I'm angry after reading these reports now. I noticed my dog Bloodhound is not wanting to eat her food. I felt there had to be something wrong with the dog food. I dismissed the idea thinking surely, it's not her food. One day, she was terribly in extreme pain. She could not sit or lay. I took her to the vet because I thought she must have eaten something bad, like she was poisoned. They found nothing. At that time, she seemed to recover after not eating. I still fed her but began to mix half a can of dog food with dry shed. She ate this way. As time went on, she lost all energy and she just wanted to sleep. Four days ago, she was suffering horribly, breathing heavy and following me room to room. I took her to the vet, she asked me what did she eat. Her belly was sensitive, her intestine looked good and not twisted, however, we would have to do exploratory stomach surgery. Baggy was suffering so bad I had her killed. I wish I had done research sooner. Who would have thought? I miss her terribly.

My yellow lab, 6 years old, have been eating Purina One all his life. Recently, he has been scooting so I thought to change his food. A few days ago, I bought Beneful from Walmart and gave it to him. Two days later, he had diarrhea. Pretty bad too. When I took him for a walk, he defecated two to three times. This day when I walked him, he defecated at last 8 times. Each time he went, he scooted on the grass. He usually scoots in the house once or twice a day, but this day, he scooted each time he went. I thought that it was because I changed his food and didn't mix it, but now I think its because of the poor quality of the food. Also, I spoke to my vet and she said that it was a downgrade to Purina One. I'm going to go with what the vet recommended, Blue Buffalo. I'm sure it'll be super expensive, but I'd rather pay a whole lot instead of having my dog die.

Brand new bag of Beneful Healthy Fiesta dry dog food (20101084 2123L11) was purchased on 4/15/12. 3 hours later after the first bowl, I’m up all night with my Yorkie/Shih Tzu vomiting it all up. Next morning, he ate nothing else. He is 7 years old and in perfect health. A day went by, he did not eat and he got back to normal - perky and doing well. He ate a little of it in his bowl and 3 hours later, he’s vomiting all night (9 times) and was in a lot of pain. So I took it away and he did not eat for another day and got fine again. He’s now doing ok, but I will never ever buy another Purina product. He’s on Science Diet Ideal Balance now.

I am reluctant to assign blame on scant evidence, however, after reading the posts on the adverse effects of Beneful dog food on this site, I believe my dog has had a similar adverse experience from eating Beneful dog food. Specifically, after changing to Beneful, my four year old lab became lethargic after several days, then began vomiting and subsequently developed acute bloody diarrhea. It was so bad that I thought initially she may have punctured an intestine from ingesting a sharp object that she'd chewed. After extensive testing and x-rays by the vet, it was determined that there was no bowel or intestinal perforation, rather some irritant that was the cause.

The only known change in her habits was the Beneful food and the symptoms are so identical to those documented in other posts that I think it goes beyond mere coincidence and is rather likely the cause. This was a costly experience, almost $800 in vet charges plus the effort to clean up bloody diarrhea from several rooms in the house. Fortunately, she is now on medications and prescription food and seems to be recovering from the incident.

My dogs have eaten the wet variety of Beneful for some time with no problems. We purchased a new variety last week, Beneful Hearty Roasters. My 17-year old snoodle ate the food Thursday night and began vomiting and by morning had bloody diarrhea. We took him to the vet on Friday morning where he was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis. He was in extreme pain and did not survive. Although 17 years old, we had recently been told by our vet that he was in very good physical condition. Our vet said Schnauzers have a history with pancreatitis so we did not make the connection with Beneful dog food until Sunday night.

Our 11-year old Rat Terrier ate the Hearty Roasters food and began vomiting at 3:30 in the morning. By 9:00 a.m., she was having bloody diarrhea. We took her to the vet where we got antibiotics and nausea medicine. She is still recovering. After reading the postings on this web site, it is obvious Beneful dog food is killing dogs all over America. I hope the Purina Dog Food company acknowledges the obvious problems with Beneful dog food products. I will never purchase nor recommend any Purina pet product again.

I have two basset hounds and one Pomeranian. I purchased a bag of Beneful Original around the middle of March. I noticed when I fed my dogs they wouldn’t eat all of the food I put out. This is very unusual: basset hounds eat anything. One basset became very ill after eating this food for a couple of days along with the Pomeranian. The other basset was not as sick. After a few days, the sickest basset began to have organ failure and I had to have him put down. The other is now very sick, won’t eat or drink water. The Pomeranian is better, but not well. They were fine until this bag of Beneful (lot # 20391087 18581 04). I have spent a couple of thousand dollars on vet bills in the past month, losing one basset and now I may lose another one. I contacted Purina, sent a sample of dog food and there was no response. I had to call and was told that after being tested, the food met all specifications. I will be sending samples to two separate testing labs to see what they find.

My dog fell very ill in what seemed to be a very short amount of time. I have "M" for over 14 years and while she was old, she really was in perfect health. She was happy and active, I would consider her to be a poster dog for senior health!

One day, I noticed that it would take her longer and longer to eat her meals, but she was still eating them. She also had started vomiting in the mornings at some point before I would wake up and eventually had stopped eating all together. I took her to the vet who said to give her some pepcid and that should solve the vomiting, which in turn would help the eating. I never got around trying the pepcid because that day, she started having horrible diarrhea which rapidly progressed into bloody diarrhea. At this point, she stopped eating all together and was showing great signs of fatigue. Mind you, she always kept drinking water and was never dehydrated.

We soon went back to the vet. At this point, poor "M" was unable to lift herself off the ground. The vet said that she could be showing possible signs of poisoning and asked if she had gotten into the trash or anything in the yard? The answer was "no". We live in an apartment and she was supervised on a leash at all times outdoors and never got into the trash. Then she suggested it was dog flu and she should pull through. We had tests done and was sent home with meds that would help with the bloody diarrhea and that she should be put on a diet of chicken and rice.

I racked my brain trying to figure out what possibly she could have gotten into and the only thing that I could come up with was the new bag of Beneful that I had bought from Costco. I have fed her Beneful for years and years and have never had a problem. "M" was grateful for the chicken and rice and seemed to gain a bit more strength and I became hopeful, but that was short lived. The tests came back normal, in fact better than normal for a dog of her age, yet the vet dismissed everything to old age. I asked about the possibility of the food making her sick and she acted like I was crazy and that if there was something wrong with a major brand like Purina, she would know about it. "M's" health quickly declined. She no longer walks and could not control her bowels and would have horrible black and blood filled projectile diarrhea in the house. To shorten the already long story, "M" had to be put down.

I Google searched Purina recalls and found several sites with similar stories to mine. While my best friend was old, I still cannot fully believe that the food didn't have something to do with her demise. She started having problems within a few days or so of feeding her from that new bag. I ran the food idea by another vet and she said that unfortunately before pet products are recalled, a lot of pets have already fallen victim. Again, I cannot say for sure if the Beneful had anything to do with it but in my heart I feel that if I never would have fed it to her, she would still be here. The Lot numbers on the bag are 20241086 0502L09, exp. January 2013.

My heart goes out to everyone on this page. I am sorry for your losses and can only hope that all of our beloveds are playing together at the great dog park in the sky!

I had two dogs, a fat Cocker and a tiny Maltese mix. My Cocker had melanoma last year and the vet said that it had most likely spread. Not having the money to spend on cancer treatments, we decided to take a 'wait and see' approach. Last month, I bought Beneful Healthy Weight dog food at the grocery store as we were running low on food and they didn't carry what I usually feed. I started feeding them the food and my Cocker got sick, throwing up, bloody diarrhea, coughing and generally strange seizure-like episodes. I took him to the vet and he asked if he had gotten into any trash or anything, which he hadn't. His condition worsened and after a couple of weeks, we had to put him down because he was suffering.

Now a week later, my Maltese is suffering a lot of the same symptoms: coughing, diarrhea and loss of bladder control. I stopped feeding her the Beneful yesterday and put her on Blue Buffalo. Hopefully that will remedy the situation. I am just distraught that I had my poor dog put to sleep (hardest thing to do ever) and it was probably just from that crappy, cheap food. Don't feed your pets cheap food! Go to a pet store and have someone help you pick out something suitable for your dog.

My 2-year old dog has been eating Beneful since we adopted her when she was 4 months old. About a month ago, I bought the Fiesta mix variety. She ate it happily but developed severe vomiting and abdominal pain. I had to rush her to the pet emergency at 3 am. She was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis and had to remain at the hospital for IV treatment. She even had to have a blood platelet transfusion because her white cell count was so high. After coming home from the hospital, she had no appetite at all for a long time. She still remains on prescription dog food because I am afraid to feed her any other kind of food. My vet bill so far was nearly $3000! Unfortunately, I do not have the bag or lot code of the Beneful because I poured it into a plastic canister when I brought it home from the store. I still do have some of the food though and will keep it, I guess, in case it is needed for testing.

I have four doxies, and while on a trip, we ran out of our normal dog food. We purchased some Beneful, which they seemed to like well enough and some of them more than the others. So when we returned home, I bought more and mixed it again with their regular feed. I fed them this morning, and I was about to take them outside when one of my dogs went into a grand mal seizure with loss of bowel control. Once she came out of that, she was still shaken but went outside normally. I took her with me while I dressed for work, and almost immediately again, she began having a "small" seizure and then vomited undigested food.

I know that doxies are prone to seizures. But the only other time that I've had one happen? When I gave our previous dog Beneful as a supplemental feeding! I didn't put 2 and 2 together until just now. But you better believe that I'm done with this food!

My dog has been eating this product for awhile now. However, last week, she became very ill and was throwing up and had diarrhea. We thought she got into the garbage or ate something on one of her walks. The diarrhea did not stop and in fact got worse and was very bloody. We took her in the Emergency Vets Office because I was so worried. They could not figure out what was wrong with her. They gave her antibiotics and told us to only feed her boiled hamburger or chicken. Within a day she was acting normal and happy. The vet followed up and told us to start feeding her the regular food. In about two days the issues started up again. Looking it up online and reading the fellow complaints I'm glad I figured out it was from her dog food. It seems highly unlikely that all these people's dogs have had the same issues without the company doing anything.

I run a small breed rescue. I keep three different kinds of food down for the dogs to choose from. The only two (A Papillon and a Toy Poodle) that chose Beneful Healthy Weight became extremely sick nearly a week ago, with almost constant watery diarrhea and occasional vomiting. Beneful made 2 of my dogs extremely ill. They both became dehydrated and their watery stools started having streaks of blood in them. They had little to no energy and I was syringing Pedialyte down them round the clock.

The night before last, I boiled boneless, skinless chicken breast with rice and poured a fair amount of Pedialyte on it. They both ate it straight down. By yesterday afternoon, their stools were 80% better and they started urinating healthily. Today, they are better yet, with their stools still very soft but not watery. They are still on the chicken/rice diet, which I plan to continue for several more days. The Beneful is going back to the store, and I will never purchase or recommend it again! I plan on filing a complaint with the FDA/Veterinary division.

I had been feeding my greyhound with Beneful for 2 months because she can be a picky eater and would heartily eat the Beneful. Then she started throwing up and having basically liquid diarrhea with blood in it. I took her to 2 vets who both told me she must have gotten into garbage or something and diagnosed her with pancreatitis and gave her some antibiotics.

A month later, the same exact thing happened and I took her to a third vet who diagnosed her with the same thing but kept her overnight at the vets for 2 nights because this time, it was worse. They also mentioned that her kidney levels were elevated, which was never something that showed up in previous blood panels. I have since switched her to Innova and she is doing better. I have since read that many other people have had their dogs experience similar symptoms and nothing has been put out by the Beneful makers!

I bought Beneful at Wal-Mart thinking it was a decent food at 25% protein. My 13-year old pointer, who has always been healthy, started throwing up undigested food within the first day or two of starting it. After 2 nights of this, I decreased the amount I was feeding him, thinking maybe he was just eating too much prior to bedtime. The next day, he hurled mucous and/or vomited 7 or 8 times. 24 hours since his last Beneful, he is now holding down a small amount of homemade chicken and rice. I am so glad I read these reviews and others before trying to feed him more Beneful. I am hoping my dog is over the hump and on the mend. I am really angry that nothing has been published by Nestle Purina PetCare (the makers of Beneful) about this potential problem. It's obviously affecting many dogs!

For the last couple of weeks, he's been ridiculously thirsty, and then constantly needing to go out, without the diarrhea at this point, ever since I bought the last bag of Beneful, Playful Life. We've been getting a Beneful product pretty regularly over the past year. I'd been buying the Playful Life recently, and he did really well on it. His coat became shiny, and the dandruff greatly decreased.

He started gaining weight, so we switched back to the healthy weight, which he didn't like much. I bought a small bag then of the Playful Life, and added it, and he ate normally again. The last bag though, he's hardly touched. Reading all these posts, I am thoroughly shocked and pretty dismayed. We've used Purina products for decades with no problems. The vet even suggested we consider euthanasia. It's been six days since he had any Beneful and he is slowly getting better. Since he had eaten Purina brand before, I did not anticipate any problems.

My dog started to have a very poor appetite, lethargic, significant abdominal discomfort and bloody mucous stools. She is also very thirsty. She clearly has colitis. (I am a physician). I had thought that she got colitis (bowel infection) from a dehydrated chicken treat I had given her about four weeks ago but her symptoms continue to reoccur. She will sniff her food but is very reluctant to eat it. Half the time she won't eat it. Interestingly, she will be hungry for other food items that are safe for dogs such as chicken and rice. I had taken her off the food for a few days and she got better. Symptoms returned when I restarted it.

I went online tonight to see if there has been a recall on the Beneful. I am certain that this food is causing my animals symptoms. I feel very fortunate that I have discovered these complaints before my dog got too sick to have to put her to sleep. This morning, we had 6 vomiting puppies with diarrhea and another pup just lifeless. We rushed them to the vet thinking it was Parvo since it's an airborne disease, but they tested negative for Parvo, negative for worms, and no fever. The common denominator was the Beneful Puppy food! The vet was surprised because he said that Beneful was good food for them.

I called Purina and they told me they didn't have any known issues or problems and would send out coupons and replacement vouchers for the potential bad bag of puppy food. The lady on the phone also suggessted that we feed our puppies from the Original formula but just feed them more than usual to meet the nutrients.

My poor little 1.5 lb puppy has vomited over and over and is miserable. I'm giving him some pedialyte and water frequently, and according to the vet's instructions, Pepto to all the pups. After reading everyone's horror stories, I'm completely shocked that this is not something Purina is telling people about when they call in. I thought this was a stomach flu going around. Well, they stopped eating this. However, one started getting so sick that we had her on IVs for 2 days. Before we could get her on it for the third day and the vets could not figure out the issue, she passed away. I have been going crazy trying to figure out what is happening and thought I would check out the food on the website and found this. It is really strange that there are so many with the same problem and same food brand. I bought a different brand last night thinking this might be the problem and they have been eating like they haven't eaten in weeks. I also wanted to make a note on how thirsty they have been. I am so relieved to have read other peoples complaints regarding Beneful Dry Dog Food. I was beginning to wonder if something was wrong with our beloved, healthy six-year old pug, Keesha. We have never bought her Beneful Dry Dog Food until a few days ago. The next morning, I awoken to throw up at the end of my bed. I know dogs can have an upset stomach once in awhile so I didn't think much of it. Sure enough the next night, Keesha threw up at the end of bed again. Still I wasn't too worried because she was her normal self during the day.

Well on night 3, last night, sure enough she threw up. This time I was awake to be with her. I gave her some water, cleaned up the mess and went to bed. Sure enough at 2:30 in the morning, I was awoken to Keesha making awful noises. She was near the patio door and vomiting in very large amounts. I gave her some water, cleaned up the floor and picked Keesha up to comfort her. She was very hot, which is not like her to get so warm. In the morning, I started research online and sure enough found this site. I went out earlier today and bought her the usual brand of dog food she has had plenty of times with no problems. She seems okay but I will tell everyone my story and will never buy Beneful again!

I switched my yorkies to Beneful about two and a half months ago. One started losing weight, vomiting, and had many days with diarrhea. She also started to drink large amounts of water, and was having many accidents. She would be walking to get to the door to get outside, and suddenly just urinate on the floor, right in front of us standing to hold the door open for her. She never had problems like this in the past. Finally, two weeks ago, we had to have her put to sleep. She was 8 lbs, and at her death, a little over 4 lbs.

Our other yorkie just spent 5 days in the ICU at our vets last week. She started to have a severe sudden attack, and vomited 14 times, became very lethargic, and couldn't even stand. We took her to the emergency vet, and they were able to save her. She was on IV for 5 days, and lost over 2lbs. We just brought her home on Saturday, 1/28/12. She was on a bland diet (for easy digestion, chicken and rice). She was doing fine, and we felt like she was making a full recovery. The vet said that on Tuesday, we could start to introduce her back to dry food (a 50/50 mix of chicken and rice and Beneful).

On Wednesday morning (2/2/12) she began vomiting (6 times), and was rapidly declining. We took her back to the vet where she remains on an IV. My vet just called and told me she thinks there is a link with the Beneful food, because she just had another dog come in with the same problems that was eating Beneful, and is currently being treated alongside my dog. I am just sick over the fact that we have lost one dog, and almost lost another. My poor kids (8 and 10) are living in fear right now, that we might lose another member of our family. What is being done about this? How many dogs need to die, or be near death, until this problem is looked into?

We purchased a bag of Beneful healthy weight dry dog food from dollar general. When I opened the bag to scoop some out, several bugs ran out of the sealed bag. They turned to be roaches. Well, those several bugs turned into several more bugs. We have attempted to get rid of them ourselves with foggers, bait, sticky traps, etc with no luck.

Now, we are going to have to pay for a pest control service that we cannot afford. Why are these bags not being checked for this? This is not the first time this has happened with this brand. Same thing had happened a couple of years ago with the same kind of food. I am mad that we have had to spend this much money on this sort of thing. I am switching foods!

Three months ago, I bought Beneful Regular dry dog food for my two dogs, a healthy active 4 year old Chow mix and a 13 year old Silky Terrier. Shortly after we started feeding them Beneful, the Chow mix began to excessively drink water and urinating in the house which he never did before. He also began to lose his hair on his back and scratching. Additionally, he developed difficulty walking, became lethargic, and cried as if in pain even when laying down. We took him to the vet but she said there was nothing wrong with his leg.

After he finished the first bag, the urinating stopped but he never stopped the excessive drinking. Two weeks ago, I bought a third bag of Beneful Regular and within a couple of days, my Chow mix began to vomit a foamy clear substance six to eight times a day, usually after he drank almost a bowl of water. You could hear his stomach rattle after he would drink his water which he could never get enough of. He lost his ability to jump on the couch and bed, would not come into the family room with us, became very lethargic, struggled to walk, had terrible gas, and when we would try to pet him he would look down at the floor and flinch as if he were in pain. The last couple of days, he would not come into the house but would lay down at the back door. He also developed diarrhea and totally stopped eating his food.

My wife took him to the vet this afternoon and she told us he was extremely dehydrated (no way with the amount of water he was drinking) and had a temperature of 103. They took x-rays and found that both kidneys were three to four times the normal size and that they both appeared to have cysts (they looked like grapes). She said he was having kidney failure and that he was in a lot of pain. She recommended we put him to sleep which we did. Because of the quickness of our dog's death, my wife began to investigate the food and was sickened by what she read. Many of the symptoms of other dogs who have eaten this brand of dog food are identical to what our dogs have experienced. Our dog went from an incredibly healthy, active dog to sickly, weak and having to be put down all in the span of the three months he was on Beneful Regular dog food.

I have no idea if the Beneful was the cause of his death but his deterioration occurred after he began eating the food. I do know he had no physical problems of any kind prior to eating the Beneful. Last night, our Silky vomited twice. He has also stopped eating the food, drinks excessively and appears to be bloated. Needless to say, we have stopped feeding him the Beneful.

I started my one year old blue pitbull on Beneful 4 days ago. The first two days, she wouldn't eat. On the 3rd day she finally ate then threw up and had diarrhea. Last night she had one of those funny “dogs gone wild" moments where she was running all over the house. It was not until I got on the floor and started playing with her that I realized that it wasn't so funny. She was covered in hives. I think she had essentially "gone mad" from the itching. Still not considering her food as the cause, I immediately gave her an oatmeal bath and Benadryl. She settled down about 45 minutes later. By the time I went to bed, she was manic again and the hives had not gone away. So, I used cold compresses.

Overnight she threw up more and is stand offish today, hiding under the bed, which she never does. She usually follows me everywhere. So, I woke up this morning and started researching and found this site. My plan of action, until I can get her to the vet tomorrow, is to continue the Benadryl, make sure she is drinking water, given another oatmeal bath, k9 cortisone spray, cold compresses, and maybe this evening a grain free dinner. She only ate 2 bowls so I am praying that no significant damage has been done and we can get through this. Then once we get through this, I am going to make it my goal to get this poison off of the shelves.

There is nothing new or unfamiliar in either our house or yard, and we haven't taken her on any walks since before the food switch. It only happened after she is fed, which makes me think that it is the dog food causing her to have an allergic reaction.

My husband picked up a bag of Beneful dog food for my 10-year old Rottweiler mix in July, while I was on vacation. I came home to a sick dog. Diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, chunks of fur falling off of him, flaky skin, gagging without throwing up, lethargy, disorientation and refusing to eat. I took him to the vet multiple times over the next few months, where they prescribed anti-diarrhea meds, probiotics, two different pain meds and prescription dog food. My dog refused to eat the Beneful dog food, prescription dog food and I resorted to cooking chicken and rice twice a day to feed him. After a few weeks, he even refused my cooking and I could not get him to take down the meds.

The vet claimed that he could not determine the cause without additional tests and x-rays. During his final examination, the vet informed me that my dog was in a lot of pain. My options were to continue medicating him and see what happens. Ultimately, I had to put my dog down on 9/25. This had to be the most horrible thing I've ever had to do. I am currently dogsitting my sister's Border Collie. I gave him a cup of the Beneful dog food this morning and he did not eat it. I thought this was odd because this dog eats anything.

I thought I would check online to see if maybe Beneful has been recalled. I am so disturbed and disgusted by what I have come across. I had to put my dog down prematurely because I was poisoning him with tainted dog food? Is there anywhere I can have this dog food tested? Why is Nestle-Purina poisoning pets? Near the end of August, we almost lost our 13-year old Cocker Spaniel. He was weak, lethargic, had bloody diarrhea and constantly vomiting. It came out of nowhere. Within two days, he just refused to eat or drink so we ended up at the vets a week later. He was through I.V. fluids for elevated liver enzymes, did some testing but he barely improved. Then, the vet gave us three options: take him home and love him for what little time we had left, put him to sleep, or take him to UT given his age. When nothing turned up, we decided to take him home. Thankfully, we were leaving to go to NC for a week and didn't want to leave him home with my brother. After about four weeks, he appeared to be getting better. We had cleaned the entire house with bleach prior to leaving.

Three weeks later, my 10-year old black Labrador started with the same symptoms. But in the course of the day, it progressed so rapidly that she was essentially pooping out bright, red blood. She had labored breathing and unable to stand. Then, we were off to the emergency vet in Knoxville since we could tell that she was struggling. However, the vet didn't think that she would make it through the night. We put her to sleep because we didn't want her to suffer. To get rid of the smell and germs, the entire house was scrubbed again with bleach, then ammonia.

Two weeks later, our 3-year old Golden Retriever experienced the same thing. So, I thought, this is no coincidence. We had gotten new food for two weeks in September and nothing has changed. I thought, let me goggle the dog food to see if there were any recalls. Then, I found all of the complaints that even my vet was surprised. I know that I love my pets. I had recently decided to find a better quality and better tasting dog food for my Bostons. So I set out to the store in hopes of finding a good dog food at a reasonable price. I came across Beneful Healthy Weight which from reading the bag sounded like a great dog food for my babies. And it was also a pretty good price for such a big bag. So I bought a 40 lb. bag and took it home to test it out. Well, my dog's absolutely loved it. They ate it like it was the best thing ever. So I decided to permanently switch them to it. We feed all our small puppies Purina Puppy Chow but was out one day and decided to feed our healthy fat, little,10-week old Boston the Beneful.

She ate it for about 4-5 days and then started having severe bloody diarrhea. Before she had ate the food, she had perfect firm stool. The diarrhea smelled awful and the first thing we thought was, "Oh no, it's gotta be parvovirus." So we took her to the vet and it wasn't parvovirus and they thought maybe she had ate something that upset her tummy. So when we got her home, we started her back on her normal Purina Puppy Chow and two days later, she had perfect firm stool again.

At the time, we thought nothing of it and just figured maybe she had a sensitive stomach or had ate some fuzz or something off one of her toys that may have made her sick. In the meantime, we had kept feeding our other dogs Beneful Healthy Weight. Now, our dogs have been on this food for about three weeks as of today, 2/28/11. Most of our dogs have had diarrhea for the first few days after switching but we thought it was just the change in food and that it was nothing to worry about.

Now, about four days ago, yet another one of our fat healthy Bostons is very sick. She is four months old and has been going through very bad episodes of throwing up, loss of appetite and is very lethargic. She throws up this clear, foamy liquid and doesn't want to eat at all. She looks like skin and bones and this has all happened within four days!

All she does is drink water and go lay down. She used to be a very hyper playful dog but since she's been eating the Beneful Healthy Weight, she's been so sick that she can't do anything. I have read the previous complaints on this food and I will not be buying Beneful ever again for my dogs. With all the issues related to this food, it should be taken off the shelves. It is clearly making dogs very sick and in some cases, possibly causing death! Consumers need to be made aware of the dangers of feeding their dogs Beneful.

I have fed my 3 dogs Beneful Heathlty Weight for bout about 7 years. All 3 dogs have died in the past 6 months with the same symptoms. They are different breeds and different ages. They all started with bloating in their stomach and loss of appetite, diarrhea and they started looking like they were starved. Their spine stuck out and hip bones, etc. started protruding which was made worse by fluid build up in their stomach. Two of them, I thought had congestive heart failure because of the symptoms, and the vets said it looked like they were having heart problems, but I think the heart problems may have been caused by the fluid in the abdomen.

The last dog we just had but to sleep was diagnosed with having IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and another strange disease that only occurs in small breed dogs like Yorkies and Wheaten Terriers. Our dog was a boxer. The disease was an auto immune disease that caused her to not process protein in her body and cause plasma to separate from the blood that cause the fluids in the abdomen. It took thousands of dollars in test to get this diagnosis. We were having her stomach drained about every 3 weeks, but she had lost so much weight and muscle that she could not function anymore, not to mention severe diarrhea. The point to all this is the other two dogs had almost had the exact symptoms and all died within 6 months, and they all started eating Beneful Healty Weight at the same time. We bought a bag of Beneful dog food and fed it to my lab as normal. That night she was so sick. She had diarrhea so bad that she went all over the front room of my house; it was covered in ****. She never goes in the house. I knew something was wrong. I took her to the vet and they ran several tests, could not find anything wrong with her and said that it had to have been something that she ate. They put her on medication and she started to feel a little better. We had her on the brat diet for three days to let her stomach recover. Then the vet told me just to put her back on her food, so I did. Well, guess what happened? She got sick once again. This time, we thankfully woke up and stayed outside with her for most of the night.

I had to take her to the vet once again although we never did related it to the food. We just thought she had a virus, more medication and test. Well needless to say, I noticed that her food container had a light green substance which looked like mildew, so I threw away a large bag of food and cleaned out her food container. Once I did that, I did go and buy more Beneful since it is really the only food out there which she can eat. She has a sensitive stomach and she was fine. Thank God. I really think that the manufacturers of this product should be responsible for the cost of all situations such as this and more important what if she did not get better? I would have lost my baby and that would have been horrible. People just need to be held accountable for the products that they sell.

We have fed our dog Beneful Healthy Weight for about 7 years. We tried a better rated food, but he really preferred the Beneful, which we supplement with some cheese or meat each meal. We recently opened a new bag. Since then, he has vomited once (two days ago) and today refused to eat the food - the first time that has ever happened. His appetite seemed okay as he was still looking for some small handouts. So I gave him some macaroni and cheese (about a half cup) and he ate it right up. So it isn't that his appetite is bad. I am wondering after reading similar postings here if there is a problem with recent lots of Beneful. Tomorrow we will try a different brand and see what happens.

I bought Beneful dog food 2 weeks ago and was wondering where all the bugs were coming from inside my house. Little maggots on the ceiling; I found a maggot in my dog's water dish and discovered bugs inside the dog food bag as well. It was covered with bugs! My dog has had loss of appetite, eating grass, vomiting, shivering and was going days without eating.

We had been feeding our Chesapeake Bay Retriever a different brand of dog food when she began blowing coat. She does this twice a year, and her skin gets dry while it happens. So, we started her on Beneful Healthy Radiance, which she has eaten before without problems. She was eating the Beneful for about a week when she started eating grass, vomiting, shivering, and losing her appetite. We thought it was the grass or maybe hairballs and put her on a bland diet. She was doing fine for about 36 hours, but not touching the half a bowl of Beneful that we never took away. This morning, she was great, energetic, and hungry. She gobbled down the half bowl of Beneful. This afternoon she tried to eat grass. She's shivering again and she vomited her lunch and about half a bowl of partially digested Beneful. We won't be feeding her any more Purina products and are looking into homemade dog food recipes.

I fed my 6 year old AKC Golden Retriever with Purina Beneful brand of dog food. She became ill. I made several trips to the vet and they said that it's cancer but could not find cancer cells. She had all the signs/symptoms same as the other dogs affected by eating this food like lack of appetite, vomiting and lethargic. She died after 8 weeks and 5 vet visits. A week after she died, my other dog became ill. I switched his food only because the store did not have the Beneful in stock. He has not become ill since the switch.

Two weeks ago, we switched from Beneful regular to Beneful Healthy Weight. Since then, our Pomeranian has experienced frightening episodes of lethargy, vomiting, violent bouts of diarrhea, and trembling/shaking. This is a previously healthy 3-year old male who was once very active and smiley but who is not weak, exhausted and depressed. Luckily, after several emergency clinic trips, I put two and two together and replaced the food with something else, and he seems to be recuperating. I am furious.

I purchased a bag of Beneful dog food. Just a couple of days later, I found the airtight container to be covered inside and out with millions of what I learned are grain mites. My dog was experiencing severe itching and hair loss due to scratching as well as an awful odor. I had to discard approximately $75 worth of dog food, $200 worth of other products that were in the vicinity, as well as purchasing $63 worth of cleaning products and storage materials. And the time I invested in ridding our home of the mites.

I've fed my nine-month old puppy Beneful puppy food since I got her around three months old. I've always kept her food in an airtight container. Because I put it in the container, I was not able to furnish the product information/batch for the food. I had to throw out 12 pounds of food. Now I'm questioning whether any Purina food is healthy. I've got two cats and am now scared their food might have grain mites. Last month, I took her to the vet because she had consistently soft fecal matter (not really diarrhea, but not hard like it should be). I kept taking my dog to the vet, but they could find nothing wrong. I took her again in May and they ran a test. They found grain mites. He told me that Beneful has been recently known to have grain mites. I couldn't believe I've been feeding my puppy grain mites. Who knows for how long?

Pepper started having seizures after switching from Purina One to Beneful Healthy Weight. I switched to Beneful because of its ad for being healthy with all the needed nutrition including vegetables. Pepper had a seizure months after switching. She had another three or four months later. She had one on May 22, 2009 and again on June 17, 2009. The June 17 episode was different from all the rest. All the rest occurred while sleeping, the June episode occurred when she was wide awake plus in the late afternoon early evening time versus the middle of the night like her other episodes.

She had three back to back on June 17, the last being very, very severe in the middle of walking through my kitchen. She started bouncing off the walls and floor uncontrollably. The seizure lasted several minutes until she collapsed in the floor. I called the vet to make an appointment and couldn't get one until five days later. Thinking that her seizures don't happen very often, I thought that would be okay. That night, June 18, Pepper had seven seizures and I was up all night with her. The next morning, I called the vet and told them to see her on an emergency bases. I took her to the vet as a walk in and waited for 2.5 hours when she had another seizure in the office. They immediately took her back and started treatment. The first thing out of the vets mouth when I told her what I was feeding her was he had a 100 cases of the same thing with other dogs being fed Beneful. He recommended going back to Purina One or Costco's Kirkland brand. They gave Pepper two seizure medicines, one tablet one liquid to be given twice daily.

After bringing her home, she had three more very light seizures but has been seizure free since then. The problem is now she doesn't even know her own name, doesn't know where she is, has lost all her house training and even get totally lost outside and can't find her way back to the house from my front yard. She wonders around aimlessly totally lost and since she doesn't even remember her name, does not hear or answer when called. Pepper is alive but doesn't even know it and I feel it is all Beneful's fault. I can't describe the loss I will feel having to put her down after 11 years of love and companionship. I would definitely pursue any action needed to help with my loss and also to bring it to the attention of other pet owners who are unaware of the dangers of Beneful's so called healthy dog foods.

How and why can a product like Beneful stay on the shelves to be sold to unsuspecting pet owners? You can bet I will tell everybody I come in contact with about this, but word of mouth isn't broad enough to help many pets in time. Something like this should get national attention not because of my loss with Pepper but to save many pets across the nation who don't know just like I didn't know when I started feeding Pepper Beneful.

I got a strong whiff of it while cleaning it up, and I was nauseated and feverish for two days afterward. From time to time, my dog in the past year has had similar vomiting spells, and we almost always have used Beneful food.

I have been using Beneful Dog Food for my dog and just last night discovered thousands of "mites" on the outside of the dog feeder. My brother noticed a white film on the top of the automatic feeder that looked like dust. When we went to wipe it off, it felt wet. Upon further inspection, we realized that there were millions of tiny white bugs/mites that were moving around. I assumed that they had somehow come in from outside and were trying to get inside the feeder to the food. We took the feeder outside to clean and investigated further.

This morning I decided to give him a fresh bowl of food from the sealed bag in my laundry room and to my dismay found that it was infested with these mites. I have seen this white film in the bag before but I thought it was just "dust" from the food. I never realized it was some sort of bug. I am now going to start cleaning out everything to make sure I have removed all of these mites or whatever they are. I am shocked at this and it makes me sick to know that I have been feeding this to my dog. I would like some sort of explanation concerning this finding.

Fired off complaint to Purina. There's a growth in the Beneful Prepared Meal - Beef Stew. Unless melamine now comes in green and you can see it, it's probably mold since it's a mint green. Really starting to get annoyed these dog food firms can't get their blank together, especially at the prices they charge! We'll see what the store has to say. Will chuck it if no satisfaction and switch to a decent brand if there is one out there!

My Maltese dog went into acute kidney failure in mid-February 2007 just 4-5 days after I began to give her Purina's Beneful Weight Control dry dog food. I had been feeding her Purina's Fit & Trim brand for several years but the stores I shop in recently had stopped carrying that brand in 5 lb. bags. I compared the ingredient lists, which seemed very similar, and figured that because Purina made them both, it would be safe to make the switch.

At first, we did not recognize our dog's failure to eat as a problem. She often ate only one meal a day and not always at the same time. My vet had told me it was a small dog's way of maintaining a steady weight. But when I had to stay home from work on Wed., Feb. 14, 2007, because of a serious snow storm, I could see a drastic change in our dog. She was listless and not drinking water. Late in the day she began to vomit.

I took her to the vet first thing Thursday morning and she was admitted to the hospital and put on intravenous fluids and antibiotics. The vet suspected kidney failure. I did tell the vet that she hadn't exhibited symptoms until after 4-5 days of eating a new food. As this was prior to any knowledge of the Menu Food debacle, the vet felt the new food would not have been a factor and it was more likely to do with the dog taking Enacard to lower her blood pressure to deal with a heart murmur. I had no reason to doubt this, except it kept nagging at me that the dog had not exhibited any of the warning signs I had been told to watch for until she ate the Beneful.

Unfortunately, the fluids and medicine made no improvement on her kidney function and we made the horrible decision to euthanize her on Sat., Feb. 17. The vet had told me there was no cure and that taking her off IV fluids would cause her to suffer greatly.
