We bought this electric smoker on QVC. Used it about seven times now it won't stay on and if you call Masterbuilt instead of them just sending you a part to fix your problem they want You to cut the electrical cord and email them a picture of the area where the cord was cut! I thought this was stupid and a waste of my time because if I call you and tell you what is wrong and you cannot send me a replacement part then you are telling me that your product is defective/a lemon and you want to put a band-aid on it and send me another lemon that might last a little longer! How about a Refund or maybe a class action lawsuit so all the consumers can get their money back and spend it on a worthy product? I am so pissed off I made payments on this thing through QVC and as soon as it was paid off it started acting up. Sure it was only 300.00 but I have nothing to show for it but another piece of embarrassing junk in my backyard that doesn't work!

I purchased a Masterbuilt smoker two years ago. I had used the unit only a half a dozen times when the unit began to trip a breaker. After several unsuccessful attempts to use the unit, I called Masterbuilt's customer service number. After being on hold for over an hour, I was told the issue was the heating element. Really, the heating element fails after 6 uses? I spent somewhere around $27 to have a new element sent to me. Once the element arrived, I spent an hour removing the old element and installing the new element. Upon plugging the unit in and starting it up... same problem. I won't spend another dime trying to fix it. (Same thing I told Masterbuilt) I will invest in a Kamado style smoker or pellet smoker and move on. Very disappointing to invest $300 in a smoker that works 6 times.

Updated on 08/22/2015: After contacting me, Masterbuilt offered to replace my unit and give me credit for the $27.99 I spent on a replacement heating coil. Masterbuilt offered to replace my unit for the sum of $181.00. I can't imagine why I would spend ANOTHER $181.00 on a replacement smoker when I spent $300 on my first smoker that lasted for 6 uses. I have no confidence that the new unit would be any better than its predecessor. I'm moving on to a Komodo smoker. No electric parts to go bad like on the Masterbuilt and much better quality. My Masterbuilt is headed to the recycle bin.

This smoker leaks around all four legs, and yes, it is level.

Updated 8/23/2015 - I have already sent a complaint several weeks ago and have not had a satisfactory reply. The smoker is on very level surface, leaks around all four legs and leaves a mess of grease. The smoker is only a couple of years old and is cleaned after every use. Will most likely replace it soon with a different brand. Please reply promptly.

Masterbuilt SE 30" - I bought this smoker at Cabellas last summer and used it five times. I kept it out of the weather too. I tried to use it this spring and it failed. Masterbuilt sent me a replacement control panel. It died the first time out. Masterbuilt then asked me to destroy the cabinet and send photos to them as proof so they could send me a complete new setup. I got the second smoker to work once with a lot of frustration getting it to take the temperature and time programming. Now it will not work at all. I have had it with this company.

I purchased this smoker from QVC two years ago. I have only used it a dozen times or so. It stopped working during July 4th weekend and after I found the heating element had failed. I used my multi-tester to do a continuity test and it failed. There were no apparent breaks in the element but I had no reading on the meter. I went through what several people have reported, extremely long periods of time on the phone waiting to speak to someone from Masterbuilt. I assumed lots of people used their smokers during the holiday weekend which resulted in a spike of breakdowns. The recording which played while I was on hold kept repeating they were experiencing an unusually high load of callers at this time and I should be patient. Two days later and my third attempt to call them resulted in over an hour on hold before I was told that I was 5th in their queue and should be patient.

It took another half hour for them to pick up and I was told that the part I needed was on backorder until 7/21. They would call me when the part came in to place an order. I called them back on 7/22 because I didn't hear from them and the wait on hold was still long but not as bad as the first time. The rep from Masterbuilt said the element that I was waiting for did not come in and there was a mistake made with their order. The element would be on backorder for another two or three weeks. I was not going to wait a total of five weeks so I explored other options. The only other source for a heating element for a Masterbuilt smoker is appliancefactoryparts.com. I attempted to order an element from them at more than twice the cost only to find out that they also were out of stock and their backorder was going to be three weeks.

First of all, the smoker should not have failed after so few uses. Secondly, the replacement part should not be this hard to replace. I am stuck like most that have reported problems here in that I have too much money in this product to simply throw it away and I leery of spending more money. I am going to wait until the potential backorder period has ended (summer will be over) and I am going to call Masterbuilt again. If I have to wait on hold for an hour, or if I the part is still on backorder, I will have spent the last nickel on a Masterbuilt product ever. I will then start looking for a product that is supported better than what Masterbuilt produces. I will report here again when that time comes with the result.

I had a smoker (a different brand) that I used for years but it just got old and died. I received the Masterbuilt Signature as a present. What a disappointment. It heats up good but the most important part is will it smoke? Not very well. If you put chips in before it get up to temp it will smoke while it's reaching the desired temp. If you wait until it gets up to temp it takes at least an hour before any smoke appears. Also, if you are cooking for several hours it's a total frustration to get smoke. Each time you add new chips you must open the door, empty the ashtray and then leave the door open until the temp goes down 30-40 degrees before you close. Otherwise the chips just lay there and never burn. I'm sure this would make a good roaster but as a smoker it's pretty crappy.

Purchased electric 40" smoker from Masterbuilt at Sam's Club. Used it maybe a total of ten times. I started to use it on Memorial day and it tripped circuit breaker, I rest breaker and tripped again. I then moved it to a dedicated circuit 30 amp and it tripped again. Called Masterbuilt customer service on 6/10/15 and after being on hold for some 45 minutes, talked to a lady there that said she would ship out another heating element for the smoker. She also said that she had not heard of these heating elements being problematic in these smokers and I replied "just go online and type in Masterbuilt electric smoker problems". I waited for the heating element to come in and after 5 weeks -- nothing!

Call back today 7/14/15 and after being on hold 52 minutes, and having a direct extension to call back to a guy there said that these elements were on back order and should ship out on or around 7/22/15 -- I WON'T HOLD MY BREATH! It is wrong to knowingly sell something to consumers for $300.00 dollars that will not last 12 uses. They need to do their homework and address the problems with the units. I received this smoker as a Christmas gift last year. I used it ONCE. I brought it out this year for the 4th of July and lo and behold just like most on this website, it is tripping circuit breakers. The control panel seems to be just fine. It will take directions for temp and time, starts and 10 seconds later it is off. It is very disappointing that something that costs so much is so shoddily built but then that is the nature of having a design issue, or being built in CHINA. US products are usually very well designed. I wouldn't wish this kind of workmanship or design on anyone.

It is the cost that really irritates me and lost time, having to change plans. I'm writing this while on hold to the company for the past 57:66 min. WAIT, WAIT; I am connected to customer service, they indicated the element is probably bad and are sending one out as a courtesy. They don't have any at this time though so I will be on a list. I guess I will end this here and comment if they follow through and it fixes the problem. Mod 20072612. Element is priced at 21.99 +shipping if another is needed. I don't expect I will ever do this again. I'll find another brand and research it before I buy.

Third developed a short and plastic overlay on control broke to pieces, even under covered patio in 18 months. Still open on what they will do after a week waiting. Only problem, short though caused by heating element, under warranty. Back ordered, expected in 3 weeks. Really SUCKS that Customer Service can't order anything not in stock! I experienced the same problems as several other reviewers. I happen to know an experienced electrician and we both investigated what is happening to the Masterbuilt unit. As the temperature inside the smoker approaches the set temperature, an increasing amount of current is directed to the ground wire. Eventually this trips the circuit. This is why the smoker works as it is heating up to temperature and why, after you discover the tripped circuit and reset it, it works again for a while - right up until you reach your set temperature. Of course, we had to pretty much rip the controls apart to see this and, as a few of you have correctly said, plugging this unit into a non-ground fault circuit is just too dangerous.

11/26/2014 - I put our Thanksgiving turkey in the 2 yr old smoker at approximately 10 pm. I set the temp at 225. I set the timer for 11 hrs and went to bed. I was awakened at 1:45 am to the voice of my wife telling me that the smoker was on fire. I ran downstairs to see the smoker was definitely burning. I had used this smoker many times without any issues. I had placed the smoker on the back porch which was just beginning to burn. The entire unit was burning on the inside between the walls. The fire was coming out of the control panel and also at the bottom of the unit on each side of the door. I was able to unplug the unit and put out the fire with water. Luckily my wife had slept downstairs with our infant grandchild and woke up just in time to save our home and possibly 6 lives. Our only loss was a turkey and a smoker. The next people may not be as fortunate as we were. Thank you.

My story is the same as Rich & Dennis. I purchased the smoker on April 2014 at Sam's Club. I used it 6 times. Starting in September, it trips this GFI as soon as it starts to heat. With the cost of this product I expected much more. Something at this price point should last longer than 6 months / 6 uses. I would recommend anyone to avoid this product. There does need to be a recall. This is my second bad experience with MB, I had a 30" that completely stopped working after 2.5 years, my mistake giving this brand another chance.

I actually have two smokers, one with the digital control, the other has the thermostat with the knob on the side. I've had both quite a while (6 or 7 yrs) and I keep them outside. No special care. I've replaced the seal and a wire clip on the digital and the element just went out on the other. Other than that I've really enjoyed them. I'm sure I'm going to buy another element whether it's OEM or after market if I can find one. Yes the one with the bad element tripped the breaker and was slow heating.

Bought all the accessories, meat and marinated for Indian Tandoori and Caribbean Jerk chicken in the refrigerator. I was so excited to use the smoker for the first time in my life because I was watching it on QVC and drooling myself every time I watch it. On 10/14/2014 I set it to preheat around 4pm and waited for like half an hour. The controller was reading at 90F and then started dropping. I was like what the heck is happening... and that is how I ended up being here to tell the story.

When I got this from Sam's Club, I got 3 years extended warranty which was giving me 5years in total but after reading this forum, now i made up my mind that I do not need this useless and dangerous product near my house. So, my first MES goes back to Sam's Club and never look back again for the brand called Masterbuilt. I think this is the reason Costco stopped selling them... NO WONDER THEY JUST GIVE YOU 90 DAY WARRANTY!!! BECAUSE IT DOESN'T EVEN LAST 9 DAYS!!! Yes, my recommendation is, if I were you, I would definitely stay away from MASTERBUILT product entirely.

I purchased a Masterbuilt 40 inch Electric Smoker Mod# 20072612 on October 13, 2013 from Sam's Club for $299.00. The smoker worked great for about 5 uses and then began to trip my GFCI's. I had to run an extension cord from my non-GFCI in the garage in order to keep the unit on. I assumed there is a short in the wiring or mother board of the unit so I discontinued use for fear it may cause a fire. I just got off a long conversation with Masterbuilt customer support. They told me that they have a complete new box kit for this model. They will ship it too me and I will need to take the mother board, meat racks, and drip pans and water bucket accessories out of the original and install them in the new box kit.

Additionally, it will only cost me $107.00 plus $15.00 shipping. They told me that not to worry the new unit has had a complete wiring upgrade and I shouldn't experience this problem again. I asked them, why am I having to pay for this since the unit is less than 1 year old and they obviously knew the unit had a problem is why they upgraded the wiring in the new box kit. Well they said, it really didn't have a problem and that my unit issues must be just one of a few. I went ahead and paid for the new box kit (so I could at least have a smoker for another 5 or 6 uses) but explained to them that I will think twice before ever buying another Masterbuilt product if this is the way they stand behind their products. So with said, Buyer beware!!!

I bought my Masterbuilt Electric Smoker last summer (2013). Now, midsummer 2014, the thing blows the GCFI circuit as soon as the heat element is on for 10 seconds or so. I ran an extension cord to a not GCFI and was able to smoke a pork but that way. But of course all my outdoor outlets are GCFI. And there is obviously something wrong, and potentially unsafe about this unit. Using a non-GCFI outlet is a non-starter! I think this should be a RECALL. I will look into contacting support for satisfaction, but based on the stories I've been reading, I'm expecting no help from "master" built. I wish I'd found this information before I'd bought this unit! I have replaced the GCFI outlet (actually indoors in the kitchen, but part of the same circuit) and the outdoor outlet. Wasted money, like the MES, itself. I would be interested in any info on a reasonable fix. But I have a bad feeling this thing will be joining its siblings in the ** dump! If it goes that way, everyone I know will learn to avoid "Master" built products!

So started to wiggle the electric plug dial and notice the light kept going off and on so I Try wrap the cord to the handle to take the weight off the dial unit of the probe and it work fine. I think weight of the plug into the smoker does not make a good contact and temp gauge is off by 20*.

I purchased a high end Masterbuilt Smoker. 2 Smokers and 2 electronic failures. The 1st unit, the electronics control unit went immediately, since it was within 90 days they replaced. However in the next season, within 13 months, the entire unit failed. They suggested that perhaps the coil went out due to much wood or other "abuse". This was a new unit and was only used 3 times. I would work for the intended usage and purposes. Since they told me I was out of luck, I had moved to a new house and was eager to use a smoker again. I bought a new unit from them. I used it one time and everything worked as planned.

However upon the next use, it keeps shorting out all electric outlets. I have tried multiple outlets, no extension cords, etc. But it blows the fuse in every room. I am sick of these units. I have over $600 into these for essentially 4 uses. Their customer service is terrible but worse yet must be their engineers and quality control! DO NOT BUY MASTERBUILT! PURE JUNK.

I explained that I worked for a manufacturer of industrial power distribution equipment in the electrical engineering department. I said "I am taking the smoker to work and have the arc flash specialist (a doctor of electrical engineering) take a look at it. Then I will document his findings and send it to the CPSC to have this model added to the recall.........." The response was "What parts do you require sir?... We will send them to you." I replaced the heater element and wood box assembly, it's back working again.

The burner burned out on both units and the company told us they can't be replaced, sorry. Both units were 1 month out of warranty. About 600.00 completely wasted. Units that work for a couple uses and cannot be repaired. Unreal. And the company does nothing. Pathetic piece of equipment.

I am so extremely disappointed in my 8-month old Masterbuilt digital electric smoker. I loved it at first. So much so that about a month after purchasing mine, I got another one for my father in SC as a gift. After the 2nd Masterbuilt addition to the family, my brother came for a visit and less than 3 weeks later, we had a set of triplet Masterbuilt electric smokers in the family with cute little matching covers to protect our $380 (ea) investments. However, the honeymoon is over. My smoker is falling apart. It has been handled with care, cleaned only with vinegar, Dawn and hot water and lauded as the favorite appliance in or out of the house. First, the plastic in the door is cracking around the rivets much like any other plastic fastened on too tightly, it cracked. Three of the rivets in the top of the door have this defect. Second, the paint is chipping around the door.

No, I am a logical person. I expect any and every product I buy to eventually breakdown BUT not in less than a year. The paint is only gone on the unit on the inside where the door seal meets the unit. It is not peeling on the outside (where you would expect if it was left uncovered or abused). It is not peeling anywhere but that area where the door meets the unit. I called the company, sent pictures of the defects and the receipt. I was sent a door (which I appreciate) and that is all. I called back to advise them they must have missed the pictures of the defective paint. Again, I expect all paint to wear off eventually but not only in 1 area and not so soon. If it was time for the paint to be old and need to just be repainted, I would expect to see wear and tear everywhere or at least in another general location.

The unit looks as good as new except for around the door seal where it seems most important since it prevents heat from escaping through the door. I was told that they do not cover paint. I of course expected this to mean normal wear and tear of paint over time. I did not know this meant they would not stand by their product in case of either defective paint or defective application in one area. I was advised that I was free to buy another unit if the rust bothered me that much at full price plus shipping and handling, or just paint it. I asked the representative if she could ever expect me to purchase another Masterbuilt product if this was their standard of quality. She advised me that it was not by any means the standard (which I can attest 2 because the other 2 units in the family do not have this problem).

She spoke to a supervisor who agreed that even though it is not a common issue, they will not be able to stand by the poor quality of this particular unit. I am having visions of the new kid in the factory painting his 2 units ever and I was just lucky enough to get that one. I am beyond disappointed at this point because I have had so many cookouts which involved this product and told so many people how great it is and I am so embarrassed because if they have the same experience that I am having, it will reflect negatively on me. I can’t even imagine how a company who sells a higher end product could turn their backs so completely on an issue that even they admit is unusual and not standard. My unit is still under warranty. It is not paint chipping all over. It is not chipping on the outside. It has not been exposed to the elements. I even roll it onto the front porch when it rains and I want to cook something because I don’t want the electric elements to be affected.

I purchased a Masterbuilt 20070407 the day after Thanksgiving 2008. I have used this smoker maybe 10 times. I went to use the smoker and it kept blowing the outlet GFI. I attempted to use other outlets and it too would blow the outlet. So this problem told me something was wrong with the unit, not my plug-ins. A co-worker of mine bought this unit and literally a week prior to myself finding out my smoker was broke, my friend received a brand new smoker from Masterbuilt because of a wiring issue, which means blowing the GFI at his house. His smoker was 1 1/2 years old, mine 2 years by the purchase date.

I called customer service and was told sorry but your beyond one year warranty (fine) but then why did my co-worker get a brand new one beyond his one year warranty. They wouldn't discuss it. The other issue I have is that the warranty shows 90 days. Why move it to one year? I know to protect themselves because they knew the unit was junk. If I would have used the smoker more often maybe it would have shot craps within that year but for only using it 10 times is a cry from misuse. I believe Masterbuilt knows of their wiring problems and don't want to admit wrong doing. I have read problems that other people are having and it's textbook to my issues. You can't even buy parts for this unit. So the owner is basically screwed out of a $200 smoker. Masterbuilt did offer to sell me a unit for $150, which I told customer service that was a joke when I know my friend got one for free.

I'm out $200 from the purchase of the unit and no parts are even available to fix the unit. Customer service is not consistent regarding the replacing of the unit (like they did to my friend) or even offering parts. I believe Masterbuilt is fully aware of their problems and is trying to cover up the problem with their outrageous offer.
