My microwave (JKP90WM1WW), a combo micro/oven unit, turned on by itself, and started burning. Only way to shut off was to turn off the breaker. I see where there were recalls listed in 12/07 for the same problem. However, my unit was manufactured in 3/08, and therefore no recall has been submitted for this model and year, but I think the same problem is prevalent. I have contacted the CPSC today (9/3/09) and understand there is a class action lawsuit filed by a Hasaan ** of Washington, DC, with the same complaint. I have gotten nowhere with GE as they say they have not heard of this problem and would send out a repairman to analyze the problem at $100 an hour, but my best estimate for repair would be between $400 to $600 and no guarantee this same problem wouldn't happen again. I think the only way we can be safe with this unit (if it is repaired) is to shut off the breaker every time we leave the house. What a hassle, but I don't want to come home to a pile of ashes or even have it smoldering while we are asleep. Right now my $2000 micro/oven unit is unusable (purchased 4/08). We have had to purchase a separate microwave to do our cooking. Hope you can help. Thank you.

I have a two-year old GE Profile SS microwave. It powers on then immediately powers off and then the screen freezes. Sometimes, it powers on again and then freezes for weeks at a time. It is a year warranty and the smart board is $150, not on the GE website. It is $299 on it! That's the end on any GE products. Karma is a **, huh, GE? No wonder your stock is worthless.

We purchased a new home with GE Profile stainless appliances installed - they cost a premium. The Microwave lasted approximately 16 months before it broke suddenly. $140 service call later, I was informed that it would cost an additional $150 to repair. The condition was a loud ticking noise and absolutely no heating of contents. It turned out to be the main component in the unit...made in south Asia by the lowest bidder. I decided to buy a new one and bought the Adora to save $125. 14 months later, the unit stopped working suddenly (between making kid's oatmeal breakfast) - exact same condition. I am really tweaked by this.
The Refrigerator Ice Maker produced an ice cube that was too large. The ice cubes merged during freezing and caused a severe problem dispensing through the door - a loud grinding noise with nothing coming out. Then it went through 3 of these cheap plastic drive rings located on the spiral dispensing bar. One after the other they broke - a $28 part that cost a quarter to mold. Finally, I stopped replacing it and I just open the door to get my ice - thank you, GE.
Nine (9) emails on their customer service site have gone unanswered. No phone support available. Yet after replacing the microwave, I received 5 letters offering extended warranty protection from the company. Now, I am no idiot (or maybe I am for yielding to my desire to maintain matching appliances), but what does this say about the company? They just took my money at the store and then they inform me that it is going to break in between years 1 and 3. The executives of this company deserve to have all the near new appliances that simply "broke" dumped on their front yard - blocking the Hyundai from getting out of the garage of their palatial mansions.

I have had a GE SpaceMaker JVM1650 over-the-range microwave. It was built in August 2004 and installed in our house. We bought the house from the first owner in 2006. It is now August 2009 and for the past year, the microwave would just reset itself a few seconds after turning it on. After this reset, I would have to put in the time, AM or PM, and then put in the date, then I would have to try it again. Most of the time, it would work again for a while. This past week, it happened about 6 times repeatedly, so I started researching it. I found that this is most likely a bad magnetron problem that GE has had since the 90's. I called GE and found I only had a one-year warranty. I verified this by pulling up the owner's manual. What a load of crap. To replace the Magnetron myself would have been about $130.
I seriously have microwaves at work from the mid-80's that get the crap kicked out of them daily in our factory and they still work great, yet this microwave in my house in perfect condition can't function as designed. After last week's fiasco, trying to get a burrito cooked, I went to Consumer Reports and found the replacement microwave. I went to Lowe's and got a Samsung, top-rated stainless microwave for less than $300 and it has a ten-year warranty on the magnetron. I installed it in about an hour and it seems to work great. Screw GE and any of their crappy appliances. Our last GE dishwasher in our old house had a recall on it. The GE fridge in our new house doesn't get cold enough and it makes a weird noise at times. The GE dishwasher doesn't' do a great job and the GE gas range takes for freaking ever to boil water. I am done with GE and look forward to replacing every appliance I have with anything but a piece of crap GE.

My 4 year old GE Spacemaker Over the Range Microwave oven, Model EMO3000, stopped working on August 25, 2009. When I attempted to use the oven, it started and shut down in 2 seconds. The oven required a reset of the clock prior to attempting to use it again. After resetting the clock, the same problem occurred and the unit is completely non-functional. In researching the problem, a simple Google search reveals numerous complaints about the same problem with the Spacemaker ovens. This appears to be a known defect in the product. I contacted GE as this problem is not listed on their website and received generic replies for repair.
My question to GE was directed at acknowledging a known defective product and offering a reasonable solution for remedy. GE is unwilling to take responsibility for marketing a subpar product and encourages repairs, which according to consumer complaints, cannot resolve the inherent defective nature of the product. It is unacceptable to not inform the consumer, at the time of purchase, that this product has a limited lifetime due to poor quality in the manufacturing process. GE is selling defective and sometimes dangerous products and should be held accountable. The microwave oven is too costly to repair and reviews of consumer experiences indicate that the defects cannot be cured. The only option is to discard the product.

My GE Spacemaker is less than 3 yrs. old and has a mind of its own. It starts beeping randomly and we have to turn off the breaker to make it stop. When we turn it back on, F3 code flashes on the display screen w/ a continuous beep. Sometimes, you can press the keypad and it will function, but most of the time it is dead. I called the appliance store where I purchased this micro and was told I would have to pay an hourly service fee of $70 to have someone come out and tell me what the problem is. Shouldn't a microwave last longer than 3 years? It is so unfair for a company to get the consumers' money and not stand behind the products they promote and sell us.

I purchased a new GE Profile Microwave, installed it in October 2002. It is vented through the roof, all of the vent piping is insulated and yet we continually get a buildup of grease/oils in the top which drip down inside. There is good exhaust to the outside. Any solution to the issue, model AD929487 S serial-JVM1190WYC-04, unit is a GE Profile Convection V. Consequences: lots of extra cleanup required. The top cabinets are being discolored.

We moved into a new place on July 29, 2009 with all GE Profile appliances all from 2001. The night before our move, our 2003 GE Profile microwave stopped heating anything - it's completely shot. Since we had to have one based on sale of our house, we bought a new one for $399 with installation. Remember, we moved out of state the next day, so there's no time to search out the best costs.
Now in the new place after only 3 weeks, our Arctica fridge water line was not working, and the fresh food section was always too cold and froze. With our microwave, you could not really read the read-out, and the turntable stopped working immediately. Finally, our double wall ovens stopped working. It's unbelievable. We have only lived here 3 weeks.
Service came timely from GE, and the guy could not have been more efficient or nicer. However, the fridge needs $300 for part plus $85 for service call (We decided to get a new one, not GE.), the ovens had to have a $350 part (He compensated the service call.), and the microwave will need a new turntable motor at $200 and a new digital controller at $300. No! A new microwave is only $300! So, we fixed the oven and are getting a new fridge and microwave. We will not buy GE Profile again.

We own a GE spacesaver microwave (Model: JVM1870SF2) and the glass microwave tray broke in two while heating food! The unit is about four years new. Ordering one from GE is about $100! I still paid $50 from third-party. Amazing. I have used more variety of GE medical products than probably anyone in U.S. because of my diverse medical training: diagnostic ultrasound; MRI scanners; CT scanners; general x-ray; specialized IR, and cardiac c-arm machines. GE currently cannot repair problems on my cardiac equipment at a major hospital for one year now. As a consumer, every company out there makes junk. Part of the bigger problem is us. We've been programmed to expect less, after years of using Chinese-infused products. Glass microwave plates breaking when being heated?
What did the engineers think it was going to be used for? $100 for replacement. Pyrex glass bowls (same thing) cost $5.87 at Walmart and they use more glass. Come on, GE. I'm obviously a brilliant person to use all those medical devices and my opinion counts big time. I lost $100 for something which should have been manufactured to withstand heat of a microwave oven.

On May 29, 2009, I bought four GE Profile appliances, installed by AJ Appliance in Toms River, NJ. Three days later, I called to complain that the microwave and dishwasher don't work properly. The dishwasher doesn't shut off and microwave has a mind of its own. The service man came out and said he has to order parts for both units. After two months of complaining and arguing with them, now it's Aug. 7, 2009 and the units are still broken and I'm getting no satisfaction. I asked for new replacements and they said they couldn't do it. I had to unplug the microwave before it starts a fire and dishwasher will run forever without turning off. The dishwasher melted dishes in it because it won't shut off and continues to heat up inside. Microwave got so hot I unplugged it before it starts a fire. Microwave goes on by itself?

In May 2009, I purchased an all new kitchen appliances from GE. After a few weeks, the OTR MW Model JVM1850SM2SS caught fire while MW popcorn. After 1 minute, the entire MW was filled with smoke and the popcorn scorched. I contacted GE service and the tech told customer relations that the incident was caused by customer abuse.
I guess he knew better than to say that to my face. The fire caused a burn mark in the rear of the unit. GE sent touch up paint but that has not helped. I still have popping sounds when I use the MW. GE's last offer was to replace my unit with a new one. My cost would be 50% of the original price plus $75 service fee. Cost to me would be $312. I told GE that can put the offer where the sun doesn’t shine.
I also requested a copy of the service calls which I received. The service calls do not state a reason for the fire or service performed. I guess they are covering the area where the sun doesn’t shine. Bottom line, do not buy GE appliances. Consequences: permanent burn mark in the MW and occasional flashing when MW is in use.

So if this was repaired in the first 30 days, I should still have warranty until 4/2010 on this magnetron. The tech came out and spent less than 3 minutes and said, "the part is under warranty but labor is $140 or you owe me $80 for 3 minutes. How would you like to pay?" My response was, "You can take this GE appliance and put it where the sun don't shine." I have a GE microwave that doesn't work and is taking up space in my kitchen. I purchased a GE microwave oven (model WES14500M1BB) for my 86 year old mother on 12/28/08 and it quit working six months later for no reason. I called GE to see if they would replace or fix it and was told that I might be eligible for a type of rebate. I complained that I either wanted it replaced or repaired and was told that if I did not like the rebate program, they would put me down as refusing it. I stated that I was not refusing it but would like to speak to her supervisor or manager and was told that she was a case worker and I was not going to speak to anyone else. I understood that I would be receiving something in the mail for this "rebate" but have yet to hear from them.
I doubt that they will make good on the faulty microwave. I am frankly surprised on how little GE cares for its customers. They build faulty equipment, will not honor repairs or replacements, and their personnel could care less. I am now stuck with a non-working microwave from GE and they got my money. I will not buy another GE appliance again. This is shameful.
I paid $112 for a microwave that does not work. My 86 year old mother who relies on a microwave oven now can't cook at home and I have to spend time writing to agencies to inform on this shameful response from GE. I will probably be out another $100 or more to replace the oven for my mom myself. And it sure won't be a GE appliance!

Just to say, I bought a GE SpaceMaker in early 2009 to replace the 20-year-old grungy one left in the condo I bought. The oven stopped heating three months later. I scheduled an online appointment with GE, it was kept and the tech said the problem was the magnetron. He ordered one and had it shipped to my home. It came in three days. Then I scheduled a repeat visit. The tech came and installed the part, and the oven has worked fine since then. I was never charged anything, for visits (2) or part.
I was very impressed by GE's policies and performance. But the frequent failure of the magnetron mentioned in an earlier post was certainly borne out by how quickly my SpaceMaker failed.

Our General Electric microwave (model JES1288SH03) occasionally (about every 6th time it’s used) makes a rattling noise, popping sound, bright light in the top right corner by the element and smokes. When I contacted GE they basically told me that because it was more than a year old I would have to pay a technician to come out and look at. According to GE, if it is still heating then there is nothing wrong with the unit itself. Are they concerned at all about the bright light and smoke? No--not as long as it's still "heating"! Why would I pay someone $100-plus to possibly repair a $250 unit that is less than three years old? I opt to throw this microwave in the trash and replace it with something other than a GE product. I will never purchase another GE product. What is wrong with our country that we can't get adequate customer service?

We have a General Electric microwave model number GE JVM1450WA that we bought in October of 1998 while remodeling out kitchen. Last week, the unit stopped heating food. Everything else seems to work fine, lights, fans, clock, etc. but the unit will not heat up the food. I was instructed that this was due to a failed magnetron and that I should consider replacing the Microwave. The unit is just over 10 years old and the manufacturers warranty has long expired, so I am not too disappointed.
The unit has been a good product but after reading all of the negative complaints regarding General Electric microwave ovens, I am concerned about their reliability. I have recently had to replace two GE microwaves at my work as they have both failed in a relatively short period of time. The first was about four years old and the second one was just over one year old. I have never personally had any other brand of microwave oven but I remember my parents having a Quasar countertop model for over 20 years that just would not quit. They ended up giving the unit away and buying a newer, smaller unit that took up less counter space.
Since my microwave ovens at home and work are all wall mounted, (over the range) units, each new microwave oven installed means more holes drilled in my walls and cabinets. Even though I am replacing one older GE model with another newer GE model, each microwave oven seems to have its own unique mounting hardware and thus requires drilling additional holes in my walls and cabinets. I am starting to worry about the structural integrity of the wallboard and cabinet bottom to hold up the microwave oven securely. It seems that the mounting hardware should be standardized, at least within the same manufacturer's line of product!

I only had my GE microwave for 1 year, then all of a sudden, the buttons stopped working. In order for me to get to work, I have to unplug it and then use only the express buttons to cook food. I can't set my own time to cook food. The start button, the clear button--none of the buttons work. When I want to re-use the microwave again, I have to repeat the same steps of unplugging it then pushing one of the express buttons. This is tedious, because it is mounted over the stove and my family needs to use a step ladder to unplug and plug the darn thing when they need to use it.
I had no idea after reading all of the other complaints on this page that GE had so many problems with their products. It's a lesson learned for me. Now I'm worried that all of my other appliances will stop working, because they are all GE products also and just over a year old. And I really don't want to pay for new appliances because this company fails to produce reliable products.

I bought a brand new GE microwave over the counter from Lowe's in Williamsburg, VA on Feb.19, 2009. We had it installed by their subcontractors, Gault Electric, the next week. They picked up the microwave and brought it to us when they came to install it. From the very beginning, my husband and I kept smelling something but we thought it was the newness of it. On Tuesday, April 14, I was using the microwave and all of a sudden, I smelled something burning and it cut off. Everything just went blank. I immediately called my husband at work who said to call Lowe's, so I did. I told them what happened. They got in touch with GE and called me back saying GE wanted me to call them. GE proceeded to say that I'm under contract, so they can send a repair person out. I said I don't want my microwave repaired. I want a new one. We went back and forth on the matter. They said I would have to go back to Lowe's for a new one because that's where I bought it. All they can do is repair it if it can be fixed.
GE went as far as to say, "If you bought a pair of shoes from a store and something was wrong with them, you wouldn't send it back to the manufacturer, would you? You would take them back where you bought them." So I said, "Okay but Lowe's is telling me to call you." Again, GE said, "We can send a repair person out. You have a 1-year contract." So after a few calls speaking with Miranda and Debbie, I called GE back to set up an appointment. The repairman (John) came on Thursday, 04/16/09. He told me that the microwave had a bad power board and showed me the part, and that's why we were smelling something. You could see the burnt part. John thought he had a part for it, but it wasn't the right piece he said after me telling him that Lowe's said if he deems the microwave unfixable, then I could get a new one.
He said, "Of course, I'm a repairman. I can fix it." I said, "But I want a new one." So he said I would have to talk to Lowe's. He could set up another appointment to come back with the part and fix it. I made the appointment which was Thurs., 4/23/09. I called Lowe's to let them know what the problem was and again I stated I want a new microwave. If I wanted one fixed, I would have kept my old over the counter microwave that I had for 12 years since we bought our home. So on Saturday, 4/18/08, the repairman John called me to say he had the part and if I would be home, he could come by since he was in the area. Confused on what to do, I asked him to call me back in 5 minutes. I asked my husband and I called Lowe's and spoke with Debbie. I told them GE's repairman wanted to come today. Debbie told me to let him come, that's what she would do. Again, I told her I still wanted a new microwave (over the counter) but I would let him come.
When the repairman called me back, I told him to come on and he did. And right now, it's working. But I'm not comfortable with that one. I paid for a brand new and I got a faulty one which had to be repaired in less than 2 months. I'm still waiting to hear from Lowe's. I spoke with Debbie on Saturday and she promised me she would call GE when she came in Monday, 4/20/09. In fact, she said she would even come in a little earlier to take care of this matter. I haven't heard from her today. So I called the store again and spoke with Katelyn. She said Debbie wasn't there and Miranda was in a meeting. So I'm still waiting to hear from them. I want a new microwave. I really feel as a consumer, I'm not being treated fairly. Lowe's is worrying about getting paid from GE so that has to have a sign off from GE. In other words, I am really upset. Everybody seems so sympathetic but not enough to give me, the consumer, a new microwave.

Then, smoke and fire followed. I couldn't believe it. I opened the door and blew out the burning plastic cover of the magnetron, which is on the top inside of the microwave. A hole was burned through the cover the size of a quarter.
After speaking with experienced people in the appliance business, I've come to learn that all microwaves die a death like this. They either burn up their wires, start smoking, buzzing, or start on fire when the magnetron focuses too much power in one spot. If I had known this, I would have bought a new microwave every five years just to avoid the fire hazard. I am so glad I was home when this fire happened. I can only imagine what the outcome would have been if someone else like my kids were operating it at the time. The moral lesson is toss out your old microwave frequently at least every 7 years. Don't wait for the fire to happen. Save your life and avoid the imminent threat to your family. Be smart. Toss it out. Report your claims to the U.S. Product Safety Commission.

We bought our GE Profile Spacemaker XL 1800 36" Microwave oven in 2003 for our remodeled kitchen. It is designed to about our range and to fit snugly between the cabinets. The other day, it just stopped heating food and made a loud humming sound. After doing some research online, it seems that there have been many problems with this GE product and, in most cases, it is an issue with the magnetron. I do not want to pay hundreds of dollars for a repair visit and another $150 for the part. Because our cabinets were built to fit the microwave, I need a microwave of the same size if I'm going to replace it. Has anyone repaired/replaced the magnetron themselves? Are there any easy-to-follow instructions on doing this?

I was baking a small potato in the GE Spacemaker Microwave. I heard the alarm go off in my apartment and noticed that there was smoke filling the kitchen. I saw a fire in the microwave and tried to press the off button. However, the off button would not go off. I pressed the button for at least a minute and then opened the door of the microwave to get the potato out. The microwave evidently just stopped. Of course, the microwave is inoperable. I am very concerned that a microwave can just start random fires.

We bought a GE microwave oven about 2 months ago. After about a month of use, it gave a loud buzz, lit up, and smoked. We were stupid and did not keep the receipt, so we went out and bought the same one (because it was the size and color we needed and we assumed it was just a fluke). We have had the new one for 2 weeks, and it did the exact same thing! This time we kept the receipt and returned it. Obviously, after reading all of these posts, GE needs to recall these microwave ovens! Before this, we had a Litton microwave that worked for 25 years! It actually never quit; we just felt it was time to upgrade to digital. Big mistake. Things are not made like they used to be. I can tell you this... I will never buy a GE product again.

On 10/22/04, we bought a JEB1095SB GE Profile Microwave and paid $872.10 for it. On 1/21/05, we paid $150.50 for the service call to repair the magnetron and diode that went out. That was the first time. Later on that next year, it made a loud vibrating noise followed by a pop with sparks flying out and no heat. There was no way we were going to pay the outrageous price of a GE service call again, so my husband being an electrician fixed it. Last week (04/2009), it happened again. I got online and that is when I saw all of the complaints on this model. Apparently, GE hasn't learned a thing since the first complaints in 2000. You would think a company as large a GE would get their stuff together. I am very angry and I will never buy GE again. We have since replaced the GE with another model that was way cheaper and heats a whole lot better than the high priced GE ever did.

I had my GE microwave for only 2 months and the magnetron tube split in half. After GE replaced it, now the vent fan comes on and off when the microwave is not in use. It has been 2 months since they replaced the magnetron and now it split again. When is someone going to do something about this? Why would GE continue to keep selling defective merchandise? My microwave was my Christmas present and it's only April 3rd, and the magnetron has gone out twice. It takes a week for GE to come and look at it and then they have to order parts and then they have to come back out. It seems like that would be costing them and they would manufacture a magnetron tube that wasn't defective. Shouldn't someone step in and help the consumer? Why are companies allowed to sell defective merchandise? Isn't there a consumer protection agency?

In Oct. of 2008, we purchased a microwave/convection oven from our local Home Depot. The first oven had a fist-sized dent on the side and had to be replaced. When the second oven was installed, it would randomly make a loud buzzing noise while cooking the food and did not brown the food evenly. Home Depot came out and checked, but they were unable to make the oven produce the buzzing during their visit.
After dealing with this for several months, we decided to ask for the oven to be exchanged. I called the number on the GE warranty book and was told we were out of luck, no exchange. I asked if I might talk to someone else and talked to Bobbie ** at a 1-800-386-1215 number. She told me Home Depot was obligated to stand behind their products as a GE distributor.
Home Depot replied that their warranty only covered thirty days. The expediter called GE and arranged for a technician to make a service call on Feb. 20. On the 19th, someone called from GE to troubleshoot over the phone. She told us the magnetron tube would make different noises due to different types of food being cooked. (It would, however, produce the buzzing at different times while cooking the same food.)
When the GE technician arrived the next day, he was unable to fix the problem. He told me the uneven cooking appeared to be a design problem. I asked for him to just exchange the oven, and he replied even his boss couldn't get an oven exchanged. How is it that a purchase in excess of four hundred dollars is not backed by warranty? We had the product less than five months, and I expected a company as large as GE to be reputable. We ended up buying a much more expensive oven that actually worked. I think GE owes me the additional difference in cost. I'll never buy another GE appliance.

GE, what a company. First of all, don't ever buy a GE appliance or dare I say anything from this company. Bought a new house 6 years old, furnished with GE appliances: dishwasher, stove, microwave. Refrigerator is Amana, no problems. Come home from hospital after having a baby and microwave does not work, great timing. Call for service, rude technician comes out and says, "You need a new microwave. Here's a bill for 100 for that brilliant advice." Hormones kick in, call and ** so much they have him come out and fix it for free, minus the 100 dollars for service call. Thanks for the favor. Fast forward one year, dishwasher starts flooding water all over the floor into finished basement.
Happens a couple of times, decide to hand wash, much cheaper than having a service guy come out to tell me I need a new dishwasher for 100 bucks. Hand wash dishes for family of 4 until we can afford dishwasher. 2 weeks ago, surprise! Oven goes. My husband calls and makes appointment for service, tells them the part and what's wrong with it. Rude service tech comes in, sits at my kitchen table with his laptop and tells me it will be over 300 dollars to fix the oven. He has the part in his hand. His labor is 175$. It would maybe take him 15 mins to install part. Oh, best part is the top burner is broken too but I'm too petrified to ask how much that would be. Refuse service. At this point, I want nothing to do with GE.
So now I just lost 100$ for an estimate and I still have a broken oven. Called customer service and all they say is, "This is a valid charge, ma'am." So now, I have a broken dishwasher and oven. And I'm out 100$. Going to refurnish appliance with anything but GE or any company owned by GE. They really suck and besides, I think appliances should last more than six years anyway right? From what I have been reading, it looks like I'm lucky. I got more than one out of them. DO NOT BUY GE. BUYER BEWARE!

Fortunately, right after the warranty expired. We call GE and they sent a technician who replaced the magnetron. The technician charged a small fortune for about 20 minutes of work. I was shocked when he billed us $389 dollars. To my disbelief, the magnetron just broke down again. A little over a year since the last repair. That's another $400 to repair. Since I didn't pay for the extended warranty, I had to dish out more money. At this rate, I'll be paying about $400 every other year for this piece of ART.

Our GE Spacesaver microwave was acting strange. By strange I mean, I couldn't turn off the light over the stove. It just went from dim to bright. It would say off, but the light was still on. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it was fine for a day or two, but then it would do the same thing. Yesterday, I heard something running, but could not figure out where it was coming from. I finally came closer to the microwave and found the noise coming from it. No light was on and the usual fan running noise was not present. I got a flashlight and looked through the door. The turntable was going around as if the unit was in use.
I was concerned this might be a fire hazard and that there might be a recall, so I got online to check and found this website. Thinking back, I have also heard an occasional pop or crack. After reading all the problems others have had, I don't think we will bother with a warranty or repairs. We'll probably just get a new unit and not one associated with GE.

Purchased a GE JES1136 in May 2007. It was fine until a week or so ago - now sometimes, but not always, we will hear a loud buzzing noise periodically when the microwave is heating. At first I just thought, weird, what the heck, but sometimes it happens for longer & longer periods, and more often, and I noticed that when it makes this noise I can see a bright fluorescent yellow light/lightning behind this small maybe 1.5 x 2.5 inch panel on the upper left part of the right wall of the microwave. Also, if it is allowed to do this for more than a second or two, or very often, there is a burning wire/electrical smell when I open the microwave.
Sometimes it won't make this sound at all - and sometimes it will make it enough that I'm not comfortable operating the thing. So basically if we're heating something we just stand right by the microwave to make sure that we can stop it in a timely manner if it starts doing that. In fact, maybe I'll start standing around the corner from it because I feel that this may develop into a safety issue. I'm out of warranty anyway and figured that it would be more expensive to repair than to replace; from the rest of these poor people's experience, it sounds like it would be not worth the trouble/money even if it WERE still under warranty.
I bought it for $80-$90 at Walmart, not the cheapest but not the most expensive there. We purchased it for the slightly larger cabin space, and for slightly larger than the lowest wattage, because for a long time at my parents' house, we had this old microwave that was given to my parents as a gift when I was a baby, to help heat my bottles easily (I'm 24 now) and it took forever to heat food. We eventually got rid of it maybe 5 years ago either for that reason or because it started not having a problem running with the door open - which of course isn't right, but I mean, you'd have to be stupid to LET it run with the door open, so whatever.
Even though my microwave still heats my food, and doesn't ALWAYS make the buzzing and da-glo yellow, and it hasn't spontaneously combusted as have the microwaves of some people on this forum, I AM NOT fully comfortable operating it and would like to get a new microwave when it is a financial possibility or if this one gets worse. I know after reading these posts that I WILL NOT buy a GE, which I was comfortable buying because it has generally been a well-respected brand. I'm not sure what brand of new microwave I will get.
I'm almost tempted to get one of the old ones at a garage sale because even though they take a long time to heat food, they're probably safer than this new piece of poo I seem to have bought. And as I said before, though it took forever to cook stuff, my mom's microwave that she had before the one she has now lasted for like 20 years. THAT is the kind of performance I am looking for. Fortunately, no one has been injured with this appliance but as I said, I'm not totally comfortable continuing to operate it as it is, because it's obviously not a normal thing for a microwave to do. I just want it to heat my food and not break only a year and a half after I bought it new, is that so much to ask from ANY brand?

When we called Sears, they instructed us to call GE; GE would assist us in getting the replacement for the defective product.
We called GE Consumer Relations number (800-386-1215) and spoke to Adrian. She said that this is an installation problem, but they will send someone out to inspect it. The first appointment they missed and rescheduled. The second appointment was also rescheduled. Between 9-11-08 and 10-04-08, they continued to reschedule, and they missed the last scheduled appointment on 10-4-08. We did not hear back from them since 10-4-08.
We called on 10-14-08 and spoke to Adrian again who told us that this is an installation issue--not a defective product. When I asked how they determined their decision without inspection, she refused to provide a reasonable answer and would not say or offer anything else. I asked her supervisor, and Rude Peggy answered. Without any introduction, she flat out refused to offer any help. And in a sarcastic manner, she replied, "Oh yes, we do stand behind our products. Do whatever you wish." When I asked for their address to send legal documents, she refused to provide an address or any further information including her last name.
Because of their repeated delays in scheduling, I lost my 30 day return policy with Sears. The microwave works, but it is a safety issue to install it with 2 of the 3 possible contact points. This is clearly a manufacturing defect that GE refuses to take responsibility for and provide its consumer with any recourse.

It kept overheating and would just shut off. I decided to call GE to schedule a service call. They told me that I would not have to pay for the $99.00 service call, why I haven't a clue.
They came today, and the tech had to replace the Motor Part # WB26X10105, (Motor Mag Fan Assy), and would cost me a grand total of $305.48 - labor cost of $174.95, which the tech wasn’t here even, and $106.60 for the part, and of course tax. I called GE and put in a formal complaint about their product. They said they were sorry and noted the complaint. Other than their sorry, NOTHING would they deduct from my bill. The microwave was here when we moved in 6 1/2 years ago and I know it wasn't new then. This is the first time we had trouble. I read these reviews and even considered just getting a new microwave. Expecting the same experience everyone else had, I tried to save some time and told the woman who took my call that it was the magnatron tube and I would like to have the service man bring one with him so I didn't have to have 2 visits. The only complaint I do have is with the woman on the phone. She was rude, tried to give me an 8 hour window for the repairman and told me he would have the magnatron tube with him. Turns out, if it is a magnatron tube, they need 2 people to get the microwave out so it wasn't possible to do in 1 visit. They need 1 visit to diagnose and the other to repair.
The service man was wonderful and explained everything to me. He explained that the parts would be shipped directly to me and why, put me for the first visit the following week and showed up on time and did his work quickly and efficiently. The parts were here in a few days. I had no problems at all. Just wanted to give people a little hope if they are debating repair vs buying a new one. The magnatron tube was under warranty even though I didn't have a receipt. My microwave was manufactured in 1999. I did have to pay for service which was $187. The initial fee for them coming out was covered in the repair. I think it was $80 something if I decided not to have them repair it. Good experience out here in the Philadelphia suburbs. Thanks!

Two days ago while using the microwave for microwave popcorn, i heard a strange noise and observed sparks coming from the sides of the microwave. from that point, it stopped working. I contacted the ge service repair and scheduled a service call.
today, the repairman told me that the magnetrob tube had to be replaced and the total cost would be $381.11. For a microwave that is less than two years old and only had a one year warranty i felt this amount was outrageous. not only that but i had to pay for a service call in the amount of $69.95 for him to tell me that it will cost me $381.11 to fix the problem. this is disgusting and an outrage for consumers like me. i will never but a ge product again.

I have a GE microwave oven, over the range, model JVM 1851 Spacemaker XL1800. This is the model the builder installed, came with the house (brand new). After only 3 yrs the magnetron tube had to be replaced. Now, 2 yrs later, the unit isn't heating again and the magnetron tube may need to be replaced again (twice in 5 years!). My GE side by side refrigerator had to be replaced as well after 5 yrs new, and my GE Nautilus dishwasher leaks. What gives? I advise everyone I know not to purchase any GE appliances. This is out of control.
The technician advised not to repair the refrigerator. The freezer door was leaking from the inside and a new door would cost $650. Aside from this, the refrigerator was no longer cooling and died 2 days later. I had to buy a new refrigerator. I'm hoping the current issue with the microwave oven is the magnetron tube since it is covered for ten years under warranty. I will need to pay for my second service call for the microwave. The technician for the dishwasher advised that the door needed to be replaced and would cost $200. He tightened the door as much as possible and I'm living with the leak.

I have a GE spacemaker microwave. Twice the handle has broken off when I simply opened the door. One look at the broken handle and it is clearly a design flaw to attach the stress-bearing handle to a door with such a thin rod of plastic. I argued that because it is a design flaw GE should send me a new handle free; one should normally expect a handle to last the life of the product. They sent me a free handle once (same exact design) but not this time.
It is unfortunate that this kind of problem will prevent me from buying another GE product because the microwave has otherwise operated flawlessly. However, I need to know a manufacturer will address design flaws without seeking to profit from the remedy.

microwave blew up! Heating butter, Baby bottles, eyebrow wax make the microwave spark from the side metal plate in the microwave, shooting blinding light, and electric shorting out noise. The metal plate in the microwave now has a hole in it from it going crazy. It came installed in my doublewide, brand new. The problem didn't occur until after warrenty had expired. Go figure.
since the micro isn't under warrenty, I have to buy a new one. The only damage done was to the microwave itself, thank goodness.

I was given Microwave/Convection JES1290SK by my daughters. Eight months later it stopped working. Unplugged IT and plugged it in once more and it started up again. Now 18 months later, it has stopped working completely. It is totally unresponsive to anything we have tried. Even had a couple of other individuals look it over.
GE Consumer Services said I would have to pay $99.95 for someone to LOOK at it only and tell me what the problem was. I would have to pay for parts and labor. They refused to give an estimate of what labor cost and parts cost would be and let me know in no uncertain terms that I would be responsible for those costs. They claimed not to know what parts were needed, yet, when I asked if it was possibly a fuse, they suddenly became knowledgeable about the fact that it was definitely not a fuse.
I made an appointment for a repair man to look at it, but after reading all the complaints listed, I think I will cancel it. After a cost of $400 plus for the oven, and being aware of what repair costs are in New York City, I have no choice but to suck this up or I will be paying close to the original cost of the oven for repair service -and for how long will it function? Another 6 months?
A unit costing this much should not burn out after 1-1/2 years. It is not right that I should have this big expense after such a short time. I am very angry and feel that I have been taken advantage of since GE obviously knows they are turning out very inferior products. I do wish we had read the reviews before purchasing this piece of junk. We have learned an expensive lesson...NEVER AGAIN BUY A GE PRODUCT!

Got on line to see what I could find out and, WOW, did I get educated. Called back and GE siad the unit was out of warranty and that there was no recall. Tried to reason with them but this was an exercise in futility. GE is NOT a company we will use in the future and we will tell EVERYONE about the problems we have had with their product, and how poor their service was. This, along with everyone elses notice will eventually put them out of business for their lack of empathy or pride of workmanship. If I treated my cleints and customers in the same way, then I'd be out of business in months!

Our GE Sensor mirowave Model JES1351WB almost caught our whole kitchen on fire! My neice placed a large frozen bagel on a paper plate and pushed the defrost button, walked into the other room, 60 seconds later black smoke poured out of the top of the microwave. I got up from 12 feet away and we opened the microwave to see flames. We had to get a fire extinguisher to put out the blackened bagel and finally the fire department came to help us remove the microwave. It was plugged in behind a heavy microwave hutch filled with dishes and canned food, so it was not easy to unplug the unit immediately.
Now the yellow extinguisher powder has left an irritating coating on everything (inside of closed cupboards included), and we have nasty smoke damage in the living room carpet and furniture. Our insurance company will not pay for the cleanup and I am disabled. My niece has since gone home to another state, my daughter had to be treated for smoke and extinguisher chemical inhalation at the hospital, and she cannot help me clean up because she is asthmatic and the chemical dust triggers another attack. What a nightmare! I have to wash every single dish and dust every single cupboard and container of food in my entire kitchen now! I cannot even go in there. I am so overwhelmed.

We moved into a new home Build by Pulte Homes in a area known as Serrano. In El Dorado Hills, California. All the appliances came templated by the hundreds of Pulte Build Homes. Pre-installed are all General Electric Appliances.
The Built-in microwave now has a f3 error. It has been absolutely annoying to beep every 30 seconds for the past four days in our house. I have turned the power to the whole house off and it seems to be on a different breaker. There is NO Way to see a power off switch either in the Breaker or on the Microwave. There are no instructions from PULTE homes to turn off the microwave or to find out where the plug is on the built in Microwave.
Annoying beeping sound. for 4 days. No access to a power off switch. The GE Alliance person said they can come out in 5 days. It is still under warranty but the GE Appliance person is still not here.

Purchased a new GE Spacemaker in Feb. 2002. The turntable motor quit after a year & a half (of course, it would have to be after the mfg. warranty had expired). It's now Aug. 2008...I'm now trying to find a new motor for it(tired of hearing the grinding noise if I forget to run it without turning the turntable off) and wondering (after reading all the other complaints on these models), if I should just bite the bullet and buy a different one (although a new motor is about $40.). I would definitely stay away from a GE model though.
I owned an Amana Microwave prior to this unit, for over 20 years...not once did I ever have a problem with it.
Whatever happened to Quality Control with GE...did they take a permanent vacation????

I purchased three GE appliances (refrigerator, electric Range and microwave) The fridge in 2005 and the Range and microwave in 2006. All three appliances stopped working and had to have replacement parts. GE tried to make us pay for the repairs to the fridge in 2007 even though they knew there was an existing problem with the water dispenser and even designed a part to fix the issue. I was on the phone with a GE Rep for several hours explaining that we should not have to pay for a part that the company knew was defective. The heating element burned completely in half in 2007 and we had to order a new one which cost $75.00 plus shipping and handling.
The Spacemaker microwave stopped working (not heating) this month due to the magnetron tube. I complained to the Better Business Bureau and received a call from Ms. C. from GE that they would pay for the service call and parts but that I would have to pay for the labor. The technician came out today for five minutes and said that the tube needed replacing and that the labor would be $100.00. I asked him how long it would take to replace the tube and he said anywhere from 30 - 45 minutes. I consider that a hefty labor charge for less than 1 hour of work. He said that if I paid for parts, visit and labor the total would be approximately $300.00. He said it would be cheaper to buy a new microwave. I would have to agree.
Therefore, I have concluded that not only is GE Appliance making alot of money from their products, but also from their service calls. Their products are not reliable. I will not buy another GE product. GE is also overcharging for visits. Especially appliances that are just a couple of years old. As Ms. C. at GE stated, "we will just have to agree to disagree". I'm having to pay $100.00 for labor when is only taking 30 or 45 min to replace a tube. That is outrageous. The appliance is only 2 years old.

I bought an over the stove microwave on Feb 28, 2008 and installed it the middle of April, 2008. Around the third week of June I noticed a smell whenever I used the microwave. The smell got worse with each use and within a couple weeks I was unable to use the microwave. I called for service and they sent someone out within the week.
The technician arrived on July 7th, 2008 and thats when the real problem started. The technician said he would order the parts and they would be shipped to me and he would return the following Monday to put the parts in. However, I had to take the microwave off the wall for him to work on it.
I had not received the parts by Friday, July 11, 2008, I called GE again and was told that I was not on the schedule as they had one of the parts but that the magnetron tube was on backorder with no estimated date of arrival. I stated that this was unacceptable and that if they couldn't fix it they need to replace it. The customer service representative then told me to call the next day as the parts could come in and be shipped and would be here on time. I called on Saturday only to find that all I got was an automated response. The automated response indicated that I was scheduled for service as promised, so we took the microwave off the wall.
The following morning, Monday, July 14, 2008 I received an automated call at approximately 7:45 AM that stated I was the next service call. I waited until 10 AM, then called to find out what the delay was. At that point I was informed that there was no service as the parts were not in and still not estimated date of arrival. She said she would check into it and call me back. I contact another customer service rep at noon and was again told they had no estimated date of arrival for the parts.
She suggested I contact a different division of the customer service, when I demanded that something be done to rectify this problem. When I called the other division, I was told they had an estimated date for the parts to arrive as July 25th. I stated that waiting another two to three weeks with the microwave taking up a large portion of my counter was unacceptable. As this representative was uncooperative and somewhat rude in her responses, I hung up on her and called back to speak to someone else. This representative said she looked it up and that the parts were due in on July 18th. When I questioned the fact that with four different people supposedly looking at the same computer screen there were three different answers, she said that this was what her computer said and that it was the best she could do.
I contacted the store where I bought the microwave, Lowes and explained the problem to them. Since I bought this particular microwave based on their recommendation, I ask if they could help. I was told that there was nothing they could do but they would make a call and see if they could find out any additional information. They called back to tell me there was nothing they could do and that they had gotten the same response I had already received.
At 3 PM I received a call from someone who identified himself as the GE repairman and he informed me that the regular guy had called in sick and so he was doing double the work and he wasnt sure when or if he could get to my place that day. After some discussion with him whining about how it was already 3 PM and he had not even had lunch yet, etc, I ask if he had the parts. He told me they were to be shipped to me and I should have them. When I explained the situation he said he just wanted to let me know he might be late or not get there and that he didnt know what to do about the parts. I finally told him if he did not have the parts, it would be useless for him to come by as he couldnt make the repairs anyway.
On July 24th, 2008 I received a call from A-1 Delivery Service. I was ask to set up an appointment to deliver my microwave. I ask if this was a new or reconditioned microwave and was told it was new. The appointment was set for Tuesday July 29th, 2008. On Monday, July 28th, 2008 A-1 Delivery called again to give me a set timeframe of before noon for the delivery.
On Tuesday I waited until almost 1PM before I called to see if there was a problem as the delivery had not yet arrived. I was told I was the next stop and they arrived shortly thereafter. However, once again there was a problem. The driver/installer informed me that the microwave was the wrong color. I told him to install it anyway as I didnt want to wait any longer. He started telling me that they could have the white one out on Friday morning, that since my other appliances were all white. I stated that I really didnt want to wait any longer, but he said since I had a white one and that I might want to match all the appliances, and it would only be 3 days. When I expressed concern about the fact that I didnt want to waste another day waiting for a delivery, he promised to deliver it before 8 AM. He said that they made their deliveries to the desert early so they could get out of the heat and that his first delivery that day had been in Indio at 6:40 AM. I finally agreed to let them bring a white one on Friday, August 1st, 2008.
On August 1, 2008 I got up early to make sure I was ready for the delivery. However, once again I was disappointed. I called A-1 Delivery at 8 AM to see when they would be here only to be informed that they wouldnt be making the delivery. Once again I had been lied to. When I spoke to Campos at A-1 Delivery he said the only way to order a different unit was if the one they delivered was damaged.
As it was never taken out of the box, I am quite sure it was not damaged. He stated that they did not re-order for a color change. It appears that I was put off once again by GE in an effort to keep me from calling my lawyer. With the effort the delivery guy put into convincing me to wait three days for the white one, I am suspicious about their involvement as well. At this time I still do not have a working microwave, but a box from GE arrived the day after the driver convinced me to wait for the right color. No one has contacted me about any repairs and at this point I am sure there must be so many problems with this unit that I worry I will have more issues even if it gets fixed. After all why would there be such a backlog on parts for a unit that was manufactured in January 2008??
The last conversation I had with anyone was with Campos at A-1 Delivery at approximately 9:30 AM today (August 1, 2008). At that time he said he had sent an email to GE, [after he told me he was going to call them when I spoke to him at 8 AM this morning] and that he would send another.
Since this began I have been lied to, put off and just plain ignored. Why is it such a problem to simply fulfill a warranty promise??
Extra cost of gas to cook with, which created more heat, therefore causing extra use of electricity for cooling unit to maintain a comfortable temperature in my home. Inability to utilize kitchen to fullest extent due to space required on counter for defective unit. Not to mention the stress and frustration I feel in trying to deal with this situation
