We really like our Oasis. I wish I had been able to get the motorized version, but available power was an issue for us. It cranks just a bit hard for this old lady with shoulder problems and that is the only negative for us! Provides shade just where we need it. Very sturdy in strong winds when it is closed. We have not had it open during an unexpected weather event. I would buy another one just like it again. Recommended to others!

I wanted a awning that you reduce the sun on my deck. It needed to be easy for me to use. I am an older woman with health issues. It is easy to take up and down. I just push a button. The installation took a few hours. The installers were polite and answer all my many questions. They cleaned up all the debris. I would recommend the SunSetter to anyone. As a matter of fact, I have.

My wife Pat is so pleased with the Awning. She regularly elects to give up the comfort of Air Conditioning at any hour of the day to enjoy the ambiance that her Awning provides. The only regret that we have is that we did not purchase a longer Awning, at least a 20 footer.

After having two enormous pine trees come down on our house three years ago, the sun blazed down on our once-shady deck. Within three weeks from my initial phone call, the awning was installed. We are pleased with the service as well as the quality/appearance of the awning. We bought new furniture and a big outdoor television for our new space. It's like having an additional living room in the summertime.

I'm a single 72 year old female. For me, my 14 ft awning is difficult to roll up and down if an unexpected wind or storm comes up. Have to go from side to side several times because lower arm supports keep hitting wall. It's also difficult to remove the heavy rain guards. It's no fun being on a step ladder in the rain and wind. It's a beautiful awning, but it doesn't keep my patio chairs dry. For me, it was an unwise purchase.
We are sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction with your 1000XT manually operated awning. That awning model does require some effort to operate, so while it’s a great awning, it's not for everyone. The good news is that with your awning once it's open it can remain open all season, except in severe weather conditions. It's important that you keep one side of your awning tilted on one side enough to allow for rain run-off and to prevent water from accumulating on the awning fabric. You made an excellent decision to purchase the optional Rainaway Arches. They provide additional stability and added headroom under the awning. Your awning also does quite well in windy conditions, particularly with one or both arms angled back to the house. We are mailing to you an Owner’s Manual and Operating Manual that gives you guidance for using your awning. If we can be of assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

I should have gotten one a couple of feet wider. But when I had a problem with the remote control, your rep was prompt and helped me solve the problem. My big complaint is seeing the commercials telling me I can now get a $200 discount, and that I could get an awning for $700. You can imagine my consternation at having paid $3000 for mine. That is a very large difference and one I could not really afford. So that makes me very unhappy!

Last spring, we had a SunSetter awning installed on our patio and spent a little extra to have the electric remote control and the metal cover installed. It is well worth the extra money for the remote and cover. The awning has really made our patio more usable during the hot summer months and we can enjoy it even in the rain. In early fall, we hosed it off and let it dry completely before rolling it up into the cover and when we opened it this spring it was like new. This is probably the best thing we have done for our outdoor living space and we couldn't be happier with the product or the local dealer and his installation. We wish we had done this a few years ago when we first looked at them.

This winter the wind must have pulled awning out of protective hood and it ripped. I called installer and he came right over and put bungee cords on it to keep from flapping, and said he would report it and when weather warmer would report problem. Did he? He said it is under warranty. He to take it down when weather warmer. Otherwise I love it.

I have been a Costco member for 11 years. I have cancelled my membership. Here is why: I bought a SunSetter brand motorized awning (18 foot wide) from Costco to cover approximately half of my patio. Upon receipt of the shipment, I noticed the packaging was damaged. Upon opening the container we noticed that the awning had some scratches and dents in the frame. I called Costco and the store manager told me to contact SunSetter. SunSetter said they would send me a replacement arm for the arm that was scratched and dented. It has been over 3 months and I have not received the new arm. SunSetter now claims that I should have written on the bill of lading (I don't even know what that is) that the container was damaged and that is why they have not and will not ship the arm. How would I know to do that as it was not included in their email instructions received when the awning shipped?
Since Costco would not give me a full refund as they stated it was a shipping issue and not a product issue, I decided to install the awning even though the arm was dented and scratched. The arm is now rusting at the scratch and also the cables inside the arms are rusting. SunSetter claims the arm is aluminum and the cables are stainless steel. This is absolutely false information because if they were the product would not rust. I decided after terrible service from both SunSetter and Costco this product is junk and searched online to find another high quality awning. Do not buy from either Costco or SunSetter. You will most likely be sorry and unhappy if you do!

Purchased a 20 foot motorized XL 'Pro Model' via a certified dealer to whom SunSetter referred me. Went top of the line including LEDs, wind sensor, protective hood, patio lights and all weather warranty which is a good thing because it ripped in less than a year. I've received the new awning but I'm being told it doesn't cover the installation for which I must pay. So, basically because of their junk product I'm out an additional $300-$400. Interestingly, prior to purchasing the awning I spoke with a competitor who warned me of SunSetter lack of quality but I didn't heed their advice. Never again.

I worked with Alan, a sales representative, who told me we could get an awning over our table in the back of the building I work in. He took measurements of the area and the wall next to the table then we received a "custom awning". The awning we received was too short and did not clear the wall that he took measurements of. We can't return it because it is custom even though he was the one who took inaccurate measurements. We paid them $1629 and now we will likely have to pay more to lift this awning up. It is so disappointing and I wish I had read the reviews of this company before I had purchased this.
We are sorry to hear of your experience when purchasing your SunSetter Awning. Our records show you purchased your awning from All Surface Roofing and Construction. We reached out to them on your behalf and they informed us that the wall you wanted the awning installed to was not suitable for the awning. It was at that time the free standing Oasis Awning was considered, but not recommended for your needs. We respectfully refer you to your place of purchase for any questions regarding their measuring and your ultimate purchase. We are the manufacturer of your awning and are here for you seven days a week until 10:00 ET for warranty purposes.

My deck can get real sunny during the day so I checked these out when Costco was selling them. I was a little suspect at first but I know Costco never purposely sells me bad products so I went with it. Overall it's a great product and while not quite as good as a covered or screened in porch it costs only a fraction. It was easy to install (I hired someone but they told me it was easy) and it works great everyday. I leave my sunglasses inside and enjoy my back yard so much more.

We were very satisfied with our awning, wanted to have it a long time. The first fabric lasted years, we ordered our second fabric replacement 5-6 years later when a screen installer accidentally fell through and tore the other fabric. We also had 4 rain way arches, screen room, etc. We have been happy with our awning (except for the difficulty of installing and the way you have to install new fabric). We were promised a lifetime of great coverage and wanted to replace the fabric again, but now sun setter does not support the awning we have and Sunsetter has been schilling us to replace our awning, for a discount of course (not much), as they will no longer support it. Since we need new fabric, and they no longer provide it, we are very unhappy with that as now that we need new fabric, we cannot get it. BAD FORM SUNSETTER!
We understand your experience is a bittersweet one. You purchased your awning from us in 2000 and have enjoyed it for many years. That’s a good thing and a testament to the quality of the product. As you know we discontinued selling your awning model in 2004, but we continued to service it and offer replacement parts through 2009, and replacement fabric through 2014. We notified all owners of that model that the awning was discontinued and we offered an exclusive trade-in offer if they would like to trade up for one of our newer models, even our ever popular Motorized Awning. We believe the trade-in offer is generous and over the years many owners have taken advantage of the offer to trade up to a new awning model. Would you be surprised to know that your awning enjoyment has cost you less than $65 a year? We hope to see you take advantage of the trade-in offer in the future. You have the advantage of knowing we offer an affordable, quality, long lasting product. We truly appreciate your business and value you as a customer.

We bought a 16 ft. SunSetter oasis awning and protective cover in 2012. Stitching began to fall apart in 2014 and awning collapsed totally in Spring of this year. Complained to SunSetter, who said awnings normally last 20 years and it was our fault for leaving it out is the bad weather! (16 ft. long, with a protective cover all winter.) Bought a new cover, couldn't fit it because an arm had broken when the awning collapsed. Called SunSetter, again told it was our own fault for leaving it outside. Called Costco, who immediately offered a full refund. The next day SunSetter offered a free replacement (after they found out about the Costco refund offer). No surprise, we refused.
We are sorry to hear of your experience with your awning. While we can't speak to the specifics of what happened to your awning, we can say with confidence that when installed/assembled and used properly none of our awning models just collapse. We would have been happy to work with you on replacement parts to repair your awning, but we respect your decision to return it.

Sunsetter finally repaired our awnings.
Original Review: Oct. 5, 2015
Our 16 foot awning was installed by SunSetter with a warped bar this summer (2015). They replaced it Sept. 22, 2015. Now the elbows are uneven. Manual says this is due to fabric not centered on roller bar and/or front bar. Installer told us to watch DVD to set it to stop! That is not the problem!

First of all, the advertisement for this particular awning for someone 75 years old is misleading. I expected the cost of installation which was a total of 10 hours with a licensed contractor and a helper. It costs more than the awning. Secondly, for me to operate is totally impossible. To change any of the positions of the posts or braces is almost back breaking. It is a waste of money and sadly I had to have it rolled up and never to be used. They even sent me the wrong color. I hope every elderly homeowner never buys any awning unless it is motorized. Stay away from SunSetter.
We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with your SunSetter Awning. Our manually operated Model 1000XT is a fine awning, but it is not the model for everyone. It does require some effort to lift the arms into place. The good news is that with proper operation once the awning is open it can remain open all season, except during severe weather. The affordable price point of our Model 1000 XT awning keeps it popular with many homeowners. It is designed to be installed by the DIY homeowner in 2-3 hours. If you read some of the model specific reviews on our website you’ll see that many customers love their XT awning, while others share your experience. Our Motorized Awning is by far our top selling awning model and its operates easily with just a click of a button. We want every homeowner happy with their purchase from us so, even though you are outside of our 90-day in home trial we will accept a return of your XT awning. We have already sent you return instructions for this purpose. In the future if you are interested in a Motorized Awning please let us know. We’re happy to work with you on the proper size and fabric for your needs. Unlike your XT Awning the Motorized Awning comes to you fully assembled. Installation involves locating studs in the wall and installing the brackets into the studs using the supplied hardware. You will need 2 or 3 helpers to lift the awning into the brackets, secure the awning with retaining bolts, plug it in and you’re good to go.

I have read a number of complaints about SunSetter and their awning products. I have had exactly the opposite experience and wish to balance it out with some praise. I installed our 18' SunSetter awning in the early summer of 2012, so it's a little more than 3 years old. I had 2 men help me lifting it onto the brackets, but otherwise I installed it myself. I planned its installation, after I determined the correct size, and I installed the electrical outlet so that it would be convenient to plug in the awning's motor.
We make a point of retracting it if the wind kicks up--it has retracted automatically only once, other than testing to make sure that the automatic retracting sensor is properly adjusted. We also retract it if it rains, because I had to adjust it for very little pitch--too much rain and water starts to pool on the fabric. The fabric (woven acrylic, light tan "natural linen") shows no sign of wear, yet we have extended and retracted the awning almost daily all summer season, for almost 3 summers. I install the ties on the cover at the end of each season and leave it tied through the winter and unplug the motor. Our summer season begins in early April and extends to late September, so counting from when I installed it, the awning has been used almost daily for a total of at least 13 1/2 months.
In my view, our SunSetter Awning has been a total success. Without an awning, our back deck wouldn't be usable much of the summer due to Colorado's sun. With it, we enjoy our deck almost daily throughout the summer season. In addition, it provides shade for the south side of our sunroom, making it much more usable as well. It also reduces the heat on the west side of the house, which is primarily the kitchen. Attached are early pictures of the awning taken in August 2012.
If I were to take similar pictures today, the only difference would be the deck furniture. My dealings with SunSetter personnel during the ordering process were just fine. We had several discussions and my questions were answered. The ordering was easy, and the products came exactly as ordered, within a reasonable time after placing the order. We have been very satisfied.

Well as a SunSetter owner, we purchased and took care of the installation which was done with the help of some friends. First season, wire came off from the motor and after many call and tons of run around, SunSetter did absolutely nothing... Awning still up on the wall useless, no power to open and close it. No good co. to deal with. No support of any kind. They should stay behind their product and offer some service after sale. Do not recommend SunSetter.
We understand your frustration, it's always disappointing when something goes wrong with a product you have come to enjoy and depend on. The good news is this issue was easily fixable. We see you purchased your awning from us in June of 2010. In June of 2012 you called to tell us that the motor cord had a cut in it. At that time we sent you a replacement motor cord at no cost to fix the problem. Your dissatisfaction appears to be over the installation of the motor cord. As you know we sell awnings direct to the consumer for do-it-yourself installation. Those that do not want to install themselves solicit help from family, friends, neighbors and others hire a handyman or use a local independent awning dealer. The motor cord is easily and safely changed out by any DIYer. We offer technical support seven days a week until 10:00pm ET to assist customers should they have questions while installing their awning or changing out a small part. The awning was always functional and could be opened and closed using the manual override and crank wand supplied with your awning for use in case of a power outage. We hope you are back to enjoying your awning.

We had Early Times SunSetter out of Elmhurst, Illinois come out and measure and give us a quote for a double patio window. We wanted this so the Sun did not come in and scorch our new floors. We paid over $3000 for this Sunsetter. By 1:30pm we have complete afternoon sun covering one of the patio doors. It would be literally no difference if we had no awning at all. They completely mis-measured for our home and over-sold their product.
We have had many conversations with Jeff, the owner or general manager of the business. He keeps telling us that he will not lose any money on this but will try to get someone else to buy this from us, basically at full price, because he is not going to lose money. It doesn't matter that we're out over $3000 for a product that does not do anything at all to protect our floors. One of the times when I had talked to Jeff, he was trying to blame us for this problem.
We had this professionally measured with a presumed professional salesperson at our house. After seeing how this product works and knowing the angle that the Sun comes in, we should have been told that this awning would not work for us. When Jeff was saying that we ordered an incorrect product, I had said to him that they are the professionals here, this is what they do for a living. They measured it and we should not have been encourage to buy a product that would never work in our case. At that point Jeff told me that this is not what he does for a living. Come to find out what their store specializes in chimney sweeping.
Very bad representation and extremely disappointed that we are out over $3,000. I would definitely not recommend this to anyone. I would also like you to know that I have never written a negative comment for anything in my entire life. Something should have been done to make us satisfied customers. What happened to customer service?
We understand how disappointing this is for you. As you know we advocated many times on your behalf with your place of purchase. Early Times Home Solutions is an independent business that buys product from us, and resells to their customers. Their return policy is their own. When we first spoke with someone from Early Times Home Solutions we were informed that the fabric type and color you wanted drove your decision to purchase the 18ft Awning rather than the 20ft Awning. There are two sides to every story and this is no exception. We can’t force an Independent business to take the awning back. We were told that Early Times gave you an accessory (Weatherbreaker Panel) to help cut down on the sun when it is lower in the sky. That will help, and you can also adjust the pitch of your awning down some to block some of the sun when it’s not overhead. You may still have some sun coming in on your hardwood floors, but we hope that you are getting enjoyment from your awning outside on your deck or patio. As the Manufacturer we can help with warranty items and provide technical assistance to you over the phone.

I purchased a SunSetter Oasis model awning for our newly built deck as we could not facilitate a permanently installed one because of mounting space constraints. After some research I felt that this SunSetter Oasis option would work the best and since it was a SunSetter brand it should be a good product with good support since the brand is well advertised all over. We purchased the unit from Costco in the summer of 2012 for about $1300.00. It arrived by freight carrier and with the help of a couple of friends had the thing assembled and deployed in less than a half a day.
The unit worked great and kept our area protected from the harsh sun. We were obsessed with keeping the awning retracted during ANY kind of rain or wind. We opened it in Mid May and winterized it (with provided cover) in mid October. Washed it in May as well. With having done all of that to protect our investment, this May (the third season of use) we detected that the fabric started to come loose from only one corner of the edge mounting. We tried to put it back but it was impossible as it would have to be total removed and re-installed, in addition, it had tears in the edging of that area.
I took several photographs to depict the issue area as well as the whole awning to try and prove to the manufacturer the good shape the awning was in due to our continuous care of the unit. What I got as a response was that they were sorry for our issue but after 3 seasons (actually only two without the issue) the best they could offer me was to to sell me new fabric for over $700.00 plus tax and have me install the new one!
So I responded back by explaining that this was not fair for a unit that has a 5 year limited warranty and that I had to install it as well. There needs to be a skill associated with that. Even though I consider myself a typical homeowner with a good deal of skills, I feared that I could still botch up that installation and possible ruin the brand new fabric, not to mention that the company said I would need at least 3 other helpers for something that could take several hours if not the whole day and then some!
They responded back with offering me the the fabric for $350 plus tax and advised me to find a "handyman" to either install the new fabric or assist me in doing so. I called a local awning business that sold SunSetter products and explained my dilemma and he wanted $350.00 in addition to the $350.00 plus tax that it would cost me to repurchase the fabric. That is more than half the cost of the entire unit, for a product that I took very good care of and never deployed it in harsh weather. So this last weekend, 7/25/2015, I disassembled the unit and now have to get the town to come pick it up for disposal since it is such a huge apparatus. $1300 for 2 seasons of very limited use. What a complete waste of money.
I have gone through this report/review for the simple fact to warn anyone out there that SunSetter must have thousands and thousands of their products out there and I have to assume that for the most part that they must hold up somewhat well, but keep in mind if you suffer a product failure similar to mine, and after reading several other people's reviews out there that have, beware, you are going to be re-investing substantially more money to make the product whole again and you are on your own in regards to effecting the repair. SunSetter says they are a DIY product company. I have many friends and family with all makes of awnings and not a one of them installed it themselves. These are heavy and large devices.
One last point, when I contacted the SunSetter local sales place and asked them if I was making too much out of trying to replace a fabric on my own, he responded by saying, "It ain't easy to do without some experience and it could be tricky." All I expected SunSetter to do was supply me with the fabric and I would be responsible for installation. That's the meaning of limited warranty to me and with many other products that I have purchased in the past.
We understand your frustration. Please allow me to explain the manufacturer’s warranty. It is a pro-rated warranty that covers defects in material and workmanship. As the awning ages the cost of replacement parts increase. You purchased your awning in June 2011. Your first call to us about a problem with the fabric was in May 2015. Your awning was four years old at that time and you were approaching the last year of your warranty. The cost of a new acrylic fabric for your size awning is $679. Your cost at the stage you were in of your warranty was $575.57. We understand that is a lot of money and as a valued customer we agreed to reduce the cost of the replacement fabric to $299. We believe that was a fair and reasonable offer. $299 restores your awning to new condition. The awning frame will last many, many years. Although your awning will be five years old in June we’d be happy to offer you the same deal of $299 if you still have your awning and would like to repair it. Another option to consider is a local tailor or seamstress. We hope you decided to hold on to your awning so you can continue to enjoy the benefits it has to offer.

I wanted to order a Sunsetter Awning. The company told me that they would ship the awning but I would have to have an independent contractor to install it. So, I called the independent contractor to get a price for purchasing the awning and having it installed. The quote that the independent contractor quoted me was $2000 more than what Sunsetter would ship it out for. I asked the independent contractor why the price was so much higher. He said because it cost $500 for installation and that Sunsetter charges them for shipping. Additionally, the contractor told me it would be eight weeks before it would be installed. This meant that most of the summer would be gone. How ridiculous!
While we can’t speak to your interaction or pricing from your local awning dealer we can offer some suggestions for installation. First, if you purchase your awning directly from SunSetter over the phone or on our website we will ship it to you free. If you don’t feel that you can install it yourself we recommend family, friends, neighbors or even a local handyman. If you are interested in a Motorized or Vista Awning you can take comfort in knowing that the awning comes to you completely assembled. Installation involves locating the studs and installing the brackets directly into those studs. Once the brackets are installed you’ll need 2 or 3 helpers to lift the awning into the brackets, secure it with the supplied retaining bolts, plug it in and you’re good to go. We provide step by step written instructions as well as an installation DVD. Help could be as close as a BBQ away. If you feed them they may come. The number of brackets you’d need to install ranges between 3 and 6 depending on the size awning you purchase. Don’t let another summer pass without a SunSetter Awning. Don’t forget you have a 90-day home trial when you buy directly from SunSetter.

I had a manual Sunsetter years ago when I lived in Fresno, CA. It worked great. So I trusted them when I wanted an awning in Las Vegas. I received the awning in April 2015 and had it installed by my handyman. It has been up for two months and has been out about 8 times. On July 4th I noticed that the fabric was separating at the edge of the awning. I called the manufacturer. The five year guarantee of the fabric does not include installation. They are sending a complete ten foot replacement of the 13 foot wide awning for me to install. The first installation cost was $350. To remove it, strip out the fabric and reinstall the fabric will run at least $500. In their ads they brag about the high quality of the fabric and the 5 year warranty. A fabric failure in two months doesn't engender much faith in the quality. The warranty isn't worth much if they will not install the material. Should have used a local manufacturer where I can have local recourse. Bummer.
We are sorry to hear of an issue with your awning fabric and the confusion over the warranty. We built our business on selling to the do-it-yourself homeowner. We have never offered installation. For those that cannot or prefer not to install we suggest friends, family or even a local handyman. We have a network of local independent business that buy awnings from us for resale to their customer. Many of those local awning dealers will install and service awnings. We provide detailed written instructions and we also have a group of technical agents available seven days a week from 8am to 10pm that can assist a customer if they have a question during installation.

In 2011 I bought a Sunsetter Awning online. It cost me $1350 (with shipping). I was under the impression that it will be installed by their dealer, but I was mistaken. When I received the materials at my house, it included a list of the installers in my area which I was supposed to call to arrange the installation. The list had 3 contractors. I called all 3 but only one of them called me back. He informed that he will charge $350 for the installation and it will take him 3 weeks to come to install it. This means that from the day of purchase to installation, it will take 5 to 6 weeks.
Last week, I noticed that one of the Awning arms are getting loose from the siding. I called several contractors who they all declined to come and look at it because none of them have experience with awning. So I decided to call the nearest awning dealer near me. The dealer person opened a ticket for me and said it could take up to two to three weeks before one of their contractors call me. He said that they do charge a minimum of $129 just to come and look at it. After some heated discussion, he said that he will try to expedite that someone call me in less than two weeks.
Three days later a contractor called and asked me what is the problem. After I explained to him the issue, he said that he believes that the installer didn't mount the awning correctly and he may have to take the whole awning out and reinstall it and that will cost $800. I explained to him, if that is the case, I have no choice but to accept his price, but he needs to show me for sure why does he need to take the whole awning out. He said that he will send someone next day to look at it.Today, the contractor showed up with the intention to take the awning down and reinstall it. I told him that the awning doesn't needs to be taken down.
He agreed with me but he said that it will still cost me $800 to remount the arm on the siding. I called the dealer to explain the situation, but he told me that this is a matter between me and the subcontractor and they don't get involved with it. The subcontractor left after I refused to pay him the $800. Now I have awning that I spend nearly $1800 which I can't use because it may fall down. This product takes too long to install and you are on your own if something goes wrong with it. We are left at the mercy of the manufacturer contractors.
We located your awning purchase and are very surprised and disappointed to see that you have not reached out to us for help since your purchase on our website on 4/18/2010. We would have offered assistance to you immediately. Yes, we sell factory direct on our website and the awning is designed to be installed by the do-it-yourself homeowner. We do not supply a list of local awning dealers or installers with any awning shipment, although you could access that information on our website. The local awning dealers are independent businesses and as stated on our website they set their own pricing, we don't control or influence those costs. We do have a team of tech trained phone agents that would have been happy to help you over the phone at any time. You have one of our Model 1000XT awnings. It is not necessary that that particular model awning be installed into anything structural but it does need to be installed to wood. If one bracket is pulling out of the wall it may be that the screw did not hit wood making it easier to come loose. We will attempt to reach you by phone to offer assistance. If we can’t reach you please reach out to us when you are home with the awning. We can help you.

June 25th 2015, three phone calls and one email. This is the second SunSetter awning I have purchased in the last 14 years. I'm very happy with the product. Not so much with customer service. I ordered the awning on May 2nd, and was promised an indoor/outdoor carpet. When it didn't show up, I called customer service. I was told it was shipped on May 22nd and it would take three to four weeks. I tried to get tracking info and was told that SunSetter can't get that info. It is now June 25th and I called again. The agent was no help whatsoever. I asked who I could speak to, to get the tracking info and was told the only info you have is the name of the carpet manufacturer. No phone number no address. The agent told me to look it up on the internet. I asked how long to wait before I ask for a replacement. All she would offer was that it was sent on May 22nd. I should wait the full four weeks to call back. Tomorrow (June 26th) is four weeks.
I pray I never have a problem with the awning, because the thought of dealing with SunSetter Customer Service gives me a headache. As it stands right now, not only will I never order from SunSetter again, I will tell everyone I can about the poor service I received. If you want to repair the situation, I would suggest someone take the initiative to actually offer some help.
We are sorry to hear of your experience with our team. We ordered a replacement rug on 6/30/15 and understand you received it without issue. The free rug was an early order bonus with your qualifying purchase. It drop ships from a fulfillment house in bulk. Because we don't ship it from our facility tracking information is not available. It's very unusual that a customer would not receive their free rug. Once the expected delivery time passed we were able to replace your rug. We apologize for the inconvenience.

They sold me an awning and sent a rep out to assist me with picking out one, ordering, etc. I was not told all the important details such as: it is not meant to be out for rain, which each representative customer sales rep on the phone contradicted what the other said and disagreed with statements. They don't tell you need two people to siphon the water off of the awning through the use of a hose. They also don't tell restrictions with the wind. I wanted to return it and they said since I purchased it through an independent rep, it was not their responsibility. Not only did they not try to accommodate me, they were so rude!!!
I reported them to the Better Business Bureau (for what it's worth). I will never purchase a product from this company again, nor will I use Jim the Handyman in Branchville, NJ again!! He also told me there was nothing he could do, even though he originally quoted me a money back guarantee as long as I was within the allotted time, which I was.
We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with your awning purchase. Your Vista awning is a shade product and it can be used in light rain as long as water is not allowed to collect on the awning fabric. The process for removal of water once is had collected on the awning fabric was written with safety in mind. We do not want anyone standing under an awning full of water trying to remove the water. We did advocate on your behalf with your place of purchase and they did agree to accept a return of your awning less a restocking fee. It is our understanding you did not want to do that. You’ve had your awning for three years now so we hope you have come to enjoy the sun protection afforded to you by the awning. We purchased our SunSetter awning in the late spring of 2013. We had it installed by the representative for SunSetter. The size is 16 x 20 and it is motorized with the remote. Price was $4000.00. Now it is June of 2015, just 2 years later, and the stitching is coming out leaving the panels separated. I called the representative that we purchased it from and he told us the warranty was out and it would cost us $85.00 for him to come out to look at it and another awning would be $450.00. So I stitched it together myself. The separation was open about 8 in. Now 2 weeks later, it is coming apart farther up. I called SunSetter, and now I am told that they are giving us a great deal, only $349.00 for the canvas... yeah right. I feel that after spending $4000.00, what is another $349.00?
So I ordered another canvas today. It is supposed to come with directions for us to do it ourselves, but if I want someone to install it, then I must pay labor. I don't think this should be, but I have no choice. I hope this one will last longer. I know I will never purchase another one from them, although it did keep my deck cooler when the sun was hot. I should have invested in an aluminum awning in the first place and I wouldn't have had this hassle. I will not recommend them to anyone. In fact, our neighbor asked us last night how we liked ours, as they were thinking about getting one for their deck... we told them not to waste their money.

After the first time I might have to deal with them I will notify my Attorney General and my News station and let them deal with this company in a legal way. I hope these were people who just didn't do something right. But if you offer a 5 year warranty then you stand behind it, that means if something breaks under the warranty and it should not have broken then your company needs to pony up with no charge of any kind to the consumer of your product not even freight!! I think these people should file a class action lawsuit against the company if their complaints are right especially the lady that had it fall down on her!

I ordered SunSetter's XL model with all upgrades, The good Hood, The Wind Sensor and the LED Lights. I was quoted the price of $3498.97. When I checked their statement that they emailed me the price was $3948.97 an instant $500 spike in the price. I called them (The Call Center) and informed them that what I was being charged was not what I was told it was going to be. They had the balls to tell me, "That's too bad, the price was $3948 and that was the way it is". I told them I wanted to talk to someone higher up to ask why. They told me they would have someone contact me.
It's going on 5 days now and not a word (I called the call center 3 times since then and sent 3 emails). They state a response would be made within 24 hours, this is clearly not true. I will never do business with a company that hides behind call centers and email addresses. This is only the start of my letting as many people I possibly can what poor ethics these people have. I'M CANCELING MY ORDER.
We reviewed the recording of the sales call and found the price quote given at the time of sale was accurate. Mr. Peterson simply transposed the numbers when he wrote them down... $3498.97 vs $3948.97. We had several post sale conversations and emails with Mr. Peterson trying to come to a reasonable price that could work for us both. Mr. Peterson is a contractor that was buying the awning to resell to one of his customers. He very much wanted the price to be what he wrote down and quoted to his customer. We were willing to work with him on a free accessory, but we could not take another $500 off his order. Mr. Peterson declined our offer and he did cancel his order with us. I can personally assure you that we worked very hard for Mr. Peterson and I don’t believe his review represents those efforts.

The above described unit was installed by an authorized Sunsetter dealer on August 15, 2008. Within five years, the awning fabric panel(s) stitching began deteriorating - resulting in the fabric panel(s) separating. The five (5) year Sunsetter limited warranty allowance was not worth the hassle! Fast-forward to today, march 27, 2015. I spoke with a Sunsetter customer service representative, via telephone, to order an awning fabric replacement. Surprise! I was told that I could not order an awning fabric replacement because Sunsetter no longer made the Model 1100.
They would, however, offer me a $300-$400 discount on a new, upgraded, motorized unit. I informed the customer service representative that all I needed was an awning fabric replacement for a unit that I paid $1,699. 00 six years ago... only to again be told that Sunsetter could not fulfill my request since the Model 1100 is no longer made. Asking the customer service representative to affirm that my original 10'x12' awning was manufactured by Sunsetter - she replied 'yes'. I then asked her why the 10'x12' awning replacements being offered in the Sunsetter catalog could not be substituted. Her response (again!) was: "Because the Model 1100 is no longer made." All I need is four (4) panels of fabric, sewn together - along with a valance -- and, for this I am expected to spend another $1,600 dollars for a new motorized unit to replace one that is working fine? I don't think so! What a joke!!!

This company has engaged in fraudulent and misleading advertising. I received a call from the head of customer service, Xitlalic **. In 1995 we purchased a Sunsetter awning for $793. Two years later we purchased the screen house for $349. Later we got the rain-away arches. We love the whole set up. It stays up all summer here in Minnesota, through high winds and hail. It has an excellent design. The arms do not bend as the awning is lowered. Instead they telescope, so when it's not fully extended, you don't have ugly angled arms on either side, getting in your way. It's just one long continuous arm on either side. The roof fabric for the last two years has developed small holes, and they are getting bigger, but we can't believe we have gotten so much use out of it and can't believe it has lasted so long. Rain doesn't get in yet, but we know it needs to be replaced soon.
Today in the mail we got a notice from Sunsetter that our model's roof replacement is no longer available, but as valued customers we can buy a new awning for $894. That sounded too good to be true. After reading these reviews and complains, I can see it is too good to be true. Sunsetter's quality control has gone downhill. They really used to make a substantial awning with a great design. I am sad that we can't get a replacement fabric. We do not mind paying more for quality. Sounds like we should check out Retractableawnings.com.

Based on their July and August TV ads, I ordered the promotional sales kit with all questions and answers about the SunSetter Awnings. I decided, based on the questions and answers, to order a SunSetter Vista 13 foot, manual operated awning. I called SunSetter and spoke with a very enthusiastic salesman. I told him I'm a 73-year-old lady and installing the awning myself was not an option. He told me the awning could be installed by most men. I told him I was not married, so it was important to have an installer or I would probably buy the awning locally so it could be installed. He said SunSetter had no one in my area, but gave me the names of two local business owners. Neither responded to my phone calls. It took me ten days to find a person to put my awning up.
I had 14 days from delivery to check a 100 plus pound item in a heavy cardboard cylinder for shipping damage or manufacturing flaws to notify SunSetter. OOPS. They didn't have an installer in my area and I didn't have a husband. Oh well, let's sell an awning and anything else. It took 3 hours for one man to put the awning up and he worked straight thru no breaks. The salesman said it took two hours to put an awning up. On what planet I don't know! Five hours later, I have an awning and a cover. My problems have just started!!
I crank this little 13 foot beauty out the first night to keep the master bedroom window shaded from heat and early morning sun - works like a dream!! Shade comes to the area at 11 a.m. and out I go to crank the awning in for the day. I take hold of the crank handle and try to turn it to retract the awning. OOPS - The weight of the rolled out awning is so heavy that I manage one turn with great effort followed by three more turns that retract the awning 6 inches!! I weigh 110 pounds, stand 5 foot 2 inches on my best day. Hope I never have to beat a storm or high wind. I couldn't do it.
All the questions and answers, nothing covered the weight of an extended awning regarding hand cranking versus a motorized awning. My awning is only a 13 foot. How many elderly people or women have purchased this problem not knowing? The salesman had all the answers, but nothing touched on this little problem. I called the company. Their answer: "Buy a three hundred dollar motor and have it installed." Question - Were they aware of this type of problem arising from other sales to elderly or smaller people regarding the hand crank?? It is so hard to crank. I can't believe that without a gear system they would even sell a hand crank awning without telling the potential customer how hard it will be to operate. Thus informing the potential customer of what they are buying!! The salesman knew I was a 73-year-old woman, and single!! Shame on SunSetter for not informing me as to possible problems. I paid $2400.00 for awning and installing.
We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with your Vista Awning. Our records indicate that based on the information you provided to us at the time of sale our recommendation to you was a 20ft Motorized XL awning. This is the model we felt would best suit your needs. You elected to purchase the Vista Awning which is a great model awning, but it is operated manually using a crank wand. The model specific reviews on our website show some owners feel the same way you do about operating the Vista Awning, while others love it and have no concerns with operation. The lateral arms on your awning are spring loaded. The awning opens easier because of the springs. When closing the awning you are going against the spring tension which requires more effort. To get the most out of your investment you should consider converting your manually operated Vista Awning to a Motorized Awning. The Vista upgrade kit is on sale through 5/23/16 for $299.99 (regular $399.99.)
The fourteen days to report damage is something we ask all our customers to do which is based on the time we are allowed by UPS Freight to file a claim for transit damage. We know not everyone can open their awning within that timeframe, but we appreciate those that do. If it took you two months to open you awning and inspect it we would always stand behind our warranty and replace damaged parts at no cost.
Lastly, your concerns with installation. All of our agents have installed all our awning models. I have heard anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours from customers who have installed their awning. A lot depends on the wall the awning is being installed to and how long it takes the installer to locate studs in the wall. We provide tips in the installation instructions on how to locate the studs on an inside wall and transfer those measurements to an outside wall. The awning itself comes to you completely assembled and for your size awning (13ft) installation involves mounting three brackets into the studs, level and plumb. Once the brackets are installed you will need 2 or 3 helpers to lift the awning (100 lbs.) into the brackets and secure it with the supplied retaining bolts and you’re good to go. If we can be of assistance please don’t hesitate to call us.

On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, I purchased a Sunsetter motorized awning from Costco after seeing an ad in a Costco flyer. The awning was delivered approximately 5 weeks after I ordered it, much longer than what the salesperson told me at my local Costco. I am a contractor by trade so installing a retractable awning should have been simple. Unfortunately, it was not, due to the instructions being very difficult to follow. To boot, the order of installing the items was incorrect. I figured this out after reviewing installation instructions for the Palermo Plus model on the Retractableawnings.com website.
After only a few months of having a Sunsetter installed, I have noticed a lot of rust on the supposed non-rusting aluminum frame and also noticed rust on the cables in the arms (where they fold). I know that soon the cables will most likely snap due to rusting cables. I contacted Costco today to see what they can to do to help with the rusting arm cables and frame and Costco said they can't help and that I should instead contact Sunsetter, which I did. I was told by customer service at Sunsetter that I should contact Costco as the product was not purchased from Sunsetter direct.
I contacted Costco and was told once again to contact Sunsetter. Talk about frustration! This time, I asked for a supervisor at Sunsetter. The supervisor who I believe was actually another customer service person stated that the arms would not under the circumstances be replaced as the pro-rated 5-year warranty does not cover rust since my awning was installed near the ocean.
Normally, Costco accepts returns on all items purchased, but in this case would not accept the return and said I need to return it to Sunsetter. Sunsetter would not accept the return as they say it was bought at Costco. I have documented the phone correspondence, names of those I communicated with and taken pictures and will file suit in small claims court for a full refund. I removed the Sunsetter awning and have stored it in my garage.
Since I really need a retractable awning for intense sun protection, I methodically researched online for a product with a longer warranty that will not rust and that had excellent reviews. I found it at Retractableawnings.com. I only wish I had done my research and found Retractableawnings.com before wasting my money and time with Sunsetter! Sunsetter product and service is horrendous. If I could give zero stars, I would!

I contacted SunSetter to get a replacement fabric for a SunSetter product that had been purchased by the previous homeowner. First, they were unwilling even to deal with me unless I was the registered owner of the product. Second, although they have the fabric I need in stock and available, they refused to sell it because the model I have has been discontinued and they are having a problem getting the rivets needed to re-assemble it after it is taken apart to install the new fabric.
The "customer service" representative I spoke to was unwilling to do anything to help me solve the problem. The general idea clearly is that if you buy one of their products, don't expect to be able to get replacement parts - if something breaks or wears out, they apparently want you to buy a whole new unit rather than help you repair yours.
We do understand the frustration you experienced because the awning model you have is discontinued. The previous owners of your home purchased the awning in 1998. Because you are not the original owner you may have missed the numerous notifications via US Mail to owners of that awning model about our plans to discontinue that model in 2004. Even after we discontinued selling that model awning, we continued to service it and offer replacement parts through 2009, and replacement fabric through 2013. We notified all owners of that model that the awning was discontinued and we offered an exclusive trade-in offer if they would like to trade up for one of our newer models, even our Motorized Awning. We believe the trade-in offer is generous and over the years many owners have taken advantage of the offer to trade up to a new awning model.
Our Customer Service team did what they could which was to educate you on your options. They can’t produce replacement parts that no longer exist. We went to great lengths to educate all previous owners of this model via the mail, multiple times at great expense because we do care about our customers and we wanted every owner to have ample notice and the time to order parts, even fabric for future use. We would be happy to extend the trade in offer to you if you would like to purchase a newer model awning.

Sunsetter advertises that its products can provide shade to the sunny side of the house which can help reduce the A/C bill. They sell a motorized version with a wireless wind sensor which means one can leave the awning open and leave home and take advantage of the shade it provides yet, not have to worry about damage to the awning if heavy wind picks up because the awning will self close. So always closing the awning when one is not home, specially during the hot part of the day when one is at work, defeats the purpose of the awning as advertise which equals to wasting money. That is what I call common sense and not what you claim it to be!
We agree if wind is the only concern and you purchased a Wireless Wind Sensor you should be all set. There are areas of the country that experience sudden, heavy rains and that would be a concern for an unattended awning. Under those circumstances water accumulates quickly and is quite heavy. For that reason we recommend you close the awning when it's unattended. You are the best judge of the weather in your area. If you have any concerns at all about the days weather, close the awning before leaving the house.

I have a motorized awning that I have had for 14 years and have moved it to two different houses. I did the install in both locations with minimum help from a friend. I have been very pleased with the product and mostly pleased with customer service. This spring I was experiencing motor problems and the motor finally quit working. Called customer support and the young lady told me I needed a new remote. I told her I did not have a remote, but that the control was the old style and was mounted in a weatherproof electrical box on the side of the house. She said she was positive that the new remote was needed. Ok - I made sure they would send a call tag to pick up the remote when it was decided that I didn't need it. Well I did not need the remote!
I spoke to a higher level tech and we determined that it was probably the gears in the motor. Ordered a new motor and the ground prong on the plug was damaged. They could not send just the new plug. Had to return the entire motor. Again a call tag was emailed to me for the return process. The third time was the charm and the second motor and the remote worked fine after programming the remote while talking to the tech on the phone. The programming instructions were a bit difficult for me to understand, but they were very patient and walked me through it. Overall I am very happy with the service and response that I have gotten from SunSetter.

I purchased mine thru Costco. Prompt delivery and a quality product BUT the claim it will reduce underside heat is SO wrong. I live in northern CA with high summer heat and low humidity. When the ambient temp is 87, the temp under my awing is 95+! That is clearly not what SunSetter says in their ad. I have found the awning radiates and intensifies the sun and resultant heat. The awning is mounted on the north side of my house so I am very surprised AND disappointed by that problem. It is better closed than open in the summer. It is interesting how SunSetter does not allow customer reviews on their site... Hint?

I recently contracted to have SunSetter Shades installed on my 3rd floor balcony to save money on energy costs. The depiction and my view of this product had guide wires on either side of the shade to support and assist in even roll and unroll of the shade. When the shades were delivered there was no guide wires but instead elastic bungees with hooks.
SunSetter implies only their motorized shades have guides while their advertisement expressly states "Our manual EasyShade is a great value, featuring all the same components as our motorized model, but without the motor." They immediately jumped on how they could sell me the motorized unit and expected the contractor that provided them to eat the cost. The problem that exists is that when the wind blows ever so slightly without somewhat rigid support the bottom stiffener will be clanging against my aluminum railing or if above rail, flapping in the wind. I'm sure the bungees won't maintain any appreciable support. Nowhere did any indication of bungee supports come up in ads both visual or audio.
I worked as a home improvement contractor for over twenty years and refused to allow my contractor to take the brunt. When I was talking with SunSetter's supposed customer service - Oxymoron - they immediately go to it is your fault mode. SunSetter wants your money and has NO intention of satisfying anything other than your payment to them.

Purchased a motorized SunSetter brand awning April 3, 2014. The awning was supposed to ship on April 10. It did not. I called SunSetter several times and was told by customer service that the order was in production and would be shipping soon. It finally shipped and was received at the end of May - one and half months after ordering! SunSetter used a circular tube to pack the awning for shipping and the awning must have rolled around in the tube in the truck and was somewhat damaged. Since we had a family event at our house, we decided to install the awning using SunSetter's poor instructions.
We placed plenty pitch on the arms as SunSetter says to do. Even though the pitch of the arms was 60 degrees (we have pictures to prove this), rain collected on the awning fabric and caused the arms to snap. SunSetter states that we didn't have enough pitch on the arms and will not replace the awning or arms under warranty. We have filed a claim with the Attorney General's Office and also a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
We looked online and chose a reputable company that specializes in retractable products Retractableawnings.com. Their Palermo PLUS, Bologna and Venezia models are heavy duty, strong, commercial grade and come with a 25-year NON PRORATED frame warranty. We chose the Palermo PLUS model and are ecstatic with our purchase. Comparing the Palermo Plus model to the SunSetter is like comparing a Lexus or Mercedes Benz to a Kia. DO NOT order from SunSetter!

I ordered a Sunsetter Awning. I confirmed I would receive $200 off an awning plus the promotional items. I discussed the final price, what was included and set up monthly payment plans on my credit card. Several days later I received a message on my voice mail to call them. When I returned their call, I was told the order was held because I received a double promotion credit explaining I could not get the $200 off and the promotional items. They wanted another $200 to release the order. I told them to cancel the order because I was not going to pay more than I agreed upon with their representative. I was told they cancelled the order but it was still being shipped, (contrary to the fact I was told the order was held up) and I should just refuse it and tell UPS to return it. I did that.
Then I did not get the credit on my credit card. I called Sunsetter Awnings and they said it would take up to two weeks for the credit. I called today and was told I was given a credit on my credit card almost $200 short of what they charged my credit card for shipping costs. It was their error! They quoted me a price and then changed it! I asked for the E-mail address of the president, Adam Sterling, and they did not know his e-mail address and could not provide me with a phone number for him. I could go on and on but you get the idea. That is no way to do business.
We understand that it can be confusing receiving multiple promotions around the same time. Our policy is to always give a customer whichever promotional offer they prefer, but we do not combine offers. I apologize if the promotions weren't explained to you properly when you ordered your awning. We do our best to make our offers and pricing clear in all the promotions we mail and email. At no time was it our intent to mislead you. All our pricing is available to everyone on our website and the Idea Kit we mail as well as in all subsequent promotional mailings. My husband and I scheduled an appointment through the internet to have someone talk to us and give us information on the SunSetter Awnings. We had looked at them and thought it would be a good product. The representative, David **, came to our home and was met there by his installer. They measured the area and the installer made comments about removing part of the wood of our eaves to attach the awning. Mr. ** said that was not necessary and this 180-200 pound attachment could be installed with just a few screws. We purchased the awning, and that evening started thinking about the added weight being placed on our home. I called the next day and cancelled our order and asked for a refund. After not receiving our refund in a few days, my husband called and was told it was being "processed".
After twelve days we got a check for $240 less what we had paid. A note from David ** said it was "normal and customary expenses". He offered to give us the $240 credit on any future purchases. This man spent less than an hour of his time on his normal route and area that he serves. We feel like we have been robbed. David ** and Sunray Home Solutions LLC is based in Florida and we are in Alabama.
We are sorry to hear you decided to cancel your awning purchase. As long as the awning is installed into something structural like studs or rafters it would have been fine. We reached out to your place of purchase on your behalf and they agreed to refund you what you paid less $50. It is our understanding you agreed to that amount as a fair settlement. If we can be of assistance in the future please let us know.

Then over the phone this man, who goes by the company name of Enhanced Comfort Insulation, says to me, "...yeah you didn't know, right? You had no idea, huh?" Yeah right... very sarcastically and critical. I continued to work with him. He's calling me several times 2x from the bank telling me the check didn't clear. I called my bank each time to find out what happened. Our bank confirmed No check was returned.
After a week of calls to us, he then called to set up an install and requested a certified check only. I responded that we were not at fault regarding his bank difficulties and had received no check back or fees. He insisted on a certified check. Over the weekend he called us to confirm I had gotten the certified check. The morning of he called again to confirm I had gotten a certified check. I called him back because I missed his, called and told him to ring the bell and that I would be there before he completes the job with the certified check. This man insisted that we give him the certified check before he installs. I explained to him no one offers completed payment. I had to replace the motor on my awning. They sent me a new one. I paid a $50 core or shipping charge, can't remember. Tech support has been hit or miss. Kind of depends who answers and how educated/trained/product knowledge. One guy kept parroting a script and could not answer any direct questions. He even made up nonsense answers when he did not know. He should have just said "let me get the answer and get back to you," etc. At any rate, called the next day, and got a subject matter expert on the line. I wanted to test the old motor and the new one before I wasted any time on the install. Mine is free standing, tall and heavy. Tricky and dangerous to tip over and tip back up.
I used a 12 foot step ladder and winched off the top with 2 separate ratchet straps. I recommend 4 tall strong people instead. The reason I am writing: This product seems to be made of quality components, but there are design problems. 1. It catches rain, hundreds of pounds of water, be careful! 2. The canopy is not tensioned well, the fabric is slack despite well designed springs. The free stand one is heavy and needs to be bolted down. A strong breeze can lift it up and take someone out. I have got mine working. The new motor talks to the remote, the first one only does it partially. I will now install the wind sensor/closer. Wish me luck!?
The good part: 1. The canopy is large and quick to put together and set up; 2. I like the shade, we will trick it out with some rope lights for night time parties. 3. I like that I can close it when I want to, and MOVE IT! Was it worth the $2200 from Costco? I will get back to you, I hope so. But not yet. A note on the competition, I don't know who they are and what they are worth. My sweetie bought this one, I am the onsite tech. :) Just do more research than we did.

I picked up my brother's 14 foot Motorized Awning from Sunsetter, at the factory, that was ordered and paid for a couple weeks earlier. The awning was bought during a tax free weekend, so a few dollars were saved. The shipping was about $140, but I have a car with a rack, so I bought some straps and put the tube on top of the car and drove it about 50 miles myself, saving a little bit of money. I had to stop and strap it down tightly a couple times as the cardboard tube flexed on top of the car, but I kept an eye on it and it worked out well. Go just have to be careful about stuff like this and use good sense. We're all about saving money, particularly when it's tax money or delivery fees. We also did the installation ourselves, saving us even more money.
The awning has the woven acrylic fabric in the natural tan color. It will match the natural shingles on the house, nicely. Sunsetter said the fabric is not Sunbrella, but a generic form of fabric from the same source, Glen Raven. I think it comes from Georgia, in the United States. It is not Chinese, as a previous poster mysteriously claimed. There were no consequences, as this site asks for, but none-the-less, I will continue with our experience.
After watching the installation video and determining that my brother and I could install this Awning with confidence, we performed the process. There was a professional dealer available on Cape Cod, but we "do it yourself" kinds of homeowners, when practical. He has a Cape Cod style house, on Cape Cod. It's like a two story house, but the second floor has a steep pitch so the second floor is more like an attic than a true second floor, as in a colonial type house. The only tricky part was finding the header board between the first floor and second floor, in which to drill and mount the four mounting brackets.
We measured from the window sill to the floor, inside the second floor bedroom above the deck where the awning was to be mounted. Add a couple inches for carpet and underlayment, and that is where we expected to find the floor joists that we needed to mount the brackets into. We measured outside, from the window sill to just below the underlayment, and marked that as the height of where the header or floor joists should be. That was the top line for the bracket placement. We measured width and marked for bracket placement along the length of the mounting space, just as the installation instructions directed us to do. We hit solid wood on every hole as we drilled all eight holes for the four brackets. We bolted the brackets to the wall and shimmed behind them to make sure we had a solid, tight fit with no empty space behind the brackets and shingles. The house has Cape Cod cedar shingles that overlap each other. It took under and hour to measure, mark, drill, and mount the four brackets.
We lifted the awning, which came fully assembled, from the deck up to the brackets which were about 9 feet off the deck. The awning was heavy and we struggled a little bit, because we're old guys with desk jobs and don't go the gym like we should. No incidents, just a little oomph required. Three people might have been better, but my nephew had recently left for college and wasn't around to help. The awning is secured into each bracket with stainless steel bolts and nuts that are provided in a bag, in the shipping tube. The first three bolts slid into the brackets just fine. The last one was a little tricky because the house wasn't perfectly straight, like the awning was. To solve this, we lifted on the front leading bar of the awning and that gave enough room for the last bolt to slide in. Overall, we spent just under an hour and a half doing the entire installation, from unpacking the tube to plugging in the motor and opening the awning. Wow, it covered the deck so nicely, with style. The awning has been up since late last year and has been no trouble so far.
His wife is looking forward to a full summer under the awning, instead of using that cheesy little sun umbrella that kept blowing over in the wind. We're planning a big party at the house in May and can't wait to show it to family and friends who haven't seen it yet. It will be like a grand opening. We hope everyone loves partying on the deck, on a hot sunny day, while staying cool in the shade under a new Sunsetter Motorized awning. I will be sure to follow up if problems arise. So far, Sunsetter has been easy to communicate with. Maybe I will add an image later on. Smile smile smile.

April 2013 we ordered a 20 ft remote controlled Sunsetter from an authorized dealer for Sunsetter, Nick Breslin of Jenkintown. Promises from Breslin on how the Sunsetter would be installed, etc. The first issue was that he apparently ordered the wrong size, that was delivered and returned; another delivery made but dealer overlooked ordering everything needed. Long story short, installation scheduled for 5/9/13 but after Breslln's installer saw that the awning could not be installed as Breslin promised, as it was too labor intensive so installer said he could only mount it to the fascia and what needed to be done before installing, not enough time left in the day; so another installation date of 5/21/13.
Since the awning could not be hung as promised an aluminum cover was needed and another $450 which was to be split between Breslin and me, since it was his fault the awning couldn't be hung as promised. After the installation was completed, Breslin gave me the final price owed...and denied agreeing to splitting the cost of the awning cover, since there was nothing in writing, etc. After the first rain, I called to advise the awning was leaking against the house keeping us from sitting under it and he advised that the awning is not waterproof but did send out installer to caulk between the fascia board and aluminum awning cover. Breslin commented that the awnings do leak and it's not his problem, etc. and suggested he should charge us but didn't.
Breslin is a recommended dealer but Sunsetter claims they can't get involved with charges, etc. At this time the left lateral arm is drooping down and out at least 3 inches from the other arm. Called Breslin several times, no reply. Called Sunsetter who said they'd contact him and see what could be done. Breslin called and said he'd come out for $200 and I said "the awning isn't even 5 months old, don't you stand behind your installation" and he was abrupt and said he wasn't coming out for every little thing that goes wrong and to go online and to fix it yourself, sort of what Sunsetter suggested as well. I explained that being handicapped keeps me from climbing a ladder, etc. Neither cared. It's OH WELL, hire someone then. I'm angry with myself that I did not investigate before making the purchase and the installer and spending over $3000. I would never recommend Sunsetter nor Breslin.
All feedback is important to us and we appreciate the time you took to tell us about your experience with Breslin's Decks & Awnings. We strive to provide excellent customer service, and regret the experience you've had.

This company is attempting to sell awnings as if they are toasters. Doesn't work in three years... buy a new one! The products they sell are as cheaply made as possible in order to be less expensive than quality custom made awnings. The problem is you don't need a contractor to install a toaster. You don't need a contractor to service a toaster. You don't need a contractor, a packing company and a freight company to return your toaster. Everything that went wrong was excluded by their 5 1/2 page bullet-proof warranty. I had to pay more money to get things covered even when it was under their warranty. After a few years of messing around with this junk, I went out and bought a new awning from an actual awning company that makes and installs their own product. I paid about 30% more for a custom made, high quality awning with American Made Sunbrella fabric. Now I can hear myself think when the awning in use. The new awning doesn't grind, pop and squeak when it's out or while it rolls in or out. The new awning's fabric doesn't sag so bad that it lays on its own hardware. And the nuts, bolts and screws are stainless steel... so they don't rust. Sun Setter buyer beware.

We recently purchased a Sunsetter Oasis about two months ago. I am very disappointed in the product. First off, the free standing option is not an option at all. This awning must be anchored down because it is otherwise unstable. I installed mine on a flat level concrete surface. It was fine until a slight wind came along. Then it wanted to take-off. The actual wind speed when this occurred was I would estimate to be about 10-15 MPH. Needless to say, I anchored it down. However, this is not my major complaint.
A big problem with the Oasis is that it holds rain water. Let me explain. It was a clear sunny day and my wife and I were enjoying our new SUNSETTER OASIS AWNING. We decided to go to a local diner for lunch. While we were away, the weather changed; a mid-day storm came up. We were several miles away from our home. Remembering that I left the awning open, I didn't have any concerns because now that it was MOUNTED DOWN, I was confident it would be okay. WRONG!!
When we returned home, we found the awning full of rainwater. I'm not saying some water, I mean a major amount of water. The water lied in the center of the awning on both sides toward the bottom. The little drain holes in the awning were of no value. The water pooled nowhere near them. By the way, the awning was opened properly with the tension arms bent. The four corners were completely taut. I removed the water with a broom from below the awning, pushing small amounts out until it was almost empty. Then I closed it to remove the remaining water. At that point, the drain holes worked. I re-opened it to let it dry in the sun.
Is this normal ? We can never leave this thing opened if we are not present. This past Father's Day, we were all outside under the awning. A shower came from out of nowhere. You got it, it filled up with water. I don't know what to do!! Are there any fixes? It seems to me that it needs a couple more tension arms toward the center to keep it taut. Or it might need drain holes at a location on it that will actually work. Maybe both. What do I do? This awning was not inexpensive. I'm totally disappointed in this product. I contacted Sunsetter twice so far. I did not receive any response thus far. Very frustrating. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

I had my SunSetter motorized XL model at 18 foot wide by 11 foot 8 inch model installed 3 weeks ago. The SunSetter website states this all lateral arm awning models can be installed at a minimum of 7 foot 6 inches from the deck floor. This is not correct as I found out. We live in South Florida and have a lot of summer rain. Since the awning could not be installed higher than 7 foot 6 inches (our eave/soffit is exactly at 7' 6") we could only place a small pitch/angle on the arms to avoid the awning from being too low in the front. Rain water collected on the fabric since it did not have enough pitch on it, and the awning has now collapsed and is completely destroyed.
I called Sunsetter and they stated they would not help us whatsoever even though the salesperson that sold me the awning said it can used in light rain if installed at 7' 6". So, I decided to do more research online and found out from Retractableawnings.com that 7 foot 6 inches is not enough to allow for rain runoff when using an 11' 8" projection. We had a handyman remove the SunSetter awning and had someone pick it up to recycle the frame. I purchased a much larger awning with a rain sensor for the same area from Retractableawnings.com.
Sunsetter can only make the awnings up to 20 foot wide. The rain sensor automatically closes the awning when it begins to rain to avoid the water collection issue. The high quality Palermo Plus model, advice, information and professionalism I received from Retractableawnings.com was much better than that of SunSetter. Would not buy from or recommend Sunsetter ever!

Sunsetter was a waste of time and good money. This last time the rain got me again, this time it was at 3:00 in the morning and it destroyed the awning and my table and broke the glass on my patio. I cut my feet when I went out to see the damage. I said to myself never again, so I bought a patio cover from AAA Patio covers, and I love it. It was only $1,500 and that included gutters and all, and no worries over rain anymore.

I purchased 6 EasyShades for west-facing windows and installed all of them, some at great peril to myself because of extreme heights. I've had to replace 2 of them for a failure rate of 33%. The first one wouldn't retract all the way. Customer service had me extend it all the way... at which point the shade fell 20 feet to the ground because the glue wasn't properly applied around the roller. The other one rolled unevenly, making it look hillbilly; it's also a gluing issue. The good news is that they did replace the shades.
Other minor issues are: the rivet on the guide cable was not firmly attached - so the cable simply fell out when I installed it; the remote programming is whackadoo; the end-pieces to the PVC cross-bar pop out unless you glue them. For what it's worth, customer service has been trained to say, "I'm truly sorry," before every breath, making them sound soulless and not sorry at all. And while I'm ranting, why do Customer Service outfits feel the need to add on the obligatory finishing epilog? ("Mr. **, is there anything else I can do for you today? No? Well, I'm glad I was able to help you with your 'remote programming problem'. If you have any other issues, please don't hesitate to call us back. I truly wish you a great day,") I'd be far happier if they just said, "Great, thanks for calling." And yes, I do feel better, thank you.

We contacted SunSetter Awnings and received a beautiful brochure with a really nice DVD and a sample swatch of material. After watching the wonderful DVD, we called to schedule their recommended installer whom we were told would call us back in 24-48 hours to schedule a free in home estimate. On day 3, the installer failed to call to schedule an appointment. We called SunSetter and were given their preferred installer's direct telephone number. We were told they dropped the ball in having a preferred installer contact us. We telephoned and spoke with the local installer who advised he had the correct contact information for us and would be calling us back at a later unspecified time during the next coming week.
I did some research and found the local installer has numerous complaints including but not limited to domestic violence charges, traffic violations including driving without a driver’s license, as well as judicial judgments against him. Feeling uneasy about conducting business with this recommended installer, I decided to search further and called another local company for a free in home estimate. If and when the SunSetter preferred installer calls us back, I definitely plan on telling him that we sought other quotes and are no longer interested in a SunSetter Product.

We purchased our manual unit in 2001 and just now, 2013, have to replace our fabric due to a contractor ripping a small hole in it! It is a bear to open and put up with the rain away arches, but it does the trick and has lasted so many years! We installed it ourselves and even purchased the screen room attachment that we had to replace a couple times because our dogs jumped on it repeatedly - ripped the screen part! No problem of the manufacturer... I would recommend this to anyone. All you need to do is install it correctly and take care of it. It has lasted me 12 years so far. I may just patch the small rip instead of replacing the entire fabric.

We bought a SunSetter Oasis from Costco in the summer of 2011. We had it professionally installed in July of 2012. We opened it this spring. It worked once or twice and quit. Now we have a new motor to install (which I had to pay for) the 5-year warranty must be a figment of my imagination and we are trying to figure out how to get it down because I don't have another $350-$500 to get the professionals out again to replace the motor. It's a piece of junk. I really liked it when it worked, which was about 3 months. I won't recommend them ever.

I purchased an electric Sunsetter awning. I had it installed by a professional and reputable company for a total cost of nearly $3,000.00 in the summer of 2007. It was used approximately 20 times between then and 2010, when I had a room addition added to the back of my house. At the end of the summer, the Sunsetter was remounted and reset, and has never worked since. My husband who can fix anything spent hours and hours with the manual and resetting the Sunsetter and trying to get it to work. It needs a new motor, which I will not replace as it was only used a minimal amount of times as noted above due to the extreme heat in the back of the house. It is one of the biggest mistakes I have purchased. I am not going to spend any more money fixing what I consider a piece of junk. I would not recommend them to anyone. A waste of $3,000.00.

I purchased an 18' motorized SunSetter awning. Because of the size and weight, I decided to use an authorized contractor (CAS Contractors in Cedar Run, NJ) found on the SunSetter website. The president of the contractor, Chris Smith, came to my house, showed me samples, and assessed the installation required, then quoted a price. We ordered through the contractor. He would not place the order until our check had cleared. He told us it would be delivered in 4 weeks. It took 8 weeks to get delivered. They installed the awning and then I found that the main rod of the awning was bent. It had to be replaced, which took another month to get.
CAS came back to install the new rod and found that their installer should have mounted the awning brackets on a backboard and not directly to the house. My house has a drivet exterior, which means it has foam below the outside coating. When he installed it directly to the house, the brackets were sinking into the foam. The SunSetter website has installation guidelines, which clearly state that with my type of exterior, a backboard should be installed behind the awning. CAS now wants an additional $250 to install the backboard. The fact that they came to the house to assess the installation did not seem to matter.
When I called SunSetter to complain, all they could tell me was that all their dealers are independent and they have no responsibility for anything their dealers do. Do not use a SunSetter authorized dealer.

I ordered and paid for the Vista model. From day 1, the fabric leaked and tons of water collected on my new wood deck. When I called, prior to making the purchase, the rep told me the fabric was waterproof and was Sunbrella brand. I contacted Sunbrella and they told me the fabric is not Sunbrella brand and it is also not waterproof. Also, the awning cover is cheap and flimsy and does not protect against snow in the winter. The awning cover allows rainwater to drip down between the brackets and the wall. My neighbor has an awning from Retractableawnings.com and is very satisfied with it. I paid less for my Sunsetter and am extremely dissatisfied with this piece of junk. At the end of winter, I plan to remove the Sunsetter, place it in the trash, and replace it with the Palermo Plus model from Retractableawnings.com. I now know that quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten!

I have not seen so many mistakes from a company than SunSetter! SunSetter’s one screw up after another. The biggest problem though is when they’re expecting the customer to pay for it. Here is the unbelievable story: First, they delivered the wrong item. They sent me some 18-feet long aluminum sheets instead of my awning. It took them more than 2 months and many, many phone calls to acknowledge their mistake and replace that with an actual awning. Then they sent me the awning with the motor on the wrong side.
When the $600 per installation installer came in to install it, before he did anything, he informed me about the issue. He asked me to call SunSetter before he touches anything. I called SunSetter right away and I asked them if I should send it back before spending $600 on installation. The customer representative on the phone informed me that she has a cable that can handle the extra 18 feet that I need for the installation. She suggested that I should go on and install it; she will send me the cable right away. I did exactly what I was told by SunSetter customer service and installed it.
She sent me the cable as promised but the cable was too short. I called back and another customer service representative informed me that the previous representative probably didn't know what she was talking about; SunSetter does not make a longer cable. She suggested that I should pay out of my pocket a technician (or do it myself!) and move the motor from the right to the left side. Also, I could buy an extension cable from Home Depot. I was told by my electrician and also the Home Depot guys that connecting the Home Depot’s extension cable to the Sun setter’s cable outside the house is not a 100% secured connection because of the rain and bad weather. I could put my house on fire.
Now, (because of Costco’s customer service) they want to give me a $200 Costco coupon that, according to them, will cover the cost of getting the 200lb awning down, sending it back to them, wait for the new one to arrive, and then hire the same people again to reinstall it. My estimate for that would be over $800. When I asked why they don’t send somebody to my house to take care of it, the customer service lied by saying that there's nobody in my area to do so. They forgot that actually, they recommended 3 companies prior to purchasing this awning to me that are located miles from my house.

After reading all these reviews, believe me SunSetter should stop running all these fake advertising about this piece of crap they are selling with a so-called warranty. I purchased the 20' motorized with remote two seasons ago. Wire is off from the very end of it; and as a result, it’s just sitting there laughing! I contacted customer service and explained it to them. The girl told me I have to fix it myself and it’s a do it yourself project. Hey, people wake up and smell the awning. Do it yourself part was installing it, that’s done. Now, we got a problem with the stupid unit itself. I didn't make this piece of crap. Why do I have to fix it? I paid over $2500.00 for this garbage and now got to pay more to fix it. Beware of these SunSetter people. They are a bunch of crooks just looking to get you. After that you are on your own and that’s the end of warranty - cheap fabric, lousy design, crappy frame, and stupid electrical plan in my case. They put together a masterpiece to rip people off. Good old umbrella from Home Depot is working much better and only costs under $100.00.

I purchased my SunSetter over 4 years ago – easy to install, attractive and provides necessary shade and cooling when working. We purchased the motorized with remote; within 10 months, motor stopped working. We reset, extended, and retracted setting at motor and reprogrammed remote. That did not work. We contacted SunSetter customer service. After heated discussions back and forth, they agreed to honor warranty. It cost me $75.00 to get a new one. It was replaced and worked fine until last month. Motor will extend awning but not retract it. Replace battery, reset limits on motor for extending and retracting, and reprogramming twice… and still it will only extend and not retract.
I'm sure it will cost me full price for new motor, so I will just wait until I'm ready to sell the house in two years. It will be a nice selling feature, but their motorized system is a piece of junk. I can assure you I will not purchase a SunSetter Awning for the new house I am building. Buyer beware! I checked with a friend of mine who had one installed a year ago and they stated they were very dissatisfied with the SunSetter product. After a visit to my friend’s house, I found the awning to be very flimsy and it squeaks when opening and closing and also did not close all the way. I also noticed the corrosion on the frame and assembly bolts. Regardless of my friend's dissatisfaction, I decided to contact the local SunSetter dealer who I discovered on a visit to my home was poorly trained. In fact, he did not have samples of the aluminum frame colors, fabric or any technical information with him. I asked specifically about wind load as our home is on a golf course. We need something strong and durable. I didn't even ask him for a price. Instead, I searched online and considered many vendors.
My choice for my order was retractableawnings.com. I ordered the Palermo Plus model which has a 25 year non-prorated frame warranty. I also checked the BBB record for Retractableawnings.com and it is an A+. The awning is magnificent in terms of quality and adds beauty to our backyard while providing us with excellent sun protection. More expensive than SunSetter but well worth the investment!

If I open it in the morning to avoid the sun baking my master bedroom while I'm away, it always occurs that the awning, due to high winds up high, always closes right up thereby defeating the purpose for me buying the awning in the first place. Original wall mount awning worked great. Dealer didn't listen when we explained a roof mount would be required for relocated install. Delay of a week and replacement ordered. Sunsetter confirmed order 3-4 days later to dealer. Two weeks later, mounts still have not been shipped.
I contacted dealer, who had apparently contacted Sunsetter dealer services and was informed that Sunsetter was 'doing inventory', that the parts had not shipped the week prior (as earlier indicated) and 'might possibly' ship this Friday or maybe Monday (12 December).
I contacted Sunsetter earlier this morning and talked w/ customer service who was quite helpful, but could find no indication of the order or dealer PO under my name, my wife's name, dealer name or dealer owner (Dave **) name, nor had she been informed of any shipping issues due to 'doing inventory'.
I recontacted dealer, who, in turn, re-contacted Sunsetter Dealer Services, whereupon I received a call who explained that customer service could not locate the information because dealer had ordered under their wholesale account. However, Dealer services would not tell me when the order had been placed, would not comment on why after two weeks from order confirmation the part had still not been shipped, and would not confirm when said parts would, indeed be shipped, other than a vague ' probably Friday or Monday'. Moreover, Sunsetter indicated that shipping arrangements could not be expedited.

We are charter members of the Sun Setter Family. We purchased our 16" 900 unit over 10 years ago, possibly 12 years. We have been very happy with the unit. You have to use your head with anything like this as it is a big wind catcher. I always use de-flappers and tie down the ends when it is deployed. We learned this using out motor home. We unroll it in the spring and roll it back up in the fall, so it is a permanent part of our deck as it is great in the sun and rain. It is always tilted on one end to let the rain pour off as it can collapse an awning due to the weight.
My problem with Sun Setter is they do not carry replacement parts. I had a folding handle break. I called them and they basically told me that they do not carry replacement parts so I had to make my own - not a good way to run a company. Also, we just purchased a 6' awning to go over our sliding door and a large rug $200.00 to go under the awning. Very shortly after we purchased them, they went on sale. So, if you are going to buy anything from them, wait. It will probably go down in price shortly.

After reading these stories of disappointment, it makes me sad, but there seems to be a common thread, either it wasn't installed right or you lost respect for what it is and what it can and can't do. We, husband and I, dreamed about a life on the deck like you see in the commercials. The mounting and the assumed cost was intimidating, to be sure. So we put it off. A friend of ours was moving out of state, and he had one and took it down, planning to take it with him. His new house had one so he gave us his old one, which was bought in 1997. We had never seen it up or open. The way we got it, it was rolled and covered with a bag of parts and screws, and two long extender arms. Thankfully, he included the installation book! All stowed in the barn and added to the "We'll get to it" list.
Our deck faces true east. We spent two summers with the sun and the unbearable heat on our deck. We are not construction people, but we do know our way around a toolbox. What put us off is our house is log. Real logs! What would it look like? No two logs are alike, so finding level and flush was answered with good header. Husband and friend had it up in one afternoon. That was four years ago. We absolutely love it! But you have to understand its limitation. We live in the woods so weather is something we monitor. We have had huge trees fall down with the wind gusting to just 25 mph. It's just fabric and screws, like a sail sideways. It's not a roof. We close it if we are going away and cock it when it's going to rain. We collect the rainwater but that's another story. We just love it! Pictures on request.

I purchased this remote SunSetter awning the end of summer 2004, installed it in 2005. The remote feature worked to open and close 4-5 times. When we spoke to SunSetter or help they said the motor must have been exposed to moisture. Well if a product is for outside, isn’t it going to be exposed to moisture, I asked. We don’t live in the desert! SunSetter would not replace the motor. Costco, where we purchased the awning, intervened and we got a new motor. It worked for 3-4 times and my husband was so frustrated he threw the remote out! I would not recommend this product or dealing with this company. Consequences: spent money on a faulty product and shoulder pain from manually cranking!

I'm no handyman, but I installed my SunSetter awning last weekend with no problems. You must follow the instructions to the letter, particularly in regard to installing the brackets into studs or other support beams. I triple checked with a stud finder inside and outside the house before drilling. When you drill a 3 1/2 inch hole into a stud, you'll feel substantial resistance on the drill for the entire distance. If you don't, you're not drilling into a stud. And if you don't put the bolts into studs, the awning will definitely fall down. If in doubt, hire a handyman. Don't blame SunSetter; the instructions are very clear. Some of the descriptions I read here sound like incorrect installations, or maybe studs that were compromised due to rotting or termite damage. I feel like I got a great product from a reliable company, and it's been a good experience so far.

It ripped off the house leaving holes in the siding. All four arms (upper and lower) were damaged and need replaced which will cost around $400.00.

I purchased a home with an awning installed. One afternoon I wanted to drain rain which had accumulated in the center, it was not much water, so I began to lower one corner of the awning and the entire awning separated from the house and fell on me knocking me under it onto the ground, almost killing me.I had bruises all over my arms and legs. I was not even upset about the awning falling down after I realized how lucky I was to still be walking and talking! The original home owners who installed the awning did not provide additional reinforcements to secure the contraption to the house well enough.
A year later I paid someone 250.00 to re-attach the awning to my house. He provided 2x6 planks, primed then he painted them, pre-drilled for 3/4",or so,screws at apx. 8 inch intervals, first he screwed the long board at the top to the studs, not the siding on the house, then two smaller boards lower,to secure the arm brackets. The awning is secure now, but this is the problem I still have. The awning is not sold with instructions for installation well enough to ensure safety. These awnings are very expensive, replacement parts are expensive,it is impossible to leave it out unless the weather is always perfect, and difficult for a single person to open and close as advertised, I can't do it alone and my boyfriend who is 6'4" won't touch it.
While re-attaching the awning the large round tube with the spring action popped loose and almost took my contractors thumb off! Now I can hardly use it because it is so much harder now to open or close because it does not have the spring action, it has to be opened and closed manually, which includes the use of a ladder, clearing the patio, etc. I have been afraid to call to ask how to fix it becase I don't want to spend another 300.00
This thing would be easier to get rid of, and I would like to replace it with a permanent hard structure such as a pergola. If you buy this product be very careful with it. I reccomend to always tilt one end to allow for run-off, pull it in during windy storms, even if mild winds, and add reinforments when installing it.
It completely fell away from the house. I suffered physical injuries as a result. I spent about 350.00 to re-attach it to my house including replacement parts. The phone operator at Sun-Setter sold me parts I didn't even need. It always requires more than one person to operate mine. I am a small woman, my boyfriend is 6'4" and he won't touch it! This entire summer I have not used it. I should be able to use it I spent enough money already on this thing.

Purchased the 20' awning in June 2001. The shipment arrived promptly and apparently in good shape. The video was packed in with the hardware. The video cartridge was cracked, some of the tape was frayed, therefore only some of the tape could be watched. Being a very handy DIYer I did not think to have much problems figuring things out and indeed I did manage to get the entire awning hooked up. There were some difficulties but as a DIYer I solved those.
Out problem is with its basic design. My wife cannot handle the extension, I am having more problems than before with extending the heavy bars that go above your hand reaching height. We should have gotten a motorized or hand cranked item. For the record we have absolutely no difficulty operating the Dometic Awning on our Motorhome.
Very difficult to operate for older people. The awning itself is still working and sheds rain without the stays because we are smart enough to slightly tilt one side lower than the other, causing even heavy (very heavy) rain to slide off, rather than to POOL.

We installed our Sunsetter awning 1 year ago, and had been pleased. That is, until we noticed that the center support brace is rusting. This brace is one of the add on's that SunSetter sells to provide additional awning support. Not only is the entire painted surface rusting, but the spring mechanism is rusting as well. Again, this rusting occured only after 1 year of use. The rubber cap on the unit that is supposed to protect our siding is dried out and cracking too.
We called Sunsetter about these issues, and they offered to sell us touch up paint for $6. Now, realize that this rusting center support would need to be sandblasted, then entirely repainted . Touch up paint WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. We wanted a replacement support, in exchange for ours with the defective paint finish. That would have cost us $50. So, every year we may have to pay $50 to replace this piece so that we don't have to look at a rusted piece of metal over our heads!?
The company said that as long as it still worked, the rust shouldn't be a problem. Now, after only one year of use, if the paint finish on this piece is rusting and is an eyesore, I'm not convinced that the rest of the awning unit won't rust. DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE DID! DON'T PURCHASE FROM THIS COMPANY. I would NOT recommend their products to anyone!
What an eyesore after just one year! We spent around $1300 on thier products, only to have a piece of rusted equipment.

I, along with a friend put mine up in several hours and it was no big deal. That was 8 years ago. I put roll it up in the winter or if there's a big storm. I leave it out all summer long. I've mistakenly left it out when we had strong wind updrafts that did damage to the neighbors with little effect on my awning.
After all these years the UV rays are taking their toll on the fabric but I expect that. Yesterday the arm broke at the base from a stress fracture on the aluminum so I sawed it flush, re-drilled it and bolted it back to the base. This will probably be the last year of life for my awing looking presentable but considering I got 8 or 9 years out of it I would consider buying another one.

When I purchased the awning, I was advised of a finjance free program for the first month and took the offer which put the price on a Wells Fargo credit card. I paid the full price within the month and closed the Wells Fargo Account.
2 months after installing the awning, the motor died. I called Sunsetter and was informed it was under warranty. They would send me a new awning providing that I give them a $50 deposit refundable when I send back the old motor. I gave them my credit card info, recieved the new motor and returned the old one.
When I did not receive my credit I called and was told it was refunded to the old/closed Well's Fargo account. I told them that was not my method of payment, they said they would take care of it. When I received a statement from Wells Fargo with a credit, I called them.
Now 7 months later, Wells Fargo states they sent me a check for the $50and after they sent that Sunsetter retracted their payment to Wells Fargo and I now owe Wells Fargo $64. I was put on with an account specialist who advised me to send a letter to Wells Fargo disputing the charge. I did so 3 times. Wells Fargo resolved the dispute by calling me every 2 hours between 8am and 9PM and threatening me with collections. The account specialist is now advising me to contact my other credit card company, in which the account is now closed and recieve written statement that I was or was not additionally reimbursed through them as well. This same specialist has on numerous occassions done nothing accept put me to work or advise me to pay an additional $50 I do not owe.

Approx 2 weeks ago I was sitting under it on an otherwise calm day when a dust devil caught the left side of the awning causing the arm locking handle to break off which in turn allowed the awning to flip over backwards.
The handle is only held on by 2 very small rivets and I do not believe that there would of been any damage if the rivets had been larger. The handle is located at a high stress point and I am not sure why they are using substandard rivets when the rest of the awning seems to be of such high quality. I discussed this with Sunsetter but they said that it was due to the weather and that they couldn't do anything about it. Sunsetter's failure to try to work with me on this has lost them customers as I will never recommend them or purchase from them again.

I purchased a retractable awning in July of 2004. There is a small plastic cap at the end of the left rafter that holds the tension spring in place by clipping into the rafter with two puny little plastic tabs. The tabs on the left unit were not long enough and they will not hold in the rafter arm. I e-mailed the company explaining this and they told me to call the 800 number to obtain the replacement part.
I did and was told, rather rudely, that the part was not available by itself (after being practically accused of breaking it myself)but must be obtained with an entire new rafter assembly. This assembly is about 12 ft long, steel and fairly heavy. The plastic cap is about 1 ounce, plastic and worth about $.50, if that. I told them I did not want a new rafter, just the cap. Impossible, they say. They offered to send it to me under warranty, but I would have to pay $14.95 shipping. I refuse to pay $14.95 for the unit, when I only need the $.50 cap. After it was installed we realized that the new awning was not the high quality of our old one. The operation was very hard and all the materials in the arms and brackets were much lighter than the old one. We also realized that in our windy climate it would not last one season.
We had our old Sunsetter for six years and had no problems with it until it was destroyed in the severe storm. We purchased this on the telephone from one of Sunsetters salesman who told us that this model replaced the old 1000 model and it was a much improved product which proved to be false. The components of the new awning had been downsized and were made of smaller gauge materials.
The same day it was put up we called customer service and told them we wanted to return the awning and get a refund of our money. They said they would refund our purchase price less the shipping to and from our house back to them which amounts to approximately $200.00. We do not think we should have to pay the freight for an inferior product that was represented as a better awning than we had previously had. When we called customer service they were rude and argumentative and said that it was stated in their literature that the customer has to pay the freight both ways when returning the awning. We did not have any literature as we ordered this over the phone. The salesman said we could return the awning but did not say anything about who would have to pay the freight.
Their customer service representative said we should have asked the salesman about the freight. We do not think it is incumbent on the purchaser to ask sales reps about returned item freight as this awning was represented to be a superior product than the one we had. It is not our fault that the awning is an inferior product.
We had to pay $200.00 for a inferior product we could not use.

We purchased a 12x17' Sunsetter awning late summer of 2003. Shipping was good. Installation was comparatively simple although the overall weight and size of the components made the system essentially impossible for a pair of elderly people like me and my wife to cope. It was necessary to hire help from a professional carpenter to complete the installation.
About a month after installation, while trying to lower the awning, the load got away from me and one of the major compnents -a support arm - was bent. Sunsetter did replace this arm under warranty.
But the latest event was more serious. Third week in April we suffered a 3 rain fall in little more than an hour. This meant that water accumulated between the rainaway arches, which are supposed to anable the awning to cope with rainfall, and the total accumulation was so great that the whole system collapsed. And now the system is stuck in the up position and cannot be lowered. The reaction of customer service was to the effect that this sort of thing happens. To give the company whatever due is possible, they are going to replace the broken parts at shipping costs.
But the primary complaint that we heave is that this is has turned out to be an awning for sunny windless days only - essentially any kind of adverse weather is to be avoided by retracting the awning.
Also, retracting the awning, despite the glowing advertisement, is not easy or quick, and is NOT a simple two person job.

The video showed a well-dressed couple easily installing and operating what I soon discovered was a rube-goldberg, delicate, heavy and hard-to-operate contraption.
Contray to the video and printed operating instructions, it took three people--not two as protrayed--and considerable upper-body strength--to raise and retract the awning. In the course of normal operation, hinges and sliders popped out of place. The Rainaway Arches could not be installed; Tensioning the arches caused the entire awning to collapse because of the hinges popped out. The sand bags provided to crudely hold down the screens were so poorly designed that sand leaked out continously, creating a mess on my deck.
When I at first complained to SunSetter, their response was to offer to SELL me replacement parts.
