I signed on to this operation, being told that I would be paying for LEADS that would put me in contact with customers. I was not told these same LEADS would be offered to others, nor was I told I would enter into a competition. I'm now up to 14 LEADS, with only being able to do one of them. The only reason I was able to do one of them, is because it was an accessory (the minor low paying job). That same accessory was originally sent to me at about 5 times its original cost. I had it adjusted, but found out that almost half of the LEADS are way above what I was told, and are for some reason always coming in above the price on the list.

For instance, to mount a TV on the wall, is supposed to be around $16.00. I've had them go up more than four times that amount. And when cancelling, they won't issue a refund, but offered more LEADS. And we agreed to only four, but now I have a balance they won't remove. If they would have cancelled when I asked them, I would not have this balance. I have the balance because they could not issue a refund and ask me to take four more leads. But that turned into me still owing them more money. I could go on, but this is the worse and most corrupt operation I've ever had to deal with. Their system is designed not in your favor.

I'm a contractor for 30 past years in good standing. I requested an annual membership for $288.00 with no leads. They defied my request, enrolled me in quarterly billing with leads. I immediately discovered this suspending my Visa card and leads via website on a Saturday. They sent me 5 leads anyway totaling $479.00 after this. Convenient Nobody's working there on weekends. So on Monday I attempted to resolve this clear mistake on their part. They promised to deal with it immediately. They apologized however I was sent AN ADDITIONAL 3 LEADS FOR $289.00 on top of the others. To date they have promised to refund me, but haven't. And today I called and they now CONVENIENTLY CLAIM TO HAVE NONE OF THE AGREEMENTS ON FILE AND WILL BE KEEPING MY INITIAL PAYMENT. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PONZI scheme. They are nothing more than common thieves.

HomeAdvisor wants to keep these bad and unreliable contractors for their business. In order to do that, the HomeAdvisor cheat the consumers by: 1) Removing all the negative rating/comments from these bad contractors, so that these bad contractors are still showing as 5 stars. I was not aware of this trick until I found my comments were removed recently. That bad contractor I hired still had 5 star with a statement of "100% of reviewers recommend this pro". 2) HomeAdvisor doesn't do background checks, but they still declare that these contractors passed the security check. Therefore, people put their trust in HomeAdvisor, yet they hire unreliable contractors.

Via HomeAdvisor, I hired this 5 star company in March, but lost a huge amount of money. This bad company is not registered anywhere, either state or county and has no credit, and no bank account at all. Of course, no tax was paid. I believe that HomeAdvisor should be responsible for my losses. The HomeAdvisor also allows this contractor to advertise his business by using my name, location and pictures taken in my home alone with the fake statements. In other words, they use my information to cheat other people. That damaged my reputation and privacy.

I signed on with HomeAdvisor and was completely mislead. I should have read the entire fine print but even so, they should inform you of all the important terms. When you question any charges, they do tell you the terms and at that point, it is too late. This morning I received a lead, called immediately and was told they do not want the estimate. This was a $81.00 charge to me. I called HomeAdvisor and they told me they do not credit back if the customer changes their mind. It was literally within a couple of hours this all happened. It was a scam! Do not use this company. I am saving you from what I went through.

I was completely mislead by the sales person who signed me up. I was specifically told that I would not be charged for leads unless I pursued them. All of a sudden I keep getting all of these text messages and phone calls. All leads were not even close to something I would do so I did not act on them. Next thing I know I have hundreds of dollars worth of charges. When I spoke with customer service I find out that I could be charged up to $800 a month!!! I was mislead in so many ways during that sales call, which conveniently they don't record that part of the conversation. A complete FRAUD - I am writing this so that hopefully others don't make the same mistake I did. I am out a lot of money for nothing.

This company is all about making money and is not for the consumer. After being bugged 3 times a week from them and told them to put me on their do not call list many times, they finally caught me at a weak point by offering me $100 worth of leads and telling me how they do this stringent background check and only the best of the best is accepted by Home Advisor... Ok so with AAAAA rating on Angie's List (I was told that's why they wanted me) they do my background check and call me and inform me I passed with flying colors, so they sign me up and collect an $85 fee to get the ball rolling. The next day I get a lead. I call the woman and she tells me my company already spoke to her and she told us she was not going to hire us because she felt uncomfortable.

At that point I told him I was confused because I never spoke to her before. She said Long Island Powerwash was there this morning and I told her she must be confused because there's only 1 Long Island Powerwash and I was not there so I told her I will call her back in a few moments. I hung up the phone and went on Home Advisor and to my surprise there was a company calling themselves Long Island Powerwash but the difference was there was space between power and wash so this guy goes under Long Island Power Wash. At this point I call consumer affairs in Nassau and Suffolk county to see if he is licensed and insured and was told there is only 1 company that goes under that name that is insured and holds a license that that was MY COMPANY!

At that point I call Home Advisor and inform them of this problem. I was told they will look into it and call me right back. Of course NO CALL so the next day I call and get the run around and again they tell me in a few minutes I will get a call back, AGAIN NO CALL. So the next day I call again and demand they take care of this issue because after all they do this stringent background check and how can this company be on there with no license or most importantly NO INSURANCE. They tell me they will call me back and I told them I will not accept this and demand to speak to a manager. So after waiting 10 minutes on hold a manager gets on the phone and informs me that yes this company is part of Home Advisor but there should be no problem because there is a space between power and wash with the other company.

At that point I ask is he kidding me and what about the fact this company holds no license or insurance and why did they not see this when they did their background check. At that point he tells me he only needs a license if it is offered by the State of New York. At that point I tell him it does not work that way. You need a county license 1 for Suffolk and 1 for Nassau and he holds neither. He tells me sorry that's all he needs is a State license. If one is offered and it is not... At that point I lose it and demand they take me off their website and I wanted my $85 dollars back. He tells me that they will take me off but it's been 3 days since I signed up and I already received leads and my grace period is over.

I was stunned and hung up and called the woman I spoke to 2 days before to explain what was going on. So she agreed to let me come and give her an estimate. So later that day I go there and give her the estimate and show her what this company is all about and show her my AAAA rating on Angie's List and she hires me on the spot. She told me there was no way she would hire that company and she felt uncomfortable and felt the company was sketchy. I have called Consumer Affairs and informed them of this company and was told they would look into it. It has been a month since I called Consumer Affairs and they did nothing and this company is still part of Home Advisor..... This company is flat out liars and is not for the consumer. Consumers should stick to Angie's List and pay the $10 a year to join and they would know what kind of company they are hiring!

My brother is a contractor. He received a call from a sales rep who told him that he will send him leads and if the lead turned into a job, Homeadvisor will charge him for it. He paid $80 for a signup fee and started getting emails with leads. Within two weeks, he realized that they are charging his account over $300 for the leads which by the way had nonworking numbers or people didn't answer or didn't want any job done... We called them, cancelled our account and asked for a refund on the leads. The lady on the phone absolutely refused to help out saying that these are their services, their business model and they will only refund money if the phone number doesn't work. The refunded money will go into the Homeadvisor account and NOT to the customer's credit card account.

I asked if there is a supervisor I could talk to and she would only give me his email. Tried calling the salesperson who sold me this scam and he hung up on me immediately and would not pick up again. Seriously what a scam this is. I can't believe the law of our land lets such ** do this BS to honest hardworking people. Luckily, we called our credit card company and they accepted to refund me the $300 but not the $80 signup fee which is understandable. Bottom line is this company is a FRAUD! At first I was very happy with Home Advisor. About 50% of the leads I got were actual people that would responded to calls, were looking for quality as opposed to the cheapest possible price, and paid their bills. After that, whether or not you convert the leads into clients is entirely dependent on you and not HomeAdvisor.

In my second half of my first year with Home Advisor they changed their settings - now, instead of me being able to set my own lead coverage areas, they had to that for me. It was a bit of a hassle as I constantly like to tinker around with my settings but in general, it worked out. After that, things went downhill. I live about 8 miles away from a large city. When I originally was able to set my lead coverage I had initially included that city; however, I quickly realized how stupid that was. After that I only had 5 zip code areas for 4 small towns/cities.

At the beginning of my second year I started transitioning out of a full time manager role. I was planning on selling the business in about 8 months and transitioning into a different career. I called HomeAdvisor once again to adjust my lead coverage area as I wouldn't be checking in too often so I wanted to make everything as simple as possible for my workers - making sure that the large city was not in my coverage. A few weeks later, I noticed I had gotten several leads from the large city so I again called to ask them to adjust. Same story - this time I paused my leads and HomeAdvisor called asking what they could do to help - I told them again that I wanted the large city removed from my coverage area - they again told me it was taken care. There were at least 6 or 7 calls of this nature in about a month.

After this, I got married and was out of the country on my honeymoon and then out of state for an extended period of time - when I got back in state, I didn't check my account for a few weeks. I came back on this morning and to my shock, there were tons of leads from (you guessed it) the large city. I checked my lead coverage formerly, they had only made the mistake of including a few zip codes from the city but, oh no not this time. There were close to twenty zip codes from the greater metro area of the city. I immediately called to discuss they refunded my credit card $33 and then offered $150 in free leads - I said no way. I haven't added up everything nor do I care to, but from a ballpark estimate the total damages (just of the large city leads, not including the good leads) were close to $1,000.

HomeAdvisor is a decent company selling a decent product. However, if you in any way want to adjust your account semi-regularly, do not go with this company. The reps lowest on the ladder are the ones who do the adjusting, so it will most likely take multiple calls for them to even get one change right - now Imagine wanting to change and tinker with your leads once a month or even once a week - an absolute nightmare. On top of that, you will have to call every time you need a refund because they botched your coverage area. If HomeAdvisor went back to the old way where you could adjust everything and if you needed help, they'd do it for you, then they might convince me to come back (if I was planning on staying in the business - oh, and if they wrote me a check for $1,000).

Unfortunately, nearly every lead generated was fruitless. Wrong numbers, customers with no knowledge of HomeAdvisor and hangups. They sold us by saying these customers are ready to do business.....not! It's very difficult to challenge a lead charge. Their ads are very slick but don't be fooled it's a waste of money.

We purchased 36 different leads from Home Advisor before we caught on to the scam they were pulling on the local contractors. We did land 3 of the jobs we called on from them which was a good thing. Back to the scam we receive many leads that we accept and pay $92.00 apiece for their "market match" leads and $112.00 for their "exact match" which you are forced to pay for no matter what. When you call for a refund on leads that don't EVER answer, they tell you that it's not their problem and no refund. Meanwhile the "exact match" leads are suppose to be exactly that but we have called many leads and have the so-called customer say they have too many people coming to look at it and hang up if they answer at all which is more often than not. Why would a REAL consumer fill out a specific questionnaire and then not answer the phone or emails or messages?

When we asked the Home Advisor "MANAGER" on duty what we are suppose to do he told us to pretty much harass the customer going to their private property and pushing them into talking to us. I am sure this is not what the consumer wants to hear how their personal information is being thrown out to a lot of different contractors. I did contact the news telling them about the experience and feel they should be investigated for fraud! Please leave feedback for us to read so we can figure out how to keep these people from scamming NEW contractors and SMALL businesses.

During the course of our phone call, I inquired whether they represented other contractors for a specific project I needed done. When she said yes, she stated she would forward a list of local contractors to me, from whom I could choose. She took my e-mail address, but I never received any list. What I did receive over the next few days were phone calls to my personal cell phone from contractors saying that I had inquired about a project. Problem is, I never gave HomeAdvisor permission to give out my phone number to ANYONE except the one contractor I originally thought I was calling. Not only that, one of the contractors informed me that HomeAdvisor had charged him $40 for my phone number! Poor guy had to pay for their fraud. I would advise contractors NOT to use this company. So about a month ago I was told about this company, we have been in business for over 10 yrs but because we moved to a different state it was like starting all over again. I landed with Amber as the sales person and she gave me a $100 credit towards leads for being referred. When she explained how the company worked I decided I didn't want to do it because I would pay for all leads I received including the ones that I didn't get the job. Then her way of convincing me to do it was she would personally monitor my credit. Once I was getting close to my $100 she would contact me and ask me if I wanted to continue with them. If I said it wasn't working I would keep my profile up on their website for the 3 months I paid for and not receive any more leads. I said ok!

Then as we were setting up my account they had problems doing my background check - took them 2 weeks. As a result Amber said she would give me an extra $100 credit because of the inconvenience. That sounds great right? Well not really... I started getting hammered with leads that I would call and no one would answer. At this point I wasn't too concerned because I was told I would get a call as my $200 credit was close to being over - 2 weeks later and I never heard from Amber so I decided to call and guess what? All I would get was her voicemail. After numerous calls I got a hold of her "manager" who told me that she no longer worked there and not only she didn't give me the extra $100 credit but she also has no power or way of keeping track of my leads so that call I was waiting for was never going to happen.

By this time I was already with more than $400 worth of leads charged on my credit cards that is an estimate of 30-40 leads, in which I only got a response of 5 leads and only 1 I actually got the job. Honestly sounds to me like this website is a total scam and I just wish I had read all of this reviews before agreeing with them, and giving them my credit card information, social security number and all the other info I gave them.

I was not told there would be a reoccurring quarterly fee; in fact, I was told it was a one time startup fee, which was an outright lie. What they really did was waived the startup fee and charged me a reduced quarterly fee. I was told leads would cost me between $14-$25, when in fact leads cost me $20-$30. That may sound like a small difference, but it does add up and makes a big difference to our small family owned business.

The salesman never told me how to monitor or control my leads, which lead to more leads the first 2 weeks than we could handle. It was not until I called support that I was instructed how to manage lead control. Then there are the dead leads from people just out playing on the web! This was the last straw for us. Now when I call back, this guy do not work there anymore, but a guy name Rene ** still work there. It looks like they are the same person. Anyway I agreed to pay ten dollars and do not remember how many cents per lead, now they are charging me 21 dollars. That is a one hundred percent increase, and is not fair. I ask the person to play back the recording to me, and they said that is not possible. So they are doing this to get people to sign in to an agreement that they will not honor.

Home Advisor has a call center that preys on new service start-up companies. These are usually the guys that think just because they're working, they're making money. You will find the cheapest contractors on there, also the type of contractors that might not call you back or even been in business 6 months down the line. Home Advisor is affiliated with Homewyse, a website that provides misleadingly low pricing information on services they are targeting. By providing such pricing guidelines, they encourage the user to keep searching which usually leads them to the Home Advisor website. The only way to stop this company is for good contractors to refuse to give them any money. We need to do everything possible to stop other contractors from feeding this evil telemarketing beast.

I was with ServiceMagic for years and only got week a couple times and it became a waste of money. I have been a flooring contractor for 20 years and not one complaint and say they do background checks on their contractors. So they called me and told me that they found a felony that I got 30 years ago. Well they should have done their homework and see that it was for possession of a prescription medication without a prescription that a friend gave me at the time for pain for I was hurt on the job.

They should not have the right to do that and they should have checked my record as a contractor. Not one complaint and about my company and not check me for something 30 years ago; give me a break. And after reading these complaints, I am glad they did stop giving me leads but this isn't right for I made a mistake, which I don't really think I would call it a mistake for a friend helped me out. And I never hurt anyone or stolen in my life. So keep away from them and online used to be good when it started, but now that people like HomeAdvisor got hold of it, they rip you off and they should be the ones charged with felony counts. Thanks for listening people and good luck.

I'm General Contractor for the company BOA Heavy Construction Corp. I advised not dealing with the HomeAdvisor website. They are very unseen hustling into your bank account. Since HomeAdvisor agents promoted us to pay per lead plus monthly fees $125. Most leads that I received which costs roughly $40 to $130 dollars per lead. Most homeowners didn't answer the phone, and I still have to pay a lead $110, and some homeowners just wanted to know about my price to do nothing and I lost that costly Lead $90.00.

Online service is no good to run your company because all the website-based homeowners are not too serious to hire you and you will have to pay per lead. Most homeowners are more interested to hire you is the "best way" in your local county newspaper ad or Google's Pay-Per-Click. I put to stop HomeAdvisor to run my account, they sent me a letter demanding $1,100, since I only got two leads which those homeowners who bought cheap in favor of higher quality or better stuff with lowest as possible on labor cost.

HomeAdvisor sent 10 least contractors to visit to a same homeowner. That owner is seeking the lowest cost bidding system. Undocumented workers asked for $300 dollars bidding compare $3,000 for a Pro. Website-Based HomeAdvisor will get you 2 out of 10 leads instead newspaper ad gets you 18 out of 20 calls. Don't waste of your time with HomeAdvisor or any of Website-Based Hustlers whom they seek your credit cards only.

Another national company working the numbers. Never again. National companies, especially internet ones, make their money on the odds that by being nationwide if they can make a few bucks, or a few hundred, from a million people, they will get rich. The sales rep never told me that my card would be charged every month without my authorization. I was told I could call each month and put money into my account, as much as I wanted, to get more leads.

Then, after the first month, I was leaving the country and had just submitted some bids so asked to put my leads on hold "for the maximum amount of time." I was told that 30 days was the max. After 30 days, I was notified that my leads would resume. Fine... I still had some of my initial $200 in my account. Then when it ran out, I received an email stating that they had a "potential lead" but I did not have enough money in my account to cover it. I didn't care because the truth is that even though the sales rep Peter ** told me it takes customers a good half hour to fill out their online service request... which meant they were serious... it takes more like 30 seconds, free of course, and 99% of the leads were what you'd expect on the internet... people fishing for prices. I put a lot of time into my bids and did not get a single job. I replied to the customers immediately too. So I decided not to put any more money into my account.

Then I received another lead. I thought hmm... well maybe there wasn't enough to cover that other one but this one is smaller and I must have had some money left. But then I received another so I called them. You guessed it... They had been charging my card all along. So I asked for a refund since I was never told that would happen. They even admitted it was not on paper but that "you were informed verbally" - I was NOT! Their reply... "Under no circumstances do we issue refunds." Even when they are wrong! They offered me "a few free leads" which I turned down.

To top it off, in the course of the conversation, the person who said nobody had more authority than him when I asked to speak to his superior said... "You should have put your leads on hold for 90 days if you were busy." 90 days??? I was told 30 was the max. So... In other words if I would have been told that at the time I put them on hold the couple months worth of charges would never have been made and we wouldn't even have had that conversation!

So he goes on and on... "Well, Mr. **, you got an email stating that your leads would resume therefore you could have called and put them on hold again so it's your fault." Well, Mr. Supervisor, I figured I had money left so I'd let it run out. Then the email that said I didn't have enough to cover a current lead told me that I had in fact drained my account. "Well then Mr. **, why didn't you call when you got a lead after that?" I told you 3 times Einstein because I thought the next lead was cheaper and was covered by some small amount that I must have still had in the account. But then I got another. "Well, Mr. **, why didn't you call when that one came in?" I did! Right NOW!

"Sorry... no refunds under any circumstances, Mr. **." Is that a recording or what??? So let me get this straight... Even if it is your fault and by misinforming me twice you were able to sneak several hundred dollars from my account, you cannot and will not issue a refund? "No sir, can I offer you a few free leads to stay with us... I want to work with you." Ok, Mr. Supervisor, how about this then.... Let's each bear 50% of the responsibility here. Give half of my money back in leads instead of just a few. They cost you nothing anyway. "I'm sorry, Mr. **, I am not able to do that." What! I thought you wanted to work with me.

So that's how Home Advisor Pro makes their money. By getting contractors all over the country to sign on the line and even if they do cancel their membership, by then they have made hundreds of dollars. Imagine if you or me made hundreds from half the contractors in this country. Easy money and lots of it. For nothing.

One more thing: They tell customers that they make sure all of the contractors are quality ones. I needed a concrete job done at my own home so I filled out their form. That's how I know how quick and easy it is. One contractor called. We talked for awhile and he never called back. When I mentioned that to the sales rep... the one who told me they have a reputation for having great contractors... his reply was, "We have some good contractors and some bad ones. Sorry about that."

If you are a contractor, find your business somewhere else. If you are a customer, don't waste your time. They will send any contractor who is willing to let them take his money.

This company is all about lies. I signed up on August 7, 2014 and specifically asked the lady on the phone "So if I don't get the job I don't pay for the lead?" She said "no, you don't." I asked "how do you track that I am reporting correctly if I land the job or not?" She said "all calls are monitored and routed through our company with extension assigned to each contact." Not that I would do that because I am probably one of the most honest people you will ever meet. I was just curious as how they would monitor what jobs I landed if I didn't pay for what I was not awarded. Sounded too good to be true. I agreed "sure sign me up."

She had me listen to a recording that I had to push 1 to approve or 2 to decline. Well the whole time that I was supposed to be listening and pushing buttons she was telling me how long winded the recording was and if I could not push the button and listen at the same time she would push them for me from her end. I have no idea what she agreed to for me because my buttons did not work and she was longer winded than the recording.

I had lasik surgery the very next day and was advised not to strain my eyes, no computers, and dark glasses for 48 hours. Immediately back to work after that, not really concerned about homeadvisor at the time because I had not even call about a job much less been awarded one, so I was sure I had nothing to worry about. My ac went out and I was talking about this great company with the owner of the heating and air company. He stated to me "Oh no Miss. _____, you better check on that because I signed up with them and they charged me for every number and even numbers. I immediately went online and lo and behold, I am down almost $ 2,000.00 in less than a week.

I have not landed 1 job and have paid out that much money. I was told they would credit my account for leads that was a long distance but as I just checked, they are refusing to credit due to my sign up area. I had told the lady no more than 15 mile radius and I am in Canton and she has majority of the leads coming from Austell, Powder Springs, Atlanta, Kennesaw. Each lead ranges from $15.00 - $78.00. I will be filing a lawsuit.

So I went online as a customer to see how it works. I was just looking for contractors in my area. Not trying to set up anything for anyone to call me. As a roofing contractor myself, I made the mistake of using SM, and nearly every one of the horror stories you read has happened to me. Everything from fake numbers and emails, to old leads, to leads of work that is not in my profession, and never, never expect a refund.

As far as being a screened contractor.....give them your cc account # and you are now a screened contractor. I had to fight for months to get rid of them, cancelling credit cards, changing bank numbers, even after my "contract time" was past. Turning off your leads every weekend, just meant you will get charged for leads on the weekend. Stay away from this company. Even now Home Advisor is pestering me, now I will call them out that I know they are actually SM in disguise. And one more thing, block their number and they will still call by re routing their number thru a local number making you think it's a customer calling.....by the way Angie's list does that same thing along with the high pressure sales calls.

Later on, we had some trouble with the work (about two and a half years on a ten-year warranties job) and tried to get advice from HomeAdvisor. The contractor apparently had changed the business name, so the HomeAdvisor staff claimed that they were never affiliated. Finally, the third or fourth person contacted at HA confirmed that the contractor's address had, at least in the past, been registered using the site to draw business although under a different name. Finally, he also pointed me at legal sites to get ideas on how to proceed. Uninformed consumers are just let loose to go fishing at your expense. After an 1 1/2 hours of checking outlets, they still couldn't get the two outlets fixed. My main complaints are this: After 1 1/2 hours, "W" says he could go back to the office and make or get a meter that would help him solve the problem. Why didn't he bring it in the first place? Then, he charged me twice the hourly rate since there were two of them, but didn't tell me that upfront. He also pointed out that I needed some wires behind the dishwasher enclosed in an electrical box, but he didn't have one on his truck...which I thought odd since it is such a simple part of an electrician's repair materials. He left for Home Depot to get one & was gone approx. 45 mins. while his helper waited for him. In the past, I have traveled to Home Depot to purchase an item and taken half the time to return home. I felt lied to but let it go. 3 months later the leads beep in on my phone early on a Sunday morning. I tried to call them once again to resolve the issue.

They are closed on the weekends and offer no help in dealing with problems. More unwanted leads come in. I call their customer service department during the week and explain the situation to no less than 4 "customer" service reps. They tell me that they will not remove the charges from my bill and that they will send it to a collection agency if I don't pay. Keep in mind I never called any of these "leads". Apparently, the 3 leads I received amounted to a bill of $248! They run an illegitimate and deceitful practice of charging people. In fact, with an attitude, the lady tells me I could have called in myself or checked to see if leads were off. Lady - I was so sick, under dr care, unable to move well at all, and just had surgery. She didn't care. Now I'm going to collections soon and a third attempt to credit these leads. Let's see what happens.

There you have it folks, a fortune 500 company with 98.000 contractors paying $15-75 per lead. A sick man who is losing his company almost because of it. With doctor's notes, reports, X-rays, surgery, and so on, they still won't let it go. Well this may be it folks, if they don't credit, I will quit and turn my efforts into blogging against this careless giant.

I was paid up for the month when I closed my account, and thought I would get that money back for closing it since I just paid them. But instead, I received a collection notice in the mail, saying I owed them $65.00. Never received anything before this letter or a phone call. I have emailed their customer support many times and have yet to hear from them. To me being a small business owner, this does not sit well with me.

The second lead was a recording filled with obscene language. No way was this lead screened. This company is a scam. If I could have actually gotten real leads from them it would have been a usable service. I never received any actual leads from them and they are trying to get money from me for nothing.

I too had some leads that were mistakes but I did receive credits. Start slow and learn how to use the system. You should respond right away, get your estimate and turn your bids in quickly as that is what is expected in today's market demands. If a mean person when you call Home Advisor, hang up and try again. It may not be for everyone but I have had success.

Once we found out about it, and they charge to our credit card account, we contacted them and cancelled (or so we thought) the account. We then contacted our credit card company and disputed the charge. After the credit card company validated the dispute and cancelled payment, HomeAdvisor then reopened the account without notifying us, and now 6 weeks later is sending us to collections if we don't pay the initial fee. We have already disputed the second fee and got that released, but according to them they cannot delete the $80.99 that was used to start the account, nor can it be cancelled without payment. Do not ever have anything to do with them.

I just opened the account about a week ago. I closed it three days later because what they sold me kept changing. I talked to the live chat and five other people including management and sales people but I was being told that I could choose how many leads I would get and have total control over it, but that kept changing. I was told I would have to pay per lead. I only wanted to get 3-5 leads because I'm a brand new company and can't afford a large bill right now but some work would be good. I spoke to the salesman and he just got rude when I told him I wanted out because your company keeps changing its terms, I made verbal agreements that I never got copies of and I gave you personal information, the coverage area on my account does not match up to the screen versus what you told me it would but he says, "It's ok. It is correct," regardless of what it said.

When I made the verbal agreements, there were also things that he said don't worry about. I just checked my business name with HomeAdvisor as a search and I found my business name and home address PLASTERED all over the internet. But, with someone else's phone number leading me back to their site. I had to close my account twice because after opening it, they opened it again SO THAT THEY COULD TALK TO ME... I have been on the phone with these people trying to get them to take me off altogether. I told them they were scaring the HELL out of me. I think we should look into a class action suit.

I am a general contractor with 28 years in business and I do mostly renovations/restorations. I was approached numerous times by Nick from Home Advisor regarding the services of this company. After many conversations of which I asked specifically how I would be charged for the service. His response was pay your 3 month application (my choice) and you would be billed for the leads that you make contact with once you met with the customer and landed the work. The company sent me leads nonstop via text and e-mail. I called the company # entered the 4 digit contact # and then nothing but blank air time. This went on for about 2 days, maybe 5 calls. Then I went online and review the customer’s bio and tried sending e-mails to the leads, not one response.

I went back to calling the company # and entering the 4 digit lead #. This time I was given the option of connecting with the customer, and I did so. The first 3 said they had already hired a contractor, one of which said the contractor was on the job then. One lead was polite and said she had already received 2 quotes and decide on one of the contractors. We all know this process takes some time from contact to estimate to hire, so why was Home Advisor still sending leads that were sealed and delivered? One lead hung up on me and another lead said, "Yeah call me back later, pal". When I confronted the company representatives all I got was that I knew how it works and they did nothing wrong. I was charged $633.00 for calling 10 leads which only 5 I made contact with, and still not one job from any of this all within the span of 8 days.

I went to the company chat line and had a conversation with Bianca (guessing not her real name) who stated customers post on their site even to request another contractor to quote on a completed job or to see if a contractor thinks another did a good job (WTH). This company will prey on whoever they can to make a buck dishonestly, while claiming they have no control on what the potential customer will do. As a contractor I was hoping this company could be a way to reach more customers and allow me to continue working in the profession I enjoy. Turns out all I got was a lesson on how people will screw you over for a few dollars. Please pass the word if you get contacted by this company tell them to start paying you to advertise for them, give them no guarantee and you will send them leads that will go nowhere and by the way it will cost you no matter what.

I received a call today from a HomeAdvisor Rep trying to get me to sign up with them for my business except there's this one tiny problem. I'm HomeAdvisor's competitor and not sure if they were trying to get rid of the competition or what their plan was exactly. When they told me what they do. It raised a lot of questions that I had to ask them about the service they provide. What they told me is completely different from what I read here. I asked HomeAdvisor Rep what they charged for their service. They told me $81 quarterly for membership and $12 to $16 per lead. So I asked them are the leads exclusive and the answer was no. So I asked them, "Am I charged for the lead if they don't buy my service", which of course the answer is yes. So I get charged quarterly for membership and the leads sent to me with the risk of no work? Sounds like a good deal right? Not really.

I'm a small company trying to prove my worth to my customers. My company sends leads to businesses similar to HomeAdvisor except there is one huge difference in my payment structure than theirs. My customers only pay for leads based on results. The lead I send calls you, not you calling them so you know it's fresh and hot leads. They charge $12 to $16 for shared leads. I set up a round robin with 3 to 5 companies that the lead is sent to call automatically and it calls each company in order until the call is answered and I only charge $10 per lead on that system. Exclusive leads are only $25 per lead meaning you're the only company who gets those leads. There are no monthly membership fees.

Anyway to make the long story shorter when I told the HomeAdvisor rep this, they proceeded to be forceful in trying to get me to sign up with them. What company does business like this? My experience with them is they use strong arm tactics to get customers and it could extend to the lead generation side as well. They're going to call me back on Mon. or Tues. of next week and thanks to these other reviews here, I have my answer for them.

At least that is what the agent told me and that leads would be $7 to $15. Very seldom do she ever see them at $15. I paid the down payment. HomeAdvisor sent me a total of 6 leads, bogus leads. No contact from the clients that they sent after calling them for 3 days. I immediately cancelled their services; recently I got a letter from the collection agency that they use, saying I have to pay for the leads they sent. Charging me well over $15 per lead.

He didn't seem to be interested in addressing the fact that the paint on the ceiling is now peeling off. I had to withdraw the review or risk a lawsuit. HA DENIED EVER GIVING OUT IDENTIFYING INFORMATION TO VENDORS.

Then HA went so far as to tell me that the ONLY WAY THE VENDOR WOULD'VE KNOWN IT WAS ME IS IF HE KNEW ABOUT THE THEFT! It didn't take much research to find out that this is the way they do it... They play consumer against vendor and then plead innocence on all sides. The end game is that I have no recourse, and the vendor continues to appear to have high ratings because my review, along with who knows how many others, has been quashed. I called the first one on the list, set up an appointment for them to give me an estimate and waited. They said they would have an estimate ready in 24 hours. A week goes by and still no estimate. I called them to ask about the estimate and she said that her husband was still out in the field, but would call me back. She asked for my phone number and that was it. She didn't ask for my name, the house location or even the date that they originally came out, which at that point, I knew she wasn't going to call back.

So I went back to HomeAdvisor to leave a review. I gave them a score of 1 and basically reiterated what I said in the first paragraph. A couple of days later, I receive a call from HomeAdvisor to verify my review. After that call, nothing. That call was over a month ago and they still haven't posted my review. I even emailed them to ask how long it took to place the review and I received no answer.

What I'm getting from HomeAdvisor and their "reviews" of companies is that they will only post the "positive" reviews and nothing more. In essence, you really don't know how good a company is that they are recommending, because you are not getting an accurate portrayal of the company that you may want to use. Here is the statistics: Out of the 81 leads I got through Home Advisor, only 6 people wanted to meet and discuss their project to receive an estimate; 13 had incorrect customer information and could not be reached, and the remainder could not be reached or indicated that they did not want to receive any calls because they did not want to have any renovations done. I have known about HOME ADVISOR when they were SERVICE Magic. I have used them to get work done on property I own in Brooklyn. That was a big stucco job and the company did a very good job. I was very satisfied. Even had him do more work for me. My second experience was not so good. The person I got through Home Advisor was sloppy and failed to finish the job. I was there late in the day and he said he would continue working until all the work was done. Looking at their progress and not wanting to make another trip back, I paid the balance on the job. When I came back a few days later, I found the job was not finished and paint splatters were on the cement patio and exterior walls. I also found they had left their broken step ladder in the basement in place of my step ladder, which was in new condition. I called the painter and he said that his vehicle broke down, the ladder was taken in error and would be returned and would be finished and everything cleaned up. He never came back!

In spite of that, I myself decided to give Home Advisor a try. One rotten apple does not make the entire basket unworthy. I myself have been a professional handyman for more than 20 years. So, I signed up on March 26 and got my first lead on the 27th. Washer repair. Lead cost $10.75. Repair turn out to be nothing more than a washer in the hose. The wife was also concerned that she thought the basket was too loose. I told her it was not, but I ran it through a cycle. All fine. Job charge $45.

Okay, a start, so to speak. Next call, not so good. Wanted an estimate based upon his description of what he thought was wrong with his drain. Did not follow up. Next call, the women did not speak English. Got credit for that. Next call, today 4/5. call number not in service. Next call same day, answer phone and so far no call back. One other call to days ago is still pending as I did see the client. He wants to wait until after the holidays (Easter/Passover) then he will call me.

So far I have paid $25 for leads and $80 for the service. I understand that it may take time, but it appears to be like these online dating sights, Clients ( the girls) do not have to pay anything to ask for the service but the service professional (the guys) have to pay if they want to contact the client. Something wrong with their business model. So far, I am still in the program, nine days now, but I don't think this is going to work out. I see that 84% of the service professional came in with a rating of ONE STAR (ANGRY) and just 3% are in the good to excellent 4 and 5 stars. This is not good.

I'm going to paste the chat that I had with Home Advisors customer service. You be the judge.

Leonardo: I'm really upset with your service. Most of the leads are only people asking questions and they are not ready to do anything. Not only that, when I see a good zip code I click on it and when I get the lead is another one completely different in the middle of nowhere! I have spent over 300 - for leads of people that they don't return phone calls and they don't know what they want or they simply were inquiring for budgeting. That is not what I'm paying for. I want credit on those payment that I have made for nothing

Wayne: Leonardo, you are a good contractor and we definitely appreciate your business. However, that is not something we credit for and I have no authority to assist you with this concern. I apologize for any inconvenience and would love to assist you with something else.

Leonardo: This is a rip off; your service is worthless... a bunch of numbers with nothing in them.

From the beginning, my experience within the first few days was troubling. I feel as if I've been misled and lied to. What I should've done is find one real person to ask and get a good review about HomeAdvisor. I can't even find a "realistic" virtual review that isn't vague. As a contractor, potential leads provided to me can prove valuable and profitable. When leads are dead, why would anyone want to pay? A 3 month subscription will cost a contractor over $80 and each Air conditioner installation lead will cost over $70. The kicker is that no one will answer when you try to contact the lead. It gets worse: you can request to pick and choose leads that may still go nowhere. That service will be an additional $80 at least.

As a small contractor, does it make sense to give a FREE estimate when you can end up wasting your time and money on transportation and other associated expenses for a big MAYBE?! This service will provide you with "less than MAYBEs" that don't answer the phone. Then they will charge a service fee for that dead lead. You can dispute it but then you'll notice that the service cancellation you requested was not heard. With complete clarity and repetition I asked for a dead halt of these leads. An e-mail was sent to me notifying me that my account will automatically renew in approximately 90 days. I can tell that the people at the top of this company have a model that works. They find tenacious and talented salespeople. After that, they don't need to listen to you. They have a credit card number. That's what they need.

They may get you for a week's worth of dead leads by the time you realize their bogus game. If you forget to remind them again and again, even though you've done so repeatedly the CC charges will happen again in 90 days. Even if they don't get you on one lead, you lost your money on the subscription. Had I used my gut in time, I would've checked for reviews online beforehand. I could have spent that money on local advertising. To: Mrs. Manager Debbie **, do you feel that your superiors really listen to complaints from customers or even you? Or do they train everyone to use empathy as a tool to sucker people in a little bit longer just because they haven't lost enough?

I do receive my fair share of bogus leads but from the leads that I do get I land 85 percent of them. You need to be persistent and follow up. The only way your company will do well with home advisor is to be a good company. Contractors have gotten bad names because most contractors are frivolous fake companies. If you cannot take care of the homeowner find another line of business.

I called them and expressed my opinion and was told that to hang in there. Well we are now in week 4 and this is obvious a scam. I advise people stay clear of Home Advisor.

This company "steals" leads by acquiring any version web addresses of a company name that a small business may naively overlook purchasing. I can only assume the amount of business that my company has lost by this slimy practice has been massive. This practice was brought to my attention by a customer who had searched for my company and clicked on the first link he saw.

To his surprise, he was contacted by half a dozen companies other than my own. Which is also interesting since they claim to only give the lead to a handful of contractors. I have since tested his experience by posting interest in a contracting project and the phone calls from contractors hasn't stopped since. (To the other contractors; sorry about that. Hopefully you'll catch on to what they are doing quickly.) Personally, I think we should collectively look into a class action lawsuit if possible.

I received 7 leads from them this time. Out of the 7, 4 were junk and had bad contact info. Out of the remaining 3, two were tire kickers and were thinking about possibly doing a remodel project sometime and were looking for free info. The remaining single lead that actually turned into an appointment had no idea of the true cost of a bath remodel. 7 leads, between $35 and $55 each = a costly reminder to me to never do business with these people again.

They told me that the $80 that I paid was not going to be reimbursed which I agreed to but that the 3 leads that I received were not going to be charged to my account. 4 days later I noticed a charge on my bank statement for 1 lead. I called them and asked them why was that charge on my debit card and they said that they have in their records that I called and canceled but they didn't record that I was not going to be charged for those 3 leads. So the supervisor got on the phone with me and said that I either paid half of the 3 leads (at least) or this bill was going to go to collections.

I should have know better! After a few weeks of having leads sent to us, I finally realized that all phone numbers that never had anyone answer and emails unreturned were probably developed through a boiler room operation. We do not do business that way. Initially we had been told we could cancel at anytime and paid the $80 fee with the understanding we would get a $400 lead credit. I figured that would give me time to see how they performed. See above. This morning I noticed they are charging me for the leads per my bank statement. A breach of our verbal agreement.

I've just returned from my bank where I canceled the account card they were using. I've had this problem once before and it's the only way to stop their accessing my account which, by reading the reviews I should have read before, they seem to do even when you wish to terminate their association with you. Now I will send them a email, no answer on the phones. To contractors, do not do business with them. To potential customers, seek local references from others in your area who have had similar work done or check for local advertising. This is the first time I've used a lead generator instead of relying on work of mouth or local advertising. Too bad they spoiled it for legit lead companies, if there are any. I won't do it again.

We've been signed up for two weeks. Half the leads won't call you back and the other's are just playing on the internet. They are happy to have you give estimates. Come to the house to do measurements and then tell you that they will pursue the job at another time, or they hired illegals to do the job, or they went to Lowe's to have them do it and what were those measurements again?

But of course, home advisor encourages this behavior from the general public, because they are making their money off of struggling contractors and small handyman businesses. Shame on them. This is a total waste of precious time and life force. The leads are really expensive too for these small jobs. They said they cost so little because they send them to multiple contractors for competition to get the customer base the best price possible. I decided to give it a try. To make a long story short having been with them since they were service magic they have multiple times gone back on their own guidelines of operation. They signed me up and said that they would credit any leads that had bad contact information or where the person requesting work was not the homeowner. I had several leads come through where the inquiry was for a real estate transaction and the person had no authority to accept the work and even later the real estate contract fell through so I requested credits and they denied them stating that they were going to own the home and one representative even lied to me and said the customer already closed escrow on the home, the fact remains that that particular customer was in a real estate transaction and potentially closing into to three weeks so he lied and said that customer had already closed escrow.

Mind you the lead came in on Saturday the 22nd and on Monday the 24th, according to home advisor they close escrow. I know that is not the fact as I contacted that lead to confirm they had still not owned the home at that point..... I spent over two hours trying to get $16 back, it is an utter waste of my time. They are not ethical and when my company grows large enough I will organize a class-action lawsuit in addition to putting my own "review" of their company on all of my mailers.... I am so outraged at their lack of ethical operations practices that I have inquired about utilizing TV investigators to expose their poor practices. They often send you leads first thing in the morning that came through the middle of the night when people are often lookee lue's or drunk making random clicks not realizing they're costing good honest contractors hundreds of dollars upon waking up. I was promised this time, (They still had my Name and info from Service Magic 2 years ago) that the new business "Home Advisor" was going to be good for everyone, I would only pay a nominal amount of $69.99 per month for all the service requests that came in instead of $22.00 each. That way if there were any old requests or people only getting estimates and not ready to have the work done it would be fair for my business. So I again signed up and they charged my credit card the $69.99 within about 15 minutes. (Then they told me that the first month is Non Refundable) So After 1 week and without any leads for work I called in and wanted to find out when I would get a service request. That's when they told me I was only signed up to be on their list. They would not be giving my name or number out to customers.

I told them I wanted a refund due to Fraud, they now are attempting to charge my Credit Card again & again. I am out $69.99, they will not answer my emails or my phone requests for a refund. This Business is a complete SCAM.

Let me tell you about my BAD, BAD Experience with HomeAdviors. At first I placed my business on their free directory. My phone number was replaced with their own phone number and of course clients reached answering machine or their Representative who will offer services from other companies NOT YOURS! Then I got a call from HomeAdvisor Representative who offered me a deal 49$ 99 cents one-time fee for membership and 9$-17$ per lead. I decided to give a try and get leads from Homeadvisor.com

The lies starts from their sales people... and ends with a customer support team. “There are 49$ one-time fee for the membership and a fee for each lead you get.” I asked Representative 2 times, “Is it only one time fee of 49$???” And ask her to confirm. Respond was “Yes only one time” (by the way they recorded the conversation....as well I did :):) Then oops... Surprise, you will find charges of 59$ every month... even not 49$ 99 cents. You call them and ask what is going on and ask them to listen to recorded conversations, conversations no longer available. Yes, you will start to receive leads. You respond to that leads in a seconds. You email them. You call them and YOU WILL NOT GET RESPOND FROM CLIENTS. Then you start wonder why it is happening? It should be a reason.

You can experiment and place an order /project for your type of business on same zip code where is your company is. What's happened next… you will get call from HOMEADVISOR REPRESENTATIVE who will offer you a help to match your project with a business. And what I got... the Rep contacted me over the phone with only one business!!!!

He didn’t give me a choice!!! I have talked to that company they asked me to sign with them to do my project. And when I asked the Rep to give me more choices of companies he said it is only one company available in my zip code. Sorry, what about my company??? Is my company a ghost??? (As they stated in our agreement, lead will be sent to at least 4 companies.) So from my understanding they have companies who are Priority for them. I discussed with that company to do my project. And 3 hours later, I got my project - came to me as a lead. It is mean HomeAdvisors send us leads which already USED.

NO WONDER. Why we didn't get any respond on those leads we got from HomeAdvisor because they already used. I felt like a homeless person who got a leftover food from the table. I called HomeAdvisor to Pro customer support service, waited on line about 40 minutes, didn't get connected. Then contacted Live support chat asked to cancel my account, they called me right away. I question them about this unfair practice and ooops, customer service REP find out why... because your leads are regular leads. You have to get executive leads which are double the price. OK I got that Executive leads and did experiment again. I placed an order for my project on a same zip code where is my business is and guess what's happened? The same I got a call and got connected to only one business... not mine of course :):) And I felt again as homeless person with leftover food.

I explain what the sales rep said and they said there has never been a promotion like that and it was nothing they could do. So I call my credit card company and they took the money back except for $20.00 because I understand that we were on the fourth month and I was responsible to pay for that month, but home advisor charge my credit card again therefore I had my credit company take it back and cancel my credit card. Now they are sending me emails saying they will send me to a collection agency for over $100.00.

Having signed up for the Home Advisor service as a contractor, they began sending me what were allegedly "leads." Lead after lead was nothing but a dead-end waste of time and money at a substantial sum of money for each contact. It was almost virtually universal that people with too much time on their hands would send an inquiry we received with either no intention of utilizing our service, or who had no financial means to pay for the work for which they were "inquiring." Often as not, when I returned the phone call, people hung up on me, didn't know what I was talking about or seemed to expect some mysterious bargain basement price for highly technical, labor intensive, specialized work. Despite number phone calls to Home Advisors, they simply turned a deaf ear to my complaints. STEER CLEAR OF THIS ORGANIZATION UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE MUCH MONEY.

I was misguided by a woman by the name of Shea. When Shea first called me, her demeanor was that of a representative for big company who wanted my service because there were several projects she was needing work for. She said she found me online and needed my help because she was "overloaded with phone calls from people who needed residential and office decorators" and that she found my work online and thought I would be "perfect for the job." Then, after sounding quite convincing and getting me all excited thinking I was about to tackle quite a few projects, that's when she started talking about payments. I was thinking it was skeptical because I will NOT pay ANYONE ANYTHING to get ME business. I know how to market.

She then explained to me that I would NOT be charged ANYTHING until I wanted to receive leads. She said she would take my payment and contact information so that WHEN I DECIDE to get leads, she would then activate the service. However, I NEVER signed up for leads and ended up getting billed $270.94. I've called to resolve this issue, and they have no remorse. They will not refund my money and will continue to move forward with placing it into collections until I pay the remaining balance. I found a service I needed under the yellow pages. The phone number when called reached Home Advisor. I said I found listed Blaylock’s All Task, and in the yellow pages it listed a service I needed. Dryer vent cleaning. I got a call back from Wade Wayne **, I told him I had already spoke with many others that did this job/service and I explained they all explained to me for dryer vent cleaning that they have a machine that pulls with attachment and blows the vent that runs from the hole in the houses and the dryer. Most vents/ducks run under the home and out and cost varied. Also to be cleaned was the flexible lint tube that attached from dryer to opening or the wall that went outside. Also I was told with this kind of service, the dryer was cleaned out as well with top vent.

I had several quotes 150.00, 125.00, 85.00. I asked Mr. ** if this is the kind Dryer Duct/Vent cleaning he could do and he said yes. He said his charge would be 75.00. I said great, we set a date and time. Mr. ** shows up with ONLY a small wet/dry vac. I thought well he might have something else in his two door car? He came in looked it all over and began vacuuming around the dryer and pulled it out and was vacuuming up the lint on the ground. I asked “Are you going to get a machine to run through the long pipe?”

He said no and looked around and on my front porch I had my leaf blower and he seen it and said oh this will work in a pinch. (How Ghetto) I thought how weird... he took it in my home and pulled off the long part of the leaf blower and pushed the blower part on the hole going under the home down the tube. So I followed him out the front door to see if anything came out and my bad luck my ankle turned and I fell just behind him.

Mr. ** helped me up and I was in pain and went to lay down. He went outside to where the dryer blows and he came back in saying "Oh a lot came out", its unplugged? He had nothing in his hands and after he left I seen nothing in my trash container outside. I got up and he starts putting things back where they were and I am like wait a minute... what about my dryer and furthermore, I want to see if air comes out the hole outside. I turned on my dryer and only a whisper of air came out. I came in and told him and he was like well it must be something wrong with your dryer I blew something out with your leaf blower.

I was confused and he was like, I will take my 75.00 now. I felt intimidated… as he stood over me. The job wasn't done by a long shot from everything I asked him and he said he could do, as I asked in the beginning, dryer vent/duct cleaning meaning the vent out the house and the dryer. So intimidated I paid by check and he left, I was so upset. I called my church and they knew someone and he came out.

First this new person said to me anyone would who said they could do dryer vent/duct cleaning would look at the dryer first, like the back of the dryer where the hole is where the lint goes out into the flex pipe and out the duct, out the house! Then inspect the vent you pull out to clean between drying. So this new man got down and put his hand up the hole and could feel the lint... and then took the back off of the dryer. There was a huge amount of lint plugging up the dryer. I took pictures of what the man from my church pulled out. This man from my church said then anyone who says they can do this cleaning has a machine that goes through the vent. And this Mr. ** never checked the back of dryer hole nor have the machine to run through the vent as I told him I was expecting.

I send a picture to Home Advisor and just with that picture Home Advisor said they talked with Mr. ** and he said he doesn't do that as part of dryer vent/duct cleaning. Well he and Home Advisor are false advertising him as this is a part of this type of cleaning. As I stated to them I was very upset and wanted my money back and they refused. Do not use this service of Blaylock All Task in Murfreesboro, TN nor use Home Advisor as they send incompetent people who cannot do the job the advertise. I still have to hire someone to come out with machine to run through the vent under my house as that still has lint stuck to all sides of it.

They continually sent me BOGUS leads over almost a 2 year period and didn't hesitate to charge my credit card for every one of them. Occasionally they would give me a CREDIT for a bad lead, but many times NOT. They like to tell you that, if you follow up on the leads (as I did), you should get about 20-40% of the potential jobs. What a joke! My experience was less than 5%! Just as with many other contractors here, I too received leads that were absolutely BOGUS! They'll also tell you that they won't refer any more than 3 contractors to a particular homeowner request for service.

I had one lead where the homeowner told me she had AT LEAST 6 different contractors contact her from ServiceMagic! Now there's a pissing contest! Anyway, after finally getting tired of the dishonesty, I decided to just let my credit card expire and end our relationship. Guess what? They continued to charge my EXPIRED credit card for more BOGUS leads. That's when I contacted the credit card company and finally ended it, shoving those charges right back in their face! When I bill and actually get results no calls are charged that are not at least 35 seconds. Also my clients get to hear and listen to the calls and see everything with complete transparency. Is such a travesty so many get burned. Since I will follow TOS cannot post anything, but my clients generally see substantial ROI, and if not I refund them, this is how it should be done!

She was acting too Pushy to go for it and as she represented "Ms **, you will see, how many Orders you will receive. You will be so Busy and Blaaa, Blaa blaa." She collects my credit card information and charge it within a week, so which was too shocking for me as she said they will be charged after month. After I asked for credit and they denied to refund back.

As she explained, I was so awaiting on for calls by my client. OMG. Still, there is no single call received by any client and I throw $400 for that bogus marketing trick. I am doubting for even they did mailed to their 2000 clients or not. At so many times I told them to take me out from their stupid Lead program which does not make any sense. You have to pay for their billing, either you receive that deal or not. The most interesting part I found too, even they are not confirming with their client about their posting at all. It is a great money stealing skim to boost the lead from their own people with bogus sign up and they forward to multiple users to collect those monies. Afterward, the original client is invisible to her/his project. As they follow up some steps an example:

Step 1: Some unknown person create fake or bogus account with Home Advisor
Step 2: Home Advisor team forward that lead with their Commission billing to multiple Users

Step 3: The Lord is waiting for billing to pay them from Multiple Users

More like Posted lead is worth $4000
Billing received for around $80 to $200*2000 users = $ 16000 to $ 40000 (If they lead On)
Actual project is worth $4000 and they are collecting money from all around 100 times more than origin.

The Actual client is invisible Or not a serious at all for posted project.

What is the Result came up with??
The result for USERS is $ 0.00 0%. Monies in Pocket to Home Advisor 100%. Even they are not guaranteed for that project either that project is posted for real requirement or just passing time. I told Home Advisor unless I get a refund for such leads I would cancel my account with them. Upon refusing to provide me with a lead refund I cancelled my account. After cancelling my account I learned that the website link Home Advisor had created for my company was modified to discourage would-be customers from hiring me. I expected the website link to be deleted... leading people to a standard "web link not found" error. Instead it read that I was no longer "approved." This made me angry because it sends the very real message that my services are not satisfactory and that my company can not be trusted to do good work.

This is damaging to contractors who have passed around the former "useful" link to view photos of work and learn more about the contractors and companies. So I am contacting a class action lawsuit law firm for possible legal action to stop such practices and seek damages on behalf of all contractors who have cancelled their accounts with Home Advisor and unknowingly been subject to malicious business practices. This has the potential of costing tradesmen thousands of dollars of business depending on how many people have been impacted by the malicious message on the website after the account should have been closed.

It would cost me $30 per month after having references given and a background check. I thought this was promising. I surely didn't wanted my name listed with a bunch of hacks that didn't know what they were doing. The $30 per month to have my business listed seemed reasonable to me. Before ever giving any bank account info to activate my account, I started to receive leads. I never asked for leads. I called them to inform them of their mistake. I didn't want the leads, since I hadn't paid for them and run an honest business. I was informed that I had already been billed for them. 6 leads @ $52 each. WT?! How could I be billed when they had no billing info? They had the name of my bank correct, but a fictitious number.

Apparently the salesperson or anyone else for that matter, decided to fill in bogus bank info. I notified my bank. They told me there was no activity from HomeAdvisor. After numerous phone conversations with HomeAdvisor without resolution, they refused to allow me to talk with the person who sold me on this. I have been a member of this group for many years going way back to the Service Magic beginnings. Since their change, the lead generation service has become tantamount to fraud, since the majority of leads we pay premiums for are unqualified and oftentimes fake, doctored or simply non-existent parties. Over the years, I have been loyal and patient with their automated system, thinking they can understand the nature of their lead business that unless these are qualified, anything can happen. I am now on my 4th fake lead in a row and upon request of this last credit, it brought me to this posting.

Renters are not permitted to authorize remodel or repair work to their rental unit. Our first question is to ask this question. The answer from this per one was a clear "no, I am not the owner, but she is overseas and let me do this."

When I asked for my refund (12 invalid leads in the past 3 months), I was denied and then told in my follow up conversation with their agent that "we tried to verify your position, failed to reach her on three occasions and denied your credit." It took an angry response and 20 minutes to try to explain reason that if they couldn't verify because they never got in touch, it wasn't verified and therefore must be credited.

I have experienced contacts telling me "they never asked for service," "don't know where Home Advisor got their name and contact information" and now "they are not authorized to have work performed." All at an average cost per lead of $45-60. I am sure their reps are nothing more than robots reciting the internal directive to keep all money whether the lead is valid or not, and to fight refunds every way they can. This can be construed as fraud and I would like to know if it is.

Consumer Affairs must look into these services and do something about it, because it is clear. These services think they get away with this practice by simply stating that they are not responsible for providing non-valid leads for lead fees and that the burden of proof, whether proven or not, means it is paid for. The sad part is that many businesses need this service and pay handsomely for the opportunity to work. Losing is part of this process, but not when the deck is stacked in favor of a lead service who can send out any fake name and say it was real, or if it's not, "too bad, pay anyway."

I should have trusted my instincts and hung up the phone. The sales rep promised me the sun and the moon and NOTHING has panned out. I have received zero leads. When the account was initially set up, he added line items of services that we do not provide. This caused me immediate concern because it would have generated false leads and cost me money. I called the sales rep back to discuss not only the listing but the referral he provided on my home page. He used lower case letters, a run on sentence and misspelled the word, "punctual" as "puntcual". He listed the job completed as cleaning ceilings and walls??? We do office cleaning for this client - not ceilings and walls.

I called the rep 5 times and left 2 email messages asking him to fix these items. Despite his promises to be available to me as we get this up and running, he refused to return my calls or emails. I called the tech department and was told that they are unable to fix the typos or any content that was entered with regard to the referral, leaving me with a homepage that is unprofessional and unattractive to potential clients. I signed up for and paid for the 3 month package based on a multitude of false promises. I contacted Home Advisor today and advised that this site is not a good match for my company and I was misled by the sales rep. I pointed out the sloppy home page with incorrect information as well as the promises of a minimum of 15 leads per month and was told I was out of luck. They will not give me a partial refund for the remaining 2 months of my listing. I asked them to link the sales rep into our call so we could discuss his false promises but they refused. They simply will not acknowledge or be responsible for the promises made by their own sales rep.

I believe, based on my dealings, that this company is a fraud! Please beware and please do not sign up. The sales team will tell you anything you want to hear and then will not stand by their word. Today I was told that listing only 8 zip codes for my service area is insufficient and probably why I have received zero leads. The sales rep told me that was more than enough and would attract a significant number of leads. Again, I was mislead. I would strongly urge the public not to use Home Advisor.

He said, "Home Advisor," at which point I told him I wasn't interested and hung up.

He called back and continued as if I had never hung up on him. I politely declined again and told him I did not want to be rude and hang up on him a second time. But he continued with his "closing 101" questions: "so you can't take on new work?" and even sarcastically asked me, "would you happen to know any other companies that could use the business?" I hung up a second time. He calls back again! This time asks to speak to someone else. I tell him there is no else to speak to and he asks for the owner. At this time, I tell him I am the owner and again, that I AM NOT INTERESTED. He proceeds to ask me why (in the hopes of closing me) so I tell him that I used his company when it was ServiceMagic and I was not pleased. He then told me that they were not ServiceMagic. I told him I was still not interested and that he needed to take a hint as at this point, we were both agitated.

He then warned me to take ServiceMagic member off my website. I then asked him, "I thought you guys weren't ServiceMagic." He informs me that ServiceMagic was a subsidiary of Home Advisor. Ahhhhh, I got it now. Thank you. And then proceeded to "warn" me that until it was taken off, I will be getting calls from his company. If this company's marketing and soliciting new customers is anything like this individual, I shudder to think how they would market my leads for me. No thanks guys. No thanks.

I researched the parent company to find this ** company IAC is the parent company which markets within all the websites they own. So I started checking out the other websites and they were using questionnaires to get people's info and were turning the questionnaires into leads for their lead sales to contractors. That's when I cancelled the service and the credit card used to pay for the sales before they could charge me for the balance on my account of bad leads.

Stay away from these lead generation services. They are publicly traded money machines feeding wall street and CEOs and upper management of all these websites they manage.

I started using Home Advisor and immediately got a lead. Well, what I thought to be a lead. The elderly woman lived in an apartment building. I received 6 leads total from them and all the people we called were oblivious to why we were calling. These were not leads at all. They charged my credit card $373.81 from Sept. 27-OCT. 18. Four charges in all. I contacted them on three separate occasions about these leads. They informed me that they would investigate and credit my "account". Little did I know that my "account" was not the credit card they charged, but a credit with them for future bad leads.

After two hours on my 4th attempt for resolution, after getting my credit card statement, they told me they don't give refunds.. I have disputed charges with my credit card company as of 10 minutes ago.. This company is a scam, bottom line. I have a feeling they pull people's information out of the yellow pages and send them to us as leads. One of the contacts we made said we were the 4th company to call about her roof. So if you are a contractor that does lousy work and cannot find business... pay Home Advisor to give you an A+ rating.

The sales pitch was good enough to give this company a shot and I regret having done so. We received 8 leads that were no good. In one instance, I called a child's cell phone and the parents got upset because all they heard was an adult's voice on the other end. I was not able to set a single appointment because the customer was being inundated with multiple calls and completely turned off by the 5 to 6 contractors that were calling them. I complained to their customer service department and was told I had a credit for the bad leads so they offered to give me more bad leads. Now, I have a credit with them that I will never use and getting a refund isn't an option. They don't explain this when signing up. Stay away from this company. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED!!! I was referred to this glass/window repair contractor by Home Advisor. I have been engaged in the process for 4 weeks and yet, no work has been done. This contractor does not return calls, has told me that the work will be done by a certain date (has told me this 2x already), and yet he simply does not show up for the job. He does not have the common courtesy to call a customer to explain why or when he will show. My job is a smaller job, so I am sure he has more money to make elsewhere. However, that is beside the point. If he didn't want to take the job, he should have told me that from the beginning instead of leading me on so that I could have used my own valuable time looking for a dedicated contractor.

My last call to him was this past Tuesday, Oct 22, when I asked for a call back please to simply let me know what his intentions are. He has not bothered to respond. It is late October in Minnesota. The weather is cold already and I still have two non-weather resistant windows in the front of my home that are in desperate need of repair. As I research alternative options to have this work done, I will also be sharing my experience with this irresponsible contractor in all ways possible... social media, this complaint and by word of mouth.

A huge bubble formed under the floors along with some smaller blisters. Today, I finally had someone come to fix the floor after almost 2 months on the phone with Sears being transferred from one party to another. First of all, this man was two hours late. I had wasted a whole day waiting for him. I work full time and had to take the day off. He did fix the main bubble and some of the blisters, but he missed one. When I showed him the remaining blister, he got angry and claimed that I never showed it to him before. He became very rude. He then told me that he was only doing me a favor!

We paid for this defective work only to get attitude! He said he would not fix anything else and he would never come back. He then told me he was going to get something out of his car and come back for me to sign papers. He then got in his car and left to never come back. I also discovered that he left behind loose moldings and chipped tile! Not only did he fail to finish his work, he left damages in my house! I do not quite understand why this happened. Is this man a criminal? I felt threatened! This type of service is beyond unacceptable. Do Sears employees always abuse their customers? Why am I being punished for their poor work? I also e-mailed this to Sears but do not believe they are going to do something about it after 2 months of talking to different people trying to make them fix their terrible job and getting what I just described.

The one customer I met said she was unhappy because the other House Painter who showed up yelled at her husband. Probably his frustration at these bad leads.

The others required real detective persistence to contact with multiple emails and phone numbers. I never even met them. It seems they just weren't interested. Maybe they thought it was an on-line price calculator or something, not knowing real people were paying real money to try and build their real businesses. I went on the HomeAdvisor Pro chat line and the operator was happy to cancel my account. I guess then they can sell the 'vacancy' again for $99. This company also runs a dating service. This company is hurting the economy and not making it any easier for contractors working day to day. It is robbery the way they operate giving 3 contractors the leads for jobs. It should be if the one contractor get the work then he pays for the lead or just send the lead out to one contractor at a time. Also the way it can be equal for all contractors is there is a list of contractors and from the bottom to the top is how the leads are giving out one at a time. Because people are very upset trying to make a living with this horrible system for a website. Home Advisor does deceiving business practices. We were insulted, outraged, wronged in every possible way by a SADL Construction referred to us by Home Advisor.

We hired this company on 7/10/2013 to do our house plan in 3 weeks. But we had the worst and disastrous experience of our lives. The most unprofessional and rudest people ever. As if we had paid them to outrage us, sending repeated mistakes, over and over, and when we complained with the owner about the mistakes and delays, he could not be ruder, harshly hanging up the telephone on us, and saying he was going to handle things his way, period. It is his way or no way. He vetoed direct contact with the designer, imposing us putting his name on the To: and cc: for designer; otherwise, he would not reply, etc. The most ridiculous behavior ever! We had to deal with a dictatorship for 2 months. We were humiliated every single day either by email or by phone!!!

SADL Construction never finished the project and the little they did, cost us blood tears, full of mistakes. It was a complete nightmare, but when we file a formal complaint with Home Advisor, they did practically nothing to help the situation. After 2 months struggling with the ordeal, we placed a bad review online about this company on their website, and they did not issue it. We called to know what had happened; they issued to remove it the very next day stating that the company had 10 days to dispute it. We called 10 days later on 10/4/2013 to know the resolution, and they told us to file a formal complaint again. We have proved our case in every way possible through over 200 emails, and they come to say that we have to start all over again. This is outrageous!!! We were doubly stepped on by Home Advisor and by SALD Construction.

Home Advisor prefers to sacrifice the consumer and to protect the contractors because they are the ones who pay, regardless of their professionalism. So, consumers don't use their supposedly free services because you will end up paying dearly!!!

Taking my down payment, not showing up when expected, taking two months to complete the job, and then refusing to return a second down payment that was paid to him for a second job (the day he showed up for the first job). When I contacted HomeAdvisor with my concerns, they made it appear as if they cared and let me know that there was a $500 guarantee for work if it isn't completed. They said they would facilitate between me and the contractor to get it resolved. All they have been successful at doing is aiding him in his avoidance of returning the deposit. They are now allowing him to state that he is owed the money because he had to work longer because he was unable to rent a truck and chipper to complete the work and thus had to do it by hand. This isn't my problem, it is his. HomeAdvisor is paid by contractors for leads... that is who they care about. Not the customer.

I filled in my contact information, online, to receive referrals to have my deck redone. Immediately my phone started ringing. The first person wanted to come over right now, but was reasonable when I said no, and I said I would call him back. Twenty minutes later, a man from another company called, Perfect View, in Hillsboro ,OR, showed up at our house unannounced, and became angry when we told him we hadn't asked for him to come, and that he would have to make other arrangements.

He demanded that we pay him $20.00, if we weren't going to let him give us an estimate. He said it had cost him $20.00 to obtain the referral. He argued with my husband, and sat outside our home in his car for another ten minutes. During that time he called us again. We didn't answer, and were at the point of calling the police, when he finally drove off. It was frightening! I'm usually very careful with my personal information, and this was a real wake up call for me. How HomeAdvisor is allowed to keep operating is beyond me.

I did and the most prevalent number available ended up being through HomeAdvisors. Though the woman that answered the phone at HomeAdvisors was polite she said that "Nico's is not available or taking new appointments" - later when I told her I was referred to them she restated it to say that "Nico's was not taking appointments through HomeAdvisors" (Now I see).

I told her I was referred to Nico's by a happy customer which is why I needed them. She restated that they are not taking appointments with HomeAdvisors but they have other qualified, licensed insulation professionals that she can get an appointment for. I was going to say no but she proceeded to tell me about the company who she was going to get the insulation estimate for us. Perkins Energy Conservation should be able to get someone out right away. She would just check with them real quick to see how soon. She asked me for my email and other things...I asked - "Is it only for this company and this request?" She said yes.

She put me on hold for at least a couple minutes and never ended up coming back. While I was on hold "so she could connect me to this Perkins company", my cell phone rang from another company (Williams Insulation) who obviously already got the lead from her. And they were trying to schedule an appointment (I did set the appointment because I figure if someone is that quick to respond then I am interested in talking with them about the services I need). I don't know if Nico's ever utilized their services previously but as a business owner I would be very upset that they are stealing my leads. She told me one thing about a particular company to keep me drawn in but already sent my information to someone else! I never gave her permission to send it out to multiple companies.

Shortly after I received an email from HomeAdvisors regarding "ProFinder Matches" giving me 3 companies, two of which she never mentioned and one was Perkins. And, the "Williams Insulation company" who had already called me was not on the list. The "Perkins Energy Conservation" company was the 3rd on the list and it was not based on alphabetical order so I am not sure what's up with that. Probably a premium placement paid by the top company on the list. I will see how Williams Insulation does at holding their appointments and timeliness but I am concerned about HomeAdvisors. I would caution a company from utilizing their services if they are going to give away my leads after I do a good job and get referrals. If Nico's has never used them - I would be getting a hold of my lawyer.

Just know if you use HomeAdvisors that you are going in to a lead generation mill and anyone who pays to get them will get your information and not necessarily with your approval. And, why is HomeAdvisors still utilizing advertising for Nico's (in my opinion riding their reputation) and a different number than their true business number?

I have been receiving emails and phone calls telling me that I owe them money for leads recently that I did not receive. I told them that I had turned off my leads and that they took it upon themselves to turn them on. So I am not paying for anything, especially since I did not receive them.

Now they are threatening me that if I don't pay they will send me to a collection agency and hurt my credit rating. I told them that if they did that, I would start my own legal action against them and call the NJ State attorney general and consumer affairs plus I would give them as much bad press as I could. I don't understand how a company that spends SO much on advertising and gets so many hits on their website, can't seem to have a better system in place to qualify the leads they get. I think they are just trying to take advantage of service professionals because they, as well as a lot of people surfing the net, believe we are desperate to get a lead because of the way the economy is. They figure that they will get as much money from us as they can and when we figure out that the service is bogus, they will just kick us aside and go on to the next service professional and do the same to them.

They changed their name from Service Magic to HomeAdvisor because they had such a terrible reputation that they needed to start their process all over with a new name to keep taking advantage of us... To my surprise, HomeAdvisor who I have no connection to hit my bank account for $143. I have called many times but just keep getting people who know nothing about it. Now I have to change my bank account to stop them. Stay away from these people. Nothing good will come out of it. I'm in PA so I guess they figure I can't get to them. Beware of this company.

Customer Service representatives are all robots reading the same script, "It is our policy not to give refunds". I spoke with 6 or 7 of them. I lost count. The customer service managers are always in meetings. Unbelievable!

I have been with HA for about four months. I have a cleaning service so I decided to try HA to help me get clients! Out of about 15 customers, I only closed two. One day, I decided to turn off my leads so Home Advisor decided to turn my leads back on two days later so I get a lead. I immediately called them and asked her if she still needs someone to clean her home and she replied no, I found someone. So I asked her when she put in her request for cleaning and she told me three days ago. So Home Advisor sent me leads they sent everybody else and then turn around and sent them to me two days later after the customer already found someone. I will advise you not to use Home Advisor unless you want to be ripped off. One more thing, I think they have people to call you like they're wanting to have service just so they can get money.

I am a contractor and have used their services since 2007. The larger they get, the more they advertise, the worse the leads. I have them now turned off. It has become an enormous waste of money. The quality of leads are horrific. They continue to raise their rates to pay for all their advertising, but my leads are going south. The emails or phone numbers are bogus. The people you do finally connect with only want the cheapest and most aren't even seriously looking. They say things like, "I just saw this type of work on HGTV and was just curious about the cost. I don't need this." If you contact them to get lead replacements, you are fighting an uphill battle. Don't waste your money. Use all that money for your own online presence. The leads are so far from quality that you are just throwing your money out the window.

Every time you call, the customer doesn't answer and their phones do not exist. Even emails don't exist. They take money on your face. Sometimes people need work request information and they charge you for that too. I know it's hard when you start a business, but for sure you don't want this company to take your money. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT RELIABLE PEOPLE.

Plymouth, MA hired a contractor through HomeAdvisor. He never finished the job. However, against my better judgement, I paid him early due to his having to compensate his employees (he is in his late teens, early 20s and gave me a sob story and I bought it). I'm out $550 and I have had to pay additional cash to complete the job he never finished. When I called HA to complain, I was transferred about 4 or 5x, gave the same story to each person and was told, "No, that is not what we expect and we will help you fix this situation by sending someone out to finish." This was a lie! They asked me to give them 48 hrs to contact the contractor (their policy) and they did touch base and he promised to contact us; he didn't. I sent a copy of my check as well as the photos of the unfinished work. They said they were sorry but they couldn't help me but I could leave a review for him. Really?! A review? Well, when you add my review with the 2 good reviews guess what? He looks awesome. He was a huge waste of time and HA is one of the biggest rip offs I've been involved with. Do yourself a favor and stay away!

I subscribed to ServiceMagic (now HomeAdvisor) and then looked at the reviews online. Equipped with the knowledge of the very many negative reviews, I watched them closely and with skepticism. Sure enough, the scene was playing out similar to the many I had read about. We had been going through a short period with little work when I subscribed. We resumed with our normal busy schedule, with more jobs than we can keep up with, not from leads generated by ServiceMagic, but by repeat customers and using word of mouth and customer referrals as our only form of advertising. After being billed for several leads we did not use, I requested ServiceMagic stop my service. The salesman was a very hard sell, and would not back down and take no for an answer.

About a year later, I got a charge on my Visa for $149 for a website they had done for us but we were not using. I called them and told them that I had not authorized this charge and I wanted a full refund. Their response was, "Doggone it; unfortunately I can't do that. We sent you emails stating we were going to charge you," I had received 2 emails from HomeAdvisor stating that my account was on hold, since my info needed updating. Because I had requested my service be stopped, I assumed that since I was on hold, and by my not responding and updating my info, no more charges would be made without my authorization. Wrong!

I have since changed my Visa account number and I also again told HomeAdvisor that I wanted all services ended immediately. After reading all of the other reviews (79% with only one star), I just hope I will not be charged by them again. My suggestion to anyone considering working with HomeAdvisor is run, don't walk away.

I used Home Advisor's website and actually hired a contractor that was listed. The contractor did an awful job, damaged my property, didn't clean up, etc., nor did they honor their warranty. When I contacted (HA) about their written guarantee, they made it virtually impossible to qualify. When I attempted to write a review, they (HA) restricted what my review could say, stating that I must be able to prove my review. That's why reviews are mostly very high. Use them as a "yellow pages" list of contractors only.

I use Savvyshopper, Postcards and Kudzu.com and get better results with these avenues but I still get a lot of tire kickers. That is sales, folks. ServiceMagic is okay if you have time to sit by your phone and wait for a lead or are just starting your business. I've sold cars for 4 years. I was in the mortgage business for 7 years. My point is, most people waste your time in any sales situation.

I am a class A contractor, homebuilder, and remodeling contractor. I used ServiceMagic for 11 months in 2009/2010. My specialty was kitchen and bath remodels since the sub-prime lending practices ruined home building. These were big ticket items that most people understand little about the costs associated with major renovations. In that time, I received 63 leads. Out of these leads, I received two jobs. I spent most of my time fighting SM for credits, as 9 out of 10 leads I received were bogus, i.e. address doesn't exist; it's an apartment; the address exists but the people don't know what I'm talking about; and the person doesn't exist.

One lead that I remember vividly, the guy thought he could remodel a hall bath for nothing. Just to see what he would say and for giggles, I gave him a price of $2,200, which you can't even get the materials for, let alone the labor and he thought that was outrageous. I think he was about my 1st of 2nd lead I actually met with. Another lady I called received something like 10 contractors calling her. I read this happened to another contractor. To me, a lead is someone where you can get in front of, especially if you are forking over $60/per! I think I only got in front of 12 potential customers and some of these were fishing to see how desperate contractors were due to the economy.

Another issue I ran into was that some of my competitors weren't even class A and didn't carry the proper insurance, so they were coming in with a rock-bottom price and as a reputable quality, service orientated company, some people were just shopping price without concern for the final product. A person in my neighborhood didn't use me but went with the cheaper guy. I ran into him in the grocery store a year later and he had a horrible experience. Regarding my closing ability, I used to be a salesman many years ago. I sold high pressure items as well as cars. I was salesman of the month for several months, so I am at the least a very good closer. Closing wasn't the issue; it was their crappy leads. SM also had some very good debate angles to attempt to sell me on why I should roll over and accept that there are a percentage of leads that are no good.

I never accepted that and spent the time to fight them on each and every one. Their goal was to break me through frustration, but being the tight budget guy that I am and realist, I realized that I could play their game too, so I kept them on the line for hours at a time until they finally gave me my refunds. In the end and after the final straw was broken, I told them I was contacting the State Corporation Commission in CO, as well as the Colorado Attorney General office and file a formal complaint. That wound up being more difficult than it should have been, so I contacted my credit card, filed a formal dispute on all charges I had received for a 90-day period, and changed my credit card account number so any future attempts on their part would be denied. I received my money back from those crooks.

In summary, these people are thieves, scum and outright liars. Their website is not user friendly and I believe many of the bogus leads I received the people were only looking for information and got sucked into it further. I would never stoop so low as to do business with them again and warn you that even if you are in dire straits, do not use them! I'm still pissed 2 years later and actually did a Google search in hopes of seeing them out of business only to find they changed their name and have several pending lawsuits against them. I hope they get sued to the max and get shut down. I really do!

I too am a service professional with ServiceMagic/HomeAdvisor. I have 28 ratings, almost all 5 stars. So, I have got some clients from them. Over all, their leads suck and have become increasingly worse and more challenging to turn a lead into profit. Their system seems to automatically decline request for credit on a bad lead even if the reason is legit according to their policy. I have had some reversals on their decision upon calling them, but one should not have to go through all that to get a credit for a bad lead.

Plus, that's how I found out they often don't even check the details when a request is sent in on their system. It’s simply declined without a logical explanation. Recently, I received a lead when my leads where supposed to be off. Again, automatically declined. Their system makes it overly easy to mistakenly turn your leads back on without knowing it. I will be calling to see why and how this happened; but regardless of the outcome, I will close my account with them. I usually have my leads turned off because I wanted to stay with them in case they improved.

Usually, the only time I get leads is when I forget to turn my leads off again after the 2 week limit. As seldom as my leads have been on it seems the last ten leads or so were awful. It’s just too easy for a person on the web that's bored, curious, or just price shopping to fill out a form that they don't know is costing 3-4 contractors’ real money. Even with the legit leads, it’s become too much of a hassle trying to drop my prices to rock bottom to gain their business over competing companies. Especially since our focus is not on doing the cheapest work but on doing high quality work.

I do not rate this company as a good company. First, the first time I spoke to the person trying to get me to sign on, he said there was one fee unlike other companies. Well that was surely not true. Also, out of the 19 listings, I found only 4 to be legit. Their sales pitch is totally unclear after using this company. Now they say I owe $283.00. When I asked them to cancel my account, they said I owed $218.00. So where did the extra come in? I spent more paying this company than I made in 4 referrals that were legit.

I used to be a professional for ServiceMagic. I got in the hole because of all the bad leads. They charge us up to $70 per lead, and if you get a bad lead, you have to dispute it and that takes literally months. Anyway, this time, I told them that I was filing chapter 13 and I'd rather get reinstated and pay my bill. I was promised that with the new HomeAdvisor, the leads would be real, not all phony made-up charges. I paid my bill, got my first lead for a charge of $70, and right off the bat, it was a bad lead. The consumer had no idea why I was calling him. Then I tried to get in to my account to complain and I can't get in.

Now, they are telling me that I cannot be a professional on their site because of the chapter 13. So we were totally lied to just so we would not file against them. There are many, many other places to go to get leads. I say yeah, HomeAdvisor is a total rip off just as ServiceMagic was. I keep trying to call this Mark guy who told me that everything was good to go. Then, there is Robert, the main manager, who called it all a huge misunderstanding. There was no misunderstanding, only another scam by HomeAdvisor to rip off another professional looking for work.

I have 25 top reviews from my clients I received from SM (HomeAdvisor). I say this to show I am not some angry client and I am a good builder that knows what’s up. As a contractor, I recommend you stay far away. They have a very confusing site for the homeowner, and the lead accuracy is almost nil. About 80% of the leads you receive will be wrong. And if you want a credit, you have to ask; and even then, it may be denied. So then you have to call. This takes your precious time. The scroll down menus to file a credit request are amazingly poor, and they are mandatory. You find one, but their construction terminology doesn't exist, so you can’t choose the right one. Most of the leads you do receive that are correct you will not land unless you are the lowest bidder. Some of the leads generated will be sent to you in the wee hours of the morning when you are asleep and cannot respond. They will not credit these, and you will lose every one. You can ask for your leads to be sent before 9pm and after 7 am, but you will still pay for all leads generated no matter what time.

I have spoken with their management team many times, and they all agree that the site needs readjustment, and they all say they send all complaints up the line. Nothing ever gets fixed though. Yet they will tell you that they will build you a website and it will be the best. But they can't fix their own. They will also tell you that they changed the name from Service Magic to HomeAdvisor because they feel the name is more accurate. I will tell you that it's probably because of the literally 1000s of poor reviews attached to the name. Bottom line is if you are a consumer, then beware. If you are a service professional, just stay away. If you google them, you will see the vast majority of reviews are negative. That should tell a smart consumer something I would think.
