How does Figo Pet Insurance work?

Figo Pet Insurance reimburses you for vet costs for your dogs or cats when they have unexpected injuries or illness, according to the terms of your plan. You pay a monthly fee for coverage; you can visit any licensed vet in the world, then file a claim for reimbursement.

The company recommends using the Figo Pet Cloud app to file a claim; however, you can also complete the claims process online, by phone, by fax or by email — you just need a copy of your paid invoice and your pet’s medical records. Figo has takes an average of three days to close a claim (two days if the company has medical records). You can be reimbursed via direct deposit or mailed check. Depending on your plan, you may have an unlimited annual benefit or a reimbursement level of up to 100%.

Figo offers a diminishing deductible, and the copy and deductible are waived for emergency life-saving treatment in the case of an accident (does not apply to illnesses). Holistic care is also included in the base policy.

What does Figo Pet Insurance cover?

When your dog or cat has a new injury, accident or illness, Figo covers costs for the following:

  • Emergency and hospitalization
  • Surgery
  • Cancer treatment
  • Lab and diagnostic testing
  • Prosthetics and orthopedics
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Food and Drug Administration-approved prescriptions

Figo does not cover:

  • Preexisting conditions
  • Experimental or cosmetic procedures
  • Care related to breeding and birth
  • Most parasites

Figo offers three add-on coverage options:

  • Veterinary Exam Fees: This add-on helps cover exam or consultation fees associated with an eligible illness or accident. It does not cover exam fees related to routine, wellness or preventative visits.
  • Extra Care Pack: The Extra care pack helps cover costs for cremation and burial (up to $250), lost pet advertising and award, vacation cancellation caused by a pet emergency, board fees, pet theft or loss caused by straying (up to $150) and third-party property damage liability (up to $10,000 per policy period and subject to a separate deductible).
  • Wellness: You can add routine care coverage to any plan to help pay for the cost of vaccinations, spaying or neutering, heartworm prevention, dental care and more. The company offers a Basic and Plus wellness add-on — the Plus add-on has higher annual maximums.

How much does Figo Pet Insurance cost?

Figo offers three plans: Essential, Preferred and Ultimate. All plans cover the same items but have different annual benefit amounts.

You can get a free monthly premium quote online. To give you an idea of what you can expect to pay, we got quotes for two different dogs in Tulsa, Oklahoma: a 3-year-old male golden retriever and a 12-year-old female Maltese.

For both quotes, we went with the company’s preselected options for annual deductible and reimbursement percentages.

For the golden retriever, the company suggested an 80% reimbursement and $250 deductible.

Annual benefitMonthly cost
Essential$5,000$27.16
Preferred$10,000$31.69
UltimateUnlimited$35.97

The Veterinary Exam Fees would cost an addtional $6.46 a month, and the Extra Care Pack costs an additional $6.62 a month. The Wellness Basic option would cost an additional $9.50 a month, while the Wellness Plus option is an additional $16.50 each month.

For the Maltese, the company preselected a 70% reimbursement rate and $750 deductible.

Annual benefitMonthly cost
Essential$5,000$35.53
Preferred$10,000$41.44
UltimateUnlimited$47.06

Adding the Veterinary Exam Fees option would cost another $8.46 a month, and the Extra Care Pack would cost an extra $6.62 a month. The Wellness add-on would cost $9.50 a month, and Wellness Plus would cost $16.50 a month.

Your monthly cost increases or decreases based on the reimbursement percentage and deductible you select. To lower your monthly premium, choose a lower reimbursement level or a higher annual deductible.

We switched to Figo because they claimed to provide more coverage for about the same cost as our prior pet insurance. In the last year, since we switched our dog experiences new a illness and an injury. They have denied every claim and everything is processed through AI. When you submit a dispute they continue to deny claims even though you point out discrepancies in their policy. Waste of money.

Absolutely disgraceful experience. My name is Tiam **, and I will never recommend Figo to anyone. Figo denied my claim by calling it a pre-existing condition. I appealed the decision and went out of my way to obtain a signed letter from the Chief Medical Officer of the treating veterinary hospital, who stated that my dog’s episodes are not related and should not be considered pre-existing. Even after providing that documentation, my appeal has continued to drag on.

At this point, I have had no choice but to file a complaint with the Florida Department of Financial Services. The Department has informed me that they are still waiting for a response from Figo and have advised me that continued failure to respond can expose the company to administrative and financial penalties. The fact that a state regulator is still waiting on Figo to respond says everything about how this company handles its customers.

I’ve done everything that has been asked of me. I’ve submitted every record, gone back to my veterinarian for additional documentation, filed a formal appeal, and even involved the State of Florida because I believe this claim has been handled unfairly. Meanwhile, I’m left carrying over $1,500 in veterinary expenses while Figo continues to delay. This company has no problem collecting your premiums every month, but when it’s time to honor the policy, the process becomes delays, denials, and endless hoops to jump through. If you’re considering pet insurance, read the reviews carefully before trusting Figo with your pet or your money. – Tiam

I bought this insurance thinking it would be great if it is back by Costco but I was wrong! This is a SCAM!! I filed my first claim of less than $200 sending all the paperwork back to them related to my pet's injury and also the last year of pet's exams (which I have with Banfield Pet Hospital in a wellness plan) and the underwriter requested more paperwork, some of them already in the claim department. My only conclusion of requesting so much paperwork for this small claim is to have the customer get tired of the claim so he can abandon it (as I did). I did purchase a much cheaper insurance with the same deductibles, etc. with PetsBets and do not want any more business with this company. I think Costco should review the qualification of this company before having it as a referral for your pet insurance.

Make sure to read the fine print on their waiting periods for specific issues. When you have an emergency and your dog is literally yelping in pain with no pre-existing issues, and you end up with thousands in medical bills, they won't cover it, if it's not past the waiting period.

I went with Figo because it was competitively priced. But with that price came terrible service. Very slow claim processing and they bombard you with requests for additional records. At the time I signed up they were offering a small Amazon gift card. I waited weeks and called 6 times before I received it. That alone should have indicated how poor their service is when they can’t even get an incentive offer out to a new customer. I cancelled before the first and only claim I submitted had been processed. The claim was just for a tummy ache.

If he had been truly injured in some way I imagine it would have been even more complicated with longer review times. I got the feeling the additional record requests and slow claim processing is an effort to stall payment. I would avoid this company. The savings aren’t worth the hassle.

They were great the first year I had them. Easy claim submission and quick turn around with quick reimbursement via direct deposit. The past year has been the complete opposite. Takes one to two months for a claim to be reimbursed. Reimbursements are low compared to cost. The amount of records they request now is also ridiculous. Would NOT recommend since everything they claim to be is no longer true.

I have had Figo for 4+ years and I used to recommend it to people because the process was smooth and reimbursement was quick. For the past year it has been horrible and when I get a response from Figo I have had to go back and forth many times with the same questions and answers from me because they don't read or listen the first time to the problem. My dog has allergies and has been on the program since before those allergies came about or were known and I still have difficulty getting reimbursed in a timely manner. I've had to keep a close eye on all my claims because without my constant reviewing the claims get closed or not looked at. In my account in the app I still have a claim listed from March which is crazy. If my pet didn't have what would now be a preexisting condition I would 100% be switching to a different provider.

They never payout any claims and give you a garbage excuse not to. The better option is to take the monthly premiums and deductible and put it in a rainy day account and you will end up doing better. I am reporting them to the insurance commissioner so they can investigate this scam of an operation.

Horrible company. Before moving forward with services at the vet, we specifically called and asked multiple questions to confirm what would and would not be covered. We relied on the information given to us over the phone, only to later find out the coverage was denied. When we called back for help, the representatives offered no real solution, refused to escalate the issue to a supervisor, and would not review the recorded calls to verify what we had originally been told. On top of that, they also refused to fully cover our puppy’s required vaccinations, claiming we had somehow already maxed out the vaccine coverage. Extremely disappointing customer service and communication overall.

I am extremely disappointed with how my pet insurance claim was handled. We submitted our claim on 1/6/2026 and received confirmation on 1/10/2026 that it was open. Then on 1/23/2026, we were told additional documents were needed from the vet. I immediately collected everything and submitted the requested documentation. By 1/28/2026, I noticed the claim had been closed without clear explanation, so I had to resubmit a brand-new claim with all documents and invoices attached.

After speaking to a representative, I was told they had everything they needed and only needed confirmation that we did not use Spot Insurance (which we did not). On 1/29/2026, they closed the duplicate claim and assured me the original was being processed. On 1/30/2026, I received an EOB showing the payment amount. However, as of 2/11/2026, no payment had been deposited. When I called, I was told there was an “issue posting the amount” and that they would now be issuing a check, which could take 2–4 more weeks to receive.

This entire process has been frustrating, disorganized, and unnecessarily delayed. I had to follow up multiple times, resubmit documents, and correct issues that should have been handled internally. Communication was inconsistent, and the lack of proactive updates made the experience even worse. For a service that is supposed to provide peace of mind during stressful situations, this process has done the opposite. I would not recommend this company based on my experience.

This exact behavior happened with my case. Claim Number: **. The FIGO claims team appears extremely lazy and careless. On my most recent claim, the veterinary receipt clearly showed a prior balance adjustment, yet instead of doing basic due diligence, they closed the entire claim as “Non-Covered Charges” without any real explanation. They did not call the veterinary clinic. They did not request clarification properly. They did not cite a single policy exclusion. They simply saw a line item showing a balance adjustment on the receipt and auto-denied the claim. This is especially unacceptable because the visit was for a corneal ulcer, a legitimate medical condition that is clearly covered under their policy. Denying a covered medical condition over a resolved accounting line shows a complete lack of effort and medical review.

I appealed this case. This is what they responded: CLAIM IS NOT DENIED, IT IS JUST CLOSED. FIGO’s claims adjuster is extremely irresponsible and lazy. I submitted a paid receipt with complete veterinarian information that FIGO already has on file for my dog. Instead of doing their job and verifying directly with my vet, the adjuster claimed they “attempted to call,” then closed the claim without verification. If your pet is seriously ill and you actually need reimbursement, be careful. FIGO will delay, deflect, and rely on adjuster laziness to avoid paying claims.

Full Review – Why FIGO Failed My Dog. I deeply regret choosing FIGO for my dog, Loc. I pay over $100 per month in premiums, yet every claim is handled with extreme delay and minimal effort. A standard claim takes weeks to review. An appeal can take an entire month, only to be auto-denied without any meaningful medical evaluation. My dog is medically fragile, with: Chronic anemia. Immune suppression. Cancer history. Severe gastrointestinal malabsorption. The treatments submitted in this claim were life-supportive medical care, not wellness supplements. They were explicitly prescribed by his veterinarian as part of a medically necessary treatment plan.

FIGO acknowledged in writing that these items were part of the treatment plan. However, instead of: Contacting the veterinarian (whose information was clearly provided), Requesting clarification, Or conducting any medical due diligence, FIGO chose the fastest and most negligent route: Categorize everything as “supplements” and deny the entire claim. This was not a medical decision. It was an administrative shortcut. Pattern of Delay, Denial, and Non-Communication. FIGO’s claims process appears structurally designed to delay, discourage, and deny, especially when a pet has serious or costly medical conditions. There is: No proactive communication. No vet outreach. No explanation-based denial. No evidence of case-by-case medical review. Only automated responses and blanket exclusions.

By contrast, other pet insurers do reimburse medically necessary supportive therapies when prescribed for conditions such as anemia, malabsorption, or cancer recovery. FIGO categorically refuses coverage while continuing to collect high monthly premiums. Final Assessment. FIGO demonstrates: Extremely slow claim processing. Poor follow-through. Lack of communication. No meaningful medical review. A denial pattern that feels automatic, not clinical. Choosing FIGO was a serious mistake. I stayed only because this plan was offered through Costco, and I now fully regret that decision. If your pet has real medical needs, especially chronic or complex conditions, avoid FIGO at all costs.

I chose the most expensive plan, which mentioned that it'll cover mostly everything. I submitted the bill, and they cover NOTHING. Called customer service and they denied and comes up with excuses why it was not covered. I am going to cancel with them and go somewhere else. DON'T buy insurance from this company. It's a fraud.

I do not recommend them. They denied my pet's claim stating he was diagnosed with osteoarthritis referring to a date which clearly didn’t state anything near that and then came back with another date. Their appeal reply went to junk mail, and when I followed up they refused a second appeal even with the vet stating the dog had never been diagnosed or had osteoarthritis. They refused to work with us basically meaning nothing will be covered for him. What a waste.

I purchased the policy with Figo for my healthy 3-months-old puppy; Included wellness benefits (preventative) in the coverage.

      a) Figo only covered a very limited amount for the vaccinations and wellness exam that I specifically chose to pay the premium for ($165 out of $548.84).

      b) When I took Charlie to be examined for a few skin issues that I thought could've been problematic (after the waiting period was over!!!), Figo found a way to not cover it because I told the doctor that they appeared 4-5 days ago, and 5 days was apparently prior to the end of the waiting period. The fact that I said 4-5 AND that I waited to take him to the vet AFTER the waiting period was over didn't matter, I guess.

      c) But the last drop was the denial of half of the charges for the diarrhea appointment. To deny the coverage for the test for parasites while the puppy is having such severe diarrhea is absurd! And the medication the vet prescribed was not "medicated" enough, it was too "natural" for Figo, so they didn’t cover it as well. I refuse to give my business to the insurance company that has no care for animals and only cares for their bottom line.

When I submitted the claim they kept denying asking for some stupid documents that me and my vet kept sending. After trying and trying and calling and calling they denied any refunds and there is not a detailed explanation of why.

Every time I call I kept getting a speech from their representative with not real solutions. The first person I spoke to is Genesis, she did not resolve the problem. They all kept saying the same stupids things, documents are needed. Anyways keep away from these scammers, do not waste your money. High Premiums & Crazy Hike at Renewal. Figo increased my premiums by 40% and 31%. Now over $310/mo for two healthy dogs. I've been using Figo for several years. I just renewed my policies for a new zip code in March 2025 for a 5yr 2mo old dog and a 7yr 3mo dog. The monthly premiums increased less than $10 per policy due to a new zipcode to $118/mo and $114/mo for each dog respectively ($232/mo total). That’s fine. However, upon autorenewal in May 2025 (only 2 months later) Figo is now increasing the premiums to $165 and $149 per month citing age, breed, and zip code. There was no change in zipcode since the March renewal, no change in breed (obviously), so the only cited reason by Figo that did actually change is age... By two months! How on earth do they justify a 40% and 31% increase in cost for a 2 month increase in age!?

These are two healthy dogs/breeds with no persistent health issues and who are not particularly old. I understand Figo has the right to increase premiums by whatever amount they desire, however their cited reason does not make sense to me. Only reason they get two stars and not one is because they paid claims when I submitted and did not scam me. However, we will be cancelling because nearly $4,000 a year is absurd and I am afraid of how much they will jack up the price next time if we stay. Honestly, the insurance has not even been cost effective overall. Even after filing claims I am still probably in the red compared to the premiums I've paid over the lifetime of the policies. The only benefit I see is you spread the cost of big vet bills out, but you definitely pay them for the privilege to do so.

I thought that this insurance will be good since it is connected with Costco. Buyers should read the fine prints of this insurance as it misleads customers that it covers a lot of things. It says on its website that it covers surgery. My dog had a revision surgery from spaying complication and I did not get reimbursed with anything, saying that spaying is elective and it does not cover it. She also had deciduous teeth removed, which were not covered as well. I wonder why it was not covered at all, given that deciduous teeth can cause problems to dogs. You don’t get reimbursed for preventative meds for fleas, ticks etc. A LOT of common procedures are not covered in this insurance. I found out that there are many other insurances out there that will cover these type procedures for my dog. I think it was a waste of money paying for this insurance. I don’t really think I’m getting my money’s worth. This company needs to be reviewed.

DO NOT GET THIS INSURANCE. They are liars and frauds. They spend WEEKS finding any way possible to deny even the smallest claim. I purchased the accident/injury/illness + upgraded to cover spay/rabies/microchip and flea meds. My puppy is now 7 months old, and the last straw was when they made excuses for over a month about not paying the spay/microchip. When I called 3 times to try to get this corrected, the first woman lied and said they would pay it in 7 days, 2 weeks later some guy said he'd have someone return my call to address my concerns. Never happened.

The last was a nasty woman that didn't even want to discuss the issue just offered to cancel my policy then hung up on me. Hateful, liars and frauds. I will be looking for something that pays direct to vet so I don't have to stress submitting claims and then worrying whether the company will pay as promised. They got my $$$ for months on time, no problems but now that I've seen the "true" customer reviews, not the bought and paid for ones and after 5 months of fighting for every claim I submitted and was supposed to be paid out in 2.6 days (YEAH, RIGHT!). I'm glad they showed their true colors so soon, so I won't be wasting my money or jeopardizing my baby girl's health because they refuse to pay what they claim they will.

Figo Pet Insurance misleads customers into believing they have reliable coverage, only to unjustly deny claims, leaving policyholders with unexpected and unaffordable vet bills. My Experience. I purchased a Figo policy through Costco, trusting their reputation. When my dog, Tony, suffered an isolated gastrointestinal issue, Figo denied my claim, falsely stating it was pre-existing, despite clear medical evidence from my veterinarian, Dr. ** (Oak Grove Veterinary Hospital), who explicitly confirmed: "P’s recent visit for GI issues of bloody stools and vomiting is an isolated incident and has not been a cause of any of P’s previous exams for digestive issues. P has presented previously with negative fecal tests and unremarkable radiographs, except for gas in the stomach. This recent case is not related to any previous GI issues and is not chronic."

Despite this, Figo wrongfully denied my claim to avoid payout. Pattern of Deceptive Practices. I am not alone. Thousands of pet owners have experienced similar denials, as reflected in Figo’s 1-star BBB rating and 1.5-star Consumer Affairs rating. This systematic fraud maximizes profits at pet owners' expense, forcing many to surrender pets to shelters due to unaffordable vet costs.

      Formal Actions Requested.

      I urge the BBB to:
      1. Investigate Figo for fraudulent and deceptive practices.
      2. Hold them accountable for misleading advertising and wrongful denials.

      3. Issue a consumer warning about their exploitative policies.

Escalation of Complaint. I have also filed a formal complaint with the California Department of Insurance and will escalate this matter to:
      • The Governor of California for stricter pet insurance regulations.
      • State senators and consumer protection groups to expose these predatory practices.
      • Costco leadership to reconsider their endorsement of Figo.
      • Social media and consumer advocacy platforms to raise awareness.

I urge the Consumer Affairs to take swift action before more pet owners fall victim. Please provide a formal response on how this will be addressed.

Much like most pet insurance buyers, I had hoped to never need it. Alas, I did. My dog had a (non cancerous) mass on his toe. Between testing and medication, the bills began racking up. Finally the only solution was surgery. The first claim I made for the vet visits/testing/etc, took a few days and a couple emails with my vet for all the information they needed; and the allotted amount was applied to my deductible. The second claim was for his surgery, that took less than a week and the money (sans remaining deductible) was in my bank account on the 7th day from the claim being filed. Very little input was required from me and I could focus on my pet's recovery. I knew what to expect on what was and wasn’t covered and they were quick to get me my reimbursement. I love and recommend Figo for sure.
