We chose Colonial Van lines mostly due to their flexibility and can-do attitude. They want us to be done quickly and on-time. I didn't have the luxury of waiting between five to ten days. It was last-minute and they made it happen. I called around and got about eight different quotes but Colonial was able to work with me at a reasonable final rate. It was an 800-mile move and we had enough stuff to go for a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment.

Their people all did a terrific job. I talked to about three different guys throughout the process because everybody was rotating through the weekend, but all three did a very good job. Johnny was very helpful, and so was Mike. The guys that were driving the truck and unloading it also did a very professional job. I wasn't there the day they unloaded, but from what I understand through my two family members, the crew showed care in doing protective packaging and picking things up that were fragile. They weren't just throwing things around and stacking them in the truck for the sake of it.

During the move, we had a little bit of a walk to go through because the building I'm in is doing some remodeling, and half of it got all the balcony torn off. There’s a specific construction area that we’re allowed to park in which was a little bit further away from the door than I would have liked. But we took care of business and kept them done. I'm a firm believer of taking care of people who helps take care of me, so I made sure to show them some thanks as well. Colonial Van Lines made it a point to be on time and professional about it - that's all what anybody, including myself, is paying for.

Colonial Van Lines said they were cheaper for the same service other moving companies gave. The guys who did the estimate said I had 4,750 pounds, but when they got down here, they said it was 9,000 pounds. I did have a lot of stuff, so I didn’t question it. The ones who assisted me during the move were okay. They came on time and wrapped up a lot of pictures and paintings for me. However, when they broke something off, they didn’t tell me about it. Also, they brought something that wasn’t ours. Somebody else called me up and told Colonial about it. They said they were going to get back to me and they'll ship it back to the person. The driver was efficient and friendly. He was the same person picking up and delivering, but the helpers were different guys. They knew what they were doing, though, so I've no complaints. Everything was fine.

I was in a pinch to find a house to move into so that I wouldn't have to put everything to storage. Fortunately, I found one and we were able to go straight from our house in Albuquerque to the one here in Fort Worth with no problem with the help of Colonial. They got a good price, they got back to me quickly, and they were available at a decent time. On the other hand, I called Bekins and they never even showed up or talked to me. Colonial had a very good and knowledgeable moving coordinator who handled everything. Our move went great. Their services were right on the money and everybody took care of me. I got to the house and they also got there the next morning.

I saw Colonial Van Lines on the internet and learned that they were frequently used by the military. Although we're not involved with the military in any way, it seemed like a good recommendation because they dot their i's and crossed their t's about procedures. However, there were so many people that I talked with at Colonial, and I didn't like that. They should have one person as an immediate contact who can see the client through the whole thing. It felt like there were too many people doing a job that one person could've done, and it wasn't a good feeling.

Also, I had trouble understanding the account manager, and that created a problem. There were times when she was unavailable too. Although she was very polite and tried very hard, it felt like the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. For example, she said the movers would come between 9:00 and 1:00, and they came at 4:00, and stayed until almost 10:00 at night and I was not forewarned. I stayed home all day waiting for them, and when they came, I didn't expect them to work that late at night. The same thing happened again too, and it seems to be a pattern where I was told on the arrival point, they would be there at a certain time, but actually arrive about five hours later. The nice thing was I was prepared.

So I called the call center and told the rep, “Now that I know everyone’s leaving from Maryland, I can tell you they’re not going to be there in the morning like you’re telling me.” The rep kept me on the line, called the company, and ended up telling me I was right. They weren't going to be there until the afternoon. I had to experience bad communication to demand from the people at the call center to be better at communication. I have nothing but accolades for the actual movers, though, as they were phenomenal and I'm happy about the price. It was reasonable and for that I'm grateful. But I don't know if I'd recommend Colonial in terms of their oversight.

Colonial Van Lines were very highly rated. Some of the reviews on the other companies looked fake but theirs seemed to be legitimate. We used them for our move from Chicago area to Cleveland area. We booked them with relatively short notice and they were accommodating. The moving coordinator was really helpful throughout. They followed up to make sure that the guys have arrived to move the stuff out, the truck had left and again that the guys had gotten there to move the stuff. They were really great in keeping in touch and keeping us informed throughout the process. The only thing that was a little bit unexpected was that they didn't have some of the boxes that they said they would have but that wasn't a big deal in the end. The movers were also really helpful. It was efficient and a very good experience so I would use Colonial again.

We moved from North Carolina to Florida and used Colonial Van Lines. They gave us an estimate that was in the middle - one was much lower and another one was much higher. I obtained the estimate over the phone which I really did not find it as satisfactory as when I had someone who actually came to the house and saw what it was I wanted to move. There was a lady who came on site and she was much closer to the actual cost than the fellow from Colonial whom I talked to.

It was extremely frustrating for me to have only dealt with people by phone. When you’re doing it by phone and that may be the new way to do it, it leaves a lot of miscommunication. Consequently a day or so before I moved, the moving company wanted me to give them more money since they said the estimate was too low. I felt that wasn't my problem. That was theirs because the assessment had been made by phone.

The only people that came to my house were the two movers who came in and packed and they were outstanding. They discovered there was a whole lot more to pack than had been estimated but they did an excellent job and I felt very confident in them. Some things broke but it wasn't because they weren't packed well. Things move around in transit and breakage can happen.

Overall I'm happy with my experience with Colonial because of the movers themselves. But if I recommended Colonial to someone, I would absolutely insist that they have someone come on site and give them an estimation.

I got along really well with Andrew, Colonial Van Lines' representative when I talked to him so I decided to get their services. He helped me with estimating my inventory. I used my iPad to take pictures and talk to him on the phone while I was doing it. He coordinated everything and came out within about 40 pounds. It was very accurate. Moreover, the movers did a wonderful job. They put it in a storage facility for about a week and then it was moved from the storage facility to the townhouse. It went well. Everything went perfect.

Normally, I would move myself but I can’t do it anymore. The move was about 300 miles and I had to shop around and find people to move me. My only request was that I move in on the day that was available for me. Everything went very well, overall, with Colonial Van Lines. It was a good experience because I couldn’t do very much myself and everything was done for me. The only problem I had was that I didn’t realize that there was a window of delivery, and I was getting my delivery for a couple of days later until the driver showed up. I wish it was explained a bit more that you could be pushed back to the end of the window. It caught me a little bit off guard thinking that I would get moved in on the 18th, and it took two days past it.

I did an online search and Colonial Van Lines was rated one of the top five moving companies in the nation. The move was from California to New Hampshire so it was across the country. The sales guy, Jimmy, was really good. He was the one who got me to sign up. Our initial quote was about $3500, however, we ended up paying about $9000 which was almost three times as much. I would definitely recommend folks to get an in-house estimate and not go by the inventory list. It would really help people out to get an actual person who comes in and takes a look at the stuff and determines a better estimate.

The person who assisted us during our move wasn’t around much. When we called her, she was sick. We emailed her, and she never responded. And then when we left her a phone number to call, she would always call me even though my husband was trying to handle some of the communications since I had to work as we were moving. That was pretty hard and frustrating at times. Also, it took a while to get an actual moving date, but they still met the contract which was within five business days.

Everybody who we were dealing with was actually not from Colonial Van Lines. The truck that came in to pick up our stuff was not a Colonial truck. It was another vendor who they hired. The people who were delivering our stuff here in Hampshire were also not Colonial, there were different loaders and local vendors. I wasn’t really happy with the experience, but it was the first time we’ve moved across the country so we made a lot of mistakes, too.

It was a small simple one-bedroom apartment move and they offered to have it on its own small box truck as opposed to being part of a larger move in a big semi. The moving coordinator who helped me estimate my inventory and obtain a quote was very pleasant and polite. I spoke with her many times because there were a few complications as far as scheduling, but I enjoyed getting to work with her. Everything was great. It was a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

I had a pretty long distance move from Syracuse to Charlotte which was 700 miles for a job. Oliver who was my moving coordinator was great. He made a detailed list and his assessment was right on. My estimate was way off but it wasn’t Oliver’s fault, it was mine. I organized everything in Charlotte so it wasn’t until I went back to Syracuse that I realized I had forgotten a whole bunch of things.

My account manager was great, too. If I needed anything, he was more than happy to guide and help me out. I wasn’t really prepared for the pickup though even if I thought I was. Everything was in uniform boxes but I didn’t have uniform boxes, so they had to pack a lot of the stuff. There was some surcharge there that I didn’t anticipate but I’m sure it was all spelled out in the contract that I signed so it had to be done. The three guys who showed up were just workhorses. They were pretty fantastic. They were turning out for about nine hours packing up the truck. They were also the same guys who unloaded a couple of days later, and they were really just on point.

There are two things I want to point out though. Recently, we noticed that my wife’s antique dresser’s back ended up being broken. There’s a piece of wood that is broken and it wasn’t put together properly. I don’t think that they had the right tools to put the furniture back together. I saw their tools and they didn’t have the right equipment to go ahead and do that.

There was also a communication issue between us. The English wasn’t so good enough to explain the actual terms and conditions of the contract that I was signing. So it was only a long piece of paper. One of them took great notes of all the boxes that he packed but I didn’t know what was in each box. He said, “Just sign it. We’ll get to it later.” I said, “I’m signing a contract. I have no idea what it was.” And as far as them being honest, they absolutely were. They were really nice and genuine guys. I didn’t feel like I was being swindled in any way. I just think that there was a language barrier there. Nevertheless, my experience with Colonial Van Lines was a positive one. There were just a couple of items that I think would need to be addressed as far as them having the right tools to do the job.

My move was from Minnesota to Florida. Price was the reason I went with Colonial Van Lines. Furthermore, I had read that they had some bad reviews before, and then they were under new management, and they appeared to have cleaned up their act. I had a bad experience with a mover before, and this move was good in comparison.

They were very prompt and kept me informed wherever they were, both when they came to pick up the stuff and when they came to deliver it. They did a good job of the things that they had to take care of -- the packing, taking the bed apart, had some mattress, and packing the glass. It was fantastic with my account manager. It was difficult doing the move because I was in the car, but we managed to adjust it to my satisfaction, so everything was fine. My relationship manager called me several times afterwards and she was terrific.

However, my request was that I needed a truck that was no more than 22 feet so it could fit into my driveway, and they did not do that. To pick up the items they gave me the smallest truck they had, but then they transferred to a different truck for the delivery, and it was too big to fit into my driveway. We managed to do it some other way. But it was touch-and-go for a while and I wasn't happy about that.

Moreover, they didn't realize that it took me four days to get here and trying to do teh transaction from the car was really hard. They did adjust things to my satisfaction, and so it worked out okay. The move was for furniture, but I had a lot of glass and I wish somebody would've come and looked at the items to be moved, instead of only talking with me on the phone. We could then have avoided having to argue about how they packed the items. Nothing broke and they did a great job as far as that goes, but it was more than what we had agreed upon. Also, one box that I had was apparently left out in the rain. It turned out to be glassware that we had packed and wrapped in newspaper, so nothing was broken, but the newspapers were all soaked.

It was excellent customer service from day one. They got me in touch with customer care unit and assigned me to my account manager. He took me every step of the way on how much it was going to cost and how many pieces I had, and fortunately, mine was an easy move because I just had around thirty boxes. He quoted me a good price and the delivery dates. He called every so often to keep in touch with me. He was excellent and very informative about what they were doing. They called both a day and an hour before to let me know they were coming so it was good.

I was very prepared. I packed my own boxes and labeled them. Their pickup and delivery team came and put their labels on the boxes that they took. They were very timely with the move and it didn’t take long at all for them to put my stuff on the truck - maybe 30 minutes tops. It was a cross-country move. They called and let me know that they were close to the delivery point and when they got there, I was there waiting for them. They did everything - checked everything often and signed papers. I had one chair that they put back together before they left. It was a good move. They're a great company and I would recommend them to friends and family.

The company is now under new ownership and seem like they are really trying to make things right with past disgruntled customers. They really wanted to make sure I felt valued and fixed the issues that we had prior. I feel good about listing this as resolved.

    Original Review: April 21, 2016

Colonial was great in the sale. They were friendly and much less expensive than their competitors. That being said, they called and said they had a moving truck in the area and asked if there was any way I could make 24 hours sooner than we had discussed. I agreed saying as long as they picked it up between 8:00 am and 10:00 am that would be fine. The driver came at 1:15 pm that day and told me that he told Colonial the day prior that he couldn't make that time frame. No one ever called to tell me.

Fast forward three weeks, I still haven't received my items despite the fact that we had a contract. My contact told me "I just realized you live way out in the boonies." I live in the mountains of Colorado and I think that if they take me they should probably know what they are getting into and not have that affect the delivery date. I am extremely dissatisfied for the amount I paid, the lack of communication and the lack of follow through.

The whole process with Colonial Van Lines was pretty good considering some of the horror stories that I've heard about moving. I had no problems at any point. The moving coordinator and the account manager were very good. While the actual movers were great. They really knew what they were doing. I'd definitely recommend Colonial Van Lines.

I went online and had called a couple of moving companies. David, the man that I talked to at first from Colonial Van Lines, wasn't pressuring me and said he's trying to call me back. But the others said "You only have to lock-in right now or else you're not going to get the discount.". So I chose them because everybody else was pressuring me. The move was from Mesa or Arizona to Minnesota, so it was about 1,200 miles. The only request I had was for them to pack them here, and they did that just fine. I was impatient so they gave me the information I needed and it turned out better than I had anticipated. The two movers we had were excellent, very agreeable and patient. I'd recommend them to other people.

Recently contracted Colonial to do the job. Ask me to pay 1/3 of the estimated cost before move. Colonial contracted Cal Van Lines to move me from California to Indiana. Come to moving, this Cal Van Lines asked me to sign another contract. Which is 80% heavier than Colonial estimation. I do know the estimated weight since I just moved 1 yr ago. Using that weight and add the extra weight on 1 yr purchase. The number should be less than 3500 lbs. Colonial estimation is 4300 lbs. This Cal Van Lines estimated 7000 lbs. This Cal Van Lines came, 12 pm, then the truck is full already. They took bunch of other customers stuff out of the truck and spread all over my and neighbor's front yard. Looked like a mess. After 7 hrs, we could not wait anymore, we packed all the boxes before they came. They packed only 3 things. Then they overcharged ridiculously on packing. They also tied other customer mattress on the back of truck wrapping by plastic.

Wife and I cannot wait for all these people wasting our time, so we left, and asked them to finish up. So we have no idea what they did to our stuff. Then 2 days later, Colonial called said my weight is 5700 lbs. I told them it is impossible. So they suggest re-weight. I said "fine". But I need to witness the weight at weight station before they unload, and reassemble. Colonial agrees, but no email documentation. I want to witness the re-weight before and after. Otherwise, this Cal Van Lines can add weight on the truck, go to weight station, weigh it, so a heavier number will show up. Then take the weight off and store somewhere, then unload to my house, then go to weight station again and re-weight so big weight will show up.

Not only that. Colonial told me, I have to pay the difference based on 5700 lbs, before they unload. Never heard of it. What happened some piece went missing?

Colonial said if the weight came out lighter, they will reimburse me the difference. I asked Colonial to put it in writing. So far after 40 hrs, I still have not seen the writing yet. We shall wait and see how dishonest these 2 companies will do. If it is solved in professional matter, I will be ok. But personally, I will suggest this company to anybody from what I have seen so far. I will keep you posted.

Colonial Van Lines was responsive and had competitive rates. The coordinator was very helpful, and he got back to me at a reasonable time. My move was delayed by about three weeks so he was very good with keeping in contact with me and working with my move schedule. He went over everything for the quote, though things ended up being a little more expensive than I had planned. That had to do with items that I decided to not drive and put on the truck, so I was fine with it. Milan was a nice guy and he had two other gentlemen who helped him. They ended up having a slight delay in the delivery by a couple of hours, but I later found out he was coming earlier than he had planned. I needed to get additional payment from the bank since the truck weighed heavier than initially quoted, but he wasn't grumpy about waiting for me at the storage facility. It worked out very well.

    Updated review: Dec. 7, 2016

CVL has since reached out to me to resolve this issue. They are under new management and have offered a resolution that is reasonable and acceptable.

    Original Review: March 10, 2016

CVLRD fail to serve as a trusted agent per previous claims. The alleged CVLRD provided me with incorrect and inaccurate information from day one of the move. The agent failed to provide me with the name of the moving company, gave me incorrect information on the status of my goods, informed CVLRD used the moving company before as evidenced by lack of knowledge on the movers and inability to communicate with movers. The agent finally gave me the name of the alleged moving company the day my household goods were thrown out of a small Penske truck. The movers informed me that they had had an accident along the way and that my household goods were damaged while they transferred my goods along side of the highway.

Immediately after the arrival of my goods, I made several attempts to contact Consecutive Moving and Storage, only to gain contact with someone that stated "I don't speak any English". So I want to know, why a broker? To communicate lies? To offer false hope and information? I could have hired Sanford & Son and received better service. It was on this day that CVLRD agent later informed me that Consecutive Moving and Storage had given my household goods to someone else to drop them off.

The individuals that delivered the good were not a moving company as evidenced by the way they threw my goods and the fact that they were in a small Penske truck. Not to mention that they were laughing and playing with a female passenger the entire time. The only thing the broker did was assure that they and the movers took my money. The broker and movers got a healthy amount of money while I am left with a house full of damaged and broken goods. My issues are with CVLRD and whoever moved my goods. I nor CVLRD know who actually moved my goods during this transaction. I was told by CVLRD that they are not liable because they are only a broker. Well, who is liable? Who am I to seek out? I don't know because I was given false information from day one.

The only thing that I do know is that: I contacted CVLRD to handle the move. CVLRD made it very clear that they are not liable. My expensive furniture is ruined. I paid thousands of dollars out of pocket to CVLRD. Why if you are not liable... what did I pay CVLRD for? I almost lost my new job because of the problems encountered during the move. My parents' jobs were in jeopardy as well because of them taking off to assist with movers who did not show up as promised. My parents spent moderate amounts of money traveling to and from Texas to help with my move. I had to pay for lodging and clothing to prepare for my new job.

Updated on 12/02/2016: In January of this year I made the biggest move of my life & I used this company, like most of everyone who used this company I was put in a bad situation with this company that I spent two months trying to resolve but never reached a resolution. Well in September I was contacted by the new management with a settlement, I verbally accepted the offer after having discussions with another person that suffered loss of property in this move as well.

After not hearing anything from them I contacted Al in November & he assured me that I would be getting a call from Christian in an hour, which never happened. I have tried to reach Al numerous times since this conversation & I am never able to reach him except the one time I have a different name because I knew my calls were being screened. I am glad that some of you have reached a resolution with this company but I am very shocked at the unprofessionalism that this new management has displayed.

I had not contacted this company since February but for them to reach out to me in September & open up one of the worse experiences of my life, & then take me back down the same road further verifies that this company is STILL and will ALWAYS be nothing but a scam. It just has a different cast now and I am going to be sure that the word get out on this company because nobody should have to go through what myself or anybody else has went through with Colonial Van Lines. No matter what the resolution is individuals still lost valuables that can't be replaced. I have included pictures just to give you a glimpse of the damage that was caused to my furniture.

As a single mother I work hard to have nice things & strive to put those morals in my children, however Colonial Van Lines have taught me that no matter how hard you work there are still scamming companies that will do and say anything for your hard-earned money. Although they have changed management not much has changed about their untruthful, unethical, unprofessional business.

The contract negotiation was fine and straightforward. I got exactly what the rep said I was going to get, and I appreciated that. However, the moving coordinator didn't really contact or look out for me. They didn't check up on things and I didn't like that. Things didn't go exactly as they should have which was okay, but nobody gave me the heads up. But the people who did the move were excellent. I've had a nice experience with Colonial Van Lines. The guys put the boxes of clothes where they were supposed to where they told me to put it. They were very helpful and cordial. I just wanted them to take it out of the storage and bring it to my apartment. It was sitting in storage for a while because I was going to get a storage place, so I moved it from New York to the storage unit. The manager told me that location required me to have storage, so it stayed in storage up in New Jersey. Then they moved it from New Jersey down to my new apartment. It stayed in New Jersey for only a little more than a month because I moved out of New York on October 31st and moved into my apartment and had it delivered on January 14th. Jacky, the moving coordinator, was a very nice man. I had no problem with him at all. He was very sweet and helpful. He gave me a good deal on the storage. He gave me one month and then he charged me full price.

The only drawback was Colonial Van Lines damaged some of my clothes. I was not happy at all. I submitted a claim, only to work back as I forgot to put the pounds on the claim form, so I don't know if they're going to reimburse me. I forgot to take a picture with the damage to my two boxes full of clothes. There was water in the bottom of the box. I had to throw out a couple and I had to re-wash everything. When I complained about it to Jacky, he was not very pleasant about it but he wasn't nasty. I just felt I should have had better respect and he should have been more cordial about it.

Colonial Van Lines got the job done. My daughter's father passed away and we were trying to get some of his stuff. I got them for their availability to do it in the time frame. Their moving coordinator, Lyon, was very sweet and nice. I didn't know exactly what was coming because it was packed up from the lawyer, and the actual amount was almost double the price but I don't know if that was their fault. We were trying to talk to the lawyer and the lawyer was not the one who packed it, so there were a lot of things that came that shouldn't have. It didn't really fall on Lyon that there was more weight than expected and ended up being almost double.

I feel bad because the moving process wasn't friendly. It was a very time-sensitive situation, so there wasn't a lot of communication that was going on on my part. It was more on the lawyer needing to get things in, so there were three parties involved: me, Colonial Van Lines, and the lawyer who did not pack the stuff up. It wasn't anybody's fault but Colonial Van Lines did call and check in. Their rep was good about communicating with me during short conversations and she understood the situation.

But on the way down, there was some stuff that were left behind and had to be mailed separately. Also, they lost some of the pieces to the bed. Several little screws that go inside of it are missing and we can't replace them unless we go through the company. But other than that, everything seemed to be fine. Nothing was broken, and everything was well taken care of from what we can see. We haven't unpacked everything and I don't think anything was damaged during the move. I would recommend them on that aspect because they were gentle and careful, and customer service-wise they have been helpful as well, but I would tell people to shop around because I'm not 100% satisfied. Everybody else seems to be good.

    Reviewed Feb. 24, 2016

I started out this process in November talking to someone named Andrew, my initial contact with Colonial Van Lines, and he was very friendly and kind. He explained the fact that his inventory process was done by phone and not by sending a person out because they have a great tool that will estimate very close to the approximate weight of the items to be moved. I spent two and a half hours too, and one half hour on the phone with Andrew going through my house, and he came up with an estimate of 6,500 pounds. And I said, "How much is that gonna cost?" And he said, "$4,300 to move." And I said, "Sign me up."

I came to find out that when I tried to make contact with Andrew after a couple of days, he had been either promoted or demoted. He got some other job within the company and was no longer available. So now, each time I call or each time I'm called by Colonial Van Lines with very little continuity between people. Every once in a while, I talk to the same person twice and each time I talk to them, the story was a little bit different.

Then there was an additional inventory that needed to be taken. We went back through several different items, and the estimate changed from 6,500 pounds to 7,300 pounds. I wanted to make sure. Andrew, as well as everyone else from Colonial said, "We like to estimate high because we don't want our customers to be surprised about the fact that when we get there and there is a lot of additional weight that wasn't expected and the cost goes up." And I get it.

I have a high dollar value item that I was going to have Colonial move and wanted some additional insurance for that. And I was told, "No problem." So I started working with the outside insurance agency who said, "We can come up with a good insurance program for your high dollar value items." It turned out that they were going to charge me a little bit more than $400 for the moving insurance. But I said, "Fine."

It came back after a couple of weeks, almost a week before the move. The insurance company called me back and said, "Are you ready to sign for your insurance?" And I said, "Yeah. No problem. Everything’s packed and ready to move." And they said, "We have to make you understand that anything that we insure has to be packed by the movers themselves." But that was never made clear and I had packed everything in a way that it wasn't going to break. So for me to open that back up and then allow somebody else to come in and pack it was ridiculous. Colonial needs to be upfront and tell me what the requirements are so that I don't end up spending a lot of time doing something that is counter-productive. Nobody told me that I shouldn't pack my high dollar value items so that it can be carrier-packed in order to be able to insure it.

I decided to go without the insurance because I wasn't going to unpack my high dollar value items. I made arrangements for them to show up on the 15th of January, and that did not happen. They showed up finally on the 17th, which is interesting because when I was talking to Andrew and his co-workers, the pickup date was solidified. It was the drop-off date that could be a window. That was an issue as well, but I realized that road conditions and everything play into the drop-off date. The pickup date was definitely on the 15th, which didn't happen.

Two guys roll up in a U-Haul truck and say, "We're here to move your stuff." And I said, "Fine." I understand that trucks break down. But these guys don't have a single identifying paper or badge to affiliate them with Colonial Van Lines. Their paperwork says, "VIP Moving" or VIPMo, but I don't know who VIPMo is. And I understand that Colonial can be a broker and they can subcontract out, but who at Colonial Van Lines tells me that VIPMo is the subcontractor? No one. So these guys say they're from a company that I don't recognize with a U-Haul van and they want to put my life into the back of that van and drive away.

I had an issue with that so I tried to call people. They said, "Here is our DOT number. You can look it up." So I did. I looked up their DOT number and it said "VIP Moving has one truck and one driver." I called the number that's associated with the DOT listing and the guy picks up and I said, "I've got a couple of guys sitting here trying to tell me that they're here to move from your company." And he said, "Yeah. I'm the owner/driver and those guys are there to pick up."

I said, "How is it that a DOT license that is issued to you for one truck and one driver, and you are that driver, has an associate drive up to me and say he's gonna pick up my stuff?" He says, "I've got more than one truck and one driver. I'm just kind of busy and can't keep up with stuff." And then I was like, "You know something? I can just see all of my stuff getting loaded up into this U-Haul van and then heading south. And then all of my stuff is on eBay somewhere."

This was a catastrophe waiting to happen. So they can't prove who they are and I try to call Colonial Van Lines. But it's Saturday and no one's in the office. So I go to voicemail and they say, "Call us back on Monday." Are you kidding me? These guys are standing here right now. They want to go with my stuff. Who am I supposed to talk to?

One of the reasons that they showed up late to my house to pick up in the first place is because “they forgot to weigh the truck.” So they had to go find a CAT scale to weigh the truck. When I checked the CAT scale slip that they showed me, it was from the previous day. It wasn't from the day that they showed up and that made me suspicious. Also, when I called the driver a couple of times, he called me to say, "We're on our way." I checked the DOT listing and then I called. Guess who picked up the phone? Jason, the owner and driver. I said, "Jason. Interesting. I'm standing right here next to Jason." He says, "His name is not Jason." Now, I've got a U-Haul truck with a driver who's giving me a false identification and no identification from Colonial Van Lines.

So I have these two poor 25-year old kids in tears in front of me because I called the police on them because I think that they are here to rob me. They're swearing up and down that they're just there trying to make a buck, and they stayed there waiting for the police. That's what convinced me that they were probably legitimate in some way, shape or form, but certainly not from any paperwork or regulatory standpoint.

We come to an agreement that they're gonna move my stuff regardless. They said, "We'll just move your stuff. We don't want you to feel like you're gonna get ripped off." I said, "I can’t not let you try to do this." This is how broken their system is. The two kids that are sitting in front of me had to pay for the U-Haul to come and get my stuff, but their company didn't even cover that truck. They’re out-of-pocket for the U-Haul. If I told them to go away, they would be out-of-pocket $3,000 for a U-Haul truck.

So they load up all of my stuff and off they go. They drive away and I'm like, "I sure hope they find Idaho." I asked them how they were getting to Idaho and they said they didn't know. They had a destination and they said, "We just plug it into the GPS and drive." I've been around a little bit longer than they have but I like to know where I'm going so I can figure out the best route. But they didn't care. I let them depart and spend another night there in Antioch before I hit the road. I hit the road the next day and I get up here and called them to see how they're doing. And they said, "We're okay."

They spent a day just in traffic trying to get back out so that they could go to a CAT scale. If they had headed north on a freeway, they would have found a CAT scale. There's one in Fairfield. "No. We're gonna go into San Francisco." That's why they took three days getting up here. When they arrived, they couldn't get the truck into the driveway. It's not an easy drive to get into that house. It's a little bit off the road and has got a couple of curbs to it. But the problem was there was snow on the ground, and they had bald tires on their U-Haul truck. I asked them if they'd driven in snow before, and they said, "Yeah I'm from New York. I've driven in snow."

We had six inches of snow on the ground and this guy was clueless. I ended up backing their truck into the house. They unloaded everything and there was very little damage. They actually did a really good job of driving the stuff up. So they took their time and made sure that most of my stuff came up in good shape. But when when they got here, they said, "We can't deliver your stuff until you give us $5,000." When I first said, "I want you guys to come and get my stuff," Colonial Van Lines said, "Okay, we need a deposit." And I said, "How much do you need?" They said, "$1,650." I said, "You got it," and off it went. When they got here, they said "We need $5,000 to unload your stuff." So where did the $4,300 estimate go?

The answer is, "You know that 6,500-pound estimate that we gave you on the weight of your stuff and then we upped it to 73? You were actually closer to 11,000 pounds." I answered, "You mean that 11,000 pounds that you guys use, that very high-speed calculating device to figure out how much weight I was moving, you estimated that to be half as much weight as I was actually moving? How does that happen? How was that even legal? You guys are absolutely misrepresenting the bottom line so that you can get somebody into a contract, and then demand payment because you can hold their stuff hostage in the back of a truck."

I paid them $5,000 cash because they can't accept anything else. They deliver my stuff, can't get into my house, can't get back out of my house and I had to drive the truck in and out of my house because they couldn't do it. They finally drive away, and in the process, I get Colonial Van Lines calling me and saying, We'd like to ask you how satisfied you are with our service." Really? Because guess what? I have this conduit through which I can really express my opinion about how I feel they handled my situation.

And since then, I have been in contact with a very lovely woman named Marjorie who is saying, "We want to make it right. Here's $250." I replied, “Really? Marjorie, you're a lovely lady and you're really trying hard. But $250 doesn't even scratch the surface." The last phone call that I've had with her is "What's it going to take to make you a happy camper?" I said, "The fact that all of these stuff happened is unbelievable. That you guys would operate at this level and then expect a positive rating from any customer is unfathomable to me. However, if you want to make me a happy camper, how about you give me my deposit back because I'd given you now almost $7,000. Then we'll call it even because I'll be good with that." She said, "I can't guarantee anything. But I'll start working on that for you." I am very dissatisfied.

Colonial Van Lines has some of the better reviews online, so when my mom was relocating from California to North Carolina, we got them. The gentleman that I initially booked to do the shipping was knowledgeable, friendly and knows what he's talking about. Thomas did a good job of explaining the procedure, what the cost would be, the breakdown and when it would have to be paid. All my mom's stuff was in a storage unit here and it got picked up from storage and taken directly to her new place in North Carolina. However, it ended up being a bit more than we had expected. Evidently, that was based on weight. They estimated it lower than what it actually turned out to be, so I was a bit disappointed that it was quite a bit more.

Also they subcontracted it out for a separate company which I was not aware of initially, and I wish I had known that. That should have been disclosed a bit more clearly because the reviews that I looked up were on Colonial and not on the subcontractor company that I didn't know anything about. But just the same, when they showed up, they were professional, quick and got the job done quickly. Everything got there in one piece so it's good. Colonial Van Lines was, overall, efficient as expected for a nationwide moving company.

They answered all my questions and gave me a quick estimate over the phone. They got my stuff there much sooner than what they had first anticipated and actually almost beat me there. They were extremely good, and nothing got damaged, which is unusual for a move. I couldn't have asked for anything more perfect.

I switched jobs so when I moved I contacted Colonial Van Lines. They were the least expensive and the pickup were great. The guy let me know when he was going to come and we met there. The quote was as good as it could be. I did not know, nor did the estimator, how many books I had so my material was heavier than expected, and it was half as much as was originally estimated. However, the folks who delivered my materials did not come within the window of time they were supposed to. They did not let me know until after the window of time was passed, what their new time estimate was. When I gave my feedback, the guys who delivered said "We can't do anything about it. We're not supposed to call you 'till we're an hour away. So, we waited 'till we were an hour away." Also, I still have not determined if I'm going to present a claim for the things that were broken in the move.

He took time to make sure I understood everything he said and the services and expectations he set were accurate. The account manager who assisted me during the move was also great. The only problem I had was I was told I would have 24 hours notice before pick-up and I asked them to not only call me but to also call the family that lives there. Unfortunately, they only called the family that lives there and on the day that they were going to pick up the furniture, I got a call and said that they will be there in 20 minutes. I had to fly home to California so I wasn't there when they came. But the two guys that unloaded the furniture and brought it into my house were sweet and friendly.

My wife had a job at a college so we needed to move from Chicago to Delaware. I researched and went to a website of a company providing names of different moving companies. I got calls from four or five other companies and their service description. I also used some online evaluations then I decided to go ahead with Colonial. I picked Colonial out of eight other companies that sent me their proposals. The agent I spoke to sounded to be professional.

I told the agent my inventory and I summarized them. Colonial's service is based on weight so he gave me an estimate and we went that over a couple times. However the pricing given to me wasn't accurate. I ended up paying almost 50% more than the original quote and I wasn't really happy with that. I would understand if it was just 20% more than the original.

I will definitely not recommend Colonial, because the price is important, but other than that I didn't have any bad experience with them. They're a very professional company. They told me it's gonna be between 4 and 14 days, and it really took 14 days for me to get our stuff, during which I tried to figure out where my stuff are and they were very responsive and got back to me in a timely manner. They also did a good job to wrap up my things when I moved out from my old place and moved in the new place. And other than one of my bookshelves, everything came in one piece which is good. The top of one of my bookshelves was broken but that's okay.

I lost my job in California and decided to move back to Texas because I have family here and it's more affordable. I interviewed Bekins, North American, and Colonial and chose the latter to help me with my move. My decision to go with them was based a little bit on price but mostly on the salesman Louise who made me believe that they were going to do a good job.

Louise was a great salesman. I walked through the house and described everything in every room to him and then he did a preliminary estimate. But in the end, I noticed he had forgotten to include my garage. So I called them to book the move and told them two things: I was not going to move my appliances and they had missed my garage. And so we did an update which surprised me because I thought with the appliances out and the garage going in, it'd go up a few pounds. But it went up by ~1500 pounds, taking away the refrigerator, washer and dryer and adding the garage content. That put them a little more than Bekins, and a little bit less than North American. In the end I still went with Colonial and the guys driving the truck were great. However the account manager was awful.

They're supposed to weigh the truck empty then weigh it full and send me an email with the total weight but the account manager could never give me that. He couldn't tell me where it was, what the weight was and what the final cost was going to be until about two hours before it arrived. That was very disappointing, and the problem with that is I've learned in my professional career that if you don't tell people faster information they make up their own and they usually go to the worst possible case.

So, I had this envisioned in my mind, they lost my stuff because they couldn't tell me where it was! I had this vision my stuff being sold out of the back of the truck at the Mexico border somewhere. Then finally I got a phone call saying, "Hey, we're gonna be there tomorrow morning. Have cash." But it was two days later than they were supposed to originally deliver.

This is my eighth cross-state, cross-country relocation. So, it's not like it's my first time ever moving and thought the world was going to be perfect and it wasn't. I knew some stuff was going to go wrong, but wow! I want people to know what Colonial does, I've figured it out. They don't know anything, except to go and hire another company. And once they hired that other company, they completely divorce themselves. That's why that guy didn't know and couldn't tell me anything. The other company wasn't giving him any information. But **, they take 10% or 20%, why wouldn't they do something?

I need to transfer because of work and the quote Colonial Van Lines gave me was about $2000, which was less expensive than the other ones. But the quote wasn’t very accurate and it ended up costing us about $1000 more than that. It ended up being around the same price that it would have been from any other moving company. It left a little bit of a bad taste, but it was a move across the country so we weren't expecting it to be a painless experience.

Everybody that we worked with was very nice. I talked with the moving coordinator over the phone and they had me go through the items that we had and what was needed to be moved. The account manager was also helpful. She didn’t give us a ton of good information as to when the movers were going to be there or not, but I don’t think that was her fault. And the movers that came and picked up our stuff were great. They were good workers and very kind. It was just that it took a week or longer to get our stuff than they originally told us.

And as other companies had these little issues, I realized he was right and he was the one that was honest with me so I cancelled the other mover and went with Colonial Van Lines.

Colonial Van Lines promised a lot to me from the beginning but very little came through. The movers in the truck were awesome, they were the easiest people to deal with. But the rest of them, we wouldn't recommend. We knew we took more than we expected so the fees of the move went up, but we were not able to leave town as expected because the driver showed up late in the afternoon two days after they were supposed to and then packed all night long. Then when we arrived at our destination, they gave us a window that it would be six days, but it was another six days after that when they arrived. And, I lost a lot of my valuables including a whole collection of wristwatches that I had. Also, my weeder never showed up. And when they put the stuff together in the home, a lot of the stuff were not working properly and my bed was damaged.

I would never recommend them to anybody. I would hire a much more high-class company that would tell me straight up what the deal was. They had old rundown equipment, the truck was breaking down and were stuck in a place for days. The contact on the company's end wasn't bad and it's nice that they can console you with words, but when I told them I had stuff that belonged to somebody else at the house, they said if I could send it? No, I'm not going to send anything. They cannot find where my box is that says “Paul’s Personal” anywhere. And I was really disheartened because the guy had promised me the moon on the phone and it seemed like a car hustle to me.

It was not a pleasant experience with Colonial Van Lines. I talked to them once on the phone and told them what the issue was and they wanted me to fill out a claim form and send it back to them. I don't know how many thousands of dollars worth of stuff never made it here, but the some of the stuff that did make it wasn't any good. I paid quite a bit of money to be totally dissatisfied. Because we moved from California to Florida, and we were here five days before the expected delivery date, we didn't have any clothes or anything until two weeks later. It hasn't been a good thing.

And the only thing that I needed was for them to email the final amount that I paid because I need to give it to my employer but nobody did. I went with Colonial because they gave an estimate of 2000 whereas another company gave me 3000. But by the end, these guys charged me more. So, maybe I made a mistake and should go with the other company. My boss is paying that so it was not a big deal for me, but for other people who are doing a move, Colonial should have a better estimate.

Not happy with Colonial Van Lines. They need to get someone who knows how to estimate the cost of a move. In the end, the move cost me an extra $2100, and that was because the gentleman who initially estimated the move was so far off. The sad thing about it is I was told by many people not to go with a broker. And this wasn’t my first move. This was my first move that I ever went through a broker and I will never do that again. I asked the young man that quoted me about the brokerage because I had heard from other companies -- I had five estimates and Colonial Van Lines was not the lowest, they were in the middle. If I had gone without a broker and gone through a regular van line, I would have been much happier because they probably would have been more on the ballpark of what the move was going to cost me.

The broker was way off on estimating packing my curio cabinets. He kept calling them China hutches. And I said, “They're not China hutches. They're curio cabinets. They have glass all around them.” And that makes a big difference because when the movers came, they had to use a lot of material, cutting up boxes to enforce all the glass. Also, when the movers came in and started looking around, they said, “You needed so many picture boxes for your pictures.” Well, that was not true because I had large pictures, and they had to cut boxes and literally make boxes for them to fit into. So I used a lot more cartons than what they estimated. The young man who was doing the packing for my floral arrangements was not good.

But overall, I was very happy with the movers. Unfortunately, because of the weather, they weren't able to get to me the day they were supposed to arrive nor were they able to deliver my furniture the day they were supposed to. So that wasn’t their fault. Also, the three young men on the drop-off were excellent. I would use them again.

I'm a Macy employee and I believe in customer service. And the broker that I spoke to said all the right things but he really does not know what he's talking about. He told me that he had been doing this for quite some time but to be off by $2100 on the packing is a lot. I would have understood if it would have been off on the weight, but it ended up they had to use so much more packing. It was not a good experience, and I would never recommend Colonial Van Lines.

Also, because they delivered on a Sunday, they kept telling me that I had to either have a cashier’s check or cash or a money order. This was when North Carolina got the snow and the state shut down and I couldn’t get to a bank. The gentleman from the moving company said to me, “Well, we'll take a credit card.” And I said, “Really? Colonial Van Lines a hundred times told me that you wouldn't take a credit card.” It also cost me another 10% because I was using a credit card, but that wasn’t my fault. But if I wanted my furniture off that truck, I had to agree that I would charge it on my account and give them an extra 10%. So the entire experience with Colonial Van Lines was not good and I would never recommend them.

My moving experience was so bad, I created a Yelp account just to warn others. We had issues each step of the way, and once you sign the contract with Colonial good luck getting your representative to return your calls, and don't expect anyone else to try to help you either. We were given a 2 day moving window and told we would find out at least 5 days before our move day, the actual date. We found out the night before at almost closing time, after multiple calls a day for 5 days straight. We booked our move with a binding agreement on weight (based on a visual estimate). Everyone I spoke to except the manager in the booking department told me it was impossible to have a binding estimate based on weight. I'm not sure if other representatives didn't have access to view my contract, or if they just didn't read it.

But it's hard to have any confidence in the customer service area, when they can't answer basic questions about your contract. One reason we booked with Colonial was for their insurance. After we booked our move and signed everything, and passed the 5 day window to cancel, we were informed Colonial's company they used for insurance would not cover our move (even though we had been told they would.) Colonial outsourced our move to another company and that company they booked was going to store our belongings in a building without liability coverage. Too late to cancel, we had to find third party moving insurance on our own. We were told we would be packed and moved in one day (this was to pack everything, but we packed 80% of our things). The day of the move we expected the moving company between 8 and noon. To our surprise a different company showed up on our door step.

We had been given a company's name and amount ahead of time for the cashier's check, but apparently they changed the company the day before the move and just didn't inform us. The movers also showed up around 5:30 instead of between 8 and noon. All day as we were awaiting the movers, no one at Colonial could tell me anything except "your representative is on the other line, and she will call you back when she has a chance!" We didn't pack our dishes because we didn't have the special double corrugated dish pack boxes. But to our surprise, the movers didn't bring any dish pack boxes. They just packed the dishes in regular boxes - our belongings are still in storage, but I am nervous to see how our dishes survived. The movers said they would be back the next day by noon, but showed up at 2 PM. They said they would be done by 7 PM, but finished at 1 AM the next morning.

The delays by the movers caused us to have to change hotels for our commute to our new location, cancel appointments to see houses, and really cramped the amount of time we had to clean before moving. On top of everything the movers did not use rugs to protect our hardwood floors, dinged and scratched door frames and walls, left packing tape stuck to floors, as well as all the leaves they tracked throughout the entire house. After our horrendous moving experience Colonial Van Lines has been less than willing to work with us. They are still hard to contact, the person we are trying to work with usually has a full voicemail so we can't even leave a message, and doesn't return calls in a timely manner.

We have been trying to work towards a resolution with Colonial, but 2 months later, they are offering us $100 and each time we try to address specific issues we had, we are told they will look into it and get back to us. It's already been 2 months, not sure how long it takes to review calls, and contact the company they outsourced to. Save yourself the headache and additional stress. They don't care what they promised in their contract, and their customer service is amazingly worse than you can imagine.

    Original Review: Jan. 21, 2016

I choose Colonial Van Lines because of James, the person that I talked to, more than anything they offered because the prices weren’t as cheap as the others but there were things that went wrong that would never make me recommend them. First, when the movers got there, they told me that I had to pay them more money because certain things weren't in the contract. They said that I had to be within a hundred feet from where they parked so I ended up giving them an additional $20 because I live a block away and I wanted them to do the move.

Second, they told me we didn't have to go with them to have my stuff weighed since they were going too far and they would text back a picture of the weight of my stuff but they didn't do that. So I texted with the moving guy all day until he stopped communicating with me at one point. I kept asking Colonial but they didn't know and said to give it 48 or 72 hours but they never did. Then I found out that Colonial Van put my things in storage and broke up some of my stuff. They were well over a month behind in the move and I never really found out what the actual weight was. I'm just glad that the move is over.

My husband and I recently moved from Detroit, Michigan to Ogden, Utah. We knew moving across the country would not be cheap, so we were excited when Colonial Van Lines gave us a significantly lower estimate than any other moving company. Unfortunately, their estimate was extremely off, and we were 800 lbs over. (which made them $300-$500 more expensive than other moving companies). They also took over 3 weeks to get our stuff out here (part of that was during the holiday, but then Christmas was over and they were still nowhere close). All the people we talked to/interacted with were very kind and apologetic about the delay. We were told we would be compensated for it... and then they charged us extra because our apartment wasn't close to the parking lot. So that cancelled out our compensation for the delay. Not the best experience, but all of our stuff was accounted for, so that's good.

I left a lot of stuff because it was a short notice. And then delivery, we were late, we didn't get here until a day. The mover didn't do the delivery. He thought my fiance could get here in so many days but we drove 1,900 miles and we can't get here at the allotted time. We needed an extra day, so we held up. Overall, they were pretty good. I had some minor damage but I didn't realize that they stuffed two houses in one van.

She dealt with the moving coordinator and the account manager and paid them. On the other hand, I stayed in California for everything to get scheduled. I waited for the movers at the storage, opened it up, let them in and then out. It was very late at night when they loaded everything. They did a good job and I gave them some money to go have dinner before they got en route to Oklahoma. I followed and got there a few days later after the delivery. Everything seemed to go okay except for a couple of things that got damaged like the board across the couch that was cracked. But that's part of moving. Another concern was that Colonial Van subbed it out to a different person.

I went to moving.com so we got lots of estimates, and Colonial was within the middle. Their initial agent was very friendly and helpful. The account manager was also very helpful but what he said did not come about. There were lots of talk about being a part load of a 50-footer or a 75-footer and it would take anywhere from two to ten days. In the end, it was a small, independent contractor with a small van out of Phoenix. They followed us, we followed them, and we all came down together. Everybody tried to do their best but things changed all the time. It was very confusing. Colonial Van Lines did what they could do but because it's such a national company, it’s difficult for them to do the jigsaw to help everybody all at the same time. And I think we’ve lost one box. We will be putting in a report about it.

I got Colonial Van Lines about three years ago when when we were trying to move our father-in-law over. We planned two months in advance to get them over here. We thought, “this looks really good, everything should work out well.” So I tried to speed up the process, and although things got odd towards the end, everything worked out. I offered a $1,000 bonus to the mover to get here a day early but he got here exactly an hour late which was hard on us.

And then my biggest concern was when that mover went to Boise. We thought we had paid for everything upfront. My wife was in Boise and he got there at 9 o’clock in the evening and tried to bribe her. She was basically blackmailed to go to the bank to get him $400 that he had to have before he would even load his truck. And we were somehow informed that we were to pay half up and then pay the other half when he arrives at Medford, but he insisted that he had to have the $400 in cash then, and my wife panicked. I explained to her that the mover knows exactly what she can get out of the ATM machine because she didn’t have that much cash.

We got the cash, he got his money, and he delivered. He didn’t get his $1,000 bonus which I said I would give if he arrived at a particular time. Frankly, I don’t work enough with moving companies to know what to expect, how busy they are, or how to profile a driver and the people who are doing the job. But this guy was a wrestler--awfully strong yet courteous man. In the end, everything worked out fine. He had the mattress strapped to the outside of the vehicle which was okay. He also had it wrapped considering the weather conditions that time. Nothing was damaged.

So my experience with Colonial Van Lines wasn’t beautiful and pleasurable, and I wish I could do it again. It’s the money that I was most concerned about because I needed to have that taken care of and I wanted to go with my wife—I could’ve. And they were supposed to be here a day early since I was going to fly back and help my wife get her brother out of the hospital. But everything worked out fine, and the good thing with Colonial is their communications as they explained what was going to occur. It could’ve been a lot worse but it didn’t end up a disaster. My father-in-law got here. I got food in front of him. He got all the stuff upstairs and my wife and I got his bed made and his room partially put together and we finished this the next day.

So I talked with a couple of people and with other van lines but of the few people that I talked with, Colonial Van Lines said they could give me a better deal. Their moving coordinator and account manager were good. The only close to being negative that happened was after the movers came, picked everything up, I was told that I would be called back that evening with a tail weight to the truck so I would know how much more I had to pay.

That was on a Friday and I received the call Saturday telling me that the truck would be here Monday, but no one called or told me about the tail weight. And when the truck came, that's when I found out how much more money I would need, and found out it was a lot more than what I anticipated. I had to run and get the money, come back and pay them, because they had already started loading the truck. About 2-3 hours after they left, I got a phone call to give me the tail weight. Other than that, everything was pretty smooth.

Colonial Van Lines did a good job with the moving and following up with everything, making sure that people were there on time with the pickup. The people who picked everything up were fantastic. Every correspondence that I had with Colonial, insurance and everything else were good too. Colonial themselves is great, but I didn't have the best experience with the third party for delivery. The first issue was they called me at 9:00 at night on a Sunday telling me that they were going to deliver the stuff within an hour. 10:00 at night for a delivery isn't really ideal.

Second of all, when we rescheduled for the next morning for them to deliver everything, they showed up an hour and a half late and they just reeked of pot. That was really frustrating because I'm sitting there waiting for an hour and a half for them at a storage unit, not even at my own house. They did unpack everything. But when they put everything in the storage unit, they just threw everything in there and it wasn't very organized.

When I finally got in to organize everything and check my stuff to make sure there was no damage, there are about five boxes that don't even belong to me and they're clearly marked with somebody else. So I'm sure that other people weren't ecstatic about it either because they didn't have their stuff. When I did look at the reviews on the third party, it was all poor. So I think Colonial could've done a little bit more research on who they chose.

The very first one was with the sales rep who initially put the plan together and that went okay. I had requested for a timeframe of Monday or Tuesday, Dec 28 or 29, because the buyers needed to be in the house at a certain time. I was guaranteed that that would happen, but it didn’t. I explained that on the 29th, I needed to be out by 3:30. The rep kept saying that they're going to help me but they never did other than I need to be rescheduled for the 30th and 31st. That was very stressful because I had to get out of the house and I wasn’t able to.

My experience with the account manager was okay but I'm missing some stuff. They traveled a thousand miles and banged up my door and a few pieces of furniture. But other than that, they were very fast and did a good job.

BEWARE!! Total NIGHTMARE! Colonial Van Lines contracts out to third-party carriers and as a customer, you have no control of the quality of that company or drivers. I was contracted with "Top Cat Movers", a totally unprofessional and unreliable company. After numerous complaints to Colonial Van Lines, they backed up their vendor vs, the paying customer. I asked repeatedly for another carrier but they could not make a change! Top Cat was delayed from the beginning, scheduled pick up on Oct 9th. Did not pick up until the Oct 12th. The truck was 3/4 full and could not accommodate my 8100 pounds of inventory. They said they would schedule another truck and split the load.

Colonial Van Lines promised me that all my property would be on one dedicated truck and not co-mingled with other property. The driver (owner) was patronizing, rude, sarcastic and totally unprofessional. I received my first load on Oct 18th which was damaged, wet, and moldy. The driver did not have support to unload and place my items in the house, so he shoved everything in the garage. I found out the driver left my property overnight in my backyard with the sprinklers on! I expected the 2nd load on Oct 30th but after FIVE no shows the 2nd load arrived on Nov 25th. The load was incomplete and damaged.

All the disassembled items on pickup such as the bed frames, table, and grandfathers clock components were incomplete (no bolts, rails and missing weights and pendulum for the clock) and, therefore, could not be assembled. I believe the company has stolen items including a Dyson vacuum, jewelry boxes, clothes, TV, heavy duty dolly, clock components, dresser large mirror, two end tables, dining room chair, card table and chairs, etc. There must be over $10,000 worth of damage, lost and stolen items. 80% of my property has been compromised. I was working with the Colonial Van Lines escalation department but to no avail.

The driver continued to lie and make excuses as to why the load was late and damaged. I still do not have my complete list of inventory and in fact, I have other people's property in my garage. I paid over $3500 for this move of 1000 miles and it was a true nightmare. The treatment was unprofessional and no resolution has been made to compensate me for the late penalties, damaged goods, missing items, and my costs to hire outside help to move the items from garage to house. The driver was threatening and I had to hire security to ensure the driver did not attack.

On top of the $3500 for the cost of the move, I had to pay over $1500 for outside support. CVL sent me a final agreement in which they would compensate me for $331 that the driver failed to pay in penalties if I would sign a liability waiver that I would seek no further action and retract my complaints and negative feedback. I refused to sign as I will seek legal action for this disastrous move. DO NOT CONTRACT with Colonial Van Lines. They will not support you (even though they are responsible) for the conduct of their third party carriers. JOB # **

Colonial Van Lines had a fair estimate of what it's going to cost me to move compared to other people I checked. I wanted to move to a location where there is a cheaper cost of living. I had a pleasant interaction with the moving coordinator. They did a good job of explaining the process and all the contingencies that were related to that. However, there were a couple of situations that happened. I had to call them several times to have them correct the destination address. And even on the night before they were going to deliver they still haven't been communicated the new address. Have I not double checked, it would have created a big problem because the delivery would have gone to a different town altogether in spite of the fact that I had made three attempts to get them to correct the address.

On the other hand, I didn't do a good enough job double checking to see if what I had have matched with what they had listed on their inventory of what they had in stored. And when I got the pack, I discovered there was a box that was unaccounted for and a chair that didn't get listed on the original shipping list. That would mean, a chair in the box that didn't get delivered. I can't blame it all on them as it was partly my responsibility. However, they could have been a little more thorough on their inventory. But overall, I'm satisfied with Colonial as not all of what happened was their fault.

The moving coordinators from R&R Moving Company (the company that Colonial Van Lines subcontracted) were good and knowledgeable. Their movers were very nice and polite. Everything was clean, including their truck. Everything was good. I checked them and they were good people. They did their job. I went with Colonial Van Lines because of their representation for a moving company which I thought I was getting, but they contracted it out. They have good contractors and I had a pleasant move, but they should have said at the beginning that they will contract it out. I would've understood more, and I would've been more reasonable.

R&R Moving was a good company, but I had to step in with the paperwork (which I don't like having to do with) because they already knew that I wasn't paying for it. All they were told to do is move me. They came looking professional with a collar and shirt, or a t-shirt with the name but I call those tank tops wife beaters - that's the only thing that looked unprofessional. Also, the lady who tried to collect the money was rude to my people so my staff hung up on her. They will never use Colonial Van Lines again because of that. Professionally, it's always good looking at the other end, too, and my people will use them again. I should've known better because I also did moving and storage all these years, too.

Before we made the move in Texas, Colonial Van Lines was one of the probably three that I did some homework on. He was gone when I contacted again and so I had to talk to the second coordinator who was very good, professional and gave me more true correct information based on what was going to happen. I had a good experience with the account manager who assisted me during the actual move. He was a little more professional, upfront and honest.

I had a lot of issues with the moving company that was sublet by Colonial. The moving company gave me a time range from 13th - 20th of September and the furniture wasn't delivered until the 25th of September. I was promised a lot, talked to the owner a number of times and was told that it was going to be here by the 20th which were flat out lies. But Colonial did a good job, and went far and beyond. Mike, who is the Colonial go-to-guy, handled all the heat and the bad stuff. He was really talented and very professional. He got involved, took care of the business and got me restitution from the other folks.

The person turned out to be some kind of a gangster who threatened not to pick up my stuff or throwing them in the middle of the road if I asked him a lot of questions about the process. The Colonial Van Lines team was not responding to my call and they were missing in action after they got my deposit.

The person who sold me at first and enrolled me with Colonial pretty much lied to me about the estimated cost for the weight. I gave him a specific weight and details about my belongings. He estimated my belongings to be about 3,000 pounds and he gave me a lower quote. But when they came to pick up my stuff, they told me that my stuff was actually about 1,500 pounds more and I have to pay about $1,200 more than I was quoted in the first place. So everything they told me was a lie. Also, they were supposed to pick up my stuff on Sunday, October 4th, between 2 and 5. The gangster that came to pick up my stuff showed up at 9 p.m. and they didn't finish picking up my stuff until 2 in the morning which caused me to miss my flight the following day down to Tennessee. Overall, my experience with them was terrible.

    Hadi,

I personally researched your account and saw numerous calls from management here to make sure your relocation went smoothly. I do see the movers asked to revise the price due to the extra furniture pieces you did not mention in your conversation with our estimators, and for the extra stairs not mentioned; but management intervened and prevented the additional charges from happening. To say we as a company did not intervene on your behalf in not a correct statement.

She was very helpful, sweet, and made me laugh. The three guys that came to move us were exceptional. I couldn't have asked for a better three guys to help move. They were the nicest guys, very polite, sweet and helpful. I was doing this move on my own because my husband had already moved so I was a little nervous about having people at my house moving me out with just by myself. They were funny, too. They were Serbian and they were hysterical. They started talking in Serbian and I'm like, "Look guys, I'm gonna put a translator on my phone" and they'd laugh.

When the guys that actually did the work got to the house, they had been given the wrong information. So the moving coordinator had to go all the way back through and there were a lot of problems back and forth. But the guy that came and did the move definitely got it all done. Colonial Van Lines has competitive prices over other moving companies. We contacted them and they explained what was going on and things went pretty much as explained. I wasn’t familiar with moving brokers, which is what Colonial is, so I was a little different. But Conquest Moving, the company that they contacted to move us, were extremely helpful. They were flexible and everything went smoothly. Everything was moved. I think one small item was damaged but I felt that was really good given they are coming halfway cross country and everything that had to be moved. The only issue I had was that the estimated cost was significantly less than what it turned out to be, I thinking that they may have underestimated the weight. They better do at estimating the weight because I was quoted a couple of thousand dollars more. But even so, it still ended up to be competitive in terms of cost. I’d recommend them to a friend.

Colonial Van Lines is fantastic. The estimate and quote were all done over the phone with the moving coordinator, and the final cost even came a little less than the quote. Also the driver and the helper were very professional, clean-cut and cordial. We couldn't ask for anything nicer. Everything was perfect. We never found one broken dish and they put everything where it should be. They set up everything and even helped hook up the TV.

In comparison, I initially went for a cheaper one and I got what I paid for and that was nothing; this other company were supposed to pick our stuff and they cancelled on us at the last minute for unknown reason (all they told us was their truck broke down and they would not return our calls; it was a very poor experience). I've also had a moving experience many years ago when I was in the service and it wasn't the best because they stole from me.

But Colonial is different. They went above and beyond to satisfy us. They went out of their way to get us moved to Wisconsin because it was costing us extra money rent-wise and utility-wise to stay in Illinois. They said they would be here and they were here. They said they would run a little late but it was nothing that screwed our schedule up. We couldn't have been any happier. They helped us get out of a bind. So I would recommend Colonial to anyone because they sure did a fantastic job. It was a very good moving experience.

When I had to make a move for my husband's job, I searched for a local moving lines online and Colonial Van came up. So I called them and spoke with a gentleman. I liked the way he was on the phone, and everything logistically made a lot of sense in terms of being available, flexible for the needs that we have and within our budget. However, the two gentlemen they sent out took way too long to do what they needed to do in the house - though I had everything boxed up. They had the furniture and a lot of boxes, but they were in my house for a long time the whole day.

Also, they put a ding on the hardwood floor in my foyer. I saw that they did it but I didn't say anything to them. I was a little upset about it and I was hoping that they would say anything about it during that time but they didn't. I felt uncomfortable so I didn't bring it up while they were in my house. But other than that, everything went perfectly. Colonial Van solved a lot of problems that I had very quickly and within the budget. In fact, I was under a tremendous amount of stress and we did wait until the last minute to get them to arrange and apparently, they accomplished everything that I truly needed to accomplish. So overall, I had a very positive experience with Colonial Van.

We decided to move closer to where our grandson lives now that we're retired, so we called two or three moving companies and they gave us their best quote to begin with. Eventually, we chose Colonial Van Lines. The price didn't stay as quoted over the phone however since we had more stuff than we thought we have when we talked to them.

Colonial Van Lines has nice people but they did run behind-schedule. On the first night, the driver was about five hours late since his engine quit. It was around 9:30 at night before he got there to do the inventory. Then the same thing happened the day of delivery - he had a flat tire - so we waited. I also wasn't made aware that I have to give him cash at delivery, without which he wouldn't start unloading the truck. It took me about an hour to get cash so the driver had to sit and wait. If I had known about the need to give him cash, I would have gotten it during the time we were waiting for him to arrive so that part was a little bit bad. Nevertheless, I'd probably recommend them still.

I relocated to North Carolina from Maryland to be with my daughter and found Colonial Van Lines through the Internet. I called several moving companies but the girl I spoke to from Colonial Van Lines was so organized and knew everything. She instilled confidence in me. There were some others that I almost went with but I didn't get that same feeling and there was even an obnoxious attitude by one. But not when I called Colonial. They seemed pretty good. Everybody that I talked to was very useful.

There was only one time that I got nervous. There was a guy who left a message, a voicemail, and said that he'd be in contact with me in a couple of days and then I didn't hear from him. I emailed him and it must have just been the timing -- that maybe it was late at night. But when you're moving, weird things go in your head and I got nervous. But he called the next day and everything was fine. He made me a little nervous but it worked out fine.

The good thing is that the girl from Colonial called and she told me my final estimate. I asked for her to email me the information since I did not have a pen and she said she would. I never got an email. I called when I got down here, and she gave me my balance but it would have been nice to have an email of my final balance so I would know. I asked when they would be coming and the girl asked if I wanted her to contact the driver. I said no, not thinking they were coming that day. It worked out okay but it was partly my fault by not letting her contact the driver. So all in all, Colonial Van Lines is REALLY good.

They had two guys, and one was very young guy that was tattooed up, smelling with foul odor and it took them a full 8 hours all day just to wrap my furniture. Then they had to come back and the truck they brought was too small, and had to leave everything again pushing my move out 3 additional days late. Then they came back with a bigger truck but it took all day again to load my furniture. And they just threw the items on the truck breaking mirrors, scratching up valuable furniture and broke my son's crib in half by putting boxes on top. This was the worse move experience by far and I would not recommend this company to anyone. It took four months to get a claim processed and it was a huge hassle and nightmare.

    Original Review: Sept. 13, 2015

The movers did a great job. The problem was the truck was not big enough to hold all my belongings. The movers said the hospital bed and my riding lawn mower was not on the list. When I talk to Ben I told him I had two riding lawn mowers and I know I told him about my hospital bed. I specifically mention that because how heavy it was. Because they couldn't pick up everything I had to leave a lot of stuff in the house and make further arrangements with the buyers of my house to give me another day to get my things out. I had to rent another U-Haul pick up the rest of my stuff and put in storage until I can arrange for it to be delivered to my house.

This was, by far, one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. It started with the movers showing up a day later than promised. They called and said they would be there first thing in the morning and did not show until 2 pm. They backed the truck into the lawn (which was wet) and got the truck stuck in the mud, leaving big tire marks. The driver and helper were fighting. Yelling at each other using profanity. They broke a floor to ceiling mirror in the process.

The day they were to deliver my stuff, I was told they would be there by 2 pm. I left my new job early to be there. The same two guys showed up at 8 pm saying they got lost. They blocked the street with the truck and refused to move it. The police were called and I had to talk to them. The driver did not want to move the truck but finally did. It was after midnight when they finished. Mind you, I moved into an apartment building. I am sure my neighbors loved the notice that late at night! Do NOT use this company! Worst experience ever!

My antique dresser and card table both had legs broken off when I went to storage. I sent pictures and a letter to the claims department with no answer. I sent another letter and got an email stating the company never received a claim. I resent the pictures to Colonial and received no correspondence since.

I moved less than half of the inventory that was on the furniture list yet the move and weight was more than double of the original cost. Movers repacked items already packed by myself or previous movers. Mover did not show up on time for pick up and was over a week late on delivery. For delivery he said his truck broken down but it ended up that he was on another job! Also for delivery he gave a call an HOUR "heads up" before delivery!

Mover failed to deliver my vacuum to me, but delivered it to my daughter at the stop off. Also my daughter did not receive all items upon the delivery of her furniture. I would never recommend these movers to ANYONE! I would call the "so-called" customer service representative yet there was never ANY resolution. Upon the delivery it was expected that we run around and get 11 $1000 cashier's checks from the postal office. We requested at the pick up location for us to use a credit card or a transfer of money but no one ever called us from Colonial as we were promised. This was most definitely the worst move ever!

Updated 12/22/2015 - I was contacted by Colonial Movers to help resolve all the issues we had with our move. I was told that they were under new management and were willing to "right their wrongs". Again, they charged me roughly 60% more than the original estimate... and yet we moved 3 rooms less of the original furniture quote. They wanted to compensate me for only 10% of our original deposit only if I removed negative reviews about their company. This seems comical considering that the movers were late to pack our furniture, a week late on delivery, lost many items, damaged many items, and numerous other problems. Very unprofessional... DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Pre-move contracting and pricing was professional, courteous, and efficient. Loading was a day and a half late and contracted out to individuals who had a rent-a-truck (Rider). The individuals came with the truck already 3/4 full. There was not enough room to load the contracted number of boxes and furniture of the one bedroom apartment with no appliances. The individuals came without material to protect the mattress or wooden furniture. They had to make two trips and never unloaded the front 3/4 of the truck. They pushed wooden furniture against the floor and walls of the truck, stacked boxes and other items onto unprotected wooden and cloth furniture and unprotected mattress.

The load was to be delivered by the 10th of the next month. Three dates have been given and each time the load has not arrived. There was a dispute about price between the contracted load/unload mover MacRelo and Colonial. Colonial did not appear to know when the load was being delivered each time I call them. They do not proactively call to say they will be late or not arrive. And it is still not set when they will deliver even though the 10th is their stated latest unloading date. Who knows in what shape the load will be. Stay tuned.

I was very pleased with the initial service and quote I received, but when the crew came to pick up my items (which I had detailed during the quote), they said there were extra costs for some of the items. The representative should have explained that at the time of the quote. When I tried to contact the rep at the time of pick up to get an explanation for the extra costs, neither of the two reps were available and neither called me back when I left a message. That's horrible customer service.

After a positive interaction with Colonial Van Lines, Mohammed increased their star rating on Sept. 19, 2015.

    Updated review: Sept. 19, 2015

After Consumer Affairs reached out to me, the company emailed paperwork and requested an updated star rating, and to explain my resolution. I will receive minimal compensation after this...supposedly.

    Original Review: Sept. 9, 2015

Hands down the worst move of my life, the price was insane for a small amount of stuff. They lost 75% of the parts for my kids bunk beds, which can't be replaced. The guys took almost 8 hours to unload in the winter with all doors open in our house. The whole experience was a nightmare. I would never ever ever use this company again.
