This is a ripoff site. I search for someone I wanted to hire. The free result shows that ALL information is available and I can get it. I register and surprise, NOTHING was available. NOTHING... They took my credit card info and my email. NOW I GET SPAM LIKE CRAZY and I see credit card transaction from Las Vegas, Nevada. I had to cancel all my credit card information and change my email. DO NOT TRUST THAT SITE.

The way the site was first set up it makes you feel like you're actually getting good information for free (for once) but of course, that would be too much to ask. Obviously I searched myself first and signed up for the $1 5-day trial and the information that came up is about 22 years old. At first I thought the site was just plain confused, but then I realized that the address listed for myself was the address where I lived when I was a NEWBORN. Really? I'm definitely calling them to cancel that tonight. I'm tempted to pay the additional $20 for the "Premium Report" but from what I've read, it's not going to be useful and it will be a waste of money. Whatever you do, don't give them your money, because they won't give you anything valuable in return that you can't find elsewhere more easily.
Hi Alex,
We hate to hear that you didn’t find the information you wanted in Instant Checkmate’s reports. Our developers are always working hard to integrate current data into our reports, but due to variables like clerical errors, slow processing times, and discrepancies between states laws over what is considered “public record,” some reports may be incomplete or outdated for people living in certain counties. A member care manager will reach out to you privately to resolve this issue.

AVOID ~~ AVOID~~ AVOID: When you decide NOT to pay their high prices, they offer you 5 days for $1 and collect your email address and credit card info. Then you get to see the report - no info other than name, address and land tel. YOU MUST CALL THEM to cancel monthly billing that will start in 5 days!!! Then for the person for whom they provided no info, they want you to pay $19.99 for premium info on that one person.
When you call them and want your tel removed - they won't do it. They even called me to explain why most reports have "no new info" - they would have to pay for marriage and divorce records and the other record they save THEY HAVE (but don't). They do not provide the info that you already have from OPEN databases like Registry of Deeds. They will let you fill out a form with ALL your info to "opt out" but no one in their right mind would give them MORE info.
Hi Pauline,

The site initially appears as a free site to locate information on people. Completely and deliberately misleading statements on this website that lead people to believe that they will receive up to date and accurate information as if doing a "background search". After I found a charge of 29.99 on my debit card, I called customer service and was told that after 5 days they automatically charged me 29.99 for the first month because I did not call back to cancel after 5 days.
I asked for a refund but the agent refused. He told me that all they could do was cancel the account and allow me to use the site for the remainder of the 1 month period, but they could not give me a refund. I used the site only on the day I used the trial... No service was used after the trial period expired! I wished I had read the review first. I do not recommend this site..... Total waste of money. You can get much more from searching free public records sites for public information.

As many people before me, paid $22 - monthly fee for unlimited access. Ran the report on myself. The only "shocking" thing was that the report was practically empty. The only information was my address and the phone. And, of course, if I wanted more, I could pay another $19.99 for "even more shocking information". I called them back and requested full refund. Of course, I was twice put on hold, while the operator talked to her manager. On my saying that this is a fraud, the response was, it's not, that I got the basic information, other information may be closed by a particular state and all this BS. I said that they have 2 options: 1) give me the full refund or 2) I'm calling my credit card which has a fraud protection program and they will deal with my bank, which will file the criminal complaint.
After a very brief behind the scene discussion with the manager, I was told that I will be refunded the full amount and it will appear on my credit account in 3-5 days. If by the end of the week I don't see it, I'll work with my bank on this. I don't think they need that "shocking experience". UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES GO FOR THE PARTIAL REFUND!!! I saw a few people here did. That's how the "shocking company" makes money. On the other hand, I'm glad my wife will not see the information about my previous 10 marriages... (:

I found this service trying to locate a friend in the midwest. The site initially appeared as a free site to locate information on people. It brings you through the entire search process with enhanced progress bars and warnings about how disturbing the findings may be. I was just looking for a phone number and address information. After several minutes of adding information it asks you to see the information. Then the fee options pop up. In big bold font it provides options for monthly to annual memberships. The smallest amount was "$9.86 / month". In very small print it says (you will be billed $59.16 today). I admit, I didn't see the fine print. After looking at the reviews for this rip off site, it seems I fell into the same trap as dozens of others. The report came up and I called immediately after seeing the charge total. The report itself was the same as you could google in 411.com.
I got nothing for the money because well, my friend isn't a salacious sex offender. When I called customer service to withdraw from the service they told me that I was being charged but said they could "this one time" refund 11 bucks. So I was 11 bucks in and they suckered in another customer. Right in line with their business model, I'm sure. Don't make the same mistake. This company provides almost nothing for the money. Use a credit report service instead. You'll actually get something for it and wont be sucked in to getting ripped off.

I ordered a 3 month unlimited subscription to Instant Checkmate and cancelled the same day because the information was absent unless I spent more money. I spoke with Chrissy or Christy who first advised that, "by law she could not cancel before the three months were up." I said I was willing to pay the $1 trial that I was not aware of until much later. She went to her supervisor and then advised the subscription would be cancelled after 1 month. I told her this was fraud and I would not pay for anything and would notify my credit company. She then went to a second supervisor and came back and told me the whole subscription would be cancelled. I checked with my credit card today and found that the total charged was credited to my account. Sometimes, it pays to be persistent.

Upon contacting them to cancel and asking for a refund for what I deemed to be false advertising I was told that all that was available to me was 50% refund! I jumped at the chance. Half the money back as opposed to none of it is something right!
I don't usually buy anything unless I have researched it online first! Why would this situation be any different? I just didn't think! Anyway after coming here and posting I was contacted by them at which time I was offered the rest of the money back. For that I am grateful. I am marking the matter resolved and have to say to everyone! Caveat emptor! Buyer beware. Always check the reviews online before making any purchase. You will save yourself $ as well as the aggravation of having to phone around and possibly losing money! I an uncertain if I should change my star rating as it appears as though only after taking action to shed light on poor business practices were they willing to take action. The customer is supposed to come first not "first after being exposed". The satisfied is due to receiving a full refund. Not for the quality of the product!

I signed up, did a search on myself. Located info from 1989 and then tried to see the rest at which time I was told that would be another $20. I was shocked my latest info wasn't in there for the original $20 and then to expect another 100% jump when the first stuff was so old. So when the rep asked "is there anything else I can do?" I said sure, REFUND my money! "Oh I will go and talk to a supervisor about that hold on..." When she came back she offered 50% - better than NO %. Took it and ran. Lesson learned yet again! Check the reviews before you make an online purchase!

I raised my review score because of the prompt reply to my complaint. After writing my original review Checkmate responded and we very quickly resolved the issue to my satisfaction. They obviously wanted to satisfy me in every way possible.
My review is based on excellent customer service which is hard to come by these days. Their eagerness to resolve my complaint is more important to me than the original concerns. I have learned after serving the consumer for 25 years that showing the customer you are simpathetic to their needs will get you through some difficult customer relations. The consumer just wants to know they are valued and appriciated.
I hope this helps others with their concerns and complaints.
Thank You One And All for taking the time to read my reviews.

Instant Checkmate offers no information that is Not Free on public data websites of your county, state or federal offices. The Premium service is a complete waste of money. For an extra 19.95 you can see if they are registered to vote and what party they vote for. They verify they have a SS #. Impostor information- the two listed were not impostors. Sex Offenders in your area- a local call to the police dept. will answer that for free.
Folks, if you must use this service, which I highly recommend you don't, stick with the Basic Membership information. Do not let them trick you into believing they have all the great extra info you can get nowhere else for 19.95. The rip off to this scam is they lead you to believe, by checking all these boxes while " running your report " to make you believe they have all this data. Then once you pay and see the report and few of the boxes checked info is there, so they want you to pay an extra 19.95 to see those other boxes when in reality there is very little more there and much is inaccurate or out of date.
Do you really want to pay 19.95 to see they applied for a SS card in 1970 or what year they applied for a voter registration card in 1970? Instant Checkmate is a total ripoff unless you just want to waste your money for the most basic of info which 95% or more you can get for free just by using a good search engine and some time. Criminal records? Go to the department of public safety website for your state and pay them 2.50 (in my state) and get everything in their data base on any person you like. Just Say No To Instant Checkmate!!!!

I did not even pay these people to complete registration. However, I was dumb enough to give my email address. When I figured out the service was terrible, I backed out without even completing registration. This company clearly told 3rd parties what my email address is because within two days I started receiving multiple, unsolicited emails from companies trying to sell me cell phones.
I have heard before about companies that buy up lists of email addresses in order to send you spam. Against my better judgement, I gave InstantCheckMate.com my email anyway, and this is the price I pay. I have used my email for over seven (7) years, and I have literally NEVER received an unsolicited spam email on it before. Now I have received four in the last 12 hours.
I have not signed up for anything else recently and have not given out my email to any site in ages. This is the only site that got my email in months. Clearly they are the ones to blame. Keep in mind, I never even finished registration, paid for anything, or completed a background check on anybody. InstantCheckMate.com is a scam, and I have no idea how it has any sort of approval. I am threatening to sue if they do not stop giving out my email address to 3rd companies.

I was trying to do a background check and this business offered the service at a very low price (the bait), but as I cont'd thru the online instructions on how to get info on them, this company Instant Checkmate kept asking for more and more money (the lure) or I would get no info for them without paying more. Every little bit of info they gave to me, afterwards they'd ask for more $$ if I wanted aliases, info about a police record, reports of questionable behavior, etc. I found out NOTHING beyond their names, birth date, possible relatives or addresses. For instance, to 'see' a report, they asked for a PDF fee, then to open and read the PDF and had to sign that I was over 18 and could handle any possible shocking or disturbing information that will show up. I'm talking $20 bucks and higher for each little topic of info, and it kept going on and on, pulling me in, charging me more and still telling me nothing. I finally 'woke up' as to this being a bunch of BS and a scam after being charged 4 'fees' when the very first 'bait' was how cheap their service was for all that I would learn.
I called my credit card co. as soon the charges showed up on my bill (i.e, I had to wait til after Xmas to report this to my credit card co.). The 4 charges, which totaled close to $75 and it would've been more if I hadn't finally realized I was getting ripped off. Then I did what I should have done in the beginning and that is look for reviews of this company before getting involved with them at all. I called to cancel the service, too, and had to leave a voicemail saying I wanted to cancel and they'd call me back.. I didn't wait til they called me back. I decided I'd better not waste another minute reporting this to my cc company and reporting them to an online reporting company about bad business practices. The BBB shows an A- rating on them, which to me means more people need to report them to the BBB. I plan to, after reporting them here.

I’m sorry you didn’t find the information you were looking for. While our data providers are always updating their information, some state and local governments do not release their records to the public, which creates gaps in our data. So I thought I was signing up for like $20 but when I looked at my bank account, they took out fifty something. The information I looked up was outdated and I mean by more than 3 or 4 years. I called to cancel and fortunately customer service was really great. They are reimbursing me the difference in the price because I told her I was pretty sure I did not click to pay fifty something dollars. Will wait to see if I get the money...hopefully I will.

Instant Checkmate has responded and refunded 3 months worth on my credit card. I appreciate the refund, but still think that this program is misleading. When it asks if you want 1 month or that 3 months is a better deal. I chose 1 month. That is all I wanted and expected to pay for. I consider this resolved.

I saw a pop-up ad on checking personal information. It stated it was only $10 so I decided to check it out. I signed up and just wanted to check out my own information to see how correct it was. I filled in their required information agreeing to the $10 charge. Instant Checkmate information was so old and mostly not correct. It had me listed as my maiden name. Which I hadn't used for 27 years. It offered for an additional $22.86 I could get more detailed information. Stupidly I signed up for that for 30 days. Company said the better deal was 3 months. I declined. It didn't say I had to call to cancel if I didn't want it anymore. I feel if I signed up for 30 days that it should have ended after 30 days. Website implied I could check up as many as I wished. What it didn't say was that it would cost me more money for Each person. As far as I am concerned, the whole deal was a rip off and I feel they were deceitful in their advertising. Didn't give me any return.

This company promises so much information for a basic set price but delivers what is already known by the consumer in order to start the process. They then offer more detailed reports for increasing monetary reward. Unless someone hires an attorney to peruse and analyze the fine print, the average consumer could be easily misled by this company's inflated claims of how much information is gained for one price. Furthermore the basic information contained numerous errors and when I called to complain and explained my reasons and pointed out their deceptive business practice, I was only promised half of my money and told this would take several days to receive. How this company operates may be technically legal but they have a long way to go to learn how to be ethically and morally right in their business practices and customer satisfaction.
I would never use them again or recommend them to anyone. They really should be ashamed of how they do business. It would appear that they have fooled some or all of the media with their claims or else this company found a way to reword or change how they appear to be reported on by the media to make it appear positive. This is one of the worst apparently legal scams I have encountered in quite some time and my hope is that someone in the media will soon report the truth about them or a way can be found to start a deceptive practice class action lawsuit to help inform the public.

After paying for the service, those locations didn't show up (I'm sure had I upgraded my account... Possibly 5 times or so). I would have finally the individual I was looking for. I think the company is very misleading in their terminology to " hook you". Then, once you have paid them, thinking you are going to receive the background information on a particular person; they ask you to "upgrade" for a complete report. It's a ripoff, don't waste your money!!!! Wish I had read the reviews first, I knew I should have. Listen to your gut. I'm going to cancel. It's been less than a week. I signed up for three months. I do not believe they are an above board, helpful organization, but rather a scam to induce you to sign up and then they deliver to you information that is easily accessed on the net. On Dec. 1 2013, I saw this website on the internet, www.instantcheckmate.com, that provides background information such as criminal felonies, death records, location data, etc. on any individual free of charge (so they initially claim). However, the website states that in order to get further detailed information a membership is needed where they charge a fee in the amount of $22.86, in which I authorized. This is where the company's shady tactics to make money become deceptive to the consumer. After paying the $22.86, I then started my search as intended, but apparently in order to get MORE further detailed information the company charges an additional $19.99 for full reports, in which I authorized that payment as well.
The next morning I go to check my bank account and this company, www.instantcheckmate.com, had the audacity to charge me $19.99 FOR EACH AND EVERY INDIVIDUAL PERSON I SEARCHED! I couldn't believe what I was looking at! What was the point of me paying the initial membership fee of $22.86 PLUS an additional amount of $19.99 for Full Reports on people if they charge each report PER PERSON?? I called the company trying to resolve this big mess and after being transferred (4 times to different people!) the last individual I spoke to was not customer friendly, sounded more like a robot reading out of the book of fine prints on repeat, but told me all that could be done was to take away 3 out of the 16 charges.
I've never in my life had an issue with ANY COMPANY, and I have dealt with numerous of corporations for years. I would have never proceeded with doing business with this company had I known that each person's report I clicked into would charge me continuously. That first $19.99 for full reports should have covered all that I was looking at. I am fully responsible for paying the $22.86 AND the one time charge of $19.99 to get the full reports, but I am absolutely appalled how this company charged me almost $400.
My case is currently under review to be disputed with my bank but please, do yourselves a favor and don't walk, but RUN as far from doing business with this company as possible. I find this company to be very shady and deceptive with the prices they charge for their services (which when looking up me and my husband's information I found the info provided aren't updated, accurate, or factual) and I'm just left overall disappointed and extremely frustrated. I only promote the best customer services I receive after doing any type of business and acknowledge the good in people when I write reviews, but this is the FIRST negative review I have ever written on ANY company in my life!
I feel it's my duty to reveal the truth to the public and warn people to take caution when dealing with these scam artists! I spoke to a supervisor who stated she would personally send me a cancellation letter, that I have yet to receive. On top of that, I can still log in to my account. Wanted to check on a family member and her husband to make sure they don't have a criminal record as things have been going downhill for them recently. This website pretends like it's gathering all this information... Loading this... loading that... looks somewhat impressive... like they might come up with something of use. Then you get to the page where they want you to give your credit card number... which I knew was coming because I knew that it wasn't free. It says... Enter your number and then click on submit order and the charge is $22.86... and you'll be getting those detailed reports we've been looking for. I thought... okay... I can do $22.86, it's not that bad. Then I click on it and it takes me to a page where it shows the person's name... their address... their birth date and their 'sign'... Wow... their sign. I'm guessing they added that in there because it will make it seem like a little bit more. So they charge you almost $23 for information you've likely already got.
Then below there is a section that said... "Oh... but if you want this information (the information you thought you already paid for)... you have to pay for a 'premium' account which is another $14.99." I thought about it and I was ticked off, but I thought... maybe I'll just go ahead and buy it... it's another $14.99... it's not that much. But what stopped me was their disclaimer... something to the effect that you agree that you're paying for information that might not be available.
Well guess what... that information won't be available... and they know that. How do I know this? Because I called to complain about paying for the 1st section and not getting the information that they led me to believe I was going to get. I didn't pay for the 2nd section for $14.99... but the woman told me that they can't get detailed information for just one person without a SSN. So had I paid for the 2nd section, it probably wouldn't have shown anything specific anyway. The woman I talked with pointed out the tabs on the left... which I had clicked on...They give details of all sorts of traffic violations, but for a bunch of people with similar names to what you're looking for. I said... I'm not looking through all that stuff, wasting my time when 'detailed reports' supposedly have been generated for the person I'm checking on.
So it's all a scam... They don't give you detailed information.... It's just public information their computer pulls up, but not by SSN, so it won't be very detailed. I guess I need to get in on a site like this... make a bunch of money off of people for providing nothing but a scam. Like others said... she offered half the money back and will automatically cancel the account at the end of the 30 days. So I ended up paying $11.43 for a month's worth of unlimited checks of people's names, addresses and astrological signs... OH BOY. It's so lame that it didn't even give the phone number.

I signed up on the checkmate.com website for a one time special to check a phone number (which by the way, this website offered zero information for what I was checking in to). When I signed up, the checkmate.com site was offering a special which stated that I could use it for a one time fee. It is VERY unclear that if you don't actually call within 5 days, that this automatically charges the credit card a recurring amount on a monthly basis. I noticed on my credit card statement that I have been getting charged a monthly fee of $22.86.
The customer service is worthless as far as giving a refund and well versed in telling the consumer that they are "bound to a contract... blah, blah, blah." The customer service even told me that they receive several of these calls each day. I told her that she may want to consider why so many people call in and complain. Perhaps it is that they are deceptive???? - Tricking the consumer can, many times, cause one to contact customer service and complain.
This website not only rates low in the fact that the information they offer is outdated but also the fact that its new member sign up policy is DECEPTIVE. I am not at all impressed with the customer service as it is obvious that the last thing they want to do is protect the consumer and reimburse when the consumer has been deceived.

Went into Checkmate and should have went with my gut on giving them $10 for public records of my mother's soon to be ex-husband. After you give them your cc and they charge you the initial fee, you realize that in order to get more information than what is supplied on Google for free, you need to pay $32 for arrest records & if you want them in a printable format you need to pay another $2. What a joke. Against my better judgement, I gave them even more $$ (yes, I am now calling myself an idiot). It pulled up that this person has no criminal record. My God! The small county paper provided me more on this loser. What a joke.
And to top it off, it suggests with your "subscription" you get endless information & requests. Yet another lie. You have to pay for every person you want to research or investigate. And the company continues to charge your account until you call them to cancel. It is about as bad as attempting to get out of a gym membership. Terrible. Learn from my mistakes. Take the time to go down to the courthouse or police station and have them pull the records for you for the printing fee.

I was in need of information on somebody, particularly their police record. I searched on Google and found 10 incidents that were very helpful in my assessment of this person. Then I went to InstantCheckMate.com in order to get as much information as possible. After going through the process of "finding" phone numbers, family members, residences, and police records, I was prompted to buy a subscription in order to access the information. It was important to me to be vigilant and from the looks of the progress bar while "searching,” I would have all the police records I could want. So, it finished downloading the PDF and I scroll through it. This is the content that I got: One inaccurate address and a list of 8 sexual offenders in the area around that address with their mug shots. No criminal history on my guy - which is obviously publicly accessible since I found so much on Google.
So I paid $22.86 for 15 pages that were practically blank. As far as I am concerned, they are a fraud company. Do not use their service! Instead, use Google and local online newspapers.

The company offers you a free trial and then automatically charges your credit card a monthly fee if you don't call to cancel the free trial within five days, so don't get the free trial unless you mark it on your calendar to cancel immediately after your search. The data Instant Checkmate allegedly pulls up is worthless. I did a test search of a couple of people I already knew about to see if it was any good. The addresses it pulled up were either the wrong person or years out of date, and it didn't find criminal convictions for two people I know for a fact served prison time. So basically it's a waste of money. If you have the time, you'd be better off just walking over to your local county courthouse and searching records there for free.

Was looking for some general information on a doctor. Wanted to confirm something that I knew was true from over two years ago, two years. So I thought I would try it out. The information wasn't there. Okay. Fine. So I started looking up other people I knew just to confirm valid things to see if the site was legit. When I knew that my divorce record wasn't there and it is a Public Online Record, I about lost it. It has been over two years and if they have any sort of data system, they would have it. I called to ask questions, and I got a women who answered with children playing in the background. She gave me the runaround about the inability to access all types of "data..."
I was like this is a crock. I said, if anyone in the US can look up my divorce free, how come I can't find it by paying you? She seemed perturbed and was getting annoyed as a child screamed, and put me on hold. She came back a few minutes later and told me that she canceled my membership, would give me back half of my money, but I still had the right to use it for the rest of the month. Because I was not "happy" with the outcome, she would do me a favor of returning half my money. Seriously? Everyone I checked out came out blank, besides a name and address. I wasn't paying a premium price to pull up more ** if they couldn't even pull up the basics that I knew were true. And I am a pretty good researcher online myself. Just like most reviews here, I had signed up for one month. They were definitely misleading because the information I received in the background searches were general or incomplete, and were asking for more money for a comprehensive report which should have been provided in the first place. I was disappointed but figured that I would let it go and never do business with them again.
Until a month later I see a charge for 20 something dollars...I call thinking the rep would gladly refund the money, only to have her say that I didn't read the fine print. I agreed to it and she couldn't refund my money. At this point I knew I had to participate in the game. I asked for manger or supervisor and that's when the rep offered me 50 percent. I said no and waited a while until a supervisor was on. I played cordial and friendly, and gave her a good argument with the conclusion I need a refund.
I explained to her that with other companies that have fine print they do refund, so the supervisor then turns it around saying she doesn't need to give me a refund but she will as a courtesy, and next time read the writing...She said they don't hold customers for a little amount of 20 something dollars...I could imagine the scum that works at this company, definitely lesson learned and if you want a refund you need to play the game and be persistent!

I just made a mistake registering to this site. It was link over white pages and I thought it was serious. After registering for 3 times, not accepting my Visa card, I was skeptic, because every time it says they cannot process the report. Now I am afraid because I gave them 3 times a Visa no. and details of 3 Visa cards (I realize it was a big failure because the site always offer another condition every time without sending me the report I need). Please help me! Should I have to close all these Visa cards against misuse! After being skeptic, I research and found too many bad reports against InstantCheckmate.com. Please tell me what to do, to avoid this misuse of my cards! Thank you in advance.

Signed up for $1.00 trial offer in hopes of tracking down a man owing over $100,000.00 in child support. They advertised that "The Full Report May Contain: Criminal Records, Speeding Tickets, Mugshots, Sex Offenses, Marriage Records, Divorce Records, Address History, Phone Numbers, Known Relatives."
The report only gave me the basic information I already had given them for search, basically his name, age and city/state. They wanted to bill me an additional $10 for the detailed report, which I was mislead into believing I had already paid for. They also wanted to charge an additional $1.99 per report to make it downloadable/printable. I cancelled 5 minutes after realizing I'd been ripped off.
Billing Details - *Your five day $1.00 trial lasts until 8/2/2013. If you would like to cancel before the trial ends, you may do so for any reason and you will not be charged again. Simply call 1-866-490-5980 between 5am - 10pm Pacific Standard Time (7 days a week), PST to speak with one of our Customer Service Representatives. Otherwise, your trial membership will end on 8/2/2013, at which time you will be charged the standard monthly rate of $29.63. Your membership will automatically renew every 30 days thereafter until you cancel. By clicking "Start My Trial," you are providing your electronic signature authorizing Instant Checkmate to charge your card as described, until you cancel.

I signed up for a membership and was charged $22.86. After I tried to search for three different people, I kept getting the message, "No results can be found." Even people I know for a fact have been married and divorced, Instant Checkmate did not show any records for marriage as well as criminal, etc. I called within 5 min. of signing up and the customer service lady said she would cancel my membership, issue me a refund and as a courtesy I can still access the site until the end of the month. She told me to look for my refund within 3-5 business days. I called back in 7 days which is today 7-25-13 because I did not have a refund and the next customer service lady advised that no refund has been issued and my membership was only cancelled. She said she would listen to the recorded call of me and the first customer service rep conversation. She got back on the phone and said that there was no mention of a refund. So I asked if I can listen to the recorded call and she said no. I know for a fact the first Customer service rep advised she would give me a refund. She even went over my card info. So now here I am stuck with no background information that I was originally in search of as well as a charge on my credit card for absolutely NOTHING!!!!!! Do not use them.

I was pleasantly surprised that Checkmate's Customer Service Dept. not only got back to me, but they gave me a full refund. They explained how everything was listed in the fine print of the agreement, where you had to call to cancel your one month subscription or it would continue. But since so many people had this problem, they gave me a refund and hopefully will make it more clear for future purchasers. I only gave them four stars because it took so long for a resolution.

Same story as everybody else. Signed up for a ONE-TIME use with NO renewal. Of course they keep billing my card every month and refuse to cancel the service I never signed up for. After calling my credit card company, they told me to cancel my card and they will give me one with a new number. They also said to dispute the charges and they will cancel them. This is apparently the only way to stop this illegal billing by InstantCheckMate.com.

I signed up for a background check in June 2012 (a single month). I have attempted to close the account on at least 3 occasions (July 2012, Dec 12 or Jan 13 and finally this week). I was forced to resort to having my credit card block the charges. This week alone I placed 2 phone calls to cancel and dispute the charges. They were never able to locate my account - without locating the account I could not cancel it. They could also not locate records of my phone calls - which I stated I could provide proof from my cell phone company (they decline to use my records).
They offered to credit 60-days initially. When I asked to speak to the supervisor, she upped it 90-days. Anything beyond this they claimed they would be unable to credit. I asked for another level higher to authorize the credit. I have now asked for documentation of the discussion as InstantCheckMate.com is unable to provide any proof of conversations (I am still awaiting the email). It appears I now have an elaborate process to go through. They were unaware that this latest call went off mute and I could hear them talking about finding the latest call. When asked directly the supervisor denied that the phone call was located. At this point, I have been able to stop additional charges, but I have been unable to see a credit for $240 for the past year's charges.

Their opt-out form is a deliberate and transparent scam designed to get more information on you rather than give you an opt-out option. The form is absurd. I went in to remove my information, but their online form asked for more detailed data that is above what is already on the website. A true opt-out would NEVER ask for this information. Clearly the goal is to get additional data that they do not already have. AND NOTE: Other sites use InstantCheckMate information on you (e.g. Pipl). Once you are on this site, there is no way out.

A few days later, I noticed a charge on my account for $29.63. I called the company and they said I didn't "check the box" and therefore had subscribed. They refused to refund my money. After reading complaints about this company, I wasn't confident that they would stop the charges even though they sent an email stating I had unsubscribed. I was advised by my bank to cancel my card to stop them from charging me in the future. The Website says they have "excellent customer service". I did not experience that.

I tried their $1 Trial Membership, then got suckered in for another $1.99 to get "PDF reports". All reviewers are correct - information is garbage. You can get the same "Google" or "Spokeo" info for free. When I signed up for my trial, I found that the website was very clear about the 5 days trial. It also indicated the number to call to cancel, by which date, and calling hours. So there's no confusion for me as to how and by when to cancel.
I started the membership today. Then it dawned on me to look up reviews about this company... not good. I decided not to wait until the end of my 5-day trial and called in to cancel... busy signal. Mmm, I called again - busy. Again - busy. What???!! Then I kept calling for another 20 minutes and still busy! I was sweating bullets that it was a scam. I then looked through their website and found a support email. I sent an email clearly indicating that "I want to cancel effective immediately" and "do not charge anything to my credit card". Within 15 minutes, I received a very clear and explicit email confirming my cancellation and that "you will not incur any additional charges".
So my experience indicates that perhaps this company is not totally scam. You just have to read the prints (which are not that fine as I found them pretty explicit), and you just have to follow the rules. In addition, I think the company is just run poorly (busy phone lines-?) and the information provided is not that robust!

I read several negative reviews on this site about the Instant Checkmate Search service. Having tried the service for a 5-day trial for the cost of $1.00, I can say it's not a bad deal. On the plus side, this service provided full birth date, cross references related persons, and location history. In addition, you can do unlimited searches throughout your trial period. As for the accuracy of the information, you should be skeptical of any information especially the criminal background reports. It's a good idea to use an additional service to compare results and do your own research to piece together information.
You must cancel the trial or you will be charged for a monthly renewal. The instructions were provided to call the customer service for this. I talked to a real person who processed the cancellation without any problem. You can cancel a trial before the end of the trial period and continue to use the service until the expiration, which I recommend if you do not plan to continue the subscription. By canceling a few days prior to expiration, you can avoid getting stuck at the last minute and miss the cancellation deadline.

The organization then offered us an "even more shocking" detailed report for an additional fee, which we wisely declined. It looked like a stepladder-type bilking tactic. Then, the very next morning, we received a call from our credit card company informing us that their Fraud department had detected illegal activity on our card. To my surprise, the promotion was stated to be valid for five days, so I ran a number of inquiries. But the info was rather shallow and inaccurate in places. Every real estate company and homeowner does criminal background checks. This bad information may show up even when I try to get an apartment through a real estate. My wife and I have been turned down on a lot of apartments. Maybe this is why, because our income is over $61,000 a year. I am afraid to launch my dance music album, because of this. Can I sue for defamation of character?

I find it interesting that a couple seat belt tickets, couple of no insurance tickets, and a couple of no registration tickets would be worthy of a warning like this. I'm shocked this site is this stupid. Shut them down.

It took about 15 minutes to load reports. They charge you $22 for a report of 3 lines: the person’s name, address, and DOB. They mislead you to think that a full report will be given after you paid the $22, but that’s not true. When I called to complain, they told me I had to call back tomorrow because their lines were down. I don't believe this to be true; however, I will be calling back tomorrow. Something should be done about this site. Do not waste your time or money using this site.

InstantCheckmate.com (aka Checkmate.com) is a total waste of time! Don't even bother to go to their websites unless you have a lot of time to spare. These websites promote a public records search but waste your time for at least 15 minutes showing you all kinds of "downloading" screens before it finally lets you know that you have to pay a minimum of $22.86 to get a single report! This is really, really bad because they don't tell you about the costs "up front" and you are locked into their website for 15 or 20 minutes before you find this out! We need to complain strongly about this kind of behavior and deception from a website or business! I give "InstantCheckmate.com" and Checkmate.com zero stars with a very strong recommendation that you do not use or purchase anything from this company or website so that we can send a message to all companies that this sort of 'selling" behavior is not acceptable!

This site is a scam. If you want to pay $26+ for some old address that you can just get off the internet for free, then go right ahead. I searched for some people that I know 100% have records, but they had no record of it; the birth dates on everybody I looked up was incorrect (including myself). But this is the funny part - I was able to find someone’s mug shot and arrest record on the internet for free online, but instantcheckmate didn't have it. I called them up to complain. They said their systems were down and to call another time. People always say that when you try and get your money back ha ha ha. They can keep the money that’s why I’m here reporting them. Don’t waste your money!

The "search" gave me 5 addresses about the individual on one page without anything on their criminal background and then proceeded to dump 146 pages of addresses on others who had similar first and last names but different middle names (my person does not have any AKAs as shown on the first page), on which I had not even requested information, and all the known sex offenders around these bogus people and addresses. I called immediately to cancel all these worthless services to find that, of course, I would still be billed for the theft of my money anyway. Based on this website alone, it appears that fraud has been committed and these people need to be shut down by the FCC.

Two problems: 1) I entered for a free search, only to find that only my search was free, and getting the info at the end would be charged for. At best, that's misleading; 2) There were long waiting periods where it said it was making a "secure connection," where I suspect it was either downloading malware or searching my computer for passwords. Coincidentally, I checked my bank account log on screen and my username and password were both missing from that screen. I have a security program running and have downloaded hundreds of files, but this was the first time I found my bank username and password missing. I am highly suspicious that this is what happened here and am contacting my bank.

I contacted them and they actually told me they couldn't look up my account without me providing, get this, my credit card number and security code along with my Social Security Number. She told me they couldn't simply look up my account by my name or address. What a load of crap. These clowns should be run out of the country! It's truly a shame that scam companies like this one give other legit internet folks a bad name. InstantCheckMate.com, why don't you crawl back under the rock you came out from or just do us all a favor and stop breathing our oxygen?

Thank you for refunding my money. I'm still a little dissatisfied with the fact it took 9 months to resolve the issue. I think you should be more upfront with the 7 days free trial and the fact that extra information cost more money. Once again Thank You for the refund but I won't ever use your site again.

I purchased a subscription to Instant Checkmate for 6 months with the illusion that if I was unsatisfied, I could cancel at any time and only pay the few dollars for the free trial. When I called to cancel the next day, I was told that because of the searches I made, I would be charged $23 and change. I asked about the ability to cancel after the 7 day free trial, and I was told that the 6 month subscription did not apply to the free trial. If I knew that the information that I got from them was the same thing I could get from the internet for free, I definitely would not have bought a subscription. The extra information that they have on the people you search cost you extra money every time you check to see if that person is the one that you are looking for. I am angry that I was lied to.

This company is definitely a scam. You only get a portion of what you pay for initially. If you want anything comprehensive that they promised in the beginning for the $23, you have to pay an extra $10 plus $1.99 for the privilege of getting PDF copies of the reports. They fail to be upfront with what they have promised to deliver and what it will really cost you. When I called Instant Checkmate, a representative told me that I could get all the items such as criminal background checks, licenses, old phone numbers and addresses with just the $23. But in reality, you only get a portion. It appears as though they withhold the parts that you are most likely to need and that is where the $10 has to be paid per each inquiry. She said she was having system problems and put me on hold for 3-4 minutes while going to open my account. She returned to say that since they were having system problems and could not get into my account, she could refund the $23.
When I asked about the extra $10 for the one individual report, she said that had been my option to choose that and therefore could not be returned. I did not bother to ask about the $1.99 for PDF reports. Just think what they might make in a day by paying back the initial $23, but keeping say $10-$30 off 500 applicants who like me were gullible enough to get caught in the trap.

I did a background check of myself. My birth date was wrong. No marriages were noted, although I have been married twice. Very little information available, period. I called and complained. The customer service rep saw I only did one check on myself. When I told him I needed either a refund or would dispute the charge with my credit card company, he said he would issue me the month's credit. I have the confirmation number, so we will see. Be persistent. Get your money back, or even better, do not use this site.

I believe this website is for the most part a scam. I first wanted to check my own record to see if this site has their records straight and it's believable. Unfortunately, after agreeing to pay $9.95 monthly for 6 months - which promised an unlimited number of searches per month, I found out that for this money, I was getting only name, date of birth and a phone number and that's only to view! I paid additional $1.99 to have the information on PDF and to be able to print it. And on top of this, only my name was correct! My birthday and phone number were wrong. And for additional information, I would have to pay additional $10! What a scam and chaos - misinformation creating website this is! Beware! Beware this is a scam and computer generated information about real people. My real phone number in their records was a combination of 2 different phone numbers I had in the past.

This company is totally misrepresented. The information they have is no more than what you can get online researching public records. When you want to discontinue your unused membership time, they tell you they will cancel your membership. You do not get reimbursed any of your unused membership time. You are told that you already called and they told you they would cancel your membership, but they do not let you cancel your membership for a refund of the rest of the time. Don't waste your time or money on this company. They have no updated information. You can find out as much as they have and give you a runaround on the phone.

This was a total waste of money. When I ran a trial background check on someone and it said it had full records of the person I was checking, I paid the one-month membership fee. The results they said they found were a joke. I only found half of the addresses for the person, no criminal history which I know there was and no records for marriages or divorces. What a scam. Then I had to call them to cancel the membership. If I didn't, they would continue to bill me a monthly fee. Anyone looking for a background checking system needs to keep looking. InstantCheckmate promises you information in 7 different categories (personal, location, criminal history, marriage/divorce history, related person, etc.). For every one I searched, there was no marriage/divorce history even though most of the people I searched are married and have been married for years. I found this site linked to an attorney's site. So I figured it was on the up and up. I purchased the one month unlimited trial and ran my own report. When the info came back, it was incorrect. I immediately contacted them and spoke to Dan telling him I ran my report and it was incorrect and I wanted to cancel immediately and be refunded since I wasn't even on their site 10 minutes. He said that I wasn't in their database and to call back in 45 minutes to an hour. Then I found the feedback on this Consumer Affairs website and was astonished.
I immediately called my bank and told them to put in a dispute of the charges as it was a scam. I read to her a posting where one person said she was advised by her bank to cancel her card immediately to prevent further charges. My banker agreed, so I cancelled my card and had her continue the filing of the dispute. I called back and they said there was no Dan and they could refund 50% to which I told them that was not sufficient and that I was calling my bank tomorrow.
It's a shame that there are people out there scamming honest, trusting people, turning to them for a real reason rather than just to be nosy. I thank my bank for quickly moving on this matter as InstantCheckMate.com had charged my account immediately. Hopefully, more people will see this site before they make the purchase and have to go through everything to get their money back.
