This is our second champion generator and do recommend when friends looking to purchase generator. Anybody can start as nothing tricky to do starts if not in first pull then second for sure. Generator is surprisingly quiet.

3800 running watts on gas, and 3200 W on LPG, and me and my wife can lift it into the bed of the pickup too. Plenty of power for essentials in a house and while used camping or on a job site. Had it together in 1/2 hour. Metric hardware of course so have basic metric wrenches. What is cool is they include oil, LPG hose, Oil spout, and wheels and handle. Other generator manufacturers make you buy a kit! So you plug and play with Champion! The hour, volts and Hz gauge is a bonus too for a generator even more expensive. Very happy so far.

I needed to be able to lift the generator in and out of my RV and not have gas in closed area. This generator runs perfectly on propane. I will be able to keep my battery in my RV charged and use my CPAP machine while dry camping.

Very reliable performer, although not the quietest generator in the RV park. I also have used this to power half my home in an extended power outage and quite satisfied with it. Once in a while I need to use starter fluid to get it going after sitting a long while - it pays to start them up regularly.

I am very satisfied with this generator. The price range was in the low end for the quality and wattage output. Starts on the first or second pull every time. I do not have a lot of hours on it but so far I am happy.

The Champion 1700 was very easy to operate. I am a female in the struggle most of the time with equipment and it was very simple to work. My teenagers can even work this with no trouble. I recommend this product for anybody of any age.

I tried it when I got home to make sure it that it would run my furnace and it performed great. I feel better knowing that we will not freeze anymore during power outages in the winter. When looking for a gen set this one had good ratings and price.

I once wrote a review for Champion generator. I was fooled to believe that the item was good and if it wasn't, the limited love time warranty would cover it, no! My generator started leaking oil into the pistons. I called, they told me to try and adjust the values. I did, no help. So I called back, this time, all they were concerned about was how my hours were on the generator, I told them less than 200 hours. No help, they asked me to take it to a repair shop, but there are none near me for at least 100 miles in every direction. So no help, they won't replace it or the motor. By the way, it's only 6 months old. Very poor customer service, they don't keep their word on the warranty end. My advice, don't buy a champion generator. Cummings-Onnan have teamed up to make a portable generator, try them instead.

Bought a 3500 Watt Open Frame Dual Fuel Inverter. Filled fluids, oil & gas. Gas leaked all over driveway. Switched to propane. Pull cord would not budge. After nearly breaking the pull cord, grinding sound in engine. Finally got good pulls but no propane flowing. Tested propane regulator output. Regulator not allowing propane flow. Driveway is asphalt and permanently stained by lost gas. Got local warranty service team in Houston phone number. Called and got cell phone. Left message. Received return call later saying he only serviced large standby generators and gave me a number to another guy. Called a cell phone, no answer, left message. Received call later that he only sold portable generators and said another guy would call. Never called.

Called the 24 hour hotline from the documentation that came with the inverter. On hold for forever. Called online distributor and set up a return. Now I am needing to find a way to get several gallons of gas out of tank safely and efficiently. Found out that multiple products from Champion are discontinuing including this one. Also discovered they had government listed recalls for carburetor bowl leaking gas. No customer service, no quality control, no nothing. Do not buy Champion power products!!!! I am going to Harbor Freight to pick up an inverter.

Champion Power Equipment author review by ConsumerAffairs Research Team

Since its beginning in 2003, Champion Power Equipment has expanded from its California base and opened locations in Tennessee, Wisconsin and Toronto. It has also expanded its product line to include portable, inverter and home standby generators for work, home and recreational use. Champion’s generators can operate using gas, propane or dual-fuel and include either a pull or electric start or wireless remote start.

      • Home standby generators: Champion offers two models of home standby generators, giving your home a permanent backup power source. They connect to your Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) or natural gas system so you never need to refuel it. You can choose from an 8.5- or 12.5-kilowatt model. Transfer switches are sold separately.

      • Inverter generators: Champion has 18 models of inverter generators, including gas, propane or dual fuel options, as well as pull-, electric- or wireless remote-start options. Their output range of 1,000-4,000 watts, coupled with their lightweight portability, makes Champion’s line of inverter generators optimal for RV and tent camping, hunting and fishing needs and events.

      • Industrial generators: Champion’s industrial generators are designed to be portable and durable to make working on remote job sites like farms and construction easier. It has over 60 models of industrial generators ranging in output from 1,000-12,000 watts. They can be fueled by gas, propane or dual-fuel and have a pull-, electric- or wireless remote-start.

      • Dealer locator: Champion does not sell all of its products directly to the public. They offer an online dealer locator to help you locate power equipment and home standby generators.

      • Installation costs: Champion offers installation for their two models of home standby generators. A Champion dealer will give you an exact quote based on your needs, however, installation costs are additional and generally run around $2,000-$3,000 for a home standby unit.
