Booked a pickup truck. Arrived to find there were no pickup trucks available in any size. They couldn’t even check the inventory at other locations. They made me ring the other locations myself to check, in which I was out on hold for 30mins. In the end the venue was closing and I had to take an SUV in fear of not having a car at all. The rep suggested I drive over to their airport location and see if they could swap the car for the class I had booked. I went over there and they said that they would not swap for anything other than an electric vehicle because they had to hold their vehicles for reservations - what the hell am I? I’m a reversion that you didn’t keep the vehicle for!

This played out like a Seinfeld episode. Why bother taking the reservation if you don’t keep the car?! That’s the most important part. Anyone can take a reservation. I complained to their customer service and got a standard response about not being able to guarantee a make and model. I don’t even care about make, model or size. Just get the ** class right!

I love Avis, never had a problem in the past. I had a rental on Dec 19th 2024, after 40 days I was charged damage fees without any detailed info. This is really upsetting as usually there is an employee receiving the cars as we drop it. Not on Dec 19th though. Started to play with AI to tell the story.

So I made a reservation this past Saturday for a rental to pick up on Monday morning so Sunday evening I was watching the Super Bowl and checked my email and I have a email stating that my reservation has been canceled. Not only canceled but they took $150 of my money that I prepaid when I booked the reservation. So not only did they automatically cancel my reservation without explanation. They also took $150 in mine. I called them instantly and of course they were closed that Sunday evening. Monday morning I called them. They tell me that I canceled my reservation and that because I canceled my reservation $150 was deducted. So I explained to the agent or the rep that I did not cancel my reservation. I would not have done that.

I need a car for two weeks. She stated again anytime you cancel a reservation $150 will be deducted. I said ma’am, I did not cancel my own reservation. I was watching the Super Bowl. Long story short I asked to speak to a supervisor she put me on hold came back to the line and state at the Supervisor agreed to me getting my $150 back. I haven’t received it as of yet so I can’t confirm if it’ll be done or not I feel like the whole company is a scam. I ended up booking another reservation through budget. I only use this company because of my AARP discount. I’ve learned my lesson. I will never ever use Avis rental car service in my life. Beware.

Avis is a total unreliable scam. I was on vacation in Italy and rented a 9 passenger Mercedes van but per the contract it was switched to a similar Opal van. The Opal had no windshield washer fluid meaning it was never checked between rentals. On my way back to the airport, the van's defective engine lights came on and the van broke down. At 5am the Avis roadside assistance was unavailable. This breakdown cost me, $800 cab fare to the airport and $8,000.00 in additional airfare with British Airways.

I did make it back to the United States. However, Avis has sent me a bill for renting the broken down Opal van. Avis had to pick up the van with a tow truck. Now, Avis is such a scam, they actually sent me an email, that thanked me for returning the van at 6am to Avis in Milan. The email is an obvious cover-up. I believe, Avis was negligent, in renting me, an unsafe vehicle. I am requesting Avis pay all of the additional charges relating to the van breaking down. Avis is denying all responsibility.

My wife and I were excited to take a road trip. We were greeted by an unfriendly female agent at the counter who never smiled or greeted us with hospitality. Perhaps her crooked wig and disheveled appearance should have been a sign of the incompetence that would follow. The 7 passenger SUV that we wanted was unavailable despite reservations and we were told the lot was filled with dirty cars that would need to be cleaned. The female agent proceeded to make an executive decision to put us in a green SUV of her choice. She then said it would be a 30 minute wait for the SUV to be cleaned.

I will say that she had a polite tone, but the manager who looked like an Elvis impersonator approached us in a defensive manner with a million excuses and we were sure he was about to tell us his financial problems. He clearly did not focus on solutions over excuses. He then threatened to cancel our reservation when he was asked to stop the excuses. We will never rent from the crooked wig customer agent with the Elvis impersonator manager. His song and dance of excuses was nothing but exhausting and a dark cloud over what should have been a simple transaction. Sadly one other agent, with a cane was more helpful than the 2 stooges. If you are a customer who likes punctuality and competence don't waste your lifespan at AVIS. Never again-.

Have been using Avis since 1992. Their prices were always good and their service used to be good until the last 6 years or so. I've had multiple cars with low tire pressure when I picked the car up. I had one car that had clearly been smoked in recently. They tried to cover up the smell with fragrances that smelled almost as bad as the smoke. I very rarely get the size car I want. I usually ask for a compact because I want the best gas mileage. I seem to get whatever car they have on the lot at the time. It might be an SUV that I really don't need. These issues have been going on for about 6 years since I moved to Norman, Oklahoma. I will start using another rental company and will no longer use Avis due to these recurring issues.

Worse yet, they told me they can't give me refund because I have prepaid. I called customer service and was told they can't do anything during the rental, I have to call after the car is returned. Which I did, then I was told they can't do anything except waive the charge for gas, which I thought was given to me due to the inconvenience. I will never use Avis again!

We rented a Chevy Malibu at Savannah (GA) Intl airport Nov 23-30, 2024. Arriving at night, we waited 45 min to see the Avis/Budget clerk, the only one there. It was dark, and we couldn't see that the windshield was cracked at the bottom on the driver's side. The car smelled of smoke & had trash on the seat. In headlights, we could see the crack. In the morning it was very visible. However, we were now 40 miles away and so we didn't drive back and report the damage. No one is there to inspect or receive the returned car. We were then charged $470 for the windshield repair a month later. It appears that they never checked this car after the previous renter turned it in. I sent a letter disputing the charge, but they will deny any refund to us.

As part of my work I travel a lot and that also means I rent a lot. I mostly go with Enterprise/National and never have any major issues. The cars are clean and customer service is satisfactory. However during my last two trips I decided to change things up and try Avis for the first time. They also had an attractive special so I wanted to earn points for that. I rented a car from Toronto to travel to Montreal and back. The moment I entered the Avis rental agency in Brampton, Ontario I was received by a very unprofessional and somewhat rude representative. There was no welcoming atmosphere and I felt rushed.

The car I received was filthy. Smelled bad and it seemed he just hastily wiped it down with some wet wipes before giving it to me as some spots were still wet where he wiped. I was in a rush so accepted the car. I immediately decided I was not going to rent from them again. Two months later I decided to rent again so I can earn points. This time my trip was to California. I rented in Anaheim. Lo and behold, same poor customer service and filthy vehicles. I requested an upgrade and was told they had nothing for me. I had to actually stop at a gas station to buy Lysol wipes to clean the car. So this is where I step off and promise to never go back to Avis or Budget again.

Avis called me 24 hours before my reserved trip to tell me that they are out of minivans. I booked this trip to my parents for Christmas back in September. The "manager" of Avis in Eatontown told me that all surrounding areas had no minivans only SUV's. So, I said "OK" as long as it has three rows and will not charge me the difference since this is not my fault. The rep told me there was nothing and nothing in any surrounding areas except maybe Newark. Which then I replied okay I'll take that and go there. She then told me no, I have to call.

I was so aggravated that I told her that this is ridiculous, how could they not account for this? So I proceeded to call the number she gave me in which I spoke with a rep who was able to find a minivan at Newark. However, he told me he was holding it for me but the price difference was $170 more which I did not budget for. I told him since its not my fault they should price match. He agreed then sent me over to another department in which no one after an hour, never answered. Luckily, I called the number from another phone and received a call back only for them to tell me my reservation was not held and there were no minivans at all. WHAT???

Avis left me with no car for the holidays to get to my family 1000 miles away. Thanks Avis! They were no help and all the manager from the first call said was I'm not going to take this personal as I expressed that I was truly disappointed and angry. Who wouldn't be? No help at all. I will never book with Avis again. I was also told well if I paid I would get my refund. Seriously? You just cancel people's reservations because of a mess up on your end? Unacceptable....You need better policies.

I call their customer service and the representative assured me they show the car was returned on 11/25 and immediately rented back out. I asked for written confirmation as I don't want to be arrested for GRAND THEFT AUTO. I received a signature required letter on 12/7 ... DEMANDING I RETURN THE CAR. Waited 40 minutes in line to get it checked out (this was November and it was cold). Finally got the car. Drove it 3 hours, stopped to get a meal. Came out to a flat tire. There was no spare. Called for assistance. They said to use some type of canister to fill the tire. That wouldn't work. It was dark out and Avis was really of no help other than to tell me they were going to tow the car. I got a ride to my destination with a relative and rented a car from another company. A month later, my charge card was charge $1129.40. No notification or explanation. Called their customer support and got nothing. Just someone reading from scripts. Talk about a poorly run organization, not to mention their behind the back dealings. The people on the phone were of no help and non-caring. Better to avoid Avis at all costs.

I would prefer to write a minus 5 stars review on AVIS. I rented a car in Main more than a month ago. The car was basically parked most of the time, since I was attending a workshop. I returned the car at the Bangor International Airport; nobody was there to receive the car or provide me with a return receipt. Last week, I got a letter saying there was tire damage and that my card was going to be charge an additional $83.00 dollars.

They never provided prove of the damage (photos or video), which make me wonder if this is just a business practice from AVIS to drive more revenue. Nobody checked the car when I returned it, they charged me extra money without proof. I am guessing they do this regularly to many people across the US, so how much extra money they are bringing to their business??? If you want to charge me more, the least you could do is to show me proof of the damage. I'm not happy and will never use AVIS again. I no longer trust them.....and I will challenge the credit card charge. VERY disappointed.

Recently I rented a Nissan Rouge from the Portland, Maine airport, driving it 75 miles to attend a reunion. I was alone in the car with a small, hard-sided carry on bag which I placed in the cargo area. 2 days later I returned the car to the airport, not having used the car in between driving to and from the airport. About 2 weeks later I received an email notifying me that I was being charged $250 for cleaning. When challenging this, I was provided pictures of some stains on the back seats (which I never used).

I’m quite certain that the photos were from a prior rental, but since I had no proof, I was charged for the cleaning. Several lessons learned: always take before and after pictures of your rental car; don’t accept a car with high mileage (the one given me had over 45,000), and don’t expect that just because you’ve been a loyal customer that you’ll receive any different treatment. I rarely do reviews unless I believe it might really help someone else. I would give a zero rating if I could. Rent with this company at your own risk. If they make a mistake they will not honor it. They will leave you stranded. My brother and I had a reservation to pick up a car at the Alabama Shuttles Worth airport and I called the location 3 x's to make sure we understood everything we needed to know. This was after I called customer service and was given incorrect information. I do not have a driver's license and he does not have a credit card. As a former Avis employee (25 yrs ago) I knew he could rent the car, but things change so I wanted to confirm. (customer service told me I couldn't pay with my card at the end, which I know wasn't true) What I thought was confirmed and I was going to be able to change to my credit card upon return. I was also told that we would need to show proof of flights coming into and out of Birmingham airport.

We thought we were set. When we went to the Avis counter we were refused a car. The agent ran a credit check on my brother's debit card which had $12,000 on it and we were told it failed. (I don't remember a credit check when I worked there but I called anyway to get all the details I needed) If any of the agents that I spoke to during any of the 3 previous calls had mentioned this we would have made other arrangements knowing that this might happen. This was the purpose of the 3 calls. Now we were stranded with no car in a city where we didn't know anyone, we were visiting the resting place of deceased relatives and wrapping up some business.

We called customer service, they didn't care. All other car rental companies were sold out. They had no cars. The Magic City Classic as well as another big event was taking place. I couldn't believe Avis just left us like they did. Lucky for us we explained our plight to Miss V at Hertz and she found us a car. They also ran a credit check and it was successful!!!! The rental cost $150.00 more than my Avis reservation because we had to take a premium car, but I was just glad to get a car. Thank you Miss V at Hertz. Never again Avis, GOOD BYE!!!! (Upon writing this review, I found an article on the Better Business website which stated that in NY where I live, charges have been brought against AVIS in NY for breaking the law by refusing to rent to individuals without credit cards, they have been ordered to pay NY states $275,000 for this violation).

Terrible customer service from the start. The telephone agents are beyond rude and they don’t listen to the questions you ask. I had to repeat myself repeatedly and then confirm to ensure they understood- even after clarification I had to correct the misinformation they had written down. The latest person talked over the top of me and wouldn’t provide answers to my problem, stating that the person at the counter didn’t set up our contract right and it wasn’t her issue. I asked to be transferred to a supervisor and she stated he wasn’t in today so someone would call me within 48 hours…. We spent 1.5 hours in line when picking up the car and they didn’t have any cars available when we did manage to get to an agent. They stated they only had 8 people cleaning 2,000 cars so we should understand the delay. Do NOT rent from Avis.

I found some minors scratches on the car and advised the attendant, he said "yes we know don't worry". I returned the car prior to 7am as such office was closed "took a video" and dropped off the keys. a few hours later a bill shows up for $455 for small scratches. I sent the videos to Avis Madrid. Both pick up and delivery. They claim the pick up is not accurate and date is not correct and that I will be charged for damages. THIS IS FRAUD!

DO NOT TRUST AVIS! I rented a Jeep 4 door from Avis and paid a little extra for it (2 day difference was only like $20 more and since I drive a Jeep and we needed the space it seemed like a good deal). When we got to the counter we were informed that there were no Jeeps and that they could give us a Nissan Rogue. We said we would really prefer something bigger as the Rogue is not as big as the Jeep, but were told that was all they had and that they were in the same class and price. I said that the Rogue is actually in the intermediate SUV class which costs less and she told me I was wrong.

It was 930 at night and we had a 2 hr drive ahead of us, so we took the car and left. I have since been in touch with AVIS who now admits that they are not the same class and the pricing was different. (No kidding: I have looked every day at numerous locations thru Expedia and Avis sites to make sure I am not mistaken and the Rogue is $10-$20 cheaper every day on both sites) but they are trying to claim on that day at that airport that the Rogue was actually $32 more! LOL! Every day, everywhere the Jeep costs more and yet on this one day I got lucky and the Jeep was more? I admitted that I didn't have proof (I certainly could not have known I would need to take screenshots as I never imagined they would lie like this), but come on?

Lying to a customer when every day the website shows a higher price for the Jeep and then trying to cover up their mistakes, lazy employees and their lies? Terrible. I'm disappointed that no one I have spoken to at Avis takes the issue of their employee lying to a customer as serious as I would have expected, but I guess they assume most customers won't take the time and effort to share their story of being scammed. Super disappointing and something I will share with the BBB as well. Buyer beware!

AVIS locations are either owned and operated by the AVIS corporation or they are independently owned and operated as a franchise of the AVIS corporation. The Westfield Mall AVIS location is independently owned and operated and should be your first stop for car rental needs. Even within AVIS's paradigm of corporate and franchised locations this store stands out as exceptional. AVIS corporation hasn’t quite figured out how to cease 3rd party reservations (Priceline, KAYAK, etc) at locations whose inventory runs out and we were allowed by AVIS system to book through Priceline a vehicle at a location with zero available cars.

Upon arriving at the location, we were informed there were no vehicles available at any local AVIS except the Corporate AVIS airport location. Our reservation was amended to pick up at the airport and notes were entered on our reservation to ensure the airport would charge us the price guaranteed by our initial reservation. We diverted to the airport location only to be told that our reservation would not be honored at the price we booked on Priceline because prices are higher at the airport and agents have no mechanism for adjusting prices. We were told we would have to pay double the price we booked on Priceline if we wanted a vehicle. After speaking extensively to customer service the only option we were provided was to pay the full double price and potentially receive a credit after returning the vehicle. This was unacceptable to us, we declined, and we returned to the location were initially booked to pick up.

There we explained our situation to "Jeff" and he was very understanding and recognized that it was important to make sure our initial reservation was honored and we were able to rent a vehicle. He explained that the computer system helps efficiency, but that the people whom represent AVIS have a duty to ensure the consumer is treated fairly, with dignity, and that contracts should be honored. Jeff was able to procure a vehicle and make sure our initial reservation terms were honored, which meant we were not stranded without a vehicle and we did not have to pay double our reservation price. Jeff took it upon himself to not only represent his brand with integrity, but to do it because it was the right thing to do.

We did not cause a scene or raise our voices, we did not have to, because Jeff immediately recognized the injustice in the Airport location dropping the ball and rather than lose a customer AVIS retained a customer. This location is excellent and their actions are exemplary in a time when artificial intelligence is taking over customer service and the few humans that are left are atrocious. Definitely, check this place out for your rental.

We rented a car in Lisbon, staff gave us a car that they even said themselves isn't reliable. It was driven ONCE and broke down on the side of the highway.. LOTS of black smoke and leaking oil.. Car was about to BLOW UP. We were stranded on the side of the highway for 5+ HOURS with no water, food or bathroom.. Police officers had to help us. Avis sent us the opposite direction to an office that was CLOSED. Missed a train we bought tickets for a month in advance. I paid for a rental (three weeks beforehand), and when I showed up for my rental, the counter clerk informed they had given my rental away!!! They informed me and my friend that due to us being an hour late, they gave the car away! Not only was this a contractual fault, but this is also unconstitutional for a pre-paid customer! It's a holiday weekend and the car was prepaid, yet they made an "Executive" decision to give my car away. This act is a BREACH of the contractual terms! The contract states that a rental hold (prepaid) has 15 hours before declared a 'No-Show.'

As a paying customer who is technically under a contract, how is this justified?! There are many car rental companies out there. In an economy that is already difficult, PLEASE do not rent from an unethical company like Avis, and DEFINITELY DO NOT rent from this location!!!! After the 10th business day, I called again and they "escalated" to the second level and told me that some issue was ongoing with my bank as they "tried to do the refund and the bank did not authorize" I called my bank and cleared with them that NOTHING was going on with the account, called AVIS back and was told to wait another 7-10 days.

I waited 13 days again, and today when I called, this absolutely terrible customer service representative told me "There is nothing I can do, this is an international charge, it says here that your card was blocked when we tried to do the refund, we need a proof from your bank that the refund was not done, and I cannot do another request for a refund or I can lose my job, also international charges takes 21 days to go back". Well dear fellow agent, you are not a good customer service representative, and shouldn't be handling such a hard position. I have called my bank to open a dispute charge, and will have to wait another month, but at least I won't have to deal with this agency anymore. I am NEVER going back to AVIS, I would rather pay extra for a different company than save a few dollars and have to deal with this service.

They charged me another 100 for the second reservation because they gave me a car that didn’t work. An employee yelled at me when I returned the car because I took too long to get out of the car due to cancer treatment. They told me they aren’t required to give their names so I don’t have anyone to even refer back to about the car price difference.

The customer service team told me they were crediting the rental and then didn’t. I followed up and they said they didn’t mean they were crediting it. I’ve never experienced a rental situation or customer service like this location and social media customer service for Avis: I don’t even understand their responses. If you read the reviews for the location, it’s common that it’s the worse experience anyone has had with renting a car. I went out of my way to be patient and even tipped the person working 40 when I picked up the car after the 1.5 hour wait - simply because I thought they were having a rough day.

We were told to contact Avis anywhere along our trip and they would help us. We were sent to Rochester, Buffalo, Fort Wayne (2 locations) and spent hours out of our trip trying to remedy the issue and even paid money for odor absorbers, odor masking, and eye drops due to burning eye issues.

We had 2 passengers suffer throat irritation, coughing, and one passenger suffered nausea when in the car after it sat in the heat multiple times. We all had eye irritation and sinus burning after the first day. My husband, who has nodes on his lungs and was in an accident the day before our trip that caused him to have bruised ribs and swelling on his spine, had breathing irritation that exasperated his lung issue and caused him greater discomfort.

We tried to replace the vehicle many times, and on 2 occasions were treated very unprofessional by employees at the Avis rental sites that we had been sent to by the call in service number. Not once did they show empathy or give us a feasible solution. We feel this should be made right as we paid over $1,000 for the vehicle that brought a negative and even harmful effect on our trip. With no real help from Avis associates.

Note, this happened at the rental agency in Barcelona airport. It took us more than an hour to get the car, and there were only about 4 people ahead of us, some guys were kind enough to let us pass ahead given that we were in a rush. It took this long even though everyone did their-online pre-checkin. When we returned the car instead, the staff basically took the keys and rudely shooed me away, even when I insisted to do the car check with them and that I should sign.

The staff people, given that there was no one else around, could have easily just done the check with me, instead they turned their back to me, pretended that I wasn't there and just said "If you filled the tank then it's fine lady, we'll just take the keys". Of course an hour later, when I was at the gate in the airport, I receive an email that they are charging me 400 euro for damages (a.k.a. a scratch) + out-of-usage costs (i.e. the car needs to sit at the shop 1 day to be repaired so it loses them money).

To top it all off, at the counter when we got the car we switched the first driver to me, the agency took my credit card and then proceeded to charge the second driver's credit card, which they had on file from the booking - EVEN THOUGH THEY TOOK MY CARD AT CHECK-IN AND EVEN CHARGED ME THE DEPOSIT FEE. So now, all the documents have one name on it, and they charged the damages to a credit card with a different name. To this day they have not rectified the error. Without this correction, I cannot claim insurance from my provider. Please, if you must rent from them, do not trust these people as far as you can throw them. Otherwise, just go with another rental agency.

I've been a loyal customer of Avis and have Avis Preferred status. I received a letter after returning my latest rental to the OAK location that I'd have to pay a $450 cleaning fee for "excessive dirt and sand" with "heavy severity." I rented the car for 11 days and drove it 1,500 miles with 5 people in the vehicle. We took great care to minimize messes in the vehicle. We wiped our feet if there was dirt and didn't eat anything in the car. The rental was in the San Francisco area which is known for car break-ins, so we hardly put anything in the vehicle and had nothing visible --- it was completely cleaned of belongings upon return. There was what I consider a normal amount of debris from 5 pairs of shoes going in and out of the vehicle for 11 days, certainly not more than a 5-minute vacuum could take care of. We've vacuumed rentals in the past when we felt they were excessively dirty, but this was not.

I've appealed to Avis through multiple channels and have gotten nowhere, each time with them citing photos of the vehicle that do not show it was excessively dirty. At one point they told me that it's my job to clean the car before returning it. Their terms do not require cleaning, but say you'll pay a "reasonable fee" for cleaning if they determine it's excessively dirty, which was not the case with this rental. I can't trust Avis anymore because I can't roll the dice on whether my next rental will cost $450 extra, and I won't do their job for them to make the car spotless for the next customer after I've paid a full rental fee.

Here is the experience during my recent car rental experience with AVIS. I booked my car rental with AVIS (picking up on APR 6, 2024 at Memphis International Airport, TN and returning in Downtown Nashville, TN on APR 9, 2024). Since my flight was arriving late at night, I chose AVIS because its desk is open until 1:30 AM. In order to secure a rental, I paid in advance.

I arrived at the AVIS desk at Memphis International around 11:00 PM, APR 6, 2024. AVIS rep told me that they were overbooked and no car was available. He suggested taking UBER or LIFT for further transportation. He did not provide any explanation why prepaid, i.e. already purchased product/service was given away to someone else. Instead for further questions he gave an AVIS booklet with several 1800 numbers. He also suggested to come back in the morning to check if rental car would be available.

We waited for 40 minutes for the Lift driver and rode 30 miles to my final destination, Cordova, TN. Upon arrival I called the AVIS customer care desk (1800 number) and was told to call back in the morning (8 AM). Representative also suggested filing a complaint online, which I did. I received a couple of standard email messages with suggestions to call back to Customer Service at 1-800 number.

I called in the morning (8:15 AM) again and talked to rep who explained to me that according to inventory 6 cars are available at Memphis International but I must to arrive in person to confirm that. He was not able to contact AVIS at Memphis International since they did not pick up the telephone. I can confirm that. Tried to do it by myself with similar results. As an alternative to avoid coming back to Memphis International, Rick checked out local AVIS inventory in Cordova, TN location. However, this approach was not feasible because this location does not provide one-way rental. Rick could not explain why. He transferred me to another rep named Alex.

Alex told me that he is from the billing department and could not help me with rental, but will provide me with compensation for inconvenience. He said that it will come in the form of an email message with explanations in an hour. He verified my email address and telephone number. Never received such an email message from AVIS. He also refused to transfer me back to customer care. Instead of that he provided a couple 1-800 numbers (1-866-806-3637 and 1-866-5257521). Neither of them worked. This representative was not polite and cooperative at all.

I called back and talked to Tamara who did not provide any assistance at all and transferred me to supervisor per my request. He was very polite and cooperative. He confirmed that to receive one way rental I had to go back to Memphis International. In order to address the issue he suggested transferring me to another group at AVIS. He also offered me to be present at the conference call with them and assist. Never happened. I was transferred to the rep, who told me that no cars were available to me in the entire Memphis metro area. Per my request she transferred me to the supervisor. This person was pretty rude and uncooperative. She confirmed that no cars were available in the inventory and I had two options: go back to Memphis International AVIS location (30 miles from me) and check availability or to receive a full refund and get a car rental somewhere else.

As a "courtesy", she tried to contact the Memphis International AVIS location with no response. I was also provided with reference number. The message was pretty clear: No cars are available for you at AVIS and it is your problem with your further transportation. Per my request to talk with her supervisor I was told that she was supervisor on duty and the highest level of AVIS authority at that time.

After spending almost two and half hours on the telephone with AVIS representatives I decided to go back to Memphis International on my own. I arrived there around 11:00 AM on APR 7, 2024. Just for clarification, I did not use the rental car which I had paid for almost a day and it was not my fault. Noone offered me any compensation. Instead of that I was suggested to take care of my transportation by myself and on my own expenses. Upon arrival I was given a car pretty quickly. Representative at the desk assured me that the car had CarPlay option capabilities for using GPS from my phone. It was very important for safe driving in unknown geographical area.

The booklet indicated the car was parked in space number: D16. It was Hyundai Tucson and had all the capabilities needed. The Exit representative informed me that it was the wrong car and I must drive around the airport to return it. When I arrived, the Toyota Corolla was parked in the D16 car space. This car did not have any CarPlay capabilities which I was promised. With this car I found right after I left the car rental garage that fuel was extremely low and the tank was almost empty. I had to go back and ask for the other car. I was told that I probably have to wait. The third car (Chevrolet Malibu) provided in 15 minutes worked ok. No apologies were provided. I spent two hours at Memphis International AVIS facility. I was happy to leave as soon as possible.

Two days later (AP 9, 2024) at AVIS Nashville downtown drop off went pretty smoothly. However, to my question why the prepaid amount increased for 22 dollars more, the representative did not provide any answer. I was also not offered any courtesy lift to my hotel. Even though it was only a mile away from AVIS. I was under the impression such courtesy is an industry standard for major car rental companies provided in big metro areas. Later on I was contacted by two AVIS representatives. I responded to both with request for investigation. No response was received back.

According to my rental car experience with AVIS, this organization's operations do not work properly, have many gaps, and deficiencies in customer care. Representatives do not care about customer's needs, provided a lot of misdirections and controversial information. The appropriate communication between the central customer care group and AVIS locations are almost absent. AVIS employees I dealt with did not express any empathy to me as a client and did not provide enough efforts to resolve issues I experienced. I spent almost a day trying to get the car which I already paid for, without any compensation. The compensation for my additional transportation costs was not addressed either. Nobody really apologized to me.

Rented a vehicle for our vacation through the Costco/Avis in March 2024. Promised a Rav4, at a reasonable rate ($481) for 9 days out of Tampa. At the counter we had to wait almost 2 hours to get up to the counter. I was charged 700ish at the counter of which I was told 200 was our deposit that we would get back after it was returned in good condition. They stuck us in a Ford Flex, not at all the Rav4 that was promised despite there being other Rav4's in the parking garage. Lo and behold after the trip was over looking at my credit card charges to see no refund of the 200 that the counterperson said I would receive. Called Avis to inquire, they told me that because I was "late" to the counter, which was their fault due to lines/inadequate staffing, I HAD to be upgraded and that I assumed the upcharge in vehicle because I was late to my reservation. In all my car rental history, I have never had this happen. Will never rent from Avis again.

Vehicle Rental Experience: A Cautionary Tale

Preamble: A loyal customer with over 1000 rentals and a top-tier membership status, I expected to redeem my 36,000 points for a simple one-way truck rental from Las Vegas to Raleigh.

Objective: Leverage loyalty points for a cost-effective, one-way rental.

Experience: The company’s app malfunctioned, and in-person assistance led to hours of wasted time, conflicting information, and a refusal to honor my points. Customer service (telephone) was a carousel of incompetence, with representatives providing false information, refused to speak with supervisors, and calls ending in hang-ups.

Conclusion: Avis’s disregard for customer loyalty and absence of a complaint department is unacceptable. The final insult was an erroneous charge of $1400 for a service quoted at $850 that was never correctly provided. Avis’s failure to rectify their mistake or offer a genuine resolution is indicative of a systemic issue within their customer service operations.

Final Verdict: Avoid Avis at all costs. Their outsourced customer service lacks empowerment and accountability, leading to a frustrating and fruitless experience. In my case it was a downright illegal theft venture by a well-known company. Test what I say is true, call yourself and ask to speak with a complaint department, not customer service as customer service will not help you if you find yourself in a situation like mine.

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice and support regarding a problem AVIS car rental company. Here’s what happened: I rented a car from AVIS for a trip with my family and friends. When we returned the vehicle, we were assured that everything was fine, and there were no issues whatsoever. But, here’s the kicker – I got hit with a surprise charge claiming there was a smoke smell in the car. The thing is, none of us smoke. We’re all non-smokers, and I can swear there was no smoking during our rental period.

I’ve already reached out to AVIS to dispute the charge and ask for a refund, including the exchange fee, which adds up to $450 + 7 Euros. I’ve asked them to thoroughly investigate and provide evidence if they’re sticking to their claim. I’m pretty frustrated and worried about this unfair charge, and I could really use some advice on how to handle it. Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation with AVIS or any other rental company? Any tips on how to sort this mess out would be a huge help. Thanks a bunch for your support.

If you're renting a car in Costa Rica, be aware that in addition to the cost of the car rental plus all the taxes, quoted by Avis, and with no warning at all, they charged an additional US$15.99/day for liability insurance, which we could not decline. Buy their liability insurance or no car. Plus extra this and that. So the $214.45 car rental cost $411.33 with no advance notice whatsoever. I complained to Avis, saying they should provide the actual cost in advance, and all I got was an automatic reply saying I had signed the rental agreement so had no basis to complain. I wasn't asking for a refund or anything, just informing them of what happened, which clearly no real person actually read.

Their customer service and misleading representations at the counters have just become horrible. I just had another terrible experience with them on a trip to Costa Rica. I seldom leave reviews and let people develop their own opinions because we all have different standards. However, strongly consider the entirety of the reviews on Avis. Look elsewhere for your car rental even if it cost a little more because if you have an issue with an Avis rental, it’s going to cost you a lot lot more in the end.

If I had got to the counter first, I'd only be 45 minutes late. Avis charged me a 1 day extra rate charge. I rented a vehicle from Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR), 44th Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI and was given a Malibu with 82,000 miles, pulled to the left, made concerning engine noises at speed and unbalanced tires that vibrated. Of course you don't find all these things out till you get onto the highway however, the 82,000 miles was a red flag I should have acknowledged. The fact Avis even has a car with this many miles and in this condition is hard to believe. I reported this to the GRR Avis employee and they offered no solution or seemed to care (didn't get recorded anywhere that I complained). When I tried to reconcile this dangerous experience with customer service post rental, I was told I should have reported it (I did but no one cared) and that there was nothing they could do at this point because there was no way to verify this, which is convenient.

There is also no way to report this on the app or website during a rental, also convenient. For customers and inevitably the person this car breaks on or causes a crash to, the plate number is **. When they say no one has complained previously, I hope you or your attorney find this review. It's sad that companies do not value safety or customer experience and would just assume insinuate a customer is lying, and lose a customer (in this case a whole company) over such a small easily fixable issue. I tried to call customer service and got someone in another country I could barely understand that just repeated lines off a sheet. With that being said, domestic CSR was no more caring or helpful. I was also charged for a whole extra day after arriving late by an hour in icy conditions but CSR has made it clear there is no exceptions to this. Would recommend you book for a day extra and bring it back early due to this.

It seems I am not the only person to receive this level of service from this location or Avis CSR / Corporate which is sad. Eventually these will all add up to be a considerable chunk of business but the damage will be done. I tried to speak with every rep I could about this from calling, to Facebook, to WhatsApp links given by other customers (scam?). The end result was all the same. Sorry YOU didn't handle this but AVIS won't help because it was reported... I think things are not reported and made difficult to report on purpose maybe?

I would NEVER rent from Avis again and certainly NEVER from this location!

Even after vacation, I continue to have to deal with this company to resolve issues with additional charges charged to my credit card (Which needed to refunded after two separate phone calls and an hour+ on the phone!) and tolls charged to my credit card that wasn’t me. PLEASE check all your rental paperwork to be sure it’s correct! Take pictures of the rental car and the dashboard with mileage. They mixed up the type of vehicle that I had with someone else’s rental and tried billing me for it! Now I need to call a different number to dispute the toll charges. Not true, Killeen Avis said there was a charging station in Temple, but didn't know where. And they did not answer the phone when I called back asking if they can find a charging location. IF THIS INFORMATION IS NOT AVAILABLE, DO NOT RENT OUT THE VEHICLE!! I was left calling around EVERYWHERE looking for about 2 hours looking for a charging station. Avis has changed a great deal since I became a preferred customer. Preferred no longer means anything and in truth rental contracts really don’t mean much to them either. If you’re traveling through Denver international airport avoid Avis at all costs. The Denver office is extremely disorganized. The Avis branch offices in Denver are incapable of communicating with each other or with customer service. Avis customer service, of course, is incapable of providing any solutions to problems with rentals. My experience: I arrived in Denver at 4:30 PM on February 17, 2024, I pre-paid a rental of an intermediate SUV. I waited over an hour for the shuttle bus along with about 50 other people I got off at the Avis preferred counter as I was told and found my name on the board, but there was no parking space indicated for my car. There were at least 100 people in the preferred line. The temperature outside was about 20°F. I waited for two hours.

In front of me in line, were a gentleman from Washington state and his two children who were freezing in their airport clothes. When I finally got to the counter, I was told to go to a parking space. I went to the parking space and it turned out to be an electric vehicle. I was so glad just to get out of the airport. I drove 7 miles towards the interstate highway and the car notified me that I had less than a 7% charge. I was able to locate a charging station and approximately three hours later I had a 10% charge and was able to make it to my destination around 11 PM. Numerous calls to Avis during that time achieved nothing in terms of assistance, useful advice or commiseration. I don’t know why anyone would ever treat a customer this way.

Subsequent calls to Avis offices in Denver resulted in additional frustration, none of the offices were able to switch out my car to the actual car I contracted for and the only solution offered me was that I should drive back 40 miles to the airport and switch the car out. This did not sound appealing to me to go out back out to the airport and wait another two hours in their “preferred customer” line. Reading other reviews here, I wonder how Avis stays in business.

I wouldn't have booked with them had I known that and I have never experienced that with any other rental company. SO BEWARE OF AVIS, they'll just charge your card for whatever amount they feel like despite anything they may have quoted you.

I made my reservation online four days ago. At 3:00 p.m. today, I went to Avis on Main Street in downtown Kansas City to pick up the vehicle. Victor and his significant other asked for my credit card and driver's license. Immediately, they told me, "We don't accept that credit card." I told him I had reserved the car with it online and was charged. So, I suggested my debit card. Victor asked me for my credit score, and I told him 724, and Victor said, "You should be approved." Then he did a credit check, and Equifax did not approve me. He said, "It must be debt to income ratio." Then, Victor asked me for a voucher code when I reserved the car online. I told him I did not receive a voucher code but only a reservation number.

So, Victor told me he could not rent to me or use another major credit card for the car, plus $250.00. Then, he told me I had done something wrong when I made the reservation online on October 16th. So, I called AVIS when I got home, and Andrea told me I did not need a voucher code but just the reservation. So I suggested that she call Victor at the Main Street location while on the phone to confirm that I did not need a voucher code, just the reservation, but she refused to call him. So, I requested a refund and cancellation. Andrea told me she could cancel my reservation but not issue a refund because she could not see the charge.

So, based on how Victor, Andrea, and AVIS handled me, I will no longer rent from AVIS because they're insensitive and use biased-base tactics. Victor told me that if I had a billion dollars in the bank, they still wouldn't rent me because I did not pass the credit check. And he's been doing this for 43 years while mingling with his girlfriend at work, and he knew I rented from them before. Moreover, I asked to speak to Andrea's supervisor, and she put me on hold for a very long time. AVIS is unprofessional, inconsiderate, and policing with biased-based tactics. I can't attend Oklahoma to see my daughter perform for her homecoming.

Two months ago a rented a car from Avis online. I prepaid for the several weeks of usage while booking the reservation directly through them. Upon arrival for my pick up I was notified that I needed to provide a form of payment in person for a deposit and incidentals as the form of payment used online somehow could not be used. I did not have the same form of payment handy on my person so I just used my debit card to complete the rental process and picked up my car. A day later I noticed an $1100 charge on my debit card from Avis and promptly called them to report the error. They notified me that this was just the deposit and it would be refunded once I returned the vehicle.

Having found nothing on their contract that matched this 100% of rental value as a deposit I still elected to wait for the refund once I returned the vehicle based on their direction. After returning the car, the money was not returned (shocker). I called Avis and let them know that they charged me twice for the same rental and that I needed to be refunded for their error. This led to a cycle of 5-10 day refund promises that have stretched this lack of correction to two months from its start. Now the confirmation of the proper refund has turned from a admission of the error and processing of the banking return to a processing of my claim that will take me 10-14 business days just for an internal panel to review dispute several drinks of my refund to date.

How they think they are able to decide whether or not to return the money they wrongfully took from me or not is beyond me... So here we are, in a situation I can’t think of any other way to describe as THEFT of funds with them playing a game of chicken, taunting me to take legal action to rectify the situation. STAY AWAY FROM THESE CRIMINALS.

I wanted to bring it to your attention that the corporate Avis rate and preferred membership get charged more money than if you book as a guest. I frequently rent a car for my job. In the last three rentals, I compared rates, and our corporate rate/preferred rate is, on average, $100 more than that of a guest booking for a five-day rental. I have contacted Avis regarding this because it didn't make much sense to me. However, they didn’t provide a satisfactory answer. They’re a scummy company that should go bankrupt.

My wife and I rented a car at the Atlanta airport to drive back to Tennessee. We were at the counter before 9 AM and were given a Ford Edge for our vehicle. When we went out to the pick-up area, the car we were supposed to be in was being given to someone else. We were instead given a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which of course didn't match the paperwork we had so our first problem was at the gate trying to get out of the airport. We finally got on the freeway headed home when the transmission on the car failed and would not go out of first gear.

We managed to get off the freeway to a gas station parking lot and called Avis roadside service. We waited for 6 1/2 hours for a tow truck, making multiple calls to roadside service to try to facilitate. We were told if we left the car unattended before the tow truck arrived we'd be liable for any theft or damage to the car. We have never felt so completely helpless in a situation, there was literally nothing we could do. Last time we ever go to Avis.

Avoid using Avis for your rental company. We rented a 12 passenger van months before our family trip. A trip that was to be spent relaxing and non-stress as a family. Before my husbands bone marrow transplant. Day before, July 12, 2023, we were to pick up van we got a phone call from the jet port site in Portland Maine. Girl stated she was confirming we were still picking up van the following day because they had too many rentals for a van and not enough vans. I stated, "Of course why wouldn't I, it's been booked." She then stated some people will not get a van but 2 SUVs. I stated it was not acceptable. We rented a van to be together for a reason on this trip, my husband is ill. We are traveling to Tenn. and want to be all together that is why a van is rented.

She kept telling me we will see what we can do. She is just calling to confirm. I asked to talk to a manager he finally came on with an attitude. Said he heard her whole conversation she never said anything about SUVs. Liar! So the following day my husband went to get van. Awful experience my husband said. Woman at counter had a major attitude problem. Yeah we had a van, a junk. Smelled bad. Tires were all extremely low in air, and the steering pulled badly to the right. Had to hold steering wheel with 2 hands tightly while driving. They definitely did not check van out before renting it. My husband after arriving home figured we would try to find another Avis site with a van on trip to switch. No luck no one had any. We did a 2-week trip with an unsafe van!

On July 15, 2023, when I visited the Avis Center to pick up my rental car, I was directed to a parking space to get the vehicle. However, upon reaching the assigned parking area, my car was NOT THERE. I reached out for the assistance from a staff member who initially offered me a truck, which I declined. They then asked me to wait in the scorching 115-degree heat. After a considerable wait, they finally brought a small car for me. Due to the extreme heat, I did a quick check and ended up driving the car, noticing an unusual smell but not identifying it clearly.

Upon returning the car later, no staff was present, so I left the key behind. It's important to emphasize that neither I nor my two children smoke. The vehicle is exclusively used by three of us, and we are non-smokers. I was perplexed to receive a letter stating that there was a lingering cigarette smell in the car. Suspicious, I researched online and found cases where this could be a scam. When I contacted them, they offered a $200 discount but had already charged $450 for alleged smoking in the car. I suspect this could be an attempt to take advantage of the situation and make additional money. I've made several attempts to dispute this with them, but they haven't addressed my concerns or investigated the matter fairly. I intend to share this experience online, hoping it will assist others who might face a similar unwarranted charge.

They charge $250 to $450 for anything from two soda cans left in a vehicle (“excessive garbage”) to dried mud on driver’s mat after camping in an SUV. Both “required” detailing. No photo documentation or detailing invoice. They insist that their TOC as quoted by CSR basically says cars must be returned perfectly even though they only clearly reference a $450 charge for smoking.

I learned all of this after three calls. Several hours on hold. The “escalated CSR” saying I needed to escalate further and I said I would wait (knowing she could not hang up if I was on line). She then finally admitted she was the final stop. It took over an hour, but she removed the charge. I wore her down. Man, it was not worth 5+ hours of time to get back $250, but I learned a lot about Avis. I am giving up my preferred status and points and will never rent from them again. My experience is and was very poor. I rented a vehicle with Avis on July 12, 2023. The first vehicle I picked up reeked of cigarette smoke, so I requested a different car to which they did accommodate. While in this vehicle, I was driving on the freeway and a large truck kicked up a rock and chipped the windshield. Didn't think too much of it, figured they would be able to get it repaired and send me the bill. Well they did and they couldn't just repair, they had to replace the entire windshield which came to a grand total of $1,156.53.

As soon as I received their correspondence I reached out immediately to get this matter resolved. When I initially called in the gentleman I spoke with assured me that my claim could be resolved by my insurance company Liberty Mutual, and if I didn't want to go through them he could reduce the amount owed by 20% (Seems Scammy but ok). I opted to have my insurance company resolve it and filed my claim. The claim was approved almost immediately within 48 hours, to which Liberty sent an email to request how they would like to proceed with accepting payment. AVIS did not respond to their email, so I emailed AVIS directly 2 times, to which I did not receive any response.

Fast forward to today, and come to find out my credit card was charged the entire amount, and they are unwilling to refund, reverse, or help me in the customer service department. The claims department they've forwarded to me is stating over an hour wait to speak with someone, and if I would like to speak with the supervisors, supervisor, it will take 24 to 48 hours. Avis has the most idiotic car pick up system at John Wayne airport. First, Avis is not even listed as a rental car company. When you come out of baggage claim, Hertz and others are one-way and Budget another day another way. So after you have put in Avis into your map app and figured out where to go (down the elevator to the garage and walk past just about every other rental agency), you get to an Avis office where you stand in line (it was 20 minutes for us at 1:00 pm on a Wednesday). There, you get your paper (yes, paper) reservation, but no car key. Then you walk to another place in the garage and you stand in a long line and wait (it was over half an hour for us) until you’re able to present the paper you just got from the other place to the person who will give you your key.

Even if you have made a reservation online, if you get in that second line first you will be sent back to the first place to get your paperwork. It is so stupid because the only thing you get at the end of the second line is a person who hands you your key after looking at the paperwork. There is no reason they couldn’t give you a key after standing in the first line. I saw several people after standing in line for a half an hour be sent back to stand in line to get their paperwork, only to have to stand in the 30 minute line for a second time.

I prepaid for a rental car with Avis using PayPal. Avis told me they cannot accept paypal as a payment method because there is no card number to check the last 4 digits on. So the day of vacation avis charged me the full rental amount, plus deposit. After I had already paid in full and should have had a $300 hold on my credit card. So now I have an authorization and have already paid a total of $1,049. This is day 1 of my vacation. I ask for my money back from avis and paypal. Neither company will look at it or try to resolve anything in anyway. I am quite upset at this point. But hey everyone going on vacation with a family of 4 has multiple extra thousands of dollars available to go with right? I end the vacation 1 day early. Lose the money paid for prepayment on the day's activities. $260 gone. Come back home and return the car 1 day early. So a total of 6 days.

I call avis and they are barely willing to refund me for the day I returned the car early. Only after arguing with the phone representative for 20 minutes. Now 4 hours on the phone with paypal the supervisor named Ron finally looks at the request. He told me for 5 minutes or more that it was not possible to close out the case today. I argued and kept asking him to look at the information from 7 days ago. Finally they agree that I should get my money back and they will send it in 3-5 days

So to be very clear. Paypal advertised Avis as being a business partner that provides “deals” with. You can prepay with Paypal. Once you go to pick up the car Avis says “I need the last 4 digits of the card used to make this reservation”. You say Paypal is a digital wallet that doesn't provide the last 4 digits of a card as it's not a credit or credit card.

Avis says: we don't accept prepaid reservations without it. Then they charge you the full amount, plus the incidentals fee on a credit card and pretend your prepaid reservation doesn't exist. Avis should have immediately refunded this. And went further to help offset some of the damage they and Paypal caused in my personal life.

The car that I was given had two completely bald front tires and the safety alert system didn't work for the left side. After spending 2.5 hours on the phone - being transferred to a total of eight people (because I kept getting told that helping me with a car exchange was not something that they could do - even though the last person who just transferred me to the next person said "I will transfer to the person who can help you"). I had to drive that unsafe vehicle to the return point thirty-five minutes away. I was told a new vehicle was waiting there for me. When I got there I was told that location was never contacted and they didn't have a car for me. Maryanne did work something out (Kudos to her!). She gave us a car that was going to be picked up for transfer to somewhere else.

This new car was an upgrade, but was absolutely filthy inside... Ripped carpet, noticeably stained seats (black), shoe prints on the back of the front seats, a smoky film on all of the inside windows, pieces of the interior were detached and there was animal hair everywhere. And the wiper blade on the driver side was detached and shredded. Nonfunctional. Thank goodness California is dry this time of year. The car was returned cleaner than when it was picked up. I was on a short vacation. I spent three hours total time on the phone with Avis. My plans for the first night were cancelled because the first car was not safe to drive. The next day more than half a day was wasted on phone calls and car return/pickup.

I asked for compensation. I was told I could have a $50 off coupon good for my next rental. My plans had to be rearranged, I lost out on planned activities, I spent all those hours going in exasperating circles and I'm offered a coupon. I said no. She offered me $50 refund. That doesn't even cover the time I spent going in circles on the phone. Oh, and when I returned the vehicle I was once again handed off to "someone else" (x2) to get the refund. The last person said his manager would call me. Four days later and I still have not heard from the manager.

Once I arrived to pick up the car I was informed that they wouldn't accept my debit or my husband's credit card as he wasn't present. I was left stranded in Memphis TN with no way back to SC. Thankfully a wonderful private car service accepted my fare last minute and only charged me 600.00 to get me to Birmingham where my husband could pick me up. I will never book Avis again and as a travel agent I will never book my clients through Avis.

I booked and prepaid a rental for July 20 - July 23, to be picked up at PA airport when the flight arrived at 11:55. My plane was delayed a few minutes. I came to the kiosk to pick up the car at around 12: 40. The kiosk was closed; I was unable to pick up the vehicle. I need not tell you how dangerous it is for a woman to be alone in a parking garage at an airport in the middle of the night. I ended up Ubering to the hotel at 2:00 AM, after spending about 30 minutes on the phone with AVIS personnel, only to find out they could not help. (I think they teach this phrase in their training.)

Furthering the trouble, I had to pay to take an Uber back to the airport this morning to pick up the car. I asked if it would be possible to have the charge for July 20 removed since I was unable to pick up the car as promised. They told me they were sorry but couldn't help me out. I asked if I could get an upgrade on the car rather than a refund & was told, "No, we can not help you with that."

In addition, when I picked up the car this morning, it was FILTHY on the inside. There are used styrofoam cups, trash, fresh coffee stains on the console, and a baby toy. I asked if I could get a CLEAN car and was told, "I am sorry, we can't help you." At this time, the attendant became rude. I was on a time crunch to get to work, so I took the dirty car. This has been the worst car rental experience we have had, EVER. Now, after 4 hours of sleep and a day of work, I get to clean someone else's mess so I can use the car this weekend and not be assaulted by other people's filth. This is terrible customer service; it's unreliable, especially concerning safety. I called customer service this afternoon and a lady created a case number & sent the information over to another department. I was told I needed to call back when I returned the car to let them know it was returned and maybe we could get refunded for the first day. MORE HASSLE

Updating my previous review…I had a trip preplanned and had already paid $475. On June 27th I got to the rental center at the Seattle airport I was offered a free upgrade. I also asked to add a driver with a different last name ($65) and asked for the toll road upgrade ($55) so I was fully expecting to pay extra for those two items. Before the end of all this I realized that in reserving my car I accidentally said I would be picking it up at 9pm but meant to pick it up at 9am so I see where one more day should be charged to me. I agreed to the $115 they wanted to charge me for that. My math (old school) says I owed $235 above my original $475. Giving me a total of $710 for my rental. In the hurry to get to the airport the following Saturday it wasn’t until I got to the gate I had a chance to look at the email receipt I was sent by Avis. They were charging me an additional $699.

When I got home I called Avis who would not listen to the fact that I had already prepaid $475. She then Said “the best I can do is give you a $250 refund" to which after waiting three week for something that was supposed to only take 7-10 days I went to pay my credit card. $710 on top of the already paid $475. I gave them a chance to make it right before I told the whole story of their two empty promises. There never was a “free” upgrade and the & 250 credit never came either. I’ll never use Avis again.

Oh, what a delightful three years it has been, being an esteemed patron of Avis! Their exceptional service has left me utterly speechless, and by that, I mean I'll never be renting with them again – EVER. It all started with the genius at the DTW airport (pickup) Avis rental, who generously provided me with their version of the truth about gas refill charges. But wait, there's more! At the drop-off airport, they must have thought it'd be a real treat to charge me for rental insurance, despite my clear and concise decision to opt-out. Bravo, Avis, bravo! And I can't forget to give a standing ovation to the Avis manager at the Westchester Country Airport (drop-off) for his enthusiastic performance in arguing with me for over 1.5 hours. Such dedication to customer satisfaction is truly inspiring!

Just when I thought the show was over, they surprised me with a grand finale – charging a generous $309 to my credit card without my consent, while I was disputing the settlement amount over call with a service agent. Of course, I called their esteemed customer care service again, who assured me that the $309 would eventually find its way back to me. They even gave me a fancy Case ID:**. I am still waiting for it like an owner looking for its lost puppy.

Oh, how I cherish the memories of this wonderful escapade! Not only did Avis take my money, but they also graciously took away a couple of hours of quality family time during my trip back to Detroit from New York. Truly, they have a knack for making every moment count! So, dear friends, if you ever feel the urge to rent with Avis, be sure to turn on recording devices while you talk to them. And don't you dare miss out on the Gas Service Option, for it's the cherry on top of this unforgettable Avis experience!

As a follow-up to my previous negative review of Avis Car Rental written on 7/14 for an incident that occurred on 7/4, I am pleased to report that the customer service department at Avis Rental responded to my complaint in detail today and adequately addressed my concerns.

    Original Review: July 14, 2023

I had a disappointing and an unpleasant experience with Avis Car Rental recently. I picked up my rental from the Las Vegas Airport location on 4-July-2023. However the car that was assigned to me did not have engine oil and had the oil change warning light on. I had to return to the rental counter to report this and was assigned another vehicle but the same issue occurred again for 2 more vehicles consecutively. After the third attempt, I asked the agent at the counter to check for himself and ensure that the vehicle was in good condition but he was rude and declined and said that it was not his job to check and that I would have to get the fourth vehicle and check for myself if it had sufficient engine oil. The agent lacked customer service and made my experience horrible.

I asked to speak with a manager and he said that he was the supervisor there and that there was nothing else I could do other than getting another vehicle without any guarantee that it would be in desirable condition. On the fourth try and after wasting almost an hour at the location I finally got a vehicle that was in satisfactory condition but at the expense of a disappointing experience and waste of time. I believe Avis Rental car does not keep or inspect their vehicles properly, do not have good customer service and lack management at their pickup location.

So, I got on the Avis website and started a chat with Avis. My first operator conveniently disappeared when I mentioned my base rate being raised. The second operator guided me to their 1-800 line. Now, when I call there I am told that I have reached the Budget line and was asked to call Avis. I am pretty sure they are all the same company, and they just want to give you the run around and take more money. Needless to say, I put the same dates in Expedia and found a car for 1/3 the cost. Literally the exact same car. Canceled Avis, for life. No more business with them. They are in the doldrums with the other crap companies like Frontier and Spectrum. Stay away!

Good morning. I am writing about my experience with Avis/Budget. I rented a Suv from your establishment on 315 Garrisonville Rd, Stafford Va 22554 on Saturday June 30th at 1 pm but I arrived at the store at noon, I initially went there to add a driver only. (My son-in-law Michael **) because the reservation was scheduled for DCA but my son in law Michael ** need to pick up his daughter from dance and would not be able to make it to DCA in time, but the agent at the Stafford location informed me that my son-in-law & I could have rented from the Stafford location instead of DCA and the rate would be the same, so we decide to rent from the Stafford location.

We were that last customer in the store and once we did the transaction, the rep locked the door. My son-in-law and I went out the door and headed to the car, we rented a White Toyota Highlander. We get to the car to get in and I go to start the car and it wouldn't start. We go back up to the front of Avis store and the reps were gone. I call customer service who informs me to call roadside assistance. I call roadside assistance and inform them that I rented a SUV from the above location at 315 Garrisonville Rd, Stafford Va 22554 and the SUV didnt start, the rep informed me that he would look for the nearest Avis to pick up another car. I said ok and the rep mentioned Dulles (IAD) airport, Informed the rep that Dulles was over an hour away.

They informed me that an Uber would be sent to pick me up and that I would get a text of that and the information to pick up car, that I didn't need to stand in line just to go to the exchange lane. The Uber arrived and took me to Dulle airport, I arrive at the airport and go directly to the exchange line, there are 2 people in front of me a ** gentlemen and 2 men of maybe middle eastern descent, they both were help by the rep who looked to be of maybe middle eastern descent. Once the rep helped both of them, we went over and help the regular customers in line, I wanted over 30 mins to see if he would come back or anyone would acknowledge I was there and no one ever did.

I watched the regular line clear out 2 times and then I call your customer service on the phone and explain to them that I was told to come to the airport and go directly to exchange line that I did not have to wait and that the customer service rep helped 2 other people in line that was in front of me but never acknowledge me, the rep on the phone stated that this was not supposed to happen and told me to go directly to the front of line. I informed the rep that I would just go to the regular line because it seemed to have cleared out 2 times and I was still waiting. Once I got to the front of line with the rep, I explained to the rep that I rented a car from 315 Garrisonville rd in Stafford Va, the car never started so Avis roadside assistance Ubered me to the Dulles location and told me to show them the text I had to pick up a new car and that I had the keys.

The rep called the manager who was a short Hispanic woman with black hair who could have been in early thirties, she was not wearing a name tag, and neither were a few reps that were working. She explained to the manager what was going on and the manager with an attitude stated "She (me) has the keys and I don't know where that car is so I can not release a car." I told her that the car was still on the Avis parking lot because it never started. The manager stated that I needed to call roadside assistance take the keys back to them and roadside assistance would need to verify they had car with a text for me to show the Dulles location. I told manager that I was Ubered over an hour to the Dulles location, why can't I just call roadside assistance and have them verify and she told me, "No I needed to take the keys back."

I called roadside assistance and explain to them that I was told by the manager that I needed to go back to the Stafford location and take the keys back, I had already been Ubered an hour to the Dulles location and that I needed to be on the road, the rep stated that they were sorry and stated that they would set up another uber to take me back and once I go there, they would have to get me an uber back.

I also explained to each rep the whole story on what happened. So the rep ordered me an Uber and the first one ordered show that they cancelled the trip, the next one called and stated she was at gate and couldn't get in. I directed her to where to go and eventually, she cancelled, I also spoke with another uber who cancelled trip, so I called roadside assistance back and they ordered another Uber. In the meantime informed the rep that I hope that the location had the car once I came back and he had me go back in to ask the manager and the manager told me when I return to go to exchange line, I informed the manager that I waited in that line over 30 mins and no one helped me.

The manager told me to go to the preferred customer's line when I returned. In the meantime, the tow truck driver called me and asked was I at the car and I told him no because total of 3 Ubers were ordered and 2 cancelled, I said probably because it started to storm. I told the tow driver that I was told that I had to return the keys to him then he would have verify the car was picked up, and so the driver verified which car it was while I was on the phone and put the Suv on the truck and asked me why couldn't I stay there and he just verify he had the car and then I could pick up rental, I told the tow truck driver that the manager stated I needed to take the key back to him. He informed me I could have mailed the key back.

I also told the tow driver that I was already on the way and the Uber driver needed to complete his pick-up. I then hung up with the tow driver and call roadside assistance and inform the rep what was going on and that I would need to schedule an Uber back, the rep informed me that if I had already had an Uber that per contract this was my one complimentary ride and that I need to pay for the one back.

I told rep I would not pay, it was not my fault that I was sent to pick up car and wasn't told to leave key in car or anything. The rep stated that I needed to stay with the car until roadside assistance came to pick up car. I told the rep roadside assistance never scheduled a to pick up car because the car was still on Avis lot and the rep stated the protocol was for you to wait for roadside assistance to come pick up car before I ubered to airport. I informed the rep I don't know what the protocol is for Avis. I don't work for Avis so I don't know what your protocol is and I asked to speak to a manager, the rep stated that the manager would tell me the same thing.

I spoke to the manager and the manager told me I needed to pay for an Uber also and that I needed to wait for roadside assistance to had picked up Suv first before going to get the other car that was the protocol. I told the rep like I told all the other reps, there was no tow scheduled. I was just sent to the airport with my text to pick up car and didn't have to wait to go to exchange line and at this point that I was frustrated and if I wouldn't pay for another Uber or a car that I could not get to, the manager on phone stated that the Uber would have to be charged to car and I would have to dispute this with customer service, also the tow truck driver was on the phone as I spoke with the manager, I told her I would call customer service.

I called customer service which was reservations. The rep stated that they he couldn't do anything on his end because he was in reservations but I could go online and contact customer service with complaint and that once it goes to roadside assistance that changes the claim number. I told him ok, called back to roadside assistance and spoke with another rep, a young lady and explained her the same issue as the current reps and she stated the same thing that I should have waited for roadside assistance and I told her roadside assistance was never scheduled because the car was still on lot.

I told rep I keep hearing the reps stating they should have, but they didn't so it was not fault and they are telling me I need to pay for another Uber and I was not paying for another Uber. I let her know that I had been dealing with this since noon and here it was like 9 pm and it was getting dark and I sitting in front of the Avis store in Stafford Va, with one way back to pick up car. The rep then took my information and said she was sending an Uber, and I asked did I have to pay for it and she stated no.

The Uber comes, I arrive back at Dulles airport and went to the preferred customer line the rep name Michael asked was I a preferred customer and I said no, I was here earlier and no one helped me in that line after standing there over 30 mins and the manager told me to come to this line, and he was kind of rude stating he didn't need to hear all that and asked my other information.

I told him that I was frustrated and had been dealing with this all day and he didn't want to hear that. I asked what the manager name the little hispanic lady show with black hair that was there earlier, he wouldn't give me her name and called up someone on phone then I showed him my text. He states that anyone looking at this number it show the car is here so they would have had to do research. This was not true because if that was the case I wouldn't of had to go back to the other lot, he gets my information and give me the information on where to pick up car and the rep Michael state that he just helped me.

I was also told by the manager on phone that the manager at Dulles gave me incorrect information. To sum this up this was the worst experience ever, it took me 10hrs to get a rental car, Avis because the lack of customer and rudeness caused me to miss an important event, I got home at 1 am. I expressed to first rep on the phone that ordered Uber back to car to meet tow truck driver. I sure hope that Avis compensates me dearly because of the stress.

SUMMARY: DON'T USE AVIS, EVER. DON'T PREPAY EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'LL SAVE MONEY. JUST AVOID AVIS ENTIRELY. Worst experience ever. We prepaid $481 on my wife's card. When we went to pick up our car it was filthy and had dings in various places. I literally got greasy gunk on my hand when I opened the trunk. The check engine light was on. We asked for another car and the lady on duty said there wasn't another available. She wrote us a little sticky note to show that it was in bad condition when we got it. When we returned the car after our trip they charged us an ADDITIONAL $235 on my card for gas. We showed them the receipt to prove that we had filled the tank right before bringing it back. They then refunded that additional charge of $235 back to my card.

The employees were going to take $200 off from the original $481 to make up for the damaged vehicle and poor service. He put it on the receipt. He said we just had to call customer service to make the final change since it was prepaid. Two months of calling and ten phone representatives later we still haven't received the money back. The first nine representatives had claimed to write notes on our account and that we will receive the money in 7 business days. Each time they said 'we gave you $235 back so you already got your refund.' With great frustration we explained that the $235 was from an additional charge on a different card because we were wrongfully charged for gas. The promised $200 off the original prepaid $481 was never returned. Instead they returned a measly $12.

They'd finally claim to understand, write notes in our account record and say the problem will be fixed in a couple days. When we'd call to check on it and ask why they hadn't done what they'd promised, the new rep would act like this was the first call and seemed to have no record of any previous discussions with the previous reps. It's like starting from scratch. The dentist is more fun than dealing with these people. (No offense to our hard working dentists out there.) If this review seems too long and detailed imagine how frustrated we've been dealing with lying phone reps and a company giving us the run-around.

The tenth phone rep was condescending and rude. He said we had to give private credit card records to prove our case despite the fact that the previous nine reps had claimed that the refund was already approved. He laughed at my wife's frustration and refused to tell us his name. He said he didn't have a supervisor we could talk to and no other number to call. He finally hung up on us. It's not like my wife was rude or cursing at him to cause him to act that way. This company is exceedingly unprofessional and sketchy. We finally went through our credit card company to dispute the charges completely and are receiving the entire $481 back. It serves AVIS right for such bad treatment of their customers. BOTTOM LINE: DON'T USE AVIS, EVER. DON'T PREPAY EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'LL SAVE MONEY. JUST AVOID AVIS ENTIRELY.

There never was any mention of TARIFF. Or PWD. I had already included CDP or Collision damage protection and theft protection. I rented a large SUV for a family vacation in Cabo MX. Paid for the vehicle in advance but when I checked out there was a 62% upcharge for various items. I rented the SUV for $1300 US dollars. When checking out there was an additional $810 US charge.

    Airport fee - $46

I am an avid traveler and have dealt with many rental car companies. My experience with AVIS was by far the worst experience I have ever had. I got in late (1:00am) to Hartford Airport after flying all day. Made my way to the AVIS counter where I had reserved and prepaid for a "LUXURY" car. The counter experience was actually fine and typical. I found my car and it was the smallest Cadillac they sell. No one could fit in the back seat except for a small child. The car was not clean and smelled of marijuana and incense to the point it made you gag. I was so tired and still had an hour's drive to my final destination. I did not go back to the counter. That was my mistake.

Once I left the airport and got on the highway, I noticed the car pulled dangerous to the left. It was to the point that I was fighting to keep it in the lane. I made it to my destination in New Haven safely. I rode the entire way with the windows down because of the smell. The next morning I called Customer Service to tell them about my experience. After 30 mins of being on hold, the service agent was clearly not in the US and not in an office. I could barely understand her accent and there were dogs barking in the background. Customer Service could not do anything for me but read pre-written lines from a script. It was almost comical.

After another 25 mins with this service agent it was clear they couldn't help me. They advised me to call a local Avis counter. I called the nearest counter and told them my situation. The gentleman on the other line laughed at me and said, "Good luck finding a replacement car in New Haven." I called Customer Service back. Again same situation. On hold for 30 mins, got an agent with canned answers, poor English and very little or no authority to actually help me. I hung up and called the Emergency Roadside Assistance line. Actually got a a very nice gentleman who seemed to be very helpful. He said he would set up a new car at the local counter for me. I told him that I had already called that counter and they didn't have any vehicles. He assured me that he had spoken with them and a vehicle would be there.

I received a text confirming my new reservation so I was confident this guy told me the truth. I drive the car to this counter location and the gentleman behind the counter must of been the same one I spoke to on the phone because he started laughing and said no one called him and they STILL do not have any cars. Frustrated, I call Emergency Roadside Assistance back. I guess because I had an open ticket at ERA with my phone number, the prompts would not allow me to get back to a live person. I called customer service back and they had to have ERA call me back. They proceeded to send me to another counter in a different location and assured me again they would have a car for me.

I got another text message confirming my reservation. I drive to that location.... NO CARS. Completely frustrated having dealt with this situation for 8-9 hours. I parked the car at my hotel and used Uber the rest of my stay. Needless to say, they of course charged me full price for my rental. This company is broken so if you want to avoid these headaches, I highly suggest you use a different rental car company.

Updated on 7/1/2023: It gets WORSE! When I arrived at Seattle airport to return the car, I was checked in and closed the ticket, no problem. Nothing said other than thank you. Then I got the receipt via email as I was headed back to my hotel. CAD 1463.71!!! (The price on the initial agreement was CAD 345.63.) When I looked at the receipt, the majority of the charges were from “Taxable Products/Services.” When I called Avis, they had no explanation and just said that was the price I agreed to. No, no I didn’t. I immediately called my credit card company to report that charge as fraudulent.

I then looked at my other rentals from Avis (3 in 3 weeks) and saw another ridiculous $300 charge for fuel pre-pay from our rental in Calgary AB. Even at the highest price for gas I saw (CAD 1.80/liter) and an empty tank (67 liters per the manufacturer) that would be CAD 187.60. Again I called Avis and asked for an explanation and was told that was the price I agreed to. No, no I didn’t. I called my credit card company to report that charge as fraudulent and continued on my vacation. The charge I had for a rental in NJ was as expected, so at least that was good.

When I got home, I called Avis, who now was expecting payment. As I went through each over-change with the agent, they basically told me “That was entered in error. We’ll correct that charge and credit the bill.” No explanation. Really? What the heck is going on with your Canadian branches Avis? Are they just entering charges just to see if we’re paying attention? That’s borderline criminal. I will never again rent from Avis. Never.

Original review: Partly directed at this Avis location (Hornby Street in Vancouver) and partly directed to the main company. One star because I can not give zero. Beware, this location has NO preferred member amenities. There is ZERO signage directing you anyplace. You can NOT go straight to your car! You need to stand in line. Whatever you do, don't listen to the Avis main number directions, they have NO idea what goes on at this location.

It was a Saturday and there were at least 40 people in line in front of me. I called the main Avis number and they advised me to just go to the car... Not an option since they have no signs or QR code to scan or anything... Then they told me to just go to the counter and tell them I'm a preferred member. I did that and I was told they don't offer any preferred member benefits, "everyone is preferred," and I needed to go back in line. I spoke to the manager and he told me the same thing. So I got back in line and called the Avis main number again and they told me they were unable to do anything for me... Thanks Avis. Back in line and lost about 10 places... What a waste of my time. I will NEVER rent from Avis again. Ever. I'd rather walk.

Avis lies to customers and even advertises on its own website that a credit card or debit card with sufficient funds for the car rental and security deposit can rent a car with a valid driver's license. This is a lie. It is not true. I had very good credit. I am a safe driver with no accidents and had sufficient funds. This was a lie and constitutes as harassment.

Reserved a vehicle for May 23, 2023 at the Albuquerque airport to be returned 14 days later at the Salt Lake City Airport. They charged a $400+ adding fee for that different drop off. Okay, maybe they pay a driver to drive it back to Albuquerque? Clearly not the case as our vehicle has North Carolina a plated so just another scheme to offset their "lower price".

We pre-paid the contract and I thought no problem: if we need the car longer we can just extend and pay the additional days. If we finish earlier we can return it for a refund of unused days. Oops, Avis policy goes only one direction! 30 minutes late adds another day charge, so you know they can do another transaction but I will always be an increase to their fees. So while Avis may seem to paper out as less expensive, they have policies to quickly make up the differences. IF I ever rent from Avis again (and based on their overall reviews here it may be wise to avoid Avis), I will make sure to add up these hidden fees before concluding my analysis. The vehicle was okay but don't be misled by their low price leaders.

We went to the AVIS rental online and selected our rental from the Palm Harbor, FL location and even prepaid for our rental online. Come to find out, the vehicle we reserved at their location was not there and there and they would not comp us a different vehicle without paying the difference. The girl that worked there said they have nothing to do with their website and no control as to what the website says is available at her location. I called customer service and could barely understand the person from their call center. The person told us what we needed was available at a certain location and they could modify our rental there. Well I called that location and they said they don't have it and will not have it at the time we needed it and told us customer service lied.

I called another location and she said she has no control over what they would have available the next day when we needed it. I told her I could modify our reservation to her location and she still said it it gets rented before we get there then it wouldn't be available. What is the point of reserving and paying in advance to reserve a vehicle for them to keep renting the same vehicle. We cancelled our rental and I will never ever rent from them again!! Will never rent from any AVIS. I can't deal with stupidity!!!!

Bottom line - confirm your rental, because when you arrive they may or may not have your car and you might have to wait. Also, don't request an itemized statement because you won't get one. They apparently don't provide one. You will also be charged a $1.00 per day for their Frequent Traveler Program, yippy, more hidden fees. If you're going to a state where there's tolls, you also won't be given a transponder and you could be liable for those charges as well, which is more if you're going online and paying instead of using a transponder. My wife had the worst customer service experience of her life with Avis. She first received a vehicle with a heavy cigarette smoke smell and there were no other vehicles at the location for her to swap. She then had to go to another location and the Avis rep was awful and not empathetic at all! She got a different vehicle, which was smaller and one of the seatbelts did not work. After a half an hour of trying to fix the seatbelt, they gave her a third vehicle. At that point, she had already lost about 2 and a half hours of her day.

I called customer service several times and one rep told me to call back after my wife was done with the rental to get a full refund of the prepaid amount. After returning the vehicle, customer service told me the best they could do was a 20% refund. After arguing and telling the rep that we were lied to, he offered me a 40% refund. Even when my wife returned the vehicle, the location was closed with a sign saying to come back a later. She wasted even more time having to go back later. I cannot believe how utterly incompetent this company was at every step of the way! They could offer to pay me to drive their rental cars and I would refuse. Avoid Avis like the plague!!!!

On the last day, I extended the reservation by one day and the confirmation confirmed the cost would only increase by the one day ($42 + taxes). I then received an email which shows I now accepted the insurance fees for $125 total which I never did. This took three calls to resolve with Avis. At first they only wanted to offer a minimal partial refund until I threatened to file a chargeback for the full amount just to recover my time spent having to get this resolved did the representative offer a "one time courtesy credit".

It makes ZERO sense that someone could even add insurance ex post facto to a rental they've already had out for several days! Oh, and when I went to pick up my "full sized sedan", they had a 2-door coupe waiting for me. She argued with me that it was a "full size" until I showed her Avis's own website that stated "All full-size models are 4-door cars" and they found another vehicle for me. Updated on 05/05/2023: I recently reserved a rental with a paid for in full with a received confirmation only to have it canceled and informed that it could take 7-10 days for my refund. Well, it's been 10 days and upon calling for update, I'm now told it could take up to 15 days. Informed the the barley English speaking customer service rep that I would be filing fraud paperwork with my bank and local police dept. They were like, "You're welcome to do so." Damn straight Baboo. Rep was like, "I promise you that it was already processed but wait a couple more days." Police reports seem to work best. Going forward, I will pay premium for the service as this company is nothing but bad service at best.

Original: I recently reserved and paid in full for a car rental only to be declined at the counter for reasons unknown, but suspect insurance as was asked several times my insurance company name. I tried to explain to rep that rental was already paid for in full but was told he couldn't override the computer. Brilliant, can you provide me a ride back since I was dropped off and had been there for half an hour and was the only one there at the time. Rep could not multi-task and was obviously flustered. So I'm charged/paid in full with a confirmed reservation only to be declined for who knows what reason and when contacting support, connected with broken English at best and on hold for a long time for a supervisor who informs me that it could take 7-10 days for my refund that I had immediately paid for during the online reservation.

I will be filing paperwork with my bank as paid for services that I was declined and never received not to mention the service was the absolute worst that I've ever received from any car rental. Shame on AARP for suggestion such a company. I had a bad feeling walking into this Avis located in Lawrenceville, GA as there were dirty diapers in the parking lot in front of the store. We immediately cancelled due to the excessive cost & Avis did provide a credit on the card after verbally agreeing the app was misleading but refused to compensate us for the credit card transaction fees (2.5% for the initial reservation & another 2.5% for the refund). No fault to the credit card company here. Avis refuses (after many attempts) to compensate us for their error in their misleading app to show the currency that would be charged. Then, I downloaded the app, I completed all the information and I tried to rent a car one online, thinking that may be the result would be different using the website. This time, my application was not only accepted but they also charged the full bill (310 USD) to my credit card. When I went to the airport to get the car, they needed to check my documents -which seems reasonable- but I had to fill out the application form all over again! What is the "advantage" of having an app or a website if at the end you will have to go through the whole process again?

Thirty minutes later, once they checked my documents and wrote all my personal data in the computer they told me that they couldn't give me the car because the system blocked my application. No explanation given, nor apologies for the inconvenience. Yet, like I said earlier, they charged the total cost to my credit card. They told me that I was going to see my refund within 48 hours, but that didn't happen. I called the agency several times (the office where I tried to get the car is in San Luis Potosí, Mexico) and they never took my phone call. I had to call the customer service in the US and I was told that the agency in Mexico never processed my refund. So, if I wouldn't have called them, they would have kept my money. At the end I got my refund but I wouldn't recommend this rental service at all.

Let me start off by saying, what happened from 6:32am to 8:03am? No one in our family smokes. The same way we are held responsible to inspect the vehicle prior to diving out the lot. Avis should be also held to that standard which is we thought happened, when we were told “it was good to go”. I had to wait two weeks for my statement to come out but I sent it as soon as it did. They then asked me to provide a 23 digit transaction number which was not in my statement and of which I have no way of obtaining.

The authorized charge did have a 13 digit transaction number which shows up on the credit card statement. So it boils down to this: Avis charged me over $400 illegally as I did not authorize it then asked me to provide a number I have not received nor am I privy to that number in order to get a refund. I’ve spoken with a supervisor who found the charge on her end but they denied the refund for not having enough information. When I say this is a nightmare, it’ is just that. I really hate leaving negative reviews, and the people at the counter did try their best to help us, but I feel compelled to write this one to warn anyone else. Hopefully you can learn from our experience. We reserved a car for the Guatemala airport and we chose Avis because in their options they offered border permits for other Central American countries. The ones we needed were Belize and Honduras. Once we confirmed the reservation though, there were no instructions on how to arrange for this. After a week of searching I reached out to corporate customer service, and eventually got this reply: "Unfortunately, the only way to contact the location would be via phone number: (502) 2324-9000. We are very sorry that we cannot offer a better solution." (clipped)

I did as instructed and Carlos finally gave me the location's email address. His reply is below: "I’m glad to be of help, I have pulled out your reservation and add a note of your request, concerning our phone call early this morning the cost of the 2 permits letter is $205.00 and you can pay for it once you arrived to the counter, could you please send a picture of your passport we need this information for the permits as well." (complete)

After providing copies of our documents and being assured that all was in order, we didn't have any contact until we showed up at the counter and THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY CARS. That might sound like a normal occurrence to a seasoned traveler, but we are definitely not that. We were told right away that because we hadn't paid when we made the reservation (I would have but we didn't get the option) they didn't have to keep a car for us. What? What's the point of a reservation then? Anyway, they tried their best to find something and managed to dig a car out of somewhere for us, but because they ignored my reservation they also failed to apply for the border permits ahead of time.

The car they wanted to give us would have had to stay in Guatemala, which would essentially wreck 4 days of plans we had in Belize and Honduras. We almost took the deal anyway, since there were no other cars available and we were stranded at the airport, but they tried to make me pay $300 for a damage waiver even though I had my own policy that covers international car rental and even brought a copy of the policy with me. We finally refused and left with no other option than to sit at the airport and figure out what to do. Just awful.

Anyway, if we had done nothing we would have lost around $1,500 in non-refundable reservations and had to find a place to stay for the next four days, costing us even more. What we did instead was booked a next day flight to Belize, cancelled 2 of our hotels and had to book 2 new ones on the fly plus a cab ride to and from the airport. Avis's failure to reserve a car per the terms of our reservation ended up costing us a total of $1,952.40. That's a pretty steep price because of a $125.00 rental, and we didn't even get the car!

DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH BORDER PERMITS. If you absolutely must rely on this service, I would suggest emailing them every day the week before your trip. Make them tell you the VIN of the vehicle they're going to give you, it takes 3 days to get Belize permits so make sure they do what they say they're going to do. If you can pre-pay for the car, do so. That's all I got, thanks for reading and hopefully these folks don't wreck your week like they did ours.

Unfortunately, I took her word for it and did not check the rental agreement.

I understand that the rental agreement states that the responsibility for the tolls lies with the customer, but I believe that this is a clear miscommunication on the part of your representative. I am requesting that your company rectify this issue and waive the extra fee charge. As a long-time customer of AVIS, I am disappointed by this experience and am no longer willing to continue being a customer if this issue is not resolved. I look forward to hearing from you and finding a solution to this problem.

The vehicle I rented was months behind the maintenance schedule sticker in the window, I only noticed it after driving a few minutes and the car losing power on a highway and flashing several hazard lights. Tire pressure warnings, Fuel Injection failures, I couldn't even properly merge into a highway as the car wouldn't get enough speed.

Contacting the support, I was instructed to take the vehicle to an Avis location in Netherlands to get a replacement, which already disrupted the vacation, but I understand issues happen. Only to get there and be informed that I could not get a replacement in that location (or any location other than the one where I first got the vehicle), wasting quite a lot of time (especially if you add the time on the phone with support).

I reached out to support again and was told "Sorry for your experience, there is nothing we can do at the moment". I have a case with them that I'm actively following up and I still haven't received a single update. This company has no respect with customer lives, renting unsafe vehicles and providing no support at all. They didn't offer any kind of compensation. I would strongly suggest anyone looking to rent a car, to go with other providers. I never had such a bad experience with a car rental in my whole life (and I do reasonable amounts of travel for work).

After picking vehicle up from Illinois on Wednesday the tire light came on just as I was leaving the airport. I was thinking a tire needed some air, then heading to Wisconsin I decided to get the tire checked only to discover that there was a nail in the tire. I didn't think it would have been safe to drive the vehicle all the way back to Chicago but rather for safety reasons drop it off at nearest airport which was Milwaukee WI, that following Saturday I took the vehicle to another tire place and the worker was not having a good day before I got there, his customer service skills were very nasty, so I left and asked my Son to help me find the nail as to take a picture only to discover that there are two (2) nails in the same time.

So I called Avis and filed a claim regarding this situation, So I dropped the vehicle off at Mitchell Airport and the clerk said "you should have drove it back to Chicago any way like you signed to contract for", well I told her that Avis should have given me a safer vehicle like they said they provide. At the end of the day, I was charge $494.25 extra on top of the original rental fee of $270. So I contacted my bank to dispute the $494.25 unauthorized charge due to the reasons above including my safety, as well as Avis breach in contract to provide safe and inspected vehicles.

BEWARE: I work in customer service industry and calmly tried to resolve this but Avis is deceitful, dishonest, misleading, and uninterested in resolving our customer service issue, a defective rental car we were unable to use. I reserved & prepaid a rental for pick up at the Mpls/St. Paul airport AVIS location. After driving in winter conditions through the city it was obvious the car needed repair & was difficult to use. Drove 30 miles to park it at safe place and had others pick me up. Immediately called Roadside Assistance 4 times, no help. Emailed Manager (Karen P.) 4-5 times, no help. Attended event but returned car next a.m. Manager told me he would fully refund in 10-14 days and credit $100 since we put money into it trying to get it to work right. We did not get it in writing; he lied. 3 weeks later and multiple calls or transfers I reported no refund was rec'd. Reached a rep who gave me a case # and said he'd refer it to 'prepaid billing'.

Days later, I received only partial refund despite the rep verifying it was only driven 65 miles. Called to request difference only to find the case # was false; lied to again. Told "no notes" in account or on file. Lied to again. Every rep I spoke to promised I was being transferred to right person, gave me the 'direct phone #', or would 'make notes' on acct and it was all lies. Today, 1/12/23, I called and calmly went through issue three times, with three reps. Spoke to a woman at **, George at 800-621-2844 and the last one named "Jame" told me there was no case # and no notes and I had to deal with the mgr. who promised us the full refund which was no help because that mgr. is located 1400 miles away and you can't call the airport Avis counter directly. He told me this just before hanging up on me. I was waiting for him to give me some options and when he hung up. That rep knew that by referring me to that manager that it was not even possible.

All the reps I've dealt with in the past month only offered lies, transfers, and then hung up on me. We've disputed the difference with our bank but BEWARE of Avis. We will cancel our membership and never use them again. We thought they were reputable but just the opposite. They caused us so much hardship, wasted time, hours on the phone, missed time on our destination end and did not refund the full amount. We weren't even requesting the money that we spent on the car to make t operational or safe nor the promised $100 credit; we just asked four our money back.

If I could give 0 star, I would. I dealt with 2 reps from Avis in 2 different locations. I dealt with 2 complete crooks. I think they're trained to be dishonest and just squeeze every penny they can in any possible way. The 1st guy told me I needed to get insurance. I didn't. I told him I was insured by my American Express credit card. He didn't want my wife's card (same business card).

Then I tried another card my bank blocked. I told him my Chase credit card would work. I was so tired of arguing, it was midnight, I gave another credit card without noticing it was a Chase card, and that I didn't need to pay for insurance (it doubled the rental price). The guy knew it but didn't say anything. I tried to get a refund the next morning, they said no. The first guy even recommended I prepaid my gas. When I looked at the screen, it said "$75" (the rep forgot to mention that). I told him it seemed awfully expensive. He argued it would be at least $85 elsewhere (absolutely not true). It turned out to be a very small car. Full tank cost less than $50. The bottom line is: Run away from AVIS and from car rentals as a whole I would say. I hadn't tried TURO so far, but from now on, I think I will!

My husband had a rental agreement with them for 6 months. We had no issues with the car whatsoever. Our nightmare started two nights ago when we were home. A towing truck showed up and started towing the car. We have tried to confront the towing person to explain what it was all about but he hadn’t even explained who sent him or why. Wouldn’t even let us pick up our personal belongings and accused us in front of our children and neighbors of stealing the car. What was obviously incorrect because our contract was still going on.

We had no one to turn to since it was pretty late so we had to wait until the morning to start making phone calls to try to figure out what was this all about. Of course their customer service had no answers and anybody whom we have been referred to couldn’t come up with answers. They even failed to contact the branch who apparently ordered the towing (Saint Louise Missouri, aka airport branch). We never got a phone call from them in regards the incident or our belongings. Even their own customer service couldn’t get a hold of them. The phone number provided of course leads you nowhere when you try to get answers yourself. Definitely expected to sue them soon. Wouldn’t recommend even my worst enemies to rent a car from them. Still trying to recover from this terrible nightmare. Haven’t had a sleep in three days now.

Do not rent from them! We were in Costa Rica last week in December 2022. We rented a car from Liberia airport. First things first - Avis does not have a counter at the airport as advertised. Instead, you must catch a shuttle to take you to their location. Once we made it there, their representative lied to our faces that it is Costa Rica's law to have an insurance and that the insurance policy offered through our Chase credit card needs a ''special letter'' type of approval from Avis headquarters. We decided to purchase an insurance policy, we believed them. The representative clearly stated that insurance will cost us $43 per day. We had a car for 6 days, meaning total rate will be $258. Guess what; we returned home, couple of days later our credit card was charged for $343.

I emailed Avis immediately asking what the hell is going on. They replied stating that $258 was the insurance rate BUT there were taxes and fees charged on top of that. When I informed them that we weren't told this, nor that breakdown bill was presented to us, they apologize and ended the conversation. Never again with Avis.

Unfortunately, the new van wasn't properly prepped prior to renting, so it was not cleaned and only had a half tank. Again unfortunately, the agent printed up the contract showing a full tank. He marked my copy as half-full, initialed it to verify, and told me to return it to Rome with same amount of fuel. We did so, explaining the situation to the agent in Rome to make sure there was no misunderstanding. He assured me all was well and asked to keep my copy with the agent's verification. I did so.

Big mistake on my part because now my proof was in the hands of the company. Upon returning home I found that Avis/Budget had charged me $158 to refuel the half tank that was "missing". After many back and forth emails, the bottom line is they refuse to honor their agents' promises, insisting I provide proof--proof that they hold. They did not contact the agents to confirm by position and refuse to refund the money. There are several rental companies in Italy. Take my advice and find one that is ethical and honest--not Avis/Budget.

I caught the flight and started my work the next day in Canada. They did not send the receipt by e-mail. A week later I went to rent a car in Tampa and they mentioned that I still have the above car in my possession and had not returned it yet. It was 7:00 a.m. and it took 2 hours for the customer service to start to answer the phone as they are based on the Central time. They still could not figure out what the problem was until an agent looked at the computer and realize it was somebody else's name on my contract but with my identity: my driving license number, my date of birth, my credit card number and address but with a different car. They put an end to that rental that day but they still charged me for a week that I had not had the car.

They sent me a case number in the email to solve the issue but it hasn't solved yet and put me in do not rent list! When I call now even case number is on the other person's name and they do not recognize my e-mail. The customer service hangs up on you and you have to call again and wait.
