We bought a SunSetter and because we live in New England we only use it from May to mid-October. The other 6 months it's wrapped up and protected from the elements. After a few years we noticed that the seams were separating and we called our local dealer. After inspecting the awning he concluded this was a manufacturer's defect and he called the main office. Much to my surprise, the manager on the other end of the phone admitted that our awning was one of a group that was made with defects. I immediately thought... good for them. They admitted it was defective and they'd make it right. WRONG.
I spoke to one very nice girl who agreed with me that I should get a new awning but a few days later her manager (the coward), made her call me back and say sorry, no, I could buy a new awning at a discounted rate and pay to have it installed. Apparently one of their issues was that my awning was 6 month out of "warranty." If they admitted that it was defective when it came out of the factory, why would that be a factor? I finally got to talk to a "manager" who gave me two different prices to replace it and I thought, why should I reward them for selling me a product that they ADMITTED was defective when they sold it to me. I will not use them again nor could I ever recommend them as they have no sense of the importance of being customer focused. I would have been willing to pay for installation but buy another awning when they sold me a defective one in the first place? I don't think so.

We just installed a new 12 ft. Easyshade. The shade is on the roller crooked. Now we will have to spend a few hours to take down the unit, take it apart, and reinstall the shade. SunSetter has provided a detailed pdf to do this. The option was to return it to SunSetter and wait for a new one to arrive. Suggestion: As soon as you get your Easyshade, pull it out of the tube and look at the shade on the roller. If one end has a spiral of small overlaps and the other does not, it will not roll down level and plumb. If yours is like this, stop right there. Call SunSetter, and arrange for them to send you the return shipping paperwork and send you a new unit. This problem should never get by quality control at the factory.

While Sunsetter has a good product, they have THE worst customer service I have ever experienced. Be forewarned that should anything go wrong with your order, you will have no recourse. I ordered two solar powered window shades from Sunsetter on April 23, 2016 and promptly received a confirmation that my order would be delivered in 2-3 weeks. It is now July 20, 2016, 3 months later and they still have not been delivered. Sunsetter has sent the shades three times and three times, UPS has lost the shades. Each time the shades were lost, I had to wait five days until they confirmed that the shades were really lost and then start the 2-3 week wait again. It is impossible to speak with anyone at Sunsetter beyond the clerk who answers the customer service line and only has pre-written scripts to tell me how sorry they are that I am being inconvenienced.
For the past three days, I have tried to get someone's attention to this matter and have been promised that I would receive a callback multiple times and no one follows up. One would think that management would care that the same shipment has been lost several times and that, as a result, they have a very unhappy customer, but evidently they do not. I had also purchased an awning from Sunsetter last year that was also lost by UPS before it was delivered at 5 weeks. I will not purchase from them again and will strongly recommend that no one else does as well.
Our sincere apologies for your experience with us and UPS Freight. We have reached out to you privately and are working towards a resolution.

The only concern I have is the loud bang against the house when it retracts just before putting it down. Otherwise, I am very pleased. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to offer a review of your awning. I’m sure we can help you with the banging noise you are experiencing when your awning closes. It sounds like the close stop on your awning needs to be adjusted or set. This setting tells the awning when to stop. It's an easy adjustment that can done using your remote control. We are happy to walk you through it over the phone or if you prefer you can follow the instructions in Appendix A in your Owner’s Manual.

I was very pleased with the Awning and the LED lighting package. It was installed without much trouble (did have to return the LED controller, but that was quickly rectified and works fine now). After a month or so of use, there are no defects and it has withstood a thunderstorm. In all I would recommend this product for anyone who wants an awning.

We recently had a Sunsetter awning installed over our patio. SunSetter Awnings are based out of MA. They subcontract out the installation. In this case it was Gutter Glove based in the Milwaukee, Wi. area. Gutter Glove came out and took out order, 5 weeks later awning arrives. Tried to call Gutter Glove (the installer) several times and left messages to set up installation day. 3 days later they called me back, set up install 5 days later. Workers came to install awning. This was a roof mount so it needed roof mount brackets. Brackets get installed by bolting thru the shingles to the top of the rafters. Workers did not shim or level brackets causing the awning to bind when deployed. Workers temp fix was to place a block of wood under one end to level swing. This awning came with an additional LED light package which did not work. Had to order new part.
Back to the bracket, installer said they would order an additional bracket to replace the block of wood. Three weeks gone by no bracket, lights still not working. Called Gutter Glove to get an update, several times no call back. Finally get in touch with guy who took my money, he told me, "I know you are unhappy but I can't drop everything and make others unhappy." Told him I was going to call SunSetter. He said, "Do what you gotta do man." Called SunSetter, talked to customer rep. Was told there is nothing they can do but not to renew their services next year. NEXT YEAR! Sunsetter said I could get another sub-contracted to finish the job, but I would have to pay for it. I just want what I paid for that's all. Family and neighbors like the awning but I would not recommend it if this is the kind of customer service one would get after paying out $4000.
We are sorry to hear of your experience with your local awning dealer. We will reach out to you privately to offer our assistance. One point of clarification, SunSetter does not subcontract installation services; we do not offer installation. We sell factory direct to the do-it-yourself homeowner for self-installation. We also have a network of awning dealers that purchase awnings from us for resale to their customers.

Received damaged awning from SunSetter as it wants to pops out of the center bracket. SunSetter is replacing center rod as they say it's a home project and I can repair the awning or must pay for having it installed because it is labeled as a home project. Pretty lame. I bought a twenty footer and the tubes the awning was in did not protect my awning. They came bent and the tube it was sent in was broken. They need to look into finding a better to ship their product and have techs that can come out without charge as the awning is under warranty.
We are very sorry to hear of the transit damage to your awning. We will reach out to you privately and arrange to ship you a new awning.

Overall, my wife and I are very satisfied with our SunSetter. It provides much-needed shade to our patio and home interior here in South Carolina. The quality & construction is top-notch and it was easy to install. I can't give it a five star rating due to two reasons: the awning was tagged at the wrong end before inserting into the roller track causing the awning to be upside down; also, there were several fasteners missing for the cover. There were only enough fasteners for a ten foot awning, not seventeen feet. (SunSetter sent us the fasteners free of charge.) All is well otherwise. A note to be aware of: we have the manual version which is difficult for my wife to raise & lower due to the weight (cranking in & out is fine). I can handle it with ease, but she struggles. The motorized version would have eliminated that problem... live & learn.

I purchased a 15 ft motorized awning this past summer. The awning works very well. I was unsure about purchasing an awning online. The fact that the price was very good and that I could return it to Costco made it an easier choice. Since I have installed the awning I am very pleased with its function and the quality of its structure. I would highly recommend this awning to anyone.

We recently replaced our 18 year old Sunsetter awning with... the exact same Sunsetter awning. Well, not exactly the same. The new awning, although it looks almost the same, it is much improved over the old version. I was truly amazed at the engineering improvements. It is so much easier to raise and lower now, all the accessory holes were pre-drilled which greatly sped up installation, and the side rails lockout using just one finger. We love our Sunsetter awning and consider it a great improvement to our home and deck.

I cannot tell you enough how much I love my awning. It looks great and works well. I have been singing its praises since it was installed. Everyone who has seen is also impressed. I opted for the motorized version and am glad I did. I had to crank it closed when the power had gone out. I realized then that I am cranky but not a cranker. Cranking took some time and wasn't that easy. Also, the lights that were included would fit a larger awning, so I am unable to use them. However, I may be able to use them elsewhere. All in all, I am very pleased and have made my neighbors jealous. A great product.

Upon a 2nd phone call to Sunsetter, they offered to replace the unit as a whole. They initially only offered to replace the motor and that we would be required to do the repair ourselves, which would have been very difficult. After a 2nd call, Sunsetter has been very accommodating and has been very good in getting responses to us quickly. They have since been very accommodating in arranging replacement of the defective awning and motor.
The awning itself looks very nice and appears very sturdy. Takes a long time to crank it in or out by hand, so hope the replacement unit has a better motor, which I'm sure it will. thanks

Thank you for understanding and reviewing our complaint, you have been fair and we appreciate it. We have been told that the seams are now done differently, as we stated the fabric is fine and shows no wear, we can just see where the stitches were not doubled or overlapped and came undone in several areas, not all the way down yet. If you know of a local person that might be able to reinforce the seams we would be able to have the old one repaired. Again thanks so much for helping resolve the issue.

After purchasing the awning in 2010 we noticed in 2015 that they found trim on the valance had frayed. We notifying the company of the problem. It was going to be an extra cost ($90 plus shipping) to have the valance replaced therefore we chose to take it down and have it locally sew it. We were informed not to keep it up all year long. Nothing in the instructions gave us this information.
Now it 2016, and again poor quality workmanship. We noticed that the seams were coming apart where they were sewing together in panels, where the Thread had just deteriorated. Once again we notified SunSetter and found out the replacement cost will be $529. As for the fabric itself it is a quality fabric but the workmanship of where it's sewn together needs improvement.
Thank you for the opportunity to make it right for you. The issue you described with the thread used in the woven acrylic fabric in the Awning you purchased in 2009 is unusual. We update processes and technology each year; seams are now laser sealed which allowed us to improve the strength of the fabric. If you would like to reuse your existing fabric, we recommend contacting a local boating shop or tailor that has worked with outdoor or marine fabric and is able to use the appropriate thread.

We are writing to inform you that due to an unexpected late delivery from one of our suppliers, your order has been delayed." Please read your entire message, because some time during the week of May 2nd I received two tubes and a box of hardware. I had contacted a contractor (Frank **) to get the awning up. He was just about through when he discovered there was no center brace. This was not what I ordered. Then I get the above mentioned email. So I am thinking - "Okay, they made a mistake and are going to make it right" - WRONG!
May 22nd another email saying this model discontinued, but orders were being honored (?) and I would receive my order (see your emails). Then I get another email saying this model was discontinued a year ago. This was not the case in April when I placed my order based on your online ads. Mr. ** (my installer) is also a neighbor and has followed every step and conversation I have had with your company. He too was going to install an awning on his new deck, but has decided to go another direction after seeing what I went through. .
We regret any confusion and inconvenience that you may have experienced. While the optional Center Brace was discontinued from our product line and no longer available on our website as of this past spring, we do offer the Rainaway Arches which provide many the same benefits as the Center Brace with additional features. Other than a horrible experience with UPS and a damaged power cord (I fixed by installing a new plug $7 cost) we are happy, so far so good.

Our awning came in a big fat 21' tube. Unboxing it was entertaining. After reading the manual all the way through I felt like the installation would be easy. It took about 3 hours to install the brackets onto the house. HINT: Spend the extra time to make sure they are all aligned properly. The next day four of us lifted it up some ladders and into the brackets. Plugged it in. Hit the open button and it worked just like we thought it would. Nothing hard other than the weight of the 20' awning.
After a few days we noticed that one side of the opened awning was lower than the other. The included allen wrench made the adjustment fairly easy. I used a level to be sure it was level, and that was it. We have had it about a month. It goes out every morning to keep the sun off and then in after the sun has gone over the house. A few times we ran it out to sit under it during a light rain. Great product, good instructions, excellent customer service (we ordered a second remote so I do not have to get out of bed to open it in the morning).

We love our awning. It looks sturdy in design and construction. It was more difficult to install than we expected. We hired a handyman to install it to the soffit under the eave. Due to the rafters under the soffit being installed on a slope the awning when first installed sagged. The contractor installed three 2" x 4" sections of board under the eave to attach and secure the brackets. This solved the problem and it worked flawlessly. We initially planned on installing it ourselves but are glad that we hired someone as it would have been more than we could have handled.
Also, the awning is very heavy (12 ft) and it took 3 persons to lift it to hang on the brackets. We had a very difficult time opening the wind sensor and had to ask someone else to open it. Once we were able to open, it was easily installed. We are very glad that we paid extra for the motorized awning. While it is easy to hand crank it takes quite a lot of cranking to bring in a fully extended awning. Overall we are very happy with the awning and would recommend it to others who are considering such a purchase. It may be helpful to know that we paid $250 for installation if you want to figure that into your cost.

I bought a new awning from you people. It has wrinkles in the fabric when rolled up. My installer tells me that he can do nothing about them. When I ask Sunsetter about them they indicated that they could be taken out, but I would have to do it. That is not acceptable to me at all. I feel that down the road they will cause problems. I feel that when the awning rolls up it should not have any.
We are disappointed to hear that you are not happy with the SunSetter you purchased from your local awning dealer. As indicated in your Owner’s Manual, the Awning Fabric has a hem along both ends of the material; some wrinkling is a characteristic of the extra thickness along either edge. This wrinkling may be more noticeable when retracted and after prolonged periods when the Awning is not used. Leaving the Awning open in warm weather should minimize the wrinkling over a period of time. If you are seeing something more pronounced such as a wave across the center of the fabric, we recommend that the Awning fabric be centered on both the Roller Bar and the Front Bar to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. As the manufacturer of your SunSetter, we would be more than happy to walk you through the process of adjusting the fabric ever so slightly. There is no need to be concerned, we’re experts at helping owners such as yourself.

One of the shades was shipped with the wrong color holding clips. I bought cream and they shipped brown. I called on Sunday and we told they would ship out the correct clips within 3 business days. I checked the status of the order today, 3 days later, and it said it was "pending". So I called and was told: "Since you are informing us of this need to implement a fast shipment we will make sure the items will ship to you within 3 business days of TODAY!" They refuse to ship overnight or 2 day since "our items can't be shipped air". This is less than a 1 pound package with two small clips and some screws. LOUSY customer service, and they could care less. NEVER again deal with them. There are others making the same products on the internet for less. I purchased the manual awning back in March. Quality product and I found it simple to install with help. Took about 2 hours total. It has provided us with the shade and comfort on our deck and built very well, held up in some good winds and rain. What we are not happy with is the opening and closing of this. The video demonstrates this with ease. Not the case. Very difficult especially for my wife, going back and forth to expand and lower the arms seems ridiculous. I don't know why this manual one was not made exactly the way the Motorized one is built. This should be something you should look into. The same type of arms as the Motorized one but with a crank and the option to install motor in the future. I wish that I had spent the extra 500-600 dollars more to purchase the Motorized one but I was being cheap and the video for the manual one is deceiving.
The Model 1000XT awning does require some effort to lift the arms into place. Once the awning is open, (except for extreme weather conditions) it can remain open for the season provided proper steps are taken to avoid rain water from collecting on the fabric. This can be accomplished by lowering one side of the awning enough so that water runs off the awning, rather than pooling on the fabric. For tips on using your awning in the rain please review the Operating Manual that came with your awning. You can also view the Operating Manual online by logging into the Owner's Corner portion of our website. One added note, we do have a manually operated awning that is built just like our motorized awning. It's called the Vista, and a motor can be added to it at a later date.

They have to figure the amount of the money maybe the agent has to return. I think that the company is ok but we don't want anything to do with the agent. I have been a SunSetter customer for many years. I had a 900 XL 15 foot width and it was easy to operate up and down, never had a problem. It was fast to raise. It used a spring in the roller to assist in raising the shade. When you lowered the shade, it tightened the spring, and when you raised it, the spring tension made it very easy to raise. It was like a big window shade that you pulled down and the spring wound it up. The new 1000 XL uses a completely new mechanism. It is more difficult to lower and MUCH more difficult to raise. It is also much slower to lower and raise. The hand crank is extremely slow and difficult to use. Because of high winds, we have to raise the shade often. My wife can't operate the hand crank. It takes a lot of strength to raise the shade.
If I had known that SunSetter changed the lowering and raising mechanism from the spring assisted one to a hand crank, I would not have purchased it. They did offer to exchange it for a motorized one for another $1000.00 or more. I am not sure who would pay return shipping. I would have had to take this old shade off and install the new one. No thanks, installing this one was a chore in itself. I am a dissatisfied customer and would not recommend SunSetter awnings. I will say they have excellent and fast customer service. They just sell a product that doesn't work well.
We appreciate your feedback. Our updated Models 900XT and 1000XT model awnings have been popular with many homeowners. There is no longer the need to add tension to or replace springs over time. Our Motorized awning is by far our most popular awning model that can be operated by anyone with the press of a button. It is a more expensive model, but it's not $1,000 more. We will reach out to you privately with details.

I have purchased through Costco and installed three easy shades, one 10' and two 4' ones. The mechanical design was neat but setting up the remotes was just too tricky. I wonder why they have to design it like this (it stops every 36" if you haven't program it otherwise). The problem was that it stopped rolling down halfway even it was in programming mode. I could only get one of them working satisfactory. And that is a proof I actually did the right way.

I bought my awning over 1 yr ago and I still don't have the LED lights for my awning working! When they installed my awning the lights had a broken wire so he said they would order a replacement. The company that I bought it from have been terrible to work with. I finally called them at the end of the summer (after all summer without my lights) and said "when will I get my lights?" He said "weren't they already installed?" I said no! He said "I paid the man to go and do it and he has the parts and now he don't work for me anymore!" I asked for my money back and he said only I could get the money for the lights because he already paid for the installation and now the man took the product and didn't do the job. So I got angry and said "I need to hang up."
So this spring I called him and he said he will order the part again and come out and install it. He said "I have your broken part on my desk all year so I wouldn't forget you!" Then 3 weeks later he called and had the part. So he came with a very young man to install them. He said he ordered the wrong size. "I will have to re-order them again!" Then the lights came in after a few weeks and then he sent only the young man to install. He didn't have clue what he was doing! (He was very nice though) But he couldn't get it working with help on the phone. So they decided to say the power control box is now bad. So they ordered that. It came to my house. I called them and they said he would send someone over. I asked if it was going to be the young man, he said yes! I said "NO! I want someone who knows what they are doing!" He said I will have to wait till he has someone to come a week or 2!! Just very unhappy!!!
We are very sorry to hear that your installation has not been completed. We will reach out to your place of purchase on your behalf and ask that they contact you to arrange to install the new power control box for your LED Lights.

The 20 ft. awning works great. Since our deck is 24 ft. wide, we would have preferred a 24 ft. awning but you do not offer that size. We also would have liked a side screen but we're told that it needs to be detached each time the awning closes. Because we live on a lake with occasional strong winds and are gone from home often, we leave the awning open. The auto-closure unit works great in these winds but would preclude that side screen.

We are very happy with the well designed and quality of the SunSetter awning. I will say we are very unsatisfied with the front/side panels to block the sun. For myself as the lady it is very hard to take off and put on, not to mention very awkward to fold. You really do not want to leave either one on when folding up your awning because it is very sloppy looking on the home. All this said we love the awing but only the awning.

We love our new SunSetter awning. Works great and the motor is so quiet that you can hardly hear it. It is a quality made product. However we had a bad experience with delivery. It was supposed to come UPS and they were to advise us the day before delivery so that we could meet the delivery truck. That was not the case. It came LTL and was in the warehouse for 5 days before we were contacted. It had an incorrect name on the delivery slip. The tube was badly damaged and broken in half, and the plywood disks at the end were missing. It looked as though it had been dropped. Luckily, after receiving direction to open and examine it, we found that it had survived.
We are happy to hear how much you are enjoying your awning. The process used to deliver your awning to the US/Canadian border deviated a bit from a typical delivery. UPS Freight contracted the delivery of your awning to a local company. That process took a bit of time so your awning stayed put while that was worked out. The "wrong name" on the shipment was the name of the individual that UPS Freight contracted to deliver your awning. It all makes sense in the shipping world, but I'm afraid it is not very customer friendly. We are pleased to know it all worked out.

But, needless to say, my neighbor installed the awning without a problem. He anchored it down very well so if a wind came, (unless it is a tornado!), it would not go to Oz! I wasn't prepared for the size and weight of the unit delivered. UPS delivered it to my garage floor. I believe the shipping weight was about 180 pounds. I'm 70 years old and had to figure a way to get it to the deck at the back of the house. Managed it by going through our living room and kitchen and onto the deck. Would have been nice if SunSetter prepared me for this task so I could have scheduled helpers. After assembling (which was quite easy) and setting it upright the next dilemma is getting it to work. We tried following the instructions many times and after three hours the four of us gave up.
While we were trying we also called the SunSetter helpline and were told we had to let it sit for 45 minutes as the motor may have overheated. That didn't help. After a few days, I called SunSetter and talked to a gentleman who walked me through a procedure to get it working. This took probably 45 minutes but finally it worked. Bottom line is, we would never have gotten it to work following the written instructions provided. It is now working fine. As for SunSetter, you people were professional and willing to help whenever asked. Ordering was easy and delivery was prompt.
We are always open to feedback and we appreciate what you've taken the time to share with us and others. We try to educate our customers to be prepared to receive a large item delivered by UPS Freight. We will review the shipping letter to see if we can make that clearer.
Your free standing Oasis awning came to you with the remote programmed to operate your awning. We are sorry to hear of the unnecessary frustration you experienced after assembly.

Original Review: June 5, 2016
I purchased a 15' Sunsetter Pro XL awning on June 2011 and had it professionally installed by contractor SunSetter dealer. I purchased the awning hood also. When the awning was 2-3 weeks shy of 5 years old, the motor stopped working. I called the Somfy motor dealer and they told me I had a five-year full warranty with a 6-month grace period and was entitled to a free motor. Said I should call SunSetter and tell them that.
SunSetter told me I only have a month left on my warranty as it is a pro-rated warranty. Thought it only needed to have the motor reset. My brother tried that and it still does not work. My only other option is to purchase a new motor from them (SunSetter), cost is $420.20 + shipping. I then need to find someone to install it. That will cost more money. I paid $3000 originally and within just short of 5 years, I have an awning I can only use if I hand-crank it out and back. I am hoping to find recourse legally. The awning is still beautiful. I loved it up until about 16 days ago. Any suggestions?

I telephoned SunSetter originally simply with questions about 'possibly' purchasing an awning. My husband and I had considered the idea for awhile. The sales representative was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I asked for samples of fabric which were to be sent within a few days. After about a week I telephoned to determine when the samples would arrive and was told the samples actually had been returned to the company 'address unknown' (however it was the correct address) so they resent the samples that day, I believe. A few days later we decided to order the awning even without seeing the fabric samples because now we wanted to have it installed prior to my mother's memorial service at our home which had been scheduled for April 23rd. She had passed away and this would be a nice addition to our home with guests arriving for the service.
We promptly ordered the awning and were told when it would arrive which it did 'in record time' thankfully! The only problem was that I was told it would come by truck delivery to our home and that my husband a few other men could install it. Well, when I spoke with UPS the morning of delivery determining when it would arrive at our home which is directly on a highway, I was told the driver would simply leave this 200-300 pound very long box at the end of our driveway on the side of the highway sometime late in the day!!! He would not be bringing it directly to the house because of the size of the awning!!!
Imagine that news the day of the arrival. How in the world would we remove it from this major road at the end of the driveway? Suddenly the somewhat simple 'picture of installment' was not simple at all. The UPS man at their office was very understanding and offered the name of a man who installs for SunSetter from the nearby small town of Wake Forest, NC. Well, it just so happened that this same man had telephoned me the day after I originally inquired with the main office of SunSetter to offer his small business as a manner in which to order the awning. I had said, 'No thank you' because one of the sales representatives had said my husband and a few men could install it and made it sound rather simple. This would save us about $400 or so. Every dollar counted right now with the memorial service and all.
Well, I was able to reach the gentleman in Wake Forest and he very kindly agreed to help us reroute the awning to remain at the UPS dock and he would pick it up and bring it to our home with workmen who would install it quickly within a couple of days which he did respectively. We would have our awning for the memorial service after all though it did cost us to have this done, of course. As my husband and I watched the gentleman and his workmen install the 'largest awning' SunSetter has on our back porch we were SO VERY THANKFUL this professional was doing the job and not us! The size of the awning should probably be a VERY big factor in whether you ever suggest that an awning can be installed by a homeowner, even with help from a few others. My husband is a master craftsman in building and is very capable, but this job would have been extremely difficult since this is not his profession.
It is a lovely very large awning and we already truly appreciate all the benefits of having it. We are thoroughly enjoying it in every way, but simply wish we could have avoided the challenging arrival issue. It was a total surprise to have to pay an extra $400 to install it after having been influenced to think we could handle the installment ourselves.
On another note, I am only saying wonderful things about the awning and SunSetter to our friends and guests and feel saying anything otherwise is unnecessary. In fact, a good friend of ours the other day suddenly decided, after seeing our awning opened over our porch, that he would purchase one. I gave him all the information on who to call to order... the gentleman in Wake Forest and to have him deliver and install it. He did a perfect job for us! That is all I needed to say... smile.
We really are glad we purchased one of your awnings and will enjoy it for years to come, as will our guests in our small home business. I will continue to say the good things about SunSetter, I can assure you. Maybe, however, your sales representatives can learn from this response not to make it sound simple to install themselves, for it can be misleading for many people. Let us just learn from this and continue the top quality of performance SunSetter has established for itself. Thank you for listening.

Ultimately, the product itself appears to be of high quality. The distributor was misleading about the end result, there were timing and delivery issues and if I were to do it again, I would not work with that distributor. I had to have customization done after the fact to hide the multitude of wires left in plain view post install. For $3300, that responsibility should not lie on the back of the consumer. SunSetter would benefit from investing in additional training on both the customer service and install qualification of their distributor network.

We lower the awning almost to the ground when not home in case of storms so the wind won't catch it and it helps that we have a privacy fence on the one side where the wind comes from. The replacement awning was a bit smaller than our previous one which I was disappointed on but it still works. Reinstallation was not as easy as expected and did have some screws pop out so in the near future will need to take down and try again. Love the shade and the savings on my energy bills!

I ordered a motorized version of the awning in mid-April. The cost was about $3000, and it was during a pre-season promotion which included many accessories either for free or at a discount, depending on the item. It was shipped UPS: on the day it was shipped, everything was delivered, except the awning itself. I contacted SunSetter and was told UPS had "lost" the 15 ft. long, 14-inch diameter, 150 lb. carton... and that I would have to wait 5 business days for UPS to find it. (It is my understanding that every carton is scanned into and out of every truck and facility at UPS, and their records show that was done all along until delivery to my home, yet one carton was still missing.) On the 6th business day I received an email from SunSetter apologizing that my awning was missing and informing me that UPS was checking into it and they would update me as information was available.
I immediately contacted them to remind them that they had already stated that if UPS didn't find it within 5 business days they would send me a new one free of charge, and since this was the 6th business day that their latest correspondence should be telling me that they were doing just that - not that UPS was investigating and they would contact me later. They responded that they were indeed placing a new order for me. I received contact from SunSetter the following week saying that they would be shipping soon and provided me a tracking number. I checked the next day and found the item had already been shipped and was very close to being delivered: it as scheduled for the end of the next day. The next day UPS contacted me to arrange delivery and we scheduled the following day between 12 noon and 5 pm as I would not be home.
I was told by UPS that I would have to be home as I would need to assist the driver with unloading. I went to work the next morning and then was contacted at 8:30 a.m. with the news that UPS was at my home delivering the awning. The driver unloaded it himself and dragged to my patio area. The carton was damaged and the awning was scratched in several places. I contacted SunSetter and informed them of this - I even took photos of the damaged carton. The installation went smoothly and the awning works well. However, the LED light kit didn't work - the technician walked me through some testing procedures and determined the unit was defective... and the wind sensor which was supposed to be included was also missing. It is now June 1, and I am now waiting again for those items to arrive.
SunSetter has done okay to say, "Sorry you're having so much trouble" and send me touch-up paint and resend missing items, but seems to be missing the point that the items should be packaged sufficiently enough to eliminate the chance of damage/loss in shipping and also should be testing the accessories to ensure they work before sending them. It is a major inconvenience to unpack and install items only to find they are defective and must be uninstalled and the new ones re-installed - not to mention the aggravation of receiving damaged goods and have to wait to receive them, and also to do repairs because of insufficient packaging. The awning itself seems to be what I expected - but not the service nor the quality control... and the customer service responses are more of a standard "Sorry you're having trouble" instead of "Sorry we messed up - how can we make this better?"
I realize part of this is on UPS, but I was still surprised to see how little attention is given to shipping and packing: the awning is about 100 lbs. and is wrapped in shrink wrap with a few foam pieces at 3 or 4 of the points where damage would occur and the whole thing is shipped in a thin cardboard tube. I would think that an ounce of prevention (more substantial packaging, testing the lights, etc.) would save them a lot of money on sending replacement awnings/parts/accessories/paint... and save their customers a ton of wasted time and aggravation... but obviously they aren't thinking that far ahead. I will update this review once I have satisfactorily received, installed, and used all of the accessories and parts. So far the awning seems good, but the experience of receiving it in complete and working order has not been prompt, easy, nor pleasurable.

We love our new deck awning and have recommended it our neighbors. However I have noticed that when open in a rain, one side does not drain well and leaves a large amount of water on the awning. This is only on one side. To me it seems that that side does not open far enough. I have called the installer who admitted that he has little experience with the Oasis model. I explained the problem to him. He said that he would get back to me but hasn't in over a week. Don't get me wrong, the service he provided was fast and efficient on the estimate delivery and installation. I just think that there is something that can make my awning better.

We like our SunSetter very much. Installation instructions were clear and it was not a difficult job. However, raising and lowering it is definitely a two-person job which was not clear, at least to us, in the description of the awning. If you are looking for ease in raising and lowering it, you should definitely consider spending the extra cash to purchase the motor-operated model.

I purchased a 14' Sunsetter Pro XL awning on May 20, 2011 and had it professionally installed by the contractor SunSetter recommended. I purchased an awning cover and kept it covered each winter. When the awning was 2 weeks shy of 5 yr. old the motor stopped. I called them and they told me I had to pay $414 for a new motor + shipping and installation. Now 2 days shy of 5 yr. old the fabric began to unravel at the seams. They told me I needed to pay $375 for a new fabric and install myself. I paid $3100 originally and within 5 years I am told I need to pay 25% of the original cost and no guarantee this will not happen every 5 years. I am stuck with a shoddy product that no longer works and am hoping to find recourse legally.

I do love the product. It looks like it appeared in samples, etc., which makes me happy. This is the second house I have an awning on. One motorized this time. My only concern (complaint) is that it had to be mounted on the roof due to space limitations. That fact is fine and I knew that going in. However, be careful as when the wind blows and it is in its "cradle," the flap that is on the outer edge really is loud because it hits the metal housing. Here in Texas the wind can be strong and it will literally keep you awake at night. Overall the product is great and as advertised, just a design issue to take into consideration. The awning I have is quite wide so that makes the noise louder.
A second awning! We love to hear that. Thanks for being a long time and loyal customer. You may want to consider removing the valance from the awning if the noise from the valance hitting the aluminum hood is disruptive at night. Enjoy your awning...

We are starting our second year with our SunSetter. Ours is 13' X 10', power awning and is excellent in quality. That said, we live in SC KS, where wind above 10 mph is common. We have had three very nice evenings under the awning. Tried many, many more times but auto closer interrupted. Rather it close than get damaged, but if I had it to do over, I would have had permanent structure built. Also be aware the TV ad says $699 or whatever, but mine went to $3,000 quickly. So far, only $1,000 per use.
Thanks for offering your feedback. You may not be aware of this, but you can change the sensitivity setting on your wind sensor to something that makes more sense for your area. The sensitivity setting ranges from a 1 (most sensitive) to a 9 (least sensitive). We ship the Wind Sensor on a 2 setting so there is plenty of room to up that setting. We recommend going up one setting at a time until you find the setting that works best for you.
Permanent structures can be nice in the summer to shade your deck and keep the heat out of your house. In the winter you want the light and heat from the sun entering your home, a permanent structure blocks that. Also, because you can't retract a permanent structure it is always exposed and more prone to damage from snow, ice and wind in the winter. I hope that once you adjust the sensitivity setting on your Wind Sensor you'll be happy with your decision to purchase a retractable awning. I am going to mail you the installation instructions for your Wireless Wind Sensor. They explain how to change that setting. It's very easy but if you have questions just give us a call at 800-670-7071 and we'll walk you through it.
Lastly, with the $200 savings certificate we have awnings ranging in price from $499 for a manual 7ft Model 900XT, to over $3200 for our largest Motorized Model. Prices do not include installation. We have an awning model and price to fit most budgets.

Though the shade is lovely it is very difficult to close. We do not have electricity available at the shade spot, so we had to go with the manual and it takes 2 people to close the shade, 1 at the end holding it up and taking the tension off and 1 at the crank. Not the best for this older couple. Would suggest you have your people let buyers know about this when they are ordering. It would be nice not to have this surprise.
We are sorry to hear you are having difficulty closing your Vista Awning. Your awning is easier to open because its aided by springs in the lateral arms. It requires more effort to close the awning because you’re going against the spring tension in the lateral arms. The good news is your Vista Awning can be upgraded at any time by adding a motor. We understand you don’t have power near the awning. We have motors with an 18 foot or a 24 foot power cord. Perhaps the longer of the cords would be suitable to reach an outlet. If not any heavy duty, outdoor extension cord could be used to reach an outlet. We are glad to hear you appreciate the shade offered by your awning and hope you will consider your motorized options for the future. It doesn’t get easier than pressing a button to open and close your awning.

You expressed concern about the noise the awning makes. The awning shouldn’t be making noise, especially noise that would be disruptive to anyone at any hour of the day or night. We’d like to understand more about what you are experiencing so we can help you eliminate that noise. Please give us a call when you are home with the awning so together we can determine where the noise is coming from and help you correct it. You will find tips to eliminate squeaking noise in your Owners’ Manual. If you are hearing anything other than squeaking please let us know. The manually operated Vista awning you purchased should be easy to open because its aided by springs in the lateral arms. It will require a little more effort to close the awning because you’re going against the spring tension in the lateral arms. The good news is your Vista Awning can be upgraded at any time down the road by adding a motor. With the motor the awning can be opened and closed with the click of a button. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any problems or concerns.

I found myself in a home without overhanging eaves for the very first time (in 80 years) and I ordered a SunSetter just for practicality. It is ideal and so much more than I had hoped for. It is attractive and more than functional. My home stays cool on the hottest of days. And the bonus was the delightful young man who owns the company that installed it. Thoroughly professional and a joy to know.
How wonderful to be surprised by the added benefits of installing a SunSetter Awning. Yours is a message we try to communicate in our literature, but nothing says it quite like you did. Thanks so much for the kind words. We'll be sure to pass them on to your local awning dealer.

The first installation didn't work out due to the distance to a plug-in. We hired an electrician to install a new plug-in under the eves. The installer returned without cost and was able to hide all the apparatus and wires from view. The SunSetter performed to our expectations since we have had some 87 degree days by the pool.

We asked for a 7 foot crank wand and received a 4 foot wand. Now we have to climb on a ladder every time we want to use the awning. This a hassle, is unsafe. Please exchange the wand. WE NEED A SEVEN FOOT WAND PLEASE.
Well, that does sound inconvenient. Your awning must be installed very high or on your roof. The standard crank wand included with your purchase is 56 inches long and works for 99.9% of our customers. We have little call for a longer crank wand except for customers that install a manually operated awning on the roof. For those customers we have an 80 inch crank wand available for purchase. You can contact your local awning dealer or give us a call if you'd like to purchase one. You can also try a store that sells skylights. If you go that route take your existing crank wand with you so you can make sure the end with the hook is the same size so it fits the crank loop on your awning. We hope you are enjoying you deck or patio more now that you have the awning.

I have only had my SunSetter awning a few weeks, and already my girlfriend and I are enjoying it very much. Your representative suggested a motorized awning, and although I had planned on using a hand crank, I am very pleased I followed through with his suggestion. The east of opening and closing the awning is fabulous. I have enjoyed a gentle rain under the awning and am already enjoying and using my deck during the heat of the day. This is a great product, and I am very pleased.

My wife is a fair skinned Redhead, and we weren't using our deck, hardly at all. It sets directly in the sunshine which is fine for me, I have olive skin. But my wife, Debbie, loses the skin on her nose and ears if subjected to sunlight for even a short period. So, we checked out buying an awning. After being turned off by trying to buy an awning from a few other manufacturers and stores, we answered to a SunSetter promotion. The information form was simple and the entire process was consumer friendly. Even the installation was a breeze. I would recommend a SunSetter Awnings for anyone.
Thanks for sharing your experience and your individual need for sun protection. You make points that some may not consider when looking to shade their deck or patio. SunSetter Awning fabrics block 99% of the harmful UVA and UVB sun rays and our Awnings carry the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. We pleased to hear you’re enjoying your awning. We think you made an excellent choice by choosing a SunSetter Awning.

The installation went fairly well. The instructions had a few misleading sections which caused us to have to take the awning fabric back off turn it over. We followed the instructions but they were wrong for this step. Some other instructions not as clear as I would have liked and took a little more figuring than it should. All in all my wife and I who are both senior citizens and handy with tools were able to put it up with an occasional extra hand from our neighbor. Only real disappointment is this wall faces south and the awning is hard to position to block early and late day sun very well. We put it up on a nice day in March and this is only April in northeast Ohio so we have only had a few day to use it so far.
Thanks for sharing your awning installation experience. We are always open to feedback and welcome any suggestions you have to make the process clearer. We hope that you were able to view the installation DVD that was included with the installation instructions in your Owner’s Manual. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. We're glad to see you called us for assistance and we were able to walk you through that process.
We recommend you consider a side Weatherbreaker Panel for your awning. The Weatherbreaker Panel will block up to 90% of the sun’s rays when the sun is coming in on the sides of your awning. The panel can be used on the east facing side in the morning and then moved to the west facing side as the sun is beginning to set. If that's when you use your awning most often it's a good investment. If you want to purchase the side Weatherbreaker Panel just give us a call.

Our new awning is awesome and so easy to use. We originally wanted the motorized model but due to lack of enough hanging space we had to pick the unmotorized model. March 1, 2016 - Contacted SunSetter Support regarding the Oasis Product Motor would close but not open. Yvonne worked with me to troubleshoot the problem and asked that I call back as it was 8 pm and there were no second level staff available to help. April 4, 2016 - Called back and spoke with Jennifer and was asked if it clicks when I open of which I indicated it did. She said the motor was no good (even though it will close with the remote) and I could pay $400 for a new motor. After some discussion the price went to $265. I was told on both occasions that the motor model was replaced in 2013 (Product purchased June 2012) because of a redesign as elderly customers safety was a concern as they would need to get on a ladder to reset the two switches on the motor itself.
I felt that this may be the party line for a defective motor and stated my belief. I have a 5 year warranty which I felt should be honored and the motor replaced at no cost. Both support persons mention that customers normally get ten or more years from the motor. 04-05-2016 - SunSetter called me and offered the motor for $100 with an additional $50 deposit until the old one was returned. I declined as the 5 year warranty was explicit and I felt that I should only be obligated to the 1/80th of the cost of the $400 motor as indicated in the warranty.
I am very dissatisfied as my fiance (Sally **/cust. # **) bought this and a Vista wall mount motorized awning in 2014 at more that $3000.00 and I expected that a defective motor was their responsibility under the warranty. After all she paid for both products expecting to get much more than 3 years 9 months of use from the product.
It’s unfortunate to hear that your SunSetter operates in only one direction when operated via the remote control. While this is unusual, it is, however, covered under the terms of the 5-Year Limited Manufacturer’s Warranty. Based on the troubleshooting performed by phone, it has been recommended that a replacement motor be installed in the awning which we have offered at a discounted price. The full cost of a replacement motor would be $349.00 if it were not covered under warranty.
SunSetter Motorized Awnings are powered by a Somfy motor. Somfy is the premier manufacturer of tubular motors in in the world. We have a long-standing relationship with Somfy and it is our experience that Somfy motors are reliable. We stand behind the motor and all other awning components as outlined in the 5-Year Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty that comes with each SunSetter Awning. This warranty covers defective materials and workmanship in your awning for five years, on a pro-rated basis. The details are outline on our website and within your Owner’s Manual received with your SunSetter. As noted within the details of the warranty, “After one year but within five years (60 months) from the date of the original purchase, a defective component will be replaced upon the purchasers payment of 1/60th of the full retail cost of the component for each month of use prior to the claim.”
The awning may be operated manually should you choose not to replace the motor at the discounted price we have offered. You are also welcome to allow us to troubleshoot the awning with you once more, to rule out any miscommunication during the initial call to troubleshoot the awning operation.
We are proud of our reputation of offering quality products and stand behind our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. We hope that we are able to work with you to ensure you can fully enjoy your SunSetter.

I've had my remote-controlled SunSetter for a year, and apparently purchased one smaller than I needed for my expected outcome. It is 10' by 10' and too small to provide needed shade to enjoy the deck. I was told that was what most people purchased with a deck my size. But, considering the $2600 price tag, I regret not purchasing a larger one or not purchasing one at all. Looks cool... but inadequate. The ads for the bargain prices are misleading, and I regret not having one scratch built.
We’re sorry to hear that the SunSetter you purchased from your local awning dealer is not meeting your expectations. We often hear from owner’s that they wish they had added a SunSetter sooner and some also tell us how they would have purchased a larger size if they had realized how much more they’d be using their outdoor-living space with the addition of an awning. The led light that you can install looks awesome but too much wires showing with this big oversize converter. Not something I would recommend. There are many websites out there that you can buy led strips for lighting. Smaller and much better as it goes for wires. All you need is little bit of understanding how to hook it up. That's all. When I originally looked into ordering the awning, I was not planning to do anything extra, to keep costs down. I am so glad that I listened to the professional that came out to my house. The lighting is great and I have found that we use that feature almost as much as we use the awning for its shade. The combination has created a well-used living space much of the year. We love being able to eat outside or just hang out together in a space that was otherwise too hot or dark to enjoy. Best of all, it retracts in when not in use, allowing sunshine to stream inside during the winter, as compared to a porch, which would have left the house much darker year round. Great investment!
