What is Glo Fiber?

Glo Fiber (formerly Horizon Telcom in Ohio) is a fiber-optic internet, TV and phone provider. It’s owned by Shenandoah Telecommunications Company, which was founded in 1902. Glo Fiber delivers fiber-to-the-home service with unlimited data, no contracts and local customer service agents.

As of publishing, Glo Fiber residential services are available in parts of six U.S. states. It uses an all-fiber network with symmetrical speeds — meaning uploads are just as fast as downloads — which helps with high-bandwidth activities like streaming, online gaming and remote work. Glo Fiber also offers add-ons to help your Wi-Fi reach farther, like mesh systems for full-home coverage and outdoor Wi-Fi.

How does Glo Fiber work?

Glo Fiber uses fiber-to-the-home technology, which means fiber-optic cable runs directly to your house instead of stopping at the curb or a neighborhood box. This setup delivers faster and more reliable speeds, especially for activities like streaming, gaming and video calls.

Here’s what to expect during setup:

  • Order service: You can sign up online or by phone.
  • Install the connection: A technician connects your home to the fiber network and tests the signal.
  • Repair any damage: If the installation disrupts your lawn or driveway, Glo Fiber will restore it.
  • Set up your equipment: A network terminal is installed inside your home. You can use your own router or rent Glo Fiber’s mesh Wi-Fi system for better coverage throughout your home.

GloFiber was fantastical until they were bought by Shentel, which is the worst internet service I have ever experienced. The last two years GloFiber changed their price and service structure without notifying existing customers. I had originally purchased their legacy plan of 1.8Gbps for $100 per month. However, they got rid of that plan and throttled my speeds to their next lowest plan of 1Gbps (offered at $80 per month) but kept charging me the legacy $100. For two years, they collected an additional $20 each month from me without any notification.

I called them on their throttling of my speed to the 1Gbps and had 4 open technical support tickets to rectify. Working in the cybersecurity field, I suspected they were purposely throttling and caught them doing so multiple times. I even showed the on-site tech who escalated the ticket. Not once, did they offer to put me at the lower rate or provide an explanation as to why the line in my house was pulling only 60% of what I was paying for. I disconnected their service and was told the account was settled; only to receive a collection notice 4 months later with zero attempt to reach out to me about any overdue close-out fees/payment. I never thought a service could be worse than Comcast, but they set a whole new standard of low.

Employees were horrible, they threatened me personally, trashed our home while staying for work. Disrespectful, threatening, terrified me personally. Destroyed the home they were staying in. I would be terrified to have them on my job site. Their employees are not good people; they were horrible to deal with, they threatened not to leave the home, left misinformed and fraudulent reviews. Terrible company and scary, threatening employees.
