I resisted solar electricity, for many years mainly due to the minor savings my friends were experiencing. In September 2018, I began researching solar electricity, due to an abnormally high electric bill. After enlightening myself I interviewed 4 representatives of four established and recognized solar providers. After exhaustive research and interviews I selected SunPower, represented by Rene ** from 1st Alliance. Rene is charismatic, through and knowledgeable of his product and others in the industry.
Immediately after making the decision Rene and Jessica ** from SunPower went to work. Permits were submitted and approved, the system was installed, inspections were completed and approved and in less than 6 weeks the system was up and running. I went with 15 of Sun Power’s photovoltaic panels, in December (not known for a good month for solar energy) the system is producing an average of 20 + KWH daily, more than enough to provide all my electrical needs. I strongly recommend 1st Alliance/Sun Power.
Hi Harry, Thank you for your thoughtful review. That's great to hear you're producing so much energy even when there's not a lot of available sunlight. That's what happens when you choose the world's most efficient solar panels. Here's to many more months of solar savings in 2019!

In 2014 we decided to go solar as this is our retirement home. I contacted three Solar Companies and decided to go with SunPower. They are in CA, panel are made in the US. Solar is one of my retirement investments. Keith ** and Urban Energy were amazing to work with. Extremely professional and informative. We clean our panels quarterly because we live in Long Beach.
Thanks, Nancy! Yes, it's good to keep those panels clean if you don't get regular rainfall.

I like the SunPower panels a lot, but there has been quality problems with micro-inverters. I could forgive the quality problems, if there was prompt resolution to the issues, but project management and customer support & responsiveness is constantly subpar. For example: initial installation in 2016-2017 was poorly managed from scheduling/project management point of view. I felt that I had to be a project manager for the whole process and the whole process took way too long. 4+ months. Because of SunPower inability to deliver system in time, I missed NEM 1.0 deadline.
Then about 1 year after installation, my system started to have production problems. Even when the problems were quite obvious, it took me multiple weeks to convince SunPower that there was an actual a problem and get acknowledgment from SunPower about the issues. Eventually all micro inverters were replaced, but my case is still open because there has been no resolution to the compensation for lost production capacity (about 1700 kWh). SunPower customer support keeps ignoring my emails for 3+ months in a row now. I would recommend SunPower to my friends (and I actually have already), but going forward it's hard for me to recommend SunPower because of bad customer support & project management.
Rami, Thank you for this sincere feedback. I will share it with our executive leadership team because we're working on improving our customer service experience. We went solar to save money and help save environment. The SunPower team was very professional, explained everything along the way. I would rate the team with 5 stars. The only reason I entered 4 stars above is because we were just activated and I want to see how much we produce and see the results on electric bill before I say this has been a 5 star experience. Thanks.

I purchased a house with SunPower panels and thought this was going to be a home run. It has been the complete opposite. Every month my PSEG bill keeps going up and when I'm clearly producing enough energy to cover me for the month? Is this a SunPower problem or my electric company's problem? Very hard to get an answer from anyone. Not happy.

You have bad customer service. Report a problem and company says "we have 15 days to respond" then after 15 days they put you on a schedule for 30 days later service call. It sucks. I DO NOT CARE how many tons of Carbon dioxide I have deprived the plants from breathing due to my use of solar. I wish you would STOP reminding me each email and on the panel by my inverter. Do you think I do not know that plants, such as I eat, carrots, potatoes, peppers, etc, depend on CO2 to survive? That so called green house gasses are GOOD for the planet because they stave off the next ice age? I would like to know how much MONEY I have saved over the current electric rate per day or month instead.

Ever since I sign up for solar from SunPower Co. I been having nightmare about what I sign up for. First took the co. 6 months before they come and install the panels then another 2-3 months to turn it on. I guess what I had was to call them and do the legwork that the drop the ball on finally turn on. This is in 8/18. Supposedly system should be up and running. It’s 12/18. I’m paying SunPower the bill and also my regular bill to my local provider (ConEd). Made several calls to Sunpower only to get no good result and most of all I ask to speak to a supervisor several times and was told that I will hear from them within 3 days (never heard from them). It’s my 3 request now again in the 2 day didn’t hear from no one. This is very stressful. Not to mention it’s few months now into a 20 yes 20 years contract which I sign up for. It’s a nightmare.

We had SunPower panels installed by Roof Diagnostics 5 years ago as a lease. There was a guarantee that the panels would produce a min amount each year which they have not in any of the 5 years we had them. SunPower has reimbursed us the difference of what our panels produced and the minimum amount guaranteed. This last year our communication box stopped working and we went through all of the troubleshooting steps and had to set up an appointment for a tech to come back in March. That tech was dispatched to the wrong state and we have not been able to get one back out here since. Customer service was notified multiple times and just talk in circles. It has been over 6 months and we are still waiting for an appointment.
Fast forward to August, we know according to our lease that we are eligible for an early buyout. Contacted Customer Service again after being told the paperwork would come in the mail in Septemeber it turns out from the 5th rep that we spoke to, when the paperwork did not arrive, we had to send an email inquiry to request it. Received the information a few weeks later after requesting several times via email. Since October we have been trying to get a supervisor on the line to discuss the buyout number. Our buyout on our lease is based on a system that generates a min of 8,600 kw where ours, historically has been averaging 7,1000 kw. That is less than 84% of what it is supposed to generate.
We were told that SunPower the buy out is not negotiable and that SunPower has in the past refunded us the money when our system did not hit the min amount, which is 100% true except for this year because they can't get a tech to fix our meter communication box. My issue is that if it has never ever produced the min guarantee amount why would I have to pay the full price of the system during buy out. If I bought the panels I would no longer be reimbursed for the amount that they did not produce like I did when I was under their lease. I want to buy the panels since the lease gets costly going forward. Right now, instead of standing by their product, they send us to different customer services reps over and over who promise a supervisor will call and they never do.
I have never ever had such a horrible experience with Customer Service as I have had with SunPower. There are a ton of companies out there that care about their service and will have techs dispatched to your house when something is broken. There are companies who stand by their product and will address concerns that their customers have with them. SunPower is not one of them. It is very unfortunate that I am stuck dealing with a company that is so big they do not care about their customer. I would not recommend SunPower to anyone because as soon as something goes wrong you are out on your own.
We apologize for the experience you had with us. We'd really like to look into this further. Please expect a call from an Executive Support Specialist to discuss your concerns in detail and provide additional assistan

We had been on automatic payments since the beginning of the lease and tried to turn off automatic payments online due to a financial situation change - wife was on unpaid maternity leave. We then received an automatic payment and incurred an NSF fee back in September 2018. I called customer service and was on the phone for about an hour and was told that automatic payments could not be turned off online and that they would turn it off. October came and we made a manual payment on the due date. Lo and behold an automatic payment came through as well and caused another NSF fee. I was going to call to complain but forgot about it for a little while.
November came and no automatic payment came through on the due date...ok, maybe they finally turned it off. December 1st, automatic payment is back...super another NSF fee. I just called customer service and they were no help. All I got was, “Would you like to turn off the automatic payment?” GRRRR. I have been making manual payments, why would I also like to have automatic payments. I asked to be reimbursed for the NSF fees that we incurred and I got silence. I asked to speak to a supervisor and I got, "we will have someone call within two business days". Not a happy camper.

We were extremely disappointed to find that after spending $50K on solar, SunPower initially did NOT deliver the all black panels that you show in all your ads. Instead, you delivered newer, slightly more efficient panels, with a white grid, that do not have the black, clean look of what you show in almost 100% of your marketing and advertising.
The local dealer was helpful in swapping them out but the entire situation never should have happened. SunPower (corp - not your local dealers) is not being honest in its advertising when you show one thing and deliver another panel that looks not as clean. If the newer panels are your new standard, then THAT is what you need to show in all your advertising. Additionally, we'd asked for a system that would get us to net $0 but we're still paying PG&E $100/mo and an annual payment of $1200 on top of that. To get the system properly sized, we'd need to spend another $3K to buy 2 more panels (and no, not just to compensate for the change in 6 panels which are slightly less efficient). Frustrating.

Empower solar: Honestly, I was extremely happy from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable, professional, thorough and for the most part, clean. I looked into solar 3 years prior with a different company and they did not meet my expectations and could not provide 100% solar. Empower’s initial quote and design was changed upon full site visit and they were able to provide 105% of solar with less panels, which means less money out of pocket. They had me installed and up and in solar production in 8 hrs!
When the town inspector came a few days later, he says, "Oh great, you used Empower, they make my job easy!" Their customer service and response to questions is great too. To date, my pseg bill is $10-12 / month, even in summer with central ac running July-Sept! The NYRSDA loan installments are paid on-bill over 15 years. I purchased 24 panels. I assumed that they will allow me to view the production of each panel like most other less expensive products. I was wrong. They told me that is not given to customers. They told me that they will monitor the system and if anything goes wrong, they get alerted and they act immediately to fix it. If it is fixable remotely, they will do it. If not they will come on site and fix it. The inverters on the panels started to fail. They failed to work in April, May, June, July, August, and September. I finally contacted them and told them that the monthly report they send me is showing a big difference between 2017 and 2018 productions. I had to wait 3 weeks till they showed up at the house and replaced all 24 inverters on all 24 panels. Comparing the production of the system from 2017 to 2018, it was down 45%.
It was 4942 kWh less than 2017. If we multiply that by .26, they end up owing me $1284. They refuse to compensate me the full amount and they are only paying $791. Their reason is that in my contract it stipulate that I should expect a degradation in performance over the years. In the contract, their estimate of 2018 production is only 50 kWh less than 2017! And that is due to system getting old. Their system failed to operate for April-October NOT producing as expected. This is after I paid close to $40k.
Their customer support is horrible. The person I have been dealing with does not answer his phone. He emailed me that they will send me a debit card with the $791 on it, not a check. I asked him who is sending the debit card just to watch out for it and not have it get lost in junk mail. Is it Sunpower envelop that the card will be in? I have sent 6, that is right 6 emails on 6 different consecutive days asking the same question with no reply. The lesson is, do not buy from this company. Buy from a company that allows you to view the production of each panel.

The system hasn't been producing power for over a month, with an 'Arc fault' error reported on the inverter. The first time, in July 2017, it took three weeks before a service guy was sent out. He wasn't able to find a problem, but repeated inverter power cycles eventually resulted in the inverter working again. Since then it has repeated the fault several times, but multiple power cycles reset the problem. Then about five weeks ago the arc fault recurred and couldn't be cleared by power cycling. Reporting the problem resulted in several weeks with no response, and then an emailed generic troubleshooting guide that didn't address the problem. Even taking into account the periods where the system didn't work, it has produced substantially less than promised. We were told that there would be an automatic annual review and correction for the power generation deficit, but that has never occurred.

We were looking to have lower monthly rates so we decided to look into solar energy systems. We got a brochure from SunPower and inquired about the solar, and we got the solar panels on a lease. My husband and I were computing because if we did not get solar panels, our monthly bill could be lower. Before we got solar, our monthly bill would sometimes be 78 or lower. Right now, it's fixed. We are paying $108 for a monthly lease of the solar panel. Also, we did not know that every year, we have to pay accumulated energy consumed. So, during our first year, we were surprised that we had to pay a bill of $1,300.
We attempted to sell our house two times already and the prospective buyers would back off because of the solar panels. Even if the agents would explain the benefits of having solar compared to just paying the regular energy monthly, they still don't want it. They feel like it's a lien in the property that they don't want. In fact, our house was on sale last August and we got an offer last September. We were in escrow for two weeks and all of a sudden, our buyer backed out because of the solar panel. They feel that they're gonna be tied up paying the monthly lease for how many years. So, we weren't able to sell our house. Right now, we regret getting solar and we're not happy at all.
Hi Jen, we're sorry for the problems you've encountered trying to sell your property. SunPower does provide different options for prospective buyers trying to purchase homes with lease agreements. If you would like to discuss this further please sent me a private message.

Around April-May, I was looking for solar system and contacted few companies. When SunPower sales guys came to meet and described how good the company and product is. I immediately agreed for my order and signed agreement. I was told I will have my system running by end of July. And then, all the trouble started. After waiting till mid of June, I contacted my project coordinator and asked for status. I was told that it is stuck with the town for permit. I provided them with the information town was looking for, post which permit was granted and I was informed to get system installed around mid July.
When I didn't get any updates again, I tried to contact my project coordinator via email and phone but got no response. Then suddenly I was told that installer received wrong panels hence there will be a delay and installation cannot be done before 3rd week of August. When I said if my panels are not installed by end of July I would prefer to cancel my order. To which SunPower rep said okay you can cancel your order. Then I contacted my sales company and they said don't cancel the order and we will get it installed by end of July. Finally the installation day came around end of July and installation team started installation.
To my surprise they stopped working around 2:30 PM and said they will have to come back to finish work. When I questioned them, initially they said they don't have enough time and then they said they don't have all the materials and will come back in a week. I again contacted my sales team and project coordinator, who finally got it scheduled for next day and I thought my struggle is over. But I was wrong. After inspection and all, I was told that papers have been submitted to my utility company and they will switch me to net meter.
When I contacted my utility company, they informed me that they have not received all the paperwork and can't switch my meter. Again when I reached out to my sales team and project coordinator, I was told that utility company is just making excuse to delay the switch. Which turned out to be wrong as my utility company was looking for receipt from Mass ACA and SunPower had no idea about that. I wouldn't complain much about it as they just started to do residential in Mass. So first they submitted papers to Mass ACA on my behalf due to which they rejected application as it should have been initiated by me. (I got to know that when I called Mass ACA). Post which I started my application and added my SunPower contact as representative to submit on my behalf.
Again it took them 3 weeks to collect all the required documents and prepare my application. On one fine day I was told that my application is submitted and I don't have to do anything now. By this time I was very confident on how SunPower people can mess up things and give call to Mass ACA after a week. And you know what, application was not submitted and it was in draft status. With help of Mass ACA representative, I completed and submitted my application. Finally I got approval from Mass ACA and once SunPower paid the required fee we got the receipt my utility provider was looking for.
My utility provider took only two days to change meter and finally on Oct 26th, my solar system was up and running. Again I thought my struggle is over but not completely. As of today, the SunPower monitoring is not reporting the correct electricity produced or sent back to grid. I have sent pictures of net meter from morning and evening showing more electricity send back to grid as compared to what being reported by monitoring system. But no one is able to figure it out yet. Also I am still waiting to get confirmation that my application for SMART program is submitted. Which will again rely on this monitoring system to pay me back. Overall I am just hoping this all is just the installation trouble and I will have better experience with the system later on. But who can predict future. Only thing I know is past and present experience is not so good.
Hi Rohit, I apologize for the experience you've had with us. I would love the opportunity to restore your confidence in SunPower. Your case has been assigned to our executive escalations department and you will be contacted within 24 hours. We look forward to speaking with you.

We called several times and each time we were told we would have a response within 7 to 10 days. We indicated to customer service on our original call that we had the same problem with the other inverter (we have 2) and it would need to be replaced. We indicated to customer service to order an inverter, but we were told that a technician would have to assess the problem. He indicated that it would, in fact, have to be replaced. The technician was here approximately 1 1/2 hours to replace the defective inverter. We don't understand why problems like this have to take so long to be resolved. Your customer service needs to be more proactive and not customers should not have to be told "7 to 10 days" every time a contact is made.

I recently purchased a house and going solar seemed like a good idea. I know somebody who was working out of the SunPower San Jose office. I got into the friends and family program. I’m happy I decided to go solar, but not really happy with what I've been experiencing with SunPower. There have been frequent problems with the system. I've had to have service technicians come out about six times in the three years that I've had the system. They haven’t given me all the details as to what’s going on. They replaced the panels about six months ago and they’ve had to replace the inverter twice.
I called the Better Business Bureau and they responded to that complaint. And I was also told by somebody who installs solar panels that the way the system was installed was the problem. The design itself is how they were laid out on my roof at different angles is what comes with the panels. That’s not something that can be fixed just by replacing panels or the inverter.
I also don’t know how to contact SunPower directly. There’s the 1-800 SunPower number that I’ve been using to reach the company to ask for help. But it’s routed to the Philippines and they don’t seem to be set up to take complaints or requests. They’re the people you call when there’s a technical glitch and they’d run some tests and send somebody else to take a look at it. The only time I heard directly from somebody here in the States, from SunPower, was when I filed that complaint. I would like SunPower to contact me and resolve the larger issue on how the panels are arrayed.
John, We're very sorry to hear you've experienced these challenges with SunPower. We will have a customer service supervisor get in touch with you as soon as possible to get this resolved.

I work at a University and we were using SunPower's commercial services. They seemed trustworthy. When I was looking at solar, there were issues like tree shading and availability of power conduits and SunPower was able to come up with a solution better than the other companies. I'm 100% satisfied going solar but there are things that could have been done better. The process of negotiating the rate was kinda like buying a used car. There was like a lot more negotiation than I thought was necessary. I thought it was just kind of a fixed price thing, but it seemed like it was more like a negotiation with the salesperson saying he had to call his boss.
Also, I'm using more power than I'm producing from solar, so I should have gotten a bigger system and the interface could be better online. It's not very user-friendly, like when I wanna see how much power I would be using for the year and how much they're contracted to provide for me, it's not super clear. It would be nice if it combines what power I'm using from the power company versus what power I'm using from the solar because I have to pay for whatever power I use in excess of my solar. Then, once in a while, the router or some electronic component becomes disconnected. Sometimes it happens, and then, I have to kind of troubleshoot it and it's a little bit tricky. I've called customer service before about it. Other than those, it's a good deal.

Customer must initiate call and get case number. SunPower's Customer service is located in the Philippines. Expect to wait on hold multiple times while getting Level 1 assistance (30+ minutes). No way to avoid Level 1 even with case number. Only then are you transferred to tech support (in spite of choosing that choice originally on their automated system). Then tech support will issue a case number only to be told that their data group must research to see what the problem is.
They are to call back in 3-5 days or issue a repair request with the local installer. When that does not happen (which it has not), in spite of now having a case number, the timing and process on the phone will essentially start all over again beginning at Level 1. I provided information with data as well as which part is currently involved. None of this information was taken down during the call. Costing us $200+/mo. in electric bills while waiting for their data group to respond. Previous bills have not been larger than $15/mo. Still waiting for service to be approved.

I'm very satisfied going solar, and my experience with SunPower has been very good. With SunPower, I liked the idea of leasing the solar panels versus owning them, the payback, and their reputation. Enrolling with them was straightforward and quick, except they subcontracted out the installation, which was okay but not great. We've been live for three years, and our primary benefit is the reduced cost.
Thank you for choosing SunPower, Chris! Glad our lease option was an advantage for you.

I’ve had SunPower for five years now and I would highly recommend the company. My experience has been very good. The system still generates solar power and I’ve powered about 85% of my needs. It works well and I’m very happy with it. The process has been very easy as well. I've had minimal interactions with their representatives but when my monitoring goes down, I like to unplug and plug it back in. And whenever I've had interactions with the representatives, I have been happy with them. They've been very responsive.

When I bought my home in 2016, it came with a SunPower system installed. For the first two years, everything worked beautifully. The SunPower app makes it really easy to see how much energy you are collecting! My electric bills for this home are 1/3 of what they were for the small condo I lived in previously. Amazing! That was until the panels failed. After several weeks of going between SunPower and their repair partner and two failed attempts to fix my original system, SunPower authorized a full warranty replacement. I could not be happier with the end result. The new system is once again collecting significant amounts of solar energy. My electric bills are going back down and aligning to where they were before the failure! I definitely recommend SunPower as a company that stands behind their product.
Thank you, Heather! We're sorry your system experienced downtime but glad everything is working well again.

Initially went solar to save on money and take advantage of the expiring tax incentives. Sunpower has been pretty good, though I will say I was a little upset that monitoring wasn’t included because I bought my panels outright. During the sunniest month of the year my inverter took a dive and I didn’t realize it had been malfunctioning for weeks until I got my bill, which was 10x higher than normal. It would have been great if the SunPower system could have sent an email alerting me to something going wrong.

Our solar system was installed approximately 5 years ago. It has performed satisfactorily --except for communication with the converter. Technicians had repaired that several times --and their work finally had been successful until one month ago, early October. Since then I called Sunpower, November 5, was told they contacted Sunpower maintenance November 8 (that took 3 days!), then told that I should expect a call from maintenance in 7-10 more business days, at which time I expect we can arrange a service appointment.
This is an awful long time to wait to receive a simple courtesy call only then setting a maintenance appointment sometime in the unidentified future. Meanwhile, we have no service for how long--2-3-4 weeks? This is unacceptable. We paid more than $20000 for our system -- and Sunpower cannot even return a call only to schedule a maintenance appointment within a reasonable couple days. We intend to install a solar system at our office. We'll use a different provider.

We have had our system running into it's 3rd year. The first 2 years was ok, but then when one of the inverters broke down it's when cracks started to show with SunPower solar. It took a looong time for them to get back to us after reporting it with them and for the contractor to get back to us, 3 weeks for be exact. Right into the hot months of the CA heat. Needless to say our Edison bill went through the roof with little end in sight. Took a LOT of calling and nagging for them to finally set up an appointment which would take another 3 weeks of a system that was in limbo.
Also, how cheap can you guys be by importing the phone call services overseas to the poor Filipino workers who have to put up with our performance-based population? I bet they get paid peanuts whilst your executives raking in the $$$? If you fail to make your payments on a faulty system they can and will take you (Customer) to court with LITTLE to NO Consequences on their shoulders. They will give you the runaround for as long as possible. We're fighting to get any form of reimbursement from them, it may take 6 months before we even get anything, if anything.
Save yourselves the hassle folks, go elsewhere and make sure the company you go with offers you a solid reimbursement program should your system go down. Go to a company who cares about you and their products long after your system has been installed. It a ** nightmare working with these people (if you can call them that).

I called Westhaven Solar who came out to hook their computer up to the PV5S monitor box. They spent 2 hours restarting the system and calling into SunPower for advice. They never were able to access the equipment and had to leave as they could not tell which micro-inverters had a problem. About 2 months later, yup 2 months they called and said 2 micro-inverters were out and they had to get permission from SunPower to get them replaced.
The crew showed up about a month later (Now August) without the right equipment and staff to do the replacement and had to come back a week later. After 2 hours replacing 2 inverters, they only brought 1 ladder, and my roof is steep, they replaced them. Once again they hooked their computer up to the PV5S and could not connect, they called SunPower and they had them shut off the monitor at least 3 times during the next hour and a half. They were never able access the equipment and were not able to commission the 2 new micro-inverters.
I called Westhaven, who called SunPower and SunPower told them they could not access my system, so they had me remove in "plug in" communications box which I did. I called Westhaven and they finally told me that they were at a point where only SunPower could either replace the PVS5X Box or send someone to verify the box was not operating properly. They told me they had a call in to SunPower to check it out...
So we started calling Sunpower. October 24th, 2018 talked to Ralph who said SunPower would bring in a 3rd party to check it out. Ralph said they use Sun Systems and that we should know within 24 hours. On October 25th, 2018 (24 hours later) we talked to Joanna who said she would send an email to Sun Systems to expedite the process. October 29th, 2018 Red light on PV5S unit, called SunPower. They made us cycle the box off for 5 minutes. Then the person proceeded to tell us that someone came out and fixed the problem. Unless they are into breaking and entering they had no access to the PVS5X box in my garage. We told the person that 24th was the day you said you would send a 3rd party person out... They also said that they would have to replace all the microinverters?
November 5th, 2018 call I was told that Sun Systems was instructed by SunPower to come out and replace all the micro inverters, but was waiting for a work order. November 7th, 2018 call Sunpower said they instructed Sun Systems to do the work but had not heard back from them. We call Andrew at Sun Systems who said SunPower sent an order to replace the inverters, then a 2nd email canceling the order, and to make it more confusing sent an new email authorizing the repair without a work order. Andrew made a request that SunPower contact us within 24-48 hours.
November 8th, 2018 Called and talked to Bianca. We asked why they had to replace all the micro-inverters when 2 had been done but the monitoring system has not been working and there was no way to commission the 2 from months ago. She told us that there was only an order for 2 micro-inverters. So I tell her those were replaced in September. It seems every conversation, work order, and conversation was lost...
November 9th, 2018 talked to Randel who was not able get the proper info and passed me Ralph in Technical support who said they don't trust the installers and are ordering monitoring all new microinverters. And should be in no later than November 23rd. They said they were ordered on Nov 8th. They were supposedly ordered on October 24th which would have been the 2 weeks they just quoted me again. So now I still feel that they are just telling me this to get me off the phone. I am seriously thinking about taking them to court.
I would like to apologize for all of the confusion this has caused. We are currently waiting for the delivery of your micro inverters. Once we have confirmed they are delivered you will be contacted to set up an install date. I will make contact with the dealer today to confirm the estimated delivery date and give you a call by Nov 15th with a more detailed update.

We’ve had our SunPower system for a little bit over a year now and we are super pleased with it! We had recently bought a new house which had air conditioning, a hot tub and a pool. Though we were super excited about all these new features, we also were very aware that we would be using a lot more energy and it would increase our PG&E bills. Having solar made our summer much more enjoyable because we could relax and enjoy! Thanks Sun Power!
Reviewed Nov. 7, 2018
SunPower was one of the companies that was highly recommended. We liked the amount of money that it could save over time. Because of the size of the house my energy bills were pretty high. It seemed to be good in the beginning, but at this point, it doesn’t seem to. It’s like you’ve reaped the benefits in the beginning and now it’s all just kind of the way it is. It's just as expensive as it was before.
I contacted customer service because there was a problem with our system. It was pretty good from the point that they helped me fix that because we had to reboot the system. And I said, “Well, could that have been the problem, the reason why my true-up at the end of the year was so high? Every year it seems to go up $1,000 more. What’s that? How is this happening? Maybe the system wasn’t running right?” And of course, they said they were doing their research and of course, I expected the answer to be that it’s not the system’s fault, and in fact, it wasn't. Nobody came out, nobody walked it, nobody checked it, nobody has done anything. They did whatever test they ran from wherever they were at and that was sufficient.
Every solar company told me, “Oh, we can add more solar panels. You shouldn’t be paying anything. There should be no screw up.” I talked to PG&E and they didn’t seem to side with any of the solar companies. They said, “I guess you could add more panels if you wanted to, but it won’t make a difference,” so, I never added more panels or decreased panels. I have kept it the same and the rates kept going up.
We apologize for the experience you had with us. We'd really like to look into this further. Your account information will be sent over to an escalation specialist and you will be contacted within 24 hours.

After researching all the products on the market it was an easy decision to go solar with the best manufacturer installed by the best solar company (Sun Solar). I thought getting solar energy services was the right thing to do. It was for environmental reasons and ultimately, in the long term, it could save money. We’ve had some bumps along the way, but now, I’m satisfied. Enrolling with them was straightforward. It was a complex process just because of permits and state regs, but they did everything and just told me the paper I have to sign. So, it was a smooth process. My interaction with the customer service team was positive, even during the appointment.
I had some technical issues. We upgraded the array. We added another five panels and after that, we had intermittent generation which took about six or eight months to fix, and resulted in months where I went without any generation. We got an arc fault detected on the inverter. I called their support team and they were saying it was sporadic. I was having to reset the inverter almost every day. It would seem to stabilize and then I would forget about it. Then I’d go look again and realize I haven’t been generating any power for months. It took an inordinate amount of time to fix the problem. So, it finally got escalated to the response guy who talked to me about the challenge. They sent their partner out a couple of times who eventually found a badly made connector which had actually been causing an arc. He remade all the connectors and from then it was fine.
The monitoring system should send an alert rather than relying on the consumer having to log in every day which is what I do. I have an app on my phone, but I shouldn’t need to login to check generation. I would expect that they’re monitoring the system. They ought to be able to send an alert to the user to say, “Hey, your array has gone out,” and then you can deal with it. Rather than doing as I did which I’d be traveling and whenever I traveled, the day I left home was the day that the thing would fail. And that would happen two or three times that way. SunPower wrote me a check for about half of the power that I didn’t generate, that I had to buy then from PG&E. It was a bit of a painful process. But in the end, they came through and made it good. So far, I’m very happy with what it’s doing and that they’re generating power. I would recommend them.
Thank you, Andrew, for this well-thought-out feedback. While it's unfortunate that you ended up being among a small number of customers with this technical issue, I'm glad that we compensated you to your satisfaction, and we appreciate this vote of confidence!

I decided I wanted solar and did my research and found that I wanted SunPower solar. I called, they came out to my new house that was 4 times as big and 4 states away from my previous home. They decided 30 panels would cover my electrical needs, I bit off because they are the experts. My lease came out to $2400 a year, after 1 year though I get a bill from electric company saying I owe them $1000 more. Now my problem is I called SunPower to discuss this, I told them, "Hey I understand it's not exact science on how to determine how many panels I should need, so owing a little is fine but you guys undersold me by 30%. That's a pretty big margin." My response was my system size was determined by my past usage. I said, "You never ask me for past electric Bills because it was 4 states over and my house was 4 times smaller."
Then I was told that I used too much electricity and I should cut back. I said, "Who are you to tell me how much I can and can't use." I offered to pay for more panels to be added to my lease and they said no. They said they are only going to honor what was promised in the lease. I said, "What about the promise SunPower promised me in building a system to cover my electric needs," they told me goodbye. I would and will not ever recommend SunPower to anyone even someone I hate. I would have never went through them if I knew that their mistake of undersizing my system without compromising on a solution was going to happen. But that knowledge is on whoever is reading this and I think you will be treated better and spend your hard earned money elsewhere and feel better about it.

I was on the care program which I no longer qualified for. Which would bring my utility bills to a average of $250 a month. So I looked into quality home services and decided to go Solar. I leased the system, the install looks great! I received PTO March 2018 and as of today I only have a $14.59 true-up bill.

Got solar to save money. Arizona Solar Concepts was a great company to do the install. Fast and friendly install. Looks great and I didn't have to do anything. I requested a custom install with inverter in the garage and they did it! Would highly recommend.

I went solar in order to save money. I’m an investment minded person, and because SunPower panels degrade the least amount of any panel, I feel very secure with my investment. The warranties also gave me peace of mind that if I have a problem I’m going to be taken care of.
Hi James, Great point about the degradation rate. Many folks don't realize that this means SunPower panels will ultimately make more power over time than conventional panels. Thanks for choosing SunPower!

Best product in the world and hands down the best warranty in the industry. No other solar manufacturers warranty even come close to SunPower's 25/25/25 "bumper to bumper warranty." My SunPower Dealer, Streamline Solar Power did an awesome job, great install from start to finish. Thank you SunPower and Streamline Solar!

I've already saved $660.00 my first year with my SunPower solar system. My lease payment and utility bill combined is around $60 a month LESS than my utility old bill without the solar!! It's maintenance free, looks awesome, great for the environment, and it's saving me hundreds of dollars. I'm super happy I went with SunPower.

We’ve been very happy with our SunPower solar system. It was designed to meet our electricity demands and it has exceeded our expectations. The installation looks great and the process with Ambrose Solar was amazing. The SunPower system gives us the ability to see what we produce and how much electricity we use which helps us manage our electricity consumption throughout the year. I highly recommend Ambrose Solar and SunPower if you are considering solar for your home. Ambrose Solar went above and beyond and we couldn’t be happier with our decision to go solar with Ambrose and SunPower.
Thank you Ian! We love to hear good things about our solar partners! Congrats on helping to change how our world is powered.

We have had our SunPower system for only two years. In the past few months, we've noticed a significant decrease in our solar production. Apparently, one of our micro-converters has already malfunctioned. Numerous emails have been sent over the past month to resolve the issue. We've received zero response from SunPower; not even acknowledgment that our complaint has been received. Various executives such as Jo ** and Ken ** have even been copied on our emails to no avail. Severely disappointed in the non-existent customer service from a supposed 'highly reputable' company.
Hello Fatima, I'm sorry to hear that you've had trouble reaching us. That's unacceptable, and we'd like to make it right. I see we have a case number associated with your inquiries (01414766) so I'll ask the customer service team to get back to you as soon as possible with an update.

WARNING WARNING WARNING! I researched both the installer (Semper Solaris) as well as the manufacturer before purchasing my LESS THAN 2 YEAR OLD SYSTEM. Semper Solaris (SS) told me I could call them for any problems. In July of this year I thought my production was down and asked to look into it and never heard back. On Oct 8, I noted my production was down ABOUT 40%! Again contacted SS asking for them to look into it. No response. On Oct 12 I tried a third time and this time SS copied me on emails they sent that day to SUNPOWER (SP) about my problem. AND I sent 3 separate emails to SP MYSELF - one to customer support, one to technical support and one to Jocelyn ** based on info Semper Solaris provided. NOT ONE of those emails was ever acknowledged!
So THEN I did an internet search and found that in about the last 2 to 3 months - (basically involving August/Sept/Oct) the number of complaints and bad ratings at the Better Business Bureau, consumeraffairs.com, and even here on Yelp had gone WAY UP. And my personal experience has since echoed many of these complaints. On Oct 16 I called SUNPOWER directly AND my phone shows the call lasted over 1 hour and 14 minutes with most of that ON HOLD - in fact, although I was placed on hold multiple times, one stretch LASTED 37 minutes! I was told they had replied to my emails but used an incorrect email address? Gross incompetence or lie? Email clients AUTOMATICALLY enter the return address as we all know!
And I was still given the run-around about when my system would be repaired. First they were going to have to replace equipment so they could MONITOR my system for a while to judge the problem. I complained to Semper Solaris (SS) who I was under the belief would be servicing my system since THEY HAD INSTALLED IT, and was told they were no longer ALLOWED to service the equipment and had been warned that doing so would VOID my 25 year warranty! AND they were getting swamped with complaints about SUNPOWER for who they are installers - how about that!?
I believe strongly that this likely represents SUNPOWER RUNNING INTO AN UNEXPECTED WIDESPREAD EQUIPMENT PROBLEM WITH THEIR OWN PRODUCT AND NOT WANTING TO PAY Semper Solaris to help with the repairs - AND AT MY EXPENSE in that until it is repaired, I am wasting money going to SDGE in having to use power from the grid instead of my OWN solar power.
AND GET THIS - I have learned as a home and business owner over 35 years that occasionally it is best to 'go to the top'. In the maybe 5 times I have done that over 3 decades, involving an executive office has ALWAYS gotten at a minimum a polite/caring sounding acknowledgment. I emailed the office of Tom Werner CEO ** and his office did NOT EVEN HAVE ENOUGH CLASS TO RESPOND! So you CANNOT count on product reliability NOR service from this company. It is NOW Oct 22 and I've been given no further information about repair to my system - I'll continue to update this if/when repair happens.
Hi Jim,
We’re sorry to hear of your less than satisfactory experience with SunPower and our authorized dealer Semper Solaris, and hope you will accept our sincerest apologies.
We truly value our customers and I would like to personally assist you with making things right. I have sent you a private message and look forward to speaking with you soon.

The system worked as advertised for the first 4 years, but then we had a couple of months of lower than expected production from the 18 solar panels, and it took over three weeks for a technician to arrive, and troubleshoot the problem. He was only interested in checking the monitoring system, and could not figure out why the system was underperforming. Customers need to understand what happens when their equipment needs support and maintenance. The customer service number always seems to have unusually high call volume. It took 10 business days for a scheduler to contact me about scheduling a site visit. It took another week to get someone to show up. Then the technician could only troubleshoot the monitoring system, and ignored the original issue of higher than expected electric bills.
Hello Michael, We're sorry you couldn't get the information you needed during the trouble-shooting process. I have alerted the customer service team about your case, and you should expect to hear from them soon.

My electricity bills kept going up so I looked into solar energy services and I've done it twice. I got SunPower through a company called Baker Electric, which is also an installer for them. SunPower was a good option at the time and so I had them on my old house 6 years ago. Enrolling with them was extremely easy and having solar energy services has been great. So far, it is a very seamless effort. I got a smaller unit than I should've made, but it was my fault. Overall, SunPower is a good way to go.

I bought a home with a standard efficiency panel and soon thereafter I replaced it with a SunPower system. I was able to reduce the roof footprint while at the same time increase the amount of power on my roof. I now have less panels but make more energy every day. So glad I had a chance to upgrade to a SunPower system!!!
Hi Mitch, Thanks for sharing your solar story. It's a great example of the benefits of choosing a high efficiency panel.

The solar product itself is awesome and operating better than I expected. The app is still a little confusing to me. I understand what I am producing but I don't seem to get an accurate reading of what I am actually using out what is being produced. The particular company that did the install was not the greatest with their attentiveness to detail and keeping me informed of the process. The sales person was excellent and did his best to go above and beyond my needs but it seemed that his company was not supporting him and me. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the product and will definitely recommend this to others (but not recommend the particular installer I used.)

We I installed 14 kW of SunPower 350 black modules on our new home. They look awesome and are working really well. It’s great to see on the monitoring how early they wake up and start working and how late they continue to work. We installed the system in May and so far we are 120% solar. Hoping for Net zero, but since it’s new construction we had to guess on the system size. So far so good... Thank you True South Solar here in Ashland, Oregon for the perfect installation experience and SunPower were such a good looking and efficient system! I may be biased, but I highly recommend both of them!!
