Colonial Van Lines provides you with a different contact person and sometimes they don't provide you the same information. I had to make phone calls to clarify the quote. It was a little bit confusing because there were a few people involved, depending on which stages in the move. But in the end, it was correct. I always call the manager for my move. He was the last person to get things clear.

There was a contractor to Colonial Van Line and they did their job, packing and marking our things. There were just so many things to keep track of. So I rely on their inventory system. The manager provided me with a cost estimate, and revised cost estimate, based on the actual pick-up or load within the estimate. Then they said that when the goods are delivered to the destination, there would be somebody else to unload the goods into the house. That arrangement was not straightforward because Colonial used a different company here in the location where I moved to. Also, the truck was too big and I had to help them to select the right entry gate.

I asked them why they had to use a big truck since my household didn't need that big truck. They told me that there was some other moving inside the truck and that I was only a part of it. They put a compartment for each of the customers. I had to run with my security card to find a gate that the truck could enter. Without my involvement, they would have a hard time getting the truck into my home, which is a cul-de-sac. I was worried when the driver backed up that huge, long truck into my street. But in the end, he was able to park the truck on the street of my house and block everything else for a couple of hours to unload the truck. Overall, the coordination among different people was not clear sometimes. Also, when we did our unpacking, we lost a few items but we did not file the claim. My wife kept reminding me. They gave it 90 days. But we passed the time and we still didn't find the items.

Colonial was an excellent choice. I moved a couple of other times and I've never had so much communication as I have with this move. The tips for the move and what to expect next like "Well, don't forget to do this" were great. They very accommodating, answered all my questions when they were probably silly questions even, and it was a very good experience. I love the driver. Furniture arrived in excellent condition. We got what we wanted. In both instances, he selected an excellent person to work with him. They gave me no pause. I was very comfortable with who was assisting. Everybody is really glad-handing awesome but the difference is when I found out that Colonial was a licensed mover and they weren't brokers, to me, that was the night and day difference, and they should push that more.

Colonial Van Lines took as much out of the hassle as they could. They took care of it. They gave me good information. They had people checking up occasionally on the run-up to the moving date. So, everything was good there. The people who loaded were very good. During the move, they told me where they were and when they would be here. And they were on time. They brought my stuff and put in a storage building that I have in Texas. They didn't damage anything and everything was very professional.

We liked the service that Colonial could provide and the timeframe that we needed them and the price. Pick-up and delivery were great. They packed and set everything up when we got to our new location. We didn't have any issues. It took a couple of days from the time that they packed the truck up to the time that they unpacked it. They had to go to another location in Georgia and pack another house. So, they put their stuff in storage. The crew was very nice, professional, friendly, and respectful. I would recommend using Colonial.

They didn't make me feel rushed and they knew what they were talking about. They gave me options because I had some different things that I needed done. They surpassed my expectations. I have some new furniture, a little bit bulkier, and we moved into a home that had an interesting shape to it compared to my furniture and the door coming in. The crew was creative as to how they did it. They never got frustrated or flustered and they figured it out. It was a lot of fun. I would use Colonial again and recommend them highly.

I had moved across states and was without my furniture for almost 2 weeks. It took days of chasing people down because no one would tell me where my things were or when to expect them. When my things finally arrived, they had rodent feces and urine one them, and the movers damaged flooring and walls. They even moved rugs out of my bathroom into the laundry room to cover up the damage they had done. Now Colonial won’t answer emails or calls now that my apartment complex and flooring company put a quote together for them for the damage they did. Stay away. Even if other companies cost more, it is not worth the stress of what they will put you through, nor what will happen to your belongings.

I like Colonial's price and convenience. I liked the time that they could do it and the time that they could get it to my destination. They came through and they asked me what I had for an inventory. They did that a few times. Their customer service was very good. We went through it a couple of times, and they said that if I have any changes, I should let them know, and I was under what I said I was gonna be. I moved from Connecticut to Florida. There were a couple of things that were missing and a couple of things that were broken, but you get that with anyone.

Moving day was good. They came when expected. There was about four guys, and it took them about four hours to do everything. I moved out of a three-bed, two-bath Colonial, and they did an inventory on everything, and then they weighed it at the weigh station, and they were down from Connecticut to Florida in three days. The crew was very good. They were very friendly. They were respectful. They were careful from what I saw in Connecticut.

I looked at PODS and Colonial, and Colonial matched essentially PODS while still providing moving help. The moving coordinator was fantastic. The wife was fairly happy with him. I had no issue with him. I was already in Colorado on the moving day. The wife was alone with the three kids. So that was hectic for her. But overall, it was pretty smooth. She said that the guy was really nice. They loaded everything up for her, even helped pack a couple of things that she was kind of lagging behind on, and got out of there quite timely.

We had one damaged piece of equipment but that was hard to notice at first because we just had them load everything into a garage. Whoever was working with my desk didn't disassemble it. They literally tore it apart. So I had to file a claim for the desk and get at least some reimbursement to get a replacement. So the hired help didn't take as good care of stuff. But overall, the move was good. The fact that they'll load and move everything for you was a huge convenience. I'll probably have my in-laws, who are moving to Colorado, do something similar.

The movers that they contracted were late. They also didn't bring all the equipment they needed. They even tore up every piece of furniture I own. Customer service with Colonial was an absolute nightmare to deal with. It's been several months and they still haven't remedied the problem. We've still yet to hear back from them. We sent in the claims. We had furniture repair companies come out and did everything we were supposed to do on our end, sent the emails, the receipts, the pictures, but never heard back. They finally responded to one of my wife's emails saying that they received our claim, and that was the last we've heard, and that's been a couple of months. We weren't gonna buy the expensive insurance, but we had to because the movers were being so rough and tearing up our stuff. We tried to run them off from the get-go but they wouldn't send another crew out. It's absolute garbage. We had to spend several thousand extra dollars on the insurance that they're not even paying me back for good.

And on the receiving part, we had some relatives handle the delivery. They took care of everything while the relatives were there because they knew what to do. Their service was excellent. I booked Colonial Van lines for a move from Florida to Massachusetts 2 months in advance. They were to arrive on Friday or Saturday, they came on Monday morning. This altered EVERYTHING, the lease where I was currently living, and where I was going. Everything was packed and I had to find someplace to stay each day they were late. I had to rebook my airline flight, and change the cleaning service who was to clean after everything was out of the apt. NO ONE called me to tell me of the delay, I had to go through an answering service to leave messages to get someone to call. (They were closed on Saturday and Sunday) It was the worst move I have had in 30 years. I move often because I rent. FOR 72 hours I was absolutely frustrated, plans for the everything were impacted. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE. IT WAS THE MOST HORRIBLE MOVE!

I initially gave Colonial Van Lines a couple of information about the apartment and my belongings, and we did an estimation based on that. At the moving dates where we listed everything by numbers, we were able to get the actual quote. The account manager was very detailed and helpful. However, after we booked the deal, I started talking with other people. Other companies started being involved including the company that has a truck driver, and it was a mess. That was where a lot of miscommunication happened. I was speaking with three different people that were from three different companies and I didn't even know that. It would be better if Colonial Van Lines has a person that knows who the client is and where they are going that's assigned to a specific client.

I felt Colonial Van Lines lied to me because they said they have their own movers but some other company picked up my stuff. I lost an item and tried to call Colonial Van Lines three times, but I never heard a reply from them. Also, the way I paid the trucking company was weird to me. Colonial Van Lines provided me with a portal and I paid the company for them. They asked for my driver's license, my credit card numbers and the security code of the credit card. When I give this information, it's very easy for the driver to go and start charging my credit card because he has all of the information. I felt very vulnerable on that.

Everything with Colonial upfront was great. Setting up the move went great. The guys came to the house, loaded everything, wrapped it and packed it, and that went great. After that, it went to hell in a handcart. They made all sorts of promises. We came down when they said it would be here. We ended up staying for 10 days with friends because every day they made different excuses. We moved from Colorado to Arizona. They were like, “We loaded the wrong load on the truck. We did this. We did that. Liftgate's broke.” They called one day and said, “Do you own a cat? Where's the cat with your stuff?” I said, “We don't own a cat. And I don't want a cat.” So, all that went terribly for 11 days, and they made all sorts of excuses.

When they finally showed up, then everything went great for the drop-off. So, the beginning and the end were great, but everything in the middle was horrible. I wouldn't wish it on anybody. The driver was good. It was the people at Colonial that had no idea what was going on and kept making excuses and making promises. They could never tell us where our stuff was. We had doctor's appointments in Colorado. We had to change them three times because they kept saying, “It'll be there tomorrow.” And they would call us and say, “Well, it's not gonna be there for two more days.”

Finally, I just had it with them. I said, “It better be here because we have to be back in Colorado. We have to be, for doctors.” So, it was a horrible experience for 12 days in between when they said it would be here. So, communication was horrible. There was a couple things broken but it was not horrible. There was a step stool missing. I told them about it, but they never got back to me.

I needed to move in a very short amount of time and of the three different companies I looked up, Colonial Van Lines got back to me soon with a quote. They didn't require to come out and see everything, so that expedited the process. There was also a special deal going on and it was a discounted price, so I moved fast on that. Their reps were always really fast to respond when I had any follow-up questions.

Moving day went really well. They came within their expected time frame and they were fast but thorough and made sure that everything was packed away. Once everything was packed up, they said that they had to make one stop along the way before they were coming to me. They packed away my stuff on Thursday or Friday and it was delivered by Tuesday the following week. It was a really fast turnaround. I was generally impressed with everything that they did and the price was okay considering how expensive it is to move to a different state. I was warned beforehand by other people that have moved to a different states that sometimes, they get a quote and then by the time that they deliver, the quote is higher than what they were initially told. I felt good knowing that that was not going to be the case with Colonial.

Updated on 04/21/2024: Thank you, Donna (customer service follow-up).... for listening to my comments and experience about my move with Colonial Van Lines. Although the move generally went smoothly, there were some issues; and I will be filing a claim. Your professionalism, good will, and assistance are truly appreciated.

Original Review: I had a $20,000 move with Colonial from Florida to Arizona. When the staff came in, they threw down these huge stacks of paper measured about 3-foot x 3-foot, 30 x 30. They would wrap every cup including plastic cups in five to six pieces of paper. The waste of paper, the waste of space, the waste of time, and the waste of my money were unconscionable in my view. They didn't wanna break anything. There was breakage but not on the glasses. If they found something in a drawer that was several pencils and several paper clips, they'd wrap that up in six pieces of huge paper. The waste of paper was awful.

They lost the standards. I had six shelf units made out of plastic with PVC standards. All of the standards are gone. They compensated me at the cost of like $39 per unit, which is regularly $89 per unit. The supervisor on the job was very nice, very competent, and very good. They said, "Don't take the drawers out, ma'am. You have to empty the drawers. You have to empty the drawers because it's too heavy." They'll move a refrigerator or a piano or a sleeper couch, but they won't move a four-drawer chest. You have to remove everything out of that chest, take the drawers out and put paper over them.

If I hadn't moved several times in the last 20 years, I wouldn't be so vociferous and frustrated. Everybody said, "Don't go for these big van lines that, you know, subcontract." They all subcontract. Also, they didn't unpack anything. It's not even part of the offer. I'm here four months. I'm still unpacking boxes and still discovering a shirt or a towel or something thrown in with paperwork. Now, I moved 2000 square feet of lots of paperwork. Everybody was very courteous, professional and nice. It's just the waste is not good. I'm someone who happens to be environmentally conscious.

The rep gave me all the information on the first call and they were able to explain everything. I wanted to know were there hidden charges and what the other issues were and there wasn't anything. They explained how it works if I wind up having more boxes than I thought I would and they said to call them right when I know how many boxes. It was essentially by weight so it was fairly straightforward. It was as advertised.

There was one little thing that broke during the move but it was fine. Also, they arrived a couple of hours later than when they said they were gonna be here because they got caught up in traffic but it didn't matter. Those weren't big issues because when the movers were good and they worked so fast. Overall, it was a great experience and if I have to move again, I'm calling these guys first.

I am moving from California to Boston. Renee who arranged our move and the crew who pick up our stuff were awesome. However, I have yet to receive my items. I have a tracker on them and they are still sitting in LA. Our rep keeps telling us "dispatch doesn't know when they will be delivering yet." We are now past our window and they are supposedly going to compensate us somehow. I will review again once my stuff arrives but for now, I would not use them again. I had no idea this would happen. Colonial Van Lines seemed organized. The move went well, but some of the items got damaged. I'm still waiting for them to resolve a claim, because they broke a large screen TV in transit. That has been over 90 days now that they said that they're still reviewing that claim. When they came to unload the truck, it was only the driver and one helper. So, I ended up doing at least a third of the unloading myself. I'm 68 years old. I should not have to do that for something I paid thousands of dollars for. But without me, it wouldn't get unloaded, because it took them two half days to load all the furniture and belongings into the truck.

They owe me money for late delivery because the moving van broke down. That delayed it for a couple of days. And the driver got sick and that was a few more days. So, the delivery was delayed by five days. They're supposed to reimburse me for every day and I haven't heard a peep about that. Also, the final cost would never go down even though the weight of my possessions was more than 500 pounds less than what was anticipated or estimated. The charges only go up if you I over the weight. I'm not thrilled about that.

When it came to earning our business they said everything a person wanted to hear. When we inquired about using their company, we were told by a company representative that they “ABSOLUTELY” use their own moving trucks. This in fact was not the case as they used a 3rd party moving company. This was the first of many lies. As a military family, we hired Colonial Van Lines as our moving company because we were told that they were a “FULL-SERVICE” moving company that has done “over 12,000 military moves” and is the “#2 moving company in the country!” The representative stated that they own their own trucks and have staff to handle our move directly, which was from Virginia to Pennsylvania.

The representative also inflated the estimate that he gave us subsequently turning our (no more than) 6000 lb move into 10,983 lbs! His reason for this was so there “won’t be any surprise charges on delivery day”. So you overestimate by almost 5,000 lbs? LIE! The inventory was also incorrect and NO ONE at the company cared to correct this despite the fact that I’d pointed it out twice. We also inquired three times about receiving the weigh tickets and other paperwork. The rep said that they do NOT provide the weigh tickets unless the customer disputes something. When I asked how a customer is supposed to know what their move ACTUALLY cost, he then added that a customer could get a copy of the tickets if they requested.

When I reached out to a representative in Quality Assurance he said the employee was incorrect and that ALL customers get a copy of the weigh tickets with their paperwork. I asked him why the representative would say that and he replied “I do not know”. So whom should I believe? LIES! BAIT and SWITCH: On 20 September 2019 with just 3 days before the scheduled pack-out, we were notified by an account manager that our moving “agent” would be a company by the name of GHSS. Moving agent?? I thought our move was with Colonial Van Lines?? So they in fact DO NOT provide this service, but instead brokered out the job to unlicensed and unknown movers whom they feel we should be comfortable with handling my household goods and allowing them into our home!

The account manager couldn’t even tell me what the acronym stood for or who the company was! This is in direct breach of our agreement and is the total opposite of what we were told when they solicited our business! UNETHICAL! The fact that we were never told this despite explaining our concerns about 3rd party contracting is in itself misleading. At this point Colonial had boxed us into a corner because we were now below the 5 days for which we could successfully and without penalty cancel our move and receive a full refund.

I believe this action was very intentional and most likely standard procedure for this company. There was no possible way that this move could be salvaged and we called that night to cancel the job and I wrote a letter to their office outlining the many reasons why. This company has misrepresented itself as a Mover when they operate in fact as a broker. Their US DOT # states they are registered to move household goods, but not as a broker. They are using false advertising on their website that does not indicate Broker status, but identifies them as an "expert moving company with 50 years’ experience."

BEWARE: Apparently, and you can read this on Yelp and Google, their “agents” have adopted an extortion policy of holding your household goods on their trucks until you pay whatever fee or price they demand. BOTTOM LINE: Colonial Van Lines are predators that lie to people just to get your deposit. They are deceitful, untrustworthy, and fraudulent scam artists! They use 3rd party movers and couldn’t care less about your actual move.

I had to fly out to the location and I met the driver and the movers there, opened up the garage door. At that point, they proceeded to secure everything and move it to the truck. Took two to three hours. Once they got everything secure, they took off. They did very well. They were efficient, and didn't take any unnecessary breaks. They were very matter of fact about getting things out, get them secured in the truck, and getting on their way. The date and time they said they would be there in Atlanta, they were prompt and there at that time.

Colonial's website was useful for me. I got the phone number from it and was able to talk with a gentleman who gave me the quote from all the information that I gave and was very helpful through the whole process. However, we had issues with the gentleman who was supposed to drop off our stuff but ended up taking it back to the lot. He left a voicemail for us telling us they were coming Saturday at 9:00 AM. I called back, left a message and told him that was awesome. I was up and ready for the stuff to be dropped off 'cause we had been going three weeks without our stuff. Then he sent me a text message and said, "You guys didn't respond in time so I'm dropping the truck and taking other people's stuff." We called him and told him we responded to him. He said, "You responded to me on a day off so it doesn't count."

We stopped talking to him and called customer service. They said they've had issues with this driver in the past so they allowed us to have new driver. They had a different crew bring it out the next day. Everything was delivered well and nothing was broken. We were able to have everything well-organized by the gentleman who dropped it off. They put it into the correct rooms and asked us where we wanted them. Colonial is a company that helps movers get work and the people that helped us were wonderful. They packed everything very well for us and were dependable especially for a long-term move. We weren't missing anything. If I had a friend that was doing a long-term move, I would definitely recommend them.

Then they show up days late from the day they promise and take a full two weeks to deliver your things. They also damaged ALL of my expensive things (motorcycle, TV, dinner table, appliances etc). All they offer after they clearly damage everything is 300 dollars. I have thousands of dollars lost using this horrible company. Absolutely do not use this company under any circumstances. You will definitely regret it. I basically paid them $7,000 to take 2 full weeks to deliver my things and ALL the big items were damaged. I have no idea how this company is still in business. I lived in the north side of Chicago and I had a few other companies mention that they couldn’t get to that area. So, I asked Colonial if they could verify my address and if they could get there. They said yes and that they have a system. But on the day of the pickup, they said they sent me a semi-truck and the driver was confused because there were weight capacity limits all over the main road that leads up to the north side of Chicago and everything else, like all the expressways, have a clearance level that was way lower than his semi-truck. So he called me often and asked where he would go and what he would do and I told him I didn't know. I know a few of the weight capacities because I've seen them but I didn't know anything about a semi-truck and what you're supposed to do.

The driver was calling his manager who wasn't answering. He called me but I had booked the move in advance and I already made arrangements to come for the lease signing in another state. So I ended up postponing that. Colonial also told me that they're gonna give me a shuttle to get to the semi-truck and I had to pay for the shuttle extra and that there was no other way. And they were gonna give me my money back. When the shuttle got there, I was talking to them about my experience and they told me they were going to take it here and I was not going to pay extra. That was a huge relief because that's not what they said. I called multiple times and they ended up having to change my dispatch twice because they weren't picking up after a while. They told me it was the actual transportation and that they were just gonna take it directly to my apartment. I liked the experience of having the next day pickup.

From the first experience, the driver wanted to insist on renting something and just coming in anyway. But I had a time frame that I could use the elevator because it's reserved for elevator reserves and the staff had to leave. He was very insistent on it being that day and I couldn't so it was a lot of back and forth. On the second day, he packed it quickly and also helped me build all my furniture. It got to the site so that was all very organized.

Colonial said there's an extra charge called the long-distance carry fee and I didn't know necessarily that there was going to be an extra charge for that. It makes sense if it's a little farther out. It ended up being a few extra charges that I didn't know about. I wished they had made that clear, like what the prices are per distance carry and anything I can do or talk to the staff or anything else I can do before. Because I just did what was quickest and easiest with the staff because they were a little late on the second day. It was fine for the moment. The actual move was faster than I expected and was organized. I liked my experience the second time around. I was also glad that there wasn't an extra payment for the shuttle because that would have been another 500. It was a little bit stressful at first but I ended up liking my experience.

Also, I just found that they underestimated the cost the move would be. It ended up costing us almost $2,000 more than the original estimate. And the way they estimated the cost is fraudulent. Also, the insurance coverage for broken or damaged items is ridiculous. They don't provide any insurance coverage. It's 60 cents per pound. So, if I had a 1 pound extremely valuable vase, they'd give us 60 cents for it. I'm not sure if this is in industry-wide. My understanding is estimating the cost by pound is not the best way to go about it. I would never use them again.

The customer care that they showed and the way they followed up on things and the assurances about the security of our goods made me go ahead with them. My moving coordinator was terrific. She was very helpful and made it really easy for us to change the dates when we needed to. It took us about four dates to get the right one. The people who came to our home were really good. They were polite and full of energy. There was a couple that were the primary people, and then they hired a local person. All of them really worked hard. They took a lot of care with our items. They did things that probably were not required of them. For example, we'd be moving something ourselves, and they’d pitch in to help us. The woman in the couple didn't do as much as the other two men, but if I was packing and wrapping something, and if she was just sitting there, she'd help out. So that was really very nice.

It was a little bit stressful when we expected them to be here on Friday afternoon and then they said they would be here on Thursday afternoon. Then they ended up coming on the original day. But it all worked out well. I did a lot of packing of the items in our house, and my husband took care of the garage. I had a lot of breakable things and only one bowl broke out of all that. So I did a pretty good job taking care with the items myself, but the movers were cautious as well.

We estimated a price but then things changed and we weren't gonna have as many packages. So I spoke to our coordinator and she said, “Oh, that's no problem. You can change that right up until 24 hours.” Our move date was either gonna be Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. I told her, “Even though that means I would have to call on a Saturday, is there gonna be someone there on a Saturday to take my calls to change that?” She said yes. But I called and called and never could get a moving coordinator. I ended up leaving a message with an operator of some sort. I suspect I paid a little bit more than I needed to, and that was frustrating to me.

Colonial Van Lines outsource to local people and I never saw a truck that said Colonial Van Lines come near me. Also, it was not just one team coming in to take care of your move. The movers came to our place at 11 o'clock in the morning and when they opened their truck, they discovered they had no packing materials. They picked the wrong truck and that was a dispatch problem at their yard. These guys were not very professional. They came from Baltimore and traveled 100 miles but did not check their truck. They said they'd be back in an hour or so and that they were going to go buy the stuff locally. But they ended up going 75 miles to their designated store then came back for hours until almost 5:00.

By the time they started moving our stiff, it was already dark and they missed the best part of the day. We were just a two-bedroom apartment and we had not that much. We were watching them move our stuff until 9:30 at night and they had it all on the grass in the yard out there. We just left and hoped they got it done because it was getting late and I was tired. But I spent the whole afternoon agonizing about whether they would ever show up or they were never going to come back. I've already given them some deposit, so I could be out the deposit. I also kept calling them and they just kept saying that they were an hour away. But it was not true. I thought they were going to go to Home Depot but they drove to New Jersey to go get their supply because they got a better rate at the other store and that's where all the movers are. They had to wait in line with other movers who are getting supplies there too.

Somehow they got the job done and our stuff started to move west because we went from Philadelphia to Seattle. This was right before winter weather and I knew they needed to do it fast before they run into all that nasty weather. I was hoping that they didn't get caught in all these snow things and blizzards hitting the roads that time of year. I also hoped that it was not raining on the day they delivered because it was Seattle and everything was going to be wet. So, I was keeping my fingers crossed.

Once we arrived here, mid-November, our stuff arrived beginning of December. And when it finally arrived, the people on this end were from a totally different crew than the one that picked up. The ones that picked up our stuff were local and they took it to a distribution center because our stuff was not the only one they transported. It would be extremely expensive if we were the only ones. The movers called us and told us they were going to be here and from that end, everything was wonderful. They came right in front of the house and we unloaded within a few hours. We're very satisfied with them putting everything where we wanted our things and how they assembled everything. We even bought them lunch and gave them a nice tip. This part went smoothly like we thought it should have been. The other part would have been smooth had they just looked at their truck inside.

But the person I was talking to who was dealing with the people from Baltimore was very responsive with trying to get information from the dispatcher. I even got the dispatcher's number after a while so I could call him directly because these guys on the truck were not answering. But she could get to them directly and she kept me abreast of what was going on. Colonial also gave us a good price because I tried several other places and they were at least a couple of thousand dollars cheaper. I wish there was some kind of rebate, but there wasn't.

I used Colonial and I had a good experience. So when we needed moving services again, I called the same representative that I worked with before and he was able to help me again. His name was Nicholas and he gave us exceptional customer service. This time, we were wrapping up an estate situation when my father-in-law had passed away and we were moving some things out of the house that he had given to us down from his house to our house. I made a list of the items and the pieces of furniture that we were going to move, and I estimated the number of boxes. When I was talking to Nicholas on the phone, he had a pretty good sense and we worked it out together. On the moving day, we had people who arrived on time and worked hard. They worked quickly and they were efficient. They listened to inputs and were polite. If my friends asked me about Colonial, I would tell them to call Nicholas.

Colonial Van lines is borderline criminal. They were two weeks late with no communication -- I had to call them every time. They coerced payment before I was willing and before our contract agreement by holding my belongs hostage (charging and additional $3,000 to hold my delivery until I paid prior to shipment rather than upon delivery as the contract stated). Among the things they damaged: Grill, baby changing table, bed frame, dining table, children's toys, glassware, about 50% of my boxes were crushed. I am still missing a $500 portrait. They scratched my walls, damaged my floors. They didn’t confirm the shipping manifest at pickup or delivery so I had no way of confirming if my belongs were even shipped (also a contractual obligation). And they won't pay a dime back to me for any of the damages or hardship. Do yourself a favor and avoid Colonial Van Lines at all cost.

At the beginning it seemed as though this company was pretty good. They signed me up and I told him a date for moving. Not once they tell me that that initial date was the date they used to return your deposit. I talked to numerous people throughout the time and it did not seem organized, but very chaotic because there are so many people involved. I did not have one person that was my contact which I would have preferred.

Due to the escrow date which kept moving forward, I had to contact Colonial Van Lines to let them know the new date. I had to do this several times and each time I did it they were very accommodating. When I ended up not moving out of town I needed to put my furniture in storage but no one at colonial Van lines said that they store furniture. When I found out I told Paul that no one mentioned that and he told me that I should have asked. When the date for moving was final I was called by the mover and he told me the day and time that they will be there, without contacting me first to see if that was okay. I felt like they did not really care about my timeline and that their timeline was more important.

They have so many restrictions on getting your deposit back and were not upfront about all of it. Paul did not want to take responsibility for anything that they did and told me that I should have read the fine print. I didn't appreciate that at all. So the mover called me up on a Sunday and said they were coming Monday at 8:00 to deliver the furniture. Escrow had not closed yet and I had to call my realtor to call the other realtor to call the owners of the house to see if they were out yet. The mover did not allow any flexibility at all and did not check with me before, once again they would deciding and not letting me know, just telling me what they are going to do. I will NOT recommend this company to anyone mainly because of the chaotic nature of the company and their lack of respect for my timeline.

It was a bit weird and Colonial said they'd call me. But they didn't really call me. The person moving was the one who did. In fact, I didn't really hear much from Colonial until after I moved and they asked me to leave a review.

I have an adjustable bed that you have to pick it up and turn it on its side. You can't roll it because the legs will break. They didn't break them, but they rolled it anyway. I'd recommend Colonial but not the movers that they sent out.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! In October 2023, we booked Colonial Van Lines to move us 2000 miles across country. Our belongings were scheduled to be picked up in California on November 14th - 15th and delivered to Alabama between November 18th to 27th. We immediately booked airline flights to arrive the day before our items were scheduled to be delivered. The company picked up our items on the agreed upon date. All seemed to be going as planned. I flew to Alabama on November 17th and waited for my belongings to arrive. We were contacted by Colonial Van Lines and informed that our delivery date would be delayed until December 1st. Then they called again and postponed delivery until December 7th.

I had to change my return flight date on short notice so it was very expensive. I also had to reschedule doctor appointments, reorganize my plans, and change my work schedule. All while I was stuck waiting in an empty house and now missing days of work. The problems did not end when our belongings were delivered. The room locations were written on every box in large letters, but many boxes were not taken to the correct places. The crew seemed lazy and were extremely slow at unloading. At one point they went into our kitchen and helped themselves to our snacks without asking. As soon as their four hour time slot was over they left, even though they had not unwrapped all our furniture and the job was not finished. The only good worker was the driver, who stayed and helped after the others had gone.

I immediately noticed that two brand new queen mattresses had not been delivered. An antique hope chest and a floor radio that had belonged to my grandparents had both been damaged. Many of the boxes were damaged and several plastic bins were broken suggesting they were poorly transported. Due to the delay of our delivery, I had to return to California and only had time to unpack a few of the boxes. However I have already found several broken dishes and am sure there will be more.

We spoke to Colonial Van Lines who only offered to reimburse us $270.00 for the time delay. This was not an acceptable amount considering it cost me $754.00 to change our airline flights and almost $2000.00 in lost wages. We do not know yet what will happen with the claim for damages. Colonial Van Lines only allows one claim to be filed for all damages, so we cannot file until we return to Alabama and finish unpacking. Moving is stressful enough without “so called professionals” who are not doing their job! We do NOT recommend Colonial Van Lines. Jodie and Michael **. The room locations labels were written on every box in large letters, but many boxes were not taken to the correct places.

Every single company I contacted for an estimate continued to spam me and my email was loaded every day. But Colonial assigned me a moving concierge, Nashina. She gave me her number and I was able to contact her. She made it easy. When the movers arrived, they were careful with all of my things and those that they thought needed more security as far as keeping them safe and clean. I had antiques and I only had one thing arrive that was broken, and that was just a frame to a futon.

My great-grandmother's cookie jar was wrapped and boxed, and I was so worried about it. They were able to get everything there except one thing, which was probably a chintzy piece of furniture, to begin with. They wanted me to send a picture and a claim for the futon frame but I haven't done it because moving across the country is difficult. I was in my house for six weeks and it caught on fire. So I've been a little under it. But I had good homeowners insurance. Right before Christmas, the house caught on fire in the attic and exactly one month later, the pipes froze and burst. Some people say their stuff never got delivered or all these other weird things but the company was early to deliver, which was nice because I was sitting in an empty house. Once they got there, it was a done deal. Everybody was very polite and respectful.

We moved from New York to Virginia. We needed a house moved and we used Colonial Van Lines. We boxed everything ourselves and their guys were doing inventory as they were loading our stuff on the truck. But they packed up the mirrors and the lamps. The crew was phenomenal when they were moving the house from New York. But when they got here in Virginia, they were getting tired. They overlooked a lot of stuff that were slated for upstairs and they left them down here. But that's all right and we'll work it out.

So far, we haven't fully unpacked yet, but I know that there were a couple of pieces that got damaged and the furniture that they wrapped had dings and dents on them. Also, I'm missing a shelf on one of my credenza dining room set. But I expected it from the move. Besides that, the moving guys were friendly and professional. Mario was the lead and he was excellent. For the price, they estimated one weight and by the time they got done with loading up the truck, they came back and said it was more weight. So we had to pay the difference upfront. Other than that, Colonial Van Lines were punctual and I would recommend them.

We went room to room and they asked which items we were taking with us. We boxed a third of the stuff, then the movers came in and packed, boxed everything else and moved it all out in one day. They came at about 9:00, and by 4:30, they were gone.

The movers headed across the country, and they arrived for the delivery in about two weeks. It worked out good because we wanted to get here before they did, and we did. The woman from Colonial Van Lines was great, and we came to a price based on the amount that we had and the weight. There were some extra things and they incorporated that into the price. One of the things that I was disappointed with was the driver made the decision not to bring the some of the items that were arranged to be brought here. I asked the driver why he didn't bring them and he said, "Oh, they were too heavy." I said, "These items were things that I had discussed with the woman when we first started figuring out how much it was gonna cost. And it was factored into the price." These items included two large speakers, a weights set and a small 100-year-old gas heater. They're down in Florida now, while I'm all the way up in Idaho.

There were two guys that came up, and they were fantastic. They worked all day long. They didn't take a break, and they really worked hard. They delivered the goods, and they did it efficiently. I was pleased with how they brought the things in too. There was only one thing that was broken in the transport. There was a lot of fragile stuff, so just one thing being broken wasn't that much. The main thing was some of items that were agreed upon weren't brought up. It wasn't a lot of stuff, but for me to have them individually shipped up here is too much. These items had to be forfeited.

Later, I spoke with the woman and she said, "It had to do with the weight. And so, I guess he just made a decision." I said, "We figured out what the weight was gonna be. And if there was gonna be an extra cost, then it should have been something that was discussed. Shouldn't have been something that was just left off." Overall, the Colonial Van Lines reps were very kind, and I would refer the company to other people, but I would tell them to make sure that whatever they agree upon that's gonna be delivered is delivered. If items are not delivered, then there should be some sort of compensation.

Over the course of a month, the amount of time that I spent on the phone or exchanging emails with Colonial was five hours. Everything was fine with the moving coordinator, but the initial quote came in significantly lower than I ended up paying. It felt a bit like a bait and switch at the end of the day, but at the same time, I originally quoted to do a lot more of the work myself, and I ended up not doing a lot of that work. However, I still think overall, it sounded like it was gonna be cheaper than it ended up being.

The movers helped us pack, and they were very quick and nice, but the window for delivery was very long. I was thinking I would be living in an empty home for a lot longer than I was. Fortunately, they were on the shorter end of that window, and it did not take me long to get my stuff. Their quality of work was good even though they did not help us unpack some things. There was also one piece of furniture that was damaged beyond repair, but it was already in bad shape, so it was not a big deal. Everything else was fine.

Everything was fine but the packaging of some of the things like my furniture was not good. One of the legs of my sewing machine was broken. The TV got damaged. There should be a TV thermocool as an additional packaging but there wasn't. It was like you tear off a box and just wrap it around and make a box by yourself. Also, I wasn't aware that additional insurance needs to be done to take care of that coverage. I didn't claim those because Colonial is only covering it on just the cents per pound. So for a TV replacement, it would be about a $17 refund.

So, I went back to Colonial and they were great. They went above and beyond. The moving coordinator was very responsive and communicative. They were always there if I had a question. And even if I didn't, they always sent me updates. So, the communication was excellent.

The crew during the pickup and delivery was fantastic. They did a great job wrapping everything. I boxed a lot of stuff, but they did my entire kitchen. They wrapped all the furniture. When they were starting to load the truck, the head guy came to me and he apologized and said that he didn't wanna put our stuff in the truck because it smelled like fish. He said, "We'll have to come back tomorrow morning." He was very apologetic about that. He said, "I don't wanna put your stuff in there. Because if it sits in that truck, all your stuff is gonna smell like fish."

I was so appreciative that I would rather them have had to come an extra morning than to have all my furniture smell like fish. I called the supervisor and I called my coordinator, and I told them how appreciative I was and how happy I was with his job and that he did that. He could have just loaded everything up and not said anything to me. They all stayed in the area for the night and then came back the next morning. Plus, when they stored it and then when I needed to have it delivered, the guys who delivered it were great. Not one single thing was broken, damaged, or lost. I got everything and it came in time.

Had a horrible experience with Colonial and would not recommend. Packing: A deadline was shared more than a week in advance in writing as this involved a home sale. Colonial pushed packing out a day despite knowing the date/time windows. 2 people showed up to pack a home - unheard of. Packing took over 16 hours and finished 4 hours before the deadline. Communication between the Colonial "dedicated rep" and Colonial logistics was incompetent at best. Calls and emails sent to them were ignored ~ 75% of the time with an unwillingness to coordinate reasonable and standard issues (i.e. coordinating deliverables and needs for the packing team).

Delivery - We were told by the Colonial representative we had up until the 3rd of January 2024 to receive our items. We shared dates in writing when we would be out of town + left voicemails. They chose to schedule during a time when not available. In turn they illicitly charged ~ $2,300 for storage. My wife and I had to pay the balance before they would unload. Colonial's response was, "You pay first and then we will see if you get a credit".

The "resolutions manager" was useless. When asked to share the audio of all calls and correspondence (as they supposedly record calls) he stated he could not do that. This is not our first relocation with a moving company. We have had 7 work relocations in 23 years and in each previous case, never had an issue with other firms. Glaring gaps in Colonials workflow is leadership, service, coordination, willingness to resolve problems and the fact they sub-contract the work. The strategy of scheduling a delivery despite knowing that is not a viable date and then charging and forcing to pay the balance before off-loading comes across as extortion. Will never use again and recommend.

Colonial Van Lines' people moved us and it was confusing because they contracted out with another company and that wasn't entirely clear to us when we first spoke to them. So we didn't deal with Colonial Van Lines very much and most of our dealings were with that Glass City Movers. Colonial was difficult to work with and we found it strange that when we scheduled the move, they gave us a range of days for when the truck would come, and also a range of days for when the truck would drop things off. So, we didn't have any certainty as to when the moving truck would come to pick up our stuff, or when they would drop it off until when they showed up. It was super disruptive not to have a date at a time. So it there was a weird hurry up and wait thing which was super inconvenient. We lived without a bed for a couple of days.

There's got to be a better way than whatever they did. It was frustrating and they didn't seem to understand why we found it frustrating, which was maddening. But the company that we contracted with was Glass City Movers out of Toledo, Ohio, were lovely and they did a good job with the move. They were responsive and communicative. But we didn't get connected with them until the day of the move and we didn't even know who was moving us until the morning of. Glass City Movers called us while we were waiting on a call from Colonial Van lines and we dealt with them from there on out. But Colonial was unresponsive and chaotic. Everybody was cordial with us but they gave a real bureaucratic vibe where whoever we were talking to maybe didn't know all of the details of anything.

I'm very satisfied with Colonial Van Lines overall. I dealt with three internal people from them. They were very on top of it. They called me to follow up after the move and before the move. The movers themselves were very good. There was a little disconnect with the weight. It wasn't as straightforward as I thought it was gonna be, so there was some additional charges because of weight. There was no disclaimer. When we went over the inventory list, I had boxes. When you move, you don't really know until you put everything in a box and go. So I kinda overestimated, but then their final estimate came in a lot over. So, they could have been more clear on the charges. I was over the weight and I didn't know until after, and then there was an additional $500 charge. Other than that, it was straightforward.

The rep who worked with me was spot on. We were under on the weight a little bit. But other than that, everything went great. They showed up on time, did what they were supposed to do, and they delivered when they said they would deliver. Didn't have any damage. And we've had companies before that. They were three weeks late delivering. These guys were fantastic. The price was also half of what we got quoted by six other companies. This is the best company we ever used.

The moving coordinator from Colonial was good. The process was done over the phone and he gave us a quote for it. It was good. The only real complaint I had is we moved the gun safe and somebody's wires got crossed. The person who bid it knew about it, but somehow, the people who showed up to move it did not. They moved it, but they didn't have the right equipment to move it at the time. Other than that, it went well. There were a couple of pieces that disappeared, but I'm not 100% sure they got loaded. I'd use them again.

I would use Colonial Van Lines again. They picked up on a Monday and delivered on a Friday. They did what they said they would and largely met the expectations. Everything worked out well. They were more accepting of an easy payment process. They took a credit card upfront instead of me getting a money order for my payments. We had things packed up, boxed up in big Tupperware crates to some extent and into boxes. We had a few large furniture items. We were in an apartment because we sold our long-term house a year before that. So, we had downsized and got rid of a lot of junk, and had it packed and stored. We had everything ready to go. Colonial came, loaded it, and were able to do it within five hours total. On the other side, they were able to offload within four to five hours.

They came on a Monday. They and anybody else I talked to, said, "You gotta give us two days. We can't tell you well ahead of time when we're gonna come. But we ought to be able to tell you as we get closer to it." They were scheduled either a Monday or a Tuesday. We hoped for a Monday because our last day was Tuesday at our apartment, and we had to clean that up. So, we hoped for them to come on Monday, which they did. But as of Saturday, I still haven't heard from them. I tried to call. I couldn't get ahold of the person. And I didn't figure out until early Monday morning that Monday was the day they were coming. And they were there by early to mid-morning. So, it all worked out. But I would have appreciated something ahead of time for me to be better informed of when they would come. Also, some kind of a platter was broken. But we blame ourselves since we packed the boxes.

There was one small issue regarding the quote, which is very clear on it. They charged me at the apartment because they had to walk further than 75 feet. It was a bit confusing. It was a little more than 75 feet. They parked in front of the door and there was an elevator right there, where they went up to the second floor, which is where we were. It wasn't a big, long apartment complex. The rep took out a wheel and measured it.

It was amazing to me because they were parked right there. They had an elevator. And I got another $150 charge. That was the only thing that I thought, people need to understand, 75 feet isn't very far. So, that was not different from carrier would have done. When they pulled up in my driveway to unload my stuff and had to carry things into my new house and downstairs, they probably walked further here than they did at that apartment complex. And because they could pull up to the front door of my house within 30 feet of that on the driveway, I didn't get charged anything.

I would never hire or recommend this company. They give you low estimates to get your business then after delivery hit you with the true weight of your belongings. I was told I could have x amount of boxes weight was not mentioned until they picked up my belongings. I paid close to $1400 over the estimate. I did not take my heaviest items, a Cindy Crawford armoire, a 65-inch TV entertainment center, and a solid wood full-size futon. If I brought these items my quote would have gone up probably by a couple thousand. After wrapping and their actual weight!!.

They have too many people in the loop and some don't know what they're talking about. I was told Marie/a would no longer contact me but she did!! My salesman told me I would only talk to him during my move... LIES!! The movers were going to hold my belongings hostage because I wouldn't let them deliver a day earlier. I was told they would be back in a week or so if I did not accept delivery. I contacted Colonial and complained, I was told they should have never said that!!

My new floors now have nicks in many places. I did not complain earlier about the floors because I did not know they were new until my agent and I had a conversation about the floors. I was kind to my movers. I made sure they had plenty water to drink while they were moving my items. Be careful my salesman was good, a good crook!! He looked on Zillow at the heavy furniture I was moving so there was no surprise there. I'm grateful my daughter in law told me to leave them behind!!

I was warned by a competitive company. They sent me reviews but I trusted my con man oh I meant salesman and stayed with them!! I will be getting an estimate for new flooring for my living room and hallway. If they don't pay for it I will sue them. By the way, they are no longer on the Consumer Affairs list, I wonder why. This review is going there next because I used them. After all, they recommended them. Be careful who you use they do not care about you or your belongings!!

Colonial way underquoted and overcharged for my move. It was a lot more than the guy estimated by $2,000. It was around $6000 and ridiculous. The guy seemed a little shady. It was not a good experience. Also, there was only one guy to do everything. That was greed on the part of the mover and bad on the judgment by Colonial to allow that to occur. It was a two-story move and there were heavy units of furniture. He was motivated and did his job. But he should have had more than one person and it shouldn't have cost what it cost.

It was my daughter’s move that I helped pay for and she had good things to say. They were very good to work with. They had to wait and when they did the pickup, it had to be across the street. That wasn’t ideal for them but they did it. They also had to wait on the drop-off outside the parking lot waiting for availability to the access to the apartment and they did that with no problem. I was able to communicate with the driver in both cases. They were good. Everything was done seamlessly online through photographs for the quote. It was a very amenable and easy process. I've moved many times in my life years ago and with the technology availability and the access to drivers and the customer service, it was very well done. So all in all, it was a good experience.

I like talking with the person that helps connect customers with the movers. I enjoyed their honesty and they were able to work it by schedule. Colonial's price was good too based on what I was seeing for other moving companies within the area. They were blunt about what the actual cost would be, what I might see somewhere else, what I was gonna get if I ended up doing less days, and where I could get money back. It was no frills and I appreciated that. I didn't have an actual move-to address yet but they were good about working with that. They said, "We put things in the storage. Let us know what the address is and it should work out." The drivers were very sweet and communicative about what time they were coming. They were very good about calling me and keeping me updated about things.

They came much earlier than I expected due to a miscommunication between the company and the actual movers. I was unfortunately 40 minutes out from where they were going to be but they were understanding about what happened and had no problems waiting until I got there. There was a pillow missing from my couch when I moved in. But they were so good about calling people to see where it was. They shipped it back to me. I appreciate how much they work to make sure I had everything and that nothing was damaged. I like that they were able to take things apart and put them back. But the cost ended up going more in the end. We didn't know that we had to pay where to park the moving truck. They couldn't park into my apartment building.

Colonial's customer service team was outstanding. They kept me apprised the whole way. But I was surprised at the size of the truck that they sent to pick up my load. I told them I could accommodate a semi. It was not a problem. But they sent me this little box truck so they barely got everything loaded into it and stuff was stacked that I didn't want stacked. At that point, I was kind of at their mercy. Then, there was more handling involved. I was under the impression that they were gonna send a semi, pick up my load, and then go to the next stop and maybe pick up another load. It wasn’t explained to me that my material things were gonna be handled multiple times on and off trucks.

My grandfather clock, which I explained to them was extremely critical, ended up getting broken. And they took apart the bed and part of the agreement was that they would put the bed back together but they lost parts like screws so they couldn't put it back together. I had to put the bedframe back together and we had to go get some screws. They didn't provide me any compensation for not holding up their end of the deal. Quite frankly, I've got better things to do than fight with them over it, so I just left it. But I would not recommend using them to anyone that I know. They really need to work on the contractors that they work with.

But once I started getting everything packed, I realized that what they estimated the amount of boxes would be was incredibly low. They had quoted me $5,000 but I ended up paying $12,000. They said that it was based on weight. They just estimated about how much they figured a house of my size with its possessions would cost. They lowballed it so much that it sounded a good deal. The crew was fantastic other than they treated every box the same, whether it said fragile on it or not. Even the boxes that said fragile were packed underneath heavy boxes. I've had movers before so I expected that. I packed really well so nothing ended up broken. But they were very personable.

Moving in when we got to our new place wasn't nearly as good as when moving out. When we got here and they had our stuff here, they didn't wanna take a regular money order. They only wanted to take postal money orders. We had the money orders already, but the postal money orders were tougher to get. So, they wouldn't unload our stuff. And they wanted payments before they unloaded the stuff, which was 10 grand. Having to get 10 grand worth of money orders was hard enough. But trying to get 10 more grand in a different form of payment that same day was a real headache.

It took six hours before they unloaded the stuff. And they were in such a hurry to get to another job that my wife and I had to help them unload things at our place. They didn't unpack anything. They just set everything in the living room. After everything happened, it does say postal money orders on the information Colonial Van Lines gave us about paying. So, we should have got postal money orders to start with. So, it was partially on us. But they charged us extra for having to wait to unload. On the other hand, moving out was good. The people who packed and loaded up our stuff did a good job. They seemed like nice guys. They just came and got their work done.

I called a few places and they gave me estimates. One of the companies sent a fellow to come and he went through everything with his iPad and marking down what I had. On the other hand, a Colonial guy just did it over the phone and he was pretty good. I liked the quoted price I got. The only thing was the service was not as accurate as I thought they would be. The quote that the guy gave me was considerably lower than what I ended up paying. I felt lost and I tried to correct it as I went on. In fact, we gave away some more stuff after the initial assessment and I thought I had less than what the initial assessment was. But I was told that the weight of the load was much higher than what he estimated. But there was no way for me to tell how accurate that was.

That aside, the overall price was in the range that I thought it would cost so I wasn't very surprised. The movers packed the larger things and I packed everything else. They were quite efficient and quick. It was a very good experience overall even though in the very beginning when a fellow came in, he was raging that it was much more than he expected and he threatened to cancel the contract, which I didn't appreciate. That was a little disconcerting at that moment. I had to call the supervisor to inquire. I signed the contract.

I moved from coast to coast that was almost 3,000 miles. My stuff were in good shape when they arrived. There were one or two things that were broken. But they weren't very large. It was one small bookshelf that was broken. There were some missing pieces of something else which I eventually threw out anyway. So I didn't really make a big fuss over it. I would say satisfied.

Not only did she listen to my concerns and sympathize with me, she worked to get us a compensation for what we dealt with. She did not need to do that, but I could tell that Colonial wants to keep a good name for them, so they hire experienced people to fix any issues that occur during a move.

They took some things I didn't want them to take but that was a language barrier. They did break my childhood rocking chair and tried to fix it and did not tell me. That part I was upset about. But everything else was great. My only complaint is the communication with Colonial about when the stuff was arriving. We called three days in a row and nobody could tell us. We were within our window and nobody could tell us when it was coming. Then, we got a phone call on Saturday from the guy who was driving our stuff and he said he would be here in 30 minutes. Thankfully, we were home.

I called the main office after I got moved up here and asked, "Why is there a $1000 difference when he does it? Then when somebody writes the invoice, what I have to sign is the $1000 difference." It should be the same one and not what the driver says. They said, "Oh, yeah, yours is less. You're good."

The mover was a really nice person. He took my furniture apart. I took my bed apart, and he took a recliner apart and wrapped it up. One guy who was with him that day was good and fast. He wrapped things up well. It was only a one-bedroom apartment. The total packing process took about two hours. Overall, Colonial was good for me. It's better than the local movers.

Colonial Van Lines understands what they're doing. They are a decent interstate mover. But the experience depends on the people that you end up working with. The representative with Colonial was on point. However, they told us what was gonna happen, but once we got into the move, that was not how things happened. It was a total pack and move for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. We detailed all of that out.

When the driver and the helper showed up, they didn't know they were packing the whole place. They didn't have enough time allotted for it. That was what put the helper into such a poor mood. He was obnoxious through the whole time. He made a mess and wrapped things poorly. He was argumentative and didn't follow instructions. Things got separated and it was very difficult to find the pieces too. He took things apart that should have never been taken apart. He put a power cord in one box and mark it wrong for a different room then took the unit and put it someplace else. The driver had to overcome all of that and kept saying, "Don't worry about it. I got this." He did the bulk of the work. My hat's off to him. He worked his tail off. He tried his best to overcome the bad attitude of the person that showed up there to help him. I don't think the move would have ever happened if it hadn't been for him.

The quote provided was spot-on. It was right on the money. But once we paid our deposit, I was being told that the move dates and times were not guaranteed. I had already booked my flights because they told me when the move was happening. We made it to our flights, but the delivery on our end got changed a bit. We were doing an interstate move and they were moving everything including the vehicle. All of a sudden they told us that they were picking everything up except for the car on this date, delivering it on that date and not picking up the car until we were already supposed to be here on the delivery end. But once the move got underway, the driver was phenomenal. When we unpacked here in North Carolina, the helper he had was a standout. The two of them got everything unloaded and put together without too much problem.

I used Colonial Van lines before on a previous move and I was very satisfied with them. So, I figured why go cold turkey with someone I don't know and go with someone I do know. This time I moved from Mississippi to Ohio. The moving coordinator was very good. I had the same guy. He already had my list of what I moved up there. So, he knew what I was moving back. The moving crew was outstanding. The guy was unbelievable. First off, he was extremely professional, extremely careful and thorough and took very good care of loading and packing. I had some very fragile things that we were concerned about and they made it with no issues.

The load took around three hours. The unload was quicker because at that point, they were just dropping off boxes and we were telling them where to put them. They didn't have to unpack. Colonial used different people at different points. The actual mover is different from the movers that moved me back, but both were very professional. On the way up, I lost some things. I lost an amplifier and a couple of things got damaged. On the way down back, nothing was missing or damaged.

I was shocked that the stuff that was going up there got lost because it was a significant thing and it was marked and it was in a box of its own. The first time was kind of a nightmare because it had snowed. So, the mover showed up and he backed into my driveway. They were loading everything because I had to take off right after they left. I was driving with my wife and dog up to Ohio when it was snowing. They backed into my driveway, which is a long steep driveway, loaded everything up and then I noticed that they were not going anywhere. So, I walked down to talk to them to say, "Hey, I gotta need you guys to pull out of the driveway." The truck wouldn't start. So, we got someone to come and take a look at it. He said it was a starter, but he couldn't fix it there.

They called a big tow truck to come get this truck. The tow truck said, "You're gonna have to wait until the snow melts before I pull it out of there." So now, my driveway is blocked. I've got no way to get out. Fortunately, for me, I had a four-wheel drive Jeep and I drove across my lawn. I just hope I didn't damage it because it was quite a long way to the road. What happened was they brought another truck the next day and transferred my stuff from this truck to another truck, and I think that was where the screw up happened. The move from Ohio to here, my stuff was on the same truck that he loaded it on when they arrived. So he packed it and loaded it. He went and picked up some other stuff days later but when he got here, my stuff hadn't moved from where he loaded it. That was probably why I got everything and nothing was damaged.

We moved from Las Vegas to Minneapolis and the estimate they gave was good. There were just some issues with scheduling delivery. We told the rep when we were closing on the house and when we could accept delivery. The initial estimator said that wouldn't be a problem because they gave me a window that was within that and they would schedule the actual delivery in the window after closing. But just prior to pick-up, they said that they needed to deliver on a specific date, which was the day of closing when we weren't gonna have the keys yet. There was a little bit of back and forth to get that fixed and it took about two or three days. The resolution was that they would have the driver deliver the day after his schedule. Then, we had a couple of damaged items and four items were damaged during delivery from the truck into the house or during unpacking. We're still waiting on the claim. They said it could take up to 120 days.

I had a good experience with Colonial Van Lines. I only had one complaint that I gave to them. They use other truckers and I asked many questions about this, but the people are actually part of them. So when it came time to pay, my agreement was with Colonial Van Lines, but the other trucking company asked for payment right there on the spot when the move was completed. But that was not who I signed the contract with. So that was confusing and there was a little tension-causing because it was on a Sunday. I couldn't get ahold of anybody. There was miscommunication and Colonial acted like they didn't have any responsibility at that point, which was the only time I thought that it was out of character for them. But it all ended up working out. It was all remedied and taken care of.

I was arranging the move for my son and he said the movers took such good care of his things. They were very careful. They were very agreeable people. So that was good. I had a really good manager for the move. His name was Drexel and he was extraordinary. He really knew his stuff because he started out as the low level mover person. But he was really, really, really careful. I heard so many horror stories about movers that I was super careful to make sure everything was very clear. He was really patient with that and kept assuring me it was gonna be okay. I really felt that I got a professional mover. Also, I liked Colonial's website and what it said. I talked to about five different people, and Colonial stood out because of Drexel as being the most knowledgeable and forthcoming with information.

Being a single guy with a dog, my inventory was pretty easy. I have a living room and a bedroom. In terms of big pieces, I have a couch, two TVs, a couple of end tables, a bed, a dresser, and everything else was in boxes. I only had about eight boxes. It was light.

Loading up with the truck took less than three hours. The reason it was that long was the crew was very efficient in the packing. They were making sure about double-taping and being very careful with everything. I've had people that pack more in less time. I was appreciative of how careful the crew I had this time was with my stuff. I was there when they were packing. The moving guys were both from New Jersey and one of them spoke English. There was no problem with communication. The only thing was they lost a $10 power cord for my TV to the wall. I had to spend 10 bucks at Walmart. Other than that, everything was there in good shape. If I move again, I would use Colonial.

Updated on 03/01/2024: Colonial Van Lines refuses to take responsibility for the negligence of its employees. I paid for a ‘full pack’ but ended up packing about a quarter of the boxes. Of the boxes packed by Colonial Van Lines employees, a full third of the items were damaged or destroyed completely. Colonial Van Lines will not take accept responsibility for a truly bad move. Maybe other people have better experiences, but do not let Colonial employees pack your belongings. For example, today I cleaned up glass from a broken picture that was in a box with three other much smaller pictures with metal frames, none of which were bubble wrapped or otherwise separated from each other. The mover also added a heavy book to the box with pictures.

Original Review: Colonial promises service that it does not deliver. I paid for packing. What I got were boxes with no labels, not even my name. Items were simply tossed into boxes. One box had workout dumbbells on top of straw baskets, which broke. Another box had a computer printer put in at an angle with absolutely no padding. In spite of my repeated appeals, my grandfather’s desk was damaged. That desk had moved across the country and to two different houses without being damaged. Colonial damaged a priceless heirloom.

They dumped clean clothes in a box and when I took some out, they were covered with dust bunnies. They were newly washed before they were packed. Colonial texted me 7 times that they would deliver my property on a certain day. With less than 24 hours notice, they phoned me to say they would actually deliver 4 days before the day they had repeatedly told me was the delivery day. Colonial then assessed me $250 for delaying delivery. Do not contract with Colonial Van Lines. Do not contract with Colonial Van Lines.

If there was an option to rate these guys as -10, I would have. First - I selected Colonial because I was informed they employed all their drivers and owned all their own trucks and did not outsource jobs. Wrong - an outsourced company showed up at my door on moving day. Second - they totally underestimated my furniture/furnishings and could fit everything on the truck they brought. Offered to load the rest take it to storage unit and come back and get it - mind you I was moving 16 hours away. They said it would be a few weeks before they could deliver rest of my furnishings.

Third - when I called the company to complain they said they would get a manager to call me back, he did about a week later. Really helpful since I had to make a decision the day I was moving, not a week later. Steer clear of this organization, very much a bait and switch, then not helpful at all when they messed up. I strongly suggest that if any moving company does not send out a person to assess your home, beware.

Everything with Colonial Van Lines was very smooth and our stuff was smoothly transferred to Chicago. The thing is that when we negotiated the contract, all the details about the stuff, the size, and weight went very smoothly. However, once I signed the contract and then paid the deposit, the employees were less responsive than before. Usually, there was no response. Then I felt a bit anxious because we were very close to the date that we needed to receive the alerts and how we could coordinate with all the processes, but I just received the email that's like advertising where I was told, "Okay, someone will reach out to you for that alert." No one reached out to me two days ahead of the assumed date. So, I called Colonial's customer help desk mainly for complaints, and they started to escalate my issue, raised a flag, and then asked the corresponding employees to help me out.

The driver and other employees contacted us in advance to make sure our address was correct. Then they used a lot of equipment to help our furniture from disruption. They double-checked all the things, the volume, and the size, and then signed. They informed me, "You might be charged with the extra fees because of the distance from the car and to your home." I am very satisfied with the moving company. The only blemish is the miscommunication in the early stage. We didn't have any delays and everything was on time and that's my first priority because I don't want to get anything delayed. Otherwise, my lease contract and other stuff will get in trouble as well.

Every time I had to ask them about the location of my stuff, I had to call them and they weren't responsive. Also, they were the main company that I paid, but the company that came to pick my stuff up was different. So, it seemed like these guys are brokers for the actual moving companies. I paid the deposit to Colonial Van Lines, but the balance during pick up as well as during load-off was given to an East Coast van line. So, the bills were weird. It was a bit expensive than what I had thought. And I was concerned for some portion of time after checking the credibility of the process online. Overall, the scheduling was okay but it took us a little bit to narrow down exactly what days we were gonna be having the truck come. A better narrowed down timeframe would be good. Otherwise, they were very good at answering our questions and I had no problem with them. Also, the company they contracted was absolutely phenomenal. They worked really hard at packing all of our things all day and we had wonderful experience with them.

They switched drivers and we weren't exactly sure when the vehicle was gonna get here. They tried to be as forthcoming as they could be in calling us but it seemed like there was a little bit of disconnect on the back side with the people that were in the office. They thought that we'd already gotten our things and then they thought that the truck was coming a different day. But we were able to get ahold of somebody no problem.

When my items arrived, I did a three-page claim of little things like totes. The most expensive thing that was broken was a steam cleaner for a couple hundred dollars. But overall, I was pretty impressed with the cross-country move, that it made it as well as it did. The claim process is a little bit slow, though. We put in a claim for those in September and I haven't really heard a resolution.

Also, we had an initial quote that was about $9,000 and they said we had to pay when we got the items in Colorado. We had paid half of that upfront but when they dropped off, we owed them another $9,000. It was a bit of a surprise that day. We were able to manage it but we weren't exactly impressed because it ended up being the same cost as the original quote we got from the other company. I thought it was a good value for the original quote and maybe even a little bit more but not quite as good of a value for the whole price we ended up paying.

Donna with Colonial helped me get a resolution to the move issues we had. Colonial will reimburse us for the expenses to move the missing furniture to Arkansas. We really appreciate the efforts to resolve our issues.

    Original Review: Nov. 5, 2023

We selected Colonial because of the reviews but our experience was not good. Colonial subcontracted the job to another mover that did not perform well at all. First fail was when the driver called in advance of pickup and told us he did not have space for all of our furniture. The second failure was that none of the furniture was wrapped with moving blankets prior to loading. We had a few really nice items that are not so nice now. When we contacted Colonial about the furniture they could not pick up they offered to refund us $150 if we signed a waver against any further claims and responsibility for the move. There was no offer to transport the furniture they left behind.

There was the travel time, and we had to sit overnight because we were crossing state lines. But It was a good drop. The crew was very pleasant. But when I was told by Colonial Van Lines that it would be the same day, I suspected that would be wrong when I'm moving 200 miles and they would not come until afternoon. And there was no way they would get my bed set up that same day in my new place. They knew where they were coming from and where they were going. One of the promises made was, “We tear down your bed today. We put it up in the new place the same day.” If they're not gonna arrive in time to do that, they shouldn't make that promise.

My experience with Colonial was a lot easier than I had anticipated. Some of the other companies that I used wanted to do video walk-throughs. But Colonial was willing to work with me to get what I needed done. The quote was also accurate. My price didn't go up or down after the move. It was time-consuming, but it was worth it. They had to pick up from one location and do an additional pick-up from a second location and then drive to the final destination. They did it all in one day, moving from Illinois to Tennessee. The moving crew was awesome. They went to work immediately and they got stuff done a lot quicker than I thought they would. When they loaded it up, it only took a few hours, then the travel time. When they unloaded it, it took even less time, so I was very impressed. I would absolutely recommend them.

When I called the first time to get everything set up and I knew I had to backtrack the date, Colonial was fine with that. When we moved here, we weren't sure if the sellers had moved out. Plus, Colonial gave us time to get everything situated in Tennessee. The first person was very thorough and explained the process. He was very informative, kind and reachable. Sometimes, you would talk to somebody and it'd be hard to contact them back. He also followed through to make sure everything moved accordingly and smoothly. So, it was a great overall experience. Colonial called us a week in advance to verify the time and to let us all know when to expect the movers. And the movers fell within that timeframe. So, that was perfect, too.

We packed up the majority of the items and the only things that the crew packed up for us were specific things like our bedroom suite, our furniture, and our TV. Colonial asked specifically which things we wanted for them to pack up during the quote and all that information. The crew was wonderful. They took their time with breaking things down and wrapping it so it wouldn't get damaged. And they also assembled them back the way we wanted them. Colonial called one time just to make sure how our experience with the movers and the entire move went. If we had to move again, we would most definitely request the movers we had because they were great.

I was impressed with the way they interacted with us. When they got to our home, they gave us a brief rundown of what was going to take place and verified what items we wanted them to pack up. They gave us a rundown of what time to expect them when we got to our new destination as well as what time to expect them. When they came in, they asked where we wanted things placed and they placed them where we wanted them, and they assembled them just like we wanted. People should use Colonial and they should request Malik and Victor, who are part of the crew.

When we made the final payment, we used the cashier's check. Colonial didn't convey the information as to who specifically to make the cashier's check out to and we had to make the cashier's check out to the subcontractor. So, we had to do another payment method because when they moved everything in here, it was on a Sunday. But that was the only snag. To be on the safe side, to make sure everything runs smoothly, I suggest a debit card or credit card. The price was very fair and reasonable. It was within budget and I also like the aspect of you paying 30% down. It wasn't even half. And then, you just pay the remaining balance once the movers get to your home.

Colonial was responsive in terms of my inquiry with them. They gave me all the information I needed and were flexible with any last minute changes. So, it was a very friendly experience to work with them. I didn't know how much stuff I was gonna have and it was sort of adding things as I was going along because I was setting up an apartment for my daughter at school. I probably wouldn't know until the day before the guys from Colonial get there. The rep said it was fine and to just give them a rough idea and they could even take care of it when they get here. So, he was very helpful.

The two guys that did all the work were fabulous. They should be commended because they did a great job. It was a five-hour drive. It went from Sherrills Ford, North Carolina to Huntington, West Virginia. They picked it up that night and we met them there at around 2 o'clock the next day. If I had to use Colonial again, I would because they're good. They may get return jobs. So, you never know.

I was fortunate that the men that were there to upload the truck had money to pay the driver so we could finish that transaction. I just knew it would be automatic from my credit card account. But it was not. That was my only complaint. I wish I had Colonial do everything, but I didn't. I would not have had many people involved. But that was my fault. I just thought that would be too expensive. But by the time we paid them purple people helpers, it was $8,000. I paid Colonial 16,000, so probably, they would charge me only $8,000 more. So, it was a lack of knowledge. But the drivers were very good. They came in and wrapped things up.

We moved for a new job from Saint Louis to Kansas City. We moved a two-bedroom, one bath house to a similar size house here in Kansas City. It went well. The moving crew was friendly and hard-working, and we had no complaints there. They picked up our stuff at our Saint Louis house around noon and they got done in Kansas City the next day at about 3 o'clock. They were good. They were productive, and didn't hang around and chat too much. They took a couple of breaks, which I would too.

We packed ourselves, and then they essentially just picked up all the boxes. They did wrap the TV, mirrors and pictures, but they took those things that they packed out of the boxes. They just left the boxes and then we went through everything. I'd recommend Colonial. They're honest. You only had to do a deposit up front and pay when the whole thing was done. The crew showed up on time and they weren't lazy. Nothing was broken, too. So, that was also a plus.

I called several of companies and Colonial Van Lines was the one that gave me the best rate and the best timing, but still, the price was a lot. Moving itself is horrendous all together, and I always think that everything could be a bit cheaper regardless of who it was. Also, one thing that was not made clear was about bags. They said nothing could be in bags, but in essence, pillows, blankets and sheets could be thrown into bags. I tried to put everything in boxes, which was fine, but it would have been much easier if I could have known about the bags ahead of time. I wouldn't have put all these other stuff in boxes. I packed everything myself and it was quite a bit. Besides that, everything was really good.

I had a really great experience with Colonial Van Lines. It was probably the hottest day of the year that they moved me, but they were really good about keeping in touch with me. If they said they were gonna be some place at a certain time, they were there, and they called ahead to let me know when they were on their way. Colonial appeared to be very honest and they were able to answer questions that I had about how long it was going to take to book and about how much was it going to be. And we were able to get through approximately how much I had and make an evaluation quickly on how much I would probably need for the whole truck. We did all of that in a couple of days and we talked a couple times. I really appreciated how organized and intelligent they were about their business. I talked to some other folks that are still calling me now who are arguing and screaming at me about why didn't I book with them. But Colonial was so highly efficient about the few things that were relevant and super important to someone who wanted to move with them and I loved that.

Aside from that, Colonial's trucks have been upgraded recently, so they looked clean and well kept, which matters. They were impressive and there was camaraderie between the drivers of Colonial trucks. Whoever is running the company from the top down is smart and kind, because that is what it takes to create the kind of stability and camaraderie we saw. Aside from that, no Colonial moving vans have tried to run us off the road. They were professional on the road and they just stuck out.

We also talked to our mover a couple of times and he was very straightforward and kind. We had a couple of hiccups and he handled them. He told us not to worry and that he got that covered. I really appreciated it, because when your stuff is on somebody else's truck, you want to know that you have a working relationship with them and that you trust them. And we did. So, we would recommend them.

If you're on the hunt for a moving company ready to mishandle a quarter of your belongings, overcharge you without addressing your concerns, and teach you the costs and benefits of suing a moving company, look no further than Colonial Van Lines. Our recent encounter with their costly relocation services left us deeply disheartened and frustrated.

Their estimate for our moving cost was 75% higher than originally predicted. We expected to pay around 4k to have all of our belongings packed, moved, and unpacked in a new home, but the end result was 7.5k - not unpacked but simply dropped and scattered around our new home. They decided to stop moving 2/3 of the way through the move. Thankfully, TaskRabbit workers came to our rescue. Their pricing scheme and the way they communicate is very convoluted. You are told that you will have a point person to explain everything and check in with you, however, I ended up have 3 point people, and each did not know what the other was doing.

One person told me the price would be 5k after weighing everything, but later they raised it to 7.5k. What's more, our most valuable belongings were damaged or destroyed. Our experience with Colonial Van Lines was dreadful and we hope to help others avoid the same blunder. Knowing there are numerous reputable companies out there, we wish we had researched more diligently, and gone with something like Gentle Giant. To underscore the most pressing issues: our most valuable items were damaged or destroyed. Upon arrival at our new home, we were informed that their usual crew was unavailable, and they'd enlisted unprofessional workers, and then did not reimburse us for the "white-glove" service we had paid for yet did not receive, though they did give us $200 for the TaskRabbit workers which is what we will use next time in order to save a great deal of money and headache.

Colonial Van Lines' account manager was good. That was the only good thing. What they did was contract it to a third party, and that third party did the move. Colonial is not professional and caring. They were supposed to send a few more people. They sent one guy and a kid to unload the whole thing. And when they transported, there was a leakage of water from the truck and our couch was spoiled because of that. And a lot of boxes had water in them. We were able to save some items because we thought people would be careless. So, inside, we covered our items. But a few them like bed sheets, because they were in the warehouse for four days, had a stain on them even after washing.

I made plans with Colonial to move from Idaho to North Carolina and before the moving van arrived, I worked out a lot of the details with them to avoid problems. For example, in Idaho, where we were living, was at the end of a 5-mile single lane, unpaved road, and there was no way that a 20-ft moving van or bigger was going to get down that road. There was also no turnaround capability. So, we coordinated with the driver to arrange for a shuttle-type truck. I also worked out the details of the move as well as the packing and loading with the driver, and that went well.

When we first agreed that Colonial would be the mover, I made an estimate of the number of boxes that it would take to pack up all my stuff and my estimate turned out to be about half of what the number of boxes were needed. After the driver arrived and did the packaging, I called the company and advised them that the estimate earlier that came from Colonial was going to be higher than what I first estimated, so they bumped up the weight of the load and a number of boxes, considerably. Then, when the driver loaded everything, there were more pieces of furniture and small things that I hadn't described. But he had everything listed on the inventory. So, there was a third and final estimate that were made.

Also, the estimate on when the truck would arrive to load in Idaho was off by about two days from when they actually arrived. And when it came time to do the unloading here in North Carolina, the estimate on arrival date was about four days later than what I expected. But other than the date change, the unloading experience was very good. It turned out that we were a part load on the truck and during the unloading, there was some problems about getting my portion of it. During the shuffle with the shuttle and the loading and unloading twice rather than just once, some of the items that I had packed in the boxes must have got bumped around a little bit, and there was some minor glass damage, scrap, cracks, and a few scratches on furniture.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, they are the WORST moving company that I have ever experienced! Hands down! The full reason they are top ranked is because if you have an issue and they give you a small credit back they make you sign a non-disparaging agreement which means you cannot tell anyone how bad the experience was or they can sue you. The $200 credit they offered me was a slap in the face.

My son was moving a studio apartment from Massachusetts to DC/Virginia. I was talked into this company by their sales rep, Zachary **. I was going to go with First National Van that was $300 cheaper but Colonial convinced me paying $2700 would get my son's furniture there safer and faster. Boy was that wrong. It was an 8 hour drive from one apartment to the other. My sales rep told me they would likely do it in two days at the longest it would arrive on Saturday. Wrong again, it took 8 days!

To start the day of the move the driver called my son and told him he would be there in one hour. One hour and forty-five minutes later the driver showed up by HIMSELF! He kept telling my son that another person was on their way but no one ever showed up. He took numerous smoke breaks. It took this guy hours and hours to move everything from the studio apartment to the truck.

My son and I called Colonial everyday, multiple times no one ever updated us. When I would call my sales rep he would transfer me to dispatch and they would RUDELY tell me that they had no update or that someone would call back. I cannot even count how many times they told me that someone would call to update and never did. A lot times the rep or dispatch or customer service would say they called me but got no answer. Which is ridiculous, this is 2023 I have an iPhone if they truly called they could have left a message. Bottom line, they never called.

When you are moving into a city apartment you have to reserve the elevators and unloading area. Colonial also charges if their drivers have to walk more than 75 feet to unload. So we needed to know when they were arriving. Eight days after they picked up my son's stuff they arrived at the new apartment. The truck that contained my son's stuff had been towed. At least that is what East Coast Van lines (that Colonial had hired) told my son.

A top manager, Aaron ** from Colonial offered to give me a $200 credit if I would sign a non-disparaging agreement toward Colonial. Aaron also refused to give me his last name, He told me it was company policy but my rep Zachary ** told me that was not true. Aaron also told me that it was planned to only have one mover pick up my son's stuff which was also not true because Zachary, my sales rep told me there should have been two movers. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND GOING WITH ANY OTHER MOVING COMPANY OTHER THAN COLONIAL. THEY ARE A DISASTER OF A COMPANY!

First, the rep told me it was gonna be tomorrow between 8:00 and 12:00. I waited all day. 12 o'clock came and there was nobody. I called around 12:30 and he said he never said that time. It was between 8:00 and 4:00. He said 8:00 and 2:00. Not 8:00 and 4:00. 2 o'clock came and they still didn't arrive. I called him back and he said he didn’t know what to tell me and that I was gonna have to wait. I'm never gonna use Colonial Van Lines again because of that gentleman.

I like that Colonial doesn't farm anything out. They put the stuff in the truck, and then they move it from one to the other. They gave me a quote. When they got there, it never changed. It was exactly what they said. They moved it properly and quickly. Not only did they arrive on time, they were there early. They were also polite and careful. They didn't overcharge me. They weren't the cheapest but they weren't the most expensive. I'll be moving next year and I'm moving to Arizona from California. I'll be calling them and using them again. There are so many bad moving companies out there and I've worked with a couple of them. It's refreshing to finally find a company that does what they say.

Colonial was the most affordable option of the quotes that we got when we were deciding on our move. They were pretty helpful. They made sure that I knew what to expect and got us sorted for the most part. So that was good. I wish I would have known the exact timeframe for when our actual drop off delivery would be. But it's not an option and it's an industry-wide kind of thing. The Colonial reps were great. They got everything we needed, and made sure we had all of our paperwork together and on time. So that was good for us. The actual movers did a pretty good job. They were super friendly and really quick too. So I appreciated that part of things. They got the job done and we've moved successfully.

We didn’t have a good experience with Colonial. I thought that they would be doing the moving and that they had been in business for a long time. But that really wasn't the case. They subcontracted out to a third-party mover. They also told me, "Once you signed with Colonial, the price will never change." But I was charged $2,000 over my quote. Colonia Van Lines reached out to me by way of a Customer Resolutions team member who was able to satisfactorily resolve our issues with our interstate move. We have reached an agreement with the company for fair financial compensation for broken items and other complaints. Donna addressed each one of our concerns and really made us feel heard valued. Overall, Colonial Van Lines' communication was top notch.

Updated on 11/01/2023: After the debacle of the move, see previous review, Donna from Colonial Van Lines called us and did seem to understand that our move for $45k was a complete disaster, they offer us a 2k compensation for the 1/3 of our items broken or forgotten, the lack of reassembly, moving us a day late, and by a third company which didn't hold a permit certification for moving household goods!!! This is the way Colonial Vanlines makes extra money by hiring 3rd party with underpaid illegal workers, I would stay away from such company and when the investigation will be complete, we will review again.

Original Review: This was the biggest mistake I have made to hire Colonial Van Lines for a move from California to New Hampshire, they didn't show up to pack the items, their team didn't speak English but Russian, they loaded the items until 4 am in the morning missing the date of departure for the move, did show up with not the right truck and lied at multiple occasions, creating a bait and switch, charged us over $45,000 dollars to get our beloved furnitures, grossly loaded and 1/3 was broken or missing,,, as of today still missing and repaired with my own money, they shouldn't have a licence to move people, look at their reviews. They have the same type of occurrence; huge number of broken article, lack of customer responses, and missing pieces!!!

    Original Review: Sept. 16, 2023

Update 9/20/2023: I would recommend colonial van lines to anyone needing a long Distance move. The staff were helpful, returned my phone calls And very knowledgeable. All my Household belongings arrived safely And undamaged The gentleman that moved my furniture were more than accommodating and helpful.

I used Colonial for a move of 2,300 miles and the rep I worked with was very good. He was friendly and always answered the phone when I called. But they did exactly what they said they wouldn't do, which was to hire somebody else. When the movers showed up, they put the stuff in the vehicle, got it to the location, then they raised their price to $2,800 more or I couldn't have my stuff. That was the horror story that I told the gentleman at Colonial Van Lines and he assured me that they didn't do that.

He said the moving crew would show up at my house with this big truck that says Colonial on the side and that the Colonial Van Lines people would be the only ones who were going to help. He gave me quote and I got rid of stuff to make sure that I kept my items under what was actually quoted to me. I also prepaid everything. When I contacted Colonial about the problem, they said it was not their responsibility. When I told them I brought less stuff than what they quoted me, they said it was between me between me and this Garcia Moving thing. So I will never ever use these people again.

Other companies were doing it by the volume and the space in the truck. I found out later that Colonial priced things by the pound which is ambiguous. How would they know what my couch weighs? But at the end of the day, what mattered to me was that it was gonna cost me what I was going to pay for it. The rep with Colonial, Anthony, was well-trained. When I said I couldn't afford something, he respected that. He helped me reduce the cost while the other people resisted taking things off the order. He made every adjustment I asked him to make as far as the pricing and he assured me it was gonna be white glove service. But nobody wore white gloves. I was disappointed in that.

Otherwise, it went well. They hired two super nice guys. They wrapped everything and were very careful. My adult sons were there helping me. They were moving the boxes while these guys were packing. We set it up that we wouldn't be in their way and they wouldn't be in ours. At one point, my boys were struggling with something and those two guys that Colonial sent jumped in and gave them a hand. Later, they were struggling with the couch and my kids went in and gave them a hand. They didn't act like we were primadonnas and in their way. They were cooperative and nice.

I video-chatted with them, showing them every cabinet, every room, everything that was to pack, then they gave me an based on what they believed the volume and weight was gonna be like. They were spot-on because it was confirmed after the weighting of the truck. On moving day, there were four people in total. They made sure everything was taken care of. They answered all my questions and then got to work. So, that was a fairly good day on that side. I'd recommend Colonial. They were very helpful. Colonial Van Lines was very helpful. My first contact was Antonio and I drove him nuts. I changed my quote several times but he was very good with it. We moved from Washington State to Wisconsin and I was a little disappointed in how long it took to get the stuff. They picked it up on July 8th and they said it would be delivered anywhere between July 12th and July 27th, which was okay. It was stressed that it could be there within the four days so we made sure we were back in Wisconsin. But it didn't get delivered until the very last day, the 27th. But it was in the contract so I can't complain about that.

It was just getting updates towards the end was a little tough. The driver knew more than the dispatch did. They told me it was gonna be delivered one day and they gave me the driver's number to reach out to him. I did and he said he didn't know what they were talking about because he had two more stops and he was not gonna be at my house at 8 o'clock the next morning.

Colonial and their dispatch communication was not good. But I loved the fellows who picked up the stuff and the fellows that delivered were fabulous. Also, Elsie, who was the contact after the contract was signed and everything was done, was pretty good at reaching out to me every few days. But she'd say she'd call in two days and it'd be four or five days and I'd have to call her because she never got back to me when it got closer and closer to the delivery.

We got our delivery and I went through and I checked everything. I had an antique wooden rocking chair missing and the delivery men made a note. They said they would call it in and then I got a call from Elsie to see how it was. I told her about it and I got a call from somebody else who I thought was doing some type of survey. I told them I'd called and emailed Elsie. I have not gotten a response. The chair could have been delivered to somebody else by mistake because the driver had three deliveries on the truck and the people who got it just never said anything. I can understand that, but give me an answer and respond to my questions. I'd be kind of upset because the chair was given to me by somebody quite a few years ago. But things do happen and don't just blow me off.

We had a great experience with Colonial Van Lines. They were very quick to reach out at the beginning and get the initial estimate. When I initially put in the query, it was always contingent upon getting approval from my company that I'd be able to work full-time remotely from Florida while keeping my job in Virginia. Colonial Van Lines wasn't at all hesitant to engage and begin the journey while I waited another 30 days to ensure that I would be allowed to move. I got very quick responses back from Colonial, and we began work right away without formalizing anything until I got the official approval. As it got closer to the move, they contacted me again to go over things and readjusted the estimate as I discovered I had more boxes than I anticipated having.

Their estimates were spot-on and the price was fair, but it was a little more costly than I thought it would be going into it. I've done local moves before. This was my first multi-state move with the family. So, it was definitely worth the price. I definitely wouldn't have wanted to move four bedrooms by myself. We moved about 800 miles, from Northern Virginia to Florida, and the entire process was great. They set very accurate expectations. There were two separate crews. One crew loaded, then another one unloaded, and both were very professional. They were in the home for roughly four to six hours either packaging or delivering, and the only item that I saw had any kind of damage was a $20 kitchen trash can. It was a very small dent too.

One of the things that I liked about Colonial Van Lines is they kept us updated. The contact person was a good guy that kept us from the duration of the beginning before we moved, which was sometime in March all the way to our moving to Georgia in July. He told us about the prices, how things may increase if we do not book this specific amount of money and how much. And he kept on, he looked on site, he saw the real estate that we had, he saw what we had in our home. We were about to tell him everything in our home. He said, "Let me just pull up the site." So, he saw what we had and what was not packed yet and calculations. One of the things that caught our interest was the price. But at the end, Colonial Van Lines hit us with something big.

Most of our stuff was already packed. So, it was a matter of trying to determine what we would take and leave behind and dump. So, it was a matter of the boxes. We had our own everything including boxes and tape other than for the dressers. There are special blankets and tapes that they use, certain things that we couldn't offer for ourselves because we didn't know what specification is needed for all those other things that we needed.

Each time that we packed something, we would calculate, and we kept our own inventory plus what Daniel had already calculated for us. We didn't need that much of anything from Colonial other than the big blankets, the big tape, and certain things that Daniel decided, "Maybe we'll break it down for you before you move versus you doing it because at least we can see what kind of furniture and stuff or things that we have."

While we worked with Daniel with specific information, he geared towards what to expect, how much volume of weight and so forth that we would carry and what would happen at the depot from what he estimated and what we estimated as the boxes. We also two gentlemen who were small but strong men. They did really well with the big boxes.

One of the things that was disappointing and took up a lot of time about Colonial was they had paperwork which they had to fill out, and that took an hour and a half away from their time that they could have been moving. That was a wasted time. And they had to come back early in the morning, around 8 o'clock, which they were on time, which was good. So, they wrapped it up within an hour and a half time because it was the remaining. They had to spend time in a hotel and come back and leave our stuff at a hotel. He said, "Don't worry, we have cameras," which made me feel more comfortable. My son was young and this is his first experience handling such a big ordeal of us moving and Daniel was able to meet him where he was. Everything worked out fine.

When I was looking at another firm, they would send me spreadsheets to fill out to calculate things. My experience with Colonial was much easier because we just got on the phone and discussed it and that was it. It was a seamless process. I was doing my own packing and I started with 40 boxes and I ended up with 60 boxes. But that was understandable. The movers helped me pack up some of the last-minute items. The move was ahead of schedule. They were quick. It was a good process. I liked that it was the same driver. The driver would contact me directly and he'd tell me that he was an hour away. So I stayed more up-to-date with the driver than I did with customer service.

I went with Colonial Van Lines because the representative that first helped me with a quote followed up and was communicative in the beginning. But I would never use them again. There was lack of communication between the pick-up, and they said, “The movers are coming.” But the movers didn't come. They came the next day and sent one person to pack all my belongings for a five-bedroom home. He was also the driver, and it was weird. I felt uncertain about what was going on. I called but no one ever answered on customer service. Finally, somebody called me back and said, “It's logistics, ma'am.” They kept saying that to me. It didn't feel like moving is a big deal, and I felt unsure about what was going on because they were late. When they gave me the notice that they were coming, no one came. I moved my schedule around to accommodate that, so it was frustrating.

The company I work for paid for this service and they paid for a full service. So, they were supposed to move the stuff into the rooms that it went. I have a three-bedroom home. And I was told they would set my beds up, but that did not happen. I argued with them, but I'm by myself as a female and with three men. Only one of them was helpful, and he was the one that carried some of the stuff up to the third floor for me. But it was not a good experience. They gave the company I work for some credit for it. But it was a bummer. And even they moved my car, and they delivered it a day early, which is great, but I was on the airplane and they said, “Okay. We're here and we need to collect payment,” but I wasn't there so I had to pay over my phone. They left the keys and I had to assume it was fine. Do not use Colonial. I would not recommend them.

Coordinating the move with Colonial was easy. They had good communication. So, that was good. The day of the drop off, it was a little confusing about the payment. We were paying the outside company and it wasn't clear that that's how it was gonna work. It was a Saturday, so I couldn't get in touch with anybody. So, I paid and I was like, "Well, I guess this is right." Our stuff went into a storage unit, but a lot of the boxes were smushed. Our mattress was also in the storage unit but it was like the last thing they put into the truck. So, it had those marks of whatever they used to tighten everything so it's not moving around. Then one box of stuff smelled really bizarre. It smelled like armpit sweat. We had an end table that was pretty beat up. I probably won't be able to continue using it because the wood is now exposed and looks splintery.

When I spoke with Colonial's salespersons, I felt the security to make this movement with their company. We moved from Michigan to Minnesota and the salespersons were following the movement. They were talking with me and sending me emails. So, all the time, we were in touch and they answer me. But at the beginning, it was confusing because they used third-party employees and I wasn't expecting that. It would be great if they made the customer know that. Also, the first quote they gave me increased in the end from 40,000 to 50,000. But all the workers were kind and they did the job really well. I received three things with damages and when I asked about how to go with these damages, they quickly sent me the claims information and everything I need to do. I am just waiting to send the information because I'm having so much busy time. But that makes me feel good that they are providing me all the right information.

Moving is challenging and we had a rough start to our cross country move. However, Colonial Van Lines resolution team reached out and made an effort to make the situation better. Thank you Donna for your help.

    Original Review: Sept. 13, 2023

This was, hands-down, the worst experience we have ever had moving and I will never go with Colonial ever again. We're not people who do bad reviews, but it was a terrible experience. We've done three cross-country moves in the past six years and we went with other movers before and they went flawless. We only decided to go with Colonial because we were trying to save a little money. We did an inventory of the house and estimated the quote with the agent.

The day that Colonial told us they were going to arrive, we had a newborn baby and we were awake and ready to go, then they called and told us they weren't coming that day. They were coming the next day, so we had to change our plane tickets and notify our apartment complex. We were told we were going to get a partial refund and we never did. We got our stuff, but there were some that never made it. Our mover worked hard, but he left some stuff in our apartment.

    Original Review: Sept. 1, 2023

    Update 9/6:

She has been excellent at listening to my explanation of what I did not like about CVL. She asked me about any damages to my delivered items and asked if there are areas that I was not happy about as well as happy about. I gave Donna my candid opinion about CVL (what I liked, what I did not like, areas possibly could be improved). Donna was caring and attentive - thank you!

Colonial Van Lines was fine. The only thing I had an issue with was they charged me $1,500 for a holding fee. I'm not happy about it. They had a scheduled date of one week for potential move date, and then they gave me a delivery date. It was a window, and I pushed it out two days because I wouldn't be in Salt Lake City, but they told me that they were gonna have to charge me a holding fee. I told them that they gave me a window of four days for delivery, and now they were saying that because everything got moved up, and if I wanted to delay for two days of that window date, they were gonna charge me? Maybe all moving companies play this game. So, to me, it's a game that they play.

They brought a 40 ft. truck of which my stuff was loaded up to about 30 ft. Then they said, “Oh, we're gonna charge you by the weight.” But Colonial didn't even show up. It was their subcontractor. Yet on Colonial's website, their whole claim is, “We don't use third parties. We use our own.” So that's not true. They're no different than a broker. The paperwork and the scheduling were awful. But the work performed by the team was great.

I moved many times in my life. I moved interstate from New Jersey to California so I'm familiar with a long distance move. Companies usually send out a person to walk the house and estimate. For Colonial, it was a video call. So I walked around and did a video call, and then they estimated and came in. Of course, the video call doesn't pick up everything, and then all of a sudden with Colonial, certain items weren't on the list. So I said, “You gotta be kidding me, guys. So should I have walked carefully every square inch of the house?”

The subcontractor came in with a list of inventory, and I told them, “You're missing this. This inventory is incorrect. You put the wrong stuff in there.” So all of a sudden, they start adjusting it. It took about three hours to readjust and recalculate the moving cost while the other guys were sitting around in the truck. Finally, they came in and I was told that I needed to sign and pay $4,000 in advance or the movers won't start moving so I had to pay. There was a lot of stuff inconsistent that were different than it was originally promised.

    Original Review: Aug. 28, 2023

I was given a window of two dates. 48 hours before the move, I was told the movers would be here on Saturday between 12-5. I was concerned as the company closes at 5 on Saturday and does not open back up until Monday. I BEGGED for a contact number and all they would tell me was the driver will call before 5. No contact from the driver. Saturday goes by, no phone call. Sunday comes, again, no contact. Finally at 1:55 on Sunday, I get a call and am told a that my job was scheduled for Sunday between 12 -3. NOPE… I have it in writing it was suppose to be Saturday between 12-5. I do receive a call again on Sunday around 3 stating that it will now be Monday morning.

So let’s count how many excuses I have been given. 1) The driver is stuck in traffic (Saturday afternoon). 2) They had trouble on the last job (Saturday afternoon). 3) They are three hours from your house and will be there tonight around 8 pm (Saturday at 5:00 pm). 4) The truck broke down and they had to get another truck. 5) Your job was scheduled for Sunday not Saturday. 6) They are busy at the job right before you. They are only an hour from you and will be there Monday morning. Well… it’s Sunday evening and I’m anticipating receiving more excuses in the morning. I hope their packing is better than their customer service. Oh… AND I paid over $800 more for this company to move me based on their “high” ratings.

The moving crew from Jersey to pack up the stuff so it can be shipped down was excellent. As soon as they showed up, everybody got to work. I felt like everybody was moving and moving things. They moved as a team. Everything was great. The crew down here was a little shaky. I had two stops. The first stop was to my apartment and then the rest was to the storage unit. Donna helped find our keyboard and have it shipped to us. She also helped us get a decent settlement for our missing items. "I'm the Donna" from Suits really fits if you know the show.

    Original Review: Aug. 10, 2023

THIS MOVING COMPANY DOES NOT DESERVE THE AVERAGE HIGH RATING I FOUND HERE ON THIS SITE, WHICH IS WHAT MADE ME CHOOSE THEM. For over $5,000 they moved my things from Florida to Alabama. It was not that much stuff, and it didn't need unpacked in Alabama. We lived on a road not navigable by a semi in Alabama - so they said they would send a small truck and arrive on a certain day. They sent an e-mail the day before that said, no, it would be another day. The next day they didn't bother to reach out but a massive semi showed up at noon.

At that point, my things needed to be OUT so I had to go with the large truck. They put all my stuff in with others and put little white stickers on mine, which were barely indistinguishable from the little light blue stickers on the other person's items already in the truck. What about having stickers with a barcode and a scanner? Or even perhaps larger bright pink, orange and purple stickers???

Once arriving in Alabama I had someone meet them and they unloaded our things in our townhome there. When I arrived a month later - unbelievably LARGE items were missing. An 88 key keyboard on a stand, a mattress to one of the beds, a glass shelf to a bar, and some smaller items. In addition there were items there that WERE NOT OURS. A large mirror and a shrink wrapped bundle of Halloween items that I'd never seen before. They also left 8 moving blankets and 10 large bands for moving (don't these cost money?).

Of course I called and they then spent a lot of time telling me they had 100 days to pay me on my claim and likely I would get more than the 60 cents per pound. They also were NOT interested in finding out who the extra items we had acquired really belonged to. I texted the driver who said he had my keyboard and will ship it. Nothing yet. They just called the required 100 days later, and for my $600 keyboard and my $200 mattress and my $100 missing glass they are giving me a whopping $120! Yup, 60 cents on the pound. I thanked them very much for the screwing.

This was a simple job, and I frankly blame the company who are pushing and very proud of their driver who is nicknamed "Slick Willie" or "Fast Willie" or some such nonsense because he is so fast on the road. Yep - he was super fast zipping around like crazy with our things (zip zip zip), which might explain why it was so easy to lose such big items so easily. BUT THE REAL PROBLEM IS THE STUPID LITTLE STICKERS. I would have a hard time telling who's stuff belongs where with that system. Such an easy fix - big bright stickers or bar coded stickers. Big bright stickers would not break their budget. Come on!

All of this would have been prevented if the small truck they promised in the beginning had been the truck that arrived - then my items wouldn't have been co-mingled with others. Or perhaps if they had big bright stickers. Or perhaps if the driver and his crew slowed down for just a minute to double check the items. IF YOU SHIP WITH COLONIAL VAN LINES - EXPECT TO LOSE AT LEAST PART OF YOUR ITEMS - AND TO GAIN THINGS YOU DON'T OWN, AND TO GET PAID 60 CENTS ON THE POUND FOR YOUR TROUBLE.

Once I discussed it with my husband, we could decide within a certain amount of time, and then go ahead and book with them and pay a deposit. And that was what we did. They told us that we could cancel up until a certain point for a full refund of the deposit and we could also change the dates. If we needed the truck a little bit earlier or later, we could do that. We ended up needing to do that. It went really smoothly. I would recommend them. Whoever they picked was also wonderful. So, it was all handled over the phone and it was very easy. The process was great. The estimate varied a little bit, but I understand why. Every couch weighs a little bit different, every table weighs something different, but their standard use was fine. Everything was well-packed and well taken care of.

The movers called two hours prior to let us know that they would be arriving around a specific time. Then, on the day of delivery to the next location, they called in the morning and gave us a four-hour window, and then they called an hour and a half out and said, "We'll be there in an hour and a half." So, there was a lot of detailed communication. The whole experience was very easy.

Colonial met our deadline but their scheduling is a tough chore. It could be tweaked possibly a little bit. I get that it's best for them at the last minute to pick up jobs but we were told they would give the date two weeks out. Then it was maybe next week. And then we find out they're coming the next day or two. I run a business so I understand Colonial’s end of it but a last-minute notice on when somebody's coming is frustrating. Colonial subbed it out to another moving company and they couldn't have been nicer. I would have them over for dinner. They were fabulous, respectful, and took good care of our stuff. They were more than respectful of our age and us being women. I would use them a hundred times over.

I have moved five times or more and everything I own always gets a nip or scratch. It's just par for the course. Moving my own things, I do that. And with Colonial, we had no problems. All the people were very nice, except one. I just dismissed him immediately. I'm 59 years old and I probably had a kid his age and I just put him in time out. He was a little snippy, probably having a bad day. But other than that, everybody else at Colonial was as accommodating as they could be. It’s the typical response when they're putting you off. I called and I was happy with the way Colonial Van Lines treated me and how they explained things to me. Right from the get go, the moving coordinator and I clicked, so I continued with the relationship until we moved. It amazed me how without seeing any of my furniture, they did it enough, but just by telling them what I had, they knew what average weights were. I was sure they overestimated the weight on some things, but they equally underestimated the weight on other things. So, in the final analysis, it worked out. We were within 1,000 pounds of the anticipated weight of the furniture and belongings were.

I knew from the beginning that as Colonial was a broker as well as a mover, so they from time to time use the services of other movers. And in this case, they did. But the guys that showed up were very professional and wrapped everything up in blankets well beyond my expectations. They were in and out. I went through a lot of anticipation before they got there. It was three months from my initial contact with Colonial until my move, so I had plenty of time to worry. But I quit worrying after the guy showed up, and wrapped and loaded all my stuff up. When they picked up my stuff, they came in a smaller truck, and had to transload it onto an 18-wheeler. So, it got handled three times by them. They had nothing but respect for my belongings, so I applaud them for that.

Whenever I got excited about something, they calmed me down. So, they're professionals. They've been doing it for years. They know that their customers are concerned about their belongings. Everything was in good condition, and there were 90 boxes. I couldn't tell if there was damage to any of them, and several TVs that they left boxed up, so I didn't know about them until we unpacked them. But everything's working. I found one glass picture frame cracked in half. And so far, that's the only broken thing I've found.

We were supposed to be moving into a rental, and the rental people wouldn't allow us to move in so I had to put my stuff in storage. The guys had to unwrap it just like they were putting it in a home. So, it left me hanging. When it became apparent that I wouldn't be able to move into a home, the coordinator said, “Okay. We can store your stuff for you. But let me give you some advice. You get your own storage, because while we can store it for you, we can't guarantee, especially during the summer, when we would be able to get back to move you. And it would be much easier for you to get local movers to move you out of local storage. So in other words, you might have to wait a month for us after you have a home to move it.” So, I went right out and rented my own storage, and had local movers move it when ultimately we moved. And that was good advice. I'm having a good relationship.

When I called Colonial, the rep made me feel very comfortable getting the quote and setting up having to move across the country. They were on top of it. They would keep me informed of when things were gonna be happening. If I called them to ask questions, they were there or called back right away and answered all my questions. The only thing was I had one antique table that a couple of pieces broke off.

This is the worst possible moving company. Do not use. They quote you a price, take a down payment, don’t show up day of move, when they finally show they require a large cash payment. Then, they do not show up at the destination for at least 3 weeks with all your smashed items and want you to pay thousands more. The men unloaded the truck by throwing my brand new, nicely packed boxes on the street. 90%of my belongings were broken and smashed. This is the worst company. Horrible. Our move was from Ohio to Florida. We spent a month packing and organizing and they ruined everything.

Colonial's rep let me know when everything was happening. Oleg, the driver, and his crew of six that did the pickup did great as well. Then I met Oleg a couple days after for drop-off and he had a crew of three. They did very well, too. There were a couple of items that got a little bit of damage on them, but nothing we didn't expect with what we were trying to do. Then, the ending bill was 7% to 9% higher than the quote, but that was due to us asking them to wrap some of the furniture.

I told the rep what my timeline was for moving and what I was expecting, and Colonial was able to accommodate that. The movers were fantastic. They were super-fast, efficient and took care of my stuff. It was painless. Once they got all my furniture wrapped and ready to go on the truck, it was less than an hour. And they got everything on the truck. But they took their time prepping everything. So that was cool. They came earlier to pick up my stuff and then, they delivered it the day of. It was simple. I had communication issues though. I didn't get an update on the status of my stuff, and that made me a little nervous. I was trying to get a window of when it was gonna come and then literally 12 hours before they were coming was when I was told that they were arriving.

Colonial Van Lines called constantly, let me know where the driver was, and how long it would take. We had two people pick up and only one dropped off. And he worked hard. The final cost was a few dollars less than I was originally quoted. Because it was difficult on the phone. It was one of those, “Well, how many boxes?” And I said, “Well, I think I'll have this many.” And it wasn't a full house move. It was a couple of rooms and a bunch of tubs and boxes. The only problem that I had was the mirror for the long dresser was not anchored to the dresser when they moved. Otherwise, it was a good experience.

Colonial Van Lines gave me an estimate at first, and they weighed the truck and gave me how many boxes they needed. The rep was very nice and with knowledge. The guys came in, did the inventory, packed everything and loaded it up. They gave me a copy of the inventory sheet. And they took off. They went to the storage facility. They called me throughout the three months to see when would I be ready. And I kept rescheduling throughout that timeframe. When I was ready, they told me whenever I was ready to call them back, and they would deliver it at my convenience. The guys dropped the stuff off, and they took off. But they dropped off some other people's stuff. I called and told them, and they came back and got it.

The reps did okay. But my estimate was for $16,000 and the final cost was $22,000. A $6,000 difference is a lot and it came at the end when we had the movers starting moving things out. The people who came to move our things out of storage said it was a lot more. They had to pack more boxes but some of those boxes were just bigger boxes with our boxes inside of them. There were things that needed to be packed by the moving company and they did horribly. They took an antique wall clock, stuck it in a wardrobe box and piled about 150 pounds of dumbbell in that wardrobe with that clock. They put tape on the wood of antiques directly onto the wood. I don't know anything about moving and I wouldn't have done that.

I talked to Colonial when everything was said and done and we knew there was some damage. They sent us claim forms and as we're unpacking, we're collecting that information. I was honest with them and I said, "The packers were absolutely horrible. It seemed like they were angry because it was not the job they thought it was. It was much, much bigger than what they felt they were sold. They came unprepared."

Other than that, the moving company that moved the furniture into our house from the truck was fantastic. They went above and beyond and they were so polite. They wanted to make sure that they put our things exactly where we wanted them. They gave us advice on what looks damaged and what we need to get some photographs of. They were very helpful and nice.

The driver was great and the crew that helped load and unload was very helpful, nice, and respectful. There was some confusion with the items that were initially listed in the quote, which caused an additional hour for pickup. I was provided a follow-up spreadsheet with the items that should have been updated in the quote. That was the only headache. Overall, the move went as planned, which I think is more than I could expect.

Colonial is reasonably priced and they went from New England to the Chicago land area for us. The pick-up went very smoothly. Four gentlemen drove up from Maryland and picked up our stuff. They showed up at 9:00 and it was very quick, efficient, professional, and courteous. We had stuff that was set and ready for them to just take and others that they had to move from various parts of the home. The gentleman who I would say was the foreman of the crew was very good at explaining everything and showing us all the paperwork, what we were signing, and why we were signing. They packed everything very well and before noon, they were on their way.

We received a call a little thereafter letting us know when the delivery would occur and they showed up exactly when they said they would. It was a different crew that delivered and they were also courteous, professional, and efficient. We had some additional items that we included on the move after the quote, so we understood that there would be an upcharge but there were no surprises on the final cost. Everything went very well. I would recommend others to hire Colonial for their move because our experience was excellent and if we had to do something again, they'd be the first movers we’d call.

They took everything we wanted taken and packed up what was left to be packed. The moving crew was excellent. They went straight to my new house. Colonial is a good moving company. My only complaint with them was I didn't get very definite answers on when people were coming and how long it was gonna take the stuff to get to my new address. The only people that gave me good answers were the moving crew. They just gave me approximate dates and they wouldn't narrow it down at all. I got a phone call saying when they were coming that was not exactly what they said it was gonna be. They wouldn't pin it down to the exact time and date until the actual moving crew called me. It was close but wasn’t the exact date.

Getting everything scheduled was easy and pretty straightforward. There was a one-day gap between the pick up and delivery. They did the pick up and then I got up here and the next day, they did the delivery. They stayed communicating throughout the whole thing. The movers were really good. They were quick and easy to work with. They called in ahead. So, they were fine. But there was a fee that wasn't disclosed to me. It was a pretty significant increase. Colonial explained why. It’s just the person who did all the quote in the beginning did not tell me that there was a long-distance fee. But it was some ridiculously small amount of distance, like 30 feet from the point of pick-up or drop-off. So, they had to move the stuff. You get charged per foot. But I’d still recommend it.

They picked up on the first week of the month and I didn't get my stuff until the end of the month. I told them I was very upset and they would have to start paying me for keeping my stuff. Eventually, when it was delivered, the person who brought the stuff was very good and nice. My experience with Colonial was a good one so I would recommend people to use them.
