How Spot Pet Insurance works

Spot Pet Insurance helps cover the cost of expensive vet bills when your pets are hurt or sick.

It works a lot like human health insurance regarding deductibles, premiums and preexisting conditions. There is also a 14-day waiting period between the day you purchase the coverage and when your pet begins coverage.

Insurance is one of those things that you hope you never have to use, but are always thankful for when you do. Here’s how it works if your pet gets hurt or sick:

  1. Take your pet to the licensed vet of your choice.
  2. Get treatment and pay the bill.
  3. Submit your claim on the Spot Pet Insurance website by mail, phone or fax.
  4. Receive reimbursement for your expenses based on your coverage plan.

Spot also gives you access to a 24/7 vet helpline by VetAccess that you can use for any questions related to your pet's health.

What does Spot Pet Insurance cover?

Spot Pet Insurance plans cover a range of illnesses and conditions that your cat or dog may experience in their lifetime. It covers euthanasia, burial and cremation under all plans. Spot Pet Insurance offers multiple coverage options, including:

Accident-only coverage

The accident-only policy does not cover any expenses related to illness. Accident-only coverage covers unexpected treatments your pet may need as a result of an accident, including:

  • Vet exam fees
  • MRI or CT scans and X-rays
  • Surgery and hospitalizations
  • IV fluids and medications
  • Medical supplies (e.g., bandages)
  • Poison control consultation fees
  • Prescription medications
Accident and illness coverage

Spot Pet Insurance’s accident and illness coverage, also called Spot-On Coverage, is a more comprehensive option that covers everything on the accident-only plan, plus expenses related to the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, including:

  • Microchip implantation
  • Prescription pet food
  • Behavioral issues (e.g., anxiety-related compulsive behavior)
  • Skin, eye, and ear infections
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • Dental illnesses (e.g., periodontal disease)
  • Digestive illnesses (e.g., vomiting, diarrhea, IBD)
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Cancer and benign growths
  • Infectious diseases and parasite-borne illnesses
  • Orthopedic conditions (e.g., arthritis, cruciate ligament issues)
  • Advanced care (e.g., chemotherapy, stem-cell therapy)
  • Virtual vet visits
  • Alternative therapies (e.g., acupuncture, chiropractic, hydrotherapy)
Coverage exclusions

Before choosing an insurance plan for your pet, it’s crucial to understand what’s not covered so there aren’t any misunderstandings. Spot Pet Insurance  coverage exclusions include:

  • Preexisting conditions*
  • Cosmetic procedures (such as tail docking, ear cropping and declawing)
  • Conditions occurring within the policy waiting period
  • Breeding/pregnancy costs
  • Preventative/routine care (unless with an add-on)
  • Funeral Costs
  • Grooming and nonmedical supplies
  • Daycare or boarding

* Note: Spot Pet Insurance does allow coverage for curable preexisting conditions that have been symptom-free and treatment-free for 180 days, excluding knee and ligament conditions.

Preventative care add-on

Spot offers two preventative care add-ons — Gold and Platinum — that can be added to any accident-only or accident and illness policy starting at $9.95 per month. Each option provides fixed annual reimbursements for specific routine services, helping pet parents manage expected veterinary costs and support long-term wellness.

Gold includes cash back for:

Platinum includes all Gold benefits, plus:

  • Spaying or neutering
  • Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention

These fixed reimbursements apply once per year per service, regardless of the provider’s cost. Preventative care add-ons are especially helpful for early disease detection and can reduce the likelihood of expensive treatments later. You can choose any licensed vet in the U.S. or Canada.

Pet parents can add a wellness add-on at signup or during policy renewal. Upgrading from Gold to Platinum is also allowed. There is no waiting period for wellness coverage.

How much does Spot Pet Insurance cost?

The monthly cost of Spot Pet Insurance depends on your location and the coverage options you select. You can get a free Spot Pet Insurance quote on its website and customize your deductibles, premiums and reimbursement percentages. The premium is based on your pet's age, breed and where your pet lives.

Using the website’s free quote tool, we found that accident and illness coverage with 80% reimbursement and a $5,000 annual limit for a 2-year-old Cairn Terrier mix ranged from around $20 to $40 each month, depending on the deductible. Accident-only coverage with the same reimbursement and annual limit ranged from $15 to $20 a month.

Spot offers a 30-day money-back guarantee as long as you have made no claims on the policy. The guarantee is not available in New York.

If I could rate 0 stars I would...I am deeply frustrated and hurt by the customer service. My account was automatically debited monthly. First they took 2 payments for enrollment. With a wellness exam I was only reimbursed $20. This policy was for 2 dogs...recently had to get a Cytopoint injection for one that had never been diagnosed with allergies. This shot was a result of a landscaper spraying chemicals...the point is this 3 year old dog is now labeled as having environmental allergies...I called to speak to the lady that sold me the policy and was told in 3 separate phone calls I could not speak with her...I resubmitted the claim along with my vet resubmitted also. Denied again...

I tried calling to change my policy to take wellness off...they had just taken my monthly payment the day before, but they wanted an additional $65 for my other dog due to the fact she had not had any problems...with careful consideration and being spoke to like my vet was incompetent I canceled both policies. Just be aware I have paid $1355.16 to them in a year for 2 useless policies. I am sure if I the lady that sold me the policy it would have been totally different. The $1355.16 doesn't include the double payment at beginning of policy. My monthly payment was put back today into my checking account and guess what??? It's $6 short. Never again will I recommend SPOT pet insurance.

I'm not sure where all these good reviews are coming from, I got pet insurance for our 3 year-old who has been healthy all her life because we lost a dog a few months before to complications the diabetes. Thinking we were doing something good. Our 3 year old had her healthy yearly, then we switched vets another healthy appointment. Then she hurts her back unexpected. Spot refused covered because we couldn't give more vet records of her past, we didn't have any more, she was healthy and didn't go to the vet. The injury got so bad and then was in need of surgery, we had to put her down. Spot wouldn't cover anything. Total scam. Don't go with this company at all. Super traumatic for the whole family dealing with this. Don't recommend.

After adopting a dog last July that was around a year old, we set ourselves up with Spot. Jumped through all the hoops to get all the records we could and sent them in. When we adopted our little guy had no idea that he was dealing with worms of various sorts even after being dewormed by the rescue. I explained to the vet that we thought he had a sensitive stomach, had tried different diets but that he was still gassy and suffering from what seemed like chronic diarrhea. Turns out he was diagnosed with tapeworm, round worm, wing worm and eventually giardia over the next few months. Through out this time we dealt with a lot of diarrhea - a very common symptom of all of these worms.

After finally meeting out deductible and being very happy that we started receiving some money back ~ I received an email stating that Spot conducted an audit and determined that my dog's diarrhea is a preexisting condition. Not only will they not cover any claims for diarrhea for at least six months, but they took almost all of the 500 dollar deductible away and are making us start over. They used my non-medical degree description of my dog's symptoms in the vet notes to make this determination. Very unfair that they would take a symptom of a condition and make it into a preexisting condition!

Avoid this place at all costs as it is a scam. My dog had an allergic reaction to tick and flea medication and her skin was severely burned! Spot denied my claim saying it is secondary to elective procedure. Illness is illness. She is allergic to the medication and it’s preventative care so it’s not elective. Blacklisting this place for all our clients and family and friends.

I am being emphatic and strongly recommend that you AVOID Spot Pet Insurance under any circumstance. After almost a Year's worth of payments and premiums, I submitted a claim for an abscess tooth for my dog that needed surgery for her mouth was bleeding. Also, a large dog recently cut open her eyelid and blood was coming out and they refused a claim on that. Total scam.

Terrible — this is completely useless. You are literally paying for nothing. My advice: build your own savings account for your pet’s vet expenses. They backtrack for at least a month, and after waiting that long, they ask for additional documents from your vet. It’s simply ridiculous. The customer service is a joke — poor people working at this company, powerless and helpless. STAY AWAY. In Canada, your best options are TrueCompanion, Pet Plus, or simply using your own money. I spent weeks comparing plans and deeply regret choosing Spot On. Don’t do it.

I’m devastated by how Spot handled my dog Lilly’s claim. They denied it saying she had already been “diagnosed with an incurable kidney disease,” which is completely untrue. In June, Lilly only had slightly elevated enzyme levels — no diagnosis, no treatment, and no indication of kidney disease from her veterinarian. I switched to Spot because my previous insurer discontinued her policy and I wanted to keep protecting her in her final years. Instead of compassion, I received a denial based on false assumptions. Lilly is now gone, and the pain of losing her is already unbearable. What hurts even more is knowing this company made it worse — turning my grief into a battle to defend the truth. No pet parent should be made to feel dismissed or blamed when all they did was love and care for their animal. I hope Spot learns to treat families with honesty and empathy — because behind every policy there’s a life, a family, and a love that deserves respect. 💔

Spot placed so many barriers to my first claim, I canceled in frustration: 1) calls went to an off-shore answering service that was useless; 2) the claim was commingled with an invoice among my pet’s medical history and that had to be removed by an agent of the company; and 3) the company continued to ask for medical records that were far more clinical than required. Not recommended unless you are willing to put up with confusion and processing delays.

I joined this insurance for my dog in March. I did it from a recommendation based on my employer's benefits they offer. I left a company called Healthy Paws and I couldn’t be more sorry that I did. Spot's premiums are higher than anybody else, but when I joined, it appeared worth it. I have since tried four different claims all of which were not only denied, but didn’t even go towards the deductible. Healthy Paws paid all of these without question. The last claim even had a new injury, illness, and medications needed and for some reason, they choose not to even cover that even though I picked a premium policy. I would recommend going to Healthy Paws to anybody that is considering.

Spot covered some large bills right away and their customer service was there to answer questions that I had. So lucky!
