How does Figo Pet Insurance work?

Figo Pet Insurance reimburses you for vet costs for your dogs or cats when they have unexpected injuries or illness, according to the terms of your plan. You pay a monthly fee for coverage; you can visit any licensed vet in the world, then file a claim for reimbursement.

The company recommends using the Figo Pet Cloud app to file a claim; however, you can also complete the claims process online, by phone, by fax or by email — you just need a copy of your paid invoice and your pet’s medical records. Figo has takes an average of three days to close a claim (two days if the company has medical records). You can be reimbursed via direct deposit or mailed check. Depending on your plan, you may have an unlimited annual benefit or a reimbursement level of up to 100%.

Figo offers a diminishing deductible, and the copy and deductible are waived for emergency life-saving treatment in the case of an accident (does not apply to illnesses). Holistic care is also included in the base policy.

What does Figo Pet Insurance cover?

When your dog or cat has a new injury, accident or illness, Figo covers costs for the following:

  • Emergency and hospitalization
  • Surgery
  • Cancer treatment
  • Lab and diagnostic testing
  • Prosthetics and orthopedics
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Food and Drug Administration-approved prescriptions

Figo does not cover:

  • Preexisting conditions
  • Experimental or cosmetic procedures
  • Care related to breeding and birth
  • Most parasites

Figo offers three add-on coverage options:

  • Veterinary Exam Fees: This add-on helps cover exam or consultation fees associated with an eligible illness or accident. It does not cover exam fees related to routine, wellness or preventative visits.
  • Extra Care Pack: The Extra care pack helps cover costs for cremation and burial (up to $250), lost pet advertising and award, vacation cancellation caused by a pet emergency, board fees, pet theft or loss caused by straying (up to $150) and third-party property damage liability (up to $10,000 per policy period and subject to a separate deductible).
  • Wellness: You can add routine care coverage to any plan to help pay for the cost of vaccinations, spaying or neutering, heartworm prevention, dental care and more. The company offers a Basic and Plus wellness add-on — the Plus add-on has higher annual maximums.

How much does Figo Pet Insurance cost?

Figo offers three plans: Essential, Preferred and Ultimate. All plans cover the same items but have different annual benefit amounts.

You can get a free monthly premium quote online. To give you an idea of what you can expect to pay, we got quotes for two different dogs in Tulsa, Oklahoma: a 3-year-old male golden retriever and a 12-year-old female Maltese.

For both quotes, we went with the company’s preselected options for annual deductible and reimbursement percentages.

For the golden retriever, the company suggested an 80% reimbursement and $250 deductible.

Annual benefitMonthly cost
Essential$5,000$27.16
Preferred$10,000$31.69
UltimateUnlimited$35.97

The Veterinary Exam Fees would cost an addtional $6.46 a month, and the Extra Care Pack costs an additional $6.62 a month. The Wellness Basic option would cost an additional $9.50 a month, while the Wellness Plus option is an additional $16.50 each month.

For the Maltese, the company preselected a 70% reimbursement rate and $750 deductible.

Annual benefitMonthly cost
Essential$5,000$35.53
Preferred$10,000$41.44
UltimateUnlimited$47.06

Adding the Veterinary Exam Fees option would cost another $8.46 a month, and the Extra Care Pack would cost an extra $6.62 a month. The Wellness add-on would cost $9.50 a month, and Wellness Plus would cost $16.50 a month.

Your monthly cost increases or decreases based on the reimbursement percentage and deductible you select. To lower your monthly premium, choose a lower reimbursement level or a higher annual deductible.

Absolutely awful. I was warned this was a racket and they would deny claims in any way possible, and my first claim in over three years they denied immediately. DO NOT PURCHASE. If I could give this zero stars I would.

I got Figo Pet Insurance for my 4 dogs. After almost getting through their waiting period my dog got a lump on her leg...it was not there prior to getting the insurance. Sure enough cancer..not sure what kind coz it cost 500 to get it checked out. I was 14 days from it being covered and they denied it. I ended up after 3-4 mos having to put her down. In the meantime I decided to cancel all policies for my 4 dogs. It is now 31 BUSINESS days and still no refund.

I have called several times to check on it and always told it is being refunded...I have asked to talk to supervisor a few times...always NO ONE is available...and always told someone will call back but NO ONE calls back...and NO REFUND AND NO HEALTH CARE when my dog really needed it. Don't waste your money. Set it aside in an account and if something happens you'll have it. I found other reviews --- too late--- on Reddit and other places saying this company will take your money but not give you the health care your pets deserve. Find someone else!

I am not recommending this insurance. It is difficult to communicate with them. If you want an email containing an explanation of benefits, you need to call to ask for an email to understand why your claim was not paid. The person who answers the phone is patient and tries to do her job, but the insurance policy itself is very disappointing. Pet Cloud is easy to use to submit claims. They try to do anything in their power to reject every claim, no matter how legitimate and how extensive the provided paperwork is.

Went to VET and they took great care of her. $700 emergency and they reimbursed me $124.07. WORST PET INS EVER!!!! They didn’t cover the exam! How can they treat her w/o an exam? Didn’t pay for pain meds!! Terrible.

So sad Costco has linked to this scam insurance program when you normally regard them as providing value and quality; FIGO is neither. They con you with introductory price with waiting periods, then after 1 year jack the price 65%. My 7 yr. old lab with no history of illness, accident or claims, jumped from $787 to $1198 with no claims. Go elsewhere for insurance for your pet and COSTCO, stop representing poor quality rip offs like FIGO the pyramid scheme of insurance.

What a scam! Do not buy this insurance. @Costco should be ashamed of such a scam. Website doesn't work and when it does, can't open the pdf's, very slow in opening pages, refuse every claim saying it's pre-condition. How can a neuter dog have a pre-condition. Sue them, shut them down, don't be foolish.

I had a $500 deductible with a 70% "reimbursement" plan. One would think that it would cover 70%. NOT AT ALL. After my dog started vomiting and could not stop I decided to take him to the after hours vet. He is 2.5 years old and has no preexisting condition. I had a false sense of confidence because I had pet insurance. Had I not had pet insurance I probably would have waited a bit before taking him to the vet. My dog was fine. The visit was $1,000 and Figo covered $100? It is a SCAM!

I thought I had done a thorough job comparing pet insurance prior to picking Figo - and it was tied to Costco, which made me feel more secure choosing them for our dogs. Before choosing Figo, my older dog had great coverage with Nationwide, and the puppy we adopted was covered by Trupanion. The puppy has a lot of anxiety and Trupanion covered that complaint - what I didn't realize was that Figo would consider that a preexisting condition and exclude all behavior issues from coverage. My older dog has displayed some aggressive behavior towards the puppy, and now we need to see a behavior specialist.

Ironically, when we went to the vet to get an ortho certification for Figo, so we didn't have to wait 6 months for coverage, the vet put in the notes that my older dog was a little anxious. She has also been treated in the past for her anxiety with fireworks. Now Figo will likely not cover her treatment of aggressive behavior and will consider all behavior issues to be preexisting. They don't tell you ahead of time what they consider "preexisting" - they just comb through their medical records to find ways to deny claims. I am so disappointed, and the worse part is that we had coverage for both dogs with the other companies and now we are facing thousands of dollars of vet bills without coverage.

I have had a truly awful experience with Figo, if I could give it 0 stars I would. I am not usually a review person, but I hate the idea of any other pet parent going through this hell. After an extremely stressful time, with multiple ER visits, Figo has done nothing but add to my stress. They have denied almost everything I submitted, despite the fact that these services should be covered under the policy. They did not properly review the medical documents I provided, and provided denial codes that were not applicable to the case. For example, in one case they denied my claim because they said it was heartworm related - this was completely unsubstantiated, as she was hospitalized for high kidney levels, completely unrelated to heartworm. The medical records I provided do not even mention the word 'heartworm' in them.

I submitted an appeal, which they also denied & said if I wanted to appeal further I would have to obtain evidence that it was not heartworm related. It is baffling to me that they can deny a claim with no evidence to support their denial, and then demand that I provide evidence to prove they are wrong. Adding these bad faith hoops for pet owners to jump through, when they're often already dealing with the stress of a sick pet, is truly reprehensible. I've spent hours of my time dealing with Figo's nonsense already, and am now faced with either trying to battle them further or give up the thousands of dollars they owe me. This company has given me nothing but stress during an already extremely stressful time. Please do yourself a favor and find insurance elsewhere.

My Lhaso Apso is 11 and has had some problems in the past but I thought I would give it a try. After only having the insurance for 10 days my dog began bumping into furniture so I knew she had to have something wrong with her eyes. Called a specialist to have her checked out and she had two detached retinas which caused sudden blindness. This was on the 11th day. Sent in claim and it went in review. Several blood tests were ordered and I had those done on the 14th day. Both claims denied because there was a 14 day waiting period. Ok makes sense, no problem!

Took her back for follow up on the 25th. Sent in that claim. Now it was denied because now it is considered preexisting. I just thought that they would not pay anything during the first 14 days. Didn’t realize they would now say Pre-existing. Make sure you read your policy carefully! My fault I guess but no way was I going to wait 4 more days to have my dog examined. Now anything she has because of bloodwork can be determined Pre-existing although she has not been diagnosed with anything yet but detached retinas.
