We were very excited to buy this smoker when it was on sale on QVC in March 2015. We used it maybe two or three times before it started repeatedly shutting on and off while making a weird beeping noise. We called customer service, and they sent us a new control panel to fix the issue. We used it a couple more times with no problems and saved it indoors for the winter. We maybe only used it a couple of times this year, and of course on Labor Day, the smoker is having the same problem.

After waiting over 30 minutes on the phone to speak to somebody, I decide to email the company seeing as no one responded to the voicemail they say you can leave them. Now I am being offered a new body kit for $100 plus shipping, because my warranty expired. Waiting to hear back if there will be any kind of warranty with this new kit if I decide to purchase it. But after reading all these reviews, I'm really not sure if I should chance spending at least another $100 on this brand. It's upsetting to make this decision when I've already spent over $250 on a product that I thought was worth it. It's also a shame because when the machine does work, the food comes out incredible. It gets an extra star for that.

I have a Masterbuilt smoker model 20071814 that works great when working properly. However, over half the time the unit will shut off randomly or never turn on. The control on this unit has temp setting and time setting on it and frequently is inoperative. I received this as a gift so I didn't have a receipt and used it no more than twice before the issue started. I contacted the company 5 times and they never got back to me. Given that it's only worked a few times it's essentially cost $50- $100 for each successful smoke I've got out of it. I understand that certain items are bad out of the box but I do not understand how a supposedly reputable company does such a poor job supporting their product.

Masterbuilt Electric Smoker model 20070910 - I purchased this unit about 2 years ago. I kept it in the garage and only brought it out when using it. I never used an extension chord. I probably used this smoker about 10 times. The last time I tried using it, the system kept shorting out the GFI outlet. I tried a different outlet with the same problem. Parts are not available. This should not happen to a unit that cost as much as it did and was well maintained.

I originally purchased by Masterbuilt Smoker Model # 200472612 in March 2015 and just after the warranty period the smoker would start to heat up then shut off. I paid over $100 to replace the electronic control on the front of the smoker. Now it is doing the same thing after only using it 3 times. When the smoker works it does a great job but I can't afford to keep throwing $100 out for a part to keep it running. Not satisfied at all with this smoker.

Bought a Masterbuilt (20070910) electric smoker about 1.5 years ago, used it sparingly. It worked well when it worked. I tried to use it recently and it keeps tripping my GFCI. I can't find the replacement part. Not sure what I would do if I found the part. In my mind this item should last a long time. I am looking for a replacement now. Masterbuilt is off the table.

Masterbuilt 30 Smoker model 20079015 - Bought the smoker on May 31, 2016. Used it for the 4th time on August 29. Started just fine and ran for about an hour then started beeping and error code F showed up. Unplugged it several times for up to 3 hours and it never restarted. Funny that it died on the 89th day of ownership. Wished I'd have found these reviews before I bought it. Daughter has one she's real happy with so she's got one out of thousands that work. Bought 2 yr replacement plan from Lowe's so I hope they'll refund my money. If not I'll end up with another piece of junk that quits after 3 uses, stored in my house and only outside on a covered concrete patio for use.

I purchased a new Masterbuilt Model 20070311 40 inch electric smoker from a second-hand store. First mistake. It was new and had all the parts, store employee told me he had tested it and it worked. Second mistake, I believed him. Anyway, I get this shiny new smoker home and plug it in and set the controls to season it per the manual. After 5 minutes it clicks off, starts beeping with an error message EAA1. Call company, explain problem. Put me on hold for 5 minutes. Ask me for serial number which is impossible to read, it is so poorly stamped. They sent me a new controller. Installed it. Set temp and time. No kidding, 5 minutes later it starts beeping again and the display shows temp at 37F and the same EAA1 error code. I figure it's the thermostat? Maybe. Has anyone ever had this problem and fixed it. If I didn't live in California but in Georgia I would just dump this piece of junk in Masterbuilt's parking lot.

It will heat up and sometimes will maintain its temp but sometimes the temp starts going down and will not heat back up until I unplug it and replug it a few times. Today I put a rack of ribs on, temp set at 250. After about an hour I noticed the temp going down. It hit 170 before I could get it to start heating again. We thought the heating element was going out so we purchased a new one and replaced it but it still does the same thing. :(

I have only used it about 6 times and it never did smoke a lot. I thought maybe it was the wood chips so I tried different brands and types of wood but it still didn't smoke like it should. The 40" Electric smoker Model # 20070508 was purchased on 6-26-09. This is a high end product I spent nearly $600.00 for. The heating element is thermostatically controlled and it has a timer in addition to stainless racks and a stainless door with window. The heating element burned out last week. I called Masterbuilt to order a replacement. I was told they no longer made the part and there was no replacement assembly. When I asked what I should do with my smoker, Masterbuilt customer service suggested I throw it away. I am one IRATE customer with no plans of replacing my smoker with another Masterbuilt as apparently designed obsolescence is their number 1 product feature!

I also fell victim to the Masterbuilt Electric Smoker issues. I bought mine used, and it worked great for two or three smoking jobs. Then I started getting the clicking sounds, along with the shutting down during the middle of smoking. Glad I didn't pay full price. Yes, it is kept in the garage, and is used under cover, and not abused. Model 20070112. Based on previous reports, it seems that buying a replacement controller is throwing money into a black hole. I purchased my Masterbuilt elite electric smoker about a year ago from Cabelas. I keep in on my covered patio out of the weather. I plug it directly into my GFI outlet on my home. I have used it 6-8 times and it has never kept a good temperature. To top it off, today I was cooking a turkey for a family dinner and half way through cooking the turkey the analog plug melted over the left prong and began to smoke. It shorted out, and will not even turn on now. I was able to get the analog controller off of the heating element prong and both the left prong and the controller are no longer usable. If I am going to spend nearly $200 on something I expect it to last more than a handful of times. Very, very unhappy with this product. Even though It has only been used I am out of my warranty period so I am just plain out of luck.

I have had the chance to speak with Masterbuilt again over this issue, and this time, the individual I spoke with was great, she informed me that there may have been some internal wiring issues with the unit and had sent out a new unit. I set up the new unit, ran it through a few test and all seems well, even the temperature is much closer (4-9 degree variance). I am happy and changing my rating to 4 stars.

Masterbuilt 20070411 30-Inch Top Controller Electric Smoker - First off let me say that say that when it works it can be great (I purchased on Amazon). With that said, I did contact Masterbuilt about 40ish days after I received the item. The smoker was two major flaws. One the built in temperature sensor is completely wrong (which is what I contacted Masterbuilt regarding). When I set the Smoker at 220, my first smoke was done very quickly (overcooked). I then went out and purchased a Maverick ET-733 and also used my buddies to ensure the heat readings on both were accurate. At 220 on the MES my and my buddies ET-733 were at 256 and 259 respectively. Way too hot for smoking low and slow.

The second major issue that I have is my unit powers on and off at times (usually right when I plug it in). I store it in my attached garage out of the weather, with a cover (though I don't need the cover). I have had it turn off in the middle of two smokes, luckily there were both small cuts of meat/appetizers and I was able to unplug and plug it back in. Like I said I have most issues when I first plug it in. It flickers on and off and then I have to unplug it usually 2-3 times and it's good after that. I've had it less than a year and I am not 100% happy at all. Hopefully I just had a defective unit, but the customer support rep I spoke to was not very helpful either. When it totally breaks and I'm sure it will I don't know if I will purchase another Masterbuilt, even though it has pretty solid reviews I would like to stay away from a second unit with issues. So a top digital controller issue and a heat issue - horrible and no support.

30" Electric Smoker - Gift for Father's Day 2014 (bought on QVC). Used about 6 times and June 2015 stops working. Dial controller shorted out and broke off one of the element prongs inside the controller body. Just over one year old. Contacted Masterbuilt and they hinted at design issue and sent me new controller and element. No charge. Was quite happy. Used 5-6 times in 2015/2016. May 2016 plug in, light goes on and no heat in element. Controller has shorted out, melted part of controller body and discolored element prong. Interesting that it is same side of controller and same element prong that is affected. Contact Masterbuilt and the response was "We already sent you one free of charge last year and our parts warranty is 90 days. You can order new parts (with shipping will be about $75)." They also said I probably used an extension cord that contributed to the problem??? I did not. Thinking I should just throw away and buy different brand.

It was cold out here in Colorado so we didn't use it to much in the cold. We want to use it now that it is finally warm out and we bought some ribs and chicken to smoke. We got the smoker out of the garage and plugged it in and the control panel on top turns on and only stays on for about 5 minutes then shuts off. It seems to heat up fine for the 5 minutes then shuts off and then when I try to restart it it beeps and will not start. I waited about ten minutes and tried it again. It stayed on a little longer and shut off again. It's pretty frustrating especially when we have only used a couple of times. We really liked how it worked when it was working but now it just sits there looking brand new in the garage.

Put a turkey breast in this morning for the holiday & checked it 15 minutes later & the unit was off & won't turn back on. Outlet is working fine but control panel isn't. I am so disappointed in this product. I originally bought this smoker 30" electric black probe for Father's Day purchased 5/23/2014 & it worked fine the two times we used it, went to use it on 7/19/2014 & nothing, wouldn't do anything. Called Cabela's & they were gracious enough to exchange for another even though the 30 day return policy was up. So used new one a few times & had a family get together on 1/11/2015, wouldn't work, plugged in, completely dead. Called Cabelas again & they were awesome, said "bring it back." They had discontinued this one so we paid another 79.00 & got the one with glass window in door & probe, used it several times.

Go to use it for cookout today for Memorial Day, same thing completely dead! Very upsetting when it's once again about a year old & have 300.00 invested, out of warranty by 3 months! I've read all these complaints, same thing. You would think they would recall these or Masterbuilt needs to step up & make it right to the consumer. That's 3 smokers that did the same thing!! I definitely hope this helps someone else on a smoker choice. Would definitely NOT recommend Masterbuilt!!

Wow I wish I would have found this website and read these reviews before I blew my money on the Masterbuilt electric smoker model 20070910. I purchased this smoker approx 1 1/2 years ago and maybe used it 7 or 8 times. This past weekend I had prepped 15 lbs of pork to be smoked for a graduation party. I lifted the cover, plugged it in and NO POWER!! Sadly enough no pulled pork made it to the party. How is it a $200 smoker only last a year and a half? PRODUCT FAILURE!!! Yeah I can order the new control panel but for what, so it can fail again. I am definitely steering away from anything masterbuilt. Big waste of money!!

Well no service from store due to what he said was warehouse damage. So stuck with smoker which has never been used. Just buyer beware. Shop for other brand. Very poor customer service.

How does that work? I shared my ribs with my neighbor and she was so pleased that she went and bought the same unit. Hers does not turn on at all. Her husband is not well and I feel obliged to fix hers as well. So now I'll buy two controllers at minimum and perhaps a probe for mine. $199.00 for one season. Then I started to heat it up and would heat up to about 225 degrees and then it would trip my breaker. I tried it several times on different circuits and the same thing would happen every time. I have only used this smoker 5 or 6 times and really expected better use than what I have gotten. Not happy at all. This seems to be a reoccurring problem from all the other reviews I've read. Bought "on sale" @ Ace, was happy, did not read reviews (lesson learned). Used twice for salmon, ribs and sausage. Mmm good. Let it set on patio for 2.5 months (covered patio and used cover that came with it). Tried to use it and control panel sends out "morse" code signals. Called Masterbuilt, was on hold for 5. 5 minutes (must have a lot of problems since customer service is sooo busy). They grilled me on where did I store it, can't leave it out in the elements, (outdoor appliance n'est pas???) poor thought from the engineers developing these. I have had a "Little Chief" smoker for 30 years and have left it outside for all this time and it still works (I will use it in the meantime) and will return this unit for money back or trash it or convert it to a simple "element" smoker with a digital plug - in wall timer.

I bought this smoker in January of 2015 at Academy. After the first use, the meat probe went bad. They sent me a replacement under warranty. I have only used this about 5 times, and today I'm having trouble with it again. When I press "Meat Probe" on the display, the whole unit shuts down, which is kind of ruining my smoke. It appears to be accurate on the temperature, but when the button is pressed (or on the remote), it shuts off. I suspect a bad controller, as it is heating up just fine. It's now December, and they will probably tell me it's out of warranty. Ah yes, "Made in China" rears its ugly head once again. I would recommend another brand of smoker! I use it very rarely, and did not get my $300 worth.

Updated on 12/18/2015: I called Masterbuilt, and they shipped me out a new controller for this smoker, for no charge. I haven't installed it yet, but I appreciate them replacing it since it's out of the 90 day warranty. I have had it about 11 months. I also noticed that there is a black liquid oozing out of the front door, down low. I guess the seal doesn't work well. I read somewhere that the unit will shut down, if it's extremely cold outside - wonderful. Even though I live in Dallas, it still gets cold. Something about you have to heat the meat probe up with a hair dryer before turning it on. Maybe the whole controller needs to be kept inside, to avoid low temps. Who knows??!

I purchased one of the Masterbuilt 40" Stainless units with the glass door in 2008. I thought stainless would last forever and the glass door had to be very cool to see the meat smoking. I followed the directions keeping it reasonably clean. It wasn't worth the extra money for stainless and the glass door. The glass was a pain to clean and the stainless doesn't wear any better than the powder coated black units.

All of that being said, I used the hell out of it for 7 years and had it maxed out with meats about half of the time. It would hold 2 full slabs of ribs, 20 pieces of chicken and 2 large Boston Butts, a brisket and some brats for the cook :). Fully loaded didn't take any longer and the built-in meat probe was a very nice addition. Eventually, the burner burnt out and the best price for a replacement was at Masterbuilt for $19.95, others wanted $50 plus shipping. I gave it to my son last week because I retired and don't smoke as much anymore PLUS Ace Hardware had the 30" black unit meat probe and came with a free cover, rib rack & sausage rack all for $124.95. As with anything, there will be some that don't last, but overall, Masterbuilt an extremely high rating. I'll stick with them.

I was received the Masterbuilt Electric Smoker #20070211 Christmas 2007. I use it year around, still working as designed but with a lot of "band-aids" to keep it going. I would have to say I have mixed reviews of this product. For the most part, I am happy with the product and its end results. Where I am unhappy is in the quality of some of the critical parts such as the water bowl which is crucial to keeping your food from drying out. And the chip tray which is the main component in electric smoking. Both of these items rusted out rather quickly and have been replaced twice via a second party source ($63 each time). The overall unit is sound except the plastic trim on the door is cracking.

I notice some of the reviews comment on the unit not working or uneven smoking. Since the design of this electric unit depends on temperature, on a sunny day, that unit just sitting in the sun will warm up beyond the smoking temperature causing the heating elements not to turn on since its job is to regulate heat not generate smoke. When the heating elements do not turn on, there is no burning of the chips. Hence no smoke! So in the summertime, I usually smoke early in the morning or in the evening taking the sun out of the equation. So this is a major design flaw and I think if their literature was clear OR they explained how this unit works (heat sensitive), I think there would be less complaints as users would be informed. But to be honest, most mid-priced smokers work on the same principles and have the same shortcomings.

With that being said, my issues go back to the quality of some of the critical parts and their pricey replacement. I cannot speak for the current units, but I am assuming based on the quality of the replacement parts, it has not changed much. I am happy with the items I smoke. A friend of mine with a similar unit invested in a cold smoker attachment (second party) to take care of smoking in hot weather. I do use this smoker a lot, and will not replace anymore parts. So I would be looking for a more commercial end smoker since I smoke a lot. But for the casual smoker, this unit with its shortcomings should be fine.

I explained what was going on, and she said she would do a favor - just this once - and send a replacement electronic panel. It arrived (without any instructions), and I had my handyman install it. It didn't work. He took it back to his workshop and discovered that the panel was defective and couldn't accept power. Almost $300 down the drain...

We bought this electric smoker on QVC. Used it about seven times now it won't stay on and if you call Masterbuilt instead of them just sending you a part to fix your problem they want You to cut the electrical cord and email them a picture of the area where the cord was cut! I thought this was stupid and a waste of my time because if I call you and tell you what is wrong and you cannot send me a replacement part then you are telling me that your product is defective/a lemon and you want to put a band-aid on it and send me another lemon that might last a little longer! How about a Refund or maybe a class action lawsuit so all the consumers can get their money back and spend it on a worthy product? I am so pissed off I made payments on this thing through QVC and as soon as it was paid off it started acting up. Sure it was only 300.00 but I have nothing to show for it but another piece of embarrassing junk in my backyard that doesn't work!

I purchased a Masterbuilt smoker two years ago. I had used the unit only a half a dozen times when the unit began to trip a breaker. After several unsuccessful attempts to use the unit, I called Masterbuilt's customer service number. After being on hold for over an hour, I was told the issue was the heating element. Really, the heating element fails after 6 uses? I spent somewhere around $27 to have a new element sent to me. Once the element arrived, I spent an hour removing the old element and installing the new element. Upon plugging the unit in and starting it up... same problem. I won't spend another dime trying to fix it. (Same thing I told Masterbuilt) I will invest in a Kamado style smoker or pellet smoker and move on. Very disappointing to invest $300 in a smoker that works 6 times.

Updated on 08/22/2015: After contacting me, Masterbuilt offered to replace my unit and give me credit for the $27.99 I spent on a replacement heating coil. Masterbuilt offered to replace my unit for the sum of $181.00. I can't imagine why I would spend ANOTHER $181.00 on a replacement smoker when I spent $300 on my first smoker that lasted for 6 uses. I have no confidence that the new unit would be any better than its predecessor. I'm moving on to a Komodo smoker. No electric parts to go bad like on the Masterbuilt and much better quality. My Masterbuilt is headed to the recycle bin.

I purchased this smoker from QVC two years ago. I have only used it a dozen times or so. It stopped working during July 4th weekend and after I found the heating element had failed. I used my multi-tester to do a continuity test and it failed. There were no apparent breaks in the element but I had no reading on the meter. I went through what several people have reported, extremely long periods of time on the phone waiting to speak to someone from Masterbuilt. I assumed lots of people used their smokers during the holiday weekend which resulted in a spike of breakdowns. The recording which played while I was on hold kept repeating they were experiencing an unusually high load of callers at this time and I should be patient. Two days later and my third attempt to call them resulted in over an hour on hold before I was told that I was 5th in their queue and should be patient.

It took another half hour for them to pick up and I was told that the part I needed was on backorder until 7/21. They would call me when the part came in to place an order. I called them back on 7/22 because I didn't hear from them and the wait on hold was still long but not as bad as the first time. The rep from Masterbuilt said the element that I was waiting for did not come in and there was a mistake made with their order. The element would be on backorder for another two or three weeks. I was not going to wait a total of five weeks so I explored other options. The only other source for a heating element for a Masterbuilt smoker is appliancefactoryparts.com. I attempted to order an element from them at more than twice the cost only to find out that they also were out of stock and their backorder was going to be three weeks.

First of all, the smoker should not have failed after so few uses. Secondly, the replacement part should not be this hard to replace. I am stuck like most that have reported problems here in that I have too much money in this product to simply throw it away and I leery of spending more money. I am going to wait until the potential backorder period has ended (summer will be over) and I am going to call Masterbuilt again. If I have to wait on hold for an hour, or if I the part is still on backorder, I will have spent the last nickel on a Masterbuilt product ever. I will then start looking for a product that is supported better than what Masterbuilt produces. I will report here again when that time comes with the result.

It heats up good but the most important part is will it smoke? Not very well. If you put chips in before it get up to temp it will smoke while it's reaching the desired temp. If you wait until it gets up to temp it takes at least an hour before any smoke appears. Also, if you are cooking for several hours it's a total frustration to get smoke. Each time you add new chips you must open the door, empty the ashtray and then leave the door open until the temp goes down 30-40 degrees before you close. Otherwise the chips just lay there and never burn. I'm sure this would make a good roaster but as a smoker it's pretty crappy.

It will take directions for temp and time, starts and 10 seconds later it is off. It is very disappointing that something that costs so much is so shoddily built but then that is the nature of having a design issue, or being built in CHINA. US products are usually very well designed. I wouldn't wish this kind of workmanship or design on anyone.

It is the cost that really irritates me and lost time, having to change plans. I'm writing this while on hold to the company for the past 57:66 min. I experienced the same problems as several other reviewers. I happen to know an experienced electrician and we both investigated what is happening to the Masterbuilt unit. As the temperature inside the smoker approaches the set temperature, an increasing amount of current is directed to the ground wire. Eventually this trips the circuit. This is why the smoker works as it is heating up to temperature and why, after you discover the tripped circuit and reset it, it works again for a while - right up until you reach your set temperature. Of course, we had to pretty much rip the controls apart to see this and, as a few of you have correctly said, plugging this unit into a non-ground fault circuit is just too dangerous.

The next people may not be as fortunate as we were. Thank you.

My story is the same as Rich & Dennis. I purchased the smoker on April 2014 at Sam's Club. I used it 6 times. Starting in September, it trips this GFI as soon as it starts to heat. With the cost of this product I expected much more. Something at this price point should last longer than 6 months / 6 uses. I would recommend anyone to avoid this product. There does need to be a recall. This is my second bad experience with MB, I had a 30" that completely stopped working after 2.5 years, my mistake giving this brand another chance.

I actually have two smokers, one with the digital control, the other has the thermostat with the knob on the side. I've had both quite a while (6 or 7 yrs) and I keep them outside. No special care. I've replaced the seal and a wire clip on the digital and the element just went out on the other. Other than that I've really enjoyed them. I'm sure I'm going to buy another element whether it's OEM or after market if I can find one. Yes the one with the bad element tripped the breaker and was slow heating.

Bought all the accessories, meat and marinated for Indian Tandoori and Caribbean Jerk chicken in the refrigerator. I was so excited to use the smoker for the first time in my life because I was watching it on QVC and drooling myself every time I watch it. On 10/14/2014 I set it to preheat around 4pm and waited for like half an hour. The controller was reading at 90F and then started dropping. I was like what the heck is happening... and that is how I ended up being here to tell the story.

When I got this from Sam's Club, I got 3 years extended warranty which was giving me 5years in total but after reading this forum, now i made up my mind that I do not need this useless and dangerous product near my house. So, my first MES goes back to Sam's Club and never look back again for the brand called Masterbuilt. I think this is the reason Costco stopped selling them... NO WONDER THEY JUST GIVE YOU 90 DAY WARRANTY!!! BECAUSE IT DOESN'T EVEN LAST 9 DAYS!!! Yes, my recommendation is, if I were you, I would definitely stay away from MASTERBUILT product entirely.

I purchased a Masterbuilt 40 inch Electric Smoker Mod# 20072612 on October 13, 2013 from Sam's Club for $299.00. The smoker worked great for about 5 uses and then began to trip my GFCI's. I had to run an extension cord from my non-GFCI in the garage in order to keep the unit on. I assumed there is a short in the wiring or mother board of the unit so I discontinued use for fear it may cause a fire. I just got off a long conversation with Masterbuilt customer support. They told me that they have a complete new box kit for this model. They will ship it too me and I will need to take the mother board, meat racks, and drip pans and water bucket accessories out of the original and install them in the new box kit.

Additionally, it will only cost me $107.00 plus $15.00 shipping. They told me that not to worry the new unit has had a complete wiring upgrade and I shouldn't experience this problem again. I asked them, why am I having to pay for this since the unit is less than 1 year old and they obviously knew the unit had a problem is why they upgraded the wiring in the new box kit. Well they said, it really didn't have a problem and that my unit issues must be just one of a few. I went ahead and paid for the new box kit (so I could at least have a smoker for another 5 or 6 uses) but explained to them that I will think twice before ever buying another Masterbuilt product if this is the way they stand behind their products. So with said, Buyer beware!!!

I bought my Masterbuilt Electric Smoker last summer (2013). Now, midsummer 2014, the thing blows the GCFI circuit as soon as the heat element is on for 10 seconds or so. I ran an extension cord to a not GCFI and was able to smoke a pork but that way. But of course all my outdoor outlets are GCFI. And there is obviously something wrong, and potentially unsafe about this unit. Using a non-GCFI outlet is a non-starter! I think this should be a RECALL. I will look into contacting support for satisfaction, but based on the stories I've been reading, I'm expecting no help from "master" built. I wish I'd found this information before I'd bought this unit! I have replaced the GCFI outlet (actually indoors in the kitchen, but part of the same circuit) and the outdoor outlet. Wasted money, like the MES, itself. I would be interested in any info on a reasonable fix. But I have a bad feeling this thing will be joining its siblings in the ** dump! If it goes that way, everyone I know will learn to avoid "Master" built products!

So started to wiggle the electric plug dial and notice the light kept going off and on so I Try wrap the cord to the handle to take the weight off the dial unit of the probe and it work fine. I think weight of the plug into the smoker does not make a good contact and temp gauge is off by 20*.

I purchased a high end Masterbuilt Smoker. 2 Smokers and 2 electronic failures. The 1st unit, the electronics control unit went immediately, since it was within 90 days they replaced. However in the next season, within 13 months, the entire unit failed. They suggested that perhaps the coil went out due to much wood or other "abuse". This was a new unit and was only used 3 times. I would work for the intended usage and purposes. Since they told me I was out of luck, I had moved to a new house and was eager to use a smoker again. I bought a new unit from them. I used it one time and everything worked as planned.

However upon the next use, it keeps shorting out all electric outlets. I have tried multiple outlets, no extension cords, etc. But it blows the fuse in every room. I am sick of these units. I have over $600 into these for essentially 4 uses. Their customer service is terrible but worse yet must be their engineers and quality control! DO NOT BUY MASTERBUILT! PURE JUNK.

I explained that I worked for a manufacturer of industrial power distribution equipment in the electrical engineering department. I said "I am taking the smoker to work and have the arc flash specialist (a doctor of electrical engineering) take a look at it. Then I will document his findings and send it to the CPSC to have this model added to the recall.........." The response was "What parts do you require sir?... We will send them to you." I replaced the heater element and wood box assembly, it's back working again.

The burner burned out on both units and the company told us they can't be replaced, sorry. Both units were 1 month out of warranty. About 600.00 completely wasted. Units that work for a couple uses and cannot be repaired. Unreal. And the company does nothing. Pathetic piece of equipment.

I am so extremely disappointed in my 8-month old Masterbuilt digital electric smoker. I loved it at first. So much so that about a month after purchasing mine, I got another one for my father in SC as a gift. After the 2nd Masterbuilt addition to the family, my brother came for a visit and less than 3 weeks later, we had a set of triplet Masterbuilt electric smokers in the family with cute little matching covers to protect our $380 (ea) investments. However, the honeymoon is over. My smoker is falling apart. It has been handled with care, cleaned only with vinegar, Dawn and hot water and lauded as the favorite appliance in or out of the house. First, the plastic in the door is cracking around the rivets much like any other plastic fastened on too tightly, it cracked. Three of the rivets in the top of the door have this defect. Second, the paint is chipping around the door.

No, I am a logical person. I expect any and every product I buy to eventually breakdown BUT not in less than a year. The paint is only gone on the unit on the inside where the door seal meets the unit. It is not peeling on the outside (where you would expect if it was left uncovered or abused). It is not peeling anywhere but that area where the door meets the unit. I called the company, sent pictures of the defects and the receipt. I was sent a door (which I appreciate) and that is all. I called back to advise them they must have missed the pictures of the defective paint. Again, I expect all paint to wear off eventually but not only in 1 area and not so soon. If it was time for the paint to be old and need to just be repainted, I would expect to see wear and tear everywhere or at least in another general location.

The unit looks as good as new except for around the door seal where it seems most important since it prevents heat from escaping through the door. I was told that they do not cover paint. I of course expected this to mean normal wear and tear of paint over time. I did not know this meant they would not stand by their product in case of either defective paint or defective application in one area. I was advised that I was free to buy another unit if the rust bothered me that much at full price plus shipping and handling, or just paint it. I asked the representative if she could ever expect me to purchase another Masterbuilt product if this was their standard of quality. She advised me that it was not by any means the standard (which I can attest 2 because the other 2 units in the family do not have this problem).

She spoke to a supervisor who agreed that even though it is not a common issue, they will not be able to stand by the poor quality of this particular unit. I am having visions of the new kid in the factory painting his 2 units ever and I was just lucky enough to get that one. I am beyond disappointed at this point because I have had so many cookouts which involved this product and told so many people how great it is and I am so embarrassed because if they have the same experience that I am having, it will reflect negatively on me. I can’t even imagine how a company who sells a higher end product could turn their backs so completely on an issue that even they admit is unusual and not standard. My unit is still under warranty. It is not paint chipping all over. It is not chipping on the outside. It has not been exposed to the elements. I even roll it onto the front porch when it rains and I want to cook something because I don’t want the electric elements to be affected.

I purchased a Masterbuilt 20070407 the day after Thanksgiving 2008. I have used this smoker maybe 10 times. I went to use the smoker and it kept blowing the outlet GFI. I attempted to use other outlets and it too would blow the outlet. So this problem told me something was wrong with the unit, not my plug-ins. A co-worker of mine bought this unit and literally a week prior to myself finding out my smoker was broke, my friend received a brand new smoker from Masterbuilt because of a wiring issue, which means blowing the GFI at his house. His smoker was 1 1/2 years old, mine 2 years by the purchase date.

I called customer service and was told sorry but your beyond one year warranty (fine) but then why did my co-worker get a brand new one beyond his one year warranty. They wouldn't discuss it. The other issue I have is that the warranty shows 90 days. Why move it to one year? I know to protect themselves because they knew the unit was junk. If I would have used the smoker more often maybe it would have shot craps within that year but for only using it 10 times is a cry from misuse. I believe Masterbuilt knows of their wiring problems and don't want to admit wrong doing. I have read problems that other people are having and it's textbook to my issues. You can't even buy parts for this unit. So the owner is basically screwed out of a $200 smoker. Masterbuilt did offer to sell me a unit for $150, which I told customer service that was a joke when I know my friend got one for free.

I'm out $200 from the purchase of the unit and no parts are even available to fix the unit. Customer service is not consistent regarding the replacing of the unit (like they did to my friend) or even offering parts. I believe Masterbuilt is fully aware of their problems and is trying to cover up the problem with their outrageous offer.
