They charge outrageous and unfair premiums and will make you fight tooth and nail to cover even the most basic of prescription medication. Overall they are just another greedy run of the mill trash insurance.

They charge you for prescriptions that they send to the wrong address. We've tried to delay shipments (as they suggest) when moving, but they send the prescriptions anyway, and to your former address. Then, with you not being able to get your medications, they charge you for their mistake. Of course, when you try to talk to them, they insist that you did not change your address in time (I changed it a week before they sent it AND I spoke with one of their representatives - you have to keep pushing zero to actually talk to a person - on April 17th. That is when I double checked that they had the new address.) and say you are obligated for the payment. My husband changed his address online and then had his prescription delayed. They sent it to our old address in another state. And, of course, they want him to pay for their mistake.

Mass confusion. I went to process new prescriptions and on hold 60 minutes. First they said I had a duplicate order. Then they said I had 2 insurances and WellCare/Express Scripts not primary. I still don’t have my medications. And no one will call the customer. You have to call and get transferred to all the wrong departments. Not customer focused. The reps spend a lot of time apologizing and placing you on hold. A major exercise in frustration for my first experience with Medicare part D. I will not renew with them. Stay away!!

Tried using Express Scripts for the first time nine years ago and they sent my daughter's controlled prescription to our old house which we had never use this address or ever used Express Scripts service. Try again to use Express Scripts three months ago. My order was OK but I had to upgrade to overnight shipping to get my medicine that they sat on for seven days. Tried to use Express Scripts last Friday, once again, my order sat in processing for the last five days, but they charge my credit card the very next day. When I called in I talked to the rudest and most condescending customer service person in the world. The supervisor that I requested to speak to was very nice and was able to help me cancel my order. Now I have to wait 48hrs for my prescriptions to be released and to add insult to injury I am out of some of my heart and diabetes medication. I will never use Express Scripts again and I hope you don’t.

I spent 7 hours today on my only day off trying to figure out why they refused to send my meds. They claim that they have been charging me a small fee for the past 5 months and that's why I owe them and why they won't mail my antidepressants. I have 2 insurance companies and they are one then my other should cover any leftovers. Well nobody will tell you this but they won't accept a second insurer. So now I owe them all this money suddenly.
To make matters worse when I log into my account it doesn't say anything that support what they are saying and while the dollar amount is the same in both cases, one is for a bunch of accrued charges over time, my account merely says I was charged for 4 medications about 8 weeks ago and that's why I owe and why my account is frozen. So now I have to cancel them and also wait a week for them to snail mail me a bill assuming they send it today, which I will then need to submit to my other insurer to get it paid which will take weeks so I am going back to the pharmacy. I don't think I'm the only person unhappy with this service. Way not awesome.

I've never been crazy about Express Scripts but they have been OK for the last several years as the required online pharmacy from the company I work for. But recently I received a notice that a valid script was simply canceled by Express Scripts due to product shortages. This script wasn't new, it was just a refill request I made and while I understand about shortages (**) it doesn't seem legal/right to me that they simply canceled the script instead of just putting it on backorder in queue order for when I submitted it.
When I called them, they only said that I would have to call back frequently (daily?) to see if it was in stock and then they would have to manually restart my script. How is this allowed that they can do this is such an unfair and ridiculous manner? I don't expect miracles when there are nationwide shortages but to force me to waste my time constantly calling (not even an online way to check the status) instead of a queue process or a daily notification from them.. Really? This isn't some damn concert I'm trying to get tickets for or a lottery I'm trying to win, just a refill of my current med that they've refilled in the past.

I manage the prescriptions for both of my parents who have TRICARE benefits due to my dad’s career military service. I cannot believe how awful this company is. They must have terrible software because I have to repeat everything over and over over. They’ll say they removed previous insurance benefit company, but the next time I call it is still attached. Mind you the company has not been used in nearly 20 years. They will say they have earmarked a prescription for automatic refill, but when I call back, it is not marked for automatic refill. Rather than communicate effectively with members, we find out when we go to pick up prescriptions at the local pharmacy that we are blackmailed into using the mail away pharmacy. By blackmail I mean the prescription is over $5000 if we purchase it at the local pharmacy but $45 if we purchase it through the mail away pharmacy.
They blame the doctor for not sending prescriptions over when I have personally witnessed the doctor sending the prescriptions. They forced us to change my mother’s insulin to mail away, failing to realize that they didn’t have any of it. They forced us to change my mother’s insulin to mail away, failing to realize that they didn’t have any of it. Not only that, they did not notify us for three full weeks that they did not have any And so my mother had to go without her insulin for a while until we could get more. The only good thing about them is that they answer the phone fairly quickly and customer care advocates are kind and polite. But the process is tedious and takes a minimum of 45 minutes each time. So far on my current problem, I have called them three separate occasions, trying to get it resolved and spent 45 minutes to an hour each time.
If I want to get a waiver on the cost to get 14 day supply at a local pharmacy because they did not get the medication to us, I have to give all of the information to the next person I talk to again because they have to change agents to a customer service agent. I can’t believe that our military veterans have such a poor level of service after the sacrifices day, and their families made in service to our country. Please, find a new prescription service provider! I don’t have three hours a week to spend on the phone just trying to get something that should be so simple.

This is the pharmacy associated with my employer supplied insurance but I definitely don't recommend them. They tell you one thing one day and something different the next. They seem incompetent and unable to assist customers. It is going on three weeks and I still don't have my prescription. I called my insurance provider to see if a specific medication was covered and they referred me to Express Scripts. I called Express Scripts who told me the medication was covered for both a 30 day supply and a 90 day supply and they provided the costs.
My doctor sent the prescription to Express Scripts and, first they denied it because they needed a pre-authorization, then, once my doctor provided the pre auth, Express Scripts denied my subscription stating they only filed a 90 day supply and I would need to go through my local pharmacy for a 30 day supply. My doctor then sent a 90 day supply to them and now they have denied that claiming my provider only covers a 30 day supply. I have been given incomplete and inaccurate information by multiple Express Scripts representatives. I will NEVER use them again and will pay the higher price by going through my local pharmacy.

So let's tackle each item in the title. Incompetent. There is no notification when there is a problem on their end. Can't process a payment? Up to you to follow up. Can't reverse a charge. You do their job. Call to straighten an order? Fix some issues and cause new ones. The management clearly does inadequate training and poor workflow scripts. They will do the very least and you have to push them to dig into a problem. Misleading. Delivery dates, charges, you name it.
Possibly corrupt? When I asked to cancel an order they were delaying (how can an order be "in process" and yet not ship for last least two weeks with one day delivery?). They were going to do a credit. Wrong answer. Reiterated a refund. Ok, it' take up to 120 days. What? Now you're holding the money for the interest, and I get stuck with monthly interest and a hold. And suddenly they can reverse the charge today. How does that make sense? Also, they wanted to charge $26 for expedited delivery for a delayed order... Then magically it's free. The savings are almost at a scam level once you factor in the various questionable service and actions.

Tonight I invested 30 minutes to pay a bill of $1.57. The automated system is a joke. Over and over agin you give your information and it doesn't hear it or wants it repeated or wants it confirmed, finally you get a person and you do it all over again. After I did that, he asked me to hold, I think he sent the call back in due because another customer service person picked up and acted like it was a new call and we started the process all over again. When I told her this was the third round of verifications, she suddenly acted like she couldn't hear me, and kept asking, "can you hear me?" I said yes many times and finally hung up on her game.
I called back and after round one with the automated system got another person. She just couldn't seem to find my account, even with the account #, name, address etc. Finally she found me with the prescription #. I paid the bill and asked to be connected to the survey. Yep, you guessed it, she disconnected the call. If you are not frustrated when you call them, you will be by the time you are able to pay your bill or ask your question. If there was a rating in the negative column, they would land squarely there. Express Scripts you need talent, friendly and efficient customer service people and obviously some leadership that cares enough to train them. You are so substandard to deal with.

Worst company ever to have to deal with. The prescriptions sent in never ever seem to be correct. There is always, and I mean always an issue. I can't tell you how many times they tell me, "I waiting to hear from your doctor". I call the doctor's office and they haven't received any faxes or calls. It takes so long to have them sent out. I have to be the go-between to have the doctor fax the information they need, and let me tell you if it is one word off how they want it worded they will deny it. I feel bad for my doctor, we both cringe whenever I need a renewal. I never had any of these issues when using my local pharmacy. Trust me, if I didn't have to use them because of my insurance I would not.

Then, a few weeks later, lo and behold, Express Scripts sends me an email that they need authorization to fill a new prescription. My military hospital is 6 miles away, I don't want it mailed to me! So I call to cancel that prescription and was told it was taken care of. A few days later, bang! My prescription is enroute by mail and I'm going have to pay $38. I can't return it, cancel it, nothing! I want ES out of my life forever!

Basically their computerized system can handle simple problems that fit their FAQs. The problem is that our account is cancelled because we changed our insurance. They should be able to transfer the Rx to the new pharmacy. They demand the new pharmacy call them, but when the new pharmacy calls Express Scripts they tell the new pharmacy that we don't exist in their records. This has been going on for over one week. Not having to go through Express Scripts is becoming something of a status symbol, for which people will be willing to pay money. They have become the "Yugo" of pharmacy services. To be fair there may be worse services out there that I haven't yet encountered.

My husband and I have only been using Express Scripts for two months-AND I HAVE SPENT THE MAJORITY OF MY FREE TIME IN THOSE TWO MONTHS TO CLEAN UP THEIR MESSES. My husband and I sent in our two NEW scripts-which they said would take 5/7 days to process AND THEN shipment would be an extra 3/4-both scripts were cancelled without our knowledge. We both called to see why, and just like EVERY time we call-there’s ALWAYS a different story with every different person we speak to. Through MANY chats with supervisors over many days, my husband's 90-day script was finally shipped overnight-but took three days to get here and he had already run out of meds so had to get a temp script to cover what Express Scripts couldn’t provide because of all the run around.
My own script that had been cancelled, was finally being processed once again, however, even though my husband and I are obviously under the same plan, they could not approve a 90-day script for me, so my doctor had to resend a 30-day. Once again, after many days of just sitting and being “processed” and now out of medication-I called to follow up and ES said I HAD PUT A HOLD ON MY OWN MEDICATION. WRONG, I had no idea how I could’ve even done this, and they said they would do me a courtesy and put it back in process which was now going to delay shipping even longer because they were basically starting from scratch.
After many calls and MYSELF advocating to make sure THEIR process is going smoothly-I finally revived my meds. Here we are, though, this month, my script-which was supposed to be refilled beginning of April, actually was never filled until the 18th. ONCE AGAIN after many calls – most recent last week where the lady I spoke with told me it had been delayed due to needing more “information from my doctor”-well, spoke with my doctor and she’d NEVER been contacted once. The supervisor I spoke with said that she would do me a courtesy and overnight because I was without medication. A courtesy??? How about you do me a courtesy and fill the script when sent in, communication with a customer when delayed, then shipped in a timely manner so we’re not going without.
Well, here we are again, my overnight shipment will not be here until next week, and I absolutely DREAD doing this another month. Supervisors have told me several times that if there is anything wrong with the intake, process of medication, meds out of stock, what have you-I would be notified within 24 hours. Never ever have I ever been notified about any problems or issues, I ALWAYS have to do MY due diligence to see they’re doing their job. Once again, I am without medications, tired of spending all of MY time making sure everything is on the up and up and the job is being done. Absolute SCAM, and I can’t believe someone allows a business to continue running this way! I’d give ZERO stars if able.

My doctor prescribed a medication for me that was not available. Express Scripts put that medication hold, calling it "stopped" on their website. I called to check on it a few days later, and it was still unavailable. Fast forward 9 days later, I go back to the website to check on the status of this med, and it is still stopped. So I speak with a rep. The rep says it is now available. I want to know why it hasn't been filled then? He sends me to another rep. She said yes it is available, let me get you to a customer care rep (I think that's what she called it)...wait about 5 mins and someone comes on the line and says let me check this med. She says yes it is available....Am I losing my mind? No. The med came available and they didn't fill it. So she proceeds to put the med thru for processing.
I ask how long, and she says 2 to 3 days then however long for shipping. I ask including the weekend? She says no, only business days. So I say so it should ship maybe Tuesday or Wednesday? (today is Friday) She says, no...my mistake up to 5 days for processing. OMG!!!! Then I ask the obvious, why wasn't this med filled when it became available? She tells me I would have to call to have it processed once it is stopped. HOW incompetent can a company be and still be in business? Taking Medicare/Medicaid taxpayer money?
Mind you I had a prescription for the same med at a lower dose and they didn't have that either, so I had the local pharmacy call to have it transferred and they told the pharmacist they didn't have a prescription for me for that drug. I called them back and asked what was going on and they didn't know why that had happened. The pharmacist called a second time and they kept her on hold for 25 minutes, she had to hang up. I then called them back a third time and they had a "specialist" call the pharmacy to transfer the prescription. But even then they did it wrong, it was only for 1 month, not the 2 that was prescribed. AND the other month magically disappeared from their website. All I can say is someone should sue these people, they are really doing a BAAAAD job.

If I had any other choice, I would never use this company again. They shipped a 90-day supply of medication via DHL, who lost it in shipping. First Express Scripts refused to mark it lost, saying it was only delayed. It's been over 3 weeks since it shipped, and the tracking info hasn't updated in almost that long. Even DHL says it's lost. Finally got someone to mark it as lost, but they need a new script from my Dr to replace it. Fine, I go through the hoops for that, but now they want almost $1000 to ship the new order. I point out I already paid a co-pay of almost $300 for the first order that we all now agree is lost, so why do I need to pay 3x that for a replacement? They agree that shouldn't be necessary and say they'll waive it, look for an update in 24 hours.
I'm the meantime, I'm completely out of this med. My doctor calls in a 10 day refill to bridge, the pharmacy calls the number ES gave me for them to call, and ES tells them I need to call a different number - again. Call #5. I do, and they fix that party, but then tell me I owe $1000 before they'll ship the 90 day refill. They claim there is no record that I called the day before, and no record of any fee being waived. Again, I ask why I need to pay $1000 for a med I can get at any local pharmacy for $150-$450 without insurance? No answer to that. They refuse to ship the replacement, and I'm refusing to give them $1000 for meds I could get locally *without insurance* for $150. I honestly don't know what to do next, and I don't expect this review to make a difference, I just hope I can prevent someone else from going through this same thing. DO NOT use them if you have a choice. Unfortunately, I do not.

I had an incredibly poor experience with Express Scripts. I ordered my necessary diabetes supplies three weeks ago, but the service was a disaster from the start. They didn’t fulfill my order on time, and trying to get an explanation was a runaround with multiple long unhelpful calls. When I finally reached a supervisor, her response was not only dismissive but also rude. She incorrectly informed me that my plan and group number changed and that the strips were no longer covered, contradicting the information on my insurance card. She couldn't provide any viable alternatives or confirm whether the related glucose monitors were covered, showing a zero knowledge.
After four frustrating calls, another supervisor eventually resolved the issue which I'm about to see as I still have not received my order nor it was shipped, but this ordeal has seriously made me question the competence of the initial staff I dealt with. The first supervisor's ignorance and lack of professionalism were shocking. This experience really highlights serious flaws in their service and staff training. My blood pressure is sky high and my blood is boiling. Every week there’s a delay, and for something I’ve already taken care of. No one contacts me to let know, either. I’ve been expecting my medicine for weeks and it still hasn’t even been processed. I’ve spoken to so many people now, I’ve lost count and no one can actually tell me why my order won’t go out. I have a zero balance. I’ve confirmed my address multiple times. I’m down to 2 days worth now.
Today’s “representative” told me to call my local Walgreens and have them call Express Scripts to transfer it. They refused to just call Walgreens for me, but it was moot anyway. New York law prohibits transferring a prescription that has not yet been filled. But Express Scripts won’t fill it and no one can tell me why. Around and around we go. Looks like I’ll have to try to reach my doctor and have a new prescription called in to Walgreens. I’ll likely have to pay out-of-pocket. That should be easy and expeditious, right? *Sigh* At least I don’t have mental health problems… Well, at least I’m taking medication for it… Well…

They just don't seem to care to reach out to a diabetic to tell her that she is not going to receive her meds! How do they run out of stock of medicines so frequently anyway? Are all mail-in pharmacies so BAD?

I am being forced off of my diabetic medication because Express Scripts has removed something called an E-Voucher from my account. They have just made the decision not to accept them any longer. My medication went from $25.00 per month to $965.00 per month. With a manufacturer's coupon I can get it down to $700.00 a month. As of today I am out of my prescription and do not have the ability to acquire any more. I have talked to customer service and an supervisor at Express Scripts. They all had the same response, "sorry".

Twelve days to get a prescription filled, and this isn't the first time. I only use them because my insurance company says I have to if I want 90-day prescriptions. 90% of the time, you have to call and follow up, that's after using the app or online portal. What a waste of time. And then they use DHL who puts into the USPS hands... who knows when that will deliver. If you have a choice I would choose different.

I’ve used Express Scripts because it was linked through my insurance. While it was convenient, I’ve noticed the prices are way higher, even though it is linked through my insurance company. Additionally the last few times I’ve ordered I’ve had nothing but problems. When you try to call, it takes a good five minutes to even get the automated response to get you to a person, I think it tries to get you so frustrated that you will hang up. Every time I finally get to a representative they could never help me and have to send me to some other department or do something and then tell me I need to call back. It should not be difficult to get a prescription filled. Going to use RX and a local pharmacy from now on

Just the absolute worst. If you can, avoid this company. It's been 6 weeks trying to get a prescription refill. They said my doctor hasn't submitted the prescription; though they submitted 5 times. Then they said my address is wrong; it wasn't. Then they canceled my order because my doctor's office said I wasn't a patient; they didn't. Unclear if this is an actual pharmacy or a scam. Why can't I rate zero stars? When you first call, the automated system is so bad that it hears itself talking and continuously cuts off. When you ask for an operator, it hangs up on you. When I finally got someone on the phone, she was mumbling and got frustrated with me because I could not understand what she was saying. When I asked about a med that I was looking at on the screen, she could not see what I was seeing (in my list of available meds) so she was useless. Every time I need meds from Express Scripts, I have an issue. Every. Single. Time.

I have dealt with these Bozos for years. Lately it seems they have gotten worse. They weren't any good to start with. Most recently they have sent emails saying my scripts were on the way, and the next day I get one saying it is on hold. I call and the damn automated system can't recognize what I say. Finally it tries to connect me with a human. After 10 minutes on hold I get a nice lady to help me. After waiting 10 minutes she finds what she needs and says it is on hold. Then she says she must talk to a technician. Finally she said it is released for shipping. Wasted ~12 minutes of an old man's life. This is a common occurrence with this Company.
I have Cigna part D Medicare and I am required to go to these folks. Being a type 2 diabetic my scripts are NEEDED on TIME! Looking elsewhere next open season. Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs have better pricing on some of my scripts with no insurance. The lady I talked to was very apologetic, I explained not her fault but the Company is weak!

Original Review: April 12, 2024
Updated on 07/11/2024: Updating a previous review and changing previous rating from 1 to 3 stars. Two reasons for this. First, a lot depends on the customer service agent(s) who help you. Some do nothing and give no useful information; however, I can now report that I have spoken to some excellent agents who explained things well and took exceptional steps to help me solve a problem.
Second reason: With regard to delays in processing and shipping orders, I have come to understand that there are many variables that pharmacies, including Express Scripts, cannot control. Especially when ordering controlled substances, you really need to insist that your doctor take into account the legal constraints specific to your state that affect processing and shipping times. My only complaint with Express Scripts at this point is that, again, customer service ranges from the worst to the best I've ever experienced with an online company, so there's an element of randomness involved in obtaining information and managing orders. Bottom line: Know the processing times, plan ahead, anticipate delays, and keep your prescribing doctors informed. Apart from delay issues, the underlying service is quite good.
Original Review: Great business model in theory, but it breaks down in ways that make the service unusable. What happens if there's a delay in processing a prescription order? The site is supposed to warn you that your prescription won't be filled on time, but this does NOT happen, so you won't know there's a problem until you infer this yourself, which is likely too late to get your medication on time. Moreover, they won't tell you the reason for the delay. This is hugely important to know in some circumstances, e.g. in the case of a national shortage, so that you can make alternative plans in the future. Basically you have no idea if or when your meds will arrive on time or late, so if your prescriptions are urgent, then it's too risky to use this service.

Express Scripts canceled my prescription order on March 11, 2024. Despite having filled this medication before, I was told that I needed prior authorization. My doctor's office sent in two prior authorizations and called to confirm that all was in good order with insurance. I conducted a three-way call with insurance and Express Scripts where I was told that all was in good order and that the prescription order would ship. The order was then rejected again for prior authorization. Repeatedly, during the last 8 phone calls I've made in 30 days, l have been told that the issue was either escalated or resolved, likely to get me off the phone and preserve the agent's "call handle time" which is most likely a highly weighted measure of their performance at the company. The level of care or concern for a patient that has been without meds for over a month is nonexistent.

The whole network of Express Scripts is designed to keep them in control of your medications so they continue to be recipient of your money. My doctor accidentally sent the prescription for pain medication to them instead of my local pharmacy which Express scripts said when I called, "That's no problem. Give your pharmacist the 800-922-1557 number to call and we can transfer it immediately." The pharmacist called them and when the pharmacist got back to me, was told "we don't know what the patient is talking about. This prescription is in process and cannot be changed. It couldn't be delivered for more than a 14 days." I called them back and said, "If it can't be delivered for more than a week, and two days, why can't it be halted and transferred immediately?" Again, when I called the pharmacist number, Victoria kept replying, (or not talking at all), "I get you." But never once offered a reason or a solution.
I could tell she was talking to someone else because she didn't answer me at all. Then the moment I said, "Are you there?" She quickly said, "Yes, I'm here." There should be a federal investigation into their practices. I'm having the doctor remove Express scripts off my information so prescriptions are NEVER SENT TO THEM AGAIN. No one at Express scripts knows what's going on or why. They are a ticking bomb for a lawsuit (or several) which will destroy lives and they don't care. It's as though they consider collateral damage if that happens and part of doing business. As long as I have a breath left in my body and I have control of my health, I'm going to be proactive and move drug control out of their reach, particularly pain medications as cardiac medications which I need faster and can't transfer once they have the order in their possession.

So consistently every single month I have to call twice to request an expedite and go two weeks minimum without my ADHD meds and the only thing they can suggest is “well, ask your doctor to put in a script at your local pharmacy so you’re not going without your meds”. Trust me, I would be picking them up locally if I had that option. If I don’t go through express scripts I have to pay over $600 for just ONE medication, so calling it in locally isn’t an option. This company is difficult to work with and has recurring issues every time you refill a medication. My medication is paid for by a 3rd party assistance program. It pays every month after the medication is sent. ExpressScripts has selective amnesia every month and pretends they don't know this. I was forced to use the 3rd party assistance program by my insurance. After I ordered the last refill, I was unable to get my medication for over 12 days, during which time I ran out. ExpressScripts never messaged me or let me know there was a billing issue so I could take care of it before I ran out of medication.
They also pretended, falsely, that they can't see any payments made on my account previously, where they would have seen the 3rd party payments that have come in for the last 6 months. The medication was on autofill, but when we logged in it had been changed. We ordered it again on March 15th and seven days went by and still no medication.
We logged in and the medication said delayed. We weren't given a reason for the delay. We finally called to find out what the issue was and we were not given a reason. We were asked if we needed to know the side effects when off of the medication. The answer was NO, the doctor monitors that. Instead we wanted to know why they were negligent in sending this medication. I say all of this to say we ordered the medication March 15th and did not receive until April 4th, and we only received it April 4th because we called. We were never given an explanation of why they chose to delay the medication. You must do better. I just spoke with a lady in the pre authorization department who was not being empathetic or caring at all. The reason for my call is that my doctor sent the pre authorization form for this year last week while we were on our appointment and she claimed that the pre authorization was triggered by the pharmacy trying to fill my prescription and that my doctor never sent anything. When I asked questions as to what additional information they needed, when was the request sent to my doctor, which it had only been a day since it was sent is there, when I ask if there was a way to get a permanent authorization since I am allergic to ** and that is why I get authorize for **, she gave a cookie cutter or short responses and when I continued to ask questions she would raise her voice.
When I finally called her out on it she stated her voice was the same tone, and I told her no it has not been specially when I have not been rude to her and I closed the call by telling her to remember to be kind to people and disconnecting from her. The truth is, it is very frustrating trying to get these authorizations through, because even when we are being proactive we are met with challenges, and the reason for which I ask for it is simple: I am allergic to the covered medication. That is not something that is going to change, her explanation was that health plans can change and that a medication may no longer be covered and when I told her, that does not apply in my case because the medication has already been taken off the covered list, and since I am allergic, hence the reason for the ** and she just raised her voice and said there could be other reason. So she was not being forthcoming or empathetic.
You are dealing with people not machines, kindness, empathy and respect are paramount in this business. For example, the young man I spoke to before being transferred to the pre-authorization department, his name was Ernest, he was very nice, I could tell he had a smile on his face because it transpired in his tone of voice and he was very helpful and pleasant. You need more people like him answering the phones! On 3/21 I got a notification that one of the orders had shipped to the wrong address. I called immediately to ask what was going on. They said they would reship that prescription to my new address and that because I was now out of my second prescription (which is a vital daily prescription that I need) they would send it to the front of the queue for processing and give me one day shipping.
On 3/27 I got an email that the prescription that had previously shipped to the wrong address had reshipped. I have trouble filling my daughter's ADHD medicine. I called specifically on Thursday, 21 Mar to see if they had it. They did. The DR on Friday sent a script to Express Scripts for **. They denied it as they are out. ** is the generic for **, but they won't fill the ** script sent as they want me to try to fill a script locally for the generic. I am beyond frustrated with this. All I get from Express scripts is for them to be my only medication provider but they seem to find ways to deny medicine.

My child takes a medication generally unavailable locally, so we've had to use Express Scripts. Chronically the company takes more than a week to even begin to fill the prescription, promises to "expedite" on an "emergency" basis -- and then does nothing of the kind. On another occasion, it improperly denied coverage of a needed medication and has ignored my appeal letters. I've had to file a complaint with the Dep't. of Financial Services, which is pending.

Express Scripts has been getting a prescription that's on nationwide shortage, so they're able to do something that my local pharmacy hasn't been able to. However, it's a controlled medication so there are additional steps. Even though it's a long-term prescription, there are so many delays. They specifically said that it would be shipped on 3/21/24 and couldn't be shipped earlier because controls, but then I get a message on 3/26/24 that it's actually been shipped. This is not the first month this has happened. It's been consistent for 3+ months. I'm supposed to be taking this every day, but Express Scripts makes that impossible.

For the third month in a row I have spent a week being lied to by Express Scripts. Told adding next day del for free and would ship that day or the next, that was Monday. Said expedited, and next day ship all week. Still has not shipped and out of medication, it's now following Sunday. Very rude supervisor stated meds are received 5-7 business days after script received. Script was 15th, now the 24th. Acct says delayed now... Who knows when it will arrive because everyone I talk to says it's been expedited... Maybe that means I'll only be without my meds a week or two this time? I once got meds to quit smoking, when I finally got them a month later, no longer needed them. Then they penalize you for moving script to a local pharmacy.

Every time I have a renewal there is an issue. If they are out of stock, they just stop the process and rely on you doing a follow up every day until a solution is found. They never have any solutions. So, the 90 day supply deal doesn't really work that well. I spend hours of time with their nonsense. They manipulate the payment systems to their advantage in the manner of confusion, so they take advantage of the normal consumer. It should have a selection for negative stars.

My local pharmacies do not have my husband's medication in stock, and he is never able to get it filled when needed. We were happy to find out that Express Scripts keeps this medication stocked, however every month since we have been getting it filled here, I have had to call every day for at least a week to ask the same questions, 1. Can it be overnighted? and 2. Can it be expedited because he ran out of his 30 day supply? The script was sent over on 3/13 and it is now 3/21 and I spoke to someone for at least 30 minutes every day since it was sent over and I still have no idea when they are going to send it out. Dealing with this company is very frustrating because no one knows what is truly going on and you cannot get a straight answer, even when asking for a manager. They also tell me that I need to get an emergency stock from a local pharmacy, but our local pharmacy does not have it.

They want to mail out antibiotics and inhalers as if they are not needed right away. Hold times are ridiculous and customer service is lacking at best. This is a very poor business. They're supposed to be taking care of their Service Members, families, and Veterans, but I don't see it that way. Now I am stuck without my much needed migraine medication until who knows when! I've been overcharged for meds and then have to call for a refund. At least I get the refunds but do not get back the 30-60 minutes of my life that it takes to make things right. My local pharmacies have issues stocking my medication so because my insurance company prefers Express Scripts, I made the switch. The first order had some delay issues which made me nervous, but the issues seemed ironed out. I received my prescription and then it came consistently for a couple of months. Last month, express scripts cancelled my order due to a supply issue. Every week, I tried contacting them, but my calls kept being disconnected so I used the online chat. Every time I thought I was getting a resolution for my prescription to be filled, it would be disconnected. In my opinion (and original understanding), this company should automatically contact a customer regarding out of stock medication when it becomes available. I should not have to chase the pharmacy that I have chosen to give my business to about stocking issues. I am not psychic so how would I know when to call.
The process is just as frustrating and abysmal as it was with local pharmacies and when the prescription is shopping as it ought to everything is fine, but what I thought might be a one week delay in a prescription that keeps me safe.& healthy has turned into a month and they need to do better. I don't know if it is their phone system, chat code, or other issues, but being disconnected over and over on top of the frustration of the issue is unacceptable. It should not take hours of my time to do something that should be happening when my doctor sends a prescription and the pharmacy receives it. I'm supposed to receive it and pay, not play detective and psychic.

Where to begin, we were forced to switch this company after our insurance stopped taking Smiths. It's been ridiculous to put it nicely. I have fought with them for multiple days straight trying to get them to fill a prescription. A controlled substance for a child to be specific. The most recent...they started processing the order on February 1st. We didn't get the medication until February 13th. (Almost 2 weeks) that is 2 weeks without a medication. Then the next prescription comes to fill March 2nd. They cancel the order stating supply issues. I call and find out what dosage they have in stock and call our doctor to send in a different prescription.
We are now March 6th because of weekends and turn around time. They cancel again because payment hadn't been made so I call on the 6th and make the payment. They put it back in processing. I get a text on March 7th order cancelled. Call in they manually push it through to processing... March 8th get another text canceled again. Call in they don't know why so they manually push it again. March 9th same thing. March 10th I finally demand to speak with a supervisor. They request it to be pushed again and 1 day shipping. March 11th check the app and there is nothing in processing. Call in and the supervisor says they don't know why and that it is in processing on their end. They are full of excuses and no answers. I would bet my salary that I will get another cancelation and another round of excuses. Mail order pharmacies should not even be a thing if they can't fill prescriptions AND get them out in time.

Customer service acted like being on medication was my fault. They couldn't be bothered. First, they are my script plan administrator as well as a pharmacy....so that's a conflict....When I tried to use my preferred provider, the price magically tripled. $20 went to $60. But only because I was using my insurance. Second when I tried to get approval for non-generic meds they declined (even though generics cause a serious side effect that I have well-documented). Third, they received my files from another claim administrator and promptly lost them so customer service told me to get the approval process started. I had just received approval from the other admin for a year's worth. I called my doc and they started the process over.
ES kept asking for fax numbers...What? No one uses fax.. but it was a convenient excuse .. They told me they could not do anything without a fax number. I guess they can't call my prescriber either? So I gave in and ordered my meds through them. I don't have the time to go through this. It took two months for them to fill the order. And despite entering payment info at the time of the order they keep sending me collections notices. It's like they can't do anything properly. They can't save records, they can't bill, they can't remember if you've paid and they just can't be bothered. I'm actually complaining to my HR. 4000 1 star reviews? Then Even made a smart remark after I nicely said, "I feel like every time I come here I get treated rudely." “Well you need to see why you need coolant so often.” Then walked off. Finally they said they would expedite a phone call to them in order to get it transferred. I also explained that I was running out of meds and that I wanted to pay extra for 2 day shipping. Then I decided to look online at my order on 2/8 - still processing so I emailed them. They told me to call member services because asking for an update on the process was considered a clinical question that only pharmacists could answer and pharmacists don't email. I call and they said it's still in process.
I look online again on 2/12 and It showed as cancelled at my request. I did not at all cancel. So I called and they said that Fred Meyer had sent them a blank Rx so they cancelled the entire order without notifying me at all. 2/16 I call and they said it's now in process again and will be delivered over the weekend. I also email and the response I get via email on 2/19 is that it won't be shipped out until 2/21. It's 2/20 and I'm completely out of meds with no idea when I will be getting my order. I dialed a second # which could not help. I finally called the # on the medication label. This time I was connected to a lady who was able to get me into the account. She said I already had auto delivery on 2 meds. She set it up for the 3rd med. This took me the better part of the day. The last lady was very calm, found the problem, and got me into the account. I have struggled with my weight for years. I have tried so many weight loss plans including Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Optavia, **, and Noom to name a few. I am 65 years old, 6 feet tall, and weighed 271 pounds. I also have an afib heart. After consulting my primary care physician and cardiologist, I was prescribed ** in December, 2023. I didn’t want to take any of the diabetic medications which have become popular weight loss meds. I am not pre diabetic and was concerned with the effects they can have on the pancreas. When my doctor sent the prescription to my pharmacy, my Medicare Advantage prescription plan was CVS Care. This plan has always been amazing and went above and beyond to take care of all of my prescription needs.
I picked up my first month’s supply of 2.5 mg injection pens ($50 copay). The pharmacy said there was also a one-month supply of 7.5 mg pens which would be returned if I did not take those also, which I did (another $50 copay). I took my first dose on January 3, 2024. In my opinion, this is a miracle drug! After taking all four 2.5 mg doses, I discussed using the 7.5 mg supply. 5 mg dosage should have been my second step, but somehow the prescription was submitted for 2.5 and 7.5. She said to try it and discontinue if I had any negative side effects, which I didn’t experience.
Meanwhile, my Medicare Advantage prescription plan switched to Express Scripts. This change has been a nightmare. Their “Customer Service” and their supervisors were extremely rude and said that Express Scripts does not cover ANY weight loss medications. I find this to be ludicrous and extremely concerning when considering the obesity epidemic in this country. The cash amount for a one-month supply is $1,200+. Even Good RX is over $1,000 per month. The $550 that Eli Lilly might provide it for would be a hardship. My wife and I are retired teachers, and because I am over 65 and on Medicare, I don’t qualify for the $25 Savings Card from Eli Lilly. This is so disappointing.
As of this morning, I have been on ** for 7 weeks. I also exercise and have changed my eating habits. I HAVE LOST 35 POUNDS!!! I still need to lose at least 35 more pounds. Because Express Scripts will not cover **, I find it highly unlikely that this will happen, and ultimately I will at some time be diagnosed as diabetic. They will then have to cover diabetic medications which I am trying to avoid. This is such a travesty. If given then choice of prescription plans, do not use Express Scripts.

I tried to transfer another online and could not figure the process out. Therefore, I called customer service. When they finally came on the line it took me nearly 15 minutes to get a straight answer that I cannot transfer a prescription, that still has refills, through their online system from another pharmacy to them.
Also, during this phone call, the customer service agent raised his voice to me more than once and kept telling me he had told me. I can hear well but he did not explain, he double talked telling me THEY had called and gotten my previous prescription. I asked how their procedure went since I am new and want to transfer current prescriptions. Never a straight answer. So, I informed him I will do it the old fashion way and contact each individual doctor to fax a new prescription to this company each time. He said yes. Finally, this could have been so much simpler with better communication. Sadly, it was such a simple online procedure with the previous online pharmacy I used; but their costs went up too much. I hope this gets easier so I do not have to call in again.

They were to contact my doctor for a refill. Said they did several times. I'm friends with the receptionist - no they didn't. It's an important medication. After 5 months, I'll pay the extra 10% (my insurance company covers 80% at local pharmacy, 90% through ESC), so I can at least communicate AND get my medication.

I requested a refill on the 2nd and it is now the 10th and it is still processing. There is no problem with the prescription and I did not receive any notice that they didn’t have it. There is no reason it should take so long. By the time I get it, it will be time to reorder. This has been happening a lot with a variety of meds.

This company is the most inept company on this planet. They boost that what you to take a survey so they can improve their business. But it does no good. Their customer service is so bad that they don’t even deserve a one-star. And their app is the most worthless piece of software that it has no business being available. Never in my life have I ever had to deal with a company who is in health care business who lacks any care so with the people they do business. I switched insurance recently and Express Scripts is our preferred pharmacy. First off, always add at least 1-2 weeks to the ETAs. I've waited over a month for extremely important medications. Also, if they are schedule II, like certain painkillers. It will be difficult to get a local pharmacy Refill if it's already on order. I don't know why they just don't give legitimate ETAs. When calling, you will receive all sorta of information. In my experience, most of it will be incorrect. Just remember.... there is nothing "Express" about Express Scripts.

I have been a Type 1 Diabetic for years and have never experienced problems with getting life saving medication as I have with this incompetent group. Every single time I have spoken with Customer Service I have gotten different responses on what needs to be done to get through the pre-authorization process just to get insulin or Dexcom sensors and transmitter. I do not understand why ANY type of insulin that a doctor prescribes you would be considered not covered. Each type of insulin and brand works differently in an individual's body in regards to blood sugar control so do you not think a dr and patient knows better than some 90 day supply company? I was only given two choices to use. The generic form of ** which by the way a lot of generic medication even though they have the same primary component in them do not work the same as the brand name.
** does not work well for me and I was not as in control with my diabetes even using an insulin pump. Or an insulin that I had never even heard of before and when I looked it up it was not even FDA approved for usage in an insulin pump. Which my doctor would have known but I guess this company knows better than a physician. I am really considering complaining to my representative about the process and this company for restrictions on life saving medications. So you go though the preauthorization process and it takes weeks to get things pushed through.
When you call you get told they do not send anything to the doctor in order to facilitate the process after a prescription is placed. Unless a local pharmacy gets the prescription and then they send a form to the doctor for preapproval which baffles me why Express Scripts would not do that as they require this. It then takes weeks to get this pushed through. Last time for my Dexcom sensors the hold up I was told was they were waiting on determination if I was diabetic. Really? No, I just put myself through having an insulin pump and taking insulin over 30 years for nothing. And as I have been forced to use this prescription service through my employer for several years they would have record of me ordering this during that time frame. I guess they can not bother themselves to verify their own records.
I finally got a customer service rep to tell me that their is a number for the dr's office to call but they do not provide that to the physicians upfront when a prescription comes in or a prescription request is sent to them. Why is this? To once again prolong the time period to get medications? Medication to once again prevent harm or even death without taking them? This really is unacceptable!
One bottle of insulin without using insurance is close to 300 dollars and a family might not be able to afford that in case of an emergency situation such as this. You guys should be ashamed or yourself for preventing retrieval of medications that could dramatically affect someone’s health and well being. If my employer did not require you I would NEVER use you. But I guess you are the cheaper option for them and I guess with less money spent you get what you get. It angers me that you would prevent this for those of us suffering with chronic illnesses that will not go away and are only controlled through daily intake of medications. Shame on you!

I can't even begin to describe the absolute nightmare that this company has put me through. The stress they've caused me is off the charts. After nearly a YEAR of dissatisfaction I finally filed a claim after multiple follow-up calls about my medication that has been stuck in processing for 10 days (in the past, it’s been 2+ months). And what do they do? They won't even admit that it's not in stock, they just keep saying it's in processing. Like, come on, can you be any more unhelpful? This makes it nearly impossible for me to get another prescription from my doctor and find a different pharmacy. It's like they're deliberately trying to make my life that much more difficult.
But wait, it gets better. During one of my delightful conversations with a customer service rep (who I've had the pleasure of speaking with countless times before because my medication is always ridiculously delayed), this genius decides to tell me she knows my place of work. She straight up asks me to confirm that I work at (insert job here). What kind of invasive nonsense is that? Now I’ve been in the customer service realm, and I understand that 90% of complaints may be out of their control. But what I’ve experienced with Express Scripts has reached has reached a whole new level of insanity.
I’ve called them at least 20 times over the past 10 months, politely inquiring about their glacial-pace processing and their garbage generic products that wouldn’t even show up on a urine test, and never once has anyone asked me about my place of work. So, naturally, when I question her about it, she clams up and refuses to give me an answer. When I bring up my concerns to the manager, she apologizes and admits that the question was inappropriate. But that's where it ended. No real action taken, just a templated apology.
When I requested the employee's ID to file a formal complaint, she conveniently "forgets" to give it to me. The manager then offers to "assist" me with escalating my prescription. Well, it’s been 6 days since then, and I still haven't received my prescription. Really top-notch service they’ve got going on here. So, naturally, I take matters into my own hands and file the complaint online. And what do I get in response? A generic reply saying they'll file it with my account and that's it. No follow-up, no details, just a big fat middle finger to my concerns. This company has access to our private information, and just expect us to be okay with the consistent misuse of it. Unbelievable, but all considered, not surprising.
At this point, I have absolutely zero faith in Express Scripts. My personal information is clearly not safe with them. That customer service rep clearly thought she had the right to intimidate and invade my privacy by revealing she knew my workplace. How is that relevant to filling a simple prescription? And don't even get me started on the quality of their medications. I swear, the junk they've sent me in the past might as well be placebo pills. Someone needs to investigate their so-called "medicine."
My three-month prescription is still floating somewhere in the abyss either in, around or outside of their shipping center in St. Louis, for all I know, according to the tracking #. Not only are they incompetent, invasive, and dismissive, they can't even get their shipping right, but were happy to take my money when I asked for it to be expedited. I couldn’t even imagine if I needed something like insulin from these people. Bravo, Express Scripts. Your spot right next to the rest of these big pharmaceutical tyrants has been cemented and well-deserved. I look forward to this class action lawsuit.

I was prescribed a new medication and my insurance company recommended Express Scripts to save money. It has been a month-long nightmare. I needed a pre-authorization and that came through right away. Then they needed some questions answered by my doc, but never sent them the form. So that took another week. I don’t expect my doctor to drop everything right away for a form! My doctor sent over a 3-month prescription, Express Scripts put it in as 28 days. Then cancelled the order, I called and was told it had to be more than 35 35-day prescription. So their screw-up cost me another week. Then they required the doctor to send an entirely new prescription. Why? The original one they had was correct! Finally, it seemed like everything was in order.
Today I see on the app it’s “delayed”. They need to speak to my doctor. So again I called and inquired as to why. They said, they need more info from my doctor to see if it will work safely for me in this case. WHAT??? They had the pre-auth with ALL of the necessary info on it, that my insurance saw and approved, they had the script from my doc. Who the hell are they to determine that my doctor, THAT KNOWS ME, could perhaps be wrong in prescribing me this. Or my insurance approving me because I meet the criteria could be wrong in approving this. Express Scripts is supposed to fill the orders and send them on their way. Who the hell are they to need more clarity that I actually need it? Who are they to play doctor in determining what is best for my medical care? I wish I had done more research before using them and see they have TERRIBLE reviews. Not worth the 40 bucks I would have saved.

Our health is our most precious asset, and we need much more support from Express Scripts. For years now, due to my job and my wife's job, we've been tethered to Express Scripts. I rely on various medications, including a crucial heart medication. Dealing with Express Scripts has always been a challenge, but today was a new low. They flat-out refused to approve the medications I've depended on for so long, opting instead for a cheaper alternative with unpleasant side effects. What's even more frustrating is that they've approved my medication before. While it's been a battle in the past, they've eventually come around. But this time, they're standing firm.
Even after my doctor spent considerable time advocating on my behalf, they wouldn't budge, simply directing us to their complaint department. Now, I'm faced with the daunting prospect of having to spend over $1,000 just to maintain my health because they've left me in a precarious situation. It's not just about the financial strain; it's also about feeling overlooked and undervalued as a long-time customer genuinely in need. Considering my history with them, I doubt sharing my experience will lead to a resolution. I think they will dismiss it as a mere "complaint". My hope is that one day, Express Scripts will recognize that every shared experience on this platform is not a "complaint". Rather it's a plea from their customers for understanding and assistance. And honestly, writing this negative review is a first for me. I never imagined I'd have to resort to this, but the frustration has reached a boiling point.

Express Scrips is one of the worst and most crooked insurance companies out there and no surprise given they are owned by Cigna - another of the worst. Also no surprise they are in the middle of a lawsuit and scandal. I hope it is enough to get them put out of business so that my prescription coverage can change. Government oversight into their practices at the very least. And this is why I feel this way: My doctor prescribed specific medication for a specific reason. Express Scrips thought they knew more about me and my health than my physician and refused to pay for this medication until I took older, outdated medication to prove that the cheaper option does not work for me. Surprise, surprise - it does not work and I will have to do a 'full trial' through a specific time period determined by Express Scrips, not my physician, before I can even try to get the original medication paid for.
They refused to pay for a GENERIC medication just because there is an older generic medication in the same classification that works differently and is cheaper. This is why health care in the United States is so appalling and people cannot get the care they need. Health care is being driven by what insurance companies will pay for, not what the individual needs to maintain their health and wellbeing. WHY IS NO ONE OVERSEEING THIS OR PAYING ATTENTION?? If there is a medication prescribed by a licensed physician for a specific diagnosis, there should not be any question about coverage. Even my state's Medicaid pays for this medication. Why does Express scripts get to do this? How is this legal and justifiable?

This sudden change has left me unable to afford my medication, as I was also informed that my local pharmacy's cost would increase to $375 due to lack of coverage. This restriction to only purchase the expensive 90-day supply is unreasonable and puts a significant financial strain on me and others in similar situations. I was given a sheet informing me I could set her up an account at Express Scripts. I contacted them and they assisted me in setting up the account. There was NO MENTION of a cost. Because I was referred by the military pharmacy I believed it to be covered.
Two days after setting up the account I received an email informing me it was $13.00 per prescription for a total of $78.00. My friend is on a fixed income and this amount would put a hardship on her. I asked them to cancel the order and I would have her prescriptions transferred back to the pharmacy. I also mentioned there was no mention of cost on the sheet I was given by the pharmacy nor on the website when I completed the form.
I was told the order was shipped and could not be stopped and the $78.00 was due. Unfortunately the cost of some of the Rx is much more than she could have paid at the local pharmacy. Also, the prescriptions are free at the base pharmacy. I believe Express Scripts knew they could hold her over a barrel for the funds as they told me they would turn her over to collections. I had had a bad experience with Express Scripts a number of years ago, so had stopped using them. But as they were my only option to use in order to get a 3-month prescription, I had no choice but to try them again recently when I was to be going on a long trip that would require me to need more than 1 month of medicine at a time. My biggest concern with Express Scripts in the past was that they shipped using the US Postal Service. In addition to the fact that the postal service in our area is unreliable as well as mailboxes being prone to theft, I also have major concerns about my prescription medications sitting in a hot mailbox for hours... so I wanted my meds shipped via a door-to-door delivery service rather than USPS. This shouldn't be an issue...and I was willing to pay extra for this.
My original 3 month supply was ordered, using what I was told would be a service other than USPS. It took longer than expected to arrive, and arrived via...you guessed it...the USPS, left in my mailbox. When it came time to reorder, I decided to do so via telephone so that I could make sure that my request was crystal clear...that I needed my meds shipped via a carrier other than the USPS, and one that would deliver to my door rather than leaving a package in my mailbox. The first customer service agent I spoke to was stumped by this request, and "couldn't find" the list that showed different shipping options.
Completely incompetent and unable to figure out what should be a basic request, she said she needed to transfer me to another department. She did so, and after waiting about 15 minutes on hold on what seemed to be a dead end line (no hold music or any other indication that I'd actually been transferred to a live department), I hung up. I called Express Scripts back and got a different customer service agent.
This one actually seemed to understand my request, and stated that she didn't understand why the previous agent "couldn't find" the list of alternate carriers and their costs, as she had it right there in front of her. I was very clear in stating my reasons for wanting a service other than USPS; I let her know that while I wasn't in a specific rush, and thus didn't need the Rx expedited, I DID need it to be shipped by a door-to-door carrier such as FedEx or UPS. She told me this was no problem and that there would be an $18 charge for this shipping upgrade, which I agreed to.
I then asked her which shipping service they'd be using...she said she wasn't sure...but confirmed that they would definitely NOT ship it through the postal service. Soooo...my package from Express Scripts arrived today and guess what...wait for it...it arrived via USPS, in a plastic bag shoved in my mailbox. Unbelievable! I spent around 45 minutes dealing with Express Scripts solely about this ONE issue...shipping carrier...and they still managed to screw it up...and charge me $18 to do so. The utter incompetence of this company is shocking.
They literally have only ONE job... ship out prescriptions... and they can't get it right. This really is not rocket science... I have a prescription through another mail order service and they have NO PROBLEM shipping to me through non-USPS carriers... They get it right every single time... as opposed to Express Scripts, which is now zero for two with me. Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me. I will most definitely NOT be using Express Scripts mail order again.
With 5 of us in our family, we receive several letters EACH MONTH from Express Scripts, suggesting we switch our prescriptions to their mail order service. They clearly spend a significant amount on this excessive marketing material. Given that they have an average of 1 out of 5 stars reviews on this site, it sure seems their money would be much better spent hiring and training competent people who could do their job correctly, rather than on marketing materials. Do better, Express Scripts.

My daughter has been provided the diabetic meds and supplies that she requires. It is a shame that it takes involving a congressmen (who happens to be on the Armed Services Committee) to get the issue resolved. If the other issues had been handled like this past one they would receive a five-star rating.

I have to fight to get life saving medications to treat my daughter's type 1 diabetes. I am thankful that Congressman Banks helped resolve one of three issues I have experienced. I have had to buy needles from an online diabetic supply store when Express Scripts cancelled a script that they "did not have". I had to contact the Endocrinologist office to have the script changed, one would think that they could have substituted to begin with. I had to rely on handouts from the Endocrinologist for 30 days worth of Dexcom G6 while Express Scripts put hurdles in place through their prior authorization process. It took Congressman Banks to get this resolved.
Now that the script was moved into their hands vs a local pharmacy we are down to one Dexcom and our order sits in processing status. I phoned on 18 January and was assured that it would ship as early as 19 January. I just got off of the phone late on 22 January because it still says processing and was told that the estimated ship date is 23 Jan with 7 day shipping. The life saving insulin that was transferred to Express Scripts was listed for 15ml. They shipped a vial of 10ml and stated that the could not meet the requirement and would not send more than was prescribed somehow believing that it is better to short an eleven year old her medication than to ship an extra 5ml. This company is a national embarrassment but has been chosen to support our service members. If I knew that this was my reward for my 21 years of service I might have chosen another path.

Long story short, the first person put the info in incorrectly so I was never going to get the Rx. I found that out when I called to see where it was on 1/10. They said they would expedite it. When I didn’t get it four days later I called again. There was an issue with my debit card. I confirmed the info and thought they put it in and I’d get the medication the following week. When I didn’t, I called again and it still had not been ordered! Today is 1/19. I asked my doctor to change the Rx to something I can get locally because the mail order is inefficient and worthless. Their solution was to speak to a pharmacist to learn the effects of missed doses. I know the effects, I’m living with it! If you can avoid this company, by all means, find another way!

And it's like a full-time job staying on top of the medication and trying to order it just in time. I've spent the better part of my morning on the phone with 6 different Express Scripts representatives. The 1st one, Aubrey, was in training and didn't know how to execute a refill. He cold transferred me to Donna. She was able to fill one of my kids' Rx before she erroneously transferred me to someone in the Tricare dept. Neither that new rep nor I knew why. 7 minutes later she was still trying to figure out who to transfer me to. I chose to hang up and call back in.
I was on hold for 17 mins when the doorbell rang. I hung up and called back and got another new hire who could only see that one Rx was in process but couldn't see any other pending Rx for my child. I asked her to help refill cartridges and sensors for another child's insulin pump and CGM. She said sure she could help and asked if that was the thing called Humalog...no, that's insulin and we have plenty. I'm on hold, 19 minutes into this call while she is looking for someone to help. Still on hold, 24 mins now.
That's just today's scenario. Yesterday, I spent nearly 2 hrs on the phone regarding my one Rx. On Jan 11th, an ES rep called to tell me the auth had been approved and the Rx would be shipped shortly. I've been awaiting this auth since Nov. The next day I got an email stating the Rx would arrive by Jan 20th. Friday, I got an email stating they couldn't fill the Rx. No reason given. Apparently ES no longer fills Rx ordered for less than 35 days. The folks working there didn't even know, hence no mention of it during the phone call on the 11th or the email that followed. No one there reached out to my MD to get a longer Rx nor did anyone call me like they did to tell me it was approved?! They lack skilled cust svc reps, follow through, accountability and integrity. I hate that I am tied to this Rx vendor via our employer group health plan. I feel like we are all at risk having to use them. Oh, and by the way, still on hold now 32 plus minutes

My family has been using Express Scripts for years - not by choice, but because my employer's medical plan requires it for maintenance drugs. Both my wife and I have chronic conditions that require multiple medications to treat, and we rely on these drugs to survive. By and large, Express Scripts had a history of processing reasonably fast and delivering reliably. This has all changed in the last 6 months or so. For starters, they now frequently use a delivery method that entails having DHL do the "long haul" shipping and handing it off to the USPS for the local delivery.
On two separate occasions now, my medicine has been "lost" in the handoff between DHL and USPS. In both cases, DHL insisted it had been handed off to USPS, and USPS insisted they were waiting for the handoff. In both cases, Express Scripts made this MY problem to resolve. This never happens/happened when shipments come through a reliable shipper like UPS or FedEx. This is people's HEALTH here - shipping needs to be reliable, and when it DOES break down, someone needs to be accountable. It is unacceptable.
Now then, recently, on top of these problems, fulfillment times have gone through the roof. These are IN HOUSE delays, not shipping. In the past, when a prescription was received by Express Scripts, it was filled, typically, within 3 days at MOST, and sometimes quicker. As of right now, my family has FIFTEEN prescriptions waiting to be filled, some of them now two weeks old, with no sign of being filled. They have been in a "processing" status for weeks. When you call to inquire, the "customer service" agents simply say there's nothing they can do and if you need it quicker to see if your provider can "call in a temporary emergency supply" to your local pharmacy. For starters, this defeats the entire purpose of mail-order pharmacy. And on top of that, the insurance company won't PAY for that temporary supply because they've already PAID for the mail-order supply.
Finally, as a diabetic, I receive insulin through mail order delivery. In early December, my insulin was "out of stock" and delayed. This is not a problem, because I always have 30 days or more of emergency backup. However, Express Scripts put my prescription in a "delayed" status for about ten days, then simply CANCELED IT OUTRIGHT. When I called, it took me well over an hour to have it "reinstated", only to be told it would be placed "on hold" until it was back in stock, and the onus was on ME to "call periodically" to see if it's back in stock and request to remove the hold. How can a pharmacy simply "cancel" a prescription because it's temporarily out of stock?
Something has to be done about this. Express Scripts' service is getting progressively worse. Someone is going to get seriously ill (or even die) if they do not get their medications when they are supposed to.

First, I am grateful for Consumer Affairs for the opportunity and pathway they give as a bridge for Express Scripts and myself. After several communiqués that gave clarity for both sides, my medication was received yesterday (1/25/24). When our voices and opinions are heard and we are open to a solution that renders a different path, an idea emerges had not the conversations happened. Final thoughts, I see this event as neutral. I have learned and honed skills that are pursuant of my well being: physical and mental health. Thank you Express Scripts for listening and strategizing with me. I am grateful. May your company continue to soar as you serve the individuals entrusted under your stewardship.

Express Scripts. I am so frustrated, disappointed, saddened and angry with insurance companies in the main. Express Scripts errored in my mail order of 90 day supply of a needed prescription. In mid December I had my primary physician send a prescription to Express Scripts. In December 14 I called to notify ES of a change of address and that I had a pending order. The representative did not indicate any issues and changed my address change. Unbeknownst to me, the order was “processed” and the representative didn’t inform as such.
On December 19, I called and then the string of suggestions to “help” remedy the situation. All of which I had to do footwork. Express Scripts never took ownership or accountability. It was suggested for me to go back to my former residence, which I could not. It was suggested I call my primary physician to send a new prescription. Here they never gave any stipulations of what that would entail. I called my primary doctor to send a new prescription. However, my physician’s office said there may be an out of pocket expense because the prescription are so close to each in filling the prescription.
I called Express Scripts trying to mitigate the cost for us. However, representatives were not trained to help in such a matter so I asked her to supervisor. Having to explain the situation three times because the representative is less than par is. The representative kept talking about the old prescription and that it was already “delivered”. 4-5 times it kept saying the same jargon and excuse. My request is for them, Express Scripts, to be proactive and I’m helping them avoid another erroneous mistake. The representative can’t get out of the mode, “I can’t fill a prescription until I have the new prescription.” He thinks that’s what I’m asking him to do. I’m asking him to note my account somehow that a prescription is coming
Finally, dismissed him and asked to speak to a supervisor. Why on earth do people get jobs in a call center without the basic listening skills is beyond my comprehension. Each time calls (total of 5) lasted over 39 minutes. Supervisors I spoke to were Maria and Veronica. Each time told me they’re going to escalated to the appropriate account manager and I would hear back in 48 hours. Not once did I receive an email or a returned call. Being without my medication for now four weeks. Express Scripts passed the blame to the insurance company. Stating since they never got back to Express Scripts, they cannot fulfill the prescription because too much time elapsed.
Loopholes to absolve companies who are supposed to be conduits of healing. Spending five weeks to correct this only to have the prescription unfulfilled and being without prescription that is needed, is the brand they have. The erroneous steps that they have is systemic to the greater problem for this company. Choose another pharmacy to fulfill your prescriptions and for mailing. There is not as strategic plan to help the customer when mishaps happened on either side. In this case, the onus was on Express Scripts, though they never admitted it, they only gave excuses.

If you're like me, you likely had the misfortune of your national pharmacy administrator moving to Express Scripts. First and foremost, I offer you my condolences. After each interaction, I think to myself that surely the customer service cannot be any worse and each time I am proven wrong. It took my husband weeks, literal weeks, before everything was finally resolved and his medication was delivered. Weeks of going back and forth with Express Scripts, Accredo, and his doctor's office.
No one in this company is on the same page. You, your care coordinator, your pharmacy, and your doctor will all be given different information depending who you're speaking with and when you speak with them. My most recent experience took over 24 hours before the issue was solved. Multiple times I was told that they were faxing a prior authorization form to my doctor's office.
Spoiler alert: They never sent one. But unbeknownst to me, despite what we were told all day, a prior authorization wasn't even needed! It took a different supervisor, the following day to give me the correct information. No one until Day 2 was willing to call my doctor's office or my pharmacy despite several different customer service reps on Day 1 taking down the information. They didn't even have my PCP's name correct until Day 2 despite me also giving that information to them multiple times.
It should not take over 24 hours to get a customer service rep or supervisor that knows what they're talking about and can give a correct answer. The customer service reps either lie to customers or are woefully undertrained and inadequate. As a pharmacy benefit administrator, both are inexcusable. Medication plays a major role in health and well-being. And yet, their customer service and sense of urgency is worse than a retail store.

We used Express Scripts many years ago and it was a horrible experience. We avoided it for over a decade. This year our insurance offered no preferred pharmacies with drive-throughs, so I thought...how bad can it be? ...maybe it's become more competent. BAD CALL. I have been trying to get my daughter's anti-convulsants filled the past five days. At present, and after about five hours on the phone, I am afraid our order of four new RXs is no closer to being mailed than it was when the RX were sent to Express Scripts.
First, just getting through to a live person is a five-minute chore. Lots of "screens" and auto voices must be tripped through first. Ridiculous. Once to a live person, no one seems to have general knowledge. I ask a simple question about timing or an expedited shipping speed and am told "I must transfer you for that..." or "I will need to send you to your designated rep for that..." Then I'm transferred and that new person who has no clue what to do or say. Then I'm transferred again and again. Absolutely appalling. There are typically at least 20 minutes on hold between transfers.
I tried to use the website to track progress on my order. For a day or two most RXs showed "in process" and I assumed all was well. Today I logged on and saw that things had been on hold waiting for me to put the items in the cart. Note that the web did NOT indicate this previously nor does the general on-line how-to- order mention that you must do that to activate the processing. My daughter's meds incur no costs to us, so the cart is rather a non-issue typically. Had the add to cart showed up initially I would have done so then. It did not. It took me a long time to find the link that activated add to cart, but I did hit the magic spot and added three RXs to cart. That changed nothing and still stated "action needed."
Hence I called. After two hours I learned that they had to call me and authorize the medications before they'd start filling. NOWHERE do they tell a customer this evidently critical step. One rep told me, someone should have called you to authorize....well, no they didn't. This meant that my rxs were delayed a minimum of FOUR days before even starting to fill them. Then I tried to find to how to expedite shipping. More transfers. More holds. More answers... "Can't do that, need to talk to (fill in blank) and I'll transfer you..." More holds, more I can't do that. Sigh. And one RX showed in process four days in a row then suddenly it seems they decided to call the doctor for a prior authorization--calling AFTER the doctor's office hours, meaning it will be Monday at the earliest when they can BEGIN to fill that RX.
In sum, tired of typing, but it was much worse than that. Rep finally found to expedite shipping and the filling, but I am not confident that this will happen since I got messages saying to expect my orders by January 21st, TWO weeks after my physician sent the scripts to them. My local pharmacy can fill them in under twenty-four hours... So, here's the bottom line. After about six hours on hold Tuesday-today, and no medication in sight for a loooong time...it would have made more sense to go into a pharmacy and wait in line. It would have saved me about 5.5 hours and I would not have the meds that we will greatly suffer not having. Of course, since they are in process, that means I can't fill them elsewhere locally because insurance has already been claimed on the Express Script fills.
Call this a lesson learned. Express Scripts is awful. They kept saying, "Things are very backed up. It's January." What a surprise. January came again next year. Give me a break. Express Scripts: quit piling up the $$ into fat cat owner accounts at the expense of the customers. I am one customer not willing to tolerate the incompetence at the expense of my daughter's health. I'm outa here.

I recently had the misfortune of trying to deal with this company. Due to a change in my insurance policy, I was informed my current pharmacy was no longer honoring my insurance, but that Express Scripts was an option. Because one of my medications is listed as a "controlled substance", I needed to get approval from my doctor to receive a 90 day supply. I called Express Scripts and was told that they would send a fax to my dr to get approval, and that we should know something within 72 hours. This was at 3:30 pm on Wednesday.
At 10:30 on Thursday (18 hours later) Express Scripts called to say that they had denied my claim because they were not able to get in touch with my doctor. When pressed, they claimed that they called once at 6:30 pm, and again at 7:30 am - both of these times are not my doctor's office hours. They also said that since they weren't able to get in touch within 24 hours, they denied the claim. I pointed out that 1) 24 hours had not elapsed; 2) I made it clear that 72 hours was fine, at no point did I ask them to expedite; and 3) they had called at times that it was not reasonable to expect the office to be open. Too bad, was their response, but they did let me talk to the Appeals Department. The phone call took almost an hour, and now they are telling me that they will "try" to get in touch with my doctor and that "hopefully" they would have a response in 7 days or so.
Meanwhile, I'm in limbo on my prescriptions. This company is a joke. I think I'll just go with a local pharmacy, if Express Scripts can't perform a simple approval, I shudder to think how badly they would likely mess up my prescription order. Don't waste your time with this company. Wish I had read the multitude of one-star reviews before I even considered trying to give them my business.

My child was prescribed a controlled medication in Oct 23 that required a prior auth. One was completed for the local Rite Aid which closed down in Dec 23 and transferred all prescriptions to CVS. I had to get a new prior auth for the same medication my child was already on and was already approved because of the change in pharmacies. Doctor put in a new request and Express Scripts denied it saying to use primary insurance first...
My child has only ever had one insurance in her 17 years since we're military. When I called and asked why they think she has another insurance company I was told they only show the one in their system but could not explain why they denied it saying to use my other, non-existent, insurance. I also asked why they needed a new prior auth for a med she was already on and already had a prior auth for... They said they see no history of a prior auth ever for that med. Interesting since it's a controlled med that, according to the insurance, that med has ALWAYS required a prior auth and she's been on the initial drug for 3 months and shouldn't need a new prior auth until the 1-year mark.
Everything they've told me goes against what the ROEs state, meanwhile my child had her meds abruptly halted and has been off her meds for 1 month now due to these delay tactics. They don't seem to care these are actual people on the other end of these prior auths. Every person I spoke with from Express Scripts needs some serious customer service training since each and every one of them treated me like I was the problem and not their convoluted process and delay tactics.

I just switched to Express Scripts because my insurance cancelled the contract with my nearest retail pharmacy. I had to scramble to get all 15 of my medications into them. I only found out about the cancelation last Wednesday, the 3rd. I immediately requested a refill for one of my major heart medications the morning of the 4th. I paid $26 and requested overnight delivery. It showed "Processing" by the afternoon of the 4th. I tried calling the morning of the 5th to see if I could bring it to their attention that I only had a few days of this medication left and ask it to be expedited. I held for over 30 minutes and kept trying to call only to hold for 30 minutes each time.
I finally requested a call back through their automated system. Almost an hour later they called back, I answer to a recorded voice telling me to hold and when someone picked up, they immediately hung up on me. I finally got hold of them today, Monday morning. It still shows as "Processing". I explained to the woman that I needed this because today is my last day, I only have 2 pills left. She said there was nothing she could do, no one she could talk to even find out when it would ship.
I asked if no one thinks that if the patient is paying for overnight delivery, that it's needed urgently? She said she wasn't sure. All she could suggest is that I get another prescription from my doctor to get a partial refill and pay out of pocket. However, this particularly medication is very expensive and even just 8 pills costs $100.
So now I am without this medication, which helps keep my heart beating. Waiting for my doctor to send a prescription to the nearest pharmacy and for them to fill it. But there's still no guarantee or no way of knowing when my meds will ship or if they will even get here by the end of the week. Then I'll have to go through the whole thing and put out another $100!!
Where is the urgency in getting people the medications that are keeping them alive and healthy? What is the use of their representatives if all they can do is look at a computer to see all the same information I see on their mobile app. If I hadn't been forced to use them, I wouldn't but I don't have a choice. I certainly hope they do better in the future. My health is in their hands and right now, I don't have much confidence in them.

However, their Rx management has gotten so bad that my Rx refills are taking 2-3 weeks to fill. The call ended with a promise that the prescription would be refilled and expedited. After several more days of waiting he called again, went through the same process, he was told that there was no notes made of his previous call. He was informed that my only option was the non generic, much more expensive version of my medication, I need it, so it was agreed that we’d pay for the name brand. Why isn’t anyone at Express Scripts understanding of the laws regarding controlled substances? Someone from the DEA needs to investigate exactly where these employees and supervisors are getting their information.
