I rented a Chevy Camaro as a weekend treat for my two young boys. I paid about three times more than I normally do for an average car rental. We picked up the car in an airport garage which is pretty dark. We took off and drove for an hour. When we stopped we noticed several stains on the interior upholstery, liquid spilled on inside door panels, grease on dashboard and exterior appeared to be washed with a dirty sponge with black greasy streaks all over. In addition, the check engine light came on while we drove it. Lastly the vehicle wreaked of smoke. I responded to the standard email survey and received a standard form letter response which was very unsympathetic. I also sent CSR a snapshot of company website stating all vehicles were smoke free. Never received a response or any effort to rectify situation. I even sent a second follow up email 7 days later. Terrible, terrible experience and customer service.

It took me approximately 45 minutes to get a rubbish car. It was dirty and not ready when I arrived, and I had it booked from 3 months ago. How unprofessional are they! After getting the car, Ford Fusion, I to clean the car with their cloth at Dubai Airport in the heat. I questioned whether the car had reverse sensors, I was informed that they did. Guess what, it had noticed the car was of cheap quality which is supposed to be the same group as the Honda Accord. Totally disagree. Anyways I had to wait for them rubbish camera that makes no sound, really pointless.
When I returned the car, I informed them that let me pay for a toll charge as I have done one and that would avoid them taking money from my account, they refused to do that. Anyways I noticed about a week later or so, approximately 25AED riyals was taken from my bank account which also included a non-sterling transaction fee. I requested AVIS to provide a receipt of the money taken. Approx. a week later, after me sending numerous emails, they responded saying it was taken by mistake, REALLY! That is just so unprofessional of them, so they said, "We will refund it." A week later I checked my account, and noticed the money was still not refunded. I sent an email and no response.
They have stolen money from my account and I will be reporting them to the UAE consumer rights. It's not about the small amount of money, but the principle of them taking your money. They need to provide compensation for stealing my money and wasting my time to keep following up. Advise to all, do not hire from such an unprofessional rubbish company who steals consumers monies and do not refund it in timely manner.

I recently visited Iceland and had an AVIS rental car (booked through RentalCars.com). When I made the booking I ticked all the boxes to make sure I was fully protected and indeed I received an email confirming "FULL PROTECTION". It was bad enough that I had to wait in the queue for one hour, but when I got to the desk I was subjected to intense sales pressure to take additional AVIS insurance. The rep suggested that the Full Protection provided by RentalCars.com was inadequate because it was not AVIS insurance. I showed the rep the "FULL PROTECTION" details on my RentalCars.com app on my iPhone but still he insisted I needed more insurance. It put a cloud over our holiday as my wife was worried that we were not properly covered. WHY do we put up with these SCAMS? I'll never use Avis again and I hope this will begin a "butterfly" effect to stop this dishonest practice - please support me.

I travel overseas for extended periods of time and I rent vehicles. This last trip to Europe I rented a vehicle from Avis in Budapest Hungary and I have had nothing but a headache since then. I returned the vehicle to the lot so I could make my train ride out to the next country. I went into the building, it was unlocked, and no one was there. I went to another company's desk and they informed me that the AVIS people are rarely ever there. I went ahead and tucked my GPS that I rented under the counter and put my keys and paperwork in the dropbox as the sign said to do. They charged my credit card 1526.44 Euros and it should have only been 634 Euros. I obviously was shocked and immediately disputed it. They informed me and my credit card company that I had not returned the keys and paperwork and returned the car to another lot. I parked it right in front of an Avis sign.
I have had my lawyers involved and my credit card company as well. It makes no sense that I would return one thing and not all that was required. My bank has exhausted all efforts that they can, but Avis stands firm. I am discovering how Avis does business after reading all of the review on here and other sites, apparently overcharging people's cards is a game they play with many people. Bottom line, I will never use Avis or any of their other companies ever again. I urge anyone reading this to do it as well.

I travel frequently and have for the past 20 years. Years ago, a per mile charge was common... Years ago. I have not seen one on any rental that I have had for a minimum of 15 years. However, I took a car from Louisville and dropped it off in Cincinnati 2 weeks ago. Now, I have been renting a car every week recently and see my rate per day and the 50% markup on fees and know what I am paying. So I am lax about double-checking the non-rate area and the receipt when I drop my car off. Well, after arriving home after the drop-off, I noticed a $451 charge for a 3 day rental of a Toyota Corolla! That is when I backtracked and found a per mile charge on my reservation. On top of that, I was charged for 681 miles! I probably drove 200, max as I only drove to Lexington from Louisville and then to Cincinnati airport. However, since I never verified miles when taking or dropping off the car, I had no basis for an argument.
When I called customer service, they slightly reduced the rate and confirmed that a per mile charge still occurs nowadays, but they couldn't tell me WHEN it occurs. It occurs on "certain cars" but could not tell me a definitive way that I would know when! WTF? I have had one-way rentals in the past and have one scheduled in May and none of them had a per mile charge. I have gotten Corollas before and never had a per mile charge. It appears that I was randomly selected to see if I read through each rental that I receive and, if I don't, I receive the Stupid Penalty by getting it stuck to me. Their extra couple hundred dollars is a pittance to what they will lose out of to competitors.

Anticipated a VW Golf at Dusseldorf City Center rental office. Was given a Fiat 500X. Was told it was the same class as the Golf. Got on the Autobahn and tried to get up to cruising speed (120 - 130 or unlimited speed limit in some places) and found it only had a 5 speed gearbox. Got up to 130, looked at the tach and was buzzing along at 4000 rpm! I could watch the gas gauge go down. Kept looking for an overdrive button I might have missed but none to be found. Decided to live with it. Got to Kolding, Denmark the next day and the windshield wiper quit working in the rain. Luckily there was an Avis location there and after 3 hours of trying to get the wipers fixed they gave us a Nissan Qasqai (Rogue). No problems the rest of the trip until I returned the car at the end of the trip to the Dusseldorf location which had no parking spaces to leave the car. No one there on a Sunday. Parked it on the sidewalk behind the building and said goodbye.

Ok let's see where I would start. First I am from out of the country, I went to Avis to rent a car, my experience was one of the worst experience I have ever had. The person was very unprofessional in how she handle everything that was done. I felt that I was force to do something that I didn't want to do. She didn't explained nothing to me. All she wanted me to do was sign paperwork. I tried to cancel, but she had already stated she had charge the card. I am very disappointed with Avis. I tried calling customer service to inform them, to me it felt as if they didn't care. I hope that this issue get addressed so no one else experience this.

We rented a car online at SFO but used my dad's Avis preferred card. When I got there, they said I couldn't use his card so we had to start a new reservation. They for some reason couldn't cancel the first one but was very happy to rent another one to me and said I'd have to cancel the first one online. I called right away and spent over an hour trying to explain to the rep what happened! No problem finally she said! We went ahead and cancelled it and we got an email with our cancellation number except!!! They kept $150.00! Excuse me!!! We were at your Avis counter!!! You're the ones who told us we had to make a new reservation and yet couldn't cancel the first one! Do not ever use Avis!!! They are thieves! Now we paid over 600.00 for a two day rental! Avis should be sued!

My personal vehicle needed repairs, so I rented a car from Avis. I rented it for a week because I wasn't sure how long the repairs would take. Their customer service at Tucson International Airport is deplorable. They now have a policy (not posted ANYWHERE) that you can no longer use a debit card and must use a credit card. They also gave me a car with only a quarter tank of gas. I had to refill it - twice - because they threatened to charge me $10.00 per gallon if I didn't return it filled. Even though I turned it in a day early, they didn't refund me the extra day or the extra gas I had to put in the tank and charged more than what they said they would. Their manager is rude and disrespectful, and they have a lackadaisical attitude when it comes to customer service. I can guarantee that I will not use AVIS again.

DO NOT RENT FROM CHARLESTON, SC LOCATION OR FROM AVIS!!! They will LIE to you and TRICK you into taking an upgraded car and then charge you for the original car plus the upgraded car they talk you into, while LYING to your face about what you will actually be charged for the final rental!!! Now... the story behind the warning.
We rented and pre-paid a car online. At the time of pick-up, the "smooth talking", lying customer service man behind the counter told us it would only cost us $85 more (TOTAL) to upgrade to a sportier car. He even wrote "only $85" on a piece of paper and never once indicated to us that he was going to charge us for the pre-paid car plus an additional $85 "per day" for the upgrade! He told us it was a special they had that day and made us believe we were getting this great deal. :(
After receiving the final bill and noticed we were charged for not only 2 cars but also $85 "per day" for the upgrade, I tried calling Avis customer service to discuss our overcharge with them. I explained to "John" at customer service that we had been charged for 2 rental cars and that we were only supposed to pay for the upgrade car we actually rented. He wouldn't listen to what I had to say about being overcharged, all he did was tell me that we signed the contract and that he had to stick with what we signed. I tried to explain to him that the contract we signed and what we agreed to wasn't the same thing or correct. I also tried to explain to him that we were actually charged for 2 rental cars, not just the upgrade. John, at Avis customer service, was very rude and acted like he couldn't care less about our overcharge or the experience we had with the rental counter agent. He even hung up on me when I asked to speak to a manager!!!
NO WONDER THIS COMPANY HAS AN F- RATING WITH THE BBB!!! They are the absolute worst rental car company and has the worst customer service I have ever dealt with for a business!!! Avis, you should be ashamed for training your employees to act in such a manner!!! It's truly amazing that such poor customer service exists today and with such a large company. There are so many rental car companies to choose from... DO YOUR HOMEWORK, LOOK AT REVIEWS. NEVER will I rent from or recommend Avis again!!!

Let's see where to start. I was driving from NY to South Carolina. My personal car broke down and needed to be taken off the road while the dealer in SC worked on it. So I rented a car from Avis using my Visa debit/credit card (Rung up as a credit card transaction). They took almost 400 dollars for the rental. THEY HAD MY 400 DOLLARS! Get to the counter, was told I can't rent the car because I didn't take a flight? What the hell Avis. I have no car, 2 kids under 4, and a wife with no transportation.. AFTER I PAID YOU ALREADY.
Then you wanted to keep a cancellation fee at first. You did try to help me by moving my reservation to another spot, which was nice. Then you tried to tell me the same reservation/rental was going to cost me almost 100 dollars more. Oh btw, no transportation since the car was in the shop so it would be a pain in the ass to get a ride over to said new location. To top it off, the ladies at the front counter were no help at all and told me to call the company because I booked via their Avis.com website.

I have used Avis ever since I first started renting cars and I've never had a problem UNTIL recently... I made a reservation a month prior to my pick up on March 30th at 4:30pm at Dulles INT. Airport but when I got there I found out the Avis representative who made the reservation for me (Avis Reservation number) had put in some sort of business code... I'm not here for business. I'm military. So being under age the store wasn't able to help at all besides to call the reservation number and have them fix it. Three and a half hours later I finally get things fixed and I am given a 2016 Chevy Malibu. 2 days later the check engine light comes on the car so I take it to 2 different locations in the Virginia Beach and Norfolk Virginia area and they have no standard size vehicles so now I'm stuck with a car that has a check engine light on (Mind you this took 2 hours plus drive time of 1 hour to get figured out).
The next day I drive to Lynchburg VA Airport and they had a standard size 2016 Ford Fusion (5 hour ride to that airport for a car). When I got in the car, it was filthy as if no one had cleaned it but oh well no check engine light... 1 day later the Engine oil light and notification comes on just hours before driving down to Mississippi (2000 mile round trip) so again I have to find an Avis location that has a standard size vehicle for me in the Norfolk area. I am not on day 13 out of 24 with dealing with AVIS and these poorly cared for cars. I spent nearly $1,000 for 22 days but have now spend everybit of 12-13 hours of my hard earned vacation trying to get a reliable vehicle from Avis and not to mention the ear full my wife has been giving me for taking family time away. Worst experience. Wish me luck that my last few days don't get wasted with more AVIS problems. Thank you and have a great day.

I had a very bad experience today with Avis located 919 Parkside Walk Lane, GA 30044. My husband made a reservation with a confirmation number for pick-up today, April 4, 2017 at 5 pm and drop-off for Friday April 7, 2017 at 6 pm. Earlier this morning my husband received a confirmation phone for the pick-up of the vehicle, with the detail his wife (me) would be picking up the vehicle. I had to order a Uber drive to the location with the thought of picking up the car that was reserved for 5 pm but when the car was suppose to be picked up there was no car available. The nearest Avis could supply a car in Buford, GA. The person at the desk seemed like he didn't care at all about not being able to supply the vehicle that was reserved. "There's nothing I can do" is what he kept saying. My husband spoke to him on the phone and he was extremely apathetic to the whole situation. Very bad customer service.

First AVIS overcharge: Feb 05, 2017 – Feb 12, 2017 (7 days) total charge should have been $312.11, what was billed to my credit card was $1,054.49. That’s an overbill and charge of $742.38. This overcharge on AVIS’s part was not discovered by AVIS, I had to bring it to AVIS’s attention, which means I tried calling three times and placed on hold and transferred around multiple times to no avail, then had to leave work and go to the AVIS desk at the airport to try and resolve only to be apologized to and told it would be corrected immediately. 2 days later it still wasn’t resolved and I still needed my receipt which had not yet been posted so I had to go back to the airport’s AVIS desk again to get it. This screw-up which was totally AVIS’s fault cost me over 6 hours in wasted time and frustration.
Second AVIS overcharge: March 13, 2017 – Mar 20, 2017 (7 days) total charge should have been $283.73, what was charged to my credit card was $1,093.78 that’s an over bill and charge of $810.05. Again, this overcharge on AVIS’s part was not discovered by AVIS and I had to bring it to AVIS’s attention. THAT’S TWICE IN 2 MONTHS CHARGING ME OVER $1,500.00 AND MAKING ME JUMP THROUGH HOOPS TO GET IT BACK!!! This was a very large inconvenience as I was originally told that the issue would be resolved immediately but two weeks go by and then once it’s RESOLVED I’m told I still had to wait 4 - 5 days to see it posted.
Please know that because I have to submit ALL expenses in a timely manner to my company's accounting department the full amount was deducted from my pay check which was very inconvenient. What the company payroll takes back is actual cash from my check. What AVIS refunds back is a credit to my charge card which is two entirely different things.
Also at the time of my rental I informed and continue to inform the counter personnel that I DO NOT WANT E-ZPass, and that I pay for all my tolls IN CASH at time of use. Without my consent or knowledge the E-ZPass is evidentially still registering while closed-up in its box while I’m simultaneously paying cash and I just realized AVIS is charging my credit card for this without letting me know. STOP!!! Also, when I brought this up to the AVIS representative at Albany airport he simply said “You have to take that up with E-ZPass, it’s not my problem”, uh hello, I didn’t agree to anything with E-ZPass, AVIS did, all I agreed to do was rent a car not a E-ZPass, so it is not and should not be “MY PROBLEM”!!
I have not asked for anything other than what I originally contracted for but what amazes me is that AVIS puts me through all this POOR customer service and the only thing they do is say “sorry for the inconvenience” then they do it again. Not once has anyone attempted to make good on the trouble your company has put me through, but you want people to remain loyal customers. REALLY! I say this because I value good customer service and to overcharge a customer then have him/her take time out of their work day and travel back to the service desk twice over a three-day period and also make 3-4 phone calls to customer service only to have it finally resolved a week and a half later and still told that it will take 4-5 days to post is unacceptable. I know that the customer isn't always right, but on this one I don't think I'm wrong. Remember this is the second time this has been done to me in just as many months. Very frustrating.

I'm curious if anyone had an experience of being charged for a mechanical repair. AVIS BUDGET had to be the worse rental experience in my life and I certainly will not consider the company again in the US or abroad because of this problem. We rented a car from the Zurich Airport in Switzerland on November 2016 and have been fighting a ridiculous and unfair charge since. We drove the vehicle from Zurich to Salzburg traveling approximately 800 km round trip. On that trip, we had a problem with the clutch. The car began to have a strong odor on the return and we called to have the car picked up in Rorschach, CH. We are now billed $2789.18 for the repair of the clutch and the case has been closed by the Zurich office.
In addition, we could not have possibly burned out the clutch in this short distance. We believe this mechanical damage had to have begun with previous renters and we were just the last to drive and are now being billed for full repairs. We drive cars with a clutch regularly and have never had a problem before now. In addition AVIS BUDGET provide no reasonable documentation to charge us for this repair other than photos of the clutch. The contract we signed is all in German and no English documents were offered for us to even read the contract to understand how we can be charged for this.
We asked for the charge to be removed, we asked for a compromise and prorate the cost over the total miles on the car, lastly we disputed the charge with the credit card company. If nothing else offering to pay a prorated amount I feel would be reasonable and fair but AVIS BUDGET is more interested in bilking us for the repair than providing decent customer service. Anyone reading this I would highly recommend using the other services from Zurich Airport such as SIXT who we had excellent customer service with and a contract in English. Hertz and Europcar are other better options.

The guy behind the counter failed to notify me on the upgrade and when I spoke to customer service a week ago he told me I would get my full refund. After looking at my CC statement no money so I called back and after an hour on the phone I was told I would get a 50% credit on my CC.
Never again I would rent from Avis and I hope nobody else does either. This is the second time I had an issue with Avis. I prepaid a reservation toward the end of January 2017 for a car in mid-March 2017. At the time, I indicated that my arrival in LAX would be at 1230 PM. My flight was cancelled and I was rebooked two hours later. I went to the Avis website and noted that several parts of the reservation could be modified. I chose the time and changed it to 230 PM. Apparently, this caused my reservation to be charged an additional $67+.
I phoned Avis, however, I could not understand the person on the other end. Sounded like one of those Asian call centers. When I arrived in LAX, I took the shuttle to Avis and, once again, noticed my name was not on the board (this happens most of the time). I went in and told the agent of my problem. She was quite rude and she told me that she couldn't change anything. The agent next to her said that I shouldn't have stated I would be late. Rather than stating they would look into the problem or apologizing, they just made it worse. So... They "upgraded" me to a Jeep Cherokee. Not what I wanted, nor liked, but kept it anyway. I've been a loyal customer for several years and my most recent experience has been very disappointing. I have not even traveled yet and cannot even imagine what it would of been like if I actually had the car. I've been trying to resolve my issue with the customer service, but unable to do so. I booked my car initially on Jan 31st for a trip to Italy and then on Feb 18th, I wanted to update the rental to my husband's name because he will be the driver. When I called, the representative told me that I have to cancel the reservation and book a new one, and when I asked them if they could match the price they told me NO. Any other company would do this without a problem and work with a customer to match the price since I already prepaid and locked that price. I did not had any other choice but to cancel and re-book it for the higher price, because if I would of cancelled it completely I will lose $50.
Then on Mar 1st I made some modifications to the dates and pick up location. That went ok over the phone, however the rep told me that I will get a credit back for the difference which was over $250 in the next a couple of days. I've been waiting for about 3 weeks and did not get a refund. When I called again on Mar 18th another rep told me that I will get a refund after I return my car. This trip is 3 months away and when I asked them why I could not be refunded the difference the rep told me "it is our policy", and when I asked to speak to the manager he started yelling at me in Spanish and hang up. Very rude and unprofessional. This does not make any sense, why the company has to keep my money until I return the car. I called back and another rep told me the same and also he informed me that there will be no guarantee that the car that I booked will be there when I come to pick it up. I asked again to clarify.
I understand that sometimes that specific model will not be available, but it should be similar model to accommodate 6 people in our group plus luggage. He told me again that the reservation does not guarantee the vehicle availability. At that time we did not make any decisions and had no intention to cancel the reservation. When we hang up we received an email with cancellation stating that prepaid amount will be refunded minus $50. My husband wrote back to customer service immediately saying that we did not ask to cancel the reservation and if they can please reinstate the reservation? They replied No "We regret to inform you that we cannot retrieve cancel reservations, however, you may book a new one". It has been very stressful a couple of months just to book a car and make some modifications. The Mission statement does not represent experience that I received.

While I was returning the car, the Avis location was closed and so I have dropped the key in drop box and a photo was clicked and I went back home. Afterwards, it came to my notice that I was charged for DAY 2 by closing the rental agreement late (on a following day). I emailed this mistake by Avis Rep and then Day 2 charges were reversed.
Then after a week, I was charged again for Toll charges for the day I was not in Avis rental; when I looked at the Rental receipt and e-toll receipt, it was noticed that, Avis representative/someone has utilized rental car (by driving with Toll) on my name after I return it and have put Toll charges and DAY 2 rental charges (as mentioned above) on my card. By looking at the telephonic conversations I had on this issue with Avis reps/customer care, the whole system looks messy to me. They lied on my return timing, manipulated data with late contract closure and have put fraudulent charges on my card! My sincere advise is never ever rent a car from Avis.

This company doesn't even deserve the ability to be rated ONE star!! Renting from Avis rental car was by far the absolute WORST experience I've ever had when dealing with a company of some type of service. From start to finish everything was handled completely unprofessional and caused me more grief it's hard to believe it really happened!!! They cost me a lot of money by making my vacation get set back because of their lack to do their job correctly and finished it off by charging me $802.36 a week after dropping off the car and after paying DOUBLE than I had originally planned when picking up the car!
The worst part is, after speaking to SIX different people in customer service they were suppose to credit me $75.00 and give me TWO free days of rental because of setting my vacation back a couple days from the issues I endured because of this rental. What they ended up doing was NONE of what they promised and took $803 and costed me in the end total with ALL problems combined roughly $3000!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! I will NEVER AGAIN RENT FROM THIS COMPANY AND SUGGEST THAT IT BE ** DOWN!! Run from this place!!! Never trust them!!!

I booked a car with Avis Car Rental through the website BookIt.com. Initially, I book the car for 2 days from March 7th 11:00 am to March 8th 3:00 pm (which is actually a day and 4 hours but the price showed 2 days). However, I return the car after only 1 day from March 7th 10:48 am to March 8th 10:29 am. In spite, using the car for only one day, Avis Rental Car charged me for 2 days and a basic coverage fee. When I called to get a refund back on my credit card the representative was very rude and did not want to refund the money. He proceeded to say that I received a discount for renting the car for two days which was clearly untrue according to the price of a one day rental vs a two day rental and then said they charge by the hour. After over two hours he finally gave me 25% off my charge which still was not equal to giving me a full refund for using the car for 1 day instead of 2.

I rented a van and prepaid for it. I asked to drop off the van at the local airport for an additional $28 fee. No problem. When we checked the final bill there was a $25 dollar misc fee charged to my credit card. My wife called Avis to inquire what the $25 misc fee was and the customer service rep said it was for air conditioning. What is the purpose of the air conditioning charge and the woman responded, "The ac is what cools the car down." My wife thought she was joking, but she wasn't joking. My wife said we would contend the charge and that's when the rep said she would credit us the $25. Question: how many people don't question the fee. I'll bet and I'm sure Avis bet, not that many!!!

Avis started off by adding $125 to my original booking fee for no reason, on questioning it they claimed it was an honest mistake. Perhaps this is true. However, after I returned the car and the man told me all was OK, I later received a letter to say I was being charged $250 for soil in the car. I've seen the photos of the dirt, yes there was some muddy footprints in the footwell, BUT it would take 5 mins with a vacuum to clean. To charge $250 for a muddy footprint in the footwell when the reason for the dirt is because of the snow/ice is against their own contract terms that allow for "fair wear and tear". If you want to avoid unwanted costs, AVOID AVIS.

Do NOT rent from this company! I declined all the optional coverages in my PREPAID reservation. At pick up of the vehicle, there are pages and pages to be signed or initialed and travelers are rushed and tired so you have to rely on their counter people for their expertise and honesty, neither of which exist with this company! When they asked for the name of my insurance company, I said "hang on, I need to think of the name, I just switched a couple of weeks ago". They said "don't worry, just write in Avis".
Did I know that was now saying that I was accepting their insurance? NO! Then I asked if I needed the toll road thing to my destination. Since I was unfamiliar with the area and they said "yes, there are tolls", so I DID decide to take that. I go to the car, there is no toll road thing in it. So back I go and they give me a different car that did have it. There was ONE toll and they took cash! I did not need to spend $3.95 per day PLUS the toll! I contacted them and their attitude was "too bad - that's not our problem". Integrity is sorely lacking! I wouldn't recommend this business to my enemies!

Don't risk you life hiring a car from Avis car rental. I hired a car online to collect in Bangkok airport. On arrival they offered me a Toyota Vios. Which is what I had booked... except it was damaged and dents and not clean. So I said "I would not accept this car." The manager told me "that's what you ordered." I said "I didn't order a dirty damaged car." So he said "I will give you an upgrade"... a Honda city. This was worse than the first car with large dent on the bonnet and... well... dents everywhere. Dirty and grubby inside. So I said no to this one also. He said "that's it or you wait for a couple of hours till something else comes in." We took the car but not happy.
On our travels about 3 days later. I had the oil and water checked and found that the brake fluid was near empty so I purchased the appropriate fluid and it was filled... Also no water in the screen washer. Dangerous... yes with possible brake failure. So can only assume that the car was not checked or cleaned before we took the car. NEVER AGAIN.

No real info from Avis desk employees, just what we could hear while standing in line. Rumor has it that it is a 3-4 hour wait for cars... at least other rental agencies were talking to people in line & trying to do something. Avis Desk people were useless.
Tried Avis customer service phone number. I think the person was out of country and was no help. Gave me the customer service number to call... but it was the number I used to reach them. Need to get to Monterey to look after my aging parents for a couple of days (ages 91 & 86) so I am taking a $160 cab/shuttle ride just to get to them. However, when they gave us the contract they had substituted a much higher priced car not what we were told. I admit I missed this and they added all sorts of upgrades we did not verbally agree to but were put on the contract. When the final bill from Avis arrive onto my credit card account the charges were much higher than anticipated.
I challenged these with Avis for over 2 months and twice was promised a refund (Avis North America) but when followed up (by me), was informed that Avis France denied my claims. I rented a car from the Greensboro NC airport through Avis. I would never rent from them again from any location after my experience! They didn't properly inspect my car before allowing me to drive it out of the airport! I planned a 5-day rental. My daughter and I waited for almost an hour, in the middle of the night, while he checked priority business members in, even though we had arrived at the counter before everyone else. The gentleman sold me the insurance for 13.99 a day and didn't mention anything about emergency roadside service charges if you didn't purchase that plan and needed to utilize for some reason. I did not get the car I reserved!
The next morning I noticed a pungent odor of smoke, they supposedly don't allow smoking without charging a 235 fee and the oil light was on. I didn't want to be charged for the smell so I called to tell them about both. They told me I could go to the nearest Avis and exchange, went there and they had nothing in my class of car, in hindsight I should have switched!!! They sprayed my car down with some deodorizer and I was on my way. The next morning after reaching our destination the passenger front tire was flat. It was not only flat but was BALD and had been for a while! Plus there was NO jack in the trunk and it took me 4 hours of calls on a Friday morning to find out without purchasing the Roadside assistance I would more than likely have to pay for someone to come and put the mini donut spare on the car because I didn't pay an additional 9.99 per day!
I then didn't feel safe riding around with a spare in an unfamiliar place, so we had to take 3 hours out of our day to go and exchange the vehicle. They still didn't have the car that I had originally reserved so I got stuck with another totally different class of car! They gave me a slight discount, pennies on the dollar compared to the charges. They have you by your neck if you pay ahead! So mind you I call the district office to lodge a complaint and hear nothing. Then I get this 142 additional fee for a tire replacement repair that should have been caught before I drove off the lot, because I didn't purchase the Emergency Roadside assistance and another 70+ fee for needing someone to come and change over to the spare because there was no jack in the trunk! NEVER EVER AGAIN WILL I RENT FROM AVIS. I left a message with the district (DISTRUST) office with no reply!!!!

Avis has a very bad client service!!! I thought I'd hire a car with a decent global company. Small companies have really better service. I hired a car in Fez, Morocco for 7 days. At arrival at the airport in Fez I wanted to pay the deposit with my credit card. The Avis man said I could use the credit card without my pin code. But it did not work. And I did not succeed to use my pin code. I called my bank but they could not help either. In the Avis papers there was no sign that I had to use the pin code of my credit card. I hired cars before abroad and it was never a problem! The Avis man had no alternative for me to pay the deposit, and advised me to cancel the reservation. It would be without costs for me because it did not work.
I called Avis and there was no alternative left. They said they needed a copy of the attempt I tried to pay the deposit, which I have. I hired another car at another office for much more money. After my holiday I called Avis about the cancellation. Guess what! They are going to let me pay three days car hire! This is such a bad service. I could not help it. They did not mention I had to use the pin code of my credit card. I'll suggest everyone to avoid this company. They just want to make money. They spoil your holiday with very bad service.

We were told a shuttle would be at the AVIS car drop off center to get us to the ship. Well when we arrived at the drop off center we were told that the 500+ other customers were also waiting on the shuttle and it was a long wait. They stated they had just 3 shuttles for Budget and Avis. So after more than an hour wait we had to hail a cab to ensure we got to the cruise ship as the ship was leaving soon. That cost us 25.00 us and it's all because AVIS Miami isn't equipped to handle the volume of customers.
So 7 days later when we arrived back at the port of Miami and started waiting for a shuttle the same issue arrived! So after more than an hour waiting and having a flight to catch we had to hail a cab - yep another 25.00 us. When we got to the car rental place they had no cars to give us even though we had a reservation. After another lengthy wait a car arrived and we barely squished the luggage into it but we did. Then an AVIS employee who was parking another rental back right into our rental causing damage and didn't even stop. We had to get another employee and show him so we didn't get hit with charges. We rented a Nissan Note in Guadeloupe, January 26 - February 2, 2017. At the airport terminal desk we were given paperwork (in French) to sign and initial without any further instructions or explanations. At 7:30 pm we were shuttled to the Avis location on the outskirts of the airport where we presented our paperwork. There was more confusion from the employees as to which car/key we were to receive. After all other customers received their keys we were finally given our key and a receipt. From there we were instructed to go to the parking lot behind the building to retrieve our car on our own. There was confusion among many customers as to which car would be their car and where the "code" was to be entered. We all found our cars by using the door lock/lights.
The lot was open, dark, with cars packed tightly together. We drove the car to the front of the office and loaded in our luggage in the rain. This was the procedure that all other customers followed while we were there. The passenger side was facing away from the office and in the dark. We took approximately 20 minutes to load up our luggage and prepare to leave. AT NO TIME did an employee leave the office to assist with the vehicle pick up. AT NO TIME were we given a form to fill out regarding the condition of the car. AT NO TIME did we sign off on the condition of the car. We were given one receipt (in French) which states nothing about the condition of the vehicle... They wrongly gave us another customer's receipt to make matters worse. We put the receipt in the glove compartment and did not look at it until drop off on the 2nd.
We drove the vehicle from the Avis location in Les Abymes to our rental villa in Deshaies. We drove directly to our villa and made no stops. During the trip we were not involved in an accident or incident. The vehicle was parked on the right hand side of a driveway area with bushes on the right side. Early the next morning we, and our travel companions, noticed the dent on the lower section of the passenger door. We naturally assumed the vehicle came with the dent since we just rented it and we're not involved in an incident. Upon returning the vehicle at the end of the week the counter assistant told us our car had already been returned. We stated that it had not and pointed to where our vehicle was parked for return.
At that point we discovered we had been wrongly given another customer's receipt. She spent quite some time trying to locate our contract and was very very agitated. She finally found our contract, which was stapled to a bunch of other contracts. Upon inspecting the vehicle we were told we had to pay for the dent. We refused to take responsibility for the pre-existing dent but were forced to pay a $40 incident fee just to get a shuttle to the airport before we missed our 8:00 am flight. We left without being given a copy of our original receipt or contract.
Friday February 3rd, I called Avis to request our receipt. They had a hard time locating it and stated it showed the rental still open. Finally a downloadable receipt was emailed to me later that afternoon. Avis Les Abymes has charged us $3248.97, on top of the rental fee, for a pre-existing very small dent that was obviously caused by another vehicle due to the angle. We believe this is a total scam. We have a dispute claim in with Avis, our bank and our insurance company.

My husband and 6 grown children recently visited Bryce, Zion, and Death Valley National Parks. We flew into Las Vegas and rented a large vehicle from Avis. Upon arrival to return the vehicle, we cleaned out the extra maps, papers, etc. that always seem to accumulate when on a road trip. The car did have some extra soil on the carpet, nothing that a quick vacuum would not take up easily. Despite the weather conditions, I thought the car was pretty decent and like I said, we all made an effort to brush off as much debris as we could, and took extra care to not track in any mud into the car. Avis on the other hand, felt we should have vacuumed the car and returned it clean.
We have had several trips like this to parks, beaches, hiking in woods, skiing, and not once has a car rental place questioned the condition of the interior. And believe me, when the kids were younger it was much more of an issue. Avis took it upon themselves to charge us $150.00 extra to clean the car! Never in my life have I heard of this. Last spring we decided to give Avis in Paris another chance. We arrived at the appointed time, only to be told that they didn't have our car. They asked if we would be willing to take another car at no extra charge. We agreed. We were asked about extra insurance which we always deny because we are covered by our credit card.
Upon returning the car we were told that the rental fee would be double what the original agreement was. When we asked why, we were told that we were being charged for an upgrade and insurance. We explained that we did not agree to either of those things. We were told that we would have to come back later as a manager was not there at that time to discuss it with us. We could not do that as we had a flight to catch.
When we returned to the US we disputed the bill with our credit card company. We were happy to pay the original amount, just not the extra charges. After months of fighting back and forth with Avis, we were told that it was their word against ours and we had to pay. I called Avis on two different occasions and two different reps gave me the same information, that I did not have a set date to return the car to Miami and the price will remain the same for a one-day rental period. My boyfriend and I rented a car from Vegas for a few days to tour the Grand Canyon. We rented a White Ford Edge and took pictures of any damage done before we got in the car to drive off to our destination. It was minimal, tiny scratches and dents, nothing too big. However just in case we always take pictures and I recommend to those who don't DO start to. We returned the car a few days later with a full tank of gas and not a scratch on it from us. We did notice that the rental agreement had the wrong automobile on the paperwork and did call Avis to tell them a few times and what car we did drive. We paid $394.74 and thought it was done with.
NO, NO, NO, NO... We got a letter 27 days later saying we damaged the car and that they would be charging our credit card for $518.54. They didn't give any damage details, pictures, explanation or anything. Just a letter saying that we were liable for some false damage and we would have to pay for it. So we called, MANY MANY times to discuss and dispute the letter and got a few nice people and a few extremely rude people. They told us the wrong gas had been put in the car and it was damaged. I had to explain to them we didn't rent the car on our agreement and that they had us in the wrong car. They never gave us much for details and couldn't really hold up their side of the bogus charges.
After all the hassle and red tape we got our money back. I had even made a call to my lawyers, maybe I should send them my bill. I can't believe this company is still in business. I know this is a scam they have done many many times. They should be shut down and investigated by the feds. SCAMMERS and DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS. I will never again. EVER!!!

Be careful with how Avis/Budget work currency conversion. I hired a car at Schiphol airport and accepted the 1750 euro excess. I have travel insurance to cover this excess so there was no need to take out the additional 100 euros to reduce this excess to zero. I scratched the car in a minor parking incident. On returning the car I explained I was happy to pay for the damage excess, but as I had given Avis a visa travel card loaded with pre-purchased euros for our trip to cover the rental cost, I wanted to use another credit card to pay for the excess. The returning officer completely ignored my request. I think he thought I was trying to avoid paying the excess. I suppose this happens sometimes. Anyway the end result was it was charged against my travel card then, and again the following night for second excess payment 1750 euros. Why. Who knows.
Here's the thing though, when I hired the car there was no mention of being charged in Australian dollars. Never. If there was I would have instructed them to charge me the euros I had pre-purchased. I have been ripped off this way before. What they did without my knowledge was charge me in Australian dollars using their own retail currency conversion rate. This currency conversion added 250 euros to the cost of this 2000 euro rental! I also incurred an addition 100 euros expenses in having to access cash from another source after they locked all the pre-purchased funds on my travel card with their double excess charge, one of which was refunded a week or so after the rental. The whole experience was a disaster. The response from Avis on the ground was disgusting. Never again.

Avis rental told us, when our plan was canceled, that we could drive to our destination instead and turn it in at that airport "no problem". When we got the bill a $500 (!) charge had been added for the change in drop-off, without any notice or explanation. Customer service agreed we should have been told in advance of this cost but was only able to reduce it to $350. In addition filling our tank from partially full to full added another $150 (!) to our bill. We are a "Preferred Member" in the Avis "Wizard" program! We now are looking for a better company.

We were asked to pay the towing charges of $130 out of our pocket and AVIS promised us that it will be reimbursed. Did follow-ups more than 10 times, but no luck. AVIS - If you cannot keep your promise then why you are giving your words??? The story is here: We rented a van (Ford Transit) from Avis Columbus, OH on 06/20/2016 and were heading towards Washington DC (IAD airport) to pick-up our families. We start from Columbus at 8:30 and middle of the day (around 12:00 PM) the van broke down and called the "roadside service". They instructed us to turn off the engine and wait for couple of minutes and turn it on. We did the same as instructed and it worked and drove another 15 miles and again the same engine problem started.
This time the turning off the engine and on did not help and we could not move the vehicle at all. So, again called the roadside assistance and they sent a towing truck through Pennsylvania authorities as were on Turnpike highway. The customer care person told us to pay the towing charges and send the receipt details to Avis for reimbursement. She confirmed this with Avis customer care person over the phone. By the time the 1st towing vehicle came it was 3:30 PM. Our family arrive at airport at 3:00 PM. The 1st tow truck dropped us off the turnpike and the 2nd tow truck came at 6:40 PM. Our family was already waiting for us over 3 hours and still we were middle of the whole way.
The 2nd tow truck took us to Hagerstown, MD (that's where they were instructed to take us to get a replacement vehicle). By the time we reached Hagerstown regional airport it was 8:30 PM and that location was closed by 6:00 PM. When we asked the same question to customer care (called around 5:30 PM) theyconfirmed us that they already informed the location supervisor and somebody would be waiting for us to get a replacement vehicle. We reached the Hagerstown at 8:30 PM and nobody was there to assist us. As the 2nd tow truck driver was instructed to take us to Hagerstown only so he unloaded the van from the truck and he was ready to return. Again we contacted the customer service and explained the entire details (told them that our families already landed and waiting for us at the airport) and they spoke to the tow truck driver again (for 40 mins).
Finally he got a confirmation to drive us to IAD Washington DC airport and he loaded the van again on his truck and drove us to IAD airport. After all the struggle we reached the AVIS location in IAD Washington DC airport at 11:30 PM. Our families with my toddler son & grandparents waiting at airport close to 9 hours after a long air travel. The AVIS person gave a replacement vehicle and which was bit smaller than we booked. So while returning we had to adjust so much and stuff the baggage to fit.

I agreed to pay for any damage caused to the vehicle however I did not damage the vehicle and AVIS budget have helped themselves to $1,400 from my credit card the moment the vehicle was returned.
I know this is a scam because of one specific Item. The vehicle inspector showed me a tiny chip on the inside of the passenger rear vision mirror. I examined the mirror carefully because of the chip. In AVIS's pictorial report there are scratches on the OUTSIDE of the mirror, and no stone chip. In my pictorial record the vehicle inspector is sitting inside the vehicle, and the mirror is completely unharmed. This is the "damaged" side of the vehicle and the mirror that had to be replaced. The moral of the story is don't accept a damaged vehicle from anyone, and don't think that photographs will help you. They've been no help to me.

They have most recently committed fraud against my checking account after I cancelled my rental and they waived the cancellation fee. They then debited my account for a weird amount of money. I get hung up on when being transferred.
They don't go out of their way to help the client understand the contract or policies. They don't have enough people working at their locations and the lines have been up to two hour waits! None of their phone reps speak English. In the USA we speak English. That is the native tongue. Just like in Italy it's Italian. I could really write a whole novel about this company. Weeks later Avis charged me roughly 3000$ to my credit card claiming the car had had damages to it. Months later I have not received any proof or as much as a description to what kind of damages the car allegedly had.
My e-mails to Avis customer service here in the States and in Finland were answered with claims that it had not been possible to send me the pictures proving the alleged damage by e-mail due to limitations of my e-mail account. This is entirely fabricated as I receive e-mails with large attachments to this e-mail account daily. Stay away from Avis rental car at Helsinki airport!!

I was rushing for a funeral and made a reservation in person at the airport Avis counter. Agreed to a decent daily price of $35, and went through a bunch of signatures, etc., as usual in any car rental. The rep seemed super nice, offered me a price discount owing to my rush and funeral distress, etc. Upon return I was charged an extra $89.97 for insurance. (I always reject such insurance.)
When I called Avis to inquire, I was informed that if a customer books at counter, they "must" charge for insurance. That's their model. Only way to avoid insurance is to book online. Phone agent said this fact was in my contract; well, it probably was buried somewhere in the 6 point font contract, which I got AFTER agreeing to the car, signing everything, etc. Bottom line: do not rent from Avis at counter. They will charge for insurance without asking you about it and without you requesting it, and you might assume that insurance was one of the things you declined in the multi-step signing process, but it's not! I rented a car from Avis using their website. This was for a car that I would pick up at an airport in Turkey and return to different airport in Turkey. Insurance was optional and I did not chose to purchase insurance because my visa card has insurance for the car rental. After arriving at the airport in Turkey the person behind the counter would not allow me to pick up the car without purchasing insurance. I explained that I did not want this and that my credit card policy covers the rental car. This was not an issue of language barrier because I speak the local language. They insisted that I purchase the insurance or they would not allow me to get the car. Having already paid for the car online I felt I had no choice but the purchase the insurance or else lose the money I had already paid. After returning to the USA I complained to Avis about this and asked for a refund of the insurance.
After I made many phone calls and waited 2 weeks they sent a very short email with only a few sentences and said that they find the charges to be correct without any farther explanation. I explained that this lack of explaining why they feel I was treated appropriately and should have been forced to purchase insurance is not acceptable. They asked that I wait while they review the issue again. 3 days later I received another very short email with the same explanation. I feel that I was treated unjustly and was forced to purchase something that I did not need. I also feel that Avis does not care to take time to fix this or explain to me why they feel that I should have been forced to purchase insurance for this rental. Extortion is the word that comes to mind. I was in a very difficult situation at an airport in a foreign country, picking up a car that I had already paid for and this situation was taken advantage of for profit. I will never use this company again.

Subsequent to my previous posting, I made contact with the manager in Rome and after explaining my dilemma, he allowed an additional credit of $327.00 to offset the excessive insurance charged to me. Although the total rental charge was still greater than what was quoted, I do feel some satisfaction to this problem. I may consider this company for future rental.

I am writing this to warn anyone considering a car rental through Avis Budget at the airport in Rome Italy to not do it. I recently rented from them and after receiving a quote for approximately $500, was charged over $1300. Unfortunately, it was due to my own lack of attention to detail and being awake for over 24 hours, but that is not an excuse for their lack of honoring the quotation I received prior to my trip. The agent at the desk added many unwanted extras to the agreement and being in a hurry to get to my final destination, I did not pay attention to what I was signing.
Upon returning the vehicle, the person at the desk was not very helpful with my issue and could not get a supervisor to help me. I contacted the US customer service group to seek help in getting some resolution to this overcharge, but except for a $69 credit, there was nothing that could be done. My advice to anyone considering using these people is find another rental agency or if you have the misfortune to use them, read the agreement carefully.

The manager in Avis refused to speak with me. The call handler disconnected the call. All I was offered was vouchers. Although I have had to select ‘quality of service’ I have in fact a number of complaints under the following multiple headings. Quality of Service, Wrong car grade provided, Poor quality of car. I shall now give full details under these headings.
Quality of Service: Long waiting time on arrival. On arrival at Tivat Airport, although only 3rd in the queue I had to wait more than 30 minutes to be served at the Avis counter. The reason for this apparently was that everyone was advised that they had been sold inappropriate insurance online. I also was so advised and had to buy appropriate insurance. I then had to ring RentalCars from Monte Negro to cancel my initial insurance. I spoke to a very helpful Dutch sounding call handler who canceled my original insurance.
I was not advised that in Montenegro headlights are required to be on even during daylight. I was not given a car with this as an automatic feature nor was I given the car with the headlights on with the advice that I should not touch this control. As a consequence I was stopped by the police 2 days later and was given a penalty of 34 euros. The policeman confiscated my driver’s license and told me to go to a bank in Herceg Novi, approximately 17 km distance to pay the penalty. He told me that he would be in the same place for about 3 hours afterwards. I went to Herceg Novi but could find no bank open. The whole undertaking took about 4 hours of my holiday. I was therefore unable to see him the same day.
He had however written down his telephone number with the advice for me to phone him when this penalty was paid. I paid the penalty of 34 euros plus 50 cents fee at the post office in Perast where I was staying the following day. At my request the post mistress kindly rang the policeman who advised her that I now had to go to Herceg Novi post office to get my drivers license. This was despite the fact that he had indicated to me that he would return it to me in person once the penalty was paid.
I therefore had to travel again to Herceg Novi. I eventually found the post office but my driver's license was not there. The clerk, who kindly rang the policeman again was informed by him that the license was in fact at the police station. I then had to walk across town to the police station and to then find the appropriate room. I was then given my driver's license back. This again took about 4–5 hours of my holiday. There was an extra requirement of fuel associated with these journeys of approximately 70 km. (17.5 km x 2, twice) In these circumstances I consider that Avis failed in their Duty of Care to me in that they did not advise me of something that I could not have anticipated and in the alternative did not provide me with a vehicle which would have avoided this problem. I therefore consider Avis fully liable for the subsequent problems and further complications arising.
Wrong car provided: I had deliberately requested a small car, a Chevrolet Spark. I knew that the roads in Montenegro were narrow and difficult. However when I checked in I was told that no cars were available in this size or class and I was given a much larger car, a Renault Fluence which is much more cumbersome and as I was quite correct in my assessment of Montenegron roads much more difficult and hazardous to drive. It also was more expensive in fuel consumption. As a consequence we did not dare to try the mountainous roads which although recommended for their beauty are also described as difficult with a need to reverse on winding mountainous roads if another car is encountered with insufficient room to pass each other.
When I rang RentalCars from Montenegro I also advised the helpful Dutch call handler of this problem too. She said that she would try to contract Avis in Tivat to see if they could exchange the car for a smaller one. She tried to phone them when I was on the phone. However she advised me that they were not answering the phone. I asked, and she agreed that if she were successful in contacting them afterwards she would email me on **. I did not get any further information or have any contact with her afterwards. Poor Quality of car: The car had multiple scratches and paint damage. There were cigarette stubs left in the ashtray from the previous user which I cleared out because of the smell. In the context of these multiple complaints I request that you fully compensate me for all of the issues identified in this complaint.

Avis is a scam of a company. I rented a car for one day, and returned it to a location with afterhours drop-off. I returned the vehicle—undamaged--and deposited the key in the key deposit box. I received a call the next day saying the vehicle hadn't been returned--so I drove by the drop-off place and saw the same car in the lot. I called them and according to them, the vehicle was in their records and they assured me everything was fine and they had a record of the car being in the lot. A few months later, I got a charge of almost $6k from Avis, and when I called them, apparently the car had been found abandoned in another city. They never even notified me before making this charge, although the vehicle was stolen off of their property. Honestly, I suspect that it was an inside job and probably an Avis employee stole the car knowing they could get away with it and charge an innocent customer.
I have filed a dispute with my bank and filed a police report, and dealing with Avis has been absolute hell. I finally got them to admit that because I had rental insurance, I was not at fault for the incident, but they have still not removed the charges. They cannot seem to keep track of the incident details, and are an absolute mess to deal with. I know that they knew the car was returned, and I even told them I saw it in the lot, and had verification that they also had the car in their system!!
They have all of the evidence--the key should have been logged in the system. They have security footage, and presumably the record of the phone call, but they just don't even care and/or are so disorganized that they cannot keep track of their own vehicles and just feel free to charge their customers thousands of dollars for doing nothing wrong. It has been ridiculous to deal with this company--whether they intentionally did this to steal from a customer. I don't know, but they have completely taken advantage of the situation and have done nothing to help rectify it. Never, ever again would I use this company!! They are absolute criminals.

We rented a car from Avis in September. My husband is not use to a key fob or keyless start, so when we dropped off the car he forgot to give the gal checking us in the key. The gal checking us in did NOT ask for the key for the vehicle, which in my opinion she wanted us to not turn it in. So we get on the plane and my husband remembers that he has the fob. Immediately when we got home I tried to call Avis, I called multiple times but I could not get anyone on the phone. I then decided to e-mail the company to tell them that we would be mailing them back. In the meantime, after no response from e-mail, I UPS'd the keys to AVIS. Then several days later they e-mail me back saying that it was too late and they already charged my credit card an extra $283.12 for the keys.
I then called my credit card company to dispute this. Then finally a couple months later they say that they had to make the key so there was nothing they would do for us. I think that is crap, because every vehicle has 2 sets of keys. I tried to tell this company that we were sending the keys back but no one answered the phone. I believe we were scammed, especially since the gal checking us in didn't even ask for the key fob, isn't that her responsibility to get them back. How did they move the vehicle then if they had no key? I'm so pissed that they were so unwilling to work with us on this. The pamphlet says they MAY charge you if you don't return the keys. I rented a car in France in August from Avis. In September I got a letter from Avis saying that during my rental I got fined and they had passed my details to the issuing organization, who would notify me the fine. For passing those details they were billing me 175 € (!!!) for administrative fees. When I received the letter the money had already been taken from my account but after over a month I have not been notified by the French authorities about any fine. Avis has taken my money and I still do not know whether I have actually been fined. Having had past experience of Avis billing a friend for not refuelling while refuelling had duly occurred, now I think they billed me for a ticket that I never earned. 175 € should at least cover the cost of producing evidence of the existence of this fine. Nobody should be allowed to take my money without evidence of their claim to it.

When I hired a car at Lisbon airport using a prepaid voucher over the summer, I was given an Alfa Romeo and it car broke down after a week, with mechanical failure. They came to pick up faulty car and I had to travel all the way back to Lisbon from Obidos to pick up a replacement. I carried on my holiday and a week later returned my second car, full of diesel and it passed inspection. Imagine my shock when 6 weeks later I get a letter from Avis with a €1600 bill to be charged to my credit card for Accident repairs, Surcharges and extra mileage. This is nothing short of fraudulent behaviour and is a disgrace. I will not be paying and will seek legal advice. I will never be using Avis again. Anyone else had a similar experience with Avis?

This place is a joke. I reserved a vehicle on the 8th prepaid for the rental. Was supposed to pick up the vehicle on the 16th at 10 am. Got to the location only to find out they were closed for good. Contacted Avis customer service and told that location had closed on the 11th. Was given a huge run around and by 2 pm I had no choice but to cancel. I was told I would receive full refund only to receive an email stating I will be charged $150.

Reserved car for pick up. We had prepaid and called that morning to confirm our reservation. Upon our arrival car was not ready but we could go pick it up at an alternative location if we were interested. This was after they made us come back in an hour. They guaranteed the car would be at the alternative location when we got there. Why the car had to go to an alternative location first - I have no idea. This was in San Antonia so not a small city. Drove to the new location and as expected the car was not there but we were assured vehicle would be in in 15 minutes.
After a half an hour, the rep indicated the vehicle had not even left the prior drop off location AND the drop off location was totally different (and much further away) then both reps at both locations had indicated. Not reflected in the above is that the agents at both location continually misrepresented the circumstance and we caught them up in their misrepresentations. We had an 8 hour drive that day and did not arrive at our final destination till very late. We ended up cancelling our reservation and going to another party to rent a car. The agents were totally indifferent and rude. I will NEVER use Avis in the US again.

50 miles into our extensive drive to San Jacinto, Ecuador from Guayaquil airport our car experienced major power issues. Due to this fact, our car completely broke down when we had arrived. It would not 'turn on' nor show any signs of 'turning over' when the key was in the ignition and in the On position. We then had to walk approximately 2 miles to our hotel on a less traveled dirt road with no chance of hailing a taxi or asking for assistance. We are seniors and both have serious back issues that prevented us from walking normally and caused us severe distress and much hardship during our vacation. We lost a full day while on our short overseas 4 day vacation. Not only did we miss a pertinent meeting, we 'lost' a golden opportunity to purchase our new home in Manta, Ecuador.

To anyone wishing to hire a car while abroad I would strongly advise you not to hire from Avis Car Hire. I came home to an unexpected bill of £180.00 which they took straight from my bank account without my knowledge. To add insult after I complained I noticed several other complaints all of the same nature. When asking the company to address the complaint all I got was more hassle and more attitude from customer services. I hired the car for my disabled foster son to get about on holiday and have been left out of pocket for insurance I never claimed on. Disgusted and disheartening to say the least. Stay clear of Avis when hiring your car.

I rented a diesel car at Avis London Heathrow. The documents clearly stated that the car was a diesel and it was verbally reconfirmed when I left the lot. Upon returning the car, I stopped at a gas station and asked them to fill the tank with diesel which they did. One month later, I saw on my credit card statement that I had been billed more than twice the agreed amount by Avis. When calling customer service, I was advised that had damaged the car with the wrong fuel. I sent the agreement, where it is clearly stated that the vehicle is a diesel, and with that the receipt from the petrol station where diesel was also noted. Many months have passed, and every time I call, I am being advised that this is still under review. I find this to be terrible service and do not recommend anyone to use AVIS as a result.

As far as the car is concerned, the car was a quality car that did not let us down. The ride to and from the airport was pleasant and uneventful. But after I had booked, via Priceline, I found out they had chosen Avis. I read the reviews, and read the same complaints over and over... and those complaints all mentioned getting charged after-the-fact for things that never should have been deducted.
In my case, we were charged for "toll roads" that we never took. We purposely avoided them, due to the exorbitant fees they would charge if you used one. One day, we even drove about 25 miles out of our way to avoid the toll road. Yet when I returned home, my credit card was dinged for $26.00 and change for "tolls roads" we never took. They have my 26 bucks, but they won't be my go-to rental place any longer (along with the other places they have acquired). Such a shame that they feel they must scam their customers instead of just leaving a good experience to maintain a loyal following. :(

During the month of May 2016, our insurance company (ABSA) rented an Avis car for us while our car was being repaired. The collection date was 03/05/2016 under the surname: ** and it was provided by the Somerset West branch. When I returned the car the following week, I was told that the spare wheel was flat. I was in a hurry and I said but I never even looked at the spare wheel. I never had a need to change a tyre during the few days that I used the silver Polo Vivo. The attendant said I must just write on the form that the spare was never checked which I duly did and we went off. Some time later, a charge of R1183.80 was taken off our credit card. I went back to the agency in Somerset West and they could or would not give me any information since their "system was down." They would not phone anyone or offered any assistance. They said that they would investigate and come back to me.
At that time I also spoke to the manager, Mr. Duane ** and he did not have any knowledge of the case but would investigate. I also contacted the insurance agent and they also enquired. We never got any response from Avis or from this agency. After a few weeks I went again to inquire and they claimed to have called which was not true. Then they said that someone else was supposed to call. Then Mr. ** knew more about the case and he said that the attendant showed him the care and the tools were loose in the car. He indicated the place where the car was standing and it was on the opposite side of where I had left the car. Mr. ** tool my details and later sent an email to say that it was insufficient information. The insurance broker sent more information then.
I received an email from Mr. ** with the following content: "Good day Mr. **, I have spoken to the Manager at the workshop. We have come to an agreement to credit the damage charges. There will be no charge to you for the damaged tyre. REF:**. Thank you for taking the time to bring this matter to our attention, it is greatly appreciated." I informed him that the amount was deducted already and when can we expect a refund. Immediately after I sent this, Mr ** sent another email as follows: " Good day Mr. **, Please ignore my previous emails. This was sent in error. I am still busy with your damage dispute and will get back to you in due time."
I was sent a tax invoice by Mr. ** in the name of Avis fleet for the amount of R779.65. It is unsigned and of no legal value whatsoever. I find this totally unacceptable. There are several things that indicate gross negligence and corruption: 1. How can an allegation like this be made when I know that there was absolutely no damage to the car. 2. How can the alleged damage be escalated from a flat tyre to a totally destroyed tyre? 3. How can a tyre cost that much? 4. How can the manager first know nothing about it and later affirm that he had been informed and saw the damage with his own eyes? 5. How can the car be standing in a completely different place when this claimed investigation was done? 6. How can I be promised to be informed of the damaged and nothing is done? 7. How can I be informed that there will be no charges and when I want the money back, it was changed again? 8. How can the amount change like that?
I find this very disturbing since there is a serious error and a total indifference on the part of the Somerset West branch or this is a matter of blatant corruption. I want to mention that I am writing this to Avis for the last time. I do not intend it to rest for much longer. It will go to social media and I will take legal action as I am 100% sure that I am in the right. Needless to say, I could never think of using your services again unless this is resolved satisfactorily. Some of the above is old already as I do not get any response from Avis. The bottom line is that they took the money, lied several times and the manager at the Strand is protected by Avis. This is perhaps a reflection of the state of corruption in South Africa but not acceptable.

The reason for this review is to warn others of the cunning and deceitful tactics that Avis uses to overcharge their customers. My husband and I booked a car online on the Avis website in July this year. The car was to be picked up at Malaga airport in Spain. The cost was 340.43 Euros for 6 days. We ended paying 791.28 Euros. It was after 10.00 pm and the person behind the Avis desk at the airport knows that at this time of night the customers are tired and in a hurry to get to their destination and here is how the scam works:
First the smiling girl tells us that they have not got the car that we have reserved. "But please do not worry. We will let you have a better car at no extra charge." We agree. She then produces a contract written very small in Spanish and tries to sell us an extra insurance for 100 Euros per day. This would have added 600 Euros to our original cost of 340.42 Euros. My husband told her that it was unreasonable and declined. She does not give up and speaking quite fast she tells my husband that in case of collision or theft he would have to pay a minimum of 1600 Euros. She points this out on the agreement but as my husband declines again, she circles the 1600 Euros excess and asks him to initial it as a disclaimer that he has been warned. She then asks him to initial all sorts of figures on the Spanish document telling him the things he would be liable for.
My husband puts his initials to these various figures in good faith. He asks her if he could have an English copy, which she provided and asks him again to initial in the same places. My husband initialed freely without fully understanding as we were keen to get on with our journey. She also seemed in a hurry to get rid of us. The last thing my husband said to her was: “What do we do about the fuel?” She replied with a big smile on her face: “Just fill the car up when you return it”. We understand now the reason for the big smile. She had just cheated us of 450.85 Euros contributing nicely to her commission. A few days after we got back home we realised that Avis had withdrawn 450.84 Euros from our credit card. We thought it was a mistake. It was! OUR mistake and their deceitful cleverness.
We then looked closely at the agreement and realised that we had been charged 363 Euros for an upgrade of the car from Group C to Group G which she said would be at no extra charge! And to add insult to injury the real cost of such an upgrade (we checked on their website) should have been about 50 Euros. She also sneaked in a charge of 51.55 Euros for something called Fuel upfront option – we did not know what that was, we checked on their website. This is an option for returning the car without refueling it. We never requested that option and she distinctly said to refuel the car before returning it, which we duly did.
We have tried through our credit card and through Avis customer services to get our money back but did not get anywhere. As a last attempt, I tried to plead with their customer service department asking them why we had been charged so much for the upgrade, when on their website there was only a difference of about 50 Euros. Guess what? We had agreed the figures and signed the contract so... They could not do anything. We just want to advise anybody dealing with Avis to be very vigilant, to be wary of any upgrade offered when you collect the car and to check thoroughly the contract document before you initial or sign anything, even if you are tired and in a hurry to go. Needless to say that we will never, never use Avis again.

I booked a compact car for our 10 days' trip but got a Mini Cooper at YXX Intl Airport in British Columbia, Canada. Just for people who haven't noticed the difference, a compact car can seat 5 passengers while a small car can only seat 4. So Mini Cooper obviously falls into small car category. Unfortunately the agent insisted that it is a compact car and we had to squeeze into it with our 8 pieces of bags (we drove to Seattle for a cruise trip).
The prices of renting a small car, a compact car and a mid-size car are about the same. I booked a compact car only because based on my thousands of car rental experience, there was never a problem of it. But this is way too much. We were extremely disappointed and frustrated as you can imagine four adults (including my elder parents) sitting in a two door Mini Cooper for long road trips. I'll never rent Avis car or rent through Priceline again. I just don't understand how people can take it so easy while they have obviously broken the business contract.

We rented a car to travel for 15 days by the United States and when arrived at the office of Fisherman's Wharf San Francisco we were attended by two very unpleasant employee and we were told that there was no GPS around San Francisco and could not give us any solution (they suggested us to go to buy a GPS in a mall). After an absolutely nasty treatment AVIS Employees told us to ask for a car with GPS in the office next door, HERTZ, whose treatment was amiable and GPS was available for renting. Before canceling the reservation we asked AVIS if there was some kind of penalty as the entire amount of the vehicle was already paid by us and AVIS Employees confirmed us in a very bad way that AVIS will return the whole the amount we already have paid (€ 731).
They also did not want us to serve more as other customers had arrived to the office and despite the rude and unprofessional treatment we finally got a valid cancellation contract. What is our surprise that after more than two months, it is not only that AVIS did not return our money yet, the worse part is that AVIS now refusing to return it (remember that the office confirmed us the money will be return and we did not even see the car or take the keys) so we are clearly talking about a scam in the making. We have made several claims through both office AVIS customer and through our bank, but so far they have not succeeded. Considering that we had traveled over 20 hrs, and we were extremely exhausted, we decided we'd take the car they offered. When we saw the car, it was dirty inside and out, and we noticed it had over 67,000 miles. Once the hood was opened, the mechanic discovered the engine was drenched in oil, and the dip stick was not secured in its proper place! Fatal injury could have occurred!! The car could have caught on fire, or we could've been stranded! Upon returning home we contacted Avis, and told them what had happened. When I returned the vehicle on Sept. 3, I was given a bill for $251.67. I questioned the total and was told that was the charge based on a $20 per day rate. The vehicle check-in attendant could not comment on any coupon offer. I had to board a plane and chose to follow up after returning home. I called the Avis Denver office on Sept. 6, and a customer service rep told me the coupon discount I was given was $5 off a $25 per day upgrade for a standard-size SUV.
I asked to speak to a customer service manager and was told a manager would call me back. I was not called back on Sept. 6 and a call back to the Denver office today only resulted in a ringing phone, unanswered Sept. 7. I then sent an email explaining the whole situation to the Avis on-line customer service web contact portal. The reply received Sept. 12 offered this generic response: "Unfortunately with the information provided and the signed contract we are unable to make any adjustments."
I am not disputing that I have to pay for the upgrade. We complained about that and the guy at the desk agreed to change the car, but said we needed to sign a new contract for this other car. We did so and happily left the airport. However, when we returned the car after a two weeks rental we were charged approximately EUR 780 and since then we struggled to figure out why. Apparently, our contract included full insurance – although we explicitly said we were happy with the franchise, did not want full insurance and the initial contract did not provide for it. Our mistake was that we did not check for the changes and signed the papers, but de facto we were cheated by the person at the desk who added services we did not request.

We had booked with Avis to rent a largish car (to fit a bike in) at Denver airport last weekend and arrived at the office about 7 pm to find a very long queue of very unhappy people. After we'd waited for an hour or so, a guy came in and half-heartedly apologized and mentioned 10 zip cars on offer without much explanation, and said he'd been trying all day to get more staff.
Still we queued and about 9.30 pm got to the desk. Eventually we were allocated a car and went out to the car park to find an empty space (and not many cars left by this time). Back in for another try, but the same thing happened again. Third time after another long wait, we were promised a car straight from the car wash. Three hours in all - this after a 9 hour flight and for us it was 5 am! Staff were also being quite unprofessional about each other.
We didn't get the car we ordered but it is fine - however there is no manual and we don't even have a clue if it takes petrol or diesel. The agent told me I DIDN'T have a reservation. He asked for the pickup location. I told him it was on west poplar ave, Collierville TN. The agent told me no Avis was located at this location. I got off the phone very upset.
Called back and spoke to another agent and she was able to find my reservation with no problem. I was running late to pick up the car rental. My reservation was to pick up at 8:00 am. I arrived at 8:40 am. The vehicle WASN'T ready!! I was told the vehicle needed a oil change. The vehicle also had to be driven from the airport which is about 30min from the location where I was picking up the vehicle. I ask the agent want can he do for this inconvenience? He said "Nothing he can do." I asked for a manager or supervisor. I was told no supervisor was there.
He was on vacation. I asked for a number to call and file a complaint. I was given the registrations phone number (wrong number to file complaint). I looked online to find the information to file a complaint. While waiting I called customer service about 9:10 am from my phone number. I couldn't understand the agent due to a language barrier. I ask agent for her name twice. She answered and I didn't understand her. Asked her for her name and she said "Not able to hear customer". Then she hung up!! She heard me because she repeated her name twice.
The driver finally arrived at about 9:30 am. Went to inspect vehicle and the exterior was very dirty. The interior was dirty. Bugs on dashboard. Popcorn was on the floor and the rear seats. The agent offered to clean van. I told him no because I was already running late. I went home and cleaned the windows and mirrors, and I also removed the bugs that was on the dashboard. Later that day found that the rear seat smelled like URINE!! I made several attempts to give Avis the opportunity to make it right. I returned the car 20 min. Late and I was charged a late fee. When I get to LAX I have to go to the counter to get my car and gave the agent my contract. The agent talked me into an upgrade which was fine, it was $15.00 for one 24 hour period. But then they charged, my credit card twice. Apparently the amount they charged me the first time didn't account for the LDW and the roadside service I accepted since I was driving out of Los Angeles. Then I also signed up for prepaid gas. The verbiage on the website and what the agent explained to me at the counter was that they would only charge me for the number of gallons needed to fill the car at the local cost. That would have been $10.00 for approximately 3 gallons of gas which was the most the car would have needed to bring the tank to full.
What they really do is charge you for a whole tank of gas regardless of what is needed to bring the tank to full. They don't tell you that you need to save receipts to account for the amount of gas you pay for. So bottom line have your attorney read the contract because they will take you at every opportunity. My bank offered me Avis points. I decided to spent for my holidays in Scotland with my three daughters. It was the first time I rent a car with Avis, as I usually use take the rental offers that come with the air plane company, e.g. Air France, British Airways and sometimes RyanAir. Because my daughters came with me, I explicitly asked on the phone, a simple family car, type mini MPV (car group "D"), and I obtained confirmation I will have one. I also asked for a manual gearbox.
I prefer a comfortable car for long distance, rather than sports or fancy cars, especially when travelling with children. The other option I believe is important is GPS, as it helps to focus on the road when visiting an unknown place, and remove one possible stress source. Unfortunately, I found their offer overpriced compared to the competitors, and I decided to use my phone instead. It finally worked well enough for my needs.
When I arrived in Glasgow, the type of car I ordered was not available, and the office clerk decided to rent me another type of car, which was more an estate car with an automatic gearbox, despite my concerns and the low interest I expressed in this type of car. I expressed my concerns to the staff in the parking as well, and they told me I was "lucky" to have this type of car, and I should be happy.
I found the car - a ford Mondeo automatic - extremely modern for me, and it took me some time to even understand how to start it. The local employee on the parking was not helpful at all. Each response I could obtain from him was "I don't know", and he finally said he did not understand English very well. I drove without any problem for a few miles, until the front left tire suddenly gone flat after driving behind a truck that lost some nails. I had to continue to drive until finding a safe area to stop, which was a bus stop, a few yards later.
Calling the support line took about one hour, and no tire replacement specialist was available. I finished by calling the agency in Glasgow directly, and the AA came to change the tyre with the spare one I already took out. The speed limit with the spare one was not an option to pursue my journey to North Scotland, so I came back to the agency in Glasgow.
I finally obtained a smaller vehicle from a very professional and understanding office clerk, who was clever enough to comprehend the situation very quickly. I finally left the place with the new car, the type of car I wanted initially, although automatic. This car has been perfect for the four days of holidays, and I had no problem at all with it.
However, the agency in Glasgow charged me with a significant amount of money that was not planned in my budget, just because the initial car was exchanged, as the insurance taken with them covered the tire replacement only. After talking with an couple at the time I rent my car, I had the feeling that it was common for this agency to give their customers different car they asked for, in order to charge them.

Also they have now charged my account with 569.36 Euro double the estimate value. They ignore emails to customer services and ignore emails to any other customer service department. Abysmal service. Suggest using Hertz who operate an excellent service. They take advantage of overseas people except my address in overseas but English. Small claims court will be my next step.

I would like to warn consumers about the sharp practices a smart of policy by Avis car rental. I previously hired from them about ten years ago and had a very bad experience but thought I would try again this summer. We booked car rental through British Airways and it seemed a very good price. For pick-up in Nice we had a "Group D-Peugeot 508 or similar". That "or similar" covers a multitude of sins. Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection was supposed to be included. Once we arrived at Avis in Nice there was a long slow queue despite the fact that we were supposed to have a firm time to collect the car.
Then Avis only had Group D in manual rather than automatic. They offered to upgrade to Group F automatic. The upgrade would cost as much as the total booking for the Group D vehicle had cost when booked with BA originally. Then they charged a significant extra for the CDW, stating that the one we had booked only covered up to 1,500 Euros. So if the car had substantial damage, and if any car with which we had an accident was likewise damaged, the full cost of all repairs would be to your account.
Then they charged an extra fee for the fact that we were returning the car to a different office from where we were picking it up (Marseille rather than Nice) even though this had been as originally contracted with BA. Then they tried to charge us extra for insurance for any windscreen damage. They charged us a one-off fee for "vehicle license fee". I could not find out what that was for.
It was not just as Nice that Avis were dishonest of course. When we returned the car at Marseille, so the whole process of extra charges began again. We made the mistake of not returning with a full tank, and were charged Euros 28.50 for about 1/5 of fuel tank not full. The actual cost in fuel would have been approximately Euros 10. On top of that they charged a fee of Euros 10.82 for the fact of having to fill the tank themselves, as though many people can return a car with 100% full tank. So now I know that over this ten year period the dodgy practices and lack of ethics of Avia have not changed at all.

Reserved a rental car online for our weekend trip to Vegas. Got to the counter, everyone looked put-out to be there. They told us about insurance. We asked the lady about 3 times if the price she was quoting for the insurance included the moneys we already paid. She said yes! Every time, she said yes! We expected an extra $25 on our bill, no big deal. When we looked at our credit card statement, we found that they charged us an EXTRA $105. The price she was telling us was on top of the $90 we already paid! Talk about heated. Don't worry, they won't refund you any of it when you try and explain either.

Bad customer service. Gave me the wrong car in the parking lot, waited online to get another car and then added a "hidden fee" for RSN at $6.99 which I didn't realize 'til after I return the car. During the return process, The check-in lady didn't update the paperwork so the checkout guy had to update the correct car model, plate, etc on the paperwork and printed me a new agreement. Didn't realize he added RSN till afterwards.

When questioning it I received an email saying that it was a speeding fine with an additional 30 administration charge. The car in question had the same three letters but different numbers and was a completely different make and model. This would appear to be a scam that Avis use and hope that people don't notice the extra charge on their credit card or if they do, they assume it's part of the rental agreement. I am a very frequent customer. I turned in my car yesterday at the Atlanta airport rental center. There was nobody there to check in the cars so as the sign says, I left the keys in the car and they will send you a receipt. I did not get a receipt so I called Avis customer service who told me to call the location directly but they do not answer the phone. Called back Avis and they said that they could not help so I asked for a supervisor who listened and then just put me on hold and never came back. No receipt, missing car in their garage, no customer service. I contacted Avis by e-mail and got a message back that says they will contact me within 24 to 72 hours. Do not rent from this organization unless you want the runaround. Also they started a new program. If you buy gas and fill it up they still charge you 7 dollars and change because you did not buy it from them.

We rented a car for one week at considerable expense from Avis at Los Angeles Airport in July 2016. The line was out the door and we had to wait in the hot sun for quite a while until we got into the building. After an hour we reached an agent. Our car was supposed to be in spot Q20, but there was no car there. I waited until my husband came out with a new spot, but there was no car there, either. Finally, after waiting a long time, we were given a soaking wet car. (When the drops dried, the car looked like it had the measles.) There was no manual to help us figure out how to use any of the features in an unfamiliar car. The agent looked at us like we were nuts when we asked him for a map, and then wrote down incorrect directions to our hotel.
I called the customer service number and when I finally got to talk to a person, he told me that it was the wrong number. He gave me the customer service number, which was the same number I had just called. The second time I called, I was disconnected. The third time I spoke to 4 people until I got a "customer service" agent who listened to my story and then asked me, "What do you want me to do about it?" No apology. He said the best he could do was give us a $62.50 credit which would come through in "3-5 days."
After a week, I called again and was told that the credit was pending and that we should check again in 3-5 days. A few days later, I sent feedback on the website. I received a response thanking me for my comments and telling me that it would help them do better in the future. Am I the first person to ever complain? What about all of the past complaints? They haven't helped. I called the company and heard a message saying I could fill out a form for further review. I filled it out and have received several responses saying that the $62.50 credit was fair. WE WILL NEVER RENT FROM AVIS AGAIN!!!

I typically rent from Budget and have Fast Break service. But Budget was out of cars so I rented through Avis and registered for their "Advantage" service - same type service as Fast Break. When I got on shuttle at Denver airport shortly after noon on July 27th, driver made no effort to help anyone with their bags. Me and others helped women with children and elderly load heavy bags. When I got to the airport, I asked driver to drop me at Advantage check in. He told me to enter Main Building. I saw Advantage sign and went there. After 15 minute wait, I was rudely told I was at the wrong place, and employee pointed to a general direction.
After wandering for awhile, I found the Advantage office. Had three employees with no customers. Meet with a "what do you want" attitude. Asked for Advantage number, which appeared nowhere on my reservation. Asked them to look it up, and after the eye roll was told I was not an advantage member, to go back and stand in line. I told them I had appointment at AF Academy for my son at 4 pm and would miss it if I had to stand in hour-long line. Clerk (Mona) said, "Want to cancel your reservation?" When I asked how that would help, she merely pointed towards the building with an hour long line.
My secretary called Avis, and obtained my Advantage number after about 20 minutes, and I went back to the Advantage office with three idle attitude employees, and got a car. The main office had 12 windows, but only three were staffed. I would be embarrassed to work for such a lousy company. And apparently those employees with pride have quit, leaving it staffed with "I don't care" employees like Mona. I will never use Avis again.

I rented a car from Avis for a week while my car was in the shop. I rented from the Conshohocken, PA location which is a neighborhood location. I made the appointment for 8 am as I have to be to work at 9. I arrive at 8 and no one is at the counter. I wait for a half an hour saying "hello is anyone there". I would have left but I prepaid for the rental because they offer a discount if you prepay. I had to walk around back to get the lady that was working while she was washing a car. Why would you wash a car if you know you have a customer coming now. Now I am rushing because I am late to work. I reserved a compact vehicle and she gave me a Toyota Corolla which is an intermediate size. I thought I was being upgraded because of my troubles.
I am a preferred customer and since I prepaid she handed me the contract and I left. I get in the car and immediately drive off. I notice the car is dirty. As I'm driving the car isn't driving correctly. I look and the car has 40k miles on it. I call the office and tell her the problems I am having with the car. She says bring it in and she will give me a Nissan Sentra. I tell her I will come on my lunch break.
On my lunch break I drive there. When I arrive they tell me they have Kia Rio available. I tell them that is an economy car and I did not pay for an economy car so I don't want it. She tells me it's an compact. I've been renting for years I am very familiar with the car classes. She becomes very rude and says take the Rio or keep the Corolla. I ask "why can't I get the Sentra?" She says because it's an intermediate and they don't have any compact cars. So is the Corolla. What's the difference. I don't have time to debate with her because I am on my lunch break.
I take the Corolla back and call their customer service. I ask them what class is the Kia Rio they tell me an economy. I proceed to tell them my situation. They instructed me they should have just swapped to the Sentra. The office closes at 6 and I don't leave work until 5:30. I have to pick my son up after work, no way I would make it. Now I have to drive all the way to the Philadelphia International Airport to drop the car off which is 25 miles away highway in a car I don't feel safe driving with my son. I will never go back to this location.

It was too late to turn back, so we kept driving through temperatures in the low 100s, while I attempted to contact the service center. After at least 5 minutes of navigating the ridiculous automated menu and saying "representative", in hopes of speaking with a human, I was finally connected to a woman who said that she was with Budget, not Avis, and hung up on me. We were covered in sweat and I got a raging migraine headache.
We looked on Google maps and located an Avis location in Redlands CA. The counter agent, Mark, listened to our story and said there was nothing he could do. He did, however let me use the phone, and after going through the same horrendous automated system, each person I finally did speak with said they could not help me and passed me to another department until I had to begin the whole process over again. After speaking to four people, everyone of them who refused to help (this took over 30 minutes), my husband and I finally left - in disgust. I would like to share with everyone how incredibly disappointed and disgusted I am with AVIS CAR RENTAL. It appears that even if you say no to an upgrade or extra insurance, that doesn't mean they won't try and put in there and try to get away with it. And once you are out the door you are completely out of luck because nobody at this company cares. I was charged $237.56 two weeks ago for an upgrade. So I went back to see if they had done that to me before. Sure enough! May 20th 2016 $218.66 for an upgrade and November 19th $211.19 for insurance.
All my reservations were made on Priceline but they charged my card that I had to give when you pick up the car. The first person I talked to told me I would get a callback the next day. Didn't happen. The second Avis rep wouldn't escalate my call and ended up hanging up on me. I posted on their FB site. They told me they would like to help me more and to send them an email. They deleted my post and sent me a copy and past response. Thanks AVIS! Way to stand behind what appears to be crooked employees.

I will NEVER use this rental company again. My experience was beyond TERRIBLE. The first car I picked up, didn't even get 2 miles down the road, flat tire. Called roadside, sat at a gas station for almost 4 hours waiting, that's because they sent someone from another state to change a tire!!!! Now today, I was informed (over 3 weeks after returning the car) I am paying for that tire. They took the money out of my account without notice, now I am overdrawn. The second car I picked up, in the next city over, half way to my destination, "change engine oil soon" light came on.
The customer service was awful at both locations, with the exception of one young gentleman at second location. I called there to speak with him, maybe he could help me, suggest something, someone to talk to, even though I did already talk to a very unhelpful supervisor. Well, he's no longer employed there, no surprise (mean that in a good way, probably couldn't handle all the complaints, he's the only one that bent over backwards for customers). So, single mother, waitress, took me a year to save to go on my vacation (to see my new grandson), can't even afford to put tires on my own car right now, not only paying for a tire I had nothing to do with it going flat, my account is overdrawn, the NSF funds piling up, no light at the end of this tunnel.
So, thank you Avis for not only one of the worst experiences in my life, and now the negative bank account that just gets higher every day. NEVER, EVER, again. I honestly don't understand how you're still in business, even though you're nationwide, multi-million dollar company, I would think eventually your reputation will catch up. I read through some reviews, there's not too many people that have good experiences with your company, more bad than good. It's a shame, I live in Indiana, have family in Florida (new grandbaby) so I will be going there as often as I can, but I will not be renting a car from Avis, never again. I cannot submit my review without a rating, even though 1 star is "Very dissatisfied" you don't deserve even that, my experience was that bad.

There, it took 3 people who were not of knowledge about the new system to tell me that they never saw or heard of the system. The so-called regional manager (Steve) that was on duty that night was the worst of all!!! Here in Illinois a new system was put into place May 17, 2016 for drivers and the likes!
There will no longer be permanent license or identification cards on the spot! There is a security process that is done before the consumer receives the hard plastic copy via mail, which would come in at least 14 days! The consumers are issued a temporary license or ID card on paper, with STATE SEAL, water mark proof as well as the matching information from the previous state issued license! Instructions are there also. This system is in effect in Illinois, so why are people so un-informed! I am very disappointed because of the car-fare spent chasing NO GO's!!! I among quite a few others have been charged for 10 gallons of fuel after returning my car full. TAKE NOTE THIS IS A ONGOING SCAM ADOPTED BY THIS AVIS RENTAL FIRM. Photograph your speedo on return if you have to use them. This way we got our money back. This was our letter of our issue with Avis and picture of fuel gauge. I am writing to you to let you know how disgusted I am with the fraudulent charge of nearly £85, I have received when hiring a vehicle from your Denver department.
On returning our vehicle after a 21 day hire, we waited until we were met by one of your employees who was checking the vehicles back in. He checked that there was no damage and that we had a full tank of fuel and a receipt for fuel purchased 3 miles away at Conoco on 7680 Peña Blvd, Denver, CO 80249. was shown to him. He said to us there were no issues and we were good to go! We took pictures of the speedo with the engine running and idling at 800 r.p.m which clearly shows the fuel tank completely full, the then current mileage, also the time and date. We also have pictures of our Sat nav’s journey breakdown. When I contested this with proof, they tried to fob it off as a training issue but a few recent reviews also have the same training issues!!!

I inquired if all was in order with everything and was told yes. Upon reviewing my receipt, inside the depot with the agent, I again inquired if all was in order and was told yes. My reason for inquiring twice is because upon my arrival to pick up the car the same agent had given me an incorrect rental agreement.
Upon reviewing it I made mention and she fixed the error which almost cost us an additional $400. Now I get back, return the car full of gasoline, as the receipt shows, and we identified prior to leaving the depot, that everything is good. I now find myself with a gas bill over a month later, for $89.67 and needing to provide a detailed gas receipt after I have provided the return receipt (checked over with the agent and myself prior to leaving) and my debit charges, from my bank, as I have been told by customer service. Three times now I have been asked to provide something different to prove we returned the car full, when the receipt from Budget/Avis identifies that is so. I am writing this in behalf of a terrible and truly unacceptable experience with Avis Rent A Car. Today at 6 p.m. Eastern Time I called Avis to reserve a vehicle for an emergency trip to Orlando, Florida where my mother was hospitalized after an accident. A rep. answered my call from Jamaica and proceeded to reserve a vehicle for a two week period. He told me that I needed to pay him immediately over the phone in order to assure a guaranteed rental. This seemed very odd to me, as I have never given my personal information to anyone over the phone, let alone in a different country. But being pressed for time, and in a desperate situation I was persuaded against my will to furnish him with my debit card information and about after half an hour or so later, on this one seemingly never ending phone call, finally he issued a confirmation number.
He told me that I needed go to Ft. Lauderdale International Airport immediately to pick up the vehicle. Upon arrival at the airport, airport security instructed me to park in short term parking, at $3/hr. (I told them I should not have to pay for parking, while renting a car, but to no avail.) When I finally arrived at the Avis counter, after what seemed like a mile walking distance, the representative asked for my driver's license and bank card and told me that the car that I reserved was no longer available, but she would give me something similar. I was disappointed, but agreed, due to my time restrictions. After I agreed to add full damage coverage, she told me she had to run a credit check. I politely agreed. In a matter of seconds she told me rudely that I was not approved for a rental with Avis.
I was shocked and asked her what was I supposed to do now, having prepaid for something I will not receive. She literally shrugged her shoulders and said "I don't know" and just walked away. This is the honest to God truth. Completely disappointed and frustrated I figured I would immediately search for another rental company, so I called my bank, to find out that I was overdrawn by $435.00. I had just deposited $1020.00 into my account hours earlier. Completely frustrated, I asked for a Avis Customer service manager and after over 30 minutes later, William came out from the back office. He calmly told me what had happened was just unfortunate, but he could not do anything for me. Then he turned his back to me and walked away also.
I next spoke to another representative, Kimberly. She went into the system, after my wife desperately insisted, and pulled up my reservation. She then said that the person that did my reservation had actually done 3 repeatedly identical transactions. Each transaction was in the amount of $482.33. Same reservation charged 3 times. So ending up putting my account overdrawn by $440.00 plus an overdraft fee of $35.00. She also said there was nothing she could do either. I desperately attempted to call Avis customer service at least 10 times, while at the Avis counter but to no avail. Each time I would be put on hold, never able to speak to anyone. I left the airport, after 4 hours wasted and ended up paying $12 for parking and a overdrawn bank account, plus no rental vehicle and no money in my bank account with which to rent a car from another company.
This is a disgrace to the Avis company. I have been a faithful customer for over 23 years, and was ripped off in my time of extreme and dire need. I was not able to get to my mother in her worst moment, all because a worldly renowned company basically scammed me. This is really unacceptable. I am expecting Avis to refund my money immediately plus the overdraft fee as soon as possible. I DO need this money to take this emergency trip ASAP. I would like to know what my legal rights are, because this is fraud. I was basically a victim of theft, which I know is a crime, even on a much smaller level. I urge anybody thinking of using this company to look elsewhere to rent a vehicle. Because you will be very disappointed and may fall victim as I did.

My wife and I arrived at the Dallas (DFW) Airport from Nashville, Tennessee, with Waco, Texas as our destination. At the last minute our flight from Dallas to Waco was cancelled because of "mechanical problems." Instead of staying overnight in Dallas without our luggage or necessary medication, and taking a flight to Waco the next morning, we concluded that we had no viable option other than to rent a car and to drive home. We eventually found our way to the rental car area. Since Waco has only a Hertz, an Avis, and an Enterprise "drop off" at its airport, and due to other circumstances beyond our control, we ended up at the Avis counter.
The person with whom we dealt was Esther **. When we explained to her that we needed a car for transpiration to the Waco Regional Airport in order to access our luggage -- a mere 80 to 90 miles away -- she informed us that there would be bit higher price for our one-way trip and that the minimum rental for which we would pay would be 24 hours. She stated that typically that charge is between $300 and $500 for such a rental! When she noticed the shock on our faces, she stated that she would try to find us a "Promotional" rate. Eureka! ONLY $217! Still feeling that we were being scammed and were between a rock and a hard place, we agreed to that exorbitant rate and left the rental agency in a Kia Forte.
When we arrived at the Waco Regional Airport, after re-filling the car's fuel tank in the about of less than $6, we were informed to our shock and dismay that the price for our rental came to a total of $340! My comments were not cordial. The young lady at the Avis rental desk in Waco stated that she understood our anger, that she had seen a number of people who had been overreached at Avis DFW in the same way. She further stated that she thought it was "their" way of taking advantage of cancelled flights and the exigencies arising from them. She encouraged us to telephone a 1-800 number that she gave us in order to see about a remittance.
What Avis is doing is clearly a deceptive trade practice in the State of Texas. The company and its personnel are knowingly and intentionally misrepresenting the terms of its rental agreements and taking advantage of the unfortunate circumstances of many consumers. If I do not receive satisfaction from Avis when I discuss this matter with its brass, I fully intend to initiate a class action against this thieving company.

So I had a reservation for a minivan at the Hwy 49 Gulfport, MS location recently and when I went to pick up the vehicle during normal business hours I walk in and politely greet the lady at the counter "Hi, I have a reservation for a vehicle." She didn't greet me back. Just a rude and condescending "You have a reservation for HERE?" I said "Uhh... yeah... here." She rolled her eyes and said very rudely again "What is your name?" I gave her my name and she proceeded to tell me she canceled the reservation because I wasn't on time. (I was told I could pick the vehicle up during normal business hours). I told her that while still being very polite. She then said "No, if you aren't here on time I cancel the reservation. That's how it works!" I told her I needed the vehicle still. She asked for payment and I gave her my debit card. She explained it would be a $200 deposit because I was using a debit card. I agreed.
She typed some things into her computer and said "It's denied". No "I'm sorry sir your card isn't going through. Is all the information on your driver’s license correct?" or anything else at least... Just a "It's denied" without any explanation. I said "Maybe you typed in something wrong." and she replied with her rude demeanor "No, I didn't!" and then I decided to just use my credit card which I only use for emergencies and it has NOT A SINGLE charge on it. Guess what? "It's denied". "Impossible. You're doing something wrong." Obviously I was getting frustrated with her rude behavior and now she's telling me both my debit and credit card is denied without asking any questions or giving me any explanations. She just rolled her eyes and said "I'm not doing anything wrong." so I said "Is there anything else I can do?" She said "I guess not."
So... it turns out my address on my license was different than my credit address that they check and she never once informed me of that or asked me to verify my information for accuracy. I didn't know. She should ask the customer to verify information for accuracy if you're running a credit check or what the billing address is for the credit card. It just might be different than what's on the license. I had to make other arrangements to drive to Chattanooga, TN without my family that originally was going with me to visit relatives all because of a rude Avis employee that didn't do her job correctly. I will also file a formal complaint. I feel that I was singled out and discriminated against by this employee since the initial interaction and greeting was met with instant rudeness and she was unwilling to resolve my issue. If anyone wants the number to customer service it's 1800-352-7900.

I rented a new Camry with 12k miles for a week of vacation. The second to last day the car wouldn't start; Avis did send someone who eventually turned up and boost started the car; he pointed out the battery terminals were very corroded, but that the car should be charged if I left it running for while. Next morning it wouldn't start, again. That day was the last day, and I drove it straight to the airport (about 75 minutes drive), without stopping. Which was lucky, because after I got there and turned off the engine, it again wouldn't start. The Avis lady nicely said she was sorry (though she didn't seem particularly cut up about it), and didn't charge me for my failure to refill the tank (which of course I wouldn't have been able to do without shutting off the engine).
I'm not sure how annoyed to be about this. I think anyone could be excused for thinking that "of course" a late model Camry should work. On the other hand, anyone even glancing under the hood would be able to see that the battery terminals were corroded. (Maybe this is a problem for a car living near the sea?) And I do feel irritated that two days that should have been relaxing and fun were instead quite irritating. It seems to me that they should have a policy of automatically refunding the rental fees if it turns out the thing they rent to you doesn't actually work.

I got a car on July 1st. They checked my credit. That was fine cause I was using a debit card. They held 659 dollars out my account. The car was due back on the 7th of July but I kept it for additional days. I called to let them know that but one day I get a call saying "bring the car in" and I did but when I got the receipt the total was $1,600. So I added up everything myself and it didn't come up to that amount.
Now my account is messed up because of them taking money out my account that wasn't supposed to. Been taken fuel. Was $114 dollars the car. They said it was $610 for 3 weeks then fees came up to $140. They said they didn't get paid for the car but they did get paid. When I first got it not only that they said for the extra days the total was 1600$ I was told to call corporate because my payment didn't go through. But I called my bank and my bank say they paid Avis 1600$ but Avis is telling me I owe them money. They terrible. After I get everything corrected I would never rent from them again. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. They taking people money.

Useless front desk staff at Houston Airport lied to me by confirming that I could just extend my rental and would get the same rate as for the first period booked. Turned out to be LIES and they added all kinds of extra insurance and options, which I never had to start with. Trying to resolve the issue with the manager was like arguing with a deaf moron and all I got was ''contact customer services''. Well they have ZERO customer service. Next rental is now in London and I need to extend my initial 13 day rental by 5 more days. Called their useless booking desk who said extra 5 days will be £379.00, which is around the same as my original 13 day booking because it's a different rate code. How difficult is it to have set fixed rates??? The disinterested booking clerk could not care less and they could not help and he said ''Contact or go to an Avis office, but if you call, call after 8pm at night cause they're too busy to take calls."
I've been a lifelong member and an Avis preferred member and have spent massive amounts over many years on very regular and mostly long-term rentals. I recently rented a vehicle and after I finally received my receipt, I noticed several discrepancies that need to be addressed. There were some deceptive practices and if not corrected, I will file a complaint with the Wisconsin, AG and Federal Government. I am a federal employee with the US Government and the Financial Officer for the district, which is over my purview. We have 58 centers in 12 states where I frequently travel to conduct site visits as well. I recently travelled to Green Bay, Wisconsin and Escanaba, Michigan to conduct site visits and our facilities there. I rented a car (rental agreement number **) on 7/10/2016 and returned the vehicle on 7/15/2016.
When I picked up the car there was a young man at the counter and I am not sure if he is experienced or not. The receipt that I have indicated that Ben issued me the car and it says the I turned the vehicle in to Ben. The two young men that I interacted with during both transactions were not the same individual. When I rented the vehicle, I walked up to the counter and the person asked my name and looked me up on the computer. He then grabbed the key from the key box and put it on the counter, so he already knew what he was going to give me. He started filling out the contract asking me if I wanted specific items and I denied everything that was presented to me. I am covered on insurance through the federal government.
He also asked me several other questions trying to persuade me to get additional insurance. He also asked me if I wanted to pay for the fuel service upon return and I did not want that and I indicated that. I was at the counter for a while because he was having issues locating my Avis Preferred Member Account. He said that he located it but I had moved and he was having issues loading up the new address. He apparently could not understand the zip code that I was giving him or typed it incorrectly into the system.
After fumbling with it for several minutes, he told me that he would correct the issue later and he was email me the information, which I never received. He had me run through the ePad signatures quickly because he seemed uncomfortable at this point because he was having issues. At no point did I ask for an upgrade to my economy car but it was given to me. He did not ask me nor did he indicate that I was getting an upgrade. I am only authorized an economy car when traveling on official business. He must have planned all along to give me this upgrade because as I stated earlier, he gave me the keys right away. He had me walk out to the car and look it over and if I noticed any issues to come back to the counter and we could discuss the issues. I didn’t notice any damage that wasn’t already noted on the paperwork or pink slip.
I took the car for several days and never received the email regarding my account. Once I returned the car, I drove lap after lap around the parking lot trying to find an Avis staff member to turn the car back into. There is no obvious signage noting what one is supposed to do upon return. I finally just parked in a spot, the same spot where I got the car (row 5 #82). On the paperwork, it reads row 5 #2 and there is no row 5 #2. I walked around with the key fob until I found the car honking the horn and it took awhile when I initially took the car.
Once I returned the vehicle and since there was no Avis staff to receive the car, I walked inside and handed over the keys. I was asked if everything was ok with the car, if I had all of my belongings out, if I noted the mileage and if I filled it up. I did fill the vehicle up within 10 minutes of the keys being turned in to the staff at the counter. I did not note the exact mileage but it was around 51000 miles. It was not stated that I needed to bring in the mileage. I was not provided a receipt and I was told that it would be emailed to me shortly. I never received the receipt for the vehicle in the email. On Sunday as I am driving back to Saint Louis, Missouri, I received a phone call asking if I wanted to extend the car, since I had not turned it back in as of Sunday.
Today I called and told me that I had turned in the car on Friday and I was not sure what their issue was and why it was not documented as of Sunday as being returned. The record was corrected from what I was told and the female stated that she would provide me with a receipt in the email. I gave her my government email address so I could file my travel claim. I have three business days to file my travel claim according to federal travel regulations. I never received the receipt and finally went online to see if there was a way to download a copy myself. As I did, I noticed that I was charged $112.35 in fuel service fees. The receipt states that the car was turned in at 1:21 pm and I have my fuel receipt from GV Quick Stop at 1:06, this receipt shows that I filled the vehicle up with 8.643 gallons of fuel. That was what I utilized in fuel and the vehicle was returned full, I stated this during the turn in process.
I also noticed that there was a $15.00/day upgrade fee that I did not request but was given. This was not discussed but apparently this is something that I signed for on the ePad. Whomever issued me the car did not discuss this at all with me but he sure talked about everything else and I stated that I did not want any extra features. Today, I called the Green Bay Avis and spoke with Ben. I am not sure if he is the one whom issued me the car or the person whom I turned the vehicle in at the Green Bay Airport but the two staff were not the same person as indicated on the paperwork. Today Ben states that he will not return the charges for the upgrade fee and said I signed for it. He says that everyone signs the ePad but what gets me is the car that was under my agreement had the keys on the counter to me as soon as I walked up.
It’s an extremely deceptive practice that this person did with me during the rental. He knew he was going to give me the car I was issued whether I approved the upgrade or not. He compared not giving me the credit to a comparison of purchasing a meal at McDonalds, which was an extremely stupid remark. He clearly wanted to move pass the upgrade charge and just continued to state that nothing can be done. He told me that we would move to the fuel charges later. At this point, I knew that he was not going to assist me and I told him that I was going to contact the Avis CEO, the Wisconsin AG and the BBB.
I am writing you to get this corrected and if not, I will not be renting again from Avis and I will ensure that the federal travel office that does all of our travel approvals and planning that there was deceptive practices that occurred, inaccurate billing, and pursue getting Avis on the banned list for rentals. As I previously mentioned, I do travel often and I have always preferred Avis but now I may have to pursue other options. The federal government frowns upon deceptive practices and billing violations. I hope to hear from you by tomorrow and have this issue corrected.

My surprise was to found in my credit card purchases an additional charges of this company for extra $124.61 because I returned the car in a different location, approx. 10 miles away from the original location. After I talked with many agents of this company they refused to fix this problem. I ended paying almost $350 for 1 day and 4 hours for a crap Ford Fiesta. This is absolutely ridiculous. I made a reservation online. I called beforehand to check if I could still apply a military discount at the counter even if I paid online, and was told "yes". My flight got delayed and I missed a connecting flight which caused a big change in my reservation time. With that, I would be returning my car after hours. I called Avis and told them this and they said: "No problem, your price won't change." I got to the car rental location and was first told that I would not be able to apply a military discount. Then I told them I did no want any extra protection/coverage, and again told them I would be returning the car after hours. They said, "No problem if they have a drop box, you're good to go. The price won't change."
Then I got my bills. The initial online charge was $106.87+mileage. I ended up getting another bill for $250.21 to total $357.08. On top of not getting a military discount, I got charged for two days because it was returned after hours due to the flight delay (even though I used it for 4 hours). And the odometer somehow indicated 253 miles when I drove directly home which is 174 miles, and they charged $27/day for a coverage that I denied (my fault for signing the agreement, but still frustrating that they messed that up). They won't do anything to help because according to their book, they can charge me for these things. The problem is that I was told false things multiple times and they don't care about your circumstance. They just want to suck you dry.

Since that word of mouth is no longer creditable information at AVIS so must make sure you get it in writing. The agreement state that is a pre authorize amount for the gas part so I did not worry about it until after I return the car I got charge the whole amount. It very Shady the way AVIS operates so watch out for hidden charges at this rental company. This with the almost 2 hour wait time to get my vehicle will make it the last time I rent from AVIS again.

In addition to the rental charge, I was charged $47 for a GPS for 3 days, $39 for additional driver, $86 for insurance plus a $10 late fee plus taxes. What I thought was misleading was the $42 airport fee. If they wanted me to pay their rent for being at the airport, they should charge more than $63 per day and include it in the rate. My $189 rental for 3 days ended up totaling $463.36! Regarding the insurance, 29 per day for 365 totals $10,585. I strongly doubt that it is reflective of their cost for insurance whether self insured or not.

So I left my car with my mechanic in Texas and then scrambled to find a car rental on a sunday. I called Avis they gave me a quote. I notified them that I am only 21 and asked how much extra the charge would be. They said only $90 for 6 days. I was OK with that as I didn't have many other options at this point.
I got to the rental car distribution center and the lady more or less forced me into purchasing the extra (optional) liability insurance even though I repeatedly asked whether it was mandatory. Then she told me I could upgrade for free, WHICH WAS NOT TRUE. They charged me $200 extra for the upgrade, even though the lady said I could upgrade for free because the car class I wanted was not available.
Then because I was renting from an airport I naturally had to take the tollway out. I figured a $2 toll would be added to my charges, but I glanced at my receipt and found they charged me $20 for a $2 toll... I also found they had charged me $160 for the underage fee instead of the $90 quoted. He then began to process my rental while talking on the phone about his son, apparently trying to add him to insurance. He finally ended his call and completed my transaction. He handed me the registration and said it should be full of gas. I had to make him go out and do an inspection; he had zero intention of leaving the comfort of his precious desk to do a quality check. I put air in the left rear tire and set off on my trip.
Next day my tire was low again. I put more air in the tire. Tire leaked out and got low pressure again. I took it to the Memphis airport to swap it out. While waiting on them to get me a new car another customer asked to speak with the manager. He told her that one of the employees had opened his car door, looked at the gauges and gave him a receipt to $39 in gas. He was picking the car up, not returning it... As I mentioned, I rented an intermediate SUV to carry my family in; the lady at the airport hands me keys to a Mitsubishi Lancer, and tells me it's for the Mazda3 and points in the general direction of roughly 250 cars from which I was apparently supposed to find mine. I finally get her to give me a SUV and head back to Fayetteville.
I go to return the car on Sunday afternoon at 1245; their hours say Sunday 12-3. Nobody there. They're apparently closed Sunday and Monday for Independence Day but failed to post that fact anywhere. While I admire their patriotism, I have no choice due to the rest of my experience, but to fully expect them to screw me on the number of days I had the car. So I'll be spending the next 2 days gearing up for a fight that should not have to take place.

I pre-paid with my credit card an amount of US$ 317.86. However a few kilometers before my arrival in Kitchener, I stopped in Cambridge and while I was getting some stuff from the trunk I placed the car key in the trunk and closed the trunk. Soon after I went in the car and pressed the trunk door open button. I hear a click but the trunk won't open.
I called local AVIS number and I didn't get any response. I phoned CAA and they dispatched a roadside assistance not only one but 2. Unfortunately they didn't have the means to open the trunk but they got me contact with a locksmith. The key man arrived onsite and with impressive hi-tech means he was able to download required data based on VIN and made the key there on the spot and opened the trunk for me. This process took me about 3 hours and by the time I got the car key and drove the car to the return location it was 4PM and the Avis rental Office was closed. I parked the car in their parking lot, left the key in the key drop and went home.
Now when I checked my credit card they have charged US$ 741.83. That is (US$ 423.15) more! I went to the Kitchener, Ontario Avis car rental office to ask about the extra charges and the guy at the front desk told me I was charged the extra amount because they calculated the rental period until Monday morning (their office opening time) instead of Saturday since I didn't arrive before their closing time. I explained to them what happened to me and why I was late. After 6 hours wait I was able to speak to the "Manager" and he told me closing the key in the trunk was my "Stupidity" and he couldn't help me.
When I asked him about the trunk opener in the car that doesn't work he answered me "Our car got you here. That is all is needed from us". The Avis employees at the Kitchener Ontario office treated me with disrespect and have no interest to even properly listen. I booked a minivan rental at Avis Tampa Airport. The listing said "minivan, Town and Country or similar". I got a Kia Sedona, basically a station wagon type car with a 3rd row seat. There was only enough room in trunk for 1 large suitcase! I had 7 people and the Sedona did have 7 seats thinking this will accommodate 7 people, luckily 4 were kids but even at that it was a ridiculously tight fit. Everyone had to squeeze their suitcase on their lap and thankfully the other 6 suitcases were very small. Definitely wasn't expecting this. I did see the listing they have classified under minivan but was not aware of the cars they were. (I assumed they were truly similar to Town and Country or Dodge Caravan.)
There was a reason I needed a true minivan, similar to Town and Country (what is stated) - because it's way bigger! Just trying to spread the word in case others are looking for the same. You will get stuck with a Kia Sedona (or similar), a mid size car with a 3rd row seat!!! That's what they give out under "minivan"!! Maybe other rental companies do this too, not sure. Out of all the rental cars in the airport parking lot, I never seen one true minivan like a Town and Country or Dodge Caravan, but a ton of Sedonas and the like. I feel this is misleading and really feel they need to change the categories of these type of cars! I know there are a lot of families who book minivans for the same reasons as I. Be aware!

First I had rented and paid for my car before arriving in the airport in Atlanta Ga June 24, 2016. I stood in line with many other upset customers for over an hour and a half to pick up the car. When I get to the counter they tell me they have no small cars (which I had ordered and paid for prior to my arrival). They proceed to insist I upgrade for $18 more a day! I refuse and continue to stand in line.
When I get my ticket they kept my return time at the original time instead of changing to the time I received the car! Then when my parents arrive to our location (my daughter is having a baby) my dad needs to be on the rental so he can get around too while I'm at the hospital with my daughter. I was charged $13 a day to add him. That is as much as the car rental! Plus they increased the amount of the car rental price! So for 1 week I paid $182 total then when I went to add my dad and add a week the price for the Extra week was $261.14... Double!!! This is a rip. Rudest customer service on top of everything. I called corp office and no help from them. They were rude. Never again!!! Beware of this company. The only reason I gave 1 star was it wouldn't let me give ZERO!

Avis are scammers. After I complained that the whole trip I had to keep putting air in 3 of the tires because the jeep kept saying low tires pressure for 6 days during my rental. I called every day to complain and was not offered any assistance. Then they claimed I smoked in the piece of crap car and sent me pics of some cars carpet with what looked like dirt. They charged me $250.00. They refused to listen that we did NOT smoke in their car. If there were any ashes we did have the windows down all the time because we were in Chattanooga and it was hot. Since when is there a $250.00 vacuuming fee??? NEVER use Avis. I know I will not and my company will no longer use them! AVIS you are a rip off!!!

Me and my friend George arranged a car rental with our Travel Agent with Budget (now owned by Avis). In our trip package we arranged rental car through Avis and at the time the transaction went through and we were charged $600. After our plane to Oregon landed, we were shuttled to Budget(owned by Avis) and when my friend George got to the counter, Avis or Budget claimed they could not rent a car to George because of some misdemeanor on his record 21 years ago. The car rental was in his name and I offered to be named the main driver but Avis claimed they couldn't change that transaction over nor refund our money we would have to fill out a claim separately. I mean how can a place accept money and deny services later doesn't make any sense.
Furthermore, he had to contact his travel agent to fight the claim of refunding our money which totally sucks. So all and all, how can they hold a misdemeanor someone had 21 years ago from purchasing a rental and above all, how can they just take our money and not readily refund it when transaction is denied. Avis totally sucks and wouldn't recommend anyone to rent a car from Avis or Budget Rental Cars.

We rented a mid size Suv in Austin, Texas on june 11th. We landed earlier 1 hour and they didn't have a car. We had the rental from june 11th 13.30 to june 14, 13.30. Picking up the car 45 minutes early (because they count the time from the time we said Hi to the gentlemen over the counter, not the time they finally found a car). We extend our rental for one more day... was cheaper than paying for 2 more hours if needed. Our rental was $235. I check today the card statement. We were charged 411$. I call Avis, they said we return the car with tank empty and we keep the car 2 hours long when we return the car june 14th at 17.00 (earlier by only 19 hours and a half). The only way to get our money back to send prove of receipts. The man in the airport didnt give us any receipt. We asked twice. He said that we are fine. Check your receipt and keep them if you do not want to be overcharged.

I arrived at the airport in Sacramento, CA after a 18-hour trip via LA from London. The person who was dealing with my car hire at the AVIS counter had one customer to serve - me - nobody else in the queue. Just pointing this out as the number of mistakes made is astonishing me...to say the least. I specifically pointed out that I did not want any additional insurance as my company does not pay for it, which I also stated. I then again told her that the only additional services that I required was a GPS and a confirmation that my colleague could be added, to which I was told that my colleague could also drive the car. And I was asked if I wanted the GPS in English or in my own language (I speak fluent English with a British accent so not sure what my own language would be) and was given one in Spanish which I then had to go back and exchange for another one, adding more time to the check out.
At the best this person need to be retrained in listening to what a customer says - worst case the person deliberately added: personal accident service, personal effects protection and additional liability insurance, taking advantage of the fact that the paperwork was hardly legible and perhaps my tiredness. I have rented cars with both Avis and others for years and I have never been conned like this before. As I was tired from my long haul flight, I signed. I saw the part with the GPS but did not notice the unwanted added services which I had made a point to decline. I have called customer services in the UK, Avis at Sacramento Airport as well as the manager there - nobody is doing anything, so please be warned and never make the mistake of trusting AVIS - DO read every line of the paperwork just in case. I will never rent a car with Avis again, not just because of the 99 $ loss but mainly for their failure to respond to me within 24 hours.

On December 31, 2015 my friend and I were rear-ended by an Avis rental car. The person driving was from Korea and hardly spoke English. I took pictures of the accident, their car, and rental agreement. The front bumper of the rental car was totally torqued so the car was un-driveable. Both my friend and I sustained neck and shoulder injuries, I had headaches and migraines. My medical bills amounted to $1,800.00, which were conservative in light of my pain and suffering. My friend had a neck injury and also sustained damages to her car. We filed an online accident report, as per instructions from Avis. We heard nothing from them (all you get is a recording). My friend's car insurance (Progressive) had a difficult time contacting Avis (managed by Sedgwick) Insurance also.
At first they said they couldn't locate the driver, Progressive found him (and has a recording admitting the accident was his fault), and now Avis Insurance says they aren't sure he's insured. The car was rented in Nevada and driven to California. According to Nevada law the rental company is required to carry minimum liability insurance for their cars. It's now 5 months later and nothing. I sent a demand letter to them over a month ago and they haven't had the courtesy to reply. We are both 64-year-old ladies and were stopped at a light minding our own business. I think it's awful for a company to care so little about the people who are injured by their automobiles. They have not tried to help us in any way - just stonewalling us. I wanted you to be aware of what sort of company you are dealing with if you rent from them. It's a shame.

I decided to start back renting cars due to I have a lot of business appointments. I use to rent cars from Avis using my business account several years ago. Much to find their service has gone downhill. The staff and managers are awful. I rented a full-size car - had to wait for over 3 hours as they did not have adequate cars available then much to find that they gave me a raggedy maximum that had cigarette holes in it, weekend of weed, and cigarettes and then tell me to drive to another location to trade it in. I spent a whole day of my time in the car transporting 2 vehicles to get a better one. Bernard who said that he cleaned the car told me that the company had not ordered cleaning supplies to clean the cars and then Reagan National manager was really nice to me after all I had gone through. He was frustrated because so many people had come to his location from the last location. What we have to do is stop renting from these places then report them.
There are guidelines in which they have to follow. I will place some very important information very soon as to how we can hold these places accountable for treating us like this. If it was not for us their business would not be. The manager at Reagan National was really nice after he overheard how I was being treated even on the phone. I called the Attorney General's office and they are helping me get to the right people so that we can file complaints and hold the company accountable. You can also get the owner(s) information, CEO, CFO, President, Vice President and the board members. Never think that you have to put up with paying for a service and being mistreated. You can also call your local news station. If and when they get enough call and information they will air it and investigate. I will be posting numbers and names soon!

My daughter and I got stranded in Florida, and had to rent a car Saturday, June 11. I made the mistake of getting it from Avis. I was charged 193.00 for a one day compact rental, was not asked about insurance but charged for it anyway. Did not realize that until Sunday when I went to return the car. I returned the car at the Bluegrass Airport in Lexington, KY. I rented at 8:30 central time and returned it at 9:35 ET. I got to the airport and had to park in the very back of the lot, walked up to the Avis kiosk it was closed, and a sign said you need to write down your mileage. So had to turn around go get mileage, walk all the way back into the airport, two people in front of us...
Finally get to counter and lady says it will be 500.00 extra for returning to Lexington. I asked her why. She said it was FL that did that. I kindly asked her to call them. She would not. So I did. They changed the charge to 55.00. Sounded great. She hadn't checked the car in yet, then she says, "Ok that will be 521.00, you are being charged an extra day, because now the vehicle is 40 minutes late". And she was arguing that it was returned over an hour late. Didn't comprehend that 8:30 CT is 9:30 ET. She could have removed it but wouldn't even though it was her fault for arguing the whole time. Didn't even ask, "Do you want to take the car since you're going to be paying for it," and then charged insurance again for the car sitting on their lot.
I called their corporate office. They would not give any kind of resolve or pro-rating. The manager was very rude, at corporate and at Bluegrass Airport. I am appalled by this company. They are stealing from people and somehow getting away with it. Action needs to be taken... I tried to call back to get some sort of resolve, but they said I had already called once, and they would not allow me to talk to a Supervisor. According to the reviews they are ripping people off everyday in every state.

Here is a copy of my letter to Avis customer service explaining complaint. If representatives receive extra pay for selling upgrades it might explain this. I have rented many vehicles and never been taken advantage of at the counter when I checked in to get my car. I signed the paperwork and expected I would get what I chose on Priceline and pay the amount I was quoted. $56.20. I didn't have any conversation with the receptionist about any upgrades so all I can figure is that she just added stuff on and I trustingly signed and went to pick up the car. As you can see my initials are not on the paper at either the $30.00 upgrade or the estimated total which would have called my attention to the discrepancy of the higher cost for the rental. I never looked at the increase of the cost on the bill until I brought the car back.
Here is a copy of the Priceline print out showing my daily price of $23.00 with collision insurance charge of $11.00 the upgrade to the standard car costing $9.00 and taxes & fees of $23.00. The Avis rental number is also different on your billing compared to the number on the Priceline sheet suggesting that it is a different reservation made up before I got there. I feel that I was scammed at the counter. (Do your agents get extra pay for selling upgrades?) I want to be reimbursed the extra money I was charged. I do not like being taken advantage of and will not let this go. There may be others that are being deceived at the counter which is illegal and just a bad business practice.

There was no way I was renting that since I declined the insurance because I have full coverage on myself. I returned the keys and asked them if they looked at the car because it was wrecked. She told me to go check out 2 other vehicles. I returned to the window thinking I was being pranked because those vehicles was also dented and wreck. Not to mention older models. One still had keys in it and still turned on like someone had just hopped out.
Finally I got a car I approved of. The car drove fine. Just was a very late model. I returned the car on my return date. 1 hour early. Clean and full of gas. The next day I checked my account and see AVIS charged me 241.45. I call customer service and the lady first say I returned to car 1 day early. NO. 1 hour early. Then she say I had the car for 12 days... NO. Only had it 4 days. Then she said to fill the car gas... NO. I refueled it myself. Then she said that was the price of car... NO. Their roadside assistance was horrible and basically told me it was nothing they could do for me... I rented a 12 passenger Ford Transit van from the Lagrange location on Tuesday June 7th and set to return it on June 13th. Well as we departed for our trip on Wednesday June 8th, we had issues with the rental van. It cut off on us while in Phoenix City Alabama, I get on the phone to contact roadside assistance and we were told to check the gear shift to ensure it was not in M (manual) and to ensure it was in D (drive). We did that after sitting beside the road for an hour, after coasting the van to the gas station down the street. We then proceed on the road and the van breaks down on I-75 South in Valdosta Georgia mile marker 32. Again roadside assistance was called and to no avail, I was told it was nothing they could do for me.
I then call the manager at the Lagrange Georgia location, Tony, who tells me to call roadside assistance again as they should not tell me that it's nothing they can do. I call them back again and, the young lady states that she can send out a wrecker service to pick up the van and 1 driver (me). Well. It's 12 ladies total and I was not going to get in anyone's vehicle and leave them stranded in the heat. We were then told that a 12 passenger van is in Tallahassee Florida, they can take me to get the van but the other 11 passengers had to find their own transportation. That's absurd! One of the local state troopers stopped to see if we needed any assistance and told us the nearest exit was 4 miles up, so we were able to coast to that exit and get out of harm's way! Finally, after being told no and there was nothing that roadside assistance could do, the van finally was able to crank and I drove it to the nearest Avis location in Valdosta Georgia.
I had previously called them and they stated that they did not have any vehicles, they were out. Well that didn't sound right to me so upon arrival I walked in and the manager Charley ** was able to assist me, for that I am thankful. She was able to put us in 4 cars; however I did not expect to incur costs for 3 additional vehicles. I feel as if I should be compensated for the additional cost of the parking @ the cruise terminal, gas, and tolls as it was no fault of my own. The van broke down twice!! Roadside assistance was useless as they told me it was nothing they could do for me and left 12 ladies stranded in the scorching heat over 5 hours... I'm not happy right now and I demand satisfaction quickly! I'd been passed around 8 times through various customer service reps with Avis and with roadside assistance.
I work in customer service myself and this is absolutely no way to treat a customer. I've spoken with customer service and the only thing they offered was a one time $50 credit towards my next rental, well I don't need it as I don't feel Avis/Budget is worthy of my business again. I'm not asking for compensation of all the vehicles, but compensation for myself and family being inconvenienced when we rented what was thought to be a reliable vehicle from your company. Come to find out the vehicle has a recall, did Avis really endanger the lives of a customer to make a sale?? I do expect to be compensated for the cost of 3 of the vehicles. I expected to rent 1 and incur cost for 1 vehicle, not 3... At this point I want all of my money back. Their customer service lacks in all areas and I would advise everyone to stay far away from them. Dissatisfied Customer.

I have been renting cars across North America and this did not happen a lot which was a very dissatisfied experience with Avis Charlottetown PEI Canada. Overcharges for fuel. I knew the price of Avis for fuel is a little higher than gas stations, but you should not just rob people's money secretly - on the day when I returned my car I noticed that I only used less than 10% of the total fuel which I doubled checked and was quite sure, actually that was why I wanted to just return the car instead of going to a gas station first to save some time since it was not much usage. It turned out I was too naive - I checked my bank account later and they took me $45, which is almost a full tank's price for my rental car. Called and confirmed this. Quite interesting.
Need better call center reps training quality. I called them later asking about the issue. At the end of the call I said "Alright, thanks", and she said nothing but hang up the phone. Still interesting, does Avis provide customer service training at all? No manager calling back as promised. The say-nothing-but-hang-up-phone lady promised me the manager would call me back that afternoon to better explain the issue. I saved my afternoon staying in my office waiting for the call. It never happened, ever, even not in the next few days. Oh sorry my bad, should I call you again Avis?

At the airport the agent told us that we could have gotten the car at the ferry but could return it there. When asked why they told us that the car needed to be pickup at the airport, he said "they lied". At the time of rental we pre-paid for a tank of gas. The keys were returned the same day through the night slot as instructed. Nine months later we got 3 letters in Danish that seem to have demanded payment. After much trouble I contacted AVIS customer service. Their webpage does not work. After many e-mails I finally sent them a copy of the billing and was told that the bill was for a return fee to the ferry, a second driver, and for the gas, i.e, their agent screwed up and did not bill anything.
I disputed the ferry fee and the gas charge (more than a pre-fill, and the ferry. They said that they would forward this to the Danish office who never got back. Meanwhile I got another bill (this time partly in English) with a collection threat and a nearly doubled fee. Payment was required by wire transfer. Because of something odd, the transfer could not be don by Western Union and had to be done by a bank (with a $35 charge). I hope that this is the last of this and will never do business with AVIS/Budget again.

I recently booked a vehicle via the Avis Preferred mobile app at the Chicago Airport location. When I booked the vehicle I did not opt for any insurance charges and agreed to an amount of $840.23. When I returned back from the trip and saw my credit card statement I noticed that Avis charged me $1,415. I spoke to the customer call center representative who said since I picked up the vehicle I accepted the charges, whereas being a Preferred member I picked up my vehicle from the allocated bay and did not sign any additional agreement with these charges.
Also the Avis ORD did not provide me with any agreement copy as they mentioned "we are paperless". Now as a result they found a perfect way to sneak in the additional charges. Word of advice - please see the agreement before you drive off with the rental. The customer call center representative mentioned that charges are not being reversed and if this is the case then I will be dropping out of the preferred membership and will book from other providers.

As I went to return my car I learned my flight was cancelled so I drove to Washington DC to catch the Acela to NY and was charged a total of almost $600. I rented the car for a total of 28hrs. When I objected to the outlandish price the Avis gal behind the counter had an attitude and a half. She could not understand the bill so she called her supervisor who was on a break and he told that was the price and there was nothing to discuss.
According to him, those are the rules. So, now I have American Express fighting the battle with me. I think Congress needs to look into the car rental business as it has become absurd what they are doing lately. If I operated my business like the car rental agencies do I would be in jail! I am an extensive traveler and normally use Enterprise or Alamo who by the way had no cars available for rent (I think they are not interested in 1 day rentals) so I tried Avis. BIG MISTAKE!!!
Save yourself a headache and never prepay for your orders as it seems to be used against you when you have a change of plans. They do not inform you of all the FINE PRINT and all you hear is "oh no, you prepaid. This is going to be a problem". I was only in Sweden for the weekend! Like an idiot, I didn't ask for a refund, I just asked for them to pay for my hotel stay. Fast forward to recently visiting Sweden!! I booked a car through airportrentals.com without realising they were giving me another AVIS car. Surprise surprise despite being charged double to have an Automatic, they had reserved a manual car for me. It was 11 pm at night and it took them ONE HOUR to find me an automatic car. I didn't leave until 12:30 am. This time I demanded compensation and rude manager called Mr. ** emailed me insulting me, calling me a liar (despite there being cctv and evidence). She refused to rent one to me. Called up national number and was told by customer service rep that my confirmation didn't entitle me to a car, just a locked in rate. When I told her that my confirmation said a car had been reserved for me, she then said that because my reservation was less than 48 hours I wasn't entitled to a car. Told rep that my confirmation said nothing about a 48-hour disclaimer.

When I returned the car and looked at the bill it was over 134 dollars. I looked at the bill and saw a charge for traveling less than 75 miles and because there wasn't a line at the counter I went back and asked what that was for and he said it was a gas charge that automatically goes on the bill if you don't go very far and because I had topped off the tank he took it off.
The bill still was too high at 119$ but there was a line now and I was in the process of moving and thought I would call into Avis in a few days. So I just called Avis customer service and they said I was charged for roadside assistance which I wasn't aware of and understandably they wouldn't take it off as I would have had to have known about this charge prior BUT I will never use Avis again because I do not think a customer should have unexplained charges that you have to search for... They charged us AN EXTRA $255.92 for a loss damage waiver that we never wanted. We are not Americans and just moved here. So we don't understand everything. We wanted to spend a nice holiday and found this! I am sure that my husband did not understand what he was signing. I called customer service and they declined to take it from the bill since he had signed it. She said she could but she is not going to do it. I am so furious. I don't know what to do. Moreover, we had to wait for almost an hour to get our car and then our car was not ready so there was a big confusion and all we wanted was to get our holidays started with 2 little children. Could anyone help? Should I take a lawyer? How arrogant could this company be? I swear I will go all steps and harm them!!! This is theft.

When I rent cars I NEVER elect for additional insurance. Earlier this month I had to rent a car in St Louis and did so thru Priceline along with a flight. When I went to pick the car up, the rental agent mumbled a bunch of stuff and presented a host of documents to sign. And he asked if I wanted GPS - no. Did I want extra insurance - no. I believed I was signing just for the release of the car and release of extra insurance. I drove the car and returned it - no problem. Now I find an extra $70 charge for extra insurance!!! WTF? How many times do you have to say you don't want? I called AVIS, talked to the billing dept. They told me I'd signed for extra liability insurance. This practice they have is totally bogus.

Warning Stay Away!!! Do not Rent from Avis Norfolk, VA "ORF" Airport! I was a walk up Avis was the only company with cars available. The clerk at the counter told me with a smile that she wouldn't match the Hotwire rate of $18. It would be 1:30 to get the car if I booked on Hotwire and because I was a walk up it would be $59 and I had to purchase liability. When I checked my account, my bill came to $105. No recourse because I didn't keep the receipt. I will never rent from Avis again and I suggest you don't either!

We reserved a car weeks in advance, went to pick it up, told they did not have the order we reserved, but they had a larger car that cost more and we would have to pay the additional fee. The rep refused to give us the car for the same price as the one we reserved, he did nothing to help resolve this issue. I stood at the counter and had to call customer service to try and resolve, they told me I had to pay the additional cost then file a complaint to get the money back. Very poor customer service. IT IS NOT MY FAULT. AVIS DID NOT SEND THE CORRECT CAR TO THIS LOCATION. THEY HAD WEEKS TO GET IT THERE.
