My overall experience was great. I would recommend them to anyone. It's so easy being able to sign up online and have everything sent via email. I also like that the website is not confusing at all. Easy to follow. I could do everything online and not have to go to an office. I like not having to do stud face to face and wait in a lobby for days. I was completely happy with my policy and service.

I searched and looked everywhere for price rates and quotes and The General was the best insurance company for me. I like the price, the coverage, nice and understanding people, and they do a really good job, fast response. But I really would like to have lower monthly payments and I would love if they would give out no accident checks like other insurance companies do. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing because I really like my insurance company better than any other.

The General offers many coverage options. If I have an accident and need to make a claim they make it very easy and it's also very affordable with low payments and minimum coverage if that's all you need. The customer service is great and they make you feel like family and will walk you through the whole process of whatever questions you have. But they should have more main offices that are local in case I need to make a claim or come in to change a policy or just ask questions. All in all it's a good quality company that I prefer and would also recommend to my friends and relatives if they were looking for a great insurance company. It's a very welcoming feeling being covered by such a great company.

Bought policy online, it was quick & easy. I liked that. No problems, no hassle. Very satisfied for the most part and we'd go w/ The General again, guaranteed. But the cost seems a little high, compared to insurance companies I've used in the past. It was unexpected since they advertise on their tv commercials to be a cheaper alternative. It was misleading. Maybe their customer service makes up for the cost being a bit higher. But it'd be very nice if the cost goes down w/ time. Given your driving is good & no tickets are obtained.

Purchasing was good and easy to do on my android device. It was easy to enter information and get my quote. I like that The General works with your background and they overlook some accidents if it's been two or more years. I have a few wrecks on my record and they wrote them off so I can get lower fees. It was also the same day that I got coverage from The General. However, I don't like that they increase the payment without telling me and that I can't switch my due date to correspond with my paychecks which it enviably cancels my policy through The General but once paid it activates it immediately.

Their representatives are very pleasant to deal with and easy to understand. I like the fact that you could access your policy on your phone and it is good for somebody that is on a fixed income but they do offer to take it directly out of your banking account. It makes it affordable for people who have to have full coverage but are on a fixed income. However, when you have to file a claim they are right on it but they give you so many numbers that it's hard for the doctor's office for their computers. Furthermore, they only due 6 mos policies at a time. Even though the same vehicles that are on the policy the premium goes up never decrease. They tell me that it's the state that I live in is why the premiums keep going up.

Great experience. I have compared premiums and found they were best for our situation. Easy to purchase over the phone and online. Quick and painless. I like the price, online accessible, easy to reinstate, friendly customer service. I was set up for text reminders and it went off at 3am. I had to discontinue the auto text reminder as not to be woken at odd hours. Everything else is perfect! I have never had any problems and would recommend them to family and friends.

I had this insurance when I was younger and on a very tight budget and I only wanted liability to be legal. The General's insurance was easy to get, very affordable, and fit what I needed at the time. I just needed to get an insurance policy quickly so I could drive my car legally. It didn't take long to get a quote and they took my payment over the phone so I would have insurance immediately. They even faxed me a copy of my insurance information so I would have something to verify that I had insurance if I were to get pulled over. The only issue I had was later when I tried to purchase insurance from another company, they did not recognize The General as an insurance company to get a policy with them.

The customer service and pricing are great, they make sure that you understand your options and what you are getting. If you are involved in an incident they are there to help walk you through the process and they pay out claims quickly without hassle. They do everything that they say they are going to do and I have not had any issues with this company.

The General Auto Insurance was the only one that will insure me. No one else will insure me and they don’t explain why they can’t at all either. The purchasing process was very rushed through the paperwork. Was told what I needed and what I didn’t need. They signed me up for other policies I told them I didn’t need. They rewrote it up and said they took it off. Which they didn’t at all and I had to call the company to complain before they would even listen to me. I even asked them to talk to a manager. They told me I didn’t need to at all. Customer service is really bad. I had stuff like roadside assistance added and was told it was free. Come to find out it wasn’t free at all. I was being charged for it even though they told me since I have full coverage there would be no charge. They also do not like dealing with you when trying to settle a claim.

They had fair premiums without crazy high deductibles for not top of the line nor bottom of the barrel but decent coverage. It was very fast and easy to get a policy online. Just a few clicks on a keyboard and was insured. No waiting for papers to be mailed and can all be done electronically in a snap. My card was sent to my mobile device as well as my email so I had proof on the spot that I had coverage should anything go wrong. But they are sometimes not as helpful with explanations of coverage, as I would like them to be. Like all insurance companies they want their loopholes in order to not have to pay out full payment. Sometimes the customer support can be downright rude. Also, their commercials need an update. But The General was adequate for its purpose and I know myself and family are insured and will be taken care of.

Found that The General was finally offered in my state and that it was cheapest. Ordered insurance and printed instant proof of insurance. I like that I can buy online after getting an anonymous quote. Don’t have to give personal information unless you decide to buy. But customer service is lousy. Hard to speak with anyone. Should have more discounts. Also, phone representatives should be available 24/7. Other than that, it’s perfect.

I am very simple minded about my car insurance. I need it to be affordable and within the legal ramifications needed. I looked for the cheapest insurance to fit my needs. The General is affordable and it meets the minimum requirements to be legal in the state of Arizona. We purchased our insurance online, it was quick and easy and I have zero complaints.

The General auto insurance is easy to purchase. When I first purchased my insurance it was only covering me and 1 vehicle. Then I added my husband and another vehicle through the app which is easy to use and make changes in it. I'm able to add drivers and vehicles with ease and downloadable insurance cards can be saved to my phone or printed. But auto pay doesn't work very well and I never had a payment got through when it was supposed to. It makes it really hard to keep track of my bank account. Also app updates all the time and during the update you cannot access your insurance information. But overall, I love The General. They have friendly customer service.

The price is reasonable and it is easy to pay online every month. Customer service is very helpful when I've needed it and employees are friendly and informative. Affordable and satisfyingly great coverage for my vehicle as well as my husband and daughter's vehicle. Every time I have needed anything they have been there to help and give good advice on how to handle all situations involving my vehicle and my husband and daughter. But I would make it easier to add more adults to my policy and perhaps make it cheaper for my husband and daughter to be added to the same policy as well as their vehicles and other vehicles for which we would want to add in the future perhaps at other times.

They are easy to get a hold of. They have good rates to choose from and they have a variety of options. They have a good website to look up all information and answer most of your questions if not they have a number on the website as well. It was a good experience but I have had problems and they would never be able to fix or help. Customer service could be improved, every time I am on the phone with someone I am on hold for a very long time. They never can give me all the information I need and say I would have to call back at a later time. But I don't like that they go up really high when you add or you get a different vehicle. Their customer service is nice if you get the right person on the phone. Other than that they show interest and support but they don't always give you all the information they need. Their policy could be better but overall it has a good coverage option. I would still recommend them to people who ask.

Purchasing the insurance was fairly easy. It was pretty much all handled over the phone. It is a better price for all of the features it offers us. However, they are not personable at all. I am used to someone at least getting to know my name and repeating it back. This is like pushing cattle through. It's all business I guess. Also, they required proof that I did not cause the accident I was involved in. Even though I was rear-ended on the freeway and the other driver admitted to being at fault to me, to the police and to her insurance company too. I guess I should not expect much in regarding service when it was mostly done online and they made us go through hoops to prove the accident was not our fault.

My overall experience with Progressive has been fair. Their agents are very helpful and quick to process claims. However, they should have more agents that are fluent in the English language. The insurance is cheap but they could have less penalties for tickets, cheaper premiums for full coverage, and a better liability policy. But I am able to take my car to any shop and have repairs done. Also, when I purchased policy online, they provided immediate proof of insurance after that. I didn't have to worry and was able to drive legally safe.

After reading all the negative reviews I was expecting the worse! Omg was. I wrong. I bought my car from Hertz Cr sales in Mesquite TX. The experience with the General was great! My premium was $173 a month for full coverage. Now after 6 months I renewed my insurance with the General and my premium actually has gone down to $154 a month. Everyone has a different experience. Mine was great. The website is easy and online payments are also very easy.

I was not pleased and there was nothing specific that I liked about the policy. They overcharged for minuscule coverage and the minuscule coverage for an assigned amount of money is not the type of plan I prefer. This plan was not a right fit for my family and I am glad we switched to a better company. We only used this one because we needed insurance fast and didn’t shop around first. This company was a big mistake. I pay less now for more coverage through a different company. They also tried to charge when I had already paid my monthly charge. I would never recommend General Auto to anyone.

It was an easy online process to purchase the insurance. Everything was a quick fill in answers and they helped fill in blanks on driving history. Inexpensive, easy access on the website to make any and all changes to my policy. Policy was able to be customized and I was able to change my due date to work with my finances. However, I'm not able to dedicate where my car gets towed away to after an accident. I wish they would take home locations into account when it comes to towing locations. Also, payments take 3 or 4 days to show up on the website when checking for it.

Trying to understand and navigate the website was hard and took some patience. They need to offer assistance possibly online chat. But I liked the ease of getting the quote and policy online. It was a fast way to get immediate insurance. I was able to purchase the policy quick and print out proof of insurance. But cost of the insurance was high. They do not make the coverage easy to understand. They required a great deal more down than other companies.

The General Auto Insurance has lots of advantages and has state minimum which I wanted because I'm disabled and don't drive distance just to Doctors, hospitals, chemo appts and to pharmacy and to little stores for household needs. However, I don't like that I don't have roadside assistance since I'm disabled in case of an emergency. But that's the downfall with state minimum insurance and cheaper cost of insurance too. Overall General Auto Insurance do stick to their word. They don't change their prices. Actually after you been with them a while they said they will drop it cheaper.

With The General you answer a few questions and you're done. They are doing an amazing job with their services. It is easily accessible, easily affordable, and the overall process is easy. Prices are low and I don't feel like they give me the run around... I would continue to use them on just their prices alone and they are always really nice and personable on the phone as well. But they send too much paperwork in the mail and they don't communicate with each other within the company as well as they should. I was receiving tons of paperwork saying my policy was cancelled due to non payment when I had actually called and changed my address because I had moved. The move to a different state changed my policy and they had not communicated within the company that the new policy negated the old one and that I was paid in full for the year. But I personally have gotten great service from The General.

Getting the insurance was fairly easy and getting a quote wasn't hard either. I like the easy online pay and get everything instantly. Download and print all your insurance cards and monthly bills as well... Good customer support as they seem to work with people on things pretty great. But although they were the cheapest they're still extremely hard on a person's wallet. Their website also tends to crash almost every other day which gets very annoying. I also dislike its layout. And they will take money out before your due date causing overdraft fees. They need more discounts and a easier pay schedule and down payment as well. Also needs more insurance coverage for owners with classic cars. Such as they need full coverage for them.

They were able to give me the lowest rate. I only have liability coverage and other companies wanted to charge me twice as much for the exact same coverage. It was easy to start the policy. I did it online. They insisted I provide a copy of an accident report proving I was not at fault and they kept sending me emails and letters even though I sent it multiple times. They finally got it corrected though. However, they start "threatening" to cancel your policy two weeks before payment is due for "non-payment". They have told me it's just a reminder notice but I do not like the wording implying that I haven't paid when the bill isn't even due yet.

My policy is easy to pay with no hassle of having to call it in each month. Also, they give many great discounts varying from being married to have a vehicle with an alarm. Purchasing the auto insurance was an easy process, however I dislike that when starting up with the company they do not mention about additional costs you may encounter. The insurance can improve by lowering the cost for making a change to the policy, such as adding an extra driving or removing or adding a vehicle to the policy.

Most insurance companies have the online option, but when I shopped around I found the General to be the most convenient. I can also manage my policy easily and they have great prices as well. However, it can be time consuming, trying to reach a live person on the phone. When I did get through, I felt like I was inconveniencing them. Purchasing the insurance was not bad. But other times were. Like when I called in to get a quote because my son thought he was going to move back into my home and wanted to be added to my insurance, The General Auto Insurance took it upon themselves to say that he did move into my house and because I didn't sign papers and send them in with his information they cancelled my insurance. Since when does someone say a quote and thinking about moving in confirmation that I want the insurance and he did move in?
Then, the hold time to speak with someone is crazy. The customer service people you speak with suck. Most of them are very rude and act like they don't want to talk to you on the phone. I've been lied to by them when trying to correct their mistakes. When it came to correcting my account and they owed me money they said everything to get out of paying me back. Went as far as saying it was my fault. Then after awhile finally got them to admit their mistake and got my money back.
Only thing I like with this company is I was still able to get roadside assistance. Without full coverage. I also get towing which is very important to someone who has problems with lifting. If I have a flat then I can call someone out to help when I can't do it and my husband can't because of his medical conditions. I really enjoy using the General insurance. I have been with them a long time and wouldn't think of switching at this time unless something very different came about. It covers all my needs. It's also cost-effective and allows me online access to my insurance card very easily. However, I do wish for something new that would set insurances apart since they all seem to have very basic needs and I find them to be less competitive when it comes to renewals. Also I do wish that there would be a better website for claims for roadside assistance because I do have the coverage but it's so poor that I also have AAA and wait time on claims and using roadside assistance especially during a holiday.
I like that you can go on one website and get a quote from multiple companies. It was very simple just answering some online questions and a quick chat with an agent but what I do not like is the fact when you put in your information you get spammed by so many companies that it is aggravating. So I found another insurance company that would take me on and when I told The General about it a few weeks before my next payment was due they didn't like that so they contacted the DMV and told them that I was driving without insurance which was not true and that penalize me for the whole year where I had to pay a huge amount of money every month for a year because of what general insurance did to me by lying and stating that I was driving without insurance and this is how they do you when you cancel your account with them. And I can easily get a representative on the phone if I need immediate assistance. When I had questions, I was able to start a live chat or request a call back from a representative or just dial in. But I would like to change accident forgiveness. Drivers should not have to pay higher premiums because of incidents that occurred 5 years or more. This would make insurance rates more competitive without all of the penalties or higher premiums.

The process of getting insurance from The General was relatively easy! You have lots of different policies to choose from and choices as to what your deductible will be. Plus, they offer great prices. Filling out an application to get insurance is easy and it all can be done online. They ask a bunch of questions which you must answer. Once you answer all and submit them back, your driving history is checked and if all pans out, someone will contact you about an actual policy. And although the company isn't as personable and you don't ever see who you are dealing with, you can take care of most issues on the internet and they are very fast at taking care of claims!

The General Auto Insurance was cheap when we first got them. Only changed because we found something a tad cheaper. Other than that, it was a great experience.

I'll be brief and to the point. I provided this company with my information multiple times, which you would think would ensure accuracy. This was not the case here. My sister and mother were supposed to be included in my policy, but they were never added, only their vehicles were included. When I provided their information for the third time since the initial call, the following month my premium had increased by $200. When I called to ask for an explanation on the increase, I was informed they had never actually been added to the policy, meaning they were paying part of the bill for months, but were never actually covered under the policy; and we had no idea because we thought providing their names, birth dates and license numbers meant they were added to the policy from the start. Silly us!
When I spoke to a manager after the third issue I had with them, she made no attempt to offer me any sort of solution and was more than happy to process my cancellation. I guess The General has so many happy customers, they don't really need another one. Although that would be easier to believe if this site wasn't flooded with negative reviews and 1-star ratings (only because you can't give no stars). Conclusion, save yourself the headache and waste of time and find a different insurance company. There's plenty of much better options out there for us.

Reading the reviews on here I am shocked. I expected a horrible experience after my truck was t-boned, and finding this site, however I didn't. Reporting the claim was easy, my claims rep was fast and efficient in getting everything taken care of. My car loan was paid off and I was paid the difference all before we even found that the other driver didn't have coverage. So I was reimbursed my deductible rather quickly. So far the uninsured motorist claim I have in for medical bills is going ok. I didn't expect it to be fast, but it is moving along. I've experienced nothing but great customer service each time I call in. What I hate the most would be the hold times. Other than that, they are affordable and so far to me have been a good service. I've been there for 4 months now and I have never dealt with so many issues. The phone number on my agents email was wrong, they don't contact you when important account changes happen (unless you count paper mail which is slow and annoying to deal with). The people on the phones are alright at best and I've had nothing but issues trying to resolve simple things like annual mileage, the reply time on the email side is...well I'm at 10 days right now, then it took me a while to find a contact number (after I called the number on the email signature it took me to some other company where the lady explained that "this happens all the time because they give the wrong numbers out").
The other issue I have is that if you are late on a payment (not late but past due, where you have a grace period) they immediately send out account cancellation notices which take a week to arrive, so you call to figure out what happens and they say, "Oh it's all resolved it's just old paper mail" but...of course the phone number is incorrect so I have to go find it online first after trying and failing once.
I switched from AAA just because it was pricey but it's totally worth it. I asked a manager to contact me from the general and I have not heard back. I can only imagine the going through claims. Don't bother with them. The price may be attractive but it's not really worth the headaches. One star for service for those reasons. Value gets a two for just being somewhat less expensive (although it really isn't they just charge you 12 months instead of 10 at a time). Coverage...well they keep almost canceling me for things like insufficient mileage letters (which isn't all their fault) but they don't inform me of this problem except for paper mail which takes a week.

Don't expect this with The General. The staff seem be work from home employees who are untrained, un-knowledgeable, who will lie to you to get you off the phone, or out of the online chat. So if you want to save a few bucks, and never deal with them go ahead, but I prefer a company that treats the buyer with respect. I have The General Auto Insurance as of current and back in November I hit a deer. So I make a claim and everything is good. Joe ** (the adjuster) calls me back and they send a check for 3 thousand something dollars which is two thousand cheaper than the car shop's quote. I get a call from the car shop telling me my quote had used parts on it which they do not make for my car. I have a Cadillac CTS-V. So no problem. He calls them and I call them. Joe ** didn’t call him back for two weeks and when he tried to get ahold of his supervisor he was told it’s not in his hands. So this repairman had been fighting with them for two weeks to get my car fixed.
Now I’m really ticked off. I’ve been without a car for two going on three months now and my so called adjuster has fallen off the face of the earth and won’t call back. Not only that, the places that they quoted for the “used” parts aren’t there and they don’t have used parts for my car!! So now I’ve been paying 408 dollars a month for “car insurance” that can’t seem to understand the fact that my car needs new parts. I called Mr. ** yesterday within his “work hours” which are 10 am to 5 pm (ridiculous, I know!) Pacific time and still haven’t had a callback. The general also said they will not make any payments for aftermarket parts which is the next option since no used parts, until my car is in the shop and broken down ready to be repaired, but if they do that I’ll be waiting months for my car and who knows if they’ll even pay!!
Do not get The General Auto Insurance and be blinded by their low payments which is the reason why I chose them. They are a hassle to work with. My car still isn’t fixed, still no callback. I’ve been paying 408 dollars a month for a little over 1 year and they will not work with me or my choice of shop to get my car fixed. Now I thought when you paid for services that you get said services. I will be calling today and talking to whoever I can to get this done and if not then I hope they give me back my money since they can’t fix my car and I can move on to better, real car insurance. Bottom line: don’t use The General for car insurance, they are insurance brokers who rip people off like me.

After months and eventually over a year of stress over the issues my car was having I had to pay over $2000 in repairs because the company that repaired the car only did the body work and failed to do their job to check on the work that was needed. I had to replace my rotors 7 times in 4 months since the wheel hub and bearing were damaged from the accident and the caliper was hanging which they also did not fix. I called and emailed my adjuster consistently for months with no regard or responses. I had to pay $2000 in repairs myself.

The highway is 4 lanes and I was in one of the left lanes and put on my directional to move into the far left lane because I had 30 plus miles before my exit. There was a man driving a 2003 burgundy Chevy Tahoe about 3 car lengths back giving me more than enough room to move over. My directional must have aggravated him because he FLOORED it to prevent me from moving over. I had just begun to move over when he ran into the back of my 2015 Sorento at probably 80 mph knocking me forward and as I move immediately back into the other lane then over to the breakdown lane on the right side of the highway.
I got out to inspect the damage and wiped down the side of my car to assess the damage. The man in the Tahoe videotaped me and emailed it to my insurance company. The highway patrol who responded was extremely rude and aggressive and told me to stay in my car or he was going to take me to jail. The police report is written with only one point of view which states that I made an unsafe lane change. Merged into the side of the Tahoe forcing him into the concrete barrier on the side of the road. I was unable to take pictures because the cop would not let me out of my car. I requested the photos from my insurance co. The General and they told me I was not entitled to that evidence or the videos. I called NC Dept of Ins and Banking and they advised I was absolutely entitled to anything being used against me.
I finally got the photos which clearly show the damage to the back of my car and the front of his Tahoe. He filed a claim against me and my insurance co settled with him. I finally have a manager who is reviewing the incident. My adjuster was VERY rude and never would call me back and refused to acknowledge the photos showing there is no way the incident happened the way the police report stated. There was only about $839.00 damage to his vehicle and $4,000 to mine and he is now filing medical soft tissue claims for him and another person in the car. There was so much evidence that he was at fault and hit me and my insurance company sided with him and there was ABSOLUTELY nothing I could do.
As my insurer they should be doing everything to protect me but I everything I said was ignored and my adjuster told me she did not have time to deal with me and TOLD me they were covering his damages and holding me at fault!!! How do you go from being insured to all of a sudden missing a payment within the span of days? I was never able to get a license number or any information on the vehicle or the driver, so The General thinks it's okay NOT to pay for the damage to my rear bumper, and the State of California Department of Insurance seems to back them up in this. California law doesn't require them to pay for hit-and-run property damage.
I am working with the local police department to see if we can identify any damaged vehicles that stopped at the stoplight about three blocks ahead of where the accident occurred, which is a major, busy intersection where they are likely to have cameras. I am also working with my state legislator to see about changing the law. Still, I am angry that this isn't covered.

Two weeks later and we are still fighting with them to pay for a rental car while her undrivable car is in the shop. I paid my policy payment not realizing that they couldn’t just swap states two days before I moved. NH doesn’t require insurance but I’m responsible and wanted liability. Well they told me NH had all these requirements and they had to cancel my VT Insurance to issue a NH. They only allowed me a refund of $60 dollars from my $110 payment which they were to apply towards a my new policy plus I had to pay $13.98 to complete the payment. So I did.
I was told the next payment would be due on the 9th. of next month of $65 and some change. I get a call tonight saying I have to pay yet another 65.98 for them to issue my policy. Which is not what they originally told me. So I told them to cancel the policy and I do not want a early cancellation fee due to them not knowing what they are doing. I find it very hard to believe NH has all these requirements for insurance coverage when they don’t even require you to carry insurance. I think they are making you have more coverage than what is actually needed. That they are requesting more money than was originally said is very sketchy. As of September 01, 2017, I had sold my vehicle, it was insured by The General and as of July 2017, I had renewed my policy for a whole fiscal year for $759.75 - Liability. But when I had contacted the insurance co. they had informed me in order to receive a refund, they needed a copy of bill of sale with signature's and to fax to their office, which they gave me the fax #, which in two instances had been incorrect, this began to upset me and when I finally sent copy to correct fax, the date was Sept. 22, 2017.
I then contacted their office in Arizona, stating that it would not be approved without a hand written consent from me stating I was canceling my policy, now I BECAME FURIOUS and demanded to speak with someone from the corporate office. I was finally connected with corporate on the October 4, 2017, that the young lady I spoke with would handle it and that I would receive payment the very next day. Well it's now October 5, 2017 Thursday evening 6:28 pm and still have not received a penny!

I paid my monthly premium and used on 10 days worth, I cancelled because I got much better rates with Progressive... And they said, "the remaining $67 was applied to fees," etc... Screw that... I WILL CONTINUE TO FILE COMPLAINTS UNTIL THEY REFUND MY MONEY.

I had General for 2 years. I'll start with "my mistake" on being less than a week late on 2 payments in a row through the span of my business with them. Unfortunate, but understandable reasoning. I am someone who needs paper billing in order to stay on top of things. During a move, I had updated my information with them online. I'm always very tedious when it comes to my billing so I'd be shocked to find out that I went out of my way to select e-billing when I'm always careful to be sure it's mail... But whatever. So after the second bill to my new address was never sent, I called them (nightmare) to verify they will start to mail my bills again. Good as gravy... Nope. They jacked up my rate 2 months later. I called and they said it was because I was previously late on those two bills. Zero incidents, accidents or claims of any kind. But okay, I was 24 so like everything else, I bit the bullet.
Maybe my rate will go down by the time I turn 25, or I'll take one of these 17 companies up on their offers. My Birthday rolls around, and my good friend leaves me a note on my General bill saying "Happy birthday, I paid off the rest of your premium" I was elated! Almost $400 I don't have to worry about for a few months! It was a sweet gesture. Until I got a letter in the mail stating my bill was late and will be cancelled by the next week. Okay. My friend confirms there's money in the account but The General didn't take it out. Oh great, another excuse for them to jack up my rate. So I call. The nice lady said the payment didn't go through and that she could try it again. We verified the account information and give it a try! She said it would post in 2-3 business days. Great! I call a few days later to check on the status. Hopefully, this puppies paid off and no more worries!!!
Nope, the new lady said the previous lady was misinformed so when she ran the payment a second time and it did not go through, I was no longer able to have General Insurance now or ever again. WHAT?! $400 isn't anything for my friend to pay, he had it, I saw it in his account while we tried to figure it out. But because YOUR employee was misinformed, I no longer have any insurance and you won't accept the money in full to pay off your minimal garbage coverage for someone with no accident history?! So she leaves it at "Sorry, have a nice day..." I was so livid yet speechless.
I could have paid the premium or monthly at any point throughout this. Had I of known everything would be terminated if she tried to run the payment, I would have gone a different route. But honestly a blessing in disguise. I made a long time coming switch to Nationwide, got literally triple the coverage for an even smaller premium. Paid off in full! Thank you Nationwide!!! Screw you General... NEVER GET GENERAL INSURANCE!!!

I got car insurance with The General in June 2017. In August 2017 my car was stolen in another city. I called, put in my claim and I spoke with my adjuster one time and was not able to reach her until 4 days later? During that time I had other adjusters helping me. When I finally talked to my adjuster she told me an investigator would be in touch with me to come out and talk with me. So the investigator came out two days later to my home and treated me like a criminal. On the first 48 she kept proceeding to tell me she retired from the police station in the area my car was stolen 15 years ago?? Prior to her coming to my home I was getting a lot of mail from The General that has very big bold letters about fraud and the letter was only a one sentenced letter but the bold fraud print was a few sentences.
I thought it was odd and I felt as if they were trying to say something. Anyhow when the investigator was at my home she record our convo and then it ended and she turned the recorder off when she did she said to me that she did a thorough background check on me and the people that I was involved with at the time and she told me my background had nothing really on it and she said to me "Do you want to lose everything over a few bucks???" How she got to this was because the people who helped me out as far as picking me up and taking me to the police station didn't want any parts in this so I didn't give her correct names of them. Their first names were correct but not last names. However I did give them the right phone numbers to these people. They just didn't want their name involved and I don't know why.
But the sad part is because of that she was saying we were all lying. It freaked me out so bad I just gave up and told her to cancel it out. It was an option she gave me as she was leaving. She was so sarcastic and non caring. She asked where I worked, how long I been there? She wanted my bank account info? And my phone records? I can't get my phone records At all cause it's prepaid and she couldn't get them either? At this time she already calling me a liar??? The way she put it all out there as if I was nothing??? I was so scared because of how she was saying "Oh this person is your ex" and "Oh this use to be his car" and so forth and so on? Then she proceeds to say that I knew the lady who I bought the car from?? And I don't know her at all???! It's just a big mess because they didn't want their name in it.
This lady was so sarcastic and she was more worried about my ex. She also told me while in my house that she tried calling the 2 people who I was with that day and she said she cant get in touch with them but they said she never called or left messages. Anyhow I'm out of 2,500. Damn!!! Hundred dollars and my car is just gone in the wind?? This is the worst thing that can happen to someone... But wait after she was so sarcastic she's leaving my home going down porch steps and say but you always can cancel this case and we are done or proceed on and deal with the consequences??? Then she is outside taking pictures of cars in my driveway. She kept circling the corner smirking and laughing. At this time I gave up and I really think that was her goal.
Now I feel lost and sad. I'm mad at friends who didn't want to be involved and at the same time I was thinking to go on with the case but this lady was so mean I felt that she would of made my case a nightmare cause she has that power. Never go with General. THEY DON'T CARE AT ALL ABOUT ANYTHING. She made me so nervous to the point I couldn't think right. I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE DAY OF LOST OR ANYTHING WHICH MADE HER FEEL SHE GOT OVER ON ME MORE! JUST SAD.

2 years ago my local independently owned Insurance Company merged with The General. My local company had always been great and I like to think of myself as loyal so I stuck with them. Big Mistake. I pay my bill by phone every month. I called to pay my $113 bill on the same day every month and the automated voice said I owed 489. I had never missed or been late for a payment. So I call and they had added my 15 yr/old who just get her learner's permit without my consent. So I explained my daughter has her own car and is insured under her father's insurance. She does not drive my vehicle at all. Never.
I was told by a super young sounding voice I would first have to pay the almost 500 bill and then they would remove her. WHAT??? I would never pay 500 for Insurance ever. I felt scammed by this company. So of course I cancelled immediately and switched to Geico and my bill was actually cheaper each month. He had been overnighting since early December which is when he wrecked his car. Classes also ended in late December.
I provided my lease and its terms which he is not listed on. I provided our school schedule which shows class was 1 day a week for 3 hours. I provided his car info and auto insurance info which lists his living address. I wrote the removal letter denying my consent for him to be added as instructed to have him removed. I called in several times and requested he not be added and if so he be removed. I also sent in a copy of the Colorado State auto insurance regulations. I also contacted the Colorado insurance board. They still added him and insist I pay for him.
They lapsed my insurance and said the only way to reinstate it is to pay for him. They also say that's the only way to remove him. They also sent this all to collections saying I owe them. How do I owe you for something you did without my consent and against state regulations. How do I owe you for something that I provided all proof and documentation of but you rejected trying to be greedy. I will never do business with them again or tell others to. The General is BY FAR the WORST insurance company I have ever experienced in my life. On May 1st 2017, I was hit by a tractor trailer who fled the scene. I had PHOTOS of the vehicle, their license plate number and the name of the company who hit me but The General was convinced I had fabricated the claim and I am still mirrorless on my driver's side, while they "investigate" me for "fraud". I was asked multiple inappropriate questions by the company such as "why do you have two vehicles", "why is your truck so big" and was then told that while they investigate, I should drive my other car because "you have two. Drive your other"...
I traded the second car in for another vehicle and it took them more than a month to put Insurance on it because I had opened my policy two years ago with a Blue Unlimited Wrangler and had just purchased a Black Unlimited Rubicon... which they were convinced was the same Jeep. They didn't even have similar VINs but I was again being investigated because they thought it was the "same" Jeep and I'd been hiding it, uninsured. I've since received a ticket for no Insurance because my company refused to just add a vehicle without having receipts, bills of sale and all the dealership documentation. I've purchased a vehicle every 6 months to a year for 8 years and have never had such a difficult time.
These people are too stupid to function. Save yourself the headache and search, search, search for insurance even if you're "high risk". There are options out there that do not include The General! Today is June 21 and The General has YET to clear up my "fraud" investigation or give me any information. They also, have not followed up about adding my new vehicle to the policy that I have been trying to add for almost a month now. This is insane... Don't waste your time.

That I said, "If I would've got pulled over or couldn't get onto work because I work on a military base then that would been my fault or your fault." He said, "Well you would've had to call us to get it corrected." I said, "So you guys did not know I had no insurance for 16 days." I said, "I did not get a phone call stating that the information I sent was not good enough. You just took my payment and then canceled my insurance." He said, "Ma'am we fix that but you fixed it."
16 days after I had no insurance and when I had to call and question it I had to screenshot a picture of the app stating I have no insurance and emails from three different employees that work there. Never received an email back, so I called again. Different gal, told me the same thing. Second time I emailed over the same letter requesting cancellation. This time I advised I've now purchased new insurance, and need that money back ASAP - as I'd previously been told. I sent the email while still on the phone with her, and she stated she would pass it along to her manager to have processed ASAP. Wonderful. Checked the status of the policy later Friday, no change. Saturday, no change. Monday, pending. Called more than once Monday & was told the cancellation letter was with Underwriting, and once they "get to it", my policy will be cancelled. However, this could take 3 to 5 business days, with 3 to 5 more business days added on top of that to receive my money back.
I've been in tears about this for 2 days now. I assumed I would have my $300+ back at the end of the weekend, possibly Monday. But now on Tuesday, the policy has been processed and is VALID. WHAT?!? WHY!?? I've never in my life heard of it taking weeks to cancel an auto policy, and then have no regard for the fact I need it expedited to receive my money back. I have yet to meet someone that actually would take the time and try to push it through, and maybe help me out themselves. I just keep being told it's with underwriting, and to wait. Not a way to do business, nor treat people. SO glad I went with a different auto insurance right away. I couldn't imagine the headache if you actually had to file a claim, or needed help. They could care less about people.

I am very dissatisfied with The General car insurance. I only had insurance with them for 5 days. When I canceled they kept all of my a hundred and $64 for five days and didn't return anything. Said I was at a zero balance. I think it's unfair. I canceled because they don't even offer roadside assistance, their deductibles are sky-high. Their customer service is really bad. Very dissatisfied overall but not recommend to anyone to get The General. They're very high on their quotes and they are not willing to return your first month insurance when you only used 5 days out of your whole 30 days in a month. Very dissatisfied... I would rate it as 0 if I could.

I have repeatedly sent documentation supporting my very low annual mileage. The General refuses to acknowledge it and adjust the policy accordingly. The scandalous scum buckets increase it rather than lowering it. I have sent copies of repair receipts bearing the odometer reading. I have taken pictures of the odometer as well. The con artists also refuse to correct driver - vehicle assignment claiming that their computer system does that. Bottom lines is that The General creates whatever they want on your policy and refuse to correct it.

However, the worst was I was given a number to contact the general directly. 99% of the agents were either rude or lack valuable information. I called 15 times 1 hour and was never told of this cancellation fee. Another eye-opening situation is the independent agent, who told me both my credit cards declined and a checking account should be used.

Just to come to find out my family member paid $100 on the 16th of January and the money was processed on the 18th of January. So the balance should have said $236 and some change. I called them back reporting the mistake that was made on the same day I made the payment (01/20/2017). The customer service rep goes on to tell me that she sees the mistake and they will refund me my $100 back.
I ask how were they gonna do that. She said (Brittany **) it would be applied to the last card that was used, but it will take 3-5 business days. I asked to speak to her supervisor because of the inconvenience. She said there is nothing they can do because accounting handles all that. I said how sure are you that the money would be refunded back to the right card? Given the fact the previous card was a prepaid gift card that no one had possession of anymore. I was very adamant about it coming back to me.
She said there is no guarantee but that's usually how the process works and there's nothing a supervisor could do different. Which there was because I called back one week later and spoke with Jose ** and he was seeing about getting me a check sent out but accounting had already applied the funds to the card I specifically ask that they NOT send it to. So now I'm out of $100 that I would have never paid if the machine didn't tell me I had to and had the 1st customer service rep got me to a supervisor in the first place.
They could have just sent me out a check if there was no guarantee that the money would be applied back to the right card. No one wants to respond back or give me a $100 credit for the next month. Even the supervisor boss will Not return my calls and today is February 3, 2017. Her name is Courtney ** ext **. They are scam artist and continue to rip people off. I would prefer to not even give them 1 star. I have been insured with the General for almost a year. And this being just "myself" on the policy. I was helping my niece out with a car for graduation and I went online and did a quote over six months ago. This car was probably a $500 car if that!!! It was NOT in either one's name at the time, as we are simply doing a quote! I went online to pay my bill 2 days ago and I see an extraordinary amount of money I owed... So I went onto the via chat and spoke with a gentleman named Clint. He had advised that my niece was added to my policy. I asked, how could that be, I never added her to my policy, I simply went on the website to get a quote. He advised to get back on to my policy online and remove her.
So I go and TRY to do this and it doesn't work. I open up chat again and receive the same guy, Clint. He then told me that I had to pay the full balance on the account before she could be removed off of my policy. I asked him, well why would I have to pay the full balance when I never even had her under my policy? I'm not going to pay the full balance because it's not correct. He said that is what I had to do because I never replied back to them about NOT adding her! I was just getting a quote!!! I didn't hit confirm, I didn't get a confirmation number??? WTF, so I asked him to cancel my insurance if that's the case. He said I don't have to cancel it, it's already canceled!!! Wow talk about customer service and trying to keep your clients!!! Why would I pay for someone else on my policy, when I never gave them the consent to add this person to my policy!!!
I find this illegal and corrupt! I didn't sign, nor get any information about adding her to my policy! So if this is the case, then I guess, I will never ever, do a quote online again! Call me out if I'm wrong, but how could I be financially responsible for doing a QUOTE!!! Remind you, I never added her to my policy!!! I'm pretty smart, or I thought I was when it comes to computers!!! I'm 37 years old and I've been working since I was 17! I am a graduate with some college education, I'm not an idiot!!! I then contacted them and they told me I was marked as a at fault accident then I told them it wasn't my fault and I had the report. They told me to send it in. It took me awhile to get it and I couldn't scan it so I had to find a place to fax it.
It took well over two weeks for them to even get back to me so I called and immediately she said my claim was being processed and my policy rewritten and after that I checked my policy and it showed it was in underwriting which it didn't even hours before. It took them a couple of days then I got only $142 out of over 600 I was owed nor did I see the money for the report or fax I paid for so I contacted them again and they sent me a billing history that was written intentionally to confuse, that doesn't cover the whole time frame and has a bunch of ambiguous fees and its been over two weeks and many contacts later and I've gotten nothing but silence.

Ever since I transferred my insurance with The General from old car to new car I've had nothing but problems. My NYS registration has been suspended numerous times due to The General not doing their job right by not labeling transactions properly. When I switched coverage to new vehicle they canceled my insurance and restarted a new policy on new car. They should've transferred coverage but because they didn't it showed in the DMV system as me having a cancellation. It literally took 3 months to get that fixed, during which time I got pulled over, ticketed for driving on suspended registration, and my car got impounded.
Fast forward to today January 3, 2017. I once again have a suspension notice due to cancellation of insurance. I noticed in November my insurance was canceled even though I paid $300 on my policy which would almost pay it off and not have to worry about paying it for a few months. I called The General where it took the rep 20 mins to finally see I electronically sent a check. Rep says it was never processed and I said, "That is not my responsibility." He finally states I'm all set and covered.
Now today I have the same problem from the same payment issue. They told me they will get back to me in 24 hrs. They called me about an hour later asking if I have anything showing I paid, so I sent them the email confirmation. They said that doesn't prove that my bank paid it out. Hmmm, let's see here, I don't have any bounced checks so either someone took the money or they forgot to cash the check. It's not my responsibility to cash the check for them too. Don't use this insurance, or you'll be sure to have problems.

The check was scanned as fraud and I asked her to reissue another check and she asked why I was cashing the check anyway and that there was nothing she could do. Eventually I did get another check and the bank had to type it in. I did speak to a corporate woman and she was very nice.
I work with the public and if I had her attitude I would have been out the door. I'm trying to figure out how in the world she still employed. This company seems to employ females of color who have serious customer service issues. It is alleged that they only insure the undesirables and I would never consider becoming a customer.

These people are so stupid. I don't know what possessed me to sign up with them. Twice! I get a "Notice With Intent to Cancel" 11 days before my premium is due, and they send me at least three "reminder cancellations" at least three times a month. My premium is due on the 30th of every month and I pay it on the 29th of every month. They cancel it on the 30th, then send me a "reinstatement" on the 1st, like they've done me some huge favor. It's my own fault for staying with them as long as I did, but they are seriously so incompetent, I don't know how they stay afloat. I wouldn't recommend this insurance to Satan himself.

When I read his complaint, it was like I had written it. Now I know I'm not the only person. I'm sure there are many people who are experiencing this treatment from this company. Customer service was horrible! Something has to be done. I have never been treated so poorly from an insurance company. How dare they add someone on to my policy that has nothing to do with me. I told them no one drives my car but me. This is a nightmare!
I started a policy 3 months ago. When I signed up, asked if another drivers in household would be on policy. I stated 'no' and started policy. 3 months later I get my monthly reminder that a payment is due and they add that driver that I stated would not be on policy. Then when I talk to customer service (which is a joke) they claim that they sent a letter that would add said driver if I don't respond. (I am on paperless, so why send a letter?) They ask to prove that said driver is insured (which I can prove) but I feel it was their mistake and should fix it. First, the premium was not low and I had to find out the hard way that even one day late on your premium means they consider it a lapse in coverage and your policy starts all over again. There is no grace period. I dropped them and went with GEICO, who I've been with over a year and if I can't pay the premium on the day it's due, they have a feature online that I can delay my payment up to ten days and it does not fault me in any way. I could probably shop around, but they have been too good to me.

I have faith that State Farm will be helpful and informative if I have to make a claim. I have dealt with them in the past, always satisfactorily. Then when I called them they tell me that there's a policy fee involved and then there's an installation fee that if I didn't pay the bill within the same month I paid them the month's bill then they charged me $8 to send the bill out, again which I liked it paperless but they send the bill out anyway if you don't pay again that same month for the following month. I always thought that THE GENERAL insurance was someone who would be there for me always. NOT. First of all the online application don't give much options to design your coverage. Fine, but when my daughter got her own vehicle, we took her off our insurance because she lives out of state. She made a payment the day before the cancellation date. I told her that we'd shop for other insurance because everytime we call in the customer service sucks. I myself tried to make changes on this particular vehicle but was told that was not possible because my husband would need to call in. Even though my name is also on the policy and the vehicle is in my name too. Talk about caveman ages.
We have screen shots that a refund would be made to us for that payment made. Now it's been over a month, and I have seen the wording "conditional reinstatement" on the insurance document. Something we never asked for. Now today we did the another inquiry and we were told the amounts were charged to a cancellation fee. And there was not anything left over for them to refund. That is baloney. Even the managers I've tried talking to, are no help. They just reiterate what the specialist tell you already. Anything for them to make a quick dollar, and not give you adequate representation or customer service. PLEASE LOOK ELSEWHERE.

I subscribed to a policy on the website, which was not approved because of some reason about other people that may drive my vehicle. I am the only person that drives my car. I spent two hours on the phone with a representative explaining how I just wanted coverage for me. I thought everything was good. They cancelled my policy because apparently no one that works there is capable of understanding that I am the only driver of the vehicle. This is a phone call that should take approximately 2 minutes, but since it is impossible to get a person to understand something this simple, they decided to just cancel me. I had no idea that it could be difficult to say I was the only one driving this car. It should not take 4-5 hours of my time to speak to a person and explain this.
Unfortunately, cheap auto insurance apparently involves hiring employees that don't seem to have any education, care, or any form of intelligence at all. I have not been given any citations, and there is no reason for them to think that someone else is driving my vehicle. How can a company be so inept, is beyond me. Then again, I probably should have known because they apparently use interns and recent 3d grads to make their advertisements. The General, I would like someone to contact me that has just enough sense for me to tell you again that I am the only driver of this car. What is so difficult? You realize by hiring idiots, just because it saves you $2 an hour, doesn't economically make sense, when it takes 2 hours to have someone understand this. I am the ONLY driver of my car. You have people working for you that seem to fail at understanding 8 words.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, even out of desperation. It is absurd that somehow these people have found a way to be worse than Comcast. Is there some contest going on, that I am not aware of? I can't even imagine what it would be like to try to file a claim with them. I can almost guarantee that they would fight tooth and nail, to ensure you are screwed as much as possible. If someone from The General reads this. I am the ONLY person that drives my car. I can't dumb that down a single bit further. If my policy is cancelled, I would like all of my money back. They seem to be competent taking payments, but that is about it.
Use this company only if you require a piece of paper that prevents you from being arrested because you lack insurance. I would also recommend you start praying you never get into an accident or someone else hits you. This is the payday and title loan company of the insurance world. You aren't paying for anything aside from the insurance that you could show police a printed piece of paper insuring you don't go to jail. Thanks The General.

I have been a consumer of auto insurance for 20 years and have been a customer of The General for the past 4 months. In the last 4 months I have received the worst customer service in all my 20 years of paying for auto insurance. I'm truly upset with myself for switching from Progressive, a company I had been a customer of for the past 4 years. The only reason I had switched was to get a lower monthly payment for the same coverage I was getting thru Progressive. I did read the reviews from Consumer Affairs before I made the switch and thought "They can't be all that bad", but I was wrong... Everything people are saying on here is all familiar and similar to my case and true.
The General is great if you plan on making payments for insurance you'll never get to use. The customer service representatives cannot answer any of your questions honestly and try to diffuse the situation every time by stating someone will call you back. It never happens. I was told misinformation regarding my policy not only once but twice during one claim, concerning the same issue. My monthly payment was raised without ever informing me two months after the claim was settled. When I called in daily 3 separate times (because I never got a call back) I was finally told my payment went up because I changed my policy. I never changed my policy... Had The General given me the option to pay a deductible or increase my monthly payment I would have addressed it then, the way I (the customer) preferred.
I'm currently still insured with The General and actively seeking new insurance coverage with a new company. After reading reviews with customers that had issues with accidents and such, I can't imagine what this company would try to get away with if I really needed them. The way they do business and treat their customers is downright scary. Please research all other options before insuring yourself with The General, you really don't get anything you pay for with this company.
