I have already typed up a review, so I'll keep this short. Embrace has been nothing but amazing. I've recommended it to many people who all joined. They take care of not only our dog, but the humans too. They have reached out regarding our dogs heartworm treatment, and have even sent Christmas cards. They are reliable, and the claims department reviews every claim in a timely manner (and answer questions if we don't know if it is covered). 10/10 on service, and the family and friends that I told agree.

I had two dogs covered. The first one had Lymes not covered because it was considered wellness visit. The other’s cancer wasn’t covered bc during a wellness visit (prior to policy) he had an infection near site the cancer developed. Their focus is profit and fight hard to deny claims. Took months for them to deny the cancer claim. They have an automatic system that misinforms you. I was told claims were put on hold for lack of paperwork, but when I called they said they had it. I called several times and they bounced between “you’re missing vet diagnosis” and “you’re all set”. My vet wrote a letter stating that the infection (that went away on antibiotics as cancer clearly won’t) wasn’t related to an aggressive basosquamous carcinoma that was seen almost 7 months later.

The vet later called to explain my dog would’ve been dead if it went that long untreated. The professional’s opinion doesn’t matter. I found out it wasn’t covered by the automatic system, even though both a claims specialist and operator told me someone would be in touch with me personally. After the second appeal, someone called because I made a point of how unprofessional they were. Their reason for not covering was that I didn’t bring my dog back to make sure the vet noted that the cut was no longer there. They made sure not to cover either of my dogs’ (covered crystals in the urine of the one with cancer for 73 dollars) issues.

There was one man who spoke to me who was hoping his company would do the right thing and he seemed genuine. It was obvious this company focuses on profits and not the wellbeing of our loved pets. During a time that I was waiting for reimbursement to take care of my dog during a crucial time in his hospice care, I was spending hounding them for attention to my claim.

    Hi Anna,

Tobias' Wellness visit was not covered, not because of anything related to Lyme Disease, but because you do not have Wellness Rewards on your policy.

On your Go Fund Me page, you posted in June of 2019 that your insurance company would not cover your claims, so you needed financial assistance. You did not submit the claims to us until November of 2019. This seems to indicate that you were aware that your claims would not be covered because the issue was pre-existing. I will post the explanation here as well.

You purchased your policy 3 days after Cashew saw the vet for the lesion on his jaw, which was eventually diagnosed as cancer. The notes from the vet say:

""Consider BX [biopsy] and/or removal of area on jaw. Seen 10/18 for similar issue - it is unclear if it ever resolved completely...""

The notes say that it was unclear if it resolved completely. Because it started prior to the purchase of the policy, and never definitively resolved, anything related to the lesion on the jaw is not something we can cover.

In our phone conversation with your vet, she agreed understood our decision based on the terms of the policy (something that started prior to the purchase of the policy and never resolved is considered pre-existing).

The reason there were some issues with the medical history is because there were over 100 pages that we had to seek out - it is very rare that we encounter a pet with that much medical history, so it took extra time to make sure we had it all, and to review it properly.

Embrace will do whatever they can to deny your pet coverage however they can. The wording used in coverage plan is purposely written to be misleading and to give Embrace any excuse to hide behind the language so they can ultimately deny as much coverage as possible. It’s sad talking with multiple employees that there is a true culture of ‘deny, deny, deny’. I have had pet insurance through other companies and this one is by far the worst I’ve had - they truly don’t care about helping people and their pets out, they are just in it for the money and are very misleading about what they will actually cover.

    Hello Mark,

I'm sorry to hear about your disappointment with Embrace. I see you've spoken to a number of our senior leaders and are still dissatisfied with the situation. We do try very hard to keep our policy terms and conditions brief and easy to understand, but insurance documents can be challenging. We try very hard to explain in easy-to-understand language how the policy works, what is covered, and what isn't. We do always encourage our pet parents to read and understand their policy documents and to let us know if they have any questions.

I understand that you are frustrated with Knox's situation and the fact that the policy does exclude pre-existing conditions; however, it looks like you've submitted two claims and they were both covered completely. I'm glad to see we were able to cover his claims even though he does have a couple pre-existing conditions. In 2019, we covered 96% of all the claims we received, so this is always our goal and priority.

If there is anything else we can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact Embrace.

Thank you so much for all your help, Rachel & Embrace! I appreciate the attention to my concerns & the outstanding resolution. Not only did I receive clarification, they proactively began an appeal on my behalf & have been supportive throughout this entire process. I feel not only thrilled with the help & incredibly impressed at the outreach, but the willingness to go out of her/their way to find a solution. I felt like I was a person being helped by another person like me, with the best interest for me & my pup (rather than a customer who received a generic response with only a company's interest at hand). Just outstanding response all around, I have never been so impressed.

    Hello Cindy,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding Embrace, we always appreciate when pet parent's give us insight on where we can improve.

It looks like when you purchased your policy, you requested a medical history review to be done right at the start of the policy, this is a great choice and I recommend it for all pet parents! We cannot complete the medical history review until after the illness waiting period has ended, because we want to review the medical records all the way through the end of the waiting periods. This way you have all the information regarding pre-existing conditions at once.

Prior to the end of the illness waiting period, the orthopedic report card was completed and submitted. Because this orthopedic report card was sent in before the medical history review could be completed, you received notification that the orthopedic report card was received and reviewed and noted to be "all clear". In this email we explain that the "all clear" only refers to the orthopedic report card and not all of Wiley's medical history.

After Wiley's illness waiting period ended, we were able to complete his medical history review. In the medical history review email, we listed every pre-existing condition noted in his medical history. It looks like even though he was orthopedically sound on the date of his orthopedic examination, there were a few orthopedic pre-existing conditions in the medical records prior to this exam. These were addressed and explained in the medical history review email.

I'm sorry for the confusion in the order of the emails that you received regarding Wiley's pre-existing conditions. I hope this helps to clarify the timeline. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to email me at reh@embracepetinsurance.com.

Coverages were comparable but the service with Embrace is outstanding. Claims are processed timely and reimbursement is usually within 2 weeks. I had to wait for over 30 days for reimbursement from VIP. My only negative, is I wish I received an EOB with my check rather than having to sign on to see what was approved.

I had Embrace Pet Insurance for my 6-year-old dog since 2015. All was well and I have virtually no claims and then when my dog hit 4yrs old they started increasing my premiums. In the last two years my premiums have gone up 60%! I understand some increase as the dog ages and cost of medical care increases but 30% a year? That is insane! Don't be fooled by the low quote. As soon as they lock you in for a couple of years the numbers will climb quickly. Some folks have reported their premiums doubling the next year. Shame on Embrace.

    Hello Karen,

I'm sorry to hear you unhappy with your Embrace experience regarding premium increases. I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback, we're always looking for ways to improve for our pet parents.

In regards to the policy premium, our policies can increase at renewal each year, and the main factors that go into the pricing are the age and breed of your pet, and claims data based on region, pet factors, and policy factors. We will never adjust your premium according to your specific claims. We always try to temper increases by requesting a rate cap through each state's department of insurance, but premium increases are necessary to continue paying the 96% of claims that we have been.

I see you cancelled your policy for Bear, but instead of cancelling, we can always adjust coverage levels so you have a premium within your budget while still having all the same benefits. Even increasing the deductible by $100 can make a difference, and with our Healthy Pet Deductible credit for each healthy year, sometimes that can negate the increase. We also don't increase if we don't have to, we see some policies decrease based on the same actuarial information that we get each year.

I know this isn't what you were hoping to hear, but we try to be open and honest with premium increases and keep them as low as possible.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Hello Vivian,

Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback about Embrace. We take it very seriously when our pet parents are not completely satisfied. It looks like you did not request a medical history review for Winston when you purchased the policy, so this was not done until the time of his first claim. You received a complete medical history review email on 11/4/19, which outlines every pre-existing exclusion on the policy. We always recommend that pet parents have the medical history review completed up front if they are concerned what might be excluded from coverage.

The good news about Winston's tooth exclusion is now that he has had a dental cleaning to address the pre-existing dental disease, dental procedures for periodontal disease may be eligible for coverage in the future.

If you are planning a costly procedure like an anesthetic dental, you can also have a pre-certification done prior to the procedure so you know exactly where you stand with coverage. You can access the pre-certification form on your MyEmbrace portal.

If there is anything else I can help to clarify or address, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I'm really satisfied with Embrace Pet Insurance. When selecting Embrace several years ago, I read through all of the fine print, so there's been no surprises in terms of what's covered versus not covered. I was able to select a custom plan that fit my preferences in terms of my deductible, monthly premium, and maximum benefit. Asking my vet to submit claims for me has been really easy, and Embrace takes no more than two business days usually to process the claim. So many pets inevitably get sick, so it makes so much sense to get pet insurance!

If you don't get pet insurance, it's like not liking free money. Because I had Embrace, I felt more comfortable pursuing surgery for my dog when she had a bleeding tumor on her liver and was in critical condition. The vets said she may not survive the surgery, but she did! And biopsy results on her liver tumor suggests it's not an aggressive cancer, and she's going to have a good long term prognosis. Embrace processed my claim quickly and issued my benefit - no conflict, no hassle - it was so easy. Because of Embrace, I've been able to extend my dog's life for a couple more years, and that additional time together is priceless.

They said they would have be done processing the claim in 15 business days, but I was reaching out 20 or more business days later asking when I would have a response. To their credit when I did, I would get a response the next day, but it took me contacting them, this happened four different times. This extended the time I was having to look at paperwork and talking to vets after I had to euthanize my cat for another month and half.

Other than them not being able to hold up their times, they were okay. I ended up having appeal my last claims because they said that pink eye (before I adopted) and sneezing were related to the FP and when I told my vets they were appalled, it seemed like an easy way to not pay out the claim. So I would always talk to the vet and see what they think about the denied claim and try to appeal it following the directions Embrace gives.

    Hello Bethany,

I appreciate you taking the time to provide open and honest feedback. The first illness or accident claim does take the longest because a complete medical history review has to be done before the claim can be processed. This process can take quite a bit of time because medical records have to be collected and reviewed from every veterinary hospital the pet was seen at in the 12 months prior to the start of the policy. I'm sorry we were not able to meet the 15 day processing guideline, it is always our goal, but sometimes it is not possible.

So far, just like hockey: 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie - what a pain! I went with them because of USAA's tie up. Chloe's claim was received on 10/30/19, this was the first claim submitted for her; which means prior to processing, a complete medical history review had to be done. A medical history review is the process of collecting and reviewing all of a pet's medical records from the 12-months prior to the start of the policy through the end of the waiting periods. This process can take quite a bit of time because it requires the hospitals to send us medical records and requires the time of a claims adjuster to review medical records page by page.

For Chloe, when the records were first received and reviewed we found we needed some additional dates in order to update a couple temporary exclusions. Once those additional dates were received and reviewed, Chloe's medical history review was completed and her claim was processed and covered.

I do apologize this process took longer than you hoped, first claims do take longer than subsequent claims. As Chloe's medical history review is now complete, future illness claims will be processed much faster. I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback, it is very valuable to making sure we are providing the best service to our pet parents.

    Take care,

    Rachel

So I originally sent in my claim form regarding one of my pets on October 23, 2019. I have received six (6) messages on the App regarding my claim such as "we are missing a diagnosis for the claim", "Your claim is in line for processing. You should hear from us soon!", "We requested your pet's full medical record..." then numerous other headings. I spoke to my vet's office, and it's made it around the office that nearly all of the vet techs have personally sent in my pet's medical history. It is now November 21, 2019 and I have no clue on what to do? Do I continue telling Embrace that the medical records were sent or tell my vet that I don't believe that the several vet techs sent in the record? This is not a 30$ claim, more in the several hundreds on top of what I already spend on this pet insurance. As of now, I do not recommend this pet insurance. Hopefully my experience turns out for the better. Good Luck to those of you having issues.

    Hello Anthony,

I’m sorry to hear about the frustration with your first claims for Tony, I hope I can help shed some light on the situation. It looks like when you submitted the first claim for Tony’s visit on 10/18/19, the claim form you submitted was blank. Unfortunately, in order to set up and process a claim, we need a diagnosis (provided by your veterinarian) for each visit submitted on the claim form. As this was not provided at the time the claim was submitted, our administration team had to reach out to your vet to collect this diagnosis from your vet directly. The diagnosis for the visit was received on 10/25/19.

As this was Tony’s first claim, a medical history review is required prior to processing the claim. When you first purchased the policy in August 2019, it was explained that we would not review medical records until the time of the first claim, unless you requested a medical history review, which you did not. On 10/28/19, the adjuster who started Tony’s medical history review, requested his records from SeaCoast Veterinary Group; unfortunately, they only sent medical records for one visit in October, not the records for the time frame we requested. The adjuster reached back out to SeaCoast Veterinary Hospital on 10/30/19 and 11/8/19 but did not get the medical records that were required until 11/20/19. Once the medical records from SeaCoast Veterinary Hospital were received and reviewed, it was discovered that Tony had been seen at another veterinary hospital in the 12-months prior to the start of the policy, Pet Emergency and Specialty Center, in Chula Vista, CA. The adjuster requested medical records from this facility has well, but they have not been received yet.

I apologize that the Tony’s claim has not been processed yet; however, we have taken every possible action to collect his pre-policy medical records and complete his medical history review. We will continue to try to complete this medical history review and get the pending claims processed as soon as possible. If you would like to help expedite the process, you can reach out to any veterinary hospitals Tony was seen at in the 12-months prior to the start of the policy and have them send his detailed medical records to us. Records can be faxed to 800-238-1042 or emailed to claims@embracepetinsurance.com.

If there is anything else I can do for you in the meantime, feel free to contact me.

I used to have Nationwide Pet Insurance. I left them after they refused to cover an emergency visit that my pet had from a common parasite she picked up. Nationwide claimed they didn't cover parasites. I figured this was a big one not to cover so I cancelled my insurance and after shopping around I chose Embrace, because they seemed to tout how clear they were on what they wouldn't cover. 5 months into coverage my pet got pancreatitis which was scary and so I took her to the emergency room because she was vomiting. I filed a claim with embrace, which wouldn't even have been covered due to the deductible not being met yet, and they told me that vomiting and diarrhea were considered pre-existing conditions since the parasite she had previously had had the same symptoms, even though these are 2 different diagnosis they consider symptoms pre-existing not the actual diagnosis.

It became clear to me that they wanted me to pay them money, but would exclude any reason that I would take my pet to the emergency room. Vomiting and diarrhea are 2 of the main symptoms I would think something was wrong with my pet. I cancelled my insurance. They are a scam, and the worst kind, because they market themselves as if they aren't. My experience is they will take your money happily, but when it comes down to it will try to do whatever they can to not cover your pet. Awful company!

    Hello Kirk,

I’m sorry to hear about your disappointment with Embrace. I looked at your policy and Ku'uipo’s pre-existing conditions and would like to help explain the situation. Ku'uipo’s policy started on 9/21/19, with her 14-day illness waiting period ending on 10/5/19. On 2/14/19 at Urban Animal, prior to the start of the policy, Ku'uipo was noted to have diarrhea. At this time, a definitive cause for her diarrhea was not found, but a fecal test was performed to rule out intestinal parasites, and it was negative.

On 9/12/19, Ku'uipo was seen at Seattle Veterinary Specialists for vomiting. At this time, a definitive cause for her vomiting was not found, but radiographs and blood work were discussed to further determine the cause of the vomiting. These tests were not done, and she was given an injection to stop vomiting.

According to the policy terms and conditions, a pet must be free from a condition or clinical sign for 12 consecutive months for that condition or clinical sign to be eligible for coverage again. As Ku'uipo was not free from vomiting or diarrhea before she presented for it again on 11/7/19, these claims could not be covered. I’m sorry this is not what you were hoping to hear, but this is stated in the policy terms and conditions and is how all Embrace policies operate.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I'm sorry to hear about your frustration with the finance department. I looked into your situation and it appears that when you notified our finance department that you never received the check, the payment was cancelled on our end. At the time, our finance lead let you know to not cash the check as the payment had been cancelled. A new check was issued to the correct address. After the payment had been cancelled it looks like you tried to cash the check and unfortunately, there was a fee for depositing a cancelled check. I do apologize for this situation, but it looks like you were notified of the situation and given instruction on how to handle the checks appropriately.

A vet bill of a few thousand dollars is never an expected expense. The only saving grace was knowing that our pet insurance was going to help lessen the costs. I immediately called Embrace to find out what had to be done to ensure the insurance would cover this, indeed to find out IF they wound cover this. Imagine my joy and surprise when I was told, "Of course this is covered, let's start the paperwork so that it is precertified." WOW!!!. Within a matter of minutes, it was all done and Jake was set. Paying for something like this is a big deal and you wonder how to afford it. Embrace made it all so simple.

    Hello Lauren,

I am sorry for the frustrating experience you had with Embrace. I am glad to hear there were some good aspects of starting the policy. All pet insurance companies exclude pre-existing conditions and have waiting periods where coverage is restricted. Allie's policy had a 6-month waiting period for orthopedic conditions, during that time, all orthopedic conditions are excluded from coverage. The policy started on 7/25/19, and you submitted a claim for her cruciate ligament tear on 8/28/19, during the orthopedic waiting period. Unfortunately, coverage for this condition is not available as it occurred in the orthopedic waiting period.

In regards to the refund, we do not issue full refunds if the policy is in force for more than 30 days. As you had an active policy for almost three months, a full refund was not possible. I am sorry this is not the news you were hoping to hear. If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The only reason I went with Embrace is because I got a discount for their affiliation with USAA. Embarrassing on USAA's part to be affiliated with such an awful company and I fully intend to let them know this.... I gave embrace all my vet info when I started my plan on 3/12/2019 so that they could start gathering documentation on their end. I must have accidentally put Texas as my physical address when I first filled out the paperwork online (I just moved to Arizona from Texas) but I got several calls from the embrace “team” verifying my info, and I corrected my address on the phone with them. I was told my premium may change but I never heard anything again about it. I then got another call from a CSR verifying the exact same information. Annoying, but fine.

I filed my first claim on 7/27. They claim to have a 2-3 day turnaround for claim processing. The claim was not completed until 9/6!!!! On 8/9, I was notified my claim was on hold because the pre-policy medical history was missing. Que me waiting again on hold, to be told 1) they never obtained all of the vet info even though I gave it to them months ago 2) they never once picked up the phone to CALL the vet’s office to see why it was never returned. It was only after I called embrace, called my vet, and called embrace back did they actually reach out to the clinic. The next claim notification I received was that my claim was denied because the claim date was prior to the coverage date, so I had to call again, and was told it was an error because they processed my previous vet documents as a claim instead.

Once I did get my claim back (my pug had an ear infection) they denied the claim because he had alopecia (hair thinning) prior to the start of coverage date and ear infections are conveniently deemed a “dermatological condition” in their fine print, so him having alopecia previously meant the ear infection wouldn’t be covered. Now I work in the medical field and in NO WAY is derm/the integumentary system and ENT (ear, nose, throat) the same system or even related, so this has me baffled. But I understand, because they are in the business of screwing their customers over and anything they can get out of paying they ABSOLUTELY will. I then called to update my address because I moved 3 miles down the road and was told that my policy was going to increase by nearly ONE THIRD because they still had me living Texas!! (Mind you I corrected this on the phone with them twice and the claims were clearly from Arizona.)

The icing on the cake was when I tried submitting a claim this week because my baby had a corneal ulcer. Because he had conjunctivitis 8 months ago, (which btw is NOT a diagnosis, it’s a descriptive term for red eye) they denied it because the insurance auditor claimed it was “related”. And guess what, nowhere in the fine print does it mention an ulcer is considered a related condition, they just get to decide what is related, isn’t that convenient! I have a feeling anything in the general vicinity of his face they would have found a way to exclude for being related just so they could get out of paying!!! RUN away from this crooked, awful company. I have already told all my friends and family not to do business with them and I implore you to do the same.

    Hello Kristine,

We originally requested notes from both Hayden Road and Preston Park as soon as you let us know where Oliver had been seen. We received records within a couple of weeks. The notes are reviewed once the pet parent either requests a medical history review or once the first accident/illness claim is submitted.

Oliver's first illness claim was submitted in July of this year. At that time, we processed the records we had and noticed that there was mention of coughing, which could have been related to the respiratory distress he was seen for in July. Temporary pre-existing conditions can be expired if the pet doesn't exhibit signs relating to the original event within 12 months, so we requested more medical history in order to expire the pre-existing condition and move forward with his claim. We were successful, and the cough pre-ex was removed, allowing us to cover that portion of his claim. Because of this, it did take extra time for Oliver's original claim to be processed. Luckily, since we had everything in place when you submitted his second claim, it was received and processed within 2 days. I apologize if there was any confusion or frustration caused by Oliver's claim from 4/10/2018. Anytime we receive an invoice from a facility or pet parent for an insured pet, we set up a claim to ensure we're not missing anything.

As for the claims regarding the ear infection and corneal ulcer, Oliver was noted to have alopecia and conjunctivitis prior to the start of his policy. These conditions could relate to the future claims of otitis and a corneal ulcer respectively and therefore could not be covered per the terms and conditions of your policy.

Per your review, you set up your quote with your old Texas address, therefore your policy was linked to the premiums in that area. I reviewed the correspondences on your policy. In calls you made to our office on 8/10/19 and 8/30/19 the representative confirmed your mailing address with you. An additional call on 8/16/19 was also made by you in which an address wasn't discussed whatsoever. None of these calls had a correction to your address mentioned, nor was this topic discussed further than the initial confirmation. Your call on 10/12/19 to change your address was the first time your location was discussed. The representative did let you know that your premium may not change, but that if it did, you should monitor your email for more information. That information was sent on 10/14/2019.

    Kind regards,

    Hello Hannah,

I am sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with Embrace. I took a look at your policy and would like to help clarify a few items for you. Sofie's cruciate ligament tear claims from 2017 were not covered because she was first noted to have a cruciate ligament tear on 9/15/15, prior to the start of the policy. As her policy began on 9/15/16, this condition is pre-existing and excluded for the life of the policy.

The reason Sofie's recent mass claim was not covered is because Sofie was first noted to have an undiagnosed mass on 9/15/15, prior to the start of the policy. We explained in your medical history review that masses would not be eligible for coverage until that mass was diagnosed and highly encouraged you to get the mass diagnosed so we could cover future masses and cancer. Unfortunately, the policy terms are clear, if a pet has an undiagnosed mass prior to the start of the policy, all future masses, including cancer, will be excluded from coverage. If the pre-existing mass is still present and can be diagnosed, please have it diagnosed and provide that to Embrace on appeal. If the pre-existing mass can be narrowed on appeal, the claims for cancer or future masses can likely be covered. Please send this information to me directly at reh@embracepetinsurance.com.

Claim denied on the terms of it being dermatological. Essentially because I brought him to a vet as a tiny puppy and noticed he was chewing on his foot your company has ruled out ANYTHING related to his skin which is absolutely absurd. His skin is the largest organ on his body, and now whether it is a staph infection (not allergy or chewing foot related) or a scratch on his skin it is all instantly denied. Extremely disappointing as your company came highly recommended. But instead you've ensured you can cover as little as humanly possible because his 'skin' is not covered for a year. Awful service.

    Hello Chris,

I'm sorry to hear that you are frustrated with Embrace and the policy terms. I took a look at your policy and hope I can help clarify a few things. The policy definition of dermatological condition does include anything related to the skin. I know this seems like a big exclusion, but it is because the skin is all one organ and we have to treat it as all one body system.

In Malarkey's case, he was first noted to have irritation on his external ear flap on 11/20/18. Although this is a mild condition and does not seem like a big deal, it is an abnormality; and therefore, is pre-existing according to the policy terms. Unfortunately, because he was noted to have a dermatological condition prior to the start of the policy, this condition is not eligible for coverage until Malarkey is free from clinical signs and treatment for all dermatological conditions for 12 consecutive months. I know this isn't the news you were hoping to hear, but it is clearly defined in the policy documents.

The good news is, it looks like we were able to cover $1,871.53 worth of Malarkey's other claims, so his policy has proven to be very valuable for you. If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Like other 1 star reviews on this site, I had the same experience. I have two dogs, one super healthy, one with some congenital issues we never expected to have covered by insurance. We got a policy for both of them because we were concerned about them aging and hoped insurance would help with some of the routine trials that come with dogs. The occasional diarrhea and vomiting they sometimes get or any skin issues or ear infections. Routine stuff.

I purchased a policy in August after a recommendation from our vet, and at the end of August, our dog developed a small skin infection. Antibiotics cleared it up in a few days. The claim was denied. Why? This is the exact sentence from their review: Unfortunately, a dermatologic condition, excessive head shaking was noted on 2/7/19, which was prior to the policy purchase. This makes dermatologic conditions (see Embrace definition copied below) pre-existing. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? They failed to note here that our dog has never been diagnosed with any sort of ear infection that would cause excessive head shaking. There is no pre-existing condition. This insurance company hides behind their fancy policy wording to never pay a claim. Despicable.

One-sentence summary: If your dog has vomited at least one time in the past year (i.e., if it is a dog), your dog will not be covered for any illness for which vomiting could conceivably be a symptom (i.e., most illnesses). My experience with Embrace began a year ago. One day, I came home and found that my cat had been run over by a car but was still alive. Due to the extent of his injuries, the ER vets estimated that doing everything needed to save him would likely total over $10,000. Being a PhD student, I just did not have that kind of money. After trying to come up with the funds, I ultimately had to watch my cat go limp and die in my arms because I could not afford his vet bills.

After that awful experience, I was determined to never let that happen again, and signed up my healthy 3-year old rescued Dalmatian for a plan with Embrace. I did research online before choosing an insurance company, and given the generally positive things I read about Embrace, and the way they marketed themselves as honest and straightforward, decided they seemed like the best bet. My dog is my best friend, and I cannot even imagine being in that situation with him. In early October 2018, I received an email from Embrace: "Hi! You are now out of the accident and illness waiting periods. Nice!" Great I thought, now I now longer have to worry about having to choose between my dog's health and financial ruin. Little did I know.

Fast forward to June, and my dog's health one day begins to decline rapidly, out of nowhere. By the end of the week, he could barely get out of bed. Realizing he was only getting worse, I brought him first to his normal vet office, where they did blood tests and found that his electrolytes and kidney values were abnormal. They sent me to a more specialized 24-hour ER clinic, the one I had been to with my cat. There they diagnosed his mysterious symptoms as Addison's disease.

He fortunately made a rapid recovery on meds and was fine for about a month, when one night he suddenly jumped out of bed (he sleeps with me) and proceeded to have a grand mal seizure, his whole body convulsing, drooling profusely, losing bowel control. I was terrified he might be dying. I held him and tried to calm him and keep him from bumping into anything. Gradually, the seizure died down. However, over the next 24 hours he had 5 or so additional seizures. We ended up back at the ER. They were able to stabilize him but a neurologist found nothing abnormal. He had never had a seizure before in his life and since they could find no cause, they diagnosed him with idiopathic epilepsy. Seizures are not associated with Addison's or his medications, so it seems that was just a really unlucky month for us. At least, I thought, these things will definitely be covered by his insurance. I was just happy he was okay.

So the claims? As of now, 4/5 have been rejected (related to Addison's) and the one for epilepsy has not been decided. I filed them all in early August- it is now October. Why were the Addison's claims rejected? Well in November, I brought him to the vet because I thought he seemed a little constipated. After my cat incident I did not want to take any risks- that's what I insured him for. The vet found nothing wrong and prescribed a bland diet, and he went back to normal. She recorded, however, that he had vomited up one serving of chicken soup I fed him (a new food for him).

Because vomiting is a "clinical sign," Embrace said, Addison's (known as "the great pretender" because of its nonspecific symptoms) was a pre-existing condition and not covered. Ignoring for a second the absurdity of that, how could it be pre-existing if it was past the waiting period? Well, Embrace messed up. His vet checkup the previous year had actually been more than 12 months before I enrolled- after they told me the waiting period was over I didn't bother to double check the date- they had received all his records after all.

The same day they denied the claims, I received an email saying that they had gone back and altered the waiting period in his policy- a year later. Not only is this grossly unethical, it is clearly in violation of a provision in his policy for my state of residence. I won't go into detail, but the wording is clear that there is a specific time window and set of circumstances under which coverage can be retroactively modified, and this in no way fits. So Embrace does not even bother to check that they are following their own policy.

I am severely disappointed and frankly disgusted by my experience with Embrace. I know how insurance is supposed to work- I used to work as a healthcare industry consultant and understanding health insurance was part of my job. Let me be clear- this is not insurance- this is a scam. I will update this review as necessary but unless Embrace complies with their stated policy, I will see them in small claims court.

    Response from Embrace Pet Insurance

    Hello Maxwell,

I am sorry to hear about your disappointment with Embrace. I looked over your policy and would like to help clarify a few things regarding your review. For a policy to be valid, a pet must be examined in the 12-months prior to the start of the policy. You purchased your policy online; therefore, this condition was explained in multiple places in the quote engine and after you purchased your policy. In addition to this, in the emails you received as a part of the onboarding process, it was explained that Ollie needed to have an exam with a veterinarian in the past 12 months for the policy to be valid.

It was not until you submitted the first illness claim on 8/7/19, that we initiated Ollie’s medical history review. At this time, it was discovered that Ollie had not had an exam in the 12-months prior to the start of the policy; therefore, according to the policy terms and conditions, the policy was not valid until the date of the first examination.

The first examination occurred on 11/8/18. Based on this information, his illness waiting period was extended to this date, and the abnormalities noted on this date are pre-existing. On 11/8/18, he was found to be painful since the day prior, hunched over, not eating, and vomiting. He was also found to be crying, shaking, and released his bladder and bowels. The veterinarian noted that Ollie’s belly was tense during exam and they suspected that these symptoms were possibly due to something gastrointestinal or a type or neuromuscular pain.

Ollie was seen on 6/10/19 at Pittsford Animal Hospital for not eating, vomiting after eating, lethargy and difficulty standing on his rear legs. After diagnostics were completed, Ollie was diagnosed with Addison’s disease. Common clinical signs for Addison’s disease are weakness, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, and decrease in appetite. Ollie was exhibiting a few of these clinical signs at his visit on 11/8/18, which were pre-existing conditions. As there were no diagnostics completed on 11/8/18 to rule out Addison’s disease as a cause for Ollie’s symptoms, we are unable to cover any claims associated with Ollie’s Addison’s disease.

The claim that was submitted for Ollie’s seizures on 7/16/19, was put on hold so we could obtain the veterinary exam notes to determine that his seizures were in no way related to his Addison’s disease. As soon as we get these missing visit notes, the pending claim will be processed.

If you would like to have you vet submit additional information as to why they feel that Ollie’s symptoms on 11/8/18 are not related to his underlying Addison’s disease, we can then set up an appeal for these claims.

    Take care,

We have had insurance on our 12 dogs with Embrace for around two years now and have overall had a good experience until now. Claims and communication were thorough and timely but we have had not received the prompt emails and turn around time on the last claims. It seems as if there is a tactic to delay paying claims. The dogs are the same dogs from day one and they are asking for medical records before they will pay. All of our dogs’ medical records were provided when we began the policy, all have long passed the waiting period so there are no pre-existing conditions.

One of the dogs was treated at an emergency clinic upon referral from our regular veterinarian and they are requesting a complete medical record from the emergency clinic. An emergency clinic does not have a year’s medical record. They only see animals on an emergent basis for a short amount of time. The policy states claims will be addressed in specific amount of time. I have to pay the claims upfront sometimes with a credit card for which I pay 18% interest. When our claims are not paid in a timely manner that interest is like a rate hike for the year, a cost of doing business with Embrace.

We spend roughly 4000.00 a year for this insurance via direct withdrawal. It is not late and if it were I’m certain I would be notified immediately. Just would like to have the same privilege with claims handling. We chose Embrace with the long haul in mind but now beginning to wonder if we will have to start all over again with another company and the waiting periods and pre-existing conditions we have already paid to cover with Embrace.

    Hello Aron,

I want to begin by thanking you for being such a loyal customer to Embrace. Not only have you been with Embrace for years, you also have so many fur babies insured with us! They are lucky to be in such a great family!

I am sorry for the delay in processing Holland and Purdey's most recent claims. Our claims department is behind our normal claims processing turn-around time. We are making every possible effort to get this remedied and I really appreciate your patience as we get things back on track. Both Purdey and Holland's claims were held up to have some additional medical records reviewed to update some temporary pre-existing conditions, which I did this morning. I was able to update both their medical history reviews and get their claims in line for processing today. Again, I apologize for this delay, but am happy to report they will be completed very shortly. I assure you, the delay in processing is not intention or strategic, in fact, we are putting all our efforts into reducing this delay and getting claims processed faster.

Thank you again for being such a loyal customer and I hope we are able to restore your faith in our company. If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Hello Marlene,

I am sorry that you are disappointed with Embrace. I took a look at your policy and I see that you've submitted two claims for your pets. Of these two claims, one was covered and the other was not. The reason the claim was not able to be covered was because it was related to one of Juno's pre-existing conditions. Unfortunately, all pet insurance companies exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Although getting insurance when a dog is young and healthy is the best time, insurance can still be beneficial for older pets or pets with pre-existing conditions. Your policy will not cover conditions that were present prior to the start of the policy (or in the waiting periods), but it will cover new and unexpected illnesses and injuries.

I know the exclusion of pre-existing conditions is a disappointing part of pet insurance, but it is necessary to keep premiums low.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

After a positive interaction with Embrace Pet Insurance, Nancy increased their star rating on Oct. 4, 2019.

    Updated review: Oct. 4, 2019

I would like to change my review rating. Early on, I did not recommend. However, I am now changing the rating. Now that I have a better understanding of how this works, I have a more positive experience. The Wellness Awards are a real benefit for a new puppy as they cover vaccines and neutering and the deductible does not have to be met. My recommendation to anyone who has a new puppy is to take out the policy early on prior to the vaccinations starting. They are obviously very busy as it is difficult to get assistance when you call; however, you can leave a number and they will call back. I have found that once you get a Representative on the phone, they are very helpful.

    Original Review: Sept. 8, 2019

Updated on 09/11/2019: I just read your response to my review. In regard to my request for a hard copy of the policy, you failed to mention that my call was the Second Request for the hard copy. Also, I fully understand the policy in regard to pre-existing conditions. My puppy is 5 mos old and fortunately does not have a pre- existing condition. Also, my Veterinarian has done a thorough medical history on the puppy.

I actually got the Embrace brochure in a packet of information that my Veterinarian gave me on my first visit. I will make sure to provide them with feedback and your response to me online, and perhaps they can provide me with information on another pet insurance that will be more valuable and in line with meeting my needs. I will reiterate what other reviewers have said, there is far more paperwork in terms of submitting claims than is necessary. Perhaps Embrace should look at streamlining the process. As your customer, I found no added value in your response to me.

    Regards,

    Nancy

Original review: So far I am finding it pretty useless for a NEW puppy. Amount of paperwork and time spent is ridiculous. Perhaps if the dog has a catastrophic problem, it may be useful. I would advise someone to read carefully to really understand what it covers before you purchase. I should have done that. I requested a hard copy of the policy as I don’t have a printer and don’t want to go to the computer every time I need to look up something. So far no response to my request. How hard can it be to put a hard copy in the mail? Bottom line, I am paying $46.00 a month with a $500 deductible. I don’t see the value.

If I could give negative stars, I would. We have been customers of Embrace for years with one of our pups. We now pay over $160/month for the best coverage for our two dogs, and we have never had a claim. Our golden pup (22 months) did us a solid and ingested some mystery substance that required emergency care. Over $3K later, I submit my first claim in 6 maybe 7 years? First they put the claim on hold because they were missing the second page of the invoice (which contained no material information), then they put the claim on hold because they didn't have a full medical history. Our vet finally satisfied that hurdle.

NOW it is on hold because they require the full medical history for the 12 months prior to getting the insurance. We insured him when we adopted him at 6 months old, so math seems to be getting in the way here. I have forwarded them everything that I have since we adopted him, and I am just waiting for the next ** excuse as to why they can't process our claim. It has almost been a month, the the company has done nothing but drag their feet and find excuses as to why they can't reimburse us (typical insurance company). Do yourself and your pet a favor and steer clear of these scammers.

I looked over your policy and it looks like we received two of Clancy's claims on 8/7/19 and one on 8/20/19. As these were the first claims, we had to complete a medical history review prior to processing. Clancy's medical history review was completed on 9/3/19 and the claims were processed on 9/3/19 as well.

Regarding the claim that was missing the second page of the invoice, this missing page did contain crucial information. We require complete invoices to insure that we reimburse the correct total to our pet parents, including sales tax. We received the second page of the invoice on 8/26/19 and the claim was processed today (9/6/19).

I have policies for both my dog and cat under Embrace insurance. I have submitted 12 claims and every single claim except for one has been rejected - even when 2 of the claims had the vets themselves file appeals. Embrace has very broad language around what is considered a pre-existing condition and therefore reject nearly every single claim I've submitted. It feels like a scam. One example - we rescued our dog, and when we first brought him to the vet they noted that he was itchy. 6 months later, our dog got an ear infection due to yeast buildup after giving him a bath. Embrace rejected the claim because "itchiness" was a pre-existing condition - even though it has absolutely nothing to do with a one-off ear infection. Avoid Embrace at all costs - use Trupanion or one of the other companies.

Canceling policy after, roughly, six months of having it. After purchasing a puppy, our second dog in the household, we decided to get pet insurance to cover annual exams, surgeries, etc. Three months after having our puppy we found out that he suffered from persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous/persistent hyaloid artery. We sent a claim in and got rejected because it was a pre-existing condition. Ok...understandable.

Months later we scheduled him to get neutered and the specialist suggested that we also get his eyes removed since our puppy has been blind since birth anyway. So we did. We submitted our claims for the surgery and once again got denied. Apparently surgery is separate from neutering in our policy??? And we were told that we needed to purchase another policy along with the one we already had in order for neutering to be covered. They are also denying his enucleation surgery because it is related to his pre-existing condition. So our dog had surgery. Our policy covers surgeries and yet the claim was denied.

After his surgery, he had a couple of seizures which caused us to go back to the vet. They ran blood tests to determine why he was having seizures. At this point we still don't know why he suffered seizures - the vet has not diagnosed him with anything. Embrace is also rejecting his blood tests. I am paying $70.00 a month for pet insurance that has no benefit at all. In our experience, Embrace is VERY quick to deny all of our claims and not worth the money.

    Hello Kristina,

I am sorry to hear about your frustration with Embrace. The policy you purchased excludes coverage for all preventative/routine procedures. This means charges such as annual exams, vaccinations, heartworm and flea preventatives, and spay/neuter procedures are not covered by the policy. I understand this is frustrating, but the insurance policy is for unexpected accidents and illnesses, not for routine treatment, which is why Squiggy's neuter surgery was not eligible for coverage with his accident and illness insurance policy.

Regarding his eye condition, it was noted prior to the date the policy was purchased, which makes it a pre-existing condition. Pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. This means any treatments or diagnostic testing related to the pre-existing condition is excluded from coverage. I'm sorry this is the case, I wish I was able to provide better news on this front.

We started with Embrace in 2017, paying $80-something per month for our four cats. The renewal paperwork we just received (to begin in 2019) is for $143, which means that over only two years, our rates almost doubled with this company. Frankly, they're not that great to begin with: We only get 80% reimbursement after a $1000 deductible (per cat), with a $15,000/year maximum. Other companies don't have per-year maximums, etc. That was fine at $80/month, but NOT at $143/month. When I first bought the insurance in 2017, I specifically asked their representatives about rate hikes, and both of the Embrace employees I spoke with said that even after using the insurance, their rates didn't go up. They're very dishonest, and we feel trapped. I highly recommend that people go elsewhere for pet insurance!

My husband scheduled our dog's annual physical and I didn't know about it until after he'd already taken her. I've explained to him more than once that insurance will only cover one physical per year (humans & pets) so they have to be scheduled for at least a year after the previous physical. This one was less than 10 months after her previous physical.

I filed the claim online and, as I expected, received a check for just the small amount remaining available after payment on the previous physical. I had just paid $200+ for an emergency passport to replace a lost one (that was then found that evening) and, because of a bank error, came back from vacation to hundreds of dollars in NSF fees (only about 1/3 of which the bank would reimburse). So I felt like I was being pummeled by unnecessary expenses. I HATE wasting money, and now I was out about $200 because my dog's physical wasn't covered.

I figured it was worth a shot, so I called Embrace and explained that this was my dog's annual physical, that I didn't know why my husband had taken her 2 months earlier than the previous year, and asked if there was any way they would cover it as if it had been a full year. The rep told me that she would submit it. I just received the decision and they covered it in full! This really made my day and took a lot of the sting out of my recent expense attack. Embrace wasn't my first pet insurance company, but I have been with them for a few years now and they are far superior to my previous insurer. I wish I could put my kids on this plan. I will be with Embrace for as long as I have pets.

Treatment for acute poisoning resolved the physical symptoms and returned the enzymes to normal - yet they are refusing to pay the claim because it involved vomiting. I am contacting insurance commissioner and filing small claims action and writing to their board of directors. This is fraud - after months of working to understand what documentation they wanted and nagging my vets to supply it. Bogus, bogus - dishonest. Hello Tina,

I am sorry for the frustrating experience filing your first claim with Embrace. It is a requirement of the policy to have the claim for filled out by the veterinary provider. I certainly understand that vets are very busy, which is why the claim form does not need to be filled out by the veterinarian specifically but can be a veterinary staff member (registered veterinary technician or veterinary assistant) instead. This requirement is in place to ensure that the most accurate information is provided about the claim. By having the veterinary provider complete the claim form, we get the most detailed, medically specific information the first time around and often means we don’t have to reach out to your veterinarian for additional information, which can slow down the claims processing time.

When I called to find out specifics, the person who answered was very short in her answers and kept on giving me the company line, "We need detailed notes to verify pre-existing conditions before we consider the claim". There are no notes and pre-existing conditions on a 6 month puppy and I am not asking them to pay for an extensive treatment. All I am asking for is reimbursement for the treatment of three dog bites that required sutures.

    Hi Cristian,

It looks like the first vet visit was under a different name, and in January of 2018, which was several months after the purchase of the policy. We are trying to get the detailed chart notes for a wellness exam that would have occurred prior to the purchase of the policy, or during the waiting periods, since a requirement of the policy is having a vet visit on record 12 months prior to the purchase, or within the 14 day illness waiting period. We did receive a summary from Pup Squad that referred to a visit at North Durham, so we have send several requests to North Durham for the information.

A dog bite wound is considered an accident and can sometimes be processed without medical history, but we need to make sure that the qualifying exam for the insurance was done so we can ensure the policy is, and has been, legally in effect. If you are able to help us get any detailed chart notes from any exams Hank might have had at North Durham, that would speed the process along. Otherwise, we will continue with another follow up to see if we can obtain that information.

I have Embrace Pet Insurance on my 3 dogs. One of my dogs was diagnosed with lymphoma and is currently in chemotherapy. To minimize the expense to me, my vet allowed me to give the oral chemo to her at home instead of bringing her into the vet hospital for the treatment. Embrace would not insure the treatment since it was administered at home. If I would have brought my dog to the vet for the treatment, it would have been covered. I received an email from Embrace stating this.

I find this unacceptable but since I am currently going through treatment, I can't change insurance carriers for all of my dogs until my insurance comes up for renewal. Be sure to read the fine print in the insurance policy. From now, I will have to bring my dog into the vet's office for all of her treatments. The chemo drug is ** 40mg Mini-tabs #5, **, also known as ** among other names, is a medication used as chemotherapy and to suppress the immune system. As chemotherapy it is used to treat lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, small cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, and sarcoma. And the ** 40mg Tablets #1. They are more concerned with rules than your pet's well-being, so beware.

    Hi Annie,

I took a look at your coverage, and it looks like you opted out of the prescription drug coverage when you purchased your policy online in 2014 - that is what would cover any FDA approved take home medications for a covered accident or illness.

I'm glad we've been able to reimburse several thousand dollars to help with Bina and Zahra's conditions over the years, and I am sorry that the Rx coverage option was not selected. You are able to add it on now if you'd like - it would not be able to cover prescriptions for existing conditions (even though we are covering the conditions), but if anything new were to come up, you'd have that coverage in place.

Please give us a call if you'd like to add the prescription coverage on to your policy, and we would be happy to set that up for you.

    Hi Denise,

I'm so sorry for your frustrations, it looks like the vet clinic has sent us the chart notes for the recent visits, but not the first two that happened in 2018. They've told us they won't send us anything else, so we've hit a bit of a speed bump.

If you are able to ask them for the chart notes for June 19th, 2018 and October 20th, 2018 and send them to us directly, we will be able to complete the current claims.

I do see you've been communicating with one of our Claims Administrators and asked her to contact the vet, but they have told us that they will not send us anything else, so this might have to go through you.

You can contact me directly, or you can stay in touch with Kelsey.

Once we have those chart notes, we won't need to ask for any more medical history!

On April 1, I took my cat in for a vet appointment and I was told she was in kidney failure and would need kitty dialysis to survive. The estimate was $4500 for 5 days at the emergency vet. I called Embrace and they stated that although they cannot confirm or deny coverage over the phone, the treatment should be covered if I filed a claim for it. Sadly, my cat did not respond well to treatment and after a day had passed, they recommended euthanasia. The total vet bills came to $1900. I submitted the claim and it was accepted almost immediately. They covered 80% of the cost, less the deductible, and I received payment within days.

Having pet insurance allowed me to go forward to do everything I could to save my beloved kitty. Even though I wasn't able to save her, I am comforted knowing I did everything I could to save her, and Embrace covered most of the cost associated with the treatment. I would recommend Embrace Pet Insurance to anyone who has a pet.

My dog was diagnosed with a cruciate ligament tear, and the diagnosis was my first claim. This claim initially took WAY too long and the communication with me (or complete lack thereof) about what was causing the hold up was extremely frustrating. Every time I called in, a different person gave me a different reason and then claimed to resolve it, only for nothing to be updated and the claim to not be processed. In fact, the first time it was processed, it was declined due to the processor not reading the date of the invoice, but rather reading the date of her vaccinations that is logged on all invoices. That type of mistake is pure laziness.

After multiple calls and chats with various representatives, the claim was finally approved. After that, it was smooth sailing. Her surgery claim was approved quickly and efficiently, although I’ve realized that I must submit all claims myself instead of allowing my vet to submit them directly, as your company claims to have never received the documents directly from the vet, despite them sending the documents via multiple methods on multiple occasions. The reimbursement check was sent out quickly and received quickly, so overall, the frustrations were worth it.

Took until January before hearing back from the CSR at Embrace that they wanted more doctor's notes even though I was way past their "waiting" period. Sent in a year's worth of doctor's notes of vaccines and one previous visit for an ear infection.

SUDDENLY they "excluded" pretty much every.little.thing my dog MIGHT have -- she had a little tartar on her teeth (SHE'S 10 for god's sakes!) so they eliminated ANY mouth or tooth or tongue related problems as "pre-existing" - then her limp was called "arthritis" by Embrace staff - which was later invalidated by an ortho vet specialist as NOT being arthritis - but they still made EVERY possible limb and back injury or ailment as "pre-existing". Now ALL dermatological problems and any muscle/tendon/bone problems are now "pre-existing"!!!! Crap company that does everything to NOT pay a claim. I have since sent in a complaint with my state's insurance commissioner. This is NOT insurance when they refuse to honor a legitimate claim as advertised. Response from Embrace Pet Insurance

    Hi Jia,

I wasn't able to find a policy under your name or email address, but I hope I can help with some general answers about our policies.

We request your pet's history at the end of your waiting period - from there, if we don't get it, we just wait until the first claim comes in to follow up. On a ten year old dog, we normally suggest a Medical History Review right off the bat, but without your policy in front of me, I can't tell how the policy was purchased (phone or online).

Our definition of pre-existing from our Terms and Conditions is:

    PART I – DEFINITIONS 28. Pre-existing Condition(s) means:

    a. a Chronic Condition observed by you or your Veterinary Provider prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet(s) and any related conditions; or

    b. an Illness or Injury that first occurred or showed Clinical Signs prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet and any related conditions.

Undiagnosed conditions with the same Clinical Signs as those in a. or b. above are also considered pre-existing.

If you'd like to email me at djl@embracepetinsurance.com I can look at your policy specifically and send you the chart notes we used to do that review. We never diagnose anything, we only base our decisions on what the vet(s) have written in their chart notes. We also have an appeal process if you disagree with the findings.

We pay out on over 93% of the claims that are sent to us, so legitimate claims are covered and paid.

I have never felt so wronged by a company more than what I endured with this company. They are extremely fraudulent. I was paying for pet insurance that was not even covered on my policy. (Going back)... They required a pre-policy medical exam before starting coverage. They stated that they would contact me if they were not able to obtain it. Since I did not hear from them, I assumed they were able to get my dog's record thus charging me for a premium policy. A year later when I filed a claim, they reported that they needed a medical exam. They had ME go to my vet and request that it be faxed to them. This made me quite upset as I had to do extra work for a service I am paying them for, in addition to them not doing their end in obtaining the items.

So, despite the medical exam stating my dog is in a healthy state, a doctors statement saying they found something irregularly shaped VOIDED my entire coverage. It was considered a preexisting condition according to Embrace. NOW, if I had known that certain things were not covered, I would have pursued other options (i.e., increasing my policy plan, changing coverages, etc.).

So for the entire 15 months of paying out of pocket, they tell me that they can't do anything because it is the customer's responsibility to get that exam in. This poses an extreme predicament as THEY were the ones who stated that they would get the documents and would not start my coverage until then. Additionally, I don't even know what I was paying for. When I asked them, they couldn't tell me. Please be advised as there are many scam insurances out there. If you want to work extra hard and diligent where the company provides false lies and advertisements, then Embrace may be for you. If however, you want a pet insurance company that is honest and adheres to their terms and condition, then choose someone else.

    Hi Maryrose,

I'm so sorry for your frustration. We try to make our process as clear as possible by sending an email the day you purchase the policy online titled "Just a few more questions from Embrace". In this email, we ask for any vet clinics your pets have been to. Once we receive that information, we reach out to the vet to get the medical history to keep on file for when your first claim is submitted.

In this case, we didn't receive a response with your vet clinics, so we weren't able to contact them.

We add this note in that email to let you know that it's ok if we don't receive the medical history right away, we will still get it at the time of your first claim:

"Just so you know: We will need your pet’s medical history to process your first claim. Having this in advance will speed up the claims process so you get reimbursed faster (yay!). You do not need to do anything at this time. After your waiting period is over, we will fax your veterinary hospital and request your pet’s medical history. If we don’t hear back from your vet, we’ll follow-up with them at the time of your first claim."

Since we didn't receive the names of your vet clinics until this year, we had no chance to request the information preemptively. However, when we received your claim, we did fax and call the vet clinics to get the history - we don't rely on Pet Parents to obtain that information unless we have trouble getting it.

I hope that clarifies things, and let me know if you have any questions.

They always claimed there was a pre-existing condition. Our dog had had diarrhea once as a symptom in old records - and this meant that when she subsequently developed bloody stool and needed to be seen multiple times — this was a “pre-existing condition”. Despite multiple pleas from us and our vet in personalized notes describing why the two were unrelated, Embrace didn’t give us a penny. Their customer service was also horrendous. Long wait times to hear that our claims had been denied only added insult to injury. Buyer beware, don’t make the same mistake we did giving them hundreds of dollars to receive NOTHING in return.

    Hi Jessica,

I'm sorry for your experience. Undiagnosed symptoms create broader preexisting conditions because of the lack of diagnosis. Since the initial symptom of diarrhea had no diagnosis, we didn't have any clinical evidence to show that the second occurrence was a separate diagnosis. If the initial cause of diarrhea were noted as Giarda, for instance, then only Giarda would be considered preexisting and other diagnoses would be coverable.

He passed puppy wellness exam and had no pre existing conditions for the 12 months prior to the day I became a customer. He passed the accident and illness waiver period. I took him in to complete an optional orthopedic waiver to reduce wait time from 6 months to immediate coverage. Found out, because of the optional waiver exam, my puppy had hip discomfort and did not score within normal limits. I did not submit the waiver request and chose to wait the waiting period.

My puppy became sick with a stomach bug and I submitted claim to Embrace. They performed a medical chart review and used the results of the optional orthopedic waiver test against me, saying it was a pre-existing condition. I am absolutely disgusted with this company. I requested all my money back because I am an absolutely dissatisfied customer. They will only prorate me the remainder of the uncovered month. So disgusted with this company.

I see your other claims were covered, it looks like Hardy doesn't have any preexisting issues except for hip dysplasia.

I bought the monthly embrace plan for my corgi in 2015 when I first adopted him. I adopted him when he was 6.5 years when he needed a new home and improved care. I followed all of the requirements Embrace asked. When I adopted him he had a minor tooth issue. Due to this, nothing relating to his teeth/gums have been covered, resulting in more than $5,000 in out of pocket costs. The monthly premium has increased from 2015-2019 but the coverage has so far be unhelpful and a drain. This might be a good insurance if you are adopting a puppy, but I would recommend another insurer if you are adopting an older pup that needs a new start. Embrace will not be helpful.

In May, they added a reminder to call me at the end of the year to help me remember to update my policy as we discussed, and sure enough, they reached out in December and got it taken care of even though the original rep was on maternity leave!! I wish my human insurance coverage was so easy and helpful!! And I don’t receive annoying emails all the time! They are there when you need them, and quiet when you don’t. We had rescued 2 pit bull-mastiff-lab mix puppies from a local Humane Society. Both were in great health but when one of them, Hamilton, developed a limp when he was a year and a half, we took him to the local vet who diagnosed him with a TPLO of the right hind leg, basically, as I understand it, he tore the tendon in the knee. He needed surgery so we took him to a nearby vet who specializes in sports injuries for dogs.

Hamilton came through surgery great, and then several weeks later did the same to his left hind leg. So back to the vet we went to get that repaired. Both surgeries were covered by Embrace. They paid 80% of the total bill - both for the local vet who first diagnosed the problem and for the vet who actually did the surgery. Without this insurance, we wouldn't have been able to afford the cost and may have had to have taken other measures. Now we have a dog with two bionic legs and is a great and friendly part of our family. I would recommend Embrace Pet Insurance to everyone.

My very first pug, Ping, was 12.5 when she passed in 2013. In her later years she suffered with a UTI that wouldn't go away. Her vet bills were very expensive, as you can imagine. She needed an Ultra Sound for almost $2K. Whether it would have helped or not I have no idea. During this illness she was on expensive medication, special diet food purchased via my vet, and constant urine tests and cultures. As a retired individual I did the best I could for Ping. As an aging pug, she also developed spinal stenosis and lost control of her back legs and bladder. At the time, wheels for dogs weren't as popular and affordable as they are today. I lost my beautiful baby when I felt her quality of life was gone. I swore at that moment that I would never ever have a pug without purchasing insurance for it.

It just so happened that my vet had a mat on his counter which advertised Embrace Pet Insurance. I remembered that when I adopted two rescue pugs 6 months later. While the cost was around 2K for both dogs, my peace of mind was bought, too. It had wellness care which included dental and OTC items, doctor visits for illness and catastrophic care. I had no doubt that this was the way to go for me and my "girls". I now have only 1 pug, but I know she is Embraced! This is long winded I know but I can't say enough about the peace of mind Embrace has given me. I swear by this company and recommend it to others 100%.

I recently received my renewal quote and I was quite stunned to see that cost of my plan for my two dogs is going from $1292.09 to $1679.71. That's an unexpected 30% percent increase that I do not think is fair. I have read your website on what you say is the cause of premium increases, and I have read that you won't increase my premium just because I claimed (which I have for 2 separate knee surgeries for my dog Sienna and emergency visits for Lucca), but I find it hard to believe that I am being upcharged significantly just because my pets got older (from 2-3 yrs for Sienna and from 1 to 2 yrs for Lucca), or because of an increase in veterinary costs, or overall trends in the pet population.

In fact I think you are only charging me that much more because I have made significant claims the past two years. How else could you justify charging somebody 30% more from one year to the next? If you did this to all your clients you would be out of business. I am aware insurance for dogs is not cheap and I expect to pay a hefty premium to protect my dogs but I can not budget 30% increases every year. My question to you is do I have to anticipate these large increases every year from now on or can I expect more modest increases in the future? Because if you are going to up my premium that much every year I will not be able afford your insurance anymore and that would be very disappointing as I would no longer be able to have that safety net for my beloved animals.

I just need to know because last year I budgeted for a bill that would be around $1300, not one that that is almost $1700. What is the average percentage increase from year to year for all your customers? I just need to know what I can expect from year to year. If they are modest increases I can handle that, and I expect it, but you can not expect somebody to be hit with a 30% increase and not be upset. It is not fair.

I have decided to rate Embrace with 3 stars or “Satisfied with the experience” because I did have to make claims and you did help cover a significant portion of some very expensive vets bills (of which I am grateful), but I have to let you know that I am not happy with this situation. I’m even thinking of making some complaints with my local politicians and The BBB.

You can not make statements on your website that say my premiums don’t increase because I have made claims, and then charge me 30% more and then say to me its because my pet got older from 2 to 3 years old or 1 to 2 years old, or because vet costs increased. Premiums are not supposed to go up that much for anything, let alone pet insurance. Please mark me as satisfied with the experience of making a claim, but very dissatisfied with the transparency of how you decide to make premium changes for your customers. I’ll say it again, a 30% increase on anything is not fair!

In 2009, I got my first Cocker Spaniel, and shortly thereafter I joined a cocker spaniel forum to learn more about the breed, grooming tips, etc. I learned a lot from this forum, particularly that cockers are predisposed to a variety of health issues, many of which are extremely expensive to treat. The other thing that I learned was that many of the owners obtained pet insurance for their cockers, but had mixed reviews as to their reputations. One company that kept getting excellent reviews was Embrace, and that is the company that I chose for my dog when she was a couple of years old. Their reputation for paying based on actual costs, and for not having breed-specific exclusions were two positive features that I liked.

Fast forward several claim-free years, and Gromit tore the ccl in her knee, requiring surgery. The cost of the surgery and follow-up exams was over $4,000. My first pleasant surprise was that since I had not filed any prior claims, my deductible was automatically reduced! Next, the claims that I submitted were not only paid quickly and without question, but the agent suggested that I set up direct deposit so that I could receive reimbursement even faster. As Gromit has gotten older, the premiums have increased. But the peace of mind that Embrace has provided is worth it to me. I didn't have to hesitate about getting Gromit the surgery that she needed regardless of the cost. And watching her run around and play, pain free and fully-healed, warms my heart.

Embrace was an excellent choice for my dog. I never wanted to worry about Penny’s care if she needed any emergency service or expensive treatment. I went with Embrace because it offered a flexible plan. Unfortunately we have needed to use it twice - first for a mast cell removal and then for a CCL repair. Both times everyone I dealt with at Embrace was attentive and compassionate. I received my reimbursement checks and I am very happy with Embrace Pet Insurance.

I first purchased Embrace insurance in 2014 - high deductible plans just in case something major happened. I carried insurance on my dogs for 3 years before I made my first claim. Then in 1.5 years I had 3 major claims on two different dogs. Embrace was simple to work with and there were no surprises. Questions were answered quickly and claims were paid promptly for the amount that I expected (bill - deductible & copay). I’ve been very satisfied with the service that I’ve gotten with Embrace.

I have had my Rottweiler continuously insured by Embrace Pet Insurance since she was a puppy starting in December 2013. The annual claim limit is $15,000 with a $500 deductible and 90% reimbursement. When I took out the policy, I was aware that premiums would increase as my dog aged. However, I was not prepared for the amount of the increases. The initial annual premium was $745 in December 2013. Her complete premium history is: 2013 - $745, 2014 - $827.56, 2015 - $1,078.41, 2016 - $1,153.91, 2017 - $1,358.10, 2018 - 1,453.18, 2019 - $1,556.74). Over my dog's life so far, I have paid $8,172.90 in premiums. I also asked what the annual premium would be today for a new policy a 10-year-old Rottweiler - $2,103.

After the first policy year, I have not had any claims. The claims in the first year were for minor things to be expected for a puppy. When asked about the history of premium increases, Embrace told me that the State of Illinois allowed an increase of up to 35% per year. Obviously there are exceptions, but I think most people would be better off setting aside money and saving it for future vet bills rather than buying pet insurance.

I used Embrace because I was referred through USAA. This was a mistake. I got insurance for my new 6 month old golden retriever at a friend's recommendation whose 10 year old golden recently had to have a few surgeries for thousands of dollars. I read all the paperwork carefully, knowing that any preexisting conditions found would not be covered. I was informed that medical records would be procured from our vet to determine this. I gave them the vets information and release for them to receive the medical records.

18 months of paying for insurance later and I submitted a claim for an ear infection. I received an email stating that they found notes from prior to the policy start date that indicated my dog would not be covered for anything relating to his hips (hip dysphasia, etc, ie. any major surgery that you would want to have pet insurance for in the future). Embrace took my insurance money for almost two years without verifying that my dog could even be covered by reviewing his medical record. Customer support agents were unapologetic, defensive, and rude. It’s not just mismanagement, it’s unethical. It’s not the type of experience you expect as a USAA customer. I hope that USAA pays attention to the poor experiences their members are having with Embrace and chooses a new partner.

I signed up with Embrace thinking I would be covered for anything that came up based on the policy. I took my pooch in for a vet visit during the waiting period (which is total stupidity - I hear of people waiting until after the waiting period to take their pet in so they can be sure they get covered, but I did not). Because he was tested for a UTI and the vet mentioned ectopic ureter, it was not tested or confirmed, it was a simple statement of possible causes. Now that I have gone in and confirmed this is what he has, well after the waiting period, the insurance will not cover an ectopic ureter surgery which is nearly 10K!

They want your money but will not cover anything so far. They have stated that my pet is not covered for any of the claims I have submitted. He is a year old and I am a loving caring pet owner and make sure to take him to the vet for anything that concerns me, but this has now been to my own detriment because now I cannot get him covered for anything but vaccinations. VERY Disappointed that I chose Embrace. What am I paying for? I will not renew. USAA should work with insurance companies that are a bit more reputable. Don't waste your money on this ins company.

I originally purchased this policy because most things associated with USAA are top notch. I have a 9.5 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which are all genetically predisposed to heart issues. When I reviewed the website for Embrace, it stated all genetically linked illnesses are covered. PERFECT. However, after sending my pet's medical records in advance for a medical review, I had different responses. Each person I spoke with, gave me a different answer. One would say, "No his potential heart murmur would not be covered, but other issues that may occur down the line will". Then the next rep stated, "Since it has not been diagnosed yet, or confirmed by a cardiologist, it should all be covered", and then finally, "No, nothing associated with his heart would be covered". I can understand why so many claims are denied when there is so much confusion on what is covered or not.

When I spoke to a rep regarding a medical review, they stated "we will review it after the 14 day waiting period, and then it will take 7-15 days". I pointed out that is after the 30 day full refund policy. She stated she would do the best she could to expedite it. Inevitably what I got was, that it depends on each claim and who is the analyst as to whether or not it would be covered. I also found out that apparently Vet Techs review your claim, and make these decisions. Personally, when it is a matter of potentially thousands of dollars, I would want a full fledged vet to review.

Since you submit your claim after the fact, you can't make a logical decision as to if you can truly afford the care. Since you don't know if your claim will be honored or not till after you made your claim. You are reimbursed. If they handle their claims like they handled my questions, it is a crapshoot if you are going to be paying out of pocket, on top of what you paid for your policy. Just seems shady and also predatory practices to sell insurance to pet lovers.

I had my Bullmastiff insured with Embrace for the last 7 years, since he was a 4 month old puppy. While premiums have been going up over the years, the increases were generally reasonable. However, I just got my policy renewal notice and my premium DOUBLED! I got the accompanying email about how they've reexamined their actuarial models based off breed, age and location. Here's the thing; I understand pet insurance is getting more expensive across the board. I would understood price of insurance gradually rising over the dog's age and could have even dealt with a 20-30% increase. But doubling the price as my dog moved into the senior category is unconscionable in my view.

They know full well that at that age, you can't shop around for another policy elsewhere. You basically have to take the price increase or drop insurance. They also know full well if they started increasing the rates a few years ago gradually, I might have shopped around and moved policies while I still good. Waiting until my dog got to this age and hitting me with a 100% premium increase has nothing to do with revised actuarial assumptions. It's getting every dollar out of an owner possible once they know you have no other options. Shame on Embrace. I will never insure another pet with you again.

While the initial experience definitely left a bad taste in my mouth, I do appreciate their willingness to reach out and repair relations. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend Embrace, I do intend to finish out my annual policy.

    Original Review: Nov. 5, 2018

I read many of the mixed reviews for Embrace prior to signing up; it still seemed like a better value for my dog than a similar policy that I already had from a competitor for my cat, so I decided to call and double-check their cancellation policy before purchasing. I knew that my dog needed his annual booster shots, and wanted to make sure that I had adequate wellness coverage before bringing him in for what was going to be an expensive appointment.

The representative was very friendly - I asked her about the payout times, and about cancellation, specifically as it relates to the wellness claims. She said that I could cancel at all times, and I'd receive a refund if I wasn't satisfied in 30 days. Additionally, she said that if I used benefits and then canceled the wellness policy before the end of the year that I wouldn't be able to sign up again, but that there would be no financial penalties incurred.

My dog's appointment was scheduled for the day that I signed up, which was poor planning on my part -- but I got off the phone and started my policy. I then reached out to make sure that the wellness benefit was still valid from the date of sign-up, like they said it was in their advertisements. I didn't hear anything for nearly two days. I canceled my vet appointment, because I wanted to be 100 percent sure that I'd receive a reimbursement for it.

I finally received confirmation from them about the start of my policy, and took my dog in for his appointment. I received two invoices from my vet, one for the vaccinations and one for a stool sample that I collected later in the day. I filed the two claims separately, as requested by Embrace, that very same day. I received a confirmation on the first invoice, but nothing on the second invoice.

After waiting more than a week, I finally received a notice that my payout was approved, and that they were mailing me a check; despite the fact that I'd set up direct deposit when I enrolled. I called and asked them to cancel the check and instead debit the funds through my direct deposit. The representative said that she could do this, but that it may take longer. I said that this was fine, and that I'd still like to do it (I spend much of my time traveling for work and likely won't be in town to retrieve the check for several weeks after its arrival). She returned to the line after a lengthy hold and said that she can't cancel the check, after all - that it violates their policy. She also told me that the second invoice wasn't processed because they couldn't open the file -- which was the first I'd heard of any technical troubles on their end.

I received a request to file a survey directly after our conversation, and I answered the survey honestly, expressing my dissatisfaction. I then received a rude and threatening email, saying that if I canceled they'd collect any 'outstanding fees' I 'owed' them. I'm still fighting with many of their representatives and upper management members, trying to receive a single payout and trying to have my second claim processed. This is a perfect example of a predatory business taking advantage of people trying to give their pets the best possible care. Avoid Embrace Pet Insurance at all costs! There are so many competitors that offer better care without the horrendous customer service experience.

This company is extremely shady. I felt like they just used the most roundabout ways to try to say that every symptom my cat had was a pre-existing condition. I work in the medical field so I am smart enough to know that they were stretching. I would say don't waste your money. They're going to reject everything anyways. I got a pat answer response from them when I wrote a review on another site and I emailed them the following:

I wanted to reach out to you regarding a review I left on Yelp, and your subsequent comment. At this point, I have just discontinued insurance with your company, and I also do plan on writing as many reviews as possible online, as I feel the consumer should have the right to know what they're getting into. I wanted to address a comment you made. You mentioned that a pre-existing condition is any diagnosis made prior to the initiation of an insurance policy and it's associated causative clinical manifestation, which I completely understand. However I want to point out that you guys just denied one of my cases where my cat had diarrhea. The Insurance explanation is that diarrhea is a symptom of pancreatitis. Interestingly, my cat doesn't even have a definitive diagnosis of pancreatitis.

On one clinic note, a vet had indicated that his enzyme levels were slightly increased and it may be early signs of pancreatitis, though he said he was not worried. However, even assuming he actually does have pancreatitis, this is a classic example where there was no suggestion whatsoever that in this instance my cat had diarrhea because of pancreatitis. I think any educated person knows that diarrhea can happen for a variety of reasons, including eating bad food or a GI infection. It is not my intent to go out there and say bad things about a company with no cause. However I have to let you know that I find it appalling that you are preying upon innocent people who are vulnerable due to their sick pets. While an insurance company, like any business, needs to worry about the bottom line and make a profit, it shouldn't be your intent to do so in a dishonest way.

First Embrace changed the wording of the claim to say "vomiting" so that they wouldn't have to cover it. After appeal, they went back and said that diarrhea was also a pre-existing condition even though they had paid or applied to deductible on previous claims. Have had Embrace a few years for several pets. Also have had pet insurance from other companies over the years. First thing is that there’s no transparency. Other companies list the claim charges submitted and then list what’s been paid on each and what was excluded. Embrace just sends you a check with no info on the claim being paid— just a claim number. Neither is there any info on their site itemizing the amounts. Half the time, their website portal didn’t work for nearly a year, and even after that overhaul, it’s been mostly useless. It just tells you what a claim number was on a date and the name of your pets. I find this very dishonest. You have to dig out your own invoice copy and do all the arithmetic yourself. No thank you.

Second, one hand doesn't know what the other is doing at this company. I’d almost always get an email saying “more info was needed” and would call and reach someone else. Then I’d be told everything was cleared up only to get an email from another worker saying the opposite. In some cases, email sent would say a claim “was covered” only to find on the useless website buried somewhere was that the claim hadn’t been covered because the rep had misread an medical report and had excluded everything. In other cases, I’d find out months later that some claim had been languishing unpaid because some small detail had been missing (according to Embrace that is) but nobody bothered to ask me. It’s always “log into your account to see the claim details,” and then there’s very little there that explains anything.

For the high premiums paid, the customer has to do extra work on almost every claim to point out errors. That is, if you catch them to begin with since Embrace provides zero accounting to you if what they paid. The reps are usually nice, but that doesn’t make up for the rest. A poorly organized company that robs you of time and directs you to a website that seems to have little function. Don’t know how this company ever got rave reviews.

My experience with Embrace has been a negative one. Months of claims went unanswered until I had to contact someone myself. What's worse is that none of the "so called" covered issues and visits were actually covered. So I canceled my policy out of frustration for giving this company free money while getting absolutely nothing in return. That said, every single person I talked to from the very beginning until the last day, was very professional and extremely courteous and understanding of the situation. Definitely not a recommendation to anyone looking for pet insurance. I have proof of the 10's of claims that were denied for the years 2017/2018. (100% of them).

I was shocked when I saw so many negative reviews for Embrace Pet Insurance. I purchased a policy several years ago but didn't need to use it until this month when one of my dogs suffered from a torn ACL. The TPLO surgery cost just under $4000. Not only did Embrace pay all that I expected, but I received the money in less than 2 weeks from the surgery!!! On the several occasions that I've called, I've spoken to a real person who is both polite and professional. This insurance is everything that I hoped it would be when I purchased it.

I chose Embrace Pet Insurance in June 2017 for my 5 year old german shepherd. He had no history of any health problems except two ear infections, both caused by swimming too much in the summertime, and itchy skin from the chlorine water. It was my first experience buying pet insurance and probably my last because Embrace drag their feet from the beginning. I paid over $800 and they have yet to do a thing except ask for more and more paperwork, which has already been faxed to them, but apparently they toss it in the garbage and, months later, contact me again for the very same thing. I am so disappointed in their lack of coverage and the headache they have caused, and I feel duped. Today, after they are finally paying attention to my account, I have received three emails, two saying they are paying a very small amount for two of the appointments we made in August and September 2017.

They are also considering the ear infection and the fact that my dog was overweight (he's since lost 13 lbs) as "pre-existing conditions." Never mind that we had to have the dog checked by a vet for medical conditions before they would insure him. Or that they have sat on my claims for months; or the fact that they would never pay up if I wasn't contacting them again and again and still trying to get them to do something! Anything! Today, I asked for my money back. Apparently they have sent me two checks for $13, both, I believe for the very same claim! I want my money back since I have done all the work and have had additional expense for vet appointments because they insisted on the medical exam in the beginning, and seem to be ignoring the results of that exam. Please -- do not waste money on Embrace Pet Insurance!

I would not recommend this company. My dog has been with them for 1 year with no issues. They recently reviewed his "temporary exclusion" of an ear infection and although my dog met the 12 month requirement of being ear infection free. They are now claiming his ear cleaner is causing the "exclusion" to continue due to one FDA ingredient. My vet wrote a letter indicating the cleaner was not treatment, but preventative maintenance and they do not care - still excluded. Even though my veterinarian was VERY clear in the letter my dog had not been seen for an ear issue in over 12 months. They clearly will do whatever they can to find loopholes so they can exclude coverage. Would hate to see how they act when it comes time to pay a claim.

Do not waste your time or money. We signed up with Embrace based on the fact that USAA recommended them and USAA has always been great. Huge mistake and wish I had done more research on my own before electing to go with Embrace. Their staff is rude and must be much smarter than any vet out there because they claim to know more about medical conditions than any of the 4 vets my dog has seen. They even went as far as to say that one case of diarrhea and vomiting represents a pre-existing condition for when my dog was diagnosed with IBD a year later. Imagine that... one time being sick and a year later that one thing means your vet wasn’t smart enough to realize that a dog getting sick one time meant they had IBD that whole time. Do yourself a favor and don’t ever consider this company unless of course you are a fan of wasting your time and money.

I purchased Embrace insurance my dog Trooper. I have filed many many claims. I have spent over $10,000 on his medical bills. I paid $99 a month to Embrace and they have rejected EVERY SINGLE CLAIM. They have not paid me a penny back. I adopted Trooper as a senior. He was 11 years old. I took him to the vet and did a full profile on him: Echo, blood work, Ultrasound - everything and I sent the results to Embrace. I was operating in good faith that though his eye problem and his heart would not be covered any new illness would be. They gladly took my payments. They now claim that every unrelated illness is somehow preexisting. Save your money- this is a scam.

My wife and I were remiss in filing our healthcare claims for our English Bulldog and our first claim filing covered an 8 month period. The receipts for vet care totaled about $1800. Embrace found ways to avoid EVERY claim and reimburse us $0. NOTHING!! OMG!!! Now that I have had this shockingly disappointing experience, I revisited the Embrace website. WOW, talk about saying so much about nothing!! They tout about paying for "Routine Care" when it is actually only paying you back using $$ you deposit with them!!

NOW I can see through the slick marketing claims they use to dupe people into thinking they would actually be reimbursed for the healthcare of their pet. Just like the Liberty Auto Insurance commercial we've all seen. When the policyholder is denied coverage under his insurance policy, he is told that he bought the wrong coverage policy. He then corrects them by saying "No, I bought from the wrong insurance company." I feel the same way!!!

This company needs to be investigated. I made a mistake and chose them as a pet insurance. My pet went to the ER and they kept placing her claim in pending status that it needs more investigation. I have to call everybody to make sure they received all documents necessary and they still won’t activate look at the claims. They are trying to avoid to pay for the ER bill. It’s been over 2 months since we filed the claim. I’m pretty sure they are actively trying to find any ways to denied our claim. Just called the rep today and asked what’s going on with our claim. She just said, "We have all the documents" and needs to review it. Seriously!!! How long does it take!?

This is a highly unethical company and I wish I would have done more research before I insured my dogs; the other similar reviews would have surely kept me away. Both of my dogs have had claims rejected in the past months for a variety of reasons- all of them a stretch to fit with the coverage policies. In the end, I wound up paying the full cost of our vet visits, plus the monthly insurance payments. I was better off just paying the vet bills out of pocket to begin with. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Without looking at reviews first (mistake!), we enrolled three dogs. On our very first visit, I filed a claim for one dog who had a cut paw. It was rejected. Upon inquiry, they first said it was for orthopedic issue. We literally had to explain that orthopedics had nothing to do with a cut paw. We spoke to another agent who stated that her paw COULD BE a result of a dermatological issue since it was in her records that she had an ear infection 5 months prior. Seriously? Quite a stretch, you think? After reading reviews that said the same things, we immediately canceled. They will try to use everything in your pet's vet record to claim anything is a pre-existing condition and deny your claim. Save yourself the trouble and go with Petplan.

Like any insurance you need to read all the fine print and fully understand what you are getting. I made this mistake particularly with the waiting period and pre existing conditions. That said, I agree completely with what other reviewers have said about pre existing conditions. My vet also had noted some minor lumps and bumps on my older dog during a wellness exam and assured me that they were fatty tumors. Fast forward to a situation where an oral lump was discovered. Vet was concerned and wanted a biopsy. You guessed it, Embrace rejected it. So be aware, anything your vet writes down they will use it as a reason not to cover it. For accidents etc, there was no problem.
