What is Stannah Stairlifts?

Stannah Stairlifts is a company offering stair lifts in 47 states and Washington, D.C. It sells straight and curved stair lifts for indoor use.

Stannah has over 150 years of experience with making people’s lives easier and giving them back their independence. Its team has won nine industry awards for its safety and health practices.

How does Stannah Stairlifts work?

With Stannah, you have the option to purchase, rent or rent to own a curved or straight stair lift, depending on your needs. For the most part, the right one for you depends on the shape of your staircase and the weight limit required.

Stannah’s purchase process starts with you getting a quote either online, over the phone or through an in-person consultation. If you decide to buy, Stannah will later install your stair lift for you.

You have the option to purchase directly from Stannah or from one of its authorized dealers. Dealers set their own prices and package options. In some cases, you may come out ahead through a dealer, while buying direct is a better option at other times.

Stannah stair lift models

Stannah offers the following models at the time of publishing:

  • The Starla: The Starla is Stannah’s most customizable model — it comes in a range of upholsteries and light or dark wood trim. It also features a call button, which allows you to press a button and have the chair come to you, and safety sensors to keep the chair from running over obstructions or taking off before you’re fully seated.
  • The Siena: Stannah designed the Siena with space in mind. This compact model works well in narrow staircases, and its curved seat back helps keep riders comfortable. The armrests are slightly longer than ones in other models for added support, and the seat is also slightly wider. A retractable seat belt fits into the arms of the chair.
  • The Sadler: The Sadler model is designed for people with limited flexibility. It’s a stand-up chair meant to be leaned against, so there isn’t as much weight on your back, hips and knees. The seat is height-adjustable for comfort and non-slip for extra safety. It also produces gentle support beneath the cushion when you sit down and straightens your back by tilting up slightly when you stand up.

Stannah Stairlifts cost

Stannah doesn’t publish its prices online, so you’ll have to get a quote from the company for exact pricing. You can get a quote by having a Stannah representative come out to your home, calling the company or answering some questions on Stannah’s website. These quotes include the cost of installation.

Stannah does publish some general pricing info you can use as a guideline, though. According to Stannah, you can expect a straight staircase stair lift to cost anywhere from $3,400 to $5,500, with most purchases in the $3,500 to $5,000 range. Curved staircase stair lifts cost between $8,500 and $14,000.

These prices may be intimidating, but financing options are available. If you only need a stair lift for a limited time, consider a rental.

I'm 83, and I walk 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day with a dog. But at my age, I don't do stairs anymore. I can't walk up and down the stairs without holding on to the railing and going backwards. So, I needed a stairlift. There was an ad for Acorn stairlift, but when I looked online, the Stannah people had the best reviews of any company that I saw. I called them, and I was very impressed by the individual who gave us the bids. He was phenomenal. He knew more about stairlifts in his little finger than I know in my whole body.

The two people who installed the stairlifts were professional, courteous, and clearly knew what they were doing because we've been using the stairlifts ever since they left. They fit the stairwell well and don't take up too much room, so people can still walk up and down the stairs without any problem. I use them to go up and down the stairs, and they're a wonderful addition to my home.

We called Stannah to get a price to see whether we could get a stairlift or a stair elevator. We went with a stairlift because we have a nice, wide staircase. We could have put an elevator in because we also have a space where we could do that. But when looking at the price difference between a stair chair and an elevator that works just as efficiently, we went with a less expensive item. The stairlift works beautifully. The only reason I use it right now is to bring laundry downstairs to the first floor, and then take it back upstairs. But it saves my back and the potential of falling. So, we use it for something that's really not getting our physical bodies up and down the steps. The only complaint I have is that we were supposed to get paperwork for the possibility that you could get a rebate on tax. Also, If we sell the house, that guarantee and everything goes with it, but we'd like to have proof of purchase and the paperwork that goes with it.

We had a new Stannah stair lift installed on April 14, 2026. This has been one of the most pleasant experience We ever had from the beginning until end. The entire team beginning with Paul ** as the sales contact, Ryan as the program manager, Greg as the installation tech and the service tech, whose name I failed to record, were all a pleasure to deal with. They were all professional, knowledgeable courteous and patient. They made sure that we fully understood and were comfortable with the answers to our questions. The installation was well planned and executed. The work area was well protected from the construction impact and the space never showed any hint of disruptive activities.

The service organization maintained the same mode of operation. As described above and their response was immediate and effective. In summary, we are very happy with the Stannah selection and feel assured that should the need arise, sometime in the future, they will be the once we will deal with. Thanks for the help. Reviewed June 16, 2026

I looked on the internet and I saw that ConsumerAffairs recommended Stannah Stairlifts. So, I made an appointment to talk to them. We have two flights of stairs going up, so the stairlift that we got goes straight up, makes a curve at the bottom, and goes around the newel post. Then it goes up the stairs, makes a curve around the landing, and curves to go up the second half of the staircase. And then it curves at the top, so that when my wife gets off it, she's not facing the stairs, but facing the hallway and can therefore be safer.

Stannah's sales guy was very professional. His name was Jonathan and I watched him do what he was going to do to measure everything. He did it with a lot of technology, so that they could get the measurements correctly. He talked to me about the cost for a brand-new setup, and one that would be a reconditioned chair. But the railing going up requires a custom built stairlift. It would have cost somewhat less if we got a reconditioned stairlift, and Jonathan offered me $1,500 off as an incentive to do that one, but that one was very straight up while my wife couldn't take two straight stairs up. He also told me that there's a three-year warranty on the seat and one year on the motor. So, he made clear what the benefits were and what the cost differential was because of the customization, and of getting something brand new.

Other than that, the stairlift has a relatively low noise level. The highest noise level is when the foot platform comes down because when you release it, it just comes down and goes whack. Not on somebody's feet though, because my wife is good about keeping her feet out of the way. All in all, I was very satisfied with Jonathan. He was very responsive early on when we were going through the process of setting things up, and he tried to be responsive later. We spoke again when the machine had an issue. It would go two stairs worth of distance and stop, then it’d go two stairs and stop, two stairs and stop. So, it took a long time to go up and a very long time to come down. Then, when it reached the end of the road, on the top or the bottom, it started to beep. And it would have beeped all night had I not just shut it off.

When I called for service, my fantasy was that they were going to be right there the next day. I spoke to them on Tuesday and they couldn't get to me until Friday late afternoon. Then they called me up Friday morning and the person who was going to work on the machinery called in sick, so there was nobody to come on said day. I asked them on the phone if was there somebody who could do overtime to come and do it as quickly as possible, and they brought someone in the next day who came on time and was very diligent in finding out that the whole problem was all about. It turned out that a nut fell off of a bolt that regulated some of the workings of the machinery.

So, I was unhappy about how long it took to get somebody to the house. Everybody has one of these in the house, not because they're a fun ride, but because somebody in the household can’t do the stairs. Going up and down the stairs for my wife is very painful. She has arthritic feet, and she has had two hip replacements. She’s 82 years old, going to be 83 years old in two months, and at that age, you get cranky about what you need and you want it immediately. But the fellow that they sent out, Leo, traveled about an hour and a half from New Jersey to do this job on Saturday. He was right there with the machinery and he knew what he was doing. After he found the problem, he went back to find the part that fell off to confirm that that was what was lost, and he found the nut in the washer that fell off of this bolt.

He set it up, then when he checked it, he had to do some adjustment. He spent another 15 minutes doing adjustments on the curve at the bottom and working his way up. He was terrific, very personable, and a great representative for the company, if he works directly for the company. If he doesn't, he's someone I would recommend them to use whenever they can. All in all, the sale was very up and straightforward. The installation was very professional and the work that Leo did was very professional.

I purchased the stairlift for the purpose of my husband's use. However, when Stannah first put it home, they had to remove one of the bars, and he wanted the bar replaced. He hasn't been able to use it yet, because he's had a lot of issues with falls. But I've used it to carry things and it has served that perfect. When they did the sales visit, the reps were very polite. At the same time, it was very, very nice, very pleasant, and very helpful. I appreciated that. I appreciated the fact that we got it corrected in time. There was one issue, which I did not realize because of the refund. I had to correct that, and I sent the correct amount that it needed to be replaced, so that worked out.

Stannah had another stairlift, which was going down, and that was ridiculous. It was taking up almost the entire staircase going down. So, I was within my time that I could ask for a refund. I told them I wanted that taken out entirely. I didn't want it. They did put the one going upwards, which we still have. They put it close into the wall because of the position it was in, which was making it difficult to go up. So, they did that. I was just a little disappointed. Because of what I saw in the photographs, the salesperson made it look simpler. It was all against the wall, and it did not. The appearance was not correct in my view. I was dissatisfied with that.

I think the actual machines are well constructed. One issue I didn't like, is that when the stair lift goes to the top of the stairs, it swings around at the top and does not swing around with the step on it.

However, I find it a little complicated for my mother at her age, but it's because it has a midway stop. There's really no way around that. I am very happy with the product myself. Everybody we've talked to who knew anything about stairlifts said Stannah is the stairlift to get. So far, it's worked very well. But if anything is frustrating, it's how slow it goes. Especially when it's being called up and down and not being used. But it's safe, and it's easy to use. It gives my wife access to a floor she couldn't get to in our home. It's wonderful. It does take up some room, though. But it's manageable. It was expensive. But it was worth it for the benefit that we got.

Our experience with Stannah has been very good. It was installed very well, promptly, and quickly. The people I dealt with in the installation were incredibly good, very friendly, and very polite. They did a great job. I also like that they have a significantly large office in Nassau County, which was reasonably close to me, and you want people who are close by in case there's a need. The stairlift works very well. It's a good product, expensive, but you're buying quality.

We went with Stannah because they seemed to be a good company, and they're American. Their presentation was good too. The stairlift we had installed goes straight up and down inside our home and we've had no problem. Overall, Stannah was good, except their installer was slow.

The sales rep and the installation of the stairlift were excellent. I would recommend Stannah.

Of the two representatives that came here, the Stannah one had an idea for enlarging the bottom landing that I thought was a good one. I liked the guy who came out first and the advice he gave. My wife needed the stairlift. It allows her to get up the stairs when she comes home. She uses the stairs to go down.

We went with Stannah Stairlifts because of the program where we could pay half and wait six months to decide if we're going to need it longer or not, as opposed to Acorn where we just had to pay upfront. The installation was fine. Very nice young man. And the product is great. We explained to friends why we went with Stannah. We would have gone with Acorn if they had offered this same deal, because they were fine to deal with before, but they don't offer rentals anymore, and that's why we turned to Stannah. It's not one product over another. It was the financial aspect of it.
