After a positive interaction with Intelius, James increased their star rating on June 3, 2015.

    Updated review: June 3, 2015

The problem has been fixed. The non-existent person no longer shows as a resident at this address on the data base, and I'm looking forward to a reduction or elimination in the junk mail we are getting in that name.

    Original Review: May 27, 2015

Intelius shows a non-existent person ** living at this (my) address which causes lots of unwanted junk mail addressed to the same name to arrive in my mail at my address. It obviously also increases the potential for identify theft. This non-existent person is also falsely shown as living at my former address. Intelius provides no way to have this misinformation corrected/challenged despite the harm it causes to me now, and perhaps even worse, in the future.

    Response from Intelius

James, we are sorry for the frustration this may have caused. Since Intelius is an aggregator of publicly available information, public records, and consumer data, our results aren't verified and inaccuracies can occur. Intelius passively collects this information, which means that we are unable to correct it - that would need to occur at the data source. However, we may be able to assist you in another way. We'll follow up in a private message to help find a resolution.

Late in March I was the victim of a hit & split accident in which a woman backed across a parking lot and hit my car, doing $7,000 damage. She was eventually caught, and I am prosecuting. Police told me she had an outstanding warrant for skipping court on a previous charge and this latest one was a misdemeanor. I wanted her full police record. Intelius told me she had no arrest record whatever and gave me an address for her which didn't match what was on the police report.

When I brought it to Intelius's attention they basically said "** happens" and promised to give me a "free" report on someone else, which they have not done. They said they'd get back to me in 24 hours but didn't, except for a blanket list of possible excuses for he failure. Also, if you notice, when you sign up to pay for one report they try, repeatedly, to entice you to click a box which allows them to charge you MONTHLY for additional reports you don't need. They want you to subscribe to endless reports so they can keep charging your credit card. Service: FAIL! Attempts to fleece your credit card: FAIL! Stay away from this outfit!

Last year in August I used this service to find my old friend. I gave the information of my credit card and I was careful not to be a member since I never needed to be. Recently I noticed they have been charging my account for almost a year. Due to my negligence I found out about it just last month. Since then I have contacted them and they send an email to me telling that because of my request they ended the membership and refunded this month to me! I have never been or wanted to be a member. I asked them to only charge me for the first time that I used the service and refund me but they keep sending automated response to me without giving me back my money. In my view this is a theft.

While I have never asked to be a member and I have never used this service but once in the month of August 2014 , my account has been charged every month 18.03 Euros which is 8 months up to now. this is a theft. Their not responding to me is an insult. Their continuous automated email instead of getting back to their client and try to listen and understand my issue is an insult. I went to help section and look what I found! "Why do I have a membership when I just wanted to purchase one report?" "During the purchase process, we sometimes offer customers the option of accepting a membership or trial membership in one of our subscription services. If you have a membership that you don't want, please call Customer Care and we will assist you in canceling your subscription."

My conclusion is that, this kind of behavior is a routine for this company. How the hell is that possible that when a customer does not want a membership , they register her/him as a customer and start charging her/his account???????????? And in the help section unknowingly they admit that they do it. Why don't they correct the website and make sure this does not happen to the customers. Is that impossible? hell no. Why this does not happen to us when shopping on thousands of other websites???? I am really angry and upset not only for the money but for this sort of treating their customers and misusing our trust. I want my money back and I want an apology and I will continue informing everyone about the way treated me and got my money out of my account. Thanks.

I was shocked to see how much of the information in my Intelius profile is wrong: my middle name, they say I currently live in a city I've never lived in at all, and that I'm "related to" only one person whom I've never even heard of and who doesn't even have the same last name as mine. When I called Intelius to correct the bad information, I was told they don't have the ability to change the information even if it's wrong. I was sure they meant it's not their policy to do so, even if they've verified that I'm the person in the profile, but the customer service operator and then her supervisor said Intelius simply is not technically able to make corrections.

The only option, they claim, is to have yourself removed from the system, and that takes more than a week after you've sent them a notarized letter or faxed them your driver's license (which I'm not comfortable doing if they're this loose with documentation). In other words, they're happy to accept their customers' money even when they know they're selling information that's not correct. Conversely, I own my own business and it's likely potential clients would see the misinformation, so this is something that could cost me money. Great company, eh?

Harris, we're sorry for any confusion around the data Intelius provides. Since we aggregate information from public records and publicly available sources, we receive a high volume of records, and we aren't able to verify or modify them. We do our best to attribute the data correctly, and we are regularly able to provide people with reliable results. We understand, however, that there can be discrepancies for people with similar names or with lots of data in common. We are always working to improve those results, so your feedback is appreciated! I tried to get a criminal background check on my abusive husband. Intelius charged my credit card and had not found anything, records. I went on public records at no charge and found 14 charges in 3 states with my husband's name and date of birth. My husband had assaulted me and moved out. I needed the information as character references for the prosecuting attorney and my order of protection.

I contacted Intelius on the following business day and was told they would not refund my money but they will give a report credit to use within the upcoming year. WHAT?!!! Intelius could not give me public records and charged my credit card. I filed a dispute with Intelius and was given a report credit that's, lets face it, is USELESS, and terminated the "agreement" of a monthly charge of $79.55 per month.

I disputed the charge with my credit card and Intelius returned my money but then charged it again. Bottom line, I paid money to Intelius for nothing in a time when I am need of every dime I can keep. To be ripped off is not what I expected. I closed the credit card used to pay them the first time because they continued trying to get money out of me. I would NEVER RECOMMEND this company to ANYONE.

The first person I contacted gave me a pretty good deal on several vouchers or credit. I use it primarily for locating people. I help people with local high school reunions and military reunions, pretty innocent things like that. I think it's a very good product. The people that I used to work with look at it and say, "Oh my God! They're selling that so anybody know you." And I said, "Come on! It's just name and address."

So far it seems to be pretty good. A lot of the addresses seemed to be how to seek one store - what really is the current address is actually maybe the fourth one down. Not sure how they actually go about updating, keeping their phones and addresses connected or linked. But most of the time they work pretty well. And I do recommend it to friends. One thing that I suggest to make it better is to make what I pay for in terms of credits. Something I couldn't spend rather than having to come at me for money. Like instead of paying an extra $29 for additional information, I can just spend 10 or 20 credits to get it.

The information they provide us is the old address. Some of the information they provide are information of persons who have already passed away. They don't have current information so I'm still not convinced with all of it. Intelius needs to upgrade their system because what I have here is a premium membership, but it does not provide current information of a company or individual. I have been using Intelius to find distant relatives with good success. If you know a place someone lived, it's very helpful; otherwise, it can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I like that Intelius lists past phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, job titles, and relatives. I wish it had an advanced search function to search by middle name (you can filter by middle initial), age or date of birth, and relatives. One thing I'm very unhappy about is that they froze my access 4 days before my subscription expired and wanted me to call them to extend--not cool.

Intelius offered us social security lookup feature that the others didn't have but we needed.

The one thing that we don't particularly like is when we get the Intelius report on the addresses. It doesn't really provide us an aging of those things. So we don’t know if the most recent one is at the top or how that works. We've never really gotten any information on that and we just have to sometimes deal with the top three addresses and work it from there. Sometimes the top address is old. It’s not fairly recent. But for many years, our sales rep ** was excellent. She took care of problems, anticipated things and was on the ball. She has since left, there’s a new guy. He was a little slow to start, but has been okay. He just recently made a touchbase call and I have not had a chance to return his call.

From my experience, I'm used to managing my subscriptions completely online and when we ran out of credits on Intelius like the last time I was using them, I couldn't just click a button and purchase more, which I thought I found to be sort of unusual compared to other tools I use.

I had to email somebody and then just gave their name and it said it was my account representative. We have negotiate back and forth by email and it wasn't totally clear to me initially how I would give this individual my credit card information. There was no way to do it online. Eventually, there was but it just had to go through that kind of sales rep. That was something unique that I experienced in renewing my contract with them. I also asked how to change my name because I inherited the log in information of my predecessor of the organization. But I just never got a reply on that and I don't think it ever did get changed. So, again it wasn't a web thing to point out where everything was available for me to just take charge and change the account. I had to rely on other people to do it for me.

The nice thing about Intelius is it allows me to go through their address history and find out where they're at now. Also when members of our Church move, if we didn't know where they went, we would just wait a few months to see if they would show up on the public record search and then go to Intelius and there they are. So we're able to forward directives to somebody near where they live now. If I were Intelius, I would definitely try to market Intelius to the Norman Church. We literally got from them a list of 500,000 people we can't locate. I've never had a problem with Intelius. They even upsold me to get the email address, that was a wise thing for them to do. It looks like they have found a report that you can see by paying the fee, even if they have not found anything. This service is a joke. I'll keep a close eye on my credit card statements.

I purchased the lookup and a window appeared and it showed to get your 60% discount click here (I am not 100% sure if it was 60% or more) so I did and it said the discount would be applied at checkout.

What I could not see in the upper right hand corner in the Order Summary was that I had just purchased Intelius Premier. It now says, “If you cancel within 7 days you will be charged $7.95.” Well when I ran the report, Intelius now shows "No Information Found". So, I called to cancel. I was told I would have to pay $7.95. I told David with Intelius, I was not going to pay $7.95. That their company was a fraud. I hopefully got out of this thing for .95 cents, which is still a rip off. This company should be run out of town. My word to all who think about using this company, "DO NOT". I really will not know for sure what I have been charged until I get my credit card statement. I will challenge anything over .95 cents.

I paid $14.95 - and of course, they want you to sign up for a membership but you can cancel within 7 days. I put in my credit card info and back the report comes.....for someone with an entirely different name - not even close to what I requested. NOTE THAT I GOT NO WARNING THAT THE REQUESTED NAME WAS NOT FOUND - just came back with a different name. The record returned was of someone of the opposite sex, who lived in an entirely different county. I immediately cancelled my account, and when I did so, made a note that I wanted to be refunded the amount paid since the report was wrong. Imagine my surprise when days later an ADDITIONAL charge shows up on my credit card statement. I was expect a refund and instead there was another charge!!

I called the company, only to be told how I paid for one month of service like I agreed....um what?? I said "not only do I not want your service, I want a refund." She said that she'd give me a "gift" refund of the monthly fee, but they would not refund the cost of the search I did. I said absolutely not - it was the wrong information and I was never given the option of NOT receiving it (such as "we don't have a record for Bob ** - would you like Ben ** instead?). She told me the best she could do was offer me a credit valid for one year. At this point I threatened to report them to the Better Business Bureau. I was then put on hold and when the operator returned, she told me they'd issue another "gift" refund. GIFT? You didn't give me what I ordered in the first place - you aren't doing me any favors!!

He talked to the outsource people and they were supposed to cancel it. I placed him on hold and investigated it. The outsource had notes on his account that said he called and canceled his account. The outsource person who canceled his account didn't cancel it the correct way so the customer was still being billed.

Knowing that it was our company's fault, I contacted a manager to ask if we could refund the customer. I showed the manager the notes of the outsource rep saying he wanted to cancel and that they messed up somehow by not closing his account down. My manager said we could do nothing even though it was our fault. I pleaded for the customer because he was out almost $300.00 because of us. Still, they said that we can't refund him his money. This was the straw that broke the camels back. It happened all the time. We made a mistake and the customers have to pay for it. I quit within the week.

I went online May 7, 2010, to purchase one mailing address from Intelius for a charge of $1.95. It appeared that I had accidentally purchased a monthly membership for $19.95. I immediately called the phone number provided to explain my concern and get it straightened out. I was told by a very nice lady that I had indeed only been charged $1.95 and I had done everything correctly and there was no additional $19.95 (per month) charge. I thanked her graciously.

Today, May 19th, I received my credit card statement with the $1.95 charge from Intelius plus a $19.95 charge from Intelius. Of course, I called Intelius to explain that I should only have the $1.95 charge and that I had called immediately to clarify that there were no other charges, no monthly membership! Sherron checked my records and verified my call. He said that at that time, there was no monthly membership charge, that the membership was activated after my call, by me typing in my email address. I do not recall activating anything after the call because I was so afraid of ordering something I did not want. He explained to me that company policy was no refunds, but he could offer me a discount of $14.95 instead of the $19.95 charge.

I continued to explain to him that I cleared all of that up by my phone call and was assured I had not been charged for more than I ordered, and finally asked to speak to his supervisor when I was getting nowhere with him. Shelly repeated the same spiel of no refunds. I questioned the legitimacy of her company when I again explained that my phone conversation on May 7th assured me I would only be charged $1.95. Of course I have not "used" the monthly membership from Intelius because I did not subscribe to it. I simply purchased one mailing address and was assured that was all I would be charged for.

This is an internet service to do investigative background checks, people searches, etc. I used the service to find a person in connection with my mother's estate. The people search option was $1.95, which was debited from my account on 4/7/10. I read the agreement language carefully and did not find that I would be charged for any future items. For the next several days, I kept receiving phone calls from an unknown caller. When I answered, I was advised that based on my Intelius purchase that I was eligible to receive large discount coupons. I would receive a free sample of coupons, then if I liked the offer, I would be billed $19.95 per month to receive future offers. I told the caller that I was not interested in receiving any samples, not interested in the offer at all, and did not want to be charged, to which she agreed and promptly hung up on me.

After reviewing my bank records, Intelius debited $19.95 on 4/7/10, resulting in two overdrafts of $35 each. I contacted Intelius, advising that I did not agree to have my bank account debited and that I want $89.95 returned to my account. Intelius agreed to refund my $19.95 but not the overdraft fees. As of today, 4/12/10, I have not been refunded at all.

When I saw this issue on my checking account, I contacted my bank and then the company. All I ever agreed to was a onetime charge of $1.97, period. When I contacted the company, I was told and requested a refund I was told, "That’s not going to happen," by a 'supervisor' named Emma id # 8876. If I ever agreed to what this company is saying then it was done to get to the onetime check and it was not clear as to what I as a consumer was agreeing to. There were many pop ups and I just wanted 1 check and that is all I ever did.

I was told by the 'supervisor' that it didn't matter how many times I used the service I was being charged period and there was no refund period. I was refused numerous times to be transferred to someone higher. I was told point blank "you are not getting any higher than me". When I requested to speak with her manager I was told "he doesn't have a phone and will not speak to a customer, that's what he pays me for.” I have requested that the service be canceled and my money returned. I have no conformation on whether or not this has occurred.

This is a scam, plain and simple. I used the internet service of www.Intelius.com. Who must have given them my information? Then Valmax and Twenty4proplu started charging my credit card with 2 different services, which I know nothing about. I was charged $24.95 a month. I did not see or notice the charges at first, thinking I must got something from a website. Then I saw the charges were ongoing. I called the phone number for Valmax first (888-241-0049) and was told I purchased some discount service. I told them I never would purchase any discount service and that I never signed up nor was I notified of these fraudulent charges. They refused to refund the money, and then they said they would reverse the last payment and credit my account. I said, "That's not good enough, as you are scammers, just plain thieves." The person said, "My ID is **. Thank you, but this is all we can do."

I then called the next company Twenty4proplu at 888-337-4295. I said basically the same thing to them, and I was passed to a supervisor. The person said my ID is ** and the supervisor said her ID was **. She said she would credit all the charges back to my card. Then as I looked at the ID numbers, I said why would 2 different companies have the same ID system. So I began to investigate and found they are all the same companies under one company, Vertrue, Inc. They have changed their names a few times from all the civil action from different states. Their tactics remain the same. Scam, scam, scam

I cancelled the services that same day and time, as well as received a confirmation page back stating my request had been received and my credit card would not be billed.

I called Intelius and spoke with a female representative who stated there was nothing she nor her company could do and I would have to contact my bank because they already made a credit back to my account, but it would take 7-10 days for this to take affect. I tried telling the representative that my account should never had been debited to begin with and their $19.95 debit caused my account to go into overdraft. The female representative stated that I should talk with my bank because there was nothing they could do. My point is they were not authorized from the beginning to debit my account.
