Found out I need to be more proactive on managing prescriptions and question everything on invoices, will confirm with Doctor about issues Express Scripts says my Doctor ordered or asked them to do.

Updated on 02/25/2020: Second review of Express Scripts. I would rate them with a negative number if possible so a negative review is my response. Below is the response I received from Express Scripts; Status: Prescription Pended. This medication will be filled by the home delivery pharmacy after May 20, 2020. We cannot start the process until that time because the medication is not yet eligible based on previous fills.
Been taking this medication for some time now and have been out for over a month because at the time I thought it was on automatic refills and did not notice I was out. Now my health is affected by this but that is of no concern to Express Scripts. They just want me to call them but I refuse to since it will only upset me. I pay for their service so why are they playing GOD with me?
Original Review: A message was sent to me that Doctor asked them to not fill my maintenance medication that I have been taking for a long time. When I asked my Doctor about this they knew nothing about it. BEWARE!!!! Express Scripts is not a reliable service. Also at one time they called and told me my Doctor had ordered a test for me. When I asked my Doctor she had no idea what I was talking about. It ended up being a DNA swab test which I immediately threw away. Why do they think they know more than my Doctor.
Express Scripts keeps calling me to tell me to call back that they have important information about my medications. Work night shift so I blocked the phone number but they then used another number. Had to switch to a phone number that would not wake me up. I wish someone would wake up at Express Scripts and give their customers a quality service. I wish there was a zero star rating as this Company deserves it.
Also their web site is not user friendly. Can not find how to opt out of their services without calling them. Do not want to talk to them because I find them to not understand what you want to do. My Doctor's office called them about the medication mentioned above and I was put on the phone. After talking to them I came to the conclusion that they are not looking out for my health but are only looking out for themselves. Hopefully soon my nightmare will be over.

After my insurance began upcharging my newer medication 885% through my normal pharmacy, starting in 2020, they pushed Express Scripts on me to lower my pharmaceutical costs. After many calls with Express Scripts I realized they dont follow their word and hand out empty promises like candy. Now I'm weeks behind on my medication because it needs to be shipped instead of being able to get it at my normal pharmacy like I used to for a normal price. Even after holding out on my medication for weeks they will not refund me for the delays they have caused. Terrible service, terrible business, terrible company.

Looks like Express Scripts is denying ** patches across the board even for stage 4 cancer patients. It is like pulling teeth to get a prior authorization for these benign patches which cannot be used for any other purpose other than numbing a painful area. Now it is a problem of the rep at the dr's office saying she provided them with the information needed for a prior authorization and they are saying they never received it. Who is lying???? There doesn't seem to be any way to prove that the information was provided. The patches aren't even that expensive in the whole scheme of things. Why is Express scripts giving people such a hard time to obtain them? Pharmaceutical companies have such free reign, it is ridiculous.

January 24, 2020. My company switched from CVS Caremark to Express Scripts in 2020. I have a reoccurring medication that my doctor sent them. A rep called letting me know that I would have to pay $2,000 plus for this medicine because I have a $1,700.00 deductible. I have never had to pay out of pocket for this medicine.
After contacting Caremark, I learned the drug was part of a voucher program sponsored by the manufacture. I called ES back, the first gentleman I spoke with, I could not understand due to his heavy accent. English was not his first language and we were getting nowhere in the conversation. I asked if there was another CS rep that I might speak with. I was transfer to a second gentleman who kept placing me on hold. He would pop off and on the line and ask a question so quickly I could not make out what his question was. Dealing with him felt like playing a game of whack a mole.
Finally after 25 minutes, a lady comes online stating she is the Supervisor and why was she summon. Her tone was very aggressive. I told I didn't asked for a supervisor, I was just wanted to provide information that could possible lower the price of my prescription. I was bluntly informed that Express Scripts does not participate in any sort of financial assistance or manufacture voucher programs. She further informed me that I would need to go to a drug store if I wanted to use such programs. Express Scripts is a prescription service provider that doesn't participate in the same national programs that CVS Caremark does?!?! Not impressed at all with the phone etiquette of the last 2 individuals I dealt with. I went to my local CVS and they were more than grateful for my business. Good Riddance, Express Scripts.

My company recently switched to Express Scripts for our RXs. I have been on birth control for years and it has always been 100 percent covered by insurance. Just got off the phone with Express scripts and they do not cover birth control. Their exact words were it's a nonpreferred medication. IT will cost me 50 bucks a month just to get my birth control. They seriously need to reevaluate their understanding of women's health. Do not recommend AT ALL.

The reason we decided to use Express Scripts is because we live in a very rural area and the closest pharmacy is over an hour away. When I contacted Express Scripts to check on my prescription, I was assured we would have it quickly. Almost a week later, we still do not have it. It's currently "in transit". When I contacted customer service and the numerous managers, I am told they can send a the prescription to another "local" pharmacy to fill but they can't overnight the prescription to us. As I told the numerous managers: That doesn't solve the problem. And wait! They can send the prescription somewhere else to fill but can't overnight the prescription to us?
I finally talked to someone from the "office of the president" who was basically just as useless as everyone else. She said she would call me back and hours later, I am waiting for her call back. Moral of the story --- if there is a prescription that you need in a timely manner, do NOT depend on Express Scripts to provide it. If you must have the prescription sent to them, be sure to request the prescription be sent overnight mail or it may take a week or more before you have it.

I received an email indicating that it was time to fill my 3 month prescriptions, and I placed the order for the medications. 4 of the 5 were shipped out, and one medication, Xarelto, was not. They indicated that I required a pre-authorization for the medication. The med was pre-authorized on 12/30, and they indicated that the medication would be shipped. My coverage ended on 1/1, and the medication was never shipped. After being told everything from it was too close to the loss of coverage, to the medication wasn’t ordered in time, to that it was fraud to ship it out at that point, everyone I spoke to over a 5 day period had a different story why the medication did not ship. If you have alternate pharmacy options on your insurance, NEVER choose these people. They are frustrating, and Ive never had so many different people tell me lies.

Every time I have to travel out of the country for an extended period of time for work or vacation, Express Scripts just can not handle it. They have so many rules in place, it will take you a month to get your medication for a trip. I mailed my prescriptions and called ES to give me an ES address so I could overnight my prescriptions. I wanted to make sure they got the orders ASAP. However, ES has NO address other than a PO BOx - so got no help here even though I tried.
I am leaving for 90-days, I have sent in all new prescriptions and now everything is held up for their review. Even if my MD wrote the order, ES has to discuss and review it. If you have to get a 30-day supply to hold you over for any extended period not planned in your travel- you can not get a 90-day and 30-day supply at the same time -EVEN when your MD wrote the orders. ES only allows 1 vacation 90-day order a year. If you travel for work for extended periods, you will have to go without your medication. They have their rules. If you want to get a 90-day supply from your local pharmacy since they can not GET the medication delivered to you on time - no such luck. NO local pharmacy can provide a 90-day order.
I have now spoken to 6 Customer Service reps at ES including a supervisor (who was as bad as the reps) and got NO help. ES has now stepped into the shoes of my MD and is deciding my health care needs by denying medications. When I accused them of this - they said that was not the case but so far, I have not had ANY success in speeding up my medications BEFORE I leave (may be forced to reschedule my flight).
I would strongly ask ES senior management to start to pay attention to the customer, properly train your customer service reps who were mostly BAD (rude with NO interest in providing you a solution but they are very good at citing the rules). ES needs to review its policies for working people. We do not all fit into your rules and we have NO recourse. Having this group as my pharmacy has been only a nightmare. I will be speaking with my company about the VERY BAD situation with this VERY POORLY managed company. At the same time I have been struggling with ES, I have been involved with Fraud with my AMEX card. Comparing the customer Service reps from both companies - is day and night. AMEX treats you like they care. ES customer reps could care less - and they are speaking with some people who are not healthy and in need of some support. WAKE UP ES management!!!!

Called today (15 Jan) to seek a solution to my dilemma: FedEx failed to deliver the package that Express Scripts sent overnight with my medication--**. (The driver claimed that he was not able to locate our house; laughable, since FedEx has been delivering all sorts of packages, including **, without any problems in the past). ** is always shipped in a special styrofoam box with ice packs so it must be delivered within 24 hours, otherwise the medication spoils. Since the driver "got lost" on Friday, FedEx kept the box over the weekend without refrigeration. Even if FedEx tried to deliver it again on Monday (which they did not), the ** was probably already unusable. Finally, after a few useless and aggravating phone calls with the unfriendly manager, I drove to the FedEx distribution center and picked up the box at noon on Tuesday...
After this unpleasant and aggravating debacle with FedEx, my call to Express Scripts Customer Service was the complete opposite!!! The female representative was very friendly, pleasant, and knowledgeable. After I explained the situation, she put me in touch with a pharmacist who confirmed my fears that the shipped ** was not usable, due to the length of time without proper refrigeration. Then, she proceeded to tell me that I need not worry because she was putting in a new order at no cost to me. She made my day! Both ladies deserve recognition for showing what true customer service should be like. They listened, understood my predicament, and demonstrated that they really cared by taking appropriate actions. What a contrast to how I was treated by FedEx! Thank you so much Express Scripts Customer Service!

Full disclosure, I haven't used their services. I wanted to write a review of them though because I keep getting soliciting calls from them displaying some very suspicious behavior. Several times I have received robocalls from this company coming from SPOOFED numbers..what legitimate company spoofs numbers?? Each time though they have included my name and the same robo message about important information regarding my prescriptions so I once called the number they provided to see what was up. Basically the robocalls were an advertisement to use their service. An ad using my name on a spoofed number makes me extremely uncomfortable. When I called their number, the robot asked me, "Do you want to use our service" and I said no. They haven't stopped calling and leaving the same robo message from more spoofed numbers.

Updated on 01/17/2020: This is my response to the latest delay....sent 1/16. FYI now I see this medication won't be shipped until 1/21!!!! What is your problem there. I am without my breathing medication and it is all due to the incompetence of your company. If you see it within your compassion and power the least that could be done is that this is shipped the fastest way possible! This is their response this a.m (17th) 'I truly sorry about this matter, and have expedited the order. UPS Next Day Air AM.'
Although this issue is supposedly "resolved" I'll keep you posted as to when the medication arrives. In closing, I feel badly for those people who are in predicaments such as mine and who don't or can't persist in coping with the lack of true customer service. I am concerned especially for those that are sick and unable to receive their medications in a reasonable length of time. For some people this could be a life threatening situation. Thank you Consumer Affairs for assisting me. Without you I would no doubt be awaiting any type of communication with Express Scripts!
Updated on 01/16/2020: Please see my previous review for details through 1/15 about a medication originally ordered beginning of January. Today on their website, although there is approval, and after multiple calls, they are now saying the medication will be shipped 1/21 - really! The other day (1/15) it was noted as "in process - approved". Why another delay??? I responded to Express Scripts about this unacceptable service.... We'll see their response which I will share with you. This issue is by no means resolved!
Original Review: First call to Express Scripts January 2nd for a new prescription since their website was down. My doctor's office faxed them the 3rd and again the 7th of January as they said they did not receive the order. I contacted them again the 10th as it showed online they had no order. Checked with the doctor's office who had not only faxed but tried to call them with the order. Finally on the 13th I looked online and again it said no order received (yet it had said it was received online on the 11th). Doctor's office called and was on hold for forever twice on the 13th and finally after speaking to 6 different people was able to get the order in. Now today the 14th I got a call saying they can't ship the medication without my consent...I've talked to them daily about shipping this!!!! I regret I even considered going with this company for my meds - back to a reliable company ASAP.

I stopped all auto refills in March 2019. A known contaminated refill was mailed and billed despite requested stop. Now they want payment for more NOT requested, and NOT received (other) refills and threaten collection action. None at Express Scripts seems capable to do anything other than insisting on what their computer screens display. Regardless of facts. Demanding payment for not requested and not received items is mail order fraud. Threatening collection actions constitutes extortion. Dispensing medications they know to be contaminated with carcinogens could be called attempted murder, at the very least it is just plain criminal and utterly incompetent, as the entire company has represented itself toward me.
I gave up calling them months ago. Ad nauseum mail exchange is without resolution. They refuse to respond to core issues, such as why should I pay for something which I neither requested nor received. Instead, they focus on HIPAA rules, which they use to justify why I should have disclosed personal information to a stranger who called me. Save yourself that grief. Get your meds from a local pharmacy - it’ll be cheaper in the long run and save you much grief, aggravation and you are less likely to run out of meds as I have.

A Rx for ** was sent in to Express Scripts 12-30-19. I received an email that they had the request and were processing it. I had not received a notice as to when it was shipping so I called 1-2-20 to see when I should be receiving it because I was almost out of insulin. They said they didn’t have a Rx for me. I gave them the Rx invoice number from the email I had received. I was told that the claim had been rejected by the insurance company because it was too soon to be filled. I told them the dosage had been drastically changed and that the old dosage must have been sent in. She said there was nothing they could do.
I then called my insurance company and they said that the Rx was never filed on the 30 or 31. That if they would go back and back date it, the insurance company could then over ride the rejection because the dosage had changed and I was out of medication. I then called express scripts again and the lady I spoke with the second call said that it had not been filed because it was the same RX that had been filed previously and it was too soon. I said, "Mam the dosage amount to take over doubled so I ran out" and told her what the insurance company had said. Express scripts said that they could not go back and back date it, that I would have to get my Dr to send in a correct Rx and be filed thru new insurance. She asked did I want to talk to a pharmacist since I was out of medication?
I said no I would go to my Dr tomorrow that I didn’t want them to screw anything else up. I think the issue was they know I had met my OOP max last year and if it’s filed thru new ins plan this year they will get more money. Very disappointed in how it was handled. I was lied to the first call and then they argued and said that they couldn’t do what the insurance company said they needed to do. I don’t think the insurance company would have told me that if it couldn’t be done. I will definitely try to find another pharmacy to use!!!!

Express Scripts is perhaps sadly making the prior authorization process as drawn-out and customer unfriendly as possible so that patients & doctors give up. If the patient doesn't shell out big bucks to self-pay for medication that Express Scripts should cover, the prior authorization run-around either ends in the patient reluctantly resorting to medication that isn't as effective, not filling medication at all, misdirecting anger at doctors/pharmacists (instead of where the blame really lies, with Express Scripts), or suffering a prolonged impairment to quality of life. Getting medically necessary treatment from Express Scripts during the holidays is a nightmare, and the prior authorization process at Express Scripts is actually increasing costs for health care providers, patients, and the healthcare system. I don't know why Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana has engaged Express Scripts to handle prescription claims.
I've been on a specific medication for 10+ years for my sleeping issue. In 2018, after all of a sudden, Express Scripts required me and my doctor to get prior authorization for the specific medication and they wanted me to try two alternatives before granting me insurance coverage for the specific medication that I've used for 10+ years. Of course, during the past 10 years, I had tried many alternatives to the specific medication, but CVS pharmacy and my insurer don't have records older than 2 years. I had to waste the time of my doctor and his staff in digging up old records. Digging up old records from a doctor's office wasn't just the only challenge; I had to cross-reference what my doctor prescribed me in the past with what actually got filled at the pharmacy (i.e. the medication listed on a doctor's prescription might have the brand name but the pharmacist may fill a generic).
So Express Scripts, who isn't my doctor and doesn't have greater knowledge of my predicament than my physician, is telling me that I have to try two alternatives before Express Scripts will cover my specific medication that I've been taking for 10 years without issue. When I finally obtained the prior authorization, it only lasted for a year and it expired in December 2019. Who is Express Scripts to meddle with and interfere with my doctor-patient relationship OR dictate what I should try for my personal health care? Who is Express Scripts to inconvenience me and waste patient/doctor/pharmacist time?
I had to waste my time and my doctor's time with several office visits for only one condition. I had to waste money on alternative medications required for the prior authorization. I wasted countless hours on the phone with Express Scripts, my pharmacy, my doctor, and my doctor's staff. This isn't good for patients, it isn't good for overworked doctors, it isn't good for the physician's staff, and it isn't good for pharmacists. By the way, with most doctor's offices (especially primary care physicians) being closed during the weekends, the prior authorization process at Express Scripts seems deliberately intended to wear down patients and force them to take medications that are cheaper and less effective.
One last thing: If a patient has been on a medication for 10+ years, the prior authorization shouldn't be limited to one year. Again, Express Scripts is interfering in the doctor-patient relationship even though Express Scripts does not and cannot have greater knowledge about what doctors and patients want for treatment, based on personal doctor/patient experience. Shame on Express Scripts and Shame on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana for using Express Scripts. Shame on the prior authorization process at Express Scripts and meddling with patient care, scarce physician resources, and overburdened pharmacies.

Not sure why all of a sudden we are required to have a doctor call in for a prior authorization, but here we are. I've been on this medication for 10+ years for asthma. I received no letter indicating the change in policy. I call my pharmacy to refill my asthma prescription at 3pm on New Years Eve, which I desperately need and find my prescription will not be covered until they have that prior authorization. My options? Pay the $473 out of pocket and get reimbursed on the back end or suffer for another 2 days, waking up in the middle of the night to do breathing treatment and having asthma most of the day. I really had no choice except to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed - until I found out that getting reimbursed wasn't even an option anymore - she had made a mistake.
Since it's the last day of the year my plan will start over the next day, which means that if I pick it up today and my doctor calls in after New Years day, 2 days into the new plan, I can't backdate the preauthorization. It will count towards the new year. So if I pay out of pocket to get my prescription today, I won't get reimbursed the $473. Or I can suffer through the next two days, surviving on breathing treatments in the middle of the night in order to follow their ridiculous guidelines that just came out of thin air. That's what the lady at Express Scripts told me were my options. This is the worst company ever! There's a reason this company doesn't even get 3 stars!!!

I think they intend to make it as difficult as possible. I like the convenience of mail order Rx but this company is what the stereotype of the evil pharmaceutical conglomerate is based on. The terrible automated menu that can't understand what you say (even the word yes), the staff that's chained to their roles so unable to really help even if they wanted to, and the complete disregard for how their actions have real life consequences for you.
How you can suffer because their too lazy or incompetent to fax your doctor a form or provide them clear instructions. Most people use Express Scripts because their insurance makes them. Absolutely terrible! I am forced to do a 90 day supply of my diabetic prescriptions. This includes an insulin pump supply and also insulin. I was told I could be put on an extended payment plan as both of these for a 3 month supply after insurance coverage is almost 400 each. I asked for my insulin to be ordered as it is set up on payment plan, they took the whole amount out and overdrafted my account. I called for a refund to be back on payment plan. They refunded almost 500. I called and asked why? They told me I had a 113$ credit as well. I asked specifically if it was a mistake and if they were going to take more money out. They said, "No it was a credit."
Few days later 253 was taken out. Then they said it was because I should have never had a credit. Today (the next day) they took out another 251 and now telling me I'm paid up. I said, "No I'm on extended payment plan." "Well we can't refund the money. It messes up our billing." Nevermind the fact now I have checks bouncing. I called again and was told I was on extended payment plan, I asked why the whole amount and more was taken out. They don't know but I'm all paid up. I asked for the definition of extended payment plan. They explained 90 day supply order broken into 3 monthly payments. And that's what I agreed to. Express Scripts likes to play a game where they refuse to honor refills for specialty pharmacy items. I ordered my medication on the 16th of December and today is the 21st. I am out of medication and Express scripts still hasn’t shipped. They always delay by two weeks and claim that it takes times to process. However I also ordered another medication that is also a specialty medication, it arrives in two days. Express scripts is the worst government contractor in the history of Outsourcing. They are criminals who intentionally violate and harm today's War Veterans.

I use Express Scripts because my insurance prefers to go through this company and I get a 90 day supply - just like other consumers. I just checked the reviews for the first time (been using this company for the last 3 years unfortunately) and I am not surprised at the number of terrible complaints there are. The "advocates" on the phone are not competent, and they do not notify you of pricings or refills of your prescription. I'll call to see the status, they tell me that they'll put a rush on it and after a few weeks of waiting I'll call back to have them tell me that the "prescription expired and needs a refill". Why didnt they tell me that when I called weeks ago? If this wasn't the cheaper/preferred option for my insurance, I would NOT use this company. 0/10, would not recommend to a friend, not even my worst enemy.

Express Scripts is what I have to use to get insurance to cover a three month supply of my medication. I decided to try it so I could save some money. I was very wrong. The doctor promised me it would be in before my current meds ran out but I called Express scripts anyway for an estimated arrival date. I have since had to call multiple times a day for the past four days to try and get this medication shipped. At this point I have had to pay out of pocket for a temporary prescription and express scripts "rush delivery". What you would save buying from a retail pharmacy is made up in the fees you have to pay fixing Express script's incompetency.
Express scripts has continually come up with different reasons to delay my shipment. They keep contacting my dr. for more information even though it was 'processing' yesterday. They have now updated it to delay again due to more information needed from the dr. Once you call and get the issue "resolved" you will double check the website the next day and there will be a new issue with sending your medication. Save time, money and your mental health by avoiding Express scripts at all costs.

I have been taking an anti-depressant for years. Every 90 days Express Scripts is supposed to send me a 90 day supply. In September of 2019, I noticed my bottle was low (about 5 pills left) and called them to ask where my auto shipment was. They said it was in progress and I would get in 10 days. Never mind thats 5 days too late. I had to pay my local pharmacy out of pocket for enough pills to tide me over. In late November, I call again to ensure I don't run out. I was told my order was in progress.
Then on December 6 I call once more and ask to have my shipment overnighted as now I am down to 5 pills again. The associate hung up on me when I asked it to be overnighted. December 10 I call and ask to speak to a supervisor. He can do nothing for me as my order is "In Process." I still have no refill as of December 11 and once again, had to get 5 pills out of pocket from my local pharmacy. This firm has the worst service and the associates are the most unhelpful bunch I have ever spoken with.

It is clear to me that Express Scripts made the mistake. They claim that the Doctor's office made the mistake. When I called Express Scripts they would not accept that it was their mistake. They told me to have the Doctor send in a new order. This takes more than 10 days. Right now we are in heavy cedar fever time in Texas. I have not used Express Scripts in years, I used to use it for birth control which was fully covered by my insurance and mail order was great. I recently had a prescription that requires monthly fill at the local pharmacy and can get 3 months via mail order. The pharmacy said it's probably cheaper which my experience is that these bulk orders are often more cost effective than the monthly fill. I took awhile to get to a live person that could help me, however eventually someone did. She pulled up the info and confirmed my address. She clicked to submit the prescription before telling me the price! It is a fair amount more than when I buy them one at a time. I told her, "That's ridiculous" and she said, "You should check your plan." I said, "You should tell me the price before submitting the order."
I asked her to cancel it and she said, "It's in process and cannot be cancelled." She said I'll get the invoice with the package then asked me if I wanted to give her my credit card info. I told her no, I still think that is ridiculous she could submit an order that could not be cancelled before telling me the price! She said, "We don't need your approval for the pricing if it's under $150." While this may be legally true when do you agree to a service without knowing what it will cost first! Horrible. I do not agree with this at all. Will only use their service if there is literally no other choice and will certainly ask the price up front myself and not trust they will tell me that and provide good customer service.

How does Express Scripts stay in business? Can't seem to handle a temporary address change. Customer service information frequently conflicts with website order status. Today's problem not resolved after 4 calls. Put on hold several times, then call disconnected only to call back and start over again with a new agent. After inquiring about today's order status, I was informed it would be filled in 10 days, which is 10 days too late. I then asked about transferring the prescription and was given instructions. After transferring prescription from Express Scripts to a local pharmacy, Express Scripts would't approve the prescription payment to the local pharmacy because it was received in their system 6 days ago, even though it was still unfilled. Another call to Express Scripts and they inform me the order has shipped. Their website does not show the order at all anymore. Was it actually shipped? No tracking information is available. Who really knows.
Is this the first time I've had a problem with Express Scripts? No, if I'm lucky 3-4 orders come in with no problem then bam an ulcer inducing series of phone calls is needed to resolve the mess caused by a broken system or incompetence or maybe a little of both. I can't figure it out, and it would seem, neither can Express Scripts.

Express Scripts is incompetent. I get my birth control from them in an 84 day supply. Therefore, my order should process about every 3 months from them. I should have got my last supply at the end of November, but it never came. I looked at my account, and my next order date was January. That doesn’t make sense because how am I supposed to make a 3 month birth control supply last 5 months? So I changed my order date to the next day. The next day I logged in to check the order, and my account had an error. Apparently my profile didn’t match their records and it told me to change my profile. However, there were no options to change it. I called customer service (I was on hold for over 10 minutes) and they reset my password. This did not fix the issue. So I called again (I was on hold for over 15 minutes) and the only option was to delete my account. I had to then recreate it.
Two days after my order date, I still had no updates on the order. I called customer service and they said I should have my birth control by the weekend. It’s Friday now and I still don’t have it. My account says the estimated ship date is Monday. This is ridiculous. Also, I just got married in October so taking my birth control is important. I believe they are messing around with people. My order probably got messed up because I had a last name change, which happened due to marriage, and the medication that got messed up was birth control, and now I am at greater chance of getting pregnant without birth control. And I am stuck because my insurance company makes me use Express Scripts. If I want to get medication from a local pharmacy, I have to call my doctor, convince them to send the prescription to a local pharmacy, and then I have to pay full price at the pharmacy.

I have had issues with Express Scripts at many different levels. This company will do everything in their power to give you whatever generic drug they can get. I even went through their test to see if a generic would would tests showed it did not. Two years later I receive another generic drug. If you need a Rx fast, it will not happen with express scripts. It averages me 10 business days to get my Rx. If you are battling the cold/flu for example you are likely to begin recovery or hospitalization before express scripts get you your meds. You do have the option to use a local phamacy. You will pay near retail. If you have you call, pick a day when you have nothing else to do. You will most likely be on hold for over an hour. Only one time was I on hold over 3 hours.
The company claims high quality customer care. They also boast of their continuing profits. The last two statements can be found on their company web page. Bottom line is they maximize profits at customer expense. I suggest all companies who are considering express scripts to investigate this company closely, unless you are okay with marginal service and pissed off employees.

When nothing had changed by November 5th I contacted them. They had no idea what was going on with my current shipment but offered to send me a new refill which I would of course be charged for again. That order was not shipped until November 8th and only after I contacted them again. It was not until November 11th that I finally got the medication I originally ordered October 27th and in the meantime, I had been charged 2x. It is now November 22nd and I still have not received the original order yet they refuse to refund it or do anything to help locate it. Every time I contact them for assistance they seem to have no idea what is going on.
I tried putting in a claim with the postal office but was told the sender had to complete a form. When I asked them to do this the response I got was that my medication shipped over 3 weeks ago would arrive "24 to 48 hours" later than expected due to a shipping problem. It was supposed to arrive weeks ago. It is also worth noting this is the second refill in a row that I have had shipping problems with. I have used mail-order pharmacies from other providers with no issues but it is increasingly clear that the supposed convenience you get via ordering medication online is quickly lost when Express Scripts is the one doing the mailing. I can only use Express Scripts under the poor-quality insurance plan my employer offers if I want to order drugs I take all the time in quantities of 90. In my last wasted call, they flat out refused to call my pharmacy to transfer my prescriptions, nor would they call my doctor.
Prior to this maddening experience, I spent hours on the phone with badly trained, barely literate representatives who couldn't even properly pronounce the names of the medication I'm trying to order. After me telling one CSA repeatedly the my medication was "progesterone", he said he couldn't find it on their list and they may not carry it.
As you can tell by my frustration in this review, I am out of my medication, but no one at Express Scripts is worried about that. If you catch them & question them, they will lie & put you on hold for over an hour & pops up periodically to yell will be back & disappears again. Keep on checking your account the moment you get yourself entangled with this criminal enterprise called Express Scripts because they will find their way into your account stealing your hard earned money without your authorizations & acknowledge.
They are not in the business to help sick people. Express Scripts are in the business to cheat, lie & extort money from people. I think they should be closed down & prosecuted to the fullest extent of of the law. I was forced to join them because they keep blocking me from getting my meds from my local pharmacy, then I finally got my two meds sent to me & I paid them. The next thing is that I start getting bills sent to my house every week. First, I ignored it because I thought it was a mistake until I ran out of my meds & call them to find out what's going on. They told me that I owe them, so I ask them, "For what?" They said for all the meds they sent to my house, which was a lie. Not only that, they claim that they have been dealing with me for over 18 months even though I never knew anything about Express Scripts until February of this year.
I fought them because I wanted to go back to my local pharmacy. They are cheaper & you see who you are dealing with. I will never be comfortable taking or using any meds they sent to me because of the knockdown drag down fight I had with them because am scared they will poison me by sending the wrong meds to me or doing something to me. That is why I will never deal with them ever again, because of their cruelty on the phone with me knowing fully well that I really needed my meds.
Please for anyone that decides to make the biggest mistakes of their lives by joining & using this criminal extortion company Express Scripts, make sure you never allow them or authorize them to take money directly from your account. Remember to keep meticulous record of any transactions with Express Scripts. If possible do your transactions by using texts, so you can have the record of every exchange with that criminal enterprise called Express Scripts.

Express Scripts is deceptive and greedy. First, they will hound you to keep you from using your locally owned pharmacy. This does a disservice to pharmacists and small business owners everywhere. It is also against the law in some states (it is in mine). They tell you that after 3 refills the price will increase unless you use them to get your drugs via mail order. That isn’t always the case. For instance, I can get my ** for less at my local pharmacy. At the moment I can get my ** for less because my local pharmacy uses copay cards to bring my cost down while Express Scripts can’t be bothered. Even when a drug costs me a few dollars more, I’d rather give it to my hard working local pharmacist than this disgusting useless company. This leads me to my next complaint.
For next year ES has decided they won’t cover ANY PPI’s for heartburn. You must get them over the counter. ** is the only one that works for me, and this has been medically documented, but do you think they care? Nope. I will pay full price and that amount will not contribute to a deductible or out of pocket maximum. Then they have decided that no matter what your physician recommended, you will not get branded products if there is a generic equivalent that *they* deem appropriate. Who gave these jokers a medical license?? Finally, the times I have used mail order my prescriptions haven’t always made it to me and regardless of that is an ES or postal service issue, it is a problem and inconvenience when it occurs. If you have a choice (I don’t because my employer decides) do not choose Express Scripts.

I have had multiple issues with Express Scripts. Last year with a new glaucoma medication prescription, Express scripts unilaterally removed my other glaucoma medication saying that I did not need both, even though my eye doctor said both were needed and science shows that both work together in an additive manner to treat my condition. It took 5 phone calls and several hours to get the error fixed.
Now with renewal of my glaucoma medication, they send one less bottle unit to me for my 3 month supply. Again one hour on phone, told I really only need 2 rather than 3, and also told doctor made mistake, but neither were true. In the end the pharmacist admitted they made an error and an additional bottle was to be shipped to me. After two weeks, I never received medication, checking their website, they removed precipitation so I could not get it filled again. One hopes that they are not being vindictive with me by cancelling a prescription because I complained about it. Another phone call, 90 min of time and I got verbal acknowledgement that they are wrong and they will restore my prescription and send me the needed extra bottle.
I do not remember the representatives or pharmacists ever say that they were sorry for the mistakes and I had to ask them directly if they made an mistake to get a true answer. I was lied to throughout the conversations about my actual need for medications, how much I need and who was at fault. Amazingly after all this I have still not received an email stating that I will be receiving my medication that express scripts in error never sent me. So I am still waiting without much confidence that the problem has been solved. To make matters worst, when I access the express scripts website, there are multiple broken pages that are blank, for instance when I want to look at my prescription order history, or full order status there is nothing but a blank page. I called them to see why they would have shipped these meds as I have no use for them - I’ll never be able to use all of the meds I’ve received within the last 2 months, prior to them expiring. The first person I spoke to told me he wouldn’t be refunding me bc I clearly placed the order online 3 days ago & it wasn’t express scripts mistake. I was at work for 12 hours and then home taking care of my infant son until passing out myself on the day he claimed I placed an order. I insisted it was their mistake as I’m 100% positive I did not place the order and he kept insisting I did. So now, you’re calling me a liar when I am sure it’s clearly their company. We of course conveniently became disconnected.
I called back a second time and spoke with a very nice woman who explained the order was placed bc the prescription in September was my last refill so they took it upon themselves to contact my doctor and get the ok for future refills, and when they got the ok - they went and filled it and billed me for it. Without me requesting they ask my doctor for anything at all. So even though I explained they started the ball rolling by reaching out to my doctor and not contacting me once, it was still my fault and they will not return the medications or my money. So now I’m out $150 for medications I’ll never use prior to expiration.
The woman I spoke with was very nice, involved a manager and yet the company was still too ignorant to make good on their mistake... No confidence in a company that calls me a liar to cover up their mistake, then once admitting their mistake takes 0 action to make their customer whole again. I was asking for nothing more than to be made whole again but apparently that’s above the moral of their company.

They have not received the paperwork and now since it’s been since Sept 23, 2019 I have to resubmit new paperwork because they don’t have the paperwork and they will take 5 days and I asked what is the guarantee I won’t go through this problem again and Ann Marie and her script response says there is no guarantee they’ll get the paperwork because when it’s faxed it goes through a sorting process and then sent to them for further processing, however if my provider takes time away from his busy office and seeing patients and just calls them they could approve the request over the phone.
Now what doctor in the USA has the time to sit on the phone answering questions to get me approval for medication he prescribed? Also he is an approved Tricare provider. As of Oct 25, 2019 still no medication and they still want all new paperwork. I wonder what would happen if I need the medication to keep me alive?

I spent 2 weeks trying to refill my prescription through Express-Rx. After finally speaking with someone I was assured my prescription would arrive via mail-order service the next week. The medicine never arrived. I called back and was informed that to get it filled quickly, I should have the prescription transferred to a local pharmacy. Of course that came with paying a little extra, as well as additional time on my part. As expected, Express-Rx did not offer to waive the extra cost associated with filling the medication at my local pharmacy, despite the delay in filling the medication being their fault. I give them two stars because I have successfully gotten medication from them in the past, so at least sometimes they fill prescriptions properly. But they are not reliable for filling prescriptions consistently in a timely manner.

It is so much easier using a local pharmacy! I'm in a constant battle trying to get my medications through this company. DHL is their method of shipping and my packages are always delayed. Nobody ever knows anything. According to Express Scripts it's not their fault because they ship timely, DHL states it's not their fault and post office states it wasn't dropped off. Of course they have no issue in stating they can charge me again for a month supply to hold me over until it arrives, but I have to wait 5 days before they will even do that. Then it will take about a week to get that package if it even makes it to you or not delayed. You have to wait a total of 30 days before they will refund you any money and I highly doubt that will go any smoother.

This company is an absolute disaster. Because of an error with the Citibank system, I discovered I had over paid. Express Scripts outsources billing & customer service to 2 different companies. Not even can the customer service company get any results from the billing company. I have been waiting for six weeks for a refund of my money. I was told by customer service to call during work-week hours & ask for a 2nd level supervisor so that I might actually reach an Express Scripts employee for some help. Additionally they keep removing very common drugs from their formulary, which means we have to pay an exorbitant amount for common prescriptions.

Zero stars really should be an option... I have a new medication that cost me $24.99 for a month's supply at Walgreens - apparently reduced from approximately $150 because I participated in a manufacturer's discount program. Express Scripts notified me that future refills would have to go through them, not Walgreens so I sent my next Rx to them. Their web site refuses to provide cost until AFTER they have shipped the drug - either because they are dishonest, incompetent or probably both.
On receiving the medication I found that they had charged me over $400 for a three month supply - which would have cost me $75 at Walgreens. I contacted them and was told they "don't do" manufacturer rebates because "they are contracted by my insurance company". That last part is obviously complete nonsense, there is no reason why they could not but the customer service droid I spoke to had pretty limited programming and kept repeating the same thing. The bottom line is if you have any way to avoid dealing with this clown car of a company you should take it.

If you can get by with not using this "specialty pharmacy" DO IT. Save yourself the headache. This company is nothing but incompetent. From person to person, the entire staff, every phone call, every bit of communication you might have with them is absolutely useless. They do not put notes on client profiles, there is miscommunication abundant in which one person shows they have a document on file, and the very next person (literally five minutes - on hold - later) shows there is no document and it will have to be submitted. One person will tell you they are waiting on a call from the doctor's office, and when the doctor's office calls they say they are waiting on information from the patient. And all of that will happen in an hour's time.
My medication is insurance approved, but I can not get it and have been "living on" samples from my doctor's office for almost two months now. Because of Express Scripts. They will tell me (and the doctor's office) the prescription is being filled and I will receive a call for shipment confirmation, and turn around thirty minutes later and that phone call is an automated message saying that my ENTIRE prescription has been canceled and all paperwork from the doctor's office will have to be re-submitted. FIVE TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED IN UNDER TWO MONTHS. Misinformation, obfuscation and denial, there is no other way to describe this company. I don't understand how they are in business and making money. It has to be a complete scam company. When politicians talk about pharmaceutical companies pocketing insurance money and denying prescriptions at the same time, this is the exact company they are talking about.

I’m about ready to pay that price to never have to deal with this incompetent company again. I have been trying since July to get this filled with them and have spoken to no less than 6 representatives. Each time, they have some excuse for not filling my order, usually blaming my doctor. When I have contacted the doctor, they call bs on the company and assure me that they have followed all of the company’s instructions.
During my last call with Express Scripts, I told them to get it together by the end of this week and get me my medicine, or I will be calling an attorney and suing them for withholding my medication because they are now blocking my access at my local pharmacy. If I could give this company negative stars I would. Every problem that has come up in my 10 months with them has involved multiple cases of representatives contradicting each other from call to call. It reminds me of the insurance company in that movie where their first response is to deny every time in the hopes that people just pay or do whatever to get their meds and Express Scripts won't have to pay. The amount of times I've been told this year about medication changes or even them challenging what our doctor has prescribed are too numerous to count. Who the hell do your pharmacy phone techs think they are questioning the medications my doctor has prescribed and that my pharmacist has no problem filling?
But beyond the audacity to question my prescriptions without validity, the fact that every rep has a different story but one that inevitably ends with "your pharmacy did it wrong" when my pharmacy has managed to keep from killing me for 21 years through multiple insurance plans and doctors is just amazing. Stop trying to be a pharmacy, whether a prescription is approvable should be a simple, yes the plan covers or no the plan doesn't cover and not coming up with new reasons to change things every month.

The online ordering system is not user friendly as a Cigna held entity. Express-Scripts is the drug benefit provider third party vendor for approvals of drugs provided by physicians. The people on the phone are not pharmacy technicians. When you get a prescription filled it is sent to pharmacy and Express-Scripts approves the order and knows the number of refills. Yet they have you call them directly and have them then call the doctor to place another order after 3 refills. Yet they have the drug already in their system and the number of refills based upon the initial order placed by the doctor. Then their order system does not show which drug is being filled in the pending order status when you look at the view order.
It also doesn't list the cost of the drug even though they have a formulary that they have based upon the drug plan the patient has. Finally, I think I had to speak to a dozen people to straighten out exactly what I needed ordered and for what and still don't exactly get any idea of how their ordering system works. At no time do they make it easy on the patients or the physicians.

I can only find my meds in a pharmacy in another state in a mom and pop shop and I used to send my husband on a two hour trek each month to get them. He finally said it was too much for him and I gave up and decided to have my scripts sent to Express Scripts. I saw that they received the orders on 10/7 and I realized that they were going to be shipped standard, which would take way too long, so I called to have it switched to overnight and was told that I could not do that because the scripts were in the back pharmacy already (same day???).
Anyway, I called today for an update and they stated that the meds were not going to ship until Monday and at a standard rate, could take a week to get to me. That makes my meds now two weeks past their due date and that's if I get them. This was such a big mistake! I also run into the same problem others on here do; getting refills shipped so early I end up with tons of certain meds while not having others. I just don't get it.

My thought is too little, too late. I still stand behind my initial review. Trying to “resolve my issue” or help me after the fact is not helpful. Be prepared for them to respond by asking you for personal information.
Original review: The last 4 years I have had to use Express Scripts because our insurance requires it. The past year, every time I have sent in my prescription I have had new issues and problems. The last (3) refill times I have had to pay for overnight shipping to get the meds before they ran out only to need to go around the world and call and call Express Scripts to deal with issues. After paying for overnight shipping my newest problem is that my meds must be signed for.....after 4 years, this is totally new to me and of course I didn’t know beforehand and now they are headed back to Express Scripts because no one is home to sign for meds we have never had to sign for before. I am begging my insurance company to allow me to pick them up local next time I am due a refill. It will be worth every penny extra. Very very disappointing!

From my informal review of other pharmacies and mail order drug companies, this is not uncommon. Screenings for outstanding FDA warnings to the manufacturers of drugs are generally not performed for drugs that are sold to customers. Sounds like something AAR and Government officials should look into.
Original Review: Oct. 3, 2019
I recently received a prescription refill for **, 5MG from Express Scripts. The medicine that they sent me was manufactured by Aurobindo Pharma Limited, which on June 20, 2019, received a FDA warning letter concerning significant violations of FDA regulations with regard to their manufacturing practices for drugs. This manufacturer is located in India. Express Scripts said they would refill this prescription from a different manufacturer only if my doctor writes another prescription specifying a manufacturer (that does not have any outstanding warnings from the FDA). Biocon or Recipharm are examples of manufactures of this drug that do not have warnings or recalls from the FDA.
Express Scripts advised me that they do not sell drugs that are on the FDA recall list. I think Express Scripts should also not sell drugs to customers that come from manufacturers that have outstanding warnings from the FDA. The onus should be on Express Scripts to screen drug manufactures for FDA warnings and not their customers.

On July 23, 2019 I posted a review on this page regarding what happened to our family regarding a prescription that my son has taken for years. Express Scripts could have sent this prescription called ** at a charge of $25.00 but instead sent **; a prescription that costs $187.50. Initially I was angry with the neurologist because Express Scripts was adamant that the doctor called in as **. The doctor’s office provided us with information that was contrary to what ES stated.
To be clear, I posted on this forum on July 23rd, and I even spoke with a live person who assured me, after I requested it, that we would be provided with a call BEFORE any future prescriptions were mailed. Yesterday, we received the same prescription for the same amount. We were floored considering what we had been told by ES office personnel. They now claim they credited the first charge as a courtesy but won’t assist this time. The argument is that they have a recording of the doctor or his office calling it in. I countered again that WE didn’t ask for it, and reminded them about the previous conversation where I was told a call would be made before any more prescriptions were sent to our address.
They are awfully good about offering apologies, but certainly lack in credibility. I am appalled that supervisors at ES are unaware that people working in customer service are telling customers they will make calls to avoid issues like this in the future. It causes unnecessary frustration for the families, and it is making the ES business look more increasingly bad and sneaky.
I said it before: based on the numerous negative reviews which almost all say “Be aware” or “Do not trust”, I believe that ES is a scam company profiting big time by switching prescriptions at their discretion. All it would take is one call. I have one call, too. It’s called an attorney. I won’t accept their answer, and because they don’t know me from Adam, ES has no idea how much I am like a dog with a bone when I believe I have been wronged. For anyone else on here reading this, please feel free to respond if you are interested in a civil lawsuit. My name is Amy ** and I live in Leland, Illinois. Thank you.

My favorite was waiting 45 minutes to speak to a pharmacist who told me that one of my prescriptions - for alcohol swaps (which are READILY available at any drug store) could not be processed because the Dr. wrote the quantity for 50 pads and Express Scripts only carries boxes of 100 pads. SO SEND EXTRA.
My other favorite is when a supervisor told me that my prescription could not be processed because my Dr.'s handwriting was illegible. My Dr. had submitted the prescription ON-LINE. Every employee at Express Scripts lies and then passes you off to another person to avoid doing any work. After poor customer service, I usually don't bother to leave feedback because it just takes more time reviewing and re-experiencing unpleasant experiences, but if I don’t speak out, I worry that large corporations are taking over smaller more competent, decent companies. I hope this helps if anyone needs to deal with Express Scripts. In total my phone call took 3-4 hours and I was rerouted 8 times, in very confusing, misleading and repeated ways.
#1: I started the phone call around 9 am with Ms. L on Express Scripts customer service line, 1-800-440-0478 when my son was rejected for life saving medication from the pharmacist. The pharmacy told me I could only get one supply of **, and he needed one for school and one for home for emergency use. I was told I had to pay out of pocket for the other set, which was around 350 dollars.
I’ve been to the ER multiple times due to life threatening reactions and he had to have an ** at school because the reactions can occur very suddenly and death is a possibility if the ** is not injected in time. Past years, as many as 200 children have died due to anaphylaxis, and if a pen is given too late, the reaction is not reversible. Calling 911 is required after use. We also need to have a full set of 2 ** as soon as we leave the hospital, because of the risk of biphasic reactions (meaning we need to leave with a full prescription in case the allergic reaction comes back in 8-12 hours). I have needed to use two pens in the past when one pen was not enough. I was told I had to wait several days until the insurance would cover it for the second kit, or pay $350 for the kit he needed at school.
#2. Ms. L rejected my request for two kits and I requested to be transferred to a supervisor. Ms. T.H., the supervisor, did not seem very friendly, and spoke in a monotone, flat, distant voice and was not helpful. After repeating the same information from Ms. L practically verbatim, Ms. T would not offer any further assistance.
#3 After I made many repeated attempts for Ms. T to assist me further, and Ms. T attempt to have me get off the line, Ms. T agreed to connect me and stay on the line as I spoke to a pharmacist, Ms. K. who simply told me the same information my doctor already wrote. “2 kits for 30 day supply, 1 for home, 1 for school.” After giving me the information, I thanked the pharmacist and she left the line, and returned to the phone call with Ms. T.
Considering the information was exactly the same wording my doctor had already prescribed, I felt Ms. T intentionally routed my call to waste my time and to try to get me off the line without assisting me. What a frustrating and disappointing experience when I am fighting for the safety and life of my child. Ms. T several times clearly expressed she just wanted to get me off of the line. Repeatedly and emphatically, Ms. T kept repeating over and over, “Now is that all I can help you with today.”
When I ignored her attempts to rush me off the line. Ms. T just continued to repeat the line above. Ms. T refused to assist me in any other way and I said that I wanted to speak to her supervisor or write a letter of complaint. I told her that if anything happened to my son that I would want Express Scripts to be responsible, and to have written proof of the rejection of life-saving medication that my doctor prescribed. I asked repeatedly to speak with her supervisor, which she refused. She just sat on the line and kept repeating her “line.” I asked for her identifying information so I could complain, and she refused other than giving me her first name and initial. I asked for her CEO or president, and she refused to give me information. I wanted to write a letter of complaint, and she would only give me a P.O. Box with no one to address the letter to. P.O. Box 3610. Dublin, Ohio 43016-0307.
Ms. T practically yelled the address at me and when I asked her to repeat she paused for a very long time and I thought she had hung up. She then said it so quickly, I had to ask her repeatedly to repeat the address and spell the words. I had to ask her to repeat at least 4 times. At a certain point, Ms. T stopped speaking for a very long time again and I thought she had hung up on me. She would give no other information. I looked up Express Scripts company online and asked her to confirm if this was her company and if the names featured were officers in her organization. She refused to confirm. She would only confirm that the online address was her company address.
After just sitting on the line for a long time refusing to offer any other help, I agreed to be transferred to a Mr. J to supposedly file an “appeals” by phone. I asked her if I could do the appeal right now as my son needed both pens, or how long the appeal would take. She would not answer me. This rerouting to “appeal” was misleading and not an appeal, just another person who said, “No” in another way.
#4. After being transferred to Mr. J.K., he read some information in a monotonous tone and did not address me and just started bluntly asking me two questions. He did not even say, “hello, or how are you…” He just cut right into questions, and did not even bother to ask me any other information. He just asked something like 1. Is this lapse due to being on vacation and missing medication? or 2) Are you or are you planning to travel out of state? The questions had no explanation and seemed to come from no where.
When I answered very confusedly “No,” Mr. J read off to me in the same monotonous unemotional tone that I was rejected. I asked him if this was the appeal, because this was what Ms. T told me I was calling for. He said I could appeal after receiving a letter. I told him this was life-saving, and I could not wait for an appeal not knowing how long it would take. I then realized that this was not even an appeal. I was mislead by Ms. T that this phone call process was an appeal. I was upset and asked to speak to his supervisor.
#5. Ms. C. was actually kind, understanding and pleasant on the phone, and I was so grateful for her. Everyone previous spoke almost in a robotic way. She suggested that I call Clinical Appeals. She said this number would help me get started on the appeal, give me information on the length of the appeal. She said I would need clinical notes for the appeal. She gave me the EPA 1-800-753-2851.
#6 Mr. **, the gentleman at Clinical appeals, was also kind and pleasant and tried to be helpful but was also a very confusing experience. He said, something to the extent that he couldn’t offer more than the plan. I had difficulty understanding him, but at least he tried to be helpful. He said that this was the wrong branch and that I should do an administrative appeal. I told him I had been routed all over and that he was the 6th person I was talking to. I asked Mr. ** if Mr. J.K. had already put in my appeal, and Mr. ** said this was not an appeal yet. He gave me a case number. He gave me another number to call for an administrative appeal 800-946-3979.
#7 Ms. K, the administrative appeals, appeared to have been in the same branch as my original first phone call. I asked her about whether I was appealing, and she explained that they merely gave me a number, and there was no appeal, and that I would have to write in for an appeal. She said I should ask for a “benefits coverage review administrative appeal.” This seemed to be exactly where I started. It looked like they had put me through an endless circle of confusing misinforming phone calls. After multiple hours, beaten down, by their “pass the call” technique, I called the 1-800-946-3979 number I was given.
#8 Ms. T finally clarified and explained that I had not filed a complaint or an appeals in all of the hours I was on the phone with 7 different people. She said I needed to file a Benefits Coverage Review. She said that no one can tell if I needed a clinical or administrative appeal except for people higher up in the system. She gave me a fax number to file an appeal, and another PO Box 66587. St. Louis, Missouri 63166-6587. She suggested I write “2 kits in 1 day supply 1 home and 1 home” so that I would not be rejected and need to pay for the second kit out of pocket. She even ran the prescription through to make sure that I would not be rejected the next time I tried to fill the prescription. So after 3-4 hours, 8 different people, I finally was able to fight to get the correct life-saving prescription for my son, by paying two copays.
I really felt this was extremely unjust. I understand ** has gone under a lot of justified criticism for raising the cost of their life saving **. Just wanted to spread the word of the way corporations like the ** and Express Scripts treat people when they are in need and ill. It’s really wrong that it would take anyone 3-4 hours, to have to fight, argue, and struggle to just get coverage for medication that would save the life of their child.

I explained that I had had it and I was so sick and I needed to speak to somebody not a level two rep not a pharmacist because they are all uninformed, unknowledgeable and you get a different story with every person or department you talk to. So after explaining how sick I was she said, "Oh well. You can get an emergency supply!" SERIOUSLY IN THE SIX WEEKS PRIOR NOBODY EVER MENTIONED THAT??? Then more recently I had to have a controlled substance called in and that was a bigger nightmare that I can't even go into 'cause I don't have enough space on here!
Long story short again the medicine was late both months in a row! I talked to some of the rudest managers when trying to rectify this problem. I talked to corporate NUMEROUS times! I filed formal complaints at least 5 times and was to get a callback to no avail (AGAIN). ANYTIME I TELL A PHYSICIAN THAT THE RX HAS TO BE CALLED INTO EXPRESS SCRIPTS THEY CRINGE!!! What does that tell you?
So I took matters into my own hands since Express Scripts thought they would just ignore the repeated problems. I'm filing a complaint with the Attorney General in my state. Just because they're cornering the market does not give them the right to treat people this way and screw with their physical health!!!! I WOULD NOT... WILL NOT... EVER, EVER, EVER RECOMMEND THIS ** TO ANYONE!!!! WHAT A JOKE!!!! F- at best.

My husband is retired military and we have been with Express Scripts mail in for years via his TRICARE/CHAMPUS coverage. We have never had an issue and on those rare occasions when we've contacted them via telecon their reps have been courteous, professional, competent and extremely helpful. Further, their online capability is extremely "user-friendly" and easy to navigate. We also get email notifications of upcoming shipments/changes. Very easy to log in to our accounts and see where we're at. They also notify our providers when a prescription is expiring/needs renewal. We think Express Scripts is GREAT.

If I could give ZERO stars, that is what they would get from me. Several years ago I had the worst customer service experience of my life from Express Scripts. I needed a prescription refill for a med I had been taking for quite a while. It was my first refill in a new coverage year. I had the same insurance as the previous year. They claimed I did not have coverage. I contacted my insurance company & they assured me my coverage was current. I spent over a week on the phone with them daily for hours trying to get them to acknowledge my insurance coverage & send me my refill. I had to get an emergency prescription to cover because I was going to run out. I talked to everyone including higher ups who failed to help. I was literally in tears trying to get them to help me. Finally, after hours & hours on the phone they acknowledged that I did indeed have coverage & sent the refill.
The next year my insurance changed to a different mail order pharmacy. I was so relieved. I swore I would never use Express Scripts again. Last year my medicare advantage plan started using express scripts for their mail order. I am paying a premium copay to use a local pharmacy instead of Express Scripts mail order. In reading their latest reviews it appears that is a good decision since their reviews continue to be horrible for their customer service with the very same issues being reported. I would rather eat dirt than use Express Scripts again, ever!

Updated on 09/23/2019: Have you wondered what resolution in progress was? I did (original review 9/17). Now I wish I didn’t know. Company responds. That’s good. They respond much quicker here - 4-6 days if you email them. I received 3 emails here in fewer days. Guess that’s good? (it’s not). These people have our personal information. That is frightening. As frightening as the horrible stories here of people in pain, fighting to get their medication.
With a company that does not care - about their “valued member” (God do I hate that phrase on their communication) or health and wellness. They may be the reason many of us need, or will need, medication. Good luck, fellow hostages to Express Scripts. I wish you better experiences and good health. Ask for a variety of info including member ID! Date of birth!! Waiting for them to ask for my social security number???? These people have our personal information. That is frightening. No respect for confidentiality.
Original Review: It’s been a couple years since Express Scripts were forced upon us through insurance. And I recently had my first experience, and am dreading that this is what we’ll have to endure. Not receiving medication. Medication delivered to wrong address. Circular loop of hell trying to communicate with them. I gave up. Fortunately the medication I was getting wasn’t a medical or life necessity - I’m afraid if I had to rely on them for a necessary medication I’d be sicker. Or dead. My complete empathy for those who have posted that NEEDED their medication. I do not find Express Scripts convenient. Nor are they reliable. It appears big business profits are being put ahead of patient health. And that saddens, frightens, and angers me.
A slightly humorous story - ironically humorous - capped off my experience today. Received a form letter from a concerned Express Scripts physician???? I received a pain med prescription 2 1/2 weeks ago. Fortunately only needed one before I was able to manage with OTC. I know risks of opioids - and Express Scripts communicating that isn’t a bad thing. Opioid addiction is real; and prescriptions are largely to blame. But seriously, 17 days after I filled prescription I get a letter warning me of risks - they were about 10-14 days late if I needed that warning. I would have already have become dependent upon it at that rate. I don’t want a pharmacist in some other state. I don’t want to communicate about my medical needs via email. Or with someone working in a call center.
Those things are not helpful. And frankly I don’t think it’s very confidential. I’d research if their call centers and emails are even HIPAA compliant. But in the end it doesn’t matter because I have NO CHOICE. And I don’t appreciate that. And I’ll end where I started - I have experienced everything that can go wrong, going wrong the first time I was forced into using Express Scripts. And I dread the future because I have to use them. I have no intention of using them if I can avoid it. And hope by the time I need medication regularly, Express Scripts are not required. And I’m sorry for anyone who has to use them for life-sustaining meds (reading reviews brought tears to my eyes many times). When you’re not well, that’s the last time you need added stress like this.

I have ordered from Express Scripts for a couple of years without issue. I recently refilled my 5 prescriptions in the same manner that I always do. In the past, all prescriptions have been placed under one order, and I choose to have the expedited shipping at $12.00 (because my insurance does not allow prescription refills to be ordered more than a week before they run out and the 3-5 business day shipping cuts it close). This time. However, I did nothing different in refilling, yet my order was arbitrarily divided into 4 separate orders without notification to me, each with the $12.00 shipping charge, for a total of $48.00 for just shipping.
I tried to cancel, but despite the fact that 3 of the 4 orders are not scheduled to ship for 4-5 days from the time I placed the order, I was told they cannot cancel the order or change the shipping because it was "already in process." Customer service did not care, and blamed me for placing the order. I am stuck with them for this round of refills, but will likely look elsewhere. Be careful if in the past you only got charged one shipping cost-their shipping policies seemed to have arbitrarily changed and Express Scripts does not care one bit.

Since CIGNA has bought Express Scripts in 2018, I have had several problems with prescriptions that I've had for years and they want a "call from the doctor" for whatever reason they want a call. This never bothered me until this week. I was scheduled to get blood pressure meds from Express Scripts but they had asked for more information from the doctor. The doctor sent them a new prescription but they still want to talk to him.
I am leaving for a 4-week vacation on Thursday and so I have to get the doctor to write another prescription, take it to a local pharmacy and get it filled and pay for it out of my own pocket. Since this is a government program, I am writing my congressman with the hope that we can got our scripts from any other company than CIGNA. If you have complaints, that are not resolved with one phone call, you really need to get your congressman or woman involved, that's what they are for, and maybe we can get some better service.

My husband has high blood pressure. For years his doctor always sent his prescription to Walgreens electronically with no problem. About a week ago, we received a letter from Express Scripts saying that they will no longer cover long-term prescriptions filled at retail pharmacy. It went on to say if we want our long term prescriptions to be covered we have to get it directly through them with mail in order. They provided their website and phone number. I went to Express Scripts' website, it already had my husband medication listed. It gave me an option to request for mail-in order online. I completed and submitted. A week past no answer. I called them - they provided me with 1888 number. They told me that the doctor has to call that number to set up the mail in order. I gave the info to the doctor. They tried and failed.
Yesterday, my husband had a follow appointment, the doctor change his med. We provided the info to the doctor for him to try sending it to Express Scripts again. A day went by, nothing. I called the doctor's office today, they said they called the number but could get the order completed. And my husband is down to his last pill (his old BP med) and no more refills on that old prescription at Walgreens. I called Express Scripts. A bunch of talk, no help. I called the doctor again, they told me to come get a manual prescription. I went and got the prescription, called Express Scripts. This time the guy told me the only thing I can do is go online, print and complete the mail-in order form and mail it along with the prescription to the mailing address provided.
I explained to him my husband is on his last pill. This morning his BP ready was 165/110. He cannot be without his med. I asked him how long the order will take. He said about 2 weeks. I asked him if I can go fill it at Walgreens instead. He ask me if the prescription on hand is for 30 days or 90 days supply. I told him 90. He said if I take it to Walgreens, the prescription I "will waste the prescription" because Walgreens can't supply me with 90 days - they can only do 30 days.I asked if they have any network pharmacy I can take the prescription to directly. He said no, "you have to mail it". I explained to him how frustrating his response is.
This is so unethical, they want us to wait "approx 2 weeks" go get medication that we need ASAP. My husband is paying for that crap insurance at his job. Every 2 weeks they are deducting $203 from his pay and this is what he's getting. This not right. Express Scripts need to stop depriving patients the access to medication when they are needed. This is a life-threatening situation. My husband should not have to wait 2 weeks to get his blood pressure medication. Express Scripts is a fraud and scam. I feel so scammed right now.

I explained to her what I had been through only for her to tell me she needed to speak with my doctor's offices to get the prescription information. Which I had been told in previous call that the information had been received. Then another call was told that was incorrect information. My doctor, who is impeccably prompt, sent the renewal four times at my request, both electronically and over the phone. Express Scripts reps claimed they never received them because of hurricane Dorian, in spite of the fact that their offices are in MO and my Dr. I are in MA. They are incompetent, difficult to deal with, and they emails tell you you meds are on the way then you need a refill then you need to verify address all to find out weeks later your doctor didn’t approve the refill request. At first they said it needed prior authorization, even though they have been filling this prescription for several years. So I had to take the medication they substituted (even though I had used it in the past and knew it would not work as well). Then, after that, my doctor tried again.
This time they said that ** was not available for mail order. I only use mail order because EXPRESS SCRIPTS REQUIRES IT. They have just denied this refill and have not provided any other methods for me to get this medication. My insurance is very expensive (over $1500 per month) even though I am employed full time. A week later I received a text saying 3 prescriptions had been shipped. I called to ask why medicines were being shipped and why I had been charged $120.00 without my knowledge. Today I received another text that 3 more medications were being shipped again without my knowledge. I called the first shipment and was told an email had been sent and that I could just call when I received the emails to tell them not to ship my medications.
I never received the emails the first or the second time. When I called today to ask how I could be shipped 6 medications without my knowledge I was told the Dr had sent in the prescriptions so they filled them. Express Scripts REQUESTED the prescriptions! My Endocrinologist procured a new pump, a "Medtronics Minimed 630G" through "Tricare" that used a different glucose monitor (Contour Next) and test strips.
Express Scripts denied the new prescription for Contour Next test strips stating that they did not consider the new test strips a medical necessity. The supervisor stated that Express Script required my Endo doctor to go online and justify to them why I needed the test strips. In their eyes, I guess that the fact that I've been using another brand of test strip for years, doesn't equal a medical necessity. They will constantly stick to a policy of believing they have not made any sort of mistake when their company is the common factor in my prescription delays.

I got two of my three prescriptions, but they said I could not get ** and I would have to get my doctor to write a prescription for straight ** instead. Today when I went in to get it the pharmacist said Express Scripts said they were not primary. I called ES and they said they were correcting the eligibility issue and I could pick up my prescription. I returned to the pharmacy. The pharmacist said ES now said the prescription required prior authorization, so I left without it.
I called my doctor who told me to just download a coupon from Good RX and I could get the prescription at a very low cost. I did that and got my medication. I called ES to just express dissatisfaction with my ES experience. I asked to speak with a supervisor. She told me that the system still showed my old insurance was primary despite what the prior four customer service representatives told me. She said ES could not fix it until my old insurance company called them. I called United (my old company) and they were super.
They called ES with me on the line and told them my coverage with them ended March 30,2018. The ES representative said they were changing it in the system. I have no faith that I will not go through this whole debacle again the next time I need a prescription. Worst customer service experience with health insurance ever! The ES supervisor never apologized for all the aggravation they put me through not only with eligibility but not stating during the first attempt to get ** that not only would they not cover it, but even straight ** would require prior authorization. I think this company does not know how to -or doesn't care- to correct issues their customers have (in general). I have gone as far as written to Tricare who hires Express Scripts (for military) to voice my complaints that are not resolved. My desired outcome is with problem resolution or contract another company who can do the job. This problem may seem minor, but is a good example how they operate. I get a 90 day supply of a very small pill in a very large bottle. I think 50 times that prescription would fit in that large bottle. The problem exists when traveling by air. You are limited by space and there is no way I can legally combine or rebottle the prescription. So I asked them if they could help with this issue. The first problem is they make it very difficult to get through the phone prompts and talk to an actual live person.
The folks working there seem nice enough but not only do I get conflicting information on each of the approximately six times I have asked about this issue but they made the problem worse! Now instead of getting a 90 day supply in a huge bottle they split that amount between TWO HUGE bottles!!!! UNACCEPTABLE. I think the most correct answer I received from their customer no service is that their machines can only use one size container for their mass distribution. If that does not meet customer needs then I say to Tricare contract to another company that can adjust to the customers needs or let us fill our prescriptions at a local pharmacy. I am about problem resolution not supporting a company that is indifferent to their customers.

Yesterday we received a different medicine, **, for which we were charged $187.50! Needless to say we were alarmed and stunned and began making calls. My husband called ES and was told this was the medication the doctor called in and that the only way that specific medicine could be sent was through a pre-authorization. When my husband said we didn’t ask for this medicine, we didn’t want and we don’t feel we should need to eat the cost, ES said they will not accept it back as it is tainted. My husband said the bottle was intact and had not been opened. They refused and said, again, they only sent what the doctor prescribed and authorized. I then called the doctor’s office and left a rather scathing message.
Today the doctor’s office said they followed procedure and did not authorize a name brand. They were adamant they have documentation and were never asked for a pre-authorization. Their office went as far as to say ES was lying and scamming us of money. I then called ES and spoke with several people which ended up with me being on a conference call with a pharmacist counselor named Pishoy and a supervisor named Curley. Someone is lying, covering their butts and/or ripping us off and I won’t rest until I get to the bottom of it.
Seeing that someone else had almost the same thing happen to them just today, I’m inclined to think that ES is a corrupt company. I call for an explanation, the supervisor says, "Oh your plan allows us to charge for name brand at a higher amount so as a courtesy we filled the name brand at $10. Now it's $100." Shouldn't someone have called to say "Do you still want this because it went up in price significantly?" No! No call. So I tell them to cancel the prescription and take it off auto refill. What happens, I get the same prescription with a $100 bill. When I called to say this package is unopened and I am refusing it/sending it back - Do not bill me, they said, "Oh no we have no record of you calling!!!" Are you kidding me, if it's in their best interest, the account gets noted - if not you are screwed!
The best they would do was take 50% off, that's not good enough. You waste hours on the phone to get to a person and you get no help or acknowledgment of what has happened. They don't keep good notes and or recordings of calls unless it benefits them. Also if you have an allergy don't ask the pharmacist!? Why, because they will give you a phone number to the drug company to research it yourself....They sent me medication I was allergic to and the pharmacist said, "Well the FDA is okay with it so you should be too!!" So consumer be aware of what you are getting! It's best to pay cash for the prescription with a GoodRx coupon!!

Your management would all need to be retrained so they understand what "advocating" requires. This is not an isolated issue with your company, I have NEVER had anything close to what the basic job description of a patient advocate should be. I challenge you to review my call this morning with the two employees I dealt with and convince me that they advocated for me in any way shape or form.
Here are the specifics: I received an automated call stating that they were not going to allow my prescription and told me to call if I wanted to appeal. I called immediately, the first employee (Michelle in Bhiliens, she had a thick accent so I'm unsure of the location) had me on hold the 1st time for over 7 minutes. When I questioned why, she said the patient advocate wasn't responding to her request. When she wanted to put me back on hold I requested she stay on the line with me. She said she would, SURPRISE, she didn't! I spent another 5-6 minutes on hold.
When the patient advocate finally answered I asked why the prescription was denied, she read some generic blurb. She couldn't or wouldn't answer even a basic question. For example, "Did you contact my doctor?", couldn't or wouldn't answer. (FYI: my doctor was on call, so he was available to clarify the need for the drug). Bottom line it seems that the qualifications for being an Express Scripts patient advocate is the ability to read denial statements from a computer screen, my four year grandchildren can do that.
My husband's employer is probably one of your biggest customers. My goal is to provide them with a list of issues I've had with your company and plead that they terminate your contract or at the very least not renew. Calling customer service requires going through multiple menus with no selection to speak to a representative requiring you to say “representative“ multiple times. Once you have a customer rep on the phone they apparently can’t see what’s going on with your latest prescription. This information is apparently in a different department so you have to be transferred to them but you have to push for it otherwise they just want you to recheck in 24hrs. I would have given a zero star if the option is provide. I was with Kaiser last year and had a year-long prescription for daily hypothyroid medication from my Kaiser doctor, which will be valid till 2020. Unfortunately, my insurance had to be switched to Blue Cross and I have to use ES to have 90-day's refills. Since I have 2 remaining refills, I don't want to waste it and spend couple hundreds dollars to visit a new doctor to get a new prescription. So I called ES. At my first call, I was told that Kaiser had to call them since they are not allowed to contact outside pharmacies. This is not the common practice when it comes to transfer.
It always is that the new pharmacy calls the old pharmacy to initiate the transfer. With that being said, I called Kaiser and was told that ES had to give Kaiser a call. So at my second call, ES asked me if I still saw the doctor that prescribed the prescription. If this is not the case, then they would be not able to transfer since they can't contact the doctor whenever any questions rise of the prescription. I told them that this was my maintenance medication and would not be any issues about it. When I was questioning their reason, the operator became rude and impatient, trying to talk over me again and again. So I requested to speak to the supervisor.
The supervisor told me a completely different reason. ES doesn't transfer existing prescriptions instead they contact Dr.s to get new ones. This is something unheard of. There are valid prescriptions sitting in a pharmacy, why the doctors who are prescribed them need to be bothered. Isn't it being redundant and an unnecessary obstacle for the patients. For me, since I am not a member of Kaiser this year and the doctor can't be reached anymore, so I am stranded and not able to get my refills unless I pay extra couple dollars to visit a new doctor. ES doesn't have any considerations on their patients regardless how important the medications are to their patients' lives and how desperate their patients are.

After our insurance provider mandated we fill through Express Scripts over a year ago, we've never had a single transaction go smoothly with them. Not one. Not ever. I can understand getting off to a rock start with any new provider of any service, no matter what industry or vertical. But Express Scripts appears to simply be incompetent when it comes to, well...filling prescriptions. Get it wrong once - totally get it. Twice? I can even get that.
But we've made over 2 dozen phone calls, countless emails to them trying to get a single blood pressure medication on 'auto' refill (ANY refill for that matter) to no avail. The odds of so many foul ups happening as 'accidental' are pretty slim. I'm not saying there is a concerted effort to keep from shipping the prescriptions paid for by insurance plans, but one could make a solid argument it's happening - OR that incompetence is the culture. That Cigna paid $54 Billion for this company is dumbfounding; Express Scripts could easily be viewed as a fraudulent company considering the number of complaints and negative reviews in the on-line space. It's shocking they're still in business.

It’s honestly mind blowing at how a company can be so unwaveringly incompetent and provide such useless resolutions to issues. They have been out of stock of my medications for the last 3 months. They have now refused to stop covering my prescription if I continue to pick it up as a local pharmacy, even though they are the ones who have no means of filling the out of stock prescription. I have had to badger my physician to write the script for a smaller dosage and double the quantity since they happen to have those in stock.
I am now completely out of the medication and they refuse to mail the new script due to a pending “clinical question” they have for my PCP and they have “reached out multiple times.” Someone has not yet updated them that in 2019, a fax machine may not be the most efficient way to reach someone. Every representative I’ve spoken to either speaks incomprehensibly or places me on hold to consult with someone else with every question I have. The company has no interest or worries about your medication needs or health, please avoid if possible.

My company was hoodwinked into using Express Scripts and is nothing more than a rip off. I am a diabetic that requires 3 different injection pens as well as oral meds plus oral meds for my blood pressure as well as other conditions. They are refusing to cover my diabetic meds unless I sign up for home delivery and a 90 day supply costing close to $3000 that I have been purchasing at a local pharmacy for a $25 a month copay.
Today I received a nasty notification that the remainder of my meds are going to be denied effective next month since I have not enrolled in home delivery. Issues are I work away from home 7-8 months at a time with no safe secure place to have items like this delivered. Second issue their delivery price far exceeds the local price. Third issue I have met my out of pocket max for the year yet they are charging copays that I should not be paying. There needs to be a class action suit brought against them for price gouging.

I have had migraines for my entire 25 year career, tried a multitude of drugs that made me sicker or had no effect, NOW, I need a Prior Authorization for a problem that's been treated by the military medical system for years. I think something needs to be done to this company including a class action lawsuit. They probably think they're too big to even worry about it.
Apparently they are incapable of looking up older treatments to see what has been done in the past. Soooo, now I have to see a new doctor, waste my valuable time starting the process from the beginning... again, since according to Express Scripts morons, my primary care physician (who btw saved my life several times because of medical malpractice by a military doctor, is incapable of making treatment decisions...
Based on these peoples absolute total ignorance of my present treatments and condition. I have to remain in pain because they are so knowing... according to them. I think a class action lawsuit should be elevated in the court system and in a public forum. I think retired military personnel and families deserve something better than this rotten company.

When I received my medication this time it went from $25 to $283 per month, without notice, because they said a generic alternative became available. When I contacted them about it they told me that they do not take returns and that they do not notify the customer of changes in pricing or generic alternatives. Buyer Beware, do not expect Express Scripts business to manage, notify, or auto-renew/refill prescriptions. Learn from my mistake and do not trust that they care about the customer!

As it is right now I am to take it tomorrow and they have not shipped it.
I have filed a complaint with the professional licensure board in my state. I am hoping others with similar issues will do the same in hopes of getting this company to get their act together or at the very least have the insurance companies stop using this awful company! The agents you talk to have NO UNDERSTANDING of medications or what they need to do. Updated on 05/08/2019: This is related to another review: The drug that they shipped without prior notification was one that required refrigeration. WE DID NOT KNOW IT WAS COMING UNTIL THE DAY IT ARRIVED. This is a very expensive medication requiring refrigeration, which one would EXPECT to receive a notification about. (Eg. "The order that is due to arrive on X date requires refrigeration. Please make sure to remove from packaging and refrigerate promptly upon receipt.") The packaging itself did not say anything about refrigeration. Only in small print on the inside box did I find this information. What if we had been out of town???? What if I hadn't opened the outer box???? So irresponsible on their part. Worse than when a package of medications arrived torn open and they tried to get us to pay for replacements. (They FINALLY conceded it was their responsibility.) If I could give zero stars, I would. I'm calling our HR tomorrow to complain.
Original Review: They say that they will email BEFORE filling prescriptions in order to allow patients to stop any order, but they filled a prescription for my husband and the only notification we got was that it was shipped. They never sent a notification of receiving the request from his doctor or that they were processing it. I tried to cancel it, but they said once it was shipped, we couldn't cancel. IT'S TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS. We could get it from our local pharmacy for $25. THAT'S $175 DIFFERENCE. That's even assuming we actually want to go ahead with using this medication. Regardless, we are OUT the $200. This is not the first time that they have shipped a medication without first notifying us. Something they CLAIM they do not do. They are the worst pharmacy I have ever dealt with. We have problems with them multiple times every year.

Secondly I called on 5/1/19 for shipping confirmation and at that time it was scheduled to be shipped on 5/3/19. Still not received and now will be out of meds prior to receiving it. Since our company switched us to Express Scripts refilling my prescriptions has been a living nightmare. Express Scripts has changed Doctors' names on prescriptions, never seem to be able to contact my Doctors (I have to contact the Doctors and have them sent to ES), failed to send refills, did not contact me within the time frame stipulated by their own policies, charged me extra when I have had to refill my prescriptions locally, etc. Between ES and Accredo I am always fighting to get the drugs I need to stay alive (I am a heart transplant patient).
I am currently battling them to refill a prescription that I had sent to them over a month ago. I finally went to their website and it shows the phrase "Unable to Refill". Talking to an Express Scripts manager got me nowhere as I was told that it was handled by their sister company "Accredo" who was closed for the night. Even though the prescription was shown on the ES website. The time before they could not contact the Doctor to verify my high blood pressure medicine for over two months but never notified me of this issue. Updated 04/30/2019: After a month of getting automated "we're working on this" and "your doctor has not responded" messages, Express Scripts finally denied the prescription entirely, with yet another automated message claiming I had "reached the limit" on this medication for the year. Out of total frustration I tried to reach someone else at the company besides the "Patient Care Advocates" who had already given me little to no information as to what the problem really was. After posting a review here a day ago, the company responded privately, asking for my contact information. That triggered a "Resolution in Progress" tag posted above my review, and a member of their "Social Media Management Team" emailed me to repeat the "blame the doctor's office" excuses and promising to "look into it" further. All they had to do in the first place was notify us and the doctor in the beginning that the original prescription could not be refilled as written, instead of all the unexplained delays. As a work-around, my doctor sent a prescription to my local pharmacy so I could have my medication, and that is when I learned that it was cheaper without Express Scripts! They had been overcharging all the time I received this medicine from them by mail! I know I am fortunate to have this alternative, as others may have more expensive drugs and cannot solve their problems the same way. But I hope calling attention to these practices will ultimately help everyone.
Every negative review I have read on this site mirrors my experience with Express Scripts. Their automatic processing is a joke, it gave me a false sense that I would receive my prescriptions in a timely way and I should not have relied on it. After notifying me by email they were contacting my regular doctor for a renewal of a common generic arthritic medicine (an anti-inflammatory) already sent to me for years, they waited 21 days before sending another email claiming they would not be filling the prescription because they received no response from the doctor's office. I contacted the doctor's office myself and they faxed a new prescription the same day. Express Scripts began to process the new prescription 6 days later and held it again for "more detail from the doctor." The doctor's office told me they had already faxed more information to Express Scripts. Now this delivery is a month late.

Express Scripts has really started to go downhill in the ability to mail necessary prescribed medications timely. I believe this is top management drill down on a culture that does not believe or is trying to dictate how much and who gets necessary medications they do not agree with. If medication is pre authorized and insurance covered, why do I have to continue to fight to get this filled? Express Scripts keep up this rouse of slowing the order and delivery process, delaying and pushing back because of their own internal politics and culture on certain medications.
Each and every time I need to refill this prescription, it takes weeks to get the order processed and several phone calls with customer service who is not set up to manage these issues. This medication would be delayed and delayed until I bird dog and babysit the order to ensure they SHIP IT. It would have not shipped had I not called. I have to call several times, each and every time I refill this prescription.
Why do I need to hassle and call each and every time this prescription is to be refilled? Why is the systems set up to go slower and delay and hiccup in processing on these types of medications. Culture driven business where their internal politics are dictating what they believe is unnecessary meds. It IS NOT YOUR CALL TO MAKE. If the doctor preapproves this medication, there is a reason for it.... And if insurance agrees, FILL THE MED AND MAIL IT OUT! You are not the doctor and do not get to make the decision on my medication for me. Mail the meds out - that is your ONE AND ONLY JOB.

I was on drops to keep ocular pressure under control for years when my company was bought and my insurance changed to Express Scripts. They immediately denied the medication I had been on for years. Suggested my doctor needed to try other treatments first. My doctor tried to work with them and they would do nothing. So I had to go and get surgery to get the pressure down as the uninsured cost was 500 per month. 2 years later and the pressure is going up again. My doctor wants me on the drops again. So this time, he prescribed a new generic. You guessed it. DENIED without prior authorization. So they know more than the doctor that treats me. Now I have to get my doctor to try and work with them again. I had several prior Rx insurance companies. NONE gave me this much trouble. I hope my eyes are worth your bottom line.

This company is a disaster. They sent me cheap, unrecognizable generics of a seizure medication I've been on for years, and things have only gone downhill from there. I needed the medication before leaving on a trip, and I called repeatedly to make sure the correct version would arrive on time. Both the online service and the phone service were completely useless. They told me every time they called that they would "do their best" to get the prescription ready, and every time I followed up, I was told it hadn't shipped yet and that it was still being processed. The customer service people were rude and unwilling to help me, and didn't seem fazed by the fact that I would have a seizure if I didn't get the medication in time.
I ended up having to spend hours on the phone with my doctor, insurance company, and local pharmacy before getting an emergency vacation supply of the medication. I will never use this company again! It is absolutely not worth the 90-day supply or the cheaper rates. It seems they use whatever generic versions of medications are the cheapest for them, and I have since learned from a family member in the medical field that these companies will even sometimes import cheap meds from other countries that aren't even regulated. This makes sense, since the pills I received were white and dusty, and they almost fell apart in my hands. Stick to a local pharmacy you trust!

They ignored my phone calls and email requests to hold prescriptions until I released them, which has cost me hundreds of dollars in unneeded medications. Every time this happens, I have to call Express Scripts to try and figure out why this keeps happening. During these phone calls, I'm faced with customer service representatives who can't answer my questions and then rude management that tries to place the blame on me. When I send secure email messages through their messaging system, I never get a response. It seems that sending prescriptions without authorization should be illegal, but I'm sure Express Scripts has ways around taking responsibility for their actions.
I'm pulling all prescriptions from this company but to ensure that this doesn't happen with the information they still have in their system, I learned during my last call that they can place customer holds on all account activity to avoid this situation. What the employees stated over the phone never came into fruition. I was promised my medication, told numerous stories and promises were made only to be completely reversed the next time I would call. For example: I was told that my medication was backordered, then told it was delivered to their plant and had to be unpacked. The next time I followed up, I was told that was incorrect information. This company’s lack of concern, poor quality customer service and general indifference caused great stress. My doctor continued to send new prescription orders for other medication which took weeks to review. This occurred while I had no recourse for my much-needed migraine medication.
Finally, I received a prerecorded message from Express Scripts that after review, the medication was denied. I have had nothing but issues with this company. No matter how many times I call to address issues nothing ever gets done. I hate that this is a necessity for my insurance company. It’s almost worth paying non-insurance prices just to not have to deal with them. First, there is no auto renew. Like what the heck. I use this company for my birth control. Obviously I that it year round, 365 days. I want to just plug in my credit card information and get auto charged and not think about it and never be without my prescription. But for some reason they can’t do this. Which is absurd. This is the 21st century.
Secondly, they do not send reminders when it is time to renew, so you don’t know when you’re almost out unless you’re diligently keeping track. They swear they are capable of sending reminder emails but I have called 5 times at least over many months and have never had the issue resolved despite them allegedly having the correct email on file.
Third, because it is a joint account with multiple family members listed as dependents, for some reason it is appropriate to be sharing an account with my mother and sister. I assume because of this, my credit card was charged for my sister’s prescription. Why there was no sort of verification that needed to take place as far as a credit card code or pin for each card is ridiculous.
Fourth, today my sister received a call from Express Scripts looking for me, by name, to update me on a prescription. I called Express Scripts who assured me that they have my correct phone number on file and my sisters phone number is not linked at all to my personal account settings. So WTH!? They said, “oh maybe your sister accidentally put your phone number down in her account settings”. Which, first of all no, we’re not dumb. And secondly, if that was the case, they would be calling me looking for her, not calling her looking for me. I absolutely despise this company.
