Our dog's last meal that she ate was Beneful regular dog food purchased from Wal-Mart. She began vomiting, became progressively sicker, and died 3 days later. We are heartbroken. She was a healthy 8-year-old dachshund. We took her to the vet, and they told us to give her pedicile. We thought we were buying good, safe food for her and have fed her Beneful for years. The last thing I would want to do is to say something about the food that wasn't true, and we cannot rule out the possibility it was not the food; but if this dog food is bad, people should be warned. I found this site by searching for a recall or possible health warnings. I wish I would have known Beneful may not have been a good choice before now.

Beneful dog food needs to be discontinued. My dog Brandy started vomiting her Beneful dog food and then wouldn't touch it for days. Finally, we started feeding her chicken and rice, which she ate at first, but then she wouldn't even eat that. We took her to the vet, and she was diagnosed with kidney failure. Vet said probable cause was toxin in dog food. **

About two or three months ago, we started our seven-year-old Lab on Beneful. At the end of one month or so, she had a violent seizure and another one about a month later. Our vet started her on phenobarbitals at a dose of two pills per day. After one week, we were told to reduce her pills to one in the morning and one half at night. On Oct. 9th, she had a slight seizure and another one on the 10th. On the afternoon of the 10th, she had two bad seizures so the vet kept her overnight. He ran an IV with charcoal through her that evening and again the next morning. He ran blood work and found an infection. She came home very happy and will be taking 2 tablets for seizures and an antibiotic.

My healthy, 5-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has eaten Beneful Healthy Weight for the last 2 years. Last night, we opened a new bag and gave it to her. 30 minutes after she ate, she became very thirsty and then she threw up and passed away. We are heartbroken! Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone contacted Beneful?

We have a very healthy, happy lab named Belle. We started her on Beneful a little while ago. She never showed any signs of problems before. One day, two months ago, she had a full-fledged seizure. Then two months later, she had another one. She is now on meds for epilepsy. She just started her seizure meds a little over a week ago. Today is October 10th and my husband started researching reasons why dogs develop seizures. He found a website that had 190 complaints about Beneful. A lot of the complaints were about seizures. People in these complaints contacted Purina and they denied any problems with this food. You must recall Beneful before another healthy dog like mine gets sick. I hope we can reverse the effects this food has had on our dog because if she dies, it will be my fault for feeding her this food. Please recall this food.

I have a Chihuahua and English Schnauzer and they have been eating Beneful for years. And for the last 2 weeks, they won't eat a lot and when they do eat, they throw up. I called my vet and they told me to feed them rice and chicken with no skin. Does anybody know where to call to make a complaint?

Bad dog food! I’ve been feeding it for 3 years to my Bassett and other two and my 12-year-old lab (who died last week of weird causes - vet did x-ray). She stopped eating Beneful and would not eat it! Then 5 days later, she died gasping on the floor! She was gagging, liver or kidney failure! Now, my Bassett won't eat her dog food, and she is throwing up blood - other two have refused to eat it too. Recall Beneful! Why isn't Purina doing anything about this? It is not the dog; it is their crappy dog food making dogs sick! Check into it and do something! I will never buy Purina products again! Unsafe!

I decided to start converting my 18-month-old Old English sheepdog Henry from puppy food to adult dog food. I decided on Beneful and started mixing puppy food/Beneful 2-1 for the first and then began increasing the Beneful. I started this two weeks ago. On Sunday night, the diarrhea started. By Monday morning, it was all over my house. There’s vomiting and more diarrhea continued all morning. I went to the vet at 10:30 am and he wasn't sure of the cause. He told me not to use Beneful and to use a good quality meat-based dog food.

We started feeding our 2 dogs Beneful from Costco in NYC. After a few weeks, the older dog (12 years) started to leave most of the food in the bowl. He is vomiting & has violent diarrhea. We stopped giving them the food, and we're taking him to the vet tomorrow morning! Stay away from this food!

I have four dogs of which I have always fed Purina products to. For the last 3 years they have been eating Fit-N-Trim. I thought I would try what I thought to be a better and more beneficial product to them and bought Beneful Healthy Weight. After about 2 weeks my younger dog who would normally eat anything started to refuse to eat. Then one of my older dogs started to vomit every night after eating - and not just once, but one night it was 7 times and this would continue until the next morning. Then one of my other dogs started to do the same. At that point, I decided to switch them back to Fit-N-Trim and all of a sudden the vomiting stopped and the other dog started eating again.

I saw on Golden Retriever Rescue site not to feed Beneful dog food to your dog. My 6-year-old Golden has been having bad skin infections, vomiting and seizures. I believe this was due to the dog food. I changed brands and she seems to be doing much better. Don't feed your dogs Beneful dog food. It will make them sick and give them bacterial infections.

We have two Jack Russels, both eight years old. We began feeding them Beneful Healthy Weight about two years ago and never really noticed any problems until this week. I had just purchased a new bag of the food from Wal-Mart. A few days ago, I came home from work to find seven (7!) piles of vomit in the living room. Only our Maggie had eaten her breakfast that morning. Charlie didn't touch his but it was still hard to say which was sick (if not both) because although Maggie was the only one that ate, it's unlikely of Charlie to not eat. Thinking maybe it was just a stomach bug, we took them off the food and fed them rice with chicken for two days, and they were both fine - no vomiting or diarrhea. So tonight, we decided to try to give them the Beneful again. They both ate it with their usual appetite, but sure enough, within no more than an hour of eating, Charlie was vomiting again. We decided to search online to see if there was possibly a recall, and came across all of these other complaints. A lot of them make mention of buying the food from Wal-Mart, and several within the month of September or late August, which is the same time I had purchased our new bag of food.

I have been buying your Beneful dry food for over a year and every time I buy a new bag, it doesn't even make it out to the car before it tears open. It is frustrating that I spend $16 on a bag of food and the material is so poor that it rarely makes it out of the grocery store.

My prayers and condolences are with those who have lost their fur babies from eating the Beneful dog food, and my prayers are with those whose babies are sick. I hope they are able to recover. I use the Beneful Baked Delight Dog Treats for my six-year old Chihuahua. I used to use the other Beneful treats until they switched to these. She is in good health; however, does have the hairball type cough others on this board have described. Are the treats included in the "Please to stop feeding Beneful"? Until I receive your feedback, I shall stop feeding them immediately. She only gets one a day as a noontime treat. Fortunately, she doesn't seem to be suffering any ill effects that are manifested externally. What are symptoms of liver and kidney failure that I should be aware of? Thank you for your input and time.

I am very upset with Beneful dog food. I bought their product because my dog did not want his dog food anymore, so I decided to try Beneful. He vomited constantly and lost a lot of weight, he also developed issues with his skin. I noticed this after about 2 weeks. I figured out that it must have been the food since that was the only change. I am now feeding him a new product and is much improved. I will never use any of their products again.

Kidney and liver failure due to Beneful - I just wanted to post my piece on this issue. About 3 weeks ago, my 3-year-old beagle/Pekingese mix came down with all the symptoms everyone has been posting about. Long story short, my very much loved dog suffered kidney and liver failure. He is now better but not after my fiancé and I spending our wedding fund of $6,000. He spent 4 nights in the hospital. As some of you have posted, I called Purina and got the same "Oh, I am sorry but we have heard nothing of this problem." I am going to my vet in the next few days to get their backing in filing a Federal Trade Commission complaint. I suggest everyone do the same. I am so sorry to all whose dogs did not make it. This is just awful. I am going to attempt to sue Purina to get my wedding fund back.

For the last month, my dogs have been vomiting and bad diarrhea all the time. The only food I was feeding for the last 2 years was Beneful. I started buying at Walmart about 2 months ago and that's when the problems started. I threw out 30lbs of it today and will never buy any of their products again! Is this making my dogs sick?

I bought Beneful Healthy Weight for my dog at the end of August. Immediately after feeding her the food, she became sick with the same symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting. I figured she may be just sick, but after a few days, it got worse. When I came home to several piles of you know what everywhere, I was concerned, she just does not do that. So, I did the whole rice thing and she got better and then started adding the dog food back in and she got sick again. I went and bought another food, did the rice thing and started her on this new food and no problems whatsoever. I called Purina and discussed this and they had actually told me they didn't have any other complaints about this food. Wow, I couldn't believe they lied that easily about it, and just brushed me off by "we will send you a refund". They have to know if something is wrong and the government needs to step up and test this stuff and find out what it is that is making the dogs sick.

I bought Beneful and mixed it with his regular dry food. Immediately, he stopped eating after the first time of him eating it. I couldn’t understand. He ate six cups of his regular Nutro dog food and then went to zero. I kept forcing him or trying, but he was very sick and I didn’t know how sick till I ended up at a vet. He was dehydrated and had bacteria in his stomach and a high fever. I thought he slacked off eating because a female nearby was in heat. Then after a week of not wanting to barely drink and by the time I realized he was sick, I rushed him to the vet. I bought Beneful at a Family Dollar store here in Gila Bend, Arizona. We are in this area for my husband’s work. I never feed him anything before other than his Nutro, which I buy at PetSmart in Phoenix, Arizona. I was running low and went to the store here and this small town - Phoenix is 50 miles away.

Beneful made my baby sick! I've used Beneful for my Maltipoo for several years with no problems. This last bag I bought was the healthy weight kind because the other kind was sold out. I noticed that he's been throwing up a lot lately. He has a very sensitive stomach anyway so I thought he had been receiving treats from the dinner table from the children. Now that I'm reading the other complaints, it all makes sense. He never had this much vomit. I will not buy Beneful again and will tell everyone I know! Now I have to research to find a healthy alternative.

My pug, Buster, is 11 years old. He has always been healthy. Because of a recent move and the inability to get his old food which had been produced regionally, I switched him to Beneful Healthy Weight. In just two short months, the change has been alarming. He went from being happy and energetic to lethargic, sleeping 95% of the time. He stopped seeking out affection, which he has always done. He had been right next to me for 11 years, to isolating himself onto his pillow. He started stumbling when he walked with his hind legs frequently giving way behind him, and he became unable to jump up onto our very low sofa. I attributed these things to age but worried about the rapidity in which they were happening. He has also been largely non-reactive and unable to meet my gaze most of the time.

I am a groomer. Whenever I have a dog-client with yeasty ears/eyes/paws and/or a dull thin coat and/or skin problems, I always ask the owner, "What do you feed your dog?" Nine times out of 10, the answer is Beneful. (The 10th time usually is Kibbles n Bits or Pedigree - both Purina products, I believe.) I tell the owners to please, please, please throw away the Beneful. Don't even donate it to rescues/shelters. I impress upon them the importance of buying new dog food on their way home and to feed not one more kibble of Beneful to their beloved pets.

We had our Lab on Beneful and he stopped eating, had diarrhea and vomiting and started losing weight. This was within just a couple of days after we had opened a new bag of Beneful and we took him to our vet on a Friday. And he started bleeding from the nose and mouth on Monday and we had to put him to sleep on July 29th, 2012. That day, the vet stated he would not make it through the day. This makes me so upset. This was a dog we had gotten for our grandson's 2nd birthday and he is now only 5. That was his best friend he no longer has.

My 7-year-old spayed Beagle was 45lbs (very fat!). I took action and started walking her more often. The weight wasn't coming off. I switched to the Beneful formula and have been feeding her this for two years. She's down to 36lbs, despite my lack of effort in portion control and exercise. If not for this food, I believe she would be heavier than 45lbs. She is still a little chubby which is to be expected in this breed (beagle) when sedentary. Her vet is happy with her weight and overall condition. Her companion which is a Rat Terrier also eats this food and is 8 years old and in good shape. If my dog had continued to be obese, she would have bad health, including pain. I am happy with this food and it delivered on the promise implied by its name.

We recently had a family pet experience the majority of the same issues listed in every post here. I would suggest to anyone looking for something that is worth it (and a lot of them are affordable) to go to Dog Food Advisor and search something 4 stars or higher. I happen to feed a 4-star food after pulling our dogs off a "higher" grade Purina food (same dirt fancy package). My dogs are happier, healthier and even poop less!

My 9-year-old Sheltie Chloe had to be euthanized on July 6th. On the 4th of July, she began vomiting bile and stopped eating. I brought her to the vet on the 6th because she was still lethargic and refused to eat. Her CPL showed acute pancreatitis and her CBC showed end stage renal failure! The vet said there could be an underlying cancer but her BUN, etc. were so elevated that there wasn't anything to be done but comfort measures. She developed chronic yeast infections in her ear three years ago that were thought to be environmental. Her food the last three years? Beneful and it's the same food my now 10-year-old male Sheltie had been eating until I put him back on Iams after Chloe died. Now, I am sick to think this food could have killed my Chloe and worry about my Eddie who ate it as well. I trusted Purina. Not again!

We have had our 2 dogs on Beneful for about 6 months. Athena, our Rott, started acting lethargic and just looked like she didn't feel good. Her coat was dull and she got 3 urinary tract infections during that period. She would intermittently vomit and she also developed a rash that had to be dealt with from Dr. Tom. Chance developed not only vomiting, but also uncontrollable itching and almost totally liquid stools with lots of mucous. It took 5 days of keeping him on a bland diet of chicken broth and rice. It's easy on their tummies and soaks up the extra fluid in their system, 4 days after trashing the Beneful and going back to Taste of the Wild, Salmon recipe. It's grain free, awesome dog food! Anyway, 4 days later, the dogs were starting to act like themselves again, no itching, getting sick or diarrhea!

My brother has a beagle mix and it had started to throw up, had diarrhea and was not able to jump up on the bed and had stopped being active like he normally was. He is only 3 yrs. old, so they took him to the vet and it turned out he was going through liver and kidney failure. We thought he was going to die or had to put him to sleep. $6500 later, the vet didn't know what was wrong with him but he started to get better and it just so happened that my brother fed him Beneful. They changed his food and now he is doing better, eating again and running around like the active dog he was. This is terrible, to sell this food and have all these dogs getting sick. There should be something done for the people who have had to lay out all this money just in case your food is poisoning dogs.

I have two Great Danes, one is a year old and the other is nine. Both of my dogs have been sick since April. The puppy Zke has had a rash, which was minimal at first but now is all over his body. I have spent almost $800.00 on vets, medicines, IV for hydration, shampoos, antibiotics, and anti-fungal meds. I can go on and on. My older dog was hospitalized for severe blood in a liquid stool for days. I almost lost her. She's dehydrated and needed IV, a sonogram of her abdomen, and bloodwork. I spent hundreds of dollars again. I made all the similar attempts to get her better.

I have five dogs, all different breeds. They are my babies! I have been feeding my dogs Beneful dog food for a very long time! I'm shocked that I have seen all of these complaints. My dogs have been off and on sick, vomiting and diarrhea. I just chocked it up to weather, etc. Now, my Pekingese has been very, very sick for the past few days. She has lost weight, vomiting, etc. I cannot believe that this is still on the shelf. I will never ever buy any of your products and God help me if I lose my baby, you will pay! This is horrible. I have saved most of my dogs from abuse, etc. now to find out that I'm the cause of my dogs being sick. Thanks to your product. Trust me, everyone will know! Thanks to everyone that posted comments. I hope that I can save my dog!

Annie is a Labrador-chow mixed breed, very strong in spirit and body despite being a three-legged amputee dog. She is an AKC CGC and a retired, certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, Inc. She is 15 years old, but she has been strong and doing great despite her advance age. Then we bought her a bag of Beneful and she got sick! Within a couple days of opening the bag and feeding it to her for breakfast and dinner, Annie was lethargic, weak, and shaky. She stopped eating, threw up bile and globs of mucous. She stopped eating, drinking, peeing, pooping. Her gums were pale and she was so weak she couldn't lift her head. We were making plans to have her put to sleep, certain that her kidneys or liver must have finally worn out and suddenly failed. Heartbroken doesn't begin to describe how we felt at this very sudden and shocking downturn in our beloved pet!

My Scnoodle had suffered the same effects (i.e., vomiting, runs, sleepy, shakes, etc.)! He just died. I had been frying him burger, chicken broth, etc. A friend at work today told me their dog was doing the same thing, and I asked what kind of food, and they said Beneful. I am more than angry! Something must be done. Get on your Facebook pages and warn people!

I have been feeding my two small dogs different dry foods for three years. I always bought the 15 pound bags. So, Beneful was not the only brand for any length of time. I also mixed a wet food into their morning meal so the amount of dry food was cut back. Dinner is always just dry. I do recall once last year that Shadow would not eat much for a couple of days then for the next couple, she would eat like a pig. Two weeks ago she vomited a couple of times, had diarrhea with bleeding and was lethargic. I took her off dog food and gave her rice and hamburger, and no- salt chicken broth and she seemed to recover until I put her back on the Beneful. Then, she got constipated and lethargic again so we went to the vet and she suggested getting another food.

After I bought this bag of Beneful, which I don't usually buy, both dogs started vomiting and sleeping all the time. Then I read this and now I know why! If my dogs die, you will not believe the fury I will unleash on you! I'm taking the rest of this bag to Wal-Mart and giving them all this info and loudly so everyone in the store hears me! Dog killers!

I had complained to the Purina company a couple weeks ago because my dog had been ill. Luckily, I had a post on my FB page about dogs becoming sick and some even having to be put to sleep. It seems the common denominator among the stories was the dogs had all been fed Beneful. So, I called Beneful and they gave the same generic answer they have given everyone who complained about their food. Then, I went and complained on their FB page, which led me to another spiel to try and placate me. I have been following this for the past two weeks and today, I received coupons in the mail. They gave me two coupons worth about $40. It's a hell of a lot more cost-effective to mail out some coupons than to stand up and admit, "Hey, there is a problem with our product. Maybe we should do the right thing and address the issue." I don't want any coupons for your food. I will be sending them back to you, Purina. I have found a new brand to try that has no animal products and is hypoallergenic and gluten free. It is expensive, but my baby is worth every dollar.

I bought a 31.1-lb bag of Purina Beneful Playful Life dog food, and now, both my dogs are throwing up within 30 minutes after they eat. I fed it to them twice, and both times, they reacted by throwing up. I have fed them this type of dry dog food for about a year now, and they like it very much. However, you might want to look into a recall of this product at this time. The bag says best used by July 2013. Thanks.

We switched to Beneful because it was economical and was readily available for purchase at Wal-Mart. We have three Siberian huskies. My oldest dog Nikita, which was 9 years old, became very lethargic, had difficulty in walking, had mild seizures, and eventually had shortness of breath. We took the dog to the vet four times, did every test, blood-work panels, and x-rays - we even took the dog for an ultra sound at a specialist. Even after the ultra sound, it could not show hepatocutaneous. The vet could not make a diagnosis based on all the test results. The vet believed her to have hepatocutaneous or pemphigus and recommend steroids, Pepcid, pain pills, and antibiotics. Now, we have bills totaling more than $1100. Over the course of the next three weeks, we watched the dog lose about 20 pounds in weight and the dog got to the point that she could not walk on her own.

My dog got very sick in June of this year. After numerous testings, blood work twice, x-rays and ultrasounds, we were unable to determine a cause for her illness. We were looking for hepatocutaneous syndrome, which is a liver disease. But the ultrasound didn't show signs of this disease but did show changes to the liver. We ended up treating her with steroids because they thought she had pemphigus, pain pills, and Pepcid to help with her appetite.

My little Chihuahua got sick after I bought this dog food and has passed away. Now I have another one that is having the same symptoms but since reading these complaints, I took him off Beneful. He is doing better but still has the hairball type cough every once in a while. I want them to take this ** off the market asap and reimburse us for our loss. They won't do it because they do not care. It's all about the money to this greedy company. I always had faith in Purina products but never again. I have written a complaint before on the Beneful ad, but I want to keep telling people about this terrible dog food (Beneful) that we have been giving to our babies. And yes, they are my babies. I take good care of them, and when someone wants to add stuff to their food to kill them off, they need to be punished.

I started feeding my dog Beneful about 8 months ago. She got very sick – lethargic, diarrhea, throwing up – and refused to eat and drink! I was very confused; she was fine before this. We ended up having to put her down, and I feel Beneful may have played a part in her death! I have heard and read so many complaints like this; I am not only upset, but am very angered! Reading the ingredients of this dog food and the official rating this dog food has been given, I feel it needs to be taken off the market immediately! Thank you for your time!

I have been feeding my dog Beneful Healthy Radiance, and he has gone from a very healthy, one-year-old dog to a lethargic, sick dog. The last 31-pound bag I purchased from Wal-Mart 2 weeks ago is when he really started getting sick and I noticed the symptoms more. He started to vomit after eating the food and now refuses to eat. Head shaking, itchy skin and ears, and diarrhea. Also, an hour after eating, he would start shaking his head and make choking noises. At first, I thought he was choking then realized he was having a seizure. My dog is sick today – very lethargic, vomiting, and whining a lot as if something is bothering him.

The first week of March, our little healthy seven-year-old Chihuahua started becoming ill: horrible diarrhea, vomiting, she was lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink. After a few days, she got worse and started having bloody diarrhea and wouldn't even get up to walk, eat, drink, play or go potty. Even if we called her name, she didn't even have the strength to lift her head. We immediately took her to the vet again and after tests, they said she had food poisoning and was dying. We had no other choice than to put her out of her misery that night. We felt horrible thinking that she had gotten into something.

Sick dog - I feed my American Bulldog Beneful and she began to throw up daily and severe upset stomach.

I purchased Beneful dog food from Wal-Mart/Sam’s. We only have one dog. She started feeling sick and having severe diarrhea and throwing up. She started to do better and then started eating the Beneful again. We didn't think anything about it might be the food. Then after a few days, she got really, really sick (throwing up bile) and really, really bad diarrhea. We took her to the Vet. She lost a lot of weight and has grown very lethargic and doesn't want to eat. She is not quite six years old, a small Jack Russell. I was shocked after reading everyone else's posts about the same exact symptoms.

In July my 11-year-old border collie started having diarrhea episodes in my house. They were bloody and two to three times a day in the house even though he was let outside often. At the end of August, my sister posted a link to this website as a warning to dog owners about Beneful. I couldn't believe it. This is what my dog was eating! I immediately stopped feeding him this and put him on a diet of rice and chicken stock for a few days. The diarrhea stopped a day later! He is now eating Iams food and is fine. It is time to pull this food off the shelf. While some dogs can tolerate this food, I wonder what might be happening on the inside. I am sad for my dog that he had to be so sick with a food I thought was good for him and a reasonable price for me. Purina, stop hurting our dogs! I'm so glad I found this site.

The first year there were no problems at all - she’s a happy and healthy baby peek-a-pom. Then we started her on Beneful and she started shaking her head and was choking. And for a year, the vet couldn't figure out why her ears and the choking were happening. Then the seizures started. We would sit and cry watching our baby shake. The vet was going to put her on anti-seizure meds. She stopped eating, thank god, so we thought maybe if we switched her food. We started giving her pieces out of our hand and she liked it and now the seizures have stopped. No more shaking her head violently and choking. She is getting better. I feel that if we had left her on Beneful, she would have starved herself or had a seizure that could’ve taken her out. I am mad - very mad. We trust dog feeders just as we trust our own food vendors. My baby Prissy is just as important. I hope they run out of business.

Our 6-year old Jack Russell, Casey, has been horribly sick for the last 5 to 6 weeks. We have fed her Beneful her whole life. About 5 weeks ago, she was a happy, healthy 6-year old. Today, she is at the vet for the 3rd time in 5 weeks. The vet told us that she did not think Casey would make it through the night last night. This started with her vomiting and her not being able to keep anything down. She stopped eating anything. She has gone from 18 lbs. to 13 lbs. in 5 weeks. The vet gave her antibiotics but that did nothing for her and the vet has X-Rayed her looking for tumors. Nothing. Her stomach is so distended that the vet said there could be a tumor but she was unable to see anything on the film. I bought the Beneful at Walmart and another friend of mine said he feeds his dog Beneful bought at Walmart and now his dog has stopped eating. My 10-year old son and 8-year old daughter are scared and heartbroken. Please get this poison off our store shelves, Purina.

I wish I had read these comments years ago! Last August our dog collapsed, went into convulsions, and died on the sidewalk while out on a walk. She was 10 years old, hadn't been feeling well and was bloated, but we thought it was partly due to the heat. She was a house dog and it was a cooler night on our walk. The vet said her death was due to organ failure. We since have a rescue dog that we have had since December and recently noticed that she has been itching a lot with a skin irritation. We thought maybe it was the soap our dog groomer was using and mentioned it to her. She did some research and found this site. We fed our previous dog Beneful for most of its life and currently had been feeding it to our puppy for 9 months. That bag of dog food is going in the trash. After reading these comments and our experience with this product, I am sure Purina is to blame for our pet's death and the current distress.

Our vet recommended this food due to our pit's allergies. The first month, he was great! The 2nd month, we have had bugs. We called our exterminator and he told us that the bugs were "clothes moths" that were coming from the dog food. He said that when the dog food is at the plant, the moths lay their larvae in the food and then it's packaged with the food and then the eggs hatch and basically swarm your house. Exterminator bill was $100. We took our dog back to the vet because he started having issues with his ears. After almost $150, we hope that the issues have been resolved. While speaking to the vet, he told us that he uses the same food and he is also having trouble with the moths. Just this week, we have noticed chunks of hair gone off our dog. This food needs to be removed off the shelves immediately.

My 2-year-old Akita mix was started on Beneful about 6 months ago. In the last 2 months, I noticed patches where her coat was bare; underneath skin rashes. Then about a month ago, she started scratching her right ear. I was going to take her to the vet when a neighbor noticed this also and said, “She has a food allergy.” What? I inquired on what healthy food I could feed her. My neighbor gave a name and my dog has been on it ever since, which is about three weeks. Also, I had to start giving her rice and beef, just to get her to eat more. Hopefully, she is on the road to recovery. I'm ashamed that Purina is backing their Beneful product. Why so many pet foods and lately they have to recall. Well, they should definitely recall Beneful. I’m contacting Purina to get refunds and asking them to pull the product. What happened to good old Gravy Train that was out there when I was a kid?

After eating Beneful for a few months, my dog started having violent seizures and also her bottom jaw quivers like it is paralyzed. She has been to the vet and nothing was found in her blood tests. My mom saw the post on Facebook about others that were warning of the use of Beneful, so I have removed the food from my house and replaced it with another kind. Please heed these warnings if you use this dog food. We all love our pets and my heart goes out to those who have lost theirs due to this problem. I am hoping our Bella will be okay now after all of it gets out of her system.

My boyfriend has a beautiful loving Boxer. About 2 months ago, he had 2 seizures. We thought nothing of it, just that he was getting old. A little bit after that, he started to throw up after eating his food. He now has horrible diarrhea, constantly panting and wheezing, dehydrated, and won't eat. He has lost between 20 to 30 lbs. He has become lethargic and his eyes are dull. Also, in the bag of food was tons of maggots and mouths, that is disgusting!

I was told by a friend just recently about Beneful. I have read these stories and our healthy 11 1/2 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Annie, died this past January. Our dogs have been on Beneful for the past year or so, and she just started having seizures for no reason – a couple here and there, then daily and multiple times a day. So after 5 days of this, we took her to the vet. He gave her a shot, did some blood work and sent us with some pills. She seemed fine then he called and said her kidneys weren't functioning at full capacity and her numbers were real high and to keep her on the meds and see how she does. That lasted about 4 days and the seizures came back; she was shutting down and disoriented, so we took her back again; more blood work and said her numbers were still bad. She dies 3 days later.

No notification from Beneful! Is this for real? We have used Beneful for about 8 years. First with our Jack Russell that did start the symptoms of diarrhea, pooping all the time and more! She became so ill that she had to be put down. We were heartbroken because she was our “child”! We have no children and she was our first dog ever! Then, when we got our second “child”, sweet Sassy, we continued with feeding her the Beneful. We had no idea that Sadie's death could be food related! We will be stopping Sassy's food tonight! Now, we have to figure out what she can eat that won't do her harm! This really upsets me!

We have noticed that our purebred Samoyed pups (1.5 years) were not eating their food and losing weight. They would pick around the Beneful. Our purebred black Lab (1 year) became very sick – vomiting and diarrhea, swollen face and eyes – as did our Sammies too. We took them to the vet. Cultures were done on all; everything came back ok except for a bad stomach (swollen) in all three dogs. We had many a day of pureeing food and syringing water down to keep them hydrated. We changed their food to homemade only. Three weeks later, all are doing well. We thought it was something they caught, so we put out the Beneful. Nope, they would not touch it.

Last week, I woke to find my lab mix had thrown up about 8 times before 7am, including the food and bile. My daughter called the vet and was given instructions what to watch for during the day. In the afternoon, she threw up white foam with blood. I called the vet and took her in to be checked. The vet said she had a bacterial infection, was dehydrated and had blood in her colon. We took her home with antibiotics and a hydration camel back. That night she was doing projectile diarrhea. She didn't drink or eat for two days and was lethargic, labored breathing.

In reading these reviews, I am horrified. We had an Aussie-Catahoula mix dog named Blue; he was the best dog ever. He’s an inside dog, never has any problems with him being inside. But one day, he had an accident (poop) in the house. We didn't think much about it and just thought maybe he got into something. He increasingly both pee and poop by accident, which was totally out of character for him. Then one Saturday, out of the blue, he became paralyzed in his back hind legs. We immediately took him to the vet and ultimately had to put him down that day. Blue was only 3 1/2 and in good health, and this was the most horrible thing we have ever had to do. We, like others, feed him Beneful thinking it was good for him. I am outraged. Something needs to be done. RIP Blue, we love you always.

I have 10 dogs and they have been eating Beneful for the past few months. This past week or 2, my dogs have had diarrhea with blood, vomiting that smells like bile and lack of appetite. I am so upset about this. Sick dogs from eating Beneful! I want retribution! Purina, own up to the fact that something is wrong with your dog food!

I have 2 Great Danes that were born and raised on Beneful. I had to bring them to the vet because my oldest one started vomiting, peeing and pooing everywhere. Apparently, it was because of the dog food he was on (Beneful). Poor thing. He's always had ear infections since he was a pup (he's now 4 years old) and since I switched on to Acana dog food, he no longer suffers with these problems. On the Beneful, they had severe ear and skin allergies. Hair was coming off by chunks and they had bald spots everywhere. They were starting to look like hairless Great Danes. I am never ever feeding any of my pets Beneful, ever again!

I have 3 generally healthy dogs, ages 11, 10 and 8. About 6 months ago, I started feeding them only Beneful. They had eaten the food elsewhere and seemed to really love it. For a couple of years, I mixed Beneful in with their regular food but then they would eat around the normal brand. Eventually I started a Beneful only diet.

My dog has eaten Beneful Healthy Weight for about two years now. For the past couple weeks, he hasn't been himself. He had diarrhea and has been vomiting. There were days he wouldn't even touch his food dish. He’s a big boy, so he eats with lots of gusto. Not so lately, not his Beneful. The vet told me to feed him rice with chicken or hamburger, yogurt, crackers, and other bland things. So far, he hasn't eaten Beneful for 2 days and he has no episodes being sick.

Beneful made my dog sick. The below Beneful complaints are true. My dog had all the issues associated with this dog food: skin and GI problems. We have since switched his food and the problems were alleviated. Please take this food off the market because the consequence of feeding this to a dog is serious health problems!

In the fall of 2011, I got a sample of Beneful Healthy Fiesta in the mail and gave each of my 5 dogs a small handful two nights in a row as a treat. Well 4 of them got very sick - diarrhea, vomiting, etc. They were sick for over a month and I spent about $650! I called Purina and made a complaint. One of the things the CSR told me was that there was avocado in that specific brand. I told her avocado was poisonous and she said that only the skin and pits were but that the flesh was very good for dogs. She then told me that they are "peeled very carefully". Yeah right... I'm sure humans aren't peeling them; and regardless, humans and machines make mistakes! Anyway, they did stand by their product and reimburse me for all my vet bills. I will never buy anything Purina again! The same goes for Hartz... my dog was hospitalized with a severe case of HGE after eating one of their chew bones. Hartz refused to reimburse me a thing and that bill was nearly $1,000.

I adopted a dog from the shelter. They fed her Beneful. So, I thought it must be good and cost-effective. Two of them are fine, but Reese my 70-lb boy has been throwing up both meals a day. I thought it must be the heat we're experiencing. He's not lethargic nor is there anything else that shows he's sick. No temperature - he just throws up his meal. I've always cooked the meat I include with their dry food, so I knew it wasn't the chicken or beef. I'm not feeding this to any animal ever again. Reese is still throwing up, but not as much. Maybe his system has to get back to normal? How can they keep feeding this with all these complaints and is it made in China? I'll check now. There's way too many complaints here. I'm telling friends and neighbors!

I have a very healthy, active purebred boxer who was 90 lbs. 10 months ago. In the beginning of the summer, he had two seizures about a month apart. We took him to the vet and he seemed fine. I’m writing this because he is now down to 50 lbs., vomiting all the time and has extreme diarrhea for the last month and a half. We have had him to the vets many times and dose after dose of many different meds, but he just is getting worse. He is suffering to the point that we faced the fact that we will have to put him down very soon. A friend who is a dog trainer sent me this link this morning and it seems I’m not alone. So many people with dogs with the same symptoms… and dog food (freshly bought) that has had moths and maggots in the bags that we threw out and bought new. Please do something to stop Purina from selling this toxic food and killing our family members! He goes to the vet today again and I'm showing the doctor this report and hopefully we can save him. We are at our wits’ end; and financially, it’s more than we can bear; but we have and will continue to do everything to save him. Please alert all and stop this travesty!

I have been feeding my dogs Purina Beneful for over a year now and one of my dogs was always throwing up and not wanting to eat her food. I just found out that Beneful has been responsible for some major health issues in many dogs and I realized that whenever my dog ate Beneful, she would get sick, throw up, be lethargic and just not herself. I have switched dog foods and she has not thrown up once all week long. She seems to be slowly returning to her old self. Why has Purina not pulled this dog food off the shelves? I can't believe that such a large corporation who claims to have the best interest of my dog at heart would keep this product on the market. Shame on you, Purina! I will never purchase any of your products again!

I thought I was doing our dog a favor by letting her pick out her own food as a treat when I picked her up from being groomed at our local PetSmart. Walking through the dog food aisles, she sniffed around and went nuts when she got to the Beneful bag. So I thought, "Okay. We'll give the small bag a shot and see how you like it." This was the worst mistake ever. This 6-pound Pomeranian was in perfect health. She's obedient, energetic, happy, and playful. Within 5 days of eating this food, she was needy, lethargic, and whiny. At the end of week 1, the diarrhea started, then the vomiting. By day 10, it was bile and blood in her stool.

I have 2 dogs, one has IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and needs to be on a special food. It was expensive to keep both dogs on it, but we did for a very long time (the dog with IBS would eat the other dog's food, that is why we kept both on the expensive special food). So, I looked for a food that I thought would be healthy for my dog that doesn't have IBS - I picked Beneful. She has been fighting ear infections (seems like she has a constant one) and skin infections (was told it could be ringworm, but it wasn't). I spent a lot of money on Lotrimin and the people at Walgreens probably think I have some serious issues with jock itch, and we still don't have an answer for the cause. She never had any of those issues when on the special food. I never even thought about it being the food. She is my dog that has no issues, so I thought! Many vet visits and lots of money have been spent (I love my dogs and do it again) but this makes me so angry. How can they get away with this? I'm throwing the food out today!

My little Dachshund out of the blue became very sick. She started with a little blood in her stool to it being nothing but blood and her throwing up. It went on for days. I called a vet asked him what I could do because I really did not have money to pay for a vet bill. He told me to put her on a 24 hour no food and little water diet; if that did not work, bring her in. She seemed to be getting better during those 24 hours but after just a few days of going back on her Beneful, she became sick again. I did not think she would make it to the vet, opened that I am, but she did and I took her in. They kept her for 4 days and she was all better when I picked her up.

My dog is overweight, so I bought Beneful thinking it would be better for him. Since he started eating Beneful the last month, he has been itchy and vomiting. He was around a puppy that had fleas, so I thought he caught fleas. I bathed him and applied flea and tick medicine. That didn’t help. Then he started the vomiting, so again I thought it was from the flea and tick shampoo and medicine. Again, I bathed him with a mild shampoo. Then, I read on Facebook about Beneful. I threw it out and gave my dog Kibbles ‘n Bits. He ate a whole bowl and is so happy running around now. He hasn’t been playing much the last week. He hasn’t been eating either. Thank you for this information.

I have been feeding my 2-year-old dog Beneful dog food for about a year now and about a month ago I noticed a change in her behavior. She has acted a lot more nervous around us and she has been shaking a lot more and more daily. If I would have known about this before, I would have never started feeding her this food. I just hope that it is not too late for her. I want this taken off the shelves immediately. Let’s save the rest of the dogs while we still can.

We had adopted a very healthy young Rottweiler from a nice lady who went to the same vet as us. We had been feeding our dogs a more natural lamb and rice food from PetSmart and decided to switch to something less expensive. My husband started purchasing Beneful for our dogs. After a short period of time, our Rottweiler began having grand mal seizures. This dog was otherwise in perfect health. We had no idea that the product could be related. Eventually, we switched them back to the more expensive brand to see if an allergy were possible. Our pug was also having skin issues as well. We wound up losing our dog Greta in June due to seizures. We spent many nights in the ER trying to calm her seizures and she had to be on medication which began to quit working. This is horrible. I am so shocked to hear that seizures were related to this product. I am angry that this could have been prevented!

I put my 8-year-old Jack Russell on Beneful healthy skin. In February, he would vomit in the mornings. I took him to the vet and they put him on antibiotics. In April, he started vomiting a lot. He ended up throwing up 18 times in 5 hours. I rushed him to the vet and they started an IV and put him on more antibiotics. They did blood-work and said his white blood cell was very high. They told me to try switching his food off Beneful and I did. He got 100% better; however, his white blood cell is still high. We are not sure if it will ever be back to normal, but he is now a pretty healthy dog. Please don't feed your dog this food.

I usually feed my dogs Purina One and Beneful together. I only had Beneful this time and my dogs became violently ill. Not your usual loose stool because of changing dog food. This was violent, consistent, almost every hour or more for three days of vomiting and diarrhea. The poor things. I was ready to take them to the vet but we got some Purina One and they were almost instantly better. Once the food was changed, they immediately got better. No more vomiting and their stools were firm again in a day. The distress the dogs were feeling stopped almost instantly. I will never buy Beneful again and I will tell others to do the same.

I have had problems with our Stitch vomiting foamy stuff. But has anyone else had any problems with their dogs coming up with cyst or tumors that bleed sometimes and paws swelling up and bleeding? I have to take him to the vet every so often, just to get antibiotics and steroids to take the swelling down. Doctor doesn’t know what’s causing it. He has eaten Beneful since he was a puppy, and he’s 9 years old. I never suspected it could be his food.

I had no idea there was a problem with Beneful. Maxie, our 12-year old Chow mix started to have seizures. The vet did tests and put her on meds. After a month, she had her last seizure and sadly passed away. I fed her Beneful for a couple years. This happened 2 years ago. Also 2 years ago, we rescued a 9 year old Manchester Terrier, fed her Beneful. She developed a horrible skin allergy that we are still fighting to get rid of. She is taking Benadryl and Prednisone. I will never buy Purina food for my dogs again.

I switched dog food to Beneful. My dog died of organ failure and/or poisoning! My 2 dogs that I fed other food lived very long lives. This one got sick at her stomach one morning. She had seizures & the vet recommended euthanasia. If I had unlimited financial resources, I never would have agreed. She was a house dog, only 9 yrs. old.

My son's dog, Butterball, is very sick from eating Beneful dog food. He has been eating it for about a month now and has developed diarrhea and losing weight. I didn't know why until I read all of the complaints. Now, it makes sense. I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow. I will keep everybody updated. Please recall this product before another animal gets sick.

I used to feed my 4 Chihuahuas Bil-Jac but was broke one month so I bought Beneful. They have been eating that for about 4 months now but I lost my little Harley a few weeks ago. I was wondering if it was because of changing their dog food. Now I see where Beneful is making dogs sick and some even dying. I feel that because of this stupid dog food that has all those things from China in it, is what did it and I am very angry and so hurt over losing my little Harley. They need to take this off the market. Our dogs are like our kids. The laws need to be stricter on them as they are children.

I am writing for my mom about Purina Beneful dog food. Her dog has recently been to the vet, one of several times over the last few years. She has always gotten either some type of skin problem or ongoing trouble with bowels and vomiting. They have done bloodwork and trials. I never have a diagnosis other than treating symptoms with medication like steroids. We all know steroids are bad for the organs. I recently encountered the complaints about the Beneful and just about fell over. She has been eating it for years! She has tried others but her dog likes it. What a shock to see that I can tell you from being involved that this dog is dying from eating that crap! It's unbelievable that it is still allowed to be produced with all the complaints. There has got to be someone who can do something. You all are supposed to be the start in this process, but from others posts it looks like nothing is being done. Please keep dogs from dying and fix this. I just had mom throw away her bag she has. Hopefully, we can save her dog. No thanks to anyone that should be keeping this from happening!

Beneful dog food - I always buy this product. I buy it by the large bag because I have 4 dogs. Well, the bag that I just bought; my dogs are sick, throwing up. When I checked the dog food, it’s soft and mushy. The kibbles should be crunchy. So now I have to go buy a new bag which is not cheap.

My 2 and 1/2 year old Labradoodle started eating Beneful Dry Dog Food this month, a change from his regular dog food. He threw up a couple of times but I did not associate it to the dog food. Yesterday, he threw up bile and went into a seizure. He was very healthy to this point. At the pet emergency hospital, they told me about Beneful's reputation. Once I looked it up online I was angry. This product should be recalled!

I just bought Kain, a lab/Belgian shepherd mix, and immediately put him on Beneful, since we feed our 3-year-old Maltipoo Beneful and he has had no problems. Two to three days after feeding Kain Beneful, he has been vomiting and having diarrhea. I thought he had gotten hold of something, and we stopped feeding him. He went right back to his playful self. I started Beneful again, and now, he is back to the same symptoms. I am just gonna stop the Beneful and try something new and organic. Thankfully, he hasn't been lethargic or exhibiting any major symptom. I hope just changing his diet will fix this. Beneful needs to be pulled off the shelf.

Is there something wrong with Beneful dog food? Many problems are listed here and I found more on other websites. If you suspect that Beneful has made your dog sick, please file a claim with Purina. You should also file a report with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Without this formal claim process, companies like this one may get away with hurting pets nationwide. It took almost a year to get the government and pet food companies to even agree that something was wrong with pet food that contained some ingredients from China. Finally, after 10,000 dogs died, it was disclosed that melamine was laced with other ingredients at a Chinese factory.

My 14 year old Westie, in excellent health, has been fed Beneful for approximately a year with a gradual increase in vomiting, especially in the morning. Three days ago, she became suddenly and acutely ill. Currently, she is hospitalized and underwent exploratory surgery to rule out cancer or a bowel obstruction. Surgery was negative. After reading all the similar stories about Purina dog food, I am going to talk to the vet about the possibility of her being negatively affected by the Beneful. We still don't know if we are going to lose our dog. I know this: Something has made my dog seriously ill and everything else has been ruled out. Beware!

I have had two Great Pyrenees until late last night. My husband Gerald and I bought Beneful Healthy Weight just 2-3 months ago. Pedigree changed their Healthy Weight's recipe and Lucy and Joe (their names) stopped eating pedigree. So, we switched to Beneful. They loved it. No problems until 4-5 weeks ago. Lucy, age 9 1/2, started developing lameness in the left hind quarter, and weakness. That seemed to pass and she did okay.

I bought Beneful for my miniature schnauzer and after only a week of eating this food, she became very ill. It started with diarrhea. She then stopped eating and drinking. I took her to the vet where I was informed her gums and tongue were very pale, she had temperature and diarrhea. She was given an antibiotic, something for her fever and IV fluids. We took her home and were informed to push fluids with a syringe if need be and call the vet in the morning. By morning, she had blood in her stools and was lethargic and could barely stand.

I have been feeding one of my dogs this product for at least a year. Two nights ago, I had little moths flying around my pantry where the food is kept. I opened the bag and it was loaded with creatures and worms, also disgusting. I have been feeding this to my dog! This company needs to be shut down. I still am trying to get rid of the flying creatures in my house. Molly has not gotten sick, but has not been herself. I wish I knew of the recall and all these people who have sick dogs and have lost some. I am so sorry.

My dog has been sick for days vomiting Healthy Weight Beneful that we recently purchased from Walmart. She also had a front leg injury and I did not know if the vomiting was related to the medicines. So the vet advised cutting back on the medications, but she still was vomiting the Beneful up. I went to the Internet to check out if there have been any recalls or complaints. I then saw a list of recent complaints of other dogs getting sick - and there was no recall. I will definitely call them on Monday to report this and insist on a recall based on the number of complaints listed in Consumer Affairs against them.

My dog Abbie (a mix, Pekingese/pug) started having seizures in December 2012, shortly after changing food to Beneful dog food. Our vet was unable to determine the cause of the seizures after doing blood work. He suggested I use medication to control her seizures. I refused phenobarbital because of possible side effects. However, we were encouraged to use diazepam (Valium) to help relax. I chose to only give it to her after she had a seizure, as it seems to make her dazed and not herself. Instructions were as needed.

I never used Beneful but grabbed a bag in Walmart since we were out of food. My one Siberian has been sick a few times throwing up. I didn't think much of it. My daughter's boyfriend brought over his 7-month old pup (pit boxer mix) and we fed her during the course of the day. She went home and got very sick throwing up and had diarrhea. Then, my other husky started getting diarrhea from it too. At this point, we figured it is the food. We tossed it out.

I had a two-year-old bull terrier who, last month, I had to put to sleep. I came home one night to a pool of urine and poop on the floor and dirty paw prints on the wall from my dog. His water bowl knocked all over the place, which I couldn't understand because he had never, I mean never, used the house as a bathroom or done anything like this before. I paid no mind to it like maybe he just couldn't hold his urine and had an accident. So I cleaned up the mess and let him outside. When I went to get him outside, he just looked at me like he didn't know who I was, so I just assumed he was scared because of what he did. So I had to grab his leash and pull him in the house. I put some water on his bowl and he walked right through the bowl like he didn't know what it was. I was still not thinking anything, but he's scared.

Beneful has made our boxer sick. Our boxer Rosie has stopped eating altogether. She is completely lethargic and will just stand there. She has thrown up and had diarrhea. You need to pull this off the shelf and make it right with those that have lost their dogs and had astronomical vet bills. This is unacceptable. We have also bought this from Walmart. We are taking her to the vet today. I will update again later.

I have been feeding my beagle/chihuahua mix Beneful Healthy Weight for years without any problems. A little over a week ago, he started vomiting after eating and then began refusing to eat when I set his food out for him (a major red flag because my guy never refuses a meal!). He recently sprained his front leg, so I thought at first his symptoms were because of the pain or a reaction to the meds the vet had prescribed, but it only got worse as his leg got better. After a week or so of his symptoms intensifying, it finally occurred to me it might be his food (it took so long for me to even think of this because like I said, I've been feeding him the same food for years with no issues). I switched him straight away to a diet of rice, eggs and green beans. In less than two days, his symptoms were gone and he was back to tearing into his dinner with gusto.

We have been feeding our dog the Beneful Healthy Weight for years. The store was out so I bought him the Healthy Radiance kind. After two days, he threw up all he had in his stomach, then bloody foam came up. He appeared to have some sort of seizure. He became unresponsive. I took him to the vet and he stayed overnight while they stabilized him. His liver enzymes were off the charts and his blood sugar was incredibly high. We are nearing the $1000 mark on vet bills. He still is somewhat lethargic and has eaten only one can of the prescription diet in 2-1/2 days. He had a more extensive blood test today to see if there is a reason for his liver numbers to be so high. He is on the prescription diet for three weeks to see if that helps at all.

I have 6 dogs, all rescues. All six began showing signs of something wrong after I purchased a bag of Beneful Healthy Weight from Sam's Club on June 15 in Indiana. They have no history of vomiting, diarrhea or distress. Three became very ill over this past week. One is in critical condition with Acute Pancreatitis. He stopped eating his normal amount of food over the last week and began throwing up bloody foam on June 29th, 2012. In fact, he experienced projectile vomiting during one very difficult episode. He was rushed to the animal hospital 8 hours after the first episode and has been on an IV for three days. It appears that he may recover some, but his liver is now swollen and a complete blood panel indicates that his liver experienced some kind of toxin. A few more hours and he may not have survived. The cost so far is in excess of $1,200.

I have two strays: a 14-yr-old female and a 1-yr-old Jack Russell /Westie mix male. They are both the light of my eyes. I have always fed Beneful to my girl, Ibis, and she loved it. Then Johnson came along and I started buying Beneful Puppy for him, too. He also liked it a lot. About a month and a half ago, I fed them both. Ibis seemed a little lethargic and lacking energy, but I didn't make too much of it, since she is a 14-yr-old gal; age can do that to you. But then I fed Johnson and two minutes after swallowing the last bite, he vomited as if he had swallowed a whole bag of food. I thought, since he is a puppy and a very hyper one, that it was because he wouldn't stop jumping up and down. So, I didn't feed him again, until next day in the afternoon. I purchased a bag of the Beneful Healthy Fiesta dog food at Wal-Mart because they were out of the usual Purina Lamb & Rice formula. Within 6 to 8 hours, my 10-year-old Lab began throwing up & having bloody diarrhea, also breathing hard and acting unsettled. I took her to the Vet and after several hundred dollars in bills, I still have a very sick dog. The next few hours will tell us if she will recover. If I'm forced to put her in the hospital for the weekend, my bills could be close to $1000 or more. This product needs to be removed from the shelves now, before it does more damage!

My sister's dog started to throw up and have just bloody stools. This was Sunday night. On Monday afternoon, her dog's symptoms worsened and the 7-month-old puppy was put down. The remainder on the dog food was given to my mother, who has 4 dogs. They did not assume it was the dog food (Purina Beneful). The dog was tested negative for Parvo. My mom gave the dog food to her 2 puppies (from the same litter as my sister's). On Tuesday, one dog was immediately sick; the other one, early this morning, has the same symptoms as the other dog.

Like the previous person, I have been feeding my cavalier Beneful for several months. Purina was one of the names my vet recommended. This last bag or two just seemed like it were contaminated. Lately, she has not been wanting to eat the dry dog food like she normally does. This past Sunday night, she threw up; and in the past few days, her feces has not been normal. She is not, however, lethargic; but her appetite is definitely not the same when I put out her dog food. I also give her Beneful soft food in the little containers and sometimes mix it with the dry. So, the containers might be contaminated as well. I decided to look online to see if there was a recall, and then, I noticed this website. So I am definitely not the only person who feels this way. They really do need to recall this product!

Beneful Healthy Fiesta - I also have fed my dogs Beneful for some time. However, the last bag I bought has done the same thing everyone else has described. My Dachshund just yesterday was acting lethargic, started vomiting and today was shooting crimson red, bloody diarrhea. I took off to the vet where he is on IVs and 2 different kinds of antibiotics. He's told me that it doesn't look good and that the next 24 hours are crucial. Now my toy poodle is starting to throw up. He has advised me to bring her in the morning so he can check her. What's worse is he said another client of his brought in her two dogs just last week with the same symptoms and both her dogs passed within 24 hours.

I have two dogs and have been feeding both of them Beneful dog food for quite a while. Yesterday, the younger dog (Abby) started having diarrhea. I thought maybe she had gotten into something bad, but I could not find or think of anything. This morning she still had diarrhea and was acting strange. I tried to feed her and our older dog (Sasha) and both of them refused to eat the Beneful dog food. I also thought that it smelled a little more potent than usual. Then, I found this site and realized other people have been having the exact same issue recently. Abby seems to be doing a bit better now; hopefully, she will have no further problems because of this. Now, I am going on Beneful’s site to make a complaint there! And I am going to warn my local grocery store!

Beneful Healthy Weight - Since then, she has quit eating for the first time in 6 years, has had severe diarrhea, vomiting and been lethargic. I took her to the vet on Monday morning, found elevated white blood cell count and high liver enzymes. She was on IV for 2 days and nights and given antibiotics. I had to clean all the mess in the house. How come this is not on the news to report these problems that kill other animals? They better stop selling those foods. Do something.

I bought a bag of dry dog food, Beneful Playful. I opened the bag and moths flew out of the bag and deposits were left in the food. It was all clumped up into the food. I went to take the dog food back, and because I didn't have the bill, I guess it was tossed out by mistake. The store would not take it back! The date on the bag was not expired. Please, I want to be compensated for this bad food! Thank you.

Just an update from my earlier post, my boxer just had to be put down today. His organs were shutting down and he was suffering. Now, my 8 month old puppy is experiencing the same symptoms. I'm so angry and sad. Please don't feed Beneful to your dogs.

My 7-year-old boxer has always been healthy and had a great appetite. I bought a bag of Beneful at Walmart about a week ago. Since then, he has quit eating for the first time in 7 years, has had severe diarrhea, vomiting and been lethargic. I took him to the vet last night, found elevated white blood cell count and high liver enzymes. He was on IV overnight and given antibiotics. He still won't eat and is not improving. I do not know if he will recover or die. Somebody really needs to take some responsibility for this. It is totally unacceptable that these many dogs have become sick and/or dying, all with the same symptoms. All after eating Beneful.

Why is it still on the shelves? My dog will be a year old in a few weeks. We recently took him with us on a 5-hour trip and I bought a brand new bag of Beneful before we left last week. I put the food down for him when we got there and usually the food is gone within seconds of it hitting the ground, but he took a couple of bites and turned his nose up. I figured the long trip had gotten to him and thought nothing of it. He's been having diarrhea since he finished the first bowl, and again, I just thought maybe it was the trip. Now, we're back home and it's still going on, except now he's lounging around, curled up in a ball. The poor guy looks like he is in so much pain. He has been eating Beneful for the past few weeks with no problems. We tend to stock up on it because he is a big dog. We go through a lot of food, but it seems this batch is tainted and needs to be recalled. And now that I found this, I'm beginning to wonder how many dogs are going to have to get seriously ill before they pull the ** off the shelves. Clearly, there is a problem.

Terrible. My dog began eating Beneful Incredibites and got sick with bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargic and dehydrated. I took him to the vet and thank God it wasn't too late. $550 later, my dog is alive for now. They should shut this Purina operation down.

I bought a bag of dry Beneful Playful for my dog 3 days ago. I opened the bag and moths flew out of the bag and laid some kind of deposits in the food. It was dried in clumps in the food. I was mad because I didn’t have the bill and the store would not take it back without a bill. I paid $7.00 for the food and I had to throw it out.

So, I got the dog food and my dog ate it for a few days and pooped her bed and peed and we thought she was about to die. She oozed stuff out of her skin (it smelt bad) and we stopped feeding her, and now she's perfect. That's all but really, it's on the market. Wow!

I just want to say that my beagle had the exact same symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea that became bloody after a few days. We have been using Beneful since we got her 3 years ago. As soon as we switched to another brand, she quickly recovered. We are in day one of her recovery, so time will tell. But she is starting to act like she used to: happy, energetic, hungry, etc.

We changed our dog to Beneful, and she is now sick and has the same symptoms as everyone else has listed - panting, diarrhea, and vomiting. I am so furious, and I assure you I will do everything possible to take action against this company. My dog may come home today; that is a maybe, not a yes. She is better; however, we don't know yet. Her weekend stay in emergency care is more than $800, and that doesn't include vet bills we have yet to see. How can a company with this many complaints keep this on the shelf? I don't get it. And what does it take to get it pulled? Help, please.

I'm angry after reading these reports now. I noticed my dog Bloodhound is not wanting to eat her food. I felt there had to be something wrong with the dog food. I dismissed the idea thinking surely, it's not her food. One day, she was terribly in extreme pain. She could not sit or lay. I took her to the vet because I thought she must have eaten something bad, like she was poisoned. They found nothing. At that time, she seemed to recover after not eating. I still fed her but began to mix half a can of dog food with dry shed. She ate this way. As time went on, she lost all energy and she just wanted to sleep. Four days ago, she was suffering horribly, breathing heavy and following me room to room. I took her to the vet, she asked me what did she eat. Her belly was sensitive, her intestine looked good and not twisted, however, we would have to do exploratory stomach surgery. Baggy was suffering so bad I had her killed. I wish I had done research sooner. Who would have thought? I miss her terribly.

My yellow lab, 6 years old, have been eating Purina One all his life. Recently, he has been scooting so I thought to change his food. A few days ago, I bought Beneful from Walmart and gave it to him. Two days later, he had diarrhea. Pretty bad too. When I took him for a walk, he defecated two to three times. This day when I walked him, he defecated at last 8 times. Each time he went, he scooted on the grass. He usually scoots in the house once or twice a day, but this day, he scooted each time he went. I thought that it was because I changed his food and didn't mix it, but now I think its because of the poor quality of the food. Also, I spoke to my vet and she said that it was a downgrade to Purina One. I'm going to go with what the vet recommended, Blue Buffalo. I'm sure it'll be super expensive, but I'd rather pay a whole lot instead of having my dog die.

Brand new bag of Beneful Healthy Fiesta dry dog food (20101084 2123L11) was purchased on 4/15/12. 3 hours later after the first bowl, I’m up all night with my Yorkie/Shih Tzu vomiting it all up. Next morning, he ate nothing else. He is 7 years old and in perfect health. A day went by, he did not eat and he got back to normal - perky and doing well. He ate a little of it in his bowl and 3 hours later, he’s vomiting all night (9 times) and was in a lot of pain. So I took it away and he did not eat for another day and got fine again. He’s now doing ok, but I will never ever buy another Purina product. He’s on Science Diet Ideal Balance now.

I am reluctant to assign blame on scant evidence, however, after reading the posts on the adverse effects of Beneful dog food on this site, I believe my dog has had a similar adverse experience from eating Beneful dog food. Specifically, after changing to Beneful, my four year old lab became lethargic after several days, then began vomiting and subsequently developed acute bloody diarrhea. It was so bad that I thought initially she may have punctured an intestine from ingesting a sharp object that she'd chewed. After extensive testing and x-rays by the vet, it was determined that there was no bowel or intestinal perforation, rather some irritant that was the cause.

My dogs have eaten the wet variety of Beneful for some time with no problems. We purchased a new variety last week, Beneful Hearty Roasters. My 17-year old snoodle ate the food Thursday night and began vomiting and by morning had bloody diarrhea. We took him to the vet on Friday morning where he was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis. He was in extreme pain and did not survive. Although 17 years old, we had recently been told by our vet that he was in very good physical condition. Our vet said Schnauzers have a history with pancreatitis so we did not make the connection with Beneful dog food until Sunday night.

I have two basset hounds and one Pomeranian. I purchased a bag of Beneful Original around the middle of March. I noticed when I fed my dogs they wouldn’t eat all of the food I put out. This is very unusual: basset hounds eat anything. One basset became very ill after eating this food for a couple of days along with the Pomeranian. The other basset was not as sick. After a few days, the sickest basset began to have organ failure and I had to have him put down. The other is now very sick, won’t eat or drink water. The Pomeranian is better, but not well. They were fine until this bag of Beneful (lot # 20391087 18581 04). I have spent a couple of thousand dollars on vet bills in the past month, losing one basset and now I may lose another one. I contacted Purina, sent a sample of dog food and there was no response. I had to call and was told that after being tested, the food met all specifications. I will be sending samples to two separate testing labs to see what they find.

My dog fell very ill in what seemed to be a very short amount of time. I have "M" for over 14 years and while she was old, she really was in perfect health. She was happy and active, I would consider her to be a poster dog for senior health!

I opened a new bag of Beneful. Three days later, my Yorkie is in the vet hospital with pancreatitis. I'm waiting for the word from the doctor what the outcome will be .

I had two dogs, a fat Cocker and a tiny Maltese mix. My Cocker had melanoma last year and the vet said that it had most likely spread. Not having the money to spend on cancer treatments, we decided to take a 'wait and see' approach. Last month, I bought Beneful Healthy Weight dog food at the grocery store as we were running low on food and they didn't carry what I usually feed. I started feeding them the food and my Cocker got sick, throwing up, bloody diarrhea, coughing and generally strange seizure-like episodes. I took him to the vet and he asked if he had gotten into any trash or anything, which he hadn't. His condition worsened and after a couple of weeks, we had to put him down because he was suffering.

Excuse my language, however this ** is the worst! My new puppy died from eating this! I know 2 people who have had heart and liver failure and passed away! Excuse my unprofessional language, however, it’s extremely unprofessional to false advertise something and not do the research needed for safety. Why the hell is this ** even in stores?! Any food bought in a grocery store is no good at all for animal food. Petco, or specific pet stores are highly recommended.

My 2-year old dog has been eating Beneful since we adopted her when she was 4 months old. About a month ago, I bought the Fiesta mix variety. She ate it happily but developed severe vomiting and abdominal pain. I had to rush her to the pet emergency at 3 am. She was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis and had to remain at the hospital for IV treatment. She even had to have a blood platelet transfusion because her white cell count was so high. After coming home from the hospital, she had no appetite at all for a long time. She still remains on prescription dog food because I am afraid to feed her any other kind of food. My vet bill so far was nearly $3000! Unfortunately, I do not have the bag or lot code of the Beneful because I poured it into a plastic canister when I brought it home from the store. I still do have some of the food though and will keep it, I guess, in case it is needed for testing.

I have four doxies, and while on a trip, we ran out of our normal dog food. We purchased some Beneful, which they seemed to like well enough and some of them more than the others. So when we returned home, I bought more and mixed it again with their regular feed. I fed them this morning, and I was about to take them outside when one of my dogs went into a grand mal seizure with loss of bowel control. Once she came out of that, she was still shaken but went outside normally. I took her with me while I dressed for work, and almost immediately again, she began having a "small" seizure and then vomited undigested food.

My dog has been eating this product for awhile now. However, last week, she became very ill and was throwing up and had diarrhea. We thought she got into the garbage or ate something on one of her walks. The diarrhea did not stop and in fact got worse and was very bloody. We took her in the Emergency Vets Office because I was so worried. They could not figure out what was wrong with her. They gave her antibiotics and told us to only feed her boiled hamburger or chicken. Within a day she was acting normal and happy. The vet followed up and told us to start feeding her the regular food. In about two days the issues started up again. Looking it up online and reading the fellow complaints I'm glad I figured out it was from her dog food. It seems highly unlikely that all these people's dogs have had the same issues without the company doing anything.

I run a small breed rescue. I keep three different kinds of food down for the dogs to choose from. The only two (A Papillon and a Toy Poodle) that chose Beneful Healthy Weight became extremely sick nearly a week ago, with almost constant watery diarrhea and occasional vomiting. Beneful made 2 of my dogs extremely ill. They both became dehydrated and their watery stools started having streaks of blood in them. They had little to no energy and I was syringing Pedialyte down them round the clock.

I had been feeding my greyhound with Beneful for 2 months because she can be a picky eater and would heartily eat the Beneful. Then she started throwing up and having basically liquid diarrhea with blood in it. I took her to 2 vets who both told me she must have gotten into garbage or something and diagnosed her with pancreatitis and gave her some antibiotics.

I tried two different bags of original Beneful food. Dogs have been eating it over a year now. Within 3 minutes of eating, they both have been throwing up the undigested food. I took the rest of the food back to where I got it and I'm trying a breed quality food from now on. The dogs have also had diarrhea but I was sure that the vomiting was fem the food. After getting a better food, which I fed about thirty minutes ago, neither one has thrown it back up. I have been home the last two days and the only time they have vomited was immediately after eating this food.

Our dogs have been eating Beneful for some time. They both have cancer. I think it is too much of a probability that I have two dogs with cancer, plus in the 25lb dog bag, the added treats were Waggin' Train, a product of China. I refuse to feed my dogs products that are made in China.

I bought Beneful at Wal-Mart thinking it was a decent food at 25% protein. My 13-year old pointer, who has always been healthy, started throwing up undigested food within the first day or two of starting it. After 2 nights of this, I decreased the amount I was feeding him, thinking maybe he was just eating too much prior to bedtime. The next day, he hurled mucous and/or vomited 7 or 8 times. 24 hours since his last Beneful, he is now holding down a small amount of homemade chicken and rice. I am so glad I read these reviews and others before trying to feed him more Beneful. I am hoping my dog is over the hump and on the mend. I am really angry that nothing has been published by Nestle Purina PetCare (the makers of Beneful) about this potential problem. It's obviously affecting many dogs!

My daughter's 8 year old dog has been throwing up since last night, multiple times. For the last couple of weeks, he's been ridiculously thirsty, and then constantly needing to go out, without the diarrhea at this point, ever since I bought the last bag of Beneful, Playful Life. We've been getting a Beneful product pretty regularly over the past year. I'd been buying the Playful Life recently, and he did really well on it. His coat became shiny, and the dandruff greatly decreased.

I have no doubt Beneful made my dog very, very sick. After several days of vomiting and diarrhea, I switched him to a boiled chicken and rice diet. When he got better, I reintroduced Beneful and he immediately got sick again. He rapidly became dehydrated had elevated liver enzymes and irregular heartbeat. The vet even suggested we consider euthanasia. It's been six days since he had any Beneful and he is slowly getting better. He no longer has vomiting and diarrhea but probably has some liver damage and I have a $700 vet bill. Someone needs to look into this.

My 10 year old dachshund has never been sick before. We had been feeding him the cheap Publix brand dog food for years without any problems. A couple of weeks ago, we made a grocery run to B.J.'s Wholesale store. We had a coupon for Beneful Dog Food and decided to get it. After the first day of feeding our dog with this food, he began vomiting horribly. After 24 hours of no food, he slowly began acting like his old self. Two days went by and we fed him only bland things such as rice and chicken. He was definitely feeling better. The next day, my daughter tried giving him some of the dog food again. He died that night! I am so upset by this! This company should be stopped from selling this so called "food".

Both of my dogs have died in the last two weeks due to Beneful dog food; diarrhea, vomiting, shortness of breath. There’s nothing new in their environment except new bag of Beneful! My kid and the whole family is brokenhearted.

I just recently started feeding my Pomeranian with Healthy Fiesta beginning of this month (February 2012) and she died of kidney and liver failure. She has been vomiting and having diarrhea but we thought maybe she ate some human food because she hasn't really been eating her food. We tried giving her Pedilyte since she has been vomiting but she was getting worse, so I googled Healthy Fiesta recall and this came up. I'm extremely upset!

I just opened a new bag of Healthy Fiesta and now one of my dogs is at the vet hospital, lethargic, has diarrhea and is vomiting. Another of my dogs is starting to vomit. The only thing new is the new bag of dog food. Consequence is a $1000.00 vet bill so far and will increase if my others dogs continue to get sick. I have since stopped feeding that food.

Our English Springer Spaniel has a very healthy appetite and has eaten several name brands of dog food including Purina throughout his 12 years. When it was time to buy a new bag, I spent more than half an hour in the dog food section reading through the ingredients & the benefits of each of the dog foods before settling on the 21 lb bag of Purina's Beneful Healthy Fiesta with wholesome rice and real chicken. Since he had eaten Purina brand before, I did not anticipate any problems.

Both of my dogs have been on Beneful the last couple of years but the last bag I purchased I have noticed that they are vomiting, have diarrhea, lethargic and will not eat their food (my GSD is food crazy so this was real cause for concern). However, when I try them on treats, chicken and rice, they are starving and eat that. When I try them on the food again, they are not interested and will rather go hungry which directly points to the Beneful food. I have searched for any recall information and found nothing even though it is clear from many sites and posts that this month many dogs have been getting sick from the same food I am having problems with.

After using Beneful, my pit bull was super sick. She had gas, upset stomach, runny poops, and did nothing but sleep for 3 days. So I called Beneful to comment.and was told I was at fault, that their products do no harm. Also my vet was wrong. These call reps. are more qualified than vets, right. Well, because of the problems with the food, I was thinking of using Kibbles and Bits. But after the customer service, I know I will never use Beneful.

I have had my female Jack Russell (Kitty) on Beneful for a couple of years with no adverse reaction. I thought that I had stumbled upon a healthy inexpensive food for her. She has easily gone back and forth between Beneful's Healthy Weight, Regular and Growing Puppy. She has all her shots and updated health tests and has never had any health issues. Nor have I made any changes to her treats or given her any table scraps. Recently, I saw the ads for Beneful Fiesta and thought I would give her a new taste experience. She grazes at her food, little bits at a time. After a week or so of eating, this food she developed symptoms of vomiting and continuous diarrhea. She, as I said, has had no other changes to her routine. I can not believe how many other dog owners are experiencing such similar issues. I will never purchase nor recommend Purina products again.

I saw the commercials for the product and was immediately appalled that they contain avocado, which is a known toxin for dogs. Why would your company knowingly put something poisonous into dog food? This makes no sense. This is unconscionable, inexcusable, and tantamount to attempted murder. Stop this nonsense!

My 8 year old dog has been on Beneful for many years. We just bought a bag of food from Petco about 4 weeks ago. My dog started to have a very poor appetite, lethargic, significant abdominal discomfort and bloody mucous stools. She is also very thirsty. She clearly has colitis. (I am a physician). I had thought that she got colitis (bowel infection) from a dehydrated chicken treat I had given her about four weeks ago but her symptoms continue to reoccur. She will sniff her food but is very reluctant to eat it. Half the time she won't eat it. Interestingly, she will be hungry for other food items that are safe for dogs such as chicken and rice. I had taken her off the food for a few days and she got better. Symptoms returned when I restarted it.

We have 3 adult dogs and 8 puppies who we have had Beneful Original and Puppy food. We buy 60 lbs at a time. Last night, we bought food from Petco, fed all the dogs just before bed. This morning, we had 6 vomiting puppies with diarrhea and another pup just lifeless. We rushed them to the vet thinking it was Parvo since it's an airborne disease, but they tested negative for Parvo, negative for worms, and no fever. The common denominator was the Beneful Puppy food! The vet was surprised because he said that Beneful was good food for them.

I had a German Shepherd for 5-6 years. I started feeding her Beneful dry dog food and the wet ones that come in the dish (looks like "people" food). She was sick a few times that would last a week or so then seem fine, I thought she had just gotten into something outside at the time. In late 2006, she became very, very ill. She was lethargic, wouldn't eat, could barely lift her head to drink water, throwing up, diarrhea, etc. She then could barely stand up, never mind walk. We took her to the vet who gave her some pills and special food, I couldn't afford the $1500 for extra tests and they said if she didn't seem better in 24 hours to bring her back. She was worse the next day and had to be put down. After reading all of these articles about the food, the symptoms all seem the same and I am wondering if this is what caused my beloved dog to have to die.

I had been using Beneful for a while but recently bought a bag and I have 6 dogs that have been eating this. They started vomiting and having diarrhea with blood. I thought this was a stomach flu going around. Well, they stopped eating this. However, one started getting so sick that we had her on IVs for 2 days. Before we could get her on it for the third day and the vets could not figure out the issue, she passed away. I have been going crazy trying to figure out what is happening and thought I would check out the food on the website and found this. It is really strange that there are so many with the same problem and same food brand. I bought a different brand last night thinking this might be the problem and they have been eating like they haven't eaten in weeks. I also wanted to make a note on how thirsty they have been. I am so relieved to have read other peoples complaints regarding Beneful Dry Dog Food. I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong with our beloved, healthy six-year old pug, Keesha. We have never bought her Beneful Dry Dog Food until a few days ago. The next morning, I awoken to throw up at the end of my bed. I know dogs can have an upset stomach once in awhile so I didn't think much of it. Sure enough the next night, Keesha threw up at the end of bed again. Still I wasn't too worried because she was her normal self during the day.

I switched my yorkies to Beneful about two and a half months ago. One started losing weight, vomiting, and had many days with diarrhea. She also started to drink large amounts of water, and was having many accidents. She would be walking to get to the door to get outside, and suddenly just urinate on the floor, right in front of us standing to hold the door open for her. She never had problems like this in the past. Finally, two weeks ago, we had to have her put to sleep. She was 8 lbs, and at her death, a little over 4 lbs.

We purchased a bag of Beneful healthy weight dry dog food from dollar general. When I opened the bag to scoop some out, several bugs ran out of the sealed bag. They turned to be roaches. Well, those several bugs turned into several more bugs. We have attempted to get rid of them ourselves with foggers, bait, sticky traps, etc with no luck.

Benefit Healthy Fiesta contains avocado which is toxic to dogs! My yellow lab had seizures, diarrhea, vomiting, excessive thirst and panting after eating this twice today. We put two and two together and realized it was this new food! We usually get Healthy Weight but got Fiesta by mistake! Do not feed this to your dogs!
