Updated on 01/21/2020: After several email exchanges with Generac, the last one on 1/10/20, I have NOT heard a reply concerning their validating my claim for an extended warranty commitment. According to the last reply from Generac, they asked for the model and serial number of my equipment (which I immediately provided) presumably to verify my installation qualified for their "free" extended warranty. Needless to say, it should NOT require 10+ days for a response.

In the interim, I went on the Generac website and there for ALL TO SEE is an offer from Generac for a FREE-7 YEAR WARRANTY WHEN YOU SCHEDULE A FREE IN-HOME ASSESSMENT!!! Apparently, you don't have to buy and install a Generac generator to qualify for this extended warranty.... All you have to do is SCHEDULE a representative to come out and look.... Yet Generac is trying to deny the extended warranty to someone who not only has installed the generator but who also has purchased two other Generac units as I have described at length in my original comments! Does anyone in Generac customer relations TALK to their marketing/sales department?? Not only is customer relations a joke, they are ignorant as well!

Original Review: This is my third experience with Generac. The product is well made and if serviced properly performs as specified. The problem is the manufacturer and their customer relations attitude. Their basic attitude is one of denial of any culpability or responsibility with regard to warranty. If the installing dealer is reputable and responsible then a Generac installation makes sense. I have had 3 installation / servicing dealers and all were very good. In 2 of the installations, I have had problems with Generac warranties or promises.

Installation # 1: Installed a 25 KW water cooled unit with a steel cover. Installing dealer offered both steel and aluminum covers with the aluminum costing $600 more w/o specifying a potential rust problem in a subtropical climate. In less than a year, the unit was a rusted hulk. Generac denied any responsibility and refused to replace the steel cover. Ultimately after 6 months of correspondence they agreed to supply the dealer with an aluminum cover @ a "discounted" price and I had to pay for removal and installation of a new cover.

After 13 years, I was being nickeled and dimed with repair and maintenance problems with the 25 kw unit and replaced it with a new 22 kw air cooled unit. I contracted with the servicing dealer to replace the unit. After installation the dealer placed an ad offering a "free 7 year extended warranty" for new installations. When I asked for the extended warranty, the dealer told me "The warranty is ONLY for new installations which included wiring in a transfer switch and a permit." Since my installation only required hooking up to an already installed transfer switch, Generac refused to honor the extended commitment.... Yet there was absolutely NO MENTION OF THIS SUPPOSED REQUIREMENT in their ad. Any reasonable Co. in the interests of customer relations would have not hesitated to agree to the coverage. Shame on me for dealing with Generac again!

The 3rd installation is another 22 KW unit in a colder climate with an excellent dealer. To date, no problems. What is personally annoying to me is not only have I used Generac 3 times, but I have personally been responsible for two friends buying Generac units on my recommendation. Bottom line: The product is good; the installing/servicing dealer is key; the Co. has a severe attitude problem and does everything it can to deny coverage or responsibility for their products. Be forewarned!

Updated on 01/07/2020: Update - just spent about an hour on the phone with customer service / warranty people. They told me that they have no contact with the service side or warranty side of Generac business & they can only contact the servicing dealer I am already dealing with. This company is a total joke. Warranty on a brand new (30 hr of run time) generator is worthless. If you buy a generac be warned - should have bought a Kohler.

Original review: Generator was professionally installed 1/19/19 - had only run for the weekly exercise until a storm that hit the beginning of November 2019. Power was out for 2.5 days, generator came on for 24 hrs then shut off. I opened the cabinet to find oil everywhere. Generator automatically shut off due to low oil in engine. The oil apparently leaked from front main seal & the fan blew it all over the inside of cabinet. Called Generac for warranty claim and start warranty process. It became my job to contact Generac authorized service tech. The generator is still in the same condition - not replaced or repaired as of 1/7/2020. Don't buy this garbage that they don't stand behind. Buy a Kohler.

I just installed new generator week ago and today I spent some time enabling its wifi. It was very disappointing. First of all, you can't do anything from PC. You can register and create account on mobilelinkgen.com, but after that you can't even login to their website, can't see your generator status, nothing. They offer ios and droid application, but free application doing really NOTHING. After two hours of network installation I have downloaded their free application, started it and.... it says "your generator is ready and battery is ok". That is it, and there are totally nothing else there.

You can get a little more if you pay advanced application, it is $50 a year (half thousands dollars per decade!!!). But all it adds is ability to see exercise history. You can't remote control your generator, wont see any details. Nothing. And $50 a year after you paid $5000 for generator and was promised for "wifi enabled"? Seriously? It's more looks like "WiFi Disabled".

I am retracting this review. Dealer notified me that I did receive the 10 year promotional warranty after all. I verified this with Generac customer service. This could have been totally avoided if Generac had informed me of this when I initially called or when I made a subsequent call. I have no complaint otherwise with Generac or the dealer, Warren Welding. Warren recently serviced my generator and did a great job. My apologies to Steve ** and his company for my previous review.

    Original Review: Jan. 3, 2020

I purchased a 22 kW generator and ATS on 7/28/2018 during a free 10 year warranty promotional period. Serial number is 3002920159, model number is G0070431. I have called customer service a couple of times and the dealer, Warren Welding in Berryville, Arkansas, multiple times to get the required paperwork submitted to Generac so I can get the 10 year extended warranty. This has been going on for over a year and I still have not been able to get this issue resolved. It appears that Generac and their dealers look for every excuse they can to cheat customers out of these warranty promotions that are offered as a sales incentive. Really a bad customer experience for me and I plan on telling everyone I can about this. Wish I would have gone with a different manufacturer now.

Purchased generator, open box contacted Generac that few parts missing. They told me to contact parts and order missing parts but not their problem. I purchased parts. Went to use generator for first time with new camper and 30amp 110 plug did not work, later after using 30 amp 220 plug stop working after using twice on well. Used the 50 amp 120/240 plug until 50 hour oil change. Dealer found breaker weak and needed to be replaced. Generac would not cover under warranty, due to I put in warranty registration year and half after purchase. I thought I had registered at time I was looking for parts but had no proof. Take screen shots or you end up with a bill of $224.03 for new breaker and $75.00 install charge.

I asked for estimates from 3 companies to buy and install subject generator. Generac advertised that if you bought the generator before a certain ended that you got a very long extended warranty so I chose them also because of reviews of other companies offerings. I chose one company over the other very good companies because of price and the Big box outlet that would provide a contractor that would install the unit after Big box outlet purchased it. The installer was also a recognized installer by Generac.

The General contractor got the unit received from the Big Box store and did all the electrical and foundation work and subcontracted to a piping company to make necessary black iron connections to my natural gas line and the Generator. It turns on for 5 minutes once every week for a self test. Thankfully a couple of days following installation we had a power outage and it kicked in and did what it was supposed to do. What I didn't like was some person at generac saying I didn't qualify for extended warranty. I turned it over to big box to deal with it AND GOT IT! WATCH OUT FOR THOSE PEOPLE. LITTLE LATE TO SEND BACK ESPECIALLY AFTER ALREADY SPENDING 12k!

In a nutshell. Went to Generac's dealer/service portal to find a handful of companies that are supposedly capable of servicing my whole home 35kw generator. Not one of the so called "authorized" dealers is trained for liquid cooled generators, only air cooled. One dealer said they could service liquid cooled but when technician arrived he said "I need to be truthful with you. I am not certified in liquid cooled." Received bill for $292 and absolutely nothing was done to my generator. Nothing! So now I have to pay $270 each way for travel time for a dealer that's 2 hours away from me, $135 per hour travel time.

In preparation for the new servicing dealer, I reached out to Generac so I could preorder a Control Board to have on hand for the service call and the Generac rep gave me the part number for the board. Ordered it from one of there resellers for $420. When part arrived it was different than the one in the generator. $45 dollars in shipping costs out of my pocket and in addition to that a 15% restocking fee for the wrong part. Good times. In the meantime, no working generator because no qualified servicing dealers and roughly $400 spent out of my pocket for NOTHING. Customer service lead Greg at Generac won't return my calls. Generac doesn't care one bit about their customers. They refuse to accept responsibility that their dealer network isn't up to par. There is a huge disconnect. Find another manufacturer that can be there when you need them.

The local service had to call and see if transfer switch was covered.

The service provider called back and said not covered. I called Generac again and they said it was covered by warranty since I bought as a package. I called service rep back and was told that he would not respond unless I agreed to pay $900 dollars for him to look at transfer switch which I new needed part 0D9618. The service rep said that if part D9618 was needed he would have to call Generac and let Generac determine if the part had a factory defect. If the was determined over the phone that it wasn't a factory defect the warranty wouldn't be covered. The rep said that he would not get paid for the trip and his time by generac if not factory defect.

I purchased a home Generac system to ensure that my medical equipment would always be powered during an outage AND for the promotional 10 yr ext warranty. I am a disabled responder due to 9/11 RELATED ILLNESSES and this was vital to ensure my breathing equipment would not be interrupted. Unfortunately I submitted my promotional submission a week late so it was denied (the 10 yr promotional warranty).

I phoned and spoke to Alice and explained that I was in and out of the hospital during this time and also out of state in the Mayo Clinic performing numerous tests regarding my health for which I would gladly forward medical documents proving my reason. Alice who then transferred me to her supervisor Linda clearly stated it was late and nothing can be done. I replied, "I am a disabled responder who was in the hospital having days of medical tests and you're telling me you could care less?" Her response - It was late regardless of the reason so sorry but nothing can be done. I stated it was only a week late because I returned home.

This is disgusting and un-American to treat a disabled responder as such. I stated again, "I was in the hospital having a cerebral spinal tap in addition to other tests and returned home after the due date from the hospital for which I will gladly submit my private medical records as proof but you're blaming me because my health was affected due to helping others?" I WILL NEVER SUPPORT THIS COMPANY AGAIN NOR SHOULD ANY ANYONE FOR THEIR LACK OF COMPASSION. Normally you hear, thank you for your service but Generac has no appreciation for the sacrifices made by the military or responders who risk their life and health on a daily basis.

Approximately 12 years ago, I purchased a Generac Guardian Elite generator which cost me $12,000. Overall, including the construction costs and maintenance costs the machine has cost me approximately $22,000 to $25,000 over this period. The machine worked well in the first year but has never worked properly since that time.

It simply does not startup when the electricity goes out. It must be turned on manually and even then it does not always work. Three different Generac trained technicians have looked at it and none can figure out why this machine simply does not turn on when power in the house fails. Generac has never stood behind the product and the technicians designated by Generac have given up on it. Moreover, these technicians take weeks to show up to try to correct a problem when it generator is down.

I bought the machine because my wife is blind and paralyzed due to multiple sclerosis and a stroke. When the electricity goes out for any extended period, she winds up in the hospital. I counted on Generac to help me and it failed to do so. My experience suggests that this company's advertising is misleading. Less than a year after installation of my home generator I had the local dealer service it to be sure it was working before hurricane season started. The serviceman discovered that the battery charger circuit board was not working. He ordered a replacement and told me it should be covered under warranty. A few weeks later I received a bill for over $600.00 from the dealer. They said that the warranty claim was denied.

I contacted Generac and was told that there were “bugs” in the board and that the warranty didn’t cover insect damage. I requested that they return the damaged board to me, but they never responded. I saw the board when it was removed and there was no visible damage. I’m sure the only “bugs” were electronic bugs, not insects. Several months after I ordered the generator and before it was delivered, my home was hit by a hurricane. Power was out for ten days. My neighbors Generac Generator failed after the first few days. I should have tried to cancel my order at that point but the dealer was not responding to my calls. I sent in a request for a price on a home generator through Generac’s website and was quickly contacted by two local dealers. First one commented on what an easy job it would be but then gave an installation charge of $3400.00. The second dealer was within the price range I had been told to expect, by family and friends who had also purchased a Generac generator so I signed an agreement with him. He required payment for the generator, $4500, before he would order the generator so I wrote him out a check. It has been a nightmare ever since.

Not only does this dealer not return calls, but he has said on 3 different occasions via text that he would be out to install but then doesn’t show or call. It has been 4 months since I paid for the generator. I did a google search to see if anyone else has had issues and discovered that this dealer is a registered sex offender. I have contacted Generac and they say they can’t do anything about it. My agreement is with the dealer, not them. The generator dealer for Generac that I bought the unit from out of Marion, Ohio in 2010 went out of business in 2013. I do not have the service records during that period of time. I know there were several. Since 2013, I have had 17 issues that needed addressed by service techs. It is suppose to adjust its speed to match the electric load needed in the home. Whenever a major appliance comes on in the house, all the lights flicker, other appliances shutter (like refrigerators, A/C units, etc.), then the generator accelerates and everything brightens again. Generac Power Systems does not stand behind their warranty. I purchased a standby generator in 2016 and the extended warranty in 2018. A few days ago, the Generac cold weather kit shorted and blew fuses and caused the genny to not operate. Generac denied the warranty service due to it being an "accessory" not part of the generator.

First they claimed no warranty at all and then changed their response to it is a 90 day warranty. That is ridiculous. They were unable to provide me with a copy of the so-called warranty upon request and I was not given one at purchase or install. I don't believe it actually exists as a separate item. The authorized repairman who diagnosed and fixed the problem said that it was from the rubber at under the battery would become grooved due to vibration in normal service and that the battery and a cable would evenutally short out. They have seen this before and he states that Generac no longer puts the mat in place due to this issue.

I think Generac should acknowledge the design flaw in the Generac cold weather kit as sold to me instead of trying to hide behind a so-called 90 day warranty excuse that either did not exist at the time of the sale or was not given to me. Either way, the kit was attached to the only item that had a provided warranty and is supposed to be covered for parts and labor. I am being charged $115.41 for the repair job and it should be $0.

I purchased a Generac 20kw standby generator in 2011 and had it installed. We live in an area where power outages are rare so the bulk of the time on the generator are the weekly exercise hours. I followed their maintenance procedures to the letter and then some. As per their service schedule, I changed the oil and filter after the 8 hour break in period and then twice a year as opposed to their suggested 200 hours or every 2 years. Spark plugs and air filter were changed yearly as opposed to their suggested 2 year/200 hours. The generator is placed in a non dusty environment and we are nowhere near the beach so salt air is not a factor. After 112 hours of run time the oil pump is not producing sufficient pressure and the generator shuts down. The oil pump is buried in the center of the engine block so changing that is not an option.

Long story short, I need a new engine to the tune of $1500. I understand that the unit is out of the 3 year warranty, but Generac will only warranty a new engine for 90 days. They consider it a part. If this was a car it would only have approximately 4000 miles on it and need a new engine. I am completely disappointed in their customer service and willingness to stand behind their products. I’m not asking for a free engine, but just a warranty longer than 90 days on a new. In a nutshell, if you’re planning on spending $10000-$12000 on a generator I would check out other brands prior to Generac.

They have turned a great product in to a piece of junk. You have to have activation codes connect to wifi, and have a degree in computer science to use the new standby generator. When I called customer service to help with getting it started he was very disrespectful. If you move the generator from its first location to another house it will not run and voids warranty. Ask a lot of questions before you buy their new products, old stuff was great now not so much. He said now it is like Windows software you truly don't own it they have to approve every thing. It will not run if the software is not up to-date. You have to have internet wifi to update or a memory stick to update or run it in limp mode, it's not a generator. It's a computer. If you live in the city and are a Millineal you might like it but over 40 and live in the country forget it.

Keep in mind this is less that 1 yr. I was told no warranty because its off the grid. Meaning no other power source. This generator is a big generator and was purchased solely to power the cabin. Generac kept pushing back the delivery date, finally telling us in January that they couldn't get the diesel engine. We had to cancel the order and got an RMA to return the ATS that had been delivered. We shipped the switch back on 1/10. The switch was received on 1/14 by Generac (have POD). As of 2/12, they claim the RMA is still in progress and have not issued credit (approximately $1000). Generac will not speak with me, saying I have to go through their distributor. Poor product, customer support and recall policy - I had a 17kw unit installed by Generator Supercenter of Tomball TX in December 2011. Starting in mid 2017 when the power did go out, generator would kick in but the lights would flicker the whole time. I went out and checked finding an Under-voltage message on the display and it would shut down 30 seconds into the weekly cycle. Around the same time, I received a letter from Generac stating that there is a potential problem with the plenum leaking gas and causing a fire. They stated that the service call would be $85 unless a problem was found and covered under the recall.

I figured I better have this checked since the unit had the potential to start my house on fire. When the tech came out, he stated the there was no leak but that the rotor/stator was bad and putting out no voltage. It would have to be ordered and replaced and gave he gave me an estimate of $2,557.47. He said he could order the part right away and it would be in within 2 weeks. Now having a dead generator, I agree to the repair. Two weeks later, I received a call from GSC telling me that my unit was discontinued and that the part would not be available for 3 months. They told me that they would look for one at various depots and would call me if they found one.

After not hearing from GSC for 3 1/2 months. I called them and they told me that the part was no longer available at all! Not knowing what to do, I asked them if I needed a whole new generator and they said that they would contact high level support at Generac to see if something could be done. The next day they called me and said that they could retrofit a different part for the same price I was quoted. I agreed to this and the new part worked but now I was back to the same Under-voltage problem. When a different tech came out he found that the control unit was bad and would cost additional $949.28 to replace! After all of this I'm out $3,703.75 for a unit that has less than 20 hrs run time on it. BTW, the next time Generac sends me a letter stating that they want to charge me for a service call due to their design/manufacturing defect, I think I will ignore it!

The rep came the end of August/beginning of September but said the installation would not be until February. I looked the company up online and their reviews were terrible- Barros Companies. Still I had no option as they are the Generac contractor through HD.

They finally called the third week of January to schedule work. It was impossible dealing with the woman on the phone who was scheduling. She would say work would be done on a certain day and then claim she never said that. She would say she would call back and then never call back. The owner eventually called to apologize but they didn’t come the next day to finish the work nor did they call to tell me when they are coming.

John the owner said the light should be green on the generator and that it’s up and running, even though the trench isn’t filled, the pipes aren’t painted, and the electrical inspection hasn’t happened. When I went outside the light is red. I don’t know if I am supposed to turn it on or what. But since they aren’t finished I am afraid to. We live in an area in Massachusetts that loses power. We have a well. My husband is getting over cancer. I am afraid if and when they finally finish, will they respond at all or in a timely manner if there is a problem. Why, they claim that the dealer did not submit the necessary paperwork, although I have copies of the unit having been properly registered with Generac.

Turns out that this advertised incentive only applies if you submit an entirely different set of papers, including an original sales receipt (why? It is already on their site) - they claim that these instructions were contained somewhere on their website - of course the copy of the promotion that I was given makes no mention of this! PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT AND BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT TRUSTING THEM! The unit works great, their customer service does not! Only the right company will have the right service guys. The wrong service guys will be back to fix something shortly after they service your unit. It won't be covered under warranty. After you buy, the problems you have will always be because of something your installer, who will probably be someone besides the party who sold it to you, did wrong. It would be nice if Generac spent some of their money being used to suck you in to help you after they've sucked you off. I've never read where they helped anyone that was slightly out of warranty or really did anything decent for people who gave them their money.

If you can't find anything to buy from anyone else, buy your Generac from the guy who is going to install it. I am in the market for a fourth generator, it will not be a Generac even though I think I've found the right service guy who could sell me one. While searching for this guy, I talked to one company who would be happy to sell me a new one but they wouldn't touch any I already owned because they didn't sell them. Second, yellow light came on. Repaired, failed to cycle for the 5 minute weekly check. (Twice.) Installer (who has been great) had to replace plugs because of improper factory settings. Third, problem in starting again, thinks it might be a computer control problem this time, jury is still out.

I had a 20 KW Generac Synergy model installed this summer (June 2018). I chose the Synergy model after reading that it would be quieter running and save fuel due to the capability of varying the running speed due to the load required. I live in Central Virginia about 40 miles southwest of Richmond. We lost power for the first time during Hurricane Michael for four days (90 hours) and it never missed a beat. I was without power for 5 seconds while the transfer switch turned power on from the generator and that was it. A few weeks later the power was out for about 8 hours. Again, after 5 seconds my generator supplied my power needs flawlessly. We had one other 5-minute outage and the system performed the same.

Total outages so far 98 hours and five minutes. Time spent without power for these three outages totaled 15 seconds. As per the claim about lesser fuel costs for LP gas used, I’m not sure what the Guardian Series uses but I was very pleased with my fuel consumption with the Synergy. I had my tank refilled to replace what was used out of curiosity. I deducted the amount of fuel I estimate that I used to cook with and was very happy with what I used during the outages for powering the house. It was about half of what I expected it to cost.

As for the noise factor, I’m very happy. My unit is just outside of my living room wall virtually 8 to 10 feet from where I sit when watching television. The sound is a comfortable level and not an annoyance at all. I cannot hear it when I move to the other side of the house and it transferred the power back to commercial feed without me hearing it turn off once because of the lower sound threshold causing me not to even notice. I am only 5 month into ownership but the 90 hours of use is a good test and I hope it is a good omen on how it will perform in the future. I will definitely give a report if something bad happens moving forward. So far 2 thumbs up on the Synergy.

We installed our generator in 2014 and within a few months purchased the extended 10 year warranty. It has been serviced by a Generac approved technician since installation. In September of this year we had hurricane Florence. The generator ran flawlessly for the six days during the storm and afterwards until power was restored. It tried to start during the normal exercise on the Sunday after the storm and would only run a few seconds and quit. We contacted our service contractor who came and inspected the generator and told us we had severely corroded stator, main controller and electrical harness for these components. He recommended a total replacement since repairs of this nature are sometimes only the beginning and the system might not be reliable. The cost for replacement and installation of just these parts would be about $3,000 and a whole new generator about $6,300.

We hoped our insurance would cover this but unfortunately they do not and is a whole other matter. When I finally called Generac today they said “you are not suppose to operate them when rain can get sucked into the intake as that will corrode the system. They are only meant to provide power when you lose power”. You could have driven a Mack truck into my mouth when it dropped open. I said “you mean to tell me your equipment is not designed to operate in inclimate weather which is typically the ONLY time you lose power and we are to run outside and shut the generator down because it can’t get wet when running?”

Needless to say I was shocked. Not only did I find nothing in my operating manual about this and in fact the manual just says “installed in an all-weather metal enclosure and is intended exclusively for outdoor operations”. I then have been told that I can’t talk to anyone in the warranty department of Generac, only my licensed Generac dealer can. My dealer is fabulous and he has been already told the warranty will not cover this... so what do we do now? I am not going to quietly go away. I want somebody from Generac to call me... I imagined myself Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau as this was happening: Brand new, out of the box. I assembled the frame and followed the directions exactly. The generator ran for 3 minutes before stalling without warning and refusing to restart. I attempted to restart it for about an hour to no avail. Being a pull start, I was exhausted so I decided to call it a night. I tried to turn the fuel cutoff switch to 'off'. While doing so, the switch handle broke off in my hand. I woke up the next day to a puddle of fuel beneath the generator from a leaky fuel line. I replaced a fuel line clamp and attempted to restart the unit. However the lever for the choke was jammed in the 'off' position. After some coaxing I was able to free the choke up, and on only the 36th pull it roared into life.

Once idling, the carburetor began spewing gasoline on the floor. No, no, no, not from the fuel line this time, from the cracked carburetor housing! So, I quickly shut the unit off before it ignited the fuel pool, as fuel was also getting on the exhaust. Because the cutoff valve switch was broken, I had to use vise-grips to clamp the fuel line shut to prevent 5 gallons of fuel ending up on my floor. (Brand... New... Generator.) Generac, to my estimation, is a collection of randomly assembled garbage. The Chinese motor is more than just inferior, it's dangerous. Pot metal is used on critical parts. A new replacement factory carburetor is only $17 which tells you all you need to know. Save yourself the pain, spend some real $ and go buy ANYTHING else.

I bought a Generac generator two months ago. I had a reputable Generac authorized dealer electric company license (Mathers Electric in Tallahassee Florida) and insured to install it. The generator didn't work correctly from day one. I've had nothing but problems with it. It didn't even pass the state home inspection right after it was installed. The same day it was installed, the electricians couldn't even get the Wi-Fi to work. I had to wait 2 weeks for them to come back and they said the reason it didn't work was because of serial numbers on the generator didn't match up with what the actual serial numbers on the generator. The electrician had to call Generac to get the correct serial numbers. We had a hurricane two weeks ago and Generator worked for two days and quit. I got a lemon is what I believe has happened.

When I start it, it will work for a day or so and during that day or so the lights will flicker completely off and then come back on the generator will rev down and then right back up like a power surge. It happens two or three times an hour and then eventually the generator just dies. When I first bought the generator you're supposed to let it run for 25 hours and then have the Electricians come out and change the oil. I did that. The oil was changed 2 weeks prior to the hurricane. The generator people came out and decided that the generators problem was low on oil. It was. In two days of running the generator, it burned a quart and a half of oil. There is no reason why it burn that much. I ran the generator after they "fixed it" and still the lights are flickering on and off and the generator is revving up and down.

I lost everything in the freezer. I have used an extra propane trying to test the generator out and figure out what's wrong with it. Generac does not want to do anything about it because the generator is running even though it isn't running correctly with the lights and power flickering and the generating shutting down after running it a few hours. My advice is, think twice before buying Generac. They are suppose to be a good company but they haven't shown me that they stand behind their warranties. They haven't honored their warranty on my generator.

We lost everything in our freezers and we have went through more propane so their workers can sit there and let it start up and let it run. They don't know what's wrong with it so they can't fix it or diagnose it. DO NOT BUY THIS GENERATOR. I had installed a 20KW whole house generator with a 3-year warranty. In its 4th year it suffered a catastrophic failure of the stator and control module (computer). It cost $1,500 to repair, 1/3 the cost of the unit. I asked the techs if this had an hour meter, which it did, and it showed that, over 4 years, it had run a total of 228 hours-9 1/2 days. To add insult to injury, at that time they were advertising new generators with 10-year warranties. They would not warranty this work. This is junk. If you could give minus stars I would.

He was told by the sales rep Britni Trevino on Sept 13, 23, and 24th that offer would be accepted if activated by Oct 10th. It was and Generac sent me that my extended offer was declined. I purchased a Generac XT8000E 10 months ago and have ran it every week or two for 15 minutes or so. Pulled it out before Hurricane Florence and it was running sluggish and would barely idle. I pulled the spark plug boot off (it was very loose and came off with no effort at all) and found that a piece of the plug had broken off in the boot. Took it to an "authorized" repair center and was notified a week later that Generac would not honor the warranty because they suspected tampering. What a flimsy pretext to just dismiss the issue out of hand. Why in the hell would I tamper with the machine when it has only 10 hours on it? In addition to this, the gas shut-off valve hasn't worked since day one.

I have wasted countless hours complaining to Generac that has led me nowhere. And these ** have the balls to mail out extended warranties every other week when they won't even honor the original warranty. I have since had a magnetic bumper sticker made that reads "DON'T BUY A GENERAC GENERATOR". The generator constantly fails to start up with an “over crank” warning when we need it the most. In bad weather when our safety is in jeopardy. We have to spend hundreds of dollars every year to have it repaired and if even half the complaints on this site are accurate then Generac MUST KNOW THAT THERE ARE INHERENT FAULTS WITH THE DESIGN OF THEIR PRODUCTS THAT HAVE GONE UNADDRESSED FOR YEARS. They obviously don’t care or there would have been a comprehensive re design and the complaints would have stopped. People are not making these complaints for no good reason!!! Three weeks after install Harvey came with high winds and incessant record rainfall. Our brand new hot rod Generac made the storm just fine, glad to say. We shut it down every 24 hours to check oil and resume use. I filled the engine initially with best quality synthetic oil. I changed oil, used the same proper spec weight best synthetic oil made with Generac replacement filters, at 97 hours. At 107 hours (4 1/2 months old) during an exercise run it started rattling and blowing oil from the exhaust. It had a blown engine. Really? Generac would not warrant it because we didn't change the oil after the "break in" period of 25 hours.

I told the truth, we did not change the oil, c'mon, during a full blown record breaking hurricane just jump out there and change the oil... I used the same, best quality, synthetic oil during the change before initial, first time startup. After 2 weeks of "I don't care about your generator" from Generac I finally found someone to help. Took countless calls and time on the phone. I paid $800.00 out of pocket on a 1/2 and 1/2 pay deal. If this Generac goes down I will not repair it I am replacing it with Kohler because Kohler stands behind their product no questions asked. Kohler engines need no valve adjustments. I have a 17kw whole house generator with a defective rotor. The rotor was wound with loose windings which allowed them to protrude past the laminations due to centrifugal force and contact the stator, this caused a catastrophic failure of the rotor and wedged copper wire in the stator. I should also add that this unit is out of warranty and I wasn't asking for a free repair. Just a discount on the repair parts. I called Generac and was told since there were no previous issues reported they could not give me a discount on the defective parts. The generator is 6 years old and runs 15 min a week which is 13 hours per year which equates to 78 hours of exercise time and another 33 hours of run time under load 111 hours. I will also be posting a Youtube video showing this poor workmanship and subsequent poor service.

During Hurricane Harvey, we had 3 ft or so of water in the house and more outside. Our whole house generator flooded. We purchased a new Generac since the old one had worked so good. The purchase and installation was completed in September 2017. This purchase was expensive (flood insurance does not cover anything outside) but gave us “peace of mind”. Here we are, 9 months later and the generator still does not operate. My husband and I took off many work days to get this fixed.

Many parts had to be ordered, some, such as a new regulator with the gas meter had to be paid by us, and the generator is still not working. A month ago we were told by the service center that we need a new ignition coil which is, “surprise!”, on back order. We have spent many days trying to resolve this with Generac and with our installer. When something does not work, especially after spending $8K, they should replace it with a new one. Generac needs to stand behind their product and in their own advertising words: “do more” and “have peace of mind”. I guess our next step will need to be legal.

Was looking for a American made reputable company to purchase outdoor power equipment from and chose Generac. What a mistake, purchased a new pressure washer and 2 inch water pump only to have the water pump fail in less than 60 days. This was not the bad part anything can break, no big deal until you learn that the company that made it will not stand behind it and you are on your own. Called Generac and was told I would have to pay 87.00 for a new pump housing that cracked. This ST20 pump had a one year warranty or so I thought. Generac will not send you a warranty part you will have to load it up and haul it to a service center for repairs.

I emailed Generac customer service to give them a fair chance to credit me for the warranty part and right this wrong. Instead of giving me my money back for the part under warranty they have stonewalled and doubled down on terrible customer service and ignore the problem. Will never do business with Generac again. Both of my new Generac items a new pressure washer and water pump 900.00 dollars are going to the trash dump. Lesson learned the hard way.

Updated on 08/02/2018: Generac gave a really good response saying this is not the way we do business when my 400 dollar ST20 2 inch water pump failed under warranty and they refused to send a replacement part for it at no charge. Well you will never get them to send you a warranty part without payment. You will still have to load it up and haul it to one of their service centers to have the service center get the part and install it even if it only takes 5 min to install a pump housing. Now I'm reading the service centers don't want to do work for Generac because they don't get paid. Instead of refunding my money for the warranty part Generac has doubled down on their policy of not letting the owner fix the item labor free.

They have stonewalled wussy footed and beat around the bush until I give up. THIS IS the way they do business and they will not send you any warranty part for you the owner to install yourself even if you send them the bad part back first. I refuse to spend 100 bucks hauling their junk around to get it fixed. If I had known this is how they handle warranty parts I would have never bought anything from Generac. Harbor Freight has a much better parts warranty than this and their pump was 240 bucks cheaper.

We have found for our GENERATOR you can use FRAM TG4386 ‘oil filter’ and not having to buy GENERAC brand. If ever we will need our generator running ‘long term’, having plenty of oil, air & oil filters, spark plugs, couple fuses on hand is essential. I paid “South Shore Generator Service” to perform a “Major PM Service” on my Generac 20kW home standby generator. The technician that did the work. Told me the generator looked good, didn’t need any additional work and only had 53 hrs of run time on the unit. The technician also told me that he left me a quart container of extra oil inside the generator’s bottom in-closer if I ever needed it.

The following morning, I went out to the generator to remove the quart oil container the technician had left me. I didn’t want the oil container bouncing around inside the generator in-closer if I were to lose power and the generator were to start running. When I opened the generator’s in closer top cover to remove the oil container, I noticed around a half quart of oil all over the generator’s bottom interior base. I looked at the quart oil container the technician had left me and noticed it was about half empty. I assumed that oil must have leaked out of the quart oil container or that the technician had spilled oil when he removed the old engine oil filter while installing the new engine oil filter. I did not call South Shore Generator Service back right away, Instead I removed the partially filled quart oil container and cleaned up the oil mess than closed up and locked the generators in-closer.

A few months later my home lost power, this was the first time my home experienced a power lose since I had the generator serviced by South Shore Generator Service. The following afternoon, I went out to check the oil level on my generator, because the generator had been running due to the power outage. When I opened the generators in-closer top cover I noticed about a half quart of oil all over the generator’s bottom interior base plate and oil sprayed all over the engine. I couldn’t locate where the oil leak was coming from.

I cleaned up the oil mess, checked the engine oil level to find that it was down a half quart and went inside and called South Shore Generator Service to tell them about the oil leak. I speak to the service department lead person, and explained the oil leak problem to him and he said that model generator had a sensor that if it were to run out of oil, it would shut down and not cause any major engine damage. He also told me that he would send out a new technician to look into the cause of the oil leak problem.

The technician arrived in two days, to see if he could locate the cause of the oil leak. After about 45 minutes he knocked on my door and told me that he thought the oil leak was a damaged front crank shaft seal, causing the oil leak and that he would report his findings to his boss and that his boss would give me a call back in a couple days. I never received a call back, so after a week I called the company back. I spoke with a woman who answered the company phone and I ask to speak with the service department supervisor, she told me he was busy and would call me back in a few hours. I never received a call back.

A week later I received an email from South Shore Generator Service with a PDF repair quote attached. The quote was to remove and replace the front crankshaft seal with an estimated total of $1,224.71. The quote was for a $9.00 part, $190.00 travel time and the remaining cost was all labor. This was the last time that I communication with South Shore Generator Service.

Next I called the generators manufacture “Generac” and spoke with a girl from Generac customer support. I explained to her everything that had happened with South Shore Generator Service. She told me that she would try to call South Shore Generator Service and would call me be back within an hour or two. In about one and half hours she called me back. She told me see recorded my complaint and had spoken to the South Shore Generator, but she did not mention to me the outcome of the phone conversion. She went on to say that South Shore Generator Service was only listed to sell Generac products and was NOT certified to repair their products. She then want on to say that I would need to pay a certified Generac service company to look at my generator problem to see if they could find fault with South Shore Generators workmanship and she gave me two service companies listed with Generac.

I contacted one of the company’s off her list and they are schedule to come out and look at my generator’s oil leak problem. It will be interesting to see how well Generac backs their products, as my generator is still under Generac’s 5-year warranty. Meanwhile to my dismay I received a bill in the mail from South Shore Generator Service for the amount of $238.39 for the cost of the second technician they sent out to try and find out where and what caused the generator oil leak. It was my understanding with the company that they were sending out the second technician as courtesy check to see if the first technician caused the oil leak problem.

I purchased my Generac 8kw generator at Lowe's and it was installed on March 26, 2013. It was installed and regularly serviced by a Generac authorized electrician. It ran during a 3.5 day power outage with no problem in early March 2018 (just shy of 5 years old). The following week it did not start when the power went out again. I had it diagnosed twice by my electrician, one time he did the troubleshooting over the phone with Generac technical support. The verdict: over crank error. Engine is dead. It either must be replaced or I need a whole new unit. It had only run 4 other times during short outages. I have repeatedly asked my electrician and the customer support team at Generac for a specific reason the engine died. No one has given me an answer. Generac said that the reason is because the generator was not shut down every 24 hours during operation for the oil to be checked.

I was referred to page 29 of the user manual. However, the oil level was fine with all others parts in check and there was no lack of care. At no point during my purchase negotiation, installation, scheduled maintenance visits or inquiries to Generac did anyone state that the unit has to be shut down every 24 hours during extended operation. And on Generac's website they state that the generators can run continuously without monitoring. This is misleading advertising with the purpose of selling units. If in fact if the engine is that fragile that it will completely die for this reason then warning statements in giant red letters should be plastered all over the instructions and the unit. This is a big lie. The product is an expensive piece of junk. Don't buy it!!

We've worked out an amicable resolution and I am satisfied with their response.

    Original Review: April 4, 2018

My automatic standby Generac generator was installed in October 2009. At that time I purchased a 10 year service contract that remains in effect through 2019. I've done everything I could to protect this 5 figure investment in Generac products. Soon after the short three year warranty Generac provides on the equipment expired the generator service tech performing the annual maintenance on the generator advised me to contact Generac about the severe corrosion beginning to occur on the base of the generator. He said he'd seen this before and Generac may assist in repairing the corrosion by replacing the base and corroded components.

I then contacted Generac customer service, explained the situation, provided photos, and was basically told "it's not our problem". The corrosion has continued to worsen, and frankly I'd not be surprised if the base didn't rot all the way through and leave the engine and components on the ground at some point in the near future. I've again contacted Generac and been told (again) it's not their problem. In doing research on the issue it seems Consumer Reports and others rate Kohler generators much better than Generac, and Kohler generators can be fitted with composite non-corroding enclosures. Very disappointed in the customer service from Generac, and their failure to support their product and customer.

The unit is call portable but need two strong people and a truck to move it. The cost to take the unit to a "dealer" is too much. Anybody with mild mechanic experience can fix it but they do not let you get the parts.

Will NOT be suggesting Generac generators to friends and online! After only 106 hours of light use... the dreaded and well-documented bad rotor issue has hit me. My generator was running for 23 hours during this last Massachusetts Northeastern storm. After 23 hours, the generator died. Turns out it is a bad rotor! Seriously this 14KW generator has only 106 hours on it. Garbage! It will take over a two weeks to fix this just to get the part which is about 450 dollars. JUST FOR THE PART!

Generac support said that they will do NOTHING for this problem. Looking on the internet this is a well-known issue. If it were happening in a car there would be a RECALL! Seriously I will need to pay over 1000 dollars to repair this and not even have it in time for the next storm coming this week! GENERAC NEVER AGAIN. Will be looking elsewhere for my generator needs. I wanted a standby generator system for my house. I got online with Generac. I was contacted by the local place, (I guess), KA Generator PO box **, Edgewood, NM 87015 - Alan, of KA and I talked and he determined what I needed and the price. I decided to go ahead with the purchase. He told me a specific price for the generator, and the installation. There was much contact back and forth, until I had a "final" price. The Generator came in, unexpectedly one day and I had to make special arrangements to store it at my house. Now I needed installation.

The contractor, Interstate Electric, contacted me about doing a site survey. We set up a time, and they were at least 45 minutes late. (No contact in regards) After the survey, Alan of Interstate told me he had what he needed and quoted a price. I waited 10 days until they could get me on their schedule. When that time was up, they needed to look at my site again. I set it up and waited, and waited. The following day they final came out. At this time Randy said he could not place the generator where he said he was going to put it because it was too close to my house and my neighbor's house. Now he said he needed to place it further away in my back yard, and it was going to cost me $1400.00 extra! I told him I was not pleased and I questioned whether he was new to this or what? I told him I was not going to pay that, and I was going to consider cancelling the entire job. I soon found that I was stuck with the generator, and no installation.

About 10 days later Randy contacted me about doing the job. I told him I was not going to pay $1400.00 extra. We went around and around, and finally he offered to pay half for his mistake, and BS. I told him I would think about it. I waited a few days, then because I felt trapped, I agreed. The installation happened, off and on over the next few weeks. I could never count on them to be at my house when they said they would. It was hit or miss! Finally the system was installed, and I paid Randy, and just wanted him off my property! I got very little new owner instructions. I have read the manuals, but know next to nothing about my system.

Hey Generac, is this the kind of representation you want for your product?? I have since told as many neighbors and friends to not get trapped into the product the way I did. I WILL NOT recommend this product to ANYONE!! The only receipt I received was a typed out list and price from KA Generator, and an emailed one from Randy

We purchased a new 22kW Generac standby generator in June '17. Upon initial installation the unit would not start up properly and the installer couldn't figure out why. When I called Generac they required me to have a service tech come out from a “servicing dealer” and told me my dealer was only a “selling dealer”. Since they gave me the selling dealer info to begin with I had no idea there was any difference. I won't bore you with the fact it took over 3 months to get a quote to begin with when we decided on getting a generator. When a service dealer arrived he determined the circuit board was defective and he would need to report it to Generac and have them send a replacement part. It was finally replaced about 3 weeks after original install and appeared to work properly. Little did we know what the future would hold.

Every week for approx 6 months the generator would do its weekly test. Then in early January it started up, ran for 3 seconds or so, and then stopped. I went outside shortly afterward and saw that the red light was on, indicating a serious issue. Back to calling a servicing dealer, who couldn't come out for nearly a week. When they came out they found numerous issues and parts that needed replaced. To make matters worse we were shown proof that the circuit board that was originally replaced was replaced with a refurbished part! A refurbished part on a brand new unit!!

Servicing dealers have no authority to replace anything without Generac approval so they sent pictures, notes and recommendations for review. After another few weeks they came out again with numerous parts... Yet the unit still wouldn't start properly. The technician said he told Generac it also needed the same circuit board be replace but Generac had not provided it. Now a request would need to be made for a new board. I spoke with Generac and demanded a completely new unit since this unit has not worked properly from the beginning. They told me it's their option to replace parts or the unit and they wouldn't replace unit. Generac is complete crap in our opinion. The tech will be out soon to try new part again but my wife and have little faith this $9,000 investment will work properly when needed. We feel 100% ripped off and warn anyone to buy a Generac to run in other direction.

I have only 140 hours run time and have invested so much in repairs, for what I spent I could have allowed my basement to flood and move into a hotel during an outage. Constant conflict with opinions of what is wrong, valve lash goes out of adjustment constantly. Every tech that comes out has a different opinion, all of which are expensive and conflicting each other... Now suddenly I am being told I need a "cold weather kit" yet last year I had a tech come out and blame my battery warmer for constant battery issues, he removed it and said it was not necessary... Now it is? Along with an oil warmer... Maybe I should build a heated shed around it to keep it comfy during the winter??? Not worth the money I spent, not a durable product, not meant for outdoor use in winter.

I had to laugh right at the tech a few weeks ago when he decided to criticize the gas pipe that it's hooked up to... Despite the fact that it is in spec and has been there for 8+ years already without problems, suddenly it seems to be a problem?? Sounds more like they ran out of ideas so let's criticize the owner of it instead? Sad. Just don't buy a Generac, find some other brand.

I purchased the 20kw GENERAC generator in 10/2016 installed 12/2016, due to HOA requirements. Purchased for two main reasons, senior parent with medical needs and two active sump pumps. On 1/1/2018 at 2:30a the owner went out. The very first time that we had a failure this machine FAILED. Fortunately, my parent was visiting with friends and family for the holiday.

I was awake when the outage occurred. I waited the few minutes for the machine to come on. I heard this very loud grinding sound and after 5 minutes nothing happened and the grinding sound had stopped. I realized that there wasn’t a direct or clear point of contact for emergency service. I didn’t know who to call. I hesitated but tried the installers’ number and left a message after being in the dark for about 20-25 minutes. I am thinking it was good that my parent wasn’t home because this would have been a medical emergency. I tried Generac 24/7 Line. This was frustrating because the service line number was not clear nor direct to a service person. No one at the time of emergency wants to go through a series of “Push some number “ to get another “Push another number” for the next instructions. That was very frustrating. No one answered. I hung up. I was flustered because I didn’t know what to do.

The power was restored a couple of hours later. I tried the Generac 24/7 number and this time someone answered the phone. I explained all that happened. I was offered a service tech in my area. It was the same tech who originally installed the unit and he hadn’t yet returned either of my earlier phone calls. The Generac company only support was to basically tell how sorry they were. And I should seek the service from the tech. I refused because I just couldn’t understand a machine at that age by installment date this machine was brand new and it FAILED.

The tech told me beforehand looking at the machine told me that I needed an oil change and the machine would be good. My gut tells me there is more wrong. I am still paying for this machine and it is NOT working. I asked for a new machine or remove and reimburse. The installing tech showed up on Jan 2nd two hours late. He claimed that I needed new oil. The machine only had somewhere close to 4-5 hours of running time. The only running time that we know of is the Five minutes per week of self-checking. I cannot accept this excuse. The grinding was loud and horrible sounding! I know that there had to be internal damage.

I WANT THIS DAMN MACHINE EITHER REMOVED AND REIMBURSED OR A NEW ONE INSTALLED! I am paying a third party credit card company for payments, so I am stuck on this. I don’t trust oil being the problem. And I cannot afford to “wait for the next time the power to go out again as the Generac tech explained.” BULL! I can’t take the risk. Generac was not helpful. They have a serious game going on. I heard “I am sorry” in every way.

THIS MACHINE IS NOT RELIABLE AND THERE IS FAR TOO MANY PEOPLE WITH COMPLAINTS. I gave GENERAC a chance to help, but all I got from the customer service rep was I’m sorry in every way possible. The installing tech doesn’t want to swap out this machine because as he said “he can’t afford to swallow the expense” so in his arrogance I guess it’s okay for me to take on the expense of purchasing an inoperable generator. I warned that I would go public because I was getting the runaround from Generac and the install tech. I too have a large yard ornament with a bright red light. Totally dissatisfied customer.

Updated on 03/04/2018: Just Keeping It Real with Generac Complaints and Reviews. I received a notification that there was a response to my www.ConsumersAffairs.com Review website. I went to the site and I found out that this review business identified my comments as "Resolution in Progress". Well, that was DEFINITELY NOT true at all.

I read the response on or around Feb 21. I was pretty much shocked by the ConsumerAffairs.com review response. I immediately began preparing my response on my tablet and but found it too difficult to type on a small keyboard. I needed to prepare a proper response. Before, I could finish my original response, I saw on the local news the same evening that companies like GENERAC pay review websites to respond to consumers who make complaints. The responsibility of these review sites is to make the company that they are representing, to look positive and responsive to the consumer complaint. I was shocked. So, there is a strong possibility that this site is a FAKE? The local news identified these consumer sites as a SCAM.

I thought everyone should see how I was being "assisted" by the ConsumerAffairs.com. I was surprised to see that their response was not included on the website for all to see, so I included it to let other unhappy consumers see what assistance is being provided that would result in a conclusion that a "Resolution is in Progress".

Company response: 2/12/18. "I am sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with your product, however you described having an independent technician out, who according to your statement below has not found any defects with the unit. I would recommend reaching out for a second opinion if you are not trusting the first review. While Generac does manufacture the product, we clearly outline in the owner's manual that the independent dealerships in your area are your service providers."

TO DATE, I WANT THE OTHERS WHO'S COMPLAINED TO NOTE THAT NO ONE RESPONDED TO MY REQUEST AND TODAYS' DATE IS MARCH 3, 2018. I am a verified purchaser, with a very real problem. The complaint/negative review that I shared on this website on Feb. 2, 2018, now has a statement which infers that GENERAC is working a resolve. Well the individual that responded to me never followed up with a response. It boils down my having to put more money into a generator that I haven't finished paying for and is not working. I still have the RED light on my generator since DEC 31, 2017-JAN 1, 2018.

I would highly recommend not buying a Generac home standby generator. I bought the 22KW version from Home Depot July 2017. After getting hit by two hurricanes in Puerto Rico, the thing died. Repeated calls to Generac got nowhere, the only response was, "call the authorized dealer". Of which there are very few of in PR, and impossible to get through to after two storms. If I get it fixed myself, it voids the warranty.

So after spending over $10k including installation, I am left with a useless machine in my backyard. At a time when looters and thieves are running wild with no police presence what-so-ever. Power was a matter of security, not just convenience. After calling and waiting in lines for over a month, I finally gave up and hired my own repair guy. 1.5 months and $1500 in repairs later, it's finally working again.

For three weeks. Until my transfer switch fried. Again with the same response from Generac... “it's your problem not ours.” AND again I've been waiting a month trying to get someone "authorized" to fix it. Still no luck and zero help from Generac other than to give me the same list of 5 dealers that supposedly will fix it. So in summary, a Generac generator is a nice decoration for your backyard, but don't ever actually try to use it in an emergency situation. So many of their generators will fail in your area, the authorized repair technicians will be swamped with work for months, that by the time it will be fixed you will no longer need it. But maybe that's by design... really reduces your warranty costs!!!

In 2011, we purchased a 14k Generac whole house generator. Installation took 6 months on cinder blocks before the installer came back and he refused to comply with the town required codes. He even installed it without pulling the permits... I found out later after a visit from a town official. The installer had to pull them AFTER the fact. I had to pay several hundred dollars to later have it reinstalled, move gas line, inspections... Why did I bother. The darned thing blew its circuit board during the first winter storm (Massachusetts). Generac replaced it but the whole unit never really worked right. 15 minute self-checks went off pretty well but if the generator had to run for a couple of hours or more...it would cut out. Not good in a blizzard. Yes. I did keep the maintenance up with Generac recommended dealers (tried several) and shovel away the snow from the vents. It NEVER made it through a storm.

We decided to move in 2017 and I had a total analysis and tune-up of the Generac done by another company (at considerable expense) and the generator subsequently worked. I was going to trash it because I would not let the new owners buy a home with a piece of crap Generac. We had several months of working service finally and then I felt comfortable selling it with the home instead of dumping the whole damn unit. I spoke to Generac time and time again when the generator shut down but because the display window did not show an "error message", Generac told me that there was nothing wrong. SERIOUSLY!

Customer service was simply AWFUL. We're in our new home now and looking for another generator. Most likely, it won't be a Generac. Ours was absolute GARBAGE! I haven't decided on a brand yet, but Kohler is a distinct possibility. All I want is a reliable machine. I am 67, my wife is 66 and needs a breathing machine at night. I have a kidney transplant and we need to be prepared if it fails and home dialysis becomes an issue. I surely can't rely on Generac to take care of us "power wise" in an emergency.

I am approaching the $14,000 price level on this 22k generator purchased thru Neptune Home Depot and NRG supplier. Shortly after taking my $13,000 NRG closed its doors and I never heard from them again. They "installed" the generator on a slab after ripping up a drainage pipe and leaving the holes. Eventually they came and threw dirt over the still unconnected drainage pipe. They never set up the generator to run properly.

A year later I complained and was connected to a new group to set up a $400 maintenance program. After 1 and 1/2 years I find that while it powers the fridge, possibly a well pump, and a heat pump, that the house is still in total darkness during an outage... no lights. I am still awaiting a generator reconfiguration and I'll change this review if someone, anyone, can get this generator to power the house lights during an outage. To date, it has been a very, very, bad purchase. More later.

I would never recommend Generac generator. We've had ours about 4 years and have only been able to use it once for just 4 hours - not that we didn't need it more than that, but it was always broken!!! Twice the control panel went bad, we had to replace the battery and the one time we were able to use it, my husband had to turn it on manually and then go out in the middle of the night and turn it off manually. We spent over $1,000 having the control panel replaced again about a month ago, and the repairman said Generac will only guarantee the part for 3 months!!!

Whole house generator - I just want to express my total disappointment in the fact that nothing is being offered or done to help with getting things taken care of. I basically have a box on the side of my house that can’t do anything. I have a portable that is much older and that was taken care of by the manufacturer as a service to me. They split the difference in cost on repairs. What bothers me the most is the fact that everything was done to ensure that the generator was ready to do its job and when actually needed it totally failed miserably. I am a plumbing salesperson and none of the manufacturers I deal with would ever just disregard a customer especially a loyal one.

I can safely say that Generac will never get my business and I will make sure if ever asked to let people know how it performed or should I say not performed for me and my family. Having a special needs child is why we have this thing and it was just a waste of money. All the service and maintenance I paid for and the generator itself. These things just aren’t supposed to happen to a quality product. We picked your company because it was supposed to be reliable and a good product but not so much. Extremely disappointed.

I noticed black cloth like material coming out of the area on the shelf between the engine/generator and the fuel tank. I called Generac the first rep told me it was no problem it was for sunshine. The second rep told me he could not find the part number as it was made by Briggs and Stratton. I looked in the IPC that came with the unit and gave them the P/N (**). Then by magic they told me this was not really needed to operate the generator. I believe this to be either lack of training or lazy. In either case I called again spoke with a parts person told me this cloth was $41.00. I think this should be considered warranty.

We have paid for 3 costly repairs on the system and when IRMA hit it lasted 4 days of our 6-day outage, temps were > 90 daily with 'feels like' temp of >100. Dealer said 'roster stater' 6-8 weeks repair. When we called back they said they really felt bad for all the Generac failures in Ocala, FL, but nothing they could do.

Called Generac, rep, said obviously the generator was not meant to run for 4 days straight, that it needed to be turned off for some (unspecified) time every 24 hrs. I asked where in owner manual it explained that, "I don't need a manual to tell me that, it's common sense." I asked what about advertised "24/7 security" and "never feel powerless again". The electrician, who is licensed to do so, was here at our house making the final connections AFTER the generator was delivered. AFTER all the connections outside were made, we came into the house and UNPLUGGED all the electric outlets. We went back outside started the generator. Plugged in the 50 amp plug and moved the transfer switch lever so the electric was coming from the generator. So there was no problem with the breaker switch at that time. We went back into the house and the only appliance drawing electricity was a ceiling fan that operates on a remote control.

The fan did not operate BUT the light was flashing on and off very fast. The only appliance. He went back outside and moved the transfer switch to the OFF. He then UNPLUGGED the 50 amp 120-V / 240-V plug. He checked the generator output with his Volt/Amp meter. The generator's output on the low side was 112-V. The high side was only 229-V. He said the generator was out of calibration and should not be used. I got him on the phone with Gonzalez Trading. I don't know who he talked with. He talked for what seemed like a long time.

This was all in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish. When I was BACK on the phone with Gonzalez Trading, I was told they wanted to send a service man the DAY AFTER TOMORROW. I purchased a Generac 22kw Guardian natural gas unit with their automatic transfer switch (installed by the Generac dealer) around 2 years ago. The output is enough to power everything in the house. 2 weeks ago we were hit with tropical storm Harvey. Our neighborhood and town lost power for 2 weeks. The generator started, transferred and ran perfectly without any problem for the entire time around the clock, the only thing I did was to shut it off every 24 hours for 20 minutes to cool down and to check the oil, after pushed the start button we had power again. Many, many homes were flooded, total town was without power.

Thank God my house did not flood and I was able to offer several families and their children over the course of the storm a dry safe place with power to hold up, wash clothes, get a good home cooked meal (electric stove) and forget about the storm for a while. Eventually utility power was restored and the generator transferred back to utility waiting for the next outage. I purchased a Generac 14KW Guardian generator in 2014 which did not have the capability to switch the service run cycle from every week to every other week, an option the newer models have, and saves both propane and wear & tear on the generator. The option would be available with a firmware update for the generator's computer. When I called Generac's Customer Service about it, I was told my generator was not setup to go to the 2 week option.

I asked if there was a firmware update coming that would allow that option. They didn't have an answer. I asked to talk to a Supervisor and was told that none were available. I asked to speak to technical support, and was told that Customer Service was the only one I could talk to. Twice, I was also told that they had millions of customers and the couldn't make a change for just one customer: Even though the firmware update would have benefited many generators (the same results on multiple phone calls).

I then called Generac Corporate headquarters, in an effort to tell Management how I was being stonewalled and to see if I could get an answer on whether a firmware update was in the works. I dialed several extensions, off the cuff, and was finally able to connect to an operator (no option to connect to an operator when initially calling corporate HQ). She would not connect me with anyone in the management chain of command. Told me she was connecting me with the Customer Service Supervisor; instead I was put in the queue to talk to another Customer Service Rep.

I just happened to LUCK OUT, when he answered, after my initial disgust, he told me, he would take my information and have the supervisor call me back. After I told him what I wanted, he admitted he was a Tech, filling in for a Customer Service Rep. He then informed me that the firmware updates for my generator were already available, gave me the firmware update numbers and told me where to get them. If that is how Generac Corporate Management wants to treat customers, shame on them. Customer Service acts like a wall when any question beyond their immediate knowledge bank is asked. Management has the company set up where Customer Service is your first and last option, and Management has isolated themselves so the customer can not make them aware of a customer relationship problem. It took me a year and one half to get the information I needed, even after working with my local Generac Dealer.

The problem is Generac's warranty service and their inability to provide replacement parts in a timely fashion. It has been 7 weeks now, and I am still waiting for Generac to supply the warrantied replacement parts for this most recent breakdown.

Six months ago, I got so tired waiting for them to replace a warrantied part (after 4 weeks) that I purchased the part from a commercial vendor and had it in two days. The best part of that fiasco was Generac's refusal to reimburse me for the cost of the part. I was told by their warranty department that I had to receive any part through them in order to satisfy my extended warranty contract's "fine print"! Buyer beware. It worked great and it was able to supply the power that we needed quite sufficiently throughout the entire power outage. We have had no trouble starting it since we purchased it. Though it should have a lighted function board, and that the choke should be easier to access. The on off switch was also getting a good bit of condensation around it when the sun went down. I purchased this brand after reading reviews and checking out other generator. It runs pretty quiet. Had power outage and had electrician hook up to the refrigerator and garage door. It's not the largest but it can handle every necessary need when there is an outage. The oil change and maintenance is easy to do and straightforward. The instructions are written clearly with diagrams. But I had an issue with it not starting and during the test it showed stopped alarm overcrank notice. The installer found that the unit shipped without the filter and that was easily fixed. Overall this was the best price for the quality I needed without breaking the bank. It's good to go into the store and check out the product before the purchase and look up all your options.

Aspen Leaf could not provide me details on "the fuel issue" or the reason that it caused the failure. We have lived here now 5 years, and besides the weekly 15 minute test run, it's only turned on once with a live power failure. I service the unit myself, replace the battery once, oil changes with M1, and even put on a cold start kit, not cheap.

Last week I notice the red light on, indicating low oil. Yeah, it's at the bottom line, something to do with a crankcase that now has a hole in it, due to a piston rod failure. Oil sprayed out of the hole during its death throes. This is the 990cc Generac sourced motor with propane power. It's a catastrophic loss. A large, heavy piece of junk. We bought what we thought was this smaller sized generator to have just in case, however after a bad patch of weather lasting about 4 days we really had to use it a lot, it worked perfectly. It was great on gas, powered all the sources that we needed, ran continuously, wasn't loud or off putting, and for the price we paid, we were elated. But it could have probably used some bigger wheels, although we didn't need to move it off of our driveway, it seems that it would have some trouble moving over rough terrain. Nowhere in this manual is a list of parts!

I did an online request for a parts diagram and it was just a 2 page affair with drawings and part numbers for the power head. There is a line that would connect to the fuel regulator on another drawing for the control system. This time we bought a Premo unit, housed it in an environmentally controlled area, and still had a catastrophic engine failure after 300 running hours. Generac was no help as in the previous failings. In this case, the low oil shutdown failed to terminate operations after the oil filter vibrated loose and hemorrhaged oil. Generac's answer was that the shutdown function did operate because there was oil in the crankcase, just none reaching the cylinder. They offered to pay for the connecting rod ($20) provided I pay the 6 hours ($600) labor at a certified Generac repair facility. 3rd time is the charm, I will never own a Generac again.

I built a house in Montana in 2001 and installed a Generac 15kw propane generator. The generator has worked great mechanically but a 10 cent part break has cost me hours of headaches. One of the two fuse holders broke. Not the part in the generator but the cap that held the fuse. One of the small metal clips broke not allowing the fuse to be held in place. No problem, call general and get an overpriced replacement. Took hours to get through to customer service so decided to research it on the web. Found the part by referencing the part number in the owner's manual. Ordered the part and when it arrived it did not fit. It turned out that Generac changed the part but kept the same part number.

They, as well as any other supply house, did not carry the old part. It had literally disappeared off the face of the planet. Since I need the generator work I bought a couple of the new parts @ $8 each plus postage and then needed to find someone who could take apart the generator cover and replace the fuse holders. I called Generac and they advised that the closest approved person that they had to do this was in Seattle, WA and my house was in Western Montana, 450 miles away. Home Depot, where I bought the generator, was also of no help. I finally got it fixed at the cost of time and money, much more so than it should have. Again, the generator is great and runs great and have had no problems except as noted. Customer service was terrible.

I am truly shocked to read all the negative reviews about the problems that folks have had with their Generac generators. We purchased an 8k stand-by generator in October of 2009 because of the terrible ice storm we had in Schenectady, NY in December of 2008. We were without power for 4 nights, and had to finally move to a hotel for 2 nights, since the house temp got down to 34 degrees. We researched generators after that, and had three different authorized electricians come out to give us an estimate. We chose the one who seemed the most detail-oriented, and they were licensed electricians as well. The generator did get zapped by lightning while running during a power outage once, but the control panel was quickly replaced under warranty without any issue by our electrician. Then there was a loosened and disconnected exhaust hose that would not allow the generator to start.

Again the electrician came out and quickly found the problem and it was a 5 minute fix. The generator does its weekly test, and we failthfully have the generator serviced by the electrician as required. Oil is changed on schedule, and the unit tuned up. They replaced the battery after 5 years, even though it was still working, just to make sure it didn't fail when needed. We have had various power outages over the 7 years that we've had it, and it is such a comfort to have this generator. Furnace runs, refrigerator runs, and the designated lights and outlets work. Most homes in our large development have Generac stand-by generators. We have not heard any complaints from the neighbors. Sure hope we haven't jinxed ourselves by writing this positive review. Our advice is to make sure to use a licensed electrician to install and service the generator - an electrician trained to install and service Generac stand-by generators.

I purchased this Diesel 20KW Home Protector Generator RD020 in Nov 2014 and had nothing but problems. The Controller went out 5 or 6 times over an 18 month period and it took Generac 2 weeks to 3 months to repair each time. What good is it to have a backup if it keeps going out and it takes 2 weeks to 3 months to repair! After complaining to The Better Business BBB in Wisconsin, and after approximately 18 months, The Resolution Specialist (Who lacked any Customer Service) informed me that Generac would swap out the Generator with a brand new one and the option (Which is what I wanted) to refund my money and pick up the generator was not an option. The swap took place 29 Aug 2016 (Almost 5 months) and as of present, there have been no problems, Knock on wood.

1 Major reason I wanted to get a full refund and for Generac to remove this stress machine from my property is the fact that if anything goes wrong, they drag their feet to send the authorized dealer a part and the time it takes to repair which defeats the purpose in owning their product as by the time it is repaired, the crisis is over. 2 Weeks to 2 months to repair a product such as this is unacceptable and what is even more unacceptable is their resolution specialist who has no customer service skills whatsoever. I do not recommend anyone buying this product simply because of the length of time it took to repair it and the derogatory poor customer service of the resolution specialist.

Oh, also, The CIO is not accessible, nor anyone else at the executive level which sends a message to me that Generac does not care about listening to customers with legitimate complaints, especially after they have sold their defective products to them. Except for a burned-out starter (when it tried to start in -20F weather with a weak battery), the unit has worked flawlessly. We live in the country and have 3 or 4 power outages per year of a couple hours or more duration (the longest was 36 hours) -- 5 stars for the generator's functionality and reliability. The motor finally gave out after 15 years with no maintenance other than keeping the oil topped up, and we contacted the local Generac service guys (Ambrose Electric) and they were terrific - always available and always responsive. We elected to replace the unit's motor (rather than the entire unit) and then our troubles began. It took five weeks for a new motor to arrive after the order was placed.

The Ambrose guys were out to install it within a few days and, when the new motor was installed, it blew up (it actually blew a hole in the cylinder head when it was started). What bad luck, but a replacement engine was ordered and expedited -- it also arrived five weeks after order! The Ambrose guys were at our house a couple of days later to install it and - you guessed it - the second replacement generator started, ran for a minute or so, and blew up (another hole in the motor)! It's been almost three months since the initial failure, and still no working generator. So, give 0 stars for Factory Service. We're now on a track to get a complete new unit with a complete 10-year warranty (parts and service). We recently had a brand new whole house natural gas 22,550 KW Generac generator professionally installed by Reliable Power Systems in Boca Raton, Fl. It was tested weekly but not needed until now, when Hurricane Mathew hit and we lost power in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. It went on but ran erratically, causing the power to boom off and on while running. It was so disruptive that we shut off the lights and TV and went to sleep around 2 AM. At 5:30 AM, what we thought was the fire alarm, woke us up out of a deep sleep. Thank God it did and the Fire Dept. showed up quickly. Turns out it was the CO detector alarm and the FD CO reading was at a dangerous level. We weren't allowed back in for over an hour till large commercial fans were used with every open window and door to get rid of the deadly levels. They also tested the unit outside that had an even higher reading.

The next day Reliable came out and found a faulty air filter and fuel mixer causing it to burn rich, running it in overdrive. If not for that alarm, we'd be DEAD. They want to just replace the faulty parts and be done with it, saying it passed inspection. UH-UH! No deal, we are suing, especially after reading all the many complaints about a grossly negligent company. Anyone wanting to partake in a class action suit can contact us at **. We spent $14,000 with permits and installation and this happened with the first use. This is totally unacceptable. We bought this for peace of mind but we will never trust this unit again.

48 kva generator - Just went through hurricane Mathew in Jacksonville, Fl. Finally the generator gets it test of all tests. Days, maybe weeks without city power. Friday morning the storm begins and boom a tree takes out the power lines and just as advertised the general roars to life. Three days later, generator overheats and auto shutdown. Technician arrives within an hour and half late Monday evening to find a tension spring for the fan belt has broken. Of course the technician has no approved general springs but does rig three automotive pedal return springs to get me through the night hopefully until the real general spring is installed. My point is 10's of thousands of $$$ spent for this very scenario and it general hinges it all on a 5$ spring? I am truly suspect of the engineering and commitment on Generac to high quality and superior generators.

We purchased a Generac portable generator and had an electrician here to install the correct connections for the unit. As required we ran it monthly the first couple of years as directed, although we never had the need to use it for a power outage. When it stopped running we contacted Generac and were given the nearest authorized repair company. We are in a rural area in Duchess County NY, so the cost to have the authorized repair company come pick up the generator was almost as much as our local repair would charge us. And as there was no guarantee Generac would help, we opted to pay to have it fixed, and mailed Generac the information they required, to see if they would offer any money towards the repair. After numerous phone calls and not one return call from Generac, or not one follow through from Generac on anything they promised, we chalked it up.

Again we ran the generator monthly for another 8 or 9 months until while running it made a large bang and stopped once again. It is now sitting in the local repair place needing another $400 to be repaired. This unit has a little over 1 hour run time on it. It has never been used for an outage and basically it is a piece of junk. After calling Generac approximately another dozen times and dealing with people at what we think might be a few levels, we have still never had a return call - even to tell us there is nothing they can or will do. Not a call! The lack of concern, follow through or common courtesy is appalling.

We will junk this unit and never, ever consider purchasing anything from Generac as well as trying to use our consumer influence to warn others about this company. Products can be lemons - as ours must have be, but it is the lack of any customer concern that is by far the worst part. Stay away from Generac - save yourself aggravation!

We purchased a Generac GP17500 portable generator from NorthernTool.com the end of May and put it into service on June 1st for our summer-only business. It ran for 20 minutes on the first day of our new business and then immediately quit completely. Generac told us to contact an electrician, which we did and paid for at our own expense. He informed us that the switch was bad. It was then sent to Generac's "authorized service center". The authorized service center has claimed that it was a bad generator sent from the manufacturer and he has suggested that we be refunded. He was still waiting for a part on July 6th, when we last spoke to him. For the first 10 days, we rented another Generac and it quit after 10 days.

It is obvious that Generac is not able to handle our needs due to the quality of the Generac generator. Generac and Northern Tool have both refused to refund our money even after the authorized service center informed them that it was a factory defect that caused the problems in the first place. WARNING... if you have any problems after purchasing this generator, you will likely be ignored.

I bought a Generac power washer. I used it for a couple of hours until it ran out of gas. Per the instructions, I made sure the tank was empty, wiped it down so it was clean and looked like new and parked it in my garage. Two months later, I did the same thing. Next time I tried to use it, it would not start at all, not even a cough. I called Tractor Supply where I had bought it and they gave me the name of a local dealer to service it under the warranty. I dropped it off and a month later he called and said that Generac would not warranty it and I should come and pick it up. I went there and after questioning him discovered that he was actually NOT an authorized Generac facility.

So I called Generac directly and got the name of a real authorized warranty repair shop. I took it there. It also sat for about another month before the service tech called me back. He told me the whole engine was totally rusted out and that Generac would not warranty it. He had not called Generac and refused to call them. I have called Generac several times and eventually got a case number but so far nothing is happening but a snow job. I don't blame him for not wanting to call Generac. Good luck with that. Their wait time is too lengthy and when you choose the * key to get a callback, it does not happen. I called them again this afternoon, 6 hours ago and no callback. I was assured that I would not lose my place in the call line. Seriously???

So to summarize, I bought this power washer in December of 2015 and used it once; I then used it again around February for approximately 2 hours; in March it would not start and it is now August 2016. We want a whole house generator but will look at Honda. I would not buy a screwdriver from Generac. We took very good care of this equipment as we do everything. We are self-employed fabricators and have a workshop full of expensive tools. This power washer was only used to keep our house and sidewalks clean here in Florida. Caveat emptor.

I bought a new Generac 5500 watt portable generator a couple of years ago. I never needed it for the first two years. Finally in 2016, I removed the generator from its box. I had to put the tires and handle and a few other things together on the unit. After doing as the owners manual instructed to do before starting the unit, I then test run the unit. It started just fine and ran well, it seemed. I paid an electrician to wire into my house electrical box with a box connection outside. That was great and done well. Now the kicker. I plugged in the provided cord that came with the generator into the outlet box on the house. Started the generator and plugged in the cord to the generator. Now turning on each breaker one at a time that was to be used on the control box as one should do.

Once the 4 breakers were turned on, I went into the house to smell an electrical burn smell. The generator fried my garage forced burner, fried my central heating unit to the house, fried my 1500 watt electric oil heater, fried my surge protector to my computer. Generac never paid for the damages and it took forever to get any response from the.

I hired an electrician and come to find out the generator was never set to specs at the factory. The outlets on the generator should have been around 120 to 125 volts output. This generator was putting out 187 volts, good reason it would burn up items in the house. The electrician made the necessary adjustments and it works fine now. SO DON'T trust a Generac generator from the company and think it is going to work properly nor trust them to stand behind their unit. I will never buy a generator from them. I will look for a different company and brand. I was wanting to get a whole house generator some day but not from them.

I ordered a part through AP Electric. It was a Generac part that was shipped directly from Generac. When the package came the part we ordered was not correct... The box it came in was correct but the part inside the box was wrong. Between both companies no one wants to take responsibility and now almost a year later we still do not have the correct part. Mind you we paid almost $300.00 for this incorrect part. Generac is the worst company to deal with. All you get is the runaround and they will not exchange parts for us. All we want is the correct part...

June 1-16 we had a rash of severe thunderstorms. Within 2 weeks we had 2 direct, explosive lightning strikes to our generator (yes. To the generator) & it was dead, along with all the power in house that it was supposed to protect. We were the only house in a large community to be hit. Comments please.

Purchased a 15KW ecogen. We live off grid and have solar and the backup generator. It ran 2 hours and died. I requested my money back. They said, "No" but they would fix it. It was not fixable, it was under their very limited warranty, and it was replaced 3 months later. The new one just died. It has 441 hrs on it and has been well taken care of. The service dealer is 100 miles away because service people must go to Generac's school which costs them about 5k, 3000.00 for the course, 2000.00 for rooms, meals, and the other stuff they require them to purchase. This particular model is guaranteed for off grid, but it really just a piece of junk like all of their products. NEVER BUY GENERAC PRODUCTS.
