Walmart has announced that it will offer its membership program, Walmart+, at half the price to consumers who receive government assistance.
The discount, dubbed Walmart+ Assist, will be applicable for either monthly or yearly Walmart+ membership plans.
“Walmart+ Assist was designed to do exactly what’s in the name: assist those who need it most,” said Venessa Yates, senior vice president and general manager of Walmart+. “We’re making it easier and more accessible for government-assisted customers to become members and take advantage of the full suite of savings Walmart+ has to offer them.”
Same benefits, half the price
With Walmart+ Assist, members will still get all the same benefits of the membership program, but at half the cost. These benefits include:
A Paramount+ subscription
Free delivery from Walmart stores
Nationwide gas discounts
Free shipping with no order minimum
Returns from home
Mobile scan and go
Walmart Rewards on popular items
Early access to online sales, product releases, and special pricing
Video streaming with Pluto TV
Verification
Both existing and new Walmart+ members will be eligible for Walmart+ Assist. If you’re a current member, you go through the same verification process as new members, and you’ll receive a prorated refund for the difference; then, the new discounted membership price will start immediately.
To verify your eligibility for Walmart+ Assist, Walmart has partnered with SheerID, a third-party verification service that will ensure members are receiving benefits from one of the following organizations: SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, SSI, TANF, TTANF, NSLP, or LIHEAP.
Consumers will input their personal information into the SheerID site and receive confirmation of their eligibility.
Once eligibility is verified, consumers will be taken to the Walmart+ website to sign up for a discounted monthly or yearly membership at either $6.47/month or $49/year. Currently, a Walmart+ membership runs consumers $12.95/month or $98/year.
The verification for Walmart+ Assist will last for one year from the time of enrollment. After that, Walmart+ will continue to check members’ status each year to maintain the discounted membership price.
