I bought a GE Model JES1358WL01 Microwave in March, and by June it quit heating. Everything looked like it was working, but food came out as cold as it went in.

Since I did not have the box (like most people, I had already recycled it), and just my luck I had misplaced the receipt, I was only allowed to return it for the exact same model. After seeing other complaints for the same issue, I fear I will be out of luck when this one fails!

GE countertop microwave oven JES1136WK 01 manufactored April 2006 was purchased May 2006 and malfunctioned November 2007. Was cooking in oven when I heard an awful noise and smelled what seemed to be an electrical fire. I rushed to the unit and immediately unplugged it from the wall. I waited several minutes before removing what I was cooking and was amazed to find the interior right wall (behind the keypad) blown out. I used the unit at least once a day every day for 18 months with no problems. I had absolutely no warning that it was not working properly. Had I not been in the room with the oven I can only imagine what might have resulted; however, I was able to unplug the unit. It inconvenienced our family for a short period while shopping for a replacement oven.

My fiance just sold his house (so that we can get one together), which contains a built-in GE Spacemaker XL microwave. When the house was inspected, we were told we needed to replace the surface area bulbs on the bottom of the microwave. Last week we packed up the house because my boyfriend is spending the next seven weeks teaching outside the country. So, I am left to take care of these minor things, and I've replaced the bulbs. But now the lights won't go off.

This is set up with a bright setting, which I assume would have both bulbs on, a night light setting, which I assume would leave one light on, and an off setting. Although the panel on the front of the microwave cycles through the settings, there's no change to the lights--they both stay on. I have to turn off the circuit for them to go off. It seems as though the entire electronic circuitry of these microwaves is messed up big time.

I guess that I'm going to have to go out and buy a brand new microwave and pay to have someone install it since my boyfriend is out of the country. It won't be another GE.

Purchased a JVM1540LM2CS over-the-range microwave from a scratch-and-dent store. Within a week, the vent fan was going on, all by itself, all times of the day and night. Press the button, it stays on. Have to flip the breaker switch. Called GE, nasty lady sez $80 to look at it. Yeah, right, GE.

Unscrewed the top screws, took the vent cover off, there's a screw above the keypad, took that off, and there are instructions tucked in the bottom of the keypad for service people. Obviously, a short in the relay. Clipped the wire, put it back in, well, I can't use the vent fan anymore but it won't matter because I'll never buy GE anymore. Hope to save some of you at least $80.

I was steaming crabs on the stove and put a dish of butter in the microwave to melt it. After several seconds of operation there was a flash and loud explosion. The plastic vent above the door was broken in the explosion and the carousel stopped turning. The carousel has not worked since then. I would like GE to get the word out about the potential problems of running the microwave when steam is rising from the stovetop.

I purchased a stainless steel GE 30 micro/hood (Model# JVM1870CH) in 2004, for $500 Adult household with very little microwave use other than the occassional warm ups 2-3 times a week. No cooking on a daily basis. Microwave will no longer heat. GE Service call is $99.95 plus any parts and/or labor. It would cost as much as buying a new microwave.

In April, 2008, our new microwave started to malfunction --shutting down after only a few seconds. We called a technician who removed it and later informed us that the magnatron was defective and that repairing it would cost as much as buying a new microwave. I had a GE Spacesaver microwave installed in my kitchen about 6 year ago. The model number is JVM1842BD001. Soon after installation we had a annoying problem. After pulling out the heated food and closing the door, the light would come on and the microwave start on it own. To stop it, you have to open the door and close it again. That usually works. OK, annoying but I learned to live with it.

just this past month, a different problem. The door handle broke. I searched the web for instructions on how to remove the handle. It is hard to find much. Couldn't GE at least give you detailed instructions on their web site? Any way with much trial and error I figured out how to get to the screws to remove it. I just ordered a replacement handle. Including shipping, this will cost me about $44 dollars.

We bought this house in October and the kitchen comes with a full line of cheap GE appliances. The GE Spacemaker microwave caught fire after a month when there was an arc between the metal interior shelf and the side of the microwave. Luckily we were standing right there and turned the microwave off before it got out of control. It left a nice scorch mark though. I took the shelf out and we kept using it. Then I am guessing the magnitron went bad from what I have read. It would got for two seconds and then shut off and then you would have to reset everything. I was going to see if I could just get it repaired, but after reading all the bad about these microwaves. I don't want to risk it and throw good money after bad. Thanks to all who have written in on all these sites. You have saved us some money.

I plan on going to Lowe's or Home Depot and finding a brand not associated with GE.

GE Profile Built-In Microwave/Convection Oven Model: JEB1095SB002 Two magnetron burnouts in 11 months. We are resale owners of this house. We have lived here just over 1 year. This will be our 2nd microwave repair. This microwave had burn spots all over the metal plate on the back wall of the microwave. And the paint is peeling on the floor of the microwave. We are normal users- reheating food, defrosting meat, occassional microwave popcorn. The house and microwave are only 4 years old! What a lemon.

Interestingly, the magnetron part is under warranty- but the service call is over $200! (We live in Northern NJ). That's $400 out the window in less than a year for a faulty product. It will be cheaper to just buy another brand.

The heating element has gone out and I spent a lot of time on the phone with GE and they told me that I bought a product that I need to take back to the place where I bought it and most places will only accept returns for a couple months. So I said basically all I can do is buy a new microwave and she said yes.

I told her I wasn't going to buy a GE and she said 'we hate to lose you' well, then make products that last more than a year. We've had microwaves that have lasted over 20 years. We are a family of 6 and can't afford to buy a microwave every year.

We have used our previous microwave in the same manner, just normal family use popcorn, soup, reheating small quantiest, drinks for a number of years and only upgraded because of the look. We like the look of this unit (JES1036), but unfornately it is not a quality made product -- we got in Dec. 2007 Cleareance Unopened item from WALMART and it only made it now.

A few months ago my GE Spacesaver Microwave Oven burned out (2nd time, under warranty). Unit is still like new, gently used. The magnetron had to be replaced again (cost over $150, labor and service call, part under the warranty replaced at no charge). I was very upset and complained LOUDLY to GE. I said I was going to replace the part myself, and ordered and received it.

I was advised by several knowledgeable folks I should not attempt the job, due to dangers involved. I decided to send magnetron back for credit, which I did. I just had the GE serviceman do the job and microwave is again doing just fine. My reason for writing this now is to tell everybody to check closely in the instruction book that came with their microwave and they will find a paragraph that tells them NOT TO OPERATE THE OVEN WITHOUT ANYTHING IN IT for more than a minute or two or the oven may overheat and the magnetron BURN OUT! I think most people don't see this, because it is NOT set out with a clear CAUTION or WARNING heading, and it SHOULD be the first thing listed!

During the years I was working, we often had microwaves go out because people heated popcorn in the oven. The stink remained in the area for a long time. I guess they used the wrong type popcorn, or wrong type of popping container. I think maybe the magnetrons might not be as poorly designed or made as people think. I was in electronics many years, and the unit they shipped to me was very high quality. I know I will be extra careful from now on. I've put a warning both inside and outside on my unit. Thanks for your time.

I installed a built-in GE Profile Microwave/Convection oven in November 2005 (Model JEB1095SB002). A week ago, the exterior glass door shattered. It was not in use; no-one was even home when it happened. GE Customer Service took a week to schedule a call, then actually read the description of the complaint and called the day before the call to ask if I was prepared to pay $475 for a new door plus $160 for labor, and of course it would take an additional week to order the part.

Further, the technician argued it could not POSSIBLY be a mechanical fault because the interior glass would also be shattered. He implied I wasn't telling the whole story. I cancelled the service call, and will NOT be replacing the unit with anything made by or for GE.

The unit cost me around $1,000 2 years ago, and a similar replacement will now be $1500.

I have a complaint about a GE Profile Microwave-Oven Combo that is made of extremely inferior quality material. The paint inside the microwave is not heat-resistant and it has been peeling and rusting the interior for a long time. The inside of the microwave has been stripped of paint, the inside metal exposed, and it occasionally sparks, which is a huge fire hazard. To make matters worse, GE recently recalled this model because of a faulty electric design. A service rep came to fix the recalled circuit in Dec 07. He dismissed the microwave rust as normal, and said his job was to fix the recall piece only. The turntable plate does not rotate due to the rust, and yet GE prefers to call this normal wear and tear!

I contacted Customer Service again in May 08. This time the service rep said the unit was definitely non-repairable and that it should have been replaced long time ago. He assured us that Customer Service would expedite the process of replacing the unit. No one called back. When I called Customer Service, they could not find my case, then they could not locate the notes by the technician, and finally they wanted to dismiss the case by saying this should be handled by the recall division. The agent did not even want to know the details of the case, and it took several frustrating attempts before he could understand the situation. He informed me that since the unit was old (I didn't know that GE Profile appliances had a life expectancy of only 5 yrs!), they would give me a prorated 40% discount on a new unit, which is their policy for replacing units with normal wear and tear; take it or leave it!

It is sad to see so much arrogance by GE Customer Service about replacing their faulty, defective appliances at no cost, WHEN THEY ARE AT FAULT! One would expect a reputable company such as GE to graciously concede their mistake and make that extra effort to retain existing customers. Such swindling tactics does not befit a reputable company such as GE.

Within 2 years, the magnatron went out. Turned out GE has a 10 year warranty on the tube but charged $160 for a service call to replace it - which we did. Within 2 years, the tube again needed to be replaced. After many calls to GE and assurances that the problem had been resolved, we purchased a new microwave from them. It was the same model (only one that could fit in the built in cabinet). That was in May of 2006 and in May of 2008 it again broke.

This part was ordered and delivered in a week, and we have been waiting for another week until April 25, when other two repair men have come.

On April 25, these two men made a lot of mess in the kitchen, could not repair the microwave, and told us that they needed another part to be delivered and replaced. We have been waiting for another week until May 2. On this day, they finally have got some positive result, once again making a lot of mess in the kitchen, behaving very rudely and impolitely. One of repair men was named Simon, he is a Russian speaking person, and my wife speaks Russian, and her English is not so well. She was trying to communicate with Simon in Russian, but he refused to do so, and pretended that he doesn't understand her. I had to take two days off at my own expense in order to help my non-English speaking wife to communicate with the Russian-speaking repair man, Simon. He is very rude and unapproachable. It is very difficult to call and reach a person in charge at GE Customer Relations.

Loss of two working days for waiting repair men from GE Appliances. A lot of mess and dirt in the kitchen, because of using a kitchen table for fixing microwave. Waiting for three weeks for a microwave repair. The repair men did not leave any paper about their work.

At this point, their is no physical damage to my unit. However, it is going to cost me a $89 service fee to have someone come out to tell me the magnetron is faulty on my unit (as it is with thousands others that I read on this website). They are also going to charge me for labor, but they won't give me an answer as to what that will be. The consumer relations person at GE (said her name was Adora) could care less about my complaints, said she had no knowledge of any problems, and the product was not under recall.

I advised her of the consumer affairs website and she told me (with sincerity which is scary) that anyone can put anything on a website and they have no knowledge of any problems. The funny thing is, when I told her how I felt the issue was the magnetron, she new exactly what I was talking about and told me the part would be covered, just not the call or labor. What a scam!

All microwaves are made by Sharp (so our distaste of GE wouldn't matter if we change to Fridigaire or another brand). Microwaves that serve multiple functions (especially over the range one since they serve as a light, vent, as well as mw) are more prone to go out after 4 years.

And we just had a new gas cooktop from GE. Guess what, the grate is too high and the flames do not get to the bottom of the pans! It took like 7 minutes to cook some eggs. I will not buy one more GE appliance in my life from now on. I thought GE used to pride themselves as either #1 or #2 in a market. We battled this huge frustration for several months (the rest of 2007) than began using an old 'cheap' counter top microwave. My wife suggested it was time to fix, replace, or do something. I agreed finally.

I scheduled an appointment with GE online agreeing to a ridiculous $84.95 service call. The GE repairman arrived not so promptly. I must state he was very polite and he apologized for our long wait. He said he was very busy with calls. He powered the microwave on while I was explaining the problem to him and within FOUR SECONDS he told me what was wrong. He said, It is the Magnetron, it's leaking. I said, The what?. He pointed it out to me and said the Magnetron is the heating element and that it was leaking and interfering with the circuitry causing the failure. Long story summed up. A quick trip to his service van and back he handed me an estimate for $254.90. That would include the service call of course. He did say the part is still covered but not the labor. He said it would take about 30 minutes if I wanted it repaired. But, the labor would only be guaranteed for 30 days. $255.00 for a repair guaranteed for 30 days? What a scam! What a travesty to the long ago and once held GE excellence in product and service. I took the $84.95 loss for a bad / good learning experience.

Our 1st GE Profile Spacemaker Microwave worked well for quite a few years, only problem was cracking of the plastic front door and handle. Replacement parts cracked in a similar way within a year of installation. Thirteen months ago we replaced the older unit with a model in Stainless; it worked well during the one-year warranty period. Now it is shutting itself down at random during cooking. We have to switch the breaker off and on to reboot it, then it works normally for a time or two before quitting again. It is very likely that the cost of a service call, then repair to the electronics, will exceed the price of a new microwave.

Even if the problem is with the magnetron which is covered for parts for 5 years, the combined cost of a diagnostics visit and the magnetron repair labor (not covered) will be more than buying a new one. The moral: If you like the GE Spacemaker, fine, but be willing to pay up front for an extended warranty policy (and read the fine print to make sure that it really protects you). Or be prepared to buy a new one everyone year or two.

No damage just a partly functional appliance which is a big nuisance, and the prospect of having to buy a new microwave every year of two. I should only have to budget maybe $80/year to have a nice microwave, with the GE Profile it could be as high as $500/year.

I was using the Sensor feature. I sat down and was reading my paper and noticed the microwave had smoke billowing out of the top. When I opened it (which I know now I was not supposed to) the potato and paper plate were on fire. Flames were shooting from the food. I took a towel and put the fire out. Now my house smells like fire. I'm afraid to use the microwave again. I will be calling GE tomorrow, but my microwave was manufactured in Feb 2004 - so I'm out of warranty. As far as I'm concerned, I want it out of my house. I also live in a townhome building and we all have the same appliances. I'm afraid someone else will blow up their house and mine along with it. I will be bringing this up at the townhome meeting.

I'm on line trying to find out how to get fire smoke out of my house. My house smells like there was a fire (which there was). I don't know how to get the smell out and besides who knows we are breathing. It's 5 below zero and I have the windows open. So I'm losing heat as well.

We purchased GE Spacemaker XL 1800 on 2/2002, from Jamesburg Hardware. I made a potato, using the potato switch and it caught fire.

The unit is ruined. It probably is the magnetron, based upon reports from other people. It would cost $85 for a service call, plus $180 to service the magnetron. It is not worth it.

We also purchased the GE JVM 1650 Microwave. It was purchased in 2000. It was made in 1999. Since that time, we have put in three magnetrons. We have paid for the labor. Yes, the magnetron is covered for 10 years, but labor is not. It's probably a lot cheaper to buy the magnetron than the labor. However, we would think that GE would back their product just a bit. When we first purchased, they said yes there was a problem with the magnetron. It was covered. I would think that if the problem is as far back as 1999 the compnay would have fixed the problem already?

We called a local GE repairman to look at our not quite 3 yr. old spacemaker microwave oven as it was suddely very loud, and not heating. He came out, and then told us to call GE direct as it was the magnatron tube, and that is covered under warranty. We paid him his $54.00 service fee. We then called GE and they arranged for someone to come out a week later, explaining to them that it was the magnatron tube, so to be sure the repairman had a replacement with him. They told us that there would be a service fee of $74.95, plus whatever labor the repairman deemed necessary, but that the magnatron tube was free.

The GE repairman was supposed to arrive on 1/15/08 between the hours of 1-5 pm. My husband took off work to be here. At precisely 4:59 pm the phone rang. It was the GE serviceman, telling us he will be here in a few minutes. Fifteen minutes later he arrived, totally unaware that we needed a magnatron tube, even though GE assured us that our serviceman would be apprised of the situation. He searched his inventory and found one. He then told us that we would have to pay him the $74.95 service fee PLUS $179.00 in labor! We told him that he could just leave because we would not allow anyone to take advantage of us like that. (It was obvious that they were covering the cost of the free magnatron tube!) GE should be forced to correct the problem with their faulty product. This microwave isn't even quite 3 yrs. old and it is worthless.

My microwave arced, burning a pencil-eraser sized hole in a plastic dish cover contained within (model #JE1660WB). After this incident, microwave would not heat. This is apparently a common problem with GE microwaves, as there are countless reports to be found online reporting similar experiences. While GE warranties the magnetron for 10 years, the cost of labor is the responsibility of the consumer, a cost that exceeds the original price of the unit. Therefore, I have filed a formal complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission effective 1/3/08. This is especially frustrating as my GE dishwasher (Model # GSD5130D00WW, Serial # AZ2867619B) stopped working literally hours before the microwave arced. While the dishwasher repair is covered by a recall, the repair is handled by A&E Factory Repair, a company that is notorious for no-shows, rudeness, and lengthy waits for completed work (on the order of several months in many cases). Given the questionable reliance of GE appliances, along with an almost non-existent customer support structure, I will go to any means necessary to avoid GE appliances in the future. I urge anyone who has had trouble with GE appliances to file a formal complaint with the CPSC at www.cpsc.gov. In addition, make your family safer by avoiding the use of GE appliances in your home.

I asked if they would replace the microwave since we have had all these problems, and they refused to replace it.

The last problem we had was MAJOR! I was heating something in the microwave that was mounted above our stove, and I had noticed it was taking longer and longer for things to heat. I assumed it was the heating element AGAIN! I walked up to the microwave to see if what I was heating was boiling, and just as I did the door burst open, hot liquid flying everywhere. Call it bad timing, but the door hit me right in the face bruising my nose and busted both my lips open, not to mention the burns from the liquid. I documented everything with pictures and Dr.'s notes.

I called GE and could not believe what they were about to tell me. The customer service rep. asked me what were you doing standing right in front of the microwave? I have the same microwave and I can see what's in there from across the room since there is a light in the microwave I told her it didn't matter what I was doing standing there; the thing is mounted over my stove. What if I was cooking? Bottom line: they did nothing! I asked for a replacement, but they refused, telling me they would sell me one at a discounted price. I missed 2-1/2 hours of work and finally the technician arrived. He opened his laptop, looked it up and told me the part was free. BUT, then he said it would cost me $269.00 to repair! I almost fainted. That is the price of new microwave!! I argued that they told me it was $89.95 and said that was just for him to come here and then there would be a $179.00 labor charge in addition. I told him to leave. I then called Sears repair service. They said if I get the part, they will charge a trip charge but that will be deducted from the actual labor charge for repair. I said that sounds fair as opposed to GE charging $89.98 PLUS LABOR and not deducting anything. Sears suggested I call and order the part and then call them to come out to put in the part. I called GE again and was told they could not send me that part, it could only be done through the service department. I was infuriated. I told them I did not want their service department because it was a rip-off -- I just want the part!! They told me they could not do that. I said I wish to file a formal complaint. Now I have been referred to the Resolution Department which I will call tomorrow as they are now closed. I intend to pursue this matter further.

I am still without a working microwave and will call the so-called Resolution Department tomorrow in an attempt to get the part sent to me. The repair man was only in the house for 20 minutes. Now less than 2 years later, the same 10 year warranty part (the magnetron) needed to be replaced again. This time the repair man came out to do the repair on 12-11-07 and again it took 20 minutes. This time I was charged $181.85. While the repair man was at my house, he told me our dishwasher had a recall, so he called and an appointment was made to fix that, although since it is a recall, there should be no charges, I will again need to take off work to have that work done. I have invested much time just trying to get through to GE, and much money both in lost wages and unreasonable 'labor' charges. Charging a customer that put faith in GE products what has to amount to almost $500.00 an hour for service on covered parts, is robbery. I am disgusted and disappointed in GE products and hope everyone I know hears my story.

I lost 1/2 days of work for both times that I had to be home to replace the same part. After almost 2 months in possession of this microwave I was heating some chicken nuggets on a paper towel in the microwave. I cooked the first batch for 2 minutes and they came out fine.

I cooked a second batch ten minutes later, again for 90 seconds. After the microwave shut off I went to remove the food, but found the temperature of the exterior of the microwave to be several hundred degrees, causing burns on my fingers. The chicken nuggets inside the microwave were hard as a rock and burnt black. The microwave quit functioning after this incident.

As a result of the first incident the fire department had to respond to my residence. There was smoke damage throughout the ground floor of my residence. Extensive cleaning had to be done, and a great deal of food was ruined and had to be discarded due to smoke damage. Also, money was paid to replace the microwave. The second incident caused physical pain due to the burn on my hand. Had I gone outside or left the microwave unnattended on either occasion my house likely would have been destroyed by fire.

When I inspected the handle mounts I could see where the plastic around the metal screws was melted. The first time this happened GE shipped me a new handle and door which I put on. I am now in the process of getting a second handle and door. What really worries me is the melting plastic. I believe this indicates leaking microwaves which could be extremely unhealthy.

I purchased my home in August 2004 from a bank. The home had been lived in for less than 1 year and had been on the market for about 7 months. Earlier this year, I came home from work and the microwave was on as if it were cooking something. The incident scared me because I knew that no one had been home all day since I left that morning to go to work. And I hadn't used the microwave at all during that morning.

Anyway, I investigated to see if there was anything inside, and of course, there was not. I opened the oven door to check why it was operating and I could not detect why it was running. When I closed the door it continued to run--the turntable turned and the light was illuminated. I tried pressing the stop button to get it to stop, but it would not. After pressing several buttons to try to get the microwave to stop running, I finally unplugged it. That was the only way to get it to stop running. When I plugged it back in, it continued to run. I was left to leaving it unplugged.

Although it apparently was not cooking or heating, I was very concerned that whatever the problem was it could have caused a fire. I contacted GE with the model and serial information and they informed me that the microwave was no longer under warrantee. I asked about getting it repaired and they could only refer me to authorized repair dealers, which were not even within 30 miles of where I live. I asked about other alternatives and they had no other information other than it was not under warrantee. I decided not to have the repairs done because they estimated the costs to start at around $70.00.

This situation could have been very serious if they oven would have had anything inside of it and started on its own. I priced the same type of GE oven at Lowe's and the cost is between $250.00 and $400.00. I really didn't use the microwave that often, and I've pulled out my trusted Panasonic model that I had stored in the garage since I moved. I will certainly refrain from purchasing a GE product, but the model that rests above my stove matches the stove itself.

However, on October 23, 2006 my wife, while making a bag of popcorn, observed the oven sparked and then caught on fire with a flame visible inside the oven compartment on the right side. She called me; I opened the door, and the flame died out. I started it again, and the same thing happened. I then brought the oven back to Best Buy in Woodbury MN (where we bought it) and they had it repaired.

However, while waiting for the repair we found this Consumer Affairs web site when we Googled with the keywords "ge microwave fire." It is clear that others at this web site have experienced fire problems with GE microwave ovens; so, we decided not to accept the oven repair. Best Buy allowed us to "swap out" for an oven made by another company. We called GE Consumer Relations on November 2, 2006 and the person I spoke with (Serreta) indicated there was no recall on the oven. I asked to have it noted that the microwave we purchased had caught on fire.

On November 6, 2006 I wrote a letter to the CEO of Best Buy informing him that his company was selling one brand of microwave oven that had a propensity to catch on fire and suggested that he contact the upper management of GE to see if the problem could be addressed. In the letter I also had a one-page attachment describing both the fire we had and my experience on the Internet -- including finding this ConsumerAffairs.com website. I also copied the letter and attachment to the CEO of GE, to the Office of the Attorney General in MN and to State Farm Insurance (where we insure our home and cars).

The technician called GE and explained that we did not want this unit left in our home and we wanted compensation for the malfunction. We were told that there was nothing GE could do for us because the warranty had expired and we had apparently operated the unit improperly. Count me among the dissatisfied customers who purchased a GE Spacesaver Microwave, model JVM1650SB004. I purchased this unit Jan 2005 and within the first week experienced a shut down while nuking some veggies. At the time I was boiling water on the stove below the unit. Apparently, the steam was too much for the unit to handle which is odd since it is designed to serve as a range hood. When I called customer service they said something to the effect, 'not to worry... let us know if it happens again.”

Two months later, I had the same problem, but was again reassured that this was part of the built in safety feature to prevent major failures. Over the next couple of months I noticed that it was taking longer and longer for things to heat. Eventually the 'reheat' cycle was worthless as the unit would produce an error code message stating this cycle was designed to heat 'single meal' serving sizes... even though I was heating up a small portion of food. Again... I was told this was nothing to worry about and was to prevent overheating.

Finally, just after the 1 yr warranty period expired, the unit stopped working. It would not heat anything as the magnetron failed. A service tech was dispatched and repaired my unit at a 'special rate' of $75 after explaining to me that the cost was so low because there was a known issue with this model. He said that over the course of the last couple years he has replaced 100's if not 1,000s of magnetrons. After reading reports on the web, this indeed is a very common problem. I feel I should not have had to pay for this repair. The part was obviously poorly manufactured and should have been recalled. A quality issue is the last thing I would have suspected from a Company like GE. But then again… my unit was probably made overseas. I just hope the other appliances I purchased for my kitchen remodeling don't suffer the same fate.

There was no outward warning of any kind on the unit warning the consumer. The cost of the repair was almost the same as a new model. The customer service representative talked as if it was common knowlege among GE that if you change a lightbulb without first unplugging the unit, you will burn out the circut board. If such a simple error will cause such catastrophic there should be a warning in the unit near the lighbulb to prevent this error. My father bought the same microwave and the same thing happened to him, but his service tech did not charge them for labor because "the magetron tubes are defective in these microwaves that were manufactured during this time period".

In April 2004, the magnetron tube failed again. Called GE, had them come out and after literally fighting with the woman on the phone, the only thing she would do is reduce the service call fee to $75.00 even though there is a known problem with the magnetron tubes for these microwaves. Fast forward to December 2005, and guess what? The magnetron tube failed AGAIN.

Called GE,asked why this keeps happeing and was told "I can not answer any questions for you. I will be happy to send a service tech out to answer your questions ~ for a fee". I told her to forget it and just send me the part and I will have a local appliance repair man fix it instead of giving the money back to GE. Spoke with the parts department and then demanded to speak with someone who will answer questions about why there is an ongoing problem with these microwaves. I got a very helpful woman (sorry, forgot to take down her name ~ kicking myself now for that) that admitted to me that during the time that my microwave was manufactured, they were put together by an outside company and they are aware that there are multiple ongoing problems with magnetron tube failures.

She offered to have a service tech come out and repair it free of charge and that if in fact it was the magnetron tube again, they may consider replacing the microwave with a new model since it is the third time this same part has failed. Today the tech came and told me that in fact it is the magnetron tube again (big surprise) and he needed to call the office to authorize the free service call. After I told the service tech about my offer of getting it replaced, he let me speak with the GE office. I spoke with Peggy Martinez and I was told that I was never offered a replacement and that there are no known problems with magentron tube failures in these microwaves.

They said the only thing I was offered was the service call free of charge and they will not be replacing it because it is repairable. I asked her what happens when the magnetron tube is no longer covered (9 years from the date of purchase) and it fails again (which we all know it will). Then the part is no longer covered, nor will the labor be covered. I was pretty much told, too bad for you. She consitently ran arond my questions and told me that there was no one above her I could speak with and when questioned about why the woman last week offered the information about the ongoing problems, I was told that the woman lied to me.

It was also implied that I lied about getting the replacment offer, which was incredibly offensive to me. To top it all off, the woman just said there was nothing else she would do for me and proceded to hang up on me.

Could not return it to the store no receipt. I will never purchase another GE product again. Who would think that in five months an $80.00 microwave would stop working. Seems to me you don't care either, because i e-mailed you yesterday and i never received an answer back, also included my phone number. I threw the piece of junk out -- what do i need with, it sure can't heat anything up.

While in use, my over the range GE microwave started making a scraping sound before tripping the circut breaker. I could smell something like rubber burning. Later, it blew the fuse while not in use! Unable to reach GE at the 1-800 number due to never-ending voice mail and being put on hold, I called a repairman who diagnosed Magnetron failure. He said it was "arcing" inside and was a fire hazard.

Purchased GE Microwave November, 2004. December 22, 2005 the microwave seemed to be working but then i realized it was not heating! I pulled out the manual and realized i was ONE month over the "one year warranty". I called GE Customer Service today and was told that their could be numerous reasons but if it was the ONE part (magnetron tube) the part would be covered but NOT the service/labor which starts at $69.95.

I am better off buying a new microwave for all the hassle and the fact that the service/labor will probably cost more than a new one. I am upset because they could not give me any direct answers and there is NO reason a microwave i paid over $100.00 for should fail this early. My last microwave lasted me 10 years w/out any issues!

I have the GE Spacemaker XL Microwave oven, purchased in 1998.

In 2002 the turntable stopped working. (The manual) says it will not turn if the probe is installed. This model does not have a probe.

I called their customer service and was told that a service technician could come out for $45 (probably more). I said no.

Eventually it started working again, but I couldn't figure out what series of buttons I had pushed that triggered it, if that was the case.
