I left the care of Teddy Bear, my 15-yr-old Yorkie with my son while my husband and I were on a 2-week vacation in Alaska. He'd been having sporadic staring seizures and I'd been seeing personality changes in him for several months which I contributed to his age. He was constantly begging for snack. But, when we left, he was having no health concerns. Three days before we were to come home, my son called and said Teddy was staring, had very bad diarrhea, and was not eating or drinking. It being late Friday and our vet being out of town, he wasn't able to get him medical care until early Sunday morning. I received a call from the vet. He was severely dehydrated and wouldn't be able to diagnose until he was given an IV, etc. He was in terrible condition. I okayed him to put him to sleep. I wanted to end his suffering.
As soon as my husband and I got home, we buried him. I am so heartbroken. He was my constant companion for 15 years. He loved me. I was researching his symptoms and found this website. I've always trusted Pedigree dog products. That was his dog food and snacks and I used their Breathbusters to help his breath. I'm not a vet. but... makes me wonder. I'll definitely tell my family (they have several dogs) not to take the chance.

I just discovered worms (larvae) in our pedigree dog food. I was totally disgusted to find this in our dogs food and being unsure if he had eaten any. He was prescribed a dewormer. Now we have to switch brand as I will not be feeding him this brand ever again. The prescription cost me $73 as well as having to throw out the remaining food and purchase more. I was told by the vet to watch our dog over the next couple of days for any changes in him such as vomiting or diarrhea. I am so upset and disappointed with this and I truly believe that the dog food was infested from the factory. I do not have the original packaging as I keep the food in a air tight container and not in the bag.

I lost 2 dogs over a couple years both from cancer tumors in the neck area, removing them and coming back. Thinking it odd that they were both passed of thing in same area I started thinking what did they both have through their life that could of caused tumors. The only thing was water and pedigree. Talking to my sis she said same thing. She lost her two dogs to the same type of cancer.. both raising our dogs on pedigree.. Reading up on this there has been many complaints and no recall.

I have been feeding my Shih Tzu Pedigree Jumbones. He collapsed on the floor, I ran him to the emergency vet and had to have him put to sleep. When I looked at the ingredients weeks later, I noticed ingredient propylene glycol and did some research on it. I found out it was toxic and the symptoms before he died and his behavior for years before made me realize that it was this propylene glycol that killed him. He had liver failure.

We had a new Golden Retriever puppy and at the beginning of July I bought a new bag of Pedigree Puppy food. One morning I woke up to find our puppy very lethargic and vomiting. Before this, she was very active and healthy. I took her to the vet and on the way she had several seizures. Her blood glucose was very low. A parvo test was run as well as fecal tests and they came back negative. The doctor said it was either a liver shunt or a toxin. We had to have her transferred to a larger hospital that could do more testing. All together five veterinarians examined her and I was told that it was not a liver shunt, that it was a toxin and that the level was so high that it would not even register on the machine and my veterinarian told me that in 25 years she had not seen a level that high. Unfortunately, she passed away. We were very protective of our puppy. She only went in the yard to go potty and was always supervised and while in the house she was in a pen. Since our puppy died, we have went over the yard and have found nothing that could have harmed her. My veterinarian thinks it was the food.

I purchased a 15.9lb bag of pedigree dog food from Rural King store in Spring Hill Fl. The bar code was 2310029161 and the expiration date was 03 21 15. I stored it in its original packaging in a large container and used it for 3 days. I then noticed worms and bugs in the container. Upon examining the food in its original packaging I found worms and small bugs. I have since thrown out the remainder of the dog food.
I am very upset that this happened and I'm sure your company will be upset too. Hopefully having the bar code and expiration date will help you check this out. I would hate to think that other pet lovers would be purchasing and feeding contaminated food to their pets.

For over 10 years, I have been feeding my dogs Pedigree dry and once a week a can. I have used the chicken brand for the past 5 years due to stomach issues with beef. I had just purchased a new LARGE bag of dry at Walmart and was pleasantly surprised it was only $19.96. Now... we have a HUGE problem. First my 10-year-old Golden became ill. I came home to an absolute mess. This dog has not had an accident since she was a pup and there was bloody diarrhea in the grandest amount. I was mortified. Also, she had vomited yellow foam everywhere. I took her outdoors only to find her straining and then pure blood from her rectum.
I took her to the vet. We are waiting on blood work to come back tomorrow and stool shows no parasites. She also has been panting hard and drooling. NOW, at 4 AM, I am up from my Dachshund vomiting in her cage and running through my house with the same thing. BLOODY DIARRHEA! Coincidence? I think NOT! I am furious right now. The Pedigree company obviously has cut corners to sell a product for less money. And they are making our loved pets sick and possibly dying. This product needs to be pulled NOW!!!!! I will be taking my Dachshund to the vet in the AM... and NEVER feeding Pedigree again. They will hear from me in a few hours!

I bought nine 22-oz Pedigree canned dog food on July 22nd, 2014 at Walmart. My mother bought me the 13-oz 12-pack of Pedigree dog food on August 5th, 2014. I had been feeding my Basset Hound named "Princess" the 22-oz cans until the 5th of August. I had already fed "Princess" 6 cans of the 22-oz cans. The first can of this food she ate just fine. The next can she ate just fine as well as the third can. Then she began experiencing flu-like symptoms. Her stool became black and sticky and tar like. She then became hesitant about eating the canned food when it came to the 4th can of Pedigree 22-oz dog food. Her condition worsened and she only would eat half of the 5th can. So I supplemented her with a different flavor in a 13-oz can from the 12-pack of Pedigree canned dog food. Her symptoms became worse, and she refused to eat the food.
I didn't understand why she would not eat it. By the 6th and 7th cans and 1 more 13-oz can, I only realized the food was making her sick because I found out my other Basset Hound named "Jessica" began sneaking into her kennel to steal the 6th, 7th, and 2nd can of 13-oz dog food I intended to feed "Princess". Jessica is now sick and experiencing the same symptoms that "Princess" had experienced. Jessica will not eat anything now, and I may have to take her to the vet if her condition worsens. Princess on the other hand is recovering slowly. I had stopped feeding her "Pedigree canned dog food" and is eating hot dogs, bread, Old Roy milk bones, and I am trying to get her back to dry dog food slowly with a different brand.

For years me and my family have used Pedigree for any dog we have had. I noticed just this last week that the bag of dry food me and my husband had gotten for our huskys was getting moldy white and black on what food was left in the bottom of the bag. Yes our dogs are very active and have an average structure to them but since we got this bag around may or June, our youngest (2years old) has been getting skinnier than normal. I'm not sure what Pedigree has done to their dog food (wet or dry) but it's not making me want to buy another bag because I don't want my dogs end up sick or worse from a manufacture mess up.

I recently purchased pedigree dog food from Walmart for my Chihuahua whose name is cha chi. The formula was for joint health. Shortly after eating the canned dog food, he became very ill and started to have seizures. Cha Chi experienced one seizure after another. It was absolutely horrific to see this beautiful little baby suffer. He was foaming at the mouth, flopping all over the floor, long strands of mucus and foam were coming out of his mouth. He had 15 seizures one after another. He never had a seizure before eating the pedigree dog food. I was shocked to learn after going online that many people were reporting their pets having seizures after eating this dog food. Why isn't there a recall on this garbage. From what I understand, many little lives have been snuffed out.. Yes, I am very hurt and angry.. I thought these people cared about the health of our little pets who are more like family members. What can be done about this?

They never asked the status of my dogs until I asked them "What about my dogs?" I would like to take them to vet but I do not have the money to do it. You do not even have to send "me" the money. You can send it to the vet office in my city, but they said they do not work like that. I have been feeding my lab/pitbull mix canned Pedigree for many years, but in the last month and a half she has had on and off diarrhea (On when she ate canned Pedigree and off when she ate chicken and rice), and I'm convinced it's the food. When it first happened I figured she just had an upset stomach, skipped one of her meals and then started feeding her chicken and rice for a few days. Her stool firmed up after eating the chicken and rice, so I slowly started feeding her the canned Pedigree....then after 3 or 4 days the diarrhea returns. I took her to the vet and had her blood, urine, and stool tested, everything came back normal. I have repeated this cycle 5 times now. It is definitely the food. I will never buy this garbage again!!

My dog woke me up around 11PM. He had been eating his Pedigree canned dog food. He started vomiting up foamy stuff, panting, gulping and whining and drinking copious amounts of water and looking for things to eat to make him throw up. They tested him at the ER that night and did x-rays to rule out obstruction. They could find nothing wrong with him. He came home and sat and drooled the whole day the next day. I gave him a spoonful of the Pedigree which he kept down. Then another spoonful at dinner. He was still drooling and lethargic. The next day he looked almost normal. I fed him this evening the normal amount for dinner and within a half an hour he was having the same symptoms. I am thinking this is the food. He has been eating this food for 1 and a half years and been fine. So this is surprising.

This just happened this past week and my beloved Ollie died on 6/30. Unfortunately, I have been unemployed and cannot afford a veterinarian. Ollie became very ill on Wed., 6/25, and vomited frothy phlegm all over the place. I also saw where he had vomited dog food. I was told to make certain that he had plenty of water because he probably had an irritated stomach. He drank on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday morning, I found him in the basement, lethargic. Brought him upstairs and helped him drink some water. He started sleeping a great deal which I figured was due to the fact that all the vomiting made him exhausted. This is a dog that is never ill and has eaten Pedigree for a long time.
The next morning, it appeared that he could not hear or see and I realized that I had waited too long which broke my heart. This dog was very well taken care of - always well fed, lots of exercise. I knew that he could not have been poisoned by a human, because he had not been out in the yard and I had on the leash at all times. He also had a twitching of his head and his jaws were clenched. It just killed me, but I didn't have the $100+ to take him to a vet. But I would be curious if anyone feels that maybe he got contaminated food. He also liked to eat dry cat food.

Been feeding my dog Pedigree little bites for the past several years with no issues. About the first week of June I went and purchased more food because I had ran out. Roughly about a week later, my dog started with loose stools and then diarrhea started along with some blood. Did the usual rice to bind a little then reintroduce the food little by little shortly after the symptoms started all over again. I thought maybe a little bug or something, kept a close eye on him, started feeding him rice again, and as soon as I introduced the food to him again, the symptoms start all over again. This went on for almost a month.
In the meantime, he was extremely inactive - would just lay around, wouldn't beg for cookies or anything which is extremely abnormal for him. I turned to the internet to see if other people are having the same issues. I was shocked to see that were a lot of other dog owners having the same issue. I switched his food and the next thing I knew the symptoms have stopped and he started being his old self again.

I have a Standard Poodle named Bentley and a small mixed breed named Biscuit. I fed them Pedigree twice a day for the past 2 years. About 3 months ago both of my dogs starting vomiting on a daily basis, sometimes throughout the day (I noticed that Biscuit was reluctant to eat her food and sometimes would just walk away). I know that 3 months sounds like a long time to allow such behavior to go on, but I also had started giving them pills to help their urine not kill my grass. I honestly thought it was the pills that were causing the sickness. I stopped the pills, but the vomiting continued and they began to have diarrhea. I stopped feeding them Pedigree two weeks ago and put them on rice for a week to calm their tummies. This helped almost immediately. I then decided to purchase Blue Buffalo Lamb and Brown Rice for them. They love it! And thankfully are no longer sick.

In May of 2011 my then 2-year-old yellow lab had his first of many seizures. At first they were every couple of months and progressed to a point of one seizure every week to 10 days. About six months after the onset of seizures the vet placed him on potassium bromide; however, the seizure frequency did not improve much. Ozzy still had seizures about twice a month. In 2014, in mid April, I read an article via Facebook about dog treats from China killing over 1000 dogs here in the USA. It was at this point I decided to try Ozzy on a different food as seizure activity was mentioned in the article. I went to Tractor Supply and purchased a 15 lb bag of Source natural dog food to see if he liked it. He did and still does.
My reason for writing this review is to hopefully inform others of our good news (...so far) and that is Ozzy has not had a single seizure since starting on the new food. Specifically, his last seizure was four days before starting on Source dog food. He's never gone this long seizure free, i.e. two months and counting, and I'm almost 100% certain the Pedigree dog food was causing his seizures. Plus, it's not just the seizure problem that has improved. He previous had droopy lower eyelids, which I thought was a natural feature. They were not. His overall look has improved to include his droopy eyes, his weight, his coat and, of course, the seizures have stopped.
I have little doubt that Pedigree dog food was causing Ozzy's seizures. Such a shame my dog suffered for three years because of that food. Technically my whole family suffered as it's a painful thing to watch happen to such an important part of the family. I wasn't able to take him swimming anymore for fear he'd have a seizure in the water. Drop a book on the floor and he'd have a seizure following being startled. It was awful! Lastly, Pedigree costs about 50 cents per pound. Source dog food costs about $1.50 per pound. That's a small price to pay considering the next step was going to be putting him on phenobarbital for the rest of his life.

I have been feeding both my dogs (1 medium size breed, 1 smaller size breed) Pedigree Longevity for a couple weeks. I decided to try Pedigree thinking it was a better quality food and many foods I have fed my dogs seem to make them urinate more, which increases the chances of accidents in the house. After about a week, the medium size dog seemed to have constipation at first and then the small size dog got diarrhea. I changed to regular chicken flavored Pedigree thinking it was the "Longevity" recipe that was the problem.
However after 2 days, the smaller dogs diarrhea is worse. Any pet with diarrhea is unpleasant, however what was the most disturbing to me was what I found when I shaved her winter coat off. She probably only weighs 15 pounds most of the year, however has hair like a sheepdog and looks much bigger than she is. This past weekend I shaved her and was extremely disturbed that her hip bones were sticking out, her ribs were defined and her head & neck seemed so small.
She had not acted like she felt bad, ate like a hound dog just as she always has, so there was no reason for me to know that she had lost so much weight. I fear that had I not shaved her when I did, she could have died. Medium size dog has lost a little weight, but I thought it was due to me not letting them eat at will due to her diarrhea. I will definitely be changing dog food and will be more likely to read reviews before buying. It saddens me that I thought I was doing something good for them and I wasn't.

The Vet checked her stool for any worms. They found nothing. He put her on Pancerazyme and Metronidazole. This did not help. I took her to another Vet and he checked her stools and complete blood work and check her over complete. He couldn't find anything wrong. He put her on 6 different meds. And nothing worked for her diarrhea. She is not feeling well at all. She just wants to lie down. The Vet wants her to be scoped, both ends. That will happen 6-4-14. So far this has cost me $1400.00. I don't know how much the scoping will cost.. DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG PEDIGREE DOG FOOD. I don't know why there is not a lawsuit against Pedigree.

We've been feeding our beagle and basset hound Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition Beef Flavor until the last I bought. They have discontinued the beef flavor and now sell the chicken flavor. My dogs loved the beef flavor and ate heartily. I began feeding them the new chicken flavor this week and they smell it and don't want to eat it. They aren't lethargic, just hungry. I've had to feed them table scraps until I get another brand.
I called the Mars Petcare Consumer Relations this morning and talked to "Aaron". He confirmed that they changed the flavor from beef to chicken and added some vegetables. He offered free coupons for treats and suggested I might take an unopened bag I have back to Target for a refund. I told him I didn't have the receipt, that I paid cash. He had me read the information off of the bag and assured me that it would be checked.

My dog's fur was falling out and looked terrible. She is a 16 year old mutt... some lab/beagle. I was constantly taking her to the vet for skin conditions. I started using Pedigree for skin and coat and now her coat is beautiful. She likes it better when I heat it up in the microwave about a minute. However she hates the Pedigree dry dog food and it gets moldy in her dish if she doesn't eat it right away so I don't give her the dry stuff anymore.

I found these reviews because I bought Pedigree dry food (can't remember the flavor, sorry) for my dog as it was a bit of a rough week financially and I couldn't afford the premium stuff I usually buy. The dog got horrid yellow diarrhea. Put him on plain chicken and rice for a couple of days and he was OK. As I wasn't sure what caused the runs, I mixed the Pedigree with some premium food, so the ratio was about 1/5 Pedigree. Again, diarrhea. The cost savings are not worth the damage this obviously does to a dog's health. What the hell is in this dog "food"??

I have already contacted the company via email and will be calling on Tuesday due to holiday weekend. Both dogs experienced severe diarrhea for 4 days culminating in bright bloody stools last night. After going to an emergency vet for a bill of $510, results were negative for parasites and blood work was normal. However, food borne pathogens were not tested. Both dogs are being carefully monitored and given fluids and high antibiotics. Other recent reports have shown the SAME symptoms and with some reporting sadly death of their dogs. I urge others to report to this site and contact Pedigree for an immediate recall.

I have been feeding my little dog Pedigree canned food for a good while now. Lately he has been getting sick on and off. He has been vomiting yellow bile. He had some mucus in his stool. He is very lethargic and is sleeping a lot. A week or so ago I had to take him to a vet emergency room late at night because for some reason he was in a lot of pain. They didn't find a reason which satisfied me that there was nothing serious. I fed him chicken and rice and he got better. When he went back to the pedigree he got sick again. It finally dawned on me that his sickness occurred when he went back to eating the pedigree. Actually, a good while ago he did have a couple seizures. He also had a bout of bloody diarrhea. Related? I don't know. But I do believe that there is something wrong with the pedigree, especially if others are experiencing the exact same problems. I won't ever give it to him again. I would like to get back my energetic, happy, hyperactive, play- crazy dog again.

For the last 5-6 months, we have been, I suppose you could say "forced" to purchase chicken flavored Pedigree dry food, as finding the beef flavored has obviously been discontinued without any kind of notice. I have fed my Rottweilers the beef brand for many years & never had any problems... until April 23rd, 2014 when Daisy threw up gold colored bile & was not acting right... We took her into the vet, only to be told that she had experienced a "Flipped Stomach"(Bloat) & was bleeding internally... We had no choice but to lay Daisy to rest. I started researching if there were any recalls & found this site... The reason for my complaint is that my other 2 dogs have been throwing up 'bile' as Daisy had... & are 'lethargic' in a lot of their regular behaviors... Thinking back, Daisy was not eating as she usually would & my other two 'babies' are acting in the same mannerism... Do my dogs know something that I don't? Did Daisy pass away an untimely death because I fed her this food????!!!! Beyond Angry.

I've been feeding Pedigree for years and thought it was good dog food (wrong). Eight days ago, my 14 Y/O 18-pound Dachshund mix had a bout of diarrhea - fluffy, mucus-filled diarrhea. Her being a dog who will eat the grossest stuff, I figured the problem would clear up on its own like usual. One day later (a week ago), she began vomiting after meals and then suffering from black, tarry stools which rapidly progressed to stools like used motor oil. Examination of the samples showed no parasites or foreign bodies. Per her vet's instructions, I withheld food for two days, made sure she was hydrated, and gradually introduced small meals of boiled chicken and white rice. She is better now, almost well. I did not connect her problem with the food. However, my other two dogs (a 7 Y/O 25-pound whippet-terrier mix and an 11 Y/O 10-pound Chihuahua mix) have been eating the Pedigree chicken and rice food all week and now have the same puffy, vile-smelling diarrhea filled with mucus which began the first dog's illness. Neither is prone to eating strange things. They don't test positive for any parasite or disease and have always been healthy. The ONLY common denominator is Pedigree canned chicken and rice food. My guess is that the formula has changed or the food is somehow contaminated.

I have a mixed yorkie/schnauzer that I have been feeding IAMs Natural dry food and also the Pedigree canned or pouch food for about 8 years. I basically would use the wet food to make him eat the dry food because it made it taste better. The dog developed seizures at about two years old and would get them every 2-3 months and the vet could not determine the reason for them. My dog is now almost 10 years old. His seizures have stopped for the past 10 months since stopping Pedigree.. The only thing I have done differently is to take him off of Pedigree and give him a higher quality wet food. He used to have the worst breath ever. His breath has gotten better and he has gotten more active.
I have two other dogs who have had the same diet. My 2nd dog who is also 10 years old now never had seizures. He did develop a heart murmur last year though. His heart murmur is about the same since stopping the Pedigree food, but he is a lot more active and seems younger since changing his food. My third dog is only 5. She prefers her kibbles ala carte so has never eaten much of the soft food. She seems fine so far.

On Sunday we ran out of food for our 4 1/2 yr old cockapoo, Katie. I had to work 5 pm to 1 am so I ran to Walgreens to get some more...I thought this would be faster, as I was pretty tired and figured I would run to the real grocery the following day but she needed something for the morning. Her regular food is Purina (in the pouches) but they didn't have that so I just grabbed two cans of Pedigree canned food at $.99 each.
On Monday I gave her the food and she loved it. She was fine all day. Tuesday I gave her the other can...she seemed ok but super gassy. Wednesday I woke up to horrid smelling mucousy poo. About an hour later she started puking, and then drooling. I had to pick my kids up from school so I put Katie in the kitchen with both gates up. I was gone for maybe 20 minutes and when I got home there was a large puddle of blood. It looked like she peed blood, but her bottom was soaked in red so I knew it was poo and it smelled soooo bad. Rancid. There was mucous in the stool, like it was more mucousy than liquid and there were these long pieces of mucous...maybe 3 inches long and a couple of cm wide. She looked and acted pitiful.
I cleaned her up a little and I let her out...she just wanted to lay under our holly bush in the shade. She's a barker and super anxious but when a stranger walked by her, literally 10 feet from her, she didn't move. She didn't make a sound. When my husband got home from work, she didn't even raise her head. Her tail was wagging though. She finally began drinking water around 5 pm and was still making dry heave sounds but no vomit came up.
It's been a few hours and no poo or puke. Called the vet, they said it's most likely due to bad food and the change of food. It's unlikely she caught anything because she's up to date on shots and is never outside except to potty and she's always on a leash. She's not around any other animals, so since we changed the food it fits with intestinal inflammation. She's being kept hydrated but I've kept food away. She seems to have perked up a lot, as she's walking around and even jumped on the couch. She's has terrible gas right now and is stinking up my bedroom but I don't mind tonight. I honestly thought she was dying. Depending on how our night goes and what tomorrow holds we will start trying to eat some rice and possibly baked chicken in the evening or go to the vet's office. What a mess. Sick doggy, stinky house, stained carpets... All because I bought cheap a** dog food. Ugh!!

We only bought it because it was a big bag of food for a fair price and I always thought this brand was a good brand. Well recently my 3-year-old Pit Bull got sick with extremely bad diarrhea. It was so bad that I would be awoken at night to him sleeping and not realizing he was letting his bowels go in his sleep. I was concerned but chalked it up to stress because we had just moved to a new home and I thought he was just getting used to it so I bought some Kaopectate and rice and fed him that for a few days and he improved. I started giving him this food again and his symptoms have returned. Only now he pants so bad and strains to use the bathroom and the smell is horrific. It doesn't seem to be affecting my other 2 dogs so I didn't think it was the food until reading these reviews. I just threw out the remainder of the bag and will never buy this food again. I suspect that he had bleeding in his upper intestine or stomach because his stools were so black. By Saturday, he was getting lethargic. I bought a large bag of the dry food for the small breed of dog. Gave it to my dachshund. He went into shock like he had a stroke. I wasn't sure what the cause was, thinking, well, he was just an older dog now. He was lethargic, didn't even stand up. I had to put him in front of the water bowl. I thought he was a goner. I fed him some different dog food recommended by a pet store that had pumpkin in it. He improved. So, I thought, hmm... the dog food is alright.... just that he is so old, he needs to just have moist food. He got back to normal.
Well, my larger dog ran out of his dry food and I gave him some of the small dog food. He went from Pedigree large dog formula to the small dog bag of Pedigree. He threw up, had diarrhea. It went on for two days and it literally ruined my carpeting in my new home. I have tried Dawn detergent, hot water, carpet spot remover. I will have to call a professional, and that will cost me $150 or more. There was so much red dye used in the food. Anyway, I dumped the bag in the garbage... another $20+ wasted. Thank God, both dogs are still alive. The wet food, all the cans I have opened lately, have more liquid than ever. I could drain the can and it would be about 1/2 to 2/3 of the chunky dog food we used to have plus all the fat swimming at the top. Pedigree used to be a pretty good brand. I'm done with it! No more.

After three days on new food, puppy became ill, would not eat food and was very lethargic, dehydrated, panting and looked ill. Took her to vet. They did comprehensive blood test and pancreatitis test.
She needed medication and an injection of fluid and vet also recommended she be admitted for three days for constant fluids and suggested other tests. Also vet suggested bland foods, potato, rice, bread. After a few days, she seemed a little better and we tried to resume Pedigree thinking she had some kind of stomach issue non-related to food. There was no real vomiting. She did throw up tiny bit of bread. Over the same time she was sick, our other Golden refused/stopped eating the Pedigree and this dog eats well, never has refused any dog food. My dogs have been eating Pedigree without incident for 2 years. When I found the extra large bag at Walmart for a lower price than what I paid anywhere else, I bought it. Well, the first clue should have been that it took 3 days for the dogs to eat a full bowl of food each. One dog has suddenly started to ingest non-Food objects and my other dog woke me up in serious distress on Saturday morning with what appeared to be hives. I gave her Benadryl, made sure there was nothing she was getting in. I found nothing at all; I thought maybe she just ate something out of the garbage. Her hives did not subside even with Benadryl but she still seemed better than when she woke me at 4 am on a Saturday.
On Sunday, I woke and she was still covered in hives. I gave her another dose of Benadryl. She did not want to eat so I added a can of wet food to her bowl. Both dogs seemed to be eating. She still had hives but was active. I could not find any source of the hives. I watched her like a hawk outside to make sure she is not getting into anything. Monday, she would not even take a piece of cheese or pepperoni. She was lethargic, refusing to eat and just looked sad. I called the vet and he had me bring her in right away. She actually had hives as round as a Coke can on her torso. He said not to feed her the food from the big bags ever. He said the food sits too long and can go bad. He gave her a steroid injection and an antihistamine. He said it can be one of 2 things, a reaction to a spider bite or something she is eating.
I had stumbled upon this site before the vet appt because I was looking to see if anyone else had issues with the Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition. She ate a can of wet Science Diet at the vet with no problem. I am done with this food and never feeding it to my dog again. All of her hives are gone. A few years later and I had a complete set of lab work done on the Golden, all of which was great. Said he was in wonderful shape for his age and 2 weeks later he succumbed to "pancreatitis" after 5 days on IV fluids. Changed foods just in case.
Fast forward a couple of years and my hubby bought more "on sale". Suddenly I am taking my male beagle to the hospital and 3 days and $1200 later his heart gave out. He drank a lot of water but didn't think much of it - he was hyper. Then there was a sudden paralysis progressing from his front legs to his entire body within 24 hours and while the true cause was never found they thought it might be a black widow bite. (Mind you, I still didn't know they were back on Pedigree.) This weekend (2 months later) my female beagle starts throwing up, can't even keep water down. I find out that she is on Pedigree and lost my cool. She is in the hospital, on IV and catheter for what they think is "pancreatitis" JUST like the golden retriever. Nothing remarkable here, no vomiting, no seizures, no diarrhea...
This evening on the way to the vet (due to panting and lethargy) she died. We are sad. Not sure if it's the dog food... But I have to consider that I really do think it is the dog food. I cannot be sure Pedigree caused my dog's health problems, but I will say that she has shown significant health improvement since we switched her to a different brand. We had her on Pedigree since 2000 when we first got her as a puppy. There were no problems until sometime during the year 2012 when she started vomiting bile 1-2 times daily. During the year 2013, we also noticed her stools were runny and green and her energy levels were noticeably lower. She barely ate and barely moved, and she began vomiting bile 5-10 times daily. We did a blood test and had her examined by the Vet, but found nothing. We assumed she would pass away soon.
Then during October of 2013, it occurred to me that maybe there was a recall on her food. I found that there was no official recall issued, but other pet owners on this forum had similar complaints - especially during the time period during our dog's illness. So we switched her to a more expensive brand in November of 2013 and soon afterwards her symptoms improved tremendously. She still vomits bile, but she is playful and energized again. Her coat and skin are healthier and she has a healthy appetite again. Seems like her health improvements definitely coincided with the change in food.

Now my dog is on medication to stop the seizures.

made. My poodle passed away this morning, 3-06-14. Like you said, we have stuck to the same dog food and just decided the past couple weeks to change their food. They seemed to like the Pedigree a lot.
struggling to get the rest out and he laid down and passed away. When I went to wrap him up for proper burial I saw that his tongue was very thick and it looked as if he died having a seizure. A friend of my husband said that he heard about Pedigree dog food causing dogs to die so I looked online to see what others were saying. If I would have seen these people's complaints and responses before now, then I would have NEVER bought this food for my dogs and my poodle would probably still be alive today.
I just threw away the rest of the Pedigree food that I had left so that my Dachshund will not be eating that kind ever again. Age may have something to do with it. My poodle was about 7 and my Dachshund isn't even a year old but I will not take any chances with my dog's life. I just hate my Poodle Milo had to die. For everyone that is having major troubles with this brand of dog food, take a look at the side of the bag where the ingredients are listed and nutritional facts. It clearly states that this brand of dog food is not an approved source of nutrients. I would never recommend this brand to any pet owner, if you love you dog like a child this is the worst thing you could feed them. The first ingredient isn't even meat. That there shows its a waste of money. You always want to read the ingredients and nutritional facts before buying your pets food. Always look for a brand where the first ingredient is a meat. Our loved pets need six basic food nutrients to be healthy and happy: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, and most importantly water. Puppies should be have 4-6 small meal portions for proper feeding to prevent bloating and obesity at a young age, and for adult dogs, they should have 2-3 meals per day to again prevent bloating and obesity...

About 2 weeks ago I purchased a 55-lb bag of Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition from Costco. We don't normally feed our dogs the dry Pedigree, but on occasion will use the canned food. We woke up three days ago to find that our smaller dog had passed away sometime overnight and we were heartbroken. I had assumed it was due to old age as she is approximately 13 years old. However after talking to my son who had been feeding her, he mentioned that she was lethargic, excessively thirsty and had lost her appetite a few days prior. In thinking back, I remember my husband telling me that our dogs didn't care for the Pedigree that I had just purchased. In order to get them to eat it, he was adding some canned food to the dry. He noticed that they would pick around the dry and try to only eat the wet.
Well yesterday, I got a call from my son asking me what we had fed our other the dog that morning. Just the Pedigree. He then told me that our larger dog had started vomiting. A light bulb went off in my head and I asked him to throw out any food that was left in his dish. I had also remembered my husband telling me that our larger dog was short of breath a few days earlier when he was out playing with him. I couldn't help to suspect that the Pedigree was making our dog sick. I went online to see if there was any information about a possible recall of the Pedigree dog food. Instead I found a multitude of complaints about Pedigree dog food. Most people reporting how their dogs became ill in a matter of days and how some eventually died.
While reading through these testimonials from other pet owners, I am convinced that it was the Pedigree that caused the death of our dog and the illness in the other. I'm outraged that this is happening. It is being reported, but there has yet to be any kind of recall. How can we all have dogs with the same exact symptoms with a single common denominator and yet no action taken by the company?

We recently switched to Pedigree Complete Nutrition 55 lb Dry dog food from Sam's Club. The first three bags my 3 dogs did fine. The 4th bag we noticed that the Terrier mix was vomiting frequently and the Dachshund mix was not as active. We thought they were getting into something outside. Last week our Lab had a very strange episode where he was opening his mouth, turning his head sideways and sticking his tongue out all contorted. It went away as fast as it started. We opened a new bag 1 week ago and they all three do nothing but sleep. They all 3 have vomited and have the most disgusting breath. They have horrible gas that is running us out of the room. The Terrier mix's tummy gurgles constantly.
The Lab is 12 years old and seems to be having a harder time seeing than normal and is shedding in clumps. We put two and two together that maybe the bag of food we recently opened was bad. They all three have been drinking more water than normal as well. I will contact their Vet but after seeing the other recent posts I can safely assume that there is an issue with the bulk Pedigree dry dog food. It is a shame because they like it better than other brands we have purchased.

So I changed everything including your food and it stopped. Recently I reintroduced your food and BAM, he had another seizure. Everything else had been reintroduced except your food. Now I don't want anything from you, but you need to remove the defective product from the shelves. After doing research I realized that a lot of people are having the same problems, some people even worse. I'm concerned as I read about Pedigree dog food. My dog was raised on the Pedigree dry dog food for most of her life. I usually buy the very large bags at Sam's club - I believe they are 55 lb. and during the winter I stock up so I don't have to buy such a big item every time. My dog will be 14 in Oct; however, she has had two serious bouts of what I would consider is some type of intestinal problem. The first time it happened her symptoms were more diarrhea and loose sometimes bloody stool (this was about 4 - 5 months ago) then just 3 weeks ago she started throwing up multiple times in one day. She is the type of dog who only eats when hungry so we put food in her bowl and she only eats 2x day. She is not considered overweight.
Given that she threw up all weekend, I took her to the vet the following Monday. They told me to put her on a bland diet chicken/rice or ground beef/rice and this along with Flagyl and one other med seemed to keep her somewhat stable. After her meds were up, I started to mix the Pedigree dry with some of the home cooked meals - she threw up once after that and we weren't too concerned, then a day later she had the worst diarrhea. She was actually having to go while before she could even squat down - it was awful. I took her for a follow up as this concerned us that something more serious could be wrong. She was negative for worms, and they took some blood work to investigate further. With the other notes about how down and out these other dogs were, I am fairly certain that the Pedigree food is to blame.
We did not keep the bags since we bought in quantity and combined in a container at home, so I have no way to trace - plus I understand that the company has NOT officially called for a recall. My dog is now on IAM's Vet blend - it's very expensive and I may go back to just cooking for her, but I'm not going to give her any more Pedigree. I am a consumer who does not wish to buy products from China - and if this is where the problems lie, this is the wrong way for the company to increase profit margins at the expense of pets and their owners. I'm learning about this news a bit late, as I read, these types of experiences were in the news for some time.

At first we thought that she had got a hold of something, but then realized when she ate this food, about an hour later she would puke it up. We decided to take away her dog food & feed her something bland, like boiled chicken. She ate that and a couple hours later, that was back up. She finally got to where she wouldn't eat at all for the rest of the day. Finally on Sunday, she was able to keep a few milkbones down. Then another brand of food. Not really sure when we started feeding our sheltie Dentastix... was a lunch treat. In October 2012, he was given a clean bill of health for his annual check up. We were told he was in excellent shape. In summer (2013), we noticed his eyes and hearing were failing. Filmy covering developed over eyes almost overnight... like cataracts, but not really cataracts. Seems to have suddenly gone deaf. Chalked it up to him being almost 12 years old. In October 2013 physical, he had lost weight from last year's physical... from 19 to 14.5; noted to vet that he had recently started falling down.. would sort of zone out and then fall over.
Vet found a slight heart murmur and thyroid values were elevated. Attributed falling over to heart murmur and thyroid issues. Noticed some shaking like Parkinson's or something. Took him to vet 3 or 4 more times for additional blood work, x-rays, etc. Started him on pills. Pills didn't seem to help much. He lost appetite and we tried several different food ideas (from dry to canned and finally to vet recipe). Eats, but doesn't really seem as interested most of the time. He started to cover up his urine spots in the snow, with more snow.. urine smells ammonia like. More tests revealed failing kidneys and problems with urine filtering properly. Sleeps a lot.
We were advised to "prepare for the worst." He is still with us, but believe his time is limited. Am wondering now about whether the Dentastix have contributed to his slow demise and if they are another China creation, even though I believe the bag shows manufactured in USA. If I had read some of these reviews on this manufacturer earlier, we might not have ever given them to our dog.

I fed my Cockapoo Pedigree Small Bites and the adult size when Small Bites was not available. Over the years, she vomited, had foul gas, and diarrhea all the time. Many days she would not eat her food at all. I added chicken and she would eat, and many times still not eat. Well, after cleaning my carpet for the hundredth time, I started to research Pedigree dog food. I wish I had in the beginning.
My dog's coat was dull and I started to worry. I fed the same dog food to another small dog that I kept for a week and he had diarrhea as well. One of them threw up on my sofa, and I made up my mind to cook for her and threw away the dog food which was a full bag as well. I am convinced that Pedigree dry food was making my dog ill and she was not herself at times. Since cooking her meals, chicken, chicken liver, gizzards, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, brown rice - (switching ingredients so she won't get bored) - she has been acting like a very energetic puppy. I powder egg shells for calcium and add a few drops of olive oil for omega 3 oil. She is doing very well with the fresh food I cook for her.
A few times she vomited her food, and I started to wonder if the Denta Stix was a problem now. Well, going to stop giving her the product since it is from Pedigree, and continue the Newman's Own organic treats and see what happens. I brush her teeth so I will be helping with her dental hygiene by brushing.
I will never buy Pedigree products ever again. I am convinced that the ingredients made her itch like crazy. I thought she was having a serious flea infestation, but it was the dog food. She would dig, scratch, bite and lick herself like her skin was on fire. I switched to an organic shampoo and conditioner, took her off Pedigree and she is so much better now. Organic products are more expensive, but my little friend is so worth every penny. Oh, and her poop does not smell foul like it used to. I train her to pee pads in my extra bathroom for night time - we don't go out after dark. Well, she can poop on a pad and the pad is not stained at all. On Pedigree she would have watery stools that were a stinky mess.
I love it that my baby has more energy now and wants to play all the time. When she knows I am mixing up her food, she comes into the kitchen and anxiously waits for me to set her bowl down. I don't have to beg her to eat anymore, and I don't waste money on dog food she won't eat anymore. We are both much, much happier now.Shame on you Pedigree - your profit making is killing precious pets. Shame, Shame, Shame!

They began losing weight rapidly and drinking excessive amounts of water. They were lethargic and stopped eating. I knew it had to be the food. On multiple occasions now after being given a Dentastix Fresh chew our 6 year old German Shorthaired Pointer has been sick, bright orange/yellow bile and there has been urine around the kitchen in the morning. We hadn't linked her eating them to the issues, but it's become worse recently, we came down to her crashing around the kitchen, with piles of poo and urine everywhere, foam on the doors and kitchen units with blood from her mouth. We took her for blood and urine tests and nothing too untoward, no blood abnormalities, her urine a little watery, retested and then fine. She's in lovely condition, 24kg, only has the UK's only Natural Dog Food Company dry food and would hunt all day if you let her!
A couple of days ago after a Dentastix Fresh and when we finally started to wonder, we awoke to the kids screaming, she'd woken my 15 year old daughter up and was staggering round totally vacant, growling at us all and had tried to bite her. We didn't realize this was the latter half of a larger seizure, she took no notice at all of any voice commands, her back end wobbling, her rough all standing up down her back and tail, like she knew nothing, like she was blind, just staring, very upsetting to witness and even I who she usually dotes on, was afraid. Her bed was all wet, the same bile type orangey yellow watery sick and a major seizure. She came round after around 5-6 minutes and then retired to bed and was tired and docile for a number of hours...
We took her straight to the vets, they kept her in for observation and took blood and urine samples once again. We had the results today, no signs of any markers in. The blood to indicate any liver or kidney abnormalities or signs of disease, although we wouldn't know how much these tests can tell you, but based on her age, fitness and condition don't think she has any ongoing diseased organs currently. Of course it is easy to blame the Denastix Fresh chews, but it has happened on multiple occasions and the symptoms becoming more alarming!
So we've stopped the chews, she's been absolutely fine for the next two nights, and again the first urine tests suggested an elevated water content, so we're recording what she drinks and doing more urine tests over the coming week, and time will tell, but I'd put money on it that if she had another Dentastix Fresh chew, it will happen again, okay they're possibly okay for many dogs, but it could be that she cannot tolerate the Eucalyptus oil in the chews, maybe it's triggering a yet undiagnosed issue, but from the bit of research I've done, the list of those with issues is growing. Be warned, many vets on YouTube and online are clearly saying that eucalyptus oil is toxic to dogs and the other ingredients aren't ideal either, maybe think twice before falling for the caring adverts and the dream of a dog with perfect fresh breath!

It is horrible that they have not pulled the food and are ignoring what is going on. I agree that a class action suit should be brought against them.

Like most reviews here, my dog ate a Pedigree brand dry food, within 1-2 hours' time he was vomiting profusely, had horrible diarrhea, was in pain, extremely uncomfortable and lethargic during the period the poison in the food was in his system. We put him on a 48-hour fast, medicine for his symptoms and when he got better, started off with a light diet and then tried the Pedigree again in case his symptoms were caused by something else - they weren't, it was the food. Within the same time period, the symptoms hit him again and significantly worse. They lasted for almost a week over Christmas, which was a shame as the poor guy didn't get any treats or his share of the turkey. Only today has he been okay and able to tolerate food again. He had no other food, foreign substances in his body, no food intolerances or allergies, so the only cause of this was Pedigree.
We had to put him in veterinary care overnight and the Vet confirmed the food was the cause of the illness. My wife manages a medical laboratory so the food is going through extensive testing and then all that information is going to our lawyers for the lawsuit against Pedigree. They have known about this for over a year. They refuse to respond to, amend or resolve their safety issues. They are 100% directly responsible for the deaths of puppies and dogs and the horrible illness and discomfort of thousands more dogs around the world. If they refuse to fix their criminal mistake, boycott their brand and all Mars products, contact your lawyers and take legal action to make them change and pay for their crimes. Any issues with Pedigree, please report them to the FDA so that they can take formal action against them.

Opened new bag of Marrow Treats purchased at local pet food store in Midland, Ontario and gave to my 85 lb. 7 yr old male golden retriever, 8 lb. 9 yr old male Yorkie, 3.5 lb. 2 yr old female Maltese, 4.5 lb. 2 yr old female Maltese....Within 12 hours all 4 were vomiting and had severe diarrhea. Determined it was treats causing them to be sick as they had been eating their Natural Balance grain free food from same bag for more than 2 weeks without issue prior to the new Purina marrow treats. After we stopped giving the treats the golden recovered quickly, the smaller dogs had more of a struggle and the smaller Maltese had to receive intravenous treatment to rehydrate. We will be notifying Purina office in Ontario, Canada.
We have given these treats in the past months/years without issue, can only suggest that Purina has either changed suppliers or has an issue with one or more of their feed stock ingredients. Cannot be a "co-incidence" 4 dogs of different sizes and ages and weights becoming sick "at the same time" eating the same treat! Will stick to home-made treats from now on! We need STRICTER REGULATIONS regarding manufacturing, processing and retailing of pet foods in Canada & North America!

Our dog got very ill after eating Pedigree Jumbones on Christmas Day. He couldn't get up, was very unstable, wouldn't drink water and had difficulty getting up and down the stairs. He was trembling, shaking badly. My daughter became extremely concerned, and we made an emergency vet appointment for him. After $150 visit, which included bloodwork, the vet still had no idea what was wrong with him. That day was the ONLY day our dog had EVER had a Pedigree product - we usually feed him Evolution brand, which has no corn, soy or wheat in it, as he does have a mild allergic reaction to grains. The bones were a gift from a friend, and we decided that a little treat would be OK for him.
Last night, it dawned on us that his illness may be because of the treat. I googled Pedigree and found that there have been MANY serious problems with this brand. We threw away the other bone and immediately gave him rice, green beans and sweet potatoes for his meals. Luckily for us, he is responding OK today and having far less difficulty getting around. We are not in the clear, however, and are keeping a close eye on him. He was poisoned by Pedigree!

We discontinued using the product immediately and started to give them boiled chicken and rice. My older Doberman bounced back fairly quickly but my younger Doberman continued to decline. I called Mars Corp and was told they had not received any complaints.
By looking on here, that's not the case. They wanted my vet's info which I have provided along with the $130 vet bill I incurred due to this product. Both of my dogs exhibited explosive diarrhea with blood, weight loss, darkened urine and vomiting. Fecal results for parasites came back negative which confirmed this was bacterial. We have been feeding my 8-year-old dog Pedigree for over 5 years. She stopped eating the Pedigree food almost 6 months ago, preferring cat food and table scraps. She was never underweight so we didn't think much of it. We recently got a new Yellow Lab puppy and began feeding him an Eukanuba brand of puppy food. 2 weeks ago, we purchased Pedigree puppy food and both dogs began eating it. Within 2 days, both had violent diarrhea and became lethargic. They were not drinking water. My older dog was barely making it upstairs and was soiling herself. I did a google search and noticed all of the recent consumer complaints. I switched brands of dog food immediately, and since that time the puppy has completely rebounded and has more energy than ever. The diarrhea has stopped and they are both now drinking plenty of water. The older dog has more energy and is back to her normal self.

Next, our 7-month-old GSD started acting weird, very thirsty and not having normal bowel movements. THEN, both dogs started with diarrhea and became very sick. They were unable to control themselves in the house and vomiting. I feel horrible because it took us so long to realize it could be their food! Our dogs were so sick and to think we were doing this to them. We did chicken and rice for a few days and switched to another brand. We had previously given our German Shepherd Kibbles N Bits and she was always a good eater. Sometimes, she left just a little and there would be ants over her bowl when I came to retrieve it. Some weeks ago, we got Pedigree Adult Nutrition dog food for her and she did not care for it. I had commented to my husband that even though quite a bit would be left in the bowl, no ants would ever be on the bowl, i.e., that even the ants were not going for it. Instead of buying her new food, I regrettably came up with ways to get her to eat some--I or my son would add some wet food to it or mix doggie treats in.
I never researched Pedigree until tonight--after the shock of my dog dying. Our story bears extreme similarity to the others. Within the past few weeks after becoming a light eater, she then also began vomiting often after eating. She also had a couple accidents in the house even though she sleeps right by the doggie door. A few days ago, I noticed she no longer jumped. I would throw the ball toward her and whereas she has always been a great catcher, she would either let it go right by or even hit her in the face. Based on her symptoms, I thought maybe she had an hernia so I took her to the vet who would only opine that it may be something systemic and he prescribed antibiotics, anti-vomiting drugs and because the x-rays revealed a lot of gas in her stomach, an antacid.
Unfortunately, she had stopped eating anything by the time I tried to get her to take the meds, so it was an ordeal getting them down her. Poor baby!! This morning when I checked on her, she looked almost dead and about an hour and half later went into cardiac arrest before my eyes. After spending the day grieving, I thought I would do an internet search on the food she had been eating recently and am shocked at all the terrible experiences others have had as well and that there was no recall of this food. I only wish we could go back in time and buy her different dog food.
Shame on Pedigree for ignoring these complaints and for the tremendous pain and death it has caused. I had always thought of Pedigree as a quality brand and never thought to check on what people were saying lately. Moreover, why has there not been a recall??? If children were dropping dead (my baby was technically only 14 in human years), there would have immediately been a recall! I implore Pedigree to stop production as I am at a loss as to what else could have caused this especially with the multitude of similar stories.

Once he did become conscious, he tried getting up and just fell back and then starting rolling. When he did come around enough, he vomited several times. I could tell that he had went through a lot and a toll was taken on his body.
The following day I contacted Consumer Concerns at Pedigree where the lady I was speaking with was rude and very unconcerned. Her response was Pedigree is tested before sent from market and that Pedigree food is the Healthiest food you can feed your dog. I would never have dreamed going to the store and purchasing dog food by what Kroger promotes as a trusted brand would end up with the death of a previously healthy puppy. Our older dog showed all the same symptoms but recovered after we discovered the cause.
After 4 months, both dogs were eating Iams or Purina Pro Puppy. Extremely healthy and very active. The bag of food was purchased approximately a week and 2 days before. We noticed immediately they were biting their feet, chewing their skin, hair loss, scratching nonstop. I gave them baths and was treating the hotspots topically thinking it was an external issue. We left for 2 days giving the dog sitter instructions to continue the process. By the time we returned home, we noticed the older dog was not moving around much... The puppy would just lay beside us not wanting to play chase sticks or her ball.
We thought they just became unhappy because we left for a few days. By midday Saturday, the diarrhea was horrible. They stopped drinking and eating. We contacted our vet and as we discussed the circumstances, they were aware of Pedigree food. Our sweet little girl passed away Sunday morning. I found the following by accident Pedigreecomplaints.com. All the stories and conditions were exactly the same. One thing that stands out is the effect on many breeds not just one. I contacted Pedigree. They called me back today and the condescension was appalling. She denied there were any complaints and I suggested she simply needed to "google" the above and her response was, "We don't monitor other sites," and kept over and over repeating the same phrase. I had a Chocolate Labrador Retriever who was 11 years old June 21, 2013. He had begun to have hip problems the last 2 or 3 months and I took him to the vet and we decided to try Prednisone. It seemed to be working and last week the vet recommended going from one pill a day to one every other day.
I had been feeding him Kibbles and Bits until about 7 months ago when I decided to switch to Pedigree dry food. Then about a month or 6 weeks ago, I decided to add a can of Pedigree to his supper meal of dry Pedigree, thinking I was treating him. Two weeks ago he threw up, but then he didn't do it anymore. He did slow down on his eating at times, seeming hesitant to eat even the canned food, though he would do so. Saturday, November 2, 2013 he threw up in the house. He was a house dog and very well trained, never using the bathroom in the house since he was a puppy. I left about 2:00 pm Saturday afternoon and got home about 9:00 pm Saturday evening. Buddy had thrown up big time 3 different times!
In the last couple of weeks he had begun drinking an extraordinary amount of water. I thought that maybe his hip medicine was making him thirsty. He was lying on his bed. As I was cleaning up his messes, he started trying to throw up again and I took him outside. He was unable to do so as he probably had nothing left to throw up. Then he just sat down and looked at me. I called him and he just sat there looking at me. He had never refused to come before. I went over and talked to him and he finally got up and came in the house.
I then went and got some liquid Pepto-Bismol and gave to him. We had tried some hip medicine some time before and it made him sick and the vet said give him pepto so I had a syringe for that. I put some water under his nose and he took a few sips of that and promptly threw it up. I stayed up with him and a few times he tried to throw up, but there wasn't anything. He was panting really hard and several times he just started to quiver. I had noticed over the last couple or 3 weeks he had started panting really hard I wondered about this, but attributed it to the fact he was getting old. Buddy was a beautiful chocolate lab, well trained, very well mannered, and a gift from my late wife who also loved him. I think everyone loved him. He was my best friend and companion, always greeting me at the door. His last hours were miserable.
At about 4:35 am on Sunday, November 3 he died. I miss him terribly. If his death was natural, I regret it, but can accept it as part of life, which can be hard. However if Pedigree had anything to do with it, they should be put out of business and the head people thrown in jail. I had heard a few weeks earlier about some dog food possibly killing dogs, but didn't hear the name. I never imagined that it would be a national, well-known brand such as Pedigree. But after Buddy died something told me to check into it and I found Pedigree was the accused. I don't know that they are guilty. But I recommend that anybody feeding their dogs Pedigree, quit right now and throw out whatever they have left and buy a different brand until and if Pedigree can prove their innocence. If they are innocent, I feel for them. If they are guilty, then any punishment isn't good enough for them.

I am writing this post in a state of shock and horror because my little six month old pug named Attila, just died late last night in the care of a veterinarian, after falling ill with Parvo-like symptoms that might have been caused by being fed Pedigree little bites dog food for the first time last week. I made a dreadful mistake last Tuesday when I chose to pick up a bag of the Pedigree food as a convenience at the grocery store, largely because I didn't want to drive out of my way to buy our dogs usual food.
After feeding our four adult pugs and our one pug puppy the new food that Tuesday and Wednesday at their accustomed feeding time, all of them became sick- throwing up the new food after eating it- with little Attila seeming to have the worst stomach upset. My wife and I immediately stopped feeding the dogs the new food and re-stocked their regular brand instead. Fortunately, by Thursday the four older dogs all seemed to return quickly to normal, but the puppy seemed to be having a harder time, even though he was acting fairly normally.
On Thursday Attila was still trying to play and interact with my wife and I, as well as with the other dogs, but he showed little interest in food even though he did eat a small amount of his regular food, and his formerly extremely high energy level were dropping. At this point, we hoped he was getting over the problem with the food change, and resolved to take him to the vet if it seemed like he was getting any worse. By Friday evening, when we saw him again after returning from work, the change had become alarming, and even though the puppy was not running a fever, he seemed chilled to the bone, and he definitely showed no interest in eating or physically moving. We tried to feed him cottage cheese and white rice to soothe his stomach, and bundled him up in his favorite blanket and resolved to take him to the vet in the morning if he didn't improve- a decision that I deeply rue, considering the eventual consequences.
On Saturday morning we found that the puppy had left bloody mucus-like diarrhea and dry vomit in his crate so we immediately took him to the local vet where they gave Attila a blood transfusion, hooked up an IV, put him on anti-biotics and recommended that they keep him under observation until at least this Monday. The veterinarian treated Attila for Parvovirus, as that is what all of the symptoms indicated, and told us that it was lucky that we had caught this in its early stages, that Attila had responded very well to the treatment, and that we could expect a full recovery. As of yesterday, he was fully responsive, showed no fever, was re-hydrated, and we expected to bring our friend back home today or tomorrow.
That was until this morning, when I called at the vet's opening time to get an update about Attila's status, and I was told that my little dog passed away last night at 11PM.
For my part, I cannot stop thinking about what I could have done differently to have taken care of my wonderful puppy better than I did- I should never have changed his dog food because I wanted to save time going to a more convenient store, and I should have taken him to the vet the instant he appeared to be getting ill- and these are brutally hard thoughts to wrestle with. That said, the pain that my wife and I are dealing with today has also evidently been felt by many loving families that have trusted in the Pedigree brand of dog food and seen their beloved companions hurt by it.
Before this nightmare happened, and before I discovered and read some of the recent anecdotal accounts of similar Pedigree related tragedies, I had no idea that buying the products of such a reputable brand might be hazardous. It is possible that the new dog food had nothing to do with Attila's sickness and death, as well as the temporary sickness of out other adult dogs, but after discovering so many recent and similar stories posted here and on other forms, I smell a rat. It strains credulity to imagine that the sickness and death reported by many Pedigree using pet owners is coincidence, contrivance, or fantasy.
After the heartbreak of the last week, and the brutal realization that I will never hold little Attila in my lap again and that my family has lost at least the next ten years of his companionship, I will tell anybody And everybody that I know- for the rest of my life- to not buy Pedigree or any other brands that originate from their parent company or business partners. Furthermore, we have saved the suspect dog food and receipt of purchase, and we will have a necropsy performed on my poor, beloved and missed puppy Attila, and we will explore ever possible option to make sure as many people as possible learn about the dangers of this product.
I have included some pictures of my friend Attila below, and the one of him in the towel was taken the last time I saw him alive at our local veterinarian's office, just before he received treatment.

I have two large breed dogs - one is a champion purebred yellow lab and the other is a Plotthound mix. This morning, I was very unpleasantly surprised to find dry mold on several pieces of dog food, so I saved some of it in a plastic bag. I was not aware of any of the recent complaints/problems with Pedigree dog food so all of this comes as a total shock to me. Feeding my dogs food containing poisonous mold makes me very angry and now I'm beginning to think that some of the health related problems my dogs have been experiencing in the last (month or two) are related to this.
My Plotthound has developed a tumor, under his front armpit which continues to grow... Both dogs have become somewhat lethargic, lazy, and stool has been running for a week. After researching a bit online, I've found that MANY other Pedigree buyers are experiencing similar problems with their animals and perhaps even death after use of this product. This makes me both sad and extremely concerned since my dogs are VERY important to me. I threw out 2 large bags of the food this morning and I'm not looking back. I may call my attorney later this afternoon and get some advice. I suggest everyone do the same and I'm thinking we should all start a class action lawsuit against Mars, Inc for medical damages and product reimbursement.

My 9-year old female Pitbull Terrier CoCo, spayed and healthy, she's never close to other dogs (we're her pack) and we've had her since a pup and have been feeding her Pedigree for the last 5 years with no noticeable problems, until a few weeks ago. We bought her Pedigree dry Healthy Longevity with lamb and rice. After piecing the puzzle together and ruling out her getting into anything in the house (she sleeps in a kennel and is with someone 90% of the time and if she's left alone, she's either in my room or in her kennel, which are both doggie proofed), well now it's been going on 3 weeks of very foul diarrhea and gas. She has the diarrhea several times a day and sometimes several times in one outing.
She's now lost her appetite, but does seem a bit lazier than the norm, drinks water like crazy and pants sometimes even when she's resting or it isn't even hot. Now that I'm really thinking about it, the only time she showed improvement was when I had her fast and just gave her liquid, plain water and rice water once that day. My husband first suggested that it may be the particular bag of food, so we went to a different store and bought her another small bag Pedigree dry Active with Chicken and Vegetable and it all starts again. Stopped feeding her the Pedigree again as of today. I want to fast her today, keeping plenty of water on hand hoping that will help flush that poison out of her.
When I started reading all the posts on this site, I had to share ours. If Pedigree is truly responsible for making these poor fur babies suffer and even die, then they should be held liable!!!!! My CoCo is not in life threatening distress, but this is def not the norm and never has been. However, I want to get down to wth is going on before it gets to that. I pray for us all and our fur babies! Pedigree Dog Food needs to be stopped or stand up and take responsibility!!!! PS..... I have both questionable bags of Pedigree in isolation.

I bought this Pedigree Dentastix last month for my 8 month old pup on her birthday. I started to give her one stix a day for a few days. First few days, seemed to be fine and then after that she immediately threw up. I remembered one day she threw up almost 10 times. We were worried and stopped giving her any food...only ice cube for 24 hrs. After that, we gave her brown rice and broiled chicken...mixed with her daily food. She seems to be okay for weeks without any treats. BUT this morning I decided to give her one Pedigree Dentastix after finish daily walking. She immediately vomited and her lips were swollen. I freaked out and went to see the vet very quickly.
They gave her a fast injection to cure her swollen. They told me to give her Benadryl (25mg) for 4 times to make the swollen go away. Observe her for 24 hrs. I am pretty sure that she definitely has the problem with that Pedigree Dentastix. She is a very healthy and strong puppy. Go out for a walk 1.25 miles almost every day. I am sorry that I didn't read this review's thread before. Otherwise she would not have been sick. :(

I have three healthy dogs, ages 6, 5 and 3. These are my babies and I treat them as such. Very well taken care of. I purchased a bag of Pedigree Dentastix a few weeks ago and gave them each one for a few days. I noticed my 6 year old one night acting strange. She was in my bed and woke up in the middle of the night. I thought she just needed to go outside. So, I got and proceeding to let her out, but I noticed she wouldn't jump off the bed. So, I picked her up and set her on the ground. Immediately she stumbled. I carried her outside and after she relieved herself, she took one step and started stumbling. She looked completely drunk. I knew something was wrong. This has never happened. I tried to remain calm and stayed up with her until she fell asleep.
The next morning, I noticed her stumbling again and soon after, she had a seizure. That night, the same thing happened with my three year old puppy. She woke up in the middle of the night and had a seizure in the bed. I panicked. I can't stand seeing them in any distress. These dogs are truly part of my family. Vet ran tests on both of them and both showed nothing negative. I started racking my brain trying to figure what was wrong and realized the only change made in their diet or lifestyle was the Dentastix. I have stopped giving them those and have not had an episode since.

She had never been sick previously. I had been feeding her Pedigree for about a year. I immediately gave her some water with a little vinegar added. Had to use eye dropper to get her to drink. I fed her some spoonfuls of Pure Pumpkin. I trashed the Pedigree. She has recovered and now she gets a highly recommended natural dry food. However I see recalls on lots of brands, even the highly recommended. The food I am now using has never been recalled, thank goodness.

My 8 year old Lab mix, Rudi, had to be put down 1.5 weeks ago. He started losing weight about 4 or 5 weeks prior and then started having vomiting and diarrhea as well as loss of appetite. He was losing weight rapidly but his stomach was blowing up. I didn't pay much attention at the time we got his last bag of Dentastix about 2 weeks before all this started that he wasn't that crazy about them anymore, like he had been. The vet did blood work and said he had very elevated liver enzymes. After further x-rays and tests, his liver and spleen were very enlarged and there was a large mass as well as fluid leaking into the abdomen which they feel was probably blood. We tried for a while to see if meds or eating whatever he liked would help, but in the end he could barely walk and didn't want to eat anything, so we had no choice to put him down. He was very thirsty for those weeks. I feel so sad he is gone, but much worse now after reading all of these stories. I wish I would have known!!! I miss you Rudi!

He runs in the backyard and slept in the crate at night if it is cold, or in his dog house outside if it isn't. I fed him from the new bag of food on Wednesday, and on Wednesday evening, he was acting a little different, sort of sluggish. He would be better and then seem a little off again. Yesterday, he threw up but his food was disappearing. He was drinking water and seemed hydrated.
Being that it was a weekend and I didn't think that his being a little off was life threatening, I decided to wait until Monday to take him to the vet. I shouldn't have, because this morning he was dead. My husband, today, said the only difference was the dog food, so we began looking online and sure enough, there are several reports of this a week!!!! Why won't Pedigree stand up and say something? Recall their food??? Today, my little boy lost his puppy.... This just isn't okay with me... If there is a class action suit, I am in!

If I could give a rating of 0, I would. The products this company produces aren't even worthy of rating and should just receive a 0. My dogs have eaten Pedigree Adult "Complete Nutrition" for a very long time; one getting-up-there mix who is now 11 and a little beagle who is 6. Sam, the older, has eaten it for nearly 8 years of his life and Precious, my beagle, has eaten it for all 6 of hers, until yesterday.
A little background: Sam began getting lumps under his skin and one broke out on his back but was surgically removed. It was black and disgusting and he still has them under the skin. They are not ticks. They have been examined and are benign. Precious now has Addison's, and it is interesting to see many posts related to dogs having kidney failure after eating this product.
After researching the ingredient "meat and bone meal" and finding its disgusting origin (ground up parts of zoo animals, road kill, euthanized animals, sick animals, etc) and that it is at the top of the list in pedigree, I have also found the link to Addison's and possibly even the lumps. In further research, I have found a link between Addison's (adrenal fatigue, kidney failure, etc), dog food, and B12. I am not saying that Pedigree has caused the disease or the lumps, but really, the red flags are all around and I am really considering taking legal action against this company.
Putting aside the research, both dogs have had a history of throwing up their food after getting this product, if only we had realized sooner that it was the food. I for one was ignorant to what was being put in dog food and thought it was all the same, going on believing the dogs were getting into trash, or something outside. No, please be careful with all of the choices. Avoid meat and bone meal, which is a main ingredient in many of Pedigree's product. I truly wonder, since as humans if we become cannibals, we contract health problems. This is not coincidence.
Avoid Pedigree at all costs and research for yourself what I've shown above. It's shocking. In this day, things are masked from the public. Please be sure to, just as we do for ourselves, check the ingredients of everything you give your dog.

We came home from holiday in May and our dog had been in kennels - the same kennels we have used for 30 years. He was happy and healthy. Four days later, he started being lethargic and then started with terrible diarrhea. He is 12 years old and has never made a mess in the house, but this time he actually climbed the stairs, three times, to wake us up to let him out. We took him to the vets who gave him antibiotics and said to go back in a week. During the next few days he got worse. He was frothing at the mouth, was weak, finding it difficult to get in the car and panting. My daughter suggested a second opinion and so we took him to her vet, on the Friday.
After a thorough examination, she put him on probiotics and ran a battery of tests. We expected the results on the following Monday. On the Sunday night he was so poorly that my husband sat up with him all night. We really thought we were losing our beloved dog. The vet phoned the next morning and said his thyroid levels were so low that he needed an immediate supplement. He was put on a high dose of thyroxine equivalent. During the next two weeks he was tested for Cushing's Disease and had numerous tests and tablets. His thyroid levels then went sky high. During this time he was panting and frothing and could hardly walk.
I had read the reviews on this website and I can only come to the conclusion that it was the Pedigree that we fed him on when we returned home from holiday. He had been on a different brand in the kennels and then we bought a new batch of Pedigree on our return. Getting him well has been a long haul. We were due to go away again in September and up to the week before, I was unsure whether to go and leave him. It has taken three months and a lot of money to get him right. He is now off the thyroid tablets as that has stabilized and is more or less like his old self. Needless to say, we changed his food the moment he started being poorly (thanks to reading your website). I am not aware of anything being reported about this in England but the similarities are too close to ignore. Thank you everyone for reporting this.

Hopefully now that we realized it was the dog food (thanks for all these complaint stories, they were very helpful) she will continue to get better. I reported to the Walmart where I bought it.
The customer service lady thanked me because she bought same dog food Tuesday and her dog has been pulling out hair but not vomiting. Her manager, however, did not care and told me it was a problem with the manufacturer, which I told her I understood but I thought they might want to remove the product from their shelves but they seemed uninterested. How sad. Hopefully, the customer service employee will do something even if her manager won't. We are saving the product rather than returning so we can have it tested. This is very disturbing. I am concerned about the recent packages of Pedigree Healthy Weight dog food I recently purchased. Since my dog has gotten older and put on weight, the vet told me to switch to a lower calorie food. I started her on Purina Fit and Trim a few years ago and she had no problems at all. Recently, Wal-mart has either stopped carrying the Purina Fit and Trim or they never seem to have it, so I started buying Pedigree Healthy Weight.
My dog got really sick. She started panting a lot, acting lethargic, drinking a ton of water, howling in the middle of the night to be let out, sitting outside for hours at a time because she wasn't feeling good, and defecating on the floor inside the house. At first, I thought this behavior might be because she's getting older (she's 9) and then I thought she must've gotten into something that she shouldn't have. But the behavior continued for several weeks until finally I thought about the change in the food. She was on the Pedigree for about 6-8 weeks.
I finally looked it up online and found websites where people were reporting lots of concerns about Pedigree dog food. I didn't know if these concerns were valid or not, but I thought I should try switching dog foods. I went to a store other than Wal-mart and found Purina's new brand of a low calorie dog food and switched my dog back. Right away that first day, I started noticing improvements...and by two days later, she's completely back to normal. I have no idea what is in the Pedigree dog food that caused the problems, but it's really concerning.
I tried filling out a form on Pedigree's website to notify them of the concern, but every time I tried to enter the required UPC code and manufacturer's code date on the form, it would say, "Please re-enter the information.” I thought maybe I had written it down wrong, so I tried numerous variations of upper case, lower case, changing my O to 0 or I to 1, etc. but nothing worked. So then I tried calling their 1-800 number. I received a message saying that all their representatives are in a meeting. I left a message for someone to call me back.

Same timeframe, our 13-year old basset hound became unable to control her diarrhea and became disoriented. Vet said low white blood cell count. Then another basset hound became ill with the same symptoms and the same diet. When we took them to the vet for examination, they of course don't feed Pedigree... so they switched brands for the time they were staying. That and a probiotic along with metronidazole and they are fine.
Since then, we have thrown away the Pedigree foods and have started using the same brand food as the vet. No issues. All is quiet again. Now here's the weird thing. My daughter in another state told me that tonight her boxer has thrown up and had been dealing with diarrhea earlier this week. She was feeding the same Pedigree Healthy Digestion food! We believed it to be his allergies. On the 18th, he had walked into our kitchen and lost his balance. He tried to get up and lost his balance again and urinated on the floor. We immediately took him to our vet where they ran a battery of test on him and everything came back normal. We brought him home and kept a very close eye on him. About 3 hours later, he had an episode where he lost his balance again and lost control of his bowels. He seemed disoriented and had a hard time walking. About 45 minutes later, he went into a full blown grand mal seizure. We took him to the emergency vet.
After 18 hours of observation, the vet thought he could have idiopathic epilepsy. Around 5pm on the 19th, the vet let us know that he had eaten and began to show signs of improvement but still had weakness in his hind legs. We drove up to decided if we thought we could care for him at home or if he needed to stay at the vet. As soon as we walked in the door, we could hear him crying out. The vet came out and told us that he just had another seizure. When we went back to see him, he appeared sedated. We stayed with him for a bit and headed home. At 11:35, we received a call from vet saying he had another seizure and now is unresponsive and taking shallow agonizing breaths.
We rushed to the vet and he passed away as we were walking in. After speaking with a friend from work or told me about this, I began to research it online. Lo and behold, I find this. I called the vet to talk to him about this. He was shocked that something like this is happening. He advised me to call the University of Illinois and see if they are willing to test the dog food. We also brought Pete home after he passed so we could bury him in the yard. I am hoping I can find someone somewhere that would be willing to test him and food to determine if the food is what did this. If anyone knows of something, please post it here.

My 11-year-old Lab developed yellow, foul smelling diarrhea out of the blue on Sept. 3, 2013. Because she had recently visited a dog park, we thought she had picked up a virus. Brought her to the vet who put her on prescription canned food and antibiotics. Her bowel movements became normal quickly, but when we switched her back to both Pedigree Dry & Canned Weight Management, her nasty diarrhea returned while still on antibiotics. I suspected it was the dry food because on the same day we opened a new bag of Pedigree, the diarrhea started on Sept 3. Her fecal test showed absolutely no virus, infection, parasite, or giardia. I've now switched her to Blue Buffalo and immediately her bowel movements went back to normal.

I have an 8-week-old dachshund puppy. When adopting her 2 weeks earlier I immediately purchased Science Diet puppy food (wet kind). She was amazingly growing and happy. Loving her food and her stool was normal. After going to the vet, whom recommended Pedigree as one of the best food for dogs. This is my first time being a dog owner. I have 3 cats (2 were poisoned by Hartz flee drops), 1 male bunny and 2 horses. I listened to the vet's recommendation and bought Pedigree. This was Friday and she ate her Pedigree food. Yesterday Saturday she was not very hungry and left her food sitting. It surprised me but did not think much of it.
In the middle of the night she cried and I noticed foaming around her mouth, could not stand on her back legs and seemed disorientated and has very bad diarrhea. All part of the day yesterday and part today she refuses to eat or drink. I forced her to drink by pouring water in her mouth which worked out fine and she is finally getting up again. It worked out for her because she is so tiny and the water flushed her little system fast. I put her Science Diet food back in her bowl and she gobbled it down. This was a few hours ago. She seems to be better but I would never advice anyone to buy Pedigree as I know after finding this site that these symptoms are exactly the same as my Maddie had.
So sorry for those whom have lost their friend by trusting this brand and especially one recommended by vets. Who cares what the USDA approved, if it hurts animals it should be recalled. Same goes for Hartz flee drops. I lost my cats on this together with hundreds of other people out there yet it is USDA approved so it must be good. So is giving ADD methamphetamines to children as the government and its "research mafia pharmaceutical money pit" claims it does not cause brain damage but if we are realistic and look at the research which states and proves Marijuana causes the adolescent brain not to develop but methamphetamine doesn't affect the brain, really let's be realistic here, there are many things hidden from the public and it is just a matter of time everything will be out in the open with one click of a mouse.
It's all about how much money is being made by distributing these poisons not about how much harm it causes. Shame, shame, shame. I pray when the world ends as we know it, God will win over these great evil money mafia distributors out there taking the lives and of innocent beings therefore playing with our lives. Who will pay for the emotional distress when it comes time to put an animal down because of the greed and ignorance of these companies and the distribution of poison!!! If I had called Pedigree customer support and would have an answer that this product is USDA approved and therefore it is safe and cannot have caused my puppy to be sick including all the other same incidents on this site, this person is not paid enough to have to hear my reply!!! This product should be recalled ASAP!!!

Same as many others, I have two dogs, one Wheaten Terrier, and a Maltipoo. I purchased the treat from Costco knowing that they put all their products through vigorous tests! After feeding the treat, my Maltipoo started to have accidents all over the house... It was a nightmare, but after 3 days, I started to be suspicious of my dog being sick... My Wheaten actually refused the treat, and my Maltipoo would eat his portion... While I was up all night on the third day taking my dog outside every half hour, I reached for the Dentastix to give to my Wheaten and a light bulb hit me! I place the bag on quarantine, and, sure enough, my Maltipoo got better! I am absolutely disgusted, especially after reading so many similar complaints. I will never, ever buy any treat or food for my dogs unless it is proven safe... Homemade is all they will get from now on! Thanks so much for everyone that has taken the time to write their story! I will now put in a formal complaint to the FDA...

I have been feeding my dog Pedigree for about 6 months now, with nothing positive or negative to comment about. I bought a new bag last week and as soon as my healthy 5-year old Lab started eating this new bag, she became ill. She threw up constantly for 4 days, was lethargic, and weak. She lost a significant amount of weight in just a few days. I could not get her to eat anything at all. As soon as I looked online and saw all the concerning comments that other dogs have been ill this past month, I immediately took the Pedigree out of her dish. The next day, she accepted other food and started to perk back up again. She has been off of Pedigree for 4 days now (thankfully, she stopped eating it herself before I figured out what was wrong) and she is almost back to normal. I'm grateful that she is herself, and there were no other consequences as I am reading here. I want to know if this was a bad batch of food... or what?? I am going to be calling Pedigree next week to inquire further.

My puppy has been having seizures. I took him to 3 vets - 2 said distemper, 1 said tetanus, even though he has not displayed symptoms except seizures. They took tests and came back inconclusive. And the vet told us that they believed it was not distemper. We had him on canned food for three days. He seemed better, only one seizure a day and very light. Then the fourth day, we ran out of canned, so we give him Pedigree dry. He had a severe seizure that night. We immediately took him off the Pedigree. And here we are going back to the vet for more medication because we are pretty sure the dog food has poisoned him.

After a few weeks of noticing my little dog of 15 years getting a progressively worse cough and wondering the source of it since nothing in her little life has changed since she was a pup, started to look at the ingredients of the packets for little champions. To my surprise onion powder and garlic powder was listed among them - 2 things that are deadly to any dog and over time I have unknowingly been feeding them to my dog. I don't know if it has been since the change in the ingredients or the entire time. When I called I was told that it was within USDA standards.... What is USDA standards when any dog it depends on their level of sensitivity to both and both are in the food? Hence and therefore, I asked for the review of those 2 ingredients in the food and again was told it was well within the standards. If my dog is having any problems it is not the food. I have changed the food for the sake of my old gal and I call her for her healthier living. As soon as I did she started drinking more and more crunchies (not Pedigree) have been eaten. The food was switched to a free of onion powder and garlic powder wet food ingredients.

Now he wouldn't. He didn't want to come in and would walk around outside until he fell. He was moaning and crying and couldn't get up and walk. With our vet's advice we put him down. A few weeks later our shepherd mix Shep started dragging his hind legs. We started to help him, but he couldn't even stand. He would just start yelping and then stopped eating. A few days later he had diarrhea so bad and couldn't stop vomiting. He couldn't even keep water down. By then the damaged was done. Still no recall; shame on Pedigree. We have a new dog and will never purchase ANY Pedigree product again. Why? Because he was a member of our family and shouldn't have gotten sick from his food. We didn't have to lose him so early.

I live in India and I had a Golden Labrador. Angel was only 8 when she had to be put to sleep 5 years ago. She had been on Pedigree and information wasn't as easily available. She seemed fine all her life. She wasn't too fond of Pedigree, but she would eat it once a day. She developed some strange tumor and got so sick that she stopped eating and was put on IV fluids. As mentioned earlier she had to be put down. Now I have a Lhasa Apso and I have noticed that while I have been giving her Pedigree for Small Adult, she has got this allergic itch. She keeps scratching herself.
There are no fleas and she is bathed frequently, since she insists on sleeping with me. But I have realized that every time she is fed Pedigree over a period of time, she gets this consistent itch. Naturally, now I have put her on home-cooked food. Since she's a fussy eater, I am afraid of all the information I have been reading about dry precooked food. I do not want to lose my pet and companion. I believe that Pedigree is not the quick option a pet lover must opt for.

We had 3 healthy dogs as of August 8th, 2013. A 7 year old sharpei mix, a 5 year old Australian cattle dog mix and a 3 year old Redbone Coonhound. All 3 dogs eat Pedigree Adult formula and as of August 10th, 2013 started eating Pedigree canned dog food labeled "choice cuts in gravy". As I write this today on September 2, 2013 we only have 1 dog still alive - our Redbone Coonhound. And we spent all day at the emergency vet with him yesterday. Our first dog to become ill was Delilah our 5 year old dog. In the very early hours on August 9th she woke us up whining and in obvious pain. All 3 dogs live in the house. By 8:00am Friday morning she was walking like she was drunk and would stumble and fall. We took her to the vet that day.
From what he could tell, she could possibly have had a ruptured disc in her back. He sent us home with muscle relaxers and steroids. She refused to eat the dry Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition that they have eaten all their lives, so we went to Publix and bought the Pedigree canned dog food called "choice cuts in gravy". By the next evening (after 2 feedings with the new food) she was paralyzed from the waist down and in a lot of pain, so we made the heartbreaking decision (along with the vet's advice) to put her down. We were devastated. Because we felt so badly for our other 2 dogs, we decided to "spoil" them by giving them the wet food twice a day as a treat. 2 weeks later our 7 year old dog began acting strangely (very lethargic and stumbling) on Saturday August 24th so we immediately took her to the vet.
They did complete bloodwork on her and told us to watch her over the weekend and he would call us on Monday to check in on her. 30 hours later we found our 7 year old dog Olivia dead in our hallway. Absolutely more than we could take. We were shocked and angry! What in the world could be happening??? Our vet had us check for any rat poison that could be around (there was none) any pesticides (there weren't any) and any other possible "poison" we could think of. NOTHING. It still never dawned on us that it might be the food. So once again, we went out of our way to spoil our last living dog Tazer by treating him to the wet food we still had left. Friday August 30th we even went back to Publix and bought another 12 pack of it.
Just like the other 2, on a Saturday he began to exhibit the same exact symptoms of lethargy and wooziness. We were in total panic. We went to a different vet this time, thinking the 1st one may have missed something and after a complete exam which included a urinalysis we still had no answers as to why he was sick. It was during this vet visit that we realized the wet food was the only link between these 3 dogs and the only "new" thing they were introduced to. We were sick to our stomachs. We asked the vet if this was possible and she told us we would need to have the food tested. I tried to call the Mars Company (that makes Pedigree) and their consumer division was closed for Labor Day weekend.
I am not only contacting them tomorrow, but also the FDA, Publix and an attorney. I am hopeful that our remaining dog Tazer will be ok. We stopped the Pedigree food immediately and bought another brand. He has more energy today which I pray means he is on his way to a full recovery. Our hearts are broken over the loss of Delilah and Olivia but it has also given me the fire needed to pursue this issue.

I have been feeding my 3 year old mini poodle Pedigree Puppy Complete Nutrition for 3 years. She has had two incidents, the first one was months ago but today August 31, 2013. She had passed her stool and then waited for me to clean her, but then I was terrified there was so much blood coming from her rectum. Cleaned her up, went to church and came home and she was just prancing, would not sit or lie down.
She ate nothing or drank nothing all day. My husband tried to give her the food and she got in her crate and he left the food on the floor in front of the crate. She didn't come out of crate until he removed the food from in front. So then he suggested giving her some treats and she ate them right away. Earlier during the day she was trying to eat the Pedigree (dry dog food) and she ate about 4 pieces and then she came running to me and stayed on my lap all night. She still has brown blood now, not bright red as at first but this isn't my dog not active, just lying and not curled up like usual on her stomach. It is Sunday and of course tomorrow is Labor Day so I can't take her to the vet until Tuesday which I hope it isn't too late.
From all that I have read on here I think a class action lawsuit should be started. I had a toy poodle die because of the recall on the dog food before (Wal-Mart brand), but it was too late for her she died in my arms. This time it shouldn't take so long for a lawsuit so that maybe some of our loving pets can survive and not suffer such a terrible death.

I bought a chihuahua puppy as a companion for my other chihuahua (Teddy) who is a picky eater. I bought her 3 weeks ago at the age of 3 months. She was a healthy pup with all her needles and vet card. I fed her on Pedigree puppy on the first day. By the second day... she showed signs of lethargy and weakness. I thought as a pup she was just tired. On the third day... I woke up to diarrhea on the floor and the pup soiled herself and she was laying in a puddle of it having a fit and twisting her neck and her back and shaking. I brought her to the vet straight away and he kept her in overnight and gave her steroids and antibiotics... which cost me 80 euro.
I went to the vet the next day to collect her and he told me he gave her a few pieces of dry food because she was starving... and the bag wasn't Pedigree. I collected her and she was doing well. I brought her home and gave her the Pedigree as the vet said she was hungry... and with two hours of that food she was back convulsing and crying and not able to walk and had diarrhea. I brought her back to the vet the next day and she was put down. I still didn't realize that it was the Pedigree. I was at the loss of 400 euro in total! BUT I still didn't learn...
I bought another chihuahua pup that looked similar to her... as my kids and I were so upset, we bought her and my mother in law bought her brother... who is on cheaper dog food and is 100 fit and healthy. HOWEVER the new pup that I have just under a week has been on Pedigree... and showed the very same symptoms as the first dog. I was shocked and so was the vet. I had to call him down on a Sunday which cost me 150 euro and he gave her antibiotics and steroids.
I then set on an internet mission to seek answers and came across this!!!! My second pup has now not had any Pedigree since I read this thread and was back at the vet today and got another dose of steroids to help her. I called Pedigree yesterday and received a call back today and someone was sent out to take a sample of the food she was eating to see if it was the food. She also told me that Pedigree is the highest quality dog food and is also fit for human consumption... to which I said she was paid to say that and she is more than welcome to come over and eat this bag of dog food.
My second pup is trying to stand today but she is still not able to really walk yet. I hope I stopped the Pedigree just in time. My other chihuahua is 2 years old and he will not eat Pedigree at all. He ate it once and then threw up all over the sofa! There is something in this "new improved" formula. These products need to be pulled before Any other tragedies occur!
The second picture is graphic as this is how she was found in her own diarrhea. RIP, Dolly.

I would like to take time to write a comment on this page in hopes that somebody else does not have to go through what my family is tonight. My wife and I had to make the tough choice of having to put our dog down tonight. The cause can only be linked back to one source, and after doing extensive research it is due to the Pedigree brand dog food. My Bull Mastiff was as healthy as could be on Thursday night when we ran out of their normal food. We feed Fromm Mature Adult on a normal basis. Living in a rural town in SW Missouri, we ran to our local grocery store and bought 1.5lb bag of food to feed until I could get their regular food when I was back in Springfield Friday. Stella (that was her name), ate one bowl of this food Thursday night.
I went to work on Friday and came home to a nasty mess of vomit that was the most rancid smelling thing I have ever smelt and seen. She proceeded to get sick a couple more times and was very worn out. We let her be to herself most of the evening except to take her out to use the restroom. Saturday morning came around and she was still sick and extremely exhausted. My family had a busy day of running and came home late in the afternoon to again find more vomit and gross mess. It was then that we called our vet and got her in last night. We started an IV, and gave her some stomach meds to help with the vomiting. He would continue to check on her through the night and call me today.
The call came this afternoon that she seemed to be steady but was still exhausted, and we determined that he would run some blood work to try and figure out what is going on with my dog. The doctor just called tonight and told me that she had began to have a bloody stool and whatever was going on was affecting her from the inside out, and we made the call to euthanize her and not allow her to suffer any longer. I am truly heartbroken tonight knowing that there is a company out there that will not take responsibility for their product. I hope that everyone that reads this realizes that the food we choose for our dogs is the same as that we feed our families. Please research what you feed and do not feed this crap in a yellow bag!!!!!

I was notified by someone about Pedigree Dry Food and it struck a chord with me because I had just stopped feeding my 3 dogs Pedigree canned food. The store was out of my usual brand so I bought 2 cases of canned Pedigree. I started feeding it to my dogs (2 Boston Terriers and one Jack Russell, Chihuahua mix) and within a day or two they started having bad diarrhea all over my house. I work and they are confined to a kitchen/family room and they NEVER have accidents, but this was horrible. It happened 4 days in a row and my male Boston would not eat it anymore, he would back away from the bowl when I gave it to him. Then it finally dawned on me that that this was different dog food and I stopped feeding it to them and the diarrhea quit too and my male Boston started eating again. Something is not right and I am stuck with 20 cans of this stuff.

I am soooo Glad my mom saw a post about this on Facebook. My sister has a 9 yr old beagle/basset hound and has always fed him Pedigree. She got a new bag about 3 weeks ago and the last 2 weeks her dog has been feeling ill, lethargic, barely eating, etc. I've just told her today about this as I just found out and she's at home cooking chicken and brown rice for him now hoping he'll eat and get better. Even worse, 2 weeks ago she came over with Dewey and brought some of his dry food and a can of real canned chicken to mix in since he hasn't been eating as well. He was not feeling well and did not eat it. But my 16 yr old cat did. This was a Sunday night/Mon morn, by Wednesday my cat would not eat or drink and she has hyperthyroidism and ALWAYS eats and ALWAYS drinks plenty of fresh water. Was getting concerned, but she's had little issues here before and there and didn't do normal stuff for a day or two in the past years.
By late Thursday evening (2-3 am) it had looked like she was poisoned and we were going to the vet at 7 am. I kept her comfortable a few hours and she died on the way to the vet. I thought maybe she was poisoned or her kidneys finally gave out. But the blood work from two weeks prior showed she was doing well. Then I hear about this and stumble on to this site. It all makes sense now. She ate that whole bowl of Pedigree that Sunday too. I know dog food is not great for cats, but she was needing to put weight on so I let her eat it. My heart is broken. But at least we know now and we are trying to save my sister's dog.

I quit buying Pedigree years ago. We had a cocker spaniel named Lady. We got her when she was 4 months old. She had been through 8 homes and no one wanted her. My heart just hurt for her because I could tell she had been abused.
I started feeding her Pedigree Dry a couple of years after we got her. One night she woke me up nudging my hand with her nose. I got up to let her out but noticed she was breathing strangely. I flipped the light and she was bleeding from her nose. I took her to the vet the next morning, but he said dogs sometimes get nosebleeds and it didn't mean much on it's own. The nose bleeds didn't stop though. Over the next 2 weeks they just seemed to get worse, and more frequent. The vet kept saying she was just one of those dogs that this happens with. She woke me up early one morning 14 days after these nose bleeds started. I knew something was wrong. I had to pick her up to take her outside, as she had been having bloody diarrhea during the night. She began vomiting up what looked like coffee grounds. I rushed her to a different vet, they did tests, and called to say her liver was not working and she should be put down. I went up to be with her, but she had died naturally before I got there.
The vet and I talked, about the previous visits to vets, and when her symptoms started. He asked me if there had been changes in her diet recently, and I mentioned the Pedigree. He told me to never feed my future pets with that food. Not Dry or Moist. Even 21 years ago, there were strong indications that Pedigree was responsible for many deaths or near deaths of dogs and cats.
