State Farm has partnered with Trupanion to offer pet insurance nationwide. Trupanion has been in business for over 25 years. It offers one plan that often comes with a customizable deductible.

In 48 states, Trupanion offers 90% co-insurance with customizable deductibles ($0 to $1,000) to allow pet parents to choose a monthly cost that works for them. In a few states, it is testing a “next generation product” that allows pet owners to customize a copay for between 50% and 90%. With this customizable copay, Trupanion got rid of its standard deductible, Nick VinZant, director of public relations at Trupanion, said in an email.

Trupanion also reports not to limit payouts per pet for eligible bills.

In most states, Trupanion covers both dogs and cats. It offers one standardized plan that can cover up to 90% of your eligible veterinarian bill. Its plans only cover dogs and cats under the age of 14 with no preexisting conditions. Trupanion works with licensed vets nationwide and in Canada, Australia and Puerto Rico.

If you need to utilize your pet’s insurance, it can pay your vet directly through VetDirect Pay (if the provider accepts it). VetDirect Pay is a software that allows Trupanion to pay a vet bill at the time of checkout.

If your vet doesn’t accommodate VetDirect Pay, Trupanion will reimburse you directly. To get reimbursed, you’ll have to submit an invoice to Trupanion. Because there are no payout limits, according to Trupanion, you can repeat this process as many times as your animal needs.

You can also cancel your plan at any time for any reason. If you cancel within the first 30 days of your policy and haven’t filed a claim, you’re eligible to receive a 100% reimbursement of your premium and enrollment fee.

Enrollment fees vary by location, a Trupanion spokesperson wrote via the website chat feature. Most states allow just one enrollment fee of $35 for the entire policy. If you add more pets, you won’t have to pay another enrollment fee.

State Farm members receive no additional discounts, benefits or perks for signing up for Trupanion from the link on the State Farm website, a Trupanion spokesperson confirmed.

Trupanion offers one insurance plan that, in most states, covers up to 90% of your eligible vet bill and doesn’t have a limit on payouts. While it only offers one plan, Trupanion also offers two add-on services — Recovery & Complementary Care plan and Pet Owner Assistance Package.

Trupanion does not cover preexisting conditions, wellness care — such as parasite control or vaccinations — exam fees and any applicable taxes. Additionally, dogs and cats over the age of 14 are not covered.

Its plan has two waiting periods before coverage can begin for your pet. There is a five-day waiting period for injuries and a 30-day waiting period for illnesses. If an illness occurs before the 30 days are up, it is considered a preexisting condition and will not be covered.

The cost for a Trupanion plan is customizable to your needs. It allows you to choose the deductible that best fits your situation, which will determine your monthly payment. The table below provides an estimated cost for a fictitious dog that’s covered by Trupanion. Pricing may vary depending on animal type, age, breed and location.

Estimated monthly costs

Trupanion offers two optional add-on packages for an additional cost per month. The Recovery and Complementary Care add-on costs an extra $6.84 per month, and the Pet Owner Assistance add-on costs an additional $4.95 per month.

A one-time administration fee of $35 will also be charged to your first month's payment if you purchase either or both of these plans. However, enrollment fees may vary by location, a Trupanion spokesperson said in a website chat.

You can increase your deductible at any time during your policy and decrease it only during the first 30 days from your policy start date.

Trupanion is a viable option for pet insurance that has been in business for over 25 years. While it only covers dogs and cats, Trupanion doesn’t limit its payouts. Note that calling and using the website chat feature is more likely to get you a quick response than sending an email.
