All of my claims were handled quickly and efficiently. There was not a single question on coverage. Minus the deductible (and minor items not covered) the full 80% payment was in my hands within 10 business days. Having insurance for our dear Loki made the decisions we made NOT about money but about the best care for him.

I would HIGHLY recommend Embrace Pet Insurance to anyone looking. I've been with 2 other Pet Insurance plans and thought I had the best there was. Boy was I wrong. I am paying 1/2 the price that I've paid with the others for my 7 year old boy. I was sooo flabbergasted by their rates, after signing up I had to call to make sure I wasn't missing something. They offer all that I had and MORE. People are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EMBRACE PET INSURANCE (10*) 10 STARS.

My 3 year old dachshund was acting a little oddly and we took her to the veterinarian. She was given medication. That night my pup starting having seizures and we rushed her to the emergency veterinarian. Sadly they were able to save my Zoe. When I called Embrace Insurance with bills and a question on how to submit them agent Brenna ** was very helpful and compassionate to my sorry. She was kind and sympathetic. Not only did she help with the bills which were fully covered, she refunded the remaining days on that months premium. And sent a very nice card. I will certainly continue my insurance with my other dog and when it is time and we get a new pet I'll add her to the insurance plan.

Signing up for Embrace over other options years ago is a great regret. The main issue so far has been the denial of a bunch of expenses because they were submitted (by the hospital, not my control) "too long" after a policy we've had for years has renewed. There is no logical reason for this. She's had continuous coverage for years. It was just an arbitrary cutoff based on when the policy renews for the year. We're not back at it as I've just discovered they will now be checking for any preexisting condition issues after allowing me to pay for years for my other dog.

Anyway, long story short -- and this may be true of the whole industry since it is basically the insurance business model to take in as many premiums and pay out as few claims as possible -- I have no doubt they will find ways to avoid pay claims if they can come up with anything or embed anything in the fine print or anything else. I'm not sure what else I can say other than that there is zero chance we'll sign up future dogs.

    Hello David,

Thank you for being a long-term policyholder, your support is appreciated. I am sorry we were unable to provide you with any benefit for the claims submitted by your veterinary clinic after the submission deadline; unfortunately, according to the policy terms and conditions, claims can be submitted any time during the policy term and up to 60 days after the policy term ends. The claims submission deadline information can be found on the claim form, in the policy terms and conditions, and in the pre-renewal email that is sent before your renewal occurs.

Regarding the pre-existing conditions and how to be notified about them, we offer a medical history review at the time of the policy start, which outlines any pre-existing conditions that will not be covered under the policy. If this optional review is not requested the review is then conducted at the time the first claim is submitted. In your case, a medical history review was not requested, so we did not review Klaus' medical records until his first claim was submitted, which was just recently. If you feel after the review was completed, we have any incorrect information, we would be happy to review an appeal from your veterinarian clarifying these notations.

If there is anything else we can assist you with, please do not hesitate to contact us at askclaims@embracepetinsurance.com.

Sham... Stay away. I would've expected better from USAA. Any excuse not to payout!!! I canceled my policy. They conflated Cushing's disease in my doggy as a preexisting disease due to the hepatic panel showing high enzymes 2-years prior - in which my doggy was treated. Cushing's is a kidney/adrenal gland issue...not (hepatic) fatty liver...as liver issues come later with the onset of Cushing's. That said, there were no indications/symptoms of Cushing's in my doggy prior to the policy nor in the in-between vet visits at Banfield over the last 8yrs...hence the emergency visit. Well...buyer beware.

    Hello Christopher,

I am sorry for your frustration, I understand it is disappointing when claims cannot be covered by a policy. Regarding your situation, I see that Skoshi had elevated liver values a few months prior to the start of the policy. These elevations are a common clinical sign of Cushing’s disease. Once Skoshi developed additional clinical signs of Cushing’s disease, it became apparent that the pre-existing elevated liver values were related. If you and your veterinarian disagree with this assessment, the next step is to open an appeal. You can submit a letter from your veterinarian with any additional information to askclaims@embracepetinsurance.com and an appeal will be set up on your behalf. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us at the same email address.

My faith in Embrace has been re-established! Thank you Embrace for overturning your decision on the pre-existing conditions. I had to reach out to multiple vets and have them clarify what was in the notes but in the end I am happy that my doggies medical needs will be taken care of. I still think this pet insurance company makes it very difficult if your pet has gone to the vet prior to coverage for anything, I don't know if others are the same but my hope is that what is considered a pre-existing condition isn't the same across the board. I have revised my star-rating from 1 to 4 stars, I would have liked to give 5 but all of the hoops I had to jump through made me dizzy.

    Original Review: May 21, 2021

I have a French bull dog that I acquired at the age of 9 months. When I took him in to be microchipped my vet asked me if I had noticed any breathing issues or snoring with him. I answered yes but not really being familiar with the breed and any issues that they have, I thought this was normal. She said there are surgeries to correct the issue so I followed through with 2 procedures. When I submitted these to Embrace I was told that they were denied due to a "pre-existing" condition they found in his medical history. The previous owner took him to their vet for vaccinations and the owner stated that he had been coughing, the vet documented an undiagnosed cough and no treatment was rendered.

Embrace based their decision on a 4 month old puppy with a cough, therefore calling this a pre-existing condition. It does take a rocket scientist to know that a cough can be caused by a number of things, I have been informed that I can appeal this decision and go to that vet (whom I do not use nor have ever used) for a letter with an explanation and maybe their decision will be overturned. Sounds like Embrace wants me to jump through hoops and wear me down so that I don't fight this. I am very disappointed and will pursue appealing the diagnoses. I will also notify USAA because I based my decision to go with Embrace because USAA backs/sponsors them and I trust USAA.

    Hello Jackie,

I am so sorry for your frustration regarding the pre-existing condition and claims for Winston. I see that Winston had some undiagnosed coughing noted in the medical records we received from a prior veterinarian. Under the Embrace policy, any condition that occurs prior to the end of the waiting period is pre-existing and includes conditions and clinical signs that are undiagnosed. While you are correct that coughing can be caused by a number of things, if we are unable to determine the specific cause of the cough, we must exclude any conditions that could be causing it.

As coughing is a clinical sign of brachycephalic airway syndrome (anatomic abnormalities of the nasal passages and throat) and because a definitive cause for the pre-existing coughing was not determined, we, unfortunately, were not able to cover Winston’s claims. I know this is not the news you had hoped for, but I do see you mentioned you decided to move forward with the appeal process, which we do recommend if you feel a decision error was made. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at askclaims@embracepetinsurance.com.

While I have given Pet Embrace 5 STARS IN THE PAST, I only had experience processing claims with their wellness claims. Now that I am over 1 year into the medical plan and am hitting a brick wall getting a medical claim paid because of Pet Embrace’s own incompetence and I am at their mercy to resolve it. HERE’S THE ISSUE:

Upon establishing the medical policy, there is a waiting period. You must submit a wellness exam establishing the health of your cat. They asked me where I planned to go. I adopted my two cats while caring for an ill parent in San Antonio, TX. I live Alaska. I said I would take them to the vet my Texas family used (Amigo Veterinary) but reconsidered after finding out they were ridiculously expensive. I took them to a local Spay Neuter clinic (SNAP) for vaccines, health exam and health certificate so they could fly home. I NOTIFIED PET EMBRACE OF THE CHANGE AND UPLOADED THE DOCUMENTS through their portal. They notified me the exam documentation was inadequate-that it needed to be in a SOAP format.

So, upon arriving back to Alaska, still within the waiting period, I took them to my vet, (VCA) for a second wellness exam and made sure my vet supplied documents in the appropriate format, I UPLOADED THE DOCUMENTS via their portal AND CONFIRMED I MET ALL THEIR REQUIREMENTS WITH A FOLLOW UP PHONE CALL. Now one year later when submitting a claim I am told my claim cannot be processed until they receive all notes from AMIGO VET CLINIC. What?! And somehow Amigo can’t cooperate or comply. I wonder why. Perhaps because they have no record of us, don’t know what it’s about??? Why is this even a problem??

Would you be surprised if you broke left arm and your medical insurance didn't cover it because you'd previously broken your right arm? Unrelated, right? That's exactly what Embrace did for orthopedic coverage for our dog. A previously repaired *injury* disqualifies our dog for coverage for the same or similar injuries in the other legs, despite a clean orthopedic exam by our veterinarian. Just another brazen attempt to collect premiums without ever having to pay out claims. Shameful.

    Response from Embrace Pet Insurance

    Hello David,

I'm sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with your Embrace policy. All pet insurance companies exclude pre-existing conditions; this is how pet insurance premiums stay around $50 a month rather than what premiums cost in human health insurance (around $500 a month). Cruciate ligament tears, as Allie had, are one of the most common orthopedic conditions in dogs. More than 50% of dogs that tear one cruciate ligament will tear the other one within 12 months. Unfortunately, this means insurance companies must exclude coverage for both knees if a pet was noted to have a tear prior to the start of the policy.

It is understandable that this is frustrating news; however, pet insurance companies must exclude pre-existing conditions in order to retain low monthly premiums for their pet parents.

I see that you already canceled your policy, if you would like any further assistance, do not hesitate to contact Embrace at 800-511-9172.

My experience with your company was terrible. All the people I spoke with were very pleasant. My vet recommended me not to take insurance on a 9 1/2 year old labradoodle, my dog is turning 11 in 2 weeks, but my husband wanted to be sure if she broke anything she would be covered. After a month of going back and forth with the insurance and the vet, a month before my dog needed to get a mass removed from her back... I finally got a list of her pre existing issues. There was everything on it except digestive issues. So I called and asked why someone did not call me to explain all of this. But every time you call they say you can’t be quoted on the phone. So basically they told me only digestive issues would be covered.

We should have been explained this from the day of getting the insurance and then I would not have wasted my money. My dog has arthritis so I asked if she breaks a bone will they say the arthritis already existed and this is what caused the break? I asked for it in writing but got nothing. It was stated at that point the doctor would have to determine that.. so basically they wanted me to pay my monthly payment and if it happens then they will let me know. I should have listened to my Vet when she said, "Don’t get it." So disappointed in the company. Asked to get money back, they said No.

    Hello Eleni,

I'm sorry to hear about your disappointing experience with Embrace. Given the nature of pet insurance, insuring older/senior pets can make for more exclusions and less available coverage. All pet insurance companies exclude pre-existing conditions; therefore, older pets tend to collect more pre-existing conditions if they are not insured until they are in their golden years. Pre-existing conditions are explained at the beginning of the policy and we always recommend that our pet parents request a medical history review, so they know exactly what would be excluded for their pet at the start of the policy. As you opted out of this service, Nikki's medical records were not reviewed until the time of her first claim.

I see that you spoke with an adjuster and discussed all of the pre-existing conditions and potential coverages and opted to cancel the policy. If there is anything else that can be done to assist in your situation, please do not hesitate to contact Embrace.

It’s very heartbreaking that Embrace denies a lot of claims when I’ve had a policy for many many many years and paid premiums to your company as a member. The lack of empathy for those affected by Covid-19 sheds a dark light on Embrace that the company cares more about profits than caring about the relationships and compassion with its long time members.

    Hello Ricky,

I see that you spoke to one of our Customer Service members on Tuesday and were given information regarding the claims submission deadline and the protocol to appeal this policy. I reviewed that call and it was left that we would open an appeal in your favor once you sent us the claims that were not submitted on time. I double-checked and we have not received those claims yet. As soon as we get the claims that are "late", we will proceed with the appeal as discussed. If you need any assistance in this process, do not hesitate to contact us at askclaims@embracepetinsurance.com.

I didn't even know you could buy pet insurance until I was sitting in a pet emergency department with my beloved German shepherd as we tried to save him. 3 hours later he passed and we had a $2,500 bill. I found a pamphlet in the emergency department about how affordable pet insurance was. We had spend hundreds of dollars/month on our pet for expensive treatments. If we had only known.

Soooo, when we rescued two beautiful Russian Blue kitties two years later, we began looking for pet insurance. We discovered Pet Embrace. We trusted them because USAA partnered with them. They have a great wellness program, which enabled us to budget out all the wellness care our kitties needed immediately; however, they ALSO have an outstanding affordable MEDICAL policy that covers illness and accidents. That really gave us peace of mind. Filing claims is so easy and streamlined through their online portal. Every time I have reached out to ask a question or file a claim I have spoke with a real, kind, human being with no language barriers and without ever being placed on hold and no phone trees. Their customer service is STELLAR. I wish I could give them 10 stars.

    Hello Denise,

I'm sorry to hear Nayla is not feeling well. I hope she on the mend quickly after her procedure. When we made the determination to cover 12-weeks of alternative therapy per condition, we consulted with several veterinary specialists. It was determined that most alternative therapies require 8-weeks to treat active conditions, after those initial 8-weeks, therapy is maintenance. As a courtesy to our pet parents, we opted to increase that to 12-weeks of coverage to provide the best possible coverage. Maintenance therapies are not eligible for coverage by the policy in accordance with the terms and conditions.

Embrace has gone downhill over the past year. My dog was insured at 2 months when I brought him home. He had his initial visit and had their orthopedic waiver completed. 10 months later he developed a luxating patella and had surgery. Embrace first delayed my claim by saying they reached out to my vets office for records when my vets office says otherwise. Embrace did not notify me of the delay, I noticed when I happened to check his account over a week later. I made sure they got the records and now I'm told it's a 30 business day wait to review.

He had ONE vet visit prior to surgery, clearly no prior history since he was two months old at the time on insuring, and their waiver was complete despite this condition happening past the time of the normal orthopedic waiting period. This should be an open and shut case. Instead, Embrace is finding every way to drag their feet. I now am looking at an account that's stating it's on hold for lack of medical information AGAIN. This company is finding every way to drag its feet. People shouldn't have to wait over two months for claims to get paid out.

    Hello Adriana,

I am sorry for your frustration getting Figment's recent claims processed. I see that we received the claim on 3/17/21, we requested the medical records required to process the claim on 3/29/21, and those records were received on 3/30/21. The medical records from Figment's vet will be reviewed today and the claim will be processed shortly after. First claims always take longer than subsequent claims because we have to collect and review medical records prior to processing. The good news is, Figment's claim will be processed in less than 20 business days, which is still quite fast.

I have two cats, one I adopted in 2017, and the other around Christmas of 2020. When I adopted my Tuxedo, I got her insurance with Healthy Paws, so that's who I had been with ever since. When it came time to adding the second cat to her account, things got complicated. Unfortunately, Leo came home and got ill about two weeks following. What was initially thought to be linked to gastroenterology issues wound up to be upper respiratory and he ended up having to be seen several times within a two month period. Needless to say, Healthy Paws denied his claims for pre-existing conditions.

I filed an appeal, but after it dragging out over a month and them then requiring additional documentation from his veterinarian interpreting his medical records, I had had enough at that point. I didn't even care about the thousand dollars in claims at that point, they had made my life ridiculously and unnecessarily stressful and I put an end to it. I walked away and canceled his policy with Healthy Paws and came over to Embrace.

I had been looking into Embrace and a few other companies a few weeks prior just so I was prepared if that time came. Ultimately I chose Embrace because of the consistency of their reviews (because I don't expect any company to be perfect), the quantity of their exceptional reviews, but mostly my own personal customer service experience. I spent at least an hour over two or three phone calls with customer service getting information and eventually setting up a policy. Not once did I have any reason to question why I wouldn't want to trust them to insure the well-being of my pets.

I actually was excited I had found them - it made the Healthy Paws experience a whole lot less bitter. I was met with kindness, compassion, friendliness, and consideration. Customer service was prompt and patient and never left any of my many questions unanswered. They also spent a great deal of time helping me to find the most appropriate policy for my needs and budget and offered considerable discounts. I only wish it were convenient for me to bring my other cat over right now, unfortunately because of her health issues at the moment, it'll have to wait a bit. Looking forward to a new beginning with Embrace!

After getting a new puppy in February 2020 we decided to purchase pet insurance. We decided on Embrace because what we thought were good reviews. After waiting the required 30 days and getting our dog all the required shots and health checks everything seemed to be going well. On 2/4/21 we noticed her scratching her ears and took her in to her vet for evaluation. They advised she had a slight ear infection and gave her the prescribed antibiotics. She returned on 2/18/21 for a follow up. These invoices were sent to Embrace immediately. After many back and forth emails requesting information on the status (they advised they were awaiting information from her vet which was sent to them early March) they advised on 3/25/21 that the claims were denied because of "pre existing conditions".

Apparently when we first brought her to the vet for a check up on 2/26/20 we told them she seemed to be scratching too much. They advised she may have Pruritus but nothing to worry about. Somehow Embrace twisted this into a way to decline an inner ear infection. Complete waste of money. They took my 32 dollars each month for over a year and denied a very small new claim. Needless to say we will look for a better pet insurance from this point on.

    Hello Bryon,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience with Embrace. Sally's policy started on 3/21/20 and had the standard 2-day accident waiting period, 14-day illness waiting period, and 6-month orthopedic waiting period. This means that any abnormality noted in Sally's medical records prior to the start of the policy, or during the policy waiting periods is pre-existing; and therefore, excluded from coverage.

On 3/17/20, prior to the start of the policy, it was noted that Sally had been itchy (pruritus). As pruritus is a dermatological condition in accordance with the policy terms and conditions, it means Sally is excluded from coverage for any and all dermatological conditions for 12-months. Sally has not been free from dermatological conditions for 12 consecutive months; therefore, coverage for this condition is not possible.

I understand this is not the news you were hoping to hear; however, we must follow the policy terms and conditions. As the facts around the case are clear the Sally had a pre-existing dermatological exclusion on her policy, coverage for this condition (and any related conditions) is not possible until she is free from symptoms and treatment for 12 consecutive months.

(Pls choose your breed carefully.) They requested lots of health records during enrollment but they don't review your records until your first claim. Review process was very slow. They are expensive comparing to many other pet insurance.

    Hello Roanna,

When you signed up for your Embrace policy online you selected Yoyo's breed as a 'mixed breed' though Cavapoo is an option. We received medical history for Yoyo when you signed up, however, unless a pet parent requests a medical history review, the records are not reviewed until the first accident/illness claim. We reached out to you informing you of the option to have the records reviewed on 9/17/20 but the email went unanswered. As we reviewed the records with Yoyo's first illness claim for diarrhea, we noticed the breed was incorrect and reached out to you immediately.

I am sorry you found the customer service poor. Was there a specific example you were referring to? I see that you have both called and emailed us, and I do not see any issues you brought up that were not addressed. I can understand you are not pleased with the rate increase, however, the policy was started with the information you provided online.

I asked for a few days from the Monday it was due until Friday of the same week. They advised me of how my account was less than 6 months old and therefore, they couldn't do anything to help me but, to transfer me to the cancellation department to cancel my policy entirely. It makes more sense to them to lose you to PAWP than work with you to retain your ongoing premiums for years to come. With such a solid business model, It's no wonder why they are the #4 pet insurance provider in the country.

Non-chronic pre-existing conditions require year long waiting period before they will be covered. That's somewhat reasonable. Here is the unreasonable part: it resets for a whole year if the condition occurs. Simple things like diarrhea, pink eye, vomiting. These are things that can have many causes. But if my dog is treated for any of these within a year of the occurrences the predated the policy, I have to wait another whole year. This is a bad value.

    Hello Blake,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience with Embrace. You are correct in your assessment of temporary exclusions. A pet does need to remain clear from clinical signs or treatment for a condition for 12-consecutive months in order for the policy to cover that condition. If the clinical signs recur; unfortunately, that is not remaining clear for 12 months. In these cases, the expiration date does get pushed out 12 months from the most recent occurrence or treatment. Once a pet goes 12-months without treatment or clinical signs, the temporary condition is then eligible for coverage.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience with Embrace. I looked into your policy and confirmed you submitted two total claims, both were for Ilo. The total amount you paid for the claims was $434.54 and Embrace covered $358.04. Ilo was a senior dog when you purchased his policy, so he does have a couple of pre-existing conditions; however, these pre-existing conditions excluded only a very small portion of the two claims you submitted. Recently he had complications from a surgery to remove a benign fatty lump. It was so easy to submit my claims online (just submitted the invoices) and I was reimbursed. I've never met the deductible before, so this was the first time I submitted a claim. Also, I've had to change debit cars twice, and they helped me do that as well. Customer service is so kind and caring. Finally, I am veterinarian (but I currently don't work or own a practice) so I really knew how to do my research and pick my company based on my customers' experiences at the time. No looking back, this company is great from head to toe. I got a high deductible to cover something dramatic, and when something dramatic did unfortunately occur, they were there for me.

    Hello Darren,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience with Embrace. I took some time to look over your policy and hope to be able to clarify a couple of points. Unfortunately, Brinkley was noted to be vomiting prior to the start of the policy. At that time, no cause for the vomiting was identified. This makes vomiting an exclusion on the policy for 12-months. Before the vomiting exclusion was able to be expired, Brinkley presented again with vomiting. There was no definitive cause for the recent bout of vomiting; therefore, it was not eligible for coverage.

I see you went through the appeal process and the decision to not cover the recent vomiting was not overturned. In the appeal process, we review all the medical records on hand, as well as any additional information provided by you or your veterinarian. We are very careful to make sure the decision on the claim is accurate. Brinkley's illness claim was partially covered and reimbursed for the treatments that were eligible for coverage. I am sorry we were unable to provide full coverage; however, we are bound by the policy terms and conditions and unable to cover pre-existing conditions.

If there is anything else you'd like to discuss, feel free to contact me directly.

Hs I finally got the so called list of conditions - conveniently long after my eligibility for a refund. This "list" mind you exists nowhere but online. It is not part of your policy declaration, nor is it anywhere in writing. WHY? So EMBRACE can have that be an ever changing fluid list. What they proudly claim to be the ability to have "temporary" conditions which may be removed from the "list", actually will only be perpetually moved forward by date and they will never expire. Every word I have read of these 1-4 ratings is 100% true and I am suspicious the positive ones were written by EMBRACE employees or those people must be special in some way. My own daughter has an EMBRACE policy and gets the same treatment I do.

A "skin mass" exclusion is attempted to be used to deny claims for an adrenal tumor. As far as I know, and I am but a lowly RN, a dog's adrenal gland lies deep within the abdomen and not on the skin. A "proteinuria" exclusion is attempted to deny claim for a routine urine culture as part of an internal medicine exam - cultures do not determine level of protein of urine. If no protein level is listed how can it be excluded for proteinuria? My daughter's dog's ear itched during an ear infection. Yep, itching is "pre-existing." With EMBRACE, any policyholder should hope their dog doesn't poot or it will probably be an exclusion for any cancer.

I've never seen such blatant fraud. Why do I stay you may ask. I am stuck. I changed with the promise of great coverage at a lower premium. LOL. If I don't fight tooth and nail with every claim, the policy is worthless. If I go back to Nationwide, guess what? Everything she ever had - even if covered by Nationwide themselves before is pre-existing. Further, she can't go back to Nationwide. They won't take those 12 and older.. Pet insurance at this time is "property insurance". Like a cow on a farm.

    Hello Ms. Simpson,

I’m sorry to hear you are not happy with the coverage. I would just like to say that when a 12-year-old dog is insured, it’s pretty common to find some pre-existing things in its medical history. A 12-year-old dog is like an 84-year-old person if you use the standard 7-year calculation. Twelve-year-old dogs have lived long lives and it’s normal for a few things to be pre-existing at that point. Your Grace had a few things happen to her before she was insured with Embrace, including surgery for a cruciate tear, crystals and protein in the urine, and a recessed vulva, which can contribute to urinary infections (the reason the urine culture wasn’t covered). No pet insurance policy covers pre-existing conditions, that’s just a fact. Another fact is that you have had a policy since 11/22/19 and since that time, Embrace has covered $2,846.99 of charges for Grace. I, personally, don’t think that kind of coverage is too shabby for a 2-year-old policy that was started on a 12-year-old dog.

I understand pre-existing conditions can be frustrating especially for senior pets; however, this is the nature of pet insurance.

It seems like I have the same experience with this insurance like a lot of people here. I purchase this insurance for my cat, this is the first time that I purchase a pet insurance and I chose Embrace because I read very good reviews about it. They said that there was a waiting period of 14 days, and for me it was ok because my cat has been always healthy. On December 27, 2 days after the waiting period ended, my cat became very sick, and I thought that he was going to die. I took him to an 24 hour animal hospital, and after some exams, they didn’t find any serious condition. They prescribed some medication and I took him home. Thank God my cat recovered after some days. Until now I still don't know what made him so sick.

I asked the hospital to submit a claim to the insurance (because I didn't even know how to do it), and after a few days Embrace asked me for his medical history for the previous 12 months, which I had already summited; and put my claim on hold (I didn't even understand why). On the past 12 months, I had only took him to the vet once for a routine exam, vaccines and deworming, so that was all that I had.

After I summited his medical history and all the documents I got from the hospital on the day he got sick, I asked them to let me know me if my cat was covered or not, because I felt like I was paying for nothing. And if he is not covered, I would ask for a refund. On the last email I received on 01/20/21 (a robotic one like all of them) they said that it will take 30 BUSINESS days to review his medical history. Is this a joke? 30 business days?? And in the meantime I'm still paying for an insurance that seems like will not cover my cat. If they think that my cat should not be covered, then that's fine for me, I can look for another insurance company. But don't make me waste my time and money for nothing. I had enough with my cat been so sick and then had to deal with this, I just want this to be over. And next time I get a pet insurance, I will make sure that my cat is covered before I pay a penny. Lesson learned.

    Hello Andrea,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your valuable feedback. Every policy with Embrace requires an exam with a veterinarian to take place either during the 12 months prior to the policy purchase, or within the 14-day waiting period, which you had mentioned. When you sign up for a policy, the terms and conditions and policy requirements are e-mailed to you. Once the 14-day illness waiting period has ended, we offer you the option to have a medical history review, in which we note any pre-existing conditions, should your pet have any. Unfortunately for Chiki, we have not received any pre-policy records at this time despite reaching out to your prior veterinarians. Without pre-policy records, we are unable to move forward with claims. I do see that we reached out to you regarding this issue on 1/27/2020 and have yet to hear back.

Please respond to that email and we can get Chiki's claim processed right away.

This company is horrible! They claim to "We care more so you can worry less".... That is complete crap! I had submitted claims for both of my dogs and I have never had to fight more to get a resolution! After fighting for months my one puppy's claim was "partially covered" because she had pre-existing conditions! The pre-existing condition was she was a puppy (6 months old) and vomited due to eating too quickly! So when I submitted a claim because my puppy accidentally got hold of a bag of chlorine and had ingested some, naturally she vomited! Now this company claims they won't cover the claim fully due to she has vomited once before! Then if that wasn't enough my second dog who was about 8 years old unfortunately and unexpectedly had to be put down due to a splenic mass that had her internally bleeding and according to my vet only a 10% chance of surviving an operation to remove it, if she even made it into surgery!

So I submitted the claim for my loved dog being put to sleep and now this company is denying the claim all together because my dog about a year prior was noted by the vet to have a skin tag (mass) smaller than the size of a dime on her leg! This company had talked to my vet about the skin tag (mass) in relation to the splenic mass tumor and my vet said the two conditions are "completely unrelated!" But nope this company who "cares more so we worry less" still denied the claim and has dragged out the processes of closing these claims therefore delaying my family's grieving process because every week for months we have been on the phone arguing with the company! Please please do not waste your money and time dealing with this company! They will only aggravate you more and come up with every excuse to not pay back any of your claims! You will be paying for a service you will not get!

    Hello Amy,

I'm sorry for your loss and any disappointment in the claims process. We try to be as upfront as possible about what is considered a pre-existing condition and why, in both the terms and conditions as well as initial onboarding emails. We offer a medical history review at the beginning of the policy as a courtesy as well- we understand that no one likes surprises.

While a symptom such as vomiting can be common, it is considered a pre-existing condition until the pet is symptom-free for 12 consecutive months. This is because if vomiting happens frequently, it can be a sign of a more serious underlying illness. But once the pet is symptom-free for a year, which we confirm with updated medical records, we can expire the eligible symptom.

For masses, we can narrow these down with a biopsy. If no biopsy is completed by the vet, we would have to exclude all masses. Biopsies are helpful because if the vet can confirm what type of mass the pet has, we would only disqualify that type of mass (skin tag, fatty tissue, etc.). I know this may not alleviate your dissatisfaction, but I hope it helps clarify the claim outcome. Please reach out if you have additional questions or concerns.

    Take care,

    Rachel

    Hello Sara,

I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback about your experience with Embrace. I am sorry that we have not lived up to your expectations. I see that you did go through the appeal process with some of Bear's claims and received a favorable outcome. In fact, Embrace has paid over $1,400.00 in reimbursement towards his medical expenses.

You are correct, pet insurance, including Embrace, does not cover preventative and routine care. Insurance is only able to cover unexpected and unintended illnesses or injuries.

Regarding the premium increase, we do send an email a month before your policy is set to renew with all the information regarding the upcoming renewal and any changes to the premium. This email was sent to you on 11/28/20. We work very hard to make sure we are charging a very fair price for pet insurance and only make changes to the policy premium when the market and the age of the pet indicate it is necessary.

I hope this helps to clarify some of your frustrations. If you would like to discuss anything directly, you are welcome to email me at reh@embracepetinsurance.com.

I also recently received notice that our premium will be going up significantly for the next year, which I assume is in response to the fact that we filed a claim, even though they have not paid the claim.

    Hello Elizabeth,

I am sorry for the delay in processing Alexa's recent claim. We are experiencing a higher-than-normal claim volume and we are combating Covid-19 staffing issues. We are working very hard to make sure we get claims processed as quickly as possible. I took a look at Alexa's policy and it looks like the medical records were reviewed and the claim was processed and covered.

Regarding a change in premium, we do not change annual premium based on claim history. The premium can go up as pets age, elevated veterinary costs as a whole, and other general factors, but never related to individual claim behavior. We do offer a healthy pet deductible reward though; each year you have your policy without a claim, we reduce your annual deductible by $50.00.

I hope this helps alleviate some of your concerns with Embrace.

    Take care,

    Rachel

I like how easy it is for submit a claim. I dislike that almost every time I submit a claim I get a message in my portal saying they don't have enough info to process my claim and that Embrace requested additional info from my vet. I usually wait a couple days to see if the docs arrived before I email Embrace to ask what docs they need so I can request them myself and get a speedier resolution of my claim. I have NEVER received a message back from Embrace about what extra docs they need from the vet. I ALWAYS end up calling Embrace and speaking with a rep who suddenly doesn't need additional docs and processes my claim immediately. Always feels like Embrace is delaying processing and hopes I'll just forget. I appreciate the reps on the phone for immediately resolving my claims since the online department apparently never can without a phone call from me.

    Hello Brazil,

Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback. I'm sorry to hear your claims process has not been as positive as we intend. Some of the hold up on your claims was due to the fact it was the first illness claim on the policy. In order to process the first illness claim, we must collect and review medical records for 12-months prior to the start of the policy. This process takes quite a bit of time, so first claims often take significantly longer than subsequent claims. If you would like to speed up the first claim process, you can request a medical history review for Guinness. You can email us at askclaims@embracepetinsurance.com if this is something you are interested in.

Additionally, to ensure that a claim is processed as quickly as possible it must contain a detailed invoice (including all pages and the total) in addition to a claim form with specific details regarding the claim. The diagnosis (what is provided on the claim form) tells us how to process a claim and if it is eligible for coverage, so we need as much detail as possible in this area. If a diagnosis is very brief (i.e. "medication" or "dental") we need to get additional information in order to process the claim, which can delay processing time.

I am glad to hear you have had a good experience with our Customer Service team, I hope your future claims experience is better.

    Take care,

I don’t it doesn’t make sense that I would purchase the policy and bring the puppy on the same day. When my other dog broke his hind leg due to cancer they said it was orthopedic, therefore NOT Covered, I put him to sleep regardless a 260 pound dog whose rear paw breaks from a cancerous tumor that I had no idea was there. Cannot live a good life on 3 legs and would have passed from the cancer within 3 months. Don’t recommend. Now I am stuck with a company that doesn’t pay. Also their deductible is not prorated. I paid 1,000 deductible for 6 months. When purchasing the policy I asked for 2 separate policies for each dog they said NO. Everyone raves about Nationwide. I should have went with them.

    Hello Nancy,

I would first like to reach out and say how sorry I am to hear of the passing of Luka. It is always difficult to lose a loved one. I took a quick peek at his policy and it looks like unfortunately the osteosarcoma was found within the 6-month orthopedic policy waiting period. Per the terms and conditions of the policy, clinical signs, or a diagnosis of osteosarcoma during this waiting period is unable to be covered. We do offer to shorten this waiting period if you have an orthopedic exam done with a corresponding report card filled out, but this was not done in Luka’s case. Again, I am truly sorry for your loss.

As far as Elsa is concerned, once her policy was purchased, she then had a 2-day accident waiting period, a 14-day illness waiting period, and a 6-month orthopedic waiting period. Anything within the 12 months prior to the policy purchase or through these waiting periods can be an exclusion on the policy. Elsa was noted to have urinary problems the day before the policy took effect, so this was made a temporary exclusion on her policy. She will need to go 12-months without related signs, symptoms, and/or treatments before the exclusion can possibly be expired. Since her recent claims were related, we were unable to provide coverage on the claims. I see you have requested to have one of her claims reviewed again. We have not received the additional medical history yet but will reopen the claim as soon as it is received. Although we were unable to cover the recent claims, you took the right step in purchasing pet insurance early for Elsa. She still has a large amount of coverage available to her for future issues that may arise not related to this temporary exclusion. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    Warm regards,

    Rachel

Embrace Pet Insurance has far outshone any pet insurance product I’ve ever had. They insured my cat who, ultimately & sadly, had two different forms of cancer over the course of three years. Embrace paid every single claim for his NYC pricey treatment from biopsies to surgeries to specialty medications. I repeat; they never challenged one claim.

Equally important, Embrace does not pay based upon national norms; they understand that different areas in the US are more or less expensive than others and reimburse based upon the billed amount. I’ve had policies with other companies and that has never been my experience. With them, I would receive a fraction of the cost of the service; with Embrace, I received back 80% of the actual charge. I had direct deposit; I would submit the claim or it would be submitted by the veterinarian and approximately two weeks later the money would reliably appear in my bank account.

They did not fail to renew my policy because he was ill or aged; he renewed until he passed at age 14. Further, they have a service where you can consult a vet online with any questions which was valuable to me and is extremely valuable during this Pandemic. Equally important, these people truly care about animals and about customer service. Since my cat was such a high consumer of health care, I would often call to get a benefit determination for some new service and they were always patient, thorough and knowledgeable. After a short while, they knew exactly who I was and would ask how he was doing every contact. When they learned he had passed, I received a Sympathy Card which included a link to an Online Memorial for him. I can’t say enough good things about Embrace. I will never insure any of my pets with any other pet insurer again.

    Hello Eric,

I’m very sorry to hear your experience with Embrace has not been satisfactory so far. Every policy that is purchased must have a medical history review consisting of the 12-months prior to the policy purchase and through the waiting periods before claims can be processed. I took a look at Ruckus’s policy and unfortunately he did have a few clinical signs noted prior to the policy purchase in his medical history. These are temporary exclusions on his policy and he must go 12-months without further related clinical signs, symptoms, or treatments before the exclusions can be expired. Since his recent claims were related to the policy exclusions we were unable to provide coverage in those instances.

I realize this is not the answer you were hoping for and I see you were asking about appealing the initial coverage decision on these claims. If you would still like to pursue this, please have your veterinarian send us a letter and the Chief Underwriter will review everything again. Even though we were not able to help Ruckus with these recent claims, he still has a large amount of coverage available to him for instances not related to the pre-existing exclusions. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    Original Review: Aug. 26, 2020

I signed up with Embrace 2 years ago for both my dogs through my USAA insurance, I figured hey, my trusted USAA trusts them so they should be trustworthy right? BIG WRONG! My prior experience with Embrace Wellness portion was great, easy peasy! And now when I need to use the accidental portion of my coverage, I’m totally being shafted. My dog tore her ACL ON 7/13, we had surgery 8/3. I submitted my claim And jump through hoops playing middle man and satisfying all embrace’s request to get all medical records of the 5 years of my Pomeranian, Daphne’s, life... being military and moving a lot, it’s no easy feat. Apparently my current vet’s medical records are not detailed enough for Embrace, which my vet's office has explained to embrace is all they Have/use.

As a result embrace is now calling Daphne’s waiting period (since they don’t approve of my vet’s files) effective on 7/13, which means they’re now calling her ACL issue a pre-existing condition and will NOT cover it! Keep in mind I have been a client of embrace since 8/2018 and my dog has been seen for checkups in this time And prior with no issues during these 2 years, we’ve never heard of any patella/ACL issues in her until 7/13/20, which is 100% evident in all her records! The email from my adjuster states the below word for word, which shows what they are putting me through is not required or part of their processes. They honestly do NOT want to pay for my $1500 claim and I’m so upset over this, these situations are why I purchased this insurance! And when I needed embrace as a loyal, honest customer, this is what I get, hell.

In conclusion, I hope to edit my review with a positive outcome in this as I have been fighting for 3 weeks now (I have to call almost daily as embrace does not keep you in the loop at all) and my vet is doing what she can to help me. If embrace can get it together I may continue to be a customer, if not, I’m out and will share my experience any and everywhere I can... including USAA. Adjuster email states, none of which apply to me: ‘We routinely do these reviews only upon request, but in some cases a Customer Care Embracer may request we do a pre-emptive review if a pet parent mentions in the course of a conversation a possible pre-existing condition that could greatly impact their coverage or if an Administrator notes lengthy medical history or visits to veterinary specialists in your pet's past.‘

    Hello Prince,

I'm sorry to hear you have had a disappointing experience with Embrace. I took a look at Akuma's policy and it looks he was first noted to have pustular dermatitis on 1/18/20, prior to the start of the policy. As this is a dermatological condition (according to the policy terms and conditions), it means all dermatological conditions are excluded for 12 months. Akuma was noted to have dermatological conditions again in April, May, and ultimately diagnosed with allergies in June. As Akuma did not go 12 months before being diagnosed with chronic allergies, dermatological conditions are permanently excluded. I understand this is disappointing, but all pet insurance companies exclude pre-existing conditions, like Akuma's allergies.

Regarding the claim for his toe injury, this condition was covered. We do not relate injuries like this one to his dermatological exclusion and it was therefore covered.

I hope this helps to clarify both the exclusion on Akuma's policy as well as the coverage on his claims. If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

At the time of application, the company reviewed vet notes for previous 12 months. Those notes reflected one instance of vomiting and two instances of abnormal lab results. The only definitive diagnosis of a specific illness was a possible urinary tract infection. The company implicitly advised it would not cover any future illness that occurred within 12 months of the above findings if any of those findings reappeared in the future, unless it was proven the finding was unrelated to the new illness. It appeared to me that if my pet vomited again within 12 months and if that turned out to be a symptom of any illness whatsoever, there would be no coverage. My conclusion was that the company would be providing accident insurance only -- no illness coverage.

    Hello Kenneth,

I am sorry to hear you are not happy with Jenna's coverage through Embrace. At the moment, there is not a pet insurance company in the United States that covers pre-existing conditions. While we have the right to request all pre-policy medical history for a pet, we only ask for the past 12 months. When we reviewed Jenna's records, there were a few issues noted by your veterinary staff, some on the very day you purchased the policy. Jenna's pre-existing conditions were considered temporary, meaning if she did not show signs of related issues, these conditions could 'expire' and be removed from her policy moving forward. In the meantime, we could cover any claim unrelated to the conditions noted in her history, but I see that you have cancelled your policy for Jenna.

    Hello Dave,

Toby’s medical records for his December 22, 2019 visit assess his symptoms as ‘Suspect IVDD Class 1’. This visit took place during his orthopedic waiting period; therefore, the symptoms mentioned are pre-existing conditions. Toby’s April and May 2020 intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) claims were not covered as they could be related to the initial diagnosis and symptoms listed in December 2019.

As you disagree with this decision, we have opened a first and now a second appeal for your claims. We are currently working on the second appeal for Toby’s claims.

The original claim form for Toby’s December 20, 2019 visit simply stated ‘shivering and panting’, which are symptoms of pain and could be related to IVDD. Therefore, the claim was initially not covered. You later informed your veterinarian about a scorpion found in Toby’s kennel. The claim decision was overturned based on this discovery even though the information was not verified by an exam. We do not make judgements based on ‘anything’ a pet parent tells their veterinary staff as we are not present to hear it, but we do have to take the medical records provided to us at their word.

Your second appeal is being processed. You will hear from us once the decision has been made.

    Sincerely,

    Chrystal

At this time your vet discussed that the crepitus was possibly cased by a cruciate injury with secondary degenerative joint disease (DJD). The policy terms and conditions are clear that this crepitus and possible cruciate injury are pre-existing conditions, as it was noted prior to the start of the policy. In addition to the right cruciate injury being excluded, as it was first noted prior to the start of the policy, this exclusion is a bilateral exclusion, meaning the left knee is excluded as well. This is explained in the policy terms and conditions.

I'm sorry that this was not the news you were hoping to receive. If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

My policy premium has increased 30% year over year over the last 3 years, with absolutely no changes to the policy and no claims, because my dog (who is only 3) is perfectly healthy. That means year 1 was $454, year 2 was $590, year 3 was $767. They’ve been insuring my healthy puppy since he was less than a year old and he’s now 3, again - perfectly healthy. How does a puppy have an insurance bill skyrocket from $454 to $767 between 2017 and 2020? Buyer beware, if you aren’t expecting a 30% rate increase year over year, you might get the same gut punch I did at renewal. By next year, a 30% rate increase will take me to a $1000/year premium, with a young 4 year old dog...how does that make sense?

    Response from Embrace Pet Insurance

    Hello Richard,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on Embrace. I certainly agree with you that premium increases are not the best part of insurance. Premiums may increase at renewal for a pet's age, veterinary cost inflation, and other actuarial changes. For these same reasons, sometime people see a decrease in premiums. Premiums increase on an average of 25-35% across all our policies. I know this is frustrating, but it is a necessary part of insurance.

If there is anything else I can do, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for choosing Embrace.

    Hello Stefan,

I'm sorry for the disappointing results of Nigel's medical history review and recent claim. I looked over the medical records and on 7/23/19, your vet noted, "occasional diarrhea but client switches diet often". When Nigel was seen again on 2/18/20 for gastroenteritis, it was noted that day that his clinical signs could have been caused by his recent diet change. Unfortunately, since diet change gastroenteritis is a pre-existing condition on his policy, it is not eligible for coverage. If Nigel goes 12 months without any clinical signs or treatment for diet change gastroenteritis, this condition will become eligible for coverage.

My dog was treated for one hotspot before coverage. Embrace excludes my dog for dermatological issues for a year. I think that is unfair! My vet originally diagnosed my dog with a heart murmur that both my vet and an ASPCA vet says is clear now. Embrace has excluded all heart problems for as long

as insured. I think both of these exclusions are not consistent with a reputable insurance company. I am a Attorney, I deal with insurance companies daily. I am very disappointed.

    Hello Jeffrey,

Thank you for taking the time to review Embrace Pet Insurance, we value all our pet parent's feedback. I took a look at Charlie's medical history review and wanted to clarify a few things. Regarding the dermatological exclusion, Charlie was treated for more than one occurrence of a dermatological condition (as defined by the policy definitions) prior to the start of the policy. The exclusion is currently listed as temporary and is set to expire 12-months from the most recent occurrence.

As for the heart murmur, we only have medical records from one veterinary hospital. If there are medical records that we are missing from an ASPCA veterinarian, please have those records sent in to claims@embracepetinsurance.com. I do see that Charlie was recommended to see a cardiologist back in 2017, if he was evaluated by a cardiologist at the time, we can review those records as well to determine if the heart murmur exclusion can be updated or narrowed in any way.

I am sorry that you are disappointed with the exclusions listed on Charlie's medical history review. We do take care to follow our policy terms and conditions when it comes to determining exclusions.

    Hello Linda,

Thank you for taking the time to provide open and honest feedback, I really appreciate when pet parents take the time to evaluate their experience with Embrace. I took a look into your policy and investigated why Lance's claim took so long to be processed. It looks like this claim was his first claim, so we did have to request and review all of his medical records from prior to the start of the policy. It looks like the hang up was getting medical records from one of the hospitals he visited prior to the start of the policy. We didn't get records from that hospital until 1/2/20. These records were reviewed on 1/15/20 and the claim was processed and paid out on the same date (1/15/20). Although this was nearly two months from the time the claim was submitted, we were actively working on collecting and reviewing Lance's records that whole time. The good news is now that Lance's medical history review is complete, future claims should be processed much faster!

I see that you were in contact with one of our customer service representatives regarding Lance's breed. I think that was the majority of the back and forth contact and it looks to be resolved now. If there is anything else I can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at reh@embracepetinsurance.com.

    Hi Rhonda,

Zoey has had a long history of entropion, a condition known to cause corneal lacerations and ulcers. Because this is a pre-existing condition, we cannot cover anything that might possibly be related to it. Since the medical records do not say that this incident was specifically related to trauma, (they said it was due to either trauma or "eyelid position", which is entropion), we are unable to cover it.

I do see that we've covered $8,210.78 in claims for you over the years, and entropion is the only pre-existing condition that Zoey has, which means we will cover just about everything that comes up going forward.

    Hello Sanford,

I took some time to investigate your policy and I see that we have not done a medical history review for either of your insured pets. A medical history review is the only way to know exactly what is pre-existing and excluded from your policy. I believe we are still missing some of the medical records, but I will try to get everything as soon as possible and complete both of their medical history reviews. Once you receive the results of the medical history review, if you do not agree with what is pre-existing, please let me know. The medical history reviews will be sent from my email, so you can respond if you disagree or have any questions.

I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback, I hope after the medical history reviews are complete, you'll have a better understanding of what is pre-existing for both your pets and how those exclusions may affect your coverage.

Have used Embrace Insurance for my Lab X Weim mix for years and added my wife’s cat when we got married and a puppy this year. The value is solid, the service is simple to use, the communication is great. The ability to customize your policy depending on your specific needs and budget is great. This past year the cat and older dog had a little more vet action than previous years and it was well worth the money spent during healthier years (which we got a credit for with the older dog!) to know they’d cover the other steep emergency charges— and they did. :) Reimbursement is issued promptly and it’s always easy to get in touch with a representative. It’s great knowing we can make the right call in an emergency with our pets without having to take finances into account as part of those decisions. Great business, great product.

Being a senior she has arthritis and also diagnosed with Cushing's disease so has periodic testing and monthly meds. Also unfortunately, she has had 2 surgeries to remove foreign objects she ingested. Let me say that the peace of mind knowing that we are 90% of meds/procedure costs back is priceless for our 4 legged family member. I simply have provided the claim form to the Vet and they handle everything for me.

I have had zero issues with any claim and with direct deposit it is sent within days. If you have an awesome Vet staff who can handle the claims then I would imagine you can expect the same experience from Embrace that I have had. When I spoke to the sales rep he explained about pre-existing conditions and I explained I had recently adopted my dogs and I was not aware of their health. Needless to say I filed a claim and waited two month to get a determination of my claim. Additionally, my eight year old dog was evaluated as having lung problems because I mentioned to the doctor during one of my walks I thought I heard her wheezing. The vet never heard wheezing but because I mentioned it during her routine check up, she was classified as having a pre-existing condition. Now I wonder if it would be better to set the money aside and not pay for the insurance.

My puppy had an upset tummy from some food we had her on and the vet said to just switch the food. She's been fine ever since. BUT, the Embrace Claims Adjuster is treating diarrhea in the broadest sense as a pre-existing condition FOR A YEAR!!! This is so ridiculous. I asked if I could have the vet give her a clean bill of health or if the claims adjuster could be reasonable. No dice. Once you can bill, it's fairly straight forward. Just get your furry friend covered right away though because they'll try to get out of paying for as much as they can.

    Hello Andrew,

Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback. I'm sorry it felt like we were putting you through unnecessary hoops, we try to make out onboarding process as simple and streamlined as possible, but it does include a few requirements. The most time consuming part of the claims process is collecting and reviewing all of a pet's medical records. The good news is this usually only has to happen before the first illness claim is processed; subsequent claims are processed much faster.

I agree with your statement about getting you pet insured right away, that is always what we recommend as well. The younger a pet is, usually means less pre-existing conditions. Last year we covered 96%of all claims, so we always try to cover as much as possible.

    Hello Javier,

I'm sorry for the frustrating experience you've had with Embrace. I took a look at Lola's policy and the hold up is not her pre-adoption medical records, but rather her medical records from your vet; Del Paso Veterinary Clinic. In order to process her pending claim, we need all her medical records from prior to the start of the policy or in the policy waiting period. It is a requirement of the policy that you have your pet examined by a veterinarian either before the start of the policy or in the first 14 days. It would be really helpful for you to reach out to Del Paso Veterinary Clinic and ask them to send all of Lola's detailed medical records to us. Records can be sent either directly to me at reh@embracepetinsurance.com or faxed to 800-238-1042. As soon as I get the missing medical records, I can complete her medical history review and process the claim.

I am hopeful we can get this resolved right away if I can get a copy of her medical records.

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, hopefully this helps to clarify what is missing and what is needed.

    Response from Embrace Pet Insurance

    Hello Donald,

I'm sorry to hear you unhappy with your Embrace experience regarding premium increases. I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback, we're always looking for ways to improve for our pet parents.

In regards to the policy premium, our policies can increase at renewal each year, and the main factors that go into the pricing are the age and breed of your pet, and claims data based on region, pet factors, and policy factors. We will never adjust your premium according to your specific claims. We always try to temper increases by requesting a rate cap through each state's department of insurance, but premium increases are necessary to continue paying the 96% of claims that we have been.

We can always adjust coverage levels so you have a premium within your budget while still having all the same benefits. Even increasing the deductible by $100 can make a difference, and with our Healthy Pet Deductible credit for each healthy year, sometimes that can negate the increase. We also don't increase if we don't have to, we see some policies decrease based on the same actuarial information that we get each year.

I know this isn't what you were hoping to hear, but we try to be open and honest with premium increases and keep them as low as possible.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Needless to say, it was expensive and had it not been for Embrace, I could not have given my kitty extra time and comfort before I had to send him to the Rainbow Bridge. Embrace made it so easy to submit claim forms for each Vet visit, each test, all the medication poor Smokey was on. They processed the claims efficiently and quickly. They approved everything that was covered under the policy I chose and the checks were in my hands so I could continue to try to help my kitty. Smokey was the sweetest, kindest cat I have ever known. I miss him so much.

After I let Embrace know that Smokey had passed, I received a beautiful sympathy card from them. I have had a mixed experience with Embrace. I enrolled my puppy when I picked her up from the breeder's house at 12 weeks of age. She is out of AKC Ch titled and fully health tested parents. She received excellent socialization and care while with the litter in the breeder's care. Enrolling her with Embrace was simple enough. And my wellness invoices that I've submitted have been mostly processed smoothly. The first one was rejected due to a data entry error by Embrace which changed the date of the invoice from 2019, to the year 1919. I was surprised that caused them to reject it rather than flagging it for review at least. But it was cleared up easily enough with a phone call.

I was able to submit an Orthopedic waiver form when I had my vet evaluate her and complete the form. That was processed smoothly. I was very disappointed, however, when I submitted my first illness claim. The bill was small enough that it just needed to be applied to my deductible, which had not been met at that time; none of it qualified for reimbursement yet. I understand that the first claim can take longer to process, but I was disappointed because Embrace put the claim on-hold several weeks after receiving it because they said they were missing a full year of medical records on my puppy. She was only 6 months old at the time, so they had every record on her since she came into existence. They had even contacted my vet to request these non-existent records.

So, I called and talked to a very nice Embrace representative about it. They understood what I was saying, said they made some notes, and told me that the agent should be able to process it after that. It was never updated on my account online but I assumed that the notes were made on their end and trusted it was being handled.

I was further let down, however, when two full weeks later I logged into my account to see that they had rejected my claim due to missing records. The notes that showed up now stated they required a full year of medical records to process the claim. *sigh* So, I called again and had the same conversation, on repeat, over approximately and hour and a half. The (still very nice) Embrace representative kept saying they needed records from the breeder's vet that the litter saw when they were in her care. So, they wanted to review puppy shot records from 0-12 weeks of age in order to process a claim of general gastroenteritis at 6 months of age.

As if that isn't borderline ridiculous enough, they even already had those records, too! The breeder had provided them to me (along with a complete binder of all health tests, certifications, and titles of the parents, too) and I had provided them to Embrace when I enrolled her. I say that this is ridiculous because when I asked whether they insure rescue dogs who are several years old with no vet records or if they reject all claims because they don't have records on them either, I was told they DO insure and pay claims for rescue pets without knowing their medical history.

The nice Embrace representative finally saw my point that this was, indeed, ridiculous and she spoke to someone else and they agreed it could be processed without providing additional records (again - there are no additional records! My puppy had only been alive for 6 months and they already had all 6 months of her life accounted for!). But I was told I would need to call back in a week and speak with the agent assigned my claim because that person was on vacation. I was VERY frustrated at this point considering it was already my second lengthy phone call attempting to deal with this, not to mention one email I had sent early on about it that had been totally ignored.

The very nice Embrace representative on the phone with me understood my frustration and found someone else who would be able to sort it out the next day. The next day turned out to be a week later, so I'm guessing the original agent handled it when they made it back in the office. I was concerned for the entire week following because it still was not updated in my account online, however, they did process it and apply the charges toward my deductible. Finally. I was pleased when the claim following that one was processed smoothly and within the standard estimated time frame.

One of my good friends has been an Embrace customer for about 3 years and she's had an excellent experience with them. She was stunned when I told her what I've experienced. I hope that this has all just been a bad fluke and isn't to be expected in my future transactions with this company. I did consider cancelling her policy and switching her since she is still so young and, therefore, we wouldn't be hit with a bunch of pre-existing conditions through another company. But I have decided not to based on: my friend's years long positive experience (I'm hopeful that IS predictive of the typical experience); because the representatives are very nice and genuinely do try to help when I've called; and Embrace does indeed offer great coverage at a reasonable price. I hope to be able to update this review in the future with far more positives!

    Response from Embrace Pet Insurance

Thank you, Brigette, for providing valuable feedback on Embrace. I am glad to hear that your problem was resolved, but disappointed that it took so long and so much of your personal time to find a solution. First illness claims are the trickiest, but they should not be as tough as it sounds like your first claim was. We are always looking for ways to improve, so I appreciate that you took the time to provide this information so we can get better at communication and follow through.

Thank you for remaining a loyal pet parent, I hope we will do a better job of meeting your needs in the future. If there is anything else you need, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Take care,

    Rachel
