Everything about this company sucks. The Budget right by the airport in Birmingham Alabama is the worst rental car place in history hands down. I booked a vehicle a week in advance got there on time and tried to offer me a small ass sedan when I booked a 7 seat suv a whole week in advance. The budget Rental car company should be shut down completely!

I rented a car at Islip Airport and prepaid and there was a 45 minute wait online as the car was not at Fastbreak for pick up. I signed the contract which said it was full of gas, it had 1/4 tank so I took a picture and thought I would deal with that at return. As soon as I got on the highway I realized that the car was completely out of alignment and pulling to the right. It was 8:30 at night and pouring rain so I continued on to my lodging thinking I would return it to a local office as I did not want to go back on the highway with it. The local office ended up being closed for July 4th so I called roadside assistance which told me they had no idea when they could bring mr a new car so I took Uber ($130) every place I went that day.
Bought the car back to the local office and they had no cars on the lot so I returned it and rented a new car from Enterprise for even more money. Budget charged me $342 for an undrivable car that they were unable to replace. I spoke to a customer service manager after holding for 45 minutes and she held firm on the charge! I was robbed! Completely unethical business practice! I will never rent from them again.

I am very disappointed with Budget and the car I rented for a week. I waited in line for 45 minutes, to go through rental process and then another line to pick up the car. When I got the car, it was smelly and dirty. There was trash under the driver's side and the glove box (e.g. receipts). On a positive side, the car itself, Ford Bronco was good. When I returned the car, they charged me extra for gas and I had the car filled. I had to stand another liine for 20 more minutes until the credit was given. I tried to speak with the manager and he walked away and never returned to address my complaints. Bottom line, I will not use Budget again.

Your company is awful. Neither I, nor my family, nor anyone in my business will ever use Budget or Avis EVER again. I did not agree to this refund amount. You all said this is all you would give me. You all owe me more than $282.60. You can keep your dirty money. I haven’t received it anyway. You owe me now an additional $679.52 on top of that amount. My rental agreement was for 1 day which was for July 31 through Aug 1st. The total on the agreement was $167.25. I returned the car within the time of the rental agreement as I dropped off the car on August 1st. However, your worker there failed to check in the vehicle in your system and I was charged $1,129.37. Apparently he didn’t check it in until August 6th. I actually was in Nashville TN on August 6th, so I’m not sure how I could have returned it then. Even with the $282.60 refund (which I still have not seen btw), you all still owe me $679.52.
My brother and I dropped the vehicle off at the Budget at the Colorado Springs airport and the worker there said to just to leave the keys and he would check it in. I have a witness (my brother) and I’m sure you all can pull video cameras from the airport to show I dropped it off on time. I also presented to you all a gas receipt last year from a nearby gas station to prove I topped off the vehicle as evidence in the dispute process. You all promised multiple times I would receive a full refund — which I did not.
You all can keep your ill-gotten money. What makes me so angry about all this is that I flew to out to Colorado to visit my dad in ICU as he only had days to live due to cancer treatment complications. He was on his deathbed. I flew to Denver, picked up the vehicle at Budget on July 31. I then dropped the vehicle off at the Colorado Springs airport on August 1. I didn’t need the rental as my brother lives in Colorado Springs and I was able to use his extra car while there. My father died on August 4. I couldn’t believe that after all our family went through you all would screw us over and not care. Awful company. As much as I, my family, and my company have used Budget and Avis over the years, I don’t think your company cares a lick. You all suck. There are tons of reviews about how Budget scams people and overcharge. What you did to me is not uncommon business practice for your company apparently. Good riddance.

The desk was greatly understaffed, and the lot itself had just one person available to provide cars to the very long line of customers waiting outside in the blazing sun and 90° heat. I am a heart patient, and the heat was causing me to feel dehydrated and light headed. I had no water with me, and unfortunately there are no vending machines on the premises. I was legitimately concerned that I might go into afib or even pass out, and the entire experience was extremely stressful. Then when it was finally our turn, we were told that there were no SUV’s available, even though we had pre-paid for one. Our only choice was to accept a Chevy Malibu, which we did out of desperation to escape the heat, but we never received a refund.
We also noticed that the gas tank was not full when we received the car (see photo) and we immediately brought this to the attention of the staff at the exit point. We were informed, however, that there was nothing we could do about it unless we actually turned around and went back inside the building to notify the front desk staff, which we were unwilling to do at that point since the whole ordeal of getting the (wrong) car had already taken a ridiculous amount of time.
The car itself was pretty awful. Both the steering and brakes were problematic, and caused the car to jerk constantly. The road noise was also extremely loud; like nothing we had ever experienced: We had been warned repeatedly by staff to remember to present our gas receipt upon returning the vehicle, and we carefully researched all nearby gas stations in advance. But despite our diligence, the quest for gasoline before returning the car became a frustrating wild goose chase, nearly causing us to be late for our flight.
The first gas station listed online did not even exist, and the second one we found was actually closed. We succeeded with the third attempt, but when we tried to present our receipt to the staff at drop off, we were told we did not even need it after all. The gentlemen there simply said, “you’re good!” and waved us on. This was truly just an overall awful experience, from the poor customer service, to the terrible quality of the vehicle, to being ripped off twice: once by the fact that we were never refunded for the level of car we had paid for, and again by not being given a full tank of gas when we received the car. We will NOT be using Budget ever again, and anyone would like to avoid the kind of experience we just endured, I would strongly advise you to do the same!

We had rented through Budget for our trip. When we got home I had noticed our bill and it was way more than what it should of been. They ended up charging us for 2 insurances, which why would you need two of them, and wouldn't do anything about it. Customer service is poor and they obviously try and scam you out of more money. Would not recommend!!!

What a nightmare. I made a reservation at the Avis/Budget location on US Hwy 19 in Palm Harbor, only to show up and be told they had no cars available — even though I had a confirmed booking. Instead of taking responsibility, they sent me to the Tampa airport, over 30 minutes away, claiming I could pick up a car there. But when I got to the airport, the Avis office said they had nothing to do with my reservation and basically shrugged me off. The woman at the counter was completely unhelpful and seemed annoyed I was even asking for assistance. This whole experience was a waste of my time, money, and patience. No accountability, no coordination between locations, and clearly no respect for customers. I’ll never book with this company again. Fox rental car was the one that help us!

Very bad experience. First I’m given a key fob with Scotch tape holding it together. We were at the San Diego zoo and the car was dead. 2.8 miles away from the Rental facility. We could have walked there in one hour to exchange the vehicle but we were told that the tow truck would be there in an hour and a half and that they would pick myself, my wife and son up. Instead we waited four hours and a second tow truck company to pick the car up and just myself. My wife and son took a taxi. Incompetence. Unacceptable service. And then no partial refund because we prepaid. Horrible.

I rented a car from Budget at the Hilton Head Airport. Long story short, I lost my key. This lead to 22 phone calls and 3 emails between myself, customer service and emergency roadside service. It also took two days and three tow trucks. At one point, emergency roadside needed to talk to the Hilton Head desk and could not get through. They literally asked me to do so and then call them back! On more than one occasion, I had to call customer service to connect me to emergency roadside assistance because when I would call, it would ring eight times then disconnect. Ultimately, they told me the car would be towed to Hilton Head Airport. I changed my plane tickets from Savannah (where I was flying out of) to Hilton Head Airport. That cost me over $1000.
I got to Hilton Head airport and the guy at the desk could not possibly be ruder. I think he took pleasure in telling me the car was towed to Savannah and not his fault no one told me. I told him I had an email that said it would go to Hilton Head. He smirked and said "I'm sure you do" and then just stared. The whole ordeal cost me over $1000 to change my flight, over $600 for them to tow my car (they charged it twice and provided me no explanation), and the over $600 for the car rental. Ultimately, they were oh so kind to give me $300 off my rental and looked forward to showing me the exceptional service they provide. I reported them to the BBB and their responses provided incorrect and misleading information, so BBB closed the case.

I was changed $773 for a $329 rental. When calling customer service to get an answer I got the runaround. The representative kept back peddling and trying to use rental car lingo. When I asked for clarification, she was unable to provide because the charges were erroneous. I was told I would pay a fee of $177.13 on top of rental agreement, NOT $443 additional dollars. I spoke to 4 separate representative prior to dropping off car to confirm charges.

If I could give zero stars I would. We had to wait over an hour in line at the airport to get the car in the first place, it was in bad condition as far as cleanliness goes and was only half filled with what we thought was gas. It turned out to be an electric car which they never told us it would be, and they did not provide us with an adapter. We have wasted two hours on the phone to try to figure this out. They have sent us to two different charging places, neither of which can accommodate us and we’re still waiting to figure out how to charge this car so we can get back to the airport. Horrible service!!!

We had a reservation through Costco Travel for a 7-seater minivan with Budget at the Long Beach Airport location for pickup on a Thursday evening. The vehicle was reserved a couple months in advance for a family vacation that had been planned for months. When we arrived, we were told all vans were under recall and worse, the staff had no backup plan and could ONLY offer us a 5-seater, which obviously didn’t work for our group. We were told to call customer service to check other locations ourselves. After a long call, we were informed that John Wayne Airport had a 7-seater elite SUV available for $300 more. Frustrating, but we agreed to pay the extra just to move on.
After waiting in line for an hour at the John Wayne location, we were told they did not actually have a 7-seater available. We asked if we could instead rent two 5-seaters, but were told this wasn’t possible unless we called customer service again. Customer service then told us we’d have to cancel our reservation and rebook and paying full price for two cars.
This whole experience was chaotic, stressful, and unprofessional. At no point did anyone from Budget notify us in advance that our reserved vehicle was unavailable, despite having our contact info. No accountability, no real help, and no solutions when we were in a difficult spot. To top it off, customer service offered a 20% discount for next time but there won’t be a next time. Budget has permanently lost our business. Avoid Budget if you’re traveling with family or relying on a reservation that actually needs to be honored. Unreliable and disappointing.

My husband truck was down so we decided to rent through Budget 'cause of what we was quoted. We kept the truck a few extra days and they gave us an estimate of what it would cost of 404 so my husband took the rental back yesterday and they sent him a final bill for 5 days of 868.97. Please tell me where all these extra fees came from. They overcharged for the insurance by 115.00 and then the others fees of such as a taxable product fee and rental tax of 340.59, plus a nota-taxable fee of 44.95 on top the 238.87 already paid. What did we miss 'cause budget this is rip off and will not be renting from you gain ever. You are worst than HERTZ.

My family and I rented a small vehicle at Budget in punta cana international airport. It was the worst experience ever, our booking price was $233 for 5 days. We was ok with the price but then they tell us that we have to pay for insurance par day, and a collision deposit that was going to transfer back to my account in 30 to 40 days. The total came up to $633. Now I tried reaching out to them and they tell me I don’t have any refunds. That should of read the fine prints before signing. A total rip off.

We rented a luxury car at DTW. After our wait at checkout, we waited under a white tent for them to bring a Volvo to us. Pulled up in a Mazda and told us it was a Volvo. Next car was a Mercedes that still had trash inside. It was electric with only a 25% charge! Call center said we could exchange it at any Budget location. Drove 30 mins only to be told that was not the case. Drove an hour back to the airport and dropped it off. Went across the street to Enterprise. 10 mins and we were off in a clean car. No issues! We were charged extra b/c we were 1 hour over 24 hours! Still fighting that since we were given incorrect info as to retuning at any location.

I only gave it a1 because a 0 was not an option. If you rent online they will not tell you they need a major credit card to get the keys but if you're like me, I like paying everything off for my vacation so the only cash I need to bring is for souvenirs. Budget took my Mastercard debit card and reservation and paid off vehicle. When the time came to pick it up they told me I needed to show a major credit card to get the keys. I rented from them yearly since around 2015. Never no problem till now. The problem was now they wouldn't give us the rental and we had to look around for another company to find an 7 passenger SUV with no reservation and not expensive as all our money for a rental went to Budget who said 10 days for a refund. When making the reservation there was no mention of a major card. Found a small SUV 7 passenger at Enterprise same price with bumper to bumper insurance. Yes it was smaller but we had a vehicle.

I’ve done numerous rentals with various rental car businesses over the years, but by far my experiences with Budget Rental Car are the worst! Recently, I rented a car from Budget Rental Car at a nearby airport, only to receive a car that not only reeked of cigarette smoke but had several damages to the outside of the vehicle. It wasn’t even cleaned out but was dirty and still had numerous brochures in the back seat. There was even cigarette hole in the driver’s seat! Needless to say, I contacted Budget Rental Car Services, and they requested I take pictures of everything and submit it via email to specific case number. I was then informed to bring the car back and exchange it at any nearby Budget Rental Car.
Driving to return the car, I couldn’t even fasten my daughter’s safety belt in the back seat because chocolate was poured into the fastening buckle. I went to two separate locations, and their customer service not only lacked empathy for my situation but offered no support or any guidance to find a replacement vehicle for me. I ended up going back to the airport, but after seeing the lengthy line decided to contact Budget Rental Car Services to request a refund.
Again, customer service was atrocious. Not only they tendered no compassion, but told me they can refund my amount only after my keys are turned in and get a refund after 48 hours; however, I was also informed the two hours I drove after picking up the vehicle and going home, and then having to spend time to find another Budget Rental Car location, that I would be charged approximately $84 for the use! I decided to walk straight up to another Budget Rental Car representative at the airport who finally was the only person able to take the previous car’s key and provide me a different vehicle to use. Will I ever use Budget Rental Car again? Hell, no.

I had reserved my car weeks before I was to be at the Albany airport. My flight went well and was on time getting in at 4:15 p.m. EDT. When I got to the Budget Car rental office (they share a kiosk with Avis) I experienced a 25 customer line with three agents helping customers. I was discouraged but thought everything would proceed on a timely basis. I was so wrong. After 30 minutes I had not progressed one step. The same customers were with agents the whole time and had not moved on. It was a slow go. After and hour I had progressed roughly two customers. People who's turn to was to get a car and move on were going nowhere.
At this point the third agent at the Budget/Avis counter got her water bottle and left leaving two agents and approximately an 18 customers deep (to me) and growing line behind me. Customers in front of me were obviously angry, frustrated and upset. It was obvious that they did not have the cars promised to people who had made a prior reservation. The one gentleman at the counter seemed to pass people through much more efficiently than the young lady at the counter. Approximately 30 to 45 minutes after she left, the third employee returned carrying her water bottle. She went to a small enclosed area behind the counter, filled her water bottle, looked at several piles of documents and finally returned to the counter to address customers in a growing line. One frustrated customer was turned away after arguing his case for what seemed like an hour.
The gentleman agent kept running through customers and didn't seem to have the same problem as the other two employees. A new customer would finally get to the counter and their transaction would take maybe 15 minutes with the male agent but if you got one of the two other agents customers were there for 30 to 45 minutes. These two agents were now on their cell phones engaging help from either management or an employee in the car staging garage trying to get keys for vehicles.
After 2 and 1/2 grueling hours on my feet in a hot airport it as finally my turn in line. I gave one of the ladies who had been on the phone my copy of the rental agreement. She typed in the number with what was a smile on her face but she was almost afraid of what she was inevitably going to see on the screen. NO CAR! She fumbled on her computer terminal doing what I could not tell. She had this scared, almost frightened grin on her face that was unprofessional look on her face. I'm trying to keep in mind that her company had seemingly put her in an impossible situation, renting cars to customers with reservations that weren't there. She finally printed up a contract on a dot matrix printer, I signed it taking the options I had signed up and refusing the options that I didn't want. She sent me out to the garage with one signed page and no key.
Now, I'm in the car staging garage. It is a hot, muggy Albany, New York night and there is now a line 10 of the same customers from inside and one person to help these people. The inside counter people have just handed off the customers to the outside "retrieve the car" guys or guy in this instance. Now this guy is in the car return shack with keys that are occasionally being tossed on a counter by one guy checking in returning cars. The former employee is discombobulated and is running around in circles trying to do things he is not capable of. Helping angry, frustrated customers. The lady in front of me said that there had been two guys there but one had been working for over ten hours and he was going home leaving her in line with no one to help that line. She was livid.
We were 6 deep in a line that was going nowhere fast in a hot, humid garage with a seemingly helpless person trying his best to help customers. He, for some reason, was printing contracts on his dot matrix printer and customers were confused and befuddled but he seemed to slowly get them on their way. It finally got to my turn in line. He searched the counter for a key fob, finally found it and told me to go to parking space A-12. It was now 9:40 p.m. and my drive to Oneonta, NY could begin. 5 hours to check out a reserved rental car is a joke. Big Company Budget Car rental should be ashamed for treating both customers and employees like this. I will NEVER use Budget Car Rental again.

I am not one to leave reviews, but I would give zero stars if I could. My husband and I packed up everything we own to move across country and rented with Budget because USAA has a relationship with them. Not only did the first truck’s check engine light come on 3/4 of the way to our new apartment, but my husband was stuck for ten hours before someone could come out and look at the truck and ANOTHER two hours before it could be towed, as the mechanic deemed it out of commission. Mind you- It’s the middle of summer with a high of 93 and he’s stuck at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere while all of this is happening. Fine, we get it, life happens.
We were given a second truck the next day. The second truck has a hole in the roof, is absolutely disgusting, and (to really rub salt in the wound) lasted about 10 miles before the SECOND truck’s check engine light turned on. My husband has been stranded in Wisconsin for two days because Budget can’t get their s*** together. We have been lucky enough to work with very kind people who are supplemental to Budget’s service (e.g. local contractors for towing, service, etc.), however, that doesn’t negate the fact that my fiancé is spending HUNDREDS more on food, accommodations, and fuel driving back-and-forth to rental trucks than we had INITIALLY budgeted. The name budget is a lie — you may save money up front, but you absolutely will pay in time you cannot get back.
We have been through the wringer with person after person on the 24-hour assistance line, to no avail. This has been, by far, the worst experience I have ever had with a company. I am so concerned, and not to sound like a total Karen, but will absolutely never refer anyone to Budget and will continue to share this story until my husband is in our brand new apartment four hundred miles away, safe.

Extremely Disappointing Experience – Major Customer Service and Vehicle Issues. I waited in line over 102 minutes to pick up my Budget rental. The pickup process was complete chaos — the line order was disorganized, and only two representatives were working the counter for a large number of frustrated customers. When I finally reached the desk, I was told the passenger van was not clean and needed attention. After waiting another 20 minutes, I was informed the van was actually at a different location and not yet brought over. I was then told I could walk with my entire group of eight people, including seniors and children — all with luggage — to retrieve it myself.
After a 9-minute walk in the heat, we arrived to find the van was not in spot W44 as stated. While standing there in confusion, one member of our party sought help from the Avis counter, where thankfully a kind representative changed our contract to a van in the garage. Unfortunately, that van had multiple issues — the most concerning being a malfunctioning sliding door that was off track, making it difficult and unsafe to open and close.
This experience was completely unacceptable. I will never rent from Budget again, and I am sharing this review across all platforms and with everyone I know. Sadly, I later learned that this type of experience is common, which is deeply troubling. Budget must urgently reassess its customer service practices and retrain employees to prevent these types of breakdowns in service and safety. Original Rental Agreement Number: ** – Budget Car #**. I rented my vehicle from the Budget at the MCO airport in Orlando. If you choose to rent a car with them, review the contract thoroughly and ask questions before signing. Their staff will not voluntarily explain the nuances between their different offerings. For example, they have two different E-Toll options for their vehicles. A standard option (pay for the tolls that you incur and a small convenience fee on the days you incur them) and an unlimited option (pay a flat rate every day of your rental regardless if you go through tolls). The staff member that finalized my reservation simply asked me, "Do you plan on using the toll unit in the vehicle?" to which I responded, "Yes." I had no idea at the time there were two different toll programs. He then proceeded to sign me up for their E-Toll Unlimited program and I was hit with a hefty fee at the end of my reservation. Be careful!

Never and I mean never rent a car from Budget. Budget has become real shady. I reserve a car from Budget on July 10. In my reservation I refused the Budget insurance, because my Allstate Insurance covers me for rentals. When I did pre-check, Budget ask me again and I refused. When I got to the Budget counter, they ask me again did I was insurance on the car and I said no. My Allstate Insurance covers me for rentals. Why did the Budget representative charge me insurance of $114.45 on my car. They specifically added the charge after I told them several times that I didn't want the insurance.
Your pre-check should be done and you shouldn't have to go to the counter, for what, they have already taken your money and have your license information. Why do you still need to go to the counter, so they can trick you into signing documents. Once you sign you're done. Again, do not rent from. Just trying to warn you of their shady practices. My rental should've been $112.11, but they added $114.45 additionally for insurance that I refused to take several times. Budget is a scam. Stay away. I would have left a 0 review.

DO NOT RENT FROM BUDGET. This company scammed me to pay for damage their own employees did to the car. We picked up our car at the Tampa Airport. As we were leaving, the customer service agent said, “It’s a new car. If anything happens to it, it’s your fault.” We thought, “That’s a really weird thing to say.” 10 minutes into driving, the whole underneath of the bumper fell off and began dragging on the ground. We realized we’d been given a broken car on purpose to get out of claiming the damage I assume one of their employees caused and hid. When we were safely able to pull over (it fell apart on a bridge to make matters worse), you could see that someone had tried to tie up the bumper, the tie snapped, and the whole thing fell down.
We called to get a car replacement. I’d been traveling all day, it was 90 degrees out, I was tired, I was starving, and I was frazzled from having a car fall apart beneath me, and I just wanted to cry. There was no discount for giving us a broken car. No apology or even concern for our welfare. We had to wait for a tow, go back to the airport, get another car, and drive back that whole way again, wasting hours of our time. Then they billed me for the damage.
When I disputed the charge, saying I shouldn’t have to pay for an already broken car, they demanded pictures of the damage at the time we picked up the car. I failed to lie down on my back in order to inspect and take pictures of the undercarriage of the car. I inspect the car for body damage, but lying on the ground to inspect parts of a car that are a complete mystery to me is beyond what a customer should be expected to do. I did send pictures that showed where the under bumper had been tied up, which they disregarded. That I had only been driving minutes before the thing literally started falling apart also did not matter. So now I’m out thousands of dollars to pay Budget to fix their car that they broke themselves. Looking online, it looks like this is a scam they pull regularly, so go somewhere else (FYI, they also own, Avis, Payless Car Rental, and ZipCar).

I rented a car from Budget and was charged $ 483.91. I was given a refund by the counter agent when I picked up the car of $ 27.05. I was then charged an additional fee of $ 34.74 when I returned the Car (showed up on my credit card). When I called they said it was for refueling which was a lie, we filled it up in the gas station on the same road as the airport a whole $ 6.50 (I didn't want any questions) so I had to send them the receipts and copy of all the other charges, they kept saying I was only charged $ 456.86. They refunded $7.69 and said it was resolved but kept the $ 27.05 and told me it was a computer glitch, they couldn't explain why. I will never rent from this rip off car company. I hope you won't either. The counter Lady was really sweet but the customer service sucks. Just talked in circles, really had no excuse. Renters beware renting from Budget. We rented a car at Dallas Fortworth Airport June 27. The car inside was dirty but we were in a rush so for a week it would do. The next morning we drive and the driver’s front wheel was leaking air. We put in air and observed. 2 days later tire was deflated again. We call roadside but had trouble getting through to a live person so we called the local Dallas Budget. He told us that they would charge us for a new tire and recommend we go to Discount Tires to get it patch. At Discount Tires, they told us both front tires were so bad, the treads were less than 2 and they could not patch it. In fact, they said Budget should have never let us drive in it.
So I go to the nearest Budget which was at Dallas Love Field and traded in for another car without problem. Yesterday I get an email that they are charging $125 me for stains inside the car. Are you kidding? That car was dirty!!! If they didn’t recognize the terrible front tires that could have gotten me killed, I am certain no one looked inside that car. We DID NOT spill anything. Lesson learned!! Take pictures of inside too and don’t accept the rental if it is has any stains because Budget will make someone pay even if it isn’t the right person. I will not be renting from Budget again and encourage everyone to avoid them. Budget did not do its job because they are trying to turn over the cars fast. So for my inconveniences and a dirty car, I get charge an extra $125.

I reserved a car to be picked up at Logan Airport in Boston Massachusetts on July 9th. As I arrived at the counter there were at least 50 people ahead of me. I got in line after almost an hour and a half. A lady (Budget employee) started yelling that if anyone had a reservation get out of line and go to another line in a different area. So we went. There were about 20 people in that line. Shortly after getting in line another Budget employee began yelling that unless we had a special membership we had to go back where we started. Grrr. There was NO ONE to get information from. I canceled my reservation then and there. Went to another rental company and within 15 minutes was on my way.. for about the same price for the same grade vehicle. I will NEVER use Budget again.

I recently rented a 7-seater vehicle and prepaid $179.01 for a one-day rental. After a 20-hour international flight, I wanted to ensure my family could travel home comfortably, without being cramped or struggling with our luggage. Unfortunately, the rental process was already slow—due to limited staff handling a high volume of customers—and took about an hour.
When we finally reached the vehicle, we were surprised and disappointed to find that it was a 5-seater, not the 7-seater I had reserved and paid for. Loading our luggage took over 35 minutes, as it filled up the two back seats and the small trunk, leaving my family cramped and uncomfortable. After such a long journey, this was the last thing we needed.
I voiced my concerns at the exit gate, and a kind gentleman there advised me to return to customer service to request the correct vehicle. However, with another three hours of travel ahead of us, I simply couldn’t go through the entire rental process again. It was an exhausting and frustrating experience — especially with children.
Unfortunately, this was my second negative experience. On a previous occasion, Budget falsely attempted to charge me nearly $3,000 for damages that never occurred. Only after I offered to send video evidence of the vehicle’s condition at drop-off—something I always document—was the claim withdrawn. I plan to write a public review to alert other customers to these issues. I hope this feedback helps improve the service and prevents others from facing similar situations.

I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding my recent experience with Budget Rental Car, which involved misleading pricing, poor customer service, and the failure to return a $194.20 hold that I was assured would be refunded. When I booked the rental, I was told that the total cost would be $257.75. I paid this amount in full with the understanding that an additional $194.20 hold would be placed on my card temporarily and refunded upon return of the vehicle. However, the total charge to my account ended up being $451.95, and I was never refunded the $194.20 hold, despite being told otherwise at the time of rental.
When I contacted Budget customer service to resolve this issue, I was falsely told that the additional charge was due to insurance. This is not accurate, as I have my own personal insurance and declined any additional coverage at the time of rental. This experience was not only misleading but also unprofessional. Had I known the total cost would be over $450, I would have gone with my existing reservation at Enterprise. The location I visited provided poor service, and the misrepresentation of costs is unacceptable. I am requesting an immediate refund of the $194.20 that was improperly withheld and a written explanation for this overcharge. Please respond within 7 business days before I escalate this complaint to consumer protection agencies and consider taking further action.

⭐️ (1 out of 5 stars). Unacceptable Delay – Missed Business Meeting Due to Poor Service. Very disappointed in Budget’s customer service. We reserved our car for Friday at 10:00 AM and arrived at Atlanta International Airport on time at 9:30 AM, checked in at the Budget counter at 10:00 AM — but didn’t receive our vehicle until 1:30 PM, after waiting 3.5 hours.
We spent 2 full hours just waiting in line, and once we were finally checked in, we waited another 1.5 hours for the car with no clear explanation. All we were told was that they were “waiting for the car to arrive.” It was clear the location was overbooked and unprepared. Despite explaining multiple times that I had an important business meeting at 2:00 PM, no urgency or accommodation was offered. I ultimately missed my meeting due to their complete lack of organization and accountability. I chose Budget expecting reliable service — instead, I experienced chaos and disrespect for customers’ time. I will not be booking with them again.

During the rental, I discovered a significant tire bulge (approximately one inch) on the rear, right tire. This kind of sidewall damage made the vehicle unsafe to drive, particularly on highways or over long distances. I contacted Budget’s roadside assistance, but they were unable to help. All they said was that I could drive the vehicle to a repair shop (risking my safety in doing so) and that they would reimburse me if I went out of pocket to replace the tire. No repair shops were open, as it was Sunday, on 4th of July weekend. So, I was advised that replacement vehicles were available at the nearest Budget location, so I reluctantly risked driving the unsafe vehicle there. However, once I arrived, I was told that no vehicles were actually available.
At that point, with no viable options and needing to catch a flight, I had no choice but to leave the car at that location and take a $289.22 Uber to the airport. This entire situation was the result of a vehicle safety failure and conflicting information provided by Budget staff. But they charged me a $200 one-way fee and gave no help.

At the counter they had told us to simply take pictures of any damage and it would be easy to rectify this. We called Budget and they instructed us to return the car to Cork Airport where they could get us another. At Cork, they commented that Dublin had dumped their problems on them and were not joking and treated us as such. They kept insisting on showing us the initial damage report despite us telling them that we already knew that Budget had missed the initial damage on the car. They charged us 660 euros to pay for a new windshield that we had not damaged.
I appealed this twice and got no favorable response. Budget took the line that because they didn't notice it and we didn't notice it in the lot that we were responsible for it when it was clearly much more likely that good customers like us would not have noticed it until 30 minutes into our drive and that we did not cause it. I would not rent from Budget.

When I arrived at the Budget rental counter, I presented the Expedia/Budget rental reservation that was made 17 August 2024. After the counter attendant looked at it, she said she would not honor the agreement because there had been a glitch in the system. She said I should have received an email from Expedia stating the agreement was void. I looked for this email and there wasn’t one. The only email I had was an email that was received the day before we traveled, from Budget: “Ready for your trip, thank you for choosing Budget! We look forward to seeing you a 03:30 PM at St. Thomas. When you arrive, come to the Budget counter to pick up your rental agreement and keys. We will be waiting for you”. I also called Expedia and they couldn’t find a cancelation email in their system.
She said she had a vehicle, but it would be at a much higher rate. The original agreement was for $570.03, and the new rate would be $1,391.36—a 144% increase--$821 more. So here I was, in St. Thomas with a dilemma—take the car at the hijacked rate or go without a car. So, we took the car hoping to resolve the issue later. So, this is where she really screwed me, the desk attendant cancelled the original reservation and created a new booking. **. This meant that Expedia was out of the picture and they could not help me.
This shady agent also changed my vehicle class so when I disputed it with the credit card company, they said that I changed the rental agreement by getting a different vehicle. I had reservations 8 months in advance, which were not honored, and the price was changed once I was at the counter. Stay away from Budget!!!! I have contacted Expedia and Budget to try to resolve the issue without any success. Because I signed a new contract I was held to the new rate based on hostage tactics at the rental counter. A phone call to Budget said they will have a car for me at 10:30 a.m.!!! Are you kidding me!!! Never mind that I had plans to meet folks earlier than 10:30 a.m. Horrible Customer Service. He said my appointment was for 4 pm and I responded back that it was almost 5 pm. Worst place ever, went with Enterprise instead.

We had an awful experience renting a car. After arriving on time, we were forced to wait over 2 hours just to get a vehicle. The car we reserved was unavailable, and there were no upgrades offered to make up for it. The vehicle we were finally given was dirty and reeked of urine—completely unacceptable. Since the rental, I have called customer service four times and have been told each time that a case is being submitted for reimbursement. Weeks later, I still haven’t received any credit or resolution. This has been incredibly frustrating and disappointing. Overall, the service was unreliable, unprofessional, and unsanitary. I won’t be renting from this company again.

DO NOT RENT FROM BUDGET — They Do NOT Honor Reservations. Just spent $45 to not rent a car from Budget. Why? Because they decided not to honor my prepaid reservation due to "inventory issues." But they had ALL DAY to call, text, or email me — and did nothing. I showed up, 4th in line, only to be told there were no cars. The man in front of me? He didn’t have a reservation. But he had his kid with him. I overheard "Sam" (Budget) tell him no cars were available — then suddenly, Sam "makes it happen" for him. I watched as he was handed keys to a red SUV and walked away smiling.
My turn at the counter: I’m told by Amadou (Budget) that my reservation — made earlier that day — won’t be honored. I asked about the guy before me. Amadou brushes me off, until I insist on speaking to Sam. Sam and Amadou speak for two minutes. Then suddenly the story changes: "Oh, that guy did have a reservation." No. He didn’t. I confirmed it myself by speaking with him outside. Sam gave him a car last minute, no reservation. I missed something important for my own child that day. All while Budget played games and handed my car to someone else — likely because they thought I wouldn't notice. It is called hypervigilance - I noticed - I overheard - I confirmed. I spent $45 on Ubers to and from Budget, just to be stranded.
So listen:- If you’re planning a vacation, Budget might ruin it.
- If you need a car for a child’s major life event, Budget might rob you of that moment.
- If you need to transport someone to medical treatment, pray they survive your interaction with Budget. And worst of all: you won’t realize this is a pattern until it happens to you. This isn't rare — just read the other reviews. Budget: you’ve earned this one-star and then some.

Bait and Switch? I reserved an electric Luxury Elite Long Range vehicle (Genesis G80E or similar) at Houston Intercontinental (IAH). Instead, Budget provided a Ford F-150 Lightning. I was told it belongs to the same rental class, but the truck I received was the Standard Range model (240 miles), not the Extended Range (320 miles). Budget’s website clearly labels “Long Range” as the higher-range offering, so this felt misleading. On top of that, the rental line was extremely slow. I waited over two hours at noon on Saturday, and the queue length had not shortened by the time I finally got to the counter.

Let's start with the 1st Suburban we got. Picked it up June 21st. 1st thing I noticed was the "CHANGE OIL SOON" light is on. On Monday the 23rd we had a flat. Pulled the tire off and found it is bald with cords showing. Upon inspecting the other 3 we found they ALL are bald with cords showing! After waiting on hold and being transferred twice we got a replacement suburban lined up. Unfortunately for us, we had to drive an hour to Bangor Maine to swap them and then drive the hour back to where we were staying.
The next day with the second Suburban we went up to Cadillac Mountain. We stopped at a Walmart on our way back. When we came back out to the vehicle, the "Engine Oil Low Add Oil" message was on. The oil change trip was at 98%. We had to buy 2 quarts of oil and add it. Does anyone at this company pay attention to maintenance needs of the fleet? What a joke. We will be filing a formal complaint/claim with Budget. After that, we will NEVER use their services again.

We rented our vehicle on 6/14/25. It had a slight smell of "skunk" but because it was in the shade of the parking garage it wasn't super strong. Within hours of driving and the car sitting in the hot sun, the overwhelming smell of marijuana was giving us headaches and making us stink. We called Budget and they said to exchange it at the nearest Budget rental location. We were already hours away from where we originally rented. The person said they put notes in the system that read "will not be charged you until you have been able to exchange the vehicle". We called Hickory, NC; we spoke with Jay. We requested a new vehicle as suggested by Budget. Jay, from Hickory, was extremely rude and she only offered for us to sit there for an hour with a machine that could "hopefully" take care of the problem. This Hickory Budget location was not close by either.
We called Budget every day trying to find a resolution. On numerous occasions from different Budget agents, the same notes were read back to me about not being charged until we had a new vehicle. At one point we pulled into a gas station. There were several police officers with a drug dog checking a gentleman's truck. We kept driving because we were afraid the drug dog would check our vehicle and we would get in trouble...terrifying.
Jump forward to the day we returned it to the Charlotte airport. The sweet gal at the counter could not see the notes and was unable to help us. A million dollar company doesn't have a streamlined system to where every agent can see the same notes? We had to call customer service again, they're the only ones who can see the notes. On 6/22/25 there was a refund for one day's rental. That's a far cry from what I was told. Today, 6/26/25, spent time on hold, finally spoke with a supervisor who said they couldn't help us any further. Whatever the notes say is all they can do. Never rent from Budget. They treat their customers poorly and hope you just go away if you have a problem. Would give a zero if I could except the counter customer service people were very friendly but otherwise overall experience with phone customer service and vehicle was horrendous.

I recently rented a car from Budget at the Ontario Airport. Immediately upon starting the vehicle, the "Change Engine Oil Soon" light came on. I asked the attendant at the gate about it, and she assured me it was just a routine maintenance alert and that the car was fine to drive. Shortly after, I received news that my father was having a medical emergency, and I urgently needed to get to the hospital in Las Vegas. While driving through the desert, the check engine light came on, along with a warning that said "Engine Power Reduced." The car automatically slowed down to 60 mph on a 70 mph highway, creating an unsafe situation.
I immediately called Budget and was transferred three times before finally speaking with someone. I was told I could either wait for roadside assistance or drive to the nearest Budget location. As a woman alone on the side of the road in the desert, I did not feel safe waiting, so I had no choice but to continue driving under unsafe conditions. When I asked for the address of the nearest Budget location, the representative refused to provide it. I had to call a friend to look it up for me. When I arrived at the nearest Budget, the manager informed me that they only handle rentals, not exchanges, and that they were a franchise location. I was then directed to the Las Vegas Airport, further delaying my ability to get to the hospital.
At the airport, I was told that because my rental was not a one-way reservation, they needed to contact corporate before issuing a replacement vehicle for my return to Ontario. After returning home and calling Budget again, I was repeatedly dismissed, transferred, and unable to get help from anyone—including corporate. Eventually, I was told to visit a Budget location near my home. I did so, and again, they refused to help and directed me back to the original rental location at Ontario Airport. I made the trip back there, and after waiting while the manager helped other customers, I was simply handed a business card and told to email another manager.
This experience was incredibly frustrating, time-consuming, and unsafe. Budget provided me with a car in poor condition, gave me no real assistance in an emergency, and showed a total lack of customer care throughout. I strongly urge others to avoid renting from Budget, and I sincerely hope someone from your team takes responsibility for addressing this serious issue.

After changing flights, based on my conversation with Budget, I called Budget back to confirm the new return location. After much back and forth, I was charged over $700.00 for the return car. A Few hours later, we returned the car with their donut on and their spare tire with a slow leak in the trunk and I reported the incident at time of checking in car. I exchanged many emails with budget where they would not consider the case because I did not have documentation.
I believe the situation was self documenting. They could not understand that their own tire with a slow leak which I returned to them had inconvenienced us. I had a nightmare experience with Budget two days ago. We rented a 2025 Ford Escape from them. The car broke down in the middle of nowhere on the way to International Falls. It was extremely difficult to reach a live person on the phone. When we did reach live person, they have strong accent. It is hard to understand them. Then the first 7 calls somehow got disconnected or they just hung up. No one called us back. On the 8th call, the phone rep told me that we have to pay for the repair and they won't reimburse us!
My husband was able to get them approved a toll truck. That conversation lasted over 30 minutes. It took us about 5 hours to get them approved the tow truck. The tow truck driver said it took him an hour to get the payment approved for him. The tow truck took us and the broken car to our destination. In total, it took us 11 hours to get to International Falls from Princeton. It should have taken only four and half hours.
Then we took a taxi to the Budget rental car center in International Falls. The guy behind the counter has no knowledge of this. We have to explain to him what the problem is all over again. We had to go back to our hotel with him so he can check out what is wrong with the car. He provided a new rental car. That took another morning. We had to cancel a trip we reserve for that day. Unfortunately there are no more spots available for any trip during our length of the stay.
The company has very poor customer service. Communication between different depts is extremely poor. When their customers need them the most, such as car breaking down in the middle of nowhere, it seems to me they are trying their hardest to make it extremely difficult for you. Had I known what kind of customer service Budget/Avis has, I would not have rented from them even if it is much, much cheaper than the other companies. It is a very hard lesson to learn.

I added roadside assistance remembering a previous experience I had with Budget. Unfortunately on the last day of my trip I lost my car key. I phoned Budget Roadside would scheduled a tow but the tow sent the wrong size truck despite me telling them the clearance of the garage. I had to head to the airport. Had to pay for a shuttle which Budget was also supposed to reimburse. That didn't happen. I explained the situation to the Budget counter lady at the airport. She said they would take care of it. After I got home the key was found.
I had quite the headache but finally got it shipped to Budget. After the fact, Budget charged me an extra day rental and $400 for a new key. We reserved that particular size SUV for a long-distance trip with 5 adults, two dogs, all our luggage, and dog kennels (which were a non-negotiable requirement for the VRBO rental...) and supplies. We contacted Budget well in advance of our reservation, these past 6 months, on three different occasions: two in person and once over the phone. We explained how important it was for us to have that size SUV and each and every time, they GUARANTEED that the vehicle would be available.
We leave on our trip tomorrow morning, 6/19/2025 at 4 a.m. When we went to pick up our premium SUV at the Budget office today, 6/18/2025, at 12:30 p.m., and we were told that it wasn't available. Not only was the vehicle we RESERVED 6 MONTHS AGO not available at that location, the Budget rep, Josh, told us there wasn't a single premium SUV available in San Antonio - all they could offer was a Volkswagen Atlas or Mazda CX90. Extremely disappointed and knowing in advance that neither of those vehicles would provide the room we needed, we went to the parking lot with the Budget rep to view both vehicles. As expected, neither would work for us.
We've been planning this trip for 6 months, my wife's 60th birthday, with 12 family members from three different states, meeting us at our VRBO rental and now we don't have a vehicle to make the trip. Not only did we have to cancel the rental, but we also had to cancel the entire trip, which included our VRBO rental, which came with outrageous cancellation fees. Not once did anyone from Budget contact us to tell us our rental wouldn't be available. And to make sure they completed this miserable experience in style, not once have they offered to make this right, in any way, which includes their 1-800 customer service center, which, by the way, is the only way our Budget rep said we could file a complaint. This whole experience has been beyond stressful and heartbreaking, and I will NEVER forgive Budget for this and ruining what should have been an exciting and joyful celebration.

Picked up a car on 4/16/25 in Oregon to drive to Southern California. Stopped in Sacramento for the night. On 4/17/25 we continued driving south. We were going to get home on 4/17/25 and return the car on 4/18/25. As we were driving I noticed the brakes were not working that well and then one of the tires literally fell apart. This was a situation that could have killed us. We were forced to pull over on the side of the freeway in the middle of nowhere. There was no spare tire so I called roadside assistance. We were stranded in the dark on the side of a busy freeway for several hours waiting for a tow truck. We were supposed to be home this night but instead we had to get towed 150 mile to Los Angeles, completely out of our way, to get another car and we had to spend the night at a hotel.
We were told we would get reimbursed for the hotel up to $200 (good luck in Los Angeles). I was told that when we got to L.A. that I would not have to wait in line and they would have my replacement car waiting. At the Budget center in L.A. we got the run around. I had to wait in a really long line even after I told them what happened. After a long wait I tried talking to a supervisor and was finally helped. First they tried to give me a car that had a nail in the tire, it was even written on the window that it had a nail, but luckily the girl in the garage caught it. She was very helpful. She put me into another car right away and wrote the new info on the paperwork.
When we tried to leave the garage, the guy said we could not leave because the paperwork did not match the car. I explained what happened and he refused to help us. He told me I had to go upstairs and get it corrected. The same girl saw me and directed me to an office that was 50 feet away from this guy. She walked in with me and they were able to fix the paperwork. At least two people in the office told me the guy at the gate could have fixed it himself if he wanted to. We got to our hotel after 2am. It was $225.64.
On 4/18/25 I returned the car less than 3 hours after the original due time, even after everything that happened because of the death trap they gave us. They had the gall to charge me an additional $207.44 for an extra day and late fees. She said she had no control over it and I would have to file a claim with customer service. On 4/21/25 I contacted customer service and was told I had to wait another 5-7 days for the paperwork to be closed out and that someone would call me back by 4/28/25. On 5/6/25 I had to call back. I was told they would not refund the extra day of $207.44 but later that day it showed as a refund on my card.
On 5/6/25 I also submitted my refund request for the hotel as I was instructed to do. I received an email saying it was being forwarded to a Resolution Specialist for approval. They only refunded me $157.22 even though it was $225.64 and I was promised up to a $200 refund. I called back and asked for a refund for the original cost of my reservation since I was given a car that almost killed us. The rep refused to offer a refund but told me a supervisor who could issue a refund would call me within 4 hours. I never heard back from anyone. On 6/17/25 I called again. I was refused any refund, whole or partial, for my original reservation. I was also refused the additional amount for the hotel that I was originally promised. DO NOT USE BUDGET or AVIS, they are the same company. This was by far the worst rental car experience of my life.

I’m honestly shocked by how bad this experience was. Budget’s Miami International Airport location is completely disorganized and poorly run. I spent nearly half a day dealing with their incompetence — a total waste of my time and the start of my trip. The first car they gave me had bald tires, a nail in one, a barely attached front license plate, and other visible damage. I flagged it immediately. Instead of helping, the staff sent me in circles. No one communicated with each other, and not a single person took ownership.
Hours later, I got a second car — this one had severely damaged rims and scratches on the driver-side window, making it hard to see out of. By then, I was too drained to go through another pointless exchange. The staff never apologized, showed zero accountability, and clearly had no idea what they were doing. Skip Budget entirely. Go with Sixt or literally any other rental company. They’re often cheaper, and they actually know how to treat customers and maintain their vehicles.

A copy of the contract shows "accepting" all of these add-ons. The lady who checked us in did not acknowledge my response of "No" to additional services (i.e. Vehicle Damage Coverage, Supplemental Liability Insurance, etc.). I already had additional Rental Vehicle Damage Coverage through Travelocity. I did not need this additional Insurance. I have a witness that will verify I said "No"... The rental agent tried to slip a fast one on me. I will never rent from Budget ever again. They are dishonest and need to be investigated.

My rental was for $146 and they are now charging me $253. This has been a stressful day. I have called customer service and they’re doing everything they can to get this issue resolved. Thank God for the customer service representatives, but as far as the staff at that location, especially the manager is rude, disrespectful and a theft because he was the one who over charged me. I rented a midsize SUV and got a Dodge Hornet in which I had never heard of before but absolutely fell in love with, so much I now want to buy one. It is a Hybrid so you can use gas or electric and it comes with all the bells and whistles (auto assist, heated/cooling seats and steering wheel, turbo/sport mode, etc. etc, the list goes on and on). I rented a car at Nashville Airport. I drove it to my location approximately 50 miles away. I noticed a shimmy in the steering wheel at 50+ miles an hour. I drove the next day and it seemed to sway across lanes on the highway. I looked under the car and I find the front tires in a condition that was unsafe to drive. (See Attached) I spent about 3 hours on the phone between 4 different people trying to get a replacement car lined up. Since in my opinion this car was not safe to drive a tow truck was scheduled to come get it and take it back to Nashville Airport. I was in the middle of a family event that I had to leave to wait for the tow truck. Given this was Friday afternoon (3pm) before the Labor Day weekend it would have been a 3-4 hour round trip for me to ride back to Nashville airport to retrieve a replacement car.
They found another Budget location 1/2 way the distance on the way that the tow truck would be taking the car back and I was to go with him to be dropped off at the alternate location. I was given a time for the tow truck arrival of between 4:10-4:40 pm. The location Budget location closes at 5:30pm. The tow truck did not arrive until 5pm as such was not enough time to make it to the replacement car. The following morning I had to find a ride to retrieve the replacement vehicle. I was out 2 days of a rental car and missed 2 different family events that I travelled across country to attend. The real issue is that this car put myself and my family at risk as it was not safe to drive and how it got put in line to be rented is beyond me... How are these vehicles inspected?? After discussing with customer service I was offered a coupon for future rental and or a $40.00 refund. I declined as I will not use this company again.

Actually a No Star. I rented a car from Budget in Rock Springs, Wy. Which has a good staff. Was going to Salt Lake University of Utah Hospital, hopefully in time for my wife's emergency surgery. Above 65 mph the car had a thump thump right front. After the hospital. I went to Salt Lake Airport to swap cars. Easy Peasy. Stayed in Salt Lake for a few days and returned car to Rock Springs. Rock Springs could not check in the replacement car as it was listed as sitting in Walla Walla, WA.
My first car did show idle in Salt Lake. After 1.5 hours on the phone with Budget "Customer non Service" the car was still not checked in. I was told over the phone I needed to take the car back to SLC, 2.5 to 3 hour drive each way, and I was to resolve the situation. Apparently Budget has corporate and franchise locations. Help was corporate and SLC was not. The " non help desk" would not give me a direct phone number to SLC. That phone rolls to the "non help desk". I was told my reservation was still costing me each day and it was my problem.
No amount of my frustration or push back did a damn thing. Not sure what happened but I was not recognized as the customer but the "Help" this was my problem to resolve, not theirs. It seems like I can either drive back to SLC or get a lawyer. The Rock Springs agency, WITH customer service, is promising to actually help me. I believe they will try to do their best. It is impossible to get an American English person on the line and their foreign dialect is impossible to understand. Budget makes the charge without checking with the DOT in the state where the alleged charge is owed. That is done purposely to "float" your money while they get around to crediting your card. The onus is always on their good customers to send a receipt in and wait for them to acknowledge that the toll was paid and then they tell you it will take a week to 10 days to credit your card. It would take their employee less than a few minutes to access the state DOT where the toll charge was made to find out the toll was paid. BUT, that would mean they can't float your money for a couple of weeks. There has to be some way to put an end to this abuse and fraudulent charging!
