Two year old Maytag Washer would'nt spin clothes (left clothes soaking wet). A&E Factory was sent by Maytag. Reed (Repairman) came out was told what codes the machine gave, he went down looked at it (didn't have flashlight) went out to his truck to call his boss (3 times). Told me it would be over $500 to fix. I explained that the machine was only two years old, then the price came down to $144, then he went out to his truck to talk to his boss again. Then came in and told me I had to pay for everything up front, and I was not told that there would be any costs involved by Maytag or when they confirmed the appointment.
So I told him there would be no payment today, eventually he said that there was a $65 charge for him diagnossing the problem (I already knew the motor was shot) he told me that Maytag pays for the motor, but I have to pay for service. The drain hose was also cracked inside the machine - how can a drain hose crack if it is never moved? Why isn't covered by Maytag? I wanted to charge me an additional $50 for the hose. Then on the receipt it says that I am being charged for a Motor Pulley - the parts were sent to my home and there is no motor pulley in there. It took more than a week after three calls to get the part delivered and now I have been without a wash machine for two and a half weeks. The total cost of repairs is $124.00, not including the drain hose which will be another $55.00. Plus the out of pocket expense of going to the laudry mat (gas for the car, cost of the washer at the laundry mat, etc).
Cost of time, out of pocket for laudry being done at laundry mat, gas for having to go to laundry mat, drain hose $55.00 plus the $124 for repairs.

I have owned the dryer for less than two years. Had a short within the dryer and shorted out the plug and outlet. I was told by Maytag that if I wanted a service call it would cost me $65 + just to send someone out. They should take this report seriously; I could have loss my house. I have owned other Maytags before and never had a problem with them. I was surprised that the company was not interested in what happened to me.
Now I will have to buy a new dryer and pay an electrician to repair the outlet the old dryer was plugged into. I am just guessing at a cost - $600 - $800

I, too, have a Maytag Neptune washer purchased in early 2003. The class action suite has been settled but that doesn't help me. I've got mildew, stagnant old water, and a wretched smell.
I am alergic to mold and cannot get rid of it. Using bleach splatters on colored clothes. This is not why I bought a Maytag.

I have a Maytag Neptune front load washing machine that was purchased from Karl's in 2003 (model #MAH6500AWW). At the time of purchase, nothing was said about problems with it. Nothing has ever been said. I complained about the smell sometime after we purchased it and was told nothing was wrong with it. Over the last year, the smell has gotten worse. I figured it wasn't draining all the water out so I called Karl's to come look at it today, May 3, 2008. The repairman again told me that nothing was wrong with it and he didn't even indicate that there was a problem with these machines developing mold. He told me the smell comes from the clothes left in it! I don't leave wet clothes in it! I became so frustrated with the guy that I just turned around and walked away.
I then got on my computer because I have heard of problems with these machines and started to research. Bingo! There is a mold problem with the exact model number we have! I realize it is five years old, but the problem has been ongoing for that long and why were we not ever notified by Karl's and why don't they acknowledge it now? Instead, they blame me!
We purchased a Maytag dryer from Karl's, too, a few years ago and my call was to fix that also. I have been using only one setting for a year because the other settings wouldn't cool down or stop when they were supposed to. Now, the last setting stopped working right and I told the person that when I called. Yet, they were not prepared to fix it. Now I have to wait for a piece to come in for the timer. The most frustrating is the washing machine because they won't even acknowledge the problem.

I purchased my Maytag Neptune top loader Machine in November 2004 along with the Maytag drying center. Within a few months the lid of the washer had to be replaced due to rust dripping on the clothes and leaving spots. When the repairman came he said it was the worst machine on the market. This was the repairman's second trip to my house since the drying cabinet was delivered cracked beyond repair upon delivery from the store. After replacing the lid, within a few months the new lid rusted and I gave up.
When I called, numerous times to the Maytag repair line, I was told to use he detergent, and that I should run an empty cycle at least once a week of clorox to keep down mold and mildew and that this would help the rust problem. I got so upset one time I wrote an email to the company to complain about the machine and the rude service people at the repair call center. I never received any follow-up.
Four weeks ago after cleaning the gross black mold from the inside gasket and running two cycles of clorox, I awoke the next morning to an awful smell from the washer. Since I was in a hurry to catch a plane out of town, I poured a cup of clorox in the bottom of the washer, left the lid up and left home. When I returned 48 hours later, I was met at the door by a disgusting stinch. It smelled like raw sewage. The smell was coming from the washer and there was nothing left to do but drag it to the garage. My very expensive washer is still sitting in the garage as I try to decide what to do with it.
My husband purchased a new GE washer (much less money) and our clothes are finally clean. I have literally spent hundreds of dollars on designer towels for my home, only to have to throw them out after a few months due to the musty, mildew smells left in them by the nasty washer. I no longer am puzzeled by the black flakes on my clothes since I now know it was mildew from the washer. How do I know this? The inside of the washer has lots of dried blak mildew flakes and has had for a very long time. I will never, never buy another Maytag product! It is one thing to have a defective product but more serious than that is the fact that I was repeatedly ignored and belittled by the Maytag help line. Maytag has done nothing to resolve mine and others, problems with their faulty machines. My only hope is that someone will bring a law suit against them and one day we could receive some recourse.
Economically, I have lost hundreds of dollars in expensive towels, and now I have had to replace a 3 year old expensive washing machine. Not to mention that I am left with the thing sitting in my garage, wondering what to do with it. Then there are the countless waste of time on the phone with the help center.

This is the second night in a row that our Maytag Neptune Washer has popped open full of water flooding our home! I called Sears where we bought the machine and was informed that I should have been told when I bought the machine that Maytag's washers are no good. I google our model and come to find out that there has been a class action lawsuit for mold (of which our washer doesn't really smell all that great and was sort of curious as to why), defective latch (of which ours is obviously defective as it has failed two nights in a row!
To make things better, we come to find out that there are class action lawsuits, settlements, recalls and the like for our make and model yet we were never notified! In addition, we purcahsed the machine on 1/12/05 and amazingly none of the recalls or settlements involve those dates! Very frustrating. Now due to the amount of water dispensed into our home, I have not towels and no washer to wash them in.
Our wood flooring has been soaked two nights in a row, is starting to seperate because there is no way to draw out the water without removing the floor. Our brand new carpets that were installed two months ago have now been afected and the pad is wet as well as the carpet.

Also the washer keeps going out of spin i have had them several times come out and adjust the feet but it doesnt help its so far out of spin now i cant even go threw my garage door anymore.
Also there has been so many times when i will wash something and it stops in the middle of a cycle and won't finish the wash and i can't use the delicate or hand wash cycle because if i do it leaves little bits of wet smeared dirt on my clothes everytime we use that cycle and its getting to the point where its doing it now on the other cycles also. I purchased a top load Maytag Neptune washer in July 2004. All was well until lately when the machine would not complete the final spin on small loads. I called a reputable local repairman to fix the problem. I was told that I have one of the worst washing machines out there. The bearing is going. And my repairman said he would not even fix it. He told me to run it until it dies, and then buy a Speed Queen washer. He also said that right after the bearing goes, then the transmission will go.
After reading all the entries on this website, I feel fortunate to only have paid $78.70 for this advise. I am appalled that a once reputable company like Maytag would sell such a sub-standard machine like the Neptune series and bill it as innovative and top of the line, with a price tag to match, and then just leave the consumer high and dry with no recourse to recover costs, or replacement. At one time Maytag was the product to buy. I can assure everyone that this household will NEVER purchase another MAYTAG, or related conpany product. I do hope that in the future we all will have some recourse against this serious consumer offense.
I had to buy my Maytag on credit when I purchased it but felt that it was worth it because it was truly an investment in a machine that would last a long time. 3+ years is not a long time.

Then it would either not start tumbling. Now it's Saturday morning & the machine has just stopped stopped completely, with a loud of wet , dirty clothes in it!
Very unhappy with Maytag & this Neptune, now. We're empty nesters, & travel a lot. I only do abt 2 loads of laundry a wk when we are in town. I owned 2 high end Kenmores, that gave many yrs(1 for 16) of hard use. When my children were at home,I was doing tons of laundry each wk. Now I wish I would have just kept my perfectly functioning 10 yr old Kenmore instead.

I purchased a Maytag Neptune Front Loading Washer in 2000, from a Sears Store in San Jose, Ca. I started noticing a moldy odor on my clothing which I traced to the washing machine. I was told by the Maytag company to wash the washer out with detergent and bleach on a regular basis. I never close the door between washes. Over the past 8 years I have dealt with this problem, believing that I had no other recourse. Today I was researching other washers because I am sick and tired of this problem.
I came upon this website in my search. I see that the class action suit was filed and determined in 2005. I was not notified of this, perhaps because I moved in 2002. Is there anything I can do about this now, or is it too late?

There was a class action case a couple of years ago against the Maytag washer-dryer I bought back in 1998,but which has in the past ouple of years given me problems with mildew around the inner gasket, terrble odor from the inside of the washer barrrel and the necessity of washing down the washing machine itself, and scraping the remaining mildew off the gasket, with bleach once a month - and now it just doesn't work at all anymore!
The technician who came to inspect it told me that it would cost me over 500.00 dollars to fix without guarantee that it would work as new. He also told me about the past class action suit against this particular Maytag item and suggested that I contacted you for help. Is there anyway I can file a claim now despite that the cutoff date was in 2005 as I see in your article? In 2005 I didn't yet have this kind of problem, so I couldn't honestly have taken advantage of the suit, I thought I got lucky and had a healthy machine, therfore there was no need.Little did I know the problem would eventually hit me too. Was money placed apart for customers like me experiencing the problem later instead of sooner?

Never had new appliances-- or a new home-- in my whole life. So, when I finally was able to purchase a new home, I wanted only the best and got Maytag everything. That included the Laundry Center drying system (a true gem!) and the top-loading Maytag Neptune. Baaaaaad choice on the washer.
The clam-shell theory seemed sound-- wouldn't experience ripped or stretched clothes around a center agitator. Well, I can't even get the washer through a spin cycle without it going out of balance-- I always have to add 3 or 4 dry towels to help sop up the water as it enters the spin cycle so the weight is more evenly distributed and it will finally go in to the water extract then spin. I would NEVER recommend a Neptune clam-shell washer to anyone. It cost a fortune and has been nothing but one problem after another from the beginning. Purchased with my new house on March 15, 2005 and never heard a word about pending litigation against Maytag. Live and learn.
1st) Must leave the lid open or the washer becomes musty smelling. 2nd) Right out of the shoot, the pump needed to be replaced. 3rd) The clam-shell design doesn't appear to support loads where the weight may not be distributed evenly at all times-- goes off balance before it can extract water and spin. . . I've had to baby the machine, and coax it through a cycle, more than once spending 45 minuted to get it to extract and spin. Pain in the neck, not to mention a time eater.

My in-laws received a Maytag washer as a gift about 3 years ago. It's a Neptune front loader. This past year, I started doing their laundry, as they are elderly. I noticed mold on the gasket and mold odor. I called Maytag and found that the recall had expired. Prior to this, I thought Maytag was the best of machines. Not any more. Their customer service told me to leave the door open. I can't do that, as the digital lights cannot be turned off. I'm afraid I'll short out the washer's brain.
I have to run a wash with bleach every week. It cuts down on the mold, but doesn't completely eliminate it. Waste of water and electricity.

I purchased a Maytag Neptune top-loading washing machine in June 2005. It is now sitting in the barn (protected by the box that the new washer came in) and the only reason it wasn't hauled away for salvage is because I hope to get some satisfaction from the Maytag company.
From what I've read I suspect that isn't going to happen but I can hope that they will stand behind their product. I have replaced it with a Speed Queen on the recommendation of the appliance repair person who declared it dead.
The machine will not spin out in the final rinse. To fix this (sounds awfully simple to me) would cost approximately $550 which is close to half of what I paid for it in the first place.
I was hesitant to spend that much but I was going on Maytag's promise that this was cutting edge, best of the best and (I thought) would surely last me the rest of my life (I'm 64). Rest assured that is the last Maytag product I will ever purchase.

We took possession of a Maytag Neptune TL on August 18, 2005. In May 2007 we began experiencing problems with the washer not draining properly. We contact the dealer that sold us the washer and they foward our service request to a repair service. From the period to May 2007 through September 2007 we waited for two repair companies to get the washer up and running. They bascially replaced every component in the washer including the clutch, computer circuit boards, and cables. At this time I also purchased an extended warranty on the washer from Maytag Dependability Plus for about $153.00.
From September 2007 through February 2008 the washer operated properly. On February 27, 2008 we began experiencing the same problems with the washer again. This time we contacted the Maytag Dependability Plus Service Net and they dispatched a service repairman. After four visits and replacing all the computer boards and related parts they have deemed the washing machine unrepairable and have offered a buyout of $240.25. They arrive at this amount by taking the retail price of the washer and deducting all the cost associated with attempting to repair the washer.
We paid the retail price of the washer which was $950.00, we paid an additional $152.82 for an extended warranty, and we paid $120.00 in repairs for items not covered under the warranty or service agreement. The insult is that we have been without washer for almost 8 months and the only want of offer us $240.25 as a buyout.

We purchased our Maytag washer in Jan. 2005 from Conn's. The model number is SAV4655EWW and serial number is 13185880ET. Understand, that our problem is not with Conn's, but with the service contract we purchased right before the warranty expired with Conn's. The reason for purchasing the Maytag Dependability Plus service contract is because our washer started to give us problems within months of ownership. I called Conn's, and they sent out a repairman. The machine had to be taken in for repair. When it was returned, we were advised to purchase the service contract just as a precautionary measure. We had to call the for service about 3 times. Each time it was something different that the washer was doing or not doing. The second to the last call we made, the repairman said that we may need to replace the washer because it just can't be repaired. I waited about 2 weeks before someone finally called us back. What we were told is as follows.
Leeann Duggins with the settlement department of Service Net said that they are evaluating the claim, and we would be notified shortly. A week later, I called back to find out if any one is coming out to look at my washer, since they had not called me back. We received a faxed letter requesting the buyout of the service contract of $78.02 and may even at its option keep the unrepairable product. [Of course, the letter has more detailed information and if you consider on helping us, I would gladly fax a copy of this letter to you.] My question also is: Why were we never told that we can only make 3 maintenance requests? If that's the case, then, why wasn't the washer repaired correctly, and/or why didn't the repairman tell us that the service contract we have may no longer be valid? We purchased the contract in good faith, thinking that we would probably really never have to use it--because Maytag has the reputation of nothing ever going wrong with its products.
But,we were confident that we had a 'back-up' so to speak with this service contract just in case it did....AND it has. I am still able to use my washer, but it makes a very loud and screeching noise while the washer is on. I have also noticed a burning smell--like rubber. The offer of this Contract buyout expires April 20th. I pray that you contact us regarding our issue with the service contract. I even called Maytag and tried to explain to them our situation. The young lady I spoke to hung up on me because I was insisting on talking to someone in charge and who could understand our problem with the service contract that Maytag deals with. My husband also sent them a letter stating that WE DO NOT AGREE in entering into the agreement for the purpose of settling. He requested that Service Net have our Washer repaired immediately or replaced under the No Lemon Guarantee stated in paragraph 13 of the Service Contract Comprehensive Coverage. [I can also fax a copy of this letter to you. Our Certificate of Coverage number is: TC0097620616.] We also have a contract on our Dryer. We paid about $99 for each product, and the contract expires in Jan. of 2009.
We just want our washer repaired or replaced--preferably, replaced. I think we just got a bad washer and hoped each time that the service repairman came out, would be the last time. They are not coming back to repair. We filed 3 claims and didn't even know that we had a 'lemon'--and a repair limit. We certainly appreciate your consideration in looking into this. No one else has been able to help us. I just find this so hard to accept, regarding the treatment of this service contract and Maytag, "The Dependability People".

They (Empire Magtag) have replaced every thing in the washer, even claiming all the problems were caused by a wrong drainage hose. I replaced it; then they told us to only wash small loads. After $1,080 in repairs, it's still the same. The manufacturer's warranty ran out, and the extended warranty provider won't honor the remaining three years on their warranty. So I'm now trying to get that premium returned. Magtag owns a number of other brands, Whirlpool etc., so I don't know what to replace it with.

In Jan 06 we purchased a brand new Maytag Neptune washer and dryer from Home Depot. The dryer was defective the minute we brought it home. We did not even get one load of clothes done. It would not heat. We called Home Depot and told them we would be returning it the next day and they told us it was a 'special order' and they could not help us, we would have to contact the manufacturer directly. I called Maytag and explained that I no longer wanted the dryer and they refused to give us a refund. They said they could have a repairman out to 'take a look' in about a week or so. The repairman had to order 5 BRAND NEW parts for our BRAND NEW DRYER.
It worked for about 6 months until we started hearing a horrible noise and clothes were taking forever to dry. The repair man returned only to order another defective part...THE DRUM which took weeks to be delivered and then when it was, it was damaged. We waited another few weeks and finally the drum was replaced. BUT, here we are 9 months later and the lining of the drum is coming off and it has ruined a load of white clothes by leaving black marks on them. We again called Maytag and were told that we could have service but our warranty has expired so we would need to pay for parts and labor. We will not be doing that, the dryer is sitting in the garage. Thank goodness we had stored our 'old' Kenmore dryer from Sears. We are using it now and it is perfect! Oh, and the washer does stink!

I also have a Maytag (mah5500bww). I purchased in '05 and no major problems until lately. It is not drying clothes all that well (resulting in replacing belt on dryer), puddles of water, and now seems I have to replace the cheaply constructed rubber boot and the smell on about every 2 or 3 loads. Then I read about a recall, so I run some bleach through it. Now every 2 or 3 loads the smell is worse. I mean gaging to the point of tossing the clothes. So should I bite the bullet and purchase another washer and take this one target practicing ($1200 target)? I have purchased used washers for my rentals that have lasted longer than this.
I am out a new belt $20, new clothes unknown, and time.

I bought the Maytag Neptune Top Loader washer in May of 2005. My wife and I had just bought a new home and were willing to invest the $1000 on a Maytag waher. Supposedly it was the best Sears had at the time. I thought it would be our last purchase with a washer.
The Maytag Neptune TL started shaking uncontrollably during the spin cycle and would give the DC fault code. The first repair guy put in a new clutch. It worked for 13 days. The same thing happened--would not spin--it would start then start slamming into the dryer then try to reset over and over. A second repair guy put in a tub stabilizer sensor. This lasted 4 days, and then it had the same problem. The repair guy who made the second repair came back and spent two hours on the phone with Maytag's tech line and his boss. He could not repair the machine. No matter what he replaced, it continued to not spin the clothes out. My home warranty company replaced my washer with a replacement worth $500, but I still feel cheated by Maytag and Sears after reading everything on this web site.

In 2005 we purchased a new top load Maytag Neptune. The cost was $1100. Within the first six months we went back to Quality Appliance and complained about the how the wash finished. Our clothes were wrinkled, and in order to get the wrinkles out after all cycles and temperatures, we have to put them in the dryer for about 5 minutes to get them unwrinkled. The sales person told us that with the new regulations that all new washers would do the same thing and made a few suggestions of what we could try. We were also told to call Maytag. Unhappy, we went home and continued to put our clothes in the dryer after each load. In 2007 our water pump began to leak. We had it replaced, but we find that it still leaks on and off. Now in 2008 we have had a repairman out twice because after 2 or 3 loads we get an OD code. We have paid over $300 this time, for a service call and a new board. Thinking the problem was solved, I washed clothes again; and lo and behold, after three washes I get and OD code again!
We called Quality Appliance to tell them what is going on and tell them that we do not want to put more into the washer. They tell us they will send out a different repairman. We end up getting the same repairman, but he decides (after calling Maytag, for the 3rd time) that he should replace the lid locks. He told us if this does not work, he will have to order another board because if a lid lock is bad it will destroy the board! We are in the process of selling our home, and we are fed up with sinking money into our washer! We will need to buy all new appliances for the new home because with the housing market as it is, we have been told that buyers expect to have all the appliances in the home. We have been brand-loyal and have owned Maytag appliances of all different types, but this experience has changed our mind. We will never buy a Maytag washing machine again!

Last repair tech says all the Neptunes do this, that they're simply not well designed, that Sears knew about this before we bought it as the product was subject of prior litigation. My husband and I purchased our Maytag Neptune Washer in 2005 MAH8700. We purchased this model thinking the price we paid would reflect the quality of the machine...WRONG! We have had issue after issue with our washer. It first started in April of 2007 when we would constantly get an error of dc or SUDS. This required us to empty the washer and redistribute the clothing. Most of the time we would have to take over half of the clothes out of the washer, close the door, turn the washer back on and complete the load with a straight rinse and extract cycle. This was the only thing the washer would do in order to ring the clothes out. In November of 2007 the washer suddenly started bouncing all over my laundry room along with making a loud clunking noise.
Now we have no other choice than to wash EVERY load as a Quick Wash with a maximum of 4-10 pieces, depending on the weight of the items. Seems a bit ridiculous to pay as much as we have for this piece of equipment, and the best wash we can get on every cycle is a quick wash. I wish so badly we would have done research before we bought this washer as WE DEFINITELY WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED IT. We never received any info on product recalls either. After reading all of the complaints on this site, I am just astonished that time after time the complaints are all the same! I will not buy another Maytag product due to this. I guess my question is...where does this leave all of us that have these outrageously priced units that barely work?

After several years of frustration in dealing with my Maytag Neptune MAH5500BWWW from Kennedy-Hahn in Waunakee, Wisconsin, I was not able to remedy any long-term solution to a problem that I have been having with this washing machine since the date it was purchased. The problem with this washing machine is two fold:
1. The washing machine has a terrible odor that keeps reappearing. When I first noticed this odor, I contacted the company and a representative indicated that I should run bleach through it a couple of times a year and include a cup of Cascade Complete to remedy this. I have done this several times a year and the odor just keeps getting worse. More recently I have paid for a repair person (American of Madison, Wisconsin) to look at the unit and determine the cause of the odor. The repair person gave me the following recommendations: a) Use a small amount HE detergent (which I do), b) wash only in hot water, and c) use bleach. He also took the unit apart and cleaned it so any build up of soap scum would be removed and ran a bleach cycle in hot water. This may have helped for a short time (less than a week) and the odor remains worse than ever. Even though his advise is understandable, it impossible to wash colors in hot water and bleach without wrecking these clothes! It was my expectation to purchase a washing machine that would handle all my laundry, not just the pure whites!
2. The second issue I have with this unit is that over time, I have noticed our whites do not stay white. This is not something that was as noticeable until after years of use. I started to notice that my family's clothes were not as white as other peoples. When I indicated this to the repairman, he stated that too much soap can cause the problem by not being able to completely rinse the soap out and cause graying. Again he suggested a small amount of detergent be used. Also, as in stated in the manual, he recommend to use bleach, but many white colors also have some colored areas on the clothing articles, so bleach isn't always an option. I do not feel that this washing machine has lived up to my expectations. I have tried for years to get resolution to this problem but have had not success. I am extremely disappointed with Maytag's (now Whirlpool) service on this and their lack of willingness to stand behind their product. When I spoke with Bridget on the phone, she indicated that Whirlpool would not be able to have a representative come to my home to investigate complaint.
Must buy a new washing machine and replaced graying clothes.

I purchased a Maytag Neptune, Model# FAV6800AWW in September, 2005. For the first 20 months of ownership, it worked fine. In May 2007, it would give me a dc error (out of balance). I'd redistribute the clothes, take clothes out, add them, but it kept saying out of balance. I contacted an authorized repairman to check it out and notified Maytag of the problem. Unfortunately, the repairman called and told us he was no longer authorized; then my husband was laid off immediately afterwards, so I wasn't able to do anything about the repair. I knew I'd have to pay labor at that point.
Fast forward to now. The machine wasn't used, nor did anyone look at it during that time. I contacted another authorized repairman who did look at the washer. He had to contact Maytag's tech line. They had told him one thing earlier in the week, then a few days later told him it was the clutch and that the machine would need to be dismantled in order to repair it. This bumped the labor up to nearly $300.00. At that point, my repairman said he didn't believe this repair should be attempted. Once you dismantle the unit, the odds of having further issues increase dramatically. Not to mention, a 20-month-old unit shouldn't have this massive of a failure. He told me to contact Maytag to have the unit replaced. I have since been given a runaround from Maytag. They have offered me a 15% rebate on another unit. I spent $995.00 on this machine and got 20 months of use out of it. Even though I had to wait for the repair, it was documented in their system at the time of the failure. I've offered to pay the difference if they would upgrade me to a better quality machine.
I have sent letters to their upper management and have not received a response. I've left phone messages and was promised a response, which I still haven't received. I went with Maytag due to their reputation. I spent good money on a unit expecting a good 10 years of service out of it, and I didn't get 2. The offer of a 15% rebate is laughable--not only the small amount, but the assumption that I would purchase another Maytag. If the repairman had said that the repair would definitely fix the problem, I'd have paid the labor cost. But when their authorized servicemen are saying it's not going to work properly, one would think they would listen.

After reading all of the complaints on your site regarding the Maytag Neptune washing machine, I felt inclined to comment on my experience with Maytag. I, too, purchased the Neptune, in June of 2005. If I had found your site at that time, I almost certainly would not have bought it. However, the machine worked fine until November, 2007. The spin cycle caused the machine to vibrate uncontrollably; the clothes would still be soaking wet ,and we would have to spin them a 2nd or 3rd time; and the whites were turning a foul color of yellow that would not come out. So, we contacted Maytag in early December, 2007. They said that we needed a new control board and began to look for one. When they found out that it was on back order, they transferred me to the exchange department. Yes, it was that easy. I did not have to complain once. I did not have to raise my voice or threaten them with my attorney at all. They simply said that they'd replace it.
However, about a week later, they said that they were able to find that control board. So, they replaced it, but it did not solve the problem. So, my replacement was back on. Once again, no complaining or threatening needed. The new washer will be delivered tomorrow. It's a Maytag Epic, and I'm hoping that it will be better than the Neptune. Time will tell. So, I thought that I'd share a positive story with you. Thanks for listening.

I complained at the Lowe's store where we bought it, but they continually said the washer is supposed to be like that. wWe have cosmetic damage as a direct result of the malfunctioning washer. Of course, Maytag says it's my fault. Since the repairman changed shocks in it, it now will not spin efficiently as it did before. Clothes are pretty wet. The legs were also changed; the nice added touch from Maytag was to put sandpaper on bottom of legs. It scratched the paint right off the floor. I will now have to repaint floor. Fortunately we bought a 4 year extended warranty, but it's just as bad dealing with Lowe's as it is Maytag.
Does anybody know if there will be another lawsuit ? Neither Maytag nor Lowe's will properly apply warranty to machine. It's a shame no one in government will help consumers like us. The Maytag president should have his phone number published so he can hear all of the complaints. He must not be a stand up guy. Either tha, or the millions of dollars in his annual salary isn't enough to shoulder consumer complaint. I was told to wash only a small batch at a time, and I was told to not mix clothes textures. The computer was too sophisticated. It has a terrible odor that the clothes pick up. I have to leave the door open so that it won't smell. I have to wash it down with Clorox to get the mold smell gone from the door each week.
If I wash a full batch of colored clothes my Neptune will walk across the room with each spin. It sounds like a helicopter and will actually walk into the wall. If we don't put something on the floor to keep it from moving too far it will actually pull out the hose. It has done this since the first batch of wash we washed. I teach voice lessons, and I cannot wash a batch of clothes while I am teaching or the sound from the laundry room is picked up on the recording. We tried to take care of the smell by running bleach through the wash cycle. By the time we found out that the mold problem was epidemic with this washer, it was beyond the 2005 date to submit claims for damage. We did call the number provided by Lowe's building supply and they sent a repairman out. He replaced the door seal and ran a bottle of solution through the wash cycle. The man told us that we needed to purchase this liquid and run a bottle through the machine every month. That was about 6 months ago and has not had any effect on the problem.
We are amazed that a company like Maytag would not make any attempt to fix this problem until it was much too late for people who didn't realize the problem was a defect in the design of the machine (like us) to file a claim. We remodeled our house in 2002. We selected Jen Aire for all of our kitchen appliances because we thought they were top of the line. This, of course, was on top of the ongoing odor/mold issue. So, we called Maytag who sent out a repairman a week later (with our laundry still stuck and molding inside). After an hour and a half, the repairman told us it was a bad circuit board, and the cost for the part was $600. Since we were technically out of warranty by two weeks, he suggested we call Maytag to see if they could do anything. I did and after arguing with them for a half hour, as a goodwill gesture sent the part for free.
We got the part two weeks later, and again the repairman came to install it. After another hour and half he told us it was a bad circuit board, and we needed to wait yet another two weeks for new one. I called Maytag to complain and see if they could rush the part. They were less than sympathetic this time, and they told me I was basically out of luck if this doesn't fix it; however, they could possibly give me a 10% off coupon for another one. Like I'd buy another one after the mold/mildew and now this never-ending repair job? I get the feeling I'm going to be stuck with a $1,100 piece of junk.
So far I'm out $45 in labor costs, $75 in laundromat fees, and misc. cost for ruined clothing. Based on my research I have a feeling I'll be buying a new washer with no help from Maytag.

Just found on the internet while researching for a new dryer, that Maytag had a class action settlement suit for customers who bought Maytag Neptune front load washing machines before 2005. We have this washing machine ,and we did call Maytag regarding the molding smell of our clean laundry and the moldy rubber pieces in the front of the machine. We were never notified by Maytag or told when we called that there was a recall or suit to fix this problem. We have just been living with it - buying very good smelling laundry detergent and softener to cover the bad smell, etc.
We paid just under $1000 for this washing machine that was supposed to last a long time, and it did not live up to it's price. Why were we never notified? Is there anything that can be done to help us now? I would love to stop having to buy expensive, good-smelling fabric softeners to cover the moldy smell and not have to look at the moldy mess in my washing machine every time I do laundry. I find this very annoying that Maytag (or the class action suit) did not notify us. Any help? Thank you.

We paid $1,000 for this washer. We bought the dryer companion unit. There is no way a washer should go bad in 5 years. The useful life of washing machines is twice that. Are there any other actions being taken or being considered? I sent an email to the company - no response, as of yet.

I bought a Maytag Neptune washer, Model # MAH6500AWQ in March of 2005 for about $1000 from Sears. Recently the bearings on the unit failed. I called an authorized Maytag repair service, and they informed me that it will cost $800 to repair the unit. I contacted Maytag and was told that all they could do is pay for half of the part cost, about $300. Sears did not offer any help either. I think this is terrible service for an expensive unit like this, regardless what the fine print says about the warranty. For a replacement washer, I will certainly stay away from Sears and Maytag.

I purchased a Maytag Neptune washer and dryer in July 2006. After one week the washer did not work and Lowes replaced it with a new one. The washer was on sale but still cost $1000. Now, Jan. 2008, the washer has stopped working. I'm told to call a repairman recommended by Maytag. My warranty information says the parts are to be covered for three years but the repairman says any Neptune, manufactured after 1/1/06, only has 1-year of covered parts.
Basically, the washer is a piece of junk. The mold and mildew on the clothing is a danger to anyone with allergies, the machine shaking increases the risk of structural damage to my home, and now the machine is tripping the ground fault outlet increasing the risk of fire.

I purchased a Maytag Neptune washer in the summer of 2000 with a 5 yr. warranty. During the 5 years, the machine had been repaired 2 times for the same problem. The motor and circuit board had failed twice, and the mold on the boot was becoming quite troubling. Now last week the same problem has occurred, and the service man advised me of the problem with the Neptune and how it put Maytag out of business! Now I'm stuck with a $1500 piece of junk and have to spend another large sum of money to purchase a new one! When calling Maytag, they are oh-so-generous and would pay for the $77 service call fee if they sent a repair man of their own out there to inspect the machine and give it it's last rites !
The 7-year-old washer has cost me $240 per year, not including detergents, softeners, etc. It may be wiser to look into a laundromat rather than ever buy another Maytag washer again! I was thoroughly disappointed on many levels of the quality of the unit, as well as the satisfaction of service I received from the head office people!

We purchased a Maytag Neptune after our old Maytag gave up, following 30 years of use and 4 major moves. We purchased the Neptune based on the hype that it was very conservation-oriented. What we have experienced is a machine from Hell: it walks all over. During our kitchen remodel, we decided to have the sub-floor replaced in the laundry room and large tile installed, as we were told it was our floor--not the machine. Now we need to replace the grout in the tile.
Mold, mildew-- and it wrings the clothes together and always has standing water in the seal area. My wife hates the machine and doubtful that Maytag could extend enough goodwill to get her to try another one. Now with the noise increasing and needing attention, we first called a Maytag service dealer only to find they don't service Neptunes. We have had it with this machine and now will replace it far short of its expected life. Saw the class action suite settlement too late, but felt compelled to comment just the same. About 6-7 years ago, I bought a Maytag Atlantis washer and dryer. The washer was constantly giving me trouble. The repairman was here at least twice a year changing parts on it. I was able to purchase the extended warranty when I bought the set. The last time the repairman came, which was about a year and a half ago, he finally called Maytag and told them that there wasn't any use in fixing the washer. So they told him to order me another washer which was ordered at Sears in Marksville, LA. He told me that there had been lots of problems with the Atlantis. So, they gave me the top of the line model which is an Ensignia.
I don't feel that it was given to me. Paying for extended warranty for 4 years, I figured I bought the washer myself. Anyway, they said that they could not give me a warranty with this washer because it was a replacement. I argued about it, but it didn't help. I thought every appliance had a warranty. Well for the last 9 months, the washer makes a grinding noise when it spins. About 6 months ago, the timer started messing up. It won't spin unless you raise and lower the lid. I have had it with Maytag. All of my appliances are Maytag. I can't afford to have it fixed. I'm disabled now. The old Maytag washers were exceptional. I had one that lasted 14 years. Warranty replaced it in '04 with identical model and I have had nothing but problems with 4 repair calls - wasn't filling to proper levels, noisy, off balance all the time, black grease on the drain tray, doesn't rinse clothes well (I have to run it through several rinse cycles, not efficient), and lint collects inside pockets and cuffs. The hot wash cycle is just barely warm. The gas Dryer isn't uniform in performance as sometimes clothes are still damp and sometimes very hot at the end of the cycle. Sears service techs can't find anything wrong.
I believe the washer is extremely hard on the clothes with an excessively long spin cycle that doesn't rinse effectively so that it must be repeated. I have to closely monitor every single load to catch it as soon as it goes off balance. I have to turn the cold water faucet off when I need a hot water wash since the hot doens't work otherwise. Then I have to turn it back on to go through the multiple rinse cycles necessary to rinse the clothes. It's very time consuming to say the least.

We have had at least 3 service calls on the washer for placing rubber vibration pads under the feet due to excessive vibration during spin cycle, a new re-designed washer base from Maytag to prevent the washer from walking across the floor, and the installation of a ground fault interruption circuit due to a potential for short circuit as noted by Maytag due to possible leaking in door (how this fixes the leak problem is beyond me and I am an engineer. This is a band aid that does not address the problem.) The washer still vibrates excessively during the spin cycle which I am sure will cause premature failure in some critical part at some point. I was not satisfied and wrote a letter requesting a voucher for a new top load washer. To this day, I have not received a voucher. I understand that the class action suit has expired, but I still have not received my voucher. There is still a mold issue with this washer and I am concerned that this is also a health issue. After just three years my Neptune TL washer quit. A technician was sent to look at the washer and found it to be defective. I was told that even had we purchased the extended warranty at point of sale, the warranty would not cover these defective parts. This machine also had excessive rust around tub rim, occurrences of faulty codes, and poor wash/clean capability.
It would require approx. $700.00 plus dollars to repair. This is unacceptable. Maytag obviously recognizes the inherent mechanical/electrical failures of their products yet refuses to help the consumer and continues to produce faulty machines.

Sears doesn't want to replace it, and Maytag wants us to get an authorized Maytag repair technician, but refers us to repair services that are not Maytag employees. This has been going on for over three months. The Sears technician told us that he had another customer with the same complaint, and they can't fix that one either.

(It is shaking the pictures off my walls) The problem is still there. All this for $2000.00?

We purchased both the Maytag Neptune washer and dryer in 2001 for $1,600. Within two years we had black mold on the rubber gasket around the opening. If you moved the drum a lot of water sloshed around the bottom of the drum. Two years ago, nothing worked on the washer and we had to replace the circuit board - over $300.
In the past year there's a horrible banging sound when it's spinning and the door opens at will.
I thought I was replacing my 25 year old Whirlpool Speedqueen washer and dryer with the best washer and dryer at the time but I was mistaken.

I have seen hundreds of complaints on your site regarding the Maytag Neptune washer. I belong to this sad club - purchasing a top-loading Maytag Neptune washer FAV6800Aww in March of 2005. It began malfunctioning in late November 05 and after replacing parts, and spending $$$ and torturtous time on the phone with Maytag, it still doesn't work, and probably never will... I see that that this problem (not the mold, but the stop-mid-cycle & twisting laundry) is very widespread and would like to know if there are any class-action suits being filed on out behalf?
I live in a rural area, a 20 minute drive to a public laundry. Being without a washer for nearly 2 months has cost me time, and money in repairs, travel, coins, etc. Not to mention the $1000 for the washer that DOES NOT WORK.

We purchased an Atlantis MAV 5000AWW serial #13980762YM on 8-21-2000, for $632.95. Prior to this purchase we had a Maytag clothes washer for 26 years and were extremely satisfied so we purchased another one. On 9-15-00 we had a service man come out to replace the pulley, belt, and dust cover because they had cracks in them. Then on 1-28-05 we had the same service man replace the brake rotor and lining, snubber, & drive belt. Of course the warranty had run out so with labor we paid $168.80.
Within 1-1 1/2 years, we are now experiencing the same loud noise at the end of the spin cycle (the same sound which warranted the previous repair).
We are to the point that if we have to invest $170.00 every 1 to 1 1/2 years, why don't we just get rid of this and purchase a dependable machine from a company that will stand behind their product. Maytag is not that type of company.

We have lost nearly $4000 invested in my washer and dryer. I know the only solution I have is to buy new washer and dryer and replaster my walls.

I was not aware of the class action lawsuit against Maytag until I went on-line to seek solutions from Maytag on how I can repair my machine. I called Maytag customer service and they repeatedly told me that they would not be responsible for repairing my machine, though they admit that they sold faulty machines.

I am complaining about my Maytag Atlantis Washer Model # MAV9501EWW purchased approximately 3 years ago from Lowe's at about $600. A few weeks ago I noticed that on the wash and rinse cycles; there was a screeching noise that was louder on super loads;less noisy on medium loads. As a do-it-yourselfer I did some researching and decided to replace the drive belt myself. What I found is the reason the belt failed prematurely is because the transmission is failing causing more friction on the belt/pulley drive. Even if I want to replace the transmission myself (about $250 for the tran delivered);I'm investing in a reoccuring problem. No Maytag; you have lost me as a customer and I will not by your brand again.

We already have put in close to $500 for repairs. And our last claim, instead of receiving monies we received a voucher for another Maytag appliance for up to $250!

I thought they sold the best, apparently not.
Now I am left with a washer that is moldy and stinks that if I repair will only continue to have the same problem. Replacing the gasket will only get rid of the mold until it grows back, guess Maytag didn't do much testing of their product.

I bought my Neptune Top loader washing machine and matching dryer October 2005. I THOUGHT I researched thoroughly and the sales associate at Home Depot insisted that it was the top of the line. This was my first brand new washing machine purchase and I spent over $1700 for the set. Had a couple people tell me after I bought it that the machine was junk, but I didn't believe them. How could it be when it cost so much? I wish I had been told about them and all their problems before I spent that kind of money.
As everyone else has mentioned, many of my clothes have been ruined. They are completely twisted together after washing and it takes ten minutes to pull them apart. Three months ago the machine started unbalancing and leaving the clothes soaked in foul water until I discovered them. The softener never completely empties out and low and behold last week I came how to find the lr flashing on the screen. According to the guidebook, the motor needs repaired.
Over the last two months I had received numerous letters telling me that my warranty was expiring and I should purchase an extended one. I didn't. The machine was top of the line and only a year old! Thinking I had no warranty because of the correspondence I had received, I called EVERY local repairman in a 20 mile radius. NO ONE WILL TOUCH IT!!!
Finally broke down and called Maytag. After waiting over an hour to talk to a real person, I finally got a rep who told me that the repairmen HAD to work on it since they were authorized dealers. And apparently, despite the paperwork they sent to me, I AM STILL UNDER WARRANTY. Parts but no labor. However, all the repair shops were closed by then and I was told to call back the next day to the Maytag line (Oh great, another hour on hold) and they would talk to the repair men directly. There is no direct number for me to call, even though I already made the complaint. The help line is first come first serve and apparently they either only have on customer service rep or else there is one hell of a lot of problems needing addressed. I don't know yet what will be done to fix my washer, but I do know that I shouldn't have to be going to the laundry mat when I have a one year old thousand dollar machine sitting in my house.
At this moment, the only cost I am out is going to the laundry mat for the past two weeks. However, I'm sure once the repair man gets around to me the expense will be considerable.

This Maytag Neptune unit was a lemon. After 3 years it suddenly stopped draining and spinning. I spoke with Maytag support on the phone 2 years ago, and they told me the appliance was out of warantee. They did not inform me the appliance was defective. The unit stood there in a corner unused for 2 years.. I finally had an appliance serviceman come out yesterday who informed me that this is a common problem and a manufacturing defect. Now I do an internet search and find out there was a Class Action lawsuit against Maytag over these defective machines.
I then spoke with a Maytag representative this morning again, who did not mention a defective machine until I told her there was a lawsuit against Maytag. She defended her employer by explaining that Maytag never admitted the model was defective and therefore is not obligated to repair any machine not specifically claimed in the lawsuit. So you know what Maytag? You have lost a customer for life, and everyone who asks me will get the greedy corporation rant. Screw the loyal consumer, minimize loss and produce crappy products. That is what Maytag now stands for as far as I can tell.
This appliance is landfill material. I spend a few hundred on appliance repairmen before I found out this is a defective unit. Plus 2 years of laundromat expenses because this $1800 washer failed.

We purchased our Maytag Neptune top loader from LOWES IN Feb.2004. I should have done my research on the internet before buying this lemon but my wife (as always) doesn't like to listen to me. Knowing the Maytag name, I figured what can go wrong? Now I know what a wrong move that was!
From day one we noticed a funny smell on our clothes after doing the laundry. We had the repair tech come out after about 20 washes and finally got fed up! He had no explanation as to why the water was smelling that way when we did the laundry with him present. I switched to a stronger fabric softener and that seemed to alleviate the problem for now.
Several months later we had the tech come out when we noiced the washer wouldn't drain. Come to find there was a penny stuck inside. I questioned how could a penny get inside the mechanics when the seals of the aggitator should be closer to the wall of the washer drum? The guy noticed that there was a larger gap that you could just about put your pinky in. Anyways, several calls later for the same reason, wether its a button, shoe string or coin - it'll get stuck inside!!! As everyone on the blog states, Maytag customer sevice is worth squat!!! We were never notified about the class action lawsuit either. Don't ever buy a Maytag product EVER!!!!!

After she told me that I examined my washer and come to find out, I thought the liner was supposed to be black, but ithere was actually mold growing all over.
I was completely disgusted and called Maytag. They informed me that the class action lawsuit was over in 2005 and that there was nothing I could do and had to pay for all my repairs now. I purchased a Maytag Atlantis top loading washer in March 2001. My first complaint to the repairman was for the smell. He said to run bleach through a wash cycle once a month!! In August 2006, we had to replace the pump; a week later, the timer, and now the transmission again.
Guess who's not buying another Maytag? They haven't been the same since the Maytag repairman died. He probably got worked to death.
If washing machines are going to die in 5 years, go out and buy the cheapest one ($237 at Lowe's), and just replace them instead of paying $250 in repairs on a top-of-the-line machine that cost $800-$900 new.

(not sure what that is about) He also said it needed some new parts which would cost $225. He said it was ok to use until the parts came in. Two days later the washer dumped all of its soapy water on my floor. I called him back and he said that would cost an additional $300+.
I cancelled all repairs because it didn't make any sense to spend $525 on a machine that I paid $500 for just two years ago. After talking with a few repairmen, it sounds as if Maytag is using very cheap parts and giving shorter warranties. This is very disheartening for people who struggle to make this major purchase to begin with, but expect that it will last them at least 3-5 years. My previous machine lasted 15 years. I will never buy anything Maytag again!!!

I purchased a Maytag Legacy Series washer in July 2005. Within one month, the machine was shaking so violently during the spin cycle that it walked across my laundry room, even with a full load. The first repairman said my floor was too soft. The next repairman said it was the base, which they came out (again) and replaced. The next repairman said it needed little sticky cups on the feet. The next repairman said it needed to be balanced, and he adjusted the feet.
The next repairman said it was new screws, which he ordered and came out (again) to replace. Home Depot says their hands are tied and I must go through Maytag so-called techline. Now here it is a full year later, and I call Maytag Corporate to complain that they have NOT been able to fix this machine. They send out yet another repairman to determine if I'm having the same problem as before. He comes out, tells techline he doesn't know what's wrong, and they say they'll get back to me. I call two days later to find out when they're taking this machine away, and they tell me that a vector ring has been ordered!
I am absolutely DONE with Maytag. They refuse to deem the $500 machine unrepairable and they want me to continue wasting my time waiting for bogus repairmen that can't fix the machine. It's a total fraud. Even the repairmen have said they don't know what's wrong, and it's like they'll get in trouble if they tell techline that the machine is unrepairable. In total, how many times has a repairman visited my house for the SAME problem? I count 8 .. that's EIGHT repairmen in one year! And yet, for a measly $500 they refuse to acknowledge that it's a lemon and refund my money, thereby saving themselves a customer. I'm done with Maytag.

After spending several hours on the phone they agreed to send a local repairman if I would be available 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
After the repairman made the repairs he told me he found coins in the machine so it will not be covered under the warranty because that is improper use of machine. They would not even cover the service call of $145.00. He also had to replace the pump which was $147.00. Of course he tells me all of this after it is all repaired.
