VRBO.com is a scam. We rented a property, when we arrived the bed sheets were wet and smelled like urine and there was a fast food coupon taped above the door frame in one of the rooms that was covering a small hole. Concerned that this was a camera we abruptly packed and left the property. We reached out to the owner and VRBO expressing our concerns and asked for a refund. We were abruptly denied a refund. VRBO service stated that I should have stayed around and investigated further instead of leaving to assure I had plenty of evidence. VRBO had no concerns to assure guest safety and does not protect the consumer.

VRBO allows hosts and third-party management groups to contact guests outside their system. After booking a listing, the host contacted me a month later, demanding an additional $80 cleaning fee. I provided my invoice, which confirmed the cleaning fee was already paid, but the host insisted I pay the cleaning crew directly. When I reached out to VRBO, they assured me I didn’t owe any extra fees but also admitted they couldn’t guarantee the host wouldn’t withhold crucial listing details if I refused to pay. After relaying VRBO’s response to the host, he told me not to worry about it—only to contact me again weeks later, just after my free cancellation window had closed, demanding an additional $50 maintenance fee.

This occurred just nine days before my trip. I once again reached out to VRBO, explaining that the host was attempting to charge extra fees outside their system. VRBO assured me they would help, stating I was not obligated to pay anything beyond the original listing fees and offering to contact the host to facilitate a cancellation with a refund. I explicitly confirmed that I would still receive a refund, and they reassured me not to worry. The host ultimately accepted the cancellation and agreed to provide a refund.

However, now—three weeks later—VRBO is claiming I am not entitled to a full refund because I requested the cancellation outside the designated window, despite previous promises from customer service and a manager confirming otherwise. I have retained all correspondence documenting their assurances and am waiting for a resolution. If I do not receive the full refund, I will proceed with a chargeback. Given VRBO’s handling of this situation and their allowance of hosts to contact guests directly for additional payments, I will no longer use their platform.

If you list your property on VRBO or are considering it - beware! VRBO sent me a renter who used a stolen credit card and destroyed my home! Then, after a chargeback, VRBO took back the rental payment ($11,000), took back the security deposit, and offered little compensation for $15k in damages. When I asked VRBO how they prevent fraud, they said they check that the booking name matches the credit card. COMPLETE LIE! After the tenant left, I received a “Rate your guest” email and the name was totally different. When I called VRBO back, they said “Well, it could be a family member.” So essentially, they don’t do any checks and expose all owners to these dangerous & costly risks. If there is any problem, it falls 100% on the owner. VRBO doesn’t give a damn about you. All they care about is getting their commission. STAY AWAY!

VRBO allowed property owner to steal nearly $2000 when they cancelled our booking unexpectedly and kept the deposit. Property was owned by Haller Coastal Homes in California. Spent nearly 3 hours with VRBO customer service which were not helpful and obviously did not have the ability to issue any sort of compensation for our substantial loss. I would not trust VRBO again as they do not seem to have any ability to support consumers and seem to just be a gateway for fraudulent postings and theft.

So apartment was occupied, my access been refused and I had to sleep 5 nights in my car cause high season on Canary Island, nothing under 300$ per night was available! VRBO doesn't allow guests to RATE the hosts unless they stayed in the apartment! Wow HOW UNFAIR is that rule???? So I been in the street, although I booked and paid 6 months in advance! And I’m not even permitted to COMMENT on how not reliable those hosts are???? Very bad experience I’m sorry to say.👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

I have used VRBO to rent vacation properties for probably 20 years but will never use them again. Instead of spending a fortune on tv advertising they should go back to vetting the properties they list. In last 15 years we've rented in Palm Springs. Last year on VRBO site we rented a property that was listed by a company, not an owner, and the company cancelled the rental a month before we were to go! This year we again went to VRBO renting a property for the backyard pool and hot tub, I'm a swimmer; and the interior jacuzzi tub. Our payment however was made to management company Vacasa. What a disappointment.

On arrival after a 5am start, long flight day we arrived at the property, were unable to access the property with the lock code; ended up on hold 30 minutes, agent unable to get us in either access was much more detailed than putting in a code!) and finally got us access with a key from a lock box. Exhausted I went to the tub - no hot water and the plug didn't fit so wouldn't hold water even if there was hot water. Lights wouldn't go on in the master bedroom or living room, fans wouldn't turn on.

Next day agent came to rectify above, and I asked them to heat pool and hot tub and show us how to work as there was no guide to operate anything in this property - not the fire pit which you had to dig out the gas coils and manually light with a barbeque lighter at random spots around the surface as the on/off didn't work. WHO WOULD KNOW THIS??? We paid for pool heat and they charged us $99.00/day instead of the $72 on our contract. Our first day of pool heat was 7 days later after a Vacasa rep came and tried a different way of operating to see if that worked, and had a pool professional come and replace the ignition switch.

FYI, at this point I looked up the property on reddit and found that the tenant who was in before us had the same problem with both the bath tub (no heat and plug not working) and had NO heat for their entire rental. So the owner and management company knew this before we arrived, and subsequently said this was a new property for them so they didn't really know what worked or didn't!!! And obviously relied on tenants to complain of anything amiss, which covered a lot. Further, we have friends with a pool and hot tub in Palm Springs and their monthly cost is $1000. So this owner was counting on an additional $2000 in his pocket! Heating the pool remained an issue causing us great stress constantly dipping our toe in every morning and finding it freezing, with the hot tub the same, triggering more calls to Vacasa.

One week before our departure a different pool repair guy came, replaced the ignition switch AGAIN, and showed a different way to operate the pool, which miraculously worked. So we had 6 days out of 28 with no stress, and the pool and hot tub working. This property was $9,000 in a terrible area where I wouldn't walk in the daytime. A major road ran at the back of the yard, and airplanes flew over the front of the property at 5am several days a week - something I enquired about before renting but was told they didn't know if it was on the path of flights.

On reporting to VRBO, they cancelled their booking fee which was on top of the rental fee and under 1k. Vacasa said they would not refund any money because we hadn't paid for pool heat! Obviously they didn't speak to their property manager of this house who had credited back into free pool days what we had already paid and for compensation for the problems we had had with this house. Based on that we and the continuing pool problems, we had more than paid for pool heat for 2 months! Based on this I would never rent from VRBO and especially VACASA who are in over their head.

This is a total rip off. Do not get scammed. I was charged a property that was not available and definitely not the description they gave me. Was never sent the check in information and after driving 3 hours was unable to get into the misrepresented property. They charged me before I even checked in and refused to give me a refund even saying I booked with Expedia and not them. The property contact was not even a real number and the location was a coordinate not an address. I turned VRBO in for fraud to my credit card and had to get a whole new credit card. Refunds are not given prior to 7 days of arrival. My description under amenities/ pool features had pool and communal checked off. I am being told they granted the cancellation with full refund due to “misrepresentation.” How can it be misrepresentation when I checked off pool and communal!? They stated that I need to write the pool is a short walk away and not in the back yard. Poor customer service, unprofessional and the company does not even stand by their own policies in place. I have worked with VRBO, Booking.com, Airbnb, and various other vacation rental sites. By far, VRBO is the rudest, worst in Customer service, and deceptive in the properties they list. My first and only experience with VRBO was a place in Naples, Florida that advertised as a charming beach bungalow. It turns out when I arrived. It was actually a garage poorly converted into a studio with paint and mediocre furniture. The inside pictures of the place looked great, but pictures can do a lot. I was put in a garage in the back of a home, and that Home☀️🏠♥️ wasn’t even a bungalow.

The minute I walked into this garage all I could smell was mold and mustiness. There is no way I could’ve slept there that night. It was spring break and everything was booked. Thankfully, I jumped onto Airbnb and found an empathetic host who put me into one of his places a day early and ran over there on his own and cleaned it up for me so I had a place to sleep that Night. That should tell you the main difference between these two vacation sites. I spent four hours on the phone with three different agents, all of them, insisting there was nothing wrong with the listing.

Oh, did I mention that it was advertised that this charming bungalow had a washer and dryer, and when I got there, a sign was taped onto the washer and dryer saying out of order. I had this place rented for two weeks. VRBO refused to give me my money back. Thankfully, the host had enough sense about her and she was willing to refund me the money minus a cleaning fee. Renter beware! Do not use VRBO for your vacation rental.

I asked why so much difference for one night to two nights and they said the pricing dynamics change daily. I understand the price differences for different days of the week but really? We booked a property in Florida to visit Disney World many months ago. Since then the U.S. elected a new president who is openly hostile to Canada and threatening to annex or destroy our Country economically. We thought we were dealing with a decent and honorable property owner on VRBO and asked for an extension for our final payment, explaining our concerns and that we would finalize our payment or cancel following the tariff announcements. She agreed and 4 days after our original final payment date we cancelled based on concerns for our country and increased hostility and threats from trump. She has now refused to refund.

We have spent hours on the phone with VRBO, including one hour on hold to talk to a supervisor. The three VRBO people we spoke to were all polite but none were knowledgeable or helpful and it was a complete waste of time trying to get any support from VRBO. When I questioned the different addresses and different locations, she told me “Maps error”. I asked how can it be a "map error" when I have two different addresses, the host called me directly and was very rude and aggressive on the phone. Even asking me if I thought this was a scam. I hadn't, but then I did.

I still was trying to stay. She said it was necessary to register my vehicle, but it was unclear where to send the info, so I sent it through VRBO, she proceeded to insult me by saying that "Reading is fundamental." Six other people and VRBO CS had read it and could not find it. When I told her I was uneasy about this whole reservation and wanted a refund, she denied it because "she had sent the check-in info."

I contacted VRBO hoping that they would be understanding. Instead, they told me that it was close to the other property and that I should give it a try first. No concern that the address or changed or that they did not have that as the address listed in the reservation. I was on the phone with them for over an hour. They told me that the host would have to give me a refund.

From her text she knew there was an address issue because she pointed it out - (Yes I know, pls FOLLOW THIS ADDRESS). She could have let me know this a long time ago, but waited until the last minute. A classic Bait-and-Switch. She called so there was not a record of the conversation. I am a VRBO host and I've struggled with the platform for years. It's much less customer service focused and organized than AirBnb. For example, on AirBnb as a host I can automatically have the calendar blocked the day before and after a stay when someone books in order to reserve time for cleaning. For VRBO this is a manual process, meaning each time someone books I have to quickly get on and block the days so that someone doesn't book the same day another guest leaves. Though I'm generally quick and available, more than once even a lag of a few hours has caused me to have to ask someone to cancel their reservation, which is bad customer service and causes an inconvenience for both hosts and guests. After suggesting this years ago, VRBO hasn't made that seemingly simple feature available. Even during COVID, when we took extra time to clean between stays, VRBO did not have this as an option.

Another challenge with VRBO is contacting support. When I've tried to chat with an agent through the host portal they've connected me to the guest portal and told me they could not help me and connect me to host support, instructing me to do the same thing I did to connect to the current conversation. My reason for reaching out to support is because I noticed they're advertising our property rated below the floor of our nightly rate, meaning we're getting bookings with less of a payout than is worth for us to clean the rental. I appreciate the idea of listing our property on both AirBnb and VRBO, but I've thought more than once about taking down the option for VRBO as they do not seem to be interested in customer service or in improving their platform.

Hosts BEWARE! If you have an integration software and you also build a website to take direct bookings, VRBO will STEAL 10% commission from your own direct bookings. It won't matter if you paid a company to integrate the platforms and build your own site, you will still have to pay VRBO 10% of any "offline bookings", aka "off platforms bookings". I'm talking about paying my own money to advertise my own website, yet I will have to pay VRBO 10%. You know, just cause they want to take from my pockets. I am now removing all my listings from VRBO. Disgusting behaviour VRBO, shame on you. For those who don't think this could possibly be true, please call them and ask.

I have had the worst experience with VRBO. After booking a place to stay in Puerta Vallarta, I contacted the host to ask a couple questions. They informed me that the pricing listed was outdated and it would cost me additional money to stay there. I immediately canceled the reservation within minutes of booking. I was well within the timeframe to receive a full refund. It has been 4 weeks, after multiple phone calls to customer service, hours wasted on the phone, and still no refund. I’m being told there is a problem with the system and they are working on it. I’m extremely frustrated and will never use this company again.

I’m writing this review to warn others about a scam listing on VRBO. The listing for Beach Mansion appeared legitimate, but it turned out to be a complete scam. We rented this property for 7 nights, but on day 5, we were kicked out in the middle of the night because the owner was not authorized to rent the property for short-term vacations. The property was located in a private gated community, which, since 2023, has prohibited short-term rentals. The owner was aware of this but still went ahead with the listing. The community seized the property not allowing us or the owner to come through the gates.

We were forced to rush out in the middle of the night, leaving hundreds of dollars worth of food and personal items behind, as we didn’t have time to properly pack. The "owner" became completely unresponsive after we left. That same night, we had to find a hotel for 6 people at our own expense. I reported the incident to VRBO, but their customer support was unhelpful and unresponsive. They refused to take responsibility or offer adequate compensation, citing that we didn't call immediately.

As a platform, VRBO has a responsibility to protect its users from fraudulent activities. Under their "Book with Confidence Guarantee," they failed miserably in this case. Advice to Others: Be extremely cautious when booking through VRBO. Thoroughly research the listing and owner before making a payment. Don’t rely solely on VRBO's verification processes. I hope VRBO takes this issue seriously and improves their fraud detection systems and customer support to prevent others from going through a similar experience.

After booking with VRBO 16 days before my visit, which was confirmed by the host... the day before my stay I received a message from the host stating VRBO overbooked. I received my refund from the HOST upon our return, but VRBO said this was not their fault... repeatedly and the original host failed to help me and kept saying it was not their fault and speaking with a supervisor would not help with the situation. After being on the line with the Supervisor "Tricia" she attempted to find me a place to stay but was unable to for 2 HOURS... I was on the phone... Supervisor agreed to comp my stay but was having technical issues with their one key cash.. She told me several times that I could book a room myself somewhere else and they would refund... I told her I booked the room somewhere else since I was tired of being on the line and was very frustrated...

After booking she sent me an email to submit my receipts and bank statement for reimbursement... After submitting I received an email saying no one was monitoring that email??? I called and was on the phone again for 30 minutes while the case was "escalated". 4 hours later I received an email saying because I didn't book through one of their other sites I was not eligible for a refund...

Why would I book another room with a site that already screwed up my first reservation? Called back another time and was on the line for 30 mins... By this time my attitude had already changed to anger... Once again I was apologetic and thankful to the new supervisor who "helped me" or said she would... Still waiting on a call or email with them saying they are going to keep their word... Pretty sure it won't come. NEVER BOOK WITH VRBO because their customer service is trash and they clearly have a not our fault attitude! AirBnb will be my new go to when booking moving forward.

VRBO, it's time for some honest feedback. I don’t typically write reviews like this, but this situation demands a response. This is not merely a case of high pricing—it's outright exploitation, and VRBO is letting it happen. As a resident of this community with extensive knowledge of the local market, I find the current listings appalling. We own property on the water, and I would never even consider charging the outrageous prices I’m seeing here. I’m not alone in this belief. I live among developers who have built some of the most luxurious communities in the country—homes worth $50 million, not just the typical “million-dollar” properties. These professionals understand real estate and would never resort to such blatant price-gouging. No fair-minded person would.

Yet here we are, with VRBO facilitating listings that are not only overpriced but also predatory. We're talking about homes located miles from the beach that are asking for $14,000 to $15,000 a month. Are you serious? These are not five-star resorts; this isn't Florence. Some of these places barely qualify as livable, and the pricing is utterly unacceptable. I downloaded this app in good faith, trusting in the platform's integrity. After being repeatedly prompted for feedback, I must ask: VRBO, when will you take action? You are not simply a neutral marketplace. By allowing this unchecked greed to persist, you become complicit. It's time for you to step up.

I have had a terrible experience with VRBO, that people should be award of. The details are below, but the bottom line is that VRBO has partners (referred to as its "VRBO family"), that have listings on the VRBO platform but that seemingly operate separate from VRBO. If you have a problem with one of those bookings, which I had for a listing in Paris, you are basically on your own and have to deal with the respective host directly.

Furthermore, the VRBO website is not transparent. I could not find information on the website of how much I had originally paid, nor how much had been refunded when I received a cancellation notice. This is juxtaposed with my experience with Airbnb, where refunds are automatic and all information on all transactions are sent by email and available on the website. Finally, when I tried to lodge a complaint about the Paris listing on the website (which included misinformation and was the reason for my cancellation), VRBO displayed no interest whatsoever. The details of what transpired follow.

On Feb. 2, I made a booking in Paris on the VRBO website whose stated policy was "100% refund of amount payable if you cancel by Feb 11, 2025." When I cancelled on Feb. 4, I got a message from the host indicating that the booking could not be cancelled. After a number of ambiguous communications with the host who would not confirm the refund policy, I phoned VRBO customer services. In turn, the VRBO rep spoke to the host and got got the same message as I did, that is, that the host was coordinating with the higher team on the matter. As I found the situation highly stressful and could not get a straight answer from the host, I contacted VRBO again later in the day. VRBO's response was that I should contact the host directly and wait for a response.

Today, 24 hours later, I received an email from the host that my reservation was canceled and the following message: "Your refund is based on the property’s cancellation policy. If you have any questions about your refund, please try contacting the host before calling your customer service" and was directed to the VRBO website. I checked the website and there is no information on how much was paid, how much was refunded -- nothing -- simply that the reservation was canceled. I subsequently messaged the host and am awaiting a response. As I told both VRBO reps, I cannot believe that VRBO operates its business in this manner, and even more stunned that it has the gall to say "Book with Confidence."

My Awful Experience with VRBO: A Cautionary Tale. I’ve always believed in giving businesses a fair chance, but after not one, but two terrible experiences with VRBO, I feel obligated to share my story and warn others about their practices. I will never do business with this company again. The first incident happened on January 3rd. I booked a house through VRBO that was advertised as a dream vacation rental with a hot tub, BBQ, and screened porch. It seemed perfect—on paper. But when I arrived, I quickly realized all of those amenities were not on my side of the house at all. The property was set up like a duplex, and the owners lived next door.

All of the "dream amenities" were actually on their side of the property, not mine. To make matters worse, I was expected to share these amenities with the owners of the house. I mean, what?! I couldn’t believe the audacity. The entire listing was blatantly misleading, and the house itself felt dark, uninviting, and prison-like. I couldn’t stay there. Despite the false advertising, VRBO refused to help. They claimed it was up to the host to issue a refund—after the host was already insulted by my valid complaints and refusal to stay in their misleading rental. How is that acceptable?

Fast forward to yesterday, when I booked a houseboat through VRBO. I thought maybe this time it would be different. When I arrived at my scheduled check-in time, the host didn’t show up. I waited for hours without any contact. Frustrated and with nowhere to stay, I finally booked a hotel and moved on. Then, 4 hours after my check-in time—and long after I had already left—the host finally called me, saying the boat was now available. By then, it was too late—I had already made other arrangements. Now, the host and VRBO are trying to twist the situation, acting like I just didn’t show up or refused the rental, which is far from the truth.

What’s even worse is how VRBO handles these situations. They’ll pretend they’re doing something to help, but in reality, it’s just a constant runaround. You’ll get routed from one person to the next, each saying the same unhelpful things. It’s a smoke-and-mirrors act that never leads to real solutions. The root issue is VRBO’s policy of putting all responsibility on the host while the platform takes zero accountability. As a platform, VRBO should step in when things go wrong, especially when hosts are dishonest or fail to deliver what was promised. Instead, they wash their hands of it, leaving customers like me to fend for ourselves. If you’re considering booking through VRBO, think twice. Their lack of accountability, refusal to take responsibility, and endless runaround show they don’t care about their customers. I’ve had enough, and I will never rent through VRBO again.

Vrbo gave me a credit to use on another rental--as if I would ever stay in another Vrbo rental. The owner did not refund 50% as he said he would. There is virtually no recourse if you rent an uninhabitable room/house/apartment so once you pay, you will not see your money again, no matter what the state of the rental.

The house looked homemade inside as "repairs" and "updates" were clearly not done by anyone who knows what they're doing. There was hair all over the floor, and a large puddle of water in the kitchen. The cord to the stove's homemade light set up consisted of 2 different cords wire nutted together and there was mold on the outlet. The front door didn't shut tightly and there was evidence of rodents in the house, asking with gum stuck to the AC unit which was loosely mounted through the wall with no trim and air free flowing from outside.

If I could give zero stars I would. First, I will speak as a host, then as someone who as a travel RN has pursued VRBO for potential rentals, but has not and will never book. As an owner who luckily has this far has thankfully had 99% of my guests book on AirBnb. Airbnb is easy to navigate, control rates, block nights, etc. VRBO could not be any further from that. This difficulty may have been tolerable until this month when it has cost me money. For my particular property, this is peak season. My place is already reasonably priced and I do not give discounts at this time of the year nor do I need to. I did not have auto book on for VRBO and expressly went on The site in the fall to ensure there were no weekly or monthly discounts.

I had two bookings in January. I noticed that my payout was less than it should’ve been and less than it would’ve been for a week on Airbnb. Only today did I notice, that despite my wishes, despite me going on and removing any discounts that VRBO had decided to add, they gave my guest 10% discounts during peak season which has cost me hundreds of dollars. Last week I went on to block dates as I have guests coming through VRBO until the end of January and did not want to remove my listing until after that. I am a seasoned host, but had to call VRBO to figure out how to block dates, because when you go to your calendar and try to block dates, which I’ve done in the past, it would not allow me to block dates.

When I called, there was a whole other process that I had to go through and be directed by to block dates. This and I’m just deciding to give my guest 10% discount during peak season and their giant fees that they take for themselves, I will no longer be VRBO and will be suggesting that others do not. Now, as a potential renter, since I am a travel, nurse and get temporary housing for my assignments. For years, I have looked at Airbnb and other sites as well as VRBO. VRBO’s prices are extremely elevated as compared to comparable housing on other sites.

It has been for years as I’ve been travel nursing for nine years, that this has been the case. So, definitely if you’re hosting, beware. Because even if you don’t have auto book on, don’t have auto price, and even if you go in and set your own discount or lack of discounts, it is not guaranteed that that will be honored. I will not be using this platform for any reason again and just really caution, others who might.

Terrible experience. We got to our rental property at the checkout time. I had not received any responses to my request for the check-in information. I contacted VRBO who tried to get in touch with the host, the host did not respond to VRBO either. VRBO at that point did a good job of customer service offering me a hotel for the night paid for by VRBO. Kudos to them for that. However when I went to go and write a review of The Host the system would not allow me to do that because I hadn't actually stayed in the property. According to their guidelines you cannot write a review unless you stay in the property. So I was not allowed to post a review of the host indicating how terrible that experience was not having a place to stay when my reservation had been accepted. This whole thing made VRBO a terrible system to deal with.

We had an unpleasant experience with two of Vrbo hosts. One declined our booking without any explanation, and when we inquired, we were informed they reserved the condo at another platform; days after, their condo was still advertising on Vrbo as available!!!!!! We attempted another host only to have even worse experience - this time, host advertised by Vrbo canceled the first day of our reservation and proceeded to charge us for the two remained days without ever communicating with us.

When we canceled our reservation, we had to pay bank exchange rate due to this host's lack of decency to communicate with either VRBO or us before processing our card. We lost any confidence in booking through VRBO and made our reservation directly with another property for even better deal. Customer service at VRBO asked us to pursue the money we lost with the host and ignored our request for clarification with their management. Many customer service agents are difficult to understand due to the second language barrier.

This experience was nothing short of a nightmare. The company completely failed to protect us as customers and ignored serious safety concerns. We rented a cabin through VRBO, and upon arriving at night, discovered that:

The front door was unlocked, and a candle was burning inside.
None of the wall light switches worked, leaving us in the dark except for the candle.

The sliding back door had no lock or way to secure it from the outside.

Feeling unsafe, we immediately left the property, as it seemed like someone could still be inside or nearby. Without cell service, we had to drive down the mountain to try to reach the host. Despite numerous calls and emails, the host did not respond. We contacted VRBO for help, but their response was just as inadequate. They told us to return to the cabin and take photos if we wanted a refund—completely disregarding the fact that this was after dark and extremely unsafe, especially for two women traveling alone. Only after we threatened to involve the police did the host respond, promising a refund. However, they never issued it.

VRBO has been no help at all. Despite informing them that this property is unsafe and requesting its removal from the platform, the listing remains active. To make matters worse, our credit card dispute was denied, leaving us with no recourse. This situation has been a complete disaster. VRBO’s lack of accountability and disregard for customer safety makes it clear they cannot be trusted. If you value your safety and your money, stay far away from this company. After 24 hours of waiting, the owner did not respond and my booking was disappeared. I called Vrbo customer service to cancel the booking and for the refund. Imagine you've spent hours scouring the various listings to find the perfect vacation home for your upcoming epic group trip with family. You've looked at every detail, so many properties, but you found just the right one. You click the button. You make the reservation. The payment is made. The owner accepts the booking. Life is good. All you have to do now is book your experiences/excursions. Good times ahead! Until....the host/property owner decides to cancel your booking without warning somewhere between the day you booked it and the day you are supposed to check-in. That sinking feeling you get when you see the email in your inbox that there has been a VRBO refund. What?! Did I accidentally cancel it somehow? This can't be true.

Log into VRBO and sure enough, it is. Still unclear what happened, initiate chat with customer service where I'm told the owner simply canceled the booking. Now I initially thought VRBO was meh to ok with the customer service on this as they gave a $30 (not earth shattering or remotely compensating for the trouble, but something) OneKey credit. Silly me didn't realize said credit is just a token gesture and expires within 2 weeks. Great. I had already booked another property in my panic and the silly policy only allows OneKey cash to be used at the time of booking. So, I have essentially received nothing for the roller coaster experience. When I contacted VRBO yet again, the response was simply there is nothing we can do and lots of referring me to the fine print.

Ten days after I received my booking and paid for my reservation, the owner canceled on me, giving a terrible excuse that the price was incorrect (€682 for 4 nights was what they charged me). So apparently VRBO owners can change prices at will, after collecting their payment, leaving their paying customers out in the cold with no place to stay. It’s not safe not knowing if your booking is honored or legitimate. Documentation is attached. I called customer service and they said they can refund what I paid but not the foreign transaction fee. Then they encouraged me to book another property from them. I chose to use a legitimate booking service instead.

DO NOT USE VRBO. I WANT TO LEAVE ZERO STARS but I can't ;(. I have tried to review this experience on VRBOs site and on the property that I rented but I was limited to what I could say and no pictures as evidence of my claims. VRBO has given us the run around and just quotes their cancelation policy, we are lost and out of pocket $5700. Please read our experience and it might save you. My husband and two friends rented what was advertised as a beautiful Cliffhouse Big Island in Ookala, Hawaii. When we arrived we found cockroaches and rodent droppings all over the house. And a filthy house with stains on furniture, walls, windows and Cobbwebs everywhere. As well as bugs in the fridge and mold in the showers. The photos that were advertised for this home were nothing like the rundown dirty home we arrived at.

We made the decision it would be a health risk and definitely not what we paid $5700 CDN for, took a bunch of photos as evidence and left 45 minutes after we arrived. Surely VRBO would be just as surprised and upset as we were and would refund our money right? NO THEY DIDN'T. Instead my husband and I have been back and forth with them, having them call it all minor and they haven’t done a thing but offer us $300 back. We feel robbed by and disappointed in VRBO. Anyone else who has seen our photos is shocked and can’t believe it either. We struggled to find additional accommodations and were out more money to stay the week. AGAIN DO NOT USE VRBO. They don’t appreciate their customers or stand up for them. They also clearly don’t make sure the homes advertised are what they say they are. DO NOT RENT FROM VRBO and tell your friends and family so they are not robbed like we have been.

We have even tried to reach out to the homeowner and he won't budge and even had the audacity to say terrible untrue things about me on my review I left on his property. Such a mess and a financial burden on us honestly $5700. VISA is trying to help us out and recover our money but it shouldn't be that hard if VRBO took a serious look at our pictures and listened to out experience. If you are even thinking of booking with them be sure you are prepared to lose money.

Specifically I am talking about the The Haas, Trademark Collection by Wyndham Hotel in Los Angeles. NEVER STAY THERE. I was traveling alone and booked a hotel for five nights in downtown Los Angeles. When I arrived there were homeless, drugged and unconscious people on the sidewalk in front of the front door of the hotel. In order to press the hotel doorbell, I needed to walk over an (unconscious?) male body that was laying across the front door of the hotel. So obviously I could not stay at this hotel for the remaining stay. Where would I walk to get dinner?

I stayed that night because I had no choice, and left the next morning. I have spent the last five weeks trying to get a refund from VRBO and EXPEDIA. I have called VRBO five times, called Expedia three times. I have two case numbers. I have spent 8 hours on the phone. I have used multiple virtual assistants. More often than not I am being hung up on, or "promised to be called back" and never hear from them. I paid $760 for a hotel I did not use. As a mother trying to put two sons through college, this money matters to me. I will NEVER use Expedia or VRBO again. They are abusive, and show complete disregard for their clients. Obviously, we was trying to find a solution, when we receive an automatic booking, we cancel that petition, practically immediately, the window that was pop-up at the moment of select the reason of the cancelation, was ONLY "YOU WOULD HAVE A FEE DEPENDING OF THE REASON OF YOU CANCELATION". We select "damage in the property". There not was any amount showing up about the fee (penalty to us). Of course, we didn't know if would have a sanction or not... That issue was on Nov 1st 2024.

Every year my husband and I plan our annual trip to visit Raleigh in April. Because we have been doing this for several years, we know and understand that the rentals go fast if you do not book early. This year, we decided to plan ahead and started looking for a place to stay earlier because we thought this might be our last time and we wanted to make it extra special. When we came across Valerie Schwartz's "Professional 2bd Condo Near Downtown Raleigh" we thought it was perfect. It was right on the edge of our budget but it was exactly what we were looking for as far as location and comfort. We were so excited. That was on November 7th. We did not worry about it because we paid in full and received a confirmation.

Fast forward to Sunday, December 9th. I received a message from the host stating that the location was no longer available because her calendars were not syncing. I followed up immediately, assuming that this was a mistake and since we had already paid a full month ago and never heard anything. I knew that if we did not resolve this issue soon, that most properties would become unavailable so I was anxiously awaiting a response from my host but she did not respond until yesterday, December 11th, stating that she was hosting long term tenants that would be occupying this space until May. I knew I needed to act fast and that is when I contacted VRBO.

There are several issues with this whole situation-- why was the condo showing as available on VRBO when it was not? Why did it take over a month for the host to get in touch with me to let me know it was occupied (if this was done earlier, we would not be running into this issue of no similar places available)? Why is the host not responding immediately, especially considering there is an issue with the reservation? And why is VRBO just letting all of this happen?

Since we have received this horrible news, we have been told that the place is no longer available but still have not received a refund; which means that our funds are tied up, making it nearly impossible for us to reserve another place (right around the holidays which we were trying to avoid in the 1st place). Even if we were able to go ahead and reserve another place, there are virtually NO OPTIONS because of the timing. All of the VERY limited options that are still out there for the dates are not conveniently located or extremely overpriced for the place of stay.

To my husband and myself, this is causing a lot of stress and now we are put in a situation we tried to avoid in the 1st place. We are reaping the repercussions for something that could have been avoided a month ago and that we have no control over. Not to mention, we still do not have a place to stay during our annual trip! Now, there are limited options that have risen in cost in the past week (but really there are no options in the area in which we have previously reserved)!

Because of this situation and these reasons, we asked for a full, immediate refund plus $500 to cover the cost for another place at such an inconvenient time. Because of this, and the lack of options, we requested that VRBO help us find another place to stay during this time, that is in the same location, even if it means providing us with a hotel.

This whole situation could have been avoided and is adding extra, unwarranted stress to us and our family around the holidays. We asked VRBO to help us resolve this situation but the only thing that they did was refund us the money that we paid for and would have received considering the host was double booked and cancelled our reservation a month after we had booked. They are not trying to resolve the situation any further. They also stated that Valerie's listing would be terminated but when I go back into VRBO, the rental is still on there. This is infuriating and very inconvenient. I will never be using their services again!

Do not use them. We were Premiere Hosts for a very long time and preferred their genuine customer service over the other guys for many years. Once they were purchased by Expedia they were horrible to deal with and what others say is factually accurate. As a host they blocked our site as a result of their error and cost us thousands of dollars in lost bookings. It took weeks to solve an issue that should have been instantaneous and we repeatedly had to send them the same documentation. It’s sad and unfortunate what has become of this company which once had the best customer service for both owners and sellers.

I am unable to cancel my reservation on either platform, even though I made the booking through Expedia. Expedia keeps redirecting me to Vrbo, and Vrbo sends me back to Expedia—neither is able to resolve the issue. Neither systems will allow me to cancel online. This platform is a complete mess. I strongly advise against booking anything other than hotels on Expedia, and I would never consider hosting or renting a property through Vrbo. What an incredibly disorganized experience.

Two out of two of my hosts canceled on me within the same week. One because they had a concern they weren’t sure would be fixed by the time we came. Okay, no worries. It happens. The other (A brand new host) says they don’t understand why it was set up and tried to cancel their listing. Each asked me to cancel thankfully prior to the refund (by days) but I’m wondering if there’s scammers setting up false establishments to gain money. Finally I called Vrbo direct and waited online 6-8 minutes before they hung up the line. This was a horrible first experience trying to make the change over from Airbnb.

If you are a Host then don't even waste your time with VRBO. I get 96% of my rentals from the other guys. I actually cancelled using their site because it was a pain to always have to go to them and block off dates for bookings I got from other site. Then has a renter that said he's heard from people that say it's 50/50. I find that really hard to believe but ok. So I turned it back on. Then took a good sized booking from VRBO and was like cool. But I spaced my wife's birthday. VRBO said that's unacceptable and wants to charge me $350 cancellation fee. I'm sorry but no. I had contacted the renter and totally apologized for my mistake, and I was also bummed about losing the booking (2k+). I was upset about that but then get informed I'll be charged a $350 fee because I cancelled the booking. Tried calling VRBO and sorry Craig. OK, delete my account, which I had done prior just because poor results compared to other guys.

I'm sorry but obviously they think they're king poo. Bottom line, I won't lose 1 night of sleep over deleting them. They are 5% of my rentals at best. They obviously aren't very smart business owners. How much will they lose from not having me long term. Hella more than $350. I ran a multi-mil company of my own. That's just dumb math. Anyways, adios to them. Also something else that has hit we while dealing with this. The type of renters I got from VRBO were all kinda jerks. Not saying that to just put them down, but that IS the reality of it. It won't even phase me, nor my gross not being on their site. Like I said prior. I shut them off before because I wasn't getting anything. Is what it is.

The next day the friend we were celebrating got into an accident and we had to cancel the trip, but since the policy was 7 days prior, it should not have been an issue. I tried for 48 hours to cancel, but the status was pending so I could not do anything. Then 7 days prior, it was accepted and charged $950. I reached out to the owner, who was very nice and said they needed to speak with a vrbo admin, this took over a week. Then I was granted a refund of half the room night ($250), not the $350 cleaning fee or any service charges. Obviously no one cleaned, as we did not stay. My frustration was the 48 hours, I would have cancelled on time, but did not have the option.

After booking, the property owner made very unusual requirements that were not divulged in the property listing. She sent her own contract, with ridiculous additional charges and rules. We refused to sign the contract and requested cancellation, citing the lack of disclosure of these rules at time of booking. She refuses. VRBO has also refused. Even though she is adding things to the original VRBO agreement, VRBO backed the homeowner instead of the customer. I highly recommend not using VRBO and booking direct instead. Terrible customer service. We stayed at a big house with 4 rooms for a weekend concert. We were in and out of the house multiple times and everything worked great. Then when we got home from the concert, the keypad had some sort of malfunction and would not work even though we put in the proper code number. We got home around 1:30 am and were standing outside the house in the cold. We tried calling the homeowner, contact over 25 times with no answer and every time we called a VRBO agent they constantly put us on hold for so long that the line would die and we would have to call and restart the whole process.

One agent specifically said, "Would you like to book a hotel room and we reimburse you, or would you like me to book a hotel for you?" Because the line kept dying, we were finally able to find a hotel that had rooms available. We booked 4 rooms because that's what our requirements were for the home. Each room was over $250 for the night.

VRBO has offered to cover only a portion of our original payment for the weekend stay, and then has offered a $150 refund for the hotel costs which came to over $1,000 in total. It is a slap in the face that they were so unhelpful in our time of need, and they aren't even trying to right their wrongs by simply covering the cost of our hotel expenses.

Buyer beware. I booked a VRBO home called Sky Sunset Stay. The property id # 3535696. When on the site there is a Book Now button and under that it states "You will not be charged yet". However here is issue #1, I was charged on my credit card the full amount immediately. I did not want to pay in full upfront (and I have booked several properties on this site where I could pay half up front and half 1 month before my arrival date). Something with this property and the property managers seemed fishy so I cancelled the reservation within 4 hours of the booking.

VRBO credited me the 149.00 service fee immediately but I did not receive the rest of the monies. I called VRBO and was told that the property manager would need to refund me the monies and not VRBO. The property manager then zelled me some of the monies, however I was out 106.47. I then called VRBO AGAIN, they called the property manager who advised that the difference was the 3.5% service fee from the credit card. What !!! the website advised FULL refund if cancelled before a particular date of arrival and I cancelled in less than 24 hours of the booking. The property manager then agreed to refund the additional monies. He then sent some monies via zelle but it was only half of what I was owed. I am still out 53.80 for a booking I cancelled in less than 24 hours.

I have been on the phone with VRBO more than 5 times in the last 2 weeks. I have sent them copies of the debits and credits and they keep sending me emails requesting this information. When I call them, Customer service says they see everything and just ignore the emails. This is terrible service. Today they advised me this house is on their site but managed by a third party !! And that basically I'm on my own. NEVER BOOK this house and be very very careful if you book on VRBO.

We showed up and called the owner of the property telling him it was left disgusting and unsanitary. He responded he was sorry but then he didn't get cleaners out there until the 3 day we were there. So we had to buy cleaning supplies the first day to do all the cleaning ourselves. We had $400 in out of pocket cleaning products including Shop-Vac and mops and paper towels and disinfected wipes.

Pool cleaners showed up on the 3rd day and told us that the pool we had been swimming in for the 2 previous days didn't have a filtering system or pump that worked. And they haven't been out to clean the pool in a month so we were swimming in a unsanitary disgusting pool! We reached out to VRBO and sent in 30 plus pictures and videos of this disgusting property. We also let them know the back doors don't lock so we were staying a property that wasn't safe or secure for our multiple families. Every staff member apologize and said they would never have been able to stay there and they would work to get us refunded.

Today marks 6 weeks since we stayed at that property and VRBO contacted us and said they can't give us any type of reimbursement for cleaning supplies or refund for stay due to cleanliness???? Which is absolutely horrible!!! We will be filing legal actions and just submitted all pictures and videos and correspondence from VRBO to the health department! As our trip was the next day, VRBO offered self-rebooking, which supposedly compensates you up to 150% of the price of your rebooked rental. They emailed us the details and it said you had to rebook on their site (which we were at this point hesitant to do) or through several aggregators including Hotels.com. Since we had familiarity with Booking.com we asked "on a recorded line" whether we could use it; we were assured that yes, since the companies are sister companies, it was fine.

Hours of phone and emails later to get the 50% refund (of the 150%/ 100% was sent back), including several times where we were promised calls back within 24 hours and "escalations to the highest levels", and the final result from VRBO was essentially "sorry, it doesn't conform to our policies, and we will not respond further". We felt we were lied to on multiple occasions and VRBO should train its employees better: we have everything documented. It was a bait-and-switch experience and not worth the final price. VRBO has excellent customer service people, but the platform is a letdown. The price you are enticed with is NOT the price you will pay to book the place. So instead of paying $112 a night, you will pay $339 a night which is way more than a hotel. Also there is no guarantee that you will get what you pay for.

The hot tub was 95 degrees after we waited 24 hours for it to heat up because it was not ready for us when we came, the pellet wood stove ran out of pellets within 1 hour of use and my spouse had to retrieve more from their overfilled barn, the bed on the main floor was too high for our grandmother to get in, and so we lifted her in, but when she got up to use the restroom in the night, she couldn't get back in, the sofa in the living room was horrible and you slid off, the upstairs bed sank in the middle.

VRBO doesn't stand behind their hosts so your experience is not guaranteed. If you go to a hotel, you pay less and you get a guarantee. VRBO does not offer you a copy of the receipt, address and needed information to check-in. They will only send it to the person who pays even if they are 88 years old and are not capable of forwarding the information.

There will be extra fees, and this is VRBO offering this option to their hosts. There is a fee for any person other than two even if there is more bedrooms, there is a fee for cleaning, there is a fee for the host - I thought that is what the rental fee was, there is fee for a service dog, there is a fee for VRBO. For whatever reason, VRBO is NOT the platform it used to be and I will never use them again.

Ok, but I had a second book weeks later, and while it says on their website I could expect to be paid one business day after the guest checks in, it is now 5 days later and I have not gotten paid. I spoke with two supervisors, one who stated "a risk assessment took 30 days to be completed"--as a reason why I didn't get paid for guest #2?--and the second supervisor merely said since the second guests arrival "coincided" with the date the first they would be paying me for both on October 23rd.

No payment has been made to me as of this date, and nothing in my account says any money is being disbursed. I spoke to two CSRs today who both then had me on hold for 10 minutes each without returning to the call or letting me know if a supervisor was getting on. I have been an avid user of Expedia in the past 6-7 years. I booked stays on Expedia for a trip coming up soon and it directed me to VRBO. As I have used AirBnB in the past, I figured it was the same. I booked 2 months in advance for my trip. 3 days before I was slated to leave for my 16 day trip, they cancelled my reservation. The VRBO owner stated that VRBO cancelled due to an unsafe living environment because of fire extinguisher issues. This was an amazing villa and we were excited. VRBO refunded me the money but this did not solve the problem I was about to have.

Their customer service (Manar being the associate on the phone with me) tried her best to find me another place but for my asks and what we had booked, seemed like there wasn't anything that met our expectations as a family of 4. I had to push her hard to get me on the phone with her Supervisor - Menna. She said that they will open up an investigation and it will be resolved in the next 3 days.

I was leaving in 3 days! I then asked her, if the investigation did not solve my problem and they could not find a place that we were happy with, what then? She essentially agreed with me that I would be stuck without a place. I just said thank you to her and said I will look elsewhere then. No effort in trying to provide great customer service.

Now this isn't a comment on Menna or Manar - I know they were just trying to do their jobs but speaks volumes as to the lack of care VRBO/Expedia has for keeping your business. I am now scrambling to find a hotel instead so this does not happen to us. For such a large organization, how could you tell me 3 days before I am leaving, that my stay is cancelled. I am going to use Google from now on for my trips or Airbnb.

Working with VRBO has been a miserable experience. I booked a stay for Monterey Car Week for August and right before my trip the host canceled my stay saying the place wasn't available. In order to rebook the same type of accommodations it was going to cost me 5X as much since it was right before Monterey Car Week. So I contacted VRBO due to their Book with Confidence program. They said they were going to have the host refund my money and then they would help me. Then after they had the host finalize the cancellation, they said now that he canceled I can't do the Book with Confidence program (even though I qualified based on everything it said on their website). They said I can rebook and they will give me the following:

    Computation for Self Relocation Process
Allocated budget - original booking amount = Reimbursement amount

    $5482.00 - $2,741.00 = $2,741.00

So I rebooked on their platform for the $5500 expecting to receive the reimbursement amount promised. 2 months later I received $1000, no calls or answers from anyone in the two months I waited. And still no one will reach out to me. How this is even legal for them to do I don't even know. So now I am out an extra $1700 that I would not have spent. They are the absolute worst company.

They said if you can get the customer to remove their review by calling, they would not even post it. The customer was willing to take their time to remove the review and VRBO assured me it wouldn’t be posted. They posted it anyway. Then when we called back, they said they removed it, but it wasn’t removed.

I have made six phone calls about this since I did everything they asked me to do, And when I asked for a supervisor, Jordan, He said the same things they had told me before and when I said “why couldn’t you just do it right now” he told me he wasn’t gonna help me and hung up on me. This is only one of the many things VRBO has done wrong to us. Their system is super glitchy, and It has caused double booking. Please use Airbnb instead. I manage a vacation property. I listed it on another rental site and the owner asked me to list on Vrbo. The process was not user friendly and rather frustrating but I got it done. After some days, I had several new bookings with the other side and none from Vrbo. I checked the listing; it was active. Everything looked to be in place. When I searched for the property from the traveler's side of the site it did not come up. I did a very specific search using days I knew were available. It did not show up. It was as if the property did not exist. The actual location on the map was blank.

I attempted to use the live chat to get help. That was a fail. The wait time was over an hour. Eventually, I did contact a human, or an Ok AI. They very slowly and tediously asked me to verify all my information. Then they were not helpful. If left the chat and called on the phone. That wait time was excessively long with bad hold music. I gave up. The next day, the site was searchable.

Several days later I got the first booking. In reviewing that, I noticed that the prices were listed lower than they should have been. I thought I was using a smart price system like the other rental site employs. The peak season days were listing at $269 when they should have been over $400. As I was looking for how to change the settings, the Market Maker function was officered; apparently, this is the real smart pricing piece so I selected to activate that. It let me know that it wouldn't take effect for 48 hours. I attempted to go in and change the pricing that needed to be changed manually but the system would not let me.

I called the support line again. Again, very long wait times and little help at the end. The person I spoke with didn't really know the solution and by that time I was out of time. I ended up just hiding the listing for 48 hours. I have one guest through Vrbo and will never use them again. Not only are they just a bad company their site is not well done. It's clunky and awkward and very user-un-friendly.

This first guest wanted to know why I had not reviews of the property. I let them know that I was new to Vrbo and that we were on another site with reviews. Vrbo won't let the name of another rental site go through it's system. It also won't allow a personal email address go through. I'm sure this is standard but it's stupid. If we want to communicate offline, we will. It just makes them look stingy and miserly. I have absolutely nothing good to say about Vrbo.

She refused to give any kind of refund. When I called Vrbo they said that they couldn’t do anything for me even though they are the ones that I went through. Basically told me sorry for your troubles and even though they agreed it was a misrepresentation of the property they wouldn’t do anything to help. I will never go through them again. We rented a VRBO in Texas for our family reunion in July of 2024. Family was coming from multiple states to stay in the house we rented. We had a confirmed reservation and had paid the full amount of the stay. When the first family member arrived at the rental, there were already people staying there. VRBO DOUBLE-BOOKED THE RENTAL! Family members were coming from Georgia and multiple cities in Ohio. Some drove in and others flew. There were a total of 12 people staying in the house altogether.

We are now arriving in Texas with nowhere to stay and VRBO was not very helpful. At first, they wanted to give us another VRBO rental, but it was the 4th of July weekend, so there weren't any other openings. Then they gave us an amount to get hotels to stay in. The hotels we could afford on that amount were not clean enough. VRBO increased the hotel amount and we were able to stay in a decent hotel. Since it was a hotel we had to eat out - which we had not planned on. We were going to cook meals to save money since we would be there so long.

It is October and my cousin is still fighting with VRBO to get the full amount of the trip reimbursed to here. I will never, ever, ever use VRBO again after this experience. The total cost of the rental was 3,174.40 and they are trying to give my cousin $900.00 of that. It's ridiculous. Here are the details from the email confirmation they sent. I left off the host's name because I don't believe it's their fault that this happened. VRBO needs to do a better job and not double-book for paying customers.

We attempted to stay near Sedona in Oak Creek Cabin at a place we have previous experience staying with. They are older cabins but have been remodeled. I read the reviews before booking and noticed someone had an issue with one cabin's stench. I thought because the review was old and because the owner responded to the bad review claiming that the tenant had used drugs and left a mess, that the issue had been dealt with. There is NO WAY the owner was unaware of the stench in unit ten. We attempted to air the cabin out and contacted management. It was dark by the time management could come and we had read bad reviews about their open unit.

With some body spray the unit was tolerable. We decided to go to sleep. MISTAKE! The stench picked up in full swing and when we woke up at 2 AM, it was way too late to attempt to do anything about it. Was it pesticides or bad septic, I asked the owner? No response! When we got home, not only did I get sick, but our belongings stunk so bad that loved ones not on the trip gagged and told us we had gone nose blind. We spent the rest of the night cleaning anything we brought into the cabin with us. I called VRBO--. They essentially did nothing. At no time was I notified that I would not be protected by VRBO- that this particular place was a nightmare. The French doors were unlocked upon our arrival, unbeknownst to us, and they were rickety and could be pushed/pulled in.

The unit is a garden apartment style so the French doors were below grade where someone could hide and easily enter. The horse through metal bathtub had a plastic step stool that you had to step up on and then step down into this “tub” that had a moldy shower curtain being held together with duct tape, the bathroom also had a lot of peeling paint, again not very safe. First, I am the CEO of a company and I travel all over the US for work, and the world. I am not an idiot. I know how to book travel. I've used Vrbo once several years ago and no issue. I frequently use Airbnb and we have NEVER had an issue. This experience however, with Vrbo, is both shocking and disgraceful. Vrbo is a well-known brand. And not a new player. I would never have THOUGHT I NEEDED TO LOOK AT REVIEWS (they are owned by Expedia FFS!!!) before doing business with this company but after this experience, I am now aware of the well over 100,000 1 star reviews on Google Reviews, Trustpilot, Consumer Affairs etc. that have now convinced me that they make a decision every day they go to work, to screw their customers.

The very simple story is this. We booked a house for vacation over Christmas for our family and friends, the nightly amount was listed clearly, we paid the amount and VRBO TOOK OUR PAYMENT. We booked our airfare, rental cars, started looking at lift tickets only to get a message that "the booking meant to have a 10% discount but it was a 100% discount in error." So now we owe $7,500 for a very basic house. First of all, that is NOT TRUE. There was no "discount" anywhere on the listing, just the nightly rate. While the amount looked like a good deal, it was a tad below other homes in the area but there was NOTHING that would have raised a red flag that we were getting something - a VERY BASIC house for $7,500 in SANDPOINT IDAHO.

It looks as if the homeowner is new to Vrbo so likely their mistake. And I understand mistakes happen. But it's how you handle them that makes all the difference and the homeowners response was to lie and Vrbo was right there justifying it and NOT taking care of us in light of the expenses we incurred after booking so we could get airfare as low as possible by booking right away.

My experience with their reps who are very hard to understand was riddled with repeated attempts to justify their unwillingness to protect the customer and then asking me for proof that our card was charged which of course they could see that on the back end. They tried to say that because they refunded us they are off the hook AFTER WE PURCHASED AIRFARE. If the booking is not confirmed then why are they charging our card?

I asked repeatedly to talk with Managers, they refused. One desk after another with people with no authority to DO THE RIGHT THING. None of this is ok. The hundreds of thousands of customers that Vrbo has SCREWED deserve better. Reddit is also full of nightmare stories like ours. Beyond disgusted. DO NOT BOOK VRBO. Read the reviews. You will be stunned.

VRBO is a short-term rental platform serving as a broker between Hosts and Travelers. VRBO collected commissions and placed a guest "Cecilia **" to our property in Dallas. The guest checked in and decided to host an unauthorized party and event on our property despite these activities being prohibited on the VRBO platform and our Rental Agreement. The guest, "Cecilia Ceira" brought unauthorized guests to the house to host an all-night party that was a significant disruption to our neighbors. VRBO was notified and they call the guests to reduce the activities. The guests then proceeded to dispute the charges claiming they did not stay at the residence despite mountains of evidence on the VRBO inbox chatting platform and deducted this money from my checking account. Hosts should never have to bear the brunt of dubious clients/guests that should have been vetted by VRBO.

VRBO staff should review their internal system for information about stays before distracting hosts. I have placed numerous calls to VRBO to have them review their own documentation and refund my money but the staff are so unprofessional and highly incompetent. The guest even texted about forgetting stuff at my house prior to now disputing and filing a chargeback to their credit card. Hosts on VRBO should note that VRBO is only in the business to collect commissions and will not step in. This is very unfair to VRBO hosts. Will be considering my options and do not recommend VRBO to any hosts

Having read through several reviews, I can assure the many disgruntled guests here that VRBO customer service is equally as terrible to hosts. I spent thousands on renovating an apartment after a tenant moved out so I could host on vrbo. When the time came, it seemed relatively easy to set up on their site. I had several bookings logged over just a couple weeks time as the busy season here was approaching. Suddenly vrbo restricted and hid my listing. Unfortunately, there was a state certificate issue. That was my bad. I was unaware the particular certificate was required. That was resolved in ONE DAY. The certificate number was provided as soon as the state approved it, which is immediately upon applying online if your tax records are up to date. They are. That was over two months ago. Property still hidden.

Several hours spent with customer service and countless calls produced nothing. Their favorite term to use is "we will escalate this to the proper team". I have no idea who that team is because hosts are not allowed to contact them directly. I can't believe that there was any issue confirming the validity of the certificate number. When I decided enough was enough and listed on Airbnb, I didn't have to provide it. Why? Because Airbnb easily found it on the state government website. It's public knowledge. Vrbo does not care about their hosts. My impression is that their attitude suggests they make plenty of money with what they have. Judging from what I have read, they have the same attitude toward guests.

My wife has screenshots of both prices, before and after.

I told my wife that it is VRBO that should be concerned and standing up for the customer so she started calling VRBO and spending sometimes over an hour on hold just to be told a supervisor will call her back. Over a six-week period of constant calling, 2 people called my wife back and asked for the screenshots, which gave us hope. But nothing ever come of it and my wife was calling and calling again. We were too late to call our credit card company and stop payment, we just had more faith in VRBO to do the right thing. The very last day before my wife was flying to Gulfport Mississippi to meet up with all the family a fellow from VRBO calls and has my wife again send the screenshots and all the info she collected.

This guy talked and talked and talked and then said that the screenshots could have been manipulated and since it is within 24 hours of staying at the house the rules say that they can’t refund or cancel but he would refund $322 which is the service fee. My wife asked me and I mistakenly said we want all that they have stolen from us and he said, "Take it or leave it." I told him I’m going to get my peace of mind from writing reviews telling the truth about VRBO and the scammer at 119 Ironwood Cove, Pass Christian, MS 39571 on the waterfront in Mississippi. **** I wanted to make sure this is the correct property and SURPRISE SURPRISE it is no longer on VRBO. Man oh man, what a bunch of scammers, VRBO INCLUDED.

The view was great, condo clean and roomy and had all the supplies we needed in the kitchen and bath areas. We will definitely book another stay. The owner was great to answer any questions we had and was available to reach out to us if needed. We loved the great view to have our morning coffee!! It was on the second floor and right next to elevator (no noise) which was very convenient!!

We have used VRBO many times for the last 6 years, with little problem. August this year we booked a home without knowing that no visitors were not allowed on the property at all. A large house with no visitors, not a party, a few elderly visitors. There were also undisclosed security cameras, 3 on the back deck. The owner, obviously watching, texted and said, no visitors, period. Over a week after we had checked out, we received an email stating that a set of twin bedsheets were missing and they were charging our credit card $100. We let them know that the sheets were in the washer. VRBO customer service says we need to wait an see what the owners next step is and we may get a refund. This is insane. To be accused of theft and the owner is able to access our credit card?

VRBO has not yet resolved my issue, and my account remains restricted as of June 2024. I have contacted VRBO more than 10x and have spoken to supervisor after supervisor who research the issue, and who indicate they will get back to me -- however, VRBO has never followed up with me so that this issue can get resolved. Each time I call I am asked to repeat the issue. Unacceptable!

In June a tenant contacted me (the homeowner) directly to cancel their reservation after they had already checked in. As they were unable to cancel the reservation themselves I cancelled the reservation online and then contacted VRBO to indicate I had cancelled for the tenants (and I asked VRBO to provide them their full refund). I was then charged over $1000 for cancelling their reservation. I contacted VRBO to clarify that the tenants had actually needed to cancel, VRBO then contacted the tenants to verify this -- the tenants also wrote an email to VRBO indicating that they in fact requested the cancellation and aske me to do so on their behalf. The point being it was not the homeowner who cancelled. While this situation was being research my account was put on restriction. And it still remains so to this day -- September 7, 2024.

Why am I pursuing this? As a professional courtesy I should be notified why my account is still restricted and importantly told how can I removed the restriction. I have been a VRBO homeowner for over 5 years and I have built up a clientele, with many repeat customers and outstanding reviews. As each day goes by and my account remains restricted revenue is lost.

When I reached out to Vrbo to help me with this issue they did not do absolutely anything. By this time the market demand was a lot higher and all similar properties were almost as twice as expensive. Vrbo offered me a very ugly property 20+ miles in another town. I reached out to VRBO and instead of helping me after 5 chats, 2 phone calls VRBO canceled the reservation and refunded the full deposit to the guest. Every time we were told a different story. As an owner, this was a terrible company to work with and had a terribly unfriendly owner experience and website. The company takes a huge cut of the rental and just generally makes the experience of booking guests and using their website a gigantic pain in the **. It really seems like they're more concerned with the people who are renting's experience and making it easy for them that they screw over the owners with fees and all the hoops you have to jump through to have your listing displayed "at the top".

For example, they expect you to have automatic approval and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. So, if you have any logistical things to get through before listing or if you cross list it on AirBnB you will have tons of problems if people double book. Also they will screw you over if you cancel the reservation because VRBO.com takes the renter's money. I have a really hard time thinking of a use case for this platform anymore.

The VRBO owner had cameras not only outside the home but inside and only verified by photos he sent to us. Exterior cameras based on VRBO rules are for safety and not to track the comings and goings of guests. This host tracked and miscounted how many people were in the home and charged us extra fees. He ruined our family time together for our nephew’s wedding with an unacceptable number of calls, emails, texts. This owner was creepy and not an honest person…Renter beware of VRBO and the homeowner. We had a disappointing experience at this property. Upon arrival, we quickly realized that the house was unsuitable for our group. The hall and living area are extremely cramped and can’t accommodate more than 10 people comfortably. The bedrooms are also uncomfortably small; fitting 4 people in each room is unrealistic.

Additionally, the washrooms were not clean, and the lack of paper towels was inconvenient. It seems the property was essentially three separate houses merged into one, with a total of 6 bedrooms but only 2 bathrooms and 1 kitchen. This layout made it even more challenging for our group. We ended up booking another house immediately, which was a significant inconvenience and disrupted our plans. Given the cost of nearly $3,000 for just two nights, this property did not provide value for money. I would not recommend this place for any group larger than 8 or 10 people.

One week before arrival, I contacted the host regarding entrance procedures. I was informed that the property was no longer available and to cancel. I went to cancel the reservation and was informed it was too late for a refund of booking fees. As this was not my fault I expected the company would honor this request. Over several weeks appropriate screenshots and many conversations ensued. Was promised the refund on several occasions but it never appeared. Every phone call resulted in a different agent, requesting information already submitted. The dispute has not been resolved and probably never will.

If I had not contacted this host in advance, my family would have shown up with no place to stay and the total rental amount charged to my credit card. Sound like a scam? Since I would not have canceled in time, more money would be lost. Suggested to VRBO to research hosts more carefully. VRBO customer service agents are polite and tell you what you want to hear. I read the reviews before booking a property in Miami, FL in July. It was a penthouse and cost $2300/night. Many mentioned that the property has not been maintained well and was dirty. I emailed the property manager to ensure that it would be properly cleaned prior to our stay in July. They assured me that all the problems would be taken care of. When we arrived to the house, the floors were dirty, the coasters were dirty, and there was nail polish on the floor. Part of the bathroom ceiling fell on one of my friends. It looked like they had tried to patch the ceiling, but it was not done properly. We turned the AC on and after several hours of the place not cooling down, we realized that the AC was broken. I contacted property management and they told us that nothing can be done until 9AM.

We spent the night in 85 degrees. I asked if they would be able to bring by fans or do something to help us cool down and they said no one would be available until 9AM. This was a health hazard and they did nothing to resolve the issue. By 9:30AM, no one had contacted me and property management kept telling me that they are prioritizing getting the AC fixed and the supervisor will call me as soon as she gets in at 10AM. We ended up leaving the property at 12:30PM and still no one had contacted me or come to repair the AC. We spent 4-5 hours on the phone with VRBO and the property manager.

After hours on the phone with VRBO, they allowed us to self-relocate. They reassured us that we would get a full refund due to all the problems with our VRBO. It has been over a month and they still have not refunded me. Now I have had to pay for the hotel we had to relocate to and the VRBO. I keep sending emails to follow up and they keep telling me that they empathize with me and that I need to be patient and my case has been escalated. August 2 through August 4, I chose this property based upon accommodating 9 people, it appeared to be clean and the reviews were good, however when we got there, that was not the case! The place was not as clean as it appeared, no big deal because I always bring cleaning supplies with me! Well lo and behold when I started in the room my daughter would be sleeping in, I pull back the comforter and the sheets to spray the bed down, I see a huge stain on the mattress but what made the stain stand out it was in an odd spot, it didn’t look like a spill so I google bed bug pictures and it was same stain, So when I saw that I immediately check the other rooms and another room had yellow stains and a blood stain on there.

By now I’m furious and I did not want to stay here but because it was later in evening I couldn’t find a hotel to accommodate 9 people! So some of my family slept on the couch, in the car and we used the other 2 bedrooms that was decent. I contacted the owner that night along with providing him pictures! The next day around 11 am he sent the property manager over, I showed her, the mattress and she said it was coffee, SMH I couldn’t believe this woman would insult my intelligence!

To make a long story short once the manager look at everything she reported everything to the owner, he text me at noon, and stated he will refund me a night if I check out by 2pm, as I explain to him, that’s not possible due to the fact there are 9 of us, we already had plans for the remaining of the day and we were leaving very early the next morning! He never responded to my text! I had to text him the next morning regarding the situation and he never accommodated me and my family for being inconvenienced! Our guest said it said session ended and would not let them leave one. I contacted customer service for support in hopes that they could reopen the link by sending to the email they used to book. After 30 minutes of being on hold numerous times they had the audacity to see if I could have them call. Embarrassing and unprofessional at the least. We do have our second guest stay coming up, so fingers crossed we can actually receive the review we deserve.

We previously had a listing on VRBO before they were bought out and it was great. We recently listed a new vacation rental. The VRBO calendar wouldn't sync with other vacation rental calendars, causing a double booking. VRBO fined us $50 for their error and put us on a restricted status listing due to their error. We tried contacting customer service by phone and online chat four times. Got hung up on all four times and we were not rude at all, just trying to solve the problem. They don't actually have customer service. It is all AI customer service.

We talked to an over-seas person one time. We could heard loud background noise and were eventually told that they were having technical difficulties and to call back in a couple hours. We are now removing our listing from VRBO. We don't have time for this. There are more reliable options for booking a vacation rental such as Airbnb Don’t choose Booking.com or HomeAway. That’s who bought out VRBO and ruined it.

Called several days ago with Question about my rental website. The person I spoke with did not seem to know anything and kept asking if she could put me on a brief hold. I gave her my property I.D. And it took her ten minutes to find my property. When I asked the question I had called about she once again put me on a brief hold which lasted about two minutes. At the twenty minute mark I got disconnected and she never called back even though she confirmed my phone number. Premium hosts are supposed to have premium support. Their customer support is a joke. It used to be very good but is worthless now.

VRBO has not refunded me for a house I cancelled months ago. I have been on hold for hours multiple days now and have even sent in proof from my bank and they just ignore me. I am about to call a lawyer. Give me back my 4137 dollars VRBO! I will never use this company again
