I created a paid account to search for the criminal background of my crazy ex. InstantCheckmate.com could not find anything pertaining to arrests or convictions, despite the local newspaper having documented them from 2009-2012. I called and demanded a refund of my $30. They only authorized a $13 refund because I had performed 2 searches (because due to the first search providing only scant information, I did another search to verify if there was another record). This site is a SCAM - plain and simple.

I signed up to check on a person that is stalking my daughter. I happen to know he has a police record, has been married, and is divorced. The only information Instant CheckMate had on him were his last two addresses. So then I checked myself and several family members. Same story - just addresses, horoscopes, and what sex offenders live nearby. You can find that information out without paying Instant CheckMate. So I called them to complain, and the very sweet girl immediately cancelled my account, but since I used it, she would only refund half, for a total of $14.43. I think they rely on making $14.43 off of everyone, knowing there is a ton of complaints. I plan to appeal the remaining $14.43 charged to my credit card. Everyone else needs to do this too. I know for a fact that disputing a charge to your credit card does work. Fight!

This site at first appears to be free, but after several steps, hits you with a charge after it looks like they found a lot of information. Once you pay, the information is skimpy and it missed several critical issues on the people I was checking. The quality of the data for what you pay is poor.

This is a total scam. You pay 20+ dollars and get essentially no information. If you want the premium information, which is anything more than a phone number and address, it costs you $10 more. I did not go past this point but I would bet that there are other charges before you get anything of substance. This is plain and simple false advertising.
Reviewed June 12, 2013
The site shows downloading of all the listed information (criminal history, etc.). But after paying, you get a report with only name, age and an address. If you want more information, you have to upgrade to a premium subscription. I'm an idiot. I should have checked this page first.

I signed up for the 5-day trial and made the mistake of not cancelling till the 6th day... They did say that they could refund me half of the $29.53, and said that their system wouldn't let them refund any more, which I know is bull. I admit that I should have been more on top of it and I should have cancelled on the 5th day... but they could have still refunded me the full amount if they wanted to. The problem with them is the information that you get when you do a background search on someone is just from public records that you could easily get on your own without them. To get (supposedly) more information, you have to sign up for a Premium Report and pay $10 more, but the customer service girl on the phone even told me that you really don't get much more info with the Premium Report. So it's basically just a ripoff where they get you to sign up for a trial membership then hope you forget to cancel in time; then they just made $30 off you... And there's really nothing you can do, which is totally frustrating! So DO NOT even sign up for a trial membership with Instant Checkmate. You can google search someone and find out just as much information! Live & Learn...

I signed up to do some background checks. The information provided wasn't any more than what I could get free from the internet. There are no records for marriage/divorce on anyone. Criminal records are incomplete. Family members are wrong. I decided to check some people I knew, such as myself and family members, to see if this site provided what they promised. My birthday was wrong, my brother's birthday was wrong, my brother's grown "twin" daughters were supposedly born 3 months apart. This business, and I use that term lightly, should be put out of business. It is a complete rip-off. Everyone subscribed should get a refund. They should be chased out of the motel, apartment, house, PO box, etc. where they are operating from and be made accountable.

I opened an account on May 14th in order to have a source available to run checks on prospective applicants for a rental property I own. I ran my own background check the night I "signed up". Knowing my own history and what should be publicly available from any respectable background check, virtually nothing appeared. Some of the information that appeared was accurate, but VERY outdated, like 10 years old. Much of that info was flawed. I sent an e-mail to InstantCheckMate.com the night I signed up to express my disappointment.
On May 31st, I called the number off my credit card billing to cancel, having only used their service that first and only time. I told the girl I wanted to cancel and I was ensured of no repeat billing for their service due to the inadequate results I obtained. Of the nearly $60 I spent that night to see old, outdated, partly-inaccurate info on myself alone, I could only get $22 credit. The customer service rep was helpful. But when I asked for a larger refund, she commented roughly that her supervisor approved $22 and that's better than nothing. Very disappointing. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU USE A DIFFERENT COMPANY. But who knows, maybe they're all this bad.

I signed up for 24 hours of unlimited background checks on the internet for $1.99. A month later, they billed my debit card an additional $ 29.63. When I called to complain, they argued with me and said that I had registered for monthly service (I had not). They could, however, cancel my account and refund half of the charges. I also had a bank overdraft fee in the amount of $35, which they were unwilling to deal with. I told them their offer to settle was unacceptable and that I wanted it to be made whole. They did not respond. I have contacted the Nevada Attorney General to initiate an investigation and complaint. Up came a handy little box that offered more information for a price. I decided to go ahead and pay as they offered a 30-day plan. Firstly, their service is for absolute crap as far as searching records. I am not quite sure what records they are searching but they never came up with a doggone thing I didn't already know about, with the information being ages old. I even looked up myself and a couple of other people and again, jack squat. Apparently, I've never been born, married or divorced and the list goes on. Secondly, the 30-day option is open-ended. InstantCheckmate.com (aka Checkmate.com) is a total waste of time! Don't even bother to go to their websites unless you have a lot of time to spare. These websites promote a public records search but waste your time for at least 15 minutes showing you all kinds of "downloading" screens before it finally lets you know that you have to pay a minimum of $22.86 to get a single report! This is really, really bad because they don't tell you about the costs "up front" and you are locked into their website for 15 or 20 minutes before you find this out! We need to complain strongly about this kind of behavior and deception from a website or business! I purchased a subscription to Instant Checkmate for 6 months with the illusion that if I was unsatisfied, I could cancel at any time and only pay the few dollars for the free trial. When I called to cancel the next day, I was told that because of the searches I made, I would be charged $23 and change. I asked about the ability to cancel after the 7 day free trial, and I was told that the 6 month subscription did not apply to the free trial. If I knew that the information that I got from them was the same thing I could get from the internet for free, I definitely would not have bought a subscription. The extra information that they have on the people you search cost you extra money every time you check to see if that person is the one that you are looking for. I am angry that I was lied to.

This company is definitely a scam. You only get a portion of what you pay for initially. If you want anything comprehensive that they promised in the beginning for the $23, you have to pay an extra $10 plus $1.99 for the privilege of getting PDF copies of the reports. They fail to be upfront with what they have promised to deliver and what it will really cost you. When I called Instant Checkmate, a representative told me that I could get all the items such as criminal background checks, licenses, old phone numbers and addresses with just the $23. But in reality, you only get a portion. It appears as though they withhold the parts that you are most likely to need and that is where the $10 has to be paid per each inquiry. She said she was having system problems and put me on hold for 3-4 minutes while going to open my account. She returned to say that since they were having system problems and could not get into my account, she could refund the $23.
When I asked about the extra $10 for the one individual report, she said that had been my option to choose that and therefore could not be returned. I did not bother to ask about the $1.99 for PDF reports. Just think what they might make in a day by paying back the initial $23, but keeping say $10-$30 off 500 applicants who like me were gullible enough to get caught in the trap.

I purchased an unlimited one month membership from Instant Checkmate for just under $23. After less than ten minutes of use, I realized the services they purport to provide are bogus. Using very narrow search techniques produced long, inaccurate lists from the entire nation that clearly fell outside of my search parameters. As a test, I conducted searches using information I knew to be entirely accurate including known criminal records and got search results of zero. Within ten minutes of my purchase, I called Instant Checkmate to cancel my account. I spoke with Scott at Station #22. When I told him that I'd just purchased a membership minutes ago, was unhappy with the service they offered and asked for a refund, he guffawed (not much of a surprise to me after experiencing the poor quality of their site. I was surprised, however, that they picked up the phone!
After some hemming and hawing, he finished researching my account and noted that because I'd actually searched on quite a few names in that ten minute time period, he could only offer me a 50% refund. I asked him how many searches warranted too many for them to offer me a full rebate. Silence. Then he went on to say that wasn't really the point. He explained that it costs them money to operate their business and that I clearly accessed a lot of information that they couldn't just provide me for free. He went on to say that because they were only giving me a partial refund, I would be allowed access to the site for the full 30 days of my membership. I asked if the account would close after 30 days or if I'd have to call back to cancel. He assured me that the account would close.
I didn't wait around to see about that. I contacted my credit union (the issuer of my credit card). They advised me to replace my card so that InstantCheckMate couldn't process any more charges. They also suggested I file a Notice of Fraudulent Activity (one of their forms) to have them review the disputed transaction. I did both. The credit union conducted the investigation and refunded the remaining 50% of my payment to InstantCheckMate. I had a big scare and some hassles obtaining a refund, but thankfully I did get my money back.

I signed up, put in information, and the outcome gave me inaccurate information. The birth date was wrong and it was not detailed enough under the criminal record section. It brought up random people with the same name (most with different middle initial). I called and asked for a full refund, and they said it will take 3-5 business days (which is pretty standard for refunds). I think for the money that is paid for this service, it needs to be a little more accurate with the information they show of the people you investigate. For example, I do not need to know the sex offenders that live near them. I need to know if they are the sex offender.

I have been trying to cancel my $1 5-day trial for a couple days now. Tomorrow, I'm to be charged $29.63 for membership. The phone number listed (1-866-490-5980) goes to fast busy almost immediately. They seem to go through great lengths to make it impossible to reach them to cancel. I did find an email address that even that they seem to try to hide. They intentionally left the @ sign off, which makes it easy to miss. But that works as well as the number they ask you to ring as there is no reply. I've called my bank thinking I could just have it blocked when it hit, but they said there is nothing they can do.
I really don't understand how there is nothing they can do, but I've almost gotten used to the way banks could really care less about people. Shame. I guess I'll be going into the branch to open a brand new account and then dealing with changing direct deposit at work and any real recurring bills I have. Bottom line is stay away from these folks. They are nothing but crooks and the product stinks too. As others have said, the info is very bad. Lo and behold, I see the monthly charge being processed by my bank. I called Instant CheckMate and asked why I was being charged. Preemptive Strike: a surprise action that is launched in order to prevent a company known for questionable business tactics from doing it to you. In this case, it was "me," the individual consumer, conducting a preemptive strike against InstantCheckMate.com, a company known for its questionable business practices. Here's the sequence of events:
I searched for an online provider of sensitive personal information about "me." My first exploration led me to InstantCheckMate.com. I searched for "me" and found "me." For about $22, I could be supplied with a detailed report. I elected to pass by closing the page. A popup offered me unlimited access for the next five days for one dollar. I accepted that offer and supplied the appropriate credit card information. Upon payment of which, I was granted access to detailed reports.
I discovered much of the information supplied was inaccurate or missing. I decided to cancel. But it was after-hours, and I would need to wait until the next day. I returned to their website to find a link to specifically cancel the service. I could find none. I did a web search using "instant check mate cancel" as keywords. That's how I found this site and these reviews. I was very alarmed at what I found. I was frantic to make sure they could not do to me what they had done to so many others. I contacted my credit card company via online chat. The representative advised me to cancel my current card and be reissued a new card which would prevent additional unauthorized charges, i.e. a "preemptive strike."
It took all of about five minutes to complete the cancellation and reissue of a new card. There would be no way InstantCheckMate.com would ever be able to do to me what it has done to so many others. It was as simple as that! P.S. never, ever use a debit card or check for any online transaction. Always, always use a credit card or intermediary such as PayPal through which there is recourse to obtain refunds bypassing a potentially-fraudulent company.

I thought I purchased a one month membership on December 28, 2012. Right after I went on to the website and did 3 searches, all 3 were either missing information (lots of information) or completely wrong. For whatever reason, I didn't call to cancel the night I purchased and I actually completely forgot about it until now - when I viewed my credit card statement. When I googled them to get their phone number, it pulled up all these horrible reviews about this company and go figure; they are the same exact complaints I have. Thank goodness I read somewhere that said something about them just signing people up for memberships without consent or I wouldn't have even thought to ask about that.
Since when does a one month membership turn into a recurring membership, which they did say I was signed up for but they did supposedly cancel? More importantly, how can a company that is offering these types of services not be held liable for producing accurate information? This could really endanger someone's life. This is truly a scam and I'm disgusted they continue to get away with this. They must be stopped!

My personal data is incomplete and some items that should have data have none at all such as marriages and divorces. I have no use for data pertaining to sex offenders living at any of my former addresses nor would another person using this service to perform a background check on me.

The information this agency charges for their reports is obtained from (according to their telephone rep) the County Clerk's office for the name and state provided. I did a test on the information I received back from Check Mate and found nothing in the report categories to be true. The problem, I learned from the Check Mate operator, is that once the information comes in with people of the same last name in an area, it is often misentered into the Check Mate data entry system (human system error for Check Mate fault) for people of like last names in the same cities or towns which results in totally incorrect information.
I almost decided to abort my idea of doing this test but was drawn back into the website with an offer of continuing the search for $1.00 for 5 days. After seeing the incorrect information on the reports and calling, I was told I couldn't get my $1.00 refunded. After explaining that if my account was not closed and my $1.00 was not refunded, I would feel it necessary to report them, I was told to call back in 45 minutes in a very nasty tone to get the account closed and my refund. The woman I spoke with, while revealing what I wanted to find out about this company, did so with a very poor attitude. This service does not provide reliable information at all. What concerns me about this business model is that there are so many more companies offering a similar type computer-based service with 'Knowledge' being offered and sold as the product, which is in and of itself a reputable working model. Where I have a problem is twofold. First is the arbitrary and capricious pricing structure that the average Joe (who is using this service from 10 times per year to maybe 10 times per month and who is being gouged for $25 per month plus any hidden fees that are built into the model for the express purpose of padding their profits) is paying. And I, too, think profits are a fabulous wealth-building device. I just believe being upfront and placing it all on the table for the customer to decide is the best policy. Eventually, consistently low trending reviews are going to kill this business, sending them to competitors!

They were either severely incomplete, or were not even listed in Instant Checkmate's system at all. After about 5 days of having registered, I called Customer Service to cancel. I was highly dissatisfied and would not be using the site again because I could not rely on it. I was offered half of my money back because I had used the service. I stated that if I had not used the service, I wouldn't know that I needed to ask for my money back.
Even after speaking to a supervisor, they would not budge, and refused to give me a full refund. I was highly dissatisfied, but I settled for half of my money back. This company is indeed a scam at this time. I can see how it may develop enough in a few years so its database may be more complete and reliable, but for now, it is a baby company that is about 5% developed, resulting in an absolute rip-off and scam. InstantCheckMate promotes one-time $1 criminal check offer. They then use credit info to create a $25 monthly charge without one's authorization. They say it is your responsibility to cancel a service, which you never signed up for. If you demand your money back, they will probably give it back. They have promised mine back (6 months’ worth) in 3-5 business days. I think that this is to limit the number and quantity of complaints. Of course, they used my money for investment/interest. The recycling of this scam on perhaps hundreds of thousands or millions probably keeps a large average investment balance from everyone's money (even one month's worth). Must make a lot of money this way, and they probably avoid criminal prosecution as they claim customer's responsibility to cancel, and they do eventually give your money back.

I have no idea who the people in this company's information are except for my ex-husband. This check also turned up a lengthy criminal history and other unsavory things. I am a teacher and have had to go through a state investigation, plus an FBI check for criminal history, had my fingerprints checked by the FBI, the local Sheriff's department, a Homeland Security check. My application for teaching and background checks were extensive and asked all prior names, prior marriages, social security number, employment history, education history, states I've lived in and much more. I understand why these agencies would want this information as they want to make sure people are fit to teach children and I wholeheartedly believe if they would have found my information inaccurate that I would not be teaching.
Since my husband is looking for a way to cover his infidelities and that he owes me a large sum of money, he is using this information to cover himself and his lack of integrity. He also took this to my school system and I may be put on unpaid leave pending new background checks. I have no problem with new background checks, but they will take up to three months which will financially devastate me as I have a house payment, my own school loans, support for my own college student children and much more. I have also been relieved of my duties as a foster parent because my husband shared the information with the local family services.
I am devastated that this is happening. Though my new background checks through my school district will prove this company incorrect, the damage has been done. Do not use this company and though I don't know, but other companies like this as the information may be just as bad. If you have questions, go to law enforcement, Homeland Security as well as the FBI for background information on people. Well, I already knew that. He only offered to cancel the account, when I called on November 6, 2011. He did not offer to refund my money. Why did he offer to cancel the account and not return what I paid for, as advertised by Checkmate?
I got my statement from the bank, and found where he still billed me for $19.86 for a canceled account. I then called Checkmate again on November 22. He was argumentative, and would not take 'no' for an answer. Common sense would tell you to refund a customer for services not rendered. Why did he even think I called in the first place? I had a similar experience with Clickbank. The lady refunded the entire amount, without ever asking. I should not have had to ask. InstantCheckmate.com makes a profit by selling personal information to others online. Information such as current and past addresses, known relatives, phone numbers, everything. The site even gives a map of the address. Too much personal information is shown and there is no mention of how to get your information removed. I have not given my permission for that information to be posted and fear that it may be dangerous.

I tried to cancel membership and did. I only wanted one month and was told I ordered a full year and the company will not refund me the difference. They will not identify themselves other than an 866 number. I want them to do the right thing. I paid $179.40 for one report. I am willing to pay for a month's membership but they will not budge.
