Service Magic/HomeAdvisor sucks, plain and simple. They force customers to get phone responses from their vendors. There is NO OPTION to get e-mail responses. When I called in, they lied to me about this saying that they could set it up on their end, so that I didn't receive phone calls.

New roof - Got 3 prices, took the lowest one. Wish I had never signed the sales contract! The contractor said they would be out in 2 to 3 weeks. Knowing I had a leak, they did not show up to the middle of week 5! I had to put buckets out to try and catch the water. Posted a complaint on the HomeAdvisor site. They pulled it saying that's not what we allow on their site. I emailed them back and said "what you don't allow the truth." Buyer beware!!!

Not sure I will use HomeAdvisor anymore. I put in the jobs I needed done, and hit the Do Not Call button and everyone called anyway. I find this annoying as I would like to investigate the companies being suggested before they start bombarding me with phone calls. After putting in for gutter cleaning I now have a company sending me emails about getting new gutters which I am not interested in. Might be Green Leaf Gutter Company? Then I get emails from HomeAdvisor about my experience before I have had a chance to get the work done. Not happy at all this time around.

The best experience yet! We just hired Outdoor Lighting LLC for landscape lighting for the front of our home. ** and ** did everything we ask of them. They made three trips to our home to set up different ways the lights could be set up. When my husband and I saw the third setup we knew they were on to exactly what we were looking for. As soon as it was dark enough to really see how the lighting looked, I was on the phone telling them "This is it! When can we get on your schedule?" I would highly recommend Outdoor Lighting LLC to anyone looking to have landscape lighting added to their landscape or upgrade from Malibu lighting. ** and ** were great to work with and we are very pleased with their work. I hired J&K Handyman Service, Crestview, FL to do $10,000 worth of remodel work on a house in Baker, FL. He had 5 star ratings at the time. He required half down, which I paid. It was supposed to be a two week job. He didn't start working on the project until toward the end of the two weeks and then only worked a few hours each day. We had to have him re-do work. He started saying I was making changes. I made two changes. Other things he had to change were because of his oversight and errors.

He wanted $2000 for change orders. He has spent no more $500 on supplies. But, he said he needed the money to continue working. I refused to pay that. He walked off the job. His wife kept lying to me. I was having a window replaced with a door. It had to be ordered. She said the first door received was dented and had to be returned; she told me the next door was also dented and had to be returned. After he walked off the job I checked with the store. The door had never been ordered!

I ordered tile for the back splash and floor and paid half. J&K was supposed to pay for supplies. After he walked off, I checked & they had never picked up the tile (They had been notified it was in.) I paid the second half and had it delivered to the house. I was going to write a review for them, but they have removed their name. Another couple of bad reviews were written for the time frame as well. I have pictures on my cell phone of what was done.

The truth about Homeadvisor leads is very clear when you start receiving them. They get the leads however they can regardless of relevancy. They have take leads from other companies and even them on their own have created third party web pages that collect people's info that they charge you for. Their service is reprehensible and I would love to get my hands on some of the customer service dopes.

It's a terrible business practice and they should realize that if they were honest and told people they were charging contractors for leads, they would only get serious clients and then in turn could charge much more for each lead because they are quality. Homeadvisor used to be servicemagic and there is a reason they changed names, unfortunately the old reputation has followed them because they are worthless pieces of trash.

But when they called later in the week to confirm the appointment was asked again what I wanted done and they said they couldn't do it. No changes only replace what was there. No walls could be added, no plumbing changed, which is pretty hard to do when you want the tub removed and enlarge existing shower they called me every day for 3 or 4 days until I finally answered to get me to make an appt. I truly respect that HA follow ups on negative reviews on the companies that provide services. The other service provider site never followed up with me. In my case, Titan Remodeling did a poor job of my kitchen, floor, fireplace, and bathroom remodels. I gave a poor review and Titan denied it. HA called me to get clarification on my comments. I informed them that I photographs to support my comments. I understood that they would send me a link to send the photos but I did not receive it. It looks like I can add photos here of the substandard work that Titan provided. My rating above is on HA not Titan. These photos support my review of Titan Remodeling.

Poor painting, nails protruding through cabinets, kitchen cabinet hinges held on by only a one or two screws, cracked tile that was glued instead of replaced, kitchen cabinets were installed without screws in the studs at the top, granite was cut incorrectly for chosen sink, backsplash was poorly cut and grouted, fireplace tile was poorly cut, fireplace glass screen was broken and never replaced, mantel was only painted one coat. Team painted cabinets in my back yard and got paint on my pool concrete, flooded my back yard when they left the hose on cleaning the paint brushes, locked me out of the home two times and left construction debris that I called 2x for Titan removal which never occurred. I finally had to coordinate for removal at my own expense. I stand by my rating of Titan on the HA website as Dissatisfied.

In late summer of 2014 we added on to a residence and moved into the building as our residence. I contacted several HVAC contractors - most of whom failed to return my phone calls or finally returned them after a week or two. Then I sought the service through HomeAdvisor. The HVAC contractor I contacted through HomeAdvisor answered his phone promptly and stopped out the next day to review the proposed project. He did the job within a week - at 50% less than one other estimate I did receive. And, his work was excellent!

For the moving job, I visited several websites, called the company most likely to be able to fulfill our needs. After giving them all the particulars, there were too many "except fors" and "buts" in their pricing and service schemes to be able to lock down a solid moving cost figure. So, I again sought a better source through HomeAdvisor. They recommended a company who quoted about $1,800 to do the job - with no ifs, ands or buts as to the timing and cost. I hired them and they not only did an excellent job but did the job for less than $1,500 - based on the time it took and the distance involved. I would highly recommend HomeAdvisor as a source of assistance for any jobs you need done.

We had two rooms with carpeting that we wanted to remove and install hard-wood flooring. It took us quite a while, and job is still incomplete in that we've had to go on hold for a while due to other things. We had two companies recommended - Carpets To Go and International Flooring Co. We called both and got estimates. We had lots of questions, got lots of answers; chose one company (Carpet-to-Go) whose estimate was slightly lower than the other. Twice, we had 2-man crews come in to do the work. Took several days: move furniture (we did the easy stuff, workmen did the harder stuff). Then remove old carpeting, clean the area, and install unfinished hardwood flooring.

As per our choice, we had them sand a large area of older hardwood flooring that was discolored and had damages in several areas adjoining the new flooring. Then we watched as they prepared three new stain-colors; we chose one to match an adjoining room. Stain was applied, then on subsequent days, two coats of sealers were applied. Still to-do is to re-carpet a stairway in our daughter's house, and (when we are financially able to complete project) re-do another room that now has old carpeting which will also go to be hardwood flooring. Workmen did a very good job, and they worked very hard at what they did. We would highly recommend Carpet To Go for any similar job.

He didn't show up when he said he would. I had to call him to find out why and get the information he said he would send. And, he didn't follow through on a second request. The whole process is to try and scheme you out of much as cash as possible. It's a constant ploy to squeeze every penny out of the consumer as possible from DAY ONE. Don't believe me? I'll give you a breakdown of how it works:

1a. Start Up Fee - Other Sites do not request this (Mine was $100).
2a. Lead Flow - Leads come in and you CANNOT deny them. My leads cost anywhere from $14-$30.
2b. Lead Flow - You can 'Pause' them, but ONLY for 14 days.
2c. Lead Flow - You can lower your 'Monthly Cost' but $100 a month is MINIMUM.
3a. Cancellation Process - Slow your leads for 14 days and then they come right back.

3b. Cancellation Process - NO OPTION to do this online. You MUST call a 'Cancellation Rep'.

Here's how this company could make money and stop taking everyone's money like scavenging trolls.
    1. Allow Cancellation Online at ANYTIME.
    2. Allow to 'Pause' Lead flow for as MANY days as the Customer wants.
    3. Stop Charging a ridiculous Start Up fee.
    4. Allow the people paying (Me) to decide when I want to pay, not when you want me to pay.

    5. Stop acting like my money is your money. I signed up for a service not an automatic pay system to put money in your scheming troll pockets.

The whole business model is lazy and setup to benefit ONLY Home Advisor. 1 Star- Because the people I met through Home Advisor (Three) were fantastic people.

Update: I was going to show a screenshot of the Lead Flow ridiculousness, but apparently... Once you have selected 'Turn On' leads, you cannot 'Shut Off' leads in the same day. Imagine that...

I've had numerous reps tell me to pause my leads and that caused me to forget that I had an account with them. They then just charged me for a renewal on a service that had never brought me a lead, and the service they provided which did bring leads in the past hadn't been used for 6 months. 80% of their leads are people trying to get a bunch of quick estimates.

Want contractor leads? Nothing works like the old fashioned way of engaging the actual customers and providing them with a great service they value. So HomeAdvisor has contacted our company on 3 different occasion in the last year to sign up. Always a different salesperson. They tell you very deceptive facts about their service. The only way to sell their service is to tell you it only costs 81 bucks right now and it's going up to 119 if you don't sign up now. Then they tell you leads cost about 16 bucks. After requesting an actual chart of lead prices it turns out those prices are closer to 40 and 50 dollars per lead. Then they sign you up on a ten day free trial which is nothing more than fake leads with no info meant to entice and tease you to sign up. They also don't know your area at all and send you leads from areas you would never travel to, Their sales team is also given absolutely no ability to sell their service. They can't give you a real sample lead, they can't negotiate a trial use. They give no free leads every month which in my humble opinion should be offered with the trimonthly charge they do.

Once their sales people lose faith in the fact you are going to sign up they get real short with you and shut down. Upon telling their rep they aren't working with me and they are sending me leads from outside my area, I get this response, "Listen, I don't have your account anymore and I am just a sale consultant. I just work here. I'm sorry you aren't happy and that my company couldn't help your company. I'll forward this email to the power above me. Please have a great day." - **, followed by: "I don't know why you are being rude to me when all I did was try to help you out! You don't know me. You don't know my life, so why email HATE?!!! So like I said, I'm sorry it didn't work out for you."

Stay away from these people is my suggestion. Spend your money on local advertising. I could see if you were a new company with no references that this may be useful for a short time. But other than that, all I got was a sense of greed and dishonesty from everyone I dealt with there. And I usually don't take the time to write reviews about anything. But these people are something of a special nature.

We had used HomeAdvisor for about a year and decided to drop them last fall. The reason why we dropped them is simple. HomeAdvisor pays to sit at the top of Google search and advertises for various construction projects. Homeowners searching for a contractor click on their link and fill out a form. HomeAdvisor then sell the prospects information to paying contractors as leads. I don't have a problem with this at all. The unfortunate issue that I have is that HomeAdvisor says that they screen their contractors, but they really don't.

Then they also sell the prospects info to 10-20 different local contractors. I personally had to pay $68 per lead I received. I don't mind paying $68 for a lead, in fact that's pretty cheap for a good lead. Unfortunately, these are TERRIBLE leads. Customers are getting blanketed with 10-20 immediate phone calls and after about 5 calls, they don't even pick up their phones. There were several "leads" that I got charged for that I couldn't even talk to because they got flooded with calls. I spoke to a homeowner that I did get to and he said he would never use HomeAdvisor again because he received over 10 calls within a half hour. Two of the contractors that he have come out he would let near his house.

As a professional contractor, I will never use and never advise anyone to use HomeAdvisor. It's great for the fly-by-night guys who have trouble finding work, but not for a professional looking to build his business. As far as getting out, HomeAdvisor does NOT have a feature on their website to cancel your account. They basically hold you hostage and auto renew your credit card. It took me over three month and several strongly worded phone calls to severe ties with them. Buyer beware.

They take your money and never really give it back. I spent a few hundred dollars calling people who didn't need service. I spent more time on the phone with Homeadvisor customer service than I did calling bogus leads. Complete waste of time and money. I'll be the first on board for the impending Class Action Law Suit. I will admit that at first I was skeptical with home advisor mainly because of a number of unsuccessful leads, a few bad, and some issues with customer service. However as time passed and more experience gained using the program, not to mention expanding my zip codes and category of work performed, I have more work coming in than I had originally thought possible. What I had failed to realize in the beginning is that some time is needed in order for a network to be created. I am more than satisfied with Home Advisor and would recommend it to both home owners and working professionals.

Overall: Improper installation of new furnace, since corrected, five years after installation, so my problem is not with the installing company; my issue is with HomeAdvisor, who refused to post my 5 year experience. Angieslist posted it without any questions asked. A few weeks ago I was contacted by someone from HomeAdvisor to check on the review; he gave me an email address to send more details (receipts) about this review and a previous review that is incorrectly recorded on their website. Unfortunately, that email address turned out to be incorrect.

Details: Sullivan Super Service Pittsburgh installed a new high-efficiency furnace in our house on 3/11/2010. The cost to us was $5,393.00. Over the years, while the furnace appeared to be working fine, we kept getting notices, during the winter months, from our utility company that we were using more power than comparable neighbors. This was in spite of the fact that we lowered the temperature to 72 when the house was occupied and to 58 when it was not occupied, or we were sleeping.

On 2/20/15, I found on inspection of the furnace that there was a visible gap (about 2) between the furnace forced air heat outflow duct and the main house HVAC duct. While the furnace was on I could feel the hot air escaping from this gap into the basement. In other words the forced-air from the furnace was escaping into the basement, even before it had a chance to heat the house. This appears to explain the problems we are experiencing with using too much power during winter months and inability to maintain a modest temperature in the winter with a high efficiency furnace.

    Hi Steven,

We apologize for any frustration you have experienced with your hiring process. Per the terms and conditions of our rating system, a condition that is necessary to leave a review is that work must have been completed or monies exchanged for the work to have been done. We have found through our prior discussions with you that neither criteria has been met. We do provide multiple pre-screened contractors and would recommend looking for additional bids if you are not pleased with bids you have received.

My company has used ServiceMagic, HomeAdvisor for more than 5 years and have paid for more than 1600 leads. My complaint with them is their policy of denying any lead credits for whatever reason if it is beyond 30 days for when the lead charge was incurred. I have had duplicate leads and leads that were sent to us during times when we had requested the leads to be placed on hold, not be issued credit. That is inexcusable as far as I am concerned!

Additionally, in order to receive credit for previously issued leads (duplicates), I have to spend my time re-entering every lead name back into their search box to do my own detective work to see if I had been previously been given and charged for this lead (weeks, months, years earlier). I have uncovered even more lead duplicates when I had converted their lead information into an Excel file and was able to screen information based on address, phone number, etc...

If you are not wise to opening multiple tabs on your web browser, there is no easy way to request a credit from a duplicate lead. Their website design, I would hazard to say, is intentional in not being user-friendly in that regard.

I often request leads to be turned off for the weekend using my smartphone. HomeAdvisor has a mobile app. For example, I requested on Thursday 2/26/15 to have leads turned off for the weekend. This is the message I receive back, "Your leads are paused and will resume on 02/28/2015." The only problem is that 2/28/15 is a SATURDAY! How is that off for the weekend? Any credit requests for this beyond 30 days is also denied!!! Their own programming or lack of ability to read a calendar costs you as well.

Other times, even though I called within 15 min. of receiving text, already had too many calls to see me. HomeAdvisor exceeded the 200.00 limit almost every month; when called, had no explanation and refused to credit any money back. A few of the leads were other painters looking for work for which my firm was charged.

After numerous conversations, they credited me back with approximately 3 bogus leads, a drop in the bucket. After exceeding the 200.00, after stating they would not, I cancelled. They then proceeded to reverse credits and added on bogus charges and hit me with a final 187.00 fee. I refused to pay and they threatened me with collection and ruining my credit. HomeAdvisor contacted me about "advertising" my construction business on their site. I stupidly agreed to an initial $90 charge for a "supposed" background check. I'm pretty sure it was just a charge to validate my credit card #, because it took all of 90 seconds to complete. Originally the fees for the "exact customer match" that I was informed of were actually more than double the agreed amount. They later informed me that the fees they mentioned were for a whole different region, not my area. But according to them that wasn't their fault. And they refused to refund anything I had already been charged for.

The next thing were the leads from customers that weren't interested in actually hiring anybody and I wasn't able to even contact most of the leads I was sent. Yet I was still charged a fee for every match that was sent. Next issue was that they were asking for services I didn't even offer on the HA website. The only viable lead I received was for an hour of handyman work. That was about $40 of paid work with a $25 fee to pay to HA. Huge profit margin. I was again told it isn't HA fault for bad leads even though that's what they are getting paid for.

"Warning to all contractors and consumers": Do not contact HomeAdvisor about any services. They do not offer a legitimate service and should be investigated by the Better Business Bureau. I will be filing my own complaint with the BBC. I decided to call a few of these companies and request quotes. I called the first company on my list and a Home Advisor representative picked up. She expressed her gratitude for calling Home Advisor and said she sees that I am interested in calling this flooring company. I was confused on why the phone number listed on the website under the flooring company was answered by Home Advisor.

The representative stated that some companies choose to contract Home Advisor to manage prospective customer calls. A red flag went up in my mind, and I chose to end the call. I then researched reviews on Home Advisor outside of their website and was shocked at how consistently other consumers rated Home Advisor so poorly. I used to be a paint contractor with ServiceMagic.... When I got tired of their false leads and bogus credits, I quit, leaving them an $11.00 balance, which they hunted me down for a long time. I was sorry that I didn't leave a balance for $10,000, instead of the paltry eleven... Then I got romanced by HomeAdvisor, who assured me that they changed their name along with their practices and that everything was different and better now, such as the most important change being that now they "QUALIFY" every lead before sending it to their contractors, eliminating the drunk dialer, the window shopper, the prankster, etc. So, I signed up again (and paid that eleven dollars I owed) and I have to admit that my first 4-6 months was pretty good. I closed on some good job leads, and didn't on others, which is the name of the game.

Then, it started to happen again. I got charged for leads that didn't even include a contact number, or that wanted a service that I didn't provide, or didn't even mention a service. Once again, I started to request a credit, as you simply CANNOT get them on the phone..... Three credits were denied. I threatened to quit, and then I got 2 "bogus" leads, which cost me a lot of money.... In order to satisfy the credit they issued me, they gave me 2 leads of people looking to borrow money for a mortgage, and thought that "HomeAdvisor" would steer them in the right direction. Now they think we're even. We're not. They never reimburse the money they take out, they simply throw you a similar-priced bogus lead to shut you up.

    Updated review: March 31, 2015

They ended up contacting me and fixing the situation. I still gave 3 stars because of the trouble they put people through to get issues resolved.

    Original Review: Feb. 3, 2015

On 9/3/2014 I spoke with a rep named Debbie to cancel my account. She told me I had credits on my account and that the next 3 months would be cheaper. I agreed to continue to use up the credits and asked that my account still be cancelled at the end of the 3 month term. Lo and behold on 12/3/2014 my credit card was charged. I immediately called in to have this refunded and they refused up and down. I called back in on 12/12 to speak with a supervisor about the situation and a possible fix. I informed her of my conversation with their rep. Corrine told me she would look up the phone call and get back to me. No response whatsoever for the next month. So I went through my credit card company to dispute the charge.

My credit card company did not hear back from Home Advisor and in turn cancelled the payment. Then on 1/28/2015 I received a "Final Notice" saying they were going to send me to collections for $100.99. The breakdown was $80.99 for service from 12/3 - 3/3 (which I was not getting) and for a $20 credit card chargeback even though they did not attempt to respond to my credit card company. It is now 2/3 and I called in to avoid collections. I spoke with Barbara a Supervisor who said the best they could do was lower the charge to $50. She refused to even contact the original rep who said they would listen to my call and that the only option was to pay $50 or go to collections. She told me blatantly that they did not believe me about their original rep telling me the account would not renew nor would they investigate the call. Sad how a company can hold you hostage like this.

I've been on both sides of the aisle with this company. As a business owner and as professional and as a homeowner/consumer.

As a homeowner: I tried this company to locate professionals to provide services as my newly purchased home. I got leads from companies I had never heard of and who lacked experience in their so-called area of expertise. Never hire someone who lacks references in your immediate area.

As a business owner: At the same time I purchased my new home, I tried using them for new business. 95% of the leads were bogus. Due to the large amount of "ghost" or bogus leads, I started doing a Google search on their leads' names and their addresses, which as you know, is provided with each lead. What I discovered was that most leads were fictitious, some of the homes, based upon their lead's addresses were actually vacant homes.

The topper was when I discovered (after a Google search) that one man (business lead) was actually arrested and sitting in the Du Page County jail for theft - that was over the top! The Google search had the full written news story that was published in one of our local newspapers indicating the man's complete names and address, which corresponded with the Home Advisor lead information sheet which they (Home Advisor) had emailed to our office. I sent his information to their management and without any difficulty, I received a full refund for all the money and our account was closed. Based upon this information, I would highly advised anyone from using the services of this company!

After getting sent 7 leads which half I couldn't get a hold of, they're charging me over 300.00 dollars. I really think they don't care if you get the calls or not. They send these leads to 3 other contractors so do the math. If you are thinking about signing up with them buyer beware and my condolences.

I was in the process of signing up to use HomeAdvisor for promoting my business. I understood their process and had no issue with it. However when they went to run the "background check" I failed and not because I have a background I have to pass multiple FBI background checks to be in my current profession. The problem is they don't run a real background check. They run some kind of public records search so if you share the same name as a convicted felon then get ready to be amazed. This is what happened in my case. It took me seconds to find out this guy is 20 years older than me. However HomeAdvisor now wants me to pay for an actual background check to "clear my name"...really!! Seriously!! First of all why did they need my social security number if they aren't gonna use it. Secondly how is it you're gonna say you run a background check when you're just searching for a name? I think that's very misleading. Also how thorough is it if someone has a common name? Lastly it is ridiculous to make people who want to use the service fix the broken process in their so called background check. They need to get their processes in order.

I was looking for a maid and was going to use Angie's List but saw it was a pay-service. Right under it was an ad for HomeAdvisors.. which appeared to be just a regular website, no fees. Just a portal to look for housekeeping services in your area but inputting your info (name/address/phone/service needed). As soon as I did this, it came up with matching results and asked if I wanted to be called or to just view the matches on my computer. I clicked view matches on computer. Not more than 60 seconds into looking at the matches to evaluate the companies.. reviews, etc.. I start keeping phone calls on my cell from maid services who said they were automatically given my phone number via email or text and charged a FEE that is automatically taken out of their account for being provided with my name/phone.

First woman asked me about coming out to give estimate. I hadn't even reviewed any of the matching businesses on my screen yet! And NOWHERE on this website does it say you are going to be getting phone calls. Nowhere does it say that merely providing your information is going to kick off a chain of events where every local housekeeping service will be automatically pinged with my info & money taken from these peoples accounts. That is crazy. 3 more maid services called me within 5 minutes!! I had to scramble around their website and go to "My Account" (didn't know I had even set up an account), and change my phone number to a 1111111 number so that the calls would cease.

I tried to call the business (4pm pacific time) and got a recording that business was closed although message said they are open until 11pm. There is no voicemail option. You just get disconnected. Sorry, but this REEKS of scam to me. I told the first maid who called me that she should not be letting any company automatically deduct money from her account just for providing her with the names/numbers of people who MIGHT be interested in cleaning services. How can this be legal? Someone should investigate them ASAP. I will call them tomorrow, earlier in day and see if I can reach anyone to complain.

When actually go to 4 or more people. They make you pay $79 to sign up and they said my leads would be no more the $20 - $25 per lead which is fair. After verification was being done I the contractor kept interrupting saying that is not what the caller told me. After about 4 times the original caller stated just say yes to the prompts. Upon phone conversation, received email and everything what I thought was going to be turned out different. The pricing was highlighted as a lot more money. I immediately email expressing my disapproval for the misleading of the original conversation. Not HAPPY THEY LIE UPFRONT AND TAKE YOUR $$$.

I went to HomeAdvisor.com because I qualified for a HE Loan and decided that it was time to get the rest of my house done, having broken tile on bathroom shower walls, and new flooring needed upstairs, as well as some downstairs work. I submitted my interest, deciding to start with the tile. I submitted a separate lead for flooring. I was connected with several contractors and 2 contacted me in response. I understand that it is because they are charged a monthly fee and then $60 per lead, if they take it, as a contractor told me.

The young man that came out was very nice and kind, and seemed to know his stuff. We talked about flooring, and I mentioned that I was getting tiling work done too, as well as some mortar and moldings, and he let me know that his company could fulfill all that I needed. He did give me references and they did check out, whether or not they were valid, which at this time I doubt.

It took me three months to get to the point of getting the work done, as my HOA delayed some insurance needs for my loan's final approval. When completed, I took care of urgent things first; consolidation, and then set money aside for the home and later, my son's first used car. I contacted the Contractor, and we signed a contract formally. He requested a 25% down deposit, and indicated the work would take two weeks, Monday through Friday. He cashed my check the next day and did not show up on start date, five days later. He did not call and he did not answer calls, emails or texts. I contacted HomeAdvisor.com the next day. They indicated to me that he had ended his contract in the month of December and that their steps were a COURTESY. I felt certain in much of their conversation that they were trained to take no accountability or responsibility. I questioned them about their pre-screening process and whether background checks were done, and I was told that they were.

After this incident, I did a lot of research on this contractor. At first, I found nothing. Then I found a great story where he rescued a dog. Then I found two good reviews (unauthenticated; Yelp) and one bad review (unauthenticated; Yelp). The bad review was similar to mine and the loss was $4000, with 1/4 of the work done only and then disappearance.

I have done a lot of internet research and did a background check. This contractor has between 7 and 10 offenses; some traffic, some felony, some non-disclosed without additional fees (yes, I gave Intelius a negative review for that). It was quite the rap sheet. With this information so easy to get, I suspect a lot of leniency on the part of HomeAdvisor.com and discourage individuals using them as a resource as you could get scammed as I did.

Then they kept sending home leads which we don't do and electrical business needs which needed to be met by an electrician. We would ask for credit, but that would take a week to get and they would bill us for the bogus leads every week. We finally cancelled after 2 1/2 months out of frustration. We have since been told that they will NOT credit our credit card because that's not how they do business, but they had no problem charging our card for wrong leads. I truly believe they suck people in and charge them as often as they can until you get frustrated and cancel and then find out they keep the money. Well "HA!" to that, for it turned out they were just a labor broker themselves and with a high turnover of so called "employees" and subcontractors. Yes, the "Pro Contractor" thoroughly qualified me and my helper for the intended work, asked all the right questions, that is but in reality had little actual experience, lacked even basic equipment (as opposed to personal tools), and caused unnecessary work delays. Not only that, but the HA qualified Pro-Contractor flatly refused to make good on the final balance due over $1,200 + attorney and lien fees. Worse yet, they're using photos of me and my work as bragging rights on the HomeAdvisor site! I brought all the factual details to HomeAdvisor's attention. So far (12/26/14) they haven't acknowledged or done a darn thing, and they won't publish my 1-Star review. One could say "The nut didn't fall from the tree" or "Like father, like son".

Here's the deal: You will land around 30-35% of your leads if you CONTACT LEAD IMMEDIATELY. The general public isn't aware that the HA client is paying for leads so they put in requests for lack of nothing to do. That's part of the process. For us, we may go through 10 leads that are worthless. Then hit a lead like we did last month for an outside mall landscaping that we bid on and got at 8K job. Spent $400 let's say for that lead. Worth it? Heck yes. If not happy, try Networx. $225.00 per month for unlimited leads. They ARE NOT AS GOOD as HA. Remember: HA advertises which is good. Last comment: Stay away from Angie's List. So far, only 1 of the remaining leads turned into a contract. The other real leads either did not get the work done, or went with someone else. However, there appears to be a way a customer can find contractors on the HomeAdvisor site that have a profile that fits their needs calling us directly. In this case, 9 out of 10 have turned out to be a contract. I suspect (like some of the comments say in this forum) since these people are taking the time to find a contractor rather than blindly seeing who responds to their request, they are serious about wanting a real contractor to do real work.

Expensive, yes. Time consuming yes. Refunds No. However, this site does provide a profile for us with reviews that is working when a customer takes the time to find us, rather than us finding them. We recently started a Facebook page and our website will be published this month. Let's see if these other media choices bring in different results.

We are a pest control company and were sent leads for Bees (different licensing and something we told them we did not handle) and termites (same as above). As each lead came through we called in to Home Advisor and they said they would remove the charges. After the fifth incorrect lead we called and they had accrued the charges for all the leads they had sent, plus a $70 late charge for not paying for them. They then offered to cut this in half and close the account... I obviously declined and said that I would not pay even half for invalid leads. They agreed and said they would close the account.

Then two months later I received a letter from CMI (their collection agency) that said I owed $165.01 now. They did not remove the charges but instead sent the balance to collections. After calling in, the customer service supervisor "JD **" agreed that they had dropped the ball but said that there was now nothing they could do. He recommended that I pay them and then set up an account with Home Advisor again and they would issue me a credit towards any future leads... RIDICULOUS. I received a lot of leads but complained quite often to them about the number of leads that I received that were not even resulting in a returned phone call. Then there were leads that were people that were just curious about what something would cost, but had no intention of pursuing a project. I myself still to date sometimes fall into a Home Advisor trap looking for pricing on materials, and suddenly I have contractors calling me to install windows when all I was looking for was a price for a window to install as a contractor. As a result 4 contractors would have to pay for Service Magic's services.

After many months of this I reviewed the pros and cons and looked at the projects that I did sign as apposed to the money I spent and decided that I was picking up more profitable from other sources and canceled Service Magic. Of course they apologize and sent me some free leads then more leads and kept billing my account until they Maxed out my credit card and went to my backup business card. I was forced to change my account and block them from billing on my business account. I received a new credit card and business card. After many heated conversations they went away.

As a contractor I wanted to expand my business by receiving more leads. That was not the case with using Home Advisor! They sent me leads that was sold to about 12 other contractors after promising only 2 other competitors. Most of the leads did not pick up their phones because of being aggravated of all the other calls. We spent well over $1,000.00 and we have not been refunded for any of their mistakes or lies. I give this advertisement company 600904792 thumbs down!

I submitted a review to Home Advisors and they did not post the review because it was a negative review. They stated that they did not post the review because I had not hired the company.

I signed up as a contractor with Home Advisor about a week ago and have received four leads since, only one of which being a successful lead. I felt like this was not going to be a good fit for our company and was not going to be profitable in the long run, so I kindly called to cancel our account and get refunded. They told me that they will not refund me the initial $89 quarterly charge for being on their online directory and having an account with them. Their only solution was that I can "turn off" my leads if I don't want to receive/pay for them anymore. I would prefer to be refunded my $89 and cut all ties with Home Advisor, but they don't want to cooperate with that request. I was specifically told when I signed up that we were not under contract, and I was definitely not told that the $89 was non-refundable. I also was not aware when I signed up that each of the leads would be sent to multiple companies, leaving us in a sales competition with one another. All of this hassle is not worth it for the minimal amount of real work we'll get from Home Advisor.

I have initiated contract for different projects at 5 different occasions. Either the contractors don't reply, or when they reply back and set up times, never show up, you just spend all day waiting. Instead of using commercial contractors, I thought giving business to local people, trying to make ends meet...I went through this site. One contractor for garden project brought most inexperienced people and a day worth of work ended up being 8 days of worthless job. For some jobs, the price is prorated. I paid, asked amount of money for 3500 sq feet lawn to be redone, basically re seeding the entire lawn, the guy came, cleaned only few patches, about 150 sq feet area, threw some seeds and that was it. I ended up re seeding them myself...so far only one contractor, to lay wooden floor did the best job efficiently, on time, never late. One contractor who did cement work, walked away with my extension cord, left cement remnants everywhere. Would I use them again? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

I joined about two months ago. After seeing that this was not for me I kindly called and requested to cancel. Instead of canceling they stopped the leads for a few days. I called several more times to cancel and left a message with the person assigned to me. Finally I got a live person and told them of my intention to cancel. This company will not let you cancel and continues to charge you for leads. I had to get a replacement credit card with a different number just to stop them from charging my card. I was told I owe for leads that were given to me after my request to stop. Stay away. This company is a fraud.

I was surprised to see a notice that a collection agency is coming after me for $100.99 from Home Advisor, Inc. We were going to work with them in starting a cleaning business and it NEVER got off the ground so within 4 days, not 3, we called to cancel our agreement and get a refund of our $80.99 fee. I also contacted American Express to notify them that we decided NOT to open the business. So it was not made clear to me that this is non-refundable. That is a scam and a rip off. IN this day and age, $80 can feed your family or put gas in your car.

Out of 25 leads they charged me for - one actually turned into work, the rest were shoppers or other companies called them back first. Yes when they send a lead, they send it to multiple companies. One particular lead was a complete botch - the customer had never heard of Home Advisor. Told me he didn't even own a computer, I spent much time on the phone with Home Advisor and they refused to refund me the money for the bogus lead. I believe that any type of advertising like this is flawed in its basic construction.

Imagine if 20 years ago, the phone company came to us and said that they would charge us a fee and they were going to help customers turn the pages in their yellow page book and help them find our ad. Would you have signed up? I wouldn't. The internet is here and we all have access to it. WHY are we paying a third party to insert themselves in the middle of our business model so that they can advertise for us. We all have complete access to advertise ourselves on the internet. Here's a funny side - as I'm typing this the auto correct keeps letting me know that it doesn't recognize the word advisor. Well I don't recognize them as a legitimate business. My advice - STAY AWAY.
