Another burned up Whirlpool refrigerator. Our daughter woke us up early one morning complaining that the house smelled of smoke. It took a while, but we figured out that the fridge was the source of the problem. We unplugged it and called repair. Repairman found the "start device" (device that powers on the compressor) was fried and that the terminals melted off the compressor, the wiring melted and the insulation scorched. The fridge was bought in December of 2003. I called Whirlpool. They claim they have no issues on something like this. I informed them that Maytag has done a recall for this problem and they knew about and were quick to point out that the recall were for refrigerators produced prior to Whirlpool acquiring Maytag.
They were kind enough to offer us a 15% reduction on our next refrigerator if and only if we purchased a Whirlpool, Jenn-Air, Maytag, KitchenAid or Amana. We had a good laugh at that as why would anyone buy a refrigerator from Whirlpool after it fried itself less than 7 years into its life? Repairman bill was $100 just for the visit and the cost of a new (not Whirlpool) refrigerator. There appears to be enough people having this problem, so why can't something be done?

I have had a new Whirlpool refrigerator ED5HVEXVB01 less than 1 year. This morning, I discover it was not cooling in the refrigerator or freezer unit. I was referred to a repairman that contracts to Whirlpool. He determined that the compressor was bad. He said he would have to take it to the shop, order replacement compressor and make repair. It may take up to a week. Whirlpool said tough luck, no assistance on the food loss or anything else. I have other Whirlpool appliances. I won't have any more. This borders on the sham cheat way of doing business!

After just less than 6 and 1/2 years of service, our Whirlpool Refrigerator burned out a relay causing the breaker in the house to trip and damaging the compressor. I called Whirlpool and asked them who they recommended to service the refrigerator. They gave me the name of A&E repair. I called them and they came out. The repairman came out on a Saturday and determined that I needed a new relay and compressor and it would cost $700. He called Whirlpool and their customer service said that there was nothing that they could do, but he gave me a number of someone else within Whirlpool who might help. On Monday, I called Whirlpool and was told that there is nothing that they could do, specifically since I had already had the work done, as if people could wait around for Whirlpool to make a decision or if anyone even knew that that was their policy.
Anyway, when I asked to talk to someone higher up, I got that their system was down and he couldn't connect me to anyone and to try back tomorrow, which I did. The next day, a woman gave me the same answer as the guy the day before, there was nothing that they could do because I already had the work done. She however refused to connect me to anyone else. Next, I emailed Whirlpool directly. They returned my email saying that someone would contact me and they did and I got the same answer. This is a defect in Whirlpools parts. I originally bought this refrigerator because I had an 18-year-old refrigerator and I was afraid that it would go up before a big party. Today, that 6-1/2 year refrigerator went up, but my now 24-year-old Sears refrigerator is still in service, working great. Apparently, the Internet is filled with people with this same problem.

After a year, the small plastic piece holding the pin for the ice dispenser door broke. This happened a week after the warranty expiration. The piece was broken sooner, but finally came off. This is poor quality for something so important. Other than that, the freezer is thawing because the flap is open and cool air is escaping from the unit.

I have all Whirlpool Gold Appliances in my home that were brand new in 2004 when I moved in. One by one, they are breaking down. None of the appliances get a lot of use. My side by side refrigerator lights started making sizzling noises and then burnt out. I cannot put any bulbs in as they continue to sizzle. Now I have a very dark refrigerator with no lighting. The next issue is my over the range/hood microwave that stopped working completely that I had to replace. Next, my Calypso washer is leaking lots of water from underneath the machine. It's probably not worth fixing, I am told. It’s probably cheaper to buy a new one. I have spent a lot of money on my home and appliances. My parents have had appliances that have lasted more than 30 years! It is a shame how the manufacturers are getting away with the price they are charging and the appliances only lasting 2-4 years. That should be against the law. Maybe they should start making disposable appliances, because that's what they are now. I am outraged about Whirlpool not standing behind their products and the complaints I have read.

Whirlpool Model GS6SHAXLL03 Serial number SP1529528 was purchased on June 07, 2003 from HH Greg for $1,943.97. A five year (5) warranty was included in the purchase price. The compressor relay switch tripped our breaker. We had an electrical burnt smell, and puddle of water in front of refrigerator the next day. Our refrigerator broke down. In the process of finding out the problem, we found a recall. On finding this out, we called about the recall. We spoke to someone at Whirlpool instructing us to send the receipt for the part that was fixed and a list of items we lost. I faxed a copy of my credit card statement (which we used to pay for the part) and a list of lost items. Then I received a call stating that the information was incomplete and that nothing would be done. "Your refrigerator is too old." Let me tell you something; the recall states that the refrigerator could have caused a fire, and we could have lost a lot more than just the food in it. We could have lost everything we have and our lives.
I feel, whether it makes a difference or not, the person we talked to should have helped us resolve the problem instead of blowing off in the nastiest way possible. I know the calls are monitored and someone should listen to the call that was made on 5/30/09 to a Mr. Ron **. I would expect a response to this statement but I am sure, as sure as we got taken care of that we will not hear anything back. I just had to get this off my chest. Thank God I still have a chest to get this off of and no fire at my house.

Oh my Lord, now I'm really scared. I've read all the problems with the Whirlpool fridge and the fire stuff is really disturbing. I'm mad because my almost 2-year-old side-by-side is having the ice maker problems - sticking flap on door dispenser causing lots of frost buildup and in general, not working. The repairman just left after a $50 service call to inform me that I needed the repair kit that Whirlpool has apparently had to make for this specific problem. It will cost around $75, plus another service call, plus labor. Around $150. I'm livid. I also have that noisy problem in the water lines to ice maker. I just learned to live with that, but now I'm dejected over the possibility of fire; lots of parts and labor costs; no bailout or even concern from Whirlpool.
Gee, I only want a simple life and a simple fridge like my mom's. It was 40 plus and still going strong when my mother died. Well at least I vented. Thanks. I got to run and see if I can teach my cats to dial 911 if I'm not here when the fridge ignites.

I bought a Whirlpool refrigerator the last week of December and also bought the extended warranty with it. I called Lowe's because it is making a knocking noise. They sent Mr. Bob's appliance repairman out. He came out three or four times and it still makes a loud noise, so we called Whirlpool. They said they had to have a second opinion, so they had us call Hamilton Appliance repairman come out. He has been here four or five times at least. I called last week and asked him to call Whirlpool and find out what we are going to do about this noise. We called Whirlpool again and they said that the repairman would have to call and say they couldn't fix it before they would replace it.
I called Hamilton's this morning to see what was going on with it. I was told Whirlpool told him to order another part. How long is this going to go on? How many parts can they replace on a new ref? I bought a Whirlpool dishwasher and a new stove at the same time. I am not having a problem with them. I feel after this many service call on a new refrigerator that Whirlpool should replace this one. When people come to my house and hear my ref, they think I am crazy for putting up with it. I would like to know what is really going on. Will I have to have a repairman come every week until my extended warranty runs out?

Our complaint is with Whirlpool not Sears. We purchased our Whirlpool refrigerator model # ED5JHAXTLO1, serial #SU4427315 on 10/07 but had them in storage until 4/08. We used the refrigerator for about 6 months then went to Florida for 6 months. We came back in April of '09 and used the fridge until today. The ice dispenser shut off valve apparently is faulty and water went on our hardwood floor. Water on wood no good! We would like a little help in paying for this repair since we think it should not be defective at this early stage in its life expectancy. We realize the warranty is over but we thought Whirlpool would help. We really like the refrigerator. It is the best one we have ever owned and we have owned a few in 56 years. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Our side-by-side 2007 Whirlpool refrigerator (ED2PHEXMQ00) began to smoke and smelled of an electrical fire. Luckily, we were home to unplug it before our family, animals & house burnt down. We purchased the refrigerator from Lowe's and also an extended warranty. We have an extended warranty which expires this July and we were given the runaround for 4 different phone calls. We were given a contractor's name and number who was supposed to arrive sometime in the next 2 days, even though we were considered an emergency. When I called the contractor that Whirlpool set up for us directly, they told us that there was no way that they were going to come out and that Whirlpool/Lowe's extended warranties schedule appointments all the time without getting a confirmation of service. We ended up having to find our own repairman and getting it fixed ourselves. The electric relay switch caught on fire and was replaced. I have been researching on the internet and notice there are an abundance of complaints about Whirlpool's refrigerators. Why isn't there a recall on them?!

Our Whirlpool bottom-mount refrigerator, with model number GX5SHDXTQ00, has never worked properly. The refrigerator temperature fluctuates from 30 degrees to 45 degrees. In the beginning, I turned the digital settings from 4 to 5 and then stayed with 6 (the highest setting). I have used three different thermometer gauges which all concur that there is a major problem with this appliance. The repairman has made 4 trips in the past 2 months, replacing the motherboard and the digital control. His last advice was to keep the freezer and refrigerator at the highest levels and see if that would fix it. I still have the same problem. I have had the unit for 14 months. I am afraid the highest settings are not going to hold for long. Then what? My older "Frigidaire" never fluctuated the entire time we owned it. They have offered to "patch" the wall, but as the repairman stated, it would not look very professional and he didn't believe I would want that in our home. Calling customer service has shown that they will only send a repairman out at my cost for the visit and any repairs. This problem is clearly one of defective design/materials. After our Whirlpool Gold side-by-side fridge lost lighting and digital display, we did the following. The light bulb was okay. The freezer side was working and lit up. I decided to quickly call Whirlpool considering the fridge is 2 1/2 years old and works good. I must be lucky. The Whirlpool rep wanted to send out a tech after having me jump through hoops. I told her I'd call her back. I scoured the internet looking to see if anybody else had the same problem. Some of you do/did. It seems no one gets anything fixed correctly through Whirlpool so I decided to call my home warranty company.
Apparently, my appliances weren't covered but could be for $145. Spitting into the air, I bought the warranty for all my appliances. Then I waited 5 hours and called back to ironically put in a claim for my fridge. A day and a half later, BuyRite Appliance came out at 8 a.m., took off the bottom cover, snapped off the white door, unplugged the fridge and pulled out the circuit board. James unplugged the wires and showed me where the short had occurred. He put in another circuit board, plugged everything in and everything worked. I asked him his opinion on appliances and he too owns Whirlpool. I ran some others by him and he said that the parts are cheap and readily available.
I paid my $50 deductible and asked him how much it would have cost me without using my home warranty. He said somewhere in the range of $175 for parts and labor plus now, I have coverage for all my appliances for the next year having spent $25 for the repair. Best luck to all of you with Whirlpools. I wonder where they're all made. Also make sure you vacuum out the underside of the front of the fridge on the coils. Open both doors and pull off the grill and vacuum. Mine was full of English Springer Spaniel dog hair.

The Whirlpool refrigerator product is one of the worst designs I have encountered. The drain tube continually freezes and water pooling occurs. We had the defrost sensor replaced for a total of $215 after 2 years of use. This fix lasted for about two months and the same problem occurred again. This refrigerator cost $900 new. I went to Lowes and Whirlpool, and they absolutely refuse to do anything about it. After reviewing other complaints about this product, it is apparent that there are serious design flaws, and Whirlpool should offer cash refunds. I don't think anyone would want a replacement product! I have heard from technicians that these refrigerators have a life span of 3-5 years. That is outrageous! Most refrigerators last at least ten years, and I have heard of some lasting twenty five years. I must now manually defrost every 2-3 months. Initial cost was $900, repairs cost $215, and food costs $400.

Starting to sense a trend here. We purchased a Whirlpool side by side (Model # ED5HG) from Best Buy in August of 2003. A couple of days ago, I awoke at 2:00 AM smelling something electrical burning. I went down to the kitchen and the smell was intense. There was also a haze hovering near the ceiling of the kitchen. I checked everything electrical in the vicinity of the kitchen. (However, I didn't check the refrigerator. I never expected that to be the problem.) I then called the fire department as I surmised I had an electrical fire that was either occuring between the floors or in the walls. Meanwhile, my wife is getting our two young children up in order to vacate the house.
Just after I called, I heard some odd noises coming from the refrigerator. The sound was similar to that of a welder welding iron. I then knew the fridge was the problem. I pulled the it away from the wall and unplugged it. The fire department arrived and verified the problem. A relay attached to the compressor had failed, melted, and fused the electircal prongs of the compressor together. I shudder to think what would have happened had we not been home. Because of the intense smell, the fire department also ventilated the house. A week later, we can still smell the problem and have two kids who are afraid of going to sleep.
We purchased a new refrigerator the next day and had it delivered. I was going to have the delivery company take away the damaged refrigerator, but the delivery person said that I should keep it and call Whirlpool. I took his advice and called. Whirlpool had a technician there in less than 24 hours. I asked the technician if what he saw surprised him, and he said No! The technicians must know something about Whirlpool's inferior quality that the average consumer doesn't. Even though the refrigerator was just out of warranty, Whirlpool covered all the costs. The bill was in excess of $650.00. However, my wife does not want the old fridge back in the house. Anyone interested in purchasing a used Whirlpool?

Around October of 03 we purchased a new side by side Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer with water filtration and in the door ice and water. On Jan 5 2006 our ice maker stopped working and we spent $255.00 to replace the motor and ice maker. On March 4 2008 our ice maker again stopped working. I called Whirlpool. They offered us a discount on a new refrigerator. We spent 298.11 on the replacement of the ice maker and motor and spent 141.30 on new water lines and a new valve in the basement to improve water flow to the ice maker to prevent further problems. The original valve and water line came with the refrigerator.
On Sept 8 2008 we had a technician again come to the house because the ice maker was again not working. The recommended fixes will cost 220.15. Whirlpool is willing to pay for the cost of one of the parts. The repair company is actually going to replace one of the parts as a defective new part since it went bad so quickly. Currently we have been advised to replace the module and the fill valve.

The Whirlpool refrigerator is less than 2 years old. The whirlpool ice make freezes ice cube on top of ice maker; the cubes do not tilt off the maker. Whirlpool customer service said that no where on the internet does Whirlpool give instructions on removal of the end cap which would enable the customer to determine if the whole unit needs to be replaced. Whirlpool also said that it even does ptovide any help to authorized repair men to access any help on the ineternet.
Whirlpool misrepresents, in my opinion, help it gives to the customer before the customer has to to bug a pig in a poke when something goes wrong.

I just bought a brand new broken refrigerator on July 21, 2008. I tried contacting the dealer, and they said to deal with Whirlpool itself. The dealer tried to shift the blame on me and said that it was my fault that the refrigerator was broken. I called Whirlpool many times to rectify the problem. The company said that there was nothing they could do except send a repair man. Whirlpool said that they will not take back this refrigerator even though I had just bought it.
The first guy just came into the house looked at the refrigerator and cut a line. He left immediately cutting the line without any explanation. I ran after him to find out what was wrong. The repair man said that he would have to order a part and it will not come in for a couple of weeks. A second repair person came with an attitude. The person did not want to hear the problem and did not care about my situation. Plus both times they ordered a part, the wrong part came in.
The third repair man came and he was able to fix the problem in two visits. Plus he found an additional problem. The water line inside the left door was damaged. I did not expect to wait for six weeks before I can get a working refrigerator. I kept calling about the wrong part and nobody seemed to understand or really care. The third repair man said that Whirlpool made a mistake with the part numbers and that was why the wrong part kept coming to my house.
During the whole six weeks, Whirlpool denied any faults and would not help me in getting a working refrigerator while this one was being fixed. It amazes me that I could buy a new refrigerator with so many problems and get so little help. I chose to buy a Whirlpool product which is an American well known brand name. And sadly enough, I still got treated like I had bought a foreign name brand. I told Whirlpool I could have bought another name brand, their response was that it was my choice. During this whole ordeal, nobody took responsibility for the refrigerator and they kept shifting the blame. Several family members and friends know of my ordeal with Whirlpool, they said that they are guaranteed not to buy Whirlpool products because of their poor customer service.
I had to spend a lot of money on groceries because I had no refrigerator. All my food kept spoiling and I had to eat out a lot. I cannot believe that I spent $1000 on a refrigerator and I still had to spend more money because of it.

Purchased a Whirlpool top freezer refrigerator, model ER2CHMXPB04 with no internal water filter...just your basic refrigerator with ice maker. It was delivered 7/2/08. After throwing away several batches of ice, the ice still tasted and smelled like chemical. It was totally disgusting. I called Lowes and they took me through the paces of whether I had thrown out the first batches of ice, etc., which I had. They gave me the Whirlpool repair number which I called and scheduled a repair visit.
The repair visit rendered no conclusion as to why the ice tasted so bad. The repairman suggested an external water filter, which in some ways didn't make sense because that would be going under the assumption the water source in our house was bad. I knew it wasn't because we had previously had an icemaker with no bad taste. However, that was his only suggestion. He didn't have the filter with him so he said he'd be back on another day with the filter. In the meantime the refrigerator didn't seem to be cooling properly. I put a regular themometer in the fresh food area and it was reading 50 degrees.
A couple of days later, after I called with the second complaint, the repairman came back and installed the water filter, checked the temperature inside the refrigerator and at that time it seemed to be doing fairly well. I had it turned up as far as it would go, which I didn't think was necessary for a brand new refrigerator. However, my main concern was the ice. The ice never got any better because it became apparent there was something wrong INSIDE the freezer/icemaker that was producing foul tasting and smelling ice. I had now had the refrigerator almost 2 weeks.
To their credit the Lowe's person I spoke with after all this stated they would replace the refrigerator completely. The next Monday they brought a brand new refrigerator, same model. The ice from the beginning has been perfect, which shows me that other refrigerator had a definite problem. After a couple of weeks though the refrigerator wasn't cooling properly just like the other one. Another call to the Whirlpool repair office. They sent a different repairman this time and when he did the troubleshooting necessary, he knew exactly what the problem was. It needed a condenser fan motor. Since he didn't have the motor on the truck and had to order, it was going to take a few days.
After a few days and another phone call from me asking about the fan, the repairman came and had the fan motor installed in minutes. The cooling temp in the refrigerator has been perfect ever since and it's set at #3, where it needs to be. No more problems. I commend Lowes for replacing the refrigerator as soon as they did and that impressed me. I was frustrated, however, with the problems both refrigerators had so I'm giving this testimony to let others know they could have trouble with this particular model. Buyer beware.

We purchased a Whirlpool side by side stainless refrigerator model ED5JHAXZML from HH Gregg in 5/04. Luckily we purchased an extended warranty. In July we had ice forming along the entire wall of the refrigerator next to the freezer. The technician found that too much air was coming in to the crispers so he restricted the flow. Unfortunately I cracked 2 crisper drawers that were frozen to the wall but those weren't covered by the warranty. Then, the refrigerator stopped working 8/04.
We called the warranty company but it was a weekend. We lost all of our food that time. The technician worked on it for an hour and a half. He said he was stumped but then he jiggled something and it started working. He wrote that the plug was loose on the repair ticket. That was nothing but a lie. We had plugged, unplugged and tried different outlets and so did he when he first got there. Can you imagine a repairman taking 90 minutes to find a loose plug?
9/24/04 the same thing happened we had a puddle on the floor when we woke up from all of the ice melting. They replaced both relay boards and I lost all my food again. Two times I had food loss with a 4 month old refrigerator! After that repair we would notice that every now and then the refrigerator seemed quiet like it wasn't running. I bought a thermometer and noticed that the temperature would rise and fall about 12 degrees at the same setting. We started changing the settings and either had ice cold milk or milk that was not very cold milk. It stopped working again on 6/15/05. I turned the settings up to top range. I noticed this about 11 pm but by morning it had started working again. The same thing happened on 11/22/05. It stopped working at 4 pm and kicked in at 11:54 pm. I reported this to Whirlpool and got a bunch of chatter but nothing else. It happened again and we lost all of our food 8/06, 9/06, 11/06 and 4/07. They replaced the control box two more times, cleaned coils, did all kinds of testing again and again did something to the crisper because the ice was still coming and going (to a lesser degree than it did the first time).
Then 9/19/06 it did it again. It worked better after that until 12/07 when the ice maker stopped working. That was replaced. Then, 1/08 the ice maker stopped working again and they replaced the same part once again. I do know that this refrigerator is a total LEMON. It has never worked properly. The only thing worse than the Whirlpool refrigerator is their Customer Service, Executives and Warranty people. They really could care less that I have lost I'm sure $1,500 or more in food. They said if the same problem occurs more than three times they replace the appliance. I told them that the same problem has occurred more than 3 times -- the unit quits working and I lose all my food. They said that the same part needs to be replaced more than 3 times. And, they don't count the times that the unit quit functioning in the original warranty period and the extended warranty. It has to be the same problem 4 times in the same warranty period.
I wrote letters to all of the Whirlpool bigwigs detailing this horrendous appliance and the unsatisfactory performance I've had with it. Not one of them responded. I requested reimbursement for food loss as the warranty says they will provide and although someone named Garrett told me it was approved the money never came. And, then a Supervisor Elsa said she would check into it and never called or wrote me with her findings. I don't know if these people are paid based on what they have to pay out and that's why they are so difficult to deal with or if they're just lazy and/or incompetent.
The fact that none of the 10 people I wrote to that included the HR head, Global Strategic Sourcing, Ceo, General Counsel, VP, President, Executive VP, CFO, Executive VP Technology, President, Executive VP Market Operations ever returned a response to my letters tells me that incompetence reigns supreme in the Whirlpool organization. Customer service is absent. I bought my Whirlpool refrigerator because my previous refrigerator was a Whirlpool and I have a 19 year old wall oven/microwave that have never had problems. I could understand that once in a while a company manufactures a defective product. I just don't understand why they don't own up to it and rectify the problem.
Loss of $1,500 TO $2,000 in spoiled food. Health concerns for my family with the irregularities of the temperature regulation of this appliance. Loss of time from work while I wait for appliance repair people to show up. One dinner party at my house with ice chests with food in them because the refrigerator wasn't working.

We purchased a Whirlpool Gold Conquest Model gs6shexnl00 ser.no.4941921 in 12/04 and had problems with it in early '06, one or two months past the one year warranty. We did not purchase any extended warranties, our mistake in this case. We also purchased a matching over the stove microwave, same gold series, both stainless. The problem with the micro is simple, the light stays on until you lean into the door extra to completely close it.
The refrigerator on the other hand was not as simple. The fan started making noise. The strip on the front where the doors meet get as hot as an iron to the touch. Then the lights(two) went out on the refrigerator side, but not the freezer side. Knew that more than one light meant it wasn't the bulb, but tried replacing them anyway to no avail. Noticed the LEDs on the temp control were out too.
Had a local man come and look, he WD 40ed the fan and that took care of the noise. He attempted to fix the LEDs,no success, told us the cooling was still working, and it still is today, but we are researching brands, as it could fail any time. We also had him out because the door on the ice delivery had snapped loose. It either had a broken piece of plastic on the bar that holds the closing spring, or he broke it investigating, but I watched him disassemble it. He ordered the enclosure with the ice maker, but it turned out to be just the frame that arrived. Investigating this he said that the enclosure, it turns out, is foamed into the door, to fix it he would have to replace the entire door. We opted out of that. I took it apart, epoxied the plastic piece in place and replaced the door, it is working for now.
Our out of pocket at this point is minimal. Our Aggrevation cost is astronomical.

I am complaining on behalf of my elderly grandmother who does not have internet access. In May 2008, she purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator from a retailer in Monroe, LA, including an extended warranty. The refrigerator was loaded directly onto a moving van and moved to another state where she currently resides. Upon installing the refrigerator, we discovered that it did not cool to a safe temperature. I called the retailer who referred me to Whirlpool. After calling Whirlpool, I was told they would call me back and tell me the name of someone who would service the refrigerator.
Several weeks passed and Whirlpool did not call back. I called again and was told that my grandmother lived too far from a major city for Whirlpool to service the appliance. She is in a small town, only 45 miles from a large city of at least 70,000 people. I demanded to speak with a supervisor saying that the product was under warranty and I would not be taking no for an answer. The next person told me that they would find someone to fix it. After another week, I was told they were still searching for someone to fix it.
I repeatedly called Whirlpool and was told that the file had been passed to different people to locate a servicer in the area. Finally, they contracted a local appliance store to fix the refrigerator. The refrigerator was serviced but still will not cool to a safe temperature and now is leaking. Another call to the local servicer brought them back out and thier reply was we don't know what's wrong so we can't fix it.
Whirlpool has now offered to fix the refrigerator and give her a loaner in the interim but will not give a definite timeframe for the repair or loaner. She cannot sit around and wait for them to show up and should not be expected to. From May-August, she has been replacing cold food-items because they spoil quickly at a temperature that is too warm.

I've always been happy with Whirlpool prodcuts but I bought a refrigerator a few years ago and have had nothing but problems with it. We've already replaced an ice maker part (originally they sent wrong part even though I described it in detail). It was VERY expensive for a chunk of plastic. Now the bucket (also plastic of course) has a crack and everything is freezing over. I imagine that would be quite expensive so haven't called about the part yet, have just been chipping away the ice. The refrigerator part seems to either freeze stuff or not keep it cold enough.
This is the all-time worst Whirlpool product I've ever had and don't know if I'd buy another. A lot of money being spent on something that was expensive to begin with.

This time the tech replaced a so called faulty power board. He said that Whirlpool recognized there was an issue with these refrigerators power supplies shorting the main panel. He replaced it again.
One day after this repair, the l.e.d. for cube ice dispenser goes out. I called Whirlpool again and told them I want a new refrigerator. The service person came out and said there was nothing wrong with the operation of the ice maker itself but it was a poor design by Whirlpool by putting the ice bucket in the door. Every time the freezer door is opened warm air hits the ice and it melts thus causing one big block of ice in the bucket.
There is nothing I can do about this and Whirlpool says they won't pay for the service charge of $75 because it's not defective. It is a defective design for the ice bucket to be in the door. I purchased a Whirlpool refrigerator of single door with 310 ltr. capacity from a local dealer in December, 1996. The fridge was nice till 6-8 months, but then after a problem regarding it's door started. The PVC strips attached on top and bottom of door starts cracking from the pivot through which door swing-open or close. Then if the immediate care is not taken, the door liners starts delocating due to improper closing of the door and cooling of the fridge affects. Since, it was in warranty at that time, I get the things repaired or replaced. But after every 18-20 months, this repeats.
The company personnel orally admitted that this was a defective design and hence the model has been withdrawn and no longer available in the market.
Recently, on 2nd April, 2008, when I complained for the same to the toll-free call cantre, a local service personnel came and attended. He charged me Rs. 225/- for his visit and gave me a solution to replace the door-liners and pair of top-bottom door strips with an estimate of expenses which also includes body work and transportation to and from service centre to my home. In a couple of days I decided to go for it and informed the person likewise.
He gave me a tentative time of pick-up and returning time of the refrigerator. I waited for him to pick-up but he didn't came on scheduled day. So, I made a reminder call on which he informed me that he was running out of the stocks of that model's door-strip that matches with the colour of the refrigerator and asked me to wait till it comes from the company stores.
I further waited for 10 more days and called him back. The reply was same this time, too. So, I asked his suggestion whether to lodge the complain on the country site of the company. On his recommendation, I did the same. But there was no acknowledgement from the company. In the mean time, the problem is worsened.
Today, on 07th May, when I again contacted the call-centre, the lady attending me informed that my previous complain was closed. She asked me to pay a visit charge again and then only the unsolved complain would be taken care of. This is ridiculous on the part of the company. I am fed-up with the product and reoccurance of this problem which not only affects me in my daily usage but also affects me financially. Please guide.
The problem has costed me more than Rs. 7,000 for repairs and replacement till today. Moreover, when the problem starts, the cooling gets down and hence it starts consuming more electricity. Though, the food-stuff, vegetables and other edibles gets spoiled or looses its nurishing values. These all leads to mental stress also. These all losses cannot be analysed in monetory terms, but has affected me and my family a lot.

In the night of March 7 and 8, 2008 the compressor in my 4 year old Whirlpool refrigerator failed. I reported it the next morning. A service call was scheduled for two days later. The service tech never showed up, but called to informally reschedule. As we talked, I told him the compressor had failed and he verified the symptoms and said he'd order one. I was surprised he didn't have one on the truck. Houston is the fourth largest city in the US, and for a major manufacturer to not have warranty repair parts shows a disregard for the customer.
He turned in a request for another appointment, which was set for eight days later, since transit time for the part would be that long. The part was delivered an hour after the service tech said he had to reschedule, since it might take three hours and he got off at 4:30, and would work no later. (Strangely, service calls are scheduled as late as 6:00). My family has been without a refrigerator for nine days and counting, with the outage certain to be at least eleven days. My wife pointed out that this is the first warranty failure we've experienced on an appliance (we've been married 25 years) and we've owned, by the count of manuals in the filing cabinet, six new Whirlpools of various sorts. I fix out of warranty failures, so this was my first chance to examine Whirlpool's level of commitment to service. While the quality of their products has been good, the warranty service is bad enough that I will never buy another.

Spring 2005 I purchased a Whirlpool side-by-side counter depth stainless steel refrigerator with ice-maker in door. It claimed it was an Energy-star product. Just after the initial 1 year warranty expired so did most of the freezer's capabilities. The freezer started running almost non-stop and the display showed increasing temperatures, up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, the freezer was so cold that it would cause the thermometer we bought to stick at below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. At the same time the freezing temperatures were causing the drip pan in the back panel to freeze over and water would first puddle to the bottom of our refrigerator, and then slowly leak out onto our floors.
I looked on-line for possible reasons for this to be happening and noted many users were having problems with new Whirlpool refrigerators. I then called Whirlpool. They immediately told me whatever was wrong was probably not under warranty. I informed them that they did have a 2-5 year extended warranty for limited internal parts and they could not just summarily dismiss the problems I was having. They then told me it may just be a problem with the gasket and sealing. I told them I had read about that problem from others on Consumer Reports and assured them it was not my gasket. So they arranged to have a certified technician sent to look at the refrigerator while reminding us we would have to foot the bill if there were no problems covered by warranty.
The first technician came and told us that the problems were caused by the iced over drip pan. We attempted to explain that would not influence the displays and that the reason it is icing over is that our freezer thinks it is at 50 degrees Fahrenheit, even though it is less than -20 degrees, and is working as hard as it can to cool itself. When we asked if it was right for our refrigerator to turn ice-cream into a block that couldn't be hacked into for 30 minutes, he said sometimes you just have to put the ice cream in the microwave for 20 seconds or so! After not getting any help from him and obviously having continued problems the company sent another technician.
He also didn't know what the problem was but noted it seemed that there were multiple things going on. We were told we needed additional parts. A month and a half later we call again. In that time we had to melt the ice in the drip pan and scrape ice out of the bottom of the freezer no less than once a week. We finally get a technician to come again but now he stays for 2 hours, calls Whirlpool 2 times, attempts to change one part (which did not work), and tells us we need a new control board and several other components. He then left and COMPLETELY broke our freezer AND the refrigerator which now no longer works. Whirlpool apparently doesn't care about the problems and our Energystar appliance, which has cost us hundreds of extra dollars in operating costs is now just a shiny toy in our kitchen with no working parts. That is all on a refrigerator that is less than 2 years old now.
We have spent hundreds of extra dollars in operating costs. Have currently spent 60 dollars in fees to maintenance (NOTHING has been fixed) and have NO refrigerator or freezer use.

The repairman (an independent) charged me $235 to replace the icemaker.
