My microwave arced, burning a pencil-eraser sized hole in a plastic dish cover contained within (model #JE1660WB). After this incident, microwave would not heat. This is apparently a common problem with GE microwaves, as there are countless reports to be found online reporting similar experiences. While GE warranties the magnetron for 10 years, the cost of labor is the responsibility of the consumer, a cost that exceeds the original price of the unit. Therefore, I have filed a formal complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission effective 1/3/08. This is especially frustrating as my GE dishwasher (Model # GSD5130D00WW, Serial # AZ2867619B) stopped working literally hours before the microwave arced. While the dishwasher repair is covered by a recall, the repair is handled by A&E Factory Repair, a company that is notorious for no-shows, rudeness, and lengthy waits for completed work (on the order of several months in many cases). Given the questionable reliance of GE appliances, along with an almost non-existent customer support structure, I will go to any means necessary to avoid GE appliances in the future. I urge anyone who has had trouble with GE appliances to file a formal complaint with the CPSC at www.cpsc.gov. In addition, make your family safer by avoiding the use of GE appliances in your home.

I ordered a GE Spacemaker II from their internet site. They delivered it and it did not work out of the box, it was dead. They sent a replacement and it worked OK for a few months but whenever I used the microwave for anything but to heat up coffee or leftovers, it would overheat and go dead. Heating anything with liquid that causes moisture in the oven will cause the oven to overheat and go dead. I have used the microwave this way for 3 years. It is a very large device that heats coffee and cannot be counted on when preparing a holiday dinner.
Aggravation and loss of use when needed most.

We bought a new house in 2003 and included in our kitchen was a GE profile spacemaker model # JVM1660WB008. In the last 4 years it has stopped heating 3 times, and GE came out and replaced the heating element; and another time I don't remember exactly what went wrong with it, but we had to have it serviced again. I asked if they would replace the microwave since we have had all these problems, and they refused to replace it.
The last problem we had was MAJOR! I was heating something in the microwave that was mounted above our stove, and I had noticed it was taking longer and longer for things to heat. I assumed it was the heating element AGAIN! I walked up to the microwave to see if what I was heating was boiling, and just as I did the door burst open, hot liquid flying everywhere. Call it bad timing, but the door hit me right in the face bruising my nose and busted both my lips open, not to mention the burns from the liquid. I documented everything with pictures and Dr.'s notes.
I called GE and could not believe what they were about to tell me. The customer service rep. asked me what were you doing standing right in front of the microwave? I have the same microwave and I can see what's in there from across the room since there is a light in the microwave I told her it didn't matter what I was doing standing there; the thing is mounted over my stove. What if I was cooking? Bottom line: they did nothing! I asked for a replacement, but they refused, telling me they would sell me one at a discounted price. THERE PRODUCT ASSAULTED ME and they refused to do NOTHING! I will NEVER buy another GE product again!

GE Profile Spacemaker came with new home in 2001. Had to replace Magnetron twice at a cost of $250 each time. Sure the $180 part is under warranty, but they kill you on the service call--$75 just to come out and tell you its bad. Then another $180 labor to fix it. Or you can buy a new one for $400, plus the $75 charge to tell you that. Bad oven. Bad company.

Purchased a GE SpacemakerXL Microwave Oven in May 2004. In October 2007, it began arching around the metal rack. GE said arching was normal and because it had burnt and melted the plastic rack holder piece that I should replace the plastic piece and paint the visible burn marks around the inside of the microwave!
Now the microwave archs every time it is turned on whether the metal rack is inside or not. I have discontinued use and called GE only to be told that I should replace the unit. I also called Lowe's where I purchased to microwave to see if they would cut me a deal on a new unit and the answer was no.
Cost to replace unit is $400.

We have a space saver over the range microwave JVM1533WD. It is less than 4 yrs. old and it stopped heating. We were told it was probably the magnetron heating tube. It is under warranty, but the service is not. It would cost more to repair it than to buy a new microwave. RIDICULOUS!!

Just called GE customer service and am extremely disappointed. My microwave was installed 2 years ago, and it's cracking all around the handle for no apparent reason. They told me that I could no longer use the appliance because it may be leaking microwaves into my home, and that I would have to pay for the part and for the service- about $200. This is ridiculous! They should stand by their product! I'm not in the market of buying disposable microwaves - or any appliance for that matter.
I am going to have to purchase a new microwave at my expense. Very angry.

We bought a new GE Spacemaker over the range microwave model JVM165OBH02 in July 2005. The unit was made in May 2005. The unit quit working properly on December 5, 2007. On December 6, 2007 I contacted GE at 1800GECARES to inquire about an estimate for repair. I was told by Lowe's service department that the problem sounded like the magnatron was bad. A woman at the GE cares number could only schedule a repairman to come for a $69 fee and had no one I could speak with. She referred me to GE's consumer relations department at 800-386-1215 where I spoke with Fredora who told me she could schedule a repairman to come out and that he'd call before he arrived and I could ask him how much it would cost to repair the unit. Fredora scheduled the repairman for the following Wednesday December 12. On December 12 the repairman called and stated it would cost approximately $85 and I told him to come on to repair the microwave. He arrived 15 minutes later, pressed a couple buttons on the unit, checked his work computer and told me he had misquoted me and that the fee would be $185. I told him to forget it. He left and I wasn't charged anything. I called GE back and was placed on hold for over 25 minutes. I hung up and called again and spoke with a Supervisor Richard who was the most rude person with a lack of personal skills. I told him I wasn't suppose to be charge for the parts as per my conversation with Fredora. He scheduled for another serviceman to come the following Wednesday. Long story short, the repair fee they wanted to charge me was $185. I pulled the unit out and took it to a local repair shop who charged me $50. I'll never buy another GE product...count on that.

After replacing the over oven lights on my GE Spacemaker Microwave every two months for the last five years the control panel is now fried and there is no power to the lights. The repair estimate on this panel is more than the cost of a new microwave. Why can't GE design a microwave that uses standard light bulbs (like they make) that last longer and cost about $1.00 rather than $7.95. I have spent more money on light bulbs than I did for the Microwave Oven.

GE MICROWAVE MODEL NO. JVM1650SB004 SERIAL NO. HF900728 came with a metal rack designed for two level cooking. I left the rack in while cooking once, and it arced and burned a hole in the protective casing on the wall of the microwave. The microwave now shoots sparks with or without the rack and is unuseable. The inside wall of the unit is burned black at the spot it arced thru. The GE repairman inspected and said it's unrepairable and must be replaced.
I called GE customer service, they claim that it is operator error (using the rack with only one item in the microwave)and are refusing to replace it. It has already cost me $75 for the service call and will be over $300 to replace it using thier 40% discount offer. The fact that they even offer a discounted replacement shows they know there's a problem with the unit.

I need to replace a door handle on a GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven. I looked the part up on a GE site, and found it to cost $51.50 for a plastic door handle. I looked up other parts at random, checking part prices, and found all of them to be exceedingly expensive/OVERPRICED! When bringing them up to the rep, I was told that their prices are lower than their competitors. I don't care who sells or makes them, $51.50 for a plastic handle, is outrageous. The American consumer has been sold out by big business to the Chinese, paying through the nose for JUNK, and I'm fed up and mad. We've become a throw-away-society because of the greed of a few in big business, and hostage to foreign manufacturers.
We're left with the choice of buying a ridiculously OVERPRICED piece of plastic to fix an otherwise good piece of equipment, or buying a whole new unit for the sake of utility and cosmetic appearance. It's wasteful and insane to throw away an otherwise functional oven, just for the sake of a broken PLASTIC HANDLE. They're going to get our money, one way or the other, and they're determined to squeeze as much out of the consumer as they can possibly get away with. If this ain't gouging, I don't know what else it is.

I have a GE microwave model jvm1660. It stopped heating. So I called the 800 number and they told me it is the magnetron and that the magnetron is covered for ten years. They then tell me that I have to schedule a repairman and that the service call and labor are not covered. So I called 3 people that they gave me the number to call. It will cost an estimated $300 dollars, plus, for them to fix it. They all went into "I need 2 people to repair it". I really don't understand because only 1 was needed to install it.
Are they crazy? The cost of 2 repair men and labor is more then a new microwave. I do believe that they are aware of the problem because why else are they giving away extended warranty on it. GE refuses to to anything and told me they can't help.

On 12/2007, the lower part of the doorhandle came loose. I checked the internet, and this is a common problem. I spent a lot of time when the first problem occurred, with no satisfaction from GE. Is there any recourse available to me? I think that GE should replace and install a new microwave for me without charge. This has been a very unsatisfactory experience.

On 12-12-05 GE repair came to our house to fix our GE Microwave. They replaced the Magnetron, which had a 10 year warranty. They charged me 166.37 for LABOR! The repair man was only in the house for 20 minutes. Now less than 2 years later, the same 10 year warranty part (the magnetron) needed to be replaced again. This time the repair man came out to do the repair on 12-11-07 and again it took 20 minutes. This time I was charged $181.85. So I have had to invest $348.22 in service charges to replace a part that is supposed to last 10 years. I complained to their customer support line (1-800-386-1215) but after keeping me on hold several times and speaking with a supervisor, I was told that they could do nothing.
While the repair man was at my house, he told me our dishwasher had a recall, so he called and an appointment was made to fix that, although since it is a recall, there should be no charges, I will again need to take off work to have that work done. I have invested much time just trying to get through to GE, and much money both in lost wages and unreasonable 'labor' charges. Charging a customer that put faith in GE products what has to amount to almost $500.00 an hour for service on covered parts, is robbery. I am disgusted and disappointed in GE products and hope everyone I know hears my story.
I lost 1/2 days of work for both times that I had to be home to replace the same part. I spent $348.22 for repair, even though they say they did not charge me for the part that they had to replace twice in the past two years. e I spent at least an hour on various phone calls before and after the last service call. I think compensation for my time, aggravation and the $348.22 for service calls should be considered by GE.

But a few days ago I put in another bag of popcorn, and it started again arcing and smoking. I removed the air vent and started it again and could see the arcing and smoking in person. I shut it down and the next day removed the unit from the wall and started to remove out cover. There I saw the burned metal housing and the other wiring laying close to the burn spot; this could have caused other electrical problems and fire.

The microwave will not start at all. Tried to recycle power and still nothing. Removed the bottom of the vent panel and notice one of the two 120V, 20Watt light bulbs were shattered, glasses all over the cover.

I insisted that either the homebuilder or GE replaced the flap. The homebuilder paid to have the part replaced. Last month, the GE dishwasher started to generate tapping sounds at the end of each washing cycle. Thanksgiving day the aforementioned microwave oven stopped generating any heat. I'm concerned about my last GE appliance, which is a GE Profile flat cook range. It's not dead yet, but when I turn off the fire and tried to restart again for another dish, I cannot. There was a very loud arcing noise while the oven was running; and the interior of the oven, at the top, behind a plastic cover was flashing very bright blue color. The arcing was the end of the magnetron tube burning off and not the result of the oven needing cleaning. I ran and shut the oven off, and who knows what would have happened if the oven was left to run unattended. The magnetron has a 10-year-warranty, but the labor will come close to buying another oven.

Long story short, the microwave/range hood stopped heating this week, it, as we expected was Magnetron tube, a cost to replace (just the labor since the part is under warranty) of almost $200.
I want to just replace it, but with another brand, but am afraid it won't look right with my other GE appliances, and I'm afraid if we fix it, like we are doing, it might break again.

The microwave had only been running for approximately 90 seconds at the time the fire started. The microwave did not work after the fire. There was some question as to whether the plate my son was using was microwavable or not.
I assumed that it must not have been, so I discarded the microwave and thought no more of it. I purchased the same model microwave as a replacement in February of this year. After almost 2 months in possession of this microwave I was heating some chicken nuggets on a paper towel in the microwave. I cooked the first batch for 2 minutes and they came out fine.
I cooked a second batch ten minutes later, again for 90 seconds. After the microwave shut off I went to remove the food, but found the temperature of the exterior of the microwave to be several hundred degrees, causing burns on my fingers. The chicken nuggets inside the microwave were hard as a rock and burnt black. The microwave quit functioning after this incident.
I called Walmart and they refunded my money since I still had a receipt for the item.
As a result of the first incident the fire department had to respond to my residence. There was smoke damage throughout the ground floor of my residence. Extensive cleaning had to be done, and a great deal of food was ruined and had to be discarded due to smoke damage. Also, money was paid to replace the microwave. The second incident caused physical pain due to the burn on my hand. Had I gone outside or left the microwave unnattended on either occasion my house likely would have been destroyed by fire.

I purchased my home in August 2004 from a bank. The home had been lived in for less than 1 year and had been on the market for about 7 months. Earlier this year, I came home from work and the microwave was on as if it were cooking something. The incident scared me because I knew that no one had been home all day since I left that morning to go to work. And I hadn't used the microwave at all during that morning.
Anyway, I investigated to see if there was anything inside, and of course, there was not. I opened the oven door to check why it was operating and I could not detect why it was running. When I closed the door it continued to run--the turntable turned and the light was illuminated. I tried pressing the stop button to get it to stop, but it would not. After pressing several buttons to try to get the microwave to stop running, I finally unplugged it. That was the only way to get it to stop running. When I plugged it back in, it continued to run. I was left to leaving it unplugged.
Although it apparently was not cooking or heating, I was very concerned that whatever the problem was it could have caused a fire. I contacted GE with the model and serial information and they informed me that the microwave was no longer under warrantee. I asked about getting it repaired and they could only refer me to authorized repair dealers, which were not even within 30 miles of where I live. I asked about other alternatives and they had no other information other than it was not under warrantee. I decided not to have the repairs done because they estimated the costs to start at around $70.00.
This situation could have been very serious if they oven would have had anything inside of it and started on its own. I priced the same type of GE oven at Lowe's and the cost is between $250.00 and $400.00. Microwave failed to turn off while using the baked potato sensor setting for 2 large baking sized potatoes. Thick black smoke filled our home setting off our security system smoke alarm. The microwave was charred on the inside, and on the outside and had a terrible odor.
GE was called and they were not helpful. They accused us of not operating the unit properly and never heard of this problem. A technician was sent out and he reset the unit and found it to be working properly. He mentioned that the 'burnt' odor would remain and there was nothing we could eliminate the foul odor. The technician called GE and explained that we did not want this unit left in our home and we wanted compensation for the malfunction. We were told that there was nothing GE could do for us because the warranty had expired and we had apparently operated the unit improperly. We talked to a rude, obnixous representative from GE on the phone who had been talking to the technician and informed us that the technician was not allowed to remove the unit from our kitchen. We ended the conversation with the GE representative as we were wasting our time.
The technician was doing the best that he could and he loosened all of the screws that held the unit in place. He was put in an uncomfortable place being told he was not to assist in the dismantling of the unit. We removed it from the kitchen and placed it in our garage. We were leaving the next day for a cruise and would be gone for several weeks. If this had been left in our home we would have come back to a terrible odor. GE never again contacted us and we were forced to purchase a new microwave. We did purchase a new microwave and are extremely satisfied with the new brand. WE will never purchase another GE product. Why do we allow a company to continue selling a product that has had so many safety problems? GE did not bring good things to life in our home...it nearly ended our life.

I bought a new house three years ago with a variety of GE appliances. The dishwasher quit after a year, but that's not why I'm writing. My model JE 186 0GB microwave started throwing sparks and arcing while warming some salmon for 30 seconds. The smell of burning plastic is evident. I came online to check for the cost of a replacement, and came across an identical consumer complaint regarding the same appliance.

On December 21, 2004 we closed escrow and moved into a new townhouse equiped with a GE Monogram Kitchen dishwasher, microwave, stove, and refrigerator). On December 25 when we were preparing our holiday dinner, the microwave quit. An effort was made to repair it on three separate occasions. It was finally replaced. Last week this second microwave quit working. On December 26, 2005 the dishwasher flooded our kitchen when we were away enjoying our holiday weekend. The stove has had a recall. I waited all day on two separate days for the service technician to come. Our service window was from 8-12. No one came either day. The appointments were canceled at 4:30 in the afternoon. Hopefully someone will show up tomorrow to take care of the stove and hopefully the microwave.

I bought a GE microwave oven model # JES1036 less than a year ago. I put some rice in the rice cooker and less than 10 minutes later the house was filled with toxic plastic smell from the melted rice cooker and the inside of the microwave turned brown. My entire kitchen smells like burnt plastic and the microwave has to be thrown away. I keep receipts for everything but of course cannot locate the receipt for this item. After reading the postings on the consumer affairs website, I will not be buying another GE product. Thank you for this service.

Count me among the dissatisfied customers who purchased a GE Spacesaver Microwave, model JVM1650SB004. I purchased this unit Jan 2005 and within the first week experienced a shut down while nuking some veggies. At the time I was boiling water on the stove below the unit. Apparently, the steam was too much for the unit to handle which is odd since it is designed to serve as a range hood. When I called customer service they said something to the effect, 'not to worry... let us know if it happens again.”
Two months later, I had the same problem, but was again reassured that this was part of the built in safety feature to prevent major failures. Over the next couple of months I noticed that it was taking longer and longer for things to heat. Eventually the 'reheat' cycle was worthless as the unit would produce an error code message stating this cycle was designed to heat 'single meal' serving sizes... even though I was heating up a small portion of food. Again... I was told this was nothing to worry about and was to prevent overheating.
Finally, just after the 1 yr warranty period expired, the unit stopped working. It would not heat anything as the magnetron failed. A service tech was dispatched and repaired my unit at a 'special rate' of $75 after explaining to me that the cost was so low because there was a known issue with this model. He said that over the course of the last couple years he has replaced 100's if not 1,000s of magnetrons. After reading reports on the web, this indeed is a very common problem. I feel I should not have had to pay for this repair. The part was obviously poorly manufactured and should have been recalled. A quality issue is the last thing I would have suspected from a Company like GE. But then again… my unit was probably made overseas. I just hope the other appliances I purchased for my kitchen remodeling don't suffer the same fate.

We went to relace a lightbulb under our over-the-range microwave and when we put the new ones in, the did not light. When I called GE to find out why, they told me if we relaced the lightbulbs without unplugging the unit first, we would burn out the circut board. There was no outward warning of any kind on the unit warning the consumer. There were steps to take in the owners manual for replacement, but how many people reference an owners manual to change the lightbulb?
The cost of the repair was almost the same as a new model. The customer service representative talked as if it was common knowlege among GE that if you change a lightbulb without first unplugging the unit, you will burn out the circut board. If such a simple error will cause such catastrophic there should be a warning in the unit near the lighbulb to prevent this error. I feel this is a way GE's consumers can make a very simple error, and GE would benefit from it.

I bought GE microwave (Stainless steel finish, Model No. JEM31SF001) from a local GE appliance dealer about 14 months ago. The white paint over the cooking tray inside has started peeling and falling in food. I called the numbers above and was told that it is now out of warranty. GE is offering $75 towards the purchase of a new microwave. They will charge $59 for someone to come and take a look at the problem.
Before this I had a Panasonic microwave which we used for almost 15 years but needed to buy a new one to match our new kitchen appliances. Now I can not heat anything without a cover for fear of the falling paint. Buying GE microwave has been one of the worse mistakes I made. Should have gone with the Panasonic. GE is so big that they really do not care about small customers. I hope they will read this and change their attitude.
Giving some token gift certificate to buy a new GE microwave will increase their sale, profit but fill the dump yards. Besides I would end up paying much more than just the price of microwave as this is fitted inside the cabinets.

Microwave oven--"Hood" that goes above your stove. Only three years old and we have had the following problems: Magnatron went out after just one year of use. For this GE covered all labor and parts since it was still under warranty. Now we started having trouble where the turntable was no longer working and the microwave was arcing whenever you tried to use it. Contacted GE and thought they were going to work with us again satisfactorily. We bought GE on the strength of their name and what we thought was a reliable product.
This time GE will only give us a discount on the parts needed to fix it (which there are about 5 different parts that need replacing). They will not cover the cost of labor. The customer service rep got very rude on the phone when I requested the name of someone higher up I could talk to about my dissatisfaction with this product and all the trouble it had given us in only three years. We are very frustrated and extrememely unhappy with GE. We now regret choosing GE products when we built our home.

In August 2005 I purchased a new GE microwave for $450.00 in preperation to move into my new home. I installed it in September 2005. It worked for one month, then it would start up and kick off after 3 or 4 seconds. I called Ge to arange for a repair technican to come out. A&E Factory Service in Edina MN came out. I found out from GE that this is who they contract through for repairs. The repair technician showed up and immediately stated that they don't carry any repair parts for GE Microwaves and he has not even worked on one. The repairman ordered $1248.70 in replacement parts, said he didn't know what was wrong with the microwave and that this should fix it.
The parts arrived and I had to take another day off work. A different technician came and installed the parts. After he powered up the microwave it performed exactly as it did before. It ran for 3 or 4 seconds and quit running. The technician said that it should be ok and left, two days later I called Ge once again and complained. I told them that the oven still does nor work and that I have already taken two days off work and want my oven fixed and to be compensated for the time I have had to take off. GE offered to extend the factory warranty for 3 months on a product that doesn't work.
I made yet another appointment to have the oven looked at, the technician came out and said he would order the same parts again, another $1200.00 in parts!! The parts were to be here on 1/6/05 and the technician was supposed to arrive on 1/6/05 and install them. No parts have arrived and no technician has arrived. I e mailed GE on 1/3/05 and told them I want a new oven and that I want to be compensated for the now all totaled 4 days I have had to take off work. They e mailed me back apologizing for my inconvinience and to call them once again to try and get resolution on this matter

I bought a GE Spacemaker Microwave in August 1999. Within 18 months, the magnetron tube had failed. GE came out and replaced the part free of charge, but charged me $124.95 for labor. My father bought the same microwave and the same thing happened to him, but his service tech did not charge them for labor because "the magetron tubes are defective in these microwaves that were manufactured during this time period".
In April 2004, the magnetron tube failed again. Called GE, had them come out and after literally fighting with the woman on the phone, the only thing she would do is reduce the service call fee to $75.00 even though there is a known problem with the magnetron tubes for these microwaves. Fast forward to December 2005, and guess what? The magnetron tube failed AGAIN.
Called GE,asked why this keeps happeing and was told "I can not answer any questions for you. I will be happy to send a service tech out to answer your questions ~ for a fee". I told her to forget it and just send me the part and I will have a local appliance repair man fix it instead of giving the money back to GE. Spoke with the parts department and then demanded to speak with someone who will answer questions about why there is an ongoing problem with these microwaves. I got a very helpful woman (sorry, forgot to take down her name ~ kicking myself now for that) that admitted to me that during the time that my microwave was manufactured, they were put together by an outside company and they are aware that there are multiple ongoing problems with magnetron tube failures.
She offered to have a service tech come out and repair it free of charge and that if in fact it was the magnetron tube again, they may consider replacing the microwave with a new model since it is the third time this same part has failed. Today the tech came and told me that in fact it is the magnetron tube again (big surprise) and he needed to call the office to authorize the free service call. After I told the service tech about my offer of getting it replaced, he let me speak with the GE office. I spoke with Peggy Martinez and I was told that I was never offered a replacement and that there are no known problems with magentron tube failures in these microwaves.
They said the only thing I was offered was the service call free of charge and they will not be replacing it because it is repairable. I asked her what happens when the magnetron tube is no longer covered (9 years from the date of purchase) and it fails again (which we all know it will). Then the part is no longer covered, nor will the labor be covered. I was pretty much told, too bad for you. She consitently ran arond my questions and told me that there was no one above her I could speak with and when questioned about why the woman last week offered the information about the ongoing problems, I was told that the woman lied to me.
It was also implied that I lied about getting the replacment offer, which was incredibly offensive to me. To top it all off, the woman just said there was nothing else she would do for me and proceded to hang up on me.

We had purchased a GE microwave (model #JE1860GB) in June 2004. In December 2005 the microwave caught fire while cooking mashed potatoes for 30 seconds. The plastic at the top of the inside of the microwave had started to melt and caught on fire. Flames came out of the front and almost burnt our ceiling but the fire department arrived to put the fire out. They examined the microwave and documented in their fire report that the cause was due to a defective microwave part. It was an extremely scary situation and I fear of what could have happened to our family had we not been in the kitchen when the fire started.

I called GE Customer Service today and was told that their could be numerous reasons but if it was the ONE part (magnetron tube) the part would be covered but NOT the service/labor which starts at $69.95.
I am better off buying a new microwave for all the hassle and the fact that the service/labor will probably cost more than a new one. I am upset because they could not give me any direct answers and there is NO reason a microwave i paid over $100.00 for should fail this early. My last microwave lasted me 10 years w/out any issues!
