Twitter to launch option to report misleading voting information

Users in several countries will soon be able to report content for being ‘misleading about voting’

Twitter announced on Wednesday that it’s rolling out a new feature which will enable users to report misleading tweets related to voting.

The feature will launch first in India on April 25, then in Europe starting April 29 -- two major areas where elections are set to take place soon. The company says it plans to extend the option to users who will be participating in other elections around the world “throughout the rest of the year.”

In a blog post announcing the feature, Twitter said users can report tweets that contain the following types of misleading information:

    • Inaccurate content related to the date or location of polling stations;

    • False claims about identity requirements for being eligible to vote;

    • Misleading information about how to vote or register to vote (for example, that you can vote by Tweet, text message, email, or phone call).

    Cracking down on false information

To report a tweet, users can tap the arrow menu on the tweet and select the “report tweet” option. From there, choose the “It’s misleading about voting” option from the dropdown menu.

"Voting is a fundamental human right and the public conversation occurring on Twitter is never more important than during elections. Any attempts to undermine the process of registering to vote or engaging in the electoral process is contrary to the company’s core values,” Twitter said.

Back in February, Twitter officials were called to appear before a Parliamentary Panel in India to present the company’s views on “safeguarding citizens’ rights on social/online news media platforms.” Following the meeting, Twitter agreed to appoint a nodal officer to work with the Election Commission to ensure that the Lok Sabha polls are not influenced by foreign entities.

The company says the new reporting feature is in addition to its "existing proactive approach to tackling malicious automation and other forms of platform manipulation on the service.”

Apple offering in-store repairs for MacBook keyboards

The company has advised employees to aim for next-day turnaround

Apple, which last month apologized to MacBook users experiencing keyboard issues, is making another effort to ease consumer frustration over its notoriously problematic “butterfly” keyboards.

The tech giant is now offering in-store MacBook keyboard repairs, according to Mac Rumors. In a memo to Genius Bar technicians obtained by the website, Apple said keyboard repairs should be "prioritized to provide next-day turnaround time.”

“Most keyboard-related repairs will be required to be completed in store until further notice. Additional service parts have been shipped to stores to support the increased volume,” Apple said. “These repairs should be prioritized to provide next-day turnaround time. When completing the repair, have the appropriate service guide open and carefully follow all repair steps.”

    Years of user issues

In recent years, Apple has been hit by a scourge of consumer issues with its “butterfly” keyboards. Though the keyboards were advertised as being “refined for greater comfort and responsiveness,” users began noticing that the keyboards tended to start malfunctioning after being exposed to dirt or dust.

A lawsuit filed last May alleged that the updated MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards are “prone to fail,” and over 35,000 people have signed a Change.org petition asking for Apple to recall the flawed keyboards.

Apple says it is now making sure that all of its retail locations have the necessary parts to repair keyboard issues in order to allow consumers to have their keyboard fixed in-store instead of waiting for their laptop to be returned from an off-site service center.

    Mitigating the issue

Last year, Apple updated its keyboards to include a new silicone membrane inside each key to keep dust and other particles out. However, the company never confirmed that the improvement was related to keyboard issues.

The company’s first acknowledgement of problems with MacBook keyboards came last month in response to a Wall Street Journal article, which let readers choose whether to view the story with or without e’s and/or r’s in order to see the impact of a keyboard that isn’t working properly.

Apple made sure to emphasize that the “vast majority of Mac notebook customers are having a positive experience with the new keyboard” before stating that consumers who are still experiencing keyboard issues should contact Apple Support.

The key to long life could be a happy spouse, study finds

Researchers suggest the benefits go beyond just a happy life together

The old saying “happy wife, happy life” could ring true, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the Association for Psychological Science.

The group found that when spouses are happy and satisfied with their lives overall, they are not only more likely to be happier in their relationships, but they could also live longer.

“The findings underscore the role of individuals’ immediate social environment in their health outcomes,” said researcher Olga Stavrova. “Most importantly, it has the potential to extend our understanding of what makes up individuals’ ‘social environment’ by including the personality and wellbeing of individuals’ close ones.”

      Prioritizing well-being

To see how spouse’s overall life satisfaction -- which the researchers say is determined by several factors, including physical activity and diet -- affected their life span, the researchers analyzed data from 4,400 couples nationwide.

Over the course of the study, participants completed self-reports on their health status, as well as what their regular routines looked like and how content they were with their lives and spouses.

All of the couples involved in the study were over 50 years old, and they provided information on important demographic factors, including education, household income, gender, age, ethnicity, and spouse mortality, which included things like chronic illnesses that could impact lifespan.

The overwhelming consensus revealed that partner satisfaction was crucial to longer life. When spouses were happy with their lives, it reduced their risk of dying, and vice versa -- unhappiness led to faster death.

The researchers also found certain characteristics that played a role in participants’ likelihood of dying: those who had poor physical health, were unhappy in their lives and relationships, were older, had less money, and weren’t as educated were all more likely to have an increased risk of mortality.

At the end of the eight-year study, 16 percent of participants had a spouse die, and they were more likely to die themselves once their spouse passed.

The researchers believe there could be several possible explanations for these findings, but they did note that engaging in physical activity as a couple was beneficial to overall happiness.

“This research might have implications for questions such as what attributes we should pay attention to when selecting our spouse or partner and whether healthy lifestyle recommendations should target couples (or households) rather than individuals,” said Stavrova.

      Living longer

While one recent study explored how regular exercise can lead to a longer life, this idea of spouses’ happiness affecting each other’s lifespan -- or health in general -- isn’t entirely new.

A few years ago, researchers from the American Psychological Association (APA) conducted a study that showed how having a happy spouse can be better for health and emotional well-being.

"This finding significantly broadens assumptions about the relationship between happiness and health, suggesting a unique social link," said William Chopik, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State University and principal investigator of the study. "Simply having a happy partner may enhance health as much as striving to be happy oneself."

New reports of dying Toyota hybrids appear to confirm dealer’s story of buried ‘sudden deceleration’ scandal

It’s not just Priuses that are suddenly dying on the road

They were on busy thoroughfares, returning home from work or running errands, about to turn left, pulling into traffic or passing cars in the fast lane, when they remember seeing the same vague message flashing across the dashboard.

“CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM” it said, according to over two dozen drivers who submitted grievances to federal regulators since January 2018. The clock on Toyota’s “limp-home” mode, something that Toyota itself has billed as a safety feature in the Prius, had begun to tick. Drivers had just a few moments to get off the road.

One person in Florida said they were trying to cross railroad tracks in their Prius when the car awkwardly jerked forward at the press of the gas pedal. The driver then noticed a “CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM” message on the screen.

“The car did drive on the gas engine a short distance to make it over the railroad tracks,” the driver recounted, in a report that they submitted to federal regulators in March. “This seems to be an issue that Toyota is ignoring.”

In the past five years, Toyota Prius cars have been plagued with a problem causing the vehicles to suddenly die while in motion. Toyota has twice recalled 800,000 Priuses to address the issue, mostly recently in October 2018. But mounting evidence suggests that Toyota has botched the recalls, giving credence to a Southern California dealer’s claim that Toyota is both refusing to pay for the correct repairs and is downplaying the dangers of its “limp-home” mode to save money.

“Somehow, this has been twisted where they want people to believe that that portion of it is safe,” the dealer Roger Hogan told ConsumerAffairs in an interview last year. Toyota has responded to Hogan’s claims by characterizing him as a disgruntled salesman.

      Going limp vs. dying

Both Toyota and Hogan agree that the problem is linked to the hybrid system malfunctioning or overheating. Toyota’s latest recall addresses the manner in which the car responds when that happens; the car is supposed to go into something called “limp-home” mode or “fail safe” mode, Toyota says, to allow people time to safely pull off the road. The company is instructing dealers to adjust the software in affected cars to ensure that the car goes “limp” rather than immediately dying on the road.

But Hogan says the Hybrid system itself -- or more specifically, a part powering it called the inverter -- is what needs to be replaced. Essentially, he argues that the car shouldn’t be malfunctioning or overheating at all.

In an ongoing $100 million lawsuit, he charges that Toyota has a pattern of refusing to properly address safety issues. Hogan has been outspoken about the issue for nearly two years, and the trial is scheduled for next month.

      Database shows repeated problems

A ConsumerAffairs search of the phrase “CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM” in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) database, a voluntary system in which consumers report problems with their cars, turned up 25 reports since January 2018 describing frightening or inconvenient experiences in which Toyota vehicles suddenly died.

In several cases, consumers said that the problem was left unfixed because it was not covered by a recall or because Toyota could not properly diagnose the issue. It wasn’t just the Prius that drivers had grievances with. Two reports describe a hybrid system failure in the Highlander and two others in Lexus vehicles.

“In one instance I was almost rear ended by a semi,” the owner of a 2013 Prius wrote to regulators in August 2018, after being told by Toyota that the problem wouldn’t be covered by a recall or warranty.

Drivers and experts have difficulty distinguishing between a car going “limp,” in accordance with Toyota’s safety standards, and one that is just dying. That's largely because “limp home” mode is not something that is actually regulated by NHTSA or anyone else, Jason Levine of the Center for Auto Safety noted in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. The newspaper recently interviewed more than a dozen Prius owners who described their cars stalling out after they had already undergone software repairs that were supposed to fix the problem.

“I was lucky nobody was behind me because I would have been rear-ended,” one Prius owner told the newspaper. He escaped without a crash, but Toyota later told him he would have to replace the inverter on his own dime.

The consumer whose car nearly died on the railroad tracks this year, meanwhile, wrote in their report to NHTSA that Toyota did agree to cover the cost of a new inverter. But in that case, the driver said Toyota covered it under an extended warranty program, not a government recall.

The problem with warranties, safety advocates say, is that they are also unregulated. And unlike recalls, warranties provide little recourse for drivers should they experience a defect past a given time period. In the case of the Prius, Toyota has said that some cars may be eligible for an inverter replacement under a warranty program that lasts 15 years.

      An $11,000 inverter

As the Times report notes, a similar issue appeared to afflict the Highlander Hybrid several years ago. But in that case, Toyota agreed to replace the entire intelligent power model, which holds the transistors for the inverter in place.

It’s an issue that Philip Barton knows all to too well. The Vancouver-based attorney purchased a Highlander Hybrid brand new in 2010. In the years since, the car was recalled by Toyota twice over the inverter issue. He underwent repairs as instructed, he tells ConsumerAffairs, and otherwise the car ran well. But then it unexpectedly died while his wife was driving home from work on icy roads earlier this year.

A Toyota dealership emailed him explaining that the inverter needed to be replaced entirely. And because the car was past its warranty, Barton would have to pay for it himself.

“As discussed, we cannot make a direct connection as to how or why the inverter assembly failed,” says an email that the dealership sent Barton, which he saved and forwarded to ConsumerAffairs. The email quotes Barton a total of $11,000 to replace the part.

Barton appealed to the corporate headquarters of Toyota Canada. He was mailed a letter stating that the company couldn’t help because his warranty policy had run out.

“Toyota Canada has very liberal warranty policies and a mandate to assist customers whenever possible,” the letter says. “Even with this mandate, your situation is one in which we cannot assist due to the length of time your vehicle has been in service.”

      Left with the bill

Unable to sell the vehicle, Barton is now letting it gather dust while he prepares to take the automaker to small claims court. He has since purchased a new car to use for the time being.

For drivers who can’t afford an extra car, the situation is even worse. A San Diego resident told NHTSA that he got the “CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM” notice on his 2010 Prius one last time in November. The car hasn’t started since, he wrote. But the driver said that Toyota still would not pay for the inverter to be replaced.

“I currently use my vehicle for my livelihood doing independent delivery services such as Instacart, Doordash, Postmates, etc.,” the consumer said.

In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, Toyota said that it is “committed to the safety and security of our customers.”

“We monitor the available information on this issue and would continue to investigate any new information that emerges and take any appropriate action,” the statement said.

They were on busy thoroughfares, returning home from work or running errands, about to turn left, pulling into traffi...

Sprint and AT&T settle their 5GE lawsuit

Sprint had charged its larger rival with deceiving consumers

AT&T and Sprint have settled a lawsuit in which Sprint accused its larger rival of using “numerous deceptive tactics” to mislead consumers into thinking it was offering next-generation 5G wireless service.

Both companies called the settlement “amicable” but would not comment beyond that, most likely due to confidentiality agreements.

AT&T drew heavy criticism in January when it branded portions of its 4G LTE network as 5GE, with the “E” standing for evolution. It updated the LTE icon on three Android smartphone models to make them read “5GE.”

AT&T justified the branding by saying the logo only appeared when a device was connected to portions of AT&T’s LTE network that received some speed-boosting upgrades. The other carriers immediately cried foul, arguing that users may believe their phone is capable of connecting to 5G networks even though it’s still using 4G connections.

      Taking it a step farther

A month later, Sprint took it a step farther by filing a lawsuit in federal court asking for an injunction to stop AT&T from using 5GE logos on its devices or advertising.

To bolster its argument, Sprint submitted a survey it commissioned that showed 54 percent of consumers believed the "5GE" networks were the same as or better than 5G. Additionally, 43 percent thought that their AT&T phone would be 5G capable if they went out and bought one that day.

The speedy settlement, first reported by Law360, only tells us that the two sides reached a mutually satisfactory agreement. Details of that agreement have not been disclosed.

      Work continues on 5G

Meanwhile, work by all carriers continues on actual 5G wireless networks, which will have 100 times the capacity of 4G. That, experts say, will dramatically improve internet speeds. Response times will be much faster as well. While a 4G network takes an average of 45 milliseconds to respond to a command, 5G will take only one millisecond to respond.

Sprint and T-Mobile have cited a need to cooperate on building a 5G network as an argument for their proposed merger. Recently, T-Mobile CEO John Legere warned that without a merger, both companies would have a difficult time building out their 5G networks the way their customers would want.

With the merger, he says the new 5G network would be able to provide low-cost high-speed internet service to underserved areas at a low cost.

Today’s teens seem to be in no hurry to drive

Young people say they have plenty of other mobility options

Since the advent of the automobile, generations of teenagers couldn’t wait to get their driver’s license. A license to drive meant freedom and the open road.

But these days, mobility doesn’t seem quite as enticing. A few years ago, Brandon Schoettle of General Motors developed a questionnaire for teens who were old enough to drive but who did not have a driver’s license. Schoettle wanted to know why.

The top eight reasons given for not having a driver’s license were:

      1. Too busy or not enough time to get a driver's license

      2. Owning and maintaining a vehicle is too expensive

      3. Able to get transportation from others

      4. Prefer to bike or walk

      5. Prefer to use public transportation

      6. Concerned about how driving impacts the environment

      7. Able to communicate and/or conduct business online instead

      8. Disability/medical/vision problems

22 percent plan to never drive

Twenty-two percent of the respondents went so far as to say they planned to never obtain a driver’s license. About 69 percent said they would get a license eventually.

When compared to their peers of the same age, those without a driver’s license tended to be less educated and more unemployed. That could suggest economics is a factor in their decision and put strong emphasis on answer number two.

Whether or not money is the main factor, the answers tend to suggest that driving simply isn’t a big deal for today’s teenagers and even young adults. But economics can’t be overlooked.

The Wall Street Journal points to the rising cost of both new and used vehicles. Earlier this year the average transaction price of a new car surpassed $37,000. Both Ford and GM have eliminated or cut back on the small sedans they produce, pouring their efforts instead into trucks and SUVs, which have a higher profit margin.

      Driving classes getting older

Brent Wall, who operates a driving school in Michigan, told The Journal that the kids in his classes are older than they were a decade ago. Some had to be pushed by their parents to learn to drive a car.

One possible reason the researchers haven’t advanced is that the road is a much scarier place than it was 10 or 20 years ago. There is more traffic moving at faster rates of speed.

When researchers at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's (CHOP) Center for Injury Research and Prevention and the University of Pennsylvania set up a driving simulator with real-world hazardous driving scenarios, young drivers didn’t do so well.

During the 35-minute simulation, which incorporated 22 variations of the most common ways teen drivers crash, nearly 43 percent of teen drivers who had their licenses three months or less recorded at least one crash in the simulator.

Since the advent of the automobile, generations of teenagers couldn’t wait to get their driver’s license. A license to drive meant freedom and the open roa...

Walgreens to raise minimum age to buy tobacco

Facing accusations of illegal tobacco sales to minors, the pharmacy chain plans to raise its tobacco-buying age to 21

Walgreens announced Tuesday that it will increase the minimum age to buy tobacco products at its stores to 21 starting September 1. The move comes about a month after the FDA issued a warning to the pharmacy chain over its high rate of tobacco sales to minors.

The FDA said its inspectors found 1,800 cases of illegal tobacco sales to minors since 2010. Of more than 6,000 stores inspected, 22 percent had made illegal sales.

“These illegal sales must stop,” former Commissioner Scott Gottlieb wrote in a letter to Walgreens president of operations Richard Ashworth. “The stakes are too high for our young people and our country’s decades-long fight to reduce the morbidity and mortality that accompanies tobacco product use.”

      Raising the minimum buying age

In the wake of the FDA warning, Walgreens says it will now implement a stricter policy for tobacco sales. The new policy, called “Tobacco 21,” will require customers to be at least 21 years old to purchase any tobacco products in its stores.

“We’ve seen positive results from other recent efforts to strengthen our policies related to tobacco sales, and believe this next step can be even more impactful to reduce its use among teens and young adults,” Ashworth said in a statement. “Through ongoing training and certification for pharmacists and technicians, we also continue to help and support people looking to quit the use of tobacco in their lives.”

Ashworth added that Walgreens will also be rolling out new support tools for patients who want to quit smoking. The retailer says it will promote smoking cessation products, as well as provide digital resources that may help people who are interested in quitting.

Lawmakers in a dozen states have already bumped the minimum tobacco-buying age from 18 to 21 under the Tobacco 21 policy. Walgreens said its new policy “aligns with the efforts of states and municipalities who have recently enacted, or are considering, laws to restrict tobacco sales to people 21 and older.”

“Walgreens has supported such legislative proposals,” the company said. “Studies have shown cities that have enacted Tobacco 21 laws have seen a sharp decline in tobacco use among young adults 18-20 years old.”

CVS Health, Walgreens’ largest competitor, stopped selling cigarettes in 2014.

Walgreens announced Tuesday that it will increase the minimum age to buy tobacco products at its stores to 21 starting September 1. The move comes about a...

Millennials to become the biggest spenders at restaurants and grocery stores

A report predicts that millennials’ food and beverage spending will outpace that of all other generations within ten years

Millennials are on track to become the biggest spenders at grocery stores and restaurants within the next ten years, according to a recent CBRE report.

As their spending power ramps up, CBRE predicts that millennials will start to eat out at full-service and high-end establishments and grocery stores. However, amid the demographic shift, there will still be demand for low-priced food options such as fast casual and fast food.

The food-and-beverage sector is “just as susceptible as others to sweeping demographic changes, which we’ll see influence real estate through formats such as grocery-restaurant combinations, more kitchen-only outlets, and delivery services,” said Melina Cordero, CBRE Global Head of Retail Research, in a statement.

Millennials likely to shift toward higher-end options

The constraints of student loan debt will ease up as millennials’ income grows, which is likely to drive an increase in preference for higher-end options among this age group. CBRE predicts that millennials will start spending more on food and beverage, “sometimes in volume and sometimes in price.”

At the same time, baby boomers are expected to spend less as they transition into retirement. The report authors say these demographic changes in spending habits highlight the need for retailers and retail-center owners to analyze and understand their customer base so that they can plan their menus and locations to cater to age group nuances.

“We see consumer preferences influencing many facets of retail real estate, including store location; store design to accommodate delivery pickup or prepackaged meals; and different store layouts to incorporate automated ordering and self service,” said David Orkin, an Executive Vice President leading CBRE’s Restaurant practice in the Americas.

The report found that although millennials dedicate the highest share of their income to food and beverage, they don’t spend more on food than older generations did at the same age.

In 1989, baby boomers spent 14.7 percent of their income on food; In 2001, Gen Xers put 13.2 percent of their expenditures toward food; In 2016, millennials spent 13.1 percent of their income on food.

Millennials are on track to become the biggest spenders at grocery stores and restaurants within the next ten years, according to a recent CBRE report....

Meal kits are better for the environment than grocery store meals

A new study finds that pre-portioned ingredients make meal kits less wasteful than store bought meals

Though they tend to be thought of as being bad for the environment due to the amount of packaging they are shipped in, new research finds that meal kits have a much smaller carbon footprint than equivalent meals purchased at a grocery store.

"Folks are really focused on the plastics and packaging in meal kits," said lead author Shelie Miller, an environmental scientist at the University of Michigan in a press release. "That's important, but it's not the full story."

For the study, the researchers looked at the whole life cycle of meal kits -- from farm to landfill. Looking at the whole picture, the study authors determined that packaging ends up being a fairly small contributor to the overall environmental impact of a meal.

“What really ends up mattering is the quantity of food wasted throughout the supply chain," said author Brent Heard, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan.

      Less wasteful

The researchers found that meals purchased at a grocery store and prepared at home produce 33 percent more greenhouse gas emissions than equivalent meals from services like Blue Apron or Hello Fresh.

"Meal kits are designed for minimal food waste," said Miller, noting that consumers often buy more food than they actually use when purchasing meal components from the grocery store.

“Even though it may seem like that pile of cardboard generated from a Blue Apron or Hello Fresh subscription is incredibly bad for the environment, that extra chicken breast bought from the grocery store that gets freezer-burned and finally gets thrown out is much worse,” Miller said.

      Pre-portioned ingredients

Home-delivered meal kits certainly contain more packaging than meals purchased from a grocery store. However, the authors said the fact that meal kits come with pre-portioned ingredients ultimately makes them less wasteful than their store bought counterparts.

When food is purchased from the grocery store, consumers must often buy larger quantities of food than they can realistically use. That can lead to higher household food waste.

Meal kits were also found to produce fewer emissions in the area of last-mile transportation. Last-mile emissions accounted for 11 percent of the average grocery meal emissions compared to just 4 percent for meal kit dinners.

The researchers attributed the difference to the fact that each meal kit is just one of many packages delivered on a truck route, while grocery store meals typically require a personal vehicle trip to the store and back.

The full study has been published in the scientific journal Resources, Conservation and Recycling.

Though they tend to be thought of as being bad for the environment due to the amount of packaging they are shipped in, new research finds that meal kits ha...

Half of workplaces nationwide offer health and wellness programs

Researchers say the programs place an emphasis on employees’ overall well-being

In the midst of crazy workweeks, it can be difficult for consumers to find the time to exercise or take care of themselves.

Now, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 50 percent of workplaces in the country offer their employees health and wellness programs.

“Employers have an opportunity to shape work environments and work conditions in ways that support employee health,” said researcher Laura Linnan. “The Workplace Health in America Survey identifies gaps in knowledge to help practitioners and researchers set the agenda for future progress in worker and workplace health.”

      Prioritizing health

The researchers analyzed responses from the 2017 Workplace Health in America Survey, the first survey of its kind that asks participants from across the country to report on their employer’s healthcare offerings, including interventions for sleep, nutrition, and alcohol and substance abuse, among others.

One of the biggest findings from the survey was that the size of the company played a large role in what kind of health and wellness program was offered to employees.

The survey revealed that 92 percent of businesses with 500 or more employees offered a health and wellness program, while under 40 percent of businesses with 10 to 24 employees offered the same.

The researchers also found that not all healthcare offerings were the same; the most comprehensive programs were an integral part of company life and provided employees with several outreach and educational opportunities and support.

The study found that nearly 20 percent of health and wellness programs tackled obesity, nearly 30 percent helped employees get better about physical fitness and exercise, and nearly 20 percent aided those who were trying to quit smoking.

The researchers found that the most successful programs, in addition to being incredibly beneficial to employees, had a thought-out budget and an experienced member of personnel at the helm.

“Most American adults work, and many spend half or more of their waking hours at work,” said Linnan. “Where we work, how long we work, the conditions of our work, who we work with -- all of these factors impact our health.”

Model year 2013-2016 Dodge Darts recalled

The vehicle may not perform the shifts performed by the driver

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling 298,439 model year 2013-2016 Dodge Darts with 6-speed automatic transmissions.

The shifter cable bushing may fail allowing the cable to detach from the transmission.

If the shifter cable detaches from the transmission, the vehicle may not perform the shifts performed by the driver.

Additionally, despite selecting PARK with the shifter, the vehicle may roll away. These scenarios may increase the risk of a crash.

      What to do

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transmission side shifter cable bushing free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin on May 31, 2019.

Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V34.

Whistleblowers raise questions about safety of Boeing 787 Dreamliner

A report cites present and former employees of a South Carolina plant

While Boeing works to make critical safety modifications to the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, whistleblowers claim there are issues with another new Boeing jet, the 787 Dreamliner.

Current and former employees of the Boeing plant in North Charleston, S.C., have told the New York Times shoddy production is prevalent and oversight is lacking. As a result, some of these whistleblowers expressed concern about the safety of the aircraft.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a mid-size wide-body airliner that seats up to 335 passengers. Its body is constructed using composite materials, making the aircraft lighter and more fuel efficient.

The plane experienced production delays from the start, pushing its planned May 2008 debut back to late 2009. Flight testing wasn’t completed until mid-2011. It entered commercial service that same year with All Nippon Airways.

In its report, the Times cites internal emails, corporate documents, and regulatory records that it says paint a picture of a culture that values the speed at which an aircraft is built over its quality. According to the newspaper, Boeing pushed its employees to turn out Dreamliners on schedule while often giving little regard to the issues employees raised.

      Company response

Kevin McAllister, Boeing’s head of commercial airplanes, issued a statement saying employees at the South Carolina plant “are producing the highest levels of quality in our history.” He also said he “stands behind the work they do.”

The Boeing 787 has had its share of problems, though none of the aircraft have crashed. In 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded the Dreamliner after a series of problems with onboard lithium-ion batteries.

The battery failures resulted in the release of flammable electrolytes, heat damage, and smoke on two Model 787 airplanes. The grounding caused little industry disruption since United was the online airline flying the Dreamliner, and it only has six.

      Airworthiness directive

Then three years later, the FAA issued an airworthiness directive (AD) for the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 airliners powered by General Electric (GE) GEnx-1B engines. The agency said it took the step to “reduce the likelihood of engine damage due to fan ice shedding.”

The AD revealed that a Boeing 787 Dreamliner reported an in-flight incident in which an engine fan blade rub event caused an engine to shut down while the plane cruised at 20,000 feet. The nature of the power loss did not allow the flight crew to restart the engine. The plane has only two engines, but the flight crew was able to land safely using the single working engine.

According to the Times, Qatar Airways stopped accepting aircraft from Boeing’s North Charleston plant after numerous mishaps resulted in damage to some of the planes.
