How Spot Pet Insurance works

Spot Pet Insurance helps cover the cost of expensive vet bills when your pets are hurt or sick.

It works a lot like human health insurance regarding deductibles, premiums and preexisting conditions. There is also a 14-day waiting period between the day you purchase the coverage and when your pet begins coverage.

Insurance is one of those things that you hope you never have to use but are always thankful for when you do. Here’s how it works if your pet gets hurt or sick:

  1. Take your pet to the licensed vet of your choice.
  2. Get treatment and pay the bill.
  3. Submit your claim on the Spot Pet Insurance website by mail, phone, or fax.
  4. Receive reimbursement for your expenses based on your coverage plan.

Spot also gives you access to a 24/7 vet helpline by VetAccess that you can use for any questions related to your pet's health.

What does Spot Pet Insurance cover?

Spot Pet Insurance plans cover a range of illnesses and conditions that your cat or dog may experience in their lifetime. The company offers multiple coverage options, including:

Accident-only coverage
The accident-only policy does not cover any expenses related to illness. Accident-only coverage covers unexpected treatments your pet may need as a result of an accident, including:
  • Alternative therapy
  • End-of-life expenses
  • IV fluids and medications
  • Veterinary treatment and medical supplies
  • MRIs
  • Tooth extractions
  • Poison control consultations
  • Prescription medicine and supplements
  • Surgery and hospitalization
  • Stem cell therapy
Accident and illness coverage
Spot Pet Insurance’s accident and illness coverage, also called Spot-On Coverage, is a more comprehensive option that covers everything on the accident-only plan plus expenses related to the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Spot-On Coverage also covers the cost of microchipping your pet. This plan does not include expenses like breeding and pregnancy costs, boarding, grooming or other elective or cosmetic services.
Coverage exclusions
Before choosing an insurance plan for your pet, it’s crucial to understand what’s not covered so there aren’t any misunderstandings. Some of the most common coverage exclusions include:
  • Preexisting conditions
  • Aesthetic dental services
  • Conditions occurring within the policy waiting period
  • Grooming and nonmedical supplies
  • Non-FDA treatment or supplements
  • Pet diets
  • Daycare or boarding

How much does Spot Pet Insurance cost?

The monthly cost of Spot Pet Insurance depends on your location and the coverage options you select. You can get a free Spot Pet Insurance quote on its website and customize your deductibles, premiums and reimbursement percentages. The premium is based on your pet's age, breed and where your pet lives.

Using the website’s free quote tool, we found that accident and illness coverage with 80% reimbursement and a $5,000 annual limit for a 2-year-old Cairn Terrier mix ranged from around $20 to $40 each month, depending on the deductible. Accident-only coverage with the same reimbursement and annual limit ranged from $15 to $20 a month.

Spot offers a 30-day money-back guarantee as long as you have made no claims on the policy. The guarantee is not available in New York.

I purchased Spot Insurance after a ton of research when we got our miniature dachshund. Knowing they can have potential back problems I wanted to make sure we could afford to get him the care needed. When the day came that our baby lost the use of his back leg's, we had one less thing to worry about knowing we had the safety net. When his surgery and local vet visits were complete 10k later. I was nervous on how the claim process would go.. I was pleased at how easy it was to file the claim in the application, which was a Tuesday, by Friday my claim was processed!!! Since I had entered my bank information the $ was in my account by Monday 🤯. I can’t say enough how grateful we are that in a horrible situation the $ part of getting our baby the treatment needed was NOT any part of that. We believe without that surgery he would not be walking today and living a normal life. ❤️🐾

I got Spot when I adopted an 11 yr old dog that had a history of severe neglect. The neglect my dog, Tito, endured affected every body system and took him almost a year to recover from. Knowing that Tito might have medical issues in the future, due to his history, I went with Spot after I read this on their website (for CA resident), “Pre-existing conditions are not covered by our plans. However, If your pet’s pre-existing condition is curable and has been cured and free from treatment and symptoms for a period of 180 days it is a new occurrence.”

I thought this was very important because the insurance I have for my other dog, Toby, is still holding certain things as “pre existing conditions,” even though they are not ongoing conditions/illnesses at all. At the time of adoption and still, Tito has been healthy with only 2 visits to the vet so far. I’m grateful, but I know I’m prepared for the future if his health takes a turn for the worst. Customer service on the phone and through the app for claims/estimate processing has been awesome. The insurance Toby has seems to fight every claim, is slow to respond, and doesn’t collect medical records from the vet (even though their website says they will). Spot insurance is better in all of those ways. After 1 year with Spot, I’ve decided to switch Toby over to it as well. I recommend Spot to my family and friends.

I researched a lot of pet insurance options, and Spot seemed to offer the most at a reasonable price! Not only that, but it lets you customize each policy for each pet, and they could be changed at any time and as many times as you feel necessary. It is so easy to file a claim and the turnaround to receive reimbursement is fairly quick. With three dogs and a cat, having Spot insurance has been a lifesaver on my wallet! I would definitely recommend Spot insurance to anyone who is looking for a reasonably priced personalized insurance!

Switched to Spot last year as there was an employer discount from my job and I was able to cover all 4 of my pets for about the same as what I was paying for 2 on my previous insurance. 2 months after switching my dog was diagnosed with Cushings disease and cost me over 3k in 1 year in testing and prescriptions. I submitted all my receipts in the app recently and I was reimbursed about 1900 within about 7 days direct to my bank account. I missed out on about 400 of reimbursement because there is a 270 day cutoff for submitting so be careful to submit your receipts before that deadline. Anyway, no hassles. They reaches out to my vet for medical records and about 3-4 days later I received my reimbursement.

I paid for top-tier coverage (very low deductible, 90% coverage, preventative plan) and the expeditious reimbursement for my puppy’s first vet visit two days after I started the plan is a welcome sign of how this company operates. While the coverage allowance is lower than my vet prices on almost everything, it has more than paid for itself this first month - and with microchipping and spaying coming in the next few months I’m sure it will pay for itself during this first year. I did not have insurance for my last dog, and she developed several extremely expensive conditions that made my finances troublesome for the second half of her life. The peace of mind this plan offers is worth it even if I wasn’t already seeing costs being covered!

Filed a WELLNESS CLAIM WHICH IS COVERED, with the requested paperwork and they denied it. I paid my first month premium and they keep denying the claim even though I have sent the paperwork 19 TIMES! Sent paperwork again, they denied it again saying they could not read it. I sent the email to people I knew and they said they could read the emails just fine. This is an attempt to deny. I have had to call over 25 times in a week and they are still denying. The invoice attached, Spot says they can't read it. Bullcrap. SPOT PET INSURANCE IS A SCAM! DO NOT USE!

Stay away. I was a member for over an year paying $50 per month. My dog is 4 years old and very healthy overall. We feed him high quality fresh food and he is lean weight. Very active dog. Probably an ideal customer for any health insurance company for years to come. Guess what. To my surprise I filed a first claim for outer ear infection for $77 as he developed an external ear infection and they rejected it. Saying that one of the records from vet from 2023(!) indicated allergies. And these guys connected allergies to ear infection and called it pre-existing condition!! Pre-existing condition for allergy!! Which dog does not have one.

I can understand a more severe underlying condition that may lead to cancer or other critical diseases that maybe justified but allergy??? Jeez. If they can deny a $77 claim calling allergy as a pre-existing condition, I am going to run away real fast from them. What a scam. And they have incompetent people running their claims department who have no clue how to grow their business and what is considered acceptable risk.

This pet insurance company has deliberately misleading language in their online sign up process relating to waiting periods. They state that you may not file claims for any condition treated during the waiting period. This would mean claims would be denied if they took place during this period. I found out today that in reality any condition DISCOVERED during the waiting period will not only not be covered for the visit, but will also be logged a pre-existing condition for future denials, even though it occurred after the start of the plan. Now with a 180 day term for a consideration of not being pre-existing, our dog has a monthly preventative prescription that will NEVER be covered because Spot relates to that keyword in her diagnosis. Furthermore I am now permanently stuck paying out of pocket with no insurance coverage since at this point these are now all 'pre-existing'. Absolutely heartless scam artists.

Spot charges are excessive compared to the number of claims denied. I have submitted claims that was rejected because my VET said one thing and Spot determine something different. Imagine taking your dog to the VET and he provide diagnoses and Spot without seeing your dog change the diagnoses. Absolutely insane.
