We started feeding our registered Yorkie Sarah Beneful dog food about two years ago. She started having occasional seizures, which the vet could find no reason for. She suddenly stopped eating and having incontinence. (She was only 8 years old.) We took her to the vet and blood work determined she was starting to experience kidney failure. She stayed at the vet overnight for observation, 2 nights to receive intravenous fluids to try to jump start her kidneys. She seemed to improve but almost as soon as she got home, she started wandering around aimlessly and evacuating her bowels on the floor.
She was rushed back to the vet where he determined she'd gone blind over the two-hour period that she was home. He was astounded she'd deteriorated so quickly. She was kept another night with no treatment so he could take another blood sample the following morning. Lab results indicated her kidneys had failed completely. She was very miserable and didn't know what was going on around her and was nearly unconscious. The doctor said he wasn't the least bit optimistic about her recovery. We decided at this time to have her euthanized. These vet bills amounted to about $800. This little dog was our pride and joy. She never expected anything from us but to take care of her and in return gave us unconditional love, joy and happiness. I feel that by feeding her Beneful, we failed her miserably.

My German Shepherd/Lab was only able to eat Beneful original brand. She had a sensitive stomach and could only eat this brand with no side effects. I did have her and my other dog, a Maltese, eat the Healthy Fiesta brand for a few months between August to September because she was putting on some weight, but I switched back to the original brand because family members felt the other regular brand was safer (don't switch up her food). However, in October 2012, I noticed a big weight loss - enough that her ribs were showing and the area around her nose, eyes, and mouth became extremely bony. I thought the family members were not keeping her fed enough, so I took the responsibility of feeding both dogs morning and night. She put on a little bit of weight, and then in November and December she was showing signs of a urinary tract infection.
I had lost my job and could not afford the expensive vet bill, so no, I did not take her to the vet. I bathed her and kept her feed and steady supply of water. It cleared up for a couple of weeks but then it turned to excess urinating where she was having accidents in the house and she never did that. Then she turned back to no or little urine. Unfortunately, we lost our precious family member last week 1/10/13. It was awful, she drank water and threw up non-stop; she developed heavy panting and a swollen chest cavity and passed away. I have wrestled with the guilt of not being able to take her to the vet, and then I was informed of this issue. Yes, there could have been something else, but like everyone else, my dog ate your food religiously and just in the last 3 months showed signs of illness and died. My dog had been to the vet up until this past year regularly and had never showed signs of being sick.
If Purina Beneful is responsible, I am horrified that a pet company cares so little about our pets that they will not publish a recall and test all food. As a company, don't you think you should provide some proof that it is not your fault instead of ignoring it? I learned that a neighbour’s dog died around the same time as mine and was not a regular Beneful eater, it was an impulse buy for convenience and their dog died as well. Their other dog had to have blood transfusions. I have notified the company, the Humane Society, this website, and I will be contacting the local news as well. Our animals have rights and this cannot be ignored. I will be telling everyone I know with pets to not buy any Purina products until this issue is completely resolved.
Like others listed here, I still have the food and my other dog will be tested as soon as possible. This was a huge unexpected loss for our family and we would like some answers. As I look back, there were times during September/October/November that food supply was not available; only little bags instead of the big bags. Was this due to an investigation? Why were we not informed then? This is very hard to take especially so close to losing our family member. We should have been informed so we could make our own decisions.

I have been feeding my pug Beneful Fiesta for almost 6 months. I recently bought a new bag of Beneful with expiration date 10/13 at Walmart. My pug who normally gobbles his food didn't want to eat. He actually shunned his food. When I got him to eat his food, he threw it up. After reading the recent reviews, I will never subject any of my pets to Purina products again. I am returning this product to Walmart and switching his food immediately. I am very disappointed there has not been a recall of this product.

I began feeding my dogs Beneful about a year ago. Other than the occasional upset stomach, nothing was wrong with either of them, until they shared a new type of Beneful food - Beneful Healthy Radiance. Within days, my family found themselves in a month-long struggle that cost us nearly $1,500 and the life of a beloved friend. My first dog, an 11-year-old chow/German Shepherd mix, became sick first. He began to have excessive diarrhea, having accident after accident in the house. Then one day, he stopped going to the bathroom completely. We took him to the vet and he determined that my dog had an enlarged prostrate, though the cause was unknown. For the next week, we paid for every test possible, only to be told that they were stumped. They wanted to send him to a specialist, but considering that he had not been able to urinate/defecate for days, we decided to put him down on 12/14/2012.
I did not have any suspicions about the food until a week later, when my 16-month-old Jack Russell Terrier started exhibiting similar problems. It began with diarrhea, followed by excessive vomiting. He refused to eat his dog food, though his appetite was still strong because he wanted food - just not that food. I gave it a few days, thinking he might have just been out of sorts. On 12/26/2012, I came home to find piles of blood on the floor mixed with a little stool. I immediately rushed my terrier to the vet. They told me that, for some reason, his intestines were hemorrhaging. They ruled out all possible causes. The vet recommended that I hospitalize him because they were afraid he would soon go into shock. That would have cost over a thousand dollars, so I decided to take him home.
For two weeks, I held him in my arms - giving him steroids, baby food and water by hand. It was slow going, but he was finally back to his normal self this week. The correlation between their illnesses is too strong to ignore. I should note that the dogs did not live at the same residence. My 11-year-old continued to live with my parents after I left home because my parents were so attached to him. The reason I strongly suspect Beneful food is this: the bag of Healthy Radiance was originally consumed by my 11-year-old. After he died, I took his remaining food home for my terrier so it did not go to waste. It was within a day of eating that food that my terrier became ill.
I am appalled and angry that there have been concerns over this food, yet it has not been recalled or sufficiently investigated. Maybe somebody could have saved me a lot of money and heartache if only they had taken responsibility. I am immensely grateful that my terrier was able to fight this off. He is now eating the most expensive food on the market, but it is well worth it.

We had a puppy on Purina dog food, who inexplicably when eating Beneful and the ProPlan, became incredibly ill and was forced to be put down because of seizures. We didn't make the connection until after the fact but he was fine until we switched his food to Beneful (we were out of town and didn't have his normal Fromms) which is when he had bloody stools and his first seizure, losing almost all muscle function. Then after putting him on a chicken and rice bland diet, he started regaining his ability to walk and our vet recommended ProPlan. We began incorporating it into his diet and he began getting very lethargic and sick again.
After a few weeks on ProPlan, he went into a series of heart breaking seizures that ended up killing him. We have x-rays of an enlarged heart and organs, as well as results showing liver and kidney problems. This spanned over a period from when he was 4-7 months old. It wasn't until we switched our current dog's food to Cedar Creek (Purina's upscale brand) and he had the exact same bloody mucus stools right away that we made the connection. We lost one of the most compassionate and incredible companions we've have ever had and unfortunately, we are not the only ones. Two of the puppies brothers who were in foster care both ate Beneful and experienced the same problems a few weeks earlier. One died and the other was put on a completely holistic diet immediately and eventually survived. Something is clearly wrong with Purina Dog Food and I would be happy to back everything I say up in court.

I came across the article regarding the Purina Foods by chance. All the while I was going through the same things these other few hundred people were experiencing. My 4-year-old Bulldog was stricken suddenly with kidney failure, directly after we tried a couple new foods including Beneful after the store we shopped at stopped selling our prior brand. Izzy stopped eating. She started throwing up, lost weight and became lethargic. Blood panels showed her BUN at 220. She is currently managing chronic kidney failure and we are only buying time with her. Purina needs to re-examine and try to find out if there is something to these claims.
Izzy has been with us since a young pup and I never imagined losing her this way. She has been a healthy, vibrant dog until 2 weeks ago. I still have the bag of used Beneful in case this becomes an issue. Any information that can be provided to us from Purina would be so helpful. We have trusted Purina brands for over 15 years and I don't want to lose trust in them. I hope that there is some resolution to this.

In 2011, my 12-year-old Bichon Frise had to be put down due to seizures. He had a lot of blood tests run on him, and a lot of other tests but nothing(!) came up. He was put on meds, but that didn't help. He still had the seizures and he just didn't look happy. He was suffering; he kept having seizures. The whole time while he was suffering, he was still getting fed Beneful. Back then, I did not know about any of the complaints that Beneful had because if I did, my dog would have still been here if the food was recalled. He was eating Beneful for a good 1 or 2 years before his seizures started to occur.
I also have a 3-year-old Maltese who just had a seizure Tuesday night, January 15th. I sat down and actually thought about it like my other dog had seizures, and now this one is having seizures. Something is not right. I thought it was something they were eating, something outside. I couldn't think what would cause a 3-year-old dog to have a seizure. He's so young! Then I thought the only 2 things my dogs had in common was that they both ate Beneful Original. That's when I did research on Beneful and saw all the articles and reviews about this food & now I am certain that Beneful killed my Bichon Frise and it is now killing my little Maltese. This has to stop. Beneful is killing dogs nationwide with no recall! They will pay. I promise you. Something can and will be done about this horrible trash food.

After reading your report on Purina's Beneful dog food killing dogs nationwide, I felt the need to report. My cat has had the exact same problems in the symptoms list. We have spent $1,500 in emergency vet bills to find out we need to change my cat's food. For years he has eaten this and it came upon him fast. He started vomiting, vomiting with extreme diarrhea, and excessive water drinking. I noticed him with lethargy and getting weight loss. The vet told me to feed him only wet cat food, so I found a gluten-free, grain-free brand called BFF. Due to all this trauma, he has developed mild diabetes. But it seems to be controlled by the food change, which has been a struggle. I also only give him Orijen dry cat food now. He just has not been the same since this problem. He was always so healthy until this rapid onset.

Our 3 dogs have been on Beneful Healthy Weight for a good 4 years and never had a problem. Until recently, we purchased a bag of Beneful probably about 1 month ago from our NEX. We started having diarrhea issue with our two smaller dogs and couldn't figure out what was causing it. We took the dogs to the vet to see what it was. They alerted us when we told them what food they eat, and that they have seen a couple of dogs eating the same dog food with the same problems. Luckily, we caught it early but won't be buying Beneful anymore. Our dogs are our kids and won't put them in harm’s way.

I have a 6-year-old registered female Sheltie. Two years ago, the vet stated she was worried about the dog being overweight, so I started her on Beneful Healthy Weight. In one year, she lost 10 pounds and seemed to be on track. Recently, she started having problems with her kidneys and seemed to be suffering from excessive thirst. Then I found out that Purina is having a problem with Beneful, making dogs sick namely kidney failure. I immediately removed my dog from Purina Beneful and will never again purchase a Purina product - neither dog food or dog treats. I also will never purchase another dog food or dog treat that is not manufactured in the USA (which is almost next to impossible).
I am hoping that my dog's health will turn around and that she will not suffer any longtime ill effects. I cannot believe that Purina does not care about our pets. And obviously, neither does Consumer Affairs as there has not been any recall or USA notice on this Beneful problem. Who is going to replace our pets that we lost? Who will pay for our vet visits? Who is going to reimburse us for what this is going to cost us? Not that we can replace our lost pets, but someone should be paying for this and it should not be those of us who trusted a big company like Purina! Purina, you should be ashamed of yourself!

All I've ever fed my dogs was Beneful. I never had a problem with it until I noticed my dogs looked like they were losing weight! Our female Boston Terrier ate so much and looked like we starved her for days. Our male didn't look as skinny. On October 31st, we came home and noticed that our female dog wasn't really moving and she looked really ill. She didn't want to get up to go to the bathroom and had massive diarrhea. She died within 30 minutes. We had no idea what had happened to her and unfortunately didn't have money for an autopsy. Never did we think the food had anything to do with it. During the next couple of months, I still kept feeding our male dog the food and he started looking very skinny as well. My husband kept asking me if he was being fed and my answer was always yes, I feed him!
It got so bad that we could see his spine and ribs. He looked very ill and would throw up constantly. We decided to change the food. We thought it was the only explanation since he's a very healthy dog. Within a week of eating the new food, you could tell he was feeling much better and was gaining his weight back! We were just so glad he was okay. When I saw this article on FB yesterday, I was in complete shock! I finally realized that it was the food that had made our dogs so sick and eventually killed our dog. I've trusted this food brand for so many years and it killed our pet, yet it is still being sold? Why isn't anyone doing anything about this?!

My dog Gizmo was a very healthy 9-year old mixed terrier that for the past few months started having seizures. The vet lab reports did not indicate seizures were due to tick bites and all tests came back normal. After being prescribed Phenobarbital and taking it for two months, the symptoms did not improve. Two weeks ago, he started to not eat and became even more lethargic. He died soon after and I can't help but wonder if this product Purina Beneful is responsible. By recent stories I have read, I believe this product killed him.

My husband purchased a bag of Beneful at a local home improvement store on Sunday, 1/13. I fed it to our 8-year old Pomeranian and 1.5 year old Chiweenie. The Chiweenie didn't eat much of it, but the Pom ate normally. That night, the Pom had large amounts of stool including diarrhea. Dogs get that sometimes, so I didn't think anything of it. Then he had it again for the next 2 nights. I found the article regarding the Beneful dry food on 1/16, and I immediately got different food. The dog was fine last night and today. We have used Beneful before with no adverse reactions. So, either they changed ingredients or an ingredient was contaminated.

I have been feeding Beneful Healthy weight Formula to my two dogs for 6+ years now and never had a problem. I chose this product because of the reviews and the trusted (?) company Purina. Recently, my Basenji Sadie started vomiting. She stopped eating almost entirely. (This girl loved to eat, would fall on her food and try to steal what she could from our other dog, Skip a Chow mix). She started drinking and urinating excessively (for her) and had couple of accidents in the house. She's ten now and hasn't since she was house broken. This went on for two weeks or so. I took her to the vet as this was something that was not getting better and the weight loss had become quite evident. After approximately $800 of tests, it was determined that she had liver failure. All of her enzymes were excessively high; one so high it could not be measured. I was told she may not make it. We would put her on some meds to improve liver function and hope for the best.
After a week of treatment, I stumbled quite by accident a feed from the Bat Conservation Society on my Facebook an article about Beneful and problems with dogs becoming ill with some dying. I called Purina this morning to let them know of my experience. I was given the company line by a very polite young man just trying to do his job based on the script in front of him. I gave them my vet's contact information and asked when they may be contacting him. I was told they may not, that they took the information for just in case. I advised them that under the given circumstances that it would be to their benefit to be concerned enough to make contact as part of their investigation into the complaint.
They offered to test the food I had for quality control but not for chemistry. I told them it may not be the same bag of food that did it, as we go through two or more a month and that a negative test would mean nothing for me but would be willing to send a sample as part of their investigation. I was told that they do that test for the customer and that if it would be meaningless to me that they wouldn't send it. I told him that I would be more than happy to send a sample for them if they wanted to use it as part of their investigation as maybe the results would be meaningful to them. He originally said no, but then thought better of it and decided to ask for a sample anyway.
I was told I could call them in 6-8 weeks to get the results. I then told him that under the circumstances, I better receive a call with the results if not a mailed copy of them. All in all, I got a very non-committal company line response to my inquiry. I do feel that I made my position quite clear and if the recording that they say may be used for quality control was actually done, and I hope it was, any listener would be clear as to my concerns too. They did talk about compensation after I told them of the expenses already incurred and the potential for lifetime of meds if Sadie survives this. I told him it was way too early to be thinking about that, but yes, certainly some compensation would be expected. If you have a problem, by all means call. Numbers are on our side but the numbers only exist if they know about it. Hope this was helpful.

In September 2012, our 7-year-old Lab Bella, who has been eating Beneful all her life, suddenly became lethargic, complacent and just not herself. She was walking into walls, falling down steps and would bury her nose in your leg. She didn't want to eat and drank excessively and would miss the water bowl like she couldn't see it. Just a few days after noticing the change, we took her to her veterinarian. They ran all kinds of blood work and tests. They put her on antibiotics and steroids to try and save her because she was declining rapidly. We spent thousands of dollars and shed many tears only to find out that she had developed this liver disease, out of the blue, that was poisoning her brain. All the while we kept feeding her the Beneful.
Early one morning on October 21st, she went into a violent seizure. By the afternoon, she had 2 or 3 more and then she went into a seizure that didn't stop. That afternoon we had to put her down. That has to be the most horrible thing that I have ever had to experience. To watch her seizure and not be able to help her was absolutely devastating. I never want to experience anything like that again. As soon as I read all the complaints yesterday, we immediately went out and bought the best dog food we could find for our new dog; and we will never use another Purina product. It's a shame that there will continue to be victims of such a horrible ordeal when the makers refuse to accept responsibility and do what’s right and necessary to save our loved ones.

I just heard about the Purina Beneful food being the cause of seizures, kidney failure, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea and sometimes death. I was appalled to hear that this has been ongoing since October 2012. One of my dogs has lost weight, is vomiting and has diarrhea. She is going to the vet and I will be sure to let them know that I had been feeding her Beneful Playful Life. To think that the food I am feeding my beloved pet could have harmed her, is making me furious! I never buy food or treats from China because they have been tainted in the past. Who would have thought an American company would be so neglectful as to leave food that can harm our pets, on store shelves? Purina, shame on you! Recall this crap now!

About 6 months ago, I introduced Beneful healthy weight dry dog food to my 8-year-old terrier mix. At first, very few signs of problems. She started getting sick after just a few weeks. We took her to the vet and they said that it is most likely not the food. After 3 months went by, we noticed our dog's hair falling out in clumps. She started vomiting every other day and not acting normal. About a month later, we took her back to the vet and they did blood work. The blood work found that she was having kidney failure. The vet prescribed an antibiotic and IV fluids. She then became better for about a week, then suddenly became ill again. Symptoms included vomiting, shaking, poor appetite, excessive water intake, lethargic and hair falling out. A few day later and $1,100.00, we decided to put our amazing loving dog to sleep. If you are feeding your dog Beneful products, beware!

All four of our dogs have had issues with vomiting and loose stools (dark stools, almost black) and darker urine. I thought our Pomchi had a seizure and stopped breathing one night. My dad and I switched to Beneful 5 months ago. My dad mentioned that his dog wouldn't eat a few times in the morning, which had never happened to him. He is very health conscious with his dogs. I also found vomit once in the backyard of his house. Keep in mind, we just saw the story on MSN and it all clicked. Now to the more serious issue. My dog is eating the Beneful as well - the prepackaged meals in the containers. My dog has puked up the Beneful 4 or 5 times. He has also puked bile a few times and eats grass every now and then. I just tacked this up to a few unlucky random events until I saw this article. This has never happened before with other dog foods. The days that he puked, he would not eat at all that day. 4 or 5 times is quite a bit in 6 months, but some dogs puke every now and then so I thought nothing of it.
Now I see this article and dogs dying. Granted it seems like it's only the dry food, but this is shocking. The way Beneful has handled this, denying everything and not seeming to care at all, I will not feed my dog this food anymore. Only time will tell if it was for sure the Beneful, but I'm not sure what else it could have been. Anyway, given the lack of response from this company, they can **. I'm done with Beneful. Better safe than sorry.

On December 30, 2012, my 8-year-old Labradoodle, Butters, stopped eating and vomited a couple times but otherwise was acting fairly normal. He had been eating Beneful for a few months, then switched to Diamond Chicken and Rice but the Diamond appeared to be causing itching so I had just changed him back to Beneful Healthy Weight since he was a few pounds overweight. We were planning to drive south the next day and, despite reservations about traveling when he wasn't feeling well, decided to make the trip. During the 14+ hour drive, he refused to eat but drank large amounts of water and urinated large amounts of dark urine as well.
I stopped every 1.5 hours so he could drink and urinate. He became very lethargic and it was obvious he did not feel well. The next day, January 1, 2013, I noticed he was looking jaundiced (yellow coloring), both his eyes and his ears. We took him immediately to the local animal emergency center where they found that his bilirubin was 1600 (should be 0.6) and liver enzymes were all very elevated. They immediately started him on IV fluids as well as an antibiotic and SAM-e and Denamarin to help support the liver. He continued to refuse to eat the next 2 days and the bilirubin continued to rise by almost 1000/day.
On Thursday morning, Jan. 3, a different vet at the emergency center advised me that I needed to take him somewhere that was able to do more advanced diagnostic testing since he was continually getting worse. She thought he presented similar to a dog with Leptospirosis but he had been vaccinated for that in Feb. 2012. I immediately made arrangements to drive back to Michigan to the animal clinic at MSU, another very long trip with a dog feeling very ill, with an IV, and having to stop every hour so he could urinate and drink. He was obsessed with drinking water at each stop and his urine continued to be very dark orange in color despite the IV and drinking.
Once at MSU, his bilirubin was 3600 and liver enzymes were very elevated, WBC was elevated despite the antibiotic. They started him on an additional antibiotic and medication to help clear the bilirubin/bile. On Friday, they gave little hope that he would survive unless he turned around with the change in medications. Thankfully, he showed an improvement in his bilirubin level on Saturday but still was refusing food. The next 3 days, we brought his favorite goodies to try to coax him to eat with very minor success. I was able to bring him home on Tuesday when his bilirubin came down to 17 and he was eating small amounts. I had to continue to give him supplemental fluids subcutaneously until he was eating and drinking well without vomiting.
We are now on day 17 of the ordeal and he is slowly progressing but is still not willing to eat canned dog food or dry kibble. A friend sent me an email about Beneful and the symptoms matched his so closely. MSU was never able to say definitively what the cause of his liver problems were other than Leptospirosis and cholangiohepatitis, but now I'm thinking his food may have been the cause. At this point, I don't know what food to introduce back into his diet since he is only wanting home cooked, and I don't trust either Diamond (due to itching and also had recalls in 2012) or Beneful. I am hoping that his liver will fully recover but the MSU and my local vet say it will take a while. I can't believe, with the number of incidents cited on this website, that Purina won't at least look into the complaints. I plan to request that from both Purina and the FDA.

After being forwarded an article regarding this brand food and researching the complaints regarding Purina Beneful, I have strong reason to believe my dog passed away as result of this toxic food. My dog experienced several symptoms prior to her death, which seem very closely matched up with reported symptoms. I do not understand how a company can be so irresponsible to not place a recall on its food after so many consumer complaints. My dog was always a healthy and vibrant dog. I lost my best friend and I thought I was feeding him something that was good for him. Shame on Purina for putting something the equivalent to antifreeze in the food. Now I can cry my eyes out over the loss of my little friend Frankie. All that's left of him is a little box of his ashes. Purina is to blame. Please do something about this, for me and Frankie.

I bought Beneful Original on January 3rd, opened and fed my dog this food on January 9th and 10th. On the 11th, she experienced severe diarrhea and vomiting for two days and would not take water. Fortunately, I took her off the food after the second day and put her on very small portions of rice and chicken. Symptoms remained for another day and a half but now are hopefully under control. This bag is going back to the store for a full refund. Since I have purchased this product before with no adverse issues, I am wondering what has changed. No more Beneful for my pup.

I have fed Beneful to our 7-year-old Pekingese for several years and didn't have a problem. However, for about the last 4-5 weeks, he has been having lots of accidents in the house and drinking lots of water. I find myself refilling his water bowl frequently, but hadn't thought much about it until I read about the recent problems experienced by dog owners and Beneful. He has also thrown up. Since he is not an outdoor dog and is on a leash during his potty times, I wasn't worried that he had gotten into something bad. I just assumed it wasn't something serious. Now I am going to have him checked out asap.

My 2-year old German Shepherd crossbred with Japanese Akita recently passed after switching to Beneful. We had to have her put down due to a serious none savable case of bloat. She was a very healthy dog till we switched to Beneful. It was not expensive and she liked it. After a few months, she became very ill, gray oily stools, gassy and runny stool. Vomiting started the day we put her down. After a trip to the vet, we found out she wasn't digesting food properly so we switched food to an expensive duck blend. The runny stools had stopped but sadly we were too late with the food switch and she had gotten bloated. We went to the vet asap, but the vet had said this was a rare case and had killed 75% of her intestines already in a matter of 10 minutes. My beautiful healthy baby girl had to be put down. There was only a 5% chance of survival during surgery and a 15% recovery chance afterwards. After reading all these other statements I now wonder if this food is what caused my dog to become deathly ill. If so, I too am interested in suing. This is terrible for all these wonderful pets to be killed by something meant to help them survive.

After Christmas, my beautiful healthy 5-year-old Golden Labrador fell sick. He began by breaking into shivers for about a week and then around New Year's day, he got really sick and started to go into kidney failure. I had to put him to sleep on January 4th, and the vet said the blood work, and from his experience, it looked like antifreeze poisoning. Only my dog was a very loving and loyal inside dog. I chose to feed him the top of the line most expensive dog food for his health, and his stomach always came before mine if I was broke and needing. This gives me some closure but I'm sick and disgusted. Do not feed your dogs this food or stop feeding them this food immediately.

I too have had the same exact problem with Beneful dog food. I have called the customer service line and got the same ** that others have gotten. It is not Beneful; it must be something else. My issue started back on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I have a 7lb Chihuahua and a 85lb Doberman. On that Wednesday at 9:00AM, my chi started having a violent seizure. It lasted a good 5 minutes. I did not freak out immediately because I am in the health field and sometimes, dogs get into things and so on. Well at 1:00PM, bam! Another even more violent seizure that lasted about 7 minutes this time. This time, we jumped in the car with him and took him to the vet. Since it was the day before the holiday, the vet clinic was closing but I was able to talk to the doctor on the phone. He advised me on what to do. OK, I gave him 2mg of Valium and back home we went.
At 7:00PM, bam! This time the seizure was close to 10 minutes long and he stopped breathing, so mouth to snout it was. I thankfully got him breathing again and to the emergency vet clinic. They had to give him 5mg of Valium before he would finally stop seizing. He stayed overnight for fluid therapy and more Valium, but thankfully no more seizures that day. After all the tests came back, my chihuahua's lab results for liver and kidney functions/enzymes were through the roof. My other dog (doberman), I noticed was eating grass outside and had diarrhea also - but thankfully, no seizures. I changed their food immediately and put them both on Iams puppy food. The vet said that the Iams puppy is the same or better than most Rx dog foods.
I had been feeding them the Beneful. Obviously, we all have the same exact thing going on with all of our dogs and Purina/Beneful still says it is not their food. I called up to the customer service line and the same crap others have been told I was told. Nope, it can't be their food. I thankfully did not lose my furry children. But now my chihuahua is on medications for his liver and kidneys, along with a seizure medicine. Get your dogs off Beneful! I am so sorry to those of you who have lost your pets. It is horrible they refuse to accept that their dog food is doing this, while we the public has trusted Purina/Beneful. Now I have a great $2,500.00 vet bill for the emergency clinic and all the testing.
I will never buy Purina again. I will continue to post on all the sites telling others about this. I will continue to post on Purina and Beneful's site until something gets done. None of this had to happen.

We fed her from the bag exclusively. On January 2nd, she became lethargic. By the time she saw the vet on Jan 3rd, she was having difficulty breathing. She died at the doctor's office. The vet said it was an environmental cause but was very vague as to how a completely healthy young dog could decline so rapidly. I can only attribute this strange occurrence to having ingested Beneful Dog Food.

My dog is 2 years old and has been on Beneful (bag food, chicken and rice, lamb and rice, beef, etc). The symptoms I noticed with him were vomiting; white foaming around the mouth; loose and at times, extremely smelly stools. Sometimes the vomiting is just a foamy white substance. I have stains on a dark brown carpet from his vomiting that a commercial carpet cleaner has been unable to remove. I attributed it to oh maybe he ate something outside while being walked, or maybe the food in the bag was old and expired. I also recalled a couple of months ago, I came across a patch on his back where the hair was gone and looks as if it had been removed via wax. My dog has regular doctor visits and yesterday, he had blood work done. I have called his vet to check specifically for the condition of his liver. I am sad for everyone who have lost their pets, but extremely grateful to hopefully have found this information in time to save mines. Purina products are gone from this house.

We started using Beneful in the summer of 2012 after using Nutro from October 2011 (when we got the dog) through 06/2012. After a month or so on Beneful, my 1 year old black lab started having grand mal seizures lasting 1-3 minutes, and coming about every 12-17 days. We consulted with the vet who told us that we could start on Phenobarb and start a battery of tests. We opted not to start the meds and instead looked for toxins in the environment. Was he getting into something? Was he allergic to something? It was just so odd that these appeared out of nowhere and without warning.
Each episode of seizures became progressively worse. We didn't think of the food at first. (This was a rescued dog, so we had no idea about his background.) In November, I decided to switch Bacon back to Nutro. His last seizure was 11/12/2012. Since he's been back on Nutro, there were no seizures. The only change we made was to eliminate Beneful from his diet. Now, I tell everyone I know about our experiences with Beneful.

I lost my 5-year old, 9 pound, toy fox terrier, 6 years ago from pancreatitis. It was during the time of the 'dog food scare' when several products were being removed from the shelves. My doggies were eating the dry Beneful at that time, which was not on the list of pet foods to be concerned about (I double checked!). Nicky was always healthy and active, and as a responsible dog owner, I was up-to-date on all of his vaccines. But he came down sick very quickly, lethargic, not eating or drinking, and I thought perhaps he just had a flu bug if there is such a thing for doggies. I took him to our vet on the second day of having the symptoms since he was not improving, having no idea how serious his illness was. That morning, he went into a coma and passed. I had our vet confirm her suspicions via an autopsy and it was, in fact, his pancreas.
'Nicky' was my boy; I was completely devastated. How could this happen? I cried and cried and to this day, I miss my little guy. Coincidence? Maybe, but after hearing about this, I can assure you I will never buy Beneful products again. I still have toy fox terriers and I keep them mostly on the Nutro Natural moist food products from Soldan’s. When I can, I make my own dog food for them (mixture of beef or chicken, rice and vegetables) although I have always heard 'people' food is not good for our pet's diets, thinking there must be something special in actual dog food (e.g. vitamins, etc.) that they need - but poisons? What are we supposed to do to keep our furry family members safe and save us from the worry?

We have been trying to figure out what is causing the vomiting which happens after she eats her food and continues as just bile. I am now reading that this problem is not just isolated to my pet but is widespread for pets consuming Beneful products. In addition, I have noted that Beneful has been associated with pet illness due to mold in 2007. I am extremely angry that you, as a company, have taken no action to notify pet owners of the widespread complaints or to reasonably address this matter. I will no longer be purchasing or feeding my pets any Purina products until this issue is addressed with more than lip service telling owners how great your product is. After rounds of tests, scans, medications, etc, it was determined that she now has pancreatitis. My mom is doing everything she can to get her healthy again but the reality is, she'll never be the way she was again. Too much damage has been done to her little body and my mother is heartbroken. Scrappi went from a 10lb, healthy, rambunctious dog to a 4lb dog that does as little as possible now. Also, according to the vet, this is not the first case she has had come into her office. I just lost my 9 year rottie boxer mix last week. She was a perfectly happy and healthy girl until 2 days before Christmas. She has been eating Beneful Healthy Radiance for the past two years. On December 23, we opened a new bag of Beneful Healthy Radiance and fed it to her and her brother. Within 2 days, she was acting very strange. She wouldn't eat, drank water like there was no tomorrow and threw up at least 7 times a day. It was filled with mucus and bile. I tried feeding her rice and beef and she wouldn't even eat that. All she would do was lay around and look sad. It was heart breaking. On the third day, she started with a stuffy nose and felt warm to touch.
I called my vet who told me that she probably had a cold and to try giving her some steam around her nose. At this point she had started to look very thin. The first time I steamed her nose, a bunch of dried up blood came out. I was very concerned. I tried feeding her some rice and beef and she just turned her nose to it. I assumed that like humans, when you have a cold sometimes your stomach gets upset and you don't want to eat. That same night, I took her outside to go to the bathroom and she had bloody diarrhea. Something was just not right and I began to wonder what was going on. I just kept on trying to get her to eat and kept her comfortable, hoping she would bounce back but over the weekend, she went downhill fast.
I called the vet again on Monday and she came out, took one look at her and told me that she was in total liver failure and there was nothing we could do, she was going to die within the next couple of days. Can I tell you how shocking that was? I was so confused and couldn't really wrap my head around what she was saying. This dog was perfectly healthy less than 2 weeks prior, playing with her brother and both my kids. That night, we all laid with her and said our goodbyes. We wanted her to pass on her own terms. She lasted two more days and I finally had the vet come over and put her down.
I have been beating myself up for the past week wondering what I did wrong and how could this happen. How could I have not known? Then today on Facebook, a friend of mine put up a post with this link about Beneful. I read it and cried right at my desk at work. I fed her poison without even knowing it but Purina knew and did nothing to warn its consumers. Shame on them. I still have Lacey's brother who has been suffering from ear infections and hives and skin rashes for sometime now and after reading everyone's post, I now have answers to my questions - Beneful killed my beautiful Lacey.
On my way home today, I stopped at Pet Smart and bought an all natural dog food for Lacey's brother, hoping he will not suffer the same fate as his sister. I hold Purina personally responsible for the loss of my dog and the heartbreak my family has been going through for the last 3 weeks. Please, everyone get the word out that Purina products are killing their animals and Purina is denying it. I am ready to go to the local news station and have them do a story about this and I am having a lab test the food I have left for toxins. I am also going to talk to a lawyer about a class action lawsuit. It is not about the money; it is about the animals. No animals should die because of the food they eat. Let's stand here as a united front and get this food off the market. Purina Karma, we'll come and get you, I can promise you this.

The day after she began eating from the new bag, she exhibited excessive thirst and she did not want to walk as far as usual. Within 3 days, she was having trouble breathing and did not want to walk at all. A visit to the vet and blood work showed a lung infection, but definitely something seriously wrong with her liver. The vet wanted to get the infection under control before perusing and treating any liver issue. My dog died the next day and the vet was completely at a loss as to why she died. I had 4 Doxies, 3 senior Minis and 1 two-year-old Tweenie. I'd been feeding the 3 seniors Purina One Vibrant Maturity 7+ Senior Formula and the younger one Beneful Playful Life. One of my little ones developed sudden kidney failure about 2 months ago. One day she didn't finish her food; next day she wouldn't eat it. I didn't worry too much because sometimes dogs don't eat. (I'm a long-time dog mom.) But then she began vomiting. Again, I didn't worry a lot because sometimes dogs vomit. I didn't offer Purina One again; rather I tried some baby rice cereal. She only ate a little. I waited a few hours then tried a small bit of very high-end wet food, and she still wouldn't eat. And she vomited again, twice. Then I found her hiding behind a pillow on the bed, which she had urinated all over, something she had never done before. In fact, the only time any of my dogs have had accidents on the bed is when they get very old and senile. My little Pie was only 9 years old. My dogs have a doggie door so they can go out whenever they want, plus I always have a pad on the floor near the door because doxies can be very fussy about going out in the rain or snow.
I immediately took her to the ER vet clinic because it was a Sunday evening. They diagnosed her with kidney failure, tried for more than 48 hours to save her and I finally had to have her put to sleep. I was absolutely devastated because she'd been totally healthy. It was particularly awful because this clinic had previously been an independent clinic owned and run by extremely loving, caring people. Since the last time I was there, it had been taken over by a huge conglomerate and I was unable to be in the clinic with her, spend the night with her or see any of what they were doing for her. They had restricted visiting hours during which they would take her off the IV and bring her to me in an examination room to hold. I could tell she wasn't being taken care of the way my other dogs always had been in the ER clinic.
No one at the clinic ever asked me what type of food she'd been eating although I did detail her recent eating/not eating history for them. I took some homemade treats to the clinic to try to tempt her to eat, but she wouldn't eat for me or the clinic staff. It just about killed me to have to leave her there, all alone for so long. No one ever offered me any explanation for her sudden kidney failure either. Now that I'm learning about all the deaths from Beneful, I'm wondering if Purina One could be responsible for the recent death of my precious little girl. I'm going to immediately stop feeding Beneful to my two-year-old and stop feeding Purina One to my older little ones.

I had not heard of any issues with Beneful dog food until I saw a friend's post on Facebook tonight. I immediately read the short article and am sure that Purina Beneful killed my dog just two months ago. Wylie was a 110 pound wolf/shepherd/malamute mix that I rescued in Alabama 2 years ago. He and my Jack Russell terrier had been getting fed Purina Little Bites most of the time and Beneful occasionally when my local grocery store was out of the Little Bites. A few days before Thanksgiving, we opened a new bag of Beneful and began feeding it to both dogs. They both acted normally until Wylie suddenly fell ill on Thanksgiving day. He was fine when I played with him at 10:30 in the morning. But when he came in from playing outside at around noon, I knew he wouldn't make it much longer.
He stumbled up the stairs, barely able to walk to the back door. His mouth was full of dirt with his tongue hanging out of it; barely breathing; eyes completely glazed over. He collapsed as soon as he walked inside of the house and we immediately rushed him to the emergency vet 10 minutes away. He had massive amounts of of bloody diarrhea and could not stand up at all. When we got him to the vet, they told us that the toxin levels in his blood stream were so high that they had to dilute the blood sample and retest it to even get a reading. He was in complete liver failure less than two hours after showing any signs of illness and died of a heart attack an hour later.
We scoured our yard and house looking for anything that he could have gotten into, but found nothing. This has at least brought me a little bit of closure, knowing what the probable cause of his death actually was. I was and still am devastated, but I am just glad that my Jack Russell did not suffer the same illness. It is safe to say that I will never be purchasing a Purina brand product ever again.

Then in October 2012, he started vomiting more consistently and was not eating his food - which for a lab is definitely not normal. I brought him to the vet, and the only thing they noticed wrong was his liver values were sky high. We put on bland diet, Pepcid, liver enzymes, antibiotics, etc. A few days later, he was so week and dehydrated, we brought him back to the vet. No one had a clue; but since he was an older dog, they assumed that maybe that was what was going on.
He was back to the animal hospital after the antiemetic wore off. He started vomiting more and still refused to eat. Two days in the hospital, he had ultrasounds, blood work, x-rays, etc. He looked like he was taking a turn for the better. But after all kinds of workups and a very large vet bill, we got the bad news that his liver values were not going down; and he took a turn for the worst, and I had to put him down. I didn't know about issues with Beneful until I just read all the complaints. It definitely sounds like the same exact symptoms as many other of these complaints.
I think someone needs to bring this to Purina, and they really should look into it. I submitted to their contact us website and got “Our food is safe and we have high standards that our foods go through.” Well, if there are these many dogs having an issue, something needs to be done. Animals can't tell you like humans exactly what’s wrong. There were huge pet food recalls a few years ago. There are human food recalls all the time and even human medicine recalls. Something needs to be done! I will make sure I spread the word to anyone else feeding their dogs this food.

I fed my four-pound Chihuahua Beneful, and she got pancreatitis and almost died. She had to be admitted into the ER vet. She had not eaten anything except her dog food so this has to be a factor in her sickness.

My dogs were itching, getting bare patches, licking paws, etc. so I decided to take them off of Purina One Lamb and Rice - hoping that Beneful was a good second choice. I started seeing vomit spots in my carpet after I switched but didn't put two and two together. I couldn't figure out which dog was sick. By the time I found out it was my little baby, it was too late. He had begun to dehydrate, wouldn't eat, and finally, we caught him vomiting. Then I knew for sure it was him. Long story short, he died three days later of pancreatitis, kidney failure and renal failure. I was also told that his bowels were full of bad bacteria. I changed their food around the second week of December to Beneful and he died three weeks later.
My other dogs are large breeds and they were very gassy but it didn't seem to affect them. They will be going to the vet for checkup soon though. I miss my little boy so very bad and my heart is crushed. All arrows point to the switch in food. I blame myself for changing their food and not being aware of who was sick. I am now in the process of changing their food to something way better than any junk Purina puts in a bag and calls dog food! Shame on you for not caring and letting our poor animals get sick - and some, "like mine," lose their lives. A life that mattered so much to me and my family. If you see a vomit but have more than one dog, take them all to the vet.
If I had known, I could have thrown out the "death food in a bag" much sooner and saved my sheltie's life! He's gone now and all I have left is tears. He was precious. Thanks a lot, Purina. Start by removing Beneful off the market. At least act like you care. Folks, please pay attention. Let these complaints put you on guard to what could happen. My dog was about eight years old and healthy. I wish he was sitting here on my lap right now.

One night, my dog began drinking water excessively. I noticed in the morning that his stomach was bloated, round and hard like a basketball. He was hunched over when I got him to walk, which he didn't want to do. He was shaking and clearly in pain. The vet had me watch him, massage his stomach, give him Mylicon Drops every half hour, and if there was even the slightest negative change, to rush him to ER immediately because bloat can be fatal to dogs. He came out of it and I continued to feed a grain-free wet food diet with pumpkin in very small multiple portions for a few days, until the bloating went down and he was acting more normally. He still drank far more than he used to though.
After about one month of his acting normal (except for the drinking), I thought I'd wean him back onto the dry food. I put just a tablespoon of the Beneful kibble into his wet food. Within a few hours, he was bloating back up again and drank nearly a bucket full of water. I began the same treatment as before. This time I researched the food because that was the only change. I found this site. The posting of the golden retriever was exactly the same as what I was experiencing.
I began reading the other posts. I'm not sure why no one has contacted the ASPCA to investigate. It sounds like people have contacted the FDA and Beneful/Purina with no results. One woman posted to the Beneful Facebook page and they sent her $40 in coupons. I posted to the Beneful Facebook and my posting was promptly deleted with no response. This says a lot. I looked on the FDA recall list site. There were numerous pet foods listed but absolutely no mention of Purina or Beneful.
My dog continued to drink excessively. Though he seemed to feel better than he was, he isn't his normal self. If that food had caused permanent damage, Purina was responsible. Since it's clear that they are hiding and not saying anything, they need to come out of the shadows and man up. If not, then they need to be held responsible for these actions.
There were too many deaths listed on this site for us all to sit back and do nothing. We have to tell more people, so more beloved pets don't die. Get on Twitter, Facebook, etc. and tell your friends to tell their friends, so we can spread the word and no more pets have to die before someone recalls this product. I don't understand why Purina hasn't stepped up and said or done something. No statement has been made that they are researching what's going on, which products are affected and why or what to do about it.
I've kept the bag of food for testing. Please, if we can save some lives, let's get the word out so that not one more pet owner has to go through this.

My dog was becoming picky with his food. He is a 5-year-old lab and on the heavier side. We started feeding him Beneful Healthy Weight to cut back. We noticed scabs on his belly (our vet said heat scabs, so we said OK), and then he started vomiting more often. He also had no energy to go outside and didn’t seem all around happy. One day I read a bad review about Beneful, and we switched him to Merrick Grain Free food because we thought he was allergic to the corn or grains. Well, needless to say, now he’s scab free and hasn’t vomited in months. He’s more energetic and seems all around happy.

My 5-month-old puppy was eating Beneful puppy food. I knew it wasn't the healthiest choices. I had bought Eukanuba and my puppy wouldn't eat it. If he did eat it, he would not finish his food. I bought the Beneful without having any experience with it. My puppy liked it; he would finish his bowl. Halfway through the second bag, he then began to not finish that food. One morning he didn't wake up. I went to his cage and he was unresponsive. I took him to the vet immediately. His blood sugar was 21. He was in liver failure. He died the next day. We will never know what caused the liver failure, but just reading this article makes me concerned.

I purchased a new bag of Beneful healthy weight food. On the second day of feeding from that bag, he vomited after his morning feeding. I'm so glad I was at home all day as I then could see he wasn't very energetic after that. Then all he wanted to do was drink water (wouldn't want to dehydrate). By very early the next morning, I called an emergency number for a vet as he was very weak after drinking and bringing the water back up on an off. Before they could meet us there to see him, he passed. That was 24 hours from the time he showed any sign of not feeling well. I called Purina so that it was on record. I thought possibly it could have been a batch of food that should be recalled. I was told nothing has changed with the formula. At that point, I just wanted to prevent someone else going through that. This occurred in October 2012. A friend who volunteers at an animal shelter led me to this link.

After stumbling across an article on a friend's Facebook page, I am positive that Purina Beneful is what killed my dogs. They had been eating it for almost a week when they both died. Thankfully, I have switched my current dogs' food brand and they seem to be fine but I am very sad to say I will never get the image out of my head of my dogs' deaths. The other two did not eat as much and were not as ill and bounced back more quickly. I was horrified and nearly went crazy throwing out thousands of dollars in clothes. I took everything out of the closet, etc; you get the picture. Pesticide guy was sure that it had originated in the pantry but I was sure I hadn't seen anything in there.
Couple of weeks later walking down pet island and what do you know, a zillion of those nasty little critters everywhere all over the pet food aisle. Yup, Purina. Now I have been a big user of Purina for our dogs for years but we are certain the moths were coming from the dog food. Our little Willy vomits every other week at least once a week. My husband and I would like to express our condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers to those that are suffering. We lost our "little man," Cruise this morning, diagnosed with liver failure. We always fed him Science Diet small bites, and lately because of dental issues, we were adding water to soften the nuggets. I had made a choice on December 17th to change to a softer food that still had substance to help prevent tartar buildup; I chose Beneful. He was eating the Beneful up until December 24th, when he started vomiting and had very loose bowels. We immediately admitted him into the Animal Emergency Center with a temperature of 104.
They administered IV fluids, the x-rays showed an enlarged liver and gallbladder, and the pancreas was fine. The blood results showed the liver enzymes at 3 times the normal level. On December 26th, his temperature returned to normal, he was transferred to The Animal Hospital, they continued fluids, and ran a barium test. On December 27th, the vet was concerned that he may have a mass blocking the intestines; he opted for exploratory surgery. No mass was found, the liver and gallbladder were enlarged, but the color looked good. They sent away for a biopsy of the liver. They were feeding him with a syringe, but nothing was staying down. My husband and I would go everyday to try and hand feed him chicken and rice, but to no avail.
This morning December 30th, we received a call that the biopsy results showed liver failure and that Cruise was unconscious. It was time to say our goodbyes. As we were getting our coats on, the vet called again to say that Cruise had passed. We want to thank everyone for submitting these reviews. I was not aware that I would be killing my pet when I purchased that bag on Dec. 17th. We became aware of this site when doing a random search for "liver problems associated with Beneful." If Purina has chosen to turn a blind eye to this, and the FDA does not issue a recall, then we have a responsibility to get the word out before another innocent animal has to endure what our best friends have endured.
My husband has sent this link to everyone in our address book, we have printed all the reviews and gave copies to the vet. We are contacting family members and friends, warning them that Beneful is not on the FDA recall list, but showing them your reviews. Is there any other suggestion that we can do for the sake of our loved ones?

Daisy, an 8-year old mutt, woke up on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 6:00AM. She ate a full bowl of Beneful and went straight into my room, and vomited. She continued to vomit all day until there was nothing left but bile. She didn't eat much for the next week. Wednesday, Nov. 14, she vomited all day (4-5 times). Empty tummy and bile. We tried Science Diet, but she still didn't eat for a week. We took her to the vet on Wednesday, Nov. 21. She had fever, high WBC, high neutrophils (bacterial) and high alkaline phos (possibly liver). We went home with antibiotic, a prescription stomach med and a $227 bill. Saturday, Nov. 24, she was deathly ill. We could feel her raging fever and she was lethargic. She wouldn't even drink water from her bowl. We drizzled water into her mouth with a pipette and let her lick a wet wash cloth. I removed her collar, stopped giving meds and told the kids to love on her today. She was going fast.
Sunday, Nov. 25th, she drank water from her bowl. Still not eating (Beneful or Science Diet). Wednesday, Nov. 28, we went back to the vet. After x-rays and more blood work (spec canine specific lipase, cpl), she's diagnosed with pancreatitis. We went home with another prescription stomach med, generic stomach antacid and another bill of $187. Vet recommended to start prescription canned dog food for dogs with GI problems. Oh and by the way, her teeth and gums look horrid. Her last teeth cleaning a year ago was over $200 with 5 extractions. We picked up a pack of chicken on the way home and she's doing beautifully on plain chicken and white rice since.
The poor baby was starving, but she would rather die a long, slow death of starvation than eat one more bite of kibble. That won't be nutritionally adequate in the long run, but no more store bought kibbles with accompanying prescriptions for my family. We're looking into home cooked and raw, meaty bones/BARF diet. I have been feeding my dog, a 4-year old, 10 lb. Havanese, Purina Beneful dog food for over the past year. I gave her the original variety initially, and then switched her to Healthy Fiesta. Approximately, three weeks ago, I purchased another bag of Healthy Fiesta Beneful dog food from Target (11160 Veirs Mill Road Wheaton, MD 20902); 10 lb bag, best by: Aug 2013, Lot #: 224010850246L09; QC: 017800141956. I began noticing changes in my dog’s behavior after opening the new bag and feeding it to her. During the course of the week she was on the new bag of dog food, she was listless, barely eating her food, and vomited twice on Friday, November 16th, 2012.
On Monday, November 19, 2012, her stomach was very upset and she refused to eat her dog food and attempted to eat grass when she was outside to induce vomiting. Her skin felt extremely hot to the touch and she was lethargic. On Tuesday, November 20th, I arrived home to find diarrhea in the bathroom and one of her eyes swollen shut. I rushed her to the emergency medical clinic where blood work was done. Her screens came back ok, but she was dehydrated and had to receive fluids and antibiotics. Unfortunately, the vet was unable to find a cause for the eye swelling but provided instructions on how to treat the symptoms.
At my follow-up vet appointment, after describing the symptoms above and my dog’s changes in behavior, my veterinarian believed that there was a direct relationship between Purina’s Beneful dog food and my pet’s onset of health problems. Additionally, the symptoms that he originally believed to be as a reaction to seasonal allergies, was a result of this dog food. He notated the name of the dog food, lot number, and the place of purchase for future reference for his other patients.
Fortunately, due to my quick response in seeking medical attention, after receiving medication and being on a bland diet for approximately 6 days, my dog is in recovery and seems to be stable. In the past week, two of my friends who also fed their dogs Beneful have had to rush their dogs to the emergency vet (one had a seizure and the other couldn't stop vomiting, also they live on completely different sides of the country).
This site is what actually made me rush to the emergency vet myself and seek medical care (and could single-handedly be responsible for why she is still alive). I strongly urge everyone here to file a formal complaint with the FDA. Often, this is the only way a recall can happen if the company refuses to voluntarily recall its products. If enough consumers tell their stories, the FDA generally will launch an investigation. I have also contacted Purina directly, but so far, I've dealt with people reading scripts and telling me "how sorry they are this happened". I pray for everyone who has lost a pet due to this company's negligence.

November 30, 2012, our Siberian Husky, who is normally so playful, suddenly showed signs of lethargy on November 21, 2012. She has been on Beneful Dry Dog Food for a few months now. In early November, she had a bald spot on her leg and it was red. We took her to the vet, and it was treated it with a topical ointment but no real explanation. Then we started to notice that the one step into the house was suddenly a slight problem, and she started to slip while even walking on level floors every now and then. I attributed it to her always rushing around, hopping and bouncing her body around, since she is normally very active. Then she started to get mopey, and I thought maybe she had a stomach virus because she stopped eating and had diarrhea and threw up some bile. She would eat a bit and throw it up, and then she started drinking water profusely. She refused to eat anything, even if it was hand-fed to her. I couldn't get her to eat a scrambled egg, a piece of American cheese...nothing.
Overnight on the 26th, she had many accidents all over the house. This is so unlike her. That morning, she was so lethargic. I thought maybe she was dehydrated. I contacted her vet, and he told me to rush her to a specific animal hospital. Thank God, we did, because when we got her there, she had a fever of 104.5, too high for a dog. She was immediately placed on an IV for hydration, because she isn't eating or drinking water. They did a biopsy under ultrasound and a series of blood tests. Today, they had to put a food tube in her through her nose. They asked us to come in and try to get her to eat. We brought all her "favorite" table food treats, and she snubbed us when we offered her food. My daughter laid on the floor in the hospital next to her, and the dog just seemed to moan and tried to get closer to her. Her liver count is still in the 1800 area, when it should be in the 115 area. They can't give her meds for her liver till she is able to eat and keep food in her. We are hoping that the tube will help in this area, so we can strengthen her up.
I can't emphasize enough. Stop using Purina Beneful. They have been having dog food recalls for years. Unfortunately, I never thought to look it up, thinking it was Purina, why should I check it out. They have had this problem since at least 2006! And if your pet(s) are showing any unusual signs and/or even losing spots of hair, get to the vet immediately and let them know what you are feeding your pet. The key is the first 3 ingredients on the bag are most important!

The first time she ate it, she devoured it but three days later, she started vomiting with blood in her stool and diarrhea. She was treated for inflamed bowels and GI issues and we have been dealing with it ever since, vacillating between boiled chicken and rice and Rx dog food.
Today, I took her to the vet because she is still struggling, but has lost an alarming amount of weight as she is now 4.9 pounds with both her rib cage and spine protruding because her intestines are no longer absorbing nutrients. The worst part is that she still has her same lively spirit but she's wasting away. All the while, he had a great appetite, never refused his food. A few months later, he started having episodes where he would lose control of his hind legs. I thought maybe he was fetching things to hard.
He would fetch a frisbee for 24 hours straight, if I'd let him, and he goes all out. Finally, I bought a fresh bag of Beneful in July of this year and the bag was full of maggots and moths, only I didn't realize it until after the first feeding. I thought it was just a bad batch. She was a healthy 8-year-old dachshund. We took her to the vet, and they told us to give her pedicile. We thought we were buying good, safe food for her and have fed her Beneful for years. The last thing I would want to do is to say something about the food that wasn't true, and we cannot rule out the possibility it was not the food; but if this dog food is bad, people should be warned. I found this site by searching for a recall or possible health warnings. I wish I would have known Beneful may not have been a good choice before now.

Beneful dog food needs to be discontinued. My dog Brandy started vomiting her Beneful dog food and then wouldn't touch it for days. Finally, we started feeding her chicken and rice, which she ate at first, but then she wouldn't even eat that. We took her to the vet, and she was diagnosed with kidney failure. Vet said probable cause was toxin in dog food. **

About two or three months ago, we started our seven-year-old Lab on Beneful. At the end of one month or so, she had a violent seizure and another one about a month later. Our vet started her on phenobarbitals at a dose of two pills per day. After one week, we were told to reduce her pills to one in the morning and one half at night. On Oct. 9th, she had a slight seizure and another one on the 10th. On the afternoon of the 10th, she had two bad seizures so the vet kept her overnight. He ran an IV with charcoal through her that evening and again the next morning. He ran blood work and found an infection. She came home very happy and will be taking 2 tablets for seizures and an antibiotic.
My point is that she has all the symptoms other people complained about on Beneful. The seizures are often mentioned in complaints and I was curious as to what type of infection she had. When I brought her home from the vet on Thursday morning, I sat down to write this review and read that some dogs developed seizures and also developed bacterial infections. This is crazy. We would have never thought of her food being the cause of her seizures and infection until we found the complaints.
You must recall Beneful before it hurts or even kills other dogs. We cannot believe that this remains on the shelf. Please look carefully into this matter and consider all the similarities all the dogs that ate Beneful had. My dog was perfectly healthy until about one month ago. It is no fluke that all these dogs are getting sick. Please help to prevent other dogs from suffering. I’m sure there are many more people out there with sick dogs who don’t realize that Beneful is the reason their dog is sick.

We have a very healthy, happy lab named Belle. We started her on Beneful a little while ago. She never showed any signs of problems before. One day, two months ago, she had a full-fledged seizure. Then two months later, she had another one. She is now on meds for epilepsy. She just started her seizure meds a little over a week ago. Today is October 10th and my husband started researching reasons why dogs develop seizures. He found a website that had 190 complaints about Beneful. A lot of the complaints were about seizures. People in these complaints contacted Purina and they denied any problems with this food. You must recall Beneful before another healthy dog like mine gets sick. I hope we can reverse the effects this food has had on our dog because if she dies, it will be my fault for feeding her this food. Please recall this food.

Now, my Bassett won't eat her dog food, and she is throwing up blood - other two have refused to eat it too. Recall Beneful! Why isn't Purina doing anything about this? I decided to start converting my 18-month-old Old English sheepdog Henry from puppy food to adult dog food. I decided on Beneful and started mixing puppy food/Beneful 2-1 for the first and then began increasing the Beneful. I started this two weeks ago. On Sunday night, the diarrhea started. By Monday morning, it was all over my house. There’s vomiting and more diarrhea continued all morning. I went to the vet at 10:30 am and he wasn't sure of the cause. He told me not to use Beneful and to use a good quality meat-based dog food.
I fed Henry boiled chicken and rice the next few days and the diarrhea stopped on Tuesday morning. I started back on Puppy Chow, added some Beneful (was going to use the rest before switching) on Wednesday night and Thursday and now my dog is throwing up again and is having more diarrhea. I am so sorry that I did not read this review page earlier. I am throwing out the remaining Beneful. I am also done with Purina products.

I have four dogs of which I have always fed Purina products to. For the last 3 years they have been eating Fit-N-Trim. I thought I would try what I thought to be a better and more beneficial product to them and bought Beneful Healthy Weight. After about 2 weeks my younger dog who would normally eat anything started to refuse to eat. Then one of my older dogs started to vomit every night after eating - and not just once, but one night it was 7 times and this would continue until the next morning. Then one of my other dogs started to do the same. At that point, I decided to switch them back to Fit-N-Trim and all of a sudden the vomiting stopped and the other dog started eating again.
I saw all of the complaints on this site, so I sent Purina a message. And of course, they told me the same story how they had not had any complaints, which I can clearly see is a lie. Lucky for me I save the bag of food just in case something came of it. I gave them the information from the bag and they assured me that they would look into it, as well as sending me some coupons for free dog food. In the meantime, I need to replace almost every carpet in my house due to the red food coloring that is in the food. I think they need to pull this food off of the shelf before any more animals become sick or die. If anyone has any suggestions on where else to go with this, I would appreciate the feedback. I will be looking around myself for someone to possibly do some testing on the food.

We have two Jack Russels, both eight years old. We began feeding them Beneful Healthy Weight about two years ago and never really noticed any problems until this week. I had just purchased a new bag of the food from Wal-Mart. A few days ago, I came home from work to find seven (7!) piles of vomit in the living room. Only our Maggie had eaten her breakfast that morning. Charlie didn't touch his but it was still hard to say which was sick (if not both) because although Maggie was the only one that ate, it's unlikely of Charlie to not eat. Thinking maybe it was just a stomach bug, we took them off the food and fed them rice with chicken for two days, and they were both fine - no vomiting or diarrhea. So tonight, we decided to try to give them the Beneful again. They both ate it with their usual appetite, but sure enough, within no more than an hour of eating, Charlie was vomiting again. We decided to search online to see if there was possibly a recall, and came across all of these other complaints. A lot of them make mention of buying the food from Wal-Mart, and several within the month of September or late August, which is the same time I had purchased our new bag of food.
We called in to Purina and were told the same line. They had not received any other complaints about this, which is clearly ** based on all of the other reviewers comments and you can't believe everything you read on the internet. They did ask us if we had the # from the bag, but as we store our food in a container, we had already thrown the bag out with the trash. Our dogs are our babies, so we will not be taking any chances with this food. I'm just glad we came across all of these similar complaints in time, and have not been feeding them from this new bag for very long. And I just hope that there are no underlying, more serious problems from the past two years of feeding that we just haven't discovered yet. What we have left of the food (which is almost the entire 25 lbs) is going straight in the trash and I will be going to the store (not Wal-Mart) and buying another brand of dog food. It is just a shame.

He is now better but not after my fiancé and I spending our wedding fund of $6,000. He spent 4 nights in the hospital. As some of you have posted, I called Purina and got the same "Oh, I am sorry but we have heard nothing of this problem." I am going to my vet in the next few days to get their backing in filing a Federal Trade Commission complaint. I suggest everyone do the same. I am so sorry to all whose dogs did not make it. This is just awful. I am going to attempt to sue Purina to get my wedding fund back.
If there is anyone who would be able to provide some information or helpful hints, it would be greatly appreciated. If there is a dog lover/attorney with any advice, please post, as I am sure we could all use it. But again the only way to get this poison off the shelves is to make this problem known. When I told the customer service person at Purina about this site, her response was "The internet is not credible and should not be taken to heart." I almost fell out of my chair. I understand some things on the internet are lies, but this is not one of them as we all are having the same issue. So, I did the whole rice thing and she got better and then started adding the dog food back in and she got sick again. I went and bought another food, did the rice thing and started her on this new food and no problems whatsoever. I called Purina and discussed this and they had actually told me they didn't have any other complaints about this food. I bought Beneful and mixed it with his regular dry food. Immediately, he stopped eating after the first time of him eating it. I couldn’t understand. He ate six cups of his regular Nutro dog food and then went to zero. I kept forcing him or trying, but he was very sick and I didn’t know how sick till I ended up at a vet. He was dehydrated and had bacteria in his stomach and a high fever. I thought he slacked off eating because a female nearby was in heat. Then after a week of not wanting to barely drink and by the time I realized he was sick, I rushed him to the vet. I bought Beneful at a Family Dollar store here in Gila Bend, Arizona. We are in this area for my husband’s work. I never feed him anything before other than his Nutro, which I buy at PetSmart in Phoenix, Arizona. I was running low and went to the store here and this small town - Phoenix is 50 miles away.
That was four weeks ago when I bought that Beneful. Today, he is still not well and I had still been mixing Beneful with canned food and trying to get him to eat. He picked out the canned chunks. Then I hand-fed him the Beneful junk and he was throwing up - this while he is on three antibiotics from the vet. Today, I talked to a friend who told me Beneful had been making dogs very sick. Could this be why my dog is sick and still? I am a not forcing him to eat food that is contaminated. Oh, my God, I didn’t know I could have been killing him with this dog food. I am getting a new food today. I still have this junk, but it’s going in the trash soon.

My pug, Buster, is 11 years old. He has always been healthy. Because of a recent move and the inability to get his old food which had been produced regionally, I switched him to Beneful Healthy Weight. In just two short months, the change has been alarming. He went from being happy and energetic to lethargic, sleeping 95% of the time. He stopped seeking out affection, which he has always done. He had been right next to me for 11 years, to isolating himself onto his pillow. He started stumbling when he walked with his hind legs frequently giving way behind him, and he became unable to jump up onto our very low sofa. I attributed these things to age but worried about the rapidity in which they were happening. He has also been largely non-reactive and unable to meet my gaze most of the time.
Finally, this week, I took him off Beneful and started him on a diet of fresh cooked chicken and rice and in just four days, I have noted a remarkable shift. He is reactive and meeting my gaze. He is coming over for lovies again. The problem with his gait and collapsing hind quarters has disappeared. And this morning, he hopped up onto the sofa with an ease that frankly shocked me. He is still a bit lethargic but much easier to rouse than he has been for the past couple of months. I can't but believe it was the food making my beloved boy sick, as it is the only thing I have changed. I hope Purina does something, and soon.

I am a groomer. Whenever I have a dog-client with yeasty ears/eyes/paws and/or a dull thin coat and/or skin problems, I always ask the owner, "What do you feed your dog?" Nine times out of 10, the answer is Beneful. (The 10th time usually is Kibbles n Bits or Pedigree - both Purina products, I believe.) I tell the owners to please, please, please throw away the Beneful. Don't even donate it to rescues/shelters. I impress upon them the importance of buying new dog food on their way home and to feed not one more kibble of Beneful to their beloved pets.
It is terribly frustrating as a groomer when my human clients tell me that their vets say the type of dog food doesn't matter. It absolutely does. And I am shocked, dismayed, and disappointed that any vet would not know how detrimental Beneful (and other such dog foods) is, let alone that they recommend Science Diet - another crappy dog food. Well, I guess the vets make money off Science Diet by selling it in their offices. Jeez! Change vets! I also rescue dogs from local shelters. I can't tell you how many times I have rescued a dog that was slated to be killed due to skin/yeast problems. A better quality dog food and in three weeks the dogs are fine. Does Purina even understand that by selling these crappy dog foods they are killing dogs in shelters? It's maddening!

Chance developed not only vomiting, but also uncontrollable itching and almost totally liquid stools with lots of mucous. It took 5 days of keeping him on a bland diet of chicken broth and rice. It's easy on their tummies and soaks up the extra fluid in their system, 4 days after trashing the Beneful and going back to Taste of the Wild, Salmon recipe. It's grain free, awesome dog food! Anyway, 4 days later, the dogs were starting to act like themselves again, no itching, getting sick or diarrhea!

Annie is a Labrador-chow mixed breed, very strong in spirit and body despite being a three-legged amputee dog. She is an AKC CGC and a retired, certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, Inc. She is 15 years old, but she has been strong and doing great despite her advance age. Then we bought her a bag of Beneful and she got sick! Within a couple days of opening the bag and feeding it to her for breakfast and dinner, Annie was lethargic, weak, and shaky. She stopped eating, threw up bile and globs of mucous. She stopped eating, drinking, peeing, pooping. Her gums were pale and she was so weak she couldn't lift her head. We were making plans to have her put to sleep, certain that her kidneys or liver must have finally worn out and suddenly failed. Heartbroken doesn't begin to describe how we felt at this very sudden and shocking downturn in our beloved pet!
The good news is that after being off the Beneful for 48 hours, she rallied. Her gums pinked up, her eyes stopped looking lifeless and dull, and she began to show interest in water and then in home-cooked skinless chicken. Another couple of days and she was walking, eating, drinking, but still very weak. It has been over 10 days now since we threw the Beneful away, put her on home-prepared food instead and she is doing great! She is walking, playful, alert, interested, eating heartily, drinking and having normal kidney and bowel function. Although she is 15 years old, her coat is sleeker than it has been in a long time, she is more spry than she has been in a long time, and she is alive. No thanks to Beneful.
Because of Beneful, we nearly lost our beloved pet. We nearly ended her life by feeding her a product whose manufacturer we foolishly trusted. I am so angry and disgusted that Purina Beneful was poisoning my dog and that so many other dogs have suffered from eating this product. Shame on the company and shame on us for not screaming at the top of our lungs to tell the world how awful Beneful is for dogs - that is poisons them and kills them as surely as if you feed your dog anti-freeze or rat poison. I am so angry and I will never, ever, ever purchase a Purina product again nor will anyone in my family. I pray my friends do not either. I also mixed a wet food into their morning meal so the amount of dry food was cut back. Dinner is always just dry. I do recall once last year that Shadow would not eat much for a couple of days then for the next couple, she would eat like a pig. Two weeks ago she vomited a couple of times, had diarrhea with bleeding and was lethargic. I took her off dog food and gave her rice and hamburger, and no- salt chicken broth and she seemed to recover until I put her back on the Beneful. Then, she got constipated and lethargic again so we went to the vet and she suggested getting another food.
I called the number on the bag of Beneful and asked if there was a recall and was told they knew of no problem and promptly sent me a refund. So seven pounds of Beneful went in the garbage and my mortgage money went to the vet for x-ray and blood tests that showed nothing. So, I called Beneful and they gave the same generic answer they have given everyone who complained about their food. Then, I went and complained on their FB page, which led me to another spiel to try and placate me. I have been following this for the past two weeks and today, I received coupons in the mail. They gave me two coupons worth about $40. It's a hell of a lot more cost-effective to mail out some coupons than to stand up and admit, "Hey, there is a problem with our product. Maybe we should do the right thing and address the issue." I don't want any coupons for your food. I will be sending them back to you, Purina. I bought a 31.1-lb bag of Purina Beneful Playful Life dog food, and now, both my dogs are throwing up within 30 minutes after they eat. I fed it to them twice, and both times, they reacted by throwing up. I have fed them this type of dry dog food for about a year now, and they like it very much. However, you might want to look into a recall of this product at this time. The bag says best used by July 2013. Thanks.

We switched to Beneful because it was economical and was readily available for purchase at Wal-Mart. We have three Siberian huskies. My oldest dog Nikita, which was 9 years old, became very lethargic, had difficulty in walking, had mild seizures, and eventually had shortness of breath. We took the dog to the vet four times, did every test, blood-work panels, and x-rays - we even took the dog for an ultra sound at a specialist. Even after the ultra sound, it could not show hepatocutaneous. The vet could not make a diagnosis based on all the test results. The vet believed her to have hepatocutaneous or pemphigus and recommend steroids, Pepcid, pain pills, and antibiotics. Now, we have bills totaling more than $1100. Over the course of the next three weeks, we watched the dog lose about 20 pounds in weight and the dog got to the point that she could not walk on her own.
Like many other complaints listed here, my dog had all the same symptoms (allergies, pemphigus, loosing of fur, and crying when would lie down). She would not walk anymore, would urinate in the house, and slept constantly. We took the dog to our vet one last time. They were out of options and the dog was now showing signs of jaundice, fluid in the abdomen, and breathing difficulties. It was then that we put her down. The dog no longer had a life of its own. After seeing 157 complaints (some going back as far as 2009), I am very angry that nothing has been done to pull this toxic poison dog food from the shelves! After reading all of these complaints, I am convinced that we poisoned our dog.
What’s really scary is that the other two huskies are now showing similar symptoms. I have immediately removed them from Beneful! If someone files a class action lawsuit, please include me! It is not right that a perfectly healthy dog had to die because the makers of Beneful willingly have known about this for years. How come the FDA does not do something about this? People need to get angry and sue the pants of them. They make billions and are killing peoples’ pets in the process. My husky was not just a pet, she was a family member. I am just torn that my action, by feeding the dog a cheap economical dog food, is really what killed her! Someone should list all the suppliers in the lawsuit as well because they made it available to consumers. As a final note: I am very angry that this happened to my beloved husky!

My dog got very sick in June of this year. After numerous testings, blood work twice, x-rays and ultrasounds, we were unable to determine a cause for her illness. We were looking for hepatocutaneous syndrome, which is a liver disease. But the ultrasound didn't show signs of this disease but did show changes to the liver. We ended up treating her with steroids because they thought she had pemphigus, pain pills, and Pepcid to help with her appetite.
Two weeks ago, I had to put my sweetheart down. She was jaundiced and had fluid in her abdomen, and her breathing was labored. This was definitely a liver problem. We have been feeding Beneful to all three of our dogs. Our puppy has started vomiting, and both dogs now do not want to eat. I think it is horrible that this is out on the market, and I am now wondering if I, in fact, killed my own dog.

He is doing better but still has the hairball type cough every once in a while. I want them to take this ** off the market asap and reimburse us for our loss. They won't do it because they do not care. It's all about the money to this greedy company. I always had faith in Purina products but never again. I have written a complaint before on the Beneful ad, but I want to keep telling people about this terrible dog food (Beneful) that we have been giving to our babies. And yes, they are my babies. I have been feeding my dog Beneful Healthy Radiance, and he has gone from a very healthy, one-year-old dog to a lethargic, sick dog. The last 31-pound bag I purchased from Wal-Mart 2 weeks ago is when he really started getting sick and I noticed the symptoms more. He started to vomit after eating the food and now refuses to eat. Head shaking, itchy skin and ears, and diarrhea. Also, an hour after eating, he would start shaking his head and make choking noises. At first, I thought he was choking then realized he was having a seizure. My dog is sick today – very lethargic, vomiting, and whining a lot as if something is bothering him.
I am angry because my dog before eating Beneful was a very happy, healthy, energetic dog. I started feeding my dog Beneful 5 months ago and regret it. He never had these symptoms prior to me feeding the food. I assumed it was environmental until I realized the correlation of symptoms with feeding. My dog is not just a pet; he is my PTSD service dog also. The fact he is sick from this food makes me even more upset, and it inhibits him from being able to do the job he is trained to do. It is not his fault; it is the dog food company. I have read complaints that have been posted for the last 7 months. I ask why Purina has not put out a warning statement and remove the dog food from the shelves?

The first week of March, our little healthy seven-year-old Chihuahua started becoming ill: horrible diarrhea, vomiting, she was lethargic and wouldn't eat or drink. After a few days, she got worse and started having bloody diarrhea and wouldn't even get up to walk, eat, drink, play or go potty. Even if we called her name, she didn't even have the strength to lift her head. We immediately took her to the vet again and after tests, they said she had food poisoning and was dying. We had no other choice than to put her out of her misery that night. We felt horrible thinking that she had gotten into something.
My 11-year-old had to watch her bestfriend die a horrible death. She wouldn't sleep for days. Our dog, Princess, was on Beneful Healthy Weight at the time. (Attached are two images of our little Princess; one of her healthy and the other is a picture my daughter wanted of the two of them together for the last time.) About two weeks ago, our two-year-old Lab started getting sick with the same symptoms. We immediately freaked out and racked our brains trying to figure out what the problem was. After a week of doing rice and chicken and her starting to get better, we put her back on her food only for her to get sick again. Finally, I got on Google to see if there had been a recall of her Beneful Playful Life food to which I found this site among others. We immediately took her off her food again and put her on Blue Buffalo and guess what!? She is much much better now! No more sickness and she is up and playing like a puppy again.
I am so disappointed in this company for having the ability to get online and see posts such as these and not recall their food. People's animals are dying! These are our bestfriends, our family members, our children's playmates and Purina is sitting around and doing nothing. I will never buy this food again and will tell everyone with ears not to ever buy anything Purina for their dog. Shame on you, Purina. Step up and do something before other innocent animals die.

Then after a few days, she got really, really sick (throwing up bile) and really, really bad diarrhea. We took her to the Vet. At the end of August, my sister posted a link to this website as a warning to dog owners about Beneful. I couldn't believe it. This is what my dog was eating! I immediately stopped feeding him this and put him on a diet of rice and chicken stock for a few days. The diarrhea stopped a day later! He is now eating Iams food and is fine. It is time to pull this food off the shelf. While some dogs can tolerate this food, I wonder what might be happening on the inside. The first year there were no problems at all - she’s a happy and healthy baby peek-a-pom. Then we started her on Beneful and she started shaking her head and was choking. And for a year, the vet couldn't figure out why her ears and the choking were happening. Then the seizures started. We would sit and cry watching our baby shake. The vet was going to put her on anti-seizure meds. She stopped eating, thank god, so we thought maybe if we switched her food. We started giving her pieces out of our hand and she liked it and now the seizures have stopped. No more shaking her head violently and choking. She is getting better. I feel that if we had left her on Beneful, she would have starved herself or had a seizure that could’ve taken her out. I am mad - very mad. Today, she is at the vet for the 3rd time in 5 weeks. The vet told us that she did not think Casey would make it through the night last night. This started with her vomiting and her not being able to keep anything down. She stopped eating anything. She has gone from 18 lbs. to 13 lbs. in 5 weeks. The vet gave her antibiotics but that did nothing for her and the vet has X-Rayed her looking for tumors. Nothing. Her stomach is so distended that the vet said there could be a tumor but she was unable to see anything on the film. I bought the Beneful at Walmart and another friend of mine said he feeds his dog Beneful bought at Walmart and now his dog has stopped eating. I wish I had read these comments years ago! Last August our dog collapsed, went into convulsions, and died on the sidewalk while out on a walk. She was 10 years old, hadn't been feeling well and was bloated, but we thought it was partly due to the heat. She was a house dog and it was a cooler night on our walk. The vet said her death was due to organ failure. We since have a rescue dog that we have had since December and recently noticed that she has been itching a lot with a skin irritation. We thought maybe it was the soap our dog groomer was using and mentioned it to her. She did some research and found this site. We fed our previous dog Beneful for most of its life and currently had been feeding it to our puppy for 9 months. That bag of dog food is going in the trash. After reading these comments and our experience with this product, I am sure Purina is to blame for our pet's death and the current distress.

Our vet recommended this food due to our pit's allergies. The first month, he was great! The 2nd month, we have had bugs. We called our exterminator and he told us that the bugs were "clothes moths" that were coming from the dog food. He said that when the dog food is at the plant, the moths lay their larvae in the food and then it's packaged with the food and then the eggs hatch and basically swarm your house. Exterminator bill was $100. We took our dog back to the vet because he started having issues with his ears. After almost $150, we hope that the issues have been resolved. While speaking to the vet, he told us that he uses the same food and he is also having trouble with the moths. Just this week, we have noticed chunks of hair gone off our dog. This food needs to be removed off the shelves immediately.

I inquired on what healthy food I could feed her. My neighbor gave a name and my dog has been on it ever since, which is about three weeks. Also, I had to start giving her rice and beef, just to get her to eat more. Hopefully, she is on the road to recovery. I'm ashamed that Purina is backing their Beneful product. My boyfriend has a beautiful loving Boxer. About 2 months ago, he had 2 seizures. We thought nothing of it, just that he was getting old. A little bit after that, he started to throw up after eating his food. He now has horrible diarrhea, constantly panting and wheezing, dehydrated, and won't eat. He has lost between 20 to 30 lbs. He has become lethargic and his eyes are dull. Also, in the bag of food was tons of maggots and mouths, that is disgusting!
He has seen the vet on a few different occasions and is now on some medicine to make him comfortable. It is only time now. They have taken him off all dog food and is only eating boiled chicken breast, scrambled eggs, and lean ground beef. Since he's been on the medicine, he has started to eat again and his bowels are somewhat regular. The panting and wheezing continues though, and same with the discomfort look in his eyes. I have called and complained but still, nothing is being done.
I called the FDA today and he gave me the number for the FDA consumer complaints coordinators - but I was unable to call until Tuesday because of the holiday. I have even sent this link to Beneful on Facebook and sent them an email. Still nothing! I will get to the bottom of this!

I was told by a friend just recently about Beneful. I have read these stories and our healthy 11 1/2 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Annie, died this past January. Our dogs have been on Beneful for the past year or so, and she just started having seizures for no reason – a couple here and there, then daily and multiple times a day. So after 5 days of this, we took her to the vet. He gave her a shot, did some blood work and sent us with some pills. She seemed fine then he called and said her kidneys weren't functioning at full capacity and her numbers were real high and to keep her on the meds and see how she does. That lasted about 4 days and the seizures came back; she was shutting down and disoriented, so we took her back again; more blood work and said her numbers were still bad. She dies 3 days later.
This was such a shock for we have two outside dogs who are 16 and 15 and guess what... we give them different food from a farm place where we buy bulk with our horse feed; Lil Annie was on Beneful. I used to feed her Iams but read somewhere that they animal tested, plus I thought Beneful was healthy and more economical. I seriously know now that this killed her; she was the most athletic, strong, healthy dog that I thought would be with us for another 7-8 years. I definitely will be writing or calling Purina and now will research and start feeding our 2 pugs a new food!

We have noticed that our purebred Samoyed pups (1.5 years) were not eating their food and losing weight. They would pick around the Beneful. Our purebred black Lab (1 year) became very sick – vomiting and diarrhea, swollen face and eyes – as did our Sammies too. We took them to the vet. Cultures were done on all; everything came back ok except for a bad stomach (swollen) in all three dogs. We had many a day of pureeing food and syringing water down to keep them hydrated. We changed their food to homemade only. Three weeks later, all are doing well. We thought it was something they caught, so we put out the Beneful. Nope, they would not touch it.
Previously, we used to have 3 Sammies and a Ridgeback/Lab cross; all died with very bad sicknesses. We started feeding the Beneful to them about 4 years ago, and they went downhill fast in their health – tumors in the throat and mouth, urinary problems, sores in privates, swelling, and white and red blood cell damages. I feel horrible to know that this is what it was. No more… It has got to come off the shelves now!

Last week, I woke to find my lab mix had thrown up about 8 times before 7am, including the food and bile. My daughter called the vet and was given instructions what to watch for during the day. We took her home with antibiotics and a hydration camel back. That night she was doing projectile diarrhea. She didn't drink or eat for two days and was lethargic, labored breathing.
It was a close call until the antibiotics kicked in. This week, someone had sent a link on the consumer complaints on Beneful. It appears this is the culprit and the vet is checking it out. Beneful claims they have had no complaints on the dog food, yeah right! We had just put down our Golden three weeks ago with cancer of the spleen and I am now even questioning if this is related to the Beneful. I have 3 generally healthy dogs, ages 11, 10 and 8. About 6 months ago, I started feeding them only Beneful. They had eaten the food elsewhere and seemed to really love it. For a couple of years, I mixed Beneful in with their regular food but then they would eat around the normal brand. Eventually I started a Beneful only diet.
On Monday morning, I was awakened by my dog having cluster seizures. I rushed him to the emergency vet. From there, we went to his regular vet (once they opened). They kept him pretty doped up on Valium because the anti-seizure medication made him sick. When we went back later in the day, we were told that every time he comes out of the Valium, he continued to have seizure, that if we can't get it under control, we would have to put him down. My poor guy had hours upon hours of seizures. This was all new to us. X-rays, labs, etc. came back okay. There was no explanation.
I've missed 4 days of work, my husband has missed 2. The vet bills in a day's time came to almost $700. During the first day and a half we have cried, screamed, mourned, worried, every negative emotion there is, let our family and friends know that we were losing him. I continued to give him Valium through his IV. I had to learn how to insert a catheter because he was unable to urinate. We thought he was almost dead, even though he continued to breath with struggle.
On Tuesday morning, the vet said, "Give it another 24 hrs. If we don't have significant improvement, we will be having a different conversation." We made the plans we needed and it has been one of the hardest things we've ever had to do. Then, Tuesday afternoon he started trying to lift his head, started to respond to his name. He started to look at us instead of through us. We started to have some hope. Too weak to eat his regular dog food, I made chicken breast, rice, and egg for him and then mushed it up in the chopper.
On Wednesday, he started to stand. He continued to eat. He began to drink well. Later that day, he tried walking, although continuously falling over. We weren't sure if he'd had brain damage from his body temperature, possibly neurological damage that would never be recovered. I had a friend over to help as I had been completely exhausted with little to no rest. I was in the kitchen preparing more food for him and was going to feed the other dogs their bowl of Beneful when my friend began reading a warning that was posted yesterday about dogs having seizures. She then said, "Rachel, don't ever feed them Beneful." I said, "Tammy, that is what I feed them."
My heart is now breaking for all the moms and dads, brothers and sisters etc. of the dogs that were put down, not knowing the cause of the sudden attack of cluster seizures. Now, I have an answer as to why all of a sudden my healthy dog became deathly ill. But he would've been fed Beneful again once (and if) he becomes able to eat dry food again. The thought that what I have chosen to feed them, what I buy, what I put in their bowl being the cause of my dog's death, I would never recover from this. Needless to say, I have gotten rid of the Beneful and have chosen Blue Buffalo. It's pricey but my dogs are my babies and I do not wish them death. Today, he started to walk without falling over. He is now peeing on his own, has had one bowel movement today, which is the first in 4-5 days.
Beneful needs to be removed from the shelves. Purina needs to acknowledge their actions and provide necessary funding to the owners of these animals suffering. Not everyone can afford to take time off work, to pay hundreds in vet bills. Therefore, the only option is to have the dog put down. How many dogs have been put down because of Purina's negligence? I have already warned many dog owners that feed the family (let's face it, a dog is part of the family, not just a pet) Beneful and I hope to save the lives of many dogs that would otherwise be okay! It's a disgusting act of violence and animal cruelty.

Then, someone posted all these complaints about Beneful on Facebook. What a shock to find lots of families going through similar episodes of illness. I called Purina and was assured that there were no other reports of dogs getting sick from Beneful. Unfortunately, the lot number on the bag was smeared so I couldn’t tell her that. One of the things the CSR told me was that there was avocado in that specific brand. I told her avocado was poisonous and she said that only the skin and pits were but that the flesh was very good for dogs. She then told me that they are "peeled very carefully". Yeah right... Walking through the dog food aisles, she sniffed around and went nuts when she got to the Beneful bag. So I thought, "Okay. We'll give the small bag a shot and see how you like it." This was the worst mistake ever. This 6-pound Pomeranian was in perfect health. She's obedient, energetic, happy, and playful. Within 5 days of eating this food, she was needy, lethargic, and whiny. At the end of week 1, the diarrhea started, then the vomiting. By day 10, it was bile and blood in her stool.
We immediately made an emergency trip to the vet. As soon as we mentioned the switch to Purina Beneful, the vet advised us to immediately discontinue use and avoid Purina products. He issued her an antibiotic to be on the safe side and issued a boiled chicken and white rice diet for 5 days. We are at the 7-day mark since the visit to the vet and all is back to normal. Whatever Purina is putting in their food could have killed our dog and by reading what's out there on the net, numerous other dog owners have had similar negative experiences with this food. Someone needs to address this with the powers that be. Where's the FDA on this?

I have 2 dogs, one has IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and needs to be on a special food. It was expensive to keep both dogs on it, but we did for a very long time (the dog with IBS would eat the other dog's food, that is why we kept both on the expensive special food). So, I looked for a food that I thought would be healthy for my dog that doesn't have IBS - I picked Beneful. She has been fighting ear infections (seems like she has a constant one) and skin infections (was told it could be ringworm, but it wasn't). I spent a lot of money on Lotrimin and the people at Walgreens probably think I have some serious issues with jock itch, and we still don't have an answer for the cause. She never had any of those issues when on the special food. I never even thought about it being the food. She is my dog that has no issues, so I thought! Many vet visits and lots of money have been spent (I love my dogs and do it again) but this makes me so angry. How can they get away with this? I'm throwing the food out today!

My little Dachshund out of the blue became very sick. She started with a little blood in her stool to it being nothing but blood and her throwing up. It went on for days. I called a vet asked him what I could do because I really did not have money to pay for a vet bill. He told me to put her on a 24 hour no food and little water diet; if that did not work, bring her in. She seemed to be getting better during those 24 hours but after just a few days of going back on her Beneful, she became sick again. I did not think she would make it to the vet, opened that I am, but she did and I took her in. They kept her for 4 days and she was all better when I picked her up.
They sent special food in can home and she remained on it till she was out of it and they told me I could put her on her food. Once again she went back on her Beneful because at that point I did not even think it had done that to her. After about 2 weeks, she was right back in the same shape. I called the vet, went and paid $92.00 for more meds and food from vet. Once again, she improved after no Beneful. After reading this, I know for a fact that was what was wrong with her.
I am angered that Beneful is still on the market. I almost lost my dog due to them still not caring and not telling anyone. The day I got her to the vet, he called me that afternoon and said he wasn’t sure she would pull through but he was not giving up and thank God she was saved. Then 2 weeks later, after going back on that trash they call food, she was a sick little pup again. Shame on that company! They cost me almost $700.00 of vet bills and endless worries and tears over my dog. Pull that crap from the shelves, just because you, the company does not care for animals, we as owners do! My dog is a part of my family so how would you feel if someone kept marketing and selling food that killed part of your family. I suspect you would be just as angered as I am!
I will be contacting them for reimbursement for my vet bills and to tell them what I really feel for almost killing my dog because they are greedy. And to think, I put her on the Beneful healthy weight because I thought it was a good food and it would help her lose weight. They sure know how to make trash sound good! My dog still does not act herself since those 2 episodes of sickness, but Beneful does not care, that is obvious!

My dog is overweight, so I bought Beneful thinking it would be better for him. Since he started eating Beneful the last month, he has been itchy and vomiting. He was around a puppy that had fleas, so I thought he caught fleas. I bathed him and applied flea and tick medicine. That didn’t help. Then he started the vomiting, so again I thought it was from the flea and tick shampoo and medicine. Again, I bathed him with a mild shampoo. Then, I read on Facebook about Beneful. I threw it out and gave my dog Kibbles ‘n Bits. He ate a whole bowl and is so happy running around now. He hasn’t been playing much the last week. He hasn’t been eating either. Thank you for this information.
I think my dog knew that Beneful was making him sick. To me it was, too. My dog was happy and playful before I switched his food. Now, within two hours of switching back to his old food, he is getting back to his old self. The old food might not help his weight, but it isn’t making him sick. I am going to share this information. My dog is my child: I won’t feed my child something that can make them sick. I will post in a day or two to let everyone know what happens after no longer feeding the Beneful to my dog.

We had adopted a very healthy young Rottweiler from a nice lady who went to the same vet as us. We had been feeding our dogs a more natural lamb and rice food from PetSmart and decided to switch to something less expensive. My husband started purchasing Beneful for our dogs. After a short period of time, our Rottweiler began having grand mal seizures. This dog was otherwise in perfect health. We had no idea that the product could be related. Eventually, we switched them back to the more expensive brand to see if an allergy were possible. Our pug was also having skin issues as well. We wound up losing our dog Greta in June due to seizures. We spent many nights in the ER trying to calm her seizures and she had to be on medication which began to quit working. This is horrible. I am so shocked to hear that seizures were related to this product. I am angry that this could have been prevented!

He ended up throwing up 18 times in 5 hours. I rushed him to the vet and they started an IV and put him on more antibiotics. They did blood-work and said his white blood cell was very high. They told me to try switching his food off Beneful and I did. He got 100% better; however, his white blood cell is still high. We are not sure if it will ever be back to normal, but he is now a pretty healthy dog. Please don't feed your dog this food.

I usually feed my dogs Purina One and Beneful together. I only had Beneful this time and my dogs became violently ill. Not your usual loose stool because of changing dog food. This was violent, consistent, almost every hour or more for three days of vomiting and diarrhea. The poor things. I was ready to take them to the vet but we got some Purina One and they were almost instantly better. Once the food was changed, they immediately got better. No more vomiting and their stools were firm again in a day. The distress the dogs were feeling stopped almost instantly. I will never buy Beneful again and I will tell others to do the same.

I never have a diagnosis other than treating symptoms with medication like steroids. We all know steroids are bad for the organs. I recently encountered the complaints about the Beneful and just about fell over. She has been eating it for years! She has tried others but her dog likes it. What a shock to see that I can tell you from being involved that this dog is dying from eating that crap! It's unbelievable that it is still allowed to be produced with all the complaints. There has got to be someone who can do something. You all are supposed to be the start in this process, but from others posts it looks like nothing is being done. Please keep dogs from dying and fix this. I just had mom throw away her bag she has. Hopefully, we can save her dog. No thanks to anyone that should be keeping this from happening!

Is there something wrong with Beneful dog food? Many problems are listed here and I found more on other websites. If you suspect that Beneful has made your dog sick, please file a claim with Purina. You should also file a report with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Without this formal claim process, companies like this one may get away with hurting pets nationwide. It took almost a year to get the government and pet food companies to even agree that something was wrong with pet food that contained some ingredients from China. Finally, after 10,000 dogs died, it was disclosed that melamine was laced with other ingredients at a Chinese factory.
I suspect that Beneful made many of my dogs sick in June 2012. One almost died and the cost was nearly $2k. Today, while talking with their claims department to follow up on my complaint, they stated that no other complaint or claim has been filed about Beneful. I do not believe this after reading the many stories on this website. So, we must continue to share our stories on here, Facebook and Twitter. Tell your neighbors, relatives and friends about your experience with Beneful. Call your local TV stations and newspapers. Don't stop talking or texting about your experience with Beneful until Purina takes our complaints and concerns seriously. If our individual claims can be so easily hidden from the public (settlement = requirement to sign nondisclosure agreements), then the company doesn't have to own up to any problems publicly. Even worse, more animals may become sick from bad dog food.
If there are enough complaints to the FDA, they will open an investigation. At that point, I may begin talking to some of you about whether a class action lawsuit would be helpful. Thanks for finding this website. It helped me get the right care for my sick dog and I think it saved his life.

I have had two Great Pyrenees until late last night. My husband Gerald and I bought Beneful Healthy Weight just 2-3 months ago. Pedigree changed their Healthy Weight's recipe and Lucy and Joe (their names) stopped eating pedigree. So, we switched to Beneful. They loved it. No problems until 4-5 weeks ago. Lucy, age 9 1/2, started developing lameness in the left hind quarter, and weakness. That seemed to pass and she did okay.
However, within the past 2-3 weeks, her eyes seemed dull, and she began to act slightly nervous and withdrawn. Then Friday, 7-27-12, she actually urinated in the basement. She was okay later and on Saturday as well. By Sunday, when we came home from church, she had appeared to have, what we found out later, was a brain seizure. We rushed her to the emergency vet and took her home. On that trip home, another seizure, turned around went right back. A sedative was given (name on printed receipt) during the first visit.
Now at home, all Lucy did was pant excessively (which is how we found her after arriving home from church) and Pace non-stop. Tramadol was prescribed for pain starting at 8pm. I gave her some (2 pills, as needed, every 8-12 hours) and thirty minutes later another seizure, worse than the second one in the car. We rushed her back to the vet ER and she had 2-3 more there. Blood work was completed, x-rays done, all were normal. Lucy was never sick a day in her life. This is, perhaps, slightly different symptoms than the others I have read, but the seizures began only after 2-3 months after beginning the Beneful. Because the seizures took their toll on our Lucy, we had to put her down.
Our second Pyrenees, Joe, is fine, thus far, but no more Beneful for him. I cannot take the chance. We have bought our Beneful at Meijer, PetSmart and Target. I never go to Walmart. To even think that dog food could have caused this kills me. We didn't know. We just didn't know about any possible problems with Beneful.

I bought Beneful for my miniature schnauzer and after only a week of eating this food, she became very ill. It started with diarrhea. She then stopped eating and drinking. I took her to the vet where I was informed her gums and tongue were very pale, she had temperature and diarrhea. She was given an antibiotic, something for her fever and IV fluids. We took her home and were informed to push fluids with a syringe if need be and call the vet in the morning. By morning, she had blood in her stools and was lethargic and could barely stand.
I took her straight to the vet where he confirmed she did not even have a normal body temperature. Her eyes and skin were now yellow. She is currently there fighting for her life and it does not look good. I called Beneful when I returned from the vet and told them what was going on. After asking a few questions, they said they were submitting a claim and would be paying for my vet bills. This tells me there is a huge issue! My dog Abbie (a mix, Pekingese/pug) started having seizures in December 2012, shortly after changing food to Beneful dog food. Our vet was unable to determine the cause of the seizures after doing blood work. He suggested I use medication to control her seizures. I refused phenobarbital because of possible side effects. However, we were encouraged to use diazepam (Valium) to help relax. I chose to only give it to her after she had a seizure, as it seems to make her dazed and not herself. Instructions were as needed.
I continued feeding all 3 of our dogs the Beneful. Abbie seemed to like the food the most - often guarding the bowel and eating the leftovers the other 2 did not eat. They seemed not to be interested in the food and would go for long periods of time without eating. (I thought it was hierarchy in the house.) But now, I believe they just didn't like the food. I had to coax them or treat them with scraps to get them to eat it. (I even fed them by hand, which they love, just to get them to eat.)
Because the other 2 dogs were eating the Beneful without similar side effects, I did not make the connection until last weekend. When Abbie started having more seizures (frequent episodes), I realized now that the Beneful food I purchased at the end of June was the cause of the recent cluster seizures. At the end of June, I had purchased a new type of Beneful (thinking that switching flavors might entice the other 2 dogs to eat better). The new type I got is called Healthy Radiance. I chose it to get a more complete and balanced nutritious meal. (It had salmon, omega 3s, rice, and vitamin-rich veggies. Good for them, right? Wrong.)
Shortly after switching flavors, Abbie began to have more frequent seizures. Last week, she had cluster seizures (more than 50 in 2.5 days). So, I began to look online for answers on how to treat seizures in dogs. And after researching seizures and natural diets (Abbie is overweight, so I thought she might be diabetic.), I decided to put her on a natural food diet that I would make myself. So along with her new homemade dog food diet, she now got a high-cal vitamin; and because of the amount of seizures she was having, I also put her on Rescue Pet (a herbal medication that helps calm down dogs that experience seizures). As soon as I did this, we began to see immediate results. Thank the Lord, because my vet was no help at all. He wanted to run the same tests as he did in December 2011 (That cost about $250.) and to medicate her with phenobarbital. And my husband wanted me to put her down (out of her misery), which was a solution I was unwilling to settle for without trying to change her diet first. (Again, I thought she might be diabetic.)
After switching her to a diet of hamburger, white rice, and eggs (shells included, blended) which are all baked together like a meat loaf and adding the high-cal vitamin and the Rescue Pet, the seizures began to slow down and eventually stopped; that is, until I added Beneful back into her meal plan. Before the weekend was over, Abbie had a few additional seizures after I re-introduced Beneful food back into her diet.
Last week's seizures were totally crazy. Abbie began having cluster seizures at about 1:30 AM, Wednesday morning, and she had them all day Wednesday and Thursday. She was having an average of 2-5 seizures an hour. (I lost count around 50 from exhaustion as I had been up with her from the time they started.) Needless to say, this was a very frightening experience. During this time, because I was desperate to save my beloved Abbie, I began researching online how to help control the seizures. I started with switching Abbie from store-bought food to natural foods, and I added vitamins to her homemade food as well as gave her the Rescue Pet. She slowly went down to 2-3 seizures an hour to 1 every 55 minutes and then 1 every hour and 15 minutes. I was so excited when she went 2.5 hours without a seizure, and I was praying to make it to 4-6 hours without one on Friday. (Again, I was exhausted.) On Friday, she had 5 seizures. Her last one was around 8:30 PM.
So on Saturday, when she made it to her mid-day meal without a seizure, I thought it was safe to add a small amount of Beneful back into her diet, thinking it would make the homemade food last longer. I began to treat the other 2 dogs with it. And I wanted to stretch the food out, thinking the seizures were over and she was slowly acting more like her self. I added Beneful to her afternoon and evening meal. After the evening meal, she began to act weird again. She got real clingy again, and she refused to leave my side. She was still moving very slowly, and I was having to be encouraging her to take every step. She was acting like she was in a fog again. She was acknowledging her name, but she would not raise her head completely. And her demeanor was so, so different from normal. It began to concern and scare me that she might never be the same again.
It was very scary, as I was unsure if she would have permanent health problems, such as hearing, vision, or physical issues (like kidney, liver damage). But slowly, she was beginning to do some of the things she had done before the cluster seizures began. She just was not doing them as well as she had, and some of her tricks she would not do at all. She would not go outside, because she would not walk across the door's threshold without being coaxed. She would not do all her normal tricks, and she was extremely clingy, hardly leaving my side. Honestly, I wasn't sure she would ever return to her old self. On Sunday, Abbie experienced a couple more seizures. These were minor compared to what she had experienced on earlier in the week. But it dawned on me she was probably having a reaction to something in the food (based on what a man at my local pet store had told me about one of his dogs being allergic to red food dye). So, I took her completely off the Beneful, and I can say she hasn't had a seizure since.
Today (July 19), I was finally was able to research the ingredient list for Beneful dog food, and lo and behold! Red 40 food dye, along with Blue 2, Yellow 5 & 6, and something called Animal Digest is in this food. Not to mention, all the preservatives and other chemicals I have no idea what are are on the list. So, I decided to google dogs eating Beneful dog food and having seizures. Guess what! I found several sites and testimonies that are like mine. I am sure there a whole lot more out there like my Abbie's story. And unfortunately, for some, perhaps their beloved pets were put to sleep, died, or will never be the same because they suffer side effects from the seizures or from the meds they took to control the seizures, before they were able to find the cause of the seizures. (No doubt, it is Purina's Beneful dog food.)
I really think we should join together to bring media attention to this situation (It sounds like a class action lawsuit to me.), and I am not one who generally goes for that. But our beloved animals have suffered enough, so have we as their caretakers - financially, and emotionally. And I am sure Purina is aware that the dog food they are making millions of dollars off is causing severe seizure reactions in pets around the world. And I, for one, want to see the suffering stop.
I can't imagine anyone else going through what I went through with my dog Abbie. We thought we would lose her for sure. And at one point, I was thinking the unthinkable and that it might be necessary to put her to sleep. Thank God, I listened to my heart and sought a natural cure remedy (diet) for Abbie, because she is now doing better. She has not had a seizure since Sunday afternoon (July 15). Although that is the good news for us, I am still majorly concerned that she may have residual health problems and that she may suffer in the future from hearing, vision, and health problems related to the quantity of seizures she experienced last week. But for now, I am just thankful that I know the source of the problem. And my dogs will never ever again eat Purina dog food.
It's a shame really, because Purina was a name I grew up with and I believed I could trust them to provide my pet with a well-balanced, healthy nutritional diet. I trusted Purina. I wont ever trust them again! I am interested in seeking legal council. We need to petition and complain about this to the FDA or whoever has control over what companies put into our dogs' food. They should be prevented from causing further pain and suffering. Something must be done about this!

I had a two-year-old bull terrier who, last month, I had to put to sleep. I came home one night to a pool of urine and poop on the floor and dirty paw prints on the wall from my dog. His water bowl knocked all over the place, which I couldn't understand because he had never, I mean never, used the house as a bathroom or done anything like this before. I paid no mind to it like maybe he just couldn't hold his urine and had an accident. So I cleaned up the mess and let him outside. When I went to get him outside, he just looked at me like he didn't know who I was, so I just assumed he was scared because of what he did. So I had to grab his leash and pull him in the house. I put some water on his bowl and he walked right through the bowl like he didn't know what it was. I was still not thinking anything, but he's scared.
I woke up in the middle of the night to a little thump downstairs and it sounded a bit loud, but I knew it was the Chicago (my dog) maybe laying down against the door. I woke up in the morning and I came downstairs to find another pool of urine and poop. Chicago was wheezing. So now I know something is wrong. I got on the phone with my mom. Within 10 minutes, he went from laying on his stomach to laying on his side, breathing heavy. I immediately got help to get him in the car because he wouldn't get up or respond to me. He was whining on the floor. As we're driving to the vet, I was talking to him, telling him it's going to be okay. I have an SUV, so he was all the way at the back, laying on a towel. He went from not moving to jumping up in the car, so I was telling him "Cago, it's okay. Lay down," but he was standing up, falling and standing up.
That's when I noticed that he was having seizures and he's so big it's throwing him in the air and on my walls at home. So we pulled up to the vet. I was thinking he just got a rawhide stuck in his lungs, maybe, and we'll be right out. He's a beautiful, healthy bull terrier, never been sick and weighs about 60 pounds. It was the nightmare of my life. I thought I would be in and out, I was wrong. She came out telling me that it could be seizure or poisoning. I said, "Seizures? He's only 2. How can this happen out the blue?" They showed me a $1,300 estimate and told me it could be more. I ended up putting Chicago to sleep that day. It was one of the worst moments in my life. It's like pulling the cord of your kid. I couldn't understand a 2-year-old dog with seizure.
My sister called me yesterday and told me that Purina dog snacks were on the news and a family was saying things happened to their dog similar to mine. I said Chicago doesn't eat those, but I think Beneful is made by Purina. I looked it up and it was. I still had doubt because he's been eating it his whole life from the puppy chow and up until I just read all your reviews. I am blown out of the water. I had just bought Chicago that, a week before he died, a brand new bag of Beneful Playful Life and he probably only had two bowls of it. I always used to say Chicago is so big, but doesn't eat much for a 60-pound dog. Sometimes, for a whole day, he would only eat one bowl of dog food. Some days, he wouldn't eat it at all.
If this is what ended the life of my friend, son, kids' brother, my pet, please don't feed your dog this food. My daughter is still telling me to go pick Chicago up, she thinks he's better now and it's a month later. Rest in peace Chicago, we love you.

Beneful has made our boxer sick. Our boxer Rosie has stopped eating altogether. She is completely lethargic and will just stand there. She has thrown up and had diarrhea. You need to pull this off the shelf and make it right with those that have lost their dogs and had astronomical vet bills. This is unacceptable. We have also bought this from Walmart. We are taking her to the vet today. I will update again later.

I have been feeding my beagle/chihuahua mix Beneful Healthy Weight for years without any problems. A little over a week ago, he started vomiting after eating and then began refusing to eat when I set his food out for him (a major red flag because my guy never refuses a meal!). He recently sprained his front leg, so I thought at first his symptoms were because of the pain or a reaction to the meds the vet had prescribed, but it only got worse as his leg got better. After a week or so of his symptoms intensifying, it finally occurred to me it might be his food (it took so long for me to even think of this because like I said, I've been feeding him the same food for years with no issues). I switched him straight away to a diet of rice, eggs and green beans. In less than two days, his symptoms were gone and he was back to tearing into his dinner with gusto.
Needless to say, I'm never feeding him a drop of Beneful again and I'm going to warn my mom to take her Doxy off it as well. It seems to me like this is probably a case of contamination, meaning Beneful may be safe in the future, but why take the chance? I'm not sure what food I should switch him to. Does anyone have any suggestions? Reading through all the posts here, I'm just thankful that Mac's symptoms weren't more severe. I can't imagine what I would have done if I had to put him down. He's my best friend. My heart goes out to those who have lost their pets over this. Seems to me the manufacturer should take responsibility and order a recall before the same thing happens to more animals.

We have been feeding our dog the Beneful Healthy Weight for years. The store was out so I bought him the Healthy Radiance kind. After two days, he threw up all he had in his stomach, then bloody foam came up. He appeared to have some sort of seizure. He became unresponsive. I took him to the vet and he stayed overnight while they stabilized him. His liver enzymes were off the charts and his blood sugar was incredibly high. We are nearing the $1000 mark on vet bills. He still is somewhat lethargic and has eaten only one can of the prescription diet in 2-1/2 days. He had a more extensive blood test today to see if there is a reason for his liver numbers to be so high. He is on the prescription diet for three weeks to see if that helps at all.

I have 6 dogs, all rescues. All six began showing signs of something wrong after I purchased a bag of Beneful Healthy Weight from Sam's Club on June 15 in Indiana. They have no history of vomiting, diarrhea or distress. Three became very ill over this past week. One is in critical condition with Acute Pancreatitis. He stopped eating his normal amount of food over the last week and began throwing up bloody foam on June 29th, 2012. In fact, he experienced projectile vomiting during one very difficult episode. He was rushed to the animal hospital 8 hours after the first episode and has been on an IV for three days. It appears that he may recover some, but his liver is now swollen and a complete blood panel indicates that his liver experienced some kind of toxin. A few more hours and he may not have survived. The cost so far is in excess of $1,200.
The other two dogs also consumed Beneful and threw up a bloody foam, but only once or twice and are now doing better. They are not 100% yet after three days, but have not required hospitalization. All six showed signs of indifference to their food after I began feeding them out of this last bag of Beneful. I thought it might be the weather even though they are house dogs and are never left out in the yard by themselves. It progressed slowly over the following week, but three became very sick within a couple days of each other. The only common thread among all 6 dogs is Beneful. Nothing else new has been introduced to them.
I suggest that anyone posting after me, please include the store where the food was purchased. Save the bags and receipts if you have Beneful today because that may be the only way to hold the manufacturing accountable. If your pet is experiencing vomiting or other extreme and unusual (for them) symptoms of illness, please consider seeking treatment ASAP. If at night, find your local emergency hospital. The emergency vets have made it clear to me that had I waited another day, my dog would be dead. He was 5% dehydrated and had lost 21% of his normal body weight in just a few days. There is nothing we can do for them at home because many medicines are required to stop the nausea and treat the organs affected by whatever may be in this pet food. Good luck to all!

I have two strays: a 14-yr-old female and a 1-yr-old Jack Russell /Westie mix male. They are both the light of my eyes. I have always fed Beneful to my girl, Ibis, and she loved it. Then Johnson came along and I started buying Beneful Puppy for him, too. He also liked it a lot. About a month and a half ago, I fed them both. Ibis seemed a little lethargic and lacking energy, but I didn't make too much of it, since she is a 14-yr-old gal; age can do that to you. But then I fed Johnson and two minutes after swallowing the last bite, he vomited as if he had swallowed a whole bag of food. I thought, since he is a puppy and a very hyper one, that it was because he wouldn't stop jumping up and down. So, I didn't feed him again, until next day in the afternoon. Again, Ibis was just laying around, but Johnson vomited again.
Monday morning I took him to the vet thinking he might have swallowed a piece of toy or something; his belly was a tad swollen, but he seemed fine. No energy loss or anything like it. Vet said he most probably had gastroenteritis, so he was injected and given antibiotics for five days. Vet said to give him wet food instead for those five days and then introduce him to dry food again and see how it went. So I did, wet food was great for him, he loved it of course. But when I gave him the same Beneful I did before, again he puked his brains out, about four times. That was it for me, at that moment I knew it was the food. I threw it out and kept him on wet food for about another week, then purchased another brand I had never tried before, recommended by a friend, called Pro Pet 100% balanced, soy free, full of protein. I gave him handful first to see how he took it. He loved it, then a little more, and he's been on it ever since. Ibis is also eating the adult version and she is a little more alert and energetic. I'm so sorry for the ones who lost their loved pets. Do not feed Beneful to your dogs. Do not take the chance.

I purchased a bag of the Beneful Healthy Fiesta dog food at Wal-Mart because they were out of the usual Purina Lamb & Rice formula. Within 6 to 8 hours, my 10-year-old Lab began throwing up & having bloody diarrhea, also breathing hard and acting unsettled. I took her to the Vet and after several hundred dollars in bills, I still have a very sick dog. The next few hours will tell us if she will recover. If I'm forced to put her in the hospital for the weekend, my bills could be close to $1000 or more. This product needs to be removed from the shelves now, before it does more damage!

My sister's dog started to throw up and have just bloody stools. This was Sunday night. On Monday afternoon, her dog's symptoms worsened and the 7-month-old puppy was put down. The remainder on the dog food was given to my mother, who has 4 dogs. They did not assume it was the dog food (Purina Beneful). The dog was tested negative for Parvo. My mom gave the dog food to her 2 puppies (from the same litter as my sister's). On Tuesday, one dog was immediately sick; the other one, early this morning, has the same symptoms as the other dog.
The two 7-month-old puppies just had to be put down. They could barely move and couldn't eat or drink without vomiting or passing blood. My sister called Purina. They said it wasn't their problem. She then posted an ad and got two people within 5 minutes saying they have the same issues from the same food. She also mentioned my mother's dogs. They immediately said they would cover my sister's vet bills and the cost of the dog food. And we're supposed to believe they don't know there is an issue? Why hasn't there been a recall?

Like the previous person, I have been feeding my cavalier Beneful for several months. Purina was one of the names my vet recommended. This last bag or two just seemed like it were contaminated. Lately, she has not been wanting to eat the dry dog food like she normally does. This past Sunday night, she threw up; and in the past few days, her feces has not been normal. She is not, however, lethargic; but her appetite is definitely not the same when I put out her dog food. I also give her Beneful soft food in the little containers and sometimes mix it with the dry. So, the containers might be contaminated as well. I decided to look online to see if there was a recall, and then, I noticed this website. So I am definitely not the only person who feels this way. They really do need to recall this product!

Beneful Healthy Fiesta - I also have fed my dogs Beneful for some time. However, the last bag I bought has done the same thing everyone else has described. My Dachshund just yesterday was acting lethargic, started vomiting and today was shooting crimson red, bloody diarrhea. I took off to the vet where he is on IVs and 2 different kinds of antibiotics. He's told me that it doesn't look good and that the next 24 hours are crucial. Now my toy poodle is starting to throw up. He has advised me to bring her in the morning so he can check her. What's worse is he said another client of his brought in her two dogs just last week with the same symptoms and both her dogs passed within 24 hours.
Is Purina not accountable for the death of so many pets? My dog is family to me. I am devastated. Do attorneys not read this site? Something has got to be done. Maybe if enough of us get together, regardless of our geographic locations, we can put an end to this.

I have two dogs and have been feeding both of them Beneful dog food for quite a while. Yesterday, the younger dog (Abby) started having diarrhea. I thought maybe she had gotten into something bad, but I could not find or think of anything. This morning she still had diarrhea and was acting strange. I tried to feed her and our older dog (Sasha) and both of them refused to eat the Beneful dog food. I also thought that it smelled a little more potent than usual. Then, I found this site and realized other people have been having the exact same issue recently. Abby seems to be doing a bit better now; hopefully, she will have no further problems because of this. Now, I am going on Beneful’s site to make a complaint there! And I am going to warn my local grocery store!

I took her to the vet on Monday morning, found elevated white blood cell count and high liver enzymes. She was on IV for 2 days and nights and given antibiotics. I had to clean all the mess in the house. How come this is not on the news to report these problems that kill other animals? They better stop selling those foods. Do something.

I went to take the dog food back, and because I didn't have the bill, I guess it was tossed out by mistake. The store would not take it back! The date on the bag was not expired. Please, I want to be compensated for this bad food! Thank you.

I took him to the vet last night, found elevated white blood cell count and high liver enzymes. He was on IV overnight and given antibiotics. He still won't eat and is not improving. Why is it still on the shelves? My dog will be a year old in a few weeks. We recently took him with us on a 5-hour trip and I bought a brand new bag of Beneful before we left last week. I put the food down for him when we got there and usually the food is gone within seconds of it hitting the ground, but he took a couple of bites and turned his nose up. I figured the long trip had gotten to him and thought nothing of it. He's been having diarrhea since he finished the first bowl, and again, I just thought maybe it was the trip. Now, we're back home and it's still going on, except now he's lounging around, curled up in a ball. The poor guy looks like he is in so much pain. He has been eating Beneful for the past few weeks with no problems. We tend to stock up on it because he is a big dog. We go through a lot of food, but it seems this batch is tainted and needs to be recalled. And now that I found this, I'm beginning to wonder how many dogs are going to have to get seriously ill before they pull the ** off the shelves. Clearly, there is a problem.

We changed our dog to Beneful, and she is now sick and has the same symptoms as everyone else has listed - panting, diarrhea, and vomiting. I am so furious, and I assure you I will do everything possible to take action against this company. My dog may come home today; that is a maybe, not a yes. She is better; however, we don't know yet. Her weekend stay in emergency care is more than $800, and that doesn't include vet bills we have yet to see. How can a company with this many complaints keep this on the shelf? I don't get it. And what does it take to get it pulled? Help, please.
