I have had 2 black labs for appx. 5 years and have always fed them Pedigree canned and dry mixed together. We usually buy the 52 lb. bag, sometimes the 20 lb. bag. On Mon night Sept. 29th, I noticed the water bowl was empty and I thought I had forgotten to fill it. Turns out my male lab was drinking it like never before. He wouldn't eat his food. My son got him to eat a can of Pedigree by hand feeding him. His behavior still seemed ok until Tuesday afternoon. He seemed a little tired. I hand feed him some boiled chicken breast which he threw up. Wed am. took him to the Vet who did blood work, took x-rays and hydrated him. Took him home Wed. afternoon. He was trying to act normal but I could tell he just was not feeling good. I took him back the next morning and the vet did some more testing and an ultrasound, hydrated him all day long. My dog died later that day. His liver was not working and his bilirubin was off the chart.
After appx. 2,000.00 dollars all we have now is his ashes. My family cried for a week, and we miss him dearly. His name was Blackjack, and he was a great friend and special part of our family. My female lab has not been the same since his death. I thought it was just that she missed him, which I am sure she does, but I am taking her to the vet to have her checked out. She does not have the energy and does not eat but only half the food I put out for her. Since my neighbor told me about the problem with Pedigree yesterday afternoon and I just read all these concerns and complaints and the sudden death of Blackjack along with my female dog not feeling good. You can bet that she will no longer be eating Pedigree dog food.

I bought pedigree dog food that was contaminated with salmonella and my dog was very ILL. After several trips to the vet, she is better now that I have spent hundreds of dollars and am not feeding her pedigree dog food anymore.

My dog eats PedigreeSmall Crunchy Bites. She began to vomit 9/21/08. We took her to the vet 9/22/08 a.m. They took blood, gave her an antiboitic shot and said she was very ill. The next few days she still vomitted, had diarrhea, fever, refused to eat and was lethargic.
Took her back to the vet 9/25/08 a.m. and they took blood again and her kidneys were not doing well and they began giving her an IV to hydrate her. We did this twice a day, 9/25, 9/26, 9/27/08 and she died 9/28 at about 1:51 a.m. after an suffering.
Our dog died; our family is devistated and we have a $616.23 vet bill and a $149.00 crematorium bill.

We used to purchase smaller bag Pedigree dog food from Walmart and other stores. Later we found this 52-lb bag Pedigree dog from Costco was cheaper, so we bought it this year (forgot which month). On July 13, my American Eskimo dog (named Snowy) experienced the first seizure. We sent him right to ER in 10 minutes. He had another seizure in the ER. The vet tech sent him right away for treatments The vet suspected Snowy ate something poison, but we didn't believe that. She then put him on some medications after the X-ray and blood work results came out. Snowy was able to go home on July 16 with some medications and prescription dog food. It cost us $1200+ to bring him back to normal.
When his prescription dog food was about to be finished, we gradually mixed some Pedigree dog food with it. About two weeks after we did this, Snowy experienced another cluster of seizures started September 12 afternoon to September 14 morning. We can't afford to take him back to his vet, so we left him home and thought he may die. Fortunately, he stopped seizure. However, he didn't recognize his name, he didn't bark, and didn't understand simple commands like come, sit, go, and shake hand. He seemed to be scared. About a week later, he gradually returned to normal, but still weak at night.
Then, I saw this Mars pet food recall news, and found out the #52 bag that we bought from Costco was recalled. I was so shocked! I then took Snowy to the vet who then gave Snowy the same medication and prescription dog food to go home. Poor Snowy may have to be on prescription dog food for life. I strongly believe this Pedigree dog food is the root cause for Snowy's seizures.
It cost us about $1200 for July's treatment for Snowy. On September, it cost us about $120 for office visit, medication, and prescription dog food.

I received a letter this past weekend from the Mars pet food company indicating that I had bought a 52 # bag of Pedigree dog food from the BJ wholesale company. They stated that the product might be contaminated with salmonella. I purchased the bag in about April of 2008.
In May, my Siberian husky began having bloody stools and vomited blood. The vet assumed that she had some sort of cancer. She died in June. The information about salmonella six months earlier might have saved her life.

My dog was euthanized on August 17th. I had bought a new 52# bag of Pedigree about a week prior. He was so sick and was put on no food for 24 hrs then bland diet. On day 2 i noticed decreased appetite in my other 3 dogs (honestly we thought It was because the stress in the house of one being so ill and my dogs being so close) and the fact that the smell of chicken and rice were in the air! On early day 3 I now know my other dogs had decreased activity, appetite, refusal to eat any of the food.
I changed the food immediately. I saved the bag of Pedigree just in case. It has taken about 3 weeks for my dogs to be right again. Several friends (different homes) also in this time frame noticed there dogs refusing to eat the food (come to find out they were not listed as recalled bags) but still refused to eat it. I told them STOP giving it to them. It wasent until the recall came out in September where I really realized the food could have killed my dog.
I also lost a cat in June (who snuck dog food from the bowl often) an 8 year old indoor cat suddenly died. So now everything is suspicious. My dog was also 8. I called the FDA, the told me there had been no reports of deaths as of yet (CALL!) I reported mineand have been trying go get in touch with pedigree since the announcement! I call and get nothing I email I get nothing and this whole thing seems to have just faded away so few people know of the recall.
How many have died and people dont know it COULD have been the food. I have proof up to several months back I purchased recalled food. What if people dont know! Im tired of companies getting away with this. It needs to stop. At the very least a phone call was in order from Pedigree to me. To those of you who have lost your pets or are sick now I am so sorry this is happening.

We bought a 52 lb bag of pedigree a week ago & 3 days later my miniture dachsund became lathargic & had Black bloody diarea. She is 16 & we thought she just got sick, We decided to have her uthinized, thinking that her old age was the problem. The very next day we got a letter from Mars petcare on the pedigree recall. I am sick with grief & now have to get bloodwork done on my husband, son, myself, & my other dog who has been eating the same food.
If I had got the letter one day earlier I may have been able to keep my dog alive, now shes gone and there is nothing I can do to have her back home where she is loved like a member of our family. I just lost my mother to cancer & now my dog is gone, We are very heartbroken & feel so helpless.

We have taken him to the doctor...he has run blood test & advised us that the seizures were not system or metabolic based...our vet has suggested low levels of toxins can cause seizures...he has now advised us not to feed our dogs Pedigree any longer....
We were also informed this morning that some of the pet stores have been recalling your products....one being Pet's Mart....where we were buying Pedigree....but Pedigree website doesn't mention that recall at all...but Pet's Marts website does
This scares us....the silence scares us....after years of using Pedigree, we will no longer continue to buy your product. We belong to 3 dog organizations, who also informed us that something is amiss with Pedigree products in the last 4 months with their dogs too.

Our pet died of tainted food from Pedigree, they said they closed that PA plant and no further responsibility, but so many others are coming forward to say their pet died also from Pedigree food, is there anyone going to advocate for us and our lost pets.. The vet bills were over $3000.00 dollars..
We had to move, emotional stress from losing our family member, put on medication for depression for my husband, he was distraught and saught a doc for help..

Recall was announced Sat 13 Sept 08 for the dog food we feed our dogs. When I tried to reach spokesperson w/toll free number no one answered. There was no web site for consumers either. I can not match the codes since we place our food in galvanize cans and don't keep the bags. We have large dogs so we purchase 20lb bags and puppy food in 20 lb bags. Unable to return food or contact anyone we had to go out a repurchase dog food. Very poor public relations department especially considering the re-call.

We opened a new bag of Pedigree Dog Food Small Crunchy Bites and fed it to our German Shorthair Pointer. Within a few days he stopped eating. We took him to the vet and blood work was done he was prescribed anitbiotics and a blan diet. The next day we admitted him to the vet he was given intvenious anitbiodics and fluids. On the third day we returned to the vet with our beautiful dog lathargic vomiting bile and uncontrolable dietera. Blood work was done again and his kidneys and liver were shutting down and he was in reanal failure. He was gone that day.
Our family pet died within a few days of opening this dog food. The vet has preformed an autopsy and has sent tissue samples to an independant lab. We dug his grave and are ready to put him at rest but are unsure if more lab work might be required. How could our beautiful dog be healthy, happy and within 7 days dead. We still have the left over dog food and the original bag. Isn't this how a recall starts? Isolated (the say) and then it grows into a massive recall.

I buy Pedigree traditional ground dinner for my dogs, Chicken and Rice. Distibuted by Materfoods USA. I have bought this for 4yrs. now and no problems.I notice last time I went and purchased some cans of this dog food, the can was differnt in looks. I didn't think much of that until I gave this to my germanshepards and they started getting uncontrollalbe runs! I have had to clean up contantly after them. I started to trace what is differnt and I went to the cans and saw they also changed the ingredients and now Mars is on the can without Masterfoods USA.
I don't know what they are using in by products but it made my dogs sick. I have them on home cooked dog food now. I didn't know Nutro had problems with Mars until i came on the internet to see what I could give my dogs now. I won't buy that again.
Sick dogs. It took 3wks to get them straighten out again.

We had a large dog get ill and we took her to a veternarian as well as UCD Small Animal Hos. They suspected poisoning but we had no poison she could have gotten into. She was put down because of it and another of our dogs fell ill the following week and died. We suspect now that it was the Pedigree dog food we had purchased from Costco. I have returned 3 50/52 lb. bags of dog food with the date Best before 7/2009. Another bag we had said best before 10/2008. We usually buy several bags at a time.
The first dog was large and the total vet bills amounted between $800 and $900. The other small dog became ill and died.

We have fed our 3 dogs Pedidgree Complete Nutrition small crucnhy bites dog food for quite some time. I have personally fed my dogs Pedigree on and off for about 20 years. Recently, we bought a 20 lb bag of this food and shortly after opening it and feeding it to our dogs, (about 24 hours) our dogs started having diahrrea.
We took the dogs off dog food and fed them boiled chicken and rice for a couple days, they got better. We put them back on the dog food and again within 24 hours, all 3 dogs had diarrhea. We went throught this 3 or 4 times in two weeks, then got on the internet to check the dog food. We found that there was a small recall pertaining to southern California and Nevada. I 100% believe that my dogs had a problem from this food. Their symptoms were exactly as described in the info on Mars Brand pet foods web site, and once taken off the food, they got better.
I contacted Mars Brand, they were very helpful, took all of my information, but did tell me this pertained only to CA and NV. I told them they just needed to be aware of potential problems elsewhere.
I am not seeking any damages, just that this company be aware of potentially having a wider spread problem than they think, or thought. They need to be responsible and make a nationwide announcement of the possibility.

My 40 lb bag of dog food had black little ugly worms in it. It was disgusting and I need to know if one of my 3 dogs ate one of the things it may harm them or are they growing in their stomachs? UGH! I did not notice them until I had fed them about 2/3 or so of the bag so I don't know how long they were in there.
other than being out 1/3 bag of dog food my greatest concern is are they growing in my dogs tummies?

I have two akc rottweiler puppies that I feed pedigree kibble.
My dogs vomited their food for 10 days, I changed their diet and the vomiting stopped but I don't know if if there is damage done from the pedigree dog food

I have ALWAYS fed all my dogs Pedigree dog food. A year BEFORE the scandal, she got sick, and had a seizure. I rushed her off to the vet, the seizure was gone, and it happened again a month later. The vet did blood work, and found that her gall bladder, thyroid and kidneys were damaged. She is getting thyroid medication, and aspirin for her pain. (She also developed arthritis in her right shoulder) Her kidneys feel like solid rock. I did my research, because I had the thought, High fat causes gall bladder disease. I don't FEED her high fat! I went on line, and looked up dog food makers and rendering plants. I did a LOT of research. The whole topic became more and more disgusting. I changed her to a high-quality dog food. I became way more careful in what I fed her. Anything that had animal byproducts' I avoided like the plague.
I did send you info before; but not until today did I read that Pedigree dog food was definitely involved. I am SO angry at them! And the 'rendering' industry brags that they render a service and keep all those animal carcasses out of landfills. I doubt that I can prove anything to the standard needed to sue Pedigree. But you can bet your backside I will NEVER buy from them again, and further, I will defame their name at every opportunity!
My dog is still alive. But I do know what those rock-hard kidneys mean. When she no longer wants to go on, I will hold her in my arms as the vet gently releases her from pain. And I WON'T leave her body behind! What's even worse? She is not only my beloved pet and friend, she is my service dog!

I had 2 dogs that had to be put down in April and in May of this year. I was feeding them pedigree dry and some can.my 4 year old dog was in renal failure and the other had similar symptoms vomiting...diarreha...lethargy. both dogs were put to sleep. IS THIS FOOD CONTAMINATED? I just took 2 other dogs to the vet. new pups...vomiting. now I just use the pedigree dry....

I had to euthanize my 4 year old Karelian Bear dog due to renal failure..then had to put down our other dog within 4 weeks of the first..I did not hear anything about pedigree????????

I am concerned about pedigree canned dog foods as the last several cans seem to have made my dogs sick. They began throwing up, eating large amounts of grass, having the runs, etc. I have been using Pedigree mixed with Iams kibble since the pet food fiasco last year. I bought some canned food from the vet at $1 per can and the problems stopped. So now it looks like the pedigree canned food is bad news. I guess I will feed them a little hamburger instead. Cheaper anyway.

My dog had a seizure, and by the time I could get her to the vet, it had stopped. Eight months later, and another seizure. I have fed all of my dogs NOTHING but Pedigree for years. For a time, she was on seizure medication, then I ran out and couldn't afford more, and she has had no more seizures. But her gall bladder and thyroid are damaged.
It was about $300 for vet visits, blood work, and changing her food. I now feed her a more expensive food, and she is doing better. So, more cost for dog food. I was also revolted, after doing considerable looking online, to learn that dog food manufacturer's use euthanized dog and cat carcasses, plus road kill, slaughterhouse leavings, cattle heads, guts and udders, downer cattle who are too sick for human consumption. My research was later backed up by other sources. I cannot be involved in legal matters, as I am a lady, 70-years-old and disabled, and I am doing all that I can to keep my SERVICE DOG healthy! My life depends on her. When she was so terribly sick, I was scared most of the time that I would have an attack, and she would be too sick to warn me. And it was hard for me to give her all the extra care. But never mind that part; she is also my friend and companion, and I love her. Losing her to a massive consumer fraud, and horrible breach of trust, would utterly destroy me.

Fed my small poodle pedigree. Her eyes bacame really glazed, she couldn't stand to her feet, had 2 seizures and was drinking water uncontrollably. I gave her regular cooked vegetables and she got much better, back to normal for 4 days. Then I put her back on pedigree and found my dog dead the next morning.

My dog became sick and lethargic on March 30, 2007. Although the Pedigree Chicken & Rice Dinner in Meaty Juices Lean Variety was not listed on the dog food recall, we stopped feeding it to him as a precaution. He was better within 48 hours. On April 1, 2007 we started feeding him the same food and on April 2, he became sick again with diarrhea and lethargy. He is going to the vet today. Wheat gluten is listed on the ingredient list. Has anyone else had any problem with this dogfood?

This concerns various dog foods. My dog was ill before the big recall. She had a seizure about a year ago. Eight months later, a second seizure, and the vet put her on medication. She had epilepsy, gall bladder problems, and her thyroid. They are watching her gall bladder, and she is on seizure medication for the rest of her life. She is my service dog, and very important to me, a disabled person. I wondered however, why a healthy 6-year old dog would suddenly have gall bladder problems, indicating a fatty diet. I was then giving her a Pedigree dog food, based on the vet's saying it was a decent source. I changed her to IAMS, a bit more expensive, and so far, she seems to be OK. But, I checked on line, wondering why she became ill after 6 years. Epilepsy usually hits YOUNG people and dogs.
I was appalled at what I found: I looked up 'DOG FOOD MANUFACTURERS'
and RENDERING PLANTS. That's when I got sickened: They feed our dogs and cats, EUTHANIZED DOGS AND CATS! If a dog food says Meat Byproducts it contains that! They also render road kill, the heads,horns and all, from cattle slaughter, as well as chicken slaughter - beaks, heads, feet. The dogs and cats who were euthanized still have the stuff used to kill them in their systems. They also still have whatever is in their digestive systems!
The rendering plants say they provide a service -making sure these leavings do not end up in landfills. I will be damned if ANYBODY is going to turn my dog into a cannibal!

I will be happy to send the article if you wish. As for how the poison got into the dog food? Yes, the pesticide - but is anyone aware that Chinese people put NIGHT SOIL into their crops?

I don't want ANY food source from china entering our food chain! Do you know how MAD COW got into the food chain? A sheep farmer in England was orderd to kill his entire flock of sheep. They had scrapie. To save money, the sheep were GROUND UP AND PUT INTO CATTLE FEED! It gave the cattle Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis, The human form is CJD: Creutzfeld-Jakov
Disease! ONE, man, reluctant to lose money, killed nearly an entire industry, and a number of humans who died horribly. We need to get our food sources, for animals and humans, in order! NOW. And I will never again buy any dog food that says animal byproducts. Wanna read my article?
For now, my dog seems to be OK. She is not showing any of the signs of the bad dog food. I still am giving her the medication for her epilepsy and thyroid problems.
