Manages my prescription insurance, but I cannot order from them. Cost at local pharmacy for my meds is too great for me. Must be nice to get rich by killing people!

CVS Caremark knows they have a captive audience since so many companies (like my employer) use Caremark for prescription coverage for their employees. I am going through menopause and take a generic medication for estradiol -- this is not something I take because I am not taking care of my body, but due to a natural progression for women.
My first 3 prescriptions were fine, but the 4th refill has been a nightmare. My doctor submitted my prescription on March 9 to the CVS Caremark mail order service that is required for recurring prescriptions. Caremark said the prescription was out of stock and asked me to wait a few days. I did. Then they emailed my doctor and asked if there was an alternative. She said yes, I could use the name brand. CVS Caremark submitted a prior authorization for the name brand to CVS Caremark, who denied the coverage on March 24.
The prescription reverted back to generic, and the mail order pharmacy was still out of stock, so without asking us what we'd like to do, CVS Caremark just canceled the prescription entirely. I called around local CVS pharmacies and located two pharmacies in the metro area that currently have the generic patch in stock, but the pharmacists can't request a transfer because the prescription was canceled by CVS Caremark because they were out of stock. This happened on Friday, doctors don't work weekends, and my doctor is out of the office for spring break.
I am out of patches now, it's been 3 weeks of time wasted with Caremark, and their customer service makes me think they hired people who like to make people's lives miserable and then trained a bot to simultaneously waste a person's time AND infuriate them while never resolving the issue. They claim they can not reverse the cancellation, so I just have to wait until my doctor is back, get a new prescription, and hope the local pharmacies still have the patches in stock at that time. The customer service is awful.

Caremark put on the CVS app that they sent out a prescription to me on 3/12/26. I did not have insurance with them since 1/1/26. They refused to correct their error after 1 hour and 2 minutes on the phone with 5 different people. All I asked is for them to correct their error that they had sent it out. They said they didn’t have that ability, not a letter, not an email, nothing. I have to try and convince the doctor and the pharmacy that I did not get the prescription. I would not recommend them to anyone seeking a mail prescription company. It should have been a simple fix.

My child has to get infusions for rheumatoid arthritis and has been approved for years to get the medication. Recently we have been trying for months to get it because he is due for the infusion and at this point, months past due. We were denied stating that the doctor hasn't provided a reason for him to get it being under 18. This is crazy, we have already been through this and he has had it several times. Then we struggled so long trying to get CVS to approve it we thought at this point he is almost 18 so we will wait. He turned 18 then we get a call saying it's approved and to call to schedule the infusion.
When scheduling the infusion, we were told it's been denied again because they want him to have a generic form of the meds now. At this point I keep getting the run around and no one will discuss this approval with me or help and insist on only getting things from the doctor that they already have gotten from the doctor. This is the worst. He is in pain and we need the meds he has already been approved for in the past. I will recommend my company to switch to a different pharmacy insurance when they ask our feedback again.

I'm in the middle of pre-auth limbo/HELL for medication I've been taking for SEVEN years for my chronic health condition. I'm on my 5th or 6th call along with several back and forth with my doctor. The insurance company would save money by kicking these crooks to the curb and provide their clients with their required medication. It's ridiculous to put patients' health and well-being into someone's hands who is NOT a doctor. I now understand why they have lawsuits in litigation and new ones pending.

Well Surest changed over to CVS Caremark, and immediately denied me twice for not “meeting the criteria”, what a joke. I called CVS Caremark last month when the a non-CVS pharmacy denied coverage for a prescription. I escalated the call to a manager. Explained the situation (long story short): CVS NEVER has the prescription I need. It is consistently backordered. So I asked to switch it to a pharmacy that had it in stock. The manager kept insisting that I had to use CVS pharmacies. Finally she asked if I would prefer the 90 day mail order supply. I said that would be great, as long as I can actually get the prescription.
I am currently out of that prescription and used their website to see the status of that mail order she said she put in for me. Non-existent. She never did it. Now I don't have the prescription, and per usual, it's out of stock locally. When I look at how much money comes out of the paycheck to cover health and prescription benefits vs the non-existent service they provide, I am in disbelief that they are still in business. What am I paying for?

This should be a violation of my medical privacy as well as as a fraud from Anthem. I pay for the top tier policy solely so I can choose my own providers - ones I trust and know. I ordered a prescription refill from CVS Caremark and shortly after noticed that my space number was not correct, I tried to contact them to ask what I could do. They had me chat online and they stated that it would be no problem over and over again. I provided my correct space number. After the chat I checked to see if it had been changed and it was still incorrect so I went on to the site and was able to change it myself. And my medication was still delivered to the wrong space number, I called to talk to someone to get some help. That person was not able to do anything for me so another person got on the line and right away stated that it was my provider's fault that my space number was incorrect, I have had the same provider for years. They know my address, she stated that I would need to use another refill and pay for it.
Then they would give me a refund if after they investigated the claim and it was true that I did not receive my medication, no we are sorry or checking what was said on the chat conversation, after several messages I am still left without a 3-month supply of the medication. I am out the money that I paid and one less refill, this company's chat site, customer service and the attitude of the people I talked to is junk. I have ordered from Optum and my medication was always on time and never got lost, I will never order from this place and however many family and friends I can educate about how I was treated when I called by the two people and the zero outcome of my complaint so they do not make the mistake of ordering from this company.

I had insurance coverage, but CVS Caremark did not cover my medications as expected. Now they are telling me that I need to submit claims for all the medications that were previously not covered. This process has been extremely frustrating and exhausting. What’s even more concerning is that they **don’t even have records of the prescribed medications on their end**. This is alarming, because obtaining this information should be straightforward if they are properly connected to my insurance—especially since **CVS Caremark is my pharmacy through my insurance**. It’s disappointing to have insurance and still struggle to access necessary medications. The experience has made me question who was essentially taking the money that should have gone toward covering my prescriptions.
Based on my experience, I would give **0 stars** for:
* Customer service* Speed of resolving issues
* Careless and unhelpful phone representatives
* Overall service quality
Unless this company significantly improves both their technical systems and customer service, I would be surprised if they continue operating the same way over the next five years. I also plan to ask coworkers about their experiences with this impractical and unreliable service.

CVS Caremark has no concern about customers. They only care about their bottom line. PBM's which CVS Caremark is one of the largest was designed to help customers until they realized they could make a lot more money requiring people to use the drugs they get the biggest kick back for. If you have a choice don't use CVS Caremark. They control the doctors and customers and do not care about helping. I was forced to switch from Optum to CVS by my insurance. Optum was amazing. CVS so far has been a nightmare to deal with. They "lost" my prescription, after they had called me a month prior to my refill date to set everything up and make sure it would be refilled on time. They told me they would call back a week prior to needing the refill to get it sent. They never did, so I called them. They tried to tell me that they never had it, but I had the emails from them showing that they initiated setting up the account and refills. They claim they reached out to my doctor, twice, for a new prescription, even though the one that transferred had refills left, but that my doctor never replied. My doctor claims to have never received it. They finally "found" my prescription and agreed to fill it. I got an email saying the order was complete and would be shipped, but the next day they call me to go over the same things again that had already been gone over twice.
Apparently in all of the previous calls they didn't mention that they had to have a credit card on file before being able to ship anything. They finally agree to ship it, but neglected to tell me that a signature is required (Optum had the option not to). Had they mentioned that, I would have had it shipped to my work, but once it was shipped it could only be changed to have it held at a FedEx location on the same route as where I live--which is not close to my house and the opposite direction of work. The person at the counter of where it was held said that CVS was supposed to send me a QR code allowing for the package to be released to me, but they never did. They texted, called and emailed me saying I just needed an ID. The guy wasn't going to give it to me, but after a half-hour of trying to figure out a way to do so, he just agreed to let me have it.
Overall, it took over a week, 6 phone calls, and a fax from my doctor directly to them to get the prescription filled. It arrived 3 days after my last dose ran out, so I missed those days. They also shipped it in a giant cooler box, after telling me it required no refrigeration. Unlike Optum, they don't use recyclable materials for the cooler or ice packs. Optum uses frozen plant food and natural fiber insulation, while CVS ships in a non-recyclable foam cooler. I had asked if I could avoid all of the packaging by just picking it up in-person at a CVS near where I work and I was told it is packaged in a cooler regardless of where it is picked up. Expensive and wasteful! I would submit the receipt to prove that I'm a verified buyer, but that part of their useless web portal is down.

First, we are forced to use CVS Specialty Pharmacy for certain prescriptions. CVS claims this model is more cost-effective, but in reality it has resulted in higher costs for customers than using other pharmacies. Being required to use an in-house pharmacy while paying higher out-of-pocket costs feels unfair and misleading.
Second, customer service has been an ongoing issue. Each time we call for support, we encounter long hold times and representatives who seem unable to resolve even basic issues. We are frequently told that accounts cannot be located, systems are having problems, or that the representative has been dealing with the same issues all day. Calls often end without a clear resolution, requiring us to start over with another representative later. Between higher prescription costs and unreliable customer support, CVS Caremark has added unnecessary stress and expense to managing our healthcare. No one is ever able to help and always transfers you to someone else that can't help. Every person has a different story. I have been without a life-saving medication since Dec 26 and they couldn't care less that it keeps getting delayed because of their incompetence and red-tape. Optum always offered a 2 week bridge supply for issues related to delivery, it is "not CVS policy" i.e affects their bottom line. So here I am on week 4 with no meds, they continue to change their story every time-- Today it's the Dr. office fault.

Medication that I had been on for years since my body doesn't produce the hormone. I was never notified by the company that it would be an issue. I only found out 2 days after requesting a refill and that was actually by the pharmacist.
This company is terrible. I don't know why yet another middle management company needs to be involved. If you have a choice do not use this company and voice your opinion to your employer. They flat out rejected coverage for a prescription for an urgent medical problem that was even on their list of conditions to cover it. When I complained, they told me I could file an appeal that would be answered within 30 days - as if it is reasonable to wait that long when you need medication for an acute illness.

I know this is absolutely not politically correct so I'm apologizing in advance for calling CVS Caremark **. During the upheaval of relocation, I either didn't receive or missed a notification. Either way, a script was filled but wasn't able to be picked up. While on the phone I asked for the script to be filled but transferred to a location near me to be picked up.
The rep insisted that I MUST fill the script and pick it up at the original pharmacy location. Then, further stated that, otherwise, a transfer would take 3-5 business days, which made less than ZERO sense. [This is for a maintenance med, mind you.] So I asked "what if I'd relocated to the another part of the country, would I need to fly back to pick it up? Proximity was not a part of the conversation, this person was just not thinking at all. The response? Crickets. Literally, dead silence. I felt like I was being trolled hard so I requested escalation to someone with the authority to think independently. At the end of the day, it's night. I got it done but the rabbit hole they forced me down was the definition of insanity. If I could opt out, I wouldn't patronize CVS for a pack of gum.

CVS Caremark is slow, they will intentionally delay your prescription requests, require prior authorization, limit supply, question prescribing details, question “why do you need this much medication?”, force you to wait on ridiculous long holds when you call, ask for “additional information” before processing a simple refill among other delay tactics. Their app, which they prefer you use over other means of contact, is buggy, unreliable, and constantly under maintenance or “connectivity issues” without explanation. Their browser portal is difficult to navigate and usually includes vague or incomplete information. I have zero confidence every time I place an order or refill, which forces me to constantly monitor them so that I don’t run out of my maintenance medications. Other than that, they are great <sarcasm intended>.

My wife went to the ER with active vomiting symptoms, she got administered an IV to rehydrate and some anti-nausea meds were administered during the 4-hour visit. The doctor ordered anti-nausea prescriptions through CVS Caremark for Tamiflu and Promethazine. Her symptoms remained stable for the first 24 hours so we didn’t fill the prescriptions. Today her nausea returned and she tried to fill her Promethazine script (she opted to not use Tamiflu) only to discover that the ER staff sent the prescriptions to CVS Caremark for MAIL ORDER FULFILLMENT…and the eta for the anti-emetic medication to arrive is January 3-6!!!
Is it obvious to say that a person needing immediate relief from nausea and vomiting can’t wait 7-9 days for a mail-order prescription to arrive? CVS Caremark (844-443-4279) told me that with my wife’s consent, they’ll cancel the mail order and facilitate a transfer of the script to my retail pharmacy. I asked careful follow-up questions of the CVS phone agent to double check that we weren’t canceling the PRESCRIPTION ITSELF, merely the mail order delivery method. Once the agent reassured me that was the case, I got my sick wife on the phone to give verbal consent to cancelling the mail order.
About 15 minutes later, my local pharmacy called CVS Caremark to effectuate the script transfer. The agent told my pharmacist Sorry, THE PATIENT CANCELLED THE SCRIPT. Tell them to contact their doctor for NEW SCRIPT. FALSE! FALSE!! FALSE!!! 4 hours later, we are still slogging through multiple phone calls to weekend providers and pharmacy tech to generate a new script as the patient continues to battle vomiting/nausea without the aid of the PROMETHAZINE script that the ER doc wrote. Conversation with CVS Caremark occurred 12/27 11:15 am eastern time. Patient’s DOB is ** and their name is **.

It is extremely frustrating to deal with this vendor. My insurance requires me to use this vendor for cost savings, and the vendor requires 90-day mail-order prescriptions. Every time I refill, they ship via USPS. My most recent order was filled on December 5, but as of today, December 22, I still have not received the package. USPS tracking shows that it is currently in Alaska.
I have called CVS Caremark more than five times. Each time, they either tell me to contact USPS or suggest that I ask my doctor to send the prescription to a local pharmacy. I explained that I did this last time, and as a result, I had to pay extra out of pocket. I also mentioned that my previous mail-order delivery took more than three weeks, and I asked whether it would be possible to refill my prescription earlier to avoid running out. The answer was no. I do not understand why they cannot use a more reliable shipping service such as FedEx, or allow an early refill when delays are clearly recurring. Instead, I am expected to repeatedly contact my doctor and pay additional out-of-pocket costs. Meanwhile, they have no hesitation in collecting my monthly insurance premium.

I switched over to CVS pharmacy through my health insurance company to get my prescriptions delivered to my home because I thought it would be an easier and seamless process. It has been anything but that. CVS has left a gap in my medication for 2 prescriptions that are not negotiable for my health. The link provided to the CVS app is different from the one connected to my insurance company and hard to access, even though I’m computer savvy. And the customer support overall is abysmal. I have had to get my doctor to send a prescription to my local pharmacy to cover the gap between delivery times and pay for them out of pocket. This is a great way to save the companies money by eeking out medication with gaps. I’m sure it adds to their profits at the expense of their patients. But it shouldn’t have to be that hard.
I worry that those who don’t have the ability to navigate through the system or don’t have the good fortune to have an excellent doctor who is easy to reach and responsive. This has created extra work for me, my doctor, and the customer support team of my insurance company. CVS provides an AI generated messaging service if I can find their website. For starters, I only write reviews when an experience is exceptionally bad — and this one earned it. They get one star only because the system requires at least that, and I’m sure most people feel the same. This was hands down the worst customer service experience I’ve ever had. While trying to register a new account, the website rejected my (standard-format) phone number, offered no guidance, and then locked me out after two attempts with a 30-minute timeout. Several fields were prefilled but still required manual clicking — as a software developer, I’ve never seen interns produce something this poorly designed.
Calling support didn’t help. First, I navigated a menu asking whether I was a member, doctor, or pharmacist, only to be dumped into an AI agent that made me re-enter everything. Then I was transferred to a “human” representative who sounded like a text-to-speech engine. They repeatedly mispronounced my name and needed me to spell every detail multiple times — I had to spell my name more than five times alone. I’m exhausted by this dystopian, low-effort future we ended up stuck to. If I had a choice of providers, this would be a hard no. At this point, CVS is firmly relegated to “meds only” in my book.

I have spent hours and hours which equate to days on the phone with them! I have Blue Cross Blue Shield for medical and Caremark for my prescription coverage. This is insurance through my employer, so that is what I have. For the last over a year and a half almost 2 years I have been fighting them. I’ve had some surgeries and health issues and maxed out my out-of-pocket both in 2024 and at the end of January 2025. Since that time I will go to pick up a prescription at Walgreens and when they submit it to Caremark, even though my prescriptions are supposed to be zero right now, I will get random charges on various prescriptions of mine. It is never the same prescription that has the charge. I may have a couple that are zero and then I will get a charge on another one at the same time.
Every time I call, I have to go through the story again. I have dealt with managers, upper escalation, multiple audits, and Blue Cross on the phone with me while we are trying to explain it to them that I met my out of pocket. They have received multiple letters from Blue Cross telling them I have met my out-of-pocket. At this point, I refuse to pay another cent. Some of the various stories I get from them are that Blue Cross reprocessed another claim and it left me in the hole. (Not true!!! Multiple representatives from Blue Cross have told them this on the phone.) I have had them also tell me that I haven’t met my out-of-pocket which I did at the beginning of the year.
Today I had someone tell me that they started my out-of-pocket over again in July! Absolutely not true! Today was my day off and I’ve spent 4 1/2 hours with various people on the phone to have nothing resolved. I had another manager, assure me they will take care of it. Again they escalated it and I can tell you nothing will happen. They have put multiple overrides on my account and they are supposed to be good for the entire year. They told me this as well last year however, they are only temporary even though they say they are permanent for the year or deny I have it on my account! Today they blamed Walgreens for overriding charges. (They absolutely don’t have the authority to do this!)
I had asked Walgreens at some point last year if someone could call and verify that I met my out-of-pocket. Walgreens says that they submit it to the insurance and they give them the amount so it’s all on the insurance! I am so done with them! Last week they told one of the Blue Cross representatives who was a rookie with this type of thing, that they farmed it out to a third-party agency which turned out to be another lie! Sorry for the long post, but they are an absolute nightmare!!! If you have any choice at all on who your prescription coverage is with you want to run as far away from these people as possible!

If I could give less than 1 star, I would. I was prescribed a pill to be taken for 90 days (longer usage could lead to major health problems). CVS Caremark approved the initial 30 pills and then, when it was time to refill the prescription, they denied the request. I contacted my Costco pharmacist, who said that CVS would only allow me to get a refill for 90 pills (when I only needed 60 more since I had already taken 30). I tried to call my main insurance first (Blue Cross), but they said it was a CVS problem and transferred me. The CVS person I spoke with told me that I needed to get 90 pills. After I explained (again) that CVS had approved the initial 30 pill order and asked if they could override the rule that required me to buy 90 more pills, he talked with his supervisor and then said I had 2 options: change my plan so that they don't require a 90 day refill or pay out of pocket.
Since the drug would cost about $600 out of pocket (versus $30 with insurance), I opted for the first choice. He talked again with his supervisor, and then said that option 1 was no longer an option and that it was mandatory that I pay for the extra 30 pills. Nothing I could say would make them alter this asinine policy. I don't care about having to pay an extra $10 for 30 pills that I don't need, but I do care about having to accept a policy that is idiotic, and I care about the inflexibility of a company that approved the first part of my prescription and then denied the balance. I cannot recommend this company to anyone and will be dropping both CVS Caremark and Blue Cross (since the BC plan we have requires us to use CVS).

CVS Caremark, operating as both a medical insurance provider and a pharmacy, presents a conflict of interest that severely undermines patient care. My experience with them has been profoundly negative, marked by bureaucratic hurdles and a blatant disregard for medical professionals' expertise. Despite having employer-provided coverage, I encountered egregious delays in medication authorization, even in the immediate aftermath of surgery. CVS Caremark repeatedly denied prescribed non-opioid medications, initiating a frustrating cycle of requests for alternatives, only to deny those as well.
This two-month ordeal exemplifies a system prioritizing corporate profit over patient well-being. While I recognize the necessity of profitability in business, CVS's model, where they control both insurance authorization and medication dispensing, creates a monopolistic scenario ripe for abuse. It is akin to paying for a service, only to have it arbitrarily denied based on internal financial considerations. This erodes trust in the healthcare system and demands scrutiny regarding the ethical implications of such vertically integrated structures. I urge a reevaluation of CVS Caremark's practices to ensure patient care remains paramount, rather than being subordinated to corporate profit margins.

My sister passed away on the 16 of Oct. I had heart failure on the 20. I ended up in the hospital. My doctor worked with me for days to get my heart rate down and to find the best combination to help my heart work well enough to discharge me, but when I got home these fiends goons refused to cover the medication that thins my blood for my heart to pump it well. I spend the whole day and night in pain. They told me to try baby aspirin when it specifically says baby aspirin is a completely different substance and can not be substituted for eliquis. These people are heartless and do not care about lives. They don't deserve to be dealing with human beings. I wouldn't trust them to take care of animals. They need to be closed down. We were forced to change pharmacies/prescription benefits. Never had a problem with our smaller pharmacy. I will say this, CAREMARK is not my doctor. They don’t know me on a personal level and to deny meds I have taken for a year or longer, or know my whole history, prescribed by my doctor, who does know me on a personal level and tell me they are now denying meds all in the “we’re making sure there’s not a better alternative med for you” movement, and have no IDEA about me personally.., This is a sick way of denying medication to those who have gone the right route for years.
Have seen specialist for a condition and been to the SAME doctor for years, who knows me as a person, not an ID NUMBER, have done all the right things taken all the pre tests, blood tests, etc only to be told “We don’t think you need this medication anymore” is a slap in the face. A waste of my time and money and travel. What medical school did they go to? They can’t even tell me what I look like! Caremark is not my doctor, it’s all about money and political up rising and less about MY CARE.
This company is useless, hasn’t helped me “save money”. A joke with medical power over me. If we could change we would, but the company (a big one at that) chooses this plan to save money over employees and their families' health is a travesty. I’ve never seen more incompetence, rudeness, than I have seen from my worst enemy. This is a terrible company and a rip off that we are stuck with. If you have a choice.., don’t pick them.

I have never in the 10+ years had any issues with Caremark until this year. The cancellation of meds mid year. The run around with “prior approvals” even when the doctor has sent in full documentation that even the Senior Specialists can’t find errors is disgusting. No one knows what’s going on and silos behind the scenes are playing games with people’s lives. And the silos lie because they tell you the prescriber pulls your prescription and the Sr Specialists at Caremark tell you the PA wasn’t complete when they find out it is in fact complete and accurate. I’m disgusted with Caremark and hope my employer decides to leave and go to a better provider.

I have had this insurance for years since I’ve worked at my job. They are just ridiculous. They keep changing the medications that are approved and how often I can refill. I’ve been on my acid reflux medication for a long time. First I could refill monthly as it is a necessity for me. Now they changed it to 90 day refills. But I can’t order a refill now because I’ve already gotten my 90 days worth ! I am so sick of them. The customer service is horrible. They are rude. I spoke with the customer service rep and first of all when she answered she sounded like she was asleep and annoyed that I was calling.
They also denied another medication I had been taking for over year because now they’ve changed the formulary of medications they want me to go with another one. Because to them it’s cheaper ! I seriously am so upset over all the denials and pre authorization stuff they request then end up denying the approval anyway! I can see why they are being sued! Do better CVS Caremark! I have been trying to get a prescription for Skyrizi refilled after taking this for 3+ years. First they denied it based on cost saying there are cheaper alternatives (Tremfya). Then they canceled the order for Tremfya, claiming it needs prior authorization. After prior authorization was issued, they canceled the order because they needed to verify the dosage with the doctor even though their system will not accept an order from the doctor without the dosage or directions. After my doctor contacted them for verification, they said on the phone that everything was OK with the order. Now they say they need prior authorization again. This has been going on for 3 months. CVS Caremark will do anything, not to fill this order. My advice is, if you have a choice, go elsewhere.

I've had to go back and forth with them, my doctor and the pharmacy to get a replacement. Their goal is to wear you down and starve you until you die. They're the Comcast of pharmacies. They are the AT&T of "health care". They also prohibit me from getting my Rx from my local specialist pharmacy because it's not in my plan - but I have no choice to buy that option. Heartless. If I could give less than 1 star I would. Caremark has to be the worst (if not just top 3) prescription benefits companies around. First you HAVE to use CVS pharmacies who are notoriously horrible. Then you get the prior authorization (FOR MEDICINE YOU'VE BEEN ON FOR YEARS) only to be denied - go through their appeals process for months and have to go without your medicine. My husband has had this happen with 2 critical medicines. Then I have to have labs done every 30 days for a condition and they won't fill a prescription that usually changes except for a 90 day prescription. They think they know better than the physicians treating you and that is apparent on some of the reasons for denials of medication and the treatment you get from their representatives. While Wegovy worsened my physical and mental health, my doctor provided a medical letter of necessity for Zepbound, yet my request was still denied, and even a suggested alternative, Mounjaro, was also refused.
