I had some problems with my previous home insurance and thought I'd need someone who's good because I don’t like to spend my money like I have the privilege to give it away. I applied for service at my home because that’s what I’m paying for. I ended up having the people that previously came around come back out to my home to do the job but I wasn’t happy and satisfied. On the other hand, the gentleman sent by TotalProtect did an absolutely wonderful and professional job. It was really awesome and I was beyond satisfied.

I signed up with TotalProtect end of 2014. I had a protection plan before way back and I was very not satisfied with it and I dropped it. But when I saw a flier from TotalProtect, and I realized that a lot of my appliances are getting older, I thought, “Let me check it out, looks pretty cool.” The first thing I noticed was the woman who I dealt with was nice, very friendly and that made me feel good. So she did a good job at selling it. So I signed up and had it the full of 2015 and then finally I used it. I had never used it before and that was maybe a month ago. My garbage disposal went so I called them up and they immediately, while I was on the phone, got me in touch with a vendor, whoever locally that would handle it, and they told me that if they couldn't fix it, they would replace it. So the gentleman came and was nice. I called him up and he was able to come within a day.

The work quality was good because the gentleman really looked at it and I was impressed because he asked me to give him the model number because it's old - it's about ten years old. So I had to work hard to find it because it was dark underneath my sink. Then he said, “I'm going to bring one just in case.” I told him, "Well, that's brilliant." In case he has to replace it, he'll have one there instead of saying, “I can't fix it so I got to come back in a week.” So that was amazing because it was all done in one quick trip. He was able to fix it. It was quick and easy, and the work was guaranteed. I'm happy with TotalProtect so I highly recommend them. They're responsive and they mean what they say.

One was over the phone and the other one through online. Submitting a claim was pretty simple and I didn't have any issues. Technicians were very knowledgeable and were able to fix most of the problems.

I've used TotalProtect before and the claims process went smoothly. The technician who came was very thorough, explained the heating board problem and ended up replacing the unit. Although I was really concerned that he had to come out twice. The second time he came out, he observed that there was an additional problem that needed to be addressed and replaced that as well. He should have figured that out the first time considering he had inspected the entire assembly. I don't see how he missed that, but overall he was very knowledgeable.

I called the company that originally put the garage door opener and the door on the garage and I had completely forgotten that we had HMS Home warranty because the paperwork was tucked in one of its bars. The girl that I talked to on the phone was not very nice and pretty much chewed me out because I was supposed to call HMS and go through them. She told me that I would pay extra hundred dollars for it, left three voicemails which was really pounding in the fact that I had done it wrong. Then the last person that I talked to said, "We're not gonna make you pay that extra hundred dollars." She had great customer service and made sure that my problem was taken care of. Getting the repair done, getting everything taken care of was fantastic. But I still haven't received my reimbursement yet.

Somebody from Pentagon Federal Credit Union called and asked me if I wanted TotalProtect. I have a house and I didn’t want to be saddled with big, expensive repair bills. When submitting a claim for the sink, I called TotalProtect's phone number and told them about my issue. They gave me a claim number and a plumbing store to call. After I called the store, I talked to a young lady who said she’ll have somebody come over my house and look at the problem. The next morning, a guy was at my house and said he had to give me a new faucet and it would take about five days for it to come in. He told me this on a Saturday morning and the faucet came along with him on a Friday, six days later, and he installed it with no problem. He was real nice and the work was excellent.

I'm a real estate agent and deal with warranty companies all the time and was impressed with TotalProtect. Initially, when I submitted the claim, I was a little concerned because when they gave me the name of the first guy, I called him in the morning and never heard back. Called him back a little bit later and he goes, "Well, I'm busy. I can't get to you today. I'm working on my boat." So I called TotalProtect back again and they gave me a second name but I wouldn't use that particular company to work on my dog's doghouse as that company was called out on one of my client's properties and they were absolutely horrible to deal with. So I said, "No. I really do not want that company."

They gave us a third company, A&E Heating and Air, which I called and left a message. Shortly thereafter, A&E called us back and the same day, they were at our house. That was on a Saturday, and Monday it was fixed. They were absolutely delightful to work with. They were very quick, clean, and prompt which I don't see often with a lot of companies out there.

I got the wrong number the first time so I called back and the second person that I got was very friendly and I could get a hold of someone at any other department or whatever I needed. It was a pretty smooth process from there. My heater had gone out and they responded promptly with my schedule because I had work and they wouldn't come out early so it worked.

The technician they sent was friendly. It was a cold day when he came in and he was nice because he put plastic on his feet so he wouldn't get any water in the house. He was here for a good two hours, and didn't have the part so he left for 15-20 minutes then came back in and fixed it. He waited a couple of minutes to make sure it was fixed properly and once he knew what was there, he was very nice about it and explained what caused it and left. Ever since then the heater's been fine. Overall, it was a great experience and I was satisfied. I would definitely reach out to them and ask them if I ever need to.

We had an incident with our HVAC system. They sent out a couple of jacklegs who were unqualified. They maybe were on the job for one day or so, but they knew absolutely nothing. And they were ready to do some major work that did not need to be done. So we requested another guy to come out here and fixed the problem. Now we got them trained so that they allow us to use him every time. The other experience we've had was with the garage door and they sent out somebody pretty good on that. So, overall, we're well-satisfied and we would recommend them... but with some qualifications.

I was surprised the following morning. Before 8 someone was calling me to come by to see the heating system. The technician was very kind and explained to me what was wrong with the unit in a good amount of time. It was really nice to know that someone will be answering my call as soon as possible. The one who did the work was great and we were ecstatic with them. Too bad they weren't on the top of the list. But overall, our experience with HMS worked out very well.

I'm satisfied with TotalProtect. I had the garage door repaired and it was handled well as expected. The first time I tried I had a washing machine that needed repair, and that went smooth as well. The second time was a little bumpy with the people that they sent out, but eventually it all worked out. I’ve only had one incident when the sink needed repair. They sent someone out and they were in a hurry, they didn’t have the right tools, and weren’t prepared. They got called on another job and they left quickly and wanted me to pay. We told them we wouldn't pay because we didn't feel it was worth it. But that was resolved and we're fine with that now. Everything has been well handled with TotalProtect so far and we’re happy with it.

At first, I got a little worried because the company didn't answer when I called in for a claim, I didn't know that they had a certain time to respond to me. Eventually, I was able to reach out to them, then they explained the process. Their technicians were professional and courteous. They explained to me the issue and taught me how to fix it if it happens again or if I have to do it myself. Everything was great.

The past few weeks we had our air condition replaced. They made us feel like all we're going to do is pay our deductible. But we got all this out-of-pocket expense. I know we're not getting our air condition replaced at no charge. Also, it's not going to be just $75 deductible. By the time I had replaced everything, I was almost $3,000 out of pocket. So, they need to be a little more upfront about the expenses and not in small print. If they're going give us plans then we need to know that there's going to be X amount of charges that we're not gonna pay for.

I've had several things done and everything has been great. I have no complaints as far as calling them and getting them out there. Also, they allow me to use the same company over and over again, like when I had our air conditioner repaired several times, which I like. But, I had a garbage disposal replaced and I was not happy with that one. I didn't like the guy that came out. I felt very uncomfortable with him. His workmanship wasn't all that great. But other than that, no complaints at all. I would recommend them.

I got the warranty when I bought my house. It was offered as part of the deal where I got a one-year homeowners' warranty for free and I have kept renewing it over the years because it's paid off. So far, when submitting a claim, everything has been handled quickly and efficiently. It's obvious that the claims reps are people who English isn't their first language or are heavily accented sometimes and they’re a little hard to understand.

So far it's been worth my while to keep paying and renewing every year. This is the first time I've ever had to deal with an appliance being bad. The guy that came to service my refrigerator has been here twice. The first time, he charged it with Freon and it worked great for about three weeks. Now it's not working anymore and I'm still waiting to hear from HMS about what they're going to do. A couple of years ago, my water heater went out, and within four or five hours, they had come in and replaced it. Overall, it has been a positive and hassle-free experience.

Excellent company! We have an excellent history with TotalProtect Home Warranty, but we have no discretion as to who they would have come to our home to service us. It would be nice if you find someone that does excellent work come into your home and have respect for it like putting booties on their feet before they enter into your home and know exactly what they’re doing as far as the service is concerned on whatever it is that they’re working on. You would like to call them back if you have an issue with something similar or with another appliance or what have you. We don’t have that option with TotalProtect. It would be great to be able to have that input.

I really enjoy having the privilege of working with them in many different capacities as far as with my appliances are concerned. It’s been a variety of different items that we had them serviced - water and heating, and air conditioning. The quality of the work that has been performed had been great with an exception of one company that came to the house. I’ll never forget because they went downstairs and were working on my washing machine and my microwave. They did a haphazard job on the washing machine, and it could’ve caused fire. My washing machine is on the lower level of my home and had we not just happen to go down a couple of days later, it could have been a detrimental type of situation. There were sparks. Other than that, every single service person that they have sent has been superb.

I had a home warranty policy for 5 yrs with this company. Always paid my premiums faithfully. Just had a couple of minor claims over the period. Then my heating unit stopped working and I placed a claim. The tech came out after 4 days. Stayed for 5 min and did something that did not fix it. Blamed the issue on lack of maintenance. I called the home warranty but they declined to do anything based on the tech's opinion. I then contacted another company and their tech came out the next day. He diagnosed it the heat exchanger as having worn out due to age. I called the warranty company again to dispute the denial and sent in the new service report. Two weeks went by with no contact. Finally on calling again, they said the claim was denied and the second opinion did not matter. The repairs cost me over $1400 which they refused to cover.

I am just shocked. My first major claim in 5 years and they refuse to cover it based on their tech's opinion who spent 5 min at the site. Add to that, there was no follow up from them at all.

What good is a warranty company if they tell you all these things are covered BEFORE you sign with them and then when they need repair/replacement, can't get authorization. There is no one in the Northern Arizona area who is ever available to repair anything for days. Took ONE month - FOUR WEEKS to get our garage door opener fixed. Ice maker had to be "repaired" twice and was very uncomfortable with who they sent out to do the repair. Also an unprofessional laborer was sent to repair the shower valve. My hot water heater went out around noon on New Year's Eve. I called HMS to file a claim and was told a service provider would be out the same day. HMS was unable to honor that agreement because their in-network providers were unavailable. It took them 3 hours to figure out that they did not have anyone available to service my home. In the meantime the water heater which is located on the second level of my home caused over $10K worth of damage to the floors, walls, ceiling etc on the two levels. HMS authorized me to find my own plumber but warned that I needed to have the plumber call for an authorization number prior to performing any work. I found a plumber willing to come out that day but was advised that there would be overtime rates. I called HMS back to confirm that it was ok to have them come out with the higher rates and I was advised that it was fine.

When the plumber came out and diagnosed the problem he called in for an authorization number, but was told that his rates would not be covered. I was bounced around throughout the authorization department trying to get approval for the plumber who was already physically at my home and able to complete the work. HMS did not authorize the full amount of the plumber's rates and I ended up paying out of pocket in hopes that HMS will reimburse me. Had I chose to wait for HMS to send their in-network plumber out I would have been without hot water for at least a week. That is unacceptable coverage.

I paid the $75 service charge and was told that total protect would only cover the cost of replacing my water heather but the other issues including bringing things back up to code was not covered and it would cost me an extra $470 dollars. I didnt like it but I was stuck so I agreed, that was on December 21st and was told that I should receive a call from them within 2 days to come back in and fix things. It is now 1/05 and I still have not had my water heater fixed. I called total protect on 12/30 after not being able to figure out what the issue was thru the repair company and the customer service rep, assured me that he contacted the repair company and due to the holidays the shipment of the water heater was delayed but the water heater was ordered and was on the truck being delivered. Frustrated with that answer, I figured it was nothing that I could do and would have to wait. On Saturday 1/2 I called the repair company again and got their answering service and was told that I would receive a call on Monday for follow up but never got a call. Called the repair company back this morning and was told that they still have not received the water heater from the warranty company. I became very frustrated at that point because the previous customer service rep with the warranty company led me to believe that the water heater was coming from the repair company. I called the warranty company back and was told that the water heater was never ordered because I didnt call in and agree to the excess charges. When I spoke to the representative on 12/30 I was never told this and the rep acted as if the repair company had already ordered it. So now I have to wait an additional 2 days for them to actually order it. I am not happy about this at all, I have been dealing with this for 3 weeks and any other company would have resolved this issue in 3 days or less.

Updated 1/12/2016 - I wrote my first complaint on 1/05, a day after I wrote the review, the warranty company contacted me and said they would take care of SOME of the access charges which made me feel some what better especially knowing that they promised that I would hear something back around Thursday of last week which was January 7th. Here it is January 12th and I still have not heard back after being promised that the water heather was being expedited to the repair company and it would take 2 to 3 days. I am so livid at this point, I have also called the warranty company back and left a message on their voicemail and still have yet to receive a call. Can anyone advise me on another route to go or who I can take this up further with, you can email me at **. This is the worst warranty company ever this has almost been a month that I have been dealing with this issue.

The quality of the work that was performed was good. Since the tech repaired it, everything was okay with the ice maker. It was only plugged up and the guy showed me how to unplug it in the future. We had to pull out and take some lines and stuff off of it, but it was only half frozen ice and the lines. I was happy with him. The only thing is, I didn't get the receipt when I paid him. He said his hand-held printer that he carries with him was down so he couldn't give a receipt. But I paid to Sears and he might have taken care of it. I only wanted to make sure my payment was going to go through so I wouldn't have to pay again. Other than that, it wasn't frustrating. I appreciate the coverage and I'm glad I've got it because you never know what could happen.

I'm satisfied with the service that HMS Home Warranty provides. I haven't had any real problems when submitting a claim and for the most part, it was easy and they were courteous. I had an emergency with the thermostat, and I have a 90-year-old mother that lives with me and we didn't have heat. I called that Friday and they told me they couldn't get anyone here until Monday or Tuesday and I said that was not acceptable. I spoke with someone and they finally got out someone out that Saturday and it turned out fine.

But I've had one bad experience in my 15 years with them, which may not be a big thing to HMS but it was to me because I don't know what my status is. Someone called me for a renewal during the early part of November and I'm supposed to renew my contract and get the bill. I never got one until last week and I had made about five calls looking for my bill and new contract. I finally spoke to someone last week and had to do a payment over the phone for two months. That in itself was very upsetting. I was ready to cancel but they called me to renew, and I said, "Yes, I was renewing."

I never got anything or heard from them about the bill. They kept saying, "Oh, we'll email you", but I never got an email, until last week, and I told them I was canceling. If I couldn't get something concrete and know that I was renewed, I don't need it. They should be truthful about renewing. It was them who called me and asked me to. I'm dissatisfied with this particular incident because I don't feel I had to follow them up. If I'm renewing, I should get my bills out in a timely manner and not continuously call to request a bill. If next year is going to be the same, I'm not going to renew.

I had no air conditioner for two months and it was such a nightmare. They sent me a technician that was absolutely for the birds. He knew nothing more with what he was doing than the man in the moon. First, it was established we got a Freon leak which when that happens, it freezes up so I have to defrost it. And so, he came out once a week and put Freon in there. It was just a joke. I called six weeks after the deal and complained which I should have done earlier. They called somebody else and the guy fixed it in no time. We got HMS Home Warranty when we purchased our house on the recommendation of our realtor. We got our initial policy and we have had some claims but the only one that was a little bit problematic was when our air conditioning went out. The firm that they're using wasn’t open on weekends and was very slow to get to us. But that was last year and the firms that they’re using now for when we have some furnace problems were excellent. The electrician that came out yesterday was great. The coverages are complete. There’s no hidden add-on fees and they honor deductibles. The people show up on time. HMS makes the claim filing very simple and it’s just an overall a very good experience. I’m very pleased that their coverage is true and I couldn’t be happier.

We've had two claims with HMS Home Warranty and submitting the claim is easy because you can call or do it online. However, in our first claim we had trouble getting a service. It was a big runaround and it took us six weeks to get air conditioning in (in the middle of July). The first people they sent were fine but they didn't agree with what their findings were. So they hired a second group and they were horrible. The lady who answered the phone was rude and never had time to answer any of my questions. If I need to know where the part was, she would tell me that I needed to call the HMS Warranty people. She made me do all the work -- hunting and finding.

I was not satisfied with the quality of work that was performed in our first claim too. But in our second claim with HMS for the heat, there was no issue. I called them that day and they had somebody out the next day. The customer service and the people who came and serviced it were great. They had it all taken care of within two or three days. And the quality of work done was fine.

I've had TotalProtect Home Warranty for about nine years. The technicians who have come to service my appliances, as well the quality of work that was performed, have all been good. But I have a suggestion that would be better for TotalProtect and for us too. As it stands, I file a claim, they give me a person, I call that person, and the person comes and does the work. That's the current process. But that's not the best process for them or for me because, for one thing, they aren't getting the best price they could get.

For instance, when my water heater went out, I had to go to their guy. Their guy came and charged an exorbitant amount, way more than he should have, which meant two things: TotalProtect paid more than they had to and I had to pay out-of-pocket because the home warranty doesn't cover the water pan and he charged $75 for a $5 pan. It still only cost me a couple of hundred dollars out-of-pocket, which is better than it would have cost if I didn't have the insurance, but it shouldn't have cost either TotalProtect or me that much.

And so my recommendation is that they should let us pick our own people. Then I can say, "Hey, here's the guy I found. This is how much he's going to charge and this is what he's going to do." And then if they don't approve that, they can always say, "No, we want you to go with this other person." These people are robbing TotalProtect because they know it's a guaranteed contract. So TotalProtect needs to look at the way they're doing it. For them to name only one person with no competition -- when a guy comes to my house and he knows I'm going to pay and they're going to take whatever he says -- that's a recipe for high prices. They need to get three people to look at the job and let them compete for it, not only one person. I could have done my water heater for half the price as I got charged based on the five other plumbers I had talked to.

I’ve had many home warranty companies and TotalProtect stack up with the rest. But I went with them because the upfront money was about $10 less. There are always these little hidden things that come along when the situation occurs that I wasn't aware of, prior to, but it's all in writing. I generally submit a claim online, so it’s very easy. I plug it in, they give me a number. The only thing I don’t like is a lot of times the people who program the system aren’t aware of the geographic differences in this particular area. They see a zip code and go with it. Many times they give me somebody that’s on the other side of the tunnel, which makes traveling back and forth a little bit cumbersome.

The technicians that come over have been very good. The only difficulty has been because of the proximity and the geographic challenges. A lot of times we’re put off a few days, so we have never received what I would call “instantaneous service”. We’ve always had to wait longer than it takes with a couple other companies. It’s a bit of an inconvenience as we had to really hook up a little mechanism when the refrigerator was leaking, which was almost a week. But other than that, they get the job done, and I’m satisfied with the service.

I’ve had TotalProtect for years, but I’m in the process of finding somebody to replace it because they jerked me around for two months. My other claims with them were okay, but the most recent one was very unsatisfactory. On a Friday afternoon back in August, my tenant said, “Your air conditioner’s out.” So I scrambled around trying to find somebody and TotalProtect said they had a thing and they didn’t have to come for two days, which was not unsatisfactory to put it mildly. But our tenant said “Well, you’re going to do something or I’m going to a hotel and send you the bill.” So another firm was called and they came out. I said, “I have a warranty on the house up here in Canton, Georgia. I’ve done this before. It won’t be a problem.” $700 later, they did a couple of things like replace a circuit so the fan would run again and they also put a Freon in the unit. They said, “This needs to be fixed. We’re going to give you an estimate to fix the rest.”

When Tuesday came, a person from TotalProtect came out, saw what was done and did the repair. As far as I know the firm did repair and settled it up with TotalProtect. I sent TotalProtect some things, told them what transpired and gave them the bill. I said, “I don’t want you to pay the bill. But I do want you to reimburse me for whatever you would have paid someone to come out and do what these people did. I’ve done this before.” But TotalProtect put me through a hoop or two. Dealing with them was like dealing with Internal Revenue. It was back and forth - they needed more descriptions, they need this and that, I had to get that, I had to do that, I had to send it all. And finally they tell me, “By the way, that’s not covered at all.” I said, “That’s nice. Could have told me that two months ago before you jerked me around getting data and all that.” So overall, I was very dissatisfied with my experience with TotalProtect.

If you only had it one time that would be one thing but if you have a dishwasher go out one day and the next month the microwave goes out, and then the microwave goes out again the next month, you continue to pay the $100 deductible. If it's a one-time deductible that would be different, but it's a hundred bucks every time whether they do anything or not. That's the only thing that I don't like about it.

And then the poor man had to wait six weeks to get paid. I had to call every other week to stay on top of the paperwork. I had to fax the invoice, which he had already submitted. I had to follow up as to making sure it got through each channel to get to Accounts Payable. I made several calls but no one was aware of the case. Our washing machine broke about two weeks ago, and the original appointment that was set with a contractor didn't happen, because he didn't show. I had to call and leave a message with the contractor for a time on the date given for service (I did this two days prior), and no one ever called back or showed up! Now, I have been dealing with the "customer service dept" at HMS for the past three days, and have someone here to fix the washing machine, and he is telling me I may have to pay more than my deductible? WHAT? Also, a manager was suppose to call me back three days ago. Called yesterday when I was driving and I stated that would need to call them right back, and did so, and they were "out of the office."

I then called back and stated my situation and I was told that the same manager would be calling me right back and that was about 20 hours ago... nothing. NO one cares -- though their generic empathy is repeated over and over when expressing frustration with the two week process of simply getting someone to my home (and carting laundry for four in and out of house in the winter--in MN), not to mention the hours upon hours I have spent on the phone with these people... and now I may be expected to pay more than my deductible? I am done with this place. DO NOT PURCHASE this warranty. It is more stress than peace of mind, unfortunately, and it is turning out to be really expensive -- which is the whole reason we purchased it. We don't have that kind of money to toss around. I have never been more disappointed by a company. Run while you can people.

When my furnace broke, they took almost 2 weeks to get it resolved. We were fortunate that we had space heaters that we used to heat the house. These people do not have any kind of sense of urgency. They stick to their process, which is: You submit a claim (claim # is generated and assigned to a local vendor). You have to call the vendor and schedule when they can come over to give an estimate. Vendor comes, makes an estimate and sends to HMS. HMS then reviews the estimate (approves/disapproves then orders the item that needs fixing). Vendor gets the item and installs it.

    Warning:

    1) When HMS assigns a vendor to you to make the estimate and install / fix your issue, research the vendor. See if they are a good company. If not, request for a new vendor that you are comfortable with. Remember HMS do not know these vendors. They might be fly by night operations and they would not know.
    2) Make sure that when HMS calls you, you determine what they have approved to fix your issue (i.e., replace your refrigerator or fix it). Get the details like what model number did they order, what kind of capacity and if it is similar to what you currently have.
    3) Watch the installation like a hawk. Do not leave your family or the vendor alone. If you see something you are not comfortable with, stop the vendor and kick them out. Call the cops if you have to. You will never know; these people might be ex-cons. They will never look like the service folks in the commercial on TV.

    4) Find out who to call and what to do if something goes wrong with the unit or installation.

That is it. If you survive then you are good. Unfortunately, HMS do not and will not care if it is an emergency or not. Don't even bother as you will just get frustrated. Remember their process above will take at least 2-3 days. If you can't deal with what I have stated above, get another warranty company. There are a lot of better ones out there. Remember realtors are only after your money as well. So don't trust them. You are buying the house. You make the decision. Bring your kids to ride in their brand new leased Lexus or Mercedes-Benz. Pass by McDonald's and have the realtor pay. Eat inside the realtors new car. Remember they are getting thousands of dollars in commission enough to pay for the car in cash.

I'm a first time homeowner, and my water heater leaked from the bottom and drained out overnight. HMS Home Warranty was minimally supportive, with no sense of urgency. The water continued to drain into my basement for 3 days before HMS was able to get a service representative to look at it. I couldn't shut off the water to it without shutting off water to my house, and it's below 30 degrees outside so that wasn't an option. HMS was aware of that detail from day 1. When we finally received the quote it was evident HMS coverage was inadequate, covering barely over half of the legally (their word) required repairs. HMS provided no option to shop and compare service providers, an unrealistic limitation of their coverage. HMS also withheld information throughout the process, which caused me difficulties making an informed decision, and benefited the service provider's ability to charge inflated prices.

The representatives only answered specific questions in a limited fashion with unclear timelines and when pressed for realistic explanations quickly referred back the contract, and thus my lack of choice in addressing the issues. While their scripted faux compassion was initially pleasant, the lack of empathy was uniquely unsettling. The bureaucratic barriers to customer solutions were evident in assisting HMS' customer service representatives abilities to limit my options. Both service providers HMS referred us to were equally unaccommodating. We ended up going with their "claims credit" option and hired our own service provider to address the issue in a timely and cost efficient manner. We would have been better off going that route initially. I gave HMS adequate opportunities throughout the process to remedy their faults, but they smugly did not negotiate on anything, nor even attempt to win back my loyalty.

When we purchased the home we live in currently, HMS came along as warranty at that time. We really liked it so we've stayed with it since '99. All our interactions with their claims reps have been professional, very helpful and always on point. I never have any problems as far as getting my claim in and following up. I've also never had an issue with any of the service reps that come through. I've recommended them to my friends that are thinking about buying a house. It's one thing I always tell them.

It was easy submitting the claim with HMS and they were very friendly. They gave me a phone number of a gentleman to call. He came out and I was concerned about the fact that he had to come out, then notify HMS what the problem was and then get an okay and come back again. I told him that it seems crazy with the back and forth but he said “No, if I can fix it now, I will.” He was very friendly and able to fix it. It’s working great now. So I've been very happy. HMS explained to me that it's a $100 deductible so I would pay up to $100 and I think the gentleman’s bill was less than that, $91 and change.

    Reviewed Dec. 25, 2015

I've had TotalProtect for two years. I'm a first time home buyer and I've been here for four years as of August. Initially, the company I had before didn't know a lot. They covered certain things of my home, but it was different. So when my friend had TotalProtect and she had told me about them, I waited. I was excited about what they were offering, but it was never explained that there's only a certain time of year when there would be heating and cooling Services.

TotalProtect's service had been good until April of this year. Last year, it was horrendous. We had ice, and my front step tore up because of it. And then we found out that the steps weren't properly done when we moved in. I have a gate in the back, and because we couldn't park back there, the ice cracked the gate. So in April when I had the HVAC and heating done, I didn't know that when you call for that piece, they also check for the air conditioning unit. I talked with a young lady from TotalProtect recently and she said, "Oh no, you can't get that done. You had that done in April." I said, "That was in April. This is December, why can't I have it now?" And that's when she mentioned the electrical piece.

The professional who came in recently was very “mannerable.” He explained everything to me, everything that he did. In all my experiences, everyone had always done that and shown me different things. Back in April, they put up a different type of electrical fixture in my kitchen and I was wondering why the bulb would always burst. So when I bought that, the current technician sent by TotalProtect was looking at it and he said, "Do you ever see that flashing?" I said, "Yes, I thought that's something else." And he showed me what went loose. I was happy about that. But like I said, I didn't understand why if I got it done within 365 days, I couldn't get it done again.

As for the other piece that came with my refrigerator, we got a person after about three or four calls. Each time I called, some of them didn't do it this day while some of them didn't do it that day. So after all of that, TotalProtect did find someone that does that. It took forever for the part to come back. We finally got that piece taken care of, but it was a bit disappointing because I had told individuals on my job what it was. I say if they get a home warranty, they find how certain things will be covered and they wouldn't have to wait for people to come in.

The servicemen sent by TotalProtect don't have a clue on how to remove snow or ice. I'm always asking people with new homes about how they take care of their appliances or if they have a home warranty. With how things happened, I don't control how I'm paid. Like this year, it's good. Instead of getting paid on Christmas day, we're getting paid the 24th, which is tomorrow. I'm able to call the 1-800 number, and they are very helpful. I said, "My payment is due so you take it out now"; they do that.

I've gotten the washer, dryer, and refrigerator done twice, but it was just the refrigerator recently. As for the microwave, I'm grateful that TotalProtect had to get somebody for that. It was crazy but that was a very good blessing. They got somebody to come in during the pouring rain. I had to get somebody to take it out because I was told I was supposed to get rid of it. But if I'm paying them on time and my money has never been insufficient, they can't just say, "Oh, because you did that in April and today is December, you can't get that done again."

TotalProtect did send me the paperwork, and sometimes somebody will be nice enough to explain it to me. But it can be a bit disheartening because I don't know what's gonna go on. I've talked with the person that recommended TotalProtect to me. TotalProtect was on top of things for that person and everything worked out, but some stuff happened and at this point, I think they weren't able to continue. So I'll get with her later and see if she got somebody else because I'm just trying to maintain what I have. I'm grateful for what I have and I understand what they don't cover.

I usually like conversation but when it comes to my house and the problem I had, it was nice to just press buttons and they could go away. It was very convenient. My wife was the one at home when the technician came. She said he was absolutely wonderful, very kind, and answered every question she had. He was very respectful and professional as well. The process for claims is excellent because once I called in and tell them what's my problem, they give me the nearest technician after getting my claim number. Reps are able to answer all of my questions, plus they also tell me if the technician or company isn't calling back. When that happens, they will put me on hold and try to call them again. HMS was a recommendation from my realtor. I bought the one-year policy that covered everything from within. My first claim was when the air conditioning went out this past November and the second one was when one of my toilets was clogging up. The repairman came out and he was able to plunge the toilet free but it clogged up again within a few days. He came out again and found that there was a problem in the drainage under the concrete floor. He says it was not covered so I was really disappointed with that. My realtor didn't tell me I have implications.

The third time I had a claim was when my furnace went out about three weeks ago. The furnace was 16 years old and the furnace man recommended the whole furnace replacement. So he talked to HMS and there was no way they were going to buy a new furnace. They’ll just pay for the parts to replace it which were actually out at this moment, so it might go on next week. I was also a little disappointed with that. My realtor said if a water heater, furnace or air conditioning goes out, I can't replace it. I don't think he understood either because I haven’t had anything replaced, I’ve just had patchwork done. I’m happy to have the coverage but I’m disappointed with the little amount that they cover. That’s what I was not expecting.

I found TotalProtect Home Warranty through Regions Bank. They sent it to us as something that they could add on to our mortgage and so we did it that way. Most of the time that we submitted a claim to TotalProtect, it has been good. However, the last couple of times have been a little iffy but it wasn't really the filing of the claim but the service that we got. The last time we filed a claim regarding our old washing machine, the people that TotalProtect used to take care of it never responded back to us. It went on for two weeks.

My husband is on home hemodialysis so I have to wash towels and things constantly. There was no washateria around here so I was hauling things everywhere and I kept trying to call the contractor and TotalProtect. In the end, we had to go buy a new washing machine - we couldn't wait. So that one was not a very good experience. I talked to the head of TotalProtect before it was resolved.

About a month ago, our dishwasher went out. I didn't realize that it was again the same people (who were supposed to fix old washing machine) that were used by TotalProtect. It took them three trips to fix our dishwasher. We were without a dishwasher for almost three weeks. But overall, the issues that we had had nothing to do with TotalProtect but more the service people that they made an appointment with. TotalProtect has been fine.

Only the mechanical and electrical components of your appliances are covered under this WARRANTY (they explained to me in depth that this is NOT an insurance policy). This is only a warranty with a VERY SIGNIFICANT EXCLUSION. Any part of your appliance that is considered STRUCTURAL by them, such as the inside of your refrigerator, dishwasher or washing machine, seals, drums, etc. are excluded from coverage. When the rack adjuster of my KitchenAid 3 year old dishwasher failed (KitchenAid offered me the part for free) but TotalProtect Gold would not cover the labor cost as they consider this a "structural component" even though the dishwasher will not clean without it (which to me and most people, would be considered to be a mechanical component). Be ware that most of your appliance is "structural" and not covered! With this significant exclusion -- the warranty is basically worthless.

It was simple and wonderful to submit a claim to TotalProtect - doing it online made it easy. The technicians who came out have been very good and quite knowledgeable about the equipment that they were trying to repair for me. My only complaint is with the last time I called about the dryer repair. The technician ordered the motor and he got it within a very few days. However, when he came to install it, the fan which was attached to the previous motor had fused with the motor, and so a new fan also needed to be ordered. He had not planned on that, although he did say this was a frequent problem.

It was yet another week before he was able to put it all together so I was without my equipment for two weeks. As he left, he said, "Oh, by the way, when you open the door, the dryer will not turn off. That's the way I had to wire it this time." I thought it would be nice if it were rewired properly. But he did it late on a Friday night and did the best he could. And so, there's a plus and a minus -- I was grateful to have a functioning dryer but I wish it was functioning completely, properly.

Everybody has always been helpful. I have no issue with somebody getting back to me. I've had three claims since I've been at my home since May and all has been great. I have no complaints as far as submitting the claim but I had an issue with the technicians who serviced my appliance. First, I had an air-conditioning problem. It was the hottest weeks of the summer this year. The technician who came out was the problem. It took them two to three weeks before they ever got it fixed. I can deal with that but they were not professional. I was very unsatisfied with the technician. When I call and he answered the phone, he was rough, not very accommodating, and unhelpful.

It's just a small condo that I have, and it wasn't a big deal but he and his companion didn't ask when they used the bathroom. He just sit off. They also used my curtains with their hands. They're white curtains and there was grease on the top of my curtains where one could see it. There were big marks on my wall where they had to take the wood off and they had to take the cable that was at the top of it. I don't know anything about that stuff but they had to take the cable off. They just swept it off. They didn't even try and put it back. He probably could have put the cable back in a couple of seconds with a couple cable nails. I was not happy with them at all. I even filled the survey out telling that I was not happy with them.

So then when I had a second issue come up with my furnace, I called, and when I spoke to somebody from HMS Warranty (when I talk to anybody, they're so helpful and so nice - it's never an issue) I explained the situation to them and said, "If that's the only person I have to use, I might not want to even go through them because I was so unhappy with him." I didn't like his mannerism. He should have a little more compassion to be more professional. I don't mean to complain because I'm not a complainer but the rep was very nice and helpful and gave me a different person. Another contractor came out and they were great.

Then the third claim was for my hot water heater. A couple of months and I have three things to get around but the contractor came out. There were two different people who came out for the water heater and both were excellent, very nice, and professional. The time that they gave me to come out was very reasonable. They tried to help me out with my hours at work.
