When we arrived at Avis, they only had one vehicle remotely close to what we reserved. When we got inside, it was evident that it had been heavily smoked in and as the heat of the day baked it in, it continued to worsen. We were told to contact Avis anywhere along our trip and they would help us. We were sent to Rochester, Buffalo, Fort Wayne (2 locations) and spent hours out of our trip trying to remedy the issue and even paid money for odor absorbers, odor masking, and eye drops due to burning eye issues.

We had 2 passengers suffer throat irritation, coughing, and one passenger suffered nausea when in the car after it sat in the heat multiple times. We all had eye irritation and sinus burning after the first day. My husband, who has nodes on his lungs and was in an accident the day before our trip that caused him to have bruised ribs and swelling on his spine, had breathing irritation that exasperated his lung issue and caused him greater discomfort.

We tried to replace the vehicle many times, and on 2 occasions were treated very unprofessional by employees at the Avis rental sites that we had been sent to by the call in service number. Not once did they show empathy or give us a feasible solution. We feel this should be made right as we paid over $1,000 for the vehicle that brought a negative and even harmful effect on our trip. With no real help from Avis associates.

I rented from Avis IAH (Houston) for the first time and used the car minimally back and forth while I was visiting my family. There was a small amount of pet hair on the floor of one side of the van (as noted by the "damage" report) and I was charged $125 cleaning fee. I was notified of this 3 or 4 days after the car was returned. The amount of hair that was in the car could have easily been lint-rolled up in under 5 minutes. I called to dispute this fee and they refused to help me or even reduce the fee. I would not recommend this location to anyone visiting the area.

Updated on 08/11/2024: Today it's August the 10th 2024 and Avis has not refunded my deposit. I have contacted my credit card company and a dispute on Avis charges. Hate to do it but Avis left me no choice. Never rent from Avis. Renting from Enterprise and Sixt has been a joy always.

Original Review: I rented a car and was told AVIS will put hold onto my credit card in the sum of USD 1500. No problem as that is normal, I thought. I was told within 3 days, after I return my rented car, they will refund me anything over the agreed rental cost. Today it’s 19 days and I see no credit on my credit card.

Note, this happened at the rental agency in Barcelona airport. It took us more than an hour to get the car, and there were only about 4 people ahead of us, some guys were kind enough to let us pass ahead given that we were in a rush. It took this long even though everyone did their-online pre-checkin. When we returned the car instead, the staff basically took the keys and rudely shooed me away, even when I insisted to do the car check with them and that I should sign.

The staff people, given that there was no one else around, could have easily just done the check with me, instead they turned their back to me, pretended that I wasn't there and just said "If you filled the tank then it's fine lady, we'll just take the keys". Of course an hour later, when I was at the gate in the airport, I receive an email that they are charging me 400 euro for damages (a.k.a. a scratch) + out-of-usage costs (i.e. the car needs to sit at the shop 1 day to be repaired so it loses them money).

To top it all off, at the counter when we got the car we switched the first driver to me, the agency took my credit card and then proceeded to charge the second driver's credit card, which they had on file from the booking - EVEN THOUGH THEY TOOK MY CARD AT CHECK-IN AND EVEN CHARGED ME THE DEPOSIT FEE. So now, all the documents have one name on it, and they charged the damages to a credit card with a different name. To this day they have not rectified the error. Without this correction, I cannot claim insurance from my provider. Please, if you must rent from them, do not trust these people as far as you can throw them. Otherwise, just go with another rental agency.

Hidden service charges, 30-minute wait on hold before being disconnected by customer service, incorrect information given by customer service representatives... all in all, a huge waste of time and money. There are other companies to choose from; none are perfect but I won't be choosing Avis again.

My wife was traveling to Augusta, GA and her flight was severely delayed. I called to let the rental company we had booked with know, and they said they would not be open. So I called Avis and they told me that they would be open, and to guarantee she had a car, I should go online and pre-pay. They assured me that if I pre-paid then the car would be there. She reached the airport, and NO car. And, they refused to give her an immediate refund. They charged her the FULL $315 for the rental AND $300 hold. So $615 on her credit card yet NO car.

She even got an e-mail saying the cancelled rental WAS NOT REFUNDABLE. How is that possible when THEY DIDN'T HAVE A CAR! What about the interest that is going to hit her credit card? On top of all of that, once she arrived, she told me that the guy at the counter was so rude that another basketball family overheard and felt so bad that they offered her a ride. Avis is running a legal scam. A terrible company.

I rented a car from Avis in Tulum TQO- stay away- they made me wait 3 hours for my car, which is completely unacceptable. Once car arrived, driver's door doesn’t close properly I legit thought I was in the Flintstones, seatbelts don’t work whatsoever. These are all safety hazards that should be compensated and corrected immediately. No customer should be driving a car with failing safety measures whatsoever and to even wait for a car three hours is beyond unacceptable. Seatbelts not working is an additional safety measure.

I had kids and my family in the car. They did not want to give me another car or even offered. With all this being said, it deserves a compensation to say the least. They quoted me a price of 1800 dollars with receipt and then charge me 2612.00 originally insurance was included In the price reservation, but then at TQO that’s not true - whatsoever you need insurance so called. I feel truly robbed at this point. Horrendous experience to say the least.

I've been a loyal customer of Avis and have Avis Preferred status. I received a letter after returning my latest rental to the OAK location that I'd have to pay a $450 cleaning fee for "excessive dirt and sand" with "heavy severity." I rented the car for 11 days and drove it 1,500 miles with 5 people in the vehicle. We took great care to minimize messes in the vehicle. We wiped our feet if there was dirt and didn't eat anything in the car. The rental was in the San Francisco area which is known for car break-ins, so we hardly put anything in the vehicle and had nothing visible --- it was completely cleaned of belongings upon return. There was what I consider a normal amount of debris from 5 pairs of shoes going in and out of the vehicle for 11 days, certainly not more than a 5-minute vacuum could take care of. We've vacuumed rentals in the past when we felt they were excessively dirty, but this was not.

I've appealed to Avis through multiple channels and have gotten nowhere, each time with them citing photos of the vehicle that do not show it was excessively dirty. At one point they told me that it's my job to clean the car before returning it. Their terms do not require cleaning, but say you'll pay a "reasonable fee" for cleaning if they determine it's excessively dirty, which was not the case with this rental. I can't trust Avis anymore because I can't roll the dice on whether my next rental will cost $450 extra, and I won't do their job for them to make the car spotless for the next customer after I've paid a full rental fee.

I retired recently, having used Avis for business rental cars for many years. On a recent trip to Europe I rented one-way to the airport, and a 10 day rental in the UK. I am dismayed to report that although the cars and service were good, I feel that they attempted to scam me TWICE. At the airport I fell victim to the $23 charge for 1/2 gallon of gas needed to 'top up'. Others have reported the same scam, they seem to think that customers won't challenge the scam. I did, and it was reversed. When picking up my car in the UK the agent pressed me to add my wife to the designated driver. OK, I know that the spouse can drive without paying an additional driver fee. However, to my surprise, when I dropped the car off my credit card was charged an additional $125. I will never use Avis again, they think I'm a fool, and I will not be taken for one.

BIG SCAM CHEATERS! AVOID THEM COMPLETELY! Never ever book with Avis Car. I booked my car reservation and paid in full 6 months back. I called yesterday and spoke to Calvin, customer service requesting him to prepone the pickup time by 1 hour. However, he instead flatly canceled my booking without my permission and disconnected the phone line instantly and I got the cancelation email immediately, they may want me to rebook car at a higher price and make money. I called them back and talked to at least 5 representatives including their New Jersey head office, but none of them were helpful despite sharing the story in detail and I wasted at least 3 hours of my valuable time over the phone.

I now left with no other option but to book with another car rental company with a very higher price as my traveling is 4 days away. AVIS are big cheaters in the nation. I am completely disappointed, dissatisfied and perturbed on the services, products and workmanship. Beware, never rent car from AVIS AND AVOID THEM COMPLETELY, you will be cheated. RK tel **.

On the interior window of our car, there was a removable sticker that said "This vehicle was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected," etc. The car was filthy, filled with crumbs, sticky, and smelled like old food. Disgusting. If we had had more time, we would have returned to the counter to request another vehicle. When you're shelling out hundreds of dollars, you expect a clean interior. Here is the experience during my recent car rental experience with AVIS. I booked my car rental with AVIS (picking up on APR 6, 2024 at Memphis International Airport, TN and returning in Downtown Nashville, TN on APR 9, 2024). Since my flight was arriving late at night, I chose AVIS because its desk is open until 1:30 AM. In order to secure a rental, I paid in advance.

I arrived at the AVIS desk at Memphis International around 11:00 PM, APR 6, 2024. AVIS rep told me that they were overbooked and no car was available. He suggested taking UBER or LIFT for further transportation. He did not provide any explanation why prepaid, i.e. already purchased product/service was given away to someone else. Instead for further questions he gave an AVIS booklet with several 1800 numbers. He also suggested to come back in the morning to check if rental car would be available.

We waited for 40 minutes for the Lift driver and rode 30 miles to my final destination, Cordova, TN. Upon arrival I called the AVIS customer care desk (1800 number) and was told to call back in the morning (8 AM). Representative also suggested filing a complaint online, which I did. I received a couple of standard email messages with suggestions to call back to Customer Service at 1-800 number.

I called in the morning (8:15 AM) again and talked to rep who explained to me that according to inventory 6 cars are available at Memphis International but I must to arrive in person to confirm that. He was not able to contact AVIS at Memphis International since they did not pick up the telephone. I can confirm that. Tried to do it by myself with similar results. As an alternative to avoid coming back to Memphis International, Rick checked out local AVIS inventory in Cordova, TN location. However, this approach was not feasible because this location does not provide one-way rental. Rick could not explain why. He transferred me to another rep named Alex.

Alex told me that he is from the billing department and could not help me with rental, but will provide me with compensation for inconvenience. He said that it will come in the form of an email message with explanations in an hour. He verified my email address and telephone number. Never received such an email message from AVIS. He also refused to transfer me back to customer care. Instead of that he provided a couple 1-800 numbers (1-866-806-3637 and 1-866-5257521). Neither of them worked. This representative was not polite and cooperative at all.

I called back and talked to Tamara who did not provide any assistance at all and transferred me to supervisor per my request. He was very polite and cooperative. He confirmed that to receive one way rental I had to go back to Memphis International. In order to address the issue he suggested transferring me to another group at AVIS. He also offered me to be present at the conference call with them and assist. Never happened. I was transferred to the rep, who told me that no cars were available to me in the entire Memphis metro area. Per my request she transferred me to the supervisor. This person was pretty rude and uncooperative. She confirmed that no cars were available in the inventory and I had two options: go back to Memphis International AVIS location (30 miles from me) and check availability or to receive a full refund and get a car rental somewhere else.

As a "courtesy", she tried to contact the Memphis International AVIS location with no response. I was also provided with reference number. The message was pretty clear: No cars are available for you at AVIS and it is your problem with your further transportation. Per my request to talk with her supervisor I was told that she was supervisor on duty and the highest level of AVIS authority at that time.

After spending almost two and half hours on the telephone with AVIS representatives I decided to go back to Memphis International on my own. I arrived there around 11:00 AM on APR 7, 2024. Just for clarification, I did not use the rental car which I had paid for almost a day and it was not my fault. Noone offered me any compensation. Instead of that I was suggested to take care of my transportation by myself and on my own expenses. Upon arrival I was given a car pretty quickly. Representative at the desk assured me that the car had CarPlay option capabilities for using GPS from my phone. It was very important for safe driving in unknown geographical area.

The booklet indicated the car was parked in space number: D16. It was Hyundai Tucson and had all the capabilities needed. The Exit representative informed me that it was the wrong car and I must drive around the airport to return it. When I arrived, the Toyota Corolla was parked in the D16 car space. This car did not have any CarPlay capabilities which I was promised. With this car I found right after I left the car rental garage that fuel was extremely low and the tank was almost empty. I had to go back and ask for the other car. I was told that I probably have to wait. The third car (Chevrolet Malibu) provided in 15 minutes worked ok. No apologies were provided. I spent two hours at Memphis International AVIS facility. I was happy to leave as soon as possible.

Two days later (AP 9, 2024) at AVIS Nashville downtown drop off went pretty smoothly. However, to my question why the prepaid amount increased for 22 dollars more, the representative did not provide any answer. I was also not offered any courtesy lift to my hotel. Even though it was only a mile away from AVIS. I was under the impression such courtesy is an industry standard for major car rental companies provided in big metro areas. Later on I was contacted by two AVIS representatives. I responded to both with request for investigation. No response was received back.

According to my rental car experience with AVIS, this organization's operations do not work properly, have many gaps, and deficiencies in customer care. Representatives do not care about customer's needs, provided a lot of misdirections and controversial information. The appropriate communication between the central customer care group and AVIS locations are almost absent. AVIS employees I dealt with did not express any empathy to me as a client and did not provide enough efforts to resolve issues I experienced. I spent almost a day trying to get the car which I already paid for, without any compensation. The compensation for my additional transportation costs was not addressed either. Nobody really apologized to me.

I was charged 700ish at the counter of which I was told 200 was our deposit that we would get back after it was returned in good condition. They stuck us in a Ford Flex, not at all the Rav4 that was promised despite there being other Rav4's in the parking garage. Lo and behold after the trip was over looking at my credit card charges to see no refund of the 200 that the counterperson said I would receive. Called Avis to inquire, they told me that because I was "late" to the counter, which was their fault due to lines/inadequate staffing, I HAD to be upgraded and that I assumed the upcharge in vehicle because I was late to my reservation. Vehicle Rental Experience: A Cautionary Tale

Preamble: A loyal customer with over 1000 rentals and a top-tier membership status, I expected to redeem my 36,000 points for a simple one-way truck rental from Las Vegas to Raleigh.

Objective: Leverage loyalty points for a cost-effective, one-way rental.

Experience: The company’s app malfunctioned, and in-person assistance led to hours of wasted time, conflicting information, and a refusal to honor my points. Customer service (telephone) was a carousel of incompetence, with representatives providing false information, refused to speak with supervisors, and calls ending in hang-ups.

Conclusion: Avis’s disregard for customer loyalty and absence of a complaint department is unacceptable. The final insult was an erroneous charge of $1400 for a service quoted at $850 that was never correctly provided. Avis’s failure to rectify their mistake or offer a genuine resolution is indicative of a systemic issue within their customer service operations.

Final Verdict: Avoid Avis at all costs. Their outsourced customer service lacks empowerment and accountability, leading to a frustrating and fruitless experience. In my case it was a downright illegal theft venture by a well-known company. Test what I say is true, call yourself and ask to speak with a complaint department, not customer service as customer service will not help you if you find yourself in a situation like mine.

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice and support regarding a problem AVIS car rental company. Here’s what happened: I rented a car from AVIS for a trip with my family and friends. When we returned the vehicle, we were assured that everything was fine, and there were no issues whatsoever. But, here’s the kicker – I got hit with a surprise charge claiming there was a smoke smell in the car. The thing is, none of us smoke. We’re all non-smokers, and I can swear there was no smoking during our rental period.

I’ve already reached out to AVIS to dispute the charge and ask for a refund, including the exchange fee, which adds up to $450 + 7 Euros. I’ve asked them to thoroughly investigate and provide evidence if they’re sticking to their claim. I’m pretty frustrated and worried about this unfair charge, and I could really use some advice on how to handle it. Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation with AVIS or any other rental company? Any tips on how to sort this mess out would be a huge help. Thanks a bunch for your support.

Buy their liability insurance or no car. Plus extra this and that. So the $214.45 car rental cost $411.33 with no advance notice whatsoever. I complained to Avis, saying they should provide the actual cost in advance, and all I got was an automatic reply saying I had signed the rental agreement so had no basis to complain. I wasn't asking for a refund or anything, just informing them of what happened, which clearly no real person actually read.

We had a reservation for 2 days with a pay at pickup price of $144 scheduled to pick up at 8:00 AM because the hours stated it closed at 11:30 PM. When we arrived after that time, the counter was still open. We rented the vehicle and expected there would be an extra day charge. But we were not told the reservation rate would change with the early pickup for a small car or we would have sat around the airport for 8 hours. The final invoice was $395.00 for a midsize vehicle. The counter agent never explained that to us and we are very disappointed for this type of service. I will never use Avis again because of this. When I called the office where the rental took place, they were rude and made no apology for the misunderstanding and the 800 number agent was no better.

I rented a vehicle from Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR), 44th Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI and was given a Malibu with 82,000 miles, pulled to the left, made concerning engine noises at speed and unbalanced tires that vibrated. Of course you don't find all these things out till you get onto the highway however, the 82,000 miles was a red flag I should have acknowledged. The fact Avis even has a car with this many miles and in this condition is hard to believe. I reported this to the GRR Avis employee and they offered no solution or seemed to care (didn't get recorded anywhere that I complained). When I tried to reconcile this dangerous experience with customer service post rental, I was told I should have reported it (I did but no one cared) and that there was nothing they could do at this point because there was no way to verify this, which is convenient.

There is also no way to report this on the app or website during a rental, also convenient. For customers and inevitably the person this car breaks on or causes a crash to, the plate number is **. When they say no one has complained previously, I hope you or your attorney find this review. It's sad that companies do not value safety or customer experience and would just assume insinuate a customer is lying, and lose a customer (in this case a whole company) over such a small easily fixable issue. I tried to call customer service and got someone in another country I could barely understand that just repeated lines off a sheet. With that being said, domestic CSR was no more caring or helpful. I was also charged for a whole extra day after arriving late by an hour in icy conditions but CSR has made it clear there is no exceptions to this. Would recommend you book for a day extra and bring it back early due to this.

It seems I am not the only person to receive this level of service from this location or Avis CSR / Corporate which is sad. Eventually these will all add up to be a considerable chunk of business but the damage will be done. I tried to speak with every rep I could about this from calling, to Facebook, to WhatsApp links given by other customers (scam?). The end result was all the same. Sorry YOU didn't handle this but AVIS won't help because it was reported... I think things are not reported and made difficult to report on purpose maybe?

This is the WORST experience I’ve ever had renting a car. I’d love to give this location a “zero” rating! From the hour+ wait in line, in person customer service, not having the type of car I reserved in advance, not being able to get ahold of this Avis location in person when there was an issue with the rental car and the poor quality of the vehicle that was rented. I would NEVER rent from Avis again and certainly NEVER from this location!

Even after vacation, I continue to have to deal with this company to resolve issues with additional charges charged to my credit card (Which needed to refunded after two separate phone calls and an hour+ on the phone!) and tolls charged to my credit card that wasn’t me. PLEASE check all your rental paperwork to be sure it’s correct! Take pictures of the rental car and the dashboard with mileage. They mixed up the type of vehicle that I had with someone else’s rental and tried billing me for it! Now I need to call a different number to dispute the toll charges. What a complete nightmare and waste of my time!

Well, I had a flight that landed in Austin, but was supposed to drive to Killen. The problem was, is the vehicle that was reserved for me was given away to someone else. So I was left with an electric car. The battery ran down faster than expected. With that, I had to locate a charging station. I was told by Austin Avis there was one in Killeen. Not true, Killeen Avis said there was a charging station in Temple, but didn't know where. And they did not answer the phone when I called back asking if they can find a charging location. IF THIS INFORMATION IS NOT AVAILABLE, DO NOT RENT OUT THE VEHICLE!! I was left calling around EVERYWHERE looking for about 2 hours looking for a charging station. By accident, a dealership was nice enough to let me use their station for free, for an hour and a half. This was such an inconvenience.

Avis has changed a great deal since I became a preferred customer. Preferred no longer means anything and in truth rental contracts really don’t mean much to them either. If you’re traveling through Denver international airport avoid Avis at all costs. The Denver office is extremely disorganized. The Avis branch offices in Denver are incapable of communicating with each other or with customer service. Avis customer service, of course, is incapable of providing any solutions to problems with rentals. My experience: I arrived in Denver at 4:30 PM on February 17, 2024, I pre-paid a rental of an intermediate SUV. I waited over an hour for the shuttle bus along with about 50 other people I got off at the Avis preferred counter as I was told and found my name on the board, but there was no parking space indicated for my car. There were at least 100 people in the preferred line. The temperature outside was about 20°F. I waited for two hours.

In front of me in line, were a gentleman from Washington state and his two children who were freezing in their airport clothes. When I finally got to the counter, I was told to go to a parking space. I went to the parking space and it turned out to be an electric vehicle. I was so glad just to get out of the airport. I drove 7 miles towards the interstate highway and the car notified me that I had less than a 7% charge. I was able to locate a charging station and approximately three hours later I had a 10% charge and was able to make it to my destination around 11 PM. Numerous calls to Avis during that time achieved nothing in terms of assistance, useful advice or commiseration. I don’t know why anyone would ever treat a customer this way.

Subsequent calls to Avis offices in Denver resulted in additional frustration, none of the offices were able to switch out my car to the actual car I contracted for and the only solution offered me was that I should drive back 40 miles to the airport and switch the car out. This did not sound appealing to me to go out back out to the airport and wait another two hours in their “preferred customer” line. Reading other reviews here, I wonder how Avis stays in business.

After several request and 2 1/2 hours later finally it was ready. They wanted to charge us for addition drivers that was normal, so my son asked them if they can help for the inconvenience of waiting so long. The rep advised they couldn't do anything so I got up and told them "you got us here waiting almost 3 hrs. and you can do anything?" She told us she can't but she will call the manager. The manager heard me and pop to the front counter and told me they can't discount while being on her cell phone. I then told her again and explain we sitting there for long time and I have to drive 18hrs to my mother's funeral and burial and she don't have no consideration!

She started yelling at me and me back explaining to her being a manager. She very unprofessional and really needs more manager training! My understanding as being a GM for many years is to calm the situation and use her Customer Service skills (That she has none) and provide the best solution to make the customer satisfied - Avis needs to be train and advise employees that Customers are the ones and who paid their salary. (No customers, No Jobs) After reviewing the rating of that store I understand why (2stars that location).

We have been renting with Avis for years in another location for many years and got Excellent great service but they didn't have a van at my location to help us. I will never and will advise many do not use that store ever. Finally - I did got to buried my mom, no one ever needs to go thru this experience ever, Avis need to demote that manager and train more their employees. I truly believe and know we have great people that loves their Jobs, and we congratulate them but hiring inexperienced people to fill position is not the way to go.

When I got home to Tampa Florida, I got to my Jeep in the short term parking area and quickly realized I had dropped my key in the AVIS box in California and I still had their rental car key. I immediately called Avis (customer service as Santa Barbara would not answer). First thing Friday morning, I overnighted their key ($127) charge and sent a note asking them to mail my key. From Wednesday evening to Monday, I spoke to at least 15 different Avis reps who could not help me and I called the Santa Barbara location 33 times and they would not answer.

On Monday, they finally closed my rental out and charged me $1,400 for some bogus fees and I was informed that if I wanted my Jeep key back, I had to reach out to Santa Barbara (again, they will NOT answer their phone). I understand if I had to pay for the additional days without the key but the rental was literally $84 per day. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE.

I made my reservation online four days ago. At 3:00 p.m. today, I went to Avis on Main Street in downtown Kansas City to pick up the vehicle. Victor and his significant other asked for my credit card and driver's license. Immediately, they told me, "We don't accept that credit card." I told him I had reserved the car with it online and was charged. So, I suggested my debit card. Victor asked me for my credit score, and I told him 724, and Victor said, "You should be approved." Then he did a credit check, and Equifax did not approve me. He said, "It must be debt to income ratio." Then, Victor asked me for a voucher code when I reserved the car online. I told him I did not receive a voucher code but only a reservation number.

So, Victor told me he could not rent to me or use another major credit card for the car, plus $250.00. Then, he told me I had done something wrong when I made the reservation online on October 16th. So, I called AVIS when I got home, and Andrea told me I did not need a voucher code but just the reservation. So I suggested that she call Victor at the Main Street location while on the phone to confirm that I did not need a voucher code, just the reservation, but she refused to call him. So, I requested a refund and cancellation. Andrea told me she could cancel my reservation but not issue a refund because she could not see the charge.

So, based on how Victor, Andrea, and AVIS handled me, I will no longer rent from AVIS because they're insensitive and use biased-base tactics. Victor told me that if I had a billion dollars in the bank, they still wouldn't rent me because I did not pass the credit check. And he's been doing this for 43 years while mingling with his girlfriend at work, and he knew I rented from them before. Moreover, I asked to speak to Andrea's supervisor, and she put me on hold for a very long time. AVIS is unprofessional, inconsiderate, and policing with biased-based tactics. I can't attend Oklahoma to see my daughter perform for her homecoming.

Upon arrival for my pick up I was notified that I needed to provide a form of payment in person for a deposit and incidentals as the form of payment used online somehow could not be used. I did not have the same form of payment handy on my person so I just used my debit card to complete the rental process and picked up my car. A day later I noticed an $1100 charge on my debit card from Avis and promptly called them to report the error. They notified me that this was just the deposit and it would be refunded once I returned the vehicle.

Having found nothing on their contract that matched this 100% of rental value as a deposit I still elected to wait for the refund once I returned the vehicle based on their direction. After returning the car, the money was not returned (shocker). I called Avis and let them know that they charged me twice for the same rental and that I needed to be refunded for their error. This led to a cycle of 5-10 day refund promises that have stretched this lack of correction to two months from its start. Now the confirmation of the proper refund has turned from a admission of the error and processing of the banking return to a processing of my claim that will take me 10-14 business days just for an internal panel to review dispute several drinks of my refund to date.

How they think they are able to decide whether or not to return the money they wrongfully took from me or not is beyond me... So here we are, in a situation I can’t think of any other way to describe as THEFT of funds with them playing a game of chicken, taunting me to take legal action to rectify the situation. We were instead given a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which of course didn't match the paperwork we had so our first problem was at the gate trying to get out of the airport. We finally got on the freeway headed home when the transmission on the car failed and would not go out of first gear.

We managed to get off the freeway to a gas station parking lot and called Avis roadside service. We waited for 6 1/2 hours for a tow truck, making multiple calls to roadside service to try to facilitate. We were told if we left the car unattended before the tow truck arrived we'd be liable for any theft or damage to the car. Was charged $346 due to their error. Made several attempts to have amount adjusted and again customer service at two locations and online gave NO help. Still trying to get issues resolved. If you have plenty of time to waste from poor service and questionable automobiles then Avis is your best bet.

I have now had this problem w/ Avis several times. They charge $250 to $450 for anything from two soda cans left in a vehicle (“excessive garbage”) to dried mud on driver’s mat after camping in an SUV. Both “required” detailing. No photo documentation or detailing invoice. They insist that their TOC as quoted by CSR basically says cars must be returned perfectly even though they only clearly reference a $450 charge for smoking.

I learned all of this after three calls. Several hours on hold. The “escalated CSR” saying I needed to escalate further and I said I would wait (knowing she could not hang up if I was on line). She then finally admitted she was the final stop. It took over an hour, but she removed the charge. I wore her down. Man, it was not worth 5+ hours of time to get back $250, but I learned a lot about Avis. I am giving up my preferred status and points and will never rent from them again. Curious if anyone has had similar situations with other rental companies. This was a second for me, and I am done w/ Avis.

My experience is and was very poor. I rented a vehicle with Avis on July 12, 2023. The first vehicle I picked up reeked of cigarette smoke, so I requested a different car to which they did accommodate. While in this vehicle, I was driving on the freeway and a large truck kicked up a rock and chipped the windshield. Didn't think too much of it, figured they would be able to get it repaired and send me the bill. Well they did and they couldn't just repair, they had to replace the entire windshield which came to a grand total of $1,156.53.

As soon as I received their correspondence I reached out immediately to get this matter resolved. When I initially called in the gentleman I spoke with assured me that my claim could be resolved by my insurance company Liberty Mutual, and if I didn't want to go through them he could reduce the amount owed by 20% (Seems Scammy but ok). I opted to have my insurance company resolve it and filed my claim. The claim was approved almost immediately within 48 hours, to which Liberty sent an email to request how they would like to proceed with accepting payment. AVIS did not respond to their email, so I emailed AVIS directly 2 times, to which I did not receive any response.

Fast forward to today, and come to find out my credit card was charged the entire amount, and they are unwilling to refund, reverse, or help me in the customer service department. The claims department they've forwarded to me is stating over an hour wait to speak with someone, and if I would like to speak with the supervisors, supervisor, it will take 24 to 48 hours. The experience I received is unacceptable, and I will be leaving my review in across numerous websites, and travel agencies IE (Expedia, Travelocity, ETC.).

Avis has the most idiotic car pick up system at John Wayne airport. First, Avis is not even listed as a rental car company. When you come out of baggage claim, Hertz and others are one-way and Budget another day another way. So after you have put in Avis into your map app and figured out where to go (down the elevator to the garage and walk past just about every other rental agency), you get to an Avis office where you stand in line (it was 20 minutes for us at 1:00 pm on a Wednesday). There, you get your paper (yes, paper) reservation, but no car key. Then you walk to another place in the garage and you stand in a long line and wait (it was over half an hour for us) until you’re able to present the paper you just got from the other place to the person who will give you your key.

Even if you have made a reservation online, if you get in that second line first you will be sent back to the first place to get your paperwork. It is so stupid because the only thing you get at the end of the second line is a person who hands you your key after looking at the paperwork. There is no reason they couldn’t give you a key after standing in the first line. I saw several people after standing in line for a half an hour be sent back to stand in line to get their paperwork, only to have to stand in the 30 minute line for a second time.

I prepaid for a rental car with Avis using PayPal. Avis told me they cannot accept paypal as a payment method because there is no card number to check the last 4 digits on. So the day of vacation avis charged me the full rental amount, plus deposit. After I had already paid in full and should have had a $300 hold on my credit card. So now I have an authorization and have already paid a total of $1,049. This is day 1 of my vacation. I ask for my money back from avis and paypal. Neither company will look at it or try to resolve anything in anyway. I am quite upset at this point. But hey everyone going on vacation with a family of 4 has multiple extra thousands of dollars available to go with right? I end the vacation 1 day early. Lose the money paid for prepayment on the day's activities. $260 gone. Come back home and return the car 1 day early. So a total of 6 days.

I call avis and they are barely willing to refund me for the day I returned the car early. Only after arguing with the phone representative for 20 minutes. Now 4 hours on the phone with paypal the supervisor named Ron finally looks at the request. He told me for 5 minutes or more that it was not possible to close out the case today. I argued and kept asking him to look at the information from 7 days ago. Finally they agree that I should get my money back and they will send it in 3-5 days

So to be very clear. Paypal advertised Avis as being a business partner that provides “deals” with. You can prepay with Paypal. Once you go to pick up the car Avis says “I need the last 4 digits of the card used to make this reservation”. You say Paypal is a digital wallet that doesn't provide the last 4 digits of a card as it's not a credit or credit card.

Avis says: we don't accept prepaid reservations without it. Then they charge you the full amount, plus the incidentals fee on a credit card and pretend your prepaid reservation doesn't exist. Avis should have immediately refunded this. And went further to help offset some of the damage they and Paypal caused in my personal life.

San Fran Int.- Avis - very poor experience. I was supposed to get a free upgrade. That didn't happen. The car that I was given had two completely bald front tires and the safety alert system didn't work for the left side. After spending 2.5 hours on the phone - being transferred to a total of eight people (because I kept getting told that helping me with a car exchange was not something that they could do - even though the last person who just transferred me to the next person said "I will transfer to the person who can help you"). I had to drive that unsafe vehicle to the return point thirty-five minutes away. I was told a new vehicle was waiting there for me. When I got there I was told that location was never contacted and they didn't have a car for me. Maryanne did work something out (Kudos to her!). She gave us a car that was going to be picked up for transfer to somewhere else.

This new car was an upgrade, but was absolutely filthy inside... Ripped carpet, noticeably stained seats (black), shoe prints on the back of the front seats, a smoky film on all of the inside windows, pieces of the interior were detached and there was animal hair everywhere. And the wiper blade on the driver side was detached and shredded. Nonfunctional. Thank goodness California is dry this time of year. The car was returned cleaner than when it was picked up. I was on a short vacation. I spent three hours total time on the phone with Avis. My plans for the first night were cancelled because the first car was not safe to drive. The next day more than half a day was wasted on phone calls and car return/pickup.

I asked for compensation. I was told I could have a $50 off coupon good for my next rental. My plans had to be rearranged, I lost out on planned activities, I spent all those hours going in exasperating circles and I'm offered a coupon. I said no. She offered me $50 refund. That doesn't even cover the time I spent going in circles on the phone. Oh, and when I returned the vehicle I was once again handed off to "someone else" (x2) to get the refund. The last person said his manager would call me. Four days later and I still have not heard from the manager.

I need not tell you how dangerous it is for a woman to be alone in a parking garage at an airport in the middle of the night. I ended up Ubering to the hotel at 2:00 AM, after spending about 30 minutes on the phone with AVIS personnel, only to find out they could not help. I asked if I could get an upgrade on the car rather than a refund & was told, "No, we can not help you with that."

In addition, when I picked up the car this morning, it was FILTHY on the inside. There are used styrofoam cups, trash, fresh coffee stains on the console, and a baby toy. I asked if I could get a CLEAN car and was told, "I am sorry, we can't help you." At this time, the attendant became rude. I was on a time crunch to get to work, so I took the dirty car. This has been the worst car rental experience we have had, EVER. Now, after 4 hours of sleep and a day of work, I get to clean someone else's mess so I can use the car this weekend and not be assaulted by other people's filth. This is terrible customer service; it's unreliable, especially concerning safety. I called customer service this afternoon and a lady created a case number & sent the information over to another department. Before the end of all this I realized that in reserving my car I accidentally said I would be picking it up at 9pm but meant to pick it up at 9am so I see where one more day should be charged to me. I agreed to the $115 they wanted to charge me for that. My math (old school) says I owed $235 above my original $475. Giving me a total of $710 for my rental. In the hurry to get to the airport the following Saturday it wasn’t until I got to the gate I had a chance to look at the email receipt I was sent by Avis. They were charging me an additional $699.

When I got home I called Avis who would not listen to the fact that I had already prepaid $475. She then Said “the best I can do is give you a $250 refund" to which after waiting three week for something that was supposed to only take 7-10 days I went to pay my credit card. $710 on top of the already paid $475. Oh, what a delightful three years it has been, being an esteemed patron of Avis! Their exceptional service has left me utterly speechless, and by that, I mean I'll never be renting with them again – EVER. It all started with the genius at the DTW airport (pickup) Avis rental, who generously provided me with their version of the truth about gas refill charges. But wait, there's more! At the drop-off airport, they must have thought it'd be a real treat to charge me for rental insurance, despite my clear and concise decision to opt-out. Bravo, Avis, bravo! And I can't forget to give a standing ovation to the Avis manager at the Westchester Country Airport (drop-off) for his enthusiastic performance in arguing with me for over 1.5 hours. Such dedication to customer satisfaction is truly inspiring!

Just when I thought the show was over, they surprised me with a grand finale – charging a generous $309 to my credit card without my consent, while I was disputing the settlement amount over call with a service agent. Of course, I called their esteemed customer care service again, who assured me that the $309 would eventually find its way back to me. They even gave me a fancy Case ID:**. I am still waiting for it like an owner looking for its lost puppy.

Oh, how I cherish the memories of this wonderful escapade! Not only did Avis take my money, but they also graciously took away a couple of hours of quality family time during my trip back to Detroit from New York. Truly, they have a knack for making every moment count! So, dear friends, if you ever feel the urge to rent with Avis, be sure to turn on recording devices while you talk to them. And don't you dare miss out on the Gas Service Option, for it's the cherry on top of this unforgettable Avis experience!

I had a disappointing and an unpleasant experience with Avis Car Rental recently. I picked up my rental from the Las Vegas Airport location on 4-July-2023. However the car that was assigned to me did not have engine oil and had the oil change warning light on. I had to return to the rental counter to report this and was assigned another vehicle but the same issue occurred again for 2 more vehicles consecutively. After the third attempt, I asked the agent at the counter to check for himself and ensure that the vehicle was in good condition but he was rude and declined and said that it was not his job to check and that I would have to get the fourth vehicle and check for myself if it had sufficient engine oil. The agent lacked customer service and made my experience horrible.

I asked to speak with a manager and he said that he was the supervisor there and that there was nothing else I could do other than getting another vehicle without any guarantee that it would be in desirable condition. On the fourth try and after wasting almost an hour at the location I finally got a vehicle that was in satisfactory condition but at the expense of a disappointing experience and waste of time. I believe Avis Rental car does not keep or inspect their vehicles properly, do not have good customer service and lack management at their pickup location.

I call roadside assistance and inform them that I rented a SUV from the above location at 315 Garrisonville Rd, Stafford Va 22554 and the SUV didnt start, the rep informed me that he would look for the nearest Avis to pick up another car. I said ok and the rep mentioned Dulles (IAD) airport, Informed the rep that Dulles was over an hour away.

They informed me that an Uber would be sent to pick me up and that I would get a text of that and the information to pick up car, that I didn't need to stand in line just to go to the exchange lane. The Uber arrived and took me to Dulle airport, I arrive at the airport and go directly to the exchange line, there are 2 people in front of me a ** gentlemen and 2 men of maybe middle eastern descent, they both were help by the rep who looked to be of maybe middle eastern descent. Once the rep helped both of them, we went over and help the regular customers in line, I wanted over 30 mins to see if he would come back or anyone would acknowledge I was there and no one ever did.

I watched the regular line clear out 2 times and then I call your customer service on the phone and explain to them that I was told to come to the airport and go directly to exchange line that I did not have to wait and that the customer service rep helped 2 other people in line that was in front of me but never acknowledge me, the rep on the phone stated that this was not supposed to happen and told me to go directly to the front of line. I informed the rep that I would just go to the regular line because it seemed to have cleared out 2 times and I was still waiting. Once I got to the front of line with the rep, I explained to the rep that I rented a car from 315 Garrisonville rd in Stafford Va, the car never started so Avis roadside assistance Ubered me to the Dulles location and told me to show them the text I had to pick up a new car and that I had the keys.

The rep called the manager who was a short Hispanic woman with black hair who could have been in early thirties, she was not wearing a name tag, and neither were a few reps that were working. She explained to the manager what was going on and the manager with an attitude stated "She (me) has the keys and I don't know where that car is so I can not release a car." I told her that the car was still on the Avis parking lot because it never started. The manager stated that I needed to call roadside assistance take the keys back to them and roadside assistance would need to verify they had car with a text for me to show the Dulles location. I told manager that I was Ubered over an hour to the Dulles location, why can't I just call roadside assistance and have them verify and she told me, "No I needed to take the keys back."

I called roadside assistance and explain to them that I was told by the manager that I needed to go back to the Stafford location and take the keys back, I had already been Ubered an hour to the Dulles location and that I needed to be on the road, the rep stated that they were sorry and stated that they would set up another uber to take me back and once I go there, they would have to get me an uber back.

I also explained to each rep the whole story on what happened. So the rep ordered me an Uber and the first one ordered show that they cancelled the trip, the next one called and stated she was at gate and couldn't get in. I directed her to where to go and eventually, she cancelled, I also spoke with another uber who cancelled trip, so I called roadside assistance back and they ordered another Uber. In the meantime informed the rep that I hope that the location had the car once I came back and he had me go back in to ask the manager and the manager told me when I return to go to exchange line, I informed the manager that I waited in that line over 30 mins and no one helped me.

The manager told me to go to the preferred customer's line when I returned. In the meantime, the tow truck driver called me and asked was I at the car and I told him no because total of 3 Ubers were ordered and 2 cancelled, I said probably because it started to storm. I told the tow driver that I was told that I had to return the keys to him then he would have verify the car was picked up, and so the driver verified which car it was while I was on the phone and put the Suv on the truck and asked me why couldn't I stay there and he just verify he had the car and then I could pick up rental, I told the tow truck driver that the manager stated I needed to take the key back to him. He informed me I could have mailed the key back.

I also told the tow driver that I was already on the way and the Uber driver needed to complete his pick-up. I then hung up with the tow driver and call roadside assistance and inform the rep what was going on and that I would need to schedule an Uber back, the rep informed me that if I had already had an Uber that per contract this was my one complimentary ride and that I need to pay for the one back.

I told rep I would not pay, it was not my fault that I was sent to pick up car and wasn't told to leave key in car or anything. The rep stated that I needed to stay with the car until roadside assistance came to pick up car. I told the rep roadside assistance never scheduled a to pick up car because the car was still on Avis lot and the rep stated the protocol was for you to wait for roadside assistance to come pick up car before I ubered to airport. I informed the rep I don't know what the protocol is for Avis. I don't work for Avis so I don't know what your protocol is and I asked to speak to a manager, the rep stated that the manager would tell me the same thing.

I spoke to the manager and the manager told me I needed to pay for an Uber also and that I needed to wait for roadside assistance to had picked up Suv first before going to get the other car that was the protocol. I told the rep like I told all the other reps, there was no tow scheduled. I was just sent to the airport with my text to pick up car and didn't have to wait to go to exchange line and at this point that I was frustrated and if I wouldn't pay for another Uber or a car that I could not get to, the manager on phone stated that the Uber would have to be charged to car and I would have to dispute this with customer service, also the tow truck driver was on the phone as I spoke with the manager, I told her I would call customer service.

I called customer service which was reservations. The rep stated that they he couldn't do anything on his end because he was in reservations but I could go online and contact customer service with complaint and that once it goes to roadside assistance that changes the claim number. I told him ok, called back to roadside assistance and spoke with another rep, a young lady and explained her the same issue as the current reps and she stated the same thing that I should have waited for roadside assistance and I told her roadside assistance was never scheduled because the car was still on lot.

I told rep I keep hearing the reps stating they should have, but they didn't so it was not fault and they are telling me I need to pay for another Uber and I was not paying for another Uber. I let her know that I had been dealing with this since noon and here it was like 9 pm and it was getting dark and I sitting in front of the Avis store in Stafford Va, with one way back to pick up car. The rep then took my information and said she was sending an Uber, and I asked did I have to pay for it and she stated no.

The Uber comes, I arrive back at Dulles airport and went to the preferred customer line the rep name Michael asked was I a preferred customer and I said no, I was here earlier and no one helped me in that line after standing there over 30 mins and the manager told me to come to this line, and he was kind of rude stating he didn't need to hear all that and asked my other information.

I told him that I was frustrated and had been dealing with this all day and he didn't want to hear that. I asked what the manager name the little hispanic lady show with black hair that was there earlier, he wouldn't give me her name and called up someone on phone then I showed him my text. He states that anyone looking at this number it show the car is here so they would have had to do research. This was not true because if that was the case I wouldn't of had to go back to the other lot, he gets my information and give me the information on where to pick up car and the rep Michael state that he just helped me.

I was also told by the manager on phone that the manager at Dulles gave me incorrect information. To sum this up this was the worst experience ever, it took me 10hrs to get a rental car, Avis because the lack of customer and rudeness caused me to miss an important event, I got home at 1 am. I expressed to first rep on the phone that ordered Uber back to car to meet tow truck driver. I sure hope that Avis compensates me dearly because of the stress.

SUMMARY: DON'T USE AVIS, EVER. DON'T PREPAY EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'LL SAVE MONEY. JUST AVOID AVIS ENTIRELY. Worst experience ever. We prepaid $481 on my wife's card. When we went to pick up our car it was filthy and had dings in various places. I literally got greasy gunk on my hand when I opened the trunk. The check engine light was on. We asked for another car and the lady on duty said there wasn't another available. She wrote us a little sticky note to show that it was in bad condition when we got it. When we returned the car after our trip they charged us an ADDITIONAL $235 on my card for gas. We showed them the receipt to prove that we had filled the tank right before bringing it back. They then refunded that additional charge of $235 back to my card.

The employees were going to take $200 off from the original $481 to make up for the damaged vehicle and poor service. He put it on the receipt. He said we just had to call customer service to make the final change since it was prepaid. Two months of calling and ten phone representatives later we still haven't received the money back. The first nine representatives had claimed to write notes on our account and that we will receive the money in 7 business days. Each time they said 'we gave you $235 back so you already got your refund.' With great frustration we explained that the $235 was from an additional charge on a different card because we were wrongfully charged for gas. The promised $200 off the original prepaid $481 was never returned. Instead they returned a measly $12.

They'd finally claim to understand, write notes in our account record and say the problem will be fixed in a couple days. When we'd call to check on it and ask why they hadn't done what they'd promised, the new rep would act like this was the first call and seemed to have no record of any previous discussions with the previous reps. It's like starting from scratch. The dentist is more fun than dealing with these people. (No offense to our hard working dentists out there.) If this review seems too long and detailed imagine how frustrated we've been dealing with lying phone reps and a company giving us the run-around.

The tenth phone rep was condescending and rude. He said we had to give private credit card records to prove our case despite the fact that the previous nine reps had claimed that the refund was already approved. He laughed at my wife's frustration and refused to tell us his name. He said he didn't have a supervisor we could talk to and no other number to call. He finally hung up on us. It's not like my wife was rude or cursing at him to cause him to act that way. This company is exceedingly unprofessional and sketchy. We finally went through our credit card company to dispute the charges completely and are receiving the entire $481 back. It serves AVIS right for such bad treatment of their customers. BOTTOM LINE: DON'T USE AVIS, EVER. DON'T PREPAY EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'LL SAVE MONEY. JUST AVOID AVIS ENTIRELY.

Avis will scam you like any other scam artist. Never go to AVIS. I won't make that mistake again. I filled out the full contract a week or more in advance. When you arrive at the Avis counter you expect your car ready, and no changes or additional charges. Maybe the question about do you want to pay for gas in advance? There never was any mention of TARIFF. Or PWD. I had already included CDP or Collision damage protection and theft protection. I rented a large SUV for a family vacation in Cabo MX. Paid for the vehicle in advance but when I checked out there was a 62% upcharge for various items. I rented the SUV for $1300 US dollars. When checking out there was an additional $810 US charge.

    Airport fee - $46
    Tariff - $431
    Roadside Assistance - $20
PWD (partial damage waiver) - $151
ALI (additional liability insurance) - $49

and then 16% TAX on that for another $111

I am an avid traveler and have dealt with many rental car companies. My experience with AVIS was by far the worst experience I have ever had. I got in late (1:00am) to Hartford Airport after flying all day. Made my way to the AVIS counter where I had reserved and prepaid for a "LUXURY" car. The counter experience was actually fine and typical. I found my car and it was the smallest Cadillac they sell. No one could fit in the back seat except for a small child. The car was not clean and smelled of marijuana and incense to the point it made you gag. I was so tired and still had an hour's drive to my final destination. I did not go back to the counter. That was my mistake.

Once I left the airport and got on the highway, I noticed the car pulled dangerous to the left. It was to the point that I was fighting to keep it in the lane. I made it to my destination in New Haven safely. I rode the entire way with the windows down because of the smell. The next morning I called Customer Service to tell them about my experience. After 30 mins of being on hold, the service agent was clearly not in the US and not in an office. I could barely understand her accent and there were dogs barking in the background. Customer Service could not do anything for me but read pre-written lines from a script. It was almost comical.

After another 25 mins with this service agent it was clear they couldn't help me. They advised me to call a local Avis counter. I called the nearest counter and told them my situation. The gentleman on the other line laughed at me and said, "Good luck finding a replacement car in New Haven." I called Customer Service back. Again same situation. On hold for 30 mins, got an agent with canned answers, poor English and very little or no authority to actually help me. I hung up and called the Emergency Roadside Assistance line. Actually got a a very nice gentleman who seemed to be very helpful. He said he would set up a new car at the local counter for me. I told him that I had already called that counter and they didn't have any vehicles. He assured me that he had spoken with them and a vehicle would be there.

I received a text confirming my new reservation so I was confident this guy told me the truth. I drive the car to this counter location and the gentleman behind the counter must of been the same one I spoke to on the phone because he started laughing and said no one called him and they STILL do not have any cars. Frustrated, I call Emergency Roadside Assistance back. I guess because I had an open ticket at ERA with my phone number, the prompts would not allow me to get back to a live person. I called customer service back and they had to have ERA call me back. They proceeded to send me to another counter in a different location and assured me again they would have a car for me.

I got another text message confirming my reservation. I drive to that location.... NO CARS. Completely frustrated having dealt with this situation for 8-9 hours. I parked the car at my hotel and used Uber the rest of my stay. Needless to say, they of course charged me full price for my rental. This company is broken so if you want to avoid these headaches, I highly suggest you use a different rental car company.

Updated on 7/1/2023: It gets WORSE! When I arrived at Seattle airport to return the car, I was checked in and closed the ticket, no problem. Nothing said other than thank you. Then I got the receipt via email as I was headed back to my hotel. CAD 1463.71!!! (The price on the initial agreement was CAD 345.63.) When I looked at the receipt, the majority of the charges were from “Taxable Products/Services.” When I called Avis, they had no explanation and just said that was the price I agreed to. No, no I didn’t. I immediately called my credit card company to report that charge as fraudulent.

I then looked at my other rentals from Avis (3 in 3 weeks) and saw another ridiculous $300 charge for fuel pre-pay from our rental in Calgary AB. Even at the highest price for gas I saw (CAD 1.80/liter) and an empty tank (67 liters per the manufacturer) that would be CAD 187.60. Again I called Avis and asked for an explanation and was told that was the price I agreed to. No, no I didn’t. I called my credit card company to report that charge as fraudulent and continued on my vacation. The charge I had for a rental in NJ was as expected, so at least that was good.

When I got home, I called Avis, who now was expecting payment. As I went through each over-change with the agent, they basically told me “That was entered in error. We’ll correct that charge and credit the bill.” No explanation. Really? What the heck is going on with your Canadian branches Avis? Are they just entering charges just to see if we’re paying attention? That’s borderline criminal. I will never again rent from Avis. Never.

Original review: Partly directed at this Avis location (Hornby Street in Vancouver) and partly directed to the main company. One star because I can not give zero. Beware, this location has NO preferred member amenities. There is ZERO signage directing you anyplace. You can NOT go straight to your car! You need to stand in line. Whatever you do, don't listen to the Avis main number directions, they have NO idea what goes on at this location.

It was a Saturday and there were at least 40 people in line in front of me. I called the main Avis number and they advised me to just go to the car... Not an option since they have no signs or QR code to scan or anything... Then they told me to just go to the counter and tell them I'm a preferred member. I did that and I was told they don't offer any preferred member benefits, "everyone is preferred," and I needed to go back in line. I spoke to the manager and he told me the same thing. So I got back in line and called the Avis main number again and they told me they were unable to do anything for me... Thanks Avis. Back in line and lost about 10 places... What a waste of my time. I will NEVER rent from Avis again. Ever. I'd rather walk.

Reserved a vehicle for May 23, 2023 at the Albuquerque airport to be returned 14 days later at the Salt Lake City Airport. They charged a $400+ adding fee for that different drop off. Okay, maybe they pay a driver to drive it back to Albuquerque? Clearly not the case as our vehicle has North Carolina a plated so just another scheme to offset their "lower price".

We pre-paid the contract and I thought no problem: if we need the car longer we can just extend and pay the additional days. If we finish earlier we can return it for a refund of unused days. Oops, Avis policy goes only one direction! 30 minutes late adds another day charge, so you know they can do another transaction but I will always be an increase to their fees. So while Avis may seem to paper out as less expensive, they have policies to quickly make up the differences. IF I ever rent from Avis again (and based on their overall reviews here it may be wise to avoid Avis), I will make sure to add up these hidden fees before concluding my analysis. They apparently don't provide one. You will also be charged a $1.00 per day for their Frequent Traveler Program, yippy, more hidden fees. If you're going to a state where there's tolls, you also won't be given a transponder and you could be liable for those charges as well, which is more if you're going online and paying instead of using a transponder. After a half an hour of trying to fix the seatbelt, they gave her a third vehicle. At that point, she had already lost about 2 and a half hours of her day.

I called customer service several times and one rep told me to call back after my wife was done with the rental to get a full refund of the prepaid amount. After returning the vehicle, customer service told me the best they could do was a 20% refund. After arguing and telling the rep that we were lied to, he offered me a 40% refund. I then received an email which shows I now accepted the insurance fees for $125 total which I never did. This took three calls to resolve with Avis. At first they only wanted to offer a minimal partial refund until I threatened to file a chargeback for the full amount just to recover my time spent having to get this resolved did the representative offer a "one time courtesy credit".

It makes ZERO sense that someone could even add insurance ex post facto to a rental they've already had out for several days! Oh, and when I went to pick up my "full sized sedan", they had a 2-door coupe waiting for me. She argued with me that it was a "full size" until I showed her Avis's own website that stated "All full-size models are 4-door cars" and they found another vehicle for me. I would never use Avis again after this ordeal. Terrible app, terrible billing practices, and terrible customer service.

Updated on 05/05/2023: I recently reserved a rental with a paid for in full with a received confirmation only to have it canceled and informed that it could take 7-10 days for my refund. Well, it's been 10 days and upon calling for update, I'm now told it could take up to 15 days. Informed the the barley English speaking customer service rep that I would be filing fraud paperwork with my bank and local police dept. They were like, "You're welcome to do so." Damn straight Baboo. Rep was like, "I promise you that it was already processed but wait a couple more days." Police reports seem to work best. Going forward, I will pay premium for the service as this company is nothing but bad service at best.

Original: I recently reserved and paid in full for a car rental only to be declined at the counter for reasons unknown, but suspect insurance as was asked several times my insurance company name. I tried to explain to rep that rental was already paid for in full but was told he couldn't override the computer. Brilliant, can you provide me a ride back since I was dropped off and had been there for half an hour and was the only one there at the time. Rep could not multi-task and was obviously flustered. So I'm charged/paid in full with a confirmed reservation only to be declined for who knows what reason and when contacting support, connected with broken English at best and on hold for a long time for a supervisor who informs me that it could take 7-10 days for my refund that I had immediately paid for during the online reservation.

I will be filing paperwork with my bank as paid for services that I was declined and never received not to mention the service was the absolute worst that I've ever received from any car rental. Shame on AARP for suggestion such a company. I had a bad feeling walking into this Avis located in Lawrenceville, GA as there were dirty diapers in the parking lot in front of the store. If peeps read these reviews prior to renting from Avis, they wouldn't.

Went to airport to pick my car at 8am and was greeted with a Seinfeld episode of reservation. They know how to take the reservation but don't know how to hold it, which is most important part. I had booked a minivan and they didn't have any minivan. Instead gave me an SUV, that's not right. When I was taking my old parents for a trip, minivan helps get in and out easily and is much roomier. I can tolerate SUV to some extent, but when I returned they charged me $72 for gas while I filled the gas up to the brim right before returning, in fact I topped it off!!! Had to call and wait in line for half an hour before getting a human on phone, I hope they will return my money!

Heads up that Avis Canada is misleading customers in that the charges are not always in Canadian dollars, they charge in USD, which results in much higher cost. We downloaded the Avis app, booked a vehicle in Greece based on the price shown which we expected to be in Canadian dollars (since no currency was shown), reviewed the email receipt (from Avis Canada) showing the same number in the quote but they charged our credit card this number in US funds vs Cdn funds.

We immediately cancelled due to the excessive cost & Avis did provide a credit on the card after verbally agreeing the app was misleading but refused to compensate us for the credit card transaction fees (2.5% for the initial reservation & another 2.5% for the refund). No fault to the credit card company here. Avis refuses (after many attempts) to compensate us for their error in their misleading app to show the currency that would be charged. So again... heads up that Avis is misleading customers in that the charges are not always in Canadian dollars, they charge in USD, which results in much higher cost.

Then, I downloaded the app, I completed all the information and I tried to rent a car one online, thinking that may be the result would be different using the website. This time, my application was not only accepted but they also charged the full bill (310 USD) to my credit card. When I went to the airport to get the car, they needed to check my documents -which seems reasonable- but I had to fill out the application form all over again! What is the "advantage" of having an app or a website if at the end you will have to go through the whole process again?

Thirty minutes later, once they checked my documents and wrote all my personal data in the computer they told me that they couldn't give me the car because the system blocked my application. No explanation given, nor apologies for the inconvenience. Yet, like I said earlier, they charged the total cost to my credit card. They told me that I was going to see my refund within 48 hours, but that didn't happen. I called the agency several times (the office where I tried to get the car is in San Luis Potosí, Mexico) and they never took my phone call. I had to call the customer service in the US and I was told that the agency in Mexico never processed my refund. So, if I wouldn't have called them, they would have kept my money. At the end I got my refund but I wouldn't recommend this rental service at all.

From there we went directly to Avis at the Arkansas Airport and reported this. The Avis Rep checked everything and gave me another paper printout with a full description of the vehicle in case we get stopped again.

Within a week of renting the vehicle, we returned the vehicle to Avis in Colorado. In January 2023 I was charged 120 dollars. I called to inquire as to why. The Avis Rep asked if I had received a citation, any letters or messages from them or from any Law Enforcement Agent. I did not. The Rep will not disclose the reason for the withdrawal from my account and wants me to go to a website, to agree and pay for a fine we did not receive. We did not travel through toll roads. So, we did not receive a fine, However, according to Avis they did, and they will not refund my money. Avis is a scammer using tools to suck money from your account. That’s the way I see it. After a month after rent along my car from Avis, there was an unknown charge on my credit card. I contacted my credit card to dispute the charges. Upon the credit card’s investigation it turned out Avis was charging for damages on the odometer and smoking in the vehicle. The car was checked in at 6:32am and the car was not inspected until 8:03am. The Avis representative checked out the vehicle, scanned the UPC, checked the odometer along with the level of gas in vehicle. Told us it was ok and we were good to go.

Let me start off by saying, what happened from 6:32am to 8:03am? No one in our family smokes. The same way we are held responsible to inspect the vehicle prior to diving out the lot. Avis should be also held to that standard which is we thought happened, when we were told “it was good to go”. I am inclined to ask for the from the time the car was dropped odometer, surveillance footage along with the GPS. This is ridiculous to blindly charge consumers expecting we bend over and and make a false accusation and charge us a month after the fact?

I was charged the usual fee but along with that I was charged a separate charge of over $400. I immediately reached out to Avis customer service. They asked me to send my statement. I had to wait two weeks for my statement to come out but I sent it as soon as it did. They then asked me to provide a 23 digit transaction number which was not in my statement and of which I have no way of obtaining.

The authorized charge did have a 13 digit transaction number which shows up on the credit card statement. So it boils down to this: Avis charged me over $400 illegally as I did not authorize it then asked me to provide a number I have not received nor am I privy to that number in order to get a refund. I’ve spoken with a supervisor who found the charge on her end but they denied the refund for not having enough information. When I say this is a nightmare, it’ is just that. I will never deal with Avis again and I urge anyone not wanting to find themselves in a billing circle to consider my comment. It is real and it’s doing my head in. I have reached out to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau but as of now there is no resolve.

There was no wait time in picking up the car. The car was clean and had no unpleasant odor. And one thing I can safely say about AVIS, they have no problem upgrading a customer.

This was my second time experiencing this with them. Years ago when my son was in college, I would normally rent a Tahoe/Yukon to go get him from college or to take him back to school. There was this time they gave me an XL suburban, I was so grateful for the extra space. I truly appreciated that gesture. Overall my experience renting with AVIS has always been good. I really hate leaving negative reviews, and the people at the counter did try their best to help us, but I feel compelled to write this one to warn anyone else. Hopefully you can learn from our experience. We reserved a car for the Guatemala airport and we chose Avis because in their options they offered border permits for other Central American countries. The ones we needed were Belize and Honduras. Once we confirmed the reservation though, there were no instructions on how to arrange for this. After a week of searching I reached out to corporate customer service, and eventually got this reply: "Unfortunately, the only way to contact the location would be via phone number: (502) 2324-9000. We are very sorry that we cannot offer a better solution." (clipped)

I did as instructed and Carlos finally gave me the location's email address. His reply is below: "I’m glad to be of help, I have pulled out your reservation and add a note of your request, concerning our phone call early this morning the cost of the 2 permits letter is $205.00 and you can pay for it once you arrived to the counter, could you please send a picture of your passport we need this information for the permits as well." (complete)

After providing copies of our documents and being assured that all was in order, we didn't have any contact until we showed up at the counter and THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY CARS. That might sound like a normal occurrence to a seasoned traveler, but we are definitely not that. We were told right away that because we hadn't paid when we made the reservation (I would have but we didn't get the option) they didn't have to keep a car for us. What? What's the point of a reservation then? Anyway, they tried their best to find something and managed to dig a car out of somewhere for us, but because they ignored my reservation they also failed to apply for the border permits ahead of time.

The car they wanted to give us would have had to stay in Guatemala, which would essentially wreck 4 days of plans we had in Belize and Honduras. We almost took the deal anyway, since there were no other cars available and we were stranded at the airport, but they tried to make me pay $300 for a damage waiver even though I had my own policy that covers international car rental and even brought a copy of the policy with me. We finally refused and left with no other option than to sit at the airport and figure out what to do. Just awful.

Anyway, if we had done nothing we would have lost around $1,500 in non-refundable reservations and had to find a place to stay for the next four days, costing us even more. What we did instead was booked a next day flight to Belize, cancelled 2 of our hotels and had to book 2 new ones on the fly plus a cab ride to and from the airport. Avis's failure to reserve a car per the terms of our reservation ended up costing us a total of $1,952.40. That's a pretty steep price because of a $125.00 rental, and we didn't even get the car!

DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH BORDER PERMITS. If you absolutely must rely on this service, I would suggest emailing them every day the week before your trip. Make them tell you the VIN of the vehicle they're going to give you, it takes 3 days to get Belize permits so make sure they do what they say they're going to do. If you can pre-pay for the car, do so. That's all I got, thanks for reading and hopefully these folks don't wreck your week like they did ours.

Every rep I spoke to promised I was being transferred to right person, gave me the 'direct phone #', or would 'make notes' on acct and it was all lies. He told me this just before hanging up on me. I was waiting for him to give me some options and when he hung up. That rep knew that by referring me to that manager that it was not even possible.

If I could give 0 star, I would. I dealt with 2 reps from Avis in 2 different locations. I dealt with 2 complete crooks. I think they're trained to be dishonest and just squeeze every penny they can in any possible way. The 1st guy told me I needed to get insurance. I didn't. I told him I was insured by my American Express credit card. He didn't want my wife's card (same business card).

Then I tried another card my bank blocked. I told him my Chase credit card would work. I was so tired of arguing, it was midnight, I gave another credit card without noticing it was a Chase card, and that I didn't need to pay for insurance (it doubled the rental price). The guy knew it but didn't say anything. I tried to get a refund the next morning, they said no. The first guy even recommended I prepaid my gas. When I looked at the screen, it said "$75" (the rep forgot to mention that). I told him it seemed awfully expensive. He argued it would be at least $85 elsewhere (absolutely not true). It turned out to be a very small car. Full tank cost less than $50. The bottom line is: Run away from AVIS and from car rentals as a whole I would say. I hadn't tried TURO so far, but from now on, I think I will!

My husband had a rental agreement with them for 6 months. We had no issues with the car whatsoever. Our nightmare started two nights ago when we were home. A towing truck showed up and started towing the car. We have tried to confront the towing person to explain what it was all about but he hadn’t even explained who sent him or why. Wouldn’t even let us pick up our personal belongings and accused us in front of our children and neighbors of stealing the car. What was obviously incorrect because our contract was still going on.

We had no one to turn to since it was pretty late so we had to wait until the morning to start making phone calls to try to figure out what was this all about. Of course their customer service had no answers and anybody whom we have been referred to couldn’t come up with answers. They even failed to contact the branch who apparently ordered the towing (Saint Louise Missouri, aka airport branch). We never got a phone call from them in regards the incident or our belongings. Even their own customer service couldn’t get a hold of them. The phone number provided of course leads you nowhere when you try to get answers yourself. Definitely expected to sue them soon. Wouldn’t recommend even my worst enemies to rent a car from them. Still trying to recover from this terrible nightmare. Haven’t had a sleep in three days now.

Do not rent from them! We were in Costa Rica last week in December 2022. We rented a car from Liberia airport. First things first - Avis does not have a counter at the airport as advertised. Instead, you must catch a shuttle to take you to their location. Once we made it there, their representative lied to our faces that it is Costa Rica's law to have an insurance and that the insurance policy offered through our Chase credit card needs a ''special letter'' type of approval from Avis headquarters. We decided to purchase an insurance policy, we believed them. The representative clearly stated that insurance will cost us $43 per day. We had a car for 6 days, meaning total rate will be $258. Guess what; we returned home, couple of days later our credit card was charged for $343.

I emailed Avis immediately asking what the hell is going on. They replied stating that $258 was the insurance rate BUT there were taxes and fees charged on top of that. When I informed them that we weren't told this, nor that breakdown bill was presented to us, they apologize and ended the conversation. Never again with Avis.

I rented a small van on our recent trip to Italy. When we arrived, the vehicle we reserved was not large enough to hold all 6 of us with luggage, so we upgraded to a larger van. Unfortunately, the new van wasn't properly prepped prior to renting, so it was not cleaned and only had a half tank. Again unfortunately, the agent printed up the contract showing a full tank. He marked my copy as half-full, initialed it to verify, and told me to return it to Rome with same amount of fuel. We did so, explaining the situation to the agent in Rome to make sure there was no misunderstanding. He assured me all was well and asked to keep my copy with the agent's verification. I did so.

Big mistake on my part because now my proof was in the hands of the company. Upon returning home I found that Avis/Budget had charged me $158 to refuel the half tank that was "missing". After many back and forth emails, the bottom line is they refuse to honor their agents' promises, insisting I provide proof--proof that they hold. They did not contact the agents to confirm by position and refuse to refund the money. There are several rental companies in Italy. Take my advice and find one that is ethical and honest--not Avis/Budget.

I caught the flight and started my work the next day in Canada. They did not send the receipt by e-mail. A week later I went to rent a car in Tampa and they mentioned that I still have the above car in my possession and had not returned it yet. It was 7:00 a.m. and it took 2 hours for the customer service to start to answer the phone as they are based on the Central time. They still could not figure out what the problem was until an agent looked at the computer and realize it was somebody else's name on my contract but with my identity: my driving license number, my date of birth, my credit card number and address but with a different car. They put an end to that rental that day but they still charged me for a week that I had not had the car.

They sent me a case number in the email to solve the issue but it hasn't solved yet and put me in do not rent list! When I call now even case number is on the other person's name and they do not recognize my e-mail. The customer service hangs up on you and you have to call again and wait. They have very poor communication. The bottom line. Be aware of fraud in this company. On top of it there are extra charges! We rented a car on the coast of California, so we returned it with a small amount of sand on the floor mats that would take five minutes to be vacuumed out when they do the normal cleaning between customers. Then, two weeks later, we received a letter in the mail saying it was dirty and our credit card would be charged $125. Ridiculous! This was equivalent to almost two days of rental cost. When challenged on the cost, they sent some form emails reiterating the charges. The company offers a low price upfront and then gouges you with extra charges that are not honest. I had just gotten off a very expensive flight to see a sick relative on an emergency basis, I had already paid in full for this car from Avis, so of course I expected them to discuss this with me.

When I approached the desk in bewilderment (Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson airport Avis) three really nasty Avis employees - huge men (I am a small woman) ridiculed me and bullied me when I was practically in tears, explaining that I had a sick relative and needed that car. And to top it off, I have not seen a refund. Maddening, frustrating and full on traumatizing. Avis is the worst. I asked for someone to come and pick me up so that I could look myself and I was told that it wasn’t there and they could not give me a ride. I decided to walk back 3 miles to the rental car location and upon arrival I went to the rental car and looked under the seat, in the trunk and everywhere else.

Then the day of the rental I told the agent that I needed to shorten the dates, and asked for a refund. He should have asked me to cancel and do a new rental but instead he said at the end those charges were considered at the end. That was a lie. Because I prepaid, a portion of it was non-refundable. That was the second problem.

Finally, 10 days after my rental I receive a new charge for e-Tolls, and instead of applying that charge to the remaining amount of the prepay, I had to pay it by myself. I ended up paying in advance (advantage for Avis), using the car less days and not getting a refund (advantage for Avis), and paying the eToll in a different charge because their systems consider it a total different charge. And all this as a preferred customer renting with them for many years. They are putting a price on loyalty, and I am paying it, but not anymore. On August 14, 2022, I made a reservation through Costco Travel for an Avis rental car. The reservation was for an economy car for pickup at 11:00 am on September 24, 2002, at the Four Queens Hotel and Casino, 202 Fremont Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101, US. The total cost of the rental car was quoted as $316.16. When we arrived to pickup our car we were told that: (1) our reserved car was not available, (2) Avis was sold out of economy cars, and (3) the only available cars were SUVs and specialty cars. This was the start of Avis' elaborate Las Vegas Rental Car Upcharge Scam ("The Scam").

This is how The Scam works. 1. Your Avis agent tells me that our car is not available and nothing else in our reserved car class is available. 2. Your Avis agent then tells me that the only cars available are SUVs and specialty cars, but in order to get one of these there would be an upcharge. 3. Your Avis agent, in typical "I am just trying to help you" scammer fashion, tells us that these vehicles typically have an upcharge cost of ~$200/day and he then tries to convince us he is doing us a big favor by cutting that upcharge cost in half (i.e., only $100 per day more).

    4. I call Avis' "customer service" to report this scam, and the customer service agent (Charlie) tells me that there is nothing he can do to help me unless I have a signed contract. 5. I am now in Las Vegas without the car I reserved and I therefore have no other choice but being forced to accept the scam rental that was extorted out of me by your Avis agent at a new cost of $797.66, or a total upcharge cost of $491.50. 6. I then called Avis' "customer service" to see what they could do for me now that I had a signed contract. They only offered 30% of the upcharge. I would not accept this. I refuse to be the victim of the Avis Las Vegas Rental Car Upcharge Scam. I fully expect that the upcharge of $491.50 that Avis managed to extort from me will be refunded immediately.

I was quoted a price and the actual cost was over 110% GREATER when I turned in the car! Part of that cost was and additional charge for fuel...I traveled less than 60 miles in the vehicle and added over 3 gallons at the station next to the rental garage. There is no way that car was returned needing gas! I understand the requirement of fees etc. however the secrecy of the fees is not a good practice. Additionally, I understand everything is now electronic but I should have been given the chance to talk about the charges prior to leaving the car. Years ago, I had a similar experience with AVIS so I stopped using them. I gave AVIS a second chance - stupid me. I will will be advising my company to work with other rental car companies largely because of the lack of transparency and accountability. Horrible experience.

I rented a vehicle to take my daughter to college. I was going to put the charges on my credit card, but was unaware of the $200 deposit on top of the charges. I couldn’t cover it on my credit card, so I had no choice but to put it on my debit card. I returned the vehicle on time, with a full tank and perfectly clean. They told me it would take 5-10 days for my $200 to be returned. It’s been nearly a month now and I still haven’t received my deposit. Every time I call the rental location I get transferred to some person outside of the country who tells me I have to talk to my bank. It’s not a bank issue. Banks don’t keep you from accessing your money. Only Avis does that.

Someone replied and asked for me to email them. I did that and nobody got back to me. I made a reservation a week ago. I received a confirmation email the same day. I received numerous reminders via email each day leading up to yesterday. I even filled out the check in to save time at pick up that was emailed to me. I get to my assigned time this morning and was told they don't have anymore cars.

The guy first tried to say it was because I made the reservation yesterday. I informed him and showed him that I made it a week ago and showed the confirmation emails and reminders. He then says the airport is suppose to provide cars but they didn't receive them but he could TRY to get me a car this afternoon. I had somewhere to be this morning thus the reason for the time slot that I picked. I told the guy that doesn't help me and I now will have to scramble to hopefully get a rental from a different company. This totally unacceptable especially considering I reserved the car a week in advance and even received a reminder this morning via email. This totally inconvenienced me. This was my first time using Avis and it will be the last. No need for anyone to try to give an apology in response to my review because that's not going to cut it.

It is obvious from the numerous complaints below that a pattern of deceitful practices and fraud pervades Avis' business model. Like many complaints below, mysterious charges appeared on our credit card after renting a vehicle in Oslo, Norway (August 8th-12th). We paid $667 for the initial rental, $100 deposit, and $60 for insurance. Three days after returning the vehicle, Avis charged an additional $511. No explanation was offered. We promptly sent an email asking for clarification on the charges but have yet to receive any explanation. However, an additional charge of $120 appeared on our credit card on August 20th. Again, no explanation. We did not received the deposit back either (the car was returned in excellent condition). We tried to contact Avis directly but were unable to reach anyone. We deactivated this card and reported suspicious activity to our banking institution.

Needless to say, we will not use Avis again. It is a striking confirmation of this company's customer service ineptitude that customers must write a poor review in order to garner any response from Avis. We highly advise potential customers to not give Avis a credit/debit card number as it appears they are using hidden and deceptive clauses within the rental agreement as legal cover for fraudulent charges.

My recent Avis rental experience definitely ranks up there as one of the worst travel experiences I’ve ever had. Paid for a “premium” car, but the Toyota Avalon they gave me smelled like an ash tray, and it had this nasty lime-scented air freshener pinned to one of the vents. Also, driver’s center vent was not operational. A few days into the rental the right rear tire blew. I called Avis roadside assistance and explained the situation…and they were so rude and unhelpful. Wouldn’t even tell me if I would get assistance that day…or if I’d have to sit in the car all night long in the 110+ degree heat until they could dispatch someone. 3+ hours later, roadside assistance finally showed up, however I felt completely unsafe driving the “premium” car with a bubble spare in the 110+ degree heat…so I drove 30 minutes back to the airport and exchanged it for another car.

They wanted to give me another Toyota Avalon, but I refused…so they gave me a high mileage, unimpressive small Lincoln SUV…which to me was pretty beat for a “premium” rental car. This “premium” car was quite an adventure to drive…was real shaky, particularly on the highway…seemed clear to me that something was wrong with the steering/suspension/engine. Then in the 110+ degree heat the a/c started blowing steaming hot air; and I had to exit the car because it was simply intolerable. Fast forward the clock several weeks…just got a $220 charge on my credit card from Avis for the flat tire roadside assistance. Horrible experience all the way around. Will never rent from Avis again.

I arrived in Kansas City to pick up my car and was told by Avis that my company had chosen the "mystery car" option. I asked what this meant, and she said that whatever they had on the lot. I was directed to the very last car in the lot, past the shaded cars (in horrific heat) and was shocked at what I saw. The car had a big dent in the driver's side front bumper and was marked with a big white marking. I assumed it was marked by Avis. In addition the car was filthy inside and out. I don't mean a little dirty, I mean it looked like it had been driven off-road. I couldn't even clean the windshield with the auto wipers enough to see clearly when the sun was shining on it. And the windshield was also very dirty on the inside.

The doors, windows and back hatch were so dirty that every time I had to get something out of the car, my business clothes got dirt all over them. It was clear that this car was returned to Avis in this condition and then just rented out to me without any service. I was shocked. I had to drive this vehicle for 4 days. I also found out that two co-workers were given the "mystery car" options as well. One was forced to drive an older model very small sports car with bucket seats and couldn't get co-workers in the backseat. The other was forced to drive a pick up truck with no way to transport anyone either at our company event. To make matters worse, when I returned the car I was interrogated by Avis on the damage to the car. They finally did some research and admitted that the damage had been done by the previous renter. By the way, this car was not cheap. It was $600 for 4 days.

I would give 0 stars if possible. We paid to rent a Mercedes Benz in Italy and instead got a Toyota Corolla. They wouldn’t reimburse us any money. The vehicle was damaged and filthy. Passenger airbag was off the entire time and there was no way to turn it on. Will never use this company again.

When I went to book a car for an upcoming trip I found a car and there was two discounts totaling $80-$90 off my reservation that were automatically applied, one being pay now and save. I can't remember what the other was specifically. Everything looked good. I agreed and booked it for the price shown. I immediately get a charge and a receipt and the price is not what I agreed. The discounts were removed. Immediately used chat support who could do nothing other than confirm the reservation and tell me to call customer service. It was already after hours. So I call in the a.m. and the number says that due to an emergency situation they were not available. I find and call other numbers. Finally get ahold of someone. Explain the situation and there is nothing they can do. That is their policy. They can't add the discounts and if I cancel there is a $50 fee that they can't do anything about. So beware.

I have rented two separate cars from this company. Each time, the car tire air pressure was low. This last time, I got a flat tire. Before I even picked up the car, the first option they gave me, the car on the lot, had a giant dent and scratch on the car. I told the lady, and she was unfazed. They do not care about the cars they give people.
