HORRIBLE COMMUNICATION. They use 3rd party and don't communicate to you that you need to pay the 3rd party upon delivery. They schedule phone calls and never call and communicate timing and IMPORTANT details. If you choose this company be aware they will say you're getting a discount but you'll be charged $1 a pound. They say normal price would be $3 a pound. I had 7,000lbs of items from Illinois to Phoenix and that would have been $21,000.

Once they have your initial "down payment" they outsource everything and you are talking to other local companies and they basically do not care about you anymore. My point of contact vanished and provided no other information, then I was bounced around to other agents. I'd rate negative stars. Avoid at all costs if you want to guard your peace. Moving is stressful enough and a moving company should be the last of your worries. Go with another do-it-yourself company and save yourself $5,000 for any significant move.

Colonial Van Lines was the first one to call me back when I put in the request for a moving company and the person I talked to convinced me to go with him. When we were doing the inventory, the rep and I went room by room. I told him what I wanted moved and he took it all down. We had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room and a living room. At the end, he told me the cost and it was right on. On moving day, we were prepared and ready to go. There were two guys and they were awesome. They packed everything up, moved it to the truck, and off they went. I was very pleased with Colonial. The reps were very honest and professional, and I would recommend them highly.

My experience with the Colonial rep went very well. The cost was a little higher, though, compared to other companies. I was unaware of the gratuity that I had to pay extra. Also, I had an antique. They call it a lingerie chest. And one of the legs was damaged. I never took a picture and sent it ‘cause I don't know what can be done. But I would still recommend them. They came in, swept it up, and mounted the door there was.

I was not aware when I booked them they are a broker that loads your items and are transferred to another hauler for delivery. I watched the initial listing and packing on site and was satisfied with the load. However, upon delivery a bike wheel was damaged beyond repair. So somewhere between the transferred and delivery it was broken. I told to file a claim and since they only cover damage at $.60 per pound, a $1000 wheel is valued at no more than $100. Terrible customer service for damage claims. They have no idea how to handle delicate items like a high end bike.

In 2024 I moved from Dandridge Tennessee to Hendersonville NC. Unfortunately, I trusted Colonial crew to deliver my household belongings with honesty and care. With sudden loss of my spouse, it has taken me more time to note everything I moved. Things were broken I discovered later and felt disappointed but now as I open a box packed by Colonial, the collector Steven King books, Cujo and the Shinning first addition that are valued at $1200.00 and first addition The shinning valued at $4500.00, are missing. You have thieves. Yes, I could have increased the insurance, but most importantly your workers should be more careful handling home belongings and additionally not take what is not theirs. I trusted your company and your advertised claim of care and respect. It isn't enough to be sorry or tell someone it is unfortunate...it is a crime to steal. Maybe you should talk to your workers about honor and respect. I only gave 1 star...because I had to.

I found Colonial Van Lines on the internet but they were also the recommended van line for RE/MAX, which is who we bought the house through. Colonial had different people contact me from different areas, logistics, packing, and customer satisfaction. I must have been contacted by at least six different departments just to make sure everything was fine. We moved from Tampa, Florida, to Alpharetta, Georgia and setting up the move was very good. The estimate that we finally settled on was exactly what I paid. It was a very positive experience, and I would recommend Colonial.

Colonial Van Lines had a good price and was available when we wanted them. When we called them originally, we had that big blizzard coming through the mid part of the country, which fouled everybody up, but they were able to work with us on it and kept us on schedule, so we were happy with them. They did everything they were supposed to do. The coordinator was on top of it and did a good job. But I got the impression that the people who were running the show behind the scenes versus the people who showed up to do the work were not on the same page. One didn't seem to know what the other one was doing at any given time, but it all worked out. The price was competitive compared to what we had with everybody else and we were pleased with Colonial Van Lines. They were fast, efficient, friendly and easy to work with.

I needed help for a move from Boston to St. Petersburg, Florida, and I was looking through the phone book and the Internet. Colonial Van Lines was a little cheaper than other companies. I was able to talk them down a little bit. The guy was good, but I don't know how truthful he was. He told me that they handle the move directly and don’t use a secondhand. But when the guys came, the truck had a different name on it, and it was a subcontractor. It didn't say Colonial Van Lines. When I finished, I filled out a check to some other company, which is why I think they subbed it out. So, I wasn’t happy with that. I could have hired a secondhand company like them $1,000 cheaper if I had gone that route. But he said his company, Colonial, has been around for 50 years, and he gave me the whole spiel.

The movers called me ahead of time and then, they were on time when they got here to Florida. They were nice but they broke a mirror and a vacuum cleaner. The company called me after and asked how it was, and I told them what happened. They asked if I wanted to file a complaint, but I said no. I didn't even want to bother. Despite this, I ended up paying 150 less than the quote, for some reason.

I did an online search and checked with three different websites that were talking about the best van lines for moving based on various criteria. I checked several of them, and Colonial kept coming up as the second or third on the list. So, I decided to try using them. My account manager was good and she was right on top of things. Because this company was based pretty far away from me, we just did an online estimate. The gentleman that I talked with was amazing, a lot of fun, and very personable. We talked about the things that I had, then he was able to estimate how much it was going to cost. The house is 3,000 square feet with two bedrooms that I moved from, and I moved into a 1,500. It was about half the size. So, not everything came with me.

We talked about the rooms and what furniture was going, and we just went room by room. Then they sent me an email with all of that written up so that I could review that and make sure everything was correct. I had a few days to go over it and communicate any changes if I needed to. And I did. So we altered the list as I had a couple of things I had to add on there. But it all went really smoothly.

Most of the time, I move myself, so I know what it takes and I always try to prepare. This time, I decided to use somebody else, because I've had two surgeries on a foot and it wasn't a great idea to be hauling heavy stuff. So on moving day, I was really hopeful that they would be here on time, and that they would handle my things with respect, but still with alacrity. And all of those things came true. They movers were very quick, because I already had everything boxed up and sorted, then I just pointed out everything that was going. I was impressed with how quickly they got it done.

I moved 12 times during a 26 year military career. So I feel qualified from a customer perspective to review my latest move with Colonial. All started so well talking with my “Move Coordinator” which is a fancy term for sales. After this person got the contract and first payment he coordinated ZERO. When I did call for help he never answered nor returned a call, rather he passed it off to someone else. Is that coordination ?? Then a QA person became my contact. All she wanted was for me to answer her calls but rarely called back when I wanted some info. Pick up day was fine and delivery was fine. However, I did not receive an inventory at pickup, nor did I get one upon delivery. And frankly at the pace the three guys were off loading there was no way to keep up — they had loaded that morning, drove 3 hours to my house and unloaded. They were quick to get out of there.

The next day I discovered two problems: a 300 pound flower pot was missing and inside one of my picture pack was a collage for a DIFFERENT family I do not know. HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN??? One of a logistics company's main responsibilities is inventory control… and I know inventory control cause that was my 26 year career. When I wrote my Quality Assurance contact, with a picture of the pot, there was of course no response. And when I followed up a couple days ago/ of course no response. Tonight I tried to contact a manager but the bureaucracy (customer service) blew me off.. Not surprised. So here I am not expecting any help and gotta say my experience is less than ConsumerAffairs advertises. Amen.

I was looking for a company that could handle out-of-state move and Colonial Van Lines came up on my Google search. After looking at a couple of other companies, they had the best price. So, I went with them. The customer service was excellent from the very beginning. The person who helped me set up everything was excellent. When the movers came, there were still things to be packed and they did pack those things up. We moved from New Milford, Connecticut, to Troy, New York, which was about two hours away. They called me throughout the move and after the move. They sent me the forms for anything that was broken for me to make a claim and unfortunately, I had two things that were broken. But I never put in a claim. I was in the process of moving and I have three children. I just didn't have time to do it. I just fixed the broken items myself, which was a bit expensive.

To anyone considering hiring Colonial Van Lines, make sure that the movers they said they would give you is what you get. Because I thought I was getting three people and there were only two. So I was a little annoyed about that because it took a lot longer. Despite that, Colonial was easy communicate with and it sounded like they really cared about our transaction. But they should put more effort into the guys that they hire to move you. I didn't feel like they cared as much as I wanted them to about the things that they were moving. I know they're not going to care the way that I do, but a little bit more care would have been ideal.

Other than that, the price that they quoted me was a lot more than what I paid when everything was all said and done. If I would have known it was going to be that expensive, I would have prepped more, did more packing on my own, or do something else, because it was really expensive. When I first spoke to them, their rep said that the quote could change depending upon what we had or what they had to pack up. I was thinking it might be $1,000 more, but it was $4,000 more.

I started out with almost a whole house full of furniture when I was first thinking about moving. Then our new house wasn't gonna be big enough, so we dropped a lot of it. But then we added a couple of small items that made the price go up. I dropped a lot of weight and storage area. So that sort of upset me and that happened on two different occasions.

My husband didn't like it at all when he found out that Colonial was not gonna be our movers, but they were contracting it out. So, here we were talking to four people from Colonial and two people from the other company that actually moved us. It was very confusing. My husband is 89 and I'm 82, so it's hard to keep things in order in your mind as to who am I talking to.

We were given a delivery date, which we agreed to but then it was not delivered at that time. As much as I wanted to move in my new home, I didn't want to be up until midnight moving into my new home with it being 20 degrees outside and it being dark. It was not acceptable for a time frame to be like that, to be moving people into a neighborhood at that time, and not when they're professionals.

Most people that work for Colonial were very polite and respectful, and so was the mover that they contracted it out to, especially the two guys that did the moving. They were really, really great guys. They were very hard workers and they tried to get the job done as quickly as possible, considering our age. I just had one issue with one man. The girl who wrote up my first contract told me that it was probably because he was very, very short-spoken and said, “Well, this is it. Take it or leave it.” He had an attitude. But when she told me that he was a new daddy and probably wasn't getting a whole lot of rest at night, I said, “You know what? I can understand that.”

I’ve retired and decided to relocate 1,100 miles from Minnesota to Colorado. The online reviews and ratings for Colonial Van Lines that I saw on different websites were very positive. I also liked that they said that the entire move would be handled by Colonial, not contracted out to a bunch of little companies. I had a couple of discussions with the reps and I talked to someone else with an updated inventory. So, I went through the whole thing. It went smoothly with the first person as well as the update, but it did not seem to get to the people who were doing the moving. So, they were working off the original estimate, not the revised one. The job should have had three people and Colonial only had two. I was told it was going to be a one-day move, and it took them two 12-hour days to get packed and loaded.

I had done a lot of moving in the military, and we always had bigger crews than that. So it took a lot longer than I expected and longer than Colonial had estimated. The packing was some of the best and some of the worst packing I’ve ever seen. The dishware was packed extremely well, and there was very little damage to the furniture. But in other places, I’ve never seen this before. They took wardrobe boxes and filled them with stuff. The only wardrobe box they used as a wardrobe box was one we had bought and packed ourselves. Sometimes they used clothes for padding inside those, and sometimes they used nothing for padding at all. We found a family heirloom cuckoo clock stuck between three sewing machines with no packing, no paper, nothing. It was weird. There were at least six or eight wardrobe boxes that were used as haul packing boxes instead of wardrobes.

I had good experiences with the account manager. I called customer service at some point because I had misunderstood the contract about having to make a payment at pick-up, but they talked me through where in the contract I agreed to do that. They were very calm and cordial. The movers were, too, and I had no problems with the moving coordinators. It was strange, though, that Colonial said they were handling everything throughout the moving company. The packers, loaders, movers, and unloaders were from a company called ITX. It didn't feel like it was a single company all the way through, and that's one of the things I expected from Colonial.

The customer service interacted with me extremely well and the actual move was handled extremely well. Moving is significantly more expensive than I had expected. I talked to some brokers and they tend to be more on the discounted side, and Colonial came in right in the same range as those. So, as far as working through a broker or working through Colonial, there would have been no cost benefit to me to work through a broker. And the cost came within $300 of the second estimate on a $11,000 move. So, it is close.

I needed a company that wasn't going to cost a fortune because I heard it was sometimes $25,000 to move, and Colonial Van Lines wasn’t like that and was available. They took good care of everything. When you read their information, it said the move date could take up to 30 days past the expected date and that scared me. So, they could have better information on that. Also, I called customer service because I wanted to know if they wrapped everything in plastic wrap and I was told they don’t do that. So, I was worried about my things. But when the crew came out, they wrapped everything up. So there was a little bit of not-great information that caused me a little stress. But other than that, they were very good. The movers were great and we were happy with them.

One of the things that was a little strange was that nobody came out and looked at what I had to take. They just asked questions about how many boxes I need, and I didn’t know. So, they estimated 75 boxes and we actually had 150 boxes. The last time we moved within the same state, somebody came out and looked through our house and did an estimate. But Colonial did not do that. Then, somebody called a couple of weeks later and went through the list of what we had talked about. I realized that I forgot a couple of things and I was a little bit concerned. They estimate the weight, and it says if it weighs more, it can be more money. They estimated somewhere in the vicinity of 6,800 and it ended up being 8,200. But that was just because there were more boxes.

It would have been better if they'd been a little bit more proactive as to what we had and even done a video walkthrough. It wasn't clear and the way the guy wrote it on the estimate, he was picking things from a pre-made list and it didn't match what we had. So it was a little hard to tell. But otherwise, Colonial Van Lines was good.

Colonial Van Lines has the biggest truck. I liked the size. I have four children and myself, so I have a lot of stuff. The first call was with one guy. After that, it was somebody else. The rep might have too much going on his plate. I just made updates as needed for the inventory, but it was fine. Also, the movers were awesome. My only complaint is they made all the boxes full and heavy. I did my own unpacking with just kids, so the boxes were too heavy for me. I had to unpack them where they were, because I tried to move them a few times, and even with the dolly, I couldn't do it.

The first day when the first moving company came to the house, I was leaving. The guy had the truck there. He had some materials like packing tape and boxes, but not for a house full of five people. They ended up having to use the little that I had while he had to leave to get boxes. It took him two hours to do that, so it got delayed a bit. It was cumbersome.

The day that they completed the job, I was finalizing documents with the coordinator. Colonial Van Lines called while I was doing that and asked me to rate them up to 5 stars. He was right there. I don't know that I would have answered the 5 stars if he wasn't there. Other than that, the moving guys were very friendly and helpful. I have two children who are disabled so it was very difficult for me. They went out of their way a few times when I asked for, "Can you set up my bedroom? Can we set up beds?" It's part of their job, but they cared that I had so much on my plate. For a last-minute move with so much stuff, I appreciated all their help.

Colonial Van Lines came up in the top five moving companies when I did an internet search, and looking at the ratings and the last 10 reviews that we read, for what we needed to ship, we picked them. I moved many times in the States while I was in the military and in some of those times, the company that moved us used Colonial. So, I didn't have a problem with it. The coordinator we worked with did a good job. I did everything over the phone and there was no need to have a walk-through. We had everything disassembled and ready to go. It was something that was being stored.

When the truck driver was coming to pick up the stuff, he kept calling me, even the day before, letting me know what time he would be there. At one point, he wasn’t going to make the pickup date, so he called to tell me that. When he didn’t show up that afternoon, I called the coordinator. He said the driver had been delayed on another job and ran out of hours, so he couldn’t drive there, and that he had tried to call me. But I told him that wasn’t true because I had been sitting by my phone the whole time. When the driver finally showed up to pick up the stuff, he showed me his paperwork and said they had given him the wrong phone number. The attention to detail was lacking, but it could have been worse and we still got it done.

Overall, the experience was pleasant. The driver was great and efficient. They showed up, backed up, protected and wrapped everything, and did the paperwork right away. The delivery went great on the other side, too. If you need fast and efficient moving done, Colonial Van Lines is the company to call. Overall, they were responsive, responsible, showed up on time and courteous. The truck driver and Colonial’s communication with the truck driver was perfect at the pick-up, and if he had been given the right number. But on the delivery, he started calling a day before, telling us how many miles he was out and when he was arriving. So, it was a pleasant move.

Colonial Van Lines was awesome. Our moving coordinator was very accommodating and got back to us very quickly. The only thing is I marked off on the sheet, but then there were more things that I needed. So, it was kind of difficult getting everything I needed on the truck. It was underestimated. Other than that, the moving crew was great. They were very efficient, quick and easy to work with. I just had a few things that I had to ask to add to the truck or take in my car.

My grandparents were originally from Georgia, but they were living out in Pennsylvania for the longest time. As my granddad's health started declining, it was my granny's wish to move back to Georgia. So, I was able to help them facilitate that through Colonial Van Lines. Getting the quote went pretty smooth. There were no real issues. But I kind of misjudged everything, and as a result, I got a truck that was too small. I actually have a friend who does sort of the same thing. So, when there was stuff that was left behind, I made another trip to go down and use his service. It was something relatively small, so it wasn't enough to get Colonial to do another trip.

Everybody at Colonial Van Lines was very hands-on, play by play. There wasn't a moment that I wasn't taken care of. I was kept in the loop with everything. When I was making the reservation, I was trying to make it clear the dates and the times. But with that kind of service, they base a lot of things off of estimates. Whereas, for me, with my moving plans and my flight plans, I don't have estimates. I have exact dates and times. So, aside from everything else, I had to get on the phone and let the office staff know when I needed this moved on a specific date. I didn't need an estimate date. I didn't want them to send any of their drivers earlier than the date that I needed. Because it was going to be a waste for the driver's time, and I didn't really want to waste anybody's time.

I like for things to be one way and I don't like surprises. When there were other underlying charges that were coming up that I didn't understand, I wish I was able to be made to understand what was going on and what this other stuff was entailing. It was the whole move and the traveling was overwhelming. Every day I got my hands full and I was getting calls. At one point, it seemed like they didn't know if I was sure I wanted to move. I had to be a little stern and make myself very clear about the time and date that I wanted to do the move. Once I made that point clear about what I needed exactly, everything went smooth after. I would definitely suggest Colonial Van Lines to somebody that I know that wanted to move.

The person who reached out and called me gave me a number that seemed doable, so I went with it because I've had other estimates and everything was high. I spoke to four people from Colonial Van Lines. It was a lot of calls, and chaotic. There was a first person who I gave initial information to. A different person called a few times. I talked to a payment person, and somebody who confirmed the items. The person I talked to the most had no idea what the movers were doing.

On the first day that I was guaranteed the movers, Colonial told me the movers were supposed to be there at 8:00 or 9:00, but 8:00 or 9:00 went and I got a call around 11 a.m. and they said, “How's your move going?” I said, “There's no movers here.” It seemed the movers and Colonial were disconnected. They got their updates from me. They had no idea where my things were. They had no idea when the movers would be there. They didn't know who the movers were.

Colonial Van Lines never could nail me down a time, so what happened was the movers called me, and they said, “We're gonna be there tomorrow morning between 8:00 and 11:00.” They immediately asked for payment when they came, but Colonial and I had said several times that I would pay Colonial and that the movers would not ask for payment. That was interesting. I didn't go with the move. My mom received the delivery, so the first time, I only paid Colonial. The second time, the movers said, “We're not gonna release the goods unless you pay us.” So, I ended up paying them. They packed some more things, so the price went up. Besides the bumps, everything went fine. I was happy to have it done and I appreciate Colonial Van Lines moving everything out.

I looked up moving companies and Colonial Van Lines was one of the first ones and they had really high ratings. I chose them for my small move and my experience with the organizer was great. They explained everything, so it was very simple. The day that they came to pick everything up was good. There were two people. I had stuff boxed up, so they just had to put them in, but I also had a couple of bigger things like a desk that they took apart for me. I just sat there and it didn't take them an hour to pack everything up.

During move-in, they let me know when they were gonna be there and I had everything ready. So they just brought everything up and it was great. They were quick and nice, and nothing was damaged. I moved state to state, from Upstate New York to Pennsylvania, and it was very easy. Everything was made simple. Colonial's service was a bit expensive, but I've also never moved before, so I don't know if that's comparable to other places.

When we talked to the account manager of Colonial, he was easier to deal with than those of other companies. Setting up the move was great. We moved from a 6,000-square-foot home. We had multiple moving days. They came in on Wednesday and finished on Friday. We really liked the crew and the driver. ‘Cause we filled up a semi. We had the same driver for the loading and the unloading. But the crew was different every day. But there were some that did overlap. But they were all really good.

Because of the size, we also needed help with packing some of it. We did a partial pack. By the end of the day, because we had a full semi already, and they were packing it, the quote was identical. It was the same number as what we had been quoted. He used Zillow 'cause our house had been sold. He was able to go room by room with the photos for the staging.

However, I ran into things that I forgot about or things that we ended up taking that I think we weren't going to take. So, I talked to the account manager. I said, "Is this gonna be a problem?" He said, "Absolutely not. You still have 700 pounds of stuff." We didn't need to worry about anything. It was a full-on move, and they did everything for us. They took care of it. It was amazing.

The crew that they had here in Arizona, we hired them because we also downsized. Because of the amount of stuff we had on moving day, everything just got packed into the office or into the garage in the house. But we did have a chance to sort it for stuff that's gonna go somewhere else, 'cause this is just a temporary move for us. We called that crew back, and they were here this past weekend, to help us move stuff from the garage. We really liked the crew.

I was moving close to 200 miles and I contacted Colonial Van Lines. The customer service representative that I worked with was knowledgeable and helpful. The only thing that was confusing was there was a different subcontractor that picked up and delivered the household goods, and part of the payment after the down payment was paid to them. So, that was a little confusing. Other than that, what I was quoted from the very beginning was fair. I paid for extra to have a complete service done. The service included picking up, unpacking and taking the boxes back.

I was in the military and moved 17 times, and I've had companies pick me up, moved me overseas, companies overseas moved me back to the states, moved in the states, and all types of movers. Colonial is the best company I've ever worked with. They're better than the companies that I was given by the military transportation. The only thing that was confusing was about paying the final bill to another company versus to Colonial because it was a delivery fee and they wanted their payment before they delivered.

I thought I did my due diligence in selection Colonial for my first cross-country move. Alas, I should have read the negatives with a bit more clarity than assuming they were just disgruntled people who like to write bad things. All in all, I'm moderately happy with our move, but so many questions went unanswered through the process that led to a lot of worry on our part. For example, I contacted the company very early in the process (maybe four months out) to be sure I got a van....After initial good communication with the company, I heard NOTHING for several weeks. And then a few more. I would call and was told "you are scheduled - don't worry". But how about some info about when you will come? How you will decided how big of a truck you need, etc? My estimate was based on what I reported - no one came to visit and look! As we packed, our boxes became twice as many as I initially reported, but I was told not to worry.

Finally, the big day came. We waited. And waited. Shortly after noon, the truck (a plain, white panel-type truck arrived with four men). They'd been on the road from DC that morning - We are outside NYC. They are already tired, but worked like mad. GOOD PEOPLE. But not a Colonial Van Lines truck or any markings whatsoever except on paperwork. About six hours later, they departed. "Gee, I hope we see this stuff again." We were given a 21 day window for it to arrive. Twenty -two days later, the same truck showed up in Florida with the driver we knew and one other person. They arrived shortly after noon and weren't done until long after dark. Luckily, most of the items were boxed and we just had them place them in our garage. I really felt for these guys - hard workers - but geez, only TWO? Crazy.

In the end, we discovered three boxes missing. Reported them, but no reply. I filed a missing item form and now, three months later, have yet to hear anything. Bottom line, the men who came to help us were great. Colonial? Never again. The truck was old, dirty, no lights inside when they are working in the dark, etc. Colonial should do better. Thank you for asking.

The person who assisted me during the move was very responsive, and Colonial was very reliable, timely and exceeded my expectations. They had a 14-day window to deliver my belongings to me in Florida and I had to get down here earlier than I was planning to because they arrived much earlier than they said they were going to arrive, which is very unusual. The move that I did was extremely complex, and Colonial didn't have any representation where I lived in New Jersey. They had to hire Armstrong United Van Lines as a subcontractor, and they were excellent on both ends. They helped pack one chair. Everything else was boxed for them.

At every turn, people did the best they could. There was a brief failure to update a delivery address at one point, but the two parties managed to straighten it out without extra charges. Overall, Colonial Van Lines isn't cheap, but they do a good job. If a move is large, Colonial's great. If it's small, I'd tell people to rent a U-Haul. It is both precise and accurate.

Getting a moving company is like a woman going to a gas station. You know you could get taken, and you see dollar signs. The first company that I called is also a Florida company. I looked online and their reputation was horrible. I wasn't thrilled with them asking how much was I willing to spend. They could give it to me a little bit less but I was not looking for the cheaper quote. I was looking for the one that was right within my range. I then went to Colonial Van Lines. They were in Pompano Beach where I used to live. I started talking to the young man and what was really great was he didn't push me to sign the contract. They were also constantly in contact. They were sending me texts or emails about things that I have to remember and the things I gotta do.

Then it came time for the movers. There were two gentlemen, and one spoke English but the other one didn't. But they were both really great guys and stronger than one can believe. I was moving everything out of a storage unit and they could have thrown things but I was amazed at the amount of things that they wrapped up. I had a lot of tubs and they put tape around the tubs. When it was about over, the man that spoke English called Colonial Van Lines to tell them what was going on. Then he put me on the phone, and Colonial sent me the link so that I could pay the money for that. I also got another call from Colonial while the movers were still there. They wanted to know if the guys were really good.

I moved from Michigan to North Carolina and it was a wonderful move. I've never had as much contact as I had with Colonial Van Lines through an email or through a text. I would also get calls telling me where the movers were and when our tentative delivery date would be. When they got to North Carolina a couple days later, the man who spoke English still came and there was another guy with him. Nothing was broken or scratched. Everything was perfect. I watched them load and unload a washing machine not using the ramp. These guys were so strong. They were nice as well. They arrived at 6 o'clock at night and weren't done loading till close to 9:00. I also got another call from Colonial Van Lines asking how things were going. They were wonderful.

What I liked about Colonial Van Lines as far as the charge was concerned was they were good. They were a little bit less, but they were in line. I had no problem ‘cause I knew what I was gonna spend. When I called them initially, their bid was less than what this other company was. But they don't come and take a look at the inventory. You only pay half when they take your stuff then you pay the other half when they drop it off. That's nice.

When they dropped it off, the cost was a little bit more than what they quoted but I didn't realize all the stuff that was in there. I had a lot of things plus a washer and a dryer so I wasn't upset over the fact that the price was a few hundred dollars more. I would recommend Colonial Van Lines because they really got it together. I'm gonna probably be moving again and I'm gonna use Colonial again. I would recommend them as well.

I was moving due to business relocation and went with Colonial for their pricing. The rep was very nice but he over promised. He was giving me a price and saying the inventory doesn't matter, just the total weight does. On moving day, there was a bit of an issue with the inventory list, but Colonial resolved it after some conversations. There were a few things that were pre-discussed that the movers helped pack. Everybody was very nice from start to finish, even whenever the sales process wasn't as transparent as it should have been. Colonial worked with me and they were reasonable in the negotiations. I appreciate that.

We were moving 250 miles next to family and I liked Colonial Van Lines’ price. I also looked online and they supposedly had the best storage capacity, which was a factor in choosing them since we had to put our things in storage for quite a while. Dealing with the moving coordinator was good as well as the services and expectations they set. He answered all my questions. I was prepared for pick-up and delivery, and everything went well as expected.

The Colonial rep was pretty good about giving the quote but it was not too accurate. Several things happened, but he was working in an office predicting something and things were being done that were out of his hands too. I had everything ready for the moving crew. But they were pretty sloppy moving things in afterwards. You don't know what you've got out there. You sign it off on paperwork. There was no accounting, like box one, two, three, four, or five that I've always had before. I found out I had a number of items that were not here and they left behind someone else's stuff. I called about it, but nobody ever did anything about it. I opened it up and there was nothing in there of any real value.

I had some things that were gone, like the monitor to my computer. Also, they thought they had to unload the truck onto another truck because of the way of getting into my apartment. But the way it worked, they didn't have to do that at all. They were able to pull their truck right up in my driveway. No one ever reimbursed me for that and I did issue a complaint about that one. So I didn't feel that I was treated pretty good on that, and also the stuff that didn't arrive.

The moving coordinator was really sweet. She was very helpful. She pretty much helped with everything. But there wasn't a meeting or anything to confirm how many things, so there was a little bit of a difference towards the end, which could have been done better. There was a little bit of miscommunication with the third party. So there was a little bit of back and forth, which was fine when all things were said and done. The mover handled everything, so it was not really an issue. It was just at the moment that it added some stress. I was happy with my experience with Colonial Van Lines.

Colonial Van Lines gave us a fair and accurate estimate on what our moving costs would be and the customer experience upfront was good. Diane was the name of the gal I worked with. She pulled up our home listing online because we were moving long-distance from Oklahoma City to Las Vegas. She could see all the pictures of the house and all the content of the house. And so, that helped tremendously in identifying weight of content and that type of thing. She was very thorough. She caught a lot of things the men didn't catch. She knew.

I had boxed up everything I could. The subcontractors that came in were very good. Couple of hardworking guys. However, I left them to wrap but they didn't wrap two bed frames. Unfortunately, they had to unload for an interim period of storage. That meant it got loaded, unloaded a couple of times. They were the last couple of things that went out of the house. I'm not sure why those two bed frames didn't get wrapped. But one of them was a brass bed and the other one was a wooden white bed frame that ended up with marks on it, which I haven't tried to get off. Other than that, they did a great job. They had us all loaded within three and a half hours. Anytime there was money due, Colonial was very good about notifying us.

Do your homework, be comfortable with the information you get and keep asking questions. The key thing is the communication so there are no surprises down the road.

Colonial was right down the road, fairly close to where I had the house I was moving things from. They were also willing to move a small order. I had a small shipment going to Maryland. I was selling my mom's house. I was donating everything except for just a few items. The big moving companies wouldn't talk to me because I didn't have that much. I had basically pictures and some dishes. I hand-packed all my boxes. That was another thing they weren't interested in. I went to Home Depot and got all my own boxes.

When I called, I had just under 30 boxes. And they were all dish-sized because that was all I could lift. Then I had a couple of odd boxes that I had to create boxes for. One was for a chandelier. There wasn't any furniture. They were the only ones of all the companies I called that were willing to find a driver who would add it to his load. That's why I got them.

The rep I worked with was extremely polite, checking in and letting me know when they were coming. She kept me informed. The driver lifted everything and he was professional in having me fill out all the forms. I had to pay at that time it came in, the partial payment. He wanted that payment right upfront, and he got clearance that it had passed through a credit card. It was fine. Then we proceeded to fill out all the other paperwork for him. It went exceptionally well.

When I was setting up the move, I got 1,000 calls and emails. Then, I ended up paying a lot more, almost double. Everything weighed more than they thought than the estimator. So I assume that the estimator estimates low to get you to say yes, and then everything was just a lot more. I'd left one thing out, too. So that impacted it as well. But the moving day was fine. The movers picked up one day and dropped off the next. They were here for a total of four hours. The two guys didn’t like each other too much, though. They seemed frustrated with each other at times.

DO NOT TRUST THESE MOVERS! I have seen SEVERAL other reviews speaking to similar concerns. We were sold on this moving company because they had promised top tier service, no subcontracted drivers, and consistent communication during the move process, which we got none of. The movers we worked with were ALL contracted out and suspiciously the ONLY box that didn’t make it here was the only one with valuables worth thousands of dollars in it. We even labeled it inconspicuously in hopes that it wouldn’t be stolen or “lost” during the move because of its contents. Now we are in the middle of processing a claim after they supposedly “tried to locate” the box after one week.

We also received items for a different family, even provided them the name of the person whose items we had, and yet no one from Colonial seemed too concerned or bothered to try and contact the person who owned them. The box sat here for over 2 months before we decided to donate it after calling for updates and getting nothing. And on top of all of that, there was ZERO communication about the move and its progress! We had to call them multiple times to get updates and on the day our items arrived we got the call THAT MORNING saying that we needed to be available because the movers would be here that evening.

They suggested we buy their old packing blankets-full of holes for $600. Said our items would get scratched if they took them off the items when putting them in storage. We declined. They arrived at our storage unit in AZ at 7pm on Sunday. They would not unload the truck until we gave them $750. There was no one from Colonial to call. Everybody we dealt with was very helpful and I felt comfortable talking to. I walked through room by room. They asked questions, and I answered them. We got everything organized.

We have one room that still needed some work that we worked on all day. Everything else was ready to go. The movers thoroughly packed it up and moved it. And the crew that picked it up were the same crew that delivered it here four months later. After we were out of the house, the remodeling here took longer than we thought. They were very good working with us to extend the storage time because we had to store things longer than we expected to. They were very good and pleasant to deal with. The only person who spoke English was the head guy. So we couldn't really communicate. Other than that, I'd recommend Colonial Van Lines. Even though by my standards that it wasn't perfect, it was pretty good. The quote that they gave me was a few thousand dollars less than the real result. I would give you a minus 5 if I could. I moved from NC to FL. Live in the mountains and was told a 26 ft Colonial Van Lines truck would pick up my belongings. I was also told it would be a Colonial Van Lines crew loading, unloading and driving the truck. I was also told all of their employees had attended the Colonial Van Lines University and they were professional movers and loaders. I was also told all of my furniture would be wrapped and protected. I was also told my door frames would be protected. None of this happened.

Much to my surprise, 5 days before the move, I got an email telling me an outsourced third-party truck driver with an 18-wheeler would be doing my move. It was a transport company and the driver had never heard of the Colonial Van Lines University, much less attended it. In addition, I was to pay him the final payment for the move. He told me he chose my move off of a board where it had been posted for agents of Colonial Van Lines. He hired three people to help him load and he hired them off of CRAIG's list. No Colonial Van Lines University training there either. They took all of my furniture out of the house without anything being wrapped or protected before being placed on the truck.

When the truck arrived in Florida, the unloading crew did not show up for about two hours. They were also hired off of Craig's list. My sofa cushions were laying on the floor of the truck. Even though no great damage, my furniture looks like it came from a used furniture store, beat up and worn. DO NOT hire this company, while not a BROKER, they do have third-party drivers, and your move could be outsourced to another transport company. They call them agents and say they work under the CVL umbrella.

Oh Yeah, I already talked to Aaron, your ESCALATION manager so no further communication is needed. One more thing before signing off, I had to pick up one of the unloaders at our entry gate because his car broke down and it was completely dark when they finished. I provided an extension cord and a light so they could see what was on the truck because it was well after dark when they finished. I would rent my own truck and move myself before hiring this company.

I had to leave New Jersey quickly to be up here to stay with a friend. I carefully contacted three different companies, but Colonial Van Lines had the best estimate by far.

They were supposed to arrive at 10 o'clock in the morning, but they weren't here. I didn't know where they were. It was a bit bush-league that one of the managers down there was calling me and demanding payment while that was happening. That was the only thing that turned me off.

The crew themselves was very good on both ends. They had a mid-size truck, so the move was dedicated to me. I pitched in to help them. I was a check-in guy, because they had to come down a double stairwell and quickly unload that truck. I bought them lunch.

The only surprise was that the turnaround was so quick. The company gave a time frame of picking up on the 26th, then delivering by the 30th. Well, they were delivering up here the next day.

Everything was fine considering the difficulty of the move and the tight turns and stairwells in this new complex. They didn't lose anything, and there was little damage. But they were things that probably would have broken anyway. I was happy with them.

Everything was good. The Colonial people were very helpful, there was no issue there. The only issue I had was I paid upfront through Colonial's portal, but Colonial outsourced the move to another company. So when they came, I had to pay the second half in the other company's portal and my card would not process through their end. It delayed the whole process. For about two hours we were standing out there in 30-degree weather trying to figure it out. I ended up having to Venmo the person. I don't blame them for what happened on the backend, but it's something that they should be able to rectify on their end if they're gonna delegate and outsource their deals or jobs.

I got a job in Birmingham, Alabama, where I'm initially from, and I moved up to Chicago to be with my wife while she was in school. We needed a company to help us move back from Chicago to Birmingham and we went with Colonial.

The move was very smooth and cost-efficient. The moving coordinator was great. They had a Labor Day sale that had expired, but he was still able to secure me the sale price. He was very helpful and I really enjoyed working with him. The account manager was cool. I had more interactions with the moving coordinator, but they did a great job.

Pickup and delivery went well. The two guys who did all the work were outstanding. We packed everything up ourselves. The guys came and loaded everything up and they were able to get to our new address very quickly from where they were coming from. They were very nice, and super diligent. They disassembled the beds and loaded those up along with our furniture. I couldn’t have asked for better movers, they were amazing. There was a minor issue with payment, but we figured it out.

I initially did a general online search and three or four names came up. Colonial Van Lines had a fairly decent quote, so I reached out to them. I was given a $10,000 package and it came in just under $5,000. The gentleman who picked up that request was delightfully persistent. He was charming, but he was persistent. I was in the midst of trying to define the details so I didn't respond, but he kept checking in. He was fantastic.

The same two gentlemen who packed me in Saint Louis unpacked me in Florida. They helped me quickly unpack everything in the wardrobe so that they could take the wardrobe boxes away. That was not part of the original plan, but they were happy to throw that in. I still remember, they arrived at 11:07. We had everything in the condo and unpacked, in the closets, and they left at 11:52. They were phenomenal.

The movers were excellent. The people who came to pick up the stuff were very cordial. There were even more people who delivered it, and they were all very nice. When I moved here, I requested for stuff to go down into the basement since my place is small, which they did.

I needed to move some furniture from my storage units in Anaheim Hills to Arizona. Colonial had a good rate and they did the estimate by weight. They really couldn't accurately say what I had because all the furniture was already boxed up in the storage units. But they knew the empty weight of the truck. They said they would weigh the truck loaded and would calculate it the best way they could. The crew was polite and very helpful. They were two nice guys.

The final price was pretty close to what I was quoted. But it has gotten a lot more expensive to move furniture. I have more than just furniture, as I have a big rollaway tool too. I used to sell tools so I had a lot of them. Colonial did a good job as a whole. I've opened almost all my wardrobe boxes, and the only thing I have not found yet in the boxes is my nice Gibson electric guitar. I have no idea where it disappeared to. But that might not be the moving crew.

We were moving three states and thought that Colonial Van Lines would be the best for us after doing some research. The gentleman who called us was completely professional and did a fabulous job. I walked through and gave him an inventory of the house as best I could come up with. There was a video as well. The house was for sale and he went to the effort to look the house up, so he got to see the whole inside of the house through that as well. The quote was on the money.

On moving day, we just hung around and tried to stay out of the way. Everything was already boxed. It took the three guys maybe five hours. The driver was also fabulous. He stayed in touch the whole time with us, telling us what was going on. The problem came when offloading. It's an old house and we were having the carpet pulled up while they were offloading the truck. But we just stood there and were telling them where to put things, so it worked out.

I always knew where my stuff was, when it was arriving, and when it was approaching. But the car delivery was a little weird because the guy got annoyed about an old style $50 bill. He said he wouldn't take it. I wondered if he thought he could keep my car. Eventually, I found him a different bill so he would stop doing that. But he really should have just taken the bill. It's legal tender no matter when it was printed. But that did get sorted. The price seemed fair but I can't say it was a sweetheart deal. The service team was 5 stars and they did a good job. It was very accurate and as things changed, they were very quick to adjust what it was going to cost or how much room it was going to take. They were right in step with the whole process. I've made a lot of military moves, and usually, they come in with all of their own boxes and materials and do all the packing. I wasn't sure if Colonial was going to be doing that or not. I did some of my own packing but I ran out of time. I was busy and there was a lot to do. But they came in and did the rest.

They packed well and nothing was broken. They brought all of the boxes into the apartment which is up one set of stairs. I wasn't going to do that myself, and they did it efficiently. They unpacked some of the things to make sure there was no breakage. Other things, I didn't really want unpacked. I let them know I would be doing that and deciding where things were going. They were very good about placing things where I asked, and bringing in things that were heavy. Overall, it was a very good experience.

They had good reviews on a website and that was how I got them. The estimation process went smoothly. I discussed the inventory with an agent a couple weeks in advance, estimating the number of boxes and the projected weights of items. They have their own metrics for costs, and the discussions made the move predictable and hassle-free.

On moving day, everything unfolded seamlessly. The team was punctual, and they were efficient in handling my furniture and belongings. They were very kind about letting me see the room. Then if I wanted things moved or shifted around, they moved it until it was where I wanted it. Everybody was very helpful and nothing was damaged or broken.

The last time I had movers was 15 years ago. They broke all kinds of stuff, and they were only going two miles up the road. This time, I was extremely prepared for the move and packed well. These guys from Colonial managed to get it from Texas all the way down to Florida and broke nothing.

I think I didn't tip them enough. I didn't know that was a thing people did, so I feel awful about that. They were really nice and very helpful. You can say they restored my faith in home movers.

It was freaking expensive. It cost twice as much as I was hoping to spend. It's entirely possible that I still got a really good deal but I was just completely unrealistic. We got a couple of different quotes and Colonial Van Lines seemed like the best option. We moved out of a five-bedroom house in Ohio to Maryland, which was about 400 miles. We got rid of a lot of stuff before we moved and the total weight came down to 19 tons. So, it was a big move and it happened over a couple of days. The movers packed up all the boxes but there were certain sections that had labels that would stay. We instructed them on that, but they still took a chair that I had to bring back. They had all the boxes labeled for the basement, first floor and second floor but they ended up taking some of the stuff that was for the second floor onto the basement. So they didn't put the boxes in the right location for unpacking. It was not a big deal because we just moved them later.

My wife, who was there for the unloading process, wasn't able to check every single box to make sure it was in the right room. It was happening so quickly. But most of the stuff was in the right place and the movers were efficient and hardworking. There was something that we were going to follow up with Colonial Van Lines but it was nothing major. We also went above a little bit on what Colonial quoted but it was a good experience overall.

Colonial Van Lines moved me from California to Utah back in August. The rep that I worked with was friendly and he served the purpose of what I needed. I had everything packed with the exception of TVs and large pictures, which we negotiated that they would pack those things, and they did a great job with that. The move worked out well. They were ahead of time which exceeded my expectations.

Colonial Van Lines was recommended by our realtor. I moved from California to Texas, and they helped me pack. At the beginning, they didn't know they were helping me, even though our salesman had told me because my husband had moved before me. They were a little hesitant at first, saying they didn't have enough staff, but they ended up being great. We were expecting for the quote to be a little bit more, but it wasn't the case, and we were happy with that.

Colonial Van Lines fitted my budget and I hired them for my move from Maryland to my retirement home in Georgia because I need to move quickly. But when I began digging into it and looked at Yelp, they didn't get a lot of good reviews and I got concerned because it seemed only 30% of their transportation and delivery goes off without a hitch at best. But my experience was great.

The guy I first talked to did an exceptional job and explained everything. He helped me in a way that if there was a huge price discrepancy, I would understand the difference between giving them information over the phone versus when the person gets there for the more accurate price. He made sure that all the minutia was covered. He made me feel comfortable about the experience and I found him to be authentic. The final price was around $5,000, and at the end of the day, the price differential between that and the quote I got was $700. It all made sense and I wasn't feeling like I didn't understand the difference between what I was quoted and what the price actually turned out to be.

Other than that, it turned out that Colonial Van Lines subcontract to another company that handles the move and I wanted to stay more in step with those handling the actual move. But when it was time to do the move and I wanted to call about something, I didn't know who I should be calling. Despite that, I wanted to ensure that my paintings didn't get damaged and the movers did a good job in packaging those up.

Also, I was extremely prepared during the pickup except for the fact that my father had a whole bunch of 3,000 albums that were unaccounted for. But that was the only area that we really had to sit down with the fine-tooth comb and go back through to make sure that the cost was properly assessed. Outside of that, I had to buy some supplies, but I anticipated that and it was fine. All in all, it was a good exchange. I wasn't too unprepared but at the same time, I needed some assistance and I got that support from the company.

At delivery, I had a few of the items that got broken and had some damage to my table. But I didn't put in a claim because the way that they computed the price was based on the pounds and at the end of the day, there are some things that can't be replaced. They aren't going to replace the full table and the plates that cost $150. So, I let it go since the damages that I received was acceptable. The only concern that I would have is they promised me an earlier delivery point than what they delivered on and that caused a bit of a problem for me. They could have tightened up on the communication and trajectory. Other than that, the price to value ratio was excellent. I'd highly recommend them to anyone and I would use them again.

Colonial sent one mover for a two-bedroom apartment, and he was amazing. He moved couches by himself. He moved so much stuff by himself, where it would take two to three people to do. I can't give enough praise to the mover himself. But I have no idea whatsoever why they would send one person to do a move like that. Any other company would have at least two, if not three. That's extremely unfair to the mover himself.

The dates that Colonial gave me that the mover would be there was on the 9th of September but when he got there, he said, "Well, I have two days to load this, the 9th and the 10th." I said, "No." Because I was taking off on the road literally after he loaded the truck. So, they told him that he had two days to load, but they told me that he was gonna load in one day. The communication between the company and the driver was bad. I kept trying to get information from this person who told me he would be my rep through this whole thing. I had two people supposedly that were supposed to help me along the way, and I would call and leave messages and email, and they both said they would be with me through the whole thing, but they weren't.

Colonial quoted me way too high. If the movers get there and find out there's less weight, then you're just screwed, and I was out of several hundred dollars. The contract I signed said that there was no fluctuation with total weight. I don't remember reading that part. It was whatever they guesstimated it would be, and they guessed way too high.

Colonial Van Lines chooses vendors like POSH movers, but does not stand behind their vendors, they take no liability. Definitely choose Colonial and POSH, to pack and move you if you want:

    1. Damage and destroyed furniture with casters
    2. Lost furniture
    3. Lost boxes
    4. Smashed glassware
    5. Scratched pictures and frames

    6. Late delivery date

The boxes that actually make it will be so damaged, things will fall out of them. We lost smaller items like expensive scissors and a plastic box of glass wine corks from around the world. You have to have pictures to make a claim, so take a picture of each and every item that goes in a box, then what comes out. Even if they pack it!

Note: POSH charges to pack and charges to move items, then they want you to pay for additional insurance for all the POSH damaged and lost items. If you don’t, they only have to pay .60 per pound, even for their unprofessional packing and moving of your items!! Nothing we packed was damaged even though the boxes were split, crushed in and in bad shape.

It all started on November 5th when we had a scheduled pickup from Colonial Van Lines between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. By noon, when the movers hadn’t arrived, we called customer service. The representative didn’t have any information and promised to call us back, but after an hour with no response, we called again. This time, we were told the movers would arrive between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. At 8:00 PM, there was still no show, so we called again and were informed that the drivers were running late. By 8:30 PM, we reached out again, but the representative couldn’t provide any updates since it was after hours. They promised to call back, but no one did.

Finally, after 9:00 PM, someone arrived to pick up our belongings. Who starts moving at that hour? This caused noise violations and disrupted our neighbors. It wasn’t until well after midnight that our belongings were loaded onto the truck for transport to Florida from Rhode Island. My husband and I were mentally and physically exhausted, and we had to book a hotel in Rhode Island, delaying our plans and causing me to miss an important in-person interview.

The driver informed us that our belongings would be delivered by November 8th. However, that day came and went with no communication from the company. Despite multiple calls, we received no answers—just assurances that dispatch would call us back. No one ever did. Eventually, we learned our delivery would be delayed until Tuesday, November 11th, with a promise of a call to confirm the time. Wednesday arrived with no call. When we followed up on November 11th around 4 PM, we were told our delivery was now scheduled for Saturday, November 15th. I expressed my frustration over the continuous runaround and lack of communication, but the customer service representative hung up on me. This happened multiple times, leaving us feeling manipulated and deceived.

We went through room by room and told Colonial what we had for furniture. We estimated the number of boxes and then, there was an opportunity later to update our estimate. So we then walked around room by room and made a few adjustments. They had everything that we were moving listed. So then, they assigned a weight to every item. It was probably based on averages. But the weight seemed a little high, and we weren't weighing every piece of furniture. We didn't have any way of knowing.

Colonial advertised that they did not sub out their work. But they did. I was very disappointed when the trucks pulled up and they weren't Colonial Van Lines trucks and that it had been subbed out. But the guys that did the job were excellent. So I was okay in the end. The crew was excellent. There were two trucks, two men, and a woman. They worked very hard all day. They wrapped everything, took good care of our furniture, and loaded everything up. The only negative aspect was it was very expensive. It ended up costing us $15,000. But it was a fair distance. Overall, Colonial did a good job getting us through a stressful time and we felt taken care of.

When we moved my mom from West Virginia to Wyoming, Colonial Van Lines was a little bit more affordable than the other moving companies. The initial call from the guy was good. But the overall experience overall experience is a 6.5 to 7 out of 10. But part of it was my mom not understanding what was going on. She's 80 years old and not good with emails. But she signed these documents.

Colonial laid out the estimate then they said they gotta recalculate based on what we were gonna move. They were also upselling and asking if we needed boxes. We were moving right around Labor Day, and we set a price. Then they came back and said they had to renegotiate the price and recalculate the weight. The price went up a little bit. Their estimate went from $4,200 to almost $4,800. There was nothing fundamental that changed, just maybe a box or two. She had 20 boxes, which is a small load and it was less than 2,000 pounds. They came upon to her in West Virginia with not a big moving truck, but a 15, 18-foot truck. They rented it just so they could load all her stuff up and take it down to their main truck and she paid extra for that. She paid extra for the straps as well. They just nickel-and-dimed her.

She also has this old Ford Explorer truck she wanted to drag with her back to Wyoming. It was worth about a third of what it cost her to ship it, but she wanted it. It was the last thing she and my dad bought together. Colonial said they could do that, too. They coordinated through a third-party contract for somebody to pick up the truck. Then they weren't sure if they were gonna be there or not. They scheduled it and they knew about it six weeks ahead of time. But they couldn't find a driver. They ended up charging her an extra 200 bucks for that. I drove from Minnesota to West Virginia to help my mom 'cause nobody else was there for her. We got this all done and it all eventually worked out. They got all her stuff there, but it was a lot of calling and wondering about who do I call.

Nobody was ever rude or unfriendly to me. But when the movers came, they were saying they we gotta weigh all the stuff and figure it then figure out the final charges for the blankets. It was like somebody didn't know what they were doing or somebody didn't write something down right. The final straw for me was when they said they were only gonna charge me 150 bucks to have a last-minute driver come and pick up my mom's car. It didn't make sense that they were charging me more because they couldn't find a driver. For the level of service they gave her, she was overcharged by about 500 bucks for no real reason. She paid 6,300 bucks total for moving her belongings and her truck.

We determined that Colonial Van Lines was one of our options. We had a couple of top options based on using that research method, and we reached out to a couple different moving companies and got quotes. Colonial Van Lines ended up being the most affordable of the quotes.

Communication on the front end, including scheduling dates and arrangements, was good. But it was a little shaky on the actual day of moving. We've been told we were going to get a call ahead about the arrival, but we ended up being surprised by the pickup crew showing up. On the delivery side, we've been told there was a date range, so it was expected. We didn't get a lot of communication about the expected timeline towards the end, but the communication of the crew who ended up delivering the furniture was good. That was a good group. The cost for a cross-country move’s always going to be high, but it was what we expected. Colonial Van Lines didn't differ from the quotes or the anticipated cost.

Our family hired Colonial Van Lines for a move from Boulder, Colorado, to Ocala, Florida, and the experience was among the most stressful we’ve ever had. The pickup took place in early June, and we were told delivery could occur as early as June 6. Instead, our furniture did not arrive until June 20, two weeks later, without a single proactive update. The lack of communication, organization, and responsibility caused both financial and emotional hardship.

    Key Issues:

Broken scheduling promises: We were told to expect two days’ notice before pickup. Instead, we got two hours’ notice, forcing us to cancel and rebook multiple hotels (many with penalties).

Late pickup and chaotic loading: The movers arrived well beyond the already shortened window, leading to late-night loading and unnecessary chaos.

Inadequate communication: We called repeatedly beginning June 9 for delivery updates. Each time we were told, “We’ll know more in two days.” That pattern continued for over a week.

Financial and emotional cost: My daughter and her mother lived in hotels for nearly two weeks, spending over $1,000 and enduring ongoing stress while waiting to move in.

Final insult: When the truck finally arrived — at 10:30 p.m. — we discovered three framed, professional photos of our daughter and her horses were missing. These were cherished and irreplaceable. The items were never found.

We are profoundly disappointed in the unprofessionalism and lack of care shown throughout this process. What should have been a joyful relocation became a two-week ordeal filled with delays, confusion, and loss. We hope this review helps other families make a more informed choice before trusting Colonial Van Lines with their move or their memories.

I'm 82 and I was all alone in Pittsburgh. I wanted to be closer to family and I decided to be with my daughter in Florida. I hired Colonial Van Lines to help me with my move and I'm one of these persons who likes to have all their ducks in a row, so I needed reassurance that the movers would be there on the day they said they would. I was closing on my house that Monday and I had to move the weekend before. We set up the pick-up for that Saturday and they arrived as scheduled.

I was happy with everybody at Colonial. The person who helped me coordinate my move understood my anxiety and he tried to be helpful and reassuring. So I liked that. I was constantly trying to figure out what I was taking and not taking. And sometimes it would change and would ask him if we could add something to the poundage that we already did in the estimate. So I was calling for things like that and we got that all worked out. The person that came to do the actual moving was very good. He had to take everything up since my driveway was down a hill and he couldn't get the truck there. It was too big for my driveway. And he was there by himself and his dolly. He was huffing and puffing up this steep driveway to get to the top and I'm sure he was totally exhausted, but he did what he was supposed to do. I really want to give a shoutout to him because he was the only one that I really had contact with and I saw him working so hard.

They were knowledgeable, very thorough and answered my questions. I did most of my own packing. There were a few larger items that the movers had to wrap, shrink wrap and pad. They boxed up a big vase for example. They were very good and efficient. The move went really well. The person that I dealt with kept changing, so I wasn't always speaking with the same person. Although, when it came to move time, the representative reached out, gave me her name and contact number, and said I could call for anything. So Colonial Van Lines was pretty diligent about making sure I had someone to talk to if needed.

This is not a company to be trusted. They didn't arrive on time. They got to the house late at night when they were supposed to be there early. They gave us a last possible day when the stuff would arrive. We put a tracker in our stuff and it is still sitting in a warehouse in Las Vegas. They are now saying they can't be sure when the stuff will arrive. Customer service is highly trained in giving the run around and not providing any answers. They claim that the information is with dispatch, but they can't possibly contact dispatch to get the information. The supervisor is never available and our contact manager is slow as syrup to provide information.

We have cancelled and rebooked flights 3 times and now looking to do so a 4th time. Meanwhile, our 87 years old mother is paying rent on a senior living facility she can't move into yet. I would go with another company than this one. The customer is always wrong and they have their heads so far up orifices that nobody can give a straight answer. RUN AWAY FAST from this company. Don't fall prey to slick salespeople that will say anything to get your business and then have you over a barrel.

I did a two-bedroom apartment move, from Pittsburgh to Georgia. A co-worker had used Colonial and I asked for the same one he used and recommended. Colonial sent him and he did great. The lead driver showed up and had two guys here. They were absolutely fantastic and could not have done a done a better job on the loadout.

But my wife didn't have the same pleasurable experience on the unload. It went okay and it got done. They had just set such a high bar on the front end and he did not have the same level of help on the unload and it showed. The driver ended up having to go to North Georgia to do a move on a Sunday and then he showed up at my place on the Monday. I love the guy on the top end and I think he had hurt his back a little bit but he continued and worked hard. He had two people there that were not as good as the two he had on the loadout.

I had a tight deadline to meet. On the actual moving day, Colonial had their partners come in and do the packing. I had more stuff than I thought, so I ended up needing more help and taking up two 26 ft. vans instead of only one. We lost a couple of things. I can’t find the shelves for one of my curio cabinets despite looking in all the boxes. Overall, they match my expectations. The setup was easy, they were honest, and I was really surprised at how well they did.

Setting up the move with Colonial Van Lines was a little confusing over the phone. I would have rather done it in person, but it was still okay. I was on the phone with a woman and I walked through each room telling her what was going. I forgot several things from the garage, so that meant the price was higher in the end due to the weight. The movers, though, were polite and respectful. They took real good care of all my stuff and they moved fast. I recommend Colonial. They did all right by me.

I didn’t have much stuff, so I just packed the boxes, and then when they came, they only had to wrap a couple of pieces of furniture. And the delivery was fine. It didn’t take that long. There were two guys, and they were nice.

I had a good experience with Colonial Van Lines, but I was dissatisfied because I had something break. It was a large picture frame, about 4 x 3 feet, and the glass shattered. And it’s still in claim. They said it’s 120 days to get processed, which seems a lot, but I think we’re at least at 90 days now. So, I haven’t received any compensation for those. I just got the updated emails saying that it’s still in process.

I had a small move. It was a studio apartment that was moved. So, everything was in boxes, and everything had bubble wrap and was ready to go. The only thing that we didn’t have ready was the bed frame. They had to take the bed frame off, but they didn’t have the proper tools. I don’t know if they went out and got the proper tools to take it apart because we had left. But the moving group was nice and polite. Everything went smoothly, except for the shattered glass that still hasn’t been compensated for.

I heard about Colonial Van Lines through a friend who also used them right before we moved. They had great customer service. The only issue was there at the end, not being sure of when the timeline would actually happen. And we also had ongoing things with our cars at the same time.

The Houston Movers were great. The only issue we had was that any cubes and dressers that we had that were made of particle board were damaged, and we had to throw them away. And so, if we had known that, we probably would have inquired better about how it would be packed, and if heavy items would be on top of those items. And it would have been nice for them to inform us. So, we had learned from that move about certain items and how they are packed.

They were conscientious and very easy to work with. They didn't give me stories. What they told me was gonna happen and when it was gonna happen, it happened. It was wonderful. I was so impressed. Not one thing was lost, nor was anything broken. You gotta figure it was on the truck with other people's stuff, so it went further than just the 1,182 miles that it normally would've done from one door to another. It went other places as well. They were very good with what they did.

This gentleman and his crew picked up the stuff in Florida, and then when he got to my house in Ohio, he was alone. The truck would not fit on my road so I made arrangements for him to park at the car lot at the top of the hill. He went and got a U-Haul truck, unloaded all of my furniture by himself into the U-Haul truck, brought it to my house, unloaded every single solitary piece, placed it where I wanted it, and went out the door. He was gone in two hours. It was perfect. He was mannerly and very nice.

What really made me feel bad is there were steps that he had to carry some of this stuff up. He carried a love seat by himself up 16 stairs. Looking at him, you wouldn't think he was that strong, but I wouldn't wanna get in a fight with him. No, no. I was amazed. My neighbors were all looking because, “Where's the rest of the crew?” I said, “You're looking at him. That’s it. You're looking at him right there.” He was exceptional.

Appalling experience. The initial contact with the coordinator was good, but then everything went downhill... The final cost was 30% more than the initial quote, despite sending a detailed descriptive list of my items (and adding only a couple of small artwork). They have no idea how to wrap artwork or fragile items, a number of my items were damaged (and I have not seen all as some items/boxes are in storage). They told me a week before the move that they needed to use a smaller truck to pick up my items, adding $1000 to my bill. At the other end, I was missing a valuable Persian rug and I had to call/email more than 3 times to get an answer. They finally located it and I got it back. And I have had a box that is not part of my move for now, about 6 weeks, despite sending them numerous emails with the information and sticker number on this box... The owners of that box are probably trying to get their attention too...

I got multiple calls asking me if my stuff had arrived before I even had gotten a call about the ETA from the people that I was supposed to get it from. So, that was the biggest concern, especially when you’re moving cross country and you don’t know the exact date of getting stuff.

The ETA people could be better. It wasn’t that the timing was off. It was just finding out what it was or just getting a general time was almost impossible. The movers though were upright. They’re awesome.

This was my second move with Colonial, and there are things I like about the company. However, this time it felt like they put too many jobs in the truck. The move was for two three-bedroom houses and was about 1200 miles. They probably could have used another mover. They were a little bit slow because there were not enough of them for the size of the move and for the whole day of moving two separate households.

It took around 10 hours to get everything loaded. They had multiple pickups, and because everything was so packed, some furniture ended up damaged and more worn on the other end. The coordinator was good, though. The movers arrived when they said they would and kept in touch with me.

We were on the 7th floor, so it was a bit of a challenge for the movers. They charged us extra to get into the apartment building because they said it was a longer distance than their standard to get to their truck, which really didn't seem long to me. We were a little surprised about that. Otherwise, they did a good job. Everything made it up to our place without being broken, which was amazing considering a very delicate china cabinet that was moved.

The moving coordinator that I had was very professional and went through the whole steps of the process, like the bill of lading and all the signing things that I had to do for doing a move. I ended up having to do a change of the whole bill of lading because I thought I had to move more furniture than I actually ended up moving. Colonial Van Lines was able to go through that process with me.

Moving day was uneventful. The movers came, wrapped everything, took everything down the stairs, and shipped my items. They didn't break anything. The issue was that I was not able to be in two places at once, so they delivered the furniture to the facility that I was moving the furniture to without me being there. So, I had to have someone else come in and open the door for them, and they moved the furniture in.

What I know from the number of times that I’ve moved furniture is very low, but I know that the coordinator matters. The actual physical person that you’re dealing with at the other end makes or breaks how the whole move goes. And I had a good coordinator. They did what they were supposed to do and everything went perfectly well.

The movers were already there loading up and she called after the fact that they were coming that morning. I can overlook that because the important part is the guys that are actually loading it up and unloading it and driving it out here.

I had the same crew of two guys that picked up and delivered everything. The price was really fair too. I would tell anyone to go with them because the driver is the one who calls you and says they're on the way. We had some things that are still missing. They picked up a truck and got to my house and found it had some cardboard boxes and things inside that had been from somebody else. They dumped those on my driveway and outside my garage which I didn’t find out for a while. I filed a complaint and wrote to a couple of people, but nothing happened.

The moving crew were very productive. They didn’t lie around. They moved quickly but they used an awful lot of packing materials. They packed pillows into large cardboard boxes with lots and lots of paper wrapped around them. I think they were trying to maximize the number of boxes they charged me. But in any case, I did not have a good experience with them.

Colonial was one of the top five best moving companies I typed in. Their website was pretty easy to navigate around and figure out where you needed to be. We sold the house and bought another house and went from New York State to Virginia so we used Colonial Van Lines. The crew was wonderful from beginning to end. The customer service was great.

The only thing is sometimes it was difficult to get ahold of somebody closer to the date. I realized that there’s a lot of coordination going on from their end but as a customer and someone who’s moving, the last week is the most stressful for the person moving. Being able to get an answer just a little quicker than they did would have made me feel better. I always got somebody to get back to me. They always took care of the problem. Their price was very fair. We had other estimates that were close. I worked with James and he was really good about helping me do the estimate of what we had, reviewing all our items, reviewing the number of boxes, weight, things like that.

We were trying to empty out my mother's house in Maryland and I needed to get stuff here. My sister found Colonial Van Lines, and she thought the customer service person, Anthony, was really great. So, my other sister and I used him. The quote worked out very well. The final price was far better than what it was gonna cost me to rent a truck or a pod and have me do all the work. The transit time was a bit off, but that was okay. I wasn't in a hurry for it. I was just concerned the longer it stays out there, the longer potential damage could occur. But we didn't have any damage. So, that was good.

I moved from Quincy, Massachusetts to Westchester County, New York, which is quite a distance. Between all the quotes I got from other places, I had the best quote from Colonial and they were the most flexible in terms of if my estimates in terms of furniture, number of boxes, so on and so forth, wasn't accurate, they would be willing to add on. And the pricing to add it on wasn't too terrible considering it was all based off of weight, so it was just easier for me to go with Colonial for that. I had two representatives when we were starting out on a quote, then once my moving process was getting started, they were both really excellent with communicating. If I had any questions, they were very attentive. Since I was moving at a weird time, which was over the weekend, they let me know that they didn't work on these days, but they would check in with me as soon as they could to see how everything went.

I had everything packed prior to the movers coming and they we arrived a little bit outside of the time frame that I was given by Colonial, but my assumption is that sometimes, jobs take longer than what is anticipated, so that was something that was unavoidable, could happen in any situation, and obviously, not a big deal at the end of the day. They were great and very efficient. They were super careful with everything and they assembled everything back. Everything looks great and I've had no issues. The final price was okay but they charged an additional fee for carry distance for a certain feet or yards. A lot of people would not necessarily fall into that distance and I would rather have that just be added onto the original estimate and the original price as opposed to being added on later.

All in all, Colonial's service is worth the money. Moving is a crazy and stressful task, so having somebody like Colonial and a representative checking in and constantly giving you updates and time frames is super helpful and eliminates a part of that stress. Also, the movers who physically came to move my items were very respectful and easily communicative. I would get calls from the driver saying they got stuck in a bit of traffic and their estimated time is a couple minutes later than what they told me when they last spoke to me. So they were very easy to work with and I would recommend them.

The first contact we had with the rep from Colonial on the phone, he was incredibly transparent, very honest. He told us what he could do, what he couldn't do. Then we got two other companies involved. One of them, when we told them we're going to Colonial, he said, “They don't deliver. They're just a broker. They're gonna take it and they're gonna give it to someone else. You're never gonna know whether your stuff's gonna get there.”

So we called Colonial back. I said, “Look. This is what I heard.” The rep said, “That's not how it works. Here's what we do.” What he told me he would do is exactly what he did. The pricing was pretty wild. They quoted us a price and I came in 100 pounds less than the quote, and it was incredible. It was perfect. The service was great. They told us how to prepare for the move. We did it, and everything worked wonderful.

We went from Georgia to Ohio, and it was 600 miles. The guy driving the truck was a subcontractor of Colonial. He picked the stuff up. He was supposed to be there in three days and he got there in two days. They had us move our schedule up to get to Ohio faster. He said he would be at the house at 8 o'clock to load and get done at noon. He got there at 8 o'clock and got done at 12:02. He said he would arrive to unload at 8 o'clock. He got here at 7:59. He said he'd leave at noon and left at 11:58. They were clean. They did not leave a mess. The only regret I had is they took one of my tape guns accidentally. I never got it back.

These guys from Colonial were men of women of integrity. They took my phone calls and answered my concerns when I was told by other companies, “If you call them back, you're just gonna get a recorded line.” They did exactly what they said they would do. And the stuff got here in perfect shape. There's only one handle on a file cabinet that was broken, and that was so minor it's not even worth considering. I wish I had not bought the third-party insurance to cover the move if I had known how good the move was gonna go.

One of the things that I asked him specifically was if Colonial was gonna make the move or do they sub it out to someone. He said they don't do that but it turned out they did. The process was somewhat frustrating because they took what we thought was forever. But that turned out to be a positive because that company that moved us did an excellent job.

The people who loaded did an excellent job of packing everything. The people who unloaded did a conscientious job as well. The only problem we have had was the face of a clock was broken. That was primarily because they put it in with some very heavy glass shelves out of a big piece of furniture. But other than that, if others are in the same area we moved from, I would suggest that they bypass Colonial and go directly to the company we went with which is a local company.

Colonial Van Lines operates as a broker, although they say they’re not. There was little communication between the movers and the company, leaving me unsure of when my movers were actually coming for pickup. While Colonial Van Lines couldn’t tell me what day movers would arrive, the movers gave me a text saying they were ready to be at my place in as early as one hour the next day. Colonial clearly had no idea of movers' location or stops, no logistics provided between the two. My total bill was significantly more than the estimate although they say their quoted price is accurate and shouldn’t increase too much as long as there wasn’t significant additions to the inventory. I was charged for shuttle service although I stated shuttle service wasn’t needed. Essentially everything they say is a lie.

🚨 DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY 🚨. Colonial Van Lines is NOT a moving company — they are a BROKER who lies to customers to secure business. I paid for my move six weeks in advance only to learn 48 hours before my move that Colonial had no carrier scheduled and had handed my move over to a completely different company, Fathers and Sons — the exact situation they promised would never happen.

When booking, I spoke extensively with Drexel ** (ext. **) who went out of his way to convince me that Colonial was NOT a broker, warning me against “companies who take your money and then hand you off to someone else.” He swore up and down that my belongings would never be transferred to a third party, that payment terms were clear, and that my items would be transported directly and securely. All of that turned out to be a flat-out lie.

On moving day, an unmarked truck with movers in street clothes showed up at my home demanding additional payment immediately — again, the exact scam Drexel told me I wouldn’t face. My so-called “account manager,” Tiffany ** (ext. **), acted shocked and promised to call me back with answers. She never did. Not once, but multiple times she failed to return calls.

I was then passed to Donnisha ** (ext. **), who was not only useless but downright condescending. When I demanded to speak to a manager, it took three days before someone finally left me a voicemail — without a name, without contact info, and only “available for 15 minutes.” When I called back within 5 minutes, I was told she had already “left for the day” and, of course, never heard from her again. Even their so-called “Escalation Manager,” Aaron ** (ext. **), played phone tag until he just stopped responding altogether, despite my requests for a scheduled time to discuss my case. This company is nothing but a dishonest broker operation. They:

🚨 Lie to secure your money.
🚨 Outsource your move to third parties without your knowledge.
🚨 Fail to communicate unless you chase them relentlessly.
🚨 Change their promises as soon as moving day arrives.

🚨 Leave you with damaged belongings, surprise charges, and zero accountability.

⚠️ Save yourself the nightmare. Colonial Van Lines will take your money, break every promise, and leave you fighting for answers they will never give you. BE WARNED.

In prior moves with national companies, the company conducted the move. In this case, Gulf Coast Vanlines showed up, not Colonial trucks or crew. They did show up on time. The delivery was not so good.

In past moves, the driver was in the home and checked off each numbered item as delivered. Driver at this delivery was not in the home. Additionally, he wanted me to sign the inventory sheets before unlading the truck. Crew dropped off a number of items without unwrapping them, leaving it to me and my son to do. Failed to assemble two tables. Just left them. Feel I was grossly overcharged for packing materials and final charge was over $1000 over estimate. Overall cost was outrageous for the amount of items moved (1000 sq ft apartment) that didn't even fill up a box truck. Would NOT use Colonial again and cannot recommend them.

I recently moved from California to Oregon. While I understood that household moves can involve a degree of logistical complexity, what I experienced was a troubling lack of accountability, transparency, and integrity. Shortly after my belongings were picked up, I requested a delivery update. To my surprise, I was informed that my items had already been delivered — which was categorically untrue. This miscommunication was only the beginning of an extremely frustrating process during which I had to consistently initiate follow-up inquiries to obtain even basic information regarding the whereabouts of my shipment.

After a full week of repeated outreach on my part, I was informed that my items were in a "climate-controlled warehouse," but no further details regarding location or delivery timeline were provided. It took several additional days — again initiated by my own follow-ups — before I was finally told that the warehouse in question was located in Los Angeles. Even then, no one could provide a confirmed delivery date, and when one was eventually provided, it was two days beyond the latest date in the original delivery window. When I asked for an explanation for the delay — particularly in light of the extended period during which I received no meaningful communication — I was told there was "nothing that could be done" aside from a $30-per-day credit.

When my items were finally delivered, I learned that they had never been stored in a warehouse at all. The same agents (Movers operating under their own business name and under Colonial’s carrier license) who had picked up my belongings delivered them, and informed me that my items had been on the back of the truck the entire time — delayed only because a larger job took precedence over mine. This directly contradicted what I had repeatedly been told by Colonial Van Lines customer service. When I raised this matter with their team, the response was perfunctory at best. I was offered a $150 price adjustment, which does not come close to addressing the inconvenience, stress, and misleading information I endured throughout the process.

This experience has raised serious concerns about the professionalism and reliability of their company. I expected — at the very least — honest communication, timely updates, and responsible handling of my personal belongings. Unfortunately, none of these expectations were met. There was one employee that expressed her empathy to my situation, but her hands were tied. The company was subpar and dishonest. I would not recommend Colonial to anyone.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST! DO NOT choose Colonial Van Lines. I chose Colonial Van Lines for two specific reasons: they claimed to be a full-service mover, not a broker, and their reviews spoke highly of their communication. When all is said and done NONE of that was true. After being sold by Anthony Perrone on the promise that Colonial was a full-service moving company, we were shocked to find ourselves handed off to a third-party company—despite having paid Colonial directly. Had I known we’d be brokered out, I would have chosen a different company from the start. Once he got our money, the communication dropped off and the customer service went out the window.

Next, we were passed off to Viviane **. Talk about being cold and giving no shits. I had to repeatedly reach out for updates, only to be met with confusion and complete lack of knowledge about the status of our move. I watched my things sit in their warehouse for over three weeks and she couldn’t help me get an answer as to why. She simply said, I don’t know I’ll have to talk to dispatch which meant I wasn’t going to hear from her again unless I called and nagged. After watching my items sit in a warehouse for a month I asked to talk to a manager, Hope. She was more kind but as a manager had no pull in prioritizing me as a customer. Which in turn meant nothing to me. Day after day I watched my items sit in their warehouse, then told it would leave over the weekend, then it didn’t, then traveled to New Jersey, then finally cross country to finally make it to me in California.

The third party movers sucked! They gave no care in our stuff. Many furniture pieces looked like crap because they taped the wood and just ripped it off. My daughter’s bookcase had many broken wood pieces. My family paid over $6k for a cross country move! Our items arrived SIX WEEKS LATE! Colonial had the audacity to say we will only pay $30 for each day it was late, excluding holidays. That is absolutely RIDICULOUS! My family of 3 was displaced for over a month and that’s all they could do. I really should have been compensated more. All in all this was an incredibly frustrating, disappointing, and misleading experience. I would never recommend Colonial Van Lines and will not use them again.

There is a long list including time of arrival on pick up, the trucks they use and the delay in delivery. But the icing on the cake is my Harley. Was told they know how to move a Bike, they don't. First, they moved our stuff into storage after pick up, then when reloading into another truck, they attempted to drive my Harley up a ramp (which is not attached) to the truck and both the driver and my Harley fell off the ramp. The driver actually had to go the ER. Then on delivery no way to get the Bike off the Truck.

I had to call a flatbed tow truck to do THEIR JOB. It cost us $472,50. The damage to the bike which had to be towed to a Harley Dealership, is estimated to be about 10k. Some of the other people, they didn't know anything and they wouldn't commit to anything. Initially, I was gonna move to Virginia. And then I had some life circumstances dramatically change, and they helped me switch it to move to New Jersey instead. They were very patient with me.

Our claim was resolved to our satisfaction.

    Original Review: Aug. 7, 2025

I chose 3 family items to move across the country. All three were badly damaged, one cannot be repaired. These pieces had been moved countless times over a period of 100+ years without incident. Two legs on a chair were broken off, the wood splintered; a brass lamp was bashed in; and our breakfront had been impaled, shattering the front glass panel. Boxes arrived clearly upside down, showing little care in loading. We were a long-distance move so our stuff was loaded and unloaded at least one more time after our home. At a compensation of 60 cents per pound, my suggestion: Insist on padding and boxing valuable items vs. only padding. I gave them 1 star because their communication was excellent and they responded quickly to our claim. However, that is not what they're in business to do, which is to deliver your possessions to their destination safely.

I got everything fine. The cost was less than what I expected, because I had just moved from Nevada to North Carolina two years previously and I was expecting to pay more than I did. So, I was happy with it.

I would recommend Colonial Van Lines highly because they did a good job for us. They had two other deliveries and they couldn't take everything that we needed, but they took as much as they could. I was very pleased with them. The crew marked everything and did a very good job. We had to drive an hour to the next destination and the move took a few hours. They even moved some stuff I didn't think they would be able to move. There was a really big dresser and they moved it to the third floor. I didn't think they would be able to get it up there, but they did. It was really good.

I would urge anyone to never use Colonial Van Lines for a move. After their high pressure sales tactics I signed on to have them move my family's home across the country. They convinced me through their sales pitch that I had nothing to worry about. We had preferences on when they came during the pick up and delivery windows and they assured us they would try to honor that preference. Very funny. They came on the earliest pick up day so we had to hustle to be ready then blew right past the end of the delivery window. They piled on several extra packaging charges without running them by us first.

Once the truck was gone, I had to call them constantly for updates; they did not reach out to me. After they told me they would be 5 to 6 days past the end of our window due to a delay, I was not able to talk to a manager. They assured me they would "put in a request" for a manager to call me, which so far has not happened. They said they would compensate us $30 a day for every day past the delivery window. Meanwhile, we have spent hundreds on temporary bedding and home goods, eating out, missed days of work, etc. because we are living in a house with none of our belongings. It has been a nightmare dealing with this company. They do not care about you the customer once they are holding your belongings hostage.

This company is such a scam. I truly believe any good reviews are from the company alone. They will promise so much and easily take your money because after they do you're screwed with whatever happens next. Don’t believe the delivery time, it’s bullshit. And don’t believe the quote. They will charge additional for everything after they load the truck up with your belongings. Will never use them again and will make sure I continue to share how horrible they are as a company until they go under.

And the crew was also great for pick-up. It was the same guy for the delivery as well. He literally did whatever I wanted in terms of placing furniture in different locations. The only thing that annoyed me was the initial financial agreement versus the final. I felt like the cost was a lot. But everything else was fine.

The other thing is they accidentally gave me somebody else’s small garbage bins. And I was annoyed because the ones I received were broken, and the ones that I initially had were larger, and they were not broken. And I didn’t know how to file a claim, and I didn’t have time to really look into it more.

I moved from Phoenix to north of Denver when hiring Colonial, I thought I was working directly with them, but I soon realized they employed subcontractors for the move. The contracted driver seemed uncoordinated, arriving with insufficient workers and not informing me of delivery specifics, which left me anxious about my belongings' whereabouts. The crew that eventually arrived comprised two exceptional young workers, whom I generously tipped due to their diligence and thoroughness. In stark contrast, the older driver, who was supposed to supervise, did little and seemed overwhelmed with the physical demands of the job. The young workers did leave some marks on my brand-new build's walls, but I overlooked this because they worked hard.

In terms of customer service, communication was a notable issue. After sealing the deal, I struggled to get specifics about pickup dates due to subpar communication from the frontline agent, contrasted by a helpful supervisor I eventually spoke with. This confirmed my belief that dealing directly with those actually performing my move—not a broker—is best. Pricing met my expectations, but overall, I wouldn't recommend Colonial Van Lines.

I did an online search and chose Colonial Van Lines since it was one of the top listings. Setting up the move went fairly well, though it ended up being pricier than I anticipated. The issue I faced with the moving process was when the local crew supposed to assist the main movers didn’t arrive on time. This delay resulted in the first two assigned movers having to work extra hours before the additional help arrived.

To obtain a quote, we conducted an inventory over the phone, discussing the number of boxes and other details. During the pick-up and drop-off from Azusa, California to Lynchburg, Virginia, the moving crew was quite commendable. Both the loading and unloading teams performed excellently despite the hiccup with the local crew's tardiness.

Regarding the pricing estimation, I would have expected it to be closer to the final amount. Without a walkthrough, the initial quote nearly doubled, which was a bit startling. Other movers I consulted would conduct an on-site or virtual walkthrough to better estimate costs, which I think would have likely provided a more accurate quote for us. If we had more information, we probably would have reduced the number of items we moved.

Furthermore, having a moving coordinator strictly for clarity and beginning stages over the phone might have facilitated a smoother process. Nonetheless, the crew’s diligent work was impressive amidst these challenges.

My coordinator was exceptional—spending over an hour on the phone with me to clearly address all my questions and finalize the quote. However, while they managed to offer decent service overall, a couple of frustrations cropped in. The most notable was the extended time taken by the movers as it lasted for nearly six hours instead of the anticipated three hours due to multiple flights of stairs and the disassembly of my exercise machine. Additionally, the machine wasn't reassembled at delivery, despite my initial understanding that dismantling and reassembling would be part of their service.

On top of these issues, there were discrepancies with estimated and actual costs. I was initially quoted around $6,000, but the final bill moved up to $7,300. It included charges such as $45 for packing a mattress I had already packed myself, and they did not resolve this confusion despite reaching out. However, I found staff's effort present albeit a bit unsatisfactory as I didn’t receive follow-up for these concerns. Although Colonial Van Lines exhibited close to stellar execution in some aspects, their communication and assurance over costs need meaningful updates. My overall take would be 4 out of 5 stars—they're almost there, yet require attention on the discussed areas to enhance future client experiences.

In my web research, Colonial Van Lines was one of the few that said that they owned their own fleet, which led me to choose them. My experience with the moving coordinator was positive; they were responsive. However, the price did increase by a few hundred dollars unexpectedly, even before the move took place, which was confusing. They were efficient in explaining the next steps, though.

When moving day arrived, I was surprised to find that Colonial contracted out the job, despite telling me otherwise. The movers themselves were great – they went over the inventory list with me thoroughly before starting the move. It was a bit unusual when a third mover showed up later asking for tips, which was awkward. The team did work continuously for approximately six hours without taking a break, which I appreciated, especially considering it was a hot day.

I went with Colonial Van Lines after comparing prices and services with a few other companies. What really swayed my decision was their competitive pricing and perceived value, as recommended during a call with their sales team.

I was moving due to a job relocation and first interacted with my moving coordinator who was excellent at preparing me for the move. He asked detailed questions about my furniture and number of boxes, which made me feel prepared for the moving day.

However, moving day itself was a bit disorganized. Although I was informed that movers could arrive either on Friday or Saturday, I was told last minute that they might come sooner. This lack of timely communication was frustrating as I had to rearrange my plans. Ultimately, the movers arrived on Saturday, later than the given time window, but once they did, the actual move was flawless. They were quick, careful with my belongings, and overall did an outstanding job.

Based on my internet search results for major interstate moving companies, the reviews I came across Colonial Van Lines seemed promising. When it came to working with the moving coordinators, I found them to be very knowledgeable and efficient.

Our move was a bit complex as it involved consolidating the contents of two homes into one. To get an accurate quote, we looked up both properties on Zillow, meticulously selecting the furniture and estimating the number of boxes.

Moving day was quite challenging, given that one mover was unexpectedly absent. This left a single gentleman, with the help of his young nephew, to manage the entire process. It was a tough task, primarily handled by one person, which I believe took a toll on both time and energy. The mover was courteous and showed great diligence, handling our belongings with care. However, the lack of assistance led to prolonged hours and exhausted workers. They managed to load and, subsequently, unload items late into the night, which could have been less strenuous with adequate manpower.

Despite the initial delivery timing mishap, once our items finally arrived, everything was handled appropriately and remained intact. For anyone considering Colonial Van Lines, I would recommend a watchful eye on staffing to ensure a smoother process. My experience, overall, was positive, as nothing was broken and the service was good, though it would have been ideal for the company to provide more support for their crew.
