How Spot Pet Insurance works
Spot Pet Insurance helps cover the cost of expensive vet bills when your pets are hurt or sick.
It works a lot like human health insurance regarding deductibles, premiums and preexisting conditions. There is also a 14-day waiting period between the day you purchase the coverage and when your pet begins coverage.
Insurance is one of those things that you hope you never have to use but are always thankful for when you do. Here’s how it works if your pet gets hurt or sick:
- Take your pet to the licensed vet of your choice.
- Get treatment and pay the bill.
- Submit your claim on the Spot Pet Insurance website by mail, phone, or fax.
- Receive reimbursement for your expenses based on your coverage plan.
Spot also gives you access to a 24/7 vet helpline by VetConnect that you can use for any questions related to your pet's health.
What does Spot Pet Insurance cover?
Spot Pet Insurance plans cover a range of illnesses and conditions that your cat or dog may experience in their lifetime. The company offers multiple coverage options, including:
- Accident-only coverage
- The accident-only policy does not cover any expenses related to illness. Accident-only coverage covers unexpected treatments your pet may need as a result of an accident, including:
- Alternative therapy
- End-of-life expenses
- IV fluids and medications
- Veterinary treatment and medical supplies
- MRIs
- Tooth extractions
- Poison control consultations
- Prescription medicine and supplements
- Surgery and hospitalization
- Stem cell therapy
- Accident and illness coverage
- Spot Pet Insurance’s accident and illness coverage, also called Spot-On Coverage, is a more comprehensive option that covers everything on the accident-only plan plus expenses related to the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Spot-On Coverage also covers the cost of microchipping your pet. This plan does not include expenses like breeding and pregnancy costs, boarding, grooming or other elective or cosmetic services.
- Coverage exclusions
- Before choosing an insurance plan for your pet, it’s crucial to understand what’s not covered so there aren’t any misunderstandings. Some of the most common coverage exclusions include:
- Preexisting conditions
- Aesthetic dental services
- Conditions occurring within the policy waiting period
- Grooming and nonmedical supplies
- Non-FDA treatment or supplements
- Pet diets
- Daycare or boarding
How much does Spot Pet Insurance cost?
The monthly cost of Spot Pet Insurance depends on your location and the coverage options you select. You can get a free Spot Pet Insurance quote on its website and customize your deductibles, premiums and reimbursement percentages. The premium is based on your pet's age, breed and where your pet lives.
Using the website’s free quote tool, we found that accident and illness coverage with 80% reimbursement and a $5,000 annual limit for a 2-year-old Cairn Terrier mix ranged from around $20 to $40 each month, depending on the deductible. Accident-only coverage with the same reimbursement and annual limit ranged from $15 to $20 a month.
Spot offers a 30-day money-back guarantee as long as you have made no claims on the policy. The guarantee is not available in New York.

My 5 yr old dog's insurance was transferred from the original company to Spot Pet Ins, a few months ago. He was in the process of undergoing/recovering from major back surgery for a herniated disc. Spot Pet Ins has been easy to work with and the claims have been processed easily and quickly. I was happy with my previous pet insurance and insured my 1 yr old with that company. However, I just switch him to Spot Pet Ins. The coverage is better for the cost and I have been happy with the customer service/claims experience. I definitely recommend Spot Pet Ins.

Spot Insurance is so fast in processing claims and obtaining records if needed. This is my first time getting pet insurance even though I had multiple dogs before. I was hesitant about which insurance to choose from because there's so many out there now but am so happy with Spot. Representatives are very knowledgeable and answers all my questions with care. Submitting a claim is so easy and reimbursement is quick. It's worth every penny I spend on the premiums with the stress free care I receive. Highly recommended.
The app has a couple of small issues that they are working to resolve, but it is a quick and easy way to submit claims. The turnaround for processing isn’t bad. It usually takes about a week to 10 days to get reimbursed. Overall, we are really happy with Spot Insurance and have recommended it to our Veterinarian for their customers. We have the Platinum Plan with preventative care coverage and the lowest deductible. The first year we went with the $1,000 deductible and we weren’t happy, but now we have a $100 deductible and they’ve been great to work with.
We pay for insurance, to cover the things that we don't want to pay out of pocket. When it comes time to issue a claim that's when you find out how good or bad your choice was of insurance companies. After over 1 year with my little girl being very healthy she decided to come up with an intestinal bacterial issue. I submitted my claim to Spot Insurance. My claim was paid promptly. No questions, no arguments, no nothing. You must have an authorized claim and after that it was painless. I chose to have the money sent directly to my checking account and I'm done. Spot insurance was a great decision for me.
Overall I've been happy with Spot Pet Insurance. They do take longer to process claims than other pet insurance companies I have been with, but they do get them processed. They have had to request records from my vet a couple times, the vet has responded same day, and it has taken me calling them to make them check to see if they have the requested records before they will stop emailing the vet asking for the records and sending me emails saying they need more info. There seems to be a disconnect between when records are received and when they are uploaded to the account and the claim status is changed. The issues I've had were relatively minor and the insurance company has been fair with my claims, though as previously stated, they take a bit longer than I'm used to when processing claims.
Spot's customer service was super helpful! When I was deciding on what pet insurance was best, I called their customer service line to get a more in-depth explanation of some things stated on their website. They explained everything I asked of them in great detail and were super welcoming to all of my questions!
Spot Pet Insurance is the best! I recommend it on Facebook to all those that ask. They are prompt on processing claims and they pay most of the bill! Can’t get any better than that.. It’s so easy to file a claim online. Also they keep you updated on your claim.
I usually do not give a perfect score on anything as there is always room for improvement. We were very pleased with our first experience with pet insurance. This was an initial puppy wellness visit and included shots. Well worth the initial cost. You always hope you never need to use insurance, but it is comforting to know it is there whenever you need it.
Spot Insurance is wonderful! We have a new puppy and Spot has been great with coverage, explanation of benefits and quick reimbursement. The website is also easy to use. We have peace of mind knowing our puppy is covered if anything were to happen.
I find submitting claims seamless and definitely reimbursed in a timely manner. The SPOT app is user friendly and the customer service is always very helpful when I have any questions. I would recommend SPOT to me friends for their pets.
