since our vacation itinerary involved driving over the Rocky Mountains with our 2 young children in the car, it was unacceptable to us to drive a car that potentially had an issue with its brakes. Not to mention the fact that the perpetually open sunroof became uncomfortable for our kids.
We called Budget customer service and were advised to drive to the nearest Budget location to immediately switch out the car. Despite being told by the telephone agent that “all Budget locations have the same stock,” we went to two different locations before being told that small Budget locations do not normally have full size SUVs and that we’d have to drive back to the airport. The customer service agent at the time offered us 3 days off of our rental to make up for the inconvenience.
When we got back to the airport after driving 1.5h, the line at the counter was so long it was wrapped around the building resulting in an additional 2 hour wait to get the car switched. Again, we have 2 very young children so this was not a simple task. At this point, the desk agent was again apologetic and offered an additional day off of the rental (now 4 days off total).
We got a different car (Full size SUV #2), moved the car seats and the luggage into the new car, and set off. We immediately noted that the car smelled strongly of smoke, but at this point we had lost a day of our vacation and did not want to wait another 2h in line for something that air fresheners could fix. By this time, it was time to check into our accommodations for the night and get dinner for our kids. First day of our vacation lost to Budget safety issues. But we had thought Budget made it right by taking 3 days off for putting us in a broken unsafe car and 1 additional day off for losing the day.
The next day, SUV #2 had trouble starting and a message popped up on the dashboard that said “Charging System Service Soon” (see photo below). A Google search of this message informed us that when others have received this message, the battery died within a few days. As I previously stated, we were about to drive through the Rocky Mountains and did not want to be stranded with our small children far from help. So we again called customer service and again we were told to go to the nearest location to switch cars.
We knew from our previous day's experience that we couldn’t just go to any location, so we asked the telephone agent if they could check their inventory to see if there was a closer location so that we didn’t have to go back to the airport which, was 1 hour away from where we stayed that first night. The telephone agent did not have any information about inventory available at each site, so we had to go back to the airport location again. We drove the 1 hour back to the airport and again waited in line for 2 hours to get the car switched. The desk agent was again very apologetic and offered an additional day off of our stay (now 5 days total).
After everything was switched over to SUV #3 we had lost half of our 2nd day of vacation, but we had SUV #3 that was safe and functional and 5 days off of our rental - or so we thought (in the end Budget would only honor 3 of the 5 days promised). It should be noted that even the last car (Full sized SUV #3) was not without issue. After driving it for a few hours, we got a message on the dashboard that it needed an oil change (0% oil life) as well as a message that the battery in the key fob was about to die.
We were told by the representative on the phone and the agents at the desk each time we were offered an additional day off to call customer service after returning the rental to make sure our refunds were processed correctly. We have called at least 10 times and are being told that they only see records of the first offer of 3 days, but nothing about the 2 additional days that were offered by the desk agents. And since there is no way to actually talk to the people at the Denver airport site (the number routes you to a call center), there seems to be no way that we can get this resolved. One telephone agent said that they would “elevate this issue to be investigated further” but the next agent we spoke to said that there was no such process for elevating issues for investigation.
At the end of the day, we are left extremely frustrated, dissatisfied, and disappointed on several accounts. We are frustrated with the customer service, lack of accountability, and with the absolutely terrible and frankly unsafe cars that they are renting out for folks to use. The fact that they are renting cars with major unresolved factory recalls is unacceptable. And even the more “minor” issues (such as the sunroof being stuck open) are a big deal when you will have that car for over a week with young children in the back. We paid for a functional and safe car for our family to use, and we had to sacrifice 2 days of our vacation to get it. And even then, the car had issues. We will NEVER use Budget again and will advise everyone we know to do the same.
Please learn from our experience that you cannot count on receiving a safe or correctly maintained vehicle from Budget and, if you are promised anything from Budget agents, make sure you can confirm that they document to your account any promises they make (referenced by your driver's license number). We advise anyone renting cars from Budget to connect their cell phone to the vehicle and allow the vehicle to connect to the Internet - from there navigate through the settings menu to look and see if the vehicle has any unresolved safety issues. It can take up to 1.5 hours for the vehicle to alert you to any unresolved safety issues. These are very hard lessons learned that cost us time, money, and misappropriated vacation days that should have been spent with family not as we previously described.

Many hours have been wasted so far - Time that should have been spent with family. It appears that Budget rents junk - In spite of their claims.

We rented a vehicle and 3 hours after having it all power was lost on the vehicle. We were driving on the grapevine and lost power. We coasted off the freeway and called roadside assistance. We were told we could receive an Uber voucher to get a ride to a new vehicle but would have to wait until the following day to get a car. The roadside assistance recommended a hotel to stay at within a mile and said we would be reimbursed. No Ubers would come to the grapevine so we had to pay somebody to come pick us up and drive us to the rental car replacement 2 hours away. We are seeking rental reimbursement, hotel, and ride reimbursement. Budget declined any reimbursement but $50. It was very traumatizing losing power at 5k feet in the fast lane on m a pass. Customer service has definitely been disappointing on this experience. Budget does not care about their customers and their safety.

The key fob on the car I rented from Budget broke (& no valet key), they gave me the option of getting it fixed at my expense or have the car towed. I opted to have it towed. Customer Service told me the contract was closed and I would get a refund in 3-5 days. Several days later I had a $1051 charge on my credit card. That customer service person did not say anything about the car being missing and that she would close the contract, a supervisor would call me & I would get a refund in 3-5 days. (No call from a supervisor). 5 days later I got an email saying the car was missing. The number on the email for loss prevention was not answered, the other number just went to customer service.
I spoke with 13 people before someone transferred me to roadside assistance. He tracked the car to Hook N Go towing. The company they contracted with. The tow company still had the car. It was up to me to call the tow company and get him to return it. It then took Budget 3 days to check it in. All the while I am getting emails saying the car is missing & I am responsible. All in all I spoke with 18 people & the tow company. Finally on 9/27 (this started on 9/12) I got an email saying my contract was closed & I would be refunded all but the one day I had the car. No yesterday I got a certified letter “demanding the return of the car”. I spoke with customer service again, and am sadly a call from a manager in Loss Prevention. Budget offered no help, blamed me for everything, lied to me, gave me conflicting information and now sent me a threatening letter. This is an awful company. Do not even consider renting from them.

My experience with this unreliable company could not have been worse. We rented a car on August 29th at Orlando airport, where we were quoted $417.82 USD. After they forced a bunch of "add-ons" on us, the final bill ended up at $874.83. We couldn’t understand the charges, but the unpleasant lady at the counter said, "We will return $200 to your credit card when you return the car. This is to cover in case there is an issue with the rental." We asked for a receipt and confirmation, but she said it would be sent electronically, which never happened. On the day we returned the car, we asked the agent again if the refund would be processed, and they assured us it would. However, after returning home to Canada, 10 days passed, and we received neither the refund nor the electronic invoice. I managed to open a customer care case, and after eight emails back and forth, they finally confirmed the following:
"Dear **, Thank you for contacting Budget regarding your pending charges. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate the opportunity to respond to your inquiry. Upon careful review of your account, we have determined that the total amount returned for the authorization hold is $200, which was released on 29AUG24 and can take up to ten days to go back to your card. Thank you for your patience and understanding of this process. Kind regards, Kesan Representative | Customer Service Budget Rent A Car System".
However, today, on October 1st, 2024, I called my bank, and they confirmed that no refund has been received. So I called customer service again. This time, they had the audacity to claim that all the charges were valid and that no refund would be issued. When I brought up the email I received from customer care confirming the refund, they completely ignored it and said, "We are not here to discuss this with you. These charges are valid, and the $200 was charged in case of an accident." I pointed out that I had already paid for insurance, but they claimed it was for something different and continued to dismiss the previous communication. They abruptly ended the call and hung up on me. In summary, they not only overcharged me but also lied to me and stole my money without any remorse! Stay away from this company—they are thieves in suits!

We even visited the site and spoke to Noor last week and he promised us that the truck will be available and there will be more than one truck to choose from. When we went to pick up our truck today as per our reservation, this same person Noor tells us that the person who was supposed to return his truck decided to keep it for another week and they have only sedans and small vans available for us.
Whatever the other person decided to do is none of our problem. Our problem is that Noor promised us a truck and that promise was broken and our family trip is ruined. Budget not only ruined our family trip but also lost a customer for life. There are many other companies we can do business with. This is a terrible experience and never to be repeated.

When I returned the car, the gas service option cost was 50% higher than quoted due to other taxes and fees, which weren’t explained at the time of rental. I was shocked at the prices. I have been traveling for over 30 years throughout the United States using Avis/Budget for most of my rental car needs on these trips. Never have I ever paid more than $800 for a weeks rental. I consider this price gouging at it's finest. The cost of the vehicle rental was more than 2 round trip airfare tickets from the East Coast. I told them that the charges will be considerable higher because I was calling the week of my travel. I was asked what my flight number was and that I could pick up my car 2 hours prior to reservation time via Budget policy.
When I arrived at the airport, I was told that there were no cars available except for electric cars. I told them what I was told about the 2 hours prior and was told that the support team didn't know what they were talking about. I was told I will have to wait till 3:00 to pick up my car. 2:30 the counter agent came to me and said that there was a car available to me but it wasn't what I had picked out. Naturally I was tired of waiting so I took the car. I asked the agent why the Midsized car that I had reserved wasn't available and was told that the business at the time first come first serve and hopefully a midsized would be returned.
To add insult and matters worse, I told the agent that I had mine own insurance and that my credit card would insure the car also and did not wish to have any insurance on the car. I even initialed the decline of the insurance. I signed the bill to get out of there but later noticed that I had a charge of $100.00 for as stated "Estimated Non Taxable Products/Services". Well, when I got back home and called about my bill and asked about that "Estimated" charge (which I assumed that it would be refundable per nothing wrong with car I returned) the charge was for their Insurance program. I recently rented a car at Logan Airport in Boston. When the rental agent asked if I wanted the fuel purchase option, I asked what rate did they charge per gallon. Gas in Boston is selling for about $3 per gallon. I was charged $9 per gallon. Deception #1. When she asked if I wanted insurance, I said my car insurance covers me. She asked, "so you want the minimum" and I said yes, assuming we were on the same page. I ended up being charged $175 for insurance that I apparently accepted. Add to this, the 11% concession recovery fee, the customer facility charge, and the extension fee, and what I thought was a $450 rental became $900 when I returned the car.
Whenever I have rented cars in the past there is a printed rental agreement that spells out in writing what the charges are. That apparently is no longer the case, which makes in quite easy for Budget to engage in deceptive practices. The lesson that I learned was to demand to see all the charges upfront before accepting the vehicle. Of course I will do this at some other company, because I will never rent from Budget again.

Budget is taking advantage on its customers. Full coverage only applies to collision insurance and not the other foolish things they sell.
I called and got the run around and they would not even provide me with a bill that itemize all these charges. It only gave this explanation: Optional Services Total: $410.05 which my manager, for I was on company travel, had questions and I could not explain. That raised a 'red flag' but we left since they weren't going to do it. Someone has always checked our vehicle in all the previous car rental returns. We called customer service and they said we had signed a contract stating a refueling service charge was added since we returned it empty. It was our word over theirs even though we had a receipt.
What is SO ironic is that on their site, they post: "Protect yourself from becoming a victim of car rental scams and fraud. I had reserved a car since they had the best rates. I then paid Uber to get me to the rental location only to have my rental declined by credit check on my debit card - which I assure you had more than enough to pay even an extended rental, the deposit, and then some. They said this in the fine print, that they do this. Then they asked, ironically, if I had a credit card to pay for it instead - which is laughable since they just declared this to be unacceptable according to this Equifax check. The agent told me that this happens all the time to people to which I replied, "If so, then you should create something in the process to prevent wasting the customer's time and money." I said that I did not bring another card since I had no intention of charging this and so they said, "Thank you but no car for you," I paid Uber to return home, all in 30 dollars for the displeasure and still no car.
Upset about this, I called their customer service who escalated the incident and she said that I would receive half the amount of the rental amount in compensation that was about the amount of the Uber charges, so I agreed, It dawned upon me that she didn't ask my card number to refund it the amount; so I called this morning only to be told that no, they won't refund the money that I was out since the charges were not made to them. And because I didn't get the car -- which was the very issue of dispute and that it caused me money out of pocket to be refused -- and that the customer service person was wrong. When the van keys were handed over I found it extremely dirty. There were stains on the seats, floor, wall, ceiling and luggage area. There was a very strong smell of urine throughout the va. One of the A/C vents was missing, and one of the seats had a seat belt strap but no seat belt receiver to attach. I pointed this out to the attendant who gave me the keys and he says there is nothing he can do and that was the only van available and it wasn't his job to help me get a different vehicle.
I reluctantly drove to the nearest pharmacy and purchased air freshener to help with the smell (It didn't). Budget charged me $2,286.19 to rent the van from 8/1-8/6. The entire time we had the van, we had to drive with the windows down as the smell was too much, and one person could never buckle in. When the van was returned, the workers screamed at us in regards to where to park the van and told us to get out, leave the keys in it, and walk away even though I was trying to explain the condition of the vehicle. When I told him about the problems he told me that he wasn't the one to tell about this.
Overall, it was a terrible rental experience. To top it all off, now Budget wants to charge me a cleaning fee to clean the disgusting vehicle that they gave me. I made a booking online for a GAS rental from them for the weekend of my son's birthday. This is how that went. Upon picking the car up I was told they COULD NOT give me a GAS vehicle and that they only had electric ones. I stated that I felt uncomfortable in my ability to drive such a car. The person assured me it was exactly like driving a normal car, plus cheaper to operate. He then switched my booking to the electric vehicle.
He then told me my full coverage auto insurance will not cover the electric vehicle and I HAVE to pay the $20 a day insurance in order to get the car. Which after a call to my insurance the next day, I found out is utter nonsense. I walked out to the vehicle and frankly I couldn't even get it started. I went back in almost in tears telling him I really need a different car. He said there's nothing else he could give me. He walked out with me and got it started and showed me a few things. I honestly don't know how I made it home.
Once I got the hang of driving it, came the charging issues. I tried the free chargers at the mall, 5% battery for 2 hours was ridiculous. I tried the fast chargers run by SHELL which dominate my area, their system was down and charged my card $20, 20 times. I'm very lucky to bank with Chase who quickly shut that down on my card and refunded my money within minutes. Once it got to 30% I had to pay for a fast charger, which was $70 and had to sleep in the car while it charged for almost 2 hours. Absolutely miserable. And it only lasted half a day. I went from 100% charge to 30% again in a matter of a few errands. My phone was still at 80% while the car was basically dead again.
Now onto the "safety features" if you can call it that. Several times the wheel pulled itself out of my hands and almost killed us. A lane would split into 2 and I'd keep left, only for it to jerk us to the right, cutting people off. Pedestrians walk in the road in Houston, it happens, you give them some space and go by. The car was having none of that and wanted to stay centered on the lane. So my attempt to go around someone was met with another jerk, if they had not moved I would have hit them.
I called Budget MANY times and they would say "we will have a supervisor call you" and no one every called. To THIS DAY a week later and no one has called. The day of drop off I couldn't get the car to charge. I called once more to ask how to proceed since it had to be returned at 70%. The lady on the phone was WONDERFUL! She listened to me basically cry about the hell mobile and told me that
1.) No, I didn't need the insurance and she will refund it.2.) She will make a note that I don't have to charge it before return.
3.) She will take a day off the rental price for all the trouble.
They originally charged my card $450 for a rental that was supposed to be $150. That's with the insurance and $200 safety deposit. Yesterday the amount charged to my card went from $450 to $230.01, which is more than I expected after the conversation with customer service. So I called again and this new lady told me that they owe me nothing, and they WILL NOT be honoring the promises made by the previous representative.
The reasoning is that since he changed my booking to an electric at the counter, they didn't have to uphold any promises made to me after that point. I asked to speak to a supervisor as I feel I am entitled to the promises made to me by their representatives, and I got a "yeah, I'll have him call you. Have a good day." I beg you. Please do business with literally ANYONE ELSE. Budget will lie to you, change your paperwork, and tell you to screw yourself.

I was given the price of renting a car of $77.07 per day in Long Island Huntington Station with tax and everything on 8/21/24. And the sales guy didn’t explain to me that if I am late for one hour, there will be a total different prorate of $95.58 per day nor it stated in my rental agreement! My rental agreement stated $70.99 prorate per day. And I was 40 minutes late on 8/22/24 because of the traffic in the morning.
After arriving at JFK airport. I received a new invoice from this Budget company to my email stating that I owe them $137.32 just because I was late for 40 minutes with a new prorate of $95.85, almost doubled of my original amount! I called their customer service line to explain to them but they insisted that this prorate of $95.85 is their policy. I told him if your company send me a $200 bill, I still would accept that hidden and ridiculous fee?! And the guy still insisted their policy and can’t refund the difference of $ 60.25 to my credit card. I will never, never use this Budget scam cheating company again.

My family and I flew to South Carolina to visit family. We had already reserved a car for when we got to the airport. Budget told us that the car wasn’t available and the only one available was a full size SUV, which was $200 more to rent for the week. The car I already reserved was for $670. I was traveling with three kids and my mother and needed a vehicle and they gave me no other option, and said I would get a refund. After I got back from vacation, I called budget to ask about the refund and when I would be getting it, and they said I wasn’t getting it because I signed for the car and they proceeded to tell me that I upgraded it. I’m extremely disappointed with the customer service here. Instead of sticking by their word and refunding me, they lied and apparently thought earning the extra buck was more important than helping their customers. I will never use budget rental car again.

I walked out to garage because I am Fastbreak and they said it had to be reserved 48 hours in advance which was fine. Walked back in and finally got to counter. The girl there said I would have to come back in 45 minutes before it came through their system. I asked if they could cancel my reservation and start a new one so I didn't have to come back. She said no just stand over there and I will call you in 45 minutes. Just walked down to Hertz and rented a car from them. Atlanta should upgrade their staff.

My son and I flew to San Francisco from Georgia and rented a car from Budget at SFO to visit the National Parks. We were driving nearly 1000 miles on this trip, ending in Oregon. The car rode really rough from the very start, but we checked the tire pressure on the screen and all the tires were at 40-47, so we assumed over inflation and cheap tires (off brand) were the problem. Made it to our hotel in Mariposa, and before heading into Yosemite we let some of the air out of the tires to soften the ride. While doing that, we noticed that the tires looked worn and not in great condition. I had my son watch the tires while I slowly drove it to make sure they were ok and while doing that discovered that the back driver side tire had a huge chunk out of it, exposing the wires. There was serious wear around the exposed section to the point there was almost no tread, so it had been that way for a while.
I immediately called customer service and they told me I needed to bring the car back so they could exchange it. I explained I was three hours away and there was no way I could do that. The car was completely unsafe to drive. They told me that roadside could come put the spare on and I could drive it back that way. I had to explain to the agent that the spare was a donut tire and you cannot drive that far on a donut. I also explained that drive meant another six hours of driving for us and they were the ones that put us in an unsafe car and needed to make it right by either providing a full size tire replacement or a new vehicle. I also let them know there was no tire iron in the car, so we wouldn't have even been able to change the tire ourselves had we had a blow out.
I was told by the customer service agent that I should’ve checked the tires before we left and should’ve checked to make sure everything was there. She said that it was my fault and that the only thing they could do was send out roadside to put the donut on. I told her that at check-in no one met me at my car and they didn’t give me a walk around form to fill out.
The desk agent only told me the parking spot to find the car and the key was inside. She didn’t even mention checking over the vehicle, much less that I should do a test drive and make sure the tires were good and the vehicle safe to drive. I did a standard walkaround of the vehicle taking pictures of any scrapes or dents, but I'm assuming the bad section of the tire was sitting on the ground since neither my son nor I saw it. I made a reasonable assumption that the vehicle they were renting me that I had paid over $1100 for, would have been inspected to be safe to drive and that any standard equipment such as a tire iron would be in the vehicle.
The customer service agent then transferred me to Roadside who stated that I would have to have the tire replaced and they would give me $200 towards it or they could come put the donut on and I could drive to the closest location in Fresno to change out the car, which is over 80 miles away. I hung up with them and contacted the only local repair shop and some further out, but they were all closed for the night. It’s not safe to drive that far on a donut on the interstate, so we would have to wait until morning and have the tire replaced. This meant missing our entire trip in Yosemite. We had a night hike planned for that night and a morning hike that would take all day planned for the next day. We were leaving the day after that to head up the coast. We were going to miss our entire time at Yosemite because Budget had rented me an unsafe vehicle to drive.
I called back roadside to let them know nothing was open and could not get a full tire until the next day. This time I got Colby on the phone. Colby listened to me and then put me on hold for a long while. He came back and told me that the vehicle would have to be towed to Fresno and a new vehicle brought to me. They had determined the vehicle they had rented me as unsafe for them to drive, but I would have to pay for the towing and it would cost me an additional $600 on top of the $1100 I had already paid for the original rental. He also stated that I could dispute the charges since I was given a faulty vehicle.
Since we are now down to just the one day in Yosemite, I opted to have the replacement car brought to us and the unsafe car towed. This was our only option since we could not change a tire with no tire iron, we could not drive that far on a donut, there were no mechanics open within 60 miles to get a replacement tire, and the car was determined unsafe to drive and needed towed. Yet, I was required to pay for it.
Colby was incredibly helpful and courteous. I feel like he did everything he could to advocate for me, but the options they allowed him to give me were unacceptable. He said he tried and this was only option they gave him for us to be able to continue on our trip without missing another day. The car was rented to me in an unreliable and hazardous condition. It was clearly not inspected for safety before passing it along to the next customer. The fact that they refused themselves to drive it back to Fresno and required me to pay for towing to get it there, tells me the company has no care for its customers. I thank God that we made it to Mariposa safely without the tire blowing out and I hate to imagine what would have happened if we had gone up the mountain and it had blown out then.
We had come thousands of miles for this trip and had already missed our first day plans, it made no sense to miss the next day too due to their error. Budget charged me over $800 nearly a month later for the new car and the tow of the old one, plus a random $170 charge that I have no idea what for, making it over $2000 to rent a car from them. I should not have to pay for an issue created by their lack of maintenance on a car; a car that was dangerous to drive that they rented to me knowing I was going on a very long road trip. The maintenance of the vehicle is the responsibility of the owner, not the renter. Their irresponsibility of maintaining the car and their lack of inspecting it, put me and my son in danger. I should not have to pay extra for them to make right the situation they put us in when renting me a vehicle that was deemed unsafe for even them to drive.

I decided to rent a car when I was stranded at the airport due to a cancelation because of hurricane Debby. I figured that I would have a car out of the airport than back in. When I requested it, the request was for four days. The CS had to have someone else take my request because she didn't know how to do it. So I had to wait till someone was free. Then that CS rep was told repeatedly by me the request was for 4 days. She kept saying 5 days. I thought she fixed that she did not. Then when I got to the car. It didn't start. The steering column was locked.
I had to get someone who was parking a returned car to start it for me. I got to my place I was staying at. Then I got a flight out 3 days into the rental. I called them and they said it was fine to change the location drop off and I could turn it in early. So I go to start the car on the third day and it doesn't work. I called roadside assistance to say the car is dead and I need a ride to the airport. They asked if I was going to stay with the car. It was depending on how long they would take. Since she couldn't give me a time. I said no. I found another ride. Guess what that ride got me to the airport that was an hour and a half away, and back before they picked up the car.
My ride was there when it was picked up. So not only does their customer service have no clue what they are doing neither does the roadside assistance service. I was charged an outrageous amount of money for a car that never delivered the service it was supposed to perform. Getting me to and from the airport. Not only that. I was sleeping after a long day of traveling and I got three phone calls in a row to tell me they received the car late at night. I knew they received the car. Since the roadside assistance picked it up that morning. Don't call someone late at night to say you got the car back. I had the worse experience with them. I have rented cars before from other companies but Avis/Budget/Payless are the worst. Never again.

The frustrating issue was the customer service, we called and let them know of the issue. When we got someone we could understand they told us to take it to any Budget rental spot and they would swap it for us, we went to a different budget, their lot was full of cars and they didn't have any available to swap though the exact cars were parked there. We called the customer service and they kept telling us to take it back out of our way to the airport which is a hassle. The Knoxville in town budget was less than helpful, he said that's what the roadside insurance is for.
When we turned it in after putting in a can of Fix-a-Flat and keep airing it up they have no one at the airport, just signs saying leave the keys in the car and they will take care of it. When we finally got receipt they tried to charge us another day saying we were late by over 12 hrs, it was supposed to be returned by 7 pm and we turned it in at 330 AM that day. We showed the gas receipt and our plane tickets to prove we turned in early. If you rent from these scalpers, take lots of pictures, mileage, gas gauge, pics of turning it in, the time, date, it's ridiculous customer service. Was supposed to be home Sunday night and got to our home airport about 4 pm Monday. She got to Fedex at 5:30 Monday and paid 60$ to overnight the key which did not arrive till 9:30 am Wednesday. Not sure why I was charged an extra 422.63 for a key that was returned asap and delayed through no fault of our own.
I asked the rep to waive the fee and she refused. We could not get to a Fedex till Monday early evening because we were stuck in an airport. I would also like to see a breakdown of what costs 422.63 and no receipt or notice was given, I just saw the additional charge on my card statement. I was not allowed to speak to a supervisor and it was difficult to understand the rep, I have tried multiple times to use the app to share my concerns and type everything in and it would not send because some tech issue (a bad gateway 500) so nothing goes through, was also put in a queue to talk to a supervisor in 24 to 48 hours but no guarantee it will happen. I just do not see the fairness in charging me an additional 422$ on top of the 589$ when we did all we could to get this key back as quickly as possible.

If you choose to rent from Budget, make sure you get some type of receipt when returning the vehicle. I returned a rented van on July 1 and on July 5 I received an email and a certified letter stating that vehicle had not been returned! I immediately called them up and they said they did not have the van and I would get a final bill. I originally paid $1,200 for the rental and honored the contract to the "t". I received final bill and it was for $3,800 AND they had already gone out and hit my credit card for the $2,600 balance! After nearly a month of arguing with them that van was returned on time, they told me that their records indicated van was finally returned on July 9! I kept track of our mileage while we had the van and Budget's records were showing an additional 1,500 miles on the vehicle. I told them obviously they had rented the van to someone else after July 1 and THEY returned it on July 9. I am not paying for someone else's rental!
Again, after 30 days they finally reversed the additional money they took and acknowledged that my van was returned on July 1. I was supposed to receive an Amazon gift card of 10% of the rental cost (this was signed up for when I originally rented the van) but Budget is telling me now that I don't qualify for it! At this point, I am just done with Budget. Good luck to you if you choose to rent from them!

Within a few hours of returning the vehicle, I received the final invoice and was shocked to see that charged us $450 for something called “miscellaneous” charges. I see other reviews here from others who have gone through the same thing. I called them and was informed this was a smoking fee, which is ridiculous and laughable. Not only did we not smoke in the car, but we washed it and vacuumed it out and even sprayed a new car smell in it. When we disputed the charges, they said it smelled like cigarette smoke and sent us their so-called proof consisting of photos of what looked like ashes on the console and the cup holders.
My guess is that most people return cars way more dirty than we did and they are not used to it. Because the car was washed, vacuumed out and smelled nice, I am willing to bet they became suspicious we must be hiding something and decided to play “forensic files” and go over it with a fine-toothed comb. And what do you know, they were able to “find” the evidence to the contrary. This is so obviously fraudulent, deceptive and a scam. Unfortunately, this is a common and disgusting tactic rental companies are using on customers and getting away with it. We are not the first to fall into their trap, and will not be the last.

We arrived on July 23, 2024 to pick up the vehicle (same day, just a few hours late bc of flight delay). As we were providing my license and debit card authorization, the man at the counter told me that I needed an additional credit card for incidentals. I did not have an additional card. No representative told me I’d have to have this for check-in. This put us in a major bind with our itinerary and made us miss an important dinner reservation. A friend of mine offered his credit card for the incidentals, but the MIA Budget worker would not accept his “because it was not the same number on the license or debit card originally charged for the reservation.”
I was told I would need to get on the phone with the toll-free number and have the reservation put in someone else’s name. This upset me because both the MIA airport worker and the toll-free representative, in my opinion, should have been working to resolve this matter together. Instead, I was the middle man trying to jump through hoops to ensure a vehicle for that evening. I ended up having to cancel the reservation and have a friend start a new reservation.
Please bear with me because this story gets considerably worse. My friend who, so kindly, was willing to offer his information to get a new reservation, booked a 7-passenger vehicle over the phone because the reservation that we already had was now gone in a matter of minutes. The guy at the counter said he’d swap the vehicle for an 8 passenger downstairs. As we go downstairs to our SECOND rented car, there is a family in OUR rental car–driving away in it. We speak to the family and both sets of paperwork have the same car number on them. We have to go back upstairs to resolve an issue AGAIN. The MIA airport worker says there are no other 8 passenger vehicles. The SAME MIA worker at the counter tells us that “ we should have made a reservation” , when we indeed have made TWO reservations at this point.
We did end up searching ourselves through the parking deck and finding a Ford Expedition. We call upstairs and tell the MIA Budget worker that we have found a vehicle and please reserve the one we found in the parking deck. This experience was hurtful, frustrating, unorganized, and the worst customer service we’ve ever seen. I have never been treated so poorly. We tried to handle the matter in a non-confrontational way. We did not even use expletives. I feel as though we were taken advantage of and any other person in this situation would be irate. I hope that this will be shared with the supervisor of Budget, Cooperate, managers, and anyone connected with the MIA Budget Rental Center. This experience should never have to happen to people. We felt hopeless and inconvenienced in the worst of ways. I will never again book with this company.

The agent who processed my rental had to leave his window for a few minutes and then handed the key fob to me that I later realized was broken. The car was parked the furthest away in a dark area. It was a filthy disgrace with windows caked with dried on dirt. Leaving the airport there was a deluge of rain that smeared them making it difficult to see. When we arrived home we discovered a small dent in the lower passenger side that was marked off with white x's indicating it's size and shape. The damage was obscured by the dirty car. It didn't end there as I received an email that I owed tolls. The agent "forgot" to activate the sunpass forcing us to go to a local airport because it couldn't be done on-line.
We had to stay in Florida, and called Budget to find out the cost of a closer dropoff - $310. I never had a problem with a car rental but this time it was a deliberate attempt to ruin our trip, placed us in a dangerous position due to dirty windows and giving us a dented car obscured by dirt set us up for blame. Budget has a responsibility to rent cars that are safe, not damaged and to properly train employees to not place customers in harm's way. My experience was bad from beginning to end. I was asked for the payment I stated I had a digital card (in my Apple wallet) in which I use to book rentals. The associate Marvin stated that I could not use it. I was confused because this information is not in the contract. (I read policies for work and it’s not there). I even asked what if I show them my card and give my numbers. They stated they had no way to type it in.
I then asked what if I had a physical card and my strip didn’t work, Marvin stated that I would not be able to use the card and I would have to pay with a debit card with the deposit. I specifically use the credit card I had for a rental and my debit card for our vacation expenses in which I call cash. MARVIN WAS NO HELP AT ALL. I explained that there was nowhere in the policy that you could not use Apple Pay/digital cards and is really strange in a now progressive digital world. Even debit cards are digital. He kept ignoring my question telling me to sign. I was asking what am I signing and how much was the deposit. He state when I sign he can tell me.
I then saw that in the contract they were charging for an extra driver however when booking Costco travel extra driver is free. Marvin states he did not see any of that so I had to tell him to look at the reservation which doesn't seem like he done so. I asked for a supervisor, he retrieved Tamy. Tammy also did not offer any other option except to use my debit card which would have depleted my cash that I had taken to spend with my family on our vacation. She said there was nothing she can do or help me with. I ended up placing my debit card because no other option was given. I spoke with Sebastian from corporate (that’s where he said he was from) and he asked if they gave me the option to pay online. They did not and I actually thought about that. They were rushing me and not trying to come up with a solution.
The customer service and problem-solving skills were horrible and the lack of empathy was diabolical. I have been back and forth with emails from a auto email. No one from the store nor corporate ever reached out to discuss this matter. Even Sebastian stated that the information is listed in the policy. I have been emailing and I keep getting generic emails back. No one tried to smooth the situation over and I was left with no cash only a digital cc with less money to enjoy my vacation because between the amount for the rental and the deposit I could not afford things that I had to pay cash for.
This caused me so much stress and anxiety for my 5-day trip to Myrtle Beach with my family. I was in shambles and was not able to enjoy myself all because of a poorly written contract and horrible customer service. I of all people understand that there are rules and contracts but when you have a contract/policy like Budget that omit payment information how can you enforce something that is not in the paperwork.
If I would have seen it (had it been written) in the contract I would have known to grab another card. The staff could not even show me where it was in the contract only that it was there… until I forced then they threw a section out to me that’s it’s listed. I read the area and stated, "It does not say that. It say that debit cards would be charged a deposit and no prepaid cards." I waited for days for this to be resolved and there is no resolution. They do not call back. The staff is untrained, corporate does not respond, and their policy is not accurate and they do not stand by their mistakes.

Worst rental experience of my life. Car smelled like cigarette smoke and it was obvious they tried to cover up the smell. There was even a cigarette ash burn in the driver's seat. I tried to tell myself it was OK. But after a few days I couldn't take it anymore. My family and I were on vacation to Glacier National Park. After enjoying beautiful hikes in the fresh air, we had to get back into the ashtray to return to our lodging. So I put in a ticket and arranged and exchange at a different Budget location. Of course I was charged a "one-way" service fee, I was charged for fuel service. Now I'm on the phone waiting to try and get this all sorted out. Wish I had just paid a little more to rent from Hertz or Enterprise.

I would simply like to warn anyone looking to rent from Budget of the fees they charge if you cancel and if you want to make changes like pick up and drop off to a different location. I originally wanted to pick up and drop off a vehicle from a different Budget location because the other location closed at a later time. Well, they wanted $125 to make that change, so I didn't change my reservation. Well today I canceled my reservation today because our plans changed. It's 1 week prior to when I should've picked up the vehicle, they charged me $50 to cancel, well in advance. I don't know what happened to Budget but I will never use them again.

Just want to put this out there for anyone thinking of renting from Budget - just don’t. Last week we rented from Budget because they had the availability of a 12 passenger van. I had reserved the vehicle, already uploaded a credit card and driver info, and yet still the process was 2 hours once we were at their counter. After the wait, once we finally got our vehicle it was dented, had spilled paint, and only 3/4 tank of gas. We reported it and were told to take pictures and make sure to show them when we returned the vehicle, so we did.
At this point, we were ready to get started on our trip, so we left Denver and headed on our way. The next morning, we noticed the van already needed more gas. We filled it up and went about our day, but that night it needed more gas again. At this point, Thomas mentioned smelling a gas smell, but it was dark and late, and we were close to our hotel so we didn’t put a lot of thought into it.
Fast forward to the next afternoon. We are filling up with gas again - this time in the daylight - and noticed gas spilling out of the tank. We quickly move the van away from the pumps and start investigating. This is when we notice that in addition to the other issues, the van also had a tank that had been patched poorly. We were many hours away from Denver and two hours away from our hotel for the night, so my dad started driving as Travis and I got on separate phones both calling Budget. We called for two hours. We were told there was nothing they could do. We were told to take it to a mechanic ourselves. We were told many things.
After much pushing, we finally got in touch with someone at roadside assistance who put a lot of time into helping us. He was able to locate an available vehicle 8 hours away. He said the tow company would get that one, bring it to us, and then take the one with issues back to Budget. Great. Problem solved. Only hours later I get a call saying the tow company was going to take the vehicle we had rented and then would bring us another. This would have been over a 20 hour process for a vehicle we had already paid for. And this would have meant we were in an unknown town with no transportation. What would happen if we really needed something? If one of the kids needed something.
We spent a lot of that night on the phone again arguing with the towing company. Finally, the only resolution we could come to was that we would drive the gas leaking vehicle five hours to Cody, Wyoming. The next morning we got up and made the trip to Cody. Thank goodness the tow truck driver followed through and he brought us the replacement vehicle as promised. At this point, we were frustrated with Budget and mad at the extra money we spent on gas and time lost during our vacation arguing, but issue was fixed and we were ready to enjoy the rest of our trip.
Fast forward to the day we left to come home. We fill up the van with gas and return it. I directly ask the attendant if there was anything additional that needed to be done. He said no. We were good. They had the keys and the vehicle and we could head on to the airport, so we did. While sitting there, we get a receipt saying Budget has charged us for an additional tank of gas enough though we were only given 3/4 to start with and we filled up within 5 miles of their site before returning as directed. So we called them again argue.
Just when I think all of this is settling down, today we get an email that Budget is charging us $250 to clean their van. We had “excessive” spills, which we did not. We aren’t sure which van they are referring to - the first one that had spilt paint in it when they gave it to us (and that we told them about and have pictures of) or the second that had stained seats but we couldn’t tell anyone about because it was delivered by a tow truck. All this has yet to be resolved and I’m still arguing with Budget to get our extra gas money back and the cleaning fee taken off in addition to compensating us for putting us in an unsafe vehicle. The amount of emails and calls I’ve made to them are quite ridiculous..

Budget is no better or worse than other rental car companies for everyday ICE rentals.... BUT for Electric Rental Cars they are HORRENDOUS!... because:
2. The scarce printed "Owners Supplemental Instructions" (if provided) may or may not offer ANY information regarding the recharging process. Our MachE had NO written information regarding the charging process. And NO information regarding accessing the "Owners Manual" embedded in the car's electronic display.
3. NO equipment is provided that would allow overnight charging at your destination.
4. You will need to download a separate phone App for EACH pay charging Service (EVgo, CargePoint, Electrify America, etc.). Each will have specific (arguably ludicrous) charging procedure quirks.
So..... Unless your are a seasoned owner of the specific EV Brand/Model you are renting, You can expect to spend many frustrating hours downloading Apps, finding a suitable charger, and struggling to actually charge Your EV. I will say that the Mustang MachE is a very nice car. If I could charge it, it would be very Enjoyable indeed.

After renting a car from them, I returned it in the exact same condition as when I picked it up. I even took pictures of the car and had their employee verify the damage at the time of pick up and return. However, to my shock, Budget fraudulently attempted to make an accident claim against my car insurance for those pre-existing damages! This is nothing short of an unethical and dishonest practice. It’s clear that they are trying to exploit their customers by blaming them for damages that were already there.
I strongly advise anyone considering Budget Rental Car to think twice. This experience has not only been a hassle but also an eye-opener to the potential fraudulent activities they are willing to engage in. Such behavior is unacceptable, and I urge others to be cautious and consider other rental companies with better integrity and customer service. Overall, on all counts, Budget service and representatives were not helpful. The company has safety issues and their staff does not document and prepare cars as thoroughly as they should. After I personally called numerous Budget stores to find a car that I could drive safely, there were no cars available. I was not compensated for the loss of time on my vacation due to their car issues. I was not compensated for paying for weekly rental and only having a safe for car for 3 days. We needed 7 passengers capacity, so we agreed. She talked fast and did not at all describe the charges that we were asked to agree to. As far as my husband knew, they were charging the amount that we had agreed to for a minivan.
As a result of all the things she added, the final price was nearly double what we had confirmed with expedia. When saw the e-receipt that evening when I was checking email (no paper receipt was offered at the desk,) I called about the unexpected charges, the customer service rep was rude and tried to put me off, saying that we had signed the agreement and it was legally binding. They did reimburse the charges except for the roadside assistance so far. I think they bank on people trying to rush through a process that they don't often do and they create confusion around a bait and switch game. To make matters worse, they didn't offer an immediate refund and told us to call customer service the next day. We ended up spending an additional $100 to book a ride to our destination at midnight. This experience was infuriating, disappointing, and extremely stressful. I will never use Budget again and strongly advise others to avoid them as well.

Budget's policies were very unclear and deceptive. On their website, my reservation showed free cancelation but when I went to cancel it because of a change in travel plans, Budget charged me $50 only because I prepaid. Budget customer service (haha....) told me that if I had not prepaid, I would not have been charged $50 and when I asked to speak to someone who had the authority to waive the fee, I was told there was no one in the entire organization who could waive the fraudulent cancelation fee.

I got my rental (12-person cargo van) and went home to pack. I realized when I was cleaning the dirty rental vehicle out, the registration was past due. The sticker on the plate and the proof of registration was past due. I called Budget right away. With their pass-the-buck policies, I got no help. They told me that I need to call the location of pickup. They were close already. Day one of my trip put off till the next day. The next morning, when they opened at 9 am, I called the pickup location and they said that all they could do was have me drive to the airport, which is 45 minutes away, to exchange it for a different vehicle. If not then I had to wait till Monday to get the proper registration information.
I then called Budget legal department about my vehicle not being registered. The legal Budget representative told me that all I could do was drive the unregistered vehicle in to the airport, 45 minutes away to get another one. I decided that was the only way I was going to get back getting my trip started, was by driving my unregistered vehicle 45 minutes to the airport for another.
I got to the airport and was given a very worn-out replacement vehicle. I drove it out and decided to pull over to verify registration. Lo and behold, the proof of registration was 3 years past due. I called roadside assistance, and they called the Budget airport location. The airport location manager said that they could not prove registration on the vehicle till Monday because it was the weekend. He also said that it did not matter because it was a rental vehicle. I stated that the rental company has to be able to prove to me that the vehicle is legal for drive on public streets at the time of pickup. He then said that all I could do was drive that vehicle back for another. So I drove the 2nd unregistered vehicle back to Budget.
When I got back to the airport, they ask me to go look a a vehicle that only had 8 seats, and to verify proof in the glove box. I went to that spot and lo and behold, no proof of registration. I went back to the Budget counter amd told him again of the same problem. She gave the manager a call again to verify another vehicle. I then received the 4th vehicle with proper proof of registration.

It is a shame I can't give zero stars. I had rented a car under the impression it was free cancellation. It said it all over while I was booking. I called to cancel the reservation a day after booking it as my plans had changed. I was charged a 50 dollar fee because they put it in the fine print at the bottom of the website as you are booking. Terrible customer service and experience and I will go out of my way to not rent cars from them in the future and I travel quite frequently. I will also go out of my way to make sure friends and family know about this experience as well.

Horrible experience. Kids are running the entire set up. Jayson the manager was completely disrespectful, and the desk at the airport was rude and very impolite. No professionalism whatsoever. They say and do anything they like, as if they were speaking to someone on the streets. I had booked my reservation weeks ago and went to get my car after I picked up my luggage.
I was stated my car was in space 05, there was no vehicle in 05. No one seemed to care. When you go downstairs to pick up your car they all hide in the office behind the glass. I went back upstairs to get a different car. The car was where it was supposed to be, but it was dirty. I had to go upstairs again and this time I was told that all they had for luxury cars were a Suburban, and an electric Genesis, when I told the desk help (dread locks and black framed glasses, who wouldn’t give me his name and was extremely rude) to cancel the entire thing and I’d go to another rental place, he had an attitude with me. I was finally able to rent a car, way less money and slow but respectful service.
Do yourself a favor and skip Budget and Avis since they work together. Plus, nobody wears a name tag. They wear red shirts with Budget and Avis on it. It is seriously a hot mess. I hope the eleven board members read this along with general council! To top everything off, I have a medical condition that doesn’t allow me to experience heat nor standing too long. Nobody tried to do anything to help. You will walk around the downstairs hot parking lot lost, and even though there are workers walking around they couldn’t care less. The only reason why I didn't give the rating a zero is because a 1 was as low as I could go. After waiting in line get to the counter and for some reason the clerk couldn't figure out how to order my car. He had my license. Another guy helped him and after 45 minutes I was given a ticket to go get the car. I get outside, get to the gate and the gate guard was asking me several questions and told me to meet him inside.
After several more minutes (at least 45) he finally showed up and said he would try to match what the other company ALAMO. Quoted me. I cancelled my previous reservation because I had traveled all day and was too tired to go anywhere else. Allegedly I made my reservation at another company. After several more minutes with my license and credit card, he told me that they weren't going to honor their prices even though we're talking about BUDGET rental. He told me I'd have to pay $550 for a two day rental. Which was $345 more than ALAMO.
I thought it was odd that they hadn't charged me and I just assumed I would be charged at the gate. But how do you take someone's i.d. confirm that you found the reservation and give them keys and a ticket to a vehicle? Needless to say, I was at Budget rental car longer than my flight, and it was delayed. Yes, it's 12:40 a.m. and I am just getting settled. I had to pay $70 for a LYFT because I was too tired to fight.

I have been a satisfied customer of Budget Car Rental for over 6 years. I have rented multiple cars per year from Budget at the Santa Maria Airport location. There are several reasons why Budget is my top choice for Car Rentals. One being, Budget usually has the best rates. The other car rental companies usually have higher rates for the same cars.. Also, Budget's fleet of cars are in good condition. As a female, one of the most important factors to me is reliability. I want to feel safe and assured I will reach my destination without my car breaking down. I love driving worry free when I rent from Budget. I have never had any issue regarding missing a flight due to a mechanical issue using Budget.
Also, they rent me clean cars, too. Lydia is my kind and professional rental agent at the SM airport location. I can't say enough good things about her. She is on top of her job and I've always had a smooth and hassle free experience renting from Lydia. She has gone above her job description by giving me the best customer service available. Easy drop-in drop-off experiences are appreciated. I am a happy customer of Budget Rental Car and will continue to use them as my top choice for car rentals.

We were charged $130 to refuel the car. We used less than a half tank of gas in a small SUV. So by Budget's math to fill the SUV it would have cost over $300. I know the gas price is inflated but a tank of gas for that vehicle would have cost $60 at best. Absolutely ridiculous! I feel like this was done because I had discount codes and they wanted to recoup their cost. My friend used Hertz for their rental and had their SUV for 2 days longer, didn't fill the car all the way up and it was cheaper than my rental.

I stated that I was not asked about an upgrade, nor did I agree to one or want one. I was informed I’d have to call back in 1-2 days for a refund because the case wasn’t closed yet. I called back today and was informed I hadn’t been charged for an upgrade but for the fuel I did not replace. $97 to be exact. I told them I did fill up the car, I have emailed a receipt as proof. I asked if there were any SUVs available and at first there were none but then one was found supposedly. I agreed to accept it and when I arrived to pick it up I was using my debit card for the rental and I was then told that a credit check was needed since I was using debit card.
I did not pass the credit check and was told I had to use a credit card, I did not have enough on my credit card to cover the charge and it would take at least a day to move the money to my credit card. I told the person working at the counter that I would have to cancel the reservation and was handed a pamphlet and told I would need to call the number on the bottom to cancel. This entire situation has been horrible, I went back to check and no were during reserving does it say credit check needed for debit card. I had to call myself to an overseas call center to get my reservation cancelled, how it that customer service.
I had to take an Uber to this place, which I am not being reimbursed for and I didn't even receive an apology for not even having the correct vehicle and the worst thing of all is that I have to wait for the money to go back into my account. My current vehicle is at the mechanic and that was why I needed a rental, but now I have no vehicle, no money that I paid to rent the vehicle and I am hoping that there isn't an emergency and need to be somewhere. My rental was actually out of Budget @ Denver Airport. We arrived in Denver around 7:05 PM expecting to pickup a rental car from a reservation previously made (weeks ago) and then be on our way. We arrived at the rental car counter about 7:30ish & waited inline for over an Hour all to be told once we made it up to the counter that they had overbooked and that they were fresh out of cars, we had reserved a Camry. All we had as far as options were an E-car or a minivan. We settled for the minivan as we were already very late to meet the rest of our party and we still had a couple of hours drive to get to our destination. We get to the parking lot where this minivan was supposed to be waiting and the spot was empty, no minivan in sight...but lots of other cars sitting around...We go back in at this point very frustrated and the young man was very stressed as well as they were clearly understaffed...
We stated that there was no minivan, but several other vehicles out there....He tells us to just go pick whatever we liked and wanted as long as it had a full tank and we won't be charged anything different...*NOTE* we noticed several other couples walking around the parking lot as well because their car was not anywhere to be found or readily available either...so things were getting really weird at this point...so this is what we did, we chose another vehicle, whatever had a full tank of gas but it was truly a recent return because it was so filthy dirty on the outside.
At this point we didn't care as it was after 9 PM and we still had a couple hour drive ahead of us to check into our Hotel and meet the rest of our group. Needless to say it all worked out in the end but proved to be a very long, frustrating, stressful day. Now maybe this was just an isolated event, maybe it was just a Denver thing and not anywhere else...I feel like I have rented from Budget before and not had any issues elsewhere in the Country, but I don't know for sure...I do know this though, this occurrence has definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for Budget Car rental and going forward I would rather pay a little more with another Company than run the risk of another experience like this again.

Overcharged and RIPPED off. We rented a car from 3/13/24 to 3/27/24 (2 weeks) from Budget at LaGuardia Airport in New York and returned the car to the same airport. We stayed in a house in Brookhaven for the entire visit. We only drove 201 miles during the entire 2 week period. The round trip to Brookhaven to see the grandkids and back to the airport accounted for 80+ miles of the 201 total miles driven.
We are two seniors (70+) and did not have any other passengers in the car. It was winter and it rained off and on throughout this trip. Weeks after we returned the car, we received a charge of $250 for "excessive soilage" on our Costco credit card. As proof, Budget produced four fuzzy pictures of the dash, front floor mats and the backseat. The pictures did not look like anything to me. A shake out and light vacuum is all the mats needed. There were no spills or body damage to the car. I guess Budget was very upset they were forced to vacuum the front mats instead of renting the car out immediately without any cleanup.
We NEVER even used the back seat. The car was not that clean when we got it (trash in trunk and car mats did not look vacuumed) but it was winter and we thought this was the norm in NY and didn't complain (we're from California). We never drove this car off road and never to the beach. We drove for shopping and dining only.
We disputed the $250.00 charge and Budget denied our credit card appeal! There was no Budget personnel to show us the car when we picked it up and there was no Budget personnel when we dropped it off. We were told to leave the keys in the car and leave! After many years of choosing Budget over other car rental companies for our vacations, this experience has really left a bad impression on this company.

The lady clearly lied to us since they did not have any cars available. Went to Budget and Sidney ** was most helpful. We couldn't be happier with his service. Smooth check-in, quick and efficient. I wish I could give zero stars. I have rented cars from other rental companies and never had this problem. I rented a car from Budget weeks in advance. I called to double check everything was ready and what the deposit would be. I have a 620 credit score which is not high but not terrible either. When I went to pick up the car they told me they didn't take my credit card. (Chime) I said ok and transferred all the money I needed to my of Debit card (a different bank). They then ran the deposit as a debit which is fine. But then told me I could not rent the car anymore because I didn't pass the credit check for debit. How can they run a credit check on my debit card? I asked how high the credit score needed to be and the woman working said she had no idea.
We had to cancel a trip that we had planned for months because we could not get another large car for that weekend somewhere else because they were all sold out. They never once said they didn't take my credit card or that they would have to do a credit check if I used a debit card when I booked or called in. When my husband called a few days later they hung up on him 2x. Never going to try to book with them again...

Renting a full size car or luxury after the covid is unbelievable. Full size downgraded to a Nissan Altima and a Luxury car. Now a Chrysler 300? What a joke on the renters. Also I've rented several vehicles this past year. Each one of them was filthy dirty... Bird droppings on them, dusty and dirty inside and out. I had to stop at a wash, wipe down and clean them after pick up. So sad it's about money and not the customer nowadays.

Booked our Budget rental car through the Sun Country Airlines site for MSP to PHX round trip. Paid the airfare AND the $600+ car rental fee at that time. Arrived at the rental area at our stated time, waited 45 minutes to get to the checkin counter where we were told we needed to pay another $600+ in rental and fees charge!!! Then got in a second line and waited another 2 hours to get a car. After the trip we contacted Sun Country and were told we should have been charged only the initial $600 and probably some taxes when we got to PHX. Budget conversations have not rectified this situation, so we won’t be using them again.

Don't trust them. I've used for years, but no more. Rented out of Columbus, Ohio airport. Returned it to their ridiculously fast express drop-off. A month later, reviewing expenses, I realized they charged $350 over because there was a bottle of Febreze left in the car, due to fast drop-off, and someone decided that meant smoking in the car (?). The reality was that the luggage area had a smell like bad milk when the car warmed up after pickup. At a month later and 2000 miles away, they got me. The previous rental from Columbus, Ohio Budget gave us a car with expired tags. We were there for a funeral and got stopped by the police. They did exchange the car, but we lost two days of use. Fun times!

Flew from KC to St. Petersburg, FL. in mid-March. Rented a car at the St. Pete airport. We were given a sizable SUV, but we needed a van to assist to complete a move. Still, it was a nice car, and we took it. We came back the next day mid-day to try and switch the car out to get a van or a larger truck. We ran into Rafael after he had left the terminal en route back to the dispatch yard. He asked right away if anything was wrong. We explained what we needed and why, that we wanted to switch the car out for a van. He brought us over to the dispatch yard, and switched cars with us. He made it that easy for us. The worst! Do not rent from them. Go read the reviews. Here’s our story: I’m grandma and was taking my young grandchildren to other grandma's memorial. May 3rd went to pick up car (had scheduled my pick up time for 6am). They apparently don’t open until 8 even though the offered pick up times are 0000-2400. When we able to get our car I was offered an upgrade to a hybrid for $15 a day. I took it thinking of the gas savings.
We left Eugene at 9am and made it to Salem about 10 am. Where the car on I5 told me I needed to pull off the road because the car was going to shut off. I lost all power and was cruising at 10mph on the interstate with no safe place to pull over. I made it to the next exit without dying on the interstate but the pull off was another highway. I limped the car to the first road I saw and got off the highway into an empty parking lot. At this point the kids had to use the bathroom and couldn’t hold it to take a walk down the road to any open businesses. I had my baby girl peeing on the side of a highway with cars driving by. At this point if Budget we should actually be in Washington had Budget been open the hours they had posted.
I called their number three times before I got the right people. They don’t help just transfer and put you into the same automated system so you just take another guess as to what number option to choose. My anxiety was through the roof after the interstate fiasco and people honking and flying around us. They actually threatened to hang up on me because they said I would need to call 911 because of their lack of caring about the welfare of the family in my car. The new rental was not a hybrid or an upgrade in anyway. I was told to call customer service after we return the car.
On May 7th I called customer care and explained the situation. Customer care did not listen at all when I explained the situation and would “repeat” what I was saying in a way that turned it into a me problem. I asked for the $15 dollar a day upgrade as I only drove the car for an hour and a half. That would be a total of $45 refunded. We went in circles for quite awhile and I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was informed they don’t have supervisors there and they’d have to put me in a queue and I would get a call back in 24-48 hours. I explained that doesn’t work for me as I don’t answer my phone unless I know who’s calling. I would like to speak to a supervisor. Long story short I refused to hang up until I talked to supervisor and they hung up after telling I’d get a call in 24-48 hours.
They never called. I called again Monday morning May 13 and was put into the same queue and another 24-48 hours. Still no call. Go to Enterprise for your rentals. I personally called them and they also will send you to a queue but with Enterprise when you are sent to the queue you will talk to the next available supervisor and they do care about the issues that arise during your trip and want to fix the problem. You’re welcome.
Also I have this review saved because I’m posting it on every review page for Budget because I don’t want other people to have the same awful experience. My course of action is talking to my attorney today to file a claim for at least the $45. So now Budget will be paying my lawyer fees and court costs per what my guy said.

We had about the worst experience you can have with a rental car company using Budget at JFK airport. I had recently signed up for Fast Break, so I could bypass the extremely long lines I experienced at LaGuardia a month before. We received emails and texts stating that we were Fast Break customers. So we show up at Budget at JFK, and there are the usual 10+ customers in line and two agents. But we get in the Fast Break line where there is only one person ahead of us. That still takes a half hour.
We finally get to the front of the line and the agent looks up our reservation and says that it was not a Fast Break reservation and that we would have to go to the now even longer general line. I speak to the other agent, who says she's a "manager" and she is as belligerent as can be and explains how I could have added Fast Break while in line because it's free, and they can't just move people to Fast Break. I explain that I joined Fast Break a month or more ago. She doesn't care. By this time, the people who have waited an hour on the general line let everyone know that "Budget has no cars ready to rent." We are livid, and the line is probably 2+ hours long by then.
I go across the street, and walk into Hertz. In FIVE MINUTES, I have a rental of a brand new car with under 200 miles on it, and a contract that is about $15 higher for the 4-day rental than Budget would have been. The contrast between the friendly staff and immediate help at Hertz and the nasty, slow moving staff at Budget was night and day. I will never, ever consider using Budget again, but guess who has a loyal customer going forward?

When picking up the car at the Orlando airport (MCO) on 5/10/2024, I was told only electric cars were available after waiting for 3 hours in line at 2am. I was told the car could be switched anytime at any Budget rental store. The next day on 5/11, I stopped at Budget Deland store and was told nothing but was available; they sent me to the Sanford Airport store, claiming the airport store has plenty of inventory. After driving for 40 minutes to the Sanford Airport Budget store, I was told only electric cars were available.
At every Budget store I went to, the staff were rude and had no sense of professional service and courtesy. I ended up wasting 4 hours trying to switch to a gas car, but had to drive the same cheap electric car all the way to New York from central Florida. Even after having suffered 7 times from looking for an EV charging station and waiting long hours for charging to finish on the way to New York, I still fully charged the car right before returning it to the Budget store at Poughkeepsie, NY, because I am a responsible person. As a service provider, have you fulfilled your responsibilities, Budget? Do you feel ashamed of your poor service and inventory management? Don’t you think I deserve a refund?

I had called the Budget car rental and got everything figured out and made sure they knew I wasn't 25. I know many car places want you to be 25 to rent a car but the individual I spoke with assured all I had to do was pay a larger deposit. I flew out at 6 am and had everything in line, so I thought. Once I showed up during my "appointment time" and handed the lady all my IDs and card I was using to rent the car she told me I could not receive a car since I am not 25 nor did I have a major credit card.
I explained that I already went through this process with somebody who told me I would be allowed to, and she apologized and said she could do it. I was stuck in Cleveland, Ohio with no way to get to my family over an hour away. I know many car places are this way, but I just couldn't believe I wasn't able to rent a car after everything I went through and double-checked. It was a very frustrating situation with everything else going on as well.

Do not rent from Budget. The incompetence and inanity are astounding. 1] I rented a car for 2 days from the small office in Ridgecrest for noon. The office closes at noon. This is not indicated on the confirmation email and the office could not be bothered to text me that I needed to get there before noon. I got there at 12:10. Result: no car. I'm stuck in Ridgecrest for the day because no other cars are available. Budget wanted to charge a $150 cancellation fee for a car that I wanted but couldn't get?!? So 2} I try to make a reservation online for the next day for 1 day. I am unable to do this because their site kept erasing my DL # and the telling me the # was not "present." 3 phone calls and 1 and a half hours later I finally get somebody at the Budget 800 # to reserve a car at the same rate as the online rate. But wait, there's more It turns out 3} that the 2 online reservations I had tried to make did go through even though there was no indication that this had happened.
There were 3 charges on my credit card. So 4} I try to cancel the 2 excess reservations, but have difficulty doing so because Budget won't let me access my account. Another hour wasted before Alex at Budget finally manages to cancel the 2 excess reservations. Mistakes happen, but what kind of website makes a reservation for a time when the office is closed??? What kind of site arbitrarily erases info but then makes the reservation anyway???? What kind of site arbitrarily blocks one's account??? What kind of site makes the exact same reservation 3 times and charges you 3 times???? STAY AWAY FROM BUDGET unless you like wasting time and not getting what you need anyway.

We planned a trip for our daughter's 16th birthday. Our car isn't fuel efficient and needed tires. After a few quick online searches and running numbers through the calculator, we found what seemed like an affordable option through Budget Car Rental. I used their website and created an account for the extra discount. Booking was fairly easy and confirmation came right away. Yay! Not so fast... Get to my local Budget office where I designated the car to be picked up, at the scheduled time, only to have the person working there tell me they have no cars available. I had to ask again... wait the site took my money and I have the confirmation to be here, but no car! They explained it happens a lot. They are an independent business so have no control of Budget. They told me to use my confirmation number at the airport in our area, which is 30 miles away.
I called customer service and explained my frustration. Of course they offer to refund my transaction, only problem there of course is it takes 3-5 business days for them to refund it! We're on a pretty tight budget (who isn't), so that really puts our trip in a bind financially. They other offer was to give us a big discount for our trouble. I accepted the discount.
My wife drive me the 30 miles to our local airport. As she dropped me off I thought our troubles were over and we'd be on our way soon. This is when I'm informed that the deposit could not be paid using a debit/Visa card and that it had to be an actual major credit card. We haven't had a major credit card since COVID killed my wife's business. Again comes the offer to refund me and I get to wait 3-5 business days (this is Saturday, so the clock on that doesn't even start until Monday)! Or if I have a friend or family member that has a credit card I can do that.
I spend the next 30 minutes calling/annoying my friends and family. I actually find one willing to help as I go back to the counter with the phone in my hand expecting now to have the situation resolved. That's when I get the rest of the explanation that the person has to physically come, we have to start a whole new contract and then add me as an additional driver!
Not only should all of this be very clearly and largely listed when you're checking out and Budget is happily taking money from your account, the employees should be clearly explaining all this from the beginning! And if you're going to have problems and want to refund someone have a cash drawer so customers don't have to wait! I could go on and on with all the ways this experience could have been better! Bottom line, the were very quick to take my money, but not really that concerned if I actually get the product I've paid for! Bad Form Budget!!!

I promise you don’t want to miss this review. It could save you a lot of stress and money. I'll preface this with the fact that I’m an airline pilot and rent cars regularly, utilizing my benefits for this specific booking as well. I was in Fort Lauderdale, FL for a week and decided to rent Budget's “sporty” car, noting that with my benefits I was eligible for a free upgrade. I was not given a free upgrade when picking up the car. Secondly, after a long wait, I was given the vehicle with an 80% full tank of gas and very low rear left tire pressure. Image attached. I had to wait even longer for budget to take the vehicle back and correct the issues.
After returning the vehicle (12 hours earlier than specified), I received a bill with unexplained charges, including a charge for fuel (Image attached of my return with a full tank) and a “damage capture report”. Instead of explaining it all, I have attached all the images. I will say however that the images I have attached were in fact that blurry and unreadable. On top of having no clue if those images were from the vehicle I rented, their claims of excessive sand are unreasonable. Are the vehicles not vacuumed and the mats not shaken off before delivery to the next customer?
The first email I didn’t bother worrying about because the claims were laughable, and I had full belief they would realize this before pursuing further charges. I was wrong. Today I received an email (attached) stating I must pay 250 USD for excessive soilage. After calling customer service he said he agrees based on the images he can give me a 50% discount on the charges which is also clearly unacceptable.
As a customer I had a horrible experience during pickup and after dropping off I would firmly place this company in the scammers category. The truth is budget is the biggest and they probably don’t care about losing customers. It's less about renting out cars and more about collecting as much as possible for hidden charges or unreasonable, baseless claims. The truth is the images they sent me are unclear and even with the loose sand they have shown, a shake of the mats and vacuum is expected standard procedure from a rental car company. If they’re looking for any more than $5 for the couple minutes of work that would’ve taken to deal with, I’m dealing with a scam, money hungry scumbags and you likely will too.
My mind is completely blown to the fact they would treat a customer like this, especially after a weeklong rental and I hope anyone reading this finds it as ridiculous as I have. I would motivate anyone reading this to avoid Budget at all costs. There are so many other companies out there and while rental car companies may be similar, I have never dealt with this level of insanity from any of them. Please do not rent from Budget.

While Budget's pricing was more affordable than the other rental car options, I deeply regret going with Budget. Several days into our travel, the key stopped working, and we were completely unable to operate the car (we couldn't unlock the doors and certainly couldn't crank or drive the car). Hours after contacting Budget, we were assisted by a towing company who came to us and fixed our key fob. Several days after returning the car, I received an invoice from Budget for the towing company expense (nearly $300). I called Budget to explain our circumstances, hoping the towing company invoice would not be my expense since they were only called because the car wasn't functioning.
Instead, Budget informed me that they would not waive the cost and suggested that I should have purchased their rental insurance. I tried several different avenues to get the message through: our car was not 100% operational during the time we rented it, and we had done nothing to cause this. I was met with zero empathy. I am truly more disappointed in Budget's terrible customer service than their poor quality of cars. I will never rent from Budget or its affiliates/partners again.

I was completely stunned because I didn’t encounter any collide or hit anything. I strongly believe the windshield already damaged when I pick it up. I was part of my fault that I didn’t check the vehicle thoroughly when I pick it up. I was assumed the car is in perfect condition. Furthermore, the car was ran out the windshield washer. It is also due for maint but was not done. I just want to let others know my incident when they rent from Budget.

I was charged $125 for "Excessive Interior Dirt- Sand" after a 16-day rental driving down the California coast. The car certainly looked like it had been sed for two weeks, but we never did so at the beach and the sand was not excessive. This charge is arbitrary and pure corporate greed.

Had a family emergency come up and I rented a pick-up truck from Budget through their website. Paid up front 6 days before we had to pick up the truck and an hour and a half before the pickup time they called and told me that corporate had never sent them any trucks, let alone the truck we had rented. The offered me a few small SUVs, but they wouldn't work for what we needed. Then they said that there was a truck at the airport and they wouldn't charge me any extra to get that one. The airport is 30+ miles from my house. They told me to take an Uber and they would reimburse me up to $50 for the ride. Uber to the airport from my house is ~$80. When I told them the cost difference they told me that is all they can offer me. I told them that I didn't have the time to go to the airport before work and that I had rearranged my work schedule as much as I could.
I asked them if they could deliver the truck from the airport to the original location and they told me they won't do that. We ended up cancelling the reservation, I have to wait 3-5 business days for my refund, and we have no way of helping the family. We also took multiple days off work and now it doesn't matter since we will have to do this again because of Budget's mismanagement and lack of respect for their customers. I will never rent with them or Avis again and hope this review keeps someone else from trusting them to do their jobs.

Picked up a convertible Mustang at the Tampa Airport yesterday. Went for dinner last night and noticed the front tires both had the cords showing! So slick, so dangerous! Tried for hours to get help and just got terrible English speaking people who couldn't help. Told us we'd We have to drive the car to a Budget store. Finally got a nice girl at the store on Dal Mabry who said unfortunately we have to take it back to the airport to exchange it. Here goes our entire morning of our vacation. We were already unhappy with the car... It was so dirty... The windshield was so bad that when we drive in to the sun we could barely see. No more Budget for me! Budget....crap car!
