How does Figo Pet Insurance work?

Figo Pet Insurance reimburses you for vet costs for your dogs or cats when they have unexpected injuries or illness, according to the terms of your plan. You pay a monthly fee for coverage; you can visit any licensed vet in the world, then file a claim for reimbursement.

The company recommends using the Figo Pet Cloud app to file a claim; however, you can also complete the claims process online, by phone, by fax or by email — you just need a copy of your paid invoice and your pet’s medical records. Figo has takes an average of three days to close a claim (two days if the company has medical records). You can be reimbursed via direct deposit or mailed check. Depending on your plan, you may have an unlimited annual benefit or a reimbursement level of up to 100%.

Figo offers a diminishing deductible, and the copy and deductible are waived for emergency life-saving treatment in the case of an accident (does not apply to illnesses). Holistic care is also included in the base policy.

What does Figo Pet Insurance cover?

When your dog or cat has a new injury, accident or illness, Figo covers costs for the following:

  • Emergency and hospitalization
  • Surgery
  • Cancer treatment
  • Lab and diagnostic testing
  • Prosthetics and orthopedics
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Food and Drug Administration-approved prescriptions

Figo does not cover:

  • Preexisting conditions
  • Experimental or cosmetic procedures
  • Care related to breeding and birth
  • Most parasites

Figo offers three add-on coverage options:

  • Veterinary Exam Fees: This add-on helps cover exam or consultation fees associated with an eligible illness or accident. It does not cover exam fees related to routine, wellness or preventative visits.
  • Extra Care Pack: The Extra care pack helps cover costs for cremation and burial (up to $250), lost pet advertising and award, vacation cancellation caused by a pet emergency, board fees, pet theft or loss caused by straying (up to $150) and third-party property damage liability (up to $10,000 per policy period and subject to a separate deductible).
  • Wellness: You can add routine care coverage to any plan to help pay for the cost of vaccinations, spaying or neutering, heartworm prevention, dental care and more. The company offers a Basic and Plus wellness add-on — the Plus add-on has higher annual maximums.

How much does Figo Pet Insurance cost?

Figo offers three plans: Essential, Preferred and Ultimate. All plans cover the same items but have different annual benefit amounts.

You can get a free monthly premium quote online. To give you an idea of what you can expect to pay, we got quotes for two different dogs in Tulsa, Oklahoma: a 3-year-old male golden retriever and a 12-year-old female Maltese.

For both quotes, we went with the company’s preselected options for annual deductible and reimbursement percentages.

For the golden retriever, the company suggested an 80% reimbursement and $250 deductible.

Annual benefitMonthly cost
Essential$5,000$27.16
Preferred$10,000$31.69
UltimateUnlimited$35.97

The Veterinary Exam Fees would cost an addtional $6.46 a month, and the Extra Care Pack costs an additional $6.62 a month. The Wellness Basic option would cost an additional $9.50 a month, while the Wellness Plus option is an additional $16.50 each month.

For the Maltese, the company preselected a 70% reimbursement rate and $750 deductible.

Annual benefitMonthly cost
Essential$5,000$35.53
Preferred$10,000$41.44
UltimateUnlimited$47.06

Adding the Veterinary Exam Fees option would cost another $8.46 a month, and the Extra Care Pack would cost an extra $6.62 a month. The Wellness add-on would cost $9.50 a month, and Wellness Plus would cost $16.50 a month.

Your monthly cost increases or decreases based on the reimbursement percentage and deductible you select. To lower your monthly premium, choose a lower reimbursement level or a higher annual deductible.

High Premiums & Crazy Hike at Renewal. Figo increased my premiums by 40% and 31%. Now over $310/mo for two healthy dogs. I've been using Figo for several years. I just renewed my policies for a new zip code in March 2025 for a 5yr 2mo old dog and a 7yr 3mo dog. The monthly premiums increased less than $10 per policy due to a new zipcode to $118/mo and $114/mo for each dog respectively ($232/mo total). That’s fine. However, upon autorenewal in May 2025 (only 2 months later) Figo is now increasing the premiums to $165 and $149 per month citing age, breed, and zip code. There was no change in zipcode since the March renewal, no change in breed (obviously), so the only cited reason by Figo that did actually change is age... By two months! How on earth do they justify a 40% and 31% increase in cost for a 2 month increase in age!?

These are two healthy dogs/breeds with no persistent health issues and who are not particularly old. I understand Figo has the right to increase premiums by whatever amount they desire, however their cited reason does not make sense to me. Only reason they get two stars and not one is because they paid claims when I submitted and did not scam me. However, we will be cancelling because nearly $4,000 a year is absurd and I am afraid of how much they will jack up the price next time if we stay. Honestly, the insurance has not even been cost effective overall. Even after filing claims I am still probably in the red compared to the premiums I've paid over the lifetime of the policies. The only benefit I see is you spread the cost of big vet bills out, but you definitely pay them for the privilege to do so.

I thought that this insurance will be good since it is connected with Costco. Buyers should read the fine prints of this insurance as it misleads customers that it covers a lot of things. It says on its website that it covers surgery. My dog had a revision surgery from spaying complication and I did not get reimbursed with anything, saying that spaying is elective and it does not cover it. She also had deciduous teeth removed, which were not covered as well. I wonder why it was not covered at all, given that deciduous teeth can cause problems to dogs. You don’t get reimbursed for preventative meds for fleas, ticks etc. A LOT of common procedures are not covered in this insurance. I found out that there are many other insurances out there that will cover these type procedures for my dog. I think it was a waste of money paying for this insurance. I don’t really think I’m getting my money’s worth. This company needs to be reviewed.

DO NOT GET THIS INSURANCE. They are liars and frauds. They spend WEEKS finding any way possible to deny even the smallest claim. I purchased the accident/injury/illness + upgraded to cover spay/rabies/microchip and flea meds. My puppy is now 7 months old, and the last straw was when they made excuses for over a month about not paying the spay/microchip. When I called 3 times to try to get this corrected, the first woman lied and said they would pay it in 7 days, 2 weeks later some guy said he'd have someone return my call to address my concerns. Never happened.

The last was a nasty woman that didn't even want to discuss the issue just offered to cancel my policy then hung up on me. Hateful, liars and frauds. I will be looking for something that pays direct to vet so I don't have to stress submitting claims and then worrying whether the company will pay as promised. They got my $$$ for months on time, no problems but now that I've seen the "true" customer reviews, not the bought and paid for ones and after 5 months of fighting for every claim I submitted and was supposed to be paid out in 2.6 days (YEAH, RIGHT!). I'm glad they showed their true colors so soon, so I won't be wasting my money or jeopardizing my baby girl's health because they refuse to pay what they claim they will.

Figo Pet Insurance misleads customers into believing they have reliable coverage, only to unjustly deny claims, leaving policyholders with unexpected and unaffordable vet bills. My Experience. I purchased a Figo policy through Costco, trusting their reputation. When my dog, Tony, suffered an isolated gastrointestinal issue, Figo denied my claim, falsely stating it was pre-existing, despite clear medical evidence from my veterinarian, Dr. ** (Oak Grove Veterinary Hospital), who explicitly confirmed: "P’s recent visit for GI issues of bloody stools and vomiting is an isolated incident and has not been a cause of any of P’s previous exams for digestive issues. P has presented previously with negative fecal tests and unremarkable radiographs, except for gas in the stomach. This recent case is not related to any previous GI issues and is not chronic."

Despite this, Figo wrongfully denied my claim to avoid payout. Pattern of Deceptive Practices. I am not alone. Thousands of pet owners have experienced similar denials, as reflected in Figo’s 1-star BBB rating and 1.5-star Consumer Affairs rating. This systematic fraud maximizes profits at pet owners' expense, forcing many to surrender pets to shelters due to unaffordable vet costs.

      Formal Actions Requested.

      I urge the BBB to:
      1. Investigate Figo for fraudulent and deceptive practices.
      2. Hold them accountable for misleading advertising and wrongful denials.

      3. Issue a consumer warning about their exploitative policies.

Escalation of Complaint. I have also filed a formal complaint with the California Department of Insurance and will escalate this matter to:
      • The Governor of California for stricter pet insurance regulations.
      • State senators and consumer protection groups to expose these predatory practices.
      • Costco leadership to reconsider their endorsement of Figo.
      • Social media and consumer advocacy platforms to raise awareness.

I urge the Consumer Affairs to take swift action before more pet owners fall victim. Please provide a formal response on how this will be addressed.

I thought I would be getting a fair and acceptable insurance for my dogs! They didn't cover the routine yearly exam and shots! If you are thinking about getting this insurance, please rethink your decision and find another provider. I would give negative stars if I could! Bad bad bad business and for me, a huge SCAM!

If I could give them negative stars, I would. This is the worst company. They are THIEVES. They have no intentions of paying out any claims. They use pre-existing condition as an excuse for everything which means automatic denial. Don't be lured in by the slightly lower premiums that they initially dangle in your face. Each year they will raise it with no real explanation or notification. You're better off burning your money. We are going back to PetMeds which may cost a little more but is worth it. They are hassle-free, fair and easy to use. You get what you pay for.

Much like most pet insurance buyers, I had hoped to never need it. Alas, I did. My dog had a (non cancerous) mass on his toe. Between testing and medication, the bills began racking up. Finally the only solution was surgery. The first claim I made for the vet visits/testing/etc, took a few days and a couple emails with my vet for all the information they needed; and the allotted amount was applied to my deductible. The second claim was for his surgery, that took less than a week and the money (sans remaining deductible) was in my bank account on the 7th day from the claim being filed. Very little input was required from me and I could focus on my pet's recovery. I knew what to expect on what was and wasn’t covered and they were quick to get me my reimbursement. I love and recommend Figo for sure.

I got Figo Pet Insurance for my 4 dogs. After almost getting through their waiting period my dog got a lump on her leg...it was not there prior to getting the insurance. Sure enough cancer..not sure what kind coz it cost 500 to get it checked out. I was 14 days from it being covered and they denied it. I ended up after 3-4 mos having to put her down. In the meantime I decided to cancel all policies for my 4 dogs. It is now 31 BUSINESS days and still no refund.

I have called several times to check on it and always told it is being refunded...I have asked to talk to supervisor a few times...always NO ONE is available...and always told someone will call back but NO ONE calls back...and NO REFUND AND NO HEALTH CARE when my dog really needed it. Don't waste your money. Set it aside in an account and if something happens you'll have it. I found other reviews --- too late--- on Reddit and other places saying this company will take your money but not give you the health care your pets deserve. Find someone else!
