I agree with all those customers that dislike the new photo book process. It is very slow and not user friendly. I have done 50 or more books over the years and this latest update is awful. The editing process is complicated and doesn’t work properly. I read the “help” page and it was not helpful at all. When you try to edit a picture or the size of the box, the cursor keeping jumping back and forth. It is very irritating. Go back to the version that was working perfectly.

I don't know what happened to the quality of Shutterfly's books. I've ordered dozens of photos books from Shutterfly and other places. My most recent book from Shutterfly was completely unacceptable. The photo colors didn't look at all like the amazing colors I saw with my eyes and captured in photos. They put it through three times and they all looked the same poor quality. I've ordered the same photos in book form from another source and when I can prove to Shutterfly what it should look like I will expect a refund.

I have been a customer and photobook creator with Shutterfly since way back when it started as KodakGallery, and have always created at least 4 photo-journals through this platform every year. Last month when I logged in to make my latest book, I was so irritated to find the software interface for advanced creation of my photobooks had completely changed, and there was no option to revert back to the system I was comfortable with.

One of the most aggravating change was that it is now impossible to copy & paste text descriptions that I used to write up in word and spell check before pasting it into the book. Now you have to manually type in any text, and there is no spell check. Because of that, it took me twice as long to make the book as I had to carefully review the text several times to eliminate typos. I was ultimately very happy with the final product and it was delivered just fine, but I am compelled to leave a 1 star review here because I just cannot stand this new software and will be switching to a different service. Interesting to see here that I am not alone.

I found the site somewhat difficult to use, especially when trying to move photos around or add photos. I also assumed they would print to latest version of the project I was working on, and that didn’t happen. I received 8 copies of the incomplete book. They were quick to offer a refund but what a waste of time and paper. And I had to pay for additional shipping costs…

I have made 75 projects on Shutterfly since 2010, and I have been very pleased with the products I've received. I watch for the sales, especially the Free Additional Pages sale, which make their book prices more competitive. I would have given them a five-star rating, if not for the recent changes in book making. The process of adding text is very tedious; the cursor doesn't always work properly, and I can't read the small letters in the box, so I have to enlarge the page, and then the view shifts to another place on the spread. It now takes me twice as long to make pages. Shutterfly, if you're reading this, please bring back the old method of adding text!

I recently viewed my cc statement and noticed a charge of $107 from Shutterfly. I have not ordered anything on Shutterfly for quite a while. I went online to my Shutterfly account and noticed someone had ordered a photo I had in my saved photos. They ordered this photo in a plexiglass frame, charged it on my saved cc, and had it shipped to MY HOME ADDRESS! I called my cc company and told them it was fraud, and they temporarily credited my account. About a week later, I received this Shutterfly shipment. When I opened the box, it was a 4x6 picture in a plexiglass frame, an old photo I had saved in my profile. It wasn't even centered, and it was blurry and faded.

The thief didn't even take the time to make it look nice, lol! It was just a random picture, half the people were cut out of the picture and the frame was the cheapest thing I ever saw! I threw it out. The cc company called me back a few days later and told me they were re-charging me the amount because they had called Shutterfly and Shutterfly told them that I did receive the package therefore, the charge is legit. I DID NOT ORDER THIS SHIPMENT, but it did come to my house! I called Shutterfly and told them to IMMEDIATELY cancel my account! I know it wasn't a big dollar amount, but it's the principle of it!! Be careful leaving an account with them or any personal info or cc info with Shutterfly. Someone in Shutterfly will order something/anything, charge it to your account AND ship it to your address just so they can justify a claim if it gets disputed and keep the money. BEWARE.

As others have stated, I have been using Shutterfly for years. I create an annual album, as well as my individual photo orders. I am so disheartened and disappointed in the new version. It is so difficult to navigate my photos. There are so many headers and ads on the webpage, that the actual space left to view photos is about 1/3 of the whole page. The least that can be done is to update the site to have a "full page view" option. In addition, the new design aspect for the photo books is terrible. I've put too much work into my current annual album to change anything now. However, once 2026 is done, I'm going to have to find another source for my photobook needs. What used to be a relaxing pass time for me has become a frustrating experience.

I have used Shutterfly to create 2 travel books in the last year. They are gorgeous, well-made books!! I uploaded all 500 plus photos for each trip and used Shutterfly's free 24-hour page and photo arrangement service. They did a great job of organizing the photos in varying arrangements and sizes. After I received the initial book arrangement back, I was able to rearrange a few photos and add beautiful text, photo outlines, decorative accents etc. to each page. I chose to do a 12x12 book with the lay flat deluxe pages. It ended up with over 90 pages and the photo print quality is gorgeous!!

People need to be mindful that Shutterfly is using your photos so if you do not take quality pictures, there is nothing they can do about your photo errors. With a few discount offers, my end price was exceptionally reasonable. I am thrilled with my book! Getting the hang of editing your book will take a little time and I did Google for how to accomplish some things, but it was relatively easy. I spent a week adding text details, page backgrounds, embellishments, outlines etc. and it was well worth it. I created a book with Shutterfly's initial 24-hour layout service that is a lifetime keepsake. I can't express how happy I have been with Shutterfly and I as I continue to travel overseas, I will use them again for my next book(s).

Editing text box requires enlarging the page to 200% to just read what is there to edit. I can not easily get it to line up photos... I am still struggling through a book in July that should have been done in March and I almost just restarted somewhere else. Really really bad.

The photo alignment after moving is not useful, as the photo appears over other photos. No scroll bar in the photo box. Don't like the auto-populate when hovering over a photo. Don't believe any of the developers have ever created a photo book using manual tools. They need to bring back the old interface/tools as an option. Otherwise, I'm probably going to find a new platform to create my travel photo books.

This is a follow up to my recent review of Shutterfly changes. I had heard some cautionary comments about the recent changes, but after my initial frustration, I finished my photo book project with no problem. There were some changes, but I was still able to use the tools that I needed to get it done.

I did have to Google a lot to find answers to questions that I had, but any questions that were not answered online were answered by two or three Shutterfly assistants that were very helpful. I had no problem making my photo book. In the past I have had great experiences with the Shutterfly assistants, and the same is still true. I'm a fan again.

      Original Review: May 27, 2026

First, let me say that Shutterfly has gotten pretty pricey for me, even with discounts, but I've used them for making photo albums for years because I've enjoyed the creative process of being able to make my own books--travel books, photo books, recipe books, genealogy books. They've always been there when I needed help or had questions about a project, and I have always recommended them to others. I have just started my first photo album since the changes, and I already hate the new photo slot changes.

How do I ensure that my photos are the correct ratio? It's WAY more work than I want to do and just creates more frustration instead of sparking creativity. A couple of my friends have already told me that they were not happy about all the changes, but I'm giving it a chance. Not sure what else I'll encounter, but if it becomes too cumbersome, I'll check out other sites. I'll adjust my rating after this project.

While text was still there, spacing had changed. I called customer service to see if they could find the old version, and the agent did try to help, but had no luck. He did give me a $30 discount, which hardly makes up for the hours I spent redoing the book.

In addition, they removed the separate text entry function, so it is difficult to enter text. Backgrounds, fonts, and stickers that are actually in the book don't show up on the "in the book" section. I'm with other reviewers who say "what were they thinking?" I had a third order placed but when my wife saw the delivery date she said to cancel it. I was only given a partial refund. I am out $50, am behind on getting invitations out. The manager I was transferred to told me that they handled the replacement order incorrectly.

I told them all I wanted was a full refund to be made whole and I would probably not use their services again but that if they could not give me a full refund then I would share this experience online to let others know how Shutterfly lost a 10+ year, repeat customer simply by not providing a full refund after misprinting invitations multiple times. 100% not happy Shutterfly.

I am incredibly frustrated and at a loss for what to do other than pray that Shutterfly listens to its customers. The new editor has ruined my long-time hobby and love of making photo books. Since 2008, I’ve used Shutterfly to create photobooks for trips, birthdays, and special occasions, as well as a yearly family album. The recent changes to the photo book editor have made the process incredibly frustrating. I have always elected to use blank pages, advanced editing, custom path so I can have complete control over the entire design.

Main issues: Photos snap to a hidden grid and cannot be freely positioned. Aligning and evenly spacing images is unnecessarily difficult. Dragging elements is glitchy and inconsistent. Even blank page layouts feel constrained, limiting design control. The previous editor was precise, fast, and easy. Why fix something that wasn't broken? Don't try to make a process easier for novice customers when you have long-time customers who are the backbone of the company and want the design control afforded by the old custom path.

The few improvements (like the functions with the "hand") are far outweighed by how clunky, time-consuming and imprecise everything is now. And that Hand causes more trouble than it is worth- makes it so hard to select pictures to drag, select and align. Until now, I have never considered another program because this was simple. It worked and I knew how to use it. If Shutterfly doesn't fix this soon, I will be leaving when I am done with my yearly family album (if I can even hang in there for the next 8 months.)

I have created over 100 projects in Shutterfly over the years. They launched this spring the "New Improved" platform to create photo books. This new platform is not user friendly with only a few things that were actually improved. I do like the new way to insert text however they got rid of some very important things like the SPELL CHECK is GONE. So now I will have to type everything in Word and copy then Ctrl +V (paste is gone) to put it in the text box. Let's make more work for me! I don't want to buy a book with misspelled words.

I like to align my text to justify. They got rid of the justify. They got rid of Add a Photo Box so if I want to use my photo as a background then add a picture on top of it I can't unless I use a workaround which involves using 2 pages and over 7 steps to get a picture into a picture when the old platform you just clicked on Add a Photo Box. They also got rid of all my favorites. All the things I saved over the years to use in other projects gone. There are a lot more things that they got rid of that it's just too many to list. If they don't fix these problems I will have to look for another place like forever. So sad taking something that worked so good and ruin it.

What was Shutterfly thinking when it made these recent ‘enhancements’? I’ve made dozens of photo books with them over the years and always found the process intuitive and creative. Such a mess now. They’ve taken away Advanced Editing and with it so many features that I think are critical to manually making your book. I can’t add a photo to an existing page layout, easily add text boxes, or even find half the tools I previously used. This new program is beyond frustrating. I have four books in the works but will be looking for a new site to help me create my books. Whoever implemented these changes should be fired.

I have been using Shutterfly for many years to make photo albums. I always design it myself. A few years ago they changed how that worked and I found it very clumsy. I was able to go back to the original system. Between now, April 2026, and the last time I made an album, about November 2025, they have changed their system again. It is extremely slow, it crops photos when you don't want them cropped, it is very difficult to match and line up photos on a page because the program thinks it knows what to crop, and many other problems. I will try to finish the project I am working on, though it is very frustrating, and if they don't change back to the original system or somehow vastly improve the current one, this will be the last time I use Shutterfly.
