I went to purchase insurance and was given a quote of $33.00 a month. When I received my bill I found out that they were charging me $49.00 a month. I went to the office and was trying to find the agent that helped me, but she was not in. I asked the other young ladies if I could get some help, and I was told that I had to come back when she was in. I returned a second time and tried to receive help and I got the run around.

Finally the manager decided to come out, that's when I learned that he was there the first time I went and just didn't help me. So me and the male manager were talking and I told him that I was being charged too much, and I received a different quote, he told me that there was nothing he could do to help me and I told him that I wanted to remove some of my insurance to make my policy lower and I was told that I could not do that either. Well I told him that I was not leaving until we got things resolved, and the manager became very loud and told me to leave his office or he would call the police, which he did not. Overall I did not get anything resolved and I need help!

On January 25, 2016 our car was stolen from a gas station in Knoxville, TN. My husband had left it running with the keys in it (clearly our fault). So when I went to call the insurance I just knew they would say it wasn't covered because of that issue, however, I was pleasantly surprised. They agreed to help pay off the total amount of the car if it was never recovered or pay for the damage if it was recovered. Luckily we were lucky enough to get our car back thanks to the help of KPD and social media on January 27, 2016. I received a call from our claim adjuster Kevin ** on January 28, 2016 telling us that they would pay us back for the tow truck we had to use to get our car home since they took our only key and locked the doors. They also are paying to re-key our car so they cannot use our key to take it again.

The thieves spray painted the entire front side and back bumper and window of our car. It's a 2005 White Chevy Equinox. They took everything from inside the car as well as our license plate, which insurance also said they would pay for. Not even two hours after talking to our adjuster Kevin, we received a phone call from a guy named Ken who was coming to assess the damage and give us a quote. I never expected for it all to move along this quickly. I was told not to get this insurance because you get what you pay for but as of right now they're going above and beyond what I expected!

I have been trying to help my elderly friend to obtain a SR22 form to be faxed to the State BMV. She has talked to over 5 different people in 5 days and each time they say "We will take care of it for you" and each time she calls back to verify they say "We don't have you down for a SR22"! Then that person says "I'll fix it now..." She calls back the next day and well... It's like Ground Hog Day... The same conversation AGAIN! Horrible customer service and follow through! One person said they don't have a way to reach the Florida DMV??? You're an insurance company for crying out loud!

I purchased The General Auto Insurance back in September because it was cheaper. So I thought it was good for the first couple of months, then they sent my lienholder a cancellation notice saying I didn't have insurance now, granted I paid my bill every month with a prepaid debit card and it deducted it from the card. Now my lienholder came and got my truck and they already deducted my payment. And when I call them they said they had no record. I would not recommend The General to anyone - a complete scam and BEWARE!

After nearly 2 years of paying premiums, I was in auto accident. No fault, ice on roadway. There was about $8100 of damage to my 2011 KIA. Car is well worth repairing. The General continually tries to only pay $4500. The Adjuster turned in quote for 8100, but they keep saying only paying 4500. The accident was 12/26/2015. Today is 1/13/16 they only pay 20 a day for car rental, so I am paying 7 $7.+ a day because the rental place doesn't have a car that cheap. Think twice and go somewhere else before you sign on the line with The General.

I have been with The General for almost two years. In September my husband was involved in an accident, single car, his fault. That's when I found out, you get what you pay for! The whole process was excruciating. I could never get a hold of my adjuster. As a matter of fact, the only time I actually spoke to her is when she called to tell me that my check was being mailed. My loan company called day after day, wanting their money. I gave The General my loan info at least 3 times, plus sent them a copy of my loan receipt to make sure they had info that they needed. That was their excuse for it taking so long. They said they didn't have loan info but yet they never called me to get it. I left message after message, never a returned call. It took 3 months to get my car paid off. Not to mention they would not remove the vehicle until the claim was closed. So I paid for a car to be insured for 3 months, that I didn't even have. I am still fighting for that money.

Once the vehicle was removed, my payment did not change. They expected me to pay $269 for two vehicles with only liability, that was the final straw. I went to a different company for $78. The lack of communication was absolutely ridiculous. I left two messages a day for 6 days and had to call the 800 number to actually speak to someone. 3 months is entirely too long especially when you are without a vehicle and cannot finance another until your claim has been paid. This was the worst experience with an insurance company.

Was a little short on funds and needed insurance that was affordable. Decided on The General. Got to pick due date and decided on the 20th of each month. This was a couple of months ago. Easy online bill pay so never late but every month since opening account they send an email on the 1st saying my account is under intent to cancel. Why would they send that? I thought. My bill due date I picked was the 20th? So I called and they said that it's just something they're required by law to do. Don't worry about it. I'm still wondering if they are doing this. Why give you option for when bill due?

I will be simple and to the point. I paid for rental car coverage. My car broke down and my little brother died during the same weekend. The General refused to cover my rental car stating that going to a funeral was considered needing the rental car for pleasure and they would not cover it. Maybe you can understand that I was feeling a little sensitive during this time period but I still think this is false advertising. Don't say I'm paying for something if you're not going to provide it. I pay insurance so that I am covered when unexpected things happen, and the 2 employees I spoke with acted as if I was trying to get a car to go to spring break. Very unprofessional, and very bad character.

I first signed up with The General in 2012 and had no issues with making payments, having questions about changes to my policy answered or anything. I haven't had any accidents until December of 2015 and it wasn't my fault. I've left messages to be called back and let me know what's going on but I've been ignored. I just checked the status of my case and saw that it's been closed... thanks for the call back to let me know why that is. Horrible way to keep business.

I understand why most sign on due to the cheaper price but believe me when I tell you, it isn't worth it. Needing help and getting it is priceless! I will NOT be staying with The General. I'd rather go ahead and pay a little more to actually receive service I'm paying for. Seriously? You can't call a customer back to let them know what's going on? Please don't fall into the same trap so many of us have. Try someone else, I can promise you won't regret it unless they're worse than these people!

I started my policy with The General on 10/09/2015 for $165 to start and $156 a month. In November, I go online to make my payment and my policy increased by $75 and I was requested to pay a total close to $400. Of course I called and was told that the discounts in my original quote was removed based on my history report that explained I haven't had insurance in the last 5 years, which is impossible since they had no report to show my license had been suspended. Come to find out they use a company called Verisk that businesses use on a voluntary basis. I requested the report and it did not explain anything but under where it said claims reported was NONE. After disputing my policy still increased by $10 and this was acceptable.

So in December I go online to make my payment on the 17th, (date was adjusted after correction) and after receiving a confirmation # I got an error message saying my account couldn't accept online payments and to call and speak with a representative. Well, this is the only insurance company I've dealt with that cannot assist you after hours. So to keep my policy active, I did my due diligence and made the payment through the automated line. Payment was accepted. I check my account and noticed I was charged twice. I call, was told the refund can take 3-5 business days, 2-3 if expedited. I requested expedite because the overpayment was for another bill. I called three times and was told the refund had been processed. I call today and was told since the new bill went out on the 20th the credit was applied to January's balance.

I was lied to from the beginning and they intentionally sat on my request and stole money that was slated for my rent. Now I'm $163 closer to being evicted because my landlord doesn't care that the insurance company stole my money. Yes, I made the payment twice only because the online system rejected my payment. Sorry doesn't always fix things. My advice is don't settle for minimum coverage because the minimum is all you will get. I honestly want to sue them but that will cost me more $$$.

This is worst insurance company I've ever known. First off, my boyfriend was in a hit and run which wasn't his fault. This was the beginning of Nov 2015. It took tons of calls to the office to get things started. The adjuster was horrible, scattered brain and just non-professional. Obviously, their computers don't link to others because when you spoke one someone else they were clueless to what's going on. They finally gave him a rental after missing two weeks of works. Stated that they had to try to find out if the other people had insurance, which shouldn't matter because my boyfriend had full coverage. Anyhow, he had the car since around mid part of Nov. Now they calling telling him he needs to return the car but yet still have no answers on when he can expect a check.

He spoke with supervisors who was not helpful either. The General may have called my boyfriend bout 3x the whole time. Every time he has to call them, only to get their voicemail. Here it is about to be a new year, no car, no money and no one within that organization that actually can help. This is the worst insurance place ever!!! I could go on with their horrible business but at this point, we are about to get a lawyer because we have no choice. This place has called us to miss out on paychecks and everything else. ALTHOUGH PRICES ARE CHEAP, IT'S FOR A REASON. PLEASE GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE. The General will only make your situation worst. They are not for you, they are for themselves. Run!!! Seriously.

I have had General insurance for three years now. I pay my bill with a credit card and I called The General to have a car took off my policy due to me selling the car. So the operator taking the call said he had finished my request and "Thank you. Have a nice day." So I got my new ID cards in the mail and the Mercedes was still on my policy a year later. So The General charged me for a year on a car I no longer have. And they want me to go to DMV and track down info on the car I no longer own and mail it to them. All phone conversations are monitored and they never told me I had to sign papers to get the car off my policy when I was speaking to a General representative either. Why do I have to show proof when they have the recorded conversation proof? The headquarters said in my situation, "We need the proof from DMV."

The General has nothing to do with my property, me selling it. They only need to do what I ask cause I pay them my money. Don't ever get The General for insurance. They can't even fix their mistake to a loyal customer. The worst company for insurance. Unprofessional, multi-million dollar company who doesn't care about the people who make them the company which they are. All the advertising looks great on TV but when you need a good insurance company The General is not the one to get. I'm in Sacramento, CA and am switching immediately.

So I needed to get auto insurance for my truck and was a bit short in the wallet so I figured I would try out The General Auto Insurance. I am in another state helping out my aging father, yet still garage my truck in my home state. I cannot afford two rental agreements so I have the truck at a friend's house. I set up my auto insurance without too many issues, however the next day (and they had already charged my account) found out that they would not cover the truck due to the fact I was in another state than my truck. So they told me to cancel the policy and they would refund my funds back to my account.

I did and when it came time for the refund to have hit my account there was no funds. They kept all the funds. One day of coverage cost me 142.58. Well that is wonderful they will not cover the truck, and they kept the funds. Will not ever support The General in anyway from this day forth. If I was at fault to cancel my coverage I would understand holding the 140.00 plus, but being a single mom of two kids, working part time to help out my dad, and my situation what it is they would not cover it felt like I was kicked in the gut and slapped across the face with a headless trout. Thank you so very much The General. I will forever be grateful for you.

The insurance company was great, the customer service always helped me when I needed it. Though I'm on satisfied because it was a little pricey. I love my car and everything about it and when I wrecked they did raise it up to where I couldn't afford it and it sucked because I love my car and I just loved it but someone just had to crash into me because they weren't paying attention and my insurance couldn't understand that not everyone is perfect.

And I'm only 20 and so they were like "you are young lets jack up all your insurance for you because you got your ID when you were 18 and not 16 like everyone else" but my parents were like "nah you're okay you can get it at 18 and it will be fine." They never thought about my insurance being more and then I got a coupe because it looked cool as ** and they were like "oh you're in a sports car" and I'm like "no I'm not, what do you mean," only because it's 2 doors and not 4 so yeah that sucks as well. The police officer gave me their information to file the claim. I called and gave their claims dept. and gave them all the info that the police officer provided me. I was told I would get a callback from the adjuster within 24 hours. I had to call everyday to get any response (3 weeks). At this point, they are denying the claiming because they don't have enough proof that I was rear-ended, despite me sending photos and a repair estimate from their "preferred shop" that there was rear-end damage to my vehicle and front end damage to their vehicle. The commercials were annoying, I should have been smarter. I have never had to make a claim yet, so I cannot comment on that. I have never had to call them either. "DO NOT GO TO THE GENERAL"!!! I first did an online quote as I just moved from the San Francisco Bay Area (which is high car crime capital of America). I own a 2013 Chevy Cruze LT (Turbo). I just moved to Spokane Washington, in a pretty affluent area, no crime, etc. The quote I paid in the SF Bay Area was about $150.00, no frills or perks. When I contacted the General to get a quote for my Washington insurance, was $146.00, I said, "you know what, ok I will give it a try." This was supposedly a discount with proof of previous insurance. So I sent him my previous insurance cards.

I then got a new bill stating it would be $189.00. I called them and they NEVER told me that my insurance cards weren't good enough and they needed a "letter of experience" from my insurance company showing I had at least six months of coverage. I also asked them to include 10K for personal coverage for myself. They promised me once they get this, they would go back and discount my insurance. Well, I get my broker to contact my insurer, and he sends the letter over to the General. I look online today, to see the so called insurance discount and giving me the basic coverage 10K coverage... GET READY... My rate was $171.00... LMAO!

I immediately went to Esurance, which is a GREAT place to go. They quoted me $108 and included the personal insurance included of 10K and for 9 dollars more. I got car rental up to $60 a day for 45 days and tow for all $117 per month! A savings of over $60. Esurance is the way to go... STAY AWAY FROM "THE GENERAL AT ALL COST!"

I had the insurance immediately with one phone call. I was able to get insurance while I waited in the vehicle registration office. Two days later the gardener's lawn mower threw up a pebble and it shattered one of our windows. Our claim was immediately approved and our window was replaced within 2 days. It was a Godsend! I can easily pay our bills online on their secure website. The only downside so far is that I continue to get email notices saying my policy will be canceled if payment isn't received at such and such date. It will give me this message 2 weeks in advance. I always pay on time so this is annoying. It would be better if they just sent out notices that said "payment will be due". Saying "canceled" is extreme even if true. Just saying. Overall though I have been having a good experience.

I've been reading everybody else's comments and that's exactly what's happening to me. I was rearended by a car on 7/31/15 by a person insured by the General Insurance. I called and it took about 1 week to get a claim number. I was then told an adjuster would come to evaluate my car in a week and they never came or called. 2 weeks passed by and I called nonstop until finally they came to evaluate my car on 8/31/15. I was told I would receive a phone call and NOBODY called me. So again, I called and called and called and they said they were writing up a report.

Days turned into weeks, and I finally spoke to an adjuster. The adjuster offered me an unreasonable amount and I sent them the tow fee, ride fees, hospital fees, so they could pay that also. Nothing. I demanded to speak to a supervisor and let me tell you she was EXTREMELY rude. I told her I had been without a vehicle for a month and I needed a rental. She said "NO, NO. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL I PAY FOR YOUR CAR. YOU WANT ONE? PAY FOR IT YOURSELF."

I was shocked by her unprofessionalism and told her so. She then demanded I send her all documentation so we could get the case over with. I, in dire need of my money so I could buy a car, complied. She was so authoritative and furious as if her car had been totaled. So I sent her everything. And guess what? It's been three weeks since I sent her everything and she has not sent me my check. She has also picked up my car. I've been calling everyday and I'm just sent to voicemail. I'm so stressed.

First off, I got rear-ended while at a stop light. The person who hit me was a insured person of General Auto Insurance. My truck don't look all that bad considering, but underneath it has a cracked and a bent frame now, got a vibration to it, and something bent popped my tire from rubbing on it, and to top it off, my seat belt does not function right now (worked fine previously). When I reported this, was told I would be placed on hold while they got me a claim number, then hung up on me, made a second attempt, same thing happened again, but not till the person on the other end IN THE CLAIMS DEPT told me "not sure why they transferred you to me, I'm claims", "click", hung up, wow, I thought.

So I called my insurance company, who did a courtesy call to the General Insurance company. A hour later they called back and said they got to the point to get a claim number, then just never got back on the phone, lol. So I tried again today, and finally got to the point to get the claim number, adjuster's name, even got her on the phone. After taking a report, she let me know that there was no record of me or anyone else making a claim or a call, lol, flat out LIES!! After all said and done she said a adjuster would be with me shortly, so I said I needed a rental car, then her tone changed, not sure if it was on their insurance for me to get one, told her it doesn't matter. I had a safe driving vehicle until he hit me, and then said, "We have to investigate this first". REALLY!! What's there to investigate, your driver rear-ended me!

NO damage was done. We filed police report. We both drove our vehicles away. Now 17 months later, my license and car registration were suspended because GACC denied claim (I was okay with that) even though I paid them for 4 years and was never in an accident. They claimed I was uninsured. When I called there for information about my policy they said I was not insured by them until 2014. Then I got a letter from secretary of state requesting I send 1,700.00 for a bond to them to reinstate my license and registration.

My son call to report the damage and was told someone would call him back the next day. (Of course that did not happen) I told him to call them and find out what was going on. He talked to a lady at ext. ** at the General and while talking to her the subject of vandalism came up. He said it could have been vandalism. He was then told he was not insured for vandalism so they would not pay the damages on our Jeep. Now, so you know, no one saw or heard anything!!! Only GOD known how his truck hit our Jeep.

After spending almost 2 hours on the phone being put on hold, disconnected, so I would have to start all over again and telling the few people I got to talk to it was not Vandalisms. (The lady at ext. ** would not answer her phone nor anyone else in that department.) I was told by some lady that finally answered the phone that someone would call us the next day. They did call the next morning and told my wife that my son said it could have been vandalism so they would not pay for the damages to our Jeep. They said we could go after the owner of the truck, sue our son who has stage 4 colon cancer. I THINK NOT! Thank God it was our car that stopped his truck not a stranger's car. My husband hit a deer on his way to work on July 2. We filed the claim immediately that day. We did not have rental insurance because my previous experiences with reputable auto insurance companies have been handled in a timely manner. We knew we would have a little delay due to it being a holiday weekend, but it is now July 28th and we still do not have a settlement. This is not the worst part. Two weeks after the claim was made I was at work when the lady at the body shop where we had the vehicle towed called me to tell me that the insurance company had contracted someone to move our vehicle to another lot 70 miles away. Mind you, our tags are still on the vehicle, we are still paying payments on the vehicle and all of our stuff is still inside. She says the adjuster says it is a total loss and they are moving it to a lot to be stored. This is ILLEGAL!

The vehicle belonged to us as we did not sign an agreement on a settled total-loss price. The agent apparently forgot to tell us that the vehicle had been adjusted and was a total loss (even though we had called that week and his exact quote was: "I don't even know when we'll get around to seeing the vehicle."). We settled that and was told it was a total loss. This was on July 13th. Now it is July 28th and we are yet to be given a number or have them take care of paying off the loan. This is after us paying for 2 weeks of rental cars and finally purchasing a new car when we found out our Jeep was a total loss.

We would like to come to an agreement and have this vehicle removed from our insurance and have it paid off, but when we call to speak with anyone at The General we get the run around and sent to someone's voicemail. We are going to have our attorney handle this if we don't have resolution by the end of the month. Bottom line: Don't get auto insurance through The General. Pay the $10 more a month and go with Allstate or Progressive. Both of those companies had a check in my hand within 5 business days of a claim in the past.

If I could leave negative stars, I absolutely would. The General Insurance is the WORST I've had in my 35 years of driving. All I can say is this company tries their hardest to cheat its customers out of money, has no sense of accountability & could care less about customer service or fulfilling their obligations. Beware!!! I, like an idiot, was with them for 17 years and maybe made 4 claims the entire time -- none of which were determined to be my fault but resulted from other drivers or things hitting my car.

I recently made a claim for damages caused by a deer that lunged in front of my van and caused substantial damage to the front end of my vehicle. I have always paid for full coverage and this incident was covered under my comprehensive coverage. Unfortunately, my $500 deductible became a $1340 deductible due to additional charges I was forced to incur because of numerous delays caused by The General, their incompetent, rude staff & the disreputable third party appraisal companies they use. And I was without my car for about 1.5 months because of their inability to provide the services that I paid them in full for over a decade and a half!

After immediately reporting the incident, filing a police report and doing everything required of me, I was told by my incompetent adjustor, **, that The General would send an appraiser in 48 hours to my mechanic's to do an estimate and start the claims process. 48 hours go by and no appraiser and no phone call from adjustor. 72 hours goes by and I have to call the adjustor who said that the appraiser hasn't uploaded their estimate yet and to just be patient. 5 days go by and I have to call adjustor again who seems annoyed with my persistence.

I explain to her that I have a rental car and would like to have my claim processed promptly to avoid more & more rental car expenses. 2 weeks go by and no appraiser. Call adjustor again to request that The General pay for my rental car expense only to be told that my policy does not cover that. I explained that the expense is due to The General's failure to send out an appraiser to assess the damage. She refused to offer any concessions or take any responsibility for the delay and even asked me if I wanted to add the rental car coverage in the future. I wouldn't need that coverage if The General fulfilled their obligation to get an appraiser out within 48 hours!

After a lot of back & forth with the adjustor, she puts me on hold to call the appraisal company and comes back to tell me that my request was not in their system which is why no one had come out. She expected me to be understanding and explained that it wasn't The General's fault as it is a third party appraisal company that screwed up. She couldn't grasp that this third party company hired by them is still their responsibility and doesn't release them from the responsibility to get an appraiser out to provide an estimate of damages within the timeframe they quoted me over & over again.

Finally an appraiser shows up to provide a completely inaccurate estimate for only visible body damage & a few mechanical repairs. My mechanic tore down my car to properly assess the actual damages incurred within the engine which were significantly more than The General's appraiser's estimate indicated. A "supplement" estimate now had to be sent to The General from my mechanic and the waiting game for an appraiser started all over again. Before any work on my car could begin, the appraiser had to come out again to review the mechanic's estimate -- and another 2 weeks went by before an appraiser would appear!

So basically, an entire month went by before The General would approve any repairs and this cost me approximately $700 in rental car charges. My $500 deductible became a $1200 deductible when it was all said & done. And then when I decided to cancel my policy with them, I was told that I would be charged a 10% cancellation fee and would lose a "Policy Fee" of $60 which, apparently, they tell people over the phone is "earned" and non-refundable (neither of these terms are disclosed anywhere on their website or in my policy fyi). This is a fine example of you get what you pay for. They may be cheap but in the long run, they'll cost you way more in time, money & peace of mind.

I had an incident with a client of the General Insurance company. My truck was parked in my driveway when the other night, this person rammed into the back of my truck and crashed the back side of it, leaving me without a back light nor can I open the back door of my truck. The next morning I realize my other vehicle was also damaged, so now 2 of my vehicles are damaged - the truck is the worst which I only had liability coverage, since I only use it to drive to and from work (about 25 miles a day). So this happened on the 16th, about 11:30 PM - I filed a police report, the officer came out, made the report and gave me the owner of the other vehicle's insurance information being the General Assurance.

I call on the 17th AM and filed the complaint to proceed with the process to fix my vehicle. The guy I spoke to then takes my statement on the incident and gives me a claim #, and says that the adjuster would get a hold of me in 1-2 days to begin the process. I waited 2 days and no call from the adjuster. So on the 19th (about 9 AM) I call the adjuster, left a voice mail with a detailed message to return my call; his voice mail clearly says that he'd return my call within 24 hours. Now the 20th, mind that it is now day 4th day, still no call from anyone, I called their general claim line and spoke to a very rude male from the General Assurance claims department.

I explain my situation and he begins doubting me, asking what happened - "your vehicle was in your driveway!?" I said, "Yes, it was hit while parked in my driveway by your client! And I need to know what I need to do to proceed with my claim because I cannot have my work truck with out a back light and a locked door that doesn't open!" He says, "Oh you don't have full coverage on your "work truck"". Who is he to know why or why not do I have any coverage? HIS CLIENT HIT MY TRUCK IN MY DRIVEWAY AT HOME! So he starts asking me again all the questions of what happened, what time, what's your address, when I interrupted him and said, "I already gave my statement to the person that filed my claim with you 4 days ago - do I have to go through this again?"

He says, "Oh what, does it bother you? Are you not willing to answer the questions?" I said, "Yes because I don't have time for this. What I want to know is what do I need to do to proceed with this claim? Do I need to contact an attorney to take care of this matter? " He replies "That's your decision ma'am, you do what you want" - what kind of response is that? He was soooo unprofessional, unworthy of helping solve this matter. He was rude, and questioning me as if this incident was my fault! What kind of training does The General Assurance give its employees?

I am so upset with the way this has became a nightmare and just to say, I do have full coverage on my everyday vehicle other than my truck (though I believe that coverage question was way out of place to ask). I really hope that this insurance company treats its clients with a little more respect than it did to me, and I am glad I am not insured with them. I will be contacting an attorney to handle my case. I do not want to deal with unprofessional customer service.

My first experience with this company is not going so well. First of all, I'm disabled from a workplace injury since 2009, and haven't been able to drive since then. My husband and I just moved to CA from AZ which we were on our way home to PA from AZ but I couldn't take the drive because it made my chronic pain worse by the long periods of sitting in the same positions with many stops. Long story short, we ended up turning around in Nevada then decided to get a condo in SAC, CA. After two weeks in our new condo, I see that our insurance is about to expire in AZ which means our licenses would be suspended and registration too. So I look through the online yellow pages for insurance here and I pick A.I.S. to help me. So I told the guy working with me the same exact story I'm telling here in this forum. Of course the guy writes all this in his notes and gives me quotes online. One reasonable quote catches my eye and I go with, you guessed it, THE GENERAL.

They had the best rates. But a little problem comes up that my license in AZ appears to be suspended. So the agent tells me he can put us on some kind of specialized insurance for $87.00 and some change with monthly - the same price if they can debit our bank account for it. So he asks for my husband's info too and sends the policy in a zipped email where I can sign it and everything right online. I asked if he needed us to bring this info with us to his office right up the street less than a mile and he can take pics of our jeep. The guy says, "No, we don't need all that." I said, "So what happens when I prove my license is okay?" He says, "We'll change it easily to a different policy, not specialized, and then your rates will go down more." I'm very pleased at this point.

The next morning. I proved with a copy of a receipt that my DL is in fact not suspended and that is when I noticed that he forgot to add my husband's info and he also put that I was single which I said proudly that I have been married 29 years and not single. He then said they'll correct that down at the General and I said okay and trusted that he did. I never noticed on the cards that it only had my name because my husband opened and threw the info in the glove department. There were three other times that I inquired about the single status and assumed that they added my husband just to be sure to agents when paying my bill on the phone and was told that it was corrected. This all went down in 6/11/2013. Fast forward to November 6, 2014, my husband ended up in a three car pileup which he was the middle car in the pileup. He then pulls out insurance info and comes to find out that he's not on the cards. He then calls the insurance company that he pays the bills for to find out that he is not insured but I am. WOW.

So of course, he calls me and I call the company livid and ready for a bogus response. Exactly right, they never added him to the policy! I demand to know how a man who pays his bill every month for a year on the phone with them and not one person was not questioned as to why he's paying the bill and not me. So they proceed to tell me he's not insured and the disabled person who hasn't driven since 2009 is covered and we basically have been paying for a policy to protect just the car then. So lastly, I'm supposed to talk to everyone's supervisor that I talked to throughout the year that promised me that he was added starting from AIS to The General. One person so far has had enough since to add him to the policy for the days to come, but no one has owned up to the mistake that they made by not adding him. So it gets better the car that hit him and pushed him into the car in front of him has Mercury insurance and has just sent a letter not accepting responsibility for the front of our vehicle but the back and has sent my husband for an estimate at their place of choice then offered a check for $1,000 and that is it. The damage is way worse and their 22-year-old driver is at fault for the whole accident. Long story but the ending is I'm looking for an attorney to sue The General and Mercury for bad faith.

The frustration I feel is unreal. I will try to keep this short. I wrote a check to receive coverage and an SR22 to keep a valid license and remain insured. I thought I was getting a deal; the down payment was the lowest I've seen. As I type, I honestly feel betrayed. The check I wrote bounced, even though I got direct deposit the day it was due to clear, so to ensure that I had a valid license, I went ahead and purchased another policy with cash. The check went through another day and cleared, so I called immediately to inform them that I had already purchased another policy and needed to cancel. All of the reps I have spoken with during this two week period were very polite. This first one told me I should receive most of my money since I was covered only two days. I called the following week after receiving no refund and a notice for the next month's bill and was told that the policy should have been cancelled as they had received the needed documentation, but to call on Friday to follow up, as she was submitting the information again.

Today is Friday, I have called to follow up and was told that while my policy has been indeed cancelled and I was only covered for TWO days, that I would NOT be receiving a refund due to fees. Had I known this would happen, I could have purchased the different policy next month and kept The General as I have now paid for two policies. There is nothing I can do but complain. Maybe someone would read this and decide not to purchase insurance through this company. Maybe someone else shares a similar story and won't feel so alone, will know that it wasn't just their misfortune but that someone has the same bad luck as them. Whatever the reason this happened to me is, I hope it serves a purpose because I feel extremely cheated. I'm sure The General does some things correctly, but this, this seems completely wrong.

She hit it so hard it pushed it up onto the sidewalk and bent the rear axle and dented the body from the rear tailgate to the front passenger side fender. There were people present with cell phones who took her license plate before she sped off. The officer on the scene claims she went to the police station and reported the accident, so she wasn't charged with hit and run nor was she intoxicated. So she was not charged or fined.

The police officer called her insurance company, The General, who verified she had a policy with them. Only after their agent inspected my husband's truck and verified that it was totaled, did they call to tell us that her payment had been made late and therefore would not cover the accident. Our insurance company, Geico, will now pay the state determined amount for "non-insured motorists" (about half the value) and we will have to try to get a salvage certificate from the DMV and sell it for salvage.

I am now footing the bill for the tow lot because they are dragging their feet. If you have to deal with them get an attorney. Just save yourself the stress. They are trying every little thing to try not to pay for this. They have even tried to list my vehicle as a total loss, it needs a new front bumper and fender well. It needs a few thousand worth of work, instead they are trying to scrap the whole thing. This is a custom vehicle, they would rather pay me the tens of thousands for the truck?

It makes no sense, my attorneys either. It’s a cut and dry case but these people are making it as hard as possible! They are rude, yell at you and speak over you then have the nerve to tell you “don't yell at me”. They say it regardless if you yell at them or not. As people their reps are lacking any moral fiber. It is sad, just sad, how they treat you during an already very upsetting time. Every time I call them I have to call my attorney and have them tell them they have to speak to me. Every time I call they say "because you hired an attorney we can't speak to you about this claim" so again my attorney has to call them and tell them they have to speak to me about it. It is illegal for them to not.

Their adjuster called me and asked if I knew my truck was being totaled and being taken to a salvage yard. I said no, he said “call them because it’s my professional opinion that this doesn't need to be totaled, you need to call them and tell them that and I will too”. Again they refused to speak to me so again we had to call our attorney. It is just stupid. I plead with you guys to never buy their insurance. I debated it before deciding to go with geico. So glad I went with them. Geico is going above and beyond to help me since the general won’t. I pray none of you have to deal with this company and I can’t believe they are still allowed to operate!

On April 23, I drove my 2006 BMW 325i through water about 6 in deep. The engine died. The car was pushed to a parking lot and later towed to Quality BMW's contracted body shop for the original estimate and later towed to my preferred mechanic's shop. The mechanic estimated the cost to repair $4500. I made a claim on 4/25 with my insurance company, The General. Jason **, a claims representative, contacted me and advised me to have the car towed to their yard - I was not happy. I did not know at the time, the yard is 70 miles away. The appraiser looked at the car on 5/12 and called me to ask if water gotten inside the car because she couldn't see any evidence of water damage.

On 5/22, almost a month after I made the claim, Jason called to say the car was a total loss. I was upset and confused as to why they would total it since the mechanic estimated it at $4500 to repair it. That was below the 70% of the value of the car. I said I didn't accept that the car was a total loss. I was referred to Joanne, a total loss adjuster. I left several messages for her that day with no response. At that point, I was so distraught, I found the location of the car from the insurance customer service. I called the yard to inform them I had the title in hand and was coming to pick the car up. They refuse to release it to me until the insurance company gave them permission.

After finally contacting Joanne the following day, I sent her the estimate for the repairs. She sent it to a Superior to look at. She told me she would call me as soon as she had info for me. In an email she said Jason would call me by noon and if he didn't I should call his supervisor. The email stated a teardown of the vehicle would need to be completed. I called the supervisor and left a message on the following Tuesday. He did not return my call. Please note, the estimate of the General's repair list included the replacement of interior jetting, cleaning and deodorizing of carpet, seat tracks cleaned and lube, seat belts inspected and lube etc. The only water that got in that car was from my soaking feet! I have rubber mats! I have invested over $1500 in rental car fees.

On June 6, 2014, I told the insurance company I wanted a second appraisal on my car damage. I wanted my car taken back to my mechanic for a second opinion. I did not agree with their estimate for damages to the inside of my car. They said they would release the car but I would have to have it towed back to the mechanics at my expense. Again, their yard is 70 miles away from me. I did have the car tow back to the mechanic I started with. Because the original motor was not available from the first estimate the new estimate of the cost of repair at $4800.00. Finding no damages to the inside of the car.

An auto detailer shop also confirmed that carpet has not been cleaned and there is no water damage to the inside of the car or inside the trunk as stated in the insurance estimate. Also said they could provide a statement detailing this. They had no explanation as to why the insurance company or the insurance adjuster would claim there was any damage to the inside of the car. Perhaps foul play or an incompetent adjuster. Regardless the insurance company should be responsible for the incorrect estimate. The price they gave me for my car if it was totaled is not a fair value of the car for this region. There are no other cars in the 2006 year range, in my car's condition, that I can replace it with. Either way I'm being cheated.

I had my car repaired, at my cost and it has been on the road since June. I have had no problems with it. It is running strong. The Permanent General wants to wrongly total that car. I feel they are trying to take advantage of me by not listening to my complaints. They say there's nothing they can do for me. Stated that the body shop and the repair shop or giving the estimates that are not complete because they don't include the damage done to the inside of the car. I can no longer deal with them.

If you ever have to file a claim with them EXPECT THE WORST EXPERIENCE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE OF YOUR LIFE!!! The claims rep that I had was rude, tried to talk over me, and did a terrible job of explaining anything. She never followed up on the estimate, the shop or even the adjusters. It took two weeks just to get the estimate done. The General does not offer the standard rental car policy, it is a reimbursement policy. So while you are waiting for the adjuster and The General to take their sweet time getting the estimate done you have to pay out of pocket for the car, UPFRONT!!! If I were wealthy to begin with I would not be using The General for my insurance company. I had a problem with this rep in a previous claim and had to ask that she be switched with someone else. I used their preferred service center as well. They had the car for over a month and mysteriously put over 1000 miles on my car during the time they had it. The repairs necessary for the car would not have required a 3 week turn around time anywhere else.

Every time I called to check on the status they told me they were doing the same thing day after day. No one tried to make up an original lie. They dropped the ball so much I thought that they were a pee wee football team. About a year after the repairs were done, things started falling apart and I had to go to them to receive reimbursement for repairs that I had to have redone at another location. I am now cancelling my policy with them and going somewhere else, even if it costs me more. The rates are high anyway and come down VERY SLOWLY.

This has to be the worst insurance company ever!! I have never in my life been treated so horribly by any company. The quotes are twice as high as other places and the agents I have dealt with blatantly lied to me. I had my 2003 Honda civic insured by them and at 43 with no violations and no other drivers, my full coverage was over 200 a month and the only explanation they would give me was that I drove the most stolen car in the US. So I trade the car in for a 2014 Mazda 2 and the insurance goes up to 250 a month.. I asked why and they had no answer for me.. I called around and can get the exact same coverage for 115 a month. So I call to cancel and am told I will have an early cancellation fee of 91.00 plus a percentage of the remaining policy. I'm not sure how they justify the percentage.

If you are honest and treat your customers well, you don't have to bully them with extra cost to stay.. I will be canceling early next month and they can bill me if they like but they will not see another dime from me. I won't pay to be bullied and threatened. This company needs to be put out of business.

About 1 month ago. I received a letter in the mail regarding having someone added to my insurance because mail records they accessed proved she resided at my physical address at some point. I have no idea who the person is/was, I innocently set the letter aside and forgot about it due to my busy work schedule. A few days ago I get another letter stating that since I didn't take the time to send proof that this person not only doesn't live with me, and never has, they just decided to add her to my insurance. Thus increasing my policy premium almost $750!!! for my 6 month period... I immediately made a phone call to resolve the matter! They were kind enough to remove the unknown person from my policy, and were quick to apologize but were very quick to tell me that since I didn't resolve the matter in time that I was still responsible to pay the increased policy premium for my next bill!

This made my bill go from the previous $280 to almost $600. I told them that this was not acceptable. They stated they sent me a letter and I didn't reply!!! I explained to them that I have had insurance with other companies in the past and if and when a mistake was made an adjustment was made thereafter to fix any mistake... The customer rep I spoke with told me that I had time to take care of it, and now I have to pay the new amount. I told her that I wanted to speak with a supervisor and wanted the adjustment made and she told me that she spoke to the supervisor and she told her the amount is what I need to pay!!! I let her know that I would be calling back, but not to speak to anyone, simply to cancel my policy and she thanked me and told me to have a nice day... (RUDE!) The funny thing and I mentioned this to them was that they have my address, my e-mail, and my phone number! All of which they make you verify when calling them, but they only chose to mail me, and expect a mail reply for the matter.

On another previous occasion when I mistakenly forgot to transfer money to my checking to cover a payment, not only did they mail me, they emailed me, and then called me to make sure the account was paid!!! But no one there was kind enough to call when a mistake was made on their behalf! Not only did they have no right to just add someone to my policy, without a verbal contact they have also made cancelling my policy a nightmare, and are telling me there may be an early cancellation fee for cancelling my policy before the renewal!!!

Avoid headaches and nightmares. Even if you have a bad driving history pay the extra $$$ and go with an upstanding reliable insurance company or agent, it will be worth it in the long run!

I purchased a policy on 3/01/11 from The General Auto Insurance. I was quoted for a down payment of $101 and monthly payments of $110. I have a clean driving record and no accidents. After purchasing my policy, they demanded I show proof of previous insurance coverage, which I promptly provided. Ten days later, my power steering pump went out and I was not able to drive my vehicle and had no idea when I could get it fixed so I contacted General to cancel my policy. The woman told me that they could make the cancellation effective 3/12/11 and that I would be charged 10% of the unearned prorated premium which is normal.

To cover ALL BASES and to prevent getting taken advantage of with extra fees, I sent this question: "I'm sorry to bother whomever with so many questions, however I have one more. Are there any fees associated with cancelling my policy early? I know that a percentage of my payment will be kept, yet are there any other fees that may be applied that haven't already been mentioned? "

The reply: "We are in receipt of your inquiry dated 03/12/14 and would like to thank you for allowing us this opportunity to assist you. Policy cancellations are subject to a cancellation fee of 10% of the prorated unearned premium. After this fee has been deducted, any outstanding refund will be credited back to your card. Please allow up to 7-10 business days for the refund to be issued and available."

So I figure okay, fair enough, I will wait for my refund of $101 after 10% is taken out and everything will be fine. Alas it wasn't. 10 business days later, I contacted them asking where my refund was. Only to be told that I wouldn't be receiving one b/c basically they nickel and dimed the ** out of me and ate up that whole $100 or random fees that I SPECIFICALLY asked to be mentioned. This is the email I got from my heated response to being told I would not receive a refund:

"We are in receipt of your inquiry dated 03/26/14 and would like to thank you for allowing us this opportunity to assist you. Please be advised that I have read over the previous emails sent to you by our representatives and it appears and you were notified that there was a cancellation fee of 10% of the unearned premium. Please note, the unearned premium is the amount that we will not receive due to the early cancellation of the policy.

Our records indicate that you submitted a down payment of $101.35 on 03/01/14. You requested to cancel the policy as of 03/11/14, which gave you ten (10) days of coverage. Please be advised that after your request to cancel the policy was received, you were charged for those ten (10) days that we covered you as well as your vehicle. Your full term premium for the entire six month term was $708.00, this amount included the MVR fee. Once we deducted your down payment, it left a balance of $606.65. We charged you for the days of coverage, any outstanding fees and 10% of the unearned premium. Once these amounts were deducted, there were no refunds due or balance owed."

Now WHERE THE HELL did a 6-month policy of $708.00 come from... I was not quoted NOR told my policy had changed and I would be charged almost double than about any other company that is out there.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR ANY REASON! ESPECIALLY TO SAVE MONEY BECAUSE THEY TAKE IT ALL. I can't stress that enough... ALL OF IT. They quote you low on a down payment and monthly payments... then when you purchase, they jack the ** up...then when you cancel b/c you're paying double what you would anywhere else, they take all of your money. I read these reviews before I used them, yet figured it's just some mad people or whatever. NO. These people are right. THIS COMPANY IS ** AND A WASTE OF MONEY.

I was your average paycheck to paycheck customer that had a cancellation 1 time in 1 year. I paid the last of my coverage off 2 months early. $179 to be covered until April 10th. I was looking in to financing an affordable car for my family. So I requested full coverage. They sent me a message saying I needed to take pictures of my vehicle. Well I'm a part time student, the only licensed driver in the house, have 3 kids (2 still in diapers), my husband is in The National Guard Reserves, and my husband is either needing to be taken around to put in applications or needing a ride to work every day. So it took me a couple of days to 2 weeks to get back to them on that. I received a bill in that time for almost half what I pay a month for insurance, and of course the infamous threat of cancellation sent with every bill.

Apparently everyone insured through them gets them. So I called: "Why am I being threatened to be cancelled when I paid my policy in full 2 months before I'm supposed to renew? And why am I being billed for an upgrade that shouldn't be in effect until I send in pictures of my car?" The first receptionist was very rude, and refused to try and help me at all. She just kept repeatedly saying: "Because you owe the money." ...with a very rude tone and attitude I might add. I wasn't having any attitude with her, I was being nice just straightforward asking my questions. Until she had no more to say to me than that, and started treating me without respect. I asked to speak to her supervisor. As soon as the supervisor was on the phone I explained everything and told them what I thought of the treatment I received from the "lady" that answered initially. The supervisor told me that she would cancel the upgrade and only charge me the prorated amount for the coverage since I had decided against keeping it after being dealt with the way I was. So my understanding there is the only thing I would be being charged was for the time I was covered by the parts of the upgrade I was covered by without the photos of my car.

When I got the bill again it was $23?!? And I was still being threatened with cancellation if I didn't pay it. So I called again... the first person I talked to didn't understand what I was trying to say to her. She just kept telling me I would get cancelled if I didn't pay in time. Again, I asked to talk to a supervisor. When connected, I explained the whole thing to him, and told him I didn't see how it was plausible to cancel on someone who was paid ahead before being charged that. After a little clarification for me we agreed that I would pay $6 by the due date of the bill, and that he could remove the $10 billing fee for charging me the $6 and the $7 for cancelling the upgrade.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm a busy woman. So I missed the 5 o'clock mark and paid the $6 at 10 pm. My bad. I emailed the next day about where they were sending the refunded amount owed back to me for my last whole month. They cancelled on me the day the bill for the last month, would have been due had I not paid it off previously. So all I owed was the $10 for billing me the $6, the $7 for cancelling an update. I was told I wouldn't be charged for cancelling, and the fee for allowing or asking to cancel a policy before its end date $9.20. My monthly bill was $94.60. I should have quickly established that my refund was $68.40, but I had to debate with them an entire day through email to get them to refund me what was due. I found out about the cancellation fee while debating with them. I thought I was due more.

After establishing how much they were going to refund me they told me that it would be 7-10 business days before I get it refunded to the account I last paid for my bill on. Then they kept sending me cancellation emails, offers to renew, and another email about the refunded amount they owed me informing me that they were refunding the $10 extra they were trying to bill me as a billing fee for cancelling, and that it would take up to 10 days for them to refund my money. So I'm guessing they wanted me to know it wasn't because I was right or anything, and that I can dang well wait as long as they legally can make me... I mean I only had to argue with them for 2 days to get my policy cancelled when they were going to do it anyway to figure out when I'm getting my refund, and how much it's supposed to be...It's been 3 days now... no refund yet. I'll post again if they don't... Nobody is perfect, but I know I wasn't bad to them in any way that deserved this kind of treatment and lack of business-like conduct. DO NOT GET ANY KIND OF INSURANCE FROM THEM!!

I just signed up with the General Ins. company less than a month ago and I received a threatening letter today that if I don't pay the next month's payment on its due date they will cancel my ins. This is absolutely crazy!! I called them and asked them why they are threatening me because I have never not paid on time and my bill isn't even due yet. They said they have to send me that letter because Oregon requires it and I told them that's ** because I had Progressive and they never sent me threatening letters before the due date...just statements. I told them their customer service is crap and I'm switching back to Progressive now. Why would anyone stay with an ins. company who sends them harassing, stressful letters every month???

I got my ins in 2010 and they loved my money until I was actually in an accident, then our relationship went wrong. A lady ran a stop sign and hit my car. I was injured and they are fighting not to pay medical bills. It's now 2013 and I'm still dealing with horrid insurance company. What a shame. I should have known better than to get ins with a little green man dancing around on a TV screen. STAY AWAY. I can not stress that enough.

I don't have a very good driving record and The General gave me a pretty good rate. I had just purchased a used car and went with The General's policy. After ONE week the transmission failed in my new (used) car so I took it back to the dealer and called The General to cancel. After 3 weeks of checking my credit card statement I still had not received a refund although I had received two letters of cancellation in the mail. I called them and the customer service rep informed me that I was owed a refund of $101 and should be receiving the check in under two weeks.

I paid $350 for the first month of coverage and because I only had the policy for 7 days I figured I would get almost all of my money back. WRONG! They had a fee for everything imaginable, although there was nothing about any fees in the policy. I wouldn't recommend The General to my worst enemy and would strongly recommend you go with someone else, even if it costs a little more.

Then I paid my bill on the due date but they didn't "process" it until the next day so they said my policy lapsed. I only had The General two months. My husband had gotten hurt and we were struggling and our car insurance had cancelled so I thought I'd try The General. The rates seemed okay since we had a lapse in coverage so I got it. When the due date came to pay, I was scheduled to get paid just a couple of days later. My assumption that there was a grace period was way off. Three days after the due date, the payment was made. At that time I found out it was cancelled. They said they could reinstate it, but it was WITH a lapse in coverage. I took it knowing it was my only choice. I had bought a used car shortly after and when it was added, suddenly the cost was outrageous and my next payment was going to be difficult to manage. When it got close to the next payment, I contacted Geico. Their payments were not much more than The General was before adding the car and I felt better about it all. I e-mailed the General to cancel. Got the confirmation.

My car was in an accident in Aug. 2012. Debris from an 18-wheeler hit my car with 4 others in Az. The 18-wheeler is responsible for the damage. We did a police report and I filed a claim with PG. They sent an adjuster who said minus my $500 deductible, I would be issued $142 for repairs. The check was issued to my finance company, not me. My repairs, once in the shop, came to be $998.87. I called PG back and asked if they contacted the 3rd party. I was told they did and they had no record of the accident and I would have to wait 3-7 weeks to get a police report to see if it was my fault or not, before they could proceed.

Well, I called the 3rd party and guess what? They had record of the accident and never received a call from PG. The 3rd party agent issued me a rental car and called the shop to get my car fixed. During this time we, myself and the 3rd party, tried to call PG and no one would return any of our calls. Now 5 months later, they are requesting me to pay back the $142 because they made an error. Well, if the agents did their job correctly from the start of the claim, then there would be no reason to contact me now. This company has poor customer service and is, all in all, a horrible company

I have been with PGAC since 2008. Everything was great for a while. The low rates were wonderful and it felt like a blessing when I first got the policy.

However, the minute I got a violation, things began to change. I changed my address in 2010, and my policy went up $30 a month. I assumed that it was because I moved closer to an interstate. It was not clear though, because while my original address was only about 2 miles from a busy interstate, the new address was maybe a mile away from an interstate, but in a more affluent area. The same day I changed my address, I got a speeding ticket, ironically, while working to assist a friend. They did wait until my new policy started; however, they went up on my insurance even though the ticket carried no points violation.

In the fall of 2010, I was in an accident at a parking lot. Technically, the accident could have been considered to be driver's fault. There was no signage or markings on the asphalt, and I was going straight and the other driver was making a left turn. When I talked to the claims adjuster, he claimed adamantly that he was not going to put me at fault, that "he was not going to even look at it when it came to his desk", and said "don't worry about it". I never heard anything back from the company for at least 45 days, so I started calling to try to find out what was going on, but I got transferred around. I couldn't seem to get him on the phone. When I got someone, they told me that I was charged with the accident! I called a few more times to ask the adjuster why it had changed. When I finally got him, he claimed that he had no choice because after reading the police report and looking at satellite images, the arbitration department felt that they had to charge me. He said that it might not have seemed fair, but sometimes that's how it went.

A month later, I was in another accident where I was hit by a car that turned behind me at a light. I had no damages really, because the minivan's bumper basically hit my rear tire. The lady was rude and irate for no reason. She had also been on her cell phone. When the police got there, she started acting irate and telling lies. The officer had to tell her that she needed to calm down. He also ended up catching her in a lie. After exchanging insurance info, she berated PGAC and said that she has never heard of them. The police officer ended up giving both of us tickets because he claimed that a judge would have to make the decision.

A few weeks later, I went to court. The judge dropped the charges and said that I could not be placed at fault, after reading the police report, and dismissed the case. When my renewal came around, my premium had almost doubled. When I asked why, I was told that I was charged with two At Fault accidents and a speeding ticket. I asked the rep why I was not notified about it and how it was possible, when the last time the judge even dropped the case. She proceeded to tell me that because I only carried liability coverage, PGAC was not required by law to report those decisions to me. It turned out that they only paid $3000 for the first instance (not even sure if it was $3000) and a little over $900 for the second, so why did my premium almost double? Well, the young lady told me once again, the arbitration department decided to pay for the damages.

In the fall of 2011 my car's suspension went out, so I had to cancel the insurance because I wasn't driving the car. When I came back to reinstate it 5 months later in the spring of 2012, my insurance was even more than it was when I canceled. Not only that, I told the salesperson that I could produce proof that I shouldn't have been charged with the last accident. I got really busy and forgot to send in the paperwork. 2 weeks later I got a new policy in the mail with the amount adjusted higher. They just wrote a new policy and also changed my due date without telling me. I called to tell them that the new due date would not work because of when I get paid, and they told me that I couldn't change it because that should have been done when the policy was written. I told him that they did that without my consent, but he told me that there was nothing that could be done until renewal.

Just over a month ago, I got so fed up that I finally switched to American Family Insurance. When I first went with PGAC back in 2008, my insurance was just $87/mo. for liability, only for state minimums. I now carry premium, full coverage insurance with the bells and whistles for only $92 month - you do the math.

Hidden cancellation fees and fraud: Do not get the General. it is a total and complete ripoff. They may be able to give you a great state minimum with next-to-no coverage, but as soon as you need full coverage, your rate is jacked up big time. Mine went from $100 per month (state minimum coverage), then I bought a new car. Full coverage by Geico is $147; the General full coverage is $255! What a ripoff!

Then after having them for 6 months, I canceled the policy. After cancelling, they sent me a 10% fee (Cancellation fee is 10% of all your premiums you paid to them thus far). And since I cancelled the policy a few days early, I could be refunded for 4 days of insurance. They told me they would notify me of what refund they owe me within 60 days. Meanwhile, they would send me my bill that I owe them in 48 hours.

Honestly, if you are driving a crap car and own it (not financed or leased) and you want bare minimum coverage, they are reasonable. In every other situation, the policy is near theft; and to get out of it, they will steal more of your money. If I had the time, I would copy and paste my story to 1000s of websites.

On 6/10/10, I paid the monthly premium of $214.55 through internet banking (they take it directly out of my account for my grandson's auto insurance). Prior to making the payment, I faxed a letter informing them the policy would be canceled effective on 6/30/10. I also asked for a refund for the period July 1-10, 2010 because I was paid to the 10th of July. I received no reply and no refund. However, today 9/11/10, I received a letter from a collection company (NCO Financial Systems, Inc.) informing me that I had an outstanding balance due to Permanent General of $28.30.

I contacted them and they told me they could charge me 10% of the "unearned premium" according to the policy. They said the "unearned premium" was the balance due on the policy through the end of the policy period and that amounts to $826.70, which includes monthly fees (it is $790.00 without the fees). If that is the case, why does the policy states under Sec. G. Refund of Premium, page 5, that you may be entitled to a 90% refund of the pro-rated unearned premium? They said the unearned premium is the balance due on the policy through the end of the policy period. If that is correct, how can I receive a refund for something I did not yet pay?

It is my understanding that the unearned premium would be that portion of the policy that was prepaid and not used, thus the 10 days in July. After talking to 3 other people, I talked to a supervisor named Diane and she said she would have to call me back. I am still waiting. They tried to tell me that the monthly premium was for the past month and that you do not pay in advance. When I asked this question, the first person I talked to said you always pay in advance. I, too, wish I had not been seduced by PGAC's commercials. It is true that their rates were substantially less than my previous insurance company, but I should have remembered what my grandmother always told me about getting what you pay for. To make a long story short, it took days for their system to accept my payment and their website would not allow me to electronically sign the policy. Almost immediately, I received a letter stating I was being cancelled for lack of signature. I received a copy of the policy with no signature pages and the admonition to electronically sign the policy. When the site failed to allow this, I phoned and asked for a hard copy of the signature page. I allowed 10 business days to pass before calling again and requesting again a hard copy of the signature page. This time, I received nothing.

Finally, over a month after my original request, papers show up with signature lines. Of course, they also showed up 3 days after they lapsed the policy for "lack of signature". Their customer service reps do not answer messages on voicemail and ignore questions in emails. I faxed information to them and attempted for two days to ascertain the fax arrived, only to be told on the third day that they had no record of receiving it. PGAC is more callous and uncaring than your average insurance company (which is saying a lot) and their customer service and accountability is nonexistent. I cannot even imagine how they would treat an actual claim. By the way, since their computer told them they did the right thing, they pretty much called me a liar to boot.

Don't use them. Run away. They aren't even listed on JD Powers rating site for auto insurance companies! Pay the extra money for your old company and remember what grandmother said: You get what you pay for! As an addendum, I have been calling the supervisor who is handling this problem for hours to confirm if my fax has arrived. She was supposed to call me. Ha! I am now on death hold waiting to speak to her supervisor! As a single mother on a limited income, unfortunately I have had a period of 33 days wherein I was uninsured. Due to this fact, I expect that my license and/or registration will be suspended which will result in an onerous burden in the form of fines and fees. Not to mention the fact that I have no family in the area and I need my card!

Well in April of 2008 my partner Mark and I received a letter from our private insurance co. AARP canceling our auto policy on both vehicles ( private) because they discovered Mark's CDL had been suspended for 4 in a half months. My partner went and took care of it and had it back in one business day! Turned out that from a ticket or accident through Mark's dump truck driving job somehow 3 points were put on instead of two? Plus he had given an address change to an mvd in Mesa and Az mvd had our current address and failed to notify us. Anyway after getting my car up from it being parked from a censor going out in 9/2008 a policeman pulled me over saying my registration was suspended and he took my plate! It cost to get it all straightened out for both of our private vehicles and I was so angry at AARP for completing the dropping of our policy even though Mark had his license re-en stated.

Then I purchased a policy with the general's web-site on-line September 3, 2008 in the am. They quoted me and I agreed to a 10% down payment and ELEVEN monthly payments. 8 days later I received a letter from PGAC saying my first payment was due on the 18th of that same month. I had to halt auto-debit, because I am on a fixed income and have NO money in my account on the 18th. So every single month since then I've been receiving bills twice a month, my policy has been canceled on for example I paid on-line on the 2nd one month and a cancellation notice canceled it anyway on the 3rd and re-en stated it at the same moment and added $15.00 re-en statement fees for 21 months.

Due to my partner being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer stage 4, now in his bones was unable to work and we sold one of our cars. I had a notary sign the title on the 3 rd of January and PGAC refuses to give me credit for that date. I wanted to mention we were ordered to have SR-22s and I believe this is the driving factor behind PGAC's canceling and re-instating my policy. They also have been trying to FORCE me to pay off early and they are trying to say I owe them $230.32 for the 4 months remaining of my policy year on the one vehicle. According to all of the letters I've saved all having different due dates, canceled and re-instated on all different dates, so no matter when I paid my monthly premium they canceled and re-instated, I feel to add 21 months of re-instatement fees which if they did cancel TWICE a month for 21 months it would be $650.00, once a month would be about $360.00. They keep upping my monthly premiums!

So I am disputing the last letter I received wanting a $123.00 premium for May, when I supposedly owe $230.32 for 4 months left in the year. That would mean next month I would only owe $107.00 for the year, NOT counting the fees they will tack on. I have faxed them, (I have copies) asking for relief, We have called them and all they say is we do not cancel in advance, we do not bill bi-monthly (while I am holding the bills in my hand) and we do not force people to pay off early. No one will answer me on the fees being added to the end of my total. I am asking for help or guidance on how to handle this. Yesterday I faxed them a copy of my disputing/objecting of the $230.32 they say I owe for the remainder of the year.
