As an Avis President’s Club member, I expected professionalism and consistency. Instead, I experienced one of the worst customer service breakdowns I’ve ever encountered. I picked up a rental van late Saturday evening to prepare for a one-day family trip the following weekend. I had already installed a baby car seat, toddler booster, and other personal items in the van overnight. Unfortunately, the van was impounded early Saturday morning (between midnight and 5 a.m.). That part was my mistake for parking where towing occurred — but everything that happened afterward was entirely Avis’s failure.
First call: “We’ll retrieve it in 2–3 days, and you’ll be charged a late fee while it’s impounded.”
Next call: “Actually, it takes 5–7 days.”
Another rep: “It could take 7–10 calendar days. You’ll still be charged until we get it back.”
One finally gave me a case number and assured me no late fees would apply.
I was also told Avis would contact the towing company so I could retrieve my belongings — but they never did.
When I called the towing company directly, they confirmed Avis had not contacted them at all. I called Avis again that afternoon and got another rep who was rude, dismissive, and completely unhelpful, contradicting the prior representative entirely.
The result:Three days of endless phone calls
Five different stories about what will happen
Zero accountability or follow-through
No access to my baby’s car seat or personal belongings inside the van
And a complete breakdown of communication between Avis, its roadside assistance, and the towing company.
Even if the original tow was my own error, the chaotic, inconsistent, and unprofessional response from Avis was unacceptable — especially for a long-time President’s Club member. Avis, you can do better. This experience shows a complete lack of coordination, empathy, and training within your customer service team. Until this is addressed, I’ll be taking my business — and my company’s travel account — elsewhere.

Rented a car May 2025 from Milwaukee. An uninsured driver hit us causing a small amount of damage to front bumper and grill. Our insurance company worked with Budget/Avis claims finally got an email saying they closed the claim in Aug but got a phone call and email saying we owe $7000. The call and email had a new claim number and is way more then the initial charge. Someone needs to stop this company. They also charged us for cleaning after 3 week rental saying excessive dirt for a bit of sand soil on the floor mats which is typical for a 3 week use during rain. DO NOT RENT from Budget or Avis. They will screw you over. They are untrustworthy.

AVIS charges you $15 "fuel convenience fee" if you drive less than 75 miles. They say you can avoid this by showing a fuel receipt when you drop off the car, but when we dropped off a car at DFW airport, NOT ONE of the 5 customer service agents we talked to outside or in the customer assistance booth could enter the receipt into their system. We had to wait until the charge hit our account and then dispute it. Obviously they hope you don't notice it and just end up paying it.

We placed our order for a rental car to be picked up at Pittsburgh Intl. airport. Including our flight number was mandatory. Our flight landed an hour late and, when we got to the Avis counter, it was closed. No note. Nothing. We tried several phone numbers for Avis and none yielded an answer. Ended up renting a car from Alamo. The next day, I received an mail from the manager of the Pittsburgh location which included an email we could contact if we had and issues. We emailed twice and never received a response. We will NEVER rent from Avis again.

Prepaid for my rental and declined all extras, but was later charged $23/day for “optional services” I never agreed to. Avis claimed it was an upgrade I could’ve declined if I had read the fine print. The agent never mentioned an upgrade at the counter. After a long flight and with a line behind me, reading every detail wasn't realistic. Felt like a sneaky upsell. Be careful and double-check everything before signing.

Phone customer service is awful. Everyone you talk to can’t speak English and they wanted to charger $700 one way for a less than 24 hour use of a car and to top It off my husband is a veteran and they will give you the veteran discount but then wanted to charge you. 50 a mile because you are getting the discount. What sense does that make when we had to drive 300 miles. Terrible company. Will never rent from them again.

We reserved a car luxury car from Newark airport on August 15 through September 1 for $2500. The car was clean and looked ok. After a few days Noticed low pressure tire light was coming on and service engine Every time I started the car, so the car hadn’t been serviced. I looked at the dashboard and misread the odometer thinking it was 4500 miles since that’s about normal when I rent a car. this vehicle actually had 46,000 miles brakes were worn. I noticed that when I was driving on interstate when slowing down, and on Massachusetts interstate a state trooper pulls me over now the officer comes to passenger side. My wife is very nervous. Think we did something wrong. We didn’t but it they rented me a car that was three months unregistered, and it was unsafe. No registration was found in the vehicle. I was issued a citation, but the officer issued it to Avis.

We booked our rental nine months in advance and prepaid for a one-way trip from Jasper to Calgary. Upon returning the vehicle, we received an invoice showing the final charges—which turned out to be $116.80 less than what we had prepaid. When I noticed this discrepancy, I immediately called Avis and was assured the difference would be credited back to our card within 3–5 business days. Three weeks later, no credit had appeared. When I followed up today, the customer service representative told me there was a “non-refundable prepay” amount of $116.80. This fee was never listed on our original rental invoice.
I pointed this out, but was told it was “in the contract”—a contract we were never emailed or given access to. Any reputable company would simply honour the updated, lower total and issue a refund. Instead, Avis held onto our money for nine months, only to later claim part of it was non-refundable. To make matters worse, cancellations were not allowed at any time after booking—something highly unusual compared to hotels, airlines, or restaurants, which typically offer at least some flexibility. This experience highlights just how inflexible Avis is at every level. For that reason, we will absolutely be avoiding them in the future.

BUYER BEWARE!!! Absolute liars! I wished I would have searched these reviews before allowing myself to be duped be this company. I hope no one else will fall victim to this company like I did. Here’s my story: I am a pilot and I commute on airplanes to get to work. I could not get back to the Orlando Airport (MCO) where my car was but I was able to get into the Daytona Beach Airport (DAB). I looked up an Uber and it would cost $115 to get a ride from DAB to MCO. So I went to the rental car counters and decided to talk to the first person that was available at the time, which in this case was Avis, unfortunately for me. I asked if they had a 1 way rental to MCO that would be worth it to not take the Uber for $115. The Avis guy said, “yeah of course, I’ve got you man!” So he proceeded to click away and then say, I can get you in a vehicle for $70.
I thought, okay that plus gas, tax and tolls would be around $90. Sure I’ll save about $25-30 after tip. Okay I’ll do it. Well unbeknownst to me, he tricked me by putting my rental return back to DAB and not a 1 way to MCO like he told me. When I arrived to MCO they said there would be a $150 fee on top of my rental rate for dropping the vehicle there. I said no way, why would I do that when just 2 hours ago I rented the vehicle on the premises I was dropping it here for the $70 rate and not pay the Uber cost. Meanwhile, hour of run around later a Manager finally said, "Okay I took it off for you and printed out a receipt." I asked that Manager what I could have done to not end up in this mess in the first place. His answer was, “Don’t trust the guy you spoke with in the first place”. So this proves that even employees of the same company don’t trust each other, thus my start (they are liars).
I ended up getting charged the full amount with the $150 fee to bring it to about $250. I disputed it with customer service and was left with them saying there was nothing they could do. So ends up even the Manager at the MCO airport lied to me. The moral to the story, don’t trust Avis. It’s worth paying more for a reputable company that actually cares about their customers. I fly for a very honest and reputable company who cares about their customers and brand and would never and left it with “there’s nothing we can do for you!” BUYER BEWARE!!!

Fraudulent charges, promises that are not kept, worst ever customer service, cars with problems, are a a few of the experiences we had with Budget-Avis in Milan and Verona. Read your contracts carefully. You end up signing without realizing you are signing something that does not reflect their verbal promises. And to top it all. Booking.com is as bad as they are.

My review is about the Avis car rental company, not one specific location. I have spent 2 months dealing with this company and I cannot believe what HORRIBLE human beings they are. I would actually give them zero stars if I was able to. I rented a 7 passenger vehicle back in April for a trip family trip in July and paid close to $800 for this rental. When I arrived at my vacation destination in July, they told me that the car I reserved was not available and a 4 passenger vehicle was the only thing they had. It left half of my group without a ride. They basically told me it’s either take the 4 passenger or be without a vehicle for my trip. This led to hundreds of dollars being spent on Ubers, canceling things in the vacation that we have had booked for months. I lost thousands of dollars because of this company and everything I had to cancel.
When I returned from my trip, I called them and spoke to customer service. I explained what happened and their response was “we’ll give you a discount next time”. Told them at this point, I will never rent a car from them again. Basically took this as far as speaking to a supervisor that told me they’ll give me a $100 refund. Told them that doesn’t make up for the money I lost. Supervisor then repeated “that’s all you’re getting” over and over to where I couldn’t get a word in. Then she said “I’m done with this conversation” and hung up on me. I called back and got another supervisor that apologized and promised me $300 refund. I was mentally drained from all of this and said fine.
A month later, I never received my refund so I called again. I am then told that my refund is being processed and hasn’t gone through yet. I asked how long would it take and they told me it shouldn’t take long. Another month goes by and I call again. That person now tells me that the company found that refunding me $300 was way too much of a compensation and said that they would only give me $200. I found that ridiculous when that was not what I was promised so they connected me to another supervisor and he then told me that since I did not accept the $200 he was now lowering it to $100. I cannot believe that this was a company that is still in business and it is insane to me. How they treat people. Absolutely disgusting.

We have had multiple bad experiences that took a very long time to resolve and it was only with the help of BBB that we finally were able to get refunds. We were charged over $200 after a claim was made that we had returned a vehicle on empty. Thankfully, we had taken a photo of the full tank. An employee didn’t bother to check the vehicle, but just marked it as being returned as empty. We had an issue where a tire went flat, even though nothing had been run over, and they didn’t want to do anything to help us. Again took weeks for them to admit their mistake and give us a refund. Returned a car at the airport in Indianapolis, Indiana, spoke directly to an employee in the parking garage who said we were good to go, but then never marked the car as returned. Took weeks to resolve that issue even though Avis repeatedly admitted they had the vehicle and it had not been returned late.
In the meantime, we kept getting phone calls, text, and email saying we had kept the vehicle. Other issues with being charged for things we should not have. After finally getting everything resolved, we decided to give them one more chance. Flew from Florida to Boise, Idaho. Had a reservation well in advance. Walk up to the counter and we are told they are not allowed to rent to us - no explanation. Finally figured out on the phone Avis security had never bothered to clear the incident in Indiana and had put us on a do not rent to list. We were not told this and we were allowed to make a reservation and had no idea we were on any kind of a list.
We were stranded with no vehicle and being treated as if we were criminals - they said they would not rent to anyone in our party if I was going to be in the vehicle - even though it was an Avis employee who had made the mistake months before. Avis admits everything but it takes weeks to clear everything and it takes multiple phone calls and emails to get things resolved. This last incident was the last straw and we will never rent from them again.

Avis rental cars are crooks and robbers. Sergio. It would appear to me that all of the representatives are just as bad as the next one at Avis. I have spent literally hours trying to sort this out and THIS IS WHAT I GET???! In simple terms, I am sick of the runaround you guys are giving me. I fully paid for the rental $3052.59 when I booked the rental. When I brought the car back on the correct day as the booking was for I dropped the car off and signed the paperwork. When I get back to Canada I find that you have charged me again $2522.53.
A few days later you charge me another $1065.01. You've charged me a total of $6640.13 and you think that's fair and correct??? You are all crooks and robbers. Your "investigation" process is flawed and done by what must be described as idiots. I'm going to get great happiness posting this on the internet and see what happens. Thanks for absolutely nothing,

I prepaid for a four-day rental from Avis at Raleigh Durham Airport, with an online price of $222. However, my credit card was charged $329 without clear explanation of the additional charges. The pick-up process was very slow, taking about 45 minutes due to a long line. When I finally received the vehicle, I noticed it had a bald tire, which I only realized after driving onto the interstate. The car pulled severely to the left, and thankfully, the tire eventually exploded at a low speed, avoiding a serious accident. It was concerning that an employee allowed such a vehicle to leave the lot without a proper safety check.
Customer service was unhelpful and showed little interest in addressing my safety concerns or compensating for the time lost traveling 80 miles round trip to replace the car. Additionally, my rental price mysteriously increased from $222 to $329 after this incident. Overall, this experience was frustrating and worrying regarding safety and transparency. I recommend that Avis conduct thorough mechanical inspections before releasing vehicles to ensure passenger safety. Do better Avis!

We purchased our car rental package with American Airlines. In Indianapolis, we were shocked at how long & slow line at the Avis counter with only 2 employees. We waited just over 2 hours & at the counter. The lady at the counter couldn't check & see what we would be charged. There was one $300+/-charge that came up on the credit card machine that she explained was a security deposit & to call Avis with questions. The charge should have been $200, but came up $300 and she couldn’t explain why.
In the parking garage, Josh was the employee working. There were marks on the hood & front area around the hood of the car he was giving us. I was worried about being held responsible for this "damage". Josh explained it was a new vehicle & we wouldn't be charged. When looking inside the vehicle, the car was full of trash, we asked about where charging ports were located & Josh told us to go to a gas station & pick up an adapter.
At the gate, the wonderful female employee (not being sarcastic, she was great), notated the hood & front-end marks on the “pink slip”. She notated that the car only had 4000 miles & that “Josh” hadn’t even taken the time to put gas in the car! It had less than 1/8th of a tank of gas. This sweet lady explained to us to take a picture of the “pink slip” that most likely when we return the vehicle, the employees will make that “pink slip” disappear & we would be charged for items that we should not be charged for. We were given a dirty rental car, with trash (cups, sunglasses, receipts, & used band aids), hood & front-end marks, & NO FUEL! Terrible customer service.
Upon the end of our trip, we made sure to put more fuel in the vehicle than it had when we picked it up. Later that day two separate charges came through on our credit card. One over $300 & another just under $50. Since returning the vehicle I have had daily emails with Avis disputing these unexpected charges, some of which are for fuel.
This has been the most disappointing and frustrating transaction of our trip & we won’t be using Avis again. To say we are frustrated is an understatement. My advice is to look into other car rental companies. It seems like such a racket with all these crazy fees and surcharges for everything. Somehow, read the fine print before getting to the counter.

STOP!!! Whatever you do, run, don’t walk, from Avis. I rented a car from the Avis location at Terminal B, San Jose Mineta International Airport on August 28, 2025. I was outright defrauded by Avis. First, I rented the car at about 5:30 PM. However, I did not need the car until 7:30 PM and asked if I could make the reservation and get the car at 7:30 PM. Avis told me that the rental rates were going up at 6:00 PM and that I should rent the car before 6:00 PM to avoid the cost increase. That was an outright lie.
And, the Avis’s lies and fraud continued. I told Avis that I needed a car with adaptive cruise control. I told them that I have been driving cars with adaptive cruise control for eight years, and that it would be unsafe for me to drive a car without adaptive cruise control because I am used to driving cars with adaptive cruise control. They told me that the car that I was renting had adaptive cruise control. The truth is that the car Avis rented to me was a stripped down model that did not have adaptive cruise control.
And, more Avis fraud and lies. I asked Avis if they had a location in Monterey, CA. They told me that there was a location at the Monterey airport. I asked if there were any Avis locations in downtown Monterey, as opposed to the airport. Avis told me that the Monterey airport was their only location in Monterey. I told them that I would return the car at the Monterey airport. Nonetheless, Avis put the return location as the San Jose airport, which is a two hour drive from Monterey.
And, even more Avis fraud and lies. Without telling me that they did so, Avis charged me for every optional charge—e.g., Loss Damage Waiver, Personal Accident Insurance, etc., etc…. I told them that I wanted none of the extras, but they included them nonetheless. It is my individual, personal, subjective belief that I was ripped off by this company. The guy do not want to listen. I called AVIS again after returning the car, they said the 2 days credit for future rental. They’d what log in system. We can not see what they log on the other side, they rip you off if you do not check your receipt.
Now all rental return, they do not want to listen. They gave me coupon for future rental. And I told them, why would I rent in future with this experience? And on top of that, they charged me for all days with extra drive and taxes on full amount and now when I use the coupon, I will have to pay for extra drive and tax again for their mistake.
Am I eligible for lawsuit to put mine and my daughter's life in danger with no violent in car and car could go on fire if we didn’t check. They're saying that they are giving me compensation, actually they are not because they charged me extra for fuel and late fee, which was not valid. If 0 stars was an option, I would give that. Avis roadside assistance is a joke. Within 30 minutes of driving off the airport lot, the tire popped and their was no spare in the car, only a repair kit, which wouldn't repair this damage. Instead we had to wait for a tow truck so one of us could be taken back to get the replacement car, while the rest of us got an Uber to our destination. The 'Roadside Assistance' abandoned us at the repair lot on a Sunday afternoon. We were supposed to be taken to the rental counter at the airport to get the replacement, but instead was just left miles from the airport with no assistance and nobody local to help guide us where to go.
After multiple calls to get a credit for the incredibly dangerous situation Avis left us in, I now get a bill in the mail for this roadside assistance, 10 days after the rental was returned. If stranded at this center ask for Jude probably you maybe able to leave with a car otherwise you will be asked to go somewhere else. Will I refer someone to Avis Car rental? 🤔 Maybe, maybe not. Will I move to another car rental company having used Avis for over a 10 years? I’m definitely considering!

Finally after 1 hour in Stifling heat and high humidity, I get my rent car with weak A/C. 2 days into a week long rental go to get in car for a day trip to the jungle. A/C no longer works AT ALL! Renters. I never do this but had to share this experience. I had a rental agreement with Avis, which I did online. The total for the 24-hour rental was $115. When I went to pick up my rental, at which I was 45 minutes early, there was a line of about 8 people behind me. The Avis representative was curt, impatient and rushed me through the process. He kept telling me to hurry up and sign because the line is big. At no point did he disclose that I would be charged an additional hour or the dollar amount.
Upon checking out, they emailed me my receipt with an additional $44 charge. When I questioned it, they had told me I picked the car up 45 minutes early. I explained that was never disclosed and they didn’t want to hear it. I took it up with my credit card company who had the amount removed. 2 months later, I received a letter from Avis saying if I do not pay the remaining portion. My privileges would be terminated. I enclosed the letter. Renters think twice about renting from this company.

I was quoted a weekly rental price of $839 dollars. I was charged $ 1741 after a tsunami delayed our car pickup by three days. This, despite a phone call to Avis (airport Honolulu) saying our flight had been canceled and our date of arrival changed to Aug 2. The only“ “modification” was a three-day loss to our vacation and an additional Avis charge of over $900. We were not advised of this at pickup, received no “hard copy” rental receipt and were only notified of this upcharge (after car pick up) through a credit card notification.

I don't live in Pennsylvania but I fly in/outta PHL airport about 10x's a year and I always get a car from Avis & it's almost always a terrible situation! 1st I would like to say that I'm a Presidents Club member so I'm supposed to be a top tier customer but hardly ever feel this way when I come there. The workers at the Preferred station always have a slight attitude, on their phones not really paying the customers (well at least me) much attention or wanting to do their jobs.
Then the car selection is almost always bad because it's always limited, the vehicle that you might select is almost always assigned to someone else (according to these workers), at least 7 times that I've gotten a car from here I needed to return it to a different airport because of either (oil change light, low air in tires, engine light, squeaky brakes, etc etc). But the last time I flew into there (Aug 2025) on a late flight (landed around 12:30am), my name wasn't on the Preferred board (plus it was closed) so I had to go to the main rental counter.
The vehicle that I specifically reserved (pre-paid, etc) wasn't available and all they had was less desirable cars there (this ordeal took about a hour 1 1/2 to finally get rectified)!! 😡😡 But I left there feeling a little happy, vindicated and somewhat appreciated. Only because the night manager there name Eric went over and beyond finding me a suitable replacement (he drove us around the entire lot a few times until finally solving this issue), while simultaneously helping out other customers during this process! And with that being said I just wished this location had a few Eric's working/managing there (all shifts and counters) because this place would go from a 2 Star to a 5 Star hub

Rented a car at the Myrtle Beach airport on August 3 till the 9th (Sunday to Saturday) and was quoted a decent price. Upon returning home and looking at the credit card bill, the price was well over what was quoted. Customer service claimed they had to put gas in the car and that I agreed to the "roadside assistance." Neither was true. When told that I have a receipt for the gas at a station 2 miles away, she "Suddenly realized" that yes, I had filled the tank, but since I signed the contract, I was responsible for the roadside assistance. Plain and simple...they will try and rob you. Go somewhere else!

I will simplify this. I was scammed by the local Avis agent by rushing me without going over anything. I was told over the phone that the charge was going to be about $500 for the week. Next thing I know, I was asked to pay over $700. He snuck the insurance on the bill, but he didn’t ask if I wanted it. He never went over anything with me. Feeling rushed as if he was doing me a favor, I signed the paperwork and swiped my credit card. I figured I would get out of his way and look at it and then call Customer Service. I noticed the $258 charge for insurance. I immediately called CS, and told him I didn’t want the insurance because I already have good insurance. I told him that I understand paying for the insurance for first day because I had already driven away. He made notes and said that will be taken off once the car was ret.
The other issue was that I was emailed a coupon for 25% off my next rental, and had to make the reservations online to use it. I tried but the vehicle was not showing online. So I couldn’t use it. He made notes and said that will be taken off once the car was returned, and that I was to call back once the vehicle was returned. I call Customer Service today, and the representative basically told me that she wouldn’t do anything about it. It was very difficult to understand any words she was saying, but she sounded very perturbed, so I discontinued the conversation. The vehicle that I rented was so filthy inside. Sticky residue multiple places, with food pieces and filth everywhere. So I am guessing that no sanitation was done. I will never rent another vehicle from Avis or Budget, unless they do what is right.

We had a very disappointing experience with this car rental company. After returning the vehicle, we were charged an unexpected cleaning fee for $450 without any prior communication. The car only had a small amount of sand and some pet hair — nothing excessive or unusual for a rental. There was no explanation, no courtesy call, and no chance to address the issue before they processed the charge. The lack of transparency and poor communication left us feeling taken advantage of. We will not be renting from them again and cannot recommend them to others.

We just had our worst Avis experience ever. We’ve been Avis Preferred Members for over 25 years. Avis and Hertz were the premier car rental services for decades. Over the past 5 years Avis has really dropped in service, quality, and customer focus. We just rented from Avis in Costa Rica (SJO) and they nearly doubled my reserved rate. After 9 hours of traveling to SJO, we took the Avis shuttle to their distant and isolated office. The Avis Rep told us our guaranteed rate was booked through Avis USA and this was Avis CR, which he said was different. He was very condescending and rude. Our week long car rental went from $463 to over $780. When the rental was ready we walked around it to check for dents and scratches. The Avis Rep told us the car was full of fuel, handed us our contract, and pointed to the exit.
We drove the car for 6 days and filled it up the night before departure. When we drove back to the Avis lot the car started to make a rattling noise and shake. The Avis Rep asked if we filled the fuel up. We told him the car was full of fuel. He went out to the car and came back inside. He then asked what type of fuel we used. We did not know because the only fill up was full service at Delta Jaco. The Avis Rep then told us we owed $500 to flush out the fuel system because the car had been filled with regular and it required diesel. The same Avis Rep who checked us in was also checking us out. When we picked up the car, he never told us we were renting a diesel engined vehicle. There were no notices in the vehicle or on any of the Avis contact, reservation, or initial inspection paperwork.
We had no way of knowing the car was diesel. All five family members who stood at the Avis counter at pick up and through the walk around told the Avis Rep he hadn’t mentioned the car was diesel. He was indifferent to our points and said “your credit card will be charged $500 for the repairs”. I refused to give my approval for the penalty fee, so the Avis Rep told us we would still be charged. He then told the Avis shuttle driver to not let us ride back to the airport. The Avis Rep actually told us to get alternative transportation to the airport. Our family of five had to arrange an Uber to pick us up at the Avis Office. We immediately reported the issue to our credit card company and put a hold on all future Avis charges. We would never use Avis Car Rental outside the USA again.

This was the worst experience. Our car key fob had low battery within one hour of our vacation, and we were told by the staff to get it replaced at a local AutoZone, then keep our receipt so they could refund it. That is how it began, and by the end so much of our vacation time was dedicated to car issues before finally exchanging it, and after speaking to countless people we are still waiting on a slight refund to compensate for our time, but I kid you not, at least 6 days worth of the past few weeks have been spent speaking to someone from Avis. We will never rent from them again.

This agency and location are an absolute disgrace to the rental industry. Upon arrival, there was a two-hour wait just to reach the counter—while staff appeared to be sitting idle—only to be told there were no cars available and that I would need to wait again in an “express” line outside. I also needed to update my reservation to return the car two days early out of a six-day rental (totaling $484). I was assured by the counter agent that the difference would be automatically credited. Instead, the final bill was only $20 less. After spending additional time on hold with customer service, I learned that returning the vehicle 33% earlier apparently equated to just $20 in savings.
Had the counter been transparent about this policy, I would have canceled on the spot and rebooked with a company that had vehicles available and fair pricing. This feels like a blatant scam, and the lack of disclosure is unacceptable. The CEO of Avis needs to take immediate action to address this predatory business model before more customers experience this level of frustration and dishonesty. Rental reservation (6 days)and E-Receipt (4 days) attached with at the exact same rate.

Point of sale ambiguity. We were told we could rent a vehicle from your company using a debit card. We expressly specified the type of vehicle and pick up location. However, when attempting to pick up the vehicle at the location, it was stated emphatically at that point a credit card was needed. Like everyone else, we try as much as possible, to limit the release of sensitive information such as credit card numbers and the like. With that said, had we been prudently advised a credit card was necessary at the location your company was aware of when the reservation was made, we would have been prepared to present one at the point of sale.
Moreover, the credit card would have been in the name of the person renting the vehicle. Since we were not advised that a credit card was mandatory at the specified location, we are of the opinion that the quagmire and inconvenience could have been avoided and we would have been on our way to a planned family outing. The experience seemed capricious, perfunctory and ambiguous. Be assured we will share this unpleasant experience with everyone who gives us a second of their time. We will not make the mistake of considering you or any of your affiliates in the future.

After picking up a dangerous, dirty car with 88k miles from another Avis location, I was told I had to drive it to Logan Airport to exchange it—even after telling them it felt unsafe on the highway. Once I got to Logan, I stood in line for an hour and had to re-explain everything because the system was a mess. They gave me another car which ALSO shook badly at high speeds. Avis never told me roadside assistance was an option until my father (a car expert) insisted the car wasn’t safe to drive and demanded action. Only then did they agree to tow it and get me a new car.
When I came back to Logan again, shaking from stress and barely packed for my cross-country trip, the staff were rude and dismissive. I was told I hadn’t been there the day before (I had!) and refused further help because I was visibly upset. I eventually got a replacement that seems mechanically OK but is terribly uncomfortable. I’ve wasted dozens of hours, spent $1000, and been given unsafe vehicles twice. Never again.

Everyone in line gave up and tried to get cars from other rental companies. I took an Uber to the hotel that night and then an Uber back to airport in the morning to get my car. The Avis person had no interest in my experience but gave me a car.
After I returned my car, I saw that they only charged me from the time I actually picked up my car but had the difference in a category called 'Non-Refundable Difference'. After a lot of time, I finally reached an Avis rep in customer service. They said that because I pre-paid, I couldn't get a refund even though their staff had abandoned their desk during working hours. I filed a claim and have been adding to my claim now for three weeks without any contact from them and certainly no refund for the amount that I pre-paid but could not get my car. I can't believe they treat their customers like this. In the future, I will have to be more careful and less trusting. AVIS: What a bunch of crooks.
Original Review: I recently rented a car in Kalispell, Montana. I will not be renting from AVIS again. The check-in process was very sketchy. The person at the desk told me to take photos of the car, which was very odd. I understood why later because there was a crack in the windshield. On the last day, the car broke down. It would not start when we tried to leave our motel. I called their emergency assistance number. After you get past the AI assistant, you talk to a person who is reading off a script. We are lucky our car did not break down in a national park. The most important thing you need when you rent a car is for the engine to start and AVIS failed at that.

They didn't give us the car we were supposed to get. They put down 22 miles when it had over 60,000 miles. After 3 days driving it we realized the license expired 3 months earlier. When we tried to get a different car they refused to get us a new one at first. They told us to drive it and if we got pulled over they would pay for it. We were driving from Missouri to Utah. If I were to get pulled over the car could get impounded then me and my family could be left on the side of the road. So after 4 and a half hours and arguing with customer service they found us a car (that was a downgraded from what we paid for). Then when we asked about a refund they told me I would have to talk to the place I dropped it off.
When we dropped it off they told us that customer service would have to do it. What a joke. Customer service said that they would but never did. When I called them back they said it was never promised and I got all I was going to. They were so rude and unprofessional. I will never go back to them and I were you I would avoid them like the plague. There is a lot more. This is the shorter version. Otherwise you would be reading a novel.

My recent experience with Avis was nothing short of a nightmare, marked by a complete lack of service, transparency, and accountability. I had prepaid for a Premium 7-passenger vehicle for pickup on July 25th. However, upon arrival, I was informed that no vehicle meeting my needs was available. Despite having prepaid, I was forced to accept a downgraded car that was dirty and no immediate option for a refund. I was told I would have to contact customer service after returning the vehicle. This was the beginning of a frustrating and utterly useless cycle.
Upon returning home, I called their customer service number, only to be told that a refund could not be processed until the car was returned. After returning the car on a Sunday evening, I called first thing Monday morning, expecting a resolution. Instead, I was told to wait yet another day. On Tuesday morning, after calling back, the representatives were completely unhelpful, claiming they would "escalate" my refund request to another department. My repeated requests to speak with a supervisor were ignored, and I was never connected to one.
This entire ordeal has been an exercise in frustration and a blatant disregard for customer satisfaction. 2) I was rushed off from the pickup location without someone going over car. I noticed many damages to parts and pieces, missing pieces from car as well.
3) Day 1: I ended up with a flat tire 75 miles away from my destination. We put the donut on the car. Customer service directed us to roadside. Roadside sent me to the nearest Avis (45min away from where I was to replace the car). Proceeded there while on the call, received text communication that a vehicle was waiting for us, got there and location agent stated they were closing and that they did not have a single car available that we never should have been sent there. Customer service hours were over by that point and roadside said there was nothing we could do, we had to contact them again in the morning.
Day 2: Roadside person sent to info of locations to go to replace the tire. None of the locations provided tire repair. The one place I found that did (on my own) stated it would take 2-3 days to repair the issue. Called CS back -they sent me back to roadside assistance agents of whom “confirmed and promised” location had replacement car available - got there- no vehicles available- again. At this point almost 200 miles driven on donut tire following their instruction. 4 hours of being pushed back and forth between roadside and customer service. Finally told nothing could be done. Except for me to pick up a vehicle 150 miles away from where I was.
I'm stuck away on what’s suppose to be a vacation dealing with a nightmare of a situation for over 2 days. We can’t go anywhere we intended and I don’t know how we are getting home.

Reservation created on July 11, 2025, payment posted on July 12, 2025. Reservation had been made around 1:30-2pm in the afternoon of July 11, 2025. Reservation was to be picked up within the hour at the Capital Ave SW, Battle Creek, MI 49017. After hanging up from creating this reservation, I was on the phone trying to find transportation to get to the pickup location. No phone calls/voicemails came in at this time or any time after.
When I realized I wouldn't be able to pick the rental car up within the hour due to no transportation, I called the Battle Creek, Mi location back to let them know. The woman at this location who answered my call, was very rude. She claimed that she called me and left a message; to inform me they had no rentals available. I had asked why they took my payment then, when I hadn't even had the chance to get there to pick up my rental, nor did I get a phone call/voicemail informing me there were no rentals available. She just tells me I need to call the number and ask for a refund due to no rentals available.
I call for the refund. Woman tells me 5-7 business days, the amount of $137.35 would be refunded back into my bank account. I wait the 5-7 business days. July 22, 2025, was the 7th business day. I call them back when I noticed the money had not been refunded yet. They tell me I have to wait until the end of the day, then call back on the next day, July 23, 2025.
I called back on July 23, 2025, only to be told they could not find the reservation, or a cancellation or anything with my name on it. I tell her it was prepaid etc...She finally finds the information she sought, only to tell me I now have to wait another 3-7 business days for my refund. Budget Rentals are Affiliated with Avis, for those of you who did not know this. Two weeks prior to this reservation, I tried to get another reservation, only to be told there are no rentals available. They took payment up front at that time as well, and I had to fight to get the payment refunded, although not quite as bad as this time around.
This is ridiculous, how can they be allowed to take your money before you've even gotten to the location to even pick up your rental car? Even Enterprise don't do that. They don't take any payments until they are handing you the keys. They do charge a deposit, which gets returned to you once you have returned your rental. But they do not take any money until they are handing you the keys, and you've agreed to their agreements/policies, etc... I will NEVER reserve a rental from this company again.

Extremely Disappointed with Avis Rental Experience. I recently rented a premium luxury SUV from Avis—expecting a vehicle in the class of a Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, or Grand Wagoneer. When I arrived for pickup (on time), I was directed to a Honda Ridgeline instead. This was not the class of vehicle I reserved or paid for. I was told nothing in the premium class was available.
Only after I started calling around to other rental companies did an Escalade “suddenly” become available at the same location—about 30 minutes later. I accepted it and continued on a 600-mile drive. That’s when the real problems began. Both GPS and adaptive cruise control—two major features I needed and expected in a premium rental—were not working. I tried troubleshooting myself, only to learn it was a mechanical issue that needed dealer service. I called Avis the next morning, and they told me to go to a local branch for a vehicle swap—but they couldn’t tell me which branches had a comparable car in stock. I visited two locations, including Reagan International Airport, with no success.
I ended up stuck using a defective vehicle for my entire trip—without GPS or cruise control, and after paying a premium price specifically to avoid problems like this. I explained everything upon return and was told a manager would follow up and adjust the bill. That never happened. Avis failed at every step: Gave me the wrong vehicle. Delivered a broken one after I insisted. Couldn’t offer a replacement. Still hasn’t resolved or refunded anything. Absolutely unacceptable. I’ve rented with many companies before, and this was the most frustrating experience I’ve had.

Verified 7/20/2025. First this is NOT a 1 for review, it IS Negative number Review! I've been planning a trip for the past several weeks reserving a 15-seater passenger van over 3 weeks ago for everyone to travel together out of state to a family reunion/celebration of life service for my father! Been calling every week to confirm the reservation and last week, I called the pickup location and found out that there are NO 12 or 15 passenger vehicles available and some SUVs on recall as well! The man at the pickup location I spoke to assured me that he alerted his manager and was told that he'd call me back the next day with more information. I ended up calling him the next day and was told that he spoke with his manager and that his manager was working on a comparable solution (renting 2 SUVs for price of the 15 passenger van).
My reservation in their database was still showing my reservation was okay but in all actuality was not possible at the local rental location! So when I called today (he did not call me) he did not answer the phone so all calls were routed to the Avis/Budget system. I tried several times until the closing time! He never in this whole ordeal call me as he said he would and after 3 days of being played around and lied to he never called or answered the phone. Tomorrow was the day of pickup and now left hanging with all plans made out of state for my family impossible to make/attend! Reunion/celebration of life date was set 6 months ago.
I see that a person (Shelly) only 3 days ago has the basic SAME Complaint that I do only she is from N.Y. Her experience is the same as mine. How can such rentals be even made and the vehicle confirmed- yes I know they can substitute it but in my situation with renting a 15-passenger van, a 12-person van was not even available! Then to be told of a solution and then just be put off another day and be ghosted is extremely terrible!! plans are ruined completely with deposits, reservations, everything ruined because we don't have transportation!! Someone would be there because they watch the reservations flight number to make sure that their customer receive their rental. I arrived at CVG Avis counter before 1:00 am on July 7th. Closed. I proceeded to the floor with the rentals. Notice my name was on the board but no spot was beside my name, so no car. I planned a trip, reserving a 12-seater passenger van for everyone to travel together. A few days before the trip I got an unintelligible voicemail that sounded like there might be a problem. I tried multiple times to return the call, always getting routed straight to the call center, spending several minutes telling the horrid phonebot that I want English, want to confirm a reservation, etc, then waiting on hold for nearly an hour, then speaking to an utterly unempowered person who assured me my reservation is fine but their database doesn't sync with the local database so they can't see for sure that the car I reserved actually exists in New York but it must be fine and no, her supervisor won't know any more and is unavailable.
I eventually gave up and drove to Avis to check. The agent at the desk looked up my reservation and said it was fine, the car would be there. There were heavy duty commercially produced plastic signs on the counter saying that Ford Transit Vans were all recalled and unavailable. I asked about that. She said she didn't know if there would actually be any 12-seater vehicles. When pressed, she hunted down an email address for her manager. He did kindly return my email to tell me the day before the trip that they had no 12-seaters and would be offering me a vehicle instead that seats 7. They charged me double the amount on the receipt they gave me when I returned the car. When I asked about the charges, I got lie after lie after lie. After 4 days of documenting all of the lies and proving them wrong via emails, voice recording, receipts, etc., AVIS doubled down and stuck to their lies. They are a disgusting company that values money over people. DO NOT USE THEM!

“Engine Oil Low – 0 miles.”
We immediately contacted Roadside Assistance. The representative told us to drive 2 hours back to Seattle — with no oil, which could have caused serious engine failure or even an accident. Then we were told to just “take an Uber.” We waited nearly an hour for someone to take the situation seriously. When the technician finally arrived, he confirmed that this was a clear maintenance failure — and said he couldn’t believe a company would hand over such a dangerous vehicle. My wife and I have used Avis for over 5 years, but after this, we no longer trust your brand, and I will not recommend Avis to anyone. To make matters worse, we are recovering from a recent pregnancy loss — this vacation was supposed to help us heal, not leave us stranded and scared on the side of the road.

I rented a car on Sunday July 6th 2025 through Avis at the Louisville airport at 1pm. When I got done in the airport I made my way down to the garages where the cars are kept. The car was not clean at all inside. I was so tired I didn't want to make my way back up through the airport, back to the counter to go and complain. I should have. It was supposed to be $267.22 plus a $200.00 security deposit. I left Louisville at 5pm on Sunday and arrived in Ocala Florida at 7am on Monday July 7th. I then vacuumed the car due to how dirty it already was. Then took it to the Ocala airport to drop it off at 11am.
I was told there were "No problems, and my security deposit will be refunded back to my card in 2-3 days." Next on Monday evening the $467.22 was refunded back to my card and the $267.22 was charged for the rental. Other than them spelling my name as Mighty on the rental agreement and not Michael, there were no issues up to this point. I thought, all is well.
Then on Tuesday they charged me $827.22. The number to call on my rental agreement just rang and rang and rang then was disconnected. I finally got online to find Avis customer service. They told me there was a $450 cleaning fee, a "Road Safety Fee" in Colorado, and a few other nonsensical fees. I was never even IN Colorado. I went from Kentucky to Florida. I had the car for 23 hours total. They are a scam. Now a fraud report has been opened and could take up to 90 days to solve. By then my credit card will be sent to collections unless I pay the $827. I would not recommend Avis to anyone that you care about.

If I would have read these reviews prior to renting through AVIS I would not have went through it. June 20th - prepaid for a luxury car. Found out I couldn’t. They gave me something lesser but I was still charged the luxury car price. Second - asked if I wanted their insurance. I said no because my car insurance covers rentals. Avis still charged me. 3rd - told them I would refuel the vehicle but come to find out after contacting customer service about my money I found out they charged for that too. I will NEVER EVER deal with AVIS again. They were absolutely disappointing and disgusting in their business practices.

Absolutely crap experience. Picked up rental at 11pm after landing and was given a vehicle with steering column damage that was clearly from a prior accident. Safety alert was flashing on console and wheel had to be held at 45-degree angle just to drive straight. Nearly impossible to control and extremely dangerous, especially discovering this after leaving the garage at midnight. Roadside assistance were very nice, would've taken 2 hours or required driving the unsafe vehicle back to airport.
Despite being only 6 miles away at hotel, the car was too dangerous to drive back, the ride leaving the airport had been scary enough. Spent 5 hours the next morning getting a replacement. The "new" vehicle also had accident damage plus interior covered in greasy smears and crumbs, which was pretty gross. There was also something like dried milk on the interior of the windshield. Was upsold toll pass during pickup without being told the cost - just rushed through signing while employee glossed over charges and questions.
Customer service was abysmal. Despite text saying "DO NOT WAIT IN LINE," an employee across the service area from the window I was at started yelling at me for asking directions to correct counter, accusing me of cutting the line. I explained the situation again, even though she was not the one helping me, and she continued fussing at me, and then complaining loudly about needing lunch break. When I made it to the front of the line, she interfered with my transaction again, insisting I file an accident report. I had to calmly explain again that I wasn't in an accident. The return experience equally terrible - employee ignored me for 3+ minutes despite being the only customer in line and then acted annoyed answering basic questions. This location epitomizes everything wrong with rental car service. Unsafe vehicles, predatory upcharge practices, hostile staff. Will never rent from Avis again and strongly recommend avoiding them entirely.

Avis and its affiliated companies are the absolute worst! This is my first and last time using them. I’m writing this review as a warning to anyone who’s renting a car from them. Be extra vigilant and avoid falling for their trap. They’re not professional at all. I rented a car for a one-way trip from Albany, New York to Houston, Texas. The car was returned in clean condition, just like it was when I picked it up. But guess what? Days later, I got a letter saying my card would be charged a cleaning fee of $450!
When I called customer service, they said the car was covered in dog hair, but they couldn’t show me any proof. The work equipment transported didn’t have any dog hair on it, and there wasn’t even a dog in the car. I had to persuade them to send me pictures, and they sent me some that clearly showed fibers, and they didn’t look like dog hairs.
At the time of checkout, no one checked the car with me or told me there would be a cleaning fee. You can look at the pictures yourself. They’re insisting that the car needed to be detailed and that the cost is $450. That’s ridiculous! They don’t have any proof that the car was dirty enough to need a detailed cleaning. It’s just their way of trying to make money. This is the risk you take by using Avis. Be extra careful when you pick up the car and during the return. Demand that an employee be present. If you can’t trust Avis, book through a trusted company like National or Enterprise. I’ve never had an issue with them!

Horrible experience with Avis (via Costco Travel) — unprofessional and unacceptable. We booked a 7-seater SUV through Costco Travel, fulfilled by Avis (Confirmation #**), and this turned out to be one of the worst rental experiences we’ve ever had. When we arrived, Avis didn’t have the vehicle we reserved. A staff member went over to Budget (in the same building) to check if they had any cars available and came back saying they didn’t. However, we showed him on Budget’s website that two vehicles were showing as available at that exact location. Despite that, we were eventually given a car in horrible condition.
The vehicle smelled strongly of cigarettes or possibly worse, was visibly dirty inside and out, full of dents, chips, and scratches, and the passenger seat was broken, completely unsafe and unacceptable. It was obvious the car had not been cleaned or inspected at all. The customer service experience was equally disappointing. At the Budget counter, two female employees were loudly discussing their personal problems, ignoring customers. One turned her chair away from us, and the other was eating a snack while interacting with us. When I asked why the car wasn’t ready, one of them slammed her hand on the desk and snapped, “It’s not us!” clearly irritated that we interrupted their conversation.
We were then told to “ask Enterprise,” and even mocked about traffic, being told we wouldn’t get to our destination on time anyway. The manager never showed up or returned any calls. Only one male employee made any effort to help, but the overall service was shockingly unprofessional. We booked with Avis via Costco Travel expecting a clean vehicle and reliable customer service, but received the opposite. We won’t be returning to this location and are strongly reconsidering using Avis in the future.

Updated on 08/25/2025: This is an update from my prior review. It's now been 2.5 months and we've not yet received a reimbursement for the difference between the 12-passenger van that we pre-paid for (which we were told on arrival to the rental counter was never available at that site) and the 8-passenger vehicle that we had to rent instead. There have been many, many emails between me and customer service. An email about a month ago told me what the cost should have been and said that we would receive a reimbursement in 3-5 business days (which is what they said at the rental counter). Of, the reimbursement was never sent. The most recent emails first said that the cost would actually be a lot more because of added charges, but still no mention of sending us the difference.
Today's email said that they needed the receipt showing the cost breakdown for the original 12-passenger van rental as if they would not already have this information. I'm able to get a "receipt" from their website, but it of course doesn't give a cost breakdown. I'm guessing that I can call the company and request the full receipt, and then send it back to them via the Customer Service team, but I've yet to do that.
Original Review: We rented a 12 passenger van for a family trip and paid online. When we arrived at the rental counter the line was large, and many people had been waiting for close to an hour because there were no sedans available, though these people had also reserved a vehicle beforehand on-line. When we finally reached the front of the line we were told that there was no 12 passenger van; that the website was incorrect. They had an 8 passenger SUV to give us, but this led to our family needing to get two rental vehicles which was inconvenient. The Avis employee told us that we would be reimbursed for the difference in price between the 2 vehicles, but that it would take 5-7 days to receive that. It's been 9 business days and we've not been reimbursed.
When I emailed Avis about the issue they indicate that they need more documentation from me before they can review this further. It's amazing that their computer system is first unaware that there is no van, and now cannot identify our payment via credit card for $1200. What is even more annoying is that we had reserved the 12 passenger van in another nearby town months earlier, we called to ensure that everything was set a few days before the trip and were assured that all was fine, only to be called the day before the trip to say that a van was not available. The original price was $950, so we paid more to still NOT get a van. If National Rental Car had had a van available, I never would have rented from Avis.

We live in MI, but we went down to visit my in-laws in FL. We like to rent a van because it gives the kids more room for a long drive. To start, we had an issue because they told us they didn’t have a van for us, but then they did, it just needed to be cleaned, and we were told the oil was low. This was all fine, because we left with what we rented, it was just more of a headache than it needed to be. Then we head down to FL. While there we experienced an unexpected family emergency involving my husband’s disabled father. For this reason, my husband needed to stay down there to help him.
Our original plan was for me to drive all the way back to Michigan with the kids myself, but neither of us liked that idea. It felt dangerous and unsafe. We talked about the kids and I flying back, the only issue was returning the van. My husband called the Avis customer service and asked if we could turn in the van in FL. The gentleman he talked to was very nice and apologetic about our situation, and just yes, “Yes, it's no problem.” That’s all he said like this was common and not that big of a deal. Relieved the kids and I booked flights and headed home. When my husband went to return the van, he was told there would be a $750 fee. What???? That cost more than the whole week’s rental!! Had we known there would be a fee, we would have drove it up ourselves.
To not be told there would be a fee, let alone a $750 fee is unacceptable!! We based our plans on what we were told when we called customer service. So now my husband is stuck extending the van until he can come home. We reached out to customer service and it was like they didn't even understand my email. Never again will we go thru Avis.

I had booked a compact car with Avis at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in NYC. However, my flight was delayed and then diverted to JFK Airport, landing after 1:30am. My wife called Avis/LGA and the agent said Avis would transfer the reservation to Avis/JFK – all details (type of car, cost, days/hours needed) would remain the same. Avis looked like heroes!
However, at the JFK desk, the Avis agent said that the cost will increase because they viewed it as a new booking, rather than a transferred one. Then she said the price will increase a second time because the LGA agent had typed “2pm” instead of “2am.” I pointed out that that was an Avis mistake, not mine, but she responded “it was Avis/LGA’s mistake, not Avis/JFK’s.” Finally, she informed me that there were no autos available at the JFK location, only mini-vans. When I pointed out that the original reservation and the “transferred” reservation clearly showed I am renting a compact car, she explained that that disappeared when she changed the am/pm time. Having no other option, I accepted the mini-van, and the changes forced upon my booking increased the price by $178 (+43% !).
I later complained to Avis about the increases, but they responded that the extra $178 was to pay for the extra 2 hours, since I had the car for 3 days/2 hours. When I pointed out that the original booking was for 3 hours/4 hours, so I actually brought the vehicle back 2 hours earlier than agreed upon. Avis has now ghosted me.

I had one of the most frustrating customer service experiences ever with Avis. I rented a car from their Orlando Airport location, and they gave me a vehicle with an expired toll tag. As a result, the car was towed by authorities and I was left without transportation for two full days. I had to cover extra transportation costs myself and missed planned activities with my family. After many emails and phone calls, Avis admitted the mistake and eventually issued a partial refund as compensation for the inconvenience. That issue was supposed to be resolved.
The real problem is that Avis still has not returned my $250 deposit. Instead of processing the refund, they started pointing to unrelated charges including one for $135 for services I never requested. During a phone call with customer service, they admitted this charge was made in error and promised to refund it. That never happened. Now they claim that my deposit was used to cover that charge, which is completely unacceptable. You cannot use someone’s deposit to cover a charge your team already acknowledged was incorrect.
Every time I contact Avis, I receive vague or recycled responses that avoid the actual issue. They continue to group together unrelated refunds or charges in an attempt to close the case, but the fact remains that I have never received a single cent of my $250 deposit back. This has been an exhausting experience. I will never rent from Avis again, and I encourage others to be extremely cautious. If something goes wrong with your rental, don’t expect the company to take responsibility.

All I received was a copy of the rental agreement, which does nothing to resolve the actual problem. No updates, no accountability, and definitely no refund. Avis’s customer support is useless once they’ve taken your money. The delay is unacceptable, and their lack of follow-through shows how little they value their customers—especially those renting internationally. If you’re considering renting from Avis, don’t. I picked up a rental from the York, PA location, and while I did a walkaround with the employee to check for dents or scratches, I never thought to inspect the tires—something I will always do from now on.
To start, the car was given to me on an empty tank, which was already frustrating. But what’s worse is what I discovered during a stop in Philadelphia: the right front tire was completely bald, with the metal threads showing. Not only was this a safety hazard, but it also put my life, my son’s, and my brother’s at serious risk. To make matters worse, there was no spare tire in the trunk.
I called Avis immediately and was provided with an Uber voucher to get to another location for a replacement vehicle. I appreciated the quick response, but the chaos didn’t end there. Once I arrived at the new location, I was told I’d be receiving a Kia Forte. After waiting 30 minutes, I was told they couldn’t find the car. I was then told I’d be getting a Toyota Camry, only to watch that car be handed off to another customer after another 15-minute wait.
At this point, I asked to speak to a manager, and the solution? They gave me a Ford Fusion with a check engine light on. Absolutely unbelievable. I had an extremely disappointing experience with RubyCar by Avis when trying to purchase a Jeep on May 23, 2025. Their unprofessionalism, lack of communication, and shady pricing practices have left me warning others to avoid this company. I contacted a salesperson on Friday, May 23, to discuss a Jeep I was interested in. I raised concerns about the price increasing every two weeks since April and requested to speak with a finance manager before proceeding with my $9,000 down payment. The salesperson promised a colleague would call me back but left early that day. I texted their service, clearly stating I wanted to move forward but needed to confirm the price with a finance manager. No one called me back that day.
On Saturday, May 24, I called again and was transferred to a finance representative, Angela, because the original salesperson and finance supervisor were off for the weekend. When I asked Angela about the price increases and her supervisor’s contact, she abruptly hung up on me. After the Memorial Day holiday, on Tuesday, May 27, I finally received a call—not from the promised finance supervisor but from another finance manager. He refused to discuss the price increases and informed me the Jeep’s price had jumped $1,222 since Friday, despite my documented intent via texts and emails to purchase at the original price. RubyCar refused to honor the quoted price, insisting I pay the new amount or walk away.
This bait-and-switch tactic, combined with their dismissive customer service, is unacceptable. I was ready to pay a $9,000 deposit but hesitated due to RubyCar’s poor reputation for delays in returns and registrations—some customers wait up to two months to drive their vehicles. Their refusal to address my concerns or honor the agreed-upon price confirms these red flags. I’ve never been treated so poorly by a business. RubyCar’s practices are deceptive and show they don’t value customers. I strongly recommend choosing a reputable alternative like Carvana or a local dealership to avoid this nightmare.

As a travel nurse, I use a rental car from Avis for 28-29 days every month. On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, I traveled to the Norfolk, VA, international airport. Upon arrival, I attempted to use my complimentary upgrade on my Avis app. Unfortunately, the app would not allow me to select the Toyota Rav4 that populated as a choice for me to select in place of my already assigned vehicle. I arrived at the Avis preferred kiosk after attempting to speak with the person at the counter within the terminal. I was hoping to avoid talking to the employee at the Avis Preferred kiosk because I had already had a negative encounter with one of them on my last trip.
When I walked up to the counter, I informed them that I wanted to use my complimentary upgrade from my email. I explained that I had attempted to use the app to do this but it would not go through. The female at the counter who was rude the previous trip was not waiting on me. The gentleman who was waiting on me stated that I would have to wait to possibly get an upgraded vehicle. I informed him that I did not mind waiting at all and stepped back from the counter.
After stepping back, the female employee that I stated earlier had been rude stated to the male employee, "see you are being to nice to these people" to which he said, "you're just saying that because you are about to go home, I still have to listen to these people tell me what they think they're entitled to." This was clearly heard by myself as well as other customers. He called me back up to the desk and stated that he put me in a Dodge Hornet. I said, "what is that?" He responded that "it is the same class as the Rav4 upgrade that you was wanting" (which was the free complimentary upgrade). The female then also stated "this is the only upgrade you are gonna get. We aren't gonna swap you out for another vehicle." I felt embarrassed by the way the employees spoke to me. I took my keys and left.
A few days later, several of my co-workers were discussing the issues that they have been having during their stays here with this same kiosk. They were discussing being charged for things such as the Sirius radio without agreeing to it as well as fuel costs that they did not incur. I immediately pulled up my account and found that I had been charged an unbelievable $3,217.03 for my rental. I have never paid less than half this amount for 28 days. I contacted customer service and they created a ticket regarding this ordeal. I was told I would have to return the vehicle and receive another car and then they would "look at" removing the extra charges.
As someone who is a servant to the public, I cannot let this encounter go without letting someone within your company know to what degree of unprofessional behavior that I encountered. This experience has been extremely upsetting to me personally as well as the fact that I have had to revisit this because of the nature to which they failed me as the customer. Because of their indifference to their position and what I consider a personal attack on myself as the customer, I am being forced to return a vehicle so that their incompetence can be corrected. I feel like that is giving them more credit than they deserve because I truly feel like this infraction was made willingly and with malice of intent by your employee.
I am having to make up for their lack of professionalism and personal respect for their own position. Simply because I made a request to use my complimentary upgrade that I consistently receive from Avis per email and have never used in the past, I am now being forced to jump through hoops and return my vehicle only to re-rent the same vehicle in order to be charged the correct charges for this rental. I spent an hour typing this to send earlier to create a ticket for this and it was deleted apparently due to the amount of time it took me to type the information. I sat here and typed it all out again because I want my concerns to be heard. This type of behavior should not be tolerated. And, your patrons should not be targets of their cruel and unprofessional attitudes. I will continue to use Avis because this is a "once in a blue moon" experience. I just pray no one else gets hurt by them who won't speak up for themselves.

Called Avis Roadside service for advice as I was an two hours roundtrip from the nearest Avis rental place - they advised returning the car to an Avis rental place for a trade out with another equivalent car.
I called the nearest Avis rental place - first agent told me they had 3 Expeditions on the lot but couldn't tell me if they were already taken - advised me to call back in an hour when a more knowledgeable coworker would come in. When I called back, the second agent told me he could not tell me if they had an equivalent rental available on the lot, and even if they did he said they could not hold it, and advised I drive in although there would be no guarantees they could help me. I chose to take my chances and bought a tire inflator and refilled the tire daily and told them they had lousy customer service (they rent me a defective car that they did not adequately inspect and could not tell me if they had a substitute car for me on the lot, and even if they did they would not hold it for me!) (I could have changed the leaking tire with the spare but then would not have a functional spare on my anticipated long trip if I developed a flat.)
At the start of 5 days of rain I found the rear window wiper was nonfunctional - the rubber insert was old and falling apart and was just hanging there unattached and it was metal on glass when I first activated it. The driver's side front wiper was missing 1/3 of the old wiper blade and was making a noise as a result. Obviously they did not check out this car prior to renting it out. My first and last time renting from Avis.

This place just sucks. Had a car reserved for 6pm which we discovered upon arrival that they close at 6pm and would not answer their phone or door despite arriving a few minutes early. We then proceed to pick up the reservation the next morning before 9am and they informed us that they don't have any cars to fulfill our reservation and would have to pay a significant fee to get a much larger vehicle instead. The manager was rude, unapologetic, and argumentative.
Avis Livonia is terrible and probably the worst location to ever rent a car at. How can we have a reserved car and then that car doesn't exist? Pathetic. Close down to make room for better businesses to take your place. You do nothing for your customers and community. Waste of time and money. Their driveway is also run down and filled with moving trucks that go nowhere. Maybe have more vehicles that can be rented by non-commercial customers? Clearly this place is run by a complete dunce.

My family rented a car from this Avis location. We are Avis preferred customers. Upon receiving the vehicle it was inspected. No dirt or smell of smoke. It was clean. Upon returning the vehicle, we encountered a very rude employee as we were having issues checking the vehicle in via the Avis app. I received an email a few day later with a bill for detailing in the amount of $450. I politely emailed the company asking for proof of the car's condition upon return because we returned the vehicle the way we received it. Clean and fully tanked.
My family is a family of non smokers but the company states the car had a smoke smell (excessive). My partner and I have never purchased cigarettes or whatever the supposed ashes could have come from. The images sent to us was a complete fabrication and a lie. We are in contact with a lawyer that can help dispute these outrageous allegations. The more research I conduct we notice this is not the first time this company has done this to their customers! It is a shame that multimillion dollar companies are taking advantage of innocent people with falsified claims and documentation. We will no longer use their services in the future. I would rate this location/company 0 stars but that is not an option!

April 29, 2025: We rented a Malibu car from Avis in Nashville, TN, for one way to Mammoth Cave and the Ark Experience in KY and ending in Cincinnati, OH. This car was a nightmare. It had ~ 65,000 miles on it. The rear tire(s) were horrendously loud; the decibel rating inside the car at highway speed was between 84 and 94 decibels (hearing-damaging level). I know because I downloaded an app to confirm and also recorded it. The car smelled like an animal had nested in it. It really looked, handled, and SMELLED like a car I would have rented from Rent-A-Wreck (sorry, RAW). It was dirty inside and out (the radio screen was filmed over w/ crud). The remote failed repeatedly (locking us out), and the right mirror was wobbly. We could not afford the time to contact Avis to procure a better car, so we suffered through it the entire trip.
On the day we were driving to the airport in Cincinnati to leave and return the wreck, we had a flat tire ten miles from the airport. We attempted to utilize the Avis roadside assistance, but we were told that the wait would be 80 minutes. We could not wait as we had a plane to catch. We went online and cancelled the roadside assistance request (online) and I changed the tire myself and we limped to the airport. Now they want to charge us for the roadside assistance we did not use. This car was garbage and should have been retired long ago. To add insult to injury, we needed a one-way rental to home from Charlotte, NC airport due to flight cancellations (we elected to drive 5 hours to home versus remaining in Charlotte overnight). Avis apparently doesn't like to rent one-way cars at Charlotte, so they refused to rent one to us. We finally got one from Enterprise (thank you!).

Everyone I have talked to has said there is nothing that can be done. $250/ day for the car was a lot I thought, now it's over $500 for one day. This website does not allow 'zero' stars, please note that. I had a HORRIBLE experience with Avis car rental. I was traveling alone, I made a reservation in which I paid $452 upfront. I was in the area for one week. I want to say that I did not think to look up the Avis on BBB prior to making the reservation because we had used them in August 2024 and had no issues at that time. Avis was not going for a repeat performance this time.
When I picked up the car in the evening (after 11:00PM) it smelled like someone dumped an ashtray in the car and the steering wheel was sticky but too late I was already in the car. I called them Monday to report my smelly concerns and they claimed they would take 20% off, it was the best they could do. Was it? When I dropped off the car a week later at 5:30am, I returned the car to the same section in the airport parking lot where I picked it up but all the 'AVIS' spots were occupied so I parked it in the same area around 20 feet away. There were two men standing there and one had an 'AVIS' uniform on. He said "Are you returning your car?" I said "Yes" and he said "I'll take the key" OMG... Did I take a picture or get a receipt? NO. I learned my lesson through this experience. I had to get to my flight so I was in a hurry and trusted these people.
Next thing I know I get a certified letter AND an email (which they charged me $60 for) a DEMAND FOR RETURN OF OVERDUE VEHICLE. What overdue vehicle? I called and the customer service people said no one in Pittsburgh had 'closed the account' and that's why I got the letter. I returned the car on March 28th and got a text from them Tuesday April 29th. It took the 37 DAYS to find the car? Guess what they think they are ENTITLED to ALL of the money they charged me after terrorizing me about a missing car that was never missing. Turns out there were OTHER charges that are NOT listed in taxable services section. Last time I use AVIS. Stay FAR way from them.

He said I would be emailed a receipt. I wasn't, but I was overcharged $16.84. Avis is a bunch of thieves. I emailed their customer service. This day was a weekday so think the company is sacrificing customer service for profit. I processed my reservation and was given the key and directed to the second or third floor to pick up the car. I got the car and drove from the Fort Lauderdale Brightline Station, Avis's location and drove to my destination outside of Fort Lauderdale. At no time while the car was in my possession did, I park anywhere that could incur parking tickets. About 2 months after the rental date, I received a letter in the mail from Avis for parking violation for the car I rented, on the street at the Avis location twenty minutes after the pickup time on my reservation. That's impossible because at no time did I park on any street in Fort Lauderdale.

You reserve a car, prepay for the car, you get there and they don’t have your car!! It’s such a mess, no apologies, simply attitudes! Forget calling customer service, they get them from overseas so you get what you paid for basically! No one cares, supervisors don’t call you back until 2 weeks later..
Avis has become a total joke, they overcharge for things and then justifies their actions. Thank goodness I found another wonderful car rental place who cares and take care of their customers . It’s sad to say that after being a loyal customer for 10 years, I will NEVER recommend them to anyone at this point! I reserved a car for $425. When I picked up the car, I declined the insurance and was not told that the toll "package" was unlimited tolls - it was explained to me that the toll charges would be added to my bill. When I turned the car in, I was charged $779, for insurance and a toll "package". I spoke with four CSRs, who gave me varying offers for refund which were not sufficient. One CSR even gave me the number of the "corporate" office, which was the call center. The last CSR I spoke to gave me the lowest amount of refund, and said that she didn't know who gave me a higher offer.
None of the CSRs would elevate this to their supervisors. I estimate that I spent $3.25 going through the Ted Williams tunnel (the charge for off-peak without an EZ-pass), and that is the amount I should pay. I was shocked at the customer service I received from the call center. I have never had an issue before with Avis and wonder what has happened to Avis. We reserved a car online using Priceline. When we arrived at the Avis location rental counter in Springfield, Missouri 1210 W Sunshine St, we were informed that because I had an out of state drivers license I had to have a second form of government issued ID to receive the car. I did not have this, and could not get it because I had just flown in. Priceline did not notify us of this, and we never received any communication from the location saying this would be required. We were now stuck in a city that was an hour drive from our vacation spot with no transportation and all other locations were out of vehicles. When we called the main Avis hotline for support, we were told that because the Springfield location was an "independently" operated facility they could make up their own rules and there was nothing Avis could do. Avis also made not effort to make things right and help us find a new rental car.
Additionally, Priceline made no effort to help us. On Avis' website it says "OUR ONLY PLAN IS TO MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOURS." They did not live up to this in any way. This location apparently has this problem so often, they have a 50" TV in the office saying "If we can't validate your credentials we cannot rent you a car". This location should be contacting everyone who makes a reservation, they should lose their Avis credentials, be removed from Priceline, a combination of those, or all 3. I will NEVER rent from Avis again. Up until now, they have been my go to agency.

I had a terrible experience with Avis Car Rental at the Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Airport. After returning my rental vehicle, the agent who inspected the car told me everything looked good and that I was free to go. There was no mention of any damage or issues at the time of return. However, two weeks later, I received a bill claiming there was damage to two of the tires. This came completely out of the blue, long after the car had been returned and cleared. When I contacted Avis to dispute the charges, they told me they do not have to inspect vehicles upon return and are within their rights to bill customers later for damages. This is completely unacceptable.
Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue, Avis has refused to correct the matter or even provide clear evidence of when or how the alleged damage occurred. Their unwillingness to take responsibility for their own return process and their predatory billing practices are deeply concerning. I strongly discourage anyone from renting with Avis at BWI. This time on March 6th 2025, I reserved a large SUV which ended up being a Ford Explorer which was quite nice, BUT I noticed there was a crack in the windshield at the lower driver's corner so I showed the attendant that crack. It seemed to be about 8 inches or so long and I was concerned that this was not recorded and might cause me to be charged when I had nothing to do with it. The attendant took a photo and encouraged me to do the same which I did. My phone camera recorded the date/time so I could have proof. Sure enough about a month later, I received a note in the postal mail that I'm being charged over $600 for this crack.
I went back to the rental location to the same manager that I showed the crack to and she remembered me and said that she would send in a note to corporate. I called Avis at their 800 number and reported it as well, but the agent on the phone acted as if she didn't fully understand and while on hold to check with her records and manager, came back to say the charge was valid. I explained again, and they sent me an email with a link to a page to send my concern in. A few days later, I received an apology for my rental experience and that was all. No credit was given, so the charge stands on my credit card. I will dispute that charge and take this further if needed. BEWARE of damages on your rentals that are NOT your responsibility!.

After completing a customer service lost item form, I waited 3 1/2 days until I received a response. Avis customer service indicated that they could not find my item. I took an international flight and booked my rental from EWR airport. I got to the rental counter at 11:44 pm and only person to help on Avis and one for Budget. My reservation was with Budget and after waiting for an almost hour the associate informs me that he can only give me 5 passenger car versus I booked the minivan. I have 6 check in bags and 4 carry on to fill. They offered to provided 12 passenger for additional cost. I had no choice and paid for the extra cost and took the vehicle. I got out of the airport around 1:30 am after picking up my family. We ended up staying in New Jersey overnight and had to drive 12 passenger back home and I didn't feel comfortable driving this big vehicle. I called the customer service and only charged they waived off is the extra charge which was enforced. I don't recommend using this business for future rental as they don't value their customer or their time.

We rented a Chevy Malibu at Savannah (GA) Intl airport Nov 23-30, 2024. Arriving at night, we waited 45 min to see the Avis/Budget clerk, the only one there. It was dark, and we couldn't see that the windshield was cracked at the bottom on the driver's side. The car smelled of smoke & had trash on the seat. In headlights, we could see the crack. In the morning it was very visible. However, we were now 40 miles away and so we didn't drive back and report the damage. No one is there to inspect or receive the returned car. We were then charged $470 for the windshield repair a month later. It appears that they never checked this car after the previous renter turned it in. I sent a letter disputing the charge, but they will deny any refund to us.

As part of my work I travel a lot and that also means I rent a lot. I mostly go with Enterprise/National and never have any major issues. The cars are clean and customer service is satisfactory. However during my last two trips I decided to change things up and try Avis for the first time. They also had an attractive special so I wanted to earn points for that. I rented a car from Toronto to travel to Montreal and back. The moment I entered the Avis rental agency in Brampton, Ontario I was received by a very unprofessional and somewhat rude representative. There was no welcoming atmosphere and I felt rushed.
The car I received was filthy. Smelled bad and it seemed he just hastily wiped it down with some wet wipes before giving it to me as some spots were still wet where he wiped. I was in a rush so accepted the car. I immediately decided I was not going to rent from them again. Two months later I decided to rent again so I can earn points. This time my trip was to California. I rented in Anaheim. Lo and behold, same poor customer service and filthy vehicles. I requested an upgrade and was told they had nothing for me. I had to actually stop at a gas station to buy Lysol wipes to clean the car. So this is where I step off and promise to never go back to Avis or Budget again.

Avis called me 24 hours before my reserved trip to tell me that they are out of minivans. I booked this trip to my parents for Christmas back in September. The "manager" of Avis in Eatontown told me that all surrounding areas had no minivans only SUV's. So, I said "OK" as long as it has three rows and will not charge me the difference since this is not my fault. The rep told me there was nothing and nothing in any surrounding areas except maybe Newark. Which then I replied okay I'll take that and go there. She then told me no, I have to call.
I was so aggravated that I told her that this is ridiculous, how could they not account for this? So I proceeded to call the number she gave me in which I spoke with a rep who was able to find a minivan at Newark. However, he told me he was holding it for me but the price difference was $170 more which I did not budget for. I told him since its not my fault they should price match. He agreed then sent me over to another department in which no one after an hour, never answered. Luckily, I called the number from another phone and received a call back only for them to tell me my reservation was not held and there were no minivans at all. WHAT???
Avis left me with no car for the holidays to get to my family 1000 miles away. Thanks Avis! They were no help and all the manager from the first call said was I'm not going to take this personal as I expressed that I was truly disappointed and angry. Who wouldn't be? No help at all. I will never book with Avis again. I was also told well if I paid I would get my refund. Seriously? You just cancel people's reservations because of a mess up on your end? Unacceptable....You need better policies.

I call their customer service and the representative assured me they show the car was returned on 11/25 and immediately rented back out. I asked for written confirmation as I don't want to be arrested for GRAND THEFT AUTO. I received a signature required letter on 12/7 ... DEMANDING I RETURN THE CAR. I went into the rental agency yesterday and the same guy was there. He could do nothing but laugh and say "don't worry about it". REALLY? 🤬

Waited 40 minutes in line to get it checked out (this was November and it was cold). Finally got the car. Drove it 3 hours, stopped to get a meal. Came out to a flat tire. There was no spare. Called for assistance. They said to use some type of canister to fill the tire. That wouldn't work. It was dark out and Avis was really of no help other than to tell me they were going to tow the car. I got a ride to my destination with a relative and rented a car from another company. A month later, my charge card was charge $1129.40. No notification or explanation. Called their customer support and got nothing. Just someone reading from scripts. I would prefer to write a minus 5 stars review on AVIS. I rented a car in Main more than a month ago. The car was basically parked most of the time, since I was attending a workshop. I returned the car at the Bangor International Airport; nobody was there to receive the car or provide me with a return receipt. Last week, I got a letter saying there was tire damage and that my card was going to be charge an additional $83.00 dollars.
They never provided prove of the damage (photos or video), which make me wonder if this is just a business practice from AVIS to drive more revenue. Nobody checked the car when I returned it, they charged me extra money without proof. I am guessing they do this regularly to many people across the US, so how much extra money they are bringing to their business??? If you want to charge me more, the least you could do is to show me proof of the damage. I'm not happy and will never use AVIS again. I no longer trust them.....and I will challenge the credit card charge. VERY disappointed.

I have been an Avis Preferred member for more than 15 years and always used Avis for my business and leisure needs. Recently I rented a Nissan Rouge from the Portland, Maine airport, driving it 75 miles to attend a reunion. I was alone in the car with a small, hard-sided carry on bag which I placed in the cargo area. 2 days later I returned the car to the airport, not having used the car in between driving to and from the airport. About 2 weeks later I received an email notifying me that I was being charged $250 for cleaning. When challenging this, I was provided pictures of some stains on the back seats (which I never used).
I’m quite certain that the photos were from a prior rental, but since I had no proof, I was charged for the cleaning. Several lessons learned: always take before and after pictures of your rental car; don’t accept a car with high mileage (the one given me had over 45,000), and don’t expect that just because you’ve been a loyal customer that you’ll receive any different treatment. I’ll NEVER use Avis again.

We heard a noise when we drove out of the parking lot but all of the systems were reading okay and we were already late for an event because we had to wait. After about 10 minutes on the freeway, the tire blew out. We had to pull over and replace the tire with a donut. We continued our hour drive. When we got to our location, we called them. They requested we drive the car back but the donut is only rated for 50 miles so we requested someone drop a car off to us. They quoted us 689.00 to bring a car to us.
The next morning they found a car at a location only 25 minutes from us, customer service assured us that they called ahead and they had a car waiting for us and there would be no extra fees. The manager said he never received a call, they did not have the same size vehicle. When we returned the car, they charged us $10. a gallon to fill the tank, they had an extra driver fee and also charged us for the defective tire! I called their customer service, was told that the complaint was being sent to their international customer service and looked at. I never got neither an answer nor my money back from them. As well as that, subsequently I got a paper letter which stated that I was supposed to pay an approximate additional $450 for an alleged accident I had (I didn't), without even sending a picture of said damage.
The letter stated that they would take the money out of the payment info they had on file. I sent a reply paper letter immediately, as there was no email address listed on the letter nor could I find an email address online, not allowing the charge. I still have not heard back from them. I rarely do reviews unless I believe it might really help someone else. I would give a zero rating if I could. Rent with this company at your own risk. If they make a mistake they will not honor it. They will leave you stranded. My brother and I had a reservation to pick up a car at the Alabama Shuttles Worth airport and I called the location 3 x's to make sure we understood everything we needed to know. This was after I called customer service and was given incorrect information. I do not have a driver's license and he does not have a credit card. As a former Avis employee (25 yrs ago) I knew he could rent the car, but things change so I wanted to confirm. (customer service told me I couldn't pay with my card at the end, which I know wasn't true) What I thought was confirmed and I was going to be able to change to my credit card upon return. I was also told that we would need to show proof of flights coming into and out of Birmingham airport.
We thought we were set. When we went to the Avis counter we were refused a car. The agent ran a credit check on my brother's debit card which had $12,000 on it and we were told it failed. (I don't remember a credit check when I worked there but I called anyway to get all the details I needed) If any of the agents that I spoke to during any of the 3 previous calls had mentioned this we would have made other arrangements knowing that this might happen. This was the purpose of the 3 calls. Now we were stranded with no car in a city where we didn't know anyone, we were visiting the resting place of deceased relatives and wrapping up some business.
We called customer service, they didn't care. All other car rental companies were sold out. They had no cars. The Magic City Classic as well as another big event was taking place. I couldn't believe Avis just left us like they did. Lucky for us we explained our plight to Miss V at Hertz and she found us a car. They also ran a credit check and it was successful!!!! The rental cost $150.00 more than my Avis reservation because we had to take a premium car, but I was just glad to get a car. Thank you Miss V at Hertz. Never again Avis, GOOD BYE!!!! (Upon writing this review, I found an article on the Better Business website which stated that in NY where I live, charges have been brought against AVIS in NY for breaking the law by refusing to rent to individuals without credit cards, they have been ordered to pay NY states $275,000 for this violation).

DO NOT TRUST AVIS! I rented a Jeep 4 door from Avis and paid a little extra for it (2 day difference was only like $20 more and since I drive a Jeep and we needed the space it seemed like a good deal). When we got to the counter we were informed that there were no Jeeps and that they could give us a Nissan Rogue. We said we would really prefer something bigger as the Rogue is not as big as the Jeep, but were told that was all they had and that they were in the same class and price. I said that the Rogue is actually in the intermediate SUV class which costs less and she told me I was wrong.
It was 930 at night and we had a 2 hr drive ahead of us, so we took the car and left. I have since been in touch with AVIS who now admits that they are not the same class and the pricing was different. (No kidding: I have looked every day at numerous locations thru Expedia and Avis sites to make sure I am not mistaken and the Rogue is $10-$20 cheaper every day on both sites) but they are trying to claim on that day at that airport that the Rogue was actually $32 more! LOL! Every day, everywhere the Jeep costs more and yet on this one day I got lucky and the Jeep was more? I admitted that I didn't have proof (I certainly could not have known I would need to take screenshots as I never imagined they would lie like this), but come on?
Lying to a customer when every day the website shows a higher price for the Jeep and then trying to cover up their mistakes, lazy employees and their lies? Terrible. I'm disappointed that no one I have spoken to at Avis takes the issue of their employee lying to a customer as serious as I would have expected, but I guess they assume most customers won't take the time and effort to share their story of being scammed. AVIS locations are either owned and operated by the AVIS corporation or they are independently owned and operated as a franchise of the AVIS corporation. The Westfield Mall AVIS location is independently owned and operated and should be your first stop for car rental needs. Even within AVIS's paradigm of corporate and franchised locations this store stands out as exceptional. AVIS corporation hasn’t quite figured out how to cease 3rd party reservations (Priceline, KAYAK, etc) at locations whose inventory runs out and we were allowed by AVIS system to book through Priceline a vehicle at a location with zero available cars.
Upon arriving at the location, we were informed there were no vehicles available at any local AVIS except the Corporate AVIS airport location. Our reservation was amended to pick up at the airport and notes were entered on our reservation to ensure the airport would charge us the price guaranteed by our initial reservation. We diverted to the airport location only to be told that our reservation would not be honored at the price we booked on Priceline because prices are higher at the airport and agents have no mechanism for adjusting prices. We were told we would have to pay double the price we booked on Priceline if we wanted a vehicle. After speaking extensively to customer service the only option we were provided was to pay the full double price and potentially receive a credit after returning the vehicle. This was unacceptable to us, we declined, and we returned to the location were initially booked to pick up.
There we explained our situation to "Jeff" and he was very understanding and recognized that it was important to make sure our initial reservation was honored and we were able to rent a vehicle. He explained that the computer system helps efficiency, but that the people whom represent AVIS have a duty to ensure the consumer is treated fairly, with dignity, and that contracts should be honored. Jeff was able to procure a vehicle and make sure our initial reservation terms were honored, which meant we were not stranded without a vehicle and we did not have to pay double our reservation price. Jeff took it upon himself to not only represent his brand with integrity, but to do it because it was the right thing to do.
We did not cause a scene or raise our voices, we did not have to, because Jeff immediately recognized the injustice in the Airport location dropping the ball and rather than lose a customer AVIS retained a customer. This location is excellent and their actions are exemplary in a time when artificial intelligence is taking over customer service and the few humans that are left are atrocious. Definitely, check this place out for your rental.

My husband, who has nodes on his lungs and was in an accident the day before our trip that caused him to have bruised ribs and swelling on his spine, had breathing irritation that exasperated his lung issue and caused him greater discomfort.
We tried to replace the vehicle many times, and on 2 occasions were treated very unprofessional by employees at the Avis rental sites that we had been sent to by the call in service number. Not once did they show empathy or give us a feasible solution. We feel this should be made right as we paid over $1,000 for the vehicle that brought a negative and even harmful effect on our trip. With no real help from Avis associates.

I rented from Avis IAH (Houston) for the first time and used the car minimally back and forth while I was visiting my family. There was a small amount of pet hair on the floor of one side of the van (as noted by the "damage" report) and I was charged $125 cleaning fee. I was notified of this 3 or 4 days after the car was returned. The amount of hair that was in the car could have easily been lint-rolled up in under 5 minutes. I called to dispute this fee and they refused to help me or even reduce the fee. I would not recommend this location to anyone visiting the area.

Updated on 08/11/2024: Today it's August the 10th 2024 and Avis has not refunded my deposit. I have contacted my credit card company and a dispute on Avis charges. Hate to do it but Avis left me no choice. Never rent from Avis. Renting from Enterprise and Sixt has been a joy always.
Original Review: I rented a car and was told AVIS will put hold onto my credit card in the sum of USD 1500. No problem as that is normal, I thought. I was told within 3 days, after I return my rented car, they will refund me anything over the agreed rental cost. Today it’s 19 days and I see no credit on my credit card.

Note, this happened at the rental agency in Barcelona airport. It took us more than an hour to get the car, and there were only about 4 people ahead of us, some guys were kind enough to let us pass ahead given that we were in a rush. It took this long even though everyone did their-online pre-checkin. When we returned the car instead, the staff basically took the keys and rudely shooed me away, even when I insisted to do the car check with them and that I should sign.
The staff people, given that there was no one else around, could have easily just done the check with me, instead they turned their back to me, pretended that I wasn't there and just said "If you filled the tank then it's fine lady, we'll just take the keys". Of course an hour later, when I was at the gate in the airport, I receive an email that they are charging me 400 euro for damages (a.k.a. a scratch) + out-of-usage costs (i.e. the car needs to sit at the shop 1 day to be repaired so it loses them money).
To top it all off, at the counter when we got the car we switched the first driver to me, the agency took my credit card and then proceeded to charge the second driver's credit card, which they had on file from the booking - EVEN THOUGH THEY TOOK MY CARD AT CHECK-IN AND EVEN CHARGED ME THE DEPOSIT FEE. So now, all the documents have one name on it, and they charged the damages to a credit card with a different name. To this day they have not rectified the error. Without this correction, I cannot claim insurance from my provider. Please, if you must rent from them, do not trust these people as far as you can throw them. Otherwise, just go with another rental agency.

My wife was traveling to Augusta, GA and her flight was severely delayed. I called to let the rental company we had booked with know, and they said they would not be open. So I called Avis and they told me that they would be open, and to guarantee she had a car, I should go online and pre-pay. They assured me that if I pre-paid then the car would be there. She reached the airport, and NO car. And, they refused to give her an immediate refund. They charged her the FULL $315 for the rental AND $300 hold. So $615 on her credit card yet NO car.
She even got an e-mail saying the cancelled rental WAS NOT REFUNDABLE. How is that possible when THEY DIDN'T HAVE A CAR! What about the interest that is going to hit her credit card? On top of all of that, once she arrived, she told me that the guy at the counter was so rude that another basketball family overheard and felt so bad that they offered her a ride. Avis is running a legal scam. A terrible company.

I rented a car from Avis in Tulum TQO- stay away- they made me wait 3 hours for my car, which is completely unacceptable. Once car arrived, driver's door doesn’t close properly I legit thought I was in the Flintstones, seatbelts don’t work whatsoever. These are all safety hazards that should be compensated and corrected immediately. No customer should be driving a car with failing safety measures whatsoever and to even wait for a car three hours is beyond unacceptable. Seatbelts not working is an additional safety measure.
I had kids and my family in the car. They did not want to give me another car or even offered. With all this being said, it deserves a compensation to say the least. They quoted me a price of 1800 dollars with receipt and then charge me 2612.00 originally insurance was included In the price reservation, but then at TQO that’s not true - whatsoever you need insurance so called. I've been a loyal customer of Avis and have Avis Preferred status. I received a letter after returning my latest rental to the OAK location that I'd have to pay a $450 cleaning fee for "excessive dirt and sand" with "heavy severity." I rented the car for 11 days and drove it 1,500 miles with 5 people in the vehicle. We took great care to minimize messes in the vehicle. We wiped our feet if there was dirt and didn't eat anything in the car. The rental was in the San Francisco area which is known for car break-ins, so we hardly put anything in the vehicle and had nothing visible --- it was completely cleaned of belongings upon return. There was what I consider a normal amount of debris from 5 pairs of shoes going in and out of the vehicle for 11 days, certainly not more than a 5-minute vacuum could take care of. We've vacuumed rentals in the past when we felt they were excessively dirty, but this was not.
I've appealed to Avis through multiple channels and have gotten nowhere, each time with them citing photos of the vehicle that do not show it was excessively dirty. At one point they told me that it's my job to clean the car before returning it. Their terms do not require cleaning, but say you'll pay a "reasonable fee" for cleaning if they determine it's excessively dirty, which was not the case with this rental. I can't trust Avis anymore because I can't roll the dice on whether my next rental will cost $450 extra, and I won't do their job for them to make the car spotless for the next customer after I've paid a full rental fee.

I am dismayed to report that although the cars and service were good, I feel that they attempted to scam me TWICE. At the airport I fell victim to the $23 charge for 1/2 gallon of gas needed to 'top up'. Others have reported the same scam, they seem to think that customers won't challenge the scam. I did, and it was reversed. When picking up my car in the UK the agent pressed me to add my wife to the designated driver. OK, I know that the spouse can drive without paying an additional driver fee. However, to my surprise, when I dropped the car off my credit card was charged an additional $125. Here is the experience during my recent car rental experience with AVIS. I booked my car rental with AVIS (picking up on APR 6, 2024 at Memphis International Airport, TN and returning in Downtown Nashville, TN on APR 9, 2024). Since my flight was arriving late at night, I chose AVIS because its desk is open until 1:30 AM. In order to secure a rental, I paid in advance.
I arrived at the AVIS desk at Memphis International around 11:00 PM, APR 6, 2024. AVIS rep told me that they were overbooked and no car was available. He suggested taking UBER or LIFT for further transportation. He did not provide any explanation why prepaid, i.e. already purchased product/service was given away to someone else. Instead for further questions he gave an AVIS booklet with several 1800 numbers. He also suggested to come back in the morning to check if rental car would be available.
We waited for 40 minutes for the Lift driver and rode 30 miles to my final destination, Cordova, TN. Upon arrival I called the AVIS customer care desk (1800 number) and was told to call back in the morning (8 AM). Representative also suggested filing a complaint online, which I did. I received a couple of standard email messages with suggestions to call back to Customer Service at 1-800 number.
I called in the morning (8:15 AM) again and talked to rep who explained to me that according to inventory 6 cars are available at Memphis International but I must to arrive in person to confirm that. He was not able to contact AVIS at Memphis International since they did not pick up the telephone. I can confirm that. Tried to do it by myself with similar results. As an alternative to avoid coming back to Memphis International, Rick checked out local AVIS inventory in Cordova, TN location. However, this approach was not feasible because this location does not provide one-way rental. Rick could not explain why. He transferred me to another rep named Alex.
Alex told me that he is from the billing department and could not help me with rental, but will provide me with compensation for inconvenience. He said that it will come in the form of an email message with explanations in an hour. He verified my email address and telephone number. Never received such an email message from AVIS. He also refused to transfer me back to customer care. Instead of that he provided a couple 1-800 numbers (1-866-806-3637 and 1-866-5257521). Neither of them worked. This representative was not polite and cooperative at all.
I called back and talked to Tamara who did not provide any assistance at all and transferred me to supervisor per my request. He was very polite and cooperative. He confirmed that to receive one way rental I had to go back to Memphis International. In order to address the issue he suggested transferring me to another group at AVIS. He also offered me to be present at the conference call with them and assist. Never happened. I was transferred to the rep, who told me that no cars were available to me in the entire Memphis metro area. Per my request she transferred me to the supervisor. This person was pretty rude and uncooperative. She confirmed that no cars were available in the inventory and I had two options: go back to Memphis International AVIS location (30 miles from me) and check availability or to receive a full refund and get a car rental somewhere else.
As a "courtesy", she tried to contact the Memphis International AVIS location with no response. I was also provided with reference number. The message was pretty clear: No cars are available for you at AVIS and it is your problem with your further transportation. Per my request to talk with her supervisor I was told that she was supervisor on duty and the highest level of AVIS authority at that time.
After spending almost two and half hours on the telephone with AVIS representatives I decided to go back to Memphis International on my own. I arrived there around 11:00 AM on APR 7, 2024. Just for clarification, I did not use the rental car which I had paid for almost a day and it was not my fault. Noone offered me any compensation. Instead of that I was suggested to take care of my transportation by myself and on my own expenses. Upon arrival I was given a car pretty quickly. Representative at the desk assured me that the car had CarPlay option capabilities for using GPS from my phone. It was very important for safe driving in unknown geographical area.
The booklet indicated the car was parked in space number: D16. It was Hyundai Tucson and had all the capabilities needed. The Exit representative informed me that it was the wrong car and I must drive around the airport to return it. When I arrived, the Toyota Corolla was parked in the D16 car space. This car did not have any CarPlay capabilities which I was promised. With this car I found right after I left the car rental garage that fuel was extremely low and the tank was almost empty. I had to go back and ask for the other car. I was told that I probably have to wait. The third car (Chevrolet Malibu) provided in 15 minutes worked ok. No apologies were provided. I spent two hours at Memphis International AVIS facility. I was happy to leave as soon as possible.
Two days later (AP 9, 2024) at AVIS Nashville downtown drop off went pretty smoothly. However, to my question why the prepaid amount increased for 22 dollars more, the representative did not provide any answer. I was also not offered any courtesy lift to my hotel. Even though it was only a mile away from AVIS. I was under the impression such courtesy is an industry standard for major car rental companies provided in big metro areas. Later on I was contacted by two AVIS representatives. I responded to both with request for investigation. No response was received back.
According to my rental car experience with AVIS, this organization's operations do not work properly, have many gaps, and deficiencies in customer care. Representatives do not care about customer's needs, provided a lot of misdirections and controversial information. The appropriate communication between the central customer care group and AVIS locations are almost absent. AVIS employees I dealt with did not express any empathy to me as a client and did not provide enough efforts to resolve issues I experienced. I spent almost a day trying to get the car which I already paid for, without any compensation. The compensation for my additional transportation costs was not addressed either. Nobody really apologized to me.

Vehicle Rental Experience: A Cautionary Tale
Preamble: A loyal customer with over 1000 rentals and a top-tier membership status, I expected to redeem my 36,000 points for a simple one-way truck rental from Las Vegas to Raleigh.
Objective: Leverage loyalty points for a cost-effective, one-way rental.
Experience: The company’s app malfunctioned, and in-person assistance led to hours of wasted time, conflicting information, and a refusal to honor my points. Customer service (telephone) was a carousel of incompetence, with representatives providing false information, refused to speak with supervisors, and calls ending in hang-ups.
Conclusion: Avis’s disregard for customer loyalty and absence of a complaint department is unacceptable. The final insult was an erroneous charge of $1400 for a service quoted at $850 that was never correctly provided. Avis’s failure to rectify their mistake or offer a genuine resolution is indicative of a systemic issue within their customer service operations.
Final Verdict: Avoid Avis at all costs. Their outsourced customer service lacks empowerment and accountability, leading to a frustrating and fruitless experience. In my case it was a downright illegal theft venture by a well-known company. Test what I say is true, call yourself and ask to speak with a complaint department, not customer service as customer service will not help you if you find yourself in a situation like mine.

But, here’s the kicker – I got hit with a surprise charge claiming there was a smoke smell in the car. The thing is, none of us smoke. We’re all non-smokers, and I can swear there was no smoking during our rental period.
I’ve already reached out to AVIS to dispute the charge and ask for a refund, including the exchange fee, which adds up to $450 + 7 Euros. I’ve asked them to thoroughly investigate and provide evidence if they’re sticking to their claim. I’m pretty frustrated and worried about this unfair charge, and I could really use some advice on how to handle it. Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation with AVIS or any other rental company? Any tips on how to sort this mess out would be a huge help. Thanks a bunch for your support.

Buy their liability insurance or no car. Plus extra this and that. So the $214.45 car rental cost $411.33 with no advance notice whatsoever. I complained to Avis, saying they should provide the actual cost in advance, and all I got was an automatic reply saying I had signed the rental agreement so had no basis to complain. I rented a vehicle from Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR), 44th Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI and was given a Malibu with 82,000 miles, pulled to the left, made concerning engine noises at speed and unbalanced tires that vibrated. Of course you don't find all these things out till you get onto the highway however, the 82,000 miles was a red flag I should have acknowledged. The fact Avis even has a car with this many miles and in this condition is hard to believe. I reported this to the GRR Avis employee and they offered no solution or seemed to care (didn't get recorded anywhere that I complained). When I tried to reconcile this dangerous experience with customer service post rental, I was told I should have reported it (I did but no one cared) and that there was nothing they could do at this point because there was no way to verify this, which is convenient.
There is also no way to report this on the app or website during a rental, also convenient. For customers and inevitably the person this car breaks on or causes a crash to, the plate number is **. When they say no one has complained previously, I hope you or your attorney find this review. It's sad that companies do not value safety or customer experience and would just assume insinuate a customer is lying, and lose a customer (in this case a whole company) over such a small easily fixable issue. I tried to call customer service and got someone in another country I could barely understand that just repeated lines off a sheet. With that being said, domestic CSR was no more caring or helpful. I was also charged for a whole extra day after arriving late by an hour in icy conditions but CSR has made it clear there is no exceptions to this. Would recommend you book for a day extra and bring it back early due to this.
It seems I am not the only person to receive this level of service from this location or Avis CSR / Corporate which is sad. Eventually these will all add up to be a considerable chunk of business but the damage will be done. I tried to speak with every rep I could about this from calling, to Facebook, to WhatsApp links given by other customers (scam?). The end result was all the same. Sorry YOU didn't handle this but AVIS won't help because it was reported... I think things are not reported and made difficult to report on purpose maybe?

Avis has changed a great deal since I became a preferred customer. Preferred no longer means anything and in truth rental contracts really don’t mean much to them either. If you’re traveling through Denver international airport avoid Avis at all costs. The Denver office is extremely disorganized. The Avis branch offices in Denver are incapable of communicating with each other or with customer service. Avis customer service, of course, is incapable of providing any solutions to problems with rentals. My experience: I arrived in Denver at 4:30 PM on February 17, 2024, I pre-paid a rental of an intermediate SUV. I waited over an hour for the shuttle bus along with about 50 other people I got off at the Avis preferred counter as I was told and found my name on the board, but there was no parking space indicated for my car. There were at least 100 people in the preferred line. The temperature outside was about 20°F. I waited for two hours.
In front of me in line, were a gentleman from Washington state and his two children who were freezing in their airport clothes. When I finally got to the counter, I was told to go to a parking space. I went to the parking space and it turned out to be an electric vehicle. I was so glad just to get out of the airport. I drove 7 miles towards the interstate highway and the car notified me that I had less than a 7% charge. I was able to locate a charging station and approximately three hours later I had a 10% charge and was able to make it to my destination around 11 PM. Numerous calls to Avis during that time achieved nothing in terms of assistance, useful advice or commiseration. I don’t know why anyone would ever treat a customer this way.
Subsequent calls to Avis offices in Denver resulted in additional frustration, none of the offices were able to switch out my car to the actual car I contracted for and the only solution offered me was that I should drive back 40 miles to the airport and switch the car out. This did not sound appealing to me to go out back out to the airport and wait another two hours in their “preferred customer” line. Reading other reviews here, I wonder how Avis stays in business.

So, I rented a vehicle from this company in Arizona. After a two hour wait to pick up the vehicle, it was defective. Everyday of my rental, we had to use our own money to put air in one of the tires. I returned home and discovered they had put an unauthorized charge of 450.00 for “smoke smell”. We don’t smoke. I cancelled my credit card and had the charge reversed. Three days later, they charged me again! Please do not rent from this company. The stress, the time and the frustration trying to get an answer.

These are the biggest crooks and bunch of liars I have ever dealt with in my 45 years of living, please don't make the mistake I made and deal with these people. They have ripped me off and cost me a tow bill after they told me to park there. Customer service, corporate, and front desk have no communication, you get a different person every time you call, and all of them either transfer you back and forth or tell you something different. They made promises they couldn't keep and cost me 3 more days rental because they left me stranded with no car and I was depending on their word which is nothing but lies. $1297 for a 5 day rental 6 hours of driving back and forth to the rental place and at least 4 hours a day on phone and they did not help or cooperate at all. They are rude and disrespectful. I will never rent a car anywhere again after this experience.

Absolutely HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. RUDE! Were the front desk woman and the man who got the cars from the back. I was there exchanging a car I received from the airport that had faulty steering and faulty brakes. I filled up the gas tank of the car I was returning and burned whatever it took me to get to the Danbury office which was not much more than a gallon. They said I didn't bring the car back full so they would have to charge me for the extra gas. THEY CHARGED ME $70. Didn't know this until I received my final bill a week later.
All the time I was at 58 Mill Plain Rd, Danbury the woman at the front desk and the man who got the cars from the back had a HORRIBLY RUDE attitude. The car they gave me as a replacement had faulty brakes and I had to exchange it again when I got to New York. All in all my rental experience with AVIS/BUDGET car rental was horrible but THE DANBURY LOCATION AT 58 Mill Plain Rd, Danbury CT was THE WORSE!

They are trying to stick me with another car renter's parking ticket from NJ, even though I only visited PA on my trip. You would not believe the hoops they are making me jump through. My AirBNB receipt is not enough. They want a time stamped receipt from that day. Car was full of gas, so obviously, I didn't go to the gas station. And since we spent the day with my 87 y.o. aunt just chatting and making food at home, I don't have any other receipts. This has become a NIGHTMARE, please for the love of God, DON'T RENT FROM AVIS, EVER!!!

On October 15, 2023, made a prepay reservation thru Avis.com for rental periods 10/16/23 to 10/19/23 with a pickup for 12:00 am. Upon arrival to LAX, I headed to LAX Avis to pick-up the rental car, which the time is now a few minutes after midnight, 10/16/23. In my attempt to rent the car, I learned that I needed a rental deposit of $250.00. When the clerk ran my credit card, it declined, 10/16/23 at 12:51 am..not enough funds available to cover the deposit. I asked if I could use my debit card but was told that I couldn't.
After numerous attempts to try and rent, I gave up and called my sister at 1:26 am to come and pick me up. I was home by 2:30 am. Subsequently, I called and asked for my prepay amount of $354.87 to be returned since I couldn't rent... Avis returned $204.87 leaving a balance due of $150.00, which they claimed is the cancellation fee. Avis stated to my credit company that on 10/16/23 at 3:06 am, I canceled and I wasn't entitled to the return of the $150.00. Well, at 12:51 am on 10/16/23, the clerk was swiping my credit card, I have paper proof, but yet according to them, I was a no show!!!! The devil is a lie!!! To date and after almost 7 attempts to get my $150.00 back, no refund has been issued. Be careful with this company, all that glitter isn't gold....don't you hear the hissing and rattling sound!!!!

Very bad service, I've been charging for months and asking for the deposit to be returned and they only are working to not return it. They ask me for documents and every time I send the documents they come out with something new to not return the deposit. It is not fair for them to play with people like this. I hope to be able to make a formal demand since it is not fair.

I rented a 15 passenger van for my mother's funeral & Burial. When I got to Avis location on 143 Courtland St NE, Atlanta, GA 30303, United States, 1/3/24 they told me a few mins before the van be ready, so we waited, and waited, and waited people coming in and going picking up and leaving. After several request and 2 1/2 hours later finally it was ready. They wanted to charge us for addition drivers that was normal, so my son asked them if they can help for the inconvenience of waiting so long. The rep advised they couldn't do anything so I got up and told them "you got us here waiting almost 3 hrs. and you can do anything?" She told us she can't but she will call the manager. The manager heard me and pop to the front counter and told me they can't discount while being on her cell phone. I then told her again and explain we sitting there for long time and I have to drive 18hrs to my mother's funeral and burial and she don't have no consideration!
She started yelling at me and me back explaining to her being a manager. She very unprofessional and really needs more manager training! My understanding as being a GM for many years is to calm the situation and use her Customer Service skills (That she has none) and provide the best solution to make the customer satisfied - Avis needs to be train and advise employees that Customers are the ones and who paid their salary. (No customers, No Jobs) After reviewing the rating of that store I understand why (2stars that location).
We have been renting with Avis for years in another location for many years and got Excellent great service but they didn't have a van at my location to help us. I will never and will advise many do not use that store ever. Finally - I did got to buried my mom, no one ever needs to go thru this experience ever, Avis need to demote that manager and train more their employees. I truly believe and know we have great people that loves their Jobs, and we congratulate them but hiring inexperienced people to fill position is not the way to go.

I rented a car from San Diego to Santa Barbara. It was an one night rental for $124. On December 13 at 4:45 AM I returned my car and dropped my key in the Avis drop box at the Santa Barbara airport. When I got home to Tampa Florida, I got to my Jeep in the short term parking area and quickly realized I had dropped my key in the AVIS box in California and I still had their rental car key. I immediately called Avis (customer service as Santa Barbara would not answer). First thing Friday morning, I overnighted their key ($127) charge and sent a note asking them to mail my key. From Wednesday evening to Monday, I spoke to at least 15 different Avis reps who could not help me and I called the Santa Barbara location 33 times and they would not answer.
On Monday, they finally closed my rental out and charged me $1,400 for some bogus fees and I was informed that if I wanted my Jeep key back, I had to reach out to Santa Barbara (again, they will NOT answer their phone). I understand if I had to pay for the additional days without the key but the rental was literally $84 per day. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE.

Rented a car for 10 days out of Kansas City in July 2023. Had no issues with the car or the service at the location. 4 months later, I received an additional charge from Avis. I called and they claimed it was a "toll charge." I asked for further information and they had no proof of such tolls, so the supervisor said he would issue a refund. 3 weeks later, no refund yet, called again and now they claim it's a speeding ticket. Requested TWICE to have a supervisor call me back because they're "busy." No call backs. Emailed their customer service and they ignore the complaint and refer me to site to look up the speeding infraction, which doesn't exist.
After a back and forth in email, they go back to claiming it's a toll charge but can't find a record of that either. So they decided to charge me extra without ANY evidence at all that any infractions actually having taken place. The lying and misleading from the company and its customer service reps is the absolute WORST I have ever experienced. Never again would I give them a dime!
