As a highly accomplished CEO with a doctoral degree, I would ask you to think twice before you select Tesla Energy for your solar project. Despite the undoubted competence of its CEO (real asset to the USA, his adopted country) and its technological prowess, Tesla's solar division is utterly incompetent, unresponsive and unprofessional in every possible way. If Tesla solar (or is it Tesla Energy) were a company in small developing country as opposed to the USA, its incompetence, unresponsiveness and unprofessionalism would still be shocking. The only thing they have going for them aside from their name recognition is their "unbeatable" price. However, be prepared for the worst possible service experience. In fact if I detailed my experience, you would think I was making it up! I would give them a rating of zero stars if this was possible.

I've been calling Tesla since August (it is now October), trying to get my solar panels (which are leased and under warranty) fixed. Every time we call, we are told that someone will call us back to schedule a maintenance visit. We have not yet received a call back. Instead every time we check in, they give us a run around about how scheduling will call us within 48 hours. Additionally, they will not listen when I (a woman) tell them that there is an issue, but they seem to take it more seriously when my husband calls. I have a degree in engineering, my husband is a farmer. Tell me who is the expert here. So basically, if your solar panels have an issue, don't count on Tesla to actually come out to fix them. And if you are a woman, you should probably find a guy to call for you because they are also sexist.

But no one showed up or even contacted us during the appointment. No answer to phonecall. No reply to email. Totally a waste of time. The worst customer service we have ever experienced.

The transfer process when you sell your home is a nightmare. It is literally impossible to get in touch with anyone by phone and they do not respond to emails. Literally on hold for 2 hours to try to get the required paperwork. When and in the rare moments you do get to talk to someone they always give you another number to call in a different department and still no answers or call backs when you leave a message. The only ones that answer the phone is if you say you are calling to purchase solar panels. Then they answer right away but only give you the same phone numbers you have already been calling.

It took four people making constant phone calls to get the right paperwork and even then it was at the very last minute. Keep this in mind if you would like to sell your home with these panels. What a nightmare. I have felt with several other solar companies in regard to transferring ownership and they manage to do it pretty well. While some better than others. Tesla was atrocious.

It has been a wild nightmare trying to get someone to help with removing the panels so the roofing company can repair the roof. If you call in, you are transferred so many times, that after hours on the phone, you are disconnected. You send emails and they want you to fill out a form at Tesla/realestate. You go there and they are advertising cars and no place to find this form you are to fill out. Next stop a visit to the attorney. Three months of fighting with them is enough. If you are considering solar panels with this company "RUN" and don't look back.

Over the weekend I ordered an 8.16kW Solar Panel setup for my home and paid the $100.00. After going through sending pictures I was sent my design plan for approval. To my dismay they designed a 6.12kW system with a big green button to click to move forward. Not one thing was said about any problem with sizing (I have over 524sqf available). Feeling they were trying to bait and switch, I cancelled the order.

Today I was notified by Matt V, that they needed to put a few panels in front of my roof but I didn't want that... Nobody ever asked as I would have been all for it. Whoever designs these systems should have picked up the phone and said "hey there isn't room, can we put 2, 3 5 panels over the front? or actually had someone come out and do some measurements when a customer is serious (I was paying cash for this system and was ready). By communicating they would have saved the sale.

I know you see the 1 star and the title but I want to start off this post by saying I love Tesla cars. I have had a Model S since 2015 and I love hearing about Tesla’s success. When the solar panel price dropped in July 2020 I jumped on the bandwagon happy to support Tesla again. I called family and friends to recommend them adding solar as well. I regret that now and will be telling everyone I can about the worst experience I have had will a company in over a decade…They need to work on their solar side.

    1) The initial process was wonderful and even installation was a positive experience. Those installing the panels were great, courteous and knowledgeable…wait, isn’t that it. Shouldn’t I be happy…. 2) The first problem started on day 1 of 2 with the installation. See Tesla doesn’t mention this on their website or even call you beforehand, but pest abatement is extra. This is where they put mesh around your panels to ensure squirrels and birds don’t get in. The cost depends on your size but the original price was $1,500 for the large solar panels…a little much in my opinion and it did feel like a little bait and switch. Also, by going through Tesla it would cover you if any pests did get in. I was told that one chewed wire would cost $700 to fix. If this was the end of the matter I would have still been happy.

    3) I confirmed that I wanted the pest abatement on the second day of the install and they said they would send out a new addendum to the contract. The installers added it. Wonderful, all good. My loan went through for the original price and I was just going to pay Tesla up front for the $1,500 extra when I got the bill. Then… Tesla got paid and everything went silent (they also sent a survey out which I regret giving 5 stars on now).

For THREE weeks Tesla did not send any paperwork to my utility company to complete the setup…no solar power, no savings, just paying the loan for something that is not working. Also, it takes the utility company ~4 weeks to turn on the system once they get the paperwork. Tesla has all the paperwork but did not send it. Their excuses:

    1) I did not sign the updated contract with the pest abatement…Well, they admitted they forgot to send it. It took them another week to send it…Tick tock, no paperwork to the utility company…
    2) When they finally did send it the new price was $2,250…Yep, they increased the already absurd number. They said they would fix it….Another week later and still the wrong price…Tick tock, no paperwork sent to the utility company.
    3) Also, during this entire time no one would respond to my calls. You are given one contact (mine was Bever-leigh **) and she would not respond to any of my calls. I did receive one email after 5 days saying the problem would be fixed in a week or so. There is no one to escalate any issues to good luck.

    4) When I finally got ahold of Bever-leigh, the excuse was they were really backed up, oh, and my calling was only slowing it down more. I am blown away that it is so difficult to send three electronic documents to a utility company.

Anyways, my installation was on July 28th, 2020 and it is now September 1st. Tesla is not going to send the paperwork because they are backed up and the pest abatement contract needs to be signed. They will get to fixing the contract in a while. Considering the slow progress, horrible customer service, lack of ability to escalate I do not expect to have the paperwork over to my utility company till mid Sept with a potential to have this system on by mid-Oct. My suggestion, go with a local company. They have more skin in the game, better customer service, and the ability to actually get a hold of someone even after you pay them. Oh, and all those recommendations to friends, family and neighbors are gone. My sister-in-law bought them but I am going to try my best to stop anyone else from dealing with this company.

We originally had the solar panels installed by Solar City and never had a problem with them. Ever since Tesla took over it has been nothing but problems. The gateway where we are supposed to be able to check our solar production has not worked since Tesla took over. They have sent people out to try and fix it, but finally just said that it doesn't work and there's nothing they can do, so we can't check our production. We just received our 2-month electricity bill and noticed there was no solar production credit, so we called Tesla. They told us that our panels are not producing anything.

We scheduled a service appointment and were given a date 2 weeks away. When nobody ever showed up, we called back. It took several days of being on hold for hours at a time to finally speak to someone. We were told that there had never been a service call scheduled, even though my husband had the call on speaker phone and we both heard that we were scheduled for 8/27/20. We were given a new service date on January 4, 2021!! It is currently August 2020.

They said there is nothing they can do, that is their first available date. We asked to speak to a supervisor and were told that he could could give her a message and she would call us back when she was ready. I would NEVER choose to do business with this company and if I had any idea that they would be taking over Solar City I would have gone with a different company.

I decided to place an order with Tesla Solar. The price was very affordable (even without the federal rebates). However, before placing the order, I asked the sales rep if I needed to cancel, would I be able to get my $100 deposit back. He said yes. Well, fast forward a few weeks, and I learned that 1. they don't guarantee production output (most if not all reputable solar companies do) and 2. their "outstanding" 20-year warranty is still behind other company's 25-year warranty. Coupled that with the other thousands of negative reviews you can easily find on the internet, it was an easy decision to cancel my order. I'm lucky I only "lost" $100 (even though I was told from my rep I wouldn't). Pretty dishonest business practice IMO. Would definitely NOT recommend to anyone.

I had bought the unit outright and have since learned how to repair and make the thing work myself better than how they did it and they won't honor their own warranties. It was cheaper for me to go this route over trying to sue them as two lawyers I talked with would not take the case without some upfront money which means they were figuring not getting much from them. Shop around. Go visit other installs and talk to the customers in person before choosing your solar company.

The system was installed fast and those guys were geared up to do it that way. Solar City was the installer and they did lie about a few important things verbally when selling the system to us. The two things were later taken care of at my expense after they were added to a second "modified lease" I signed. Whenever a modified lease happens make sure you read every page including warranty when dealing with solar. A lease is iron clad. Read it. A year or two into the lease Tesla bought Solar city out and Tesla isn't focused on Solar for homes. They focus on the cars. The web site is terrible. The hold times on the phone are longer than cable tv used to be. They try pushing you to the web site for every thing pushes you to call. A loop that leads nowhere.

They won't put enough panels up there to save you enough money on the power to make it worth getting the system on a lease. They don't tell you anything about battery storage for night. They want you to pay $8000.00 bucks for that set up later on. What I leased is a solar system that produces just enough energy to pay the monthly lease. The power company still bills me and less the almost exact amount of lease cost. We have plenty of roof space and yard space but they won't put more panels. If going Solar, buy the system. Replace your roof before they do the panels or replace roof, install panels together. Get the battery storage for night time and you might save a few bucks.

Another matter with this company is the billing. As Solar City actual people were available for questions and assistance but since Tesla took over not so much. Still have a large "true up" amount due every year to PG&E, so the panels aren't producing enough energy for our needs. "True Up" is a yearly payment made directly to PG&E. We pay Tesla monthly for the energy we produce on our panels at a lower rate than PG&E. I wish we had investigated further.

I contracted with Solar City end of 2016 to install a residential solar energy system. They typically use historical electricity consumption data to determine the design: number of solar panels, placement etc. Since I had just installed a large exercise swim spa whose heating system is electrical, I insisted and they agreed to not use the retrospective data as it was invalid, but to take three more months worth of electricity readings prospectively to base their design and installation. However, they only took two months worth, and the system that was installed has never adequately met my electricity needs.

Six months after installation, I requested an audit that they refused to do, telling me that they needed a full year of data before they would conduct an audit. By 12 months Tesla had bought out Solar city and I received a bill from Southern California Edison electricity company for over $1000 for supplemental electricity over that year. I called Tesla immediately to inform them and embarked on a several month negotiation process with them as I was simply asking them to correct the design flaw. They resisted and delayed for many months but finally agreed to do it if it didn’t involve additional solar panels but could be done by moving some panels to the south facing side of the house which had to be approved by the city.

After I obtained city approval, I contacted them to move the panels and they told me they would need to charge me several thousand dollars! Obviously no longer acting in good faith, I retained an attorney who was unsuccessful in achieving a settlement and now I’m on a second attorney, also unsuccessful, so I’m pursuing a mediation and arbitration process as agreed to in the lease contract I signed. They are still an uncooperative refusing to post their part of the filing fee! I’m in a similar quandary because I’m under a 30 year lease and want to sell my house soon.

I stopped paying my Tesla monthly bill as it’s the only leverage I had with Tesla in protest since they had clearly acted in bad faith over those many months. That is where things stand. I am interested in seeing who is involved in a class action suit with Tesla Re: residential solar energy systems. it seems like there’s many homeowners who have been ripped off, and we have very little recourse especially if under a lease when we can’t sell her house unless a new owner agrees to take over the lease. I would seriously caution anyone against using Tesla in purchasing your solar energy system. They’ve been totally dishonest and unprofessional.

Hello. As an individual who tries to be environmentally aware, I was eager to look into solar energy for my newly constructed home in 2015. I eventually went with Solar City in the spring of 2017 because of their connection at the time to Tesla. One of the things I remember the salesman telling me was that the rate per kWh would always be comparable to my regular utility company supplier. The deal seemed attractive. Solar City/Tesla provides all of the equipment and maintenance free of charge, and you just pay them for your energy use instead of your local utility company. However, 3 years later I am paying 2x the per kWh rate as my local utility company in PA is charging, PPL.

In addition, the contract states that Tesla can raise my per kWh rate by almost 3% yearly!!!! If you are considering a Tesla solar panel contract, please review and compare the rates closely, and look for that yearly increase!! As I said, I am now paying twice as much for electricity then if I had just stayed with my local utility provider.

Our solar has been out since March 8 and we have STILL been unable to get someone out to fix it. It’s costing us thousands and is totally UNACCEPTABLE! If I could give them zero stars, I would. I've called them at least 15x over the last two months and they've still not sent anyone out to fix the issue. How is this possible???

They finished the installation and it never generated power because of an issue with the Delta inverter. The Delta inverter was bad since installed, they gave me BS for 3 weeks straight until I got PTO permit to operate from FPL. I have the PTO for one month now and the System do not generate any solar, I call CS and they blame Delta, Delta on the other hand blame Tesla, two months with the panels in the roof and no energy, it is a Rip-off. It is tech like this that will save the future. We will see poverty end, dreams be made, potential be nurtured, crime rate go down, dreams come true, we may even get an answer to that age old question "why are we here." The Tesla Solar Panels for the Roof are my current favorite. I've been looking into them. I know they could change the face of small struggling towns in America. Just imagine placing the cost of an energy bill back into the pockets of struggling families. They will be able to spend more on food, education, in their local economies, its wonderful. We own that to Tesla. We need to encourage America to follow their example.

Over the course of the year, I called the Tesla salesperson (car sales), who sold me the $150 deal, at least 5-6 times and called/searched for others at tesla to try to get them to give me a solar bid and then to try to get my $150 back. We installed a leased solar on our home in 2017 using their leased solar program. We had a leased solar unit on our former home & were able to transfer it to the new owners. That was in 2016. Since that time & particularly since the bailout of Solar City by Tesla owner Elon Musk there has been nothing but negative news on Tesla. We've had our current home on the market for over a year. It's a newer home in a 55+ community. We're retired real estate appraisers & know/understand the market well. The average marketing time in our community is 71 days with a 94.8% listing to sales price. We've had over 250 showings & walkthroughs & have not received even one offer! Tesla has migrated from the leased solar program to a Rental/Subscription program whereby solar panels can be installed by Tesla & if ever the owner wants them removed Tesla will do so for a cost of $1,500.

We have written numerous e-mails requesting Tesla to give us the same consideration as with their rental/subscription program & take the solar panels off in order to sell our home. We are retired on a fixed income & have health issues which necessitate selling & downsizing. We don't have the resources to pay the lease balance & now know no one wants to assume this lease. We also don't have the time & ability to get an attorney - real estate prices in Phoenix are increasing 8-10% a year & we'll soon be priced out of the market if we can't sell our home. Reading the many reviews we know we're not the only ones in this predicament - hoping someone comes up with a workable solution & can share it with us all.

For the past year or more solar system shuts down during and after any amount of rain for days, showing a GFI FAULT (short circuit). This problem has not been addressed by Tesla. All they say is, "Your system generates the minimum agreed to in the contract." Problem is, I have zero solar production for 3-4 days after the rain stops, even in sunny weather. The system is unreliable and if I could get rid of it I would. We purchased a Tesla Model 3 last year believing the solar system would help with charging. Well, it does as long as it is working. It costs a lot to charge 4-5 hours a day at 240V, 42A using utility power. Tesla doesn't care. The system is off now with a GFI FAULT and has been for 3-1/2 of the past 4 days. If there is any amount of drizzle or rain - no solar power for days. What a mistake I made.

If I could give NO Stars, I would! Unfortunately, I assumed a lease when I purchased my home about 1.5 years ago. I have had to deal with Tesla (was Solar City) about three times now and their customer service is absolutely despicable! When I had to have my roof re-shingled, they not only held up the process, when they replaced the panels they did not do so to code. They even took pictures before they removed them, and I asked why. Was told so they placed them back the same way. Did that happen, NO!

When I asked where the pictures were, no one knew. I had to get a city inspector out here to even get them to correct the situation. Even then, not knowing he was a city inspector, the man stood there and said, "They are to code...." So he was told no they Are Not, and the specifics, and he then said, "They were to code when they were placed in 2014." So we asked what does that have to do with this date in 2019? He then said, "No, they aren't to code." Which trust me, was more than obvious! They eventually did re-do the job, and then tried to charge me.

Now, the panels have not worked for days and days. I was told someone would contact me to arrange for repair within 2-4 days. NO ONE EVER contacted me. I phoned them to be told I was contacted. I told her no, I was not, and she said she was looking at the account notes...I asked her what the name of the person was who wrote those notes. She said, "Are you recording this conversation?" I did not answer but asked the question again, Again she asked, "Are you recording this conversation?" Again, I did not answer her and again I asked the question. She then said, "I am ending this call," and hung up on me. Oh No You Don't!!!

I smell legal action! I will give them until the date and time she indicated they would be coming to fix the system, and if they do not, that is exactly what MUST be done. I have a contract and I am NOT receiving the power from the system, it is down at the box on the outside of my home. Meanwhile, the small white box inside the home shows everything is working just fine...if I would not have went to the back of my home and looked, I would have never known. They do an "even up" on the anniversary of the start up where I get money of they do not perform up to contract specs and I pay them if they over produce. It does not produce enough to charge the batteries which makes my 2 Tesla batteries practically useless. The solar will not charge them it completely. Now They say my system is underpowered for my batteries but I signed off for the system so it is my fault. Tesla believes I should use my power better. They would however sell me a second additional system that would power my home, well and charge the batteries after I have had this system 1 year. This is at an additional cost!!!

We have tried to get through all the customer service reps for months. They continue to say I bought the system, and it is performing as Tesla projected (solar only) and therefore there is nothing they will do. The batteries do not have a performance warranty as far of being a backup. I was told the size of system would be according to my power bill, and that would project my need. According to NV Energy they should have used 2 years of bills to figure out the need for my house. Tesla uses only 1 year. $ 30,000 later I am so screwed. Originally has a remote Solar City rep do a plan for my house but I wanted somebody local. I found a rep through Home Depot to come out. I'll cut to it. He said I would produce 100% of my electricity based on my bills. The electric bills started coming in high. Worked with Solar City and got a lot of not helpful info like dust or shade issues. I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because after a year and writing a scathing survey, a manager from Tesla called and explained that my design is only configured to produce 59% of my electricity. That was sad news but prefer the honesty that I apparently did not read my contract and compare it to what I was told. Also that apparently when you have a loan in this case through Techcu, the electricity rate is charged higher like as if BMW charges me higher gas prices while I finance the car. Today I turned around and paid off the loan so will have to see if this is in fact true.

So for I am more than $22,000 into this experience and not saving anything so fingers crossed that the rate change after the loan has been paid off is a true scenario. I do believe that if this company wants to improve their rep, they need to have a way to have an honest non sales rep review the contract with the potential client so that the salesperson does not tell a not totally honest story. It started as an experience to be environmentally conscious into a very expensive mistake. I am still happy a manager did care enough about a poor survey to call. He did explain the real scenario vs what we were told. So believe it or not, that did bring my frustration level down and won't waste my time again with their customer service folks who may want to help you but won't or cannot review your contract and relay what kind of situation you actually signed up for. They also took the rebate.

We have a Tesla car and wanted to put in solar with the Power Wall for charging and back up. When we first contacted the local Tesla Solar team, we were originally told that the wait for the Power Wall was 12 months due to Tesla providing batteries to Puerto Rico. They then told us IF we bought the solar system from Tesla (we originally were going with a local vendor and just buying Power Wall from Tesla) they could get them in 4 months. So we signed an agreement (for $65K cash), paid the deposit and had the initial site visit. We were told to have our electrician meet with the installation team as we would need a separate sub-panel for the backup. All good. UNTIL we get a call 2 weeks later saying that there was a sudden "global demand" for the Power Wall and now it is 10 months to get them.

So let me get this straight, when we ORDERED the Power Wall it was 4 months and AFTER we ordered it suddenly had a surge in "global demand"? We dug a bit more and found out that the REAL REASON FOR THE 10 MONTH DELAY IS QUALITY ISSUES WITH THE BUILT-IN INVERTER OF THE POWER WALL 2. We are cancelling our order and requested that they cover the cost of our contractor. They would rather inflict a disastrous customer service experience (from someone who is a customer of the Model X) than do the right thing. If this is how they treat an existing customer, question how they would treat someone just buying solar. Disgusting.
