HughesNet is the most abysmal ISP known to humankind. Their speed typically is anywhere from .22 Mbps to 5 or 6? After 11 PM is pretty much the only time it can be used, then it might get up to 20ish if I'm lucky, most of the time it can't be used to stream TV. My dial-up service from the late 90's was faster. Cell service is awful where we are so we depend on internet/wifi calling that hardly ever works. If someone was dying we most likely couldn't call 911.

This is the worst satellite internet provider out there. Hidden fees. Topped out speeds during peak hours. The latency is 575ms to 650ms. Any time it is raining cloudy or sometimes windy you get drops in service. To top it off, they have the worst foreign customer service I have ever experienced. I would never recommend using this ISP. You would be better off with your local broadband company if there is one near you.

This is the worst company I've ever seen. My 75-year-old mother had gotten it and she had no service. He called several times and we finally canceled it November 25th and after they charged her for November 20th they said that they couldn't do anything until December 20th to cancel it at the next billing cycle. Today is December 20th and my mom was charged $400 early termination fee for service that she's never gotten. They were supposed to send her a box to send the equipment back and when I got in contact with them they said that they have to charge for $400 and I explained to them that she was bombarded to get the service without me agreeing as I take care of her finances and when I'm the one that canceled it I explained to the lady and she said that they weren't going to charge you any early terminations fee since she was within the 30 days but she got thr charge yesterday on her bank account.

The service was terrible from day one. I could not stream a single show on a single device and forget about playing online games. When I went to cancel they told me it would be a 400 dollar early cancelation fee. They then offered to lower the fee to 200 after I had been paying for months for service that was unusable. I had a tech come out 4 times and spent hours and hours on the phone with them.

HughesNet is a predatory company that gives false information about the performance of their service. I have used them for the past 8 years as they were my only choice available because of my location. The service is so poor, I've not even been able to stream movies through direct TV if it was necessary. Gaming is out, period. I have 2 tvs and 1 sound system that draws on the internet, plus 1 desktop computer. I've been told that was too many devices. We run our phones on data. Updates on the computer usually time out because of the speed and reliability of the service. I've probably spent 50+ hours on the phone with their technical support over 8 years.

Advanced support is nothing but a young kid that goes down a checklist to resolve issues with no technical experience. Support is basically non existent. In truth, they're expensive and frankly they suck. They can improve their service I'm sure but don't. I understand they're now in a position to go bankrupt because Starlink is moving into their areas of operation. They deserve to go bankrupt and end their business. I am finally able to get Starlink and am dropping those bastards right away. I recommend you find any alternative to Hughesnet. If I could rate them in negative numbers, I would give them a minus 20.

This has been the worst internet experience of my life. Recently retired. All I use the service for is to stream TV, Within 2 weeks I hit the cap, and have to spend $25 extra to get a buffered signal. No signal when it rains, with low mbps. My neighbor got StarLink last week and is hitting over 175 mbps for $80 a month.... Time to switch. When I called Hughes customer service they told me that I ordered the wrong satellite and would need to pay a couple hundred more for the right set up. I told the rep that was the set up recommended to me by their team when I switched to them. "Sorry nothing we can do." I was promised a $200 Mastercard, never received. Deceptive company.... HughesNet is the worst Internet provider ever!! We have used them several years because we live in a rural area and had no choice. I was paying over $200/month for their elite fusion plan and I literally couldn't even watch 30 second videos. Even when I would try to view homes on Realtor.com, the pictures wouldn't even come up. They literally told me I would be able to even play PS3 which is literally a lie and they know it due to their major latency issues. We called them several times and they would always say "it shows good on their side" even though I couldn't even watch a simple 30 second video without it locking up. Their customer service is horrible too.

We finally switched over to Starlink and the difference is amazing! Starlink is also $80/month cheaper!! Starlink speed was 156 Mbps vs Hughes 32, upload was 29.60 vs Hughes 3.16 Mbps, Starlink latency 21 ms vs Hughes latency 41 ms, Starlink jitter was 5 ms vs Hughes 28 ms. Starlink blew them away in every category!! When we canceled our service, they then told us we had to package everything up and send to them or they would charge us $500 - $800. This was after 6 years of having issues with them. This company is absolutely HORRIBLE!! Take it from a customer who suffered fir 6 years with them!!! Choose Starlink!! I posted 2 pictures from a independent company that compared our new Starlink to Hughesnet elite Fusion internet which Hughesnet told me was their best.

When I called to end my contract after two years they offered an upgrade and promised it would be faster and cheaper. They were supposed to bill me in installments for the $400 upgrade, instead I received my next month bill for the $400 plus my monthly fee of over $100. When I called to tell them to take the service out, they said I would be billed another $400 to end my contract early.

Now, six months later and I'm still on the phone monthly with them because of poor service, all the time, not only when the wind blows or the sun shines but on bad weather days as well. And, I have to buy data tokens due to even more slow downs towards the end of the month. Last weekend we were trying to watch live PBR team bull riding on Fox Nation through the internet. The show kept buffering then going to a screen with a little red window that said "the stream did not load" "Oops, something went wrong" and I would have to reload several times. On the phone with customer service again and the CSR's fix for this problem was to wait and watch the show tomorrow when it wasn't live streaming. When I told her I wanted my bill cut in half because I can only use half of what I'm paying for, she offered me a $6.99 discount on my bill for the next three months. I live in a very rural area so I decided to try them again since it had been years and I was told by them that it was better service than it had been in the past that was You never hardly was able to use it like you couldn't get signal so I canceled my contract and got with T-Mobile. T-Mobile offered to pay for my contract ending with HughesNet.

Hughesnet was told this that I needed my final bill so that T-Mobile could pay it. They did not send me a final bill. They were supposed to send me a box to return the equipment. They did that a month and a half later after I ended my service and also took $500 out of my bank account for the final bill that I have been asking for for over a month. They are very deceptive. Their service is not good. I would definitely not recommend them to anyone. To me they're crooked. They say that when you talk to them. It may be recorded then they need to go back and listen to the recording of when they were told that T-Mobile was going to pay them. I have filed with my bank to get the money back. It’s horrible connection and now I have no service because it’s raining in Utah where their “gateway” is. It’s been 24 hours and they said it would be 8 more hours. I can’t afford to cancel and eat any fees for the equipment but I may do that anyway just because it feels wrong to continue. Please look into other options. Even if it seems you don’t have a cable hook up look into it anyway. Satellite in general leaves you at the mercy of any wind or raindrop. It’s lousy. Hughesnet uses resellers to mask the fact that it is Hughesnet. We got sucked in to a deal, that in the beginning we asked "this is not Hughesnet is it?" and they said, "We use a different technology than what you experienced in the past"... leading us to believe it was not. When the technician arrived he pulled out the Hughesnet box and we complained. They said "You can cancel in 30 days full money back." I called to cancel and they offered a special deal that would be an upgrade at no charge.... so they manipulated us past the 30 day mark and guess what they charged me for the upgrade.

Then they supposedly took it off and at the same time We couldn't even watch Netflix without buffering. I called and demanded cancelation and they hit me with a $340 Fee. Didn't send the box to return the unit so they are setting me up to pay a $550 equip non return fee so as it stands as of this review they are sending me a return box (I had to call customer service to get them to send it).

I cancelled my HughesNet subscription as soon as I possibly could. My Rural Electrical Cooperative, Pea River Electric of Ozark, AL, provides my rural home address with 1 Gb/s symmetrical upload/download fiber internet for $79.95 per month, no taxes or fees, and no equipment cost. Free installation and setup, and free equipment. I've been a happy customer of Pea River Fiber for 6 months now, and uptime has been 100%. My average download speed is 1.3 Gb/s, much higher than their guaranteed minimum of 1 Gb/s. That is 52 times faster than HughesNet. Streaming 4K HD Video to my Smart TV is a snap. After a full year with the service, I moved but was charged an unreasonable early termination fee of $265. Approximately a couple of times a month during that period, there were significant outages of as long as a day. Every time it rains, you can count on at least several hours of no internet. I strongly caution anyone considering HughesNet. My experience has been a long string of unauthorized charges, billing deception, and poor customer service.
    • Unauthorized Charges: HughesNet added a $50 “pole mount” fee to my bill without telling me. I declined all optional services at installation and was told installation fees were waived. I was never informed of this fee or that I was signing for it. Only after multiple Better Business Bureau complaints was the charge finally removed.
    • AutoPay Without Consent: I never enrolled in AutoPay and even received an email from HughesNet confirming I was not enrolled. Despite that, they kept AutoPay active and repeatedly attempted to withdraw money from my account without permission. They have refused to remove it, and my bill remains unpaid solely because they will not fix this issue.

    • Customer Service Failures: I contacted support numerous times and escalated directly to CEO Pradman Kaul. He chose not to respond, and the company still hasn’t resolved the AutoPay problem. The delays and refusal to act show a lack of urgency and disregard for customers’ rights.

I will not make any payment until AutoPay is deactivated, and I will not accept late fees caused by their refusal to resolve their own billing violations. HughesNet’s actions are unacceptable, and I am now pursuing complaints with the FCC, FTC, and other consumer protection agencies. Where we live, edge of rural area, we have tried about 5 different internet/satellite/wifi/router companies here at our home. WARNING: Hughesnet, Hughes satellite, whatever they call themselves now, was the absolute hands-down WORST of all, and trust us, we exhausted all available internet/Wi-Fi service providers in the area that were affordable enough for the basics. Hughes was also one of the priciest.

When the 3rd-party installer showed up, he mounted the huge dish to our rear yard block wall and then proceeded to point it right at a tree 15 feet away in our front/side yard. After coming inside and setting everything up really fast, he spent maybe 3 minutes with us going through the channels with the remote and then grabbed his tools and left.

Ten minutes later our signal went out, and from that point it was too late, couldn't reach the company to have him return. So, from that point on, we dealt with constant buffering and outages, so much after a few days of this, we just CANCELLED our brand new contract, paid the crooks off what we owed and finally found a company that has been the best, even light years ahead of all others, especially HughesNet. They wouldn't even send someone out to take down and remove their huge antenna that again, the installer pointed at a tree. So we as well had to spend time disassembling the giant thing with bars and bolts everywhere and then make a trip to the dump to discard the junk they left behind for us.

So years later, the HughesNet company, no doubt struggling for business, came to our neighborhood, AND ON EVERY STREET SIGN POST, attached foam-core HughesNet advertisement signs thus cluttering up the HOA neighborhood and violating all sign permit laws in the county. These people are the utmost worst ever. Avoid them at all costs.

The installer set up the equipment when it was completely dark outside and he placed it next to a TV we rarely watch, we told him that. So the modem is nowhere close to the TVs we do use and we had no problem with our data use last month but all of a sudden on the 2nd month 8 days into the month we are all out of our 200 gigs of data. How is that possible? I have been using less this month so??? Of course we are being blamed. Like I said I feel like they are taking advantage of us. We are both seniors living on a tight budget and I explained all of that to them when I was talking to them about service. I said there are basically 2 TVs that we stream on all the time and that is all. No other devices but we want to stream.

We are trying to find a cheaper way to watch TV. Cable keeps costing more and more while they keep eliminating channels that we enjoy. We thought we would do the Internet thing since everyone seems to enjoy it. I did not know the difference between companies and foolishly I believed their sales pitch. We were told that this plan would more then cover us. I wonder why the first month was great but now the 2nd month it did not cover even 1/3 of us streaming. I am angry! I will keep telling everyone who will listen so hopefully they don't do this to other innocent people!!

They had a guy install it and it wasn't working so they sent someone out to check it which you have to pay for. Apparently they didn't like the first guys install so they changed it all and charged me for their poor install. Then it still didn't work any better.

On my second month and they said all my high speed was used in 1 night so now I have no internet because their unlimited data is just not true unless you buy more high-speed tokens it won't work. If I cancel it will be a $400 charge. This internet company is a scam. Please don't trust them! I'm stuck with internet that doesn't work. We are just dumb for resubscribing to HughesNet after moving 5 hours away. They were the only service available in a rural area so we did. We had experienced their lack of integrity before but decided to give them another opportunity since we had been with them since 2011 (by the way that makes no difference to them). We upgraded to their Jupiter satellite system - the system is ok. Before we committed to that install we were told they would waive the $299.99 equipment fee and that it would have to be a manual adjustment as their system wouldn't allow an automatic adjustment (pretty dumb for 2025 - how antiquated is their system?). I got a case # and kept the information. As you might guess, when they processed our bill, they didn't give us a credit.

I'm now in the process of having that removed and have been told by 4 different people at Hughes that they can see Hughes waived the $299.99 fee and we'll take care of it. Well, they haven't. I've even been told that their system can only handle a $164 credit. I knew I was getting the runaround so I contacted the BBB and filed a complaint. They've helped me before with these people. I found after the fact that a simple hotspot through StraightTalk works even better than HughesNet for a rural area and after you buy the device, they charge $50/month for 100GB of data. Maybe it's too late for us at the moment but that may help someone else. They are a really bad company.

HughesNet advertises itself as the internet provider for rural areas. We live on the outskirts of town, and our services have been absolutely terrible. The most important thing for potential customers to know is that the company caps the monthly usage and then charges you for additional usage via "tokens." There are only two of us in our household, and we only use the internet for work, school, and a bit of AppleTV streaming. We are not gamers, yet our usage goes to zero around 10 days prior to our monthly renewal every single month, which means we need to buy tokens. Last weekend, we purchased $50 of tokens just so we could watch Severance, and that $50 lasted for only two days--we're not kidding!!! This is so ridiculous. It's a scam. There are better service providers out there. Do not sign up with HughesNet because you'll be stuck with inadequate services and a two-year commitment.

Since acquiring your service it has been an awful experience. We had the service at our house in Little Egg Harbor, NJ - the installer came in his beat up falling apart car like a hobo, he was also hours late. NOT a good first impression on doing business with your company! Then he was not able to install the service for some reason after I had to wait for him for hours and wait hours while he attempted to install the service. He was unable to get the service activated for some reason and had to come back. Costing me hundreds of dollars missing work between the two visits.

Finally, with the service activated, I would find that it is incredibly slow. YES, despite my own speed test and your speed tests coming up with good signal, I can barely load a YouTube Video and it takes way too long to load basic websites. When I run the hot spot off of my phone to my PC it is 10x faster and loads sites and videos as fast as it should be like any other internet service I have had in the past.

I called your company multiple times and a member of your team had me adjust some settings in your system online, there was no improvement. I knew that we were moving the service once my new place was completed up in Spotswood. Your representative confirmed that relocating the service to Spotswood would also be no charge when we had originally acquired the service over the phone. So I figured I would ride out the slow speeds until then assuming that the service/speed would improve in Spotswood as it is a more densely populated area. I have better luck with my phone service in Spotswood than I do in Little Egg Harbor if that meant anything.

I spoke with your representative on the phone to relocate the service, no issue there, except that you left your Dish on our roof in Little Egg Harbor. One of your techs came out to install the service in our BRAND NEW building in Spotswood. He was very hard to speak with for starters, then he said that he could not put the dish on the roof. I am not sure why, it seems like the best place for it, but he asked if he could put it mounted on the side of the building, I said okay. I was inside and I heard him drilling out there for 30 minutes, assuming he was getting the job done.

The tech came to me and said he could not install it, that he would need to put a pole in the ground and would have to come back tomorrow. He also told me that I would have to pay him cash directly for the pole, even after  I told him that your representative told me the relocation and installation was at no charge. He left and I went outside to find that he had mangled the side of our BRAND NEW building. He had put a bunch of randomly spaced holes and filled them with bulky and loose fitting bolts while denting the metal siding, as well as the metal on the corner of the building. Not only is the damage unsightly but these holes will cause leaks into the building.

I contacted your team immediately and shared with them what had happened. I was told it would be "escalated" to a case and I would receive a call back about the damage and about a new install day as I told them I did not want that Tech to work on my property again. I never received a call, we called back again, apparently there was no record of my case! Eventually we got a new install day, which was this morning.

For some reason the same tech arrived the next day, despite having cancelled the install with him when I called the day he messed up the building. I sent him away, I told him we cancelled the install with HIM. To boot I have lost days of internet service due to your tech's incompetence and have you prorated my bill? No.

With a new install day scheduled, This morning your tech arrived, it was the SAME TECH who damaged our building after we were assured that it would be a different Tech. I told him he's not supposed to be the tech to install and we were promised a different tech after he damaged our property. He said "I am the only one in the area". I wanted to send him away again but I have grown impatient with your poor service and I need to get back to work, which requires internet service. So I said "fine, go ahead". I suggested that he put the pole in a location about 12 ft from the building so it did not take up valuable patio space or have the signal and potential radiation too close to my bathroom and bed. He ended up putting the pole about 20", that's INCHES, away from the building in the most inconvenient spot that can possibly be chosen.

After nearly another 5 hours of my time wasted, we checked my PC to find the internet working, however it was again, incredibly slow. Even slower than it was in Little Egg Harbor. He claimed that "sometimes it takes a few days for the modem to work right", what?! That is ridiculous. I told him I will just call in, I had to leave and get to work and he was impossible to communicate with. I called in later in the day and after speaking with one of your representatives, there was no improvement, she said I would be transferred to account management and after 30 minutes on hold I hung up. I just went outside to inspect the dish again closely, I found the warning label on the dish that says "This Device emits radio frequency energy, keep 2 feet away from this point...."  and THAT is the FINAL STRAW. The Dish is about 20" from the building wall, the wall where my bathroom is and the wall where I sleep.

I would have cancelled the service immediately, but we were rushed into and tricked into a contract with your representative boasting this "savings" and that savings every other sentence to my father, who is a senior. Despite your service being much more expensive than the mainstream competitors, and much slower! In reality, I am not "SAVING" anything. Not time, money, nor stress, and now even further you are coming after my health by putting the dish too closely while it emits harmful radio frequencies. Closer than YOUR OWN warning label states. ALL OF THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

To prevent further stress, loss, and health issues due to your equipment, the following needs to happen to avoid potential lawsuits. Your dishes to be removed from BOTH of our Properties. The Service and bill cancelled, WAIVING the ridiculous $400 Cancellation fee. The expenses for the damages made to our building paid for by your company. I expect this to be resolved immediately or we will be taking legal action, we will give you to the end of the month.

Stay away if you can. Several alternatives available even in rural areas. Aside from weak and unreliable internet, and almost nonexistent customer service, they are essentially thieves. Tried to cancel service and they wanted to charge me $100 per unit, $200 total. So you have to pay for them to remove their own equipment. Alternatively, they actually advised me to "climb up on the roof" to disconnect device. Talk about idiotic and irresponsible customer service personnel. Was able to get them to send a technician to do removal for free. So, question is, if you call and make a stink, they remove for free? If you risk your life to remove equipment for them, it's also free?

We got the “new” HughesNet in March of 2024 and it was trouble from the start. So horribly slow that it was unusable. We called them and they tried to fix it remotely. That didn’t work so they sent out a technician because we only had it about twenty days. That fixed it for about two days and then it went back to what is was before. I called and they would try to fix it remotely. I gave up after trying to get it fixed. We mostly used our phones.

I finally called again in August 2024 and they determined that the internet was unusable. They gave us their service for free for the month of September 2024. They said the problem was a tower malfunction in our area and that it would be fixed in a couple of weeks. It never got fixed so in October I finally called them to quit. They charged us $325.00 for quitting their horrible service. I disputed the charge with my bank and told them what had happened. They didn’t see it my way. Corporations take care of corporations. Avoid this company. They charge too much and there is no service. I found out recently that Verizon had internet service in my area out here in the country and it actually works. Download speeds over 300 mb/sec and upload of 18 mb/sec.

I want to say that I did ask them about streaming and talked about it with the installer as well. My roommate and I have been very nice to them even through the frustration of going a full 2 months without television. I called them yesterday to cancel because we now have fiber optic which actually works and was helped by a very rude jerk. He tried to charge me $450 for cancellation fees when they should have been crediting us for the time we've had it and paid for. When I complain to him about the $450 he told me that I should have done better research. I guess better research means to research whether or not HughesNet was going to lie to you when you sign up.

Even though the HughesNet system never worked had I not been insulted by this jerk at HughesNet I would have still give them five stars only because most of the people I've dealt with are good people. If the jerk at HughesNet is reading this consider yourself lucky we did not have a face to face conversation. You know who you are. Peace.

First you tell me in order to get my business that it's unlimited high-speed internet; not once but twice. Think I'm kidding, listen to the recordings. Then the technician that came to my house smelled like he had smoked ** before he got there. My cable was already present before the technician arrived because Service Electric Cablevision had already installed it so no new cable needed to be run. All he did was connect it to the preexisting cable.

When I went on my roof to clean the gutters I found the plastic wrappers from the connecting ends of the dish that was installed that the technician was nice enough to leave behind. Then I find out I was charged for cable that was never run which amounts to theft which I never authorized. Plainly stated I would have thrown the technician out if he had actually told me I was being charged for something.

Then after weeks of interruptions and slow speed I call to find out the issue and am told that I was out of high-speed internet, whichever makes me beyond angry because I was lied to not once but twice to get me to sign up for service. Lastly, I have some arrogant condescending scumbag calling up and leaving a voicemail as if he's lecturing me and that your charges were correct without reviewing any account notes? Because if he had he would have never left the type of voicemail he did.

Finally, your actions warrant a complaint to the FCC and Better Business Bureau. And if there is any attempt to further bill me, state that my dispute with my credit card is legitimate, or place any derogatory reports against on any credit bureaus I will file a small claims lawsuit against your company and the president or corporate officers and subpoena them into a Pennsylvania Superior Court to hear this matter. As such the costs associated with defending the lawsuit will far exceed the fraudulent charges that your company is attempting to charge me with.

    To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this review with deep frustration and disappointment regarding the service I have received from HughesNet Internet Service Provider. My experience over the past several months has been nothing short of a nightmare. Firstly, HughesNet has repeatedly claimed that my household is using over 300GB of data within a month, a claim they have yet to substantiate or verify. We signed up for a plan that includes 100GB of data, and after reaching this limit, our internet is severely throttled. Despite this, HughesNet is alleging that we are somehow consuming an additional 200GB in the last 10 days of our billing cycle. This is utterly impossible since our devices are rendered practically unusable due to the throttled speeds.

There are frequent occurrences when one or both of our devices are unable to access the internet for extended periods. Curiously, when we call HughesNet customer support, the internet miraculously starts working again. This pattern is highly suspicious and suggests that HughesNet may be deliberately manipulating our service.

Moreover, HughesNet convinced us to purchase additional data by promising it would solve our issues. Yet, what is stopping them from continually slowing our data and then trying to sell us more? Where is the proof that we have actually used the purported amount of data? We have even canceled our Roku camera subscription to eliminate additional data downloads, and given the amount of time I work, it is simply not possible to use the amount of data HughesNet claims.

We have reached out to HughesNet customer support a total of three times within the last three months. Each time, they temporarily restore our internet speed, only to throttle it again within a week. This repetitive cycle is not only inconvenient but also suggests a serious flaw in their usage tracking system or a deliberate attempt to throttle services unfairly.

What is more infuriating is that between the throttled speeds and the purported excessive data usage, we are unable to make use of our internet for the purposes we need. How can we be expected to use data we can't access? This situation is beyond unreasonable. I demand that a HughesNet customer service specialist respond to this review with a clear explanation and proof of the alleged data usage. Additionally, if these issues cannot be rectified immediately, I expect to be released from my contract without any early termination fees, as HughesNet has failed to deliver the agreed-upon service, constituting a breach of contract. I truly hope this review catches the attention of someone who can resolve these issues promptly. My patience has worn thin, and my confidence in HughesNet’s ability to provide reliable service has been shattered.

    Respectfully,

I usually handle setting up new accounts but since he was home it was easier for him. He was told by the CS rep (who spoke terrible English) that he was not entering into a contract and if the service was not good enough where we were, we could cancel. These were both lies. We had the service for several months to give it a try but it was awful. It was barely fast enough to stream TV services much less anything else. The only thing it was good for was downloading updates to the Xbox and only because it was better than eating up our hotspot data on our phones as it was VERY slow.

My husband called to cancel service because it was terrible, because our line got cut and because we were moving and would no longer need the service. He was told he would have to fill out a complaint form about the service to get out of the contract and that they would send him the form but they never did. He was told by another CS rep it would be no problem to cancel. I have been checking the account to see whether it was canceled and they have been showing us as no money being due for a couple of weeks so I thought maybe it had been cancelled but no, today they charged our bank account again. So, my husband called and is now being told we have to pay $350 to get out of the contract.

I had HughesNet for eight years and recently cancelled. I owned my equipment, so there were no return issues. It is necessary to preface my concerns and my change of provider with the fact that I remotely work part time, making dependable connection absolutely necessary. Also, I recently added a Roku device to my TV. During my eight years of receiving service from HN, my bill was under $64 a month as of 2024. The only other provider in my area was charging much more. During most of my years with HN I felt that my service was satisfactory, but definitely not stellar. I worked around the inclement weather periods and occasional outages; but as the years passed, HN slowly descended into the abyss.

Prior to purchasing my Roku device, I called HN to ask if my plan needed upgrading for TV service. The rep said that my current plan was adequate. I purchased the Roku device. Service was acceptable for a few months. Thereafter my Net started going up and down. The TV began to buffer at random times. I couldn’t understand why, after a few months of adequate connectivity using both the Roku and my desktop, that I was either being throttled, or was in need of an upgrade. I called HN on two different occasions. I spoke to two different foreigners, who talked so rapidly with accents, that I had to ask them to repeat their statements several times. On the second call, it was advised that I upgrade. My bill would have increased to about $103 per month. I consented to upgrading, but saw no improvement. The Net was slower, would not connect to some sites, and went up and down more frequently than before.

After less than two weeks of upgraded usage, I was throttled. There was no way that I used so much data to account for it. It was at that point, that I suspected deceptive practices. I never fell for the purchasing-token scam, so I made a decision to fire HN, and hire the other provider that, with additional perks, promoted $60 less per month than HN, for the same number of GBs. HN’s service became intolerable a few months after I added Roku. I alleged that HN caught on to the fact that I was operating my desktop and my TV at the lower monthly rate. Upon discovery, they constantly throttled, and forced me to upgrade to subpar service for $40 more per month.

One reason given me for poor connectivity was that the Net slowed during high traffic periods. I asserted that if there wasn’t enough bandwidth for all their customers, HN was the one who needed upgrading. On a lighter note, I extend kudos to the rep who assisted me with cancelling. He spoke excellent English, and genuinely wanted to hear my complaints. After a pleasant lengthy phone call, I received a cancellation confirmation, and a small refund within two days.

You would think that an upstanding company would fall all over themselves to correct their mistake, but not Hughes net. I have spoken on the phone with them multiple times as well as emailed their “executive customer care” supervisor numerous times and have gotten zero results. All they will say is initiate the refund through PNC. PNC said too much time has passed.

DO NOT GET THIS INTERNET SERVICE! HughesNet was the only option available for where I was living at the time. From the day of installation, my speeds were slow and video streaming lagged tremendously. That was just with my cell phone and living room television connected. I was paying $121.88 a month for 50G. Outrageous prices for not near enough data to do anything with. Horrible experience when I went to terminate my contract as well. Paid $250 for early termination because we had been with them for over a year and moved. Turned in everything I was told needed to be returned so we wouldn’t get charged the month we terminated our contract. 5 months later they bill me for a part I was never told to return and had no way of returning. $219 taken out of my account with no prior authorization. 5 MONTHS LATER!

Called customer service and was told they wouldn’t refund my money because I hadn’t returned the part. It was on the roof of a house I no longer lived at and said I’d have to call a technician to get it taken down which would be an extra $150 to which I said absolutely not. Told them I was filing a dispute with my bank over the unauthorized charge. Overall horrible experience and everyone I know who has dealt with them have had crappy experiences as well.

The customer service is awful, and refused to send me the return boxes, I need them to send back equipment, when I asked for the mailing address to ship it back, they said I had to write it down. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!! We live in the country and have a primary internet service that I use to work from home. Since our primary service was not reliable, we needed a backup service that we know is slower but would at least provide coverage when (not if) our primary provider went down. Enter HughesNet. From the get-go, HughesNet service was consistently so slow (below 5 mbps), that we had to repeatedly call for service to be able to even pull up a website. Each time, calling the wretched main HughesNet number and being transferred and having to repeat the reason for our call many times.

Finally, after 6 calls for technical support and 2 technical service visits over a 6 month period, in January 2024 we decided we had had enough and called HughesNet to cancel our service when we tried again to use our service and couldn't access Google because speeds was 2.94 mbps that day. We were told that we would have a $325 early cancellation fee due to our contract with them. WHAT? I asked them to hold their end of the bargain, and I would hold mine, i.e. - providing service that works. Technically, the contract has already been broken by them, not me. The agent said he will send a technician to see if they could fix it for me (for the 3rd time) and if he could not, they would waive the cancellation fee.

On February 6th, the technician arrived and he could not get speeds fast enough for us to use it, so he got permission from the office to take our equipment because we want to cancel. He took the dish from the roof and both boxes from our house. On February 14th, I called to make sure they had our account cancelled and they told me it was not, but said they processed the cancellation that day and would waive the early termination fee. On March 10th, we got another monthly charge from HughesNet, even though we hadn't had equipment in over a month. On this day, I spent 90 MINUTES on the phone trying to get a refund of this monthly charge while each of the 4 people I talked to reminded me about the $325 early cancellation fee and did not listen to the details of my story -- just kept asking questions about things I had just told them.

Some things said to me during this 90 minute waste of my time was, "I see here in the notes that you have subscribed to Starlink?"; "You were supposed to send back your equipment in a box we send you."; "Since you are just cancelling today, we will not refund this charge."; "If you want to reactivate your service, we will waive the reactivation fee."; "The $325 was part of your contract with us."

At one point I even hung up the phone because the guy was telling me they were going to send me an empty box to return my equipment and I kept telling him that they already took it... He told me to just return the empty box when I get it. WHAT?? As I sat there on hold for an extended period making my grocery list, I decided that I would just be disputing the charge with my credit card company. At the end of the call, they SAID they processed a refund and waived the cancellation fee. I have a confirmation number for that call. We will see.... Meanwhile, we DO have Starlink now and it is proving to be both fast AND reliable! What a concept. Highly recommend.

This is as fair as I can make it ... I have had the HughesNet Fusion service for nearly one year. It's nearly $200/month. It was OK, only because they use cellular towers to help un-stink the latency, and get it down at least to cellular speeds, which are 30-60ms on average. Without that, the latency runs in the 600-800ms range which is a big problem. With an ISP, there are 4 major factors to consider: cost, speed, reliability, and support.

COST. $200/month for mediocre Internet? Up to you, if you think that's a good deal or not. They insist on 2-year contracts which require large fees ($600) to get out of it, and a return of their equipment on your dime. For many people that have found their service unworkable and want out, this is a major point of failure.

SPEED. There are 3 factors for speed: latency, upload, download. If you connect to a workplace - like many more people do now post-covid - you know it's a problem if you type or click and 5-10 seconds later the remote system processes the response. Big problem. You can't work that way. But that is what 600ms latency causes. On the uploads, HN can be as slow as 1Mbps and on a good day, up to 5Mbps. If you have latency in the triple digits, combined with slow uploads you'll notice your VoIP conversations have dropouts on your (upload) end. Now, where HN is much better is on downloads. There it is 15-50Mbps on average. Even so, HN won't perform well enough for a Zoom video. You will have pixelation and dropouts to the point it's not workable.

RELIABILITY. Well, with the above factors/limitations in mind, I have not had much problem with outages or having to reset the equipment to get it to work, like I have to do 2-3 times/week for my cellular router/modem. But there are low points with HN, at times mid-evening, the prime streaming time, and you cannot stream without buffering.

SERVICE. Their customer service is poor. Your initial contact is to a call-taker in some foreign country. They cannot help with anything. They just send you to someone else, and you have to start over with explanations. Worse, they often can't fix anything via phone, and insist on a call-out to freelance service techs - some of whom are unfamiliar with the HN products - and tack a $150 service fee onto your bill. Their help forum is a snake pit, moderated by HN or HN-paid staff with their caustic dismissals of unfavorable posts, and a lot of helpless ranting about problems without solutions.

CONCLUSION: in the past, there were few options for rural people or others without wired ISP options, and HN was one of the few. Now with the advent and nationwide coverage of Starlink, we fortunately have a better one .. provided that you don't live in a dense forest with tall trees, in which case Starlink is a no-go. IMO the days of HEO (high earth orbit) type satellites - such as the ones HN uses - are numbered. And if so .. I say good riddance to them. Good riddance to HughesNet also, especially if the only way they can stay in business is long-term contracts and exorbitant cancellation fees. In an age where we increasingly pay more for less, that's something none of us needs.

You've got to set your TV on the lowest resolution or the video will stop every 30 seconds to try to buffer. And even that doesn't help. The service was just intolerable. I’m being honest. The speed of the internet is very slow. They promise fast speeds but never deliver. The cost is very expensive and customer service is the worst. If a Hughesnet supervisor wishes to listen to my conversation today Nov. 2, 2023 at approximately 2:00pm please do. My Opinion.

Spoke to the most pushy sales rep today that I have ever dealt with in my life. Allen in Missouri, who pushed forward with the sale no matter how many times I told him No, that I wasn't interested in moving forward. He just talking, insisting he told me he's setting me up with service so that's what we're doing. He said that's fine, I don't need an email address, I don't need a backup phone number. I said no repeatedly, but he just kept talking until finally asking for my credit card number repeatedly. This guy would not take no for an answer. Who does this company hire. WOW!!

Trying to cancel Hughesnet is another major ordeal. This company is terrible. After multiple calls to their customer service desk, where they barely speak English....still can't get my service cancelled. I can't wait to be done with Hughesnet

I had Dish Satellite internet service for years. I live in a rural area so Dish was the only choice at the time. I was happy with it for the most part, slow but worked even when my data plan ran out. After about 8 years my equipment quit working so I called Dish. They talked me into switching to Hughesnet, said it was a better service so I switched. Had problems on day one, instillation day. The first employee they sent couldn't get a signal, ended up putting the dish right by our porch in a bad spot. On top of that we had to move our solar panels because of dish placement. Still no signal. He left after several hours, he was either new or incompetent or both. They sent a new tech who showed up fairly quickly and finally got us up and running. For the same price as Dish we got a 30 gig data plan instead of 50 gig with Dish. Our 30 gig runs out in 5 days and the limited internet we get after that is way worse than Dish.

The sad part is they sucker you into a 2 year plan that you can't get out of without paying a huge-net fee. Do not get this service, it makes me mad on a daily basis when I can't do simple things like social media except the meager 5 days I get my 30 gigs. Save your money. You are better off without the internet than to deal with these crooks who prey on the people who love living in the country.

This is based on my personal experience with Hughes Net from March 2019 to September 2023. Customer Service: All Hughes Net support is below sub-standard. They cannot keep their story straight (double talk), do not follow through (unless they are charging you!), are rude, arrogant or clueless, say they are looking into something but you are on hold 10- 15 minutes later then say wait while they look into it, and often yell when they do not get their way. Always excessive wait times (upwards of 50 minutes) to speak with a Manager to solve basic problems representative should be able to answer.

Technical/ billing: They change the contract when they do not live up to it. They find loopholes to give you the least service for most charge. Except for Tier #3 support, they have no clue how satellite internet or internet works. They give you multiple technical excuses until they find what "sticks" with the customer vs finding the problem. Upload can dip as low as 356 kBps at the same time download as high as 30 MBps, which causes link issues unless you are doing like Netflix. Other apps will suck your monthly (15, 25, 50 GB) data allowance then charge you more money or dial your speed back to DSL speeds (128- 256 kBps up/ 5 MBps down). Overall, go with ViaSat or Starlink! If you are commercial, even more reason to avoid HughesNet. They are worse than the low point of Comcast.

Firstly they have the worst service for internet, phone and streaming. Then you have to deal with the incompetent, inept, runaround reps. Nasty, rude and waste your time arguing with the customers. I can't even get away from them easily and in a good way. They have to make everything so difficult. First they said you're on a month to month service plan and you can cancel anytime. I signed no service agreement with them and there was no charge to cancel. To try the services out. Well of course they can't do anything right. They are now trying to tell me I have to pay a early disconnection fee? Are you kidding? So unorganized, so messed up and mixed up company. 300.00 plus dollars is owed. No way this will happen. They are unethical and it's illegal. I will file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and they will be sorry for treating me the way they did. What a dysfunctional company.

When I called to close the account they said, "You have no bill and you owe nothing. Just return the equipment" which I did and they took forever to come pick it up. Everything is a trial and tribulation with this company. I hate them. They are horrible and despicable. I would tell anyone do not use them ever. You will go crazy with the horrible agents and the terrible services they try to provide. It took me 3 months for them to get my ACP put on my account. Calling and calling for days and weeks. They drop the ball at every turn. If they try to come after me for that disconnect fee I will dispute it and they will never get it. Don't use them.

I was promised a strong non-interrupted service. Well, that is far from the truth as possibly could be. With a call or two a week to find out why I don’t have service and service calls and equipment changes four months into the service. I couldn’t still download or stream a show. At this time I felt I needed to go back to a hard wired service so canceling my account is a continuation of the problems they're giving me. After withdrawing $355 from my account without permission calling it a contract termination fee for a service they could not supply me. I feel totally robbed and cheated. I hope all will beware of this fraudulent company.

I paid upfront for my equipment. I started the service two months ago. The internet speed was a fraction of what was advertised. The connection would come and go. Speeds were average of 2 upload and 10 download. It was nothing close to the speeds and monthly service that I was paying for. Streaming was nearly impossible. Internet was agonizingly slow. I called to cancel the service and told that I have a 2-year agreement. I signed nothing to begin the service and was never informed of the 2-year commitment. I was referred to the agreement after I attempted to cancel the service. I will inform the state AG since they are insisting on payment of the $400 cancellation fee even though I have only had the service for two months and paid for the equipment in advance.

SLOW, SLOW, SLOW, continually buffers. Called to cancel my account and they said they would charge me $130 to cancel. I told them I would contest this if the charge shows up on my credit card. The company charged my cc $130. The customer service rep was extremely rude and hung up on me before letting me know where to return the modem, etc. Anyone looking at this service, BEWARE!

Absolutely the worst internet I have ever had!!! It never worked properly, cannot not stream TV for one TV or won't even run a cell phones wifi. My hot spot with my cell phone has better internet. Take my review as a warning and go with another company. The charges more than double the second month of service and this company is charging me a $400 cancellation fee. I cancelled service 8 hours after the 30 days that's ridiculous and of course and manger was not available to speak with me. I had to cancel my credit card just to keep them from continually to bill me.

June 2023 - DON’T DO IT!! HughesNet should be considered scammers!! 4 years of the most horrible service I’ve ever experienced. I don’t mind paying for a service I can use and I even expected have a few hiccups now and then BUT HughesNet is a joke. I live alone, no gaming, I have a laptop that I use MAYBE twice a week to Google something, my cell phone has unlimited data (so I don’t need it for that), but I do like to watch movies. Well in 4 years I wasn’t able to watch a movie without it buffering every 5 minutes so therefore I was NEVER able to watch an entire movie!! In 4 years!! NEVER!! That’s sad.

Every time I’d call to cancel over the years I would be threatened with “You’ll have to pay an early cancellation fee!” Cancellation fee for what?? What service?? How about HughesNet credit me for their “contracted services” that they DID NOT PROVIDE!! Then when I finally had enough and was no longer under contract I cancelled the unusable service. They said on 4/22 “We will mail you out prepaid postage boxes to return our equipment.” Two and a half weeks later no boxes. Called them again on 5/12 and I was told “Sorry they didn’t mail the boxes. I’ll have them mailed out to you on 5/27.” In the back of my mind I thought “Why 5/27?, that’s strange.”

I received the boxes on 5/30. My son took down the equipment as per detailed instructions given. I packaged up the boxes and brought them to the UPS Store (1 hour away, I live in a rural area) on 6/2. I checked my UPS tracking numbers today and the equipment was received by the company yesterday. So I know that it will most likely take at least 7-10 days to update my account and remove the $718.14 charged to me for their equipment. I felt confident that the nightmare with HughesNet was finally over. Not so fast….I get home an hour later to find a letter in my mailbox from a collection agency!! Yep a collection agency!! Ironically the date that HughesNet turned me into the collection agency was 5/27!! The same day they said they were mailing out the boxes to return the equipment. Coincidence?? Not a chance in hell!!

They were trying to distort money from me even though I was the one that kept calling to make sure boxes were sent to me and that everything was taken care of on my end. My advice to anyone thinking about getting HughesNet service DO NOT DO IT!! I did finally reach a customer service representative that seemed to be very helpful and assured me that I would be credited for the equipment and that she would let the collection agency know that it was a mistake. I did call the collection agency myself and let them know what was going on. I will wait 5-7 days to check once again to make sure all of this is taken care of and nothing comes up on my credit report. This is so frustrating. Never again!! What an absolute nightmare!!

Update 6/21/2023 - called the collection agency and was told that I still owe HughesNet $61 REALLY?? I called HughesNet. This rude customer service MANAGER says “Yeah we got your equipment back and you were given a credit but you still owe us $61." She gave me some ** about some type of fee from months ago. At this point I said “You know what I’d rather just pay this $61 just to have the peace of mind knowing that I’ll be done with HughesNet forever!!” Peace out ✌.

Customer Service: If you ask to be elevated they make you sit on hold then will tell you no supervisor is available. If I still want to talk with a supervisor leave my number to be ignored and forgotten about. Reliability: Very rarely down. If they are down they will not answer the help line. Please stay on the line. Your call is important to us but not important enough for us to answer your call. Speed: The 25mbps speeds are a lie. On an average day my speeds hits 600Kbps. The data cap sucks but with speeds in the kilobyte range I never hit it. With Gen3 I hit it regularly and HughesNet then wants to charge me to reset my data usage. Value: Overall no internet is better than hughesnet.
