UHC erroneously flagged my account and has refused to pay my medical bills since February 2024. It has caused terrible problems with my Pain Management group in Bethesda Maryland and they not only forced me to pay $1,900 out of pocket but they refused to make additional appointments. I have been on long term disability since 2008 with terrible chronic pain and fatigue due to several autoimmune illnesses. Cervical and lumbar oblations and epidurals have been the only effective means aside from medication to reduce this pain in order to get out of bed each day. Thus, these surgical treatments are extremely overdue only due to the incompetence of UHC’s personnel.

Consequently, both my upper extremities specifically my arms and hands as well as my cervical spine have tremendous nerve pain, burning, weakness, making it too difficult to use them for more than an hour or two each day. This adds insult to injury after I’ve spent 13 years in bed plus another almost three years with limited daily function hardly ever leaving my house except for medical appointments. My health has improved some since November 2023, however, due to months of errors made by UHC, I cannot get out of bed once again. It is unbearably disheartening to once again be incapacitated all due to my healthcare provider.

I met my deductible this year & my HSA is depleted. They pay nothing. I have this only for catastrophic hospitalization. They’re horrible!! The worst I’ve ever had. $193 for 3 months of a med I need for life.

Very difficult to get into any good doctors with this insurance. Good doctors don't accept this insurance for a reason; UHC is a nightmare to work with, cutthroat. UHC makes it very difficult even for a user to make a claim on their website. You have to verify your email address every time you make a claim. "Why" you may ask? For absolutely no reason. They already know your email address. The reason they do it is so their automated system can take an unreasonably long time to give you the confirmation code. By the time you get it, 30 minutes after you click the button, you've logged out of MYUHC.com and have to start the process over. They make it almost impossible for you to file your own claims. That's pretty much a good indicator of how they do all of their business.

It's Aug 2024 and don't be surprised if you get a strange letter saying something may not have been covered from yrs back and an event number and say call. That someone else may have to pay this bill. They are a very good insurance company at first, but just wait. You'll see.

Any time I decided to change to new provider they do not accept new patients even is in their own list!!! In other words there is only one that you select You get stuck forever. The lab that they have contract with is Quest which they have a so much issues with this lab. So so ready to change this health plan. Can only give them one star. Is too good for them. I would definitely consider being insured by UHC as very last option. It's very difficult to get a positive authorization on any medication prescribed to you. The insurance itself is outrageous, with very expensive co pays and the deductible is through the roof. If I could give them a negative 10 stars I would..

This review doesn't matter because the government is too weak to control these godforsaken insurance companies with no moral compass. It's a disgrace. But yeah, UHC lied to me, stole from me, and jerked me around for almost a year before passing me off to their minions at Naviguard to finally cut the cord and tell me I had no recourse and to stop trying. The CEO of UHC made $23M last year and they can't work with me to support an $800 out of pocket expense that negatively impacts my family financially. You should be ashamed.

The worst health care provider period. We’re trying to get our company to switch from them and I think it’s gonna happen, we can only pray they look elsewhere. They do shady stuff all the time to get you irritated in hopes you don’t go to the doctor. They make your experience miserable when dealing with anything that has to do with a surgery. For instance, I was hurting in my knee and could barely walk. Went to the doctor and he referred me to a specialist. It took them TWO MONTHS for the insurance company to approve to have it scope. I was in level 10 pain for those 2 months. I had it scoped and I had a severe torn meniscus. After surgery it was later found I had a broken bone in my knee that looked like a toothpick and a ACL that was healing wrong. This healthcare provider was trying to save money that they let a PAYING CUSTOMER GO IN PAIN FOR 2 MONTHS. I was out of work for THREE MONTHS…was only getting paid $333 a week, to pay my bills.

$1,300 a month was what I was making, but when I’m working I make more than that in a week. I gained a lot of weight while I was off, nearly 50 years old, they denied the shot that’s helping everybody lose weight, you can only get it when you’re pre diabetic. My brother and 2 sisters all got diabetes early 50’s….I had to go to a place and pay out of pocket with no insurance $229. I lost 35lbs and all my numbers started looking good. Got off the shot and gained 16lbs back in 1 month and I’m not a big eater. My doctor sent in prescription for the shot to my insurance…they denied me again. And what those idiots don’t understand, is when I get diabetes since my chances is higher, just think of the money they're gonna spend on medicine and other doctor trips. Listen big companies stay away from this horrible healthcare provider.

I have only had to have a statement with hospital information and inpatient days of admitting and discharge. Now they change their requirements each time I call and refuse to pay my claim without a summary of hospital room charges which was never required before. My hospital was hacked and 3 months later don’t have any room charges for me to receive. They have not filed my insurance so they have nothing either. I also canceled my auto pay on their account and they took the payment out and refuse to return it. I want nothing else to do with this company and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. They told me I had to stay with their insurance for a full year until I could cancel. Now I owe over 1,500. They paid 60 dollars of my bill for recent blood work and tests. Not only are they refusing to let me cancel, and not paying for anything (or paying as little as they can), the customer service representatives run you in circles. When it comes to mental health coverage (therapy, neuro-psych testing, pediatric Occupational Therapy for ADHD), in the state of Washington, I couldn't be more disappointed with UHC. I spent weeks searching for in-network providers on my own and was told by a UHC representative that they did not cover neuro-psych testing in network and I would have to find an out of network provider. We paid close to $3000 out of pocket to have my kids rested. When I submitted my out-of-network claim, only $1100 was applied to my deductible because it's what I would have been allowed had I went with an in-network provider. I told the claims rep I was told there were no in-network providers as it wasn't a covered benefit.

She told me it was a covered benefit and there were likely in-network providers. But if I couldn't find one, I could request a Gap Exception Request for an OON provider to be reimbursed at In-Network rates. But, you can't submit it retroactively and there is no appeals process for this, she told me. After our neuro-psych assessments of our 2 young kids, we were referred to Occupational Therapy and behavioral therapy. Again, I spent weeks on my own trying to find a providers. I was told by several that they don't contract with UHC because they are very difficult to deal with. I went back to UHC and asked them for help finding in-network providers.

Of the 3 OTs they provided contact info for, I discovered one was actually a radiologist, one was actually a nephrologist, and the 3rd wasn't accepting new patients. So they recommended I submit a Gap Exception Request for that. They requested our pediatrician submit it since it had to come from an IN provider. I was told it would take 7-10 days to process and I would have to pay OOP at OON rates until Gap Exception was approved, and again, no appeal process and no Request for retroactive reimbursement. And only a part of what I would pay would be applied to our deductible.

Well, after a week of trying to get the pediatrician to submit paperwork, they call me and tell me that UHC is telling me they need to request Prior Authorization for services before they can even submit the Gap Exception request. And Prior Authorization takes up to 14 days to process. WHY WOULD THEY NOT HAVE TOLD ME THAT DURING ANY OF OUR MANY MANY CONVERSATIONS??? By the time I get all the paperwork submitted and processed the providers probably won't have availability for us anymore! In the meantime, I'm dealing with my 8-year-old's anxiety, which brings him to tears, and my 6-year-old's frequent violent meltdowns that have us all on edge. I feel completely hopeless and at my wit's end. We are not millionaires and can't afford to shell out the thousands of dollars we would spend on out-of-network care. I can't wait for November when we get to switch back to Blue Cross!

The service is good and the coverage is quite decent compared to other medical insurance. I liked that it included dental and eye insurance. However, they are thieves and liars. First, you try to communicate with them and they only move you from department to department, they promise to fix your problem and they never communicate with you. To make matters worse and this is really one of the few reasons for my bad review, I paid for a full year of insurance, and at the last minute, they told me that they changed their policy and they stole 20 days from my medical insurance plan. I've been locked up at home for 20 days (my only vacation days!) because I didn't have insurance until the other one I bought started.

I have called them to politely complain about this "mistake" several times and they only make false promises or tell me they don´t know instead of taking care of my issue. This is making fun of the consumer who pays their salaries. On top of that, it is illegal not to have health insurance! I am very angry with them. They are very dishonest.

Updated on 12/05/2024: I've had UHC since 2008. All was good for a while, and in the past 2 or 3 years I don't recognize them. They show unbridled scorn for their customers. Last year I moved and there was an error in my address and I was dumped off their rolls without notice. They say they sent letters with no response, but they have my email and phone which go with me. I just replaced them with a better plan at half the cost. They love to take your money and not pay out as they are required. Nothing but greed and arrogance.

Original Review: If I could rate a negative number of stars it would be a minus 5. In my opinion they are just plain evil. This company will raise your blood pressure. I have had UHC/AARP medicare supplement since around 2010. At first I was very happy with them, but now I don't know if I can stay with them. They are dishonest and arrogant to say the least. They dropped me from my Rx plan without notice after I moved that weren't forwarded on time. They have my email and cell phone if they wanted to contact me.

These weren't changed with the move. You can't speak to any department above a front line supervisor, and the upper echelons of this company are totally heartless. All they do is lie like a rug and bomb you with useless paper mail and don't stop when told to. I could go on and on but they aren't worth my time. Stay away and save yourself.

I go through the verification process with the automated machine. A lady from customer service answers and asks more questions then “thanks me” for being fully verified with the system. All I’m trying to do is change my phone number. She tells me that she’s going to have to transfer me to tech support. WHHHHY!???

So I wait for what seems like five minutes or longer. Whatever, I need to get this done. So I wait! She comes back online to me and says she has tech support on the line. MIND YOU THIS IS A WARM TRANSFER. Which means it’s not a cold call to another department. She (customer service agent) should have given all the information to the next agent. While making SURE to let her (tech support) know that I’ve ALREADY BEEN FULLY VERIFIED. So she get off the line and here I am with the next agent. She goes to ask me 9 more verification questions…. WTH! Are you dumb!! So I ask how many questions is it cause this is overkill at this point?! Like seriously! She tells me there is 8 for what I’m doing. Crazy!!

So I comply but I’m not happy about it. She then goes to tell me AFTER ALL I JUST WENT THROUGH. “Now I’ll need you to confirm your email address so I can send you a code that you have to VERIFY." I almost threw up! Where do they find these people.. Someone really dropped the ball on this and this is what you’re teaching the agent EWWW!!! Disgusting and very disappointing. I have AARP/Medicare Advantage through United Healthcare and this is THE WORST insurance company. If you are Medicare, do yourself a favor and choose another insurance company. You’re probably better off doing a supplemental insurance with Medicare parts A and B. I hope this review saves you unnecessary stress. First, UHC pays nearly nothing for PT. Also, it’s like pulling teeth to get them to give you approval for an additional six sessions. My PT is dropping UHC because of this, and because they pay almost nothing for their expert services. And dental? Forget about it. Their customer service is based in Philippines and they DON’T CARE about you. They lie, put you on hold for 20 minutes while saying they are looking for a supervisor, then never come back on the line and you finally hang up after holding for 20 mins and call back, only to find that the previous CSR hadn’t even taken notes.

I wish I had a dollar for every time this happened to me. Additionally, they are very flippant, some barely speak English, and literally ignore your request to transfer them to the other departments. ABSOLUTE WORST. The only reason I didn’t give them just a one-star rating is because I did have one or two people who actually did help me. Tracy with the national service team was great and went above and beyond. And a young man I believe named Wendell. The third person who did her job was a young lady in the Philippines named Janine. I’ve probably spoken with 30 different people. That’s how bad their customer service is. Make a different choice. You’ll be glad you did.

The nurse I spoke to was very nice, explained well, but then proceeded to give me the outdated (as of March, 2024) protocol for what I needed to do following a positive test, including stating that I had to have several negative Covid tests prior to return to normalcy. Having just read the CDC guidelines I knew she was incorrect, and advised her that it was not what I had just read. She adamantly disagreed.

Yesterday I spoke to my doctor and today went online to simply send an email to advise that the information being given out to me previously was out of date. However, United Health Care had changed my phone number on their website so I couldn't login. I contacted the number listed, but after going through the usual bot frustration I reached a gentleman who couldn't help me, but put me on hold to reach someone else. No one could help with the original reason I called. I listened to the woman for awhile but by the time she told me that she was sending an access code to my email so I could re-confirm, I had had enough.

It is a sad state indeed when nurses aren't aware of CDC guidelines for Covid which changed four months previous, when the website alters your personal information, and when it takes over fifteen minutes to attempt to just provide a message to United Health Care. This is a level of incompetence that is beyond me for a major healthcare group. PS: Covid tests aren't even available in my (rural) area anymore, so her erroneous advice would have been impossible to follow.

Every single thing is an issue with them I have to call them back constantly to get information because they refuse to just do it right the first time or god forbid communicate what’s going on. It’s been not only frustrating for me but for my therapist and dentist offices as well trying to get a straight answer from them and constantly having to do conference calls with them because none of the customer service reps know what they’re talking about. Customer service is a nightmare. We had to read to them a letter THEY sent about switching my provider because they didn’t change it when originally asked and we spent half an hour on a conference call with them figuring out why they were having such a hard time doing the *one* thing they were asked to do in the 5 times I called them previously. Switching back to Kaiser as soon as I possibly can.

First of all, I could NOT understand 2 out of 3 customer service representatives I called yesterday because of the thick accents. One had loud background noise like kids and pets so he kept repeating what I said like he didn't understand what I kept telling him. The 2nd guy kept arguing with me when I asked for a supervisor and never put me through to one. I hung up on him. Number 3 was finally going to put me through. By then, I had a headache.

There has been a shortage of ** 3.0 MG for a long time. I used to get 3 months supply at a time, then it went to 1 month. My HEB pharmacy in San Antonio told me last week that now no HEB pharmacy in Texas has 3.0 MG. As of yesterday, I hope I got one of only THREE boxes left of the 1.5 MG ** at HEB. The pre-approval has to go through in time so I can switch doses. I originally asked a week ago if insurance would pay for 2 boxes of 1.5 MG at a time to equal my 3.0 dose I need. I got the run around for a week until yesterday I found out my pharmacy only had 3 boxes of the 1.5mg. Optima RX, United Healthcare's mailing pharmacy, is out of all doses of **.

Optima RX has ** for some reason when lots of pharmacies are out of it. But, I would need PRE-APPROVAL to switch to it, too. My pharmacy told me that insurance companies are FINALLY starting to deny approval of diabetic meds for just weight loss. Really? It took this chain reaction of shortages of diabetic meds for insurance companies to begin to understand that ONLY DIABETICS should be getting prescriptions for it?

And, United Healthcare will not approve letting me get two of the 1.5 mg ** to equal the 3.0 mg dose I've been on that works to keep my a1c normal!!! Doesn't matter now, the 1.5 MG doses are almost gone.

The insurance doctor keeps having me have more mediocre test run trying to prove the sleep apnea is the problem. It seems as though the insurance company is doing everything they can to deny my claim. This is very very poor insurance coverage. I have to say without a doubt United Healthcare is the worst insurance. They have gone from having your back to greedy, corrupt, and price gouging their customers instead of covering the important things you need when you need them which is why you choose their insurance company in the first place. I'm Disabled and on Social Security Disability and Have a Autoimmune Neuromuscular Disease and Spinal issues and need an important CT done and instead of covering it like an insurance is supposed to do they wanted to profit off Me instead of the tune of $250 which mind you I barely make enough to survive which includes barely keeping a roof over My head and they have gotten greedy and look to profit off Me with what little money I have left instead of doing what we get insurance in the first place to protect us. Tsk tsk.

Going with United Healthcare was the biggest mistake I have ever made with health insurance. They have become greedy and are self serving. They care only for themselves and not serve the customers' interest or care about their well-beings as they claim and will be talking to My health insurance broker to find a insurance that actually has My interest and protection at heart which is why you choose them in the first place, instead of profiting off of Me Shirking their responsibilities and only see Me as a dollar sign. More specific Governor Phil Murphy to defund UHC as an HMO in NJ), I'm saying this because by the end of this month I'm cutting UHC for good. 5/11/24 I got an X-ray and a order for 3 root canals to be done by a professional registered with the State of New Jersey Board of Dentistry. UHC didn't cover any of them. I managed to get 2 done but they refused to pay my dentist and made up every reason in the book. "Lack of Narrative", "Missing Aftercare Details", and "Poor Prognosis". About to file a lawsuit against them. UHC for 2 months allowed my teeth to get infected spreading to my right ear and right side of my brain. I've been stuttering my speech and thought a lot since waiting all this time. I struggled so much I couldn't go to work multiple days and lost pay.

UHC, Their state and government funded by NJfamilycare and they refused and claimed in THEIR professional opinion under the code "Poor Prognosis" that my tooth can't be saved. I went to 3 different dentists to examine my one to tooth. They each claimed they could do it. DO NOT use UnitedHealth. They do not care for their people. I explained this to one and stated on their member services line that I'm considering legal action, they hung up and started screening my calls to a different person not even stating my name at the start of the call which they usually ask you to verify first, but already knowing it's me. Their dental services was secretly on the other line and chimed in reading all the codes angerly. She interrupted me multiple times when I tried to educate her, got aggressive, and became rude. I called her an inconsiderate ** word and that I could die from this brain infection.

UHC DOESN'T CARE. No one checks appeals. AI auto denies them. I sent in a letter and within 24 hours an auto denied appeal. I spoke with Betty from UHC, An escalations person. This company is horrible.

    (1) They don't compute claims correctly. This policy has a $3,000 out of pocket maximum. So far I have paid $5320.67 out of pocket. In fact on my home page it says Out-of-Pocket Maximum $5,320.67 spent / $3,000 total.

    (2) Communicating with them is very difficult. They retired their Message center on December 8, 2023. You can only communicate via chat. Well I downloaded their csv claims file and created a spreadsheet and did some processing and confirmed that I had paid $5320.67. I opened a chat session and the person couldn't understand what I was trying to tell her. She even sent me an image of the webpage that showed, "Out-of-Pocket Maximum $5,320.67 spent / $3,000 total." No explanation I uploaded my spreadsheet to her but she said she couldn't open it. I kept pressing for an explanation.

She finally said she had to bring on another person. After many minutes the other person came on and he couldn't explain it either. He "put me on hold to check something". After a long time I got tired of this runaround and closed the chat session. Now, if the message center was still operating I could have sent my message and uploaded my spreadsheet for someone to review and come up with an explanation. Instead I had to sit there with that open chat session for what must have been over an hour.

    (3) Communicating with a live person is even worse. Some time after I closed the chat session a person from UHC called me. What a waste. She had a ** accent so thick neither my wife nor I could understand her. After many frustrating minutes of me saying, "I can't understand what you are saying I just asked, "Are you going to fix it"? I took her answer to be "Yes" but 24 hours later it is still not fixed.

Agree with others that zero starts needs to be an option. I pay a highly monthly premium to get very little covered in services, bringing into question if medical insurance is really an asset or just an extra major expense. I separated from my employer and tried to extend my coverage via the COBRA option; United Healthcare took 2.5 weeks to get me the enrollment paperwork and had the wrong effective date.

My employer confirmed the effective start date immediately and they now said they need 3-5 days to process the new effective date, another 3-5 days to generate a new bill, 3-5 days after that to process the payment, and then the activation team needs 5-7 days to actually reactive my insurance. Thus, with me responding asap to everything United has sent, it looks like it is going to have 5-6 weeks to enroll in COBRA. I know COBRA is retroactive, but the bills are full price including prescriptions that need to be paid full price out of pocket. Thus, I'm basically financing medical expenses they should be covering for 1.5 months. Continuous coverage m.a.!

By the way, United was able to miraculously turn off my insurance within minutes of being notified that I separated from my employer. The only conclusion one can make is that they are intentionally inefficient with COBRA as their customers will forget to submit a portion of expenses and their delay will effectively be providing United with free financing for 1-2 months on benefits they should be paying.

I mean it disappeared? The order was urgent and they don't care, the insulin co-payment doubled from one month to the next, if you don't have to pay that amount monthly your diabetes ends with you, I mean you need to have money to pay the monthly insurance plus the high co-payments of the medicines, we need to look for another insurance.

I cancelled my dental rider but was still charged for the following month. I have had to call for weeks to get my refund to be told I owe it cause I didn't call for refund, (but that's what I've been doing) then I was put on hold for an eternity to be told I didnt cancel in time, blah, blah. I call again to be told a refund was issued on June 7th it's now June 19th and it's still not showing on my c.c and now I'm being told that I'll have to wait til the 28th of June for it and the customer service rep said she would call on that date to make sure I got it????

This is a billion-dollar industry and they can't refund my money within as I know to still be (7-10 business days) per law but for some reason, they are holding it up and the excuses and reasons they are providing 1. Don't make any sense. 2. It sounds like what I've been hearing is being made up as they go along. 3. The stories don't jive, everyone I've talked to says a different thing regarding my refund with every single call I've made about it.

Now I'm being told it'll be funded on the 28th of this month, when I was told prev it was refunded June 7th? How can this be? The wait for my refund is going into a month now... I have done this process with the dental rider every year but this year I'm being gagged and yanked all over. How come the website lets you active coverage and set up auto-pay, but when you cancel it, it doesn't state anywhere to call customer service or that it will take 30+ days for a refund as well as their stupid website not responding to canceling recurring payments no matter how many times you click to cancel it still shows recurring on.

I have email confirmations of the cancelation and invoice for next payment showing $0 due for the month they so happily took anyway. I have done this same process every year with only 1 instance that an overcharge occurred, I called the dental dept and with a snap of a finger it was done, but this year is super ridiculous, and so disappointing with how customer service has taken a plunge!! There is no regulation or any rights for patients against thieves such as United Health Care.

I'm going to report this to the Medical Association Board of medicine. This delay and the sorry customer service given with stupid excuses is unacceptable and delaying my refund w/o proper legitimate reason and timeframe to return is against the law... This makes me sick that greed is so rampant that a billion-dollar company is doing this shady tactic to keep a disabled person's money (deliberately til they're ready to give it.)

Greed, money, greed, money, it's undeniable and so apparent how can one not see it?! It's not about quality care or any care really, its all a bunch of gaslighting spewed to patients, to make them think you care but in reality it's all about how much $$$$$ you can make off selling a sham that "we care about" quality-ha patient care). Finally, she had an MRI which so completely torn medial meniscus that was macerated throughout the entire area. The tear was a full thickness tear. We went to three different orthopedic surgeons for three different opinions and all three requested either a partial or a full knee replacement. I even talked to the radiologist regarding these findings and they concurred.

When this claim was presented to UnitedHealthcare, and we have a PPO, for approval it was DENIED… I was absolutely astonished when I read the rejection letter. They recommended taking **. I called to talk to the medical Director, thinking I might be communicating with an intelligent doctor. They refuse to call back and put you on an extremely long appeal list. After reading the reviews from other people who have experienced the similar thing, I am taking legal action. Absolutely everything that I have experienced with UnitedHealthcare has been total garbage. Absolutely the worst service I’ve ever experienced with no redeeming qualities. This is the worst insurance I’ve ever had in my life. This is not insurance. It’s FRAUD. Sending me to doctors who they do not cover, will not cover, and have not paid, even though those doctors are still currently listed as covered on their website, is fraudulent. Taking six months to give me an Insurance card listing said Medical provider, claiming that the doctor must be listed on the card in order for them to pay and then STILL not paying for services of any kind is fraudulent.

Sending a reminder to get a gynecological exam & offering a $50 gift card for completing such an invasive exam and then never providing the promised compensation is Fraudulent. Sending me to specialists they claimed they absolutely cover as long as I had a referral from my primary care physician and then Rejecting the referral repeatedly and then still denying coverage when the referral has been corrected, is fraudulent. Failing to pay for services during Covid was bad enough. But denying services & care when you are going through a serious medical crisis is CRIMINAL. Denying coverage for 4 years in a row, with absolutely no explanation and no notice, is fraudulent.

Rejecting prescriptions & referrals for the last 8 years claiming they require “prior authorization”, and then still rejecting them, even after receiving prior authorization, & then not allowing me to purchase my prescriptions out of pocket because THEIR “on-board physician” doesn’t believe I “need” the prescriptions that my doctors and specialists prescribed for me, is absolutely fraudulent. And now, denying ALL prescription medication prescribed by my primary care physician who THEY sent me to, and denying ALL care provided by my healthcare providers, is 100% fraudulent.

They do not return your phone calls. They totally abandon you if you ever get diagnosed with a serious illness. They find new ways to make your life completely miserable every year, especially if you’re already going through a medical emergency. They screw over your doctors and medical professionals & deny payment, even when they approved coverage in advance. During a medical emergency, you will be left with nothing as they walk away wealthier than they’ve ever been. YOU will be left to foot the bill.

I have never felt so abandoned and so helpless in my life. Thank you, United HealthCare, for abandoning me as soon as I was diagnosed with cancer. The amount of stress these people have put me through is just not worth it. The amount of anxiety & aggravation they’ve caused me during this difficult time is just cruel. So I chose a different one in the group, was assured she was in network and made my appointment.

Then, I wanted to double check in network status with UHC and request a new ID card with the new provider name. I elected to chat on the APP and the first man either did not understand English or had poor reading comprehension. We went round and round the simple issue of changing my PCP and requesting a new card. Finally, he elevated me to the “outreach team” and this person insisted not in network. Call UHC on the phone. I called and got the same runaround and eventually was told to tell the provider to call their provider line. The provider told me they don’t do that and would elevate the issue to their credentialing dept and get back to me next week. I realize the responsibility to update records lies on both ends, but UHC refused to help and this is not the first time I have had this problem with them. It should not be this DIFFICULT!

Upon request, he provided me the UHC phone number so I could inquire the reason and he explained the appeals process. Matthew said he could enroll me in a 1-year plan for which I applied and added a supplement accident plan at his advice. Matthew explained that if my appeal was approved, I could be switched back to the Tri-term plan and my premiums would adjust.

8 months later (as a FULL TIME reserve police officer), I determined (on my own) that I never had coverage except for the supplement plan. Let's not even talk about the dangers and close calls I had during this time. I contacted Matthew about the lack of coverage and the failure to notify me of the second denial. Matthew awkwardly refused to answer any questions other than to say I was denied a second time and it was only his job to sell the policy and it was UHC's responsibility to notify me of any denial. I was never notified by anyone via phone, email, text, etc. Interestingly, Matthew notified me of the first denial and tried to make commission selling another policy, but he wouldn't talk to me when the second policy was declined. What's more important? The client having coverage or the broker making money.

During my inquiry with UHC into the policy denial (phone and letter received), I learned that I was declined after being misdiagnosed with Major Depression Disorder by my PA during a physical. Sidebar: I couldn't sleep due to an isolated incident that I mentioned to my PA and he prescribed a 30-day supply of Lexapro (low dose anti-anxiety med) that I never finished taking, never got refilled and I cancelled my follow-up appt. because I was able to process and return to my normal sleep. I contacted the PA about the misdiagnosis and he immediately agreed to write a letter to UHC explaining the mistake and added clarification that this was an isolated incident of depression, wasn't taking the meds and I no longer needed any treatment.

Upon receiving the appeal results, I was notified that regardless of the misdiagnosis, I had a psychological disorder and I was still denied. I had mentioned in my appeal cover letter that I had been involved in hundreds of critical incidents as a police officer and never required or sought mental health treatment and was relied upon by the dept and public to maintain my mental health and I obtained a police physical every year that addressed mental health. Regardless, I was now officially diagnosed with a psychological disorder because I couldn't sleep well for about two weeks. Has anyone ever experienced at least one isolated incident in their life that worried them and caused them to lose sleep? Anyone?

Now to add insult to injury, it was also mentioned that I was medically untreated after being diagnosed and referred to a specialist by my PA during the same physical. Part of the appeals process is that you provide the last 5 years of medical records and there were no records from this specialist. Sidebar: When speaking to your provider about an elective procedure and they offer to write you a referral as a courtesy to help you make the appointment.....don't accept it unless you know you're going! Otherwise, just make your own appointment. UHC incorrectly presumed that my PA made a diagnosis when it was only a referral as this medical topic was not within his area of expertise to make a diagnosis.

Ultimately, my PA was trying to help me and had no idea that UHC would be so problematic, nor did I. UHC explained in the denial letter that all of their customers must answer "No" to ALL of the medical questions on the application to be covered. Had UHC initially said that I was diagnosed with a psychological disorder and I was untreated by a specialist, then my appeals process would've addressed these concerns. It became obvious, as you'll later read, that UHC was going to stick to their decision and not change it. I had an opportunity to make a second appeal which again required my past 5 years of medical records, but after seeing how the first appeal didn't give all the exact answers for the denial to work with, I chose not to play this game anymore.

After the unsuccessful appeals process and 8 months later when I called UHC to lean why they didn't informed me that my second application was declined, I was told that once you are declined you are always declined and you cannot purchase another policy. This means you cannot be sold another major policy, except for a supplement plan. When I asked why I wasn't informed of this, the answer was "You can't have a major policy if you've been declined previously so there's nothing to inform you".

Now for more confusion...I was never even notified that the supplement plan was approved and I never received an insurance card, letter, email, etc for this plan. So, when I called to make these inquiries, they found the supplement plan was active but said they didn't send me a card in the mail because it's a stand alone plan and doesn't have a policy number. If you apply for a major plan and supplement plan, you will NOT get notified if the major plan is denied and the supplement is approved because ...there is NOTHING to tell you. Am I crazy or (well, I have been diagnosed with a psychological disorder so disregard that question) or does there seem to be a breakdown in communications by UHC and job knowledge by the broker.

I'm about to wrap this up.... I filed a complaint with the receptionist at UHC Broker Services via phone. My complaint was 1. the broker's lack of job knowledge lead me to believe I had coverage, after completing a second application via phone, when I did not have coverage and 2. there was not communication about the second application being denied but yet approve a supplement and not even communicate to me about that. I didn't address the appeals process.

Conclusion: I received a letter that I expected would address the outcome of my complaint, but instead it explained why my appeal was declined!! Even funnier, they admitted, after listening to the phone conversations between Matthew and I (8 months earlier), that he offered to sell me another plan after I was denied. They obviously thought they were addressing a second appeal which I was entitled to, but never filed because at the end of the letter it stated: "This concludes the appeal process". OMG.

Conclusion: I was very nervous about trying to get insurance coverage with another company. I thought all of this would somehow follow me and cause me to be declined for coverage if I had to complete another questionnaire asking if I had ever been denied coverage elsewhere. I spoke to an insurance broker who sells for Aetna, BCBS and Cigna and she explained that when President Obama approved Affordable Care Act that most insurance companies can't ask pre-existing medical questions other than "Do you smoke?" and you still get coverage. It seems UHC only wants to cover healthy customers and has communications issues even when handling complaints. I was very happy to learn that other insurance companies had similar coverage that UHC offered for the cost. I hope my experience with UHC helps someone make good decisions and to know what to expect. Twitch, twitch.

Extremely disorganized company; all of their support is located in India, which leads to extreme inefficiency. My provider and I have been back and forth with this company for over a year, trying to submit a claim for my service. My provider mailed them the claim TWICE, to the correct address (which was verified multiple times), and they keep claiming to have never received it. Both I and my provider have been in constant back and forth contact with this insurance trying to sort out why the claim hasn't been processed. Constant communication difficulty, disorganization, and delays have finally led to the claim ultimately being submitted electronically (with extreme difficulty, according to my provider), and outside of the timely filing period. This led to the company wasting no time in sending me a $800+ bill for a service that was estimated to be less than $200 because the claim wasn't filed within the timely filing period.

Well, I wrote an appeal letter explaining that that was not my fault, as there is plenty of evidence that both me and my provider have been working hard to try to get the claim submitted within the timely filing period. It was the disorganization and inefficiency of the company that did not allow the claim to be timely submitted, despite our many attempts. We both have evidence of over hour long phone calls with the company, and many communication attempts, trying to get this claim submitted. Needless to say, this company is probably going to say they "didn't receive" my appeal letter, even though I paid extra to track it with USPS, and the tracking said it arrived. My patience with this company has run out. PLEASE, avoid this company at all costs.

It’s incredibly difficult to switch and most of their customer service representatives are incapable because they don’t understand what is required to make the switch. It’s taken me weeks to set up mail order and I still don’t have my medications. Optum has reached out to me three times to verify my mailing address even though I have not moved in five years. This delayed things each time.

Today (5/14/24) they told me that they mailed my meds on 5/1/24. I still don’t have them. I suspect that they were not mailed. I have called them so many times that I’ve lost track. They are so incompetent that I really don’t understand how they stay in business. They are clueless when it comes to customer service. I have been totally out of medication for two days now. I plan to non-renew all of my UHC health insurance coverage as soon as it expires. I am also going to file a complaint with the Indiana Department of Insurance. I generally don’t write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so because of their unparalleled level of incompetence and lack of caring about the customer.

My experience with United Health Care is difficult and a struggle. I have had a United Health Care Medicare Advantage Plan for around three years. I have needed prior authorizations several times and it took a long time to get a prior authorization but sometimes I would never get a prior authorization that healthcare providers requested. I could never get adequate help with finding healthcare providers and were often given names of healthcare providers that are no longer in business, out of the area, retired, do not take the insurance, are not taking new patients, and other issues. The copayments were not recorded correctly and do not match up to what I paid. There are around twenty or more claims that are associated with double billing on the part of the healthcare provider with copayments and billing that do not match up.

Most of these claims indicate a violation of the Federal False Claims Act. In 2023, (I only stayed with United Health Care to make sure some 2023 claims were processed) when I tried to find a better plan the United Health Care Agent/Broker said that all of my prescriptions (the agent/ broker lied just to make a sale) would be covered in 2024 but most of my prescriptions are not covered or had a high copayment amount. I had to seek help from an agency that helps consumers. When this consumer agency was on the phone with them, United Health Care, lied about everything like a child with their hand caught in the cookie jar. United Health Care does not care about their members, only profits. I reported the double billing to several government agencies. Be careful consumers United Healthcare has very dishonest business practices.

I have had three health insurance companies in the past (Regence, Kaiser and United). United has a much different approach to providing health insurance than Regence of Kaiser. My experience: United will deny every claim possible, even routine office visits and labs, requiring customers to go through the appeals process. I am still unsure how they communicate this directly to the customers, as I have invariably learned of these denials through my doctor’s office or the lab. Once discovered, finding these communications is difficult on the UHC If you choose to go with United, pay careful attention; this sneaky tactic could cost you hundreds of dollars.

For those claims that were not denied, UHC will require copious amounts of documentation that you may not normally received as the result of a doctor's visit. For out of network claims I have submitted, they even went to far as to “approve” the claim, but then deny any payment whatsoever, stating that they need more than the bill from the provider. They actually went so far as to request credit card statements, cancelled checks, or a bank statement showing the payment.

Customer Service has been ineffective at solving these issues. My experience is that they do not have any authority to assist, and oftentimes cannot access the information necessary to understand the entire issue due to segmentation of the company and access rights to information due to the segmentation. Further, many of the providers we work with will not accept United Healthcare. I have come to understand that providers also have extreme difficulty with United Healthcare, leading to cost increases associated with insurance billing and coordination.

I have tried to work this out with the company, and even went to my state regulatory agency (Insurance Commissioner) for assistance. State regulatory agencies are unable to assist due to the fact that United is federally regulated. Given the insurance lobby at the federal level, this did not seem to be a viable avenue for assistance.

Ultimately, I ended up changing jobs just to be free of the burden that is United Healthcare. The irony is that I am now in a position to influence which health plans our state uses, and United is no longer one of those choices, reducing their potential market share by over 400,000 people. I have done a fair bit of research on this, and I have found that 42 of 50 state government benefit administrators do not work with United HealthCare. This is a very telling number, and a fact that private sector employers should factor into their employee retention strategies. Paying a little more each month for quality healthcare is a lot less expensive than recruitment and training costs. Overall, I would recommend that everyone avoid this insurance provider. We have only so much time on this earth, and dealing with disingenuous, sociopathic and predatory corporations like United Healthcare is not the way I want to spend my time. Do you?

My husband thought because we had the same plan, when he canceled his, it also canceled mine. In the new year we were billed $150 which alerted us to the problem. And this is where my dissatisfaction comes into play. I talked with a service rep 3 times and the first two times I was told to send proof of my new insurance, first to a location in Pennsylvania, then to a location in Georgia. This was a month apart. I was told to send a copy of my Humana card, front and back. I did that. But then we got billed again in February.

This time I talked to someone at Humana who said to prove I had Humana I needed to include the copy of my acceptance letter. Quite disappointing that I wasn't told that on the first phone call with United. I have proved I have Humana 3 times and recently called to ask about a refund for two months' payments and was told I was still a United client until the end of February and once again asked to send proof that I have Humana! I asked for a supervisor to call me and gave my phone number, but when she called, she called my husband's number who didn't answer. I called and left a message on the supervisor's phone. They cover $42 for a $175 doctor visit, and pay 0 to 10% for my allergy test, endoscopy, treatments, and everything else. After racking up a bill of over $3500, They covered less than $800 of it. The ENT mapped out the cost of the recommended surgery after my deductible was met, and the surgery turned out to be $100 more than if I had no insurance at all, and paid privately out of my pocket. ($5,250 out of pocket.) Even after getting to that ridiculously high deductible, they still only pay 70%, and they also denied the claim to pay for the surgery.

After talking to the billing department, they let me know that my insurance was the worst they ever dealt with. If I had no insurance and just paid out-of-pocket, I would’ve been around $1000 for everything before the surgery versus the $3500 that was my expense to pay. When you also add the $500 per month payments for the plan, it costs over 4 times more than not having insurance at all!!! What we would’ve already paid out of pocket would have already covered the cost of surgery and I’d still have money left over!! **STAY AWAY FROM THIS INSURANCE SCAM!!!

I had an appointment with a specialist on January 3rd, which I had set up months before, so I called on January 2nd to ask if I should postpone my appointment until I had my primary doctor write a referral since my policy said this was required. The lady on the phone said to go ahead and she would waive the required referral. So I had my appointment and they denied it saying I didn't have a referral. I spent hours calling and each time they said they would fix it and pay. After 4 phone calls and about an hour each time, they ultimately said I would have to make an appeal, which would require me to fill out a lengthy form and a letter explaining everything. At this point, I paid the doctor bill because I just couldn't spend any more time with this. Terrible start to my new insurance. Will change insurance company at my first availability.

In particular, their "Choice Plus Network" scheme, which was foisted on us by the pushy salesman who came to our company and not to put too fine a point on it, lied to us about the plan, what it covered, and how it worked. At this juncture I can make no conclusion other than this is a complicated scam. Take heed: What is being peddled here is NOT insurance. It is a "fixed price indemnity plan" which covers practically nothing and insofar as I am able to determine serves no function other than to bilk you out of a monthly premium while providing zilch in return.

Up front you are given a big full color glossy pamphlet that purports to claim that this plan covers everything, but a wide swath of the extremely common services and procedures listed in the brochure turn out, once you read the contract, not to be covered or if they are only for minimal dollar amounts that won't come close to paying the full costs for your care. You are not allowed to view the contract until you have already signed up and forked over all of your personal data, and also paid your first month's premium.

This should be illegal. I can't comprehend how it isn't. No one can enter into a contract in good faith if they are not allowed to review and understand it first. Likewise, pitching this to employers and individuals with pushy and deceptive sales tactics deliberately couched in terms to make it appear to be legitimate health insurance when in fact it is not should be against the law.

But what they do is cover themselves by forcing the applicant to go through a lengthy and condescending pre-screening phone call, using long-winded carefully confusingly worded paragraphs that you must verbally agree to (and cannot receive in writing) which are designed to both absolve United Healthcare of any responsibility for anything, and serve as "gotchas" to later use to deny any claims you actually do manage to make.

But good luck making a claim anyway. The other shoe drops when you try to use the "MyUSHCG" website to find qualifying healthcare providers. You're given a big long list which is either a lie or, if we're being charitable, woefully outdated. Not a single doctor's office I called which was listed as "in-network" was actually in network, and the majority of them refused to accept this plan at all. Neither did anyone I contacted who was not on the list, not surprisingly. I called literally dozens before giving up. I can only assume that doctors know by now if they attempt to file a claim against this scheme they simply won't be paid.

The disclaimer at the bottom of the policy document says it all: "This plan is not considered ACA-qualified health insurance coverage." I lost my existing real health insurance coverage when my company was convinced to switch to this malarkey, and now I have to fight to get my old coverage back. Don't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

Who other than government offices don't allow the sharing of their employee names or contact information so you can actually get customer service? Their premium and deductible rates are astronomical and practically unaffordable and they deny many claims and or make you pay for services out of pocket that it seems should really be included and covered.

I'm perturbed that I don't have a choice of insurers and am instead stuck with these crooks. They set their own rates, they even sent me a letter saying they were going to raise my premiums because I had some health issues. For the record, I'm now 57 and have been paying for but not thankfully not really needing healthcare since I reached working age. How is it fair to now take advantage of me even more now that I'm "of age" and need some care?

I started working with a new company but after over a month UHC has not added my membership to the website/application. I spent circa 4-hours on the phone with perhaps 8 reps last week who assured me the matter would be fixed and I'd actually have access to my account details online. Yesterday, I followed up because I never heard anything from anyone and the problem still hasn't been fixed. The rep informed me that there was no note on my account and then the matter had been closed?!?! Are you kidding?! The incompetence is staggering. For years as an insurance producer I recommended United Health Insurance and AARP as a plan B Medicare Supplement Insurance Choice. I did this for many reasons as I thought they would have stable rates, quick claims payments and I always thought and was told they had cross over claims payments with Medicare. Crossover means that once medicare pays their claims they are submitted directly to United Health for reimbursement. After years of believing this I now find out they they are one of only a few carriers that only crossover with Part B claims and DO NOT cross over with part A claims. This leaves potentially a big headache for elderly people to have to deal with a cumbersome claims filing process on all hospital claims.

I recently went to Mayo Clinic and found this out the hard way. United Health did not cross over my claims creating a big potential hassle in claims filing for me. Moreover my rates have skyrocketed with my coverage over the last several years and will continue to do so in the future in all likelihood. Moreover, although I am not on a Medicare Advantage Plan and don't endorse them United Health as I understand it just pulled out of the State of North Carolina leaving many medicare advantage plan recipients without their doctors and providers. This from a company that I previously thought to be a premier company and an AARP provider. This in my opinion is shameful.

Waste of time and money. Even though they say in network, so many labworks will be done that charges more than $100 and they will say these are from third parties, they don't know about it. Even though you know you hit the deductible they will take more than two months to process the claim and if you have any doctor in between, you will end up paying out of your pocket saying that you didn't meet the deductible even though you did, it's because UHC takes a long to process them.

Last but not the least never pay through their portal through HSA, even though you are thinking they got paid because the money is already deducted from your HSA balance, the providers never get the money, and you will be getting letters from the service providers that you have outstanding balance in your account and they are past due even though you paid it before the due time, and then you will have to followup with payment proofs over the email and calls with the providers and talk to the billing departments of them along with the UHC representative (even they don't know about HSA payments) and that's frustrating.

The most irritating part is whenever you call UHC customer care or billing department, each and every person will tell you a new different thing, someone will tell the claim/bill will get processed in 48hrs, again if you call a later time, another representative will tell there's no way it can process before 45 days, if you expedite another person will tell it will be done by next monday, that was 24hrs, another person tells they didn't even get the claim submitted, it's incomplete, you will keep up following with several representative and nobody helps with an exact time and they never get processed and you will get frustrated, the service so poor with processing the claims or bills, in network/out network things, deductible and customer services that I wish if I could give them zero or minus, or sue the persons that I had talked to.

We just have to hope nothing happens this year, and change to a different one in open enrollment.

I've had United Healthcare Preferred care for about 10 Years now and have had the best Drs and customer service than from any other coverage I've had from anyone else. Seems like only complainers giving feedback here.

When I changed to a different carrier, they continued to auto deduct my payments. When I contacted them, they stated I needed to call and cancel even though Medicare said it would be automatic like it has been with the other five plans I have used. $ 320 for absolutely nothing...

UHC does not pay 90% of my claims. I get all the proper referrals, jump through hoops, go only in network, call for preauth and then they refuse anyway. I have about 10K in medical bills because they just do not pay claims. I have appealed about 15 claims and spent over 40 hours fighting this company. It is better to self pay and as I don't even feel like I can get medical care.

I tried UHC at 65 for two years. They charged me $345 for a tier two drug, plus refill January 2nd. Two days later they sent a letter saying I was no longer eligible. They would not refund my annual fee. They sent bills charging more than my share till I complained. They are a phone tree and lie about sending EOB's. Aetna has been way, way better now.

United Health Care is the WORST insurance I have ever had! My employer pays over $2000/mo for my "coverage". Aug of 2023, I had purchased DME, which UHC paid for, out of network, and I paid $2568 for my share which more than covered my annual deductible. Had a regular Dr visit right after this, I paid my part, UHC paid theirs. Come Jan '24, UHC changed their mind about covering my DME and thereby rendering my deductible not met... And thereby pulled their payment back from my Dr for the other appointment, making me 100% responsible for BOTH. Now I owe over $4500!!

I've spent hours on the phone with reps, who are extremely difficult to understand espcially for a hearing impaired individual... Only to have my calls disconnected and have to start all over again, and again, and again. My last call, they told me to have my provider try different billing codes. I said which codes? They said they were not a medical professional and could not tell me that. What kind of a sick game are these people playing? I recorded every call by the way. So if any legal reps want to take up a case, please contact me. I never should have renewed with these people after the year I had last (FY) year too! They have put me in a terrible financial situation. I DO NOT RECOMMEND UHC AT ALL!! If you have ANY other options, go with that... Especially if you live in Alaska! I could have negotiated a better deal as a cash customer.

UHC has slashed benefits in 2024. Specifically on hearing: last year's benefits were over $4500 for two hearing aids, this year, $2500. UHC Ucard went from $240 per year to $160. ER cost went up and I'm certain this is not all. Plus, I live in an area that does not have access to doctors and hospitals (90 miles away). They've all left UHC. There are a couple of dentists left and Optometrists. But I don't have access to the perks such as exercise classes that others can avail themselves of but still pay the same premiums. I am not reimbursed for mileage to visit doctor (180 round trip). And now there is the loss in benefits. I should have read the changes when the open enrollment was in effect.

I joined United Healthcare specifically for the UCard benefit to help buy food. Stuff that is supposed to be covered is not. I have had to pay out of pocket for things that were listed in the catalog as covered. Sure, you can put the card toward rent and utilities, but restrictions are likely there too. I have had nothing but trouble since I joined in November of 2023. I thought this was the right thing to do, but it clearly was not. I will be cancelling my policy with them effective immediately. 0/10 do not recommend.

My husband and I both got on Medicare UHC advantage plan in the last few months. BIG mistake. I've been more stressed in the last few months than in the last ten years. Everything online about the UCard says it can be used for certain foods at grocery store. WRONG!! I was depending on it to purchase my buggy of groceries today. It was flat denied. When I called customer service I got two people that didn't know their head from the other end. I was told my plan didn't cover food. They said info online incorrect. Is there a way to sue UHC for false advertising?
